"Chew" 00:00:57.92\00:01:01.92 where did that name come from? how did you get the name "Chew" 00:01:01.96\00:01:05.66 that's your real name isn't it? 00:01:05.69\00:01:07.00 That's my real last name, exactly... 00:01:07.03\00:01:09.13 Wow, did you get teased a lot? 00:01:09.16\00:01:10.87 You know, I got teased more on my first name... 00:01:10.90\00:01:14.07 growing up... and then as I get older, 00:01:14.10\00:01:15.70 I get more teased on my last name... 00:01:15.74\00:01:17.27 Now, your first name is...? 00:01:17.31\00:01:21.21 It's really GW... it's just two letters... 00:01:21.24\00:01:23.95 No... it doesn't stand for anything... it's GW 00:01:23.98\00:01:26.61 That's my real name... exactly... 00:01:26.65\00:01:28.38 GW Chew... GW Chew... and actually 00:01:28.42\00:01:31.19 my father's name was Grandwell Waymond Chew 00:01:31.22\00:01:33.96 and I got the "G" from Grandwell and "W" from Waymand 00:01:33.99\00:01:36.59 and that's how I got the name GW... 00:01:36.62\00:01:38.53 so, that's my real name... 00:01:38.56\00:01:40.40 All right... all right... and so, when did you find 00:01:40.43\00:01:44.23 how did you get the name... give us a little history about that 00:01:44.27\00:01:48.57 Yeah no problem... it's really an interesting story for me 00:01:48.60\00:01:51.17 you know, I'm a chef and so I go by... Chef Chew 00:01:51.21\00:01:54.11 and so... believe it or not... when I was three weeks old 00:01:54.14\00:01:57.21 the Lord allowed me to get adopted into a wonderful family 00:01:57.25\00:02:00.28 and so, I was actually adopted into a family 00:02:00.32\00:02:02.72 that had this last name Chew... and I'm African American family 00:02:02.75\00:02:06.49 and it's just been a blessing... they actually led me to the Lord 00:02:06.52\00:02:10.26 you know, through my family, my uncles and my aunts 00:02:10.29\00:02:12.43 and it's just been a... kind of... 00:02:12.46\00:02:13.93 the name has kind of given me my destiny, 00:02:13.96\00:02:16.06 it's kind of amazing... and being adopted... 00:02:16.10\00:02:18.17 Isn't that interesting how your name... 00:02:18.20\00:02:21.67 your name is tied in with what you do... 00:02:21.70\00:02:25.11 Exactly... exactly... That is tremendous 00:02:25.14\00:02:28.04 and so when did you decide that you wanted to go into... 00:02:28.08\00:02:32.58 being a chef... how did that happen? 00:02:32.61\00:02:34.95 Well, it kind of started... you know... 00:02:34.98\00:02:37.12 I believe that my father... he actually really loved to cook 00:02:37.15\00:02:41.09 he would always do barbecue grills and, you know, 00:02:41.12\00:02:43.76 just do all kinds of this interesting cuisines at home... 00:02:43.79\00:02:47.10 and so... growing up... I just got a lot from my family 00:02:47.13\00:02:50.37 you know, from cooking... my aunts and my uncles 00:02:50.40\00:02:52.00 would always have cookouts... and Thanksgivings would be this 00:02:52.03\00:02:55.94 I mean, everything that you can imagine, 00:02:55.97\00:02:57.61 but when I got to my early 20s I learned about healthy cooking 00:02:57.64\00:03:01.41 learned about eating a vegetarian lifestyle... 00:03:01.44\00:03:04.08 and I just kind of had an intriguing desire... 00:03:04.11\00:03:06.58 to want to use this food as a way to minister to people. 00:03:06.61\00:03:09.85 So, you started in your 20s, you loved watching your dad cook 00:03:09.88\00:03:14.46 and I think... people need to know that men cook... 00:03:14.49\00:03:18.86 there's nothing intrinsically "female" about cooking 00:03:18.89\00:03:23.20 Yeah, yeah, definitely... Right... 00:03:23.23\00:03:25.87 Yeah... So, you watched your dad cook 00:03:25.90\00:03:28.44 and from him, you kind of got a love for the kitchen... 00:03:28.47\00:03:34.18 Is that it? Exactly... I mean, 00:03:34.21\00:03:36.08 from watching him in the kitchen being creative 00:03:36.11\00:03:38.38 I mean, he made stuff that was just creative... 00:03:38.41\00:03:40.38 I mean, the stuff you would never think about... 00:03:40.42\00:03:42.95 when I was a young boy, we had an ice storm... 00:03:42.98\00:03:45.45 believe it or not... and all of our electricity went out 00:03:45.49\00:03:47.99 and so, we had a woodstove growing up... 00:03:48.02\00:03:50.86 and so, my father actually made a Lasagna dish 00:03:50.89\00:03:53.90 on the woodstove... and he was just so excited 00:03:53.93\00:03:56.80 I mean, to see this was creative and using just whatever 00:03:56.83\00:04:00.67 he had... to just kind of make things really tasty 00:04:00.70\00:04:03.24 so it was pretty cool... That is so neat, that is so neat 00:04:03.27\00:04:06.68 so, parents that are watching, I mean, dads, 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.98 take your kids in the kitchen and do some fun things... 00:04:10.01\00:04:13.72 Exactly... Right... 00:04:13.75\00:04:14.82 Exactly... exactly... Do you do that with your kids? 00:04:14.85\00:04:18.29 Well, my son is only 9- months-old right now, so 00:04:18.32\00:04:21.66 and hopefully soon, I will be able to take him 00:04:21.69\00:04:24.96 in the kitchen... but, you know, that's a prayer coming as he 00:04:24.99\00:04:27.76 gets older... definitely... Yes, that would be kind of 00:04:27.76\00:04:30.33 hard to do... right... taking your 9-month-old 00:04:30.37\00:04:33.03 to the kitchen right now, Yeah... 00:04:33.07\00:04:34.84 But... so that would be so, so good 00:04:34.87\00:04:38.41 and just kind of carry on the "Chew Tradition" 00:04:38.44\00:04:40.71 Exactly... give him something to chew on... 00:04:40.74\00:04:42.91 Give him something to chew on... 00:04:42.94\00:04:46.35 well you have been here to Dare to Dream 00:04:46.38\00:04:49.35 and you've been on the Taste of Paradise 00:04:49.38\00:04:52.32 with Nyse Collins and we had a chance to taste 00:04:52.35\00:04:56.12 some of that delicious food, it is so great... 00:04:56.16\00:04:59.86 what made you decide that you wanted to do the 00:04:59.89\00:05:03.67 vegan cooking versus just general cooking? 00:05:03.70\00:05:07.10 Well, you know, as you look in the Scripture 00:05:07.14\00:05:10.54 you look in the book of Genesis and it talks about... 00:05:10.57\00:05:13.61 God gave us a diet of eating pretty much plant foods 00:05:13.64\00:05:16.64 from the very onset... meat wasn't allowed 00:05:16.68\00:05:18.88 until after the flood... and then through much research 00:05:18.91\00:05:22.05 we find that eating a plant-based diet 00:05:22.08\00:05:23.92 is pretty much an optimal diet 00:05:23.95\00:05:26.82 and so, I just kind of figured usually growing up... 00:05:26.86\00:05:29.59 I used to eat vegetarian food but it wasn't always 00:05:29.62\00:05:32.39 the greatest... and I just had a desire to say, 00:05:32.43\00:05:35.10 "Can we make healthy food that actually tastes good... " 00:05:35.13\00:05:38.17 and so that was kind of like a challenge for me... 00:05:38.20\00:05:41.14 to figure out how to make things that we love 00:05:41.17\00:05:44.04 pizzas and wraps and stir fries... 00:05:44.07\00:05:46.11 and even mock chicken and stuff like that 00:05:46.14\00:05:49.31 to make it taste actually good, so people will say, 00:05:49.34\00:05:52.01 "Man, I can't believe this isn't actually chicken... " 00:05:52.05\00:05:54.15 so, I have a little statement that says, 00:05:54.18\00:05:56.52 "Looks like chicken, tastes like chicken, 00:05:56.55\00:05:58.49 but, guess what, it's not chicken... 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.42 crispy on the outside and white in the middle 00:06:00.46\00:06:03.36 oh, it's delicious... " and so, I make it fun, 00:06:03.39\00:06:05.86 that's one of the things... you got to make it fun 00:06:05.89\00:06:08.76 and people will eat something if it looks like it 00:06:08.80\00:06:11.70 and it tastes like it and it's actually good 00:06:11.73\00:06:13.40 but it's healthy... they'll go for it... every single time... 00:06:13.44\00:06:15.50 Absolutely, one of the things that I know to be true 00:06:15.54\00:06:19.37 is that... when you're working with people 00:06:19.41\00:06:21.54 and let's say they've been traditionally 00:06:21.58\00:06:24.18 making really bad choices 00:06:24.21\00:06:26.11 food choices and lifestyle choices and stuff, 00:06:26.15\00:06:29.42 you can't take away... their favorite foods 00:06:29.45\00:06:32.65 and not give them something better 00:06:32.69\00:06:34.39 exactly... that's the critical thing... I mean, 00:06:34.42\00:06:37.93 most of the clients that we work with 00:06:37.96\00:06:39.29 here in Fayetteville, Arkansas most of them again... 00:06:39.33\00:06:41.93 I live in the city... I live about 10 miles away 00:06:41.96\00:06:44.50 from the Tyson Food Headquarters so, I'm in a place where 00:06:44.53\00:06:48.20 there are a lot of chicken farms and a lot of cow breeding 00:06:48.24\00:06:51.61 and... so people love their meat and potatoes 00:06:51.64\00:06:53.64 and so when you talk about giving somebody 00:06:53.68\00:06:56.11 something that's plant-based, you know, 00:06:56.14\00:06:58.48 not any meat nor dairy it has to be 00:06:58.51\00:07:01.35 something that actually tastes good 00:07:01.38\00:07:02.78 something they're going to be attracted to eat... 00:07:02.82\00:07:05.05 so, yes, you have to be progressive... 00:07:05.09\00:07:07.49 you can't take everything away at once but it should be 00:07:07.52\00:07:10.83 definitely something that gets them excited 00:07:10.86\00:07:13.03 and you kind of want to intrigue that interest 00:07:13.06\00:07:15.16 and that's the most important thing... 00:07:15.20\00:07:16.50 get them excited about it... Yes, yes... 00:07:16.53\00:07:18.50 so tell us how you're doing that... 00:07:18.53\00:07:20.47 first of all, tell us about your food ministry 00:07:20.50\00:07:24.31 because you're a pastor 00:07:24.34\00:07:25.54 and we're going to talk about that 00:07:25.57\00:07:26.47 you also have this restaurant and all... 00:07:26.51\00:07:30.61 so tell us about that 00:07:30.65\00:07:31.81 Yeah, definitely, the Lord allowed me... some years back 00:07:31.85\00:07:35.38 back in 2008, I had a desire to start a restaurant... 00:07:35.42\00:07:38.92 and we actually started with a group of young men 00:07:38.95\00:07:42.42 it was pretty awesome... it was young men... 00:07:42.46\00:07:44.83 and we actually... pretty much turned into Chefs 00:07:44.86\00:07:47.23 we had a ministry where we trained young men 00:07:47.23\00:07:50.27 taught them vocational skills and one of the skills 00:07:50.30\00:07:52.53 that we taught them was how to cook... 00:07:52.57\00:07:53.70 and so, we just had a dream, we kept talking about it 00:07:53.74\00:07:56.74 and so we opened up a little restaurant in the city 00:07:56.77\00:07:59.71 in Prince Frederick, Maryland... it's about 30 minutes 00:07:59.74\00:08:02.08 south of Washington, D.C. and so, about 2008 00:08:02.11\00:08:05.28 we started cooking healthy food 00:08:05.31\00:08:06.82 and we started a little restaurant... 00:08:06.85\00:08:08.45 called "Eating to Live" at that time frame... 00:08:08.48\00:08:10.49 and at that time, I was learning 00:08:10.52\00:08:12.92 the restaurant business and we started on 00:08:12.95\00:08:15.09 just learning different recipes, and as we realized 00:08:15.12\00:08:18.13 as we were feeding our customers we started realizing 00:08:18.16\00:08:21.06 that people get excited... when you meet their physical needs 00:08:21.10\00:08:24.30 because they start seeing the connection of, 00:08:24.33\00:08:26.00 "Hey, you're meeting my physical needs... " 00:08:26.03\00:08:27.87 and one thing that we did as Christians 00:08:27.90\00:08:29.67 we always would want to lead them to this source... 00:08:29.70\00:08:31.44 that gives power and that gives help... 00:08:31.47\00:08:33.17 so, in the restaurant setting 00:08:33.21\00:08:35.71 we were always able to say, "Hey, we do this because 00:08:35.74\00:08:38.21 we're Christians... we're trying to lead people to Jesus 00:08:38.25\00:08:40.52 we're trying to let them know that God's plan of health 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.82 is the best plan of health... and so, back then, 00:08:42.85\00:08:46.09 again about 5 or 6 years ago, I started in the 00:08:46.12\00:08:48.52 Health Food Restaurant Ministry at that time frame... 00:08:48.56\00:08:51.69 and so, till today, I'm still doing it 00:08:51.73\00:08:54.10 and it's alive and working... 00:08:54.13\00:08:57.50 That is great, you know, you said something that 00:08:57.53\00:09:00.37 is so true... like you get people excited... 00:09:00.40\00:09:03.17 about their... when you meet their 00:09:03.20\00:09:05.87 physical needs and it's with food... 00:09:05.91\00:09:08.51 there's something about just breaking bread 00:09:08.54\00:09:11.75 having some good food being able to sit 00:09:11.78\00:09:14.92 and talk and eat... and eat your favorite foods... 00:09:14.95\00:09:18.09 but in a form... that's healthy for you... 00:09:18.12\00:09:21.36 Exactly, exactly... ... so, like I know 00:09:21.39\00:09:24.53 like on the Taste of Paradise, you came on and you did 00:09:24.56\00:09:27.86 like a healthy form of... I don't remember which recipe 00:09:27.93\00:09:32.07 you did... oh, the beef-style meat which was delicious 00:09:32.10\00:09:36.27 We did some meat balls and chicken 00:09:36.30\00:09:38.41 and I think we did some sausage patties 00:09:38.44\00:09:39.91 and different things like that... 00:09:39.94\00:09:41.38 Yes, I mean... and you had us all... we were salivating... 00:09:41.41\00:09:45.11 I love doing the Taste of Paradise 00:09:45.15\00:09:48.62 because we get to eat all the food that's left there 00:09:48.65\00:09:51.62 when everybody presents it... right... so... 00:09:51.65\00:09:54.62 that was so, so, good... so your saying that 00:09:54.66\00:09:57.59 when you are at this restaurant 00:09:57.63\00:10:00.80 when you were starting your ministry... 00:10:00.83\00:10:03.60 you realized... early on... 00:10:03.63\00:10:06.13 that just giving people really good food is 00:10:06.17\00:10:10.61 kind of the place to start. Exactly, because, you know, 00:10:10.64\00:10:13.58 we think about sharing Christ Christ's ministry was... 00:10:13.61\00:10:16.51 what did He do? He went about teaching, 00:10:16.54\00:10:18.68 He went about preaching, but He also went about healing, 00:10:18.71\00:10:21.58 and so, you know, today, most diseases are 00:10:21.62\00:10:24.19 are as a result of our diet... our lifestyle 00:10:24.22\00:10:26.69 so when you can actually help somebody to eat better 00:10:26.72\00:10:30.43 and they start losing some pounds 00:10:30.46\00:10:32.13 their cholesterol begins to drop 00:10:32.16\00:10:34.00 their blood pressure begins to drop 00:10:34.00\00:10:35.76 you have now met their need 00:10:35.80\00:10:37.57 and by doing that, the confidence has been won 00:10:37.60\00:10:39.83 and now, they become your friend... I mean, 00:10:39.87\00:10:42.07 it's not like, "Hey customers" 00:10:42.10\00:10:44.27 it's like, "Hey Judy, hey Jim, hey Tom," you know, 00:10:44.31\00:10:46.94 it's more like they become my friends now... and then, 00:10:46.98\00:10:49.98 we can... they may come to my house and have dinner, I mean 00:10:50.01\00:10:53.01 it really becomes some real serious relationships 00:10:53.05\00:10:55.08 as a result of meeting people's needs... 00:10:55.12\00:10:57.19 and that's what I've been seeing that's very consistent 00:10:57.22\00:10:59.39 with this kind of ministry... Praise the Lord... 00:10:59.42\00:11:01.92 that is so, so, interesting and so important 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.49 I was reading a book... last night... in fact... 00:11:04.53\00:11:07.76 about hypertension and clearing the arteries 00:11:07.83\00:11:11.00 and it was saying... if you make better nutritional choices, 00:11:11.03\00:11:15.27 cut back on the salt, drop 10 pounds, 00:11:15.30\00:11:19.27 you know... 00:11:19.31\00:11:20.94 and these are you can actually impact 00:11:20.98\00:11:25.31 your blood pressure... now, I'm not telling anybody 00:11:25.35\00:11:27.98 to stop taking their meds or I'm not saying that, 00:11:28.02\00:11:31.09 but I'm saying that... there are ways to deal with it 00:11:31.12\00:11:34.29 naturally and of course you do it with your physician 00:11:34.32\00:11:37.49 but there are ways to impact your blood pressure 00:11:37.53\00:11:41.23 and all these chronic diseases that you mentioned 00:11:41.26\00:11:45.13 have a lifestyle component. Exactly, exactly... 00:11:45.17\00:11:49.00 So if you change the way you're eating... 00:11:49.04\00:11:51.71 you change your rest habits you reduce your stress 00:11:51.74\00:11:57.95 you drop some pounds, as you're eating better 00:11:57.98\00:12:00.85 this is a great way to minister it really is Pastor Chew 00:12:00.88\00:12:05.75 I can see how it could be really effective 00:12:05.79\00:12:08.26 because you are making a difference 00:12:08.29\00:12:10.16 people are like, "Whoa, wait, my blood pressure 00:12:10.19\00:12:12.96 is better... my cholesterol is better... 00:12:12.99\00:12:14.56 and all I've done... is change the way I'm eating 00:12:14.60\00:12:18.47 and I like what I'm eating, That's it... that's it... 00:12:18.50\00:12:22.37 Right? I did a project one time 00:12:22.40\00:12:24.81 where we actually on African American Community 00:12:24.84\00:12:27.11 with two doctors, 00:12:27.14\00:12:28.14 Dr. Samuel Deshay, outside of Washington, D.C. 00:12:28.18\00:12:32.25 Oh yeah... pretty awesome fellow, 00:12:32.28\00:12:33.68 he's a great guy, great guy, he's in his 70s 00:12:33.72\00:12:35.38 but he has a book that they wrote called, 00:12:35.42\00:12:37.49 "Fifteen Days to Reduce High Blood Pressure 00:12:37.52\00:12:39.55 and Cholesterol" and what happened 00:12:39.59\00:12:41.66 they had me come on and work with them on this project 00:12:41.69\00:12:44.53 where we actually made all the meals 00:12:44.56\00:12:46.36 for all these individuals... we had about 60 people 00:12:46.39\00:12:49.53 that went on a completely plant-based diet 00:12:49.56\00:12:52.57 it was for 15 days... literally within 15 days 00:12:52.60\00:12:54.94 the average cholesterol dropping was about 00:12:54.97\00:12:57.27 15 to 25 points... we also saw that 00:12:57.31\00:13:01.01 within those people the average weight loss 00:13:01.04\00:13:03.88 was about 7 pounds... and so... 00:13:03.91\00:13:06.05 and that was just in 15 days... we did the blood work before 00:13:06.08\00:13:09.12 and the blood work afterwards and we were able to have 00:13:09.15\00:13:11.65 quantitative and qualitative results... 00:13:11.69\00:13:13.96 to show that this is actually legit... 00:13:13.99\00:13:15.69 and so I've seen with my own eyes... in just 15 days 00:13:15.72\00:13:18.23 what kind of results you can get by eating healthy... 00:13:18.26\00:13:20.76 and it really works... That is so great... 00:13:20.80\00:13:23.57 in my mind I'm thinking, I need to have you come here 00:13:23.60\00:13:26.23 and help... I don't have... praise the Lord 00:13:26.27\00:13:29.10 I don't have hypertension and all that stuff 00:13:29.14\00:13:31.94 and I'm thankful for all of that, 00:13:31.97\00:13:32.97 but when you want to do some things differently, 00:13:33.01\00:13:37.31 it's good to get some other input so I'm thinking to myself 00:13:37.35\00:13:40.92 "Hmmm... I need to have Pr. Chew's whole system here. " 00:13:40.95\00:13:44.05 There you go... there you go... But I love that idea 00:13:44.09\00:13:47.12 that people came away from what they do 00:13:47.16\00:13:51.56 what people don't realize Pr. Chew and I'm sure you 00:13:51.59\00:13:54.93 agree with this is that, 00:13:54.96\00:13:56.33 whatever it is... you're doing is what got you into 00:13:56.36\00:14:00.97 that health state in the first place... 00:14:01.00\00:14:03.37 Exactly... exactly... So you have to change 00:14:03.41\00:14:05.71 what you're doing... to get a different outcome... 00:14:05.74\00:14:08.71 That's it... and that's the science 00:14:08.74\00:14:10.85 it's pretty much how, and the thing is... 00:14:10.88\00:14:12.45 you have to inspire change... because you know 00:14:12.48\00:14:14.82 as people... we are ruts.. I mean... I should say 00:14:14.85\00:14:17.75 not really ruts but we live in a "rut mentality" 00:14:17.79\00:14:20.62 we eat this type of food, 00:14:20.66\00:14:22.36 we eat it almost 4 or 5 times a week 00:14:22.39\00:14:24.79 you know, and it was good... it was good... 00:14:24.83\00:14:26.70 it was easy... it was convenient... it's very easy 00:14:26.73\00:14:29.10 to go out to the fast food restaurant and get a burger 00:14:29.13\00:14:32.00 or get some French fries or some of these things... 00:14:32.03\00:14:35.07 but, you know, it takes a new desire to want to change 00:14:35.10\00:14:38.14 to eat more fruit, to eat more vegetables 00:14:38.17\00:14:40.31 and eat some more grains and things like that... 00:14:40.34\00:14:42.48 and so... it takes a desire and I believe 00:14:42.51\00:14:45.48 that it can only be inspired by the Holy Spirit 00:14:45.51\00:14:47.32 we have to pray... for change... 00:14:47.35\00:14:49.12 and I think the Lord is willing to work with us... 00:14:49.15\00:14:51.45 He says, "Beloved I wish above all things that thou mayest 00:14:51.49\00:14:54.72 prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. " 00:14:54.76\00:14:57.53 so, I believe this much... if we believe in the Lord 00:14:57.56\00:15:00.26 He can give us the strength and the help to change as well, 00:15:00.30\00:15:02.73 and that's the key... I believe. You know, in whole... 00:15:02.76\00:15:05.90 you are just really speaking the truth... 00:15:05.93\00:15:08.14 because I know when I used to practice 00:15:08.17\00:15:10.31 alternative medicine in Dallas, and I'd get people 00:15:10.34\00:15:13.27 that would come to me to find out how to get healthier 00:15:13.31\00:15:16.21 and I would put them on a healthier diet... 00:15:16.24\00:15:19.88 the resistance to change is so strong... 00:15:19.91\00:15:23.49 we have cultural things that... ways that we eat... 00:15:23.52\00:15:28.02 that has gotten us into this sickness in the first place, 00:15:28.06\00:15:30.96 and African Americans are the forerunners of disease 00:15:30.99\00:15:33.36 in this country... Yes... yes... 00:15:33.40\00:15:34.83 so... chronic disease... so we got to do something 00:15:34.86\00:15:37.47 different in order to be well. That's it... that's it... 00:15:37.50\00:15:40.90 what you are doing... is just tremendous... 00:15:40.94\00:15:43.34 so now, okay, so that's how you started... 00:15:43.37\00:15:45.71 now, what are you doing now, where are you now? 00:15:45.74\00:15:48.28 Right now, I'm actually... I am living in 00:15:48.31\00:15:50.28 Fayetteville, Arkansas, we have a church here 00:15:50.31\00:15:52.25 in Arkansas... right now actually 00:15:52.28\00:15:54.65 I'm not running a restaurant currently... 00:15:54.68\00:15:56.58 but we're running a... we have a factory... 00:15:56.62\00:15:58.49 a food factory believe it or not we have, pretty much, a factory 00:15:58.52\00:16:02.22 where we produce delicious food products... 00:16:02.26\00:16:04.96 we make... we have a product called 00:16:04.99\00:16:07.20 "Better than Meat" it looks like meat, 00:16:07.23\00:16:09.00 tastes like meat but is not meat... 00:16:09.03\00:16:10.77 and so we have different types that we actually produce 00:16:10.80\00:16:14.37 everything from mock chicken wings to meat balls to 00:16:14.40\00:16:17.94 we have something called "Fryless chicken" 00:16:17.97\00:16:20.01 we have a steak... you know... and so these products 00:16:20.04\00:16:23.14 have become a favorite of many in our community... 00:16:23.18\00:16:26.25 and I'm refining that again... our product... we always say... 00:16:26.28\00:16:29.58 it kind of has a texture and a taste and feel like real meat... 00:16:29.62\00:16:32.95 so it makes people who love to eat meat 00:16:32.99\00:16:35.29 it gives them a good transition to want to change... 00:16:35.32\00:16:38.03 and that's what we're finding... so we're producing 00:16:38.06\00:16:40.46 these healthy food products right now 00:16:40.50\00:16:42.13 we actually also are running a program called... 00:16:42.16\00:16:45.90 "Chew for Change" which is actually a community 00:16:45.93\00:16:48.87 initiative where we do a 60-day meal challenge 00:16:48.90\00:16:51.81 in the community... Okay... tell us about that... 00:16:51.84\00:16:54.68 Yeah... yeah... yeah... right now I have one gentleman 00:16:54.71\00:16:57.48 an African American young man, 29-years-old... 00:16:57.51\00:16:59.68 he is literally above 400 pounds and he just lost his father 00:16:59.71\00:17:04.49 pretty much to diabetes 00:17:04.52\00:17:07.09 and other health conditions 00:17:07.12\00:17:08.69 and so forth... but he is at a point in his life... 00:17:08.72\00:17:10.56 we had a talk with him, I think, two weeks ago... 00:17:10.59\00:17:13.40 he's at a point right now where he says, 00:17:13.43\00:17:15.13 "I want to make a real change" and so, we have people like him 00:17:15.16\00:17:18.17 who is going on the 60-day challenge hunt 00:17:18.20\00:17:20.84 we're feeding him all the meals for 60 days... 00:17:20.87\00:17:22.97 while they're on this program we're going to be 00:17:23.00\00:17:25.11 actually teaching them how to cook healthy... 00:17:25.14\00:17:27.18 so we're going to be doing cooking classes with them, 00:17:27.21\00:17:29.44 we're going to be giving them personal coaching... 00:17:29.48\00:17:31.68 and just encouraging them to go for walks 00:17:31.71\00:17:33.68 and do basic exercise... and the concept is that... 00:17:33.72\00:17:36.82 in 60 days... they're going to drop 600 points... 00:17:36.85\00:17:39.89 and the points is where... when they lose a pound 00:17:39.92\00:17:42.56 they get a point... when their cholesterol goes down 00:17:42.59\00:17:44.79 they get a point... when they walk a mile... 00:17:44.83\00:17:46.63 they get a point... when they drink water 00:17:46.66\00:17:48.40 they get a point... so, the goal is that as they 00:17:48.43\00:17:51.03 actually are living this lifestyle... 00:17:51.07\00:17:53.13 they are going to actually pick up habits 00:17:53.17\00:17:55.20 that can be for a lifetime... 00:17:55.24\00:17:56.54 and so it's really a complete program... 00:17:56.57\00:17:58.84 and the last thing I'll says is 00:17:58.87\00:18:00.18 it's really amazing because were able to get on 00:18:00.21\00:18:02.51 the Fox News Network... in our Community... 00:18:02.54\00:18:04.85 and I was able to get it into papers and articles 00:18:04.88\00:18:07.82 and newspaper and so, the Community is 00:18:07.85\00:18:10.42 embracing the project and I'm hoping that 00:18:10.45\00:18:12.95 it's going to be a really great witness, you know, 00:18:12.99\00:18:15.39 for those in our Community, showing them that we can 00:18:15.42\00:18:17.79 chew for change... That's... Oh man! that's so 00:18:17.83\00:18:20.90 exciting... that is so exciting because what you're saying is 00:18:20.93\00:18:25.57 you're giving people the tools that they need 00:18:25.60\00:18:28.80 to get well and to stay well... Exactly... 00:18:28.84\00:18:31.97 ...to stay well... you got it... you got it... exactly... 00:18:32.01\00:18:35.18 and they feel good about themselves because really... 00:18:35.21\00:18:38.31 when you're carrying all that weight... 00:18:38.35\00:18:40.12 you know, they had... I've seen it over and over again 00:18:40.15\00:18:43.59 you've seen people who put on those really fat suits... 00:18:43.62\00:18:46.99 and they put clothes over them 00:18:47.02\00:18:48.49 and they go out into the Community... 00:18:48.52\00:18:50.53 and it shows how people treat you... 00:18:50.56\00:18:52.49 when you're obese versus when you're not... 00:18:52.53\00:18:55.30 and invariably... everybody I've seen that has put on 00:18:55.33\00:19:01.27 that fat suit has ended up crying about how 00:19:01.30\00:19:04.54 they were treated... Exactly... 00:19:04.57\00:19:06.47 so, not only do you feel bad... but you feel badly about 00:19:06.51\00:19:10.68 the way you look and so... you just interact 00:19:10.71\00:19:13.68 that way... Exactly... 00:19:13.72\00:19:15.38 So, you're saying that you're giving people 00:19:15.42\00:19:18.29 with this 60-day challenge... the tools that they need 00:19:18.32\00:19:22.32 you're cooking for them, you're teaching them 00:19:22.36\00:19:24.56 how to keep this up themselves. Exactly... exactly... 00:19:24.59\00:19:28.26 That is so amazing... ... it's amazing because 00:19:28.30\00:19:30.67 the great thing about it is... we can really have 00:19:30.70\00:19:33.00 tangible impact on people's lives... 00:19:33.03\00:19:35.17 you know, it's not like I'm just saying... 00:19:35.20\00:19:37.04 you know, I do a lot of classes around the Country 00:19:37.07\00:19:39.17 we can go into a place and say, "You should just eat healthy. " 00:19:39.21\00:19:42.04 But when I go in there and say, 00:19:42.08\00:19:43.65 "Listen, I'm not only going to say to you... to eat health, 00:19:43.68\00:19:46.98 but I'm going to teach you how to make a change" 00:19:47.02\00:19:49.28 and I think that's the personal... 00:19:49.32\00:19:51.69 the personal contact that our Savior, Christ, 00:19:51.72\00:19:54.62 you know... He had personal contact 00:19:54.66\00:19:56.52 with people... and He had tangible results 00:19:56.56\00:19:58.69 because He worked with them... 00:19:58.73\00:20:00.00 and so this motto is really... is designed to have it 00:20:00.03\00:20:02.66 so we can have tangible impact on people's lives... 00:20:02.70\00:20:05.30 and so, it's really special... really special... 00:20:05.33\00:20:07.07 That is so great... so now, how can somebody like me 00:20:07.10\00:20:11.31 who is not in your Community... 00:20:11.34\00:20:12.91 take part in this 60-day challenge 00:20:12.94\00:20:15.21 let's say... a viewer who is watching this program right now 00:20:15.24\00:20:18.38 wants to change their lives... what can they do? 00:20:18.41\00:20:23.69 Well, you know, we always say that sometimes... 00:20:23.72\00:20:27.89 especially if you don't have all the resources... 00:20:27.92\00:20:30.13 in the sense that... you don't have all the education 00:20:30.16\00:20:32.13 we always like to say, "Take baby steps" 00:20:32.16\00:20:34.03 you know, you can start out... we always like to advocate 00:20:34.10\00:20:37.23 the meatless Monday concept or you take more than 2 days 00:20:37.27\00:20:39.80 out of the week... you say, "I'm going to go for a walk, 00:20:39.83\00:20:42.37 and I'm going to eat a plant-based meal this day. " 00:20:42.40\00:20:45.07 and so, I always say, "Take small steps... 00:20:45.11\00:20:48.58 and those small steps will become bigger steps, 00:20:48.61\00:20:51.08 and those bigger steps can then become a lifestyle... " 00:20:51.11\00:20:53.52 and so, we always say, 00:20:53.55\00:20:54.88 "A lot of times if you don't have all of the help 00:20:54.92\00:20:57.65 in your area, the key is... that you start out 00:20:57.69\00:20:59.92 with what you can... " if you do have that help 00:20:59.95\00:21:02.29 and you can find some people that can maybe help you 00:21:02.32\00:21:04.23 with eating healthy... go ahead and get them 00:21:04.26\00:21:06.09 to help you to maybe transitioning your lifestyle... 00:21:06.13\00:21:08.86 but the key is this... pray for a desire, number one, 00:21:08.90\00:21:11.60 and then as you pray for that desire, 00:21:11.63\00:21:13.47 God will then become your teacher... 00:21:13.50\00:21:15.27 He will teach us how to cook healthy... He says... 00:21:15.30\00:21:17.91 He wants us to prosper and be in health... 00:21:17.94\00:21:20.01 and so... if we pray... God is able to do 00:21:20.04\00:21:23.45 the impossible and so... 00:21:23.48\00:21:24.88 if you love to eat things that are fried... 00:21:24.91\00:21:26.58 and things that have a lot of fat... 00:21:26.61\00:21:28.18 God can help us to love to eat things that are 00:21:28.22\00:21:30.22 made with olive oil and sautéed rather than 00:21:30.25\00:21:32.65 having all of that cholesterol and all of that extra 00:21:32.69\00:21:34.76 added saturated fat... so it can be done in a way 00:21:34.79\00:21:37.59 that's healthy... but we have to pray 00:21:37.63\00:21:39.23 and ask the Holy Spirit to inspire us... 00:21:39.26\00:21:40.80 and I believe that God will answer that prayer every time... 00:21:40.83\00:21:43.57 Amen... yes He will... He will, "If any man wills to do His will 00:21:43.60\00:21:48.20 He will know of the teaching" right? 00:21:48.24\00:21:50.67 Amen... If you want to make it 00:21:50.71\00:21:52.94 to be different... if you want things to change 00:21:52.97\00:21:55.24 and you seek God first and ask Him, 00:21:55.28\00:21:57.48 "Lord, please... just help me to change... " 00:21:57.51\00:21:59.55 He will hear 00:21:59.58\00:22:01.38 and honor that prayer... 00:22:01.42\00:22:02.52 Most definitely... most definitely... 00:22:02.55\00:22:04.52 So, how did you get into Ministry... Pastor Chew... 00:22:04.55\00:22:07.79 how did you...? It was kind of interesting 00:22:07.82\00:22:10.73 my story kind of started believe it or not 00:22:10.76\00:22:13.63 I kind of like to go back and say... 00:22:13.66\00:22:15.16 kind of my history... I started about 12 years ago 00:22:15.20\00:22:17.93 as a young man... about 18 years old... 00:22:17.97\00:22:19.73 and I had a Track Scholarship to Howard University 00:22:19.77\00:22:22.90 and I ended up... believe it or not... 00:22:22.94\00:22:24.97 I ended up breaking my leg in the track race... 00:22:25.01\00:22:27.14 and it just turned my whole life around 00:22:27.18\00:22:29.84 and the Lord called me... to stand for Him... 00:22:29.88\00:22:32.55 and I mean... 00:22:32.58\00:22:33.88 I had some decisions to make at that time... 00:22:33.92\00:22:35.65 but I gave my heart to Christ 00:22:35.68\00:22:36.79 at that time... became baptized... 00:22:36.82\00:22:38.22 about a year-and-a-half later after that... 00:22:38.25\00:22:41.09 I ended up becoming... doing Colporteuring 00:22:41.12\00:22:43.86 and starting my own Bible work with a Ministry in Maryland... 00:22:43.89\00:22:47.20 while I was doing that... believe it or not... 00:22:47.23\00:22:49.26 we became very entrepreneurial and we actually began 00:22:49.30\00:22:51.90 to make granola... and began... learning how to bake bread... 00:22:51.93\00:22:54.44 and so, as I was canvassing and knocking on doors 00:22:54.47\00:22:57.34 selling books and giving Bible studies... 00:22:57.37\00:22:59.01 we were asking the customers 00:22:59.04\00:23:01.08 I mean... the people that we were working with 00:23:01.11\00:23:02.78 saying, "Hey, we have some great, delicious granola" 00:23:02.81\00:23:04.98 we said, we had "crunchy, brunchy granola... 00:23:05.01\00:23:06.88 we don't box... but we have a granola that will knock you out" 00:23:06.92\00:23:10.22 and so... we would actually, 00:23:10.25\00:23:11.79 you know, people that we would meet in the Community 00:23:11.82\00:23:14.26 we would actually sell them our bread and our granola, 00:23:14.29\00:23:16.69 and so, I began... at that point 00:23:16.73\00:23:19.03 kind of... doing Health Ministry 00:23:19.06\00:23:21.10 along with again doing Bible Work 00:23:21.13\00:23:23.10 teaching people the Word of God and I mean, all along the way, 00:23:23.13\00:23:26.67 I was kind of learning about Ministry and also Health 00:23:26.70\00:23:29.47 to make the long story short kind of fast forward... 00:23:29.50\00:23:32.44 I ended up moving to Arkansas, about 3 years ago, 00:23:32.47\00:23:35.34 and my wife was actually, 00:23:35.38\00:23:36.88 even though we were not married at that time... 00:23:36.91\00:23:38.35 but we ended up getting married... 00:23:38.38\00:23:40.55 about a month before I got married... 00:23:40.58\00:23:42.68 I got a call... to become a Pastor of the Church 00:23:42.72\00:23:45.65 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and they asked me 00:23:45.69\00:23:48.56 to come on and consult with Louisiana Conference 00:23:48.59\00:23:50.69 they called me... to become a Pastor... 00:23:50.73\00:23:52.56 and I've been pastoring for the last... almost 3 years now 00:23:52.59\00:23:55.43 and so... it was kind of a unique circumstance 00:23:55.46\00:23:59.07 but the Lord had His eye on it all along the way... 00:23:59.10\00:24:01.77 Look at how God just does... what He does... 00:24:01.80\00:24:05.97 now, you had this scholarship to Howard University... 00:24:06.01\00:24:10.11 for Track... but you ended up breaking your leg... 00:24:10.15\00:24:14.18 and so... God had this other path for you... all along... 00:24:14.22\00:24:18.12 this divine plan... right? Yeah, exactly... exactly... 00:24:18.15\00:24:21.99 so, you're thinking that your life 00:24:22.02\00:24:23.66 is just never going to be the same... 00:24:23.69\00:24:25.29 and it's just a mess now... 00:24:25.33\00:24:26.76 because I can't do the scholarship 00:24:26.80\00:24:28.43 and then God had you going into Colporteuring... 00:24:28.46\00:24:31.47 Colporteuring and building you up in the Faith... 00:24:31.50\00:24:34.50 Exactly... exactly... Now, at what point did 00:24:34.54\00:24:37.07 you meet your wife... before you moved to Arkansas, or 00:24:37.11\00:24:40.41 Believe it or not... we met, actually, 00:24:40.44\00:24:42.48 when we were about 20-years-old... 1920?.. 00:24:42.51\00:24:44.45 and we actually colporteured together... believe it or not... 00:24:44.48\00:24:48.38 and that was some 10 to 11 ago and so she and I became friends 00:24:48.42\00:24:52.32 we didn't have any interest at that time 00:24:52.35\00:24:54.86 but about 3 or 4 years ago... the Lord... 00:24:54.89\00:24:57.33 you know how the birds and bees 00:24:57.36\00:24:58.59 they just start working... and... you know... 00:24:58.63\00:25:00.63 you get a little excited and as a man... the Bible says, 00:25:00.66\00:25:03.37 "When he finds a good wife... he finds a good thing" 00:25:03.40\00:25:06.07 and so, I kind of had that desire with her 00:25:06.10\00:25:08.14 and the Lord led... and she's a really awesome partner... 00:25:08.17\00:25:12.11 I mean... in ministry with me... Yes, and I'm so excited because 00:25:12.14\00:25:15.81 you and your lovely wife, Tina, are going to do a program 00:25:15.84\00:25:18.81 for Dare to Dream for us... 00:25:18.85\00:25:20.35 Exactly... exactly... we're really excited... 00:25:20.38\00:25:23.22 so, we have to bring her on next time... 00:25:23.25\00:25:24.99 she couldn't be with us this time... 00:25:25.02\00:25:26.69 as she's out of town... but we're going to have to 00:25:26.72\00:25:28.42 bring her on next time to talk about 00:25:28.46\00:25:30.49 how you guys met... because she'll give us 00:25:30.53\00:25:32.93 the 411... she'll give us the girl's point, 00:25:32.96\00:25:35.30 There you go... exactly... ... on how you guys met 00:25:35.33\00:25:39.53 so, now, where do you see your Ministry going... 00:25:39.57\00:25:43.64 are you looking to establish restaurants 00:25:43.67\00:25:47.58 or you looking to do trainings... 00:25:47.61\00:25:49.44 where... where are you going with it? 00:25:49.48\00:25:51.31 You know, our motto is, to really work on that facet 00:25:51.35\00:25:54.32 but we do have a focus, our dream, I would say, 00:25:54.35\00:25:57.19 is to have a Production Factory that can actually be 00:25:57.22\00:26:02.12 as a source of employment 00:26:02.16\00:26:03.39 to those living in the inner cities 00:26:03.43\00:26:05.46 we find that... one of the greatest things 00:26:05.49\00:26:08.03 that we find is... especially in African American Communities 00:26:08.06\00:26:10.17 are no jobs... you know... there's not opportunity 00:26:10.20\00:26:13.00 for... especially... young African Americans 00:26:13.03\00:26:15.24 sometimes to have opportunities for employment 00:26:15.27\00:26:17.41 careers... and so... one of our dreams is actually 00:26:17.44\00:26:20.18 to set up a factory with our food products 00:26:20.21\00:26:22.98 our food products have been approved to sell in some 00:26:23.01\00:26:25.08 retail outlets like Whole foods Market 00:26:25.11\00:26:27.08 and other stores... so the Lord is really opening 00:26:27.12\00:26:29.48 great opportunities... and then secondly, 00:26:29.52\00:26:31.65 on top of that... our goal is to actually 00:26:31.69\00:26:33.79 with our factories to set up almost like a small 00:26:33.82\00:26:36.86 restaurant franchise... is our other secondary goal... 00:26:36.89\00:26:39.63 you know, with our food products and so... we hope 00:26:39.66\00:26:42.36 that we can have little small restaurants 00:26:42.40\00:26:43.97 all around the Country this is a long-term goal 00:26:44.00\00:26:46.67 but this is a dream... and that's what we're hoping 00:26:46.70\00:26:49.34 to see accomplished here in the next 10 to 15 years 00:26:49.37\00:26:51.97 is that God would open up a factory 00:26:52.01\00:26:53.64 and build small restaurants that we can actually 00:26:53.68\00:26:55.94 set up... and that can help people and change lives... 00:26:55.98\00:26:59.31 and that's our prayer... That sounds so tremendous, 00:26:59.35\00:27:02.65 what a blessing that would be. Yeah... yeah... 00:27:02.68\00:27:05.75 Thank you so much for being with us... 00:27:05.79\00:27:08.69 Do you have a parting thought 00:27:08.72\00:27:09.92 that you would like to give the viewers? 00:27:09.96\00:27:11.63 Well, definitely I would say that God is the One that 00:27:11.66\00:27:16.46 created us... you know the Bible says 00:27:16.50\00:27:17.90 that we were formed in His image... 00:27:17.93\00:27:19.47 and He formed us with His hands... 00:27:19.50\00:27:20.97 and the Bible says, "He breathed in man 00:27:21.00\00:27:23.04 the breath of life... " and I would always like to say, 00:27:23.07\00:27:25.74 when it comes to health, we were made from dust 00:27:25.77\00:27:27.91 we were made... from the breath of God 00:27:27.94\00:27:29.68 so that breath... that breath is what gives us... 00:27:29.71\00:27:32.71 it inspires us... to do what He wants us to do 00:27:32.75\00:27:35.72 He's the One that gives us the power, 00:27:35.75\00:27:37.79 the desire... the desire to change... 00:27:37.82\00:27:39.85 as long as, I would say, 00:27:39.89\00:27:41.32 that if you're struggling with health 00:27:41.36\00:27:43.26 you may have some illnesses, you may not see how 00:27:43.29\00:27:45.93 you can change those things... 00:27:45.96\00:27:47.20 just say a simple prayer... and watch God 00:27:47.23\00:27:50.10 bring the people in your path 00:27:50.13\00:27:51.80 to place information in your path 00:27:51.83\00:27:53.57 you know, and I know that God is able to do that 00:27:53.60\00:27:56.07 to do abundantly, exceedingly above what we can actually think 00:27:56.10\00:27:59.34 Thank you so much Pastor Chew, and thank you for tuning in... 00:27:59.37\00:28:02.31 Tune in next time... it just wouldn't be the same... 00:28:02.34\00:28:04.58 without you... 00:28:04.61\00:28:05.88
