Stay tuned to meet a man that's standing up 00:00:00.96\00:00:03.26 for the disenfranchised and working through the System 00:00:03.30\00:00:06.40 to make a difference... 00:00:06.43\00:00:07.60 My name is Yvonne Lewis and you're watching Urban Report 00:00:07.64\00:00:11.07 Hello and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:32.29\00:00:34.96 My guest today is Robert D. Johnson 00:00:35.00\00:00:37.60 Architect of the Georgia Fatherhood Initiative 00:00:37.63\00:00:40.34 and National Campaign Director of the Fathers in Education 00:00:40.37\00:00:44.21 Campaign... Welcome to Urban Report Robert. 00:00:44.24\00:00:47.54 Yes, thank you so much You're welcome... 00:00:47.58\00:00:51.15 it's great to have you here... Yes, Ma'am... 00:00:51.18\00:00:54.35 You have been doing some incredible work 00:00:54.38\00:00:57.52 with the folks that are just really struggling 00:00:57.55\00:01:02.79 in terms of their relationships with their children 00:01:02.82\00:01:05.16 and all that... I want to get into that... 00:01:05.19\00:01:07.86 but first, tell us a bit, if you would 00:01:07.93\00:01:10.87 about the impact of fatherlessness 00:01:10.90\00:01:13.84 on our culture and our communities. 00:01:13.87\00:01:16.77 Well, I think one way to start 00:01:16.81\00:01:21.34 with just by sharing the statistics, 00:01:21.38\00:01:25.35 today, we have approximately 00:01:25.38\00:01:29.78 24 million children who would grow up 00:01:29.82\00:01:32.99 without a father in the household... 00:01:33.02\00:01:36.16 that's 24 million babies... 00:01:36.19\00:01:40.56 young children in Elementary School... 00:01:40.60\00:01:43.97 children trying to make it through High School... 00:01:44.00\00:01:47.04 and children trying to navigate their life chances... 00:01:47.07\00:01:50.01 who will not have a father in the home... to guide them... 00:01:50.04\00:01:55.28 this is a tremendous concern for all of us... 00:01:55.31\00:01:59.58 Absolutely... absolutely... on Dare to Dream 00:01:59.61\00:02:03.79 we've had several programs about fatherlessness... 00:02:03.82\00:02:08.59 and it's impact on our communities... 00:02:08.62\00:02:11.23 and it was said in one article that I read that 00:02:11.26\00:02:16.67 that is probably the single-most defining factor 00:02:16.70\00:02:22.07 in various sociological issues that we have 00:02:22.10\00:02:25.97 whether it's High School drop-outs... 00:02:26.01\00:02:28.88 whether it's crime... poverty... 00:02:28.91\00:02:32.11 so all of these things are impacted 00:02:32.15\00:02:35.32 by the lack of the fathers in the home... 00:02:35.35\00:02:38.65 why do you think, 00:02:38.69\00:02:39.99 there is this issue in the first place... 00:02:40.02\00:02:42.59 what's going on? 00:02:42.62\00:02:43.99 Well, Yvonne, I think that we had a change in our culture, 00:02:44.03\00:02:50.47 of our Community... I'm old enough to remember... 00:02:50.50\00:02:54.00 I grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn 00:02:54.04\00:02:56.57 390 Seton Avenue, a 14 story apartment building... 00:02:56.60\00:03:00.34 400 people lived in the building and I never saw 00:03:00.38\00:03:04.08 an apartment getting broken into... 00:03:04.11\00:03:06.01 or a woman get robbed... and we had a culture 00:03:06.05\00:03:12.59 where we had roles and functions 00:03:12.62\00:03:14.86 and the father's job was to go to work, 00:03:14.89\00:03:17.76 the mothers took care of the children 00:03:17.79\00:03:19.83 and our job was to go to School... 00:03:19.86\00:03:21.83 Today... and you rarely saw 00:03:21.86\00:03:25.33 a young lady have a baby you know, 00:03:25.37\00:03:28.57 without being married... but if you did... 00:03:28.60\00:03:30.84 the guy she had the baby from 00:03:30.87\00:03:32.44 the next week... you would see him going to work 00:03:32.47\00:03:36.21 because that was somebody's father's doing... 00:03:36.24\00:03:39.05 I just want to stop you right here Robert... because 00:03:39.08\00:03:42.65 wow, what you said is so important 00:03:42.68\00:03:44.65 and it's something that we really don't deal with 00:03:44.69\00:03:48.56 as much as we should and that is... 00:03:48.59\00:03:50.63 roles... just plain roles... that is such a critical piece 00:03:50.66\00:03:55.80 you said, the fathers went out to work... 00:03:55.83\00:03:58.57 the mothers were taking care of the children... 00:03:58.60\00:04:01.24 and you didn't see the kind of crime... 00:04:01.27\00:04:04.21 you saw fathers providing for their children... 00:04:04.24\00:04:08.04 when we were coming up... so, now you're saying 00:04:08.08\00:04:11.85 this is a different deal now-a-days... 00:04:11.88\00:04:14.18 we are seeing a whole different construct... 00:04:14.22\00:04:17.39 elaborate on that some more for us... would you 00:04:17.42\00:04:20.52 Right... it's a different construct 00:04:20.56\00:04:22.86 and I've done some research on it... I traced it back to... 00:04:22.89\00:04:26.13 right after the Vietnam War... what happened is... 00:04:26.16\00:04:30.47 you had intact families in just about every community 00:04:30.50\00:04:34.84 in the Country... because you have to... 00:04:34.87\00:04:36.17 remember Yvonne... you know, 00:04:36.20\00:04:37.47 many families migrated from the South 00:04:37.51\00:04:39.37 they were used to families, they were used to communities, 00:04:39.41\00:04:43.95 their roles and functions, hard work was... 00:04:43.98\00:04:47.48 everybody had to work hard, the kids had to work, 00:04:47.52\00:04:50.59 and then we moved to these urban environments 00:04:50.62\00:04:53.62 and we still had some of that intact 00:04:53.66\00:04:55.76 but at the end of the Vietnam War in 1970 and 1971... 00:04:55.79\00:05:01.23 we were bombarded with the drug culture... 00:05:01.26\00:05:05.37 drugs and we were... our men coming home 00:05:05.40\00:05:09.07 were... they were confronted by these vices 00:05:09.10\00:05:13.48 that created exposure to criminal activity 00:05:13.51\00:05:17.85 and the destruction and deterioration 00:05:17.88\00:05:20.42 of the family... the fathers... when I grew up... 00:05:20.45\00:05:24.25 many of these, Yvonne, were 00:05:24.29\00:05:26.45 "Gentlemen" 00:05:26.49\00:05:27.62 they had just come out of World War II 00:05:27.66\00:05:29.22 so you can see that they had a relationship to discipline 00:05:29.26\00:05:33.19 and so, as you rewind and look back... 00:05:33.23\00:05:37.37 there is a point where you can see the breakdown 00:05:37.40\00:05:40.54 in the family... the statistics bear it out 00:05:40.57\00:05:43.44 regarding childbearing and other things... 00:05:43.47\00:05:46.27 so, and this is interesting... because I never heard 00:05:46.31\00:05:50.15 the connection really between the breakdown 00:05:50.18\00:05:54.52 of the family and the Vietnam War... 00:05:54.55\00:05:57.89 that is a very interesting concept 00:05:57.92\00:06:00.92 because... here we have, you know, 00:06:00.96\00:06:04.19 our guys coming back... from Vietnam 00:06:04.23\00:06:07.40 many of whom were addicted to heroin and struggling with 00:06:07.46\00:06:12.37 drug abuse... but was there a difference 00:06:12.40\00:06:15.17 in the World War II Vets and the Vietnam Vets? 00:06:15.20\00:06:19.91 Yes, I think the difference was, I lived through it... 00:06:19.94\00:06:24.78 so I'm old enough to have the direct experience 00:06:24.81\00:06:28.35 I think the difference was the bombardment 00:06:28.38\00:06:31.75 of drugs in our communities, World War II Veterans 00:06:31.79\00:06:35.69 they did not have the proclivity for drugs 00:06:35.72\00:06:39.69 they, more-or-less responded to alcohol which is 00:06:39.73\00:06:43.26 much less of a factor in our communities... 00:06:43.30\00:06:47.44 than drugs and the drug trade, if you look at the movie 00:06:47.47\00:06:52.07 American Gangster... and you look at the 00:06:52.11\00:06:54.38 proliferation of drugs in every community 00:06:54.41\00:06:56.64 in the United States of America it changed the DNA 00:06:56.68\00:07:00.68 I'm using that word DNA... is the 00:07:00.72\00:07:03.28 chromosome of our community 00:07:03.32\00:07:05.35 and the chromosome of our community 00:07:05.39\00:07:07.72 was safety... it was responsibility... 00:07:07.76\00:07:10.03 it was discipline... and so, therefore, we had 00:07:10.06\00:07:14.00 young men who were now coming back 00:07:14.00\00:07:16.16 and who their first obligation was not to take care of 00:07:16.20\00:07:20.14 their children and their family but to support their habit... 00:07:20.17\00:07:23.00 and we had a Criminal Justice System... 00:07:23.04\00:07:25.77 that restructured to facilitate their criminality... 00:07:25.81\00:07:33.01 so, you know, this is why we speak of the 00:07:33.05\00:07:35.35 Prison Industrialized Complex 00:07:35.38\00:07:37.02 and I think if you look at the increase in crime... 00:07:37.05\00:07:39.92 and the prison population... you can directly relate it 00:07:39.95\00:07:42.82 to drugs... and so, that's very interesting 00:07:42.86\00:07:47.66 relationship... It absolutely is... 00:07:47.73\00:07:51.07 it absolutely is... so now we have a situation 00:07:51.10\00:07:55.54 where we have the young men... 00:07:55.57\00:07:59.31 coming back from Vietnam, addicted and... 00:07:59.34\00:08:02.98 not all of course... I don't want anybody to think 00:08:03.01\00:08:05.51 that we're saying... "All the veterans that came back 00:08:05.55\00:08:08.02 from Vietnam were drug addicted... " 00:08:08.05\00:08:09.58 that's not what we're saying... but this is an element... 00:08:09.62\00:08:12.72 in this whole puzzle... because Robert... what I see 00:08:12.75\00:08:16.12 this as... the whole thing is it's like an onion 00:08:16.16\00:08:19.49 with all these different layers, 00:08:19.53\00:08:21.50 and the things that have happened 00:08:21.53\00:08:23.43 to the Black Community... within the past 20 years or so, 00:08:23.47\00:08:28.17 these things have really just blown my mind 00:08:28.20\00:08:31.71 really... because we can see... 00:08:31.74\00:08:33.48 where "Yes, there's progress in certain ways" 00:08:33.51\00:08:36.58 and then... we can see where there is still 00:08:36.61\00:08:38.51 this whole systemic, you know, institutionalized deal 00:08:38.55\00:08:42.75 that has created certain restrictions and so 00:08:42.78\00:08:48.49 where do we go... what do we do? 00:08:48.52\00:08:51.63 tell us some solutions... Well, I really like your analogy 00:08:51.66\00:08:55.56 of the onion because I tell that story too... 00:08:55.60\00:08:57.77 you know, we live in Georgia so we have the beautiful Vidalia 00:08:57.80\00:09:01.07 Oh... yeah... that's right those sweet onions... 00:09:01.10\00:09:03.64 which is the best onion in the world by-the-way... 00:09:03.67\00:09:06.61 when I say that when you take the layers 00:09:06.64\00:09:08.88 of the onion off and you get down to the core 00:09:08.91\00:09:10.98 and you cut it everyone in the room is crying, 00:09:11.01\00:09:13.05 okay... Okay, come on... come on now... 00:09:13.08\00:09:16.02 the core of our... the core of our experience 00:09:16.05\00:09:19.79 right now... today... which was separated from our 00:09:19.82\00:09:23.46 past because the minute the community when I grew up 00:09:23.49\00:09:27.96 would not let the drugs to take over and overwhelm 00:09:28.00\00:09:32.40 they simply were organized 00:09:32.43\00:09:34.90 this was black men... white men... 00:09:34.94\00:09:37.37 but that experience they had... they had that relationship 00:09:37.41\00:09:40.34 to being in the military... and their objective was 00:09:40.38\00:09:43.41 the safety of their children and families... 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.51 the men who returned from the war, 00:09:45.55\00:09:47.22 had their DNA changed... 00:09:47.25\00:09:50.95 you know... they had a mutated chromosome... 00:09:50.99\00:09:53.59 you know what I mean... I'm using these 00:09:53.62\00:09:56.89 medical terms... and it changed the nature 00:09:56.93\00:10:00.10 of their behavior and changing the nature 00:10:00.13\00:10:02.76 of their behavior... changed the chemistry 00:10:02.80\00:10:05.50 in our community... 00:10:05.53\00:10:06.84 today, I think, Yvonne, the approach that I take 00:10:06.87\00:10:10.34 to the solution is that we really are going to 00:10:10.37\00:10:13.88 have to rewind to the core of that onion 00:10:13.91\00:10:16.18 and then stand there in that room and cry like a baby 00:10:16.21\00:10:18.78 and realize that we do have a history... 00:10:18.81\00:10:21.58 we do have a history of community 00:10:21.62\00:10:23.89 we do have examples of community and we cannot separate ourselves 00:10:23.92\00:10:30.79 from our history... we cannot separate ourselves 00:10:30.83\00:10:33.29 from the good parts of what we did, 00:10:33.33\00:10:35.33 that nuclear family... 00:10:35.36\00:10:37.50 that child would not have a baby because she knew her daddy 00:10:37.53\00:10:42.07 wasn't going for it... let me just tell you... 00:10:42.10\00:10:45.47 just like that... real straight, I have 3 sisters... 00:10:45.51\00:10:49.24 and when you came to my house to see my sister 00:10:49.28\00:10:51.61 you had better look at my father... in his eye... 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.98 and when you looked at my father in his eye, 00:10:54.02\00:10:57.19 you already knew... there were certain things 00:10:57.22\00:11:00.36 that you just simply were not going to do... 00:11:00.39\00:11:03.76 I know just what you mean... you know what, Robert, 00:11:03.79\00:11:09.00 when you talk about... this is so... 00:11:09.03\00:11:11.17 this is so critical too... when you talk about 00:11:11.20\00:11:13.34 the DNA has changed... you know, when I was growing up 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.70 the whole idea of drug dealers it was repulsive 00:11:15.74\00:11:21.11 you know, somebody was dealing drugs... 00:11:21.14\00:11:23.71 that is repulsive they're messing up the community 00:11:23.75\00:11:26.78 they're tearing down the community 00:11:26.82\00:11:28.38 they are not the heroes of the community... 00:11:28.42\00:11:32.19 when did it flip... and the drug dealers become 00:11:32.22\00:11:35.99 the heroes... "Man, I want to be like... 00:11:36.02\00:11:37.79 that... because he's driving that big car 00:11:37.83\00:11:39.53 and he's got all the women and he's got all the money... " 00:11:39.56\00:11:42.36 it's like... we had a different sense of 00:11:42.40\00:11:46.03 this is what's important... 00:11:46.07\00:11:48.10 it's important to build up the community 00:11:48.14\00:11:50.47 not tear it down... and what I'm seeing is the 00:11:50.51\00:11:54.51 glorification of the drug dealer and it's just... 00:11:54.54\00:11:58.48 to me... it's such a flip in... you know, 00:11:58.51\00:12:01.32 the Bible says that at some point... 00:12:01.35\00:12:04.19 things that are right will seem wrong 00:12:04.22\00:12:06.02 things that are wrong will seem right... 00:12:06.05\00:12:08.12 and that's what's happening... it's... 00:12:08.16\00:12:10.19 there's a flip in Society, 00:12:10.23\00:12:12.26 and you're saying that we need to key into 00:12:12.29\00:12:15.36 our history... we didn't always have 00:12:15.40\00:12:18.20 this kind of glorification of the drug dealer... 00:12:18.23\00:12:21.94 we need to go back to... the place 00:12:21.97\00:12:24.34 where we had roles where the daddy was looking 00:12:24.37\00:12:26.71 into the eyes of those suitors and saying, 00:12:26.74\00:12:29.01 "You're not going to try that with my daughter... " 00:12:29.04\00:12:32.15 those kinds of things... we need to go back to... 00:12:32.18\00:12:35.32 so I think... your points are so well taken... 00:12:35.35\00:12:38.25 what connection does literacy have 00:12:38.29\00:12:42.99 with where we are... 00:12:43.02\00:12:44.46 Well, Yvonne, I tell you... I sure do appreciate these 00:12:44.49\00:12:48.93 questions you're asking me because I did a little research 00:12:48.96\00:12:53.44 and I had a choice of looking at where the evolution 00:12:53.47\00:12:57.17 incubator for what I consider to be the magnitude 00:12:57.21\00:13:00.84 of the problems that we are addressing and faced with today, 00:13:00.88\00:13:04.15 and I had a choice between literacy and poverty... 00:13:04.18\00:13:07.75 and I chose literacy... because, today... 00:13:07.78\00:13:12.72 and then I always used statistics... 00:13:12.75\00:13:15.16 I always do research... I'm a research-type person 00:13:15.19\00:13:18.69 but I try to speak in terms where people can relate 00:13:18.73\00:13:22.13 but the research is very compelling... 00:13:22.16\00:13:25.10 you have 44 million people in America 00:13:25.13\00:13:28.04 that are functionally illiterate 00:13:28.07\00:13:30.54 now, Yvonne, there's a difference between illiterate 00:13:30.57\00:13:33.31 and functionally illiterate... 00:13:33.34\00:13:34.81 functionally illiterate means 00:13:34.84\00:13:36.31 that you don't have the capacity 00:13:36.34\00:13:37.75 for you to hold a job, and apply the reading 00:13:37.78\00:13:40.65 and writing skills that you need 00:13:40.68\00:13:42.35 in order to maintain that job... 00:13:42.38\00:13:44.02 you don't have the ability to go to the supermarket 00:13:44.05\00:13:47.62 and tell the difference between a sale item and not a sale item, 00:13:47.66\00:13:50.99 you do not have the ability for you to write a check 00:13:51.03\00:13:53.83 and keep a check book... okay... so that's 00:13:53.86\00:13:56.36 functionally illiterate... so you have 44 million people 00:13:56.40\00:13:59.03 but Yvonne, I wanted to make this point 00:13:59.07\00:14:00.40 this last point... you have 44 million people 00:14:00.44\00:14:03.47 that's in poverty... so how is that... 00:14:03.51\00:14:05.97 isn't that interesting that you have this side by side, 00:14:06.01\00:14:08.48 so here it is... here's the bottom line, 00:14:08.51\00:14:11.35 people that are functionally illiterate will live in poverty. 00:14:11.38\00:14:16.32 Come on... come on now... is that not the bottom line... 00:14:16.35\00:14:19.99 that literacy and poverty go together... 00:14:20.02\00:14:24.83 That's exactly right... they go together... 00:14:24.86\00:14:27.93 and they feed off of each other, and then they become 00:14:27.96\00:14:30.77 a multiplier... and the multiplier is not 00:14:30.80\00:14:33.40 two times two is exponential is 2 to the power of 3... 00:14:33.44\00:14:37.67 for people that are Math majors out there... 00:14:37.71\00:14:39.81 I wasn't but... I wasn't either so... 00:14:39.84\00:14:42.24 but you know... exponential means that it's 00:14:42.28\00:14:45.85 multiplying 5 times as fast... so when you have poverty, 00:14:45.88\00:14:49.78 you have illiteracy... it grows into poverty... 00:14:49.82\00:14:54.12 it grows into education... 00:14:54.16\00:14:56.26 or the lack of education attainment 00:14:56.29\00:14:58.13 because that's passed on... 00:14:58.16\00:14:59.59 okay... because, if I'm a father and a mother 00:14:59.63\00:15:02.33 and I only have a 6th Grade reading... 00:15:02.36\00:15:05.07 how do I expect my child to advance their reading... 00:15:05.10\00:15:10.21 now... in the past culture... 00:15:10.24\00:15:12.14 we did do that because we had much more control 00:15:12.17\00:15:15.78 of our community and that father that worked on that farm, 00:15:15.81\00:15:19.18 he knew he wanted his child 00:15:19.21\00:15:20.68 to get a a high school education 00:15:20.72\00:15:22.15 and so, today, though, we allow our children 00:15:22.18\00:15:25.72 to pretty much function on their own... 00:15:25.75\00:15:27.42 and without guidance... they happen to meet those 00:15:27.46\00:15:32.43 speed bumps... like 3rd Grade reading, you know 00:15:32.46\00:15:34.60 where we have 60 percent of our children 00:15:34.63\00:15:36.43 failing the 3rd Grade Reading proficiency... 00:15:36.46\00:15:38.43 these children that are just starting out in life... 00:15:38.47\00:15:41.14 and they've already done the longitudinal study to show 00:15:41.17\00:15:43.81 how they're likely to drop out of high school... 00:15:43.84\00:15:46.27 so, we've got the 44 million 00:15:46.31\00:15:49.94 people... in this Country that are functionally illiterate 00:15:49.98\00:15:53.25 and then we have millions of children... 00:15:53.28\00:15:56.38 who then... because... their parents are 00:15:56.42\00:15:59.09 functionally illiterate or illiterate... 00:15:59.12\00:16:01.76 they're not doing well in School... 00:16:01.79\00:16:04.49 either... whether it's... whether the parents 00:16:04.53\00:16:07.13 are illiterate or the parents aren't just parenting... 00:16:07.13\00:16:09.96 which is another issue... 00:16:10.00\00:16:11.57 which... you know... 00:16:11.60\00:16:13.00 they're setting their kids in front of the TV 00:16:13.03\00:16:14.54 and thinking that the TV is going to be the teacher 00:16:14.57\00:16:18.14 and train the kids... so, again, we've got that 00:16:18.17\00:16:21.61 "onion" Robert... we've got that onion of multiple 00:16:21.64\00:16:25.01 issues... we've got... people, who themselves, are 00:16:25.05\00:16:28.55 illiterate... who don't know how to help their children 00:16:28.58\00:16:32.79 so, suppose someone is watching this Program today 00:16:32.82\00:16:36.36 and they're saying... "Okay, I don't really 00:16:36.39\00:16:39.26 know... how to read... 00:16:39.29\00:16:41.56 I don't really know how to balance my check book 00:16:41.60\00:16:44.20 I don't really know... how to do any of these things 00:16:44.23\00:16:46.80 what do I do... and how can I help my children 00:16:46.84\00:16:51.04 to do better?" Well, actually, that's the most 00:16:51.07\00:16:55.24 important question... is solution... 00:16:55.28\00:16:57.78 and that's where Fathers in Education was created 00:16:57.81\00:17:01.38 after the 20 years of serving fathers 00:17:01.42\00:17:03.95 and 3 decades of serving our families and our community 00:17:03.99\00:17:06.76 in... it's all through the grace of God... 00:17:06.79\00:17:09.52 I realized that we were 00:17:09.56\00:17:11.89 passing on the condition 00:17:11.93\00:17:14.13 to generational... to the next generation... 00:17:14.20\00:17:16.73 when I was responsible for programming 00:17:16.77\00:17:20.57 and I had the opportunity to counsel men... 00:17:20.60\00:17:22.87 I had a man come to me one time, Yvonne, 00:17:22.90\00:17:24.94 and I asked him to fill out an application 00:17:24.97\00:17:26.91 and he cried... he couldn't fill it out... 00:17:26.94\00:17:28.81 and he cried like a baby... but he had been working 00:17:28.84\00:17:31.08 for the Electric Company for 13 years... 00:17:31.11\00:17:33.18 I asked him... how would he work 00:17:33.21\00:17:35.62 for the Electric Company when he couldn't read... he said 00:17:35.65\00:17:37.52 "Mr. J, I did what I had to do" he said, 00:17:37.55\00:17:39.49 "but the thing that hurt me the most 00:17:39.52\00:17:41.46 is I couldn't read my books to my kids... " 00:17:41.49\00:17:44.09 but guess what happened, he admitted he needed help... 00:17:44.13\00:17:48.33 and he came to somebody who was willing to help him... 00:17:48.36\00:17:52.57 I went to the Adult Basic Education people 00:17:52.60\00:17:54.97 and told them, "Don't embarrass him... " 00:17:55.00\00:17:57.44 Hmmm... "When you give him the test, 00:17:57.47\00:17:59.87 don't put him in the room with everybody else... 00:17:59.91\00:18:02.68 put him in a room with people that have 00:18:02.71\00:18:04.68 the same letter... " and do you know... 00:18:04.71\00:18:06.61 3 years later... I saw that gentleman 00:18:06.65\00:18:08.52 in an Adult Basic Education Class 00:18:08.55\00:18:11.22 and he knew how to fill out an application... 00:18:11.25\00:18:13.56 Isn't that wonderful? That's awesome... 00:18:13.59\00:18:15.99 and that's so heartwarming isn't it... 00:18:16.02\00:18:18.36 because that's life-changing... you're not just 00:18:18.39\00:18:21.06 talking about, you know, 00:18:21.10\00:18:22.43 having somebody change their shoes 00:18:22.46\00:18:24.17 you're talking about something 00:18:24.20\00:18:26.33 that gave this man a tool... 00:18:26.37\00:18:28.47 that he can use for everything, reading... as they say in... 00:18:28.50\00:18:32.37 they used to have this Program called "Reading is Fundamental" 00:18:32.41\00:18:35.44 if you can't read... you can't really do anything... 00:18:35.48\00:18:38.85 That's right... you're functionally illiterate 00:18:38.88\00:18:42.48 and then... by default... you're basically passing that 00:18:42.52\00:18:46.15 on to your children... and then... 00:18:46.19\00:18:48.62 but here's the part, Yvonne, that's most devastating... 00:18:48.66\00:18:52.66 people are embarrassed by this, okay... and so these fathers... 00:18:52.69\00:18:56.23 I've had experience with them, you know that whole thing 00:18:56.26\00:18:59.80 I want to be a man... but you're so embarrassed 00:18:59.83\00:19:02.67 that you can't read... you're not going to tell anybody 00:19:02.70\00:19:05.14 so you're going to fake it, so we're going to get 10,000 men 00:19:05.17\00:19:08.74 in 3 years in Fathers in Education 00:19:08.78\00:19:11.81 and we're bringing them in to our structure 00:19:11.85\00:19:15.48 regardless of their marital status 00:19:15.52\00:19:17.99 economic status or educational attainment 00:19:18.02\00:19:21.69 and we say... "We love you... 00:19:21.72\00:19:22.99 okay... and we want you to make a commitment 00:19:23.02\00:19:26.06 to your child's education from early education through 00:19:26.09\00:19:29.73 high school and beyond... " now, 00:19:29.76\00:19:31.37 do you know what it means to somebody 00:19:31.40\00:19:33.44 that doesn't have a job to envision 00:19:33.47\00:19:35.44 being in that child's life for 13 or 14 years... 00:19:35.47\00:19:38.77 it's unprecedented... because they can't even 00:19:38.81\00:19:41.98 see past tomorrow... and so... where they say, 00:19:42.01\00:19:44.81 "Without a vision a man perishes... " 00:19:44.85\00:19:47.15 am I correct? Yes... 00:19:47.18\00:19:48.32 we put their children in front of them... 00:19:48.35\00:19:50.85 and that father loves that child... 00:19:50.89\00:19:54.06 and he wants that child to do better... 00:19:54.09\00:19:56.52 that's when the Spirit comes in... 00:19:56.56\00:19:59.89 see Spirit moves when it sees love... 00:19:59.93\00:20:02.83 and this is how we are operating... 00:20:02.86\00:20:05.70 this is what God has blessed me to do... 00:20:05.73\00:20:08.87 to be my ministry... this is how we're going to 00:20:08.90\00:20:13.04 change the game... Come on... come on... 00:20:13.07\00:20:16.78 How... okay... oh, you've given me so much here... 00:20:16.81\00:20:20.82 this is so good... how are you going to reach 00:20:20.85\00:20:23.89 these men... how are you going to reach them? 00:20:23.92\00:20:26.89 Okay... well I tell you... I wish I could talk to you 00:20:26.92\00:20:30.69 every day... you really are very sharp with this... 00:20:30.73\00:20:34.36 let me tell you Yvonne, I had been blessed that I am a 00:20:34.40\00:20:38.13 very powerful organizer... I'm a member of the 00:20:38.17\00:20:40.94 National Fatherhood Leadership Leaders' Group... 00:20:40.97\00:20:43.74 and I'm the National Mobilization Officer 00:20:43.77\00:20:46.17 my goal is... my job is... 00:20:46.21\00:20:48.34 to mobilize... about 1,500 Fatherhood Programs 00:20:48.38\00:20:51.41 around the Country and bring them in... 00:20:51.45\00:20:52.68 to a Community... what I've done as far as 00:20:52.71\00:20:55.08 Education... is... I am creating a network 00:20:55.12\00:20:59.75 of 200 Fathers In Education partners... 00:20:59.79\00:21:04.36 who live in various venues 00:21:04.39\00:21:07.20 around the United States of America 00:21:07.23\00:21:08.96 who have access to these fathers... 00:21:09.00\00:21:10.67 and I'm asking them to connect with these fathers 00:21:10.70\00:21:14.24 and I'm using technology platform... 00:21:14.27\00:21:16.67 to bring them in to a "virtual community" 00:21:16.71\00:21:20.21 just like Facebook... I'm creating the Directory 00:21:20.24\00:21:23.55 I'm putting 10,000 fathers on the list 00:21:23.58\00:21:25.38 why don't we just say we start with 200... 00:21:25.41\00:21:27.48 and we put them on a page... 00:21:27.52\00:21:29.48 and they don't know each other 00:21:29.52\00:21:31.35 but they all are committed to their children... 00:21:31.39\00:21:33.89 they all are learning from each other... 00:21:33.92\00:21:36.52 and then we build the capacity for those individuals 00:21:36.56\00:21:39.49 to become a Community and for them to organize 00:21:39.53\00:21:42.56 themselves just like the men did when I was growing up 00:21:42.60\00:21:45.27 and they all... the best time of the day... 00:21:45.30\00:21:47.37 Yvonne, was when the men went to work in the morning 00:21:47.40\00:21:49.87 and when daddy came home... 00:21:49.90\00:21:51.47 Oh, you know what Robert... seriously... this is so good... 00:21:51.51\00:21:56.48 this is so good... because so many people 00:21:56.51\00:21:59.05 sit back and say... "What can I do... 00:21:59.08\00:22:01.55 how can I make a difference, what can I do...?" 00:22:01.58\00:22:06.19 and you're giving a solution 00:22:06.22\00:22:09.02 you are saying... "Let's organize... 00:22:09.06\00:22:11.49 let's use Social Media and Technology... 00:22:11.53\00:22:13.90 and let's organize this thing and get it going... " 00:22:13.93\00:22:17.97 you're not just sitting back, saying, 00:22:18.00\00:22:19.93 "Oh, I wish we could do this... " 00:22:19.97\00:22:21.87 no, you're doing it... and I'm just so grateful... 00:22:21.90\00:22:24.91 the Lord is so good... because he puts 00:22:24.94\00:22:28.28 ideas into our spirits 00:22:28.31\00:22:30.48 to do things... 00:22:30.51\00:22:31.78 to make a difference... it's not His will 00:22:31.81\00:22:34.28 that people should just be floundering like this... 00:22:34.32\00:22:37.12 it's not... and so, He's given you 00:22:37.15\00:22:40.02 some great ideas as to how to move forward 00:22:40.06\00:22:43.99 with this... so you're going to be 00:22:44.03\00:22:45.36 getting partners and organizing this whole movement 00:22:45.39\00:22:50.33 to help fathers... is this... 00:22:50.37\00:22:53.10 this is incarcerated as well as non-incarcerated fathers... 00:22:53.13\00:22:58.17 who are the fathers that you want? 00:22:58.21\00:22:59.87 Well, primarily Yvonne, they are low-income fathers 00:22:59.91\00:23:03.41 primarily by default... okay... because the kids 00:23:03.45\00:23:06.92 that are at the greatest risk of impact 00:23:06.95\00:23:09.42 are low-income kids... okay... and so, 00:23:09.45\00:23:11.69 the fathers who have the greatest need 00:23:11.72\00:23:13.92 the greatest barriers are low-income fathers 00:23:13.96\00:23:16.39 so these fathers are... a significant number of them 00:23:16.42\00:23:20.16 have criminal records and have been exposed 00:23:20.20\00:23:22.66 to the Criminal Justice System, so that's the major part 00:23:22.70\00:23:25.87 of our population... so we want to help 00:23:25.90\00:23:28.20 them to revise their behavior and their perception 00:23:28.24\00:23:32.84 of their opportunities 00:23:32.87\00:23:35.14 and develop a vision 00:23:35.18\00:23:37.38 for their future... and just like I read a book 00:23:37.41\00:23:40.38 the other day... it said, "Just like our bodies 00:23:40.42\00:23:43.39 were not made to endure pain... 00:23:43.42\00:23:45.49 we were not built to endure failure... " 00:23:45.52\00:23:49.32 Hmmm... hmmm... you see... 00:23:49.36\00:23:51.49 God didn't make us to be failures... 00:23:51.53\00:23:54.10 Come on... come on... we're supposed to be 00:23:54.13\00:23:56.60 the head... not the tail... right? 00:23:56.63\00:23:57.87 That's right... 00:23:57.90\00:23:59.03 we're supposed to be the head not the tail... 00:23:59.07\00:24:00.37 That's right... 00:24:00.40\00:24:01.70 but one of the things that seems to have happened... 00:24:01.74\00:24:04.84 and you alluded to this earlier 00:24:04.87\00:24:07.11 is that the whole idea of roles 00:24:07.14\00:24:09.68 has gotten convoluted... really... 00:24:09.71\00:24:12.18 I mean... when you look at it... you know... 00:24:12.21\00:24:14.28 when you have a fatherless situation 00:24:14.32\00:24:16.82 then you have the mother that's really 00:24:16.85\00:24:19.29 the Head of household, and then that young boy 00:24:19.32\00:24:22.49 looks to the mother to take care of him 00:24:22.52\00:24:24.89 and then looks to the girlfriend to take care of him 00:24:24.93\00:24:28.46 instead of being the man that God created him to be... 00:24:28.50\00:24:32.07 so, again, that onion... that whole idea of the layers 00:24:32.10\00:24:35.67 and what you're doing with your Organization 00:24:35.70\00:24:38.81 is... you are putting back the whole idea of 00:24:38.84\00:24:41.98 God's initial plan 00:24:42.01\00:24:44.08 for the role of man... 00:24:44.11\00:24:46.08 That's right, Yvonne, and that's... when... 00:24:46.11\00:24:49.58 of all of the things that I talk about 00:24:49.62\00:24:51.75 with all my partners around the Country 00:24:51.79\00:24:53.89 we always end up with Spirit... okay... 00:24:53.92\00:24:56.86 and my favorite verse in the Bible 00:24:56.89\00:24:58.53 is Jeremiah... that said, "I knew you before 00:24:58.56\00:25:00.40 you were formed in your mother's womb... 00:25:00.43\00:25:02.36 so, therefore, I had a purpose for you... " 00:25:02.40\00:25:04.37 but we realize that at some point... 00:25:04.40\00:25:06.30 when these children came out they had exposure 00:25:06.33\00:25:09.27 to an environment that put fear in them... 00:25:09.30\00:25:11.97 F E A R... False Education Appearing Real 00:25:12.01\00:25:14.68 and then they began believing that it was true 00:25:14.71\00:25:18.01 you know... and so, I always tell people 00:25:18.05\00:25:19.65 "If you believe you're sick... you're sick... 00:25:19.68\00:25:22.08 right... in direct proportion to how much you believe it... " 00:25:22.12\00:25:25.09 so when we believe "we are not going to ever have a 00:25:25.12\00:25:27.79 job or we are never going to have a family... " 00:25:27.82\00:25:30.39 but we really... when we don't have 00:25:30.43\00:25:32.49 an environment and a structure that gives us 00:25:32.53\00:25:36.53 the understanding of our role and our function... 00:25:36.56\00:25:39.17 when I was a kid... do you know what my job was? 00:25:39.20\00:25:41.74 "Go to School... " Hmmm... hmmm... 00:25:41.77\00:25:44.24 and "Stay out of trouble... " because when daddy came home 00:25:44.27\00:25:48.44 at 6 o'clock... I had to stop everything I was doing 00:25:48.48\00:25:52.41 and then we all had to go upstairs and eat dinner... 00:25:52.45\00:25:55.98 and Friday was a wonderful day 00:25:56.02\00:25:58.42 because daddy would come home 00:25:58.45\00:26:00.79 he'd been paid that little bit of money and boy... 00:26:00.82\00:26:03.19 we'd just act like we were millionaires... 00:26:03.22\00:26:05.79 so, we didn't know we were poor 00:26:05.83\00:26:08.36 we were "working poor" 00:26:08.40\00:26:09.56 millions and millions of working poor today... 00:26:09.60\00:26:12.03 but if we organize, Yvonne, as a Community... 00:26:12.07\00:26:14.47 and we begin to build the capacity... 00:26:14.50\00:26:17.07 to support each other with the goal of the children... 00:26:17.11\00:26:20.08 I just want to leave you with this... 00:26:20.11\00:26:22.31 in the African village... there is a... 00:26:22.34\00:26:24.48 the way they greet each other in the morning... 00:26:24.51\00:26:26.58 they say, "How are the children?" 00:26:26.61\00:26:29.92 and they say... "the children are fine... " 00:26:29.95\00:26:33.09 so if the children are fine... the village is fine... 00:26:33.12\00:26:36.36 All right... all right... I love it...
