"Chew" 00:00:58.01\00:01:02.02 where did that name come from? how did you get the name "Chew" 00:01:02.05\00:01:05.76 that's your real name isn't it? 00:01:05.79\00:01:07.08 That's my real last name, exactly... 00:01:07.12\00:01:09.25 Wow, did you get teased a lot? 00:01:09.28\00:01:10.97 You know, I got teased more on my first name... 00:01:11.01\00:01:14.18 growing up... and then as I get older, 00:01:14.21\00:01:15.82 I get more teased on my last name... 00:01:15.86\00:01:17.39 Now, your first name is...? 00:01:17.43\00:01:21.32 It's really GW... it's just two letters... 00:01:21.36\00:01:24.04 No... it doesn't stand for anything... it's GW 00:01:24.07\00:01:26.72 That's my real name... exactly... 00:01:26.75\00:01:28.48 GW Chew... GW Chew... and actually 00:01:28.52\00:01:31.28 my father's name was Grandwell Waymond Chew 00:01:31.32\00:01:34.04 and I got the "G" from Grandwell and "W" from Waymand 00:01:34.08\00:01:36.67 and that's how I got the name GW... 00:01:36.70\00:01:38.62 so, that's my real name... 00:01:38.65\00:01:40.46 All right... all right... and so, when did you find 00:01:40.50\00:01:44.35 how did you get the name... give us a little history about that 00:01:44.38\00:01:48.68 Yeah no problem... it's really an interesting story for me 00:01:48.72\00:01:51.29 you know, I'm a chef and so I go by... Chef Chew 00:01:51.32\00:01:54.21 and so... believe it or not... when I was three weeks old 00:01:54.25\00:01:57.31 the Lord allowed me to get adopted into a wonderful family 00:01:57.34\00:02:00.37 and so, I was actually adopted into a family 00:02:00.41\00:02:02.81 that had this last name Chew... and I'm African American family 00:02:02.84\00:02:06.59 and it's just been a blessing... they actually led me to the Lord 00:02:06.63\00:02:10.34 you know, through my family, my uncles and my aunts 00:02:10.38\00:02:12.53 and it's just been a... kind of... 00:02:12.56\00:02:14.02 the name has kind of given me my destiny, 00:02:14.06\00:02:16.17 it's kind of amazing... and being adopted... 00:02:16.20\00:02:18.28 Isn't that interesting how your name... 00:02:18.31\00:02:21.78 your name is tied in with what you do... 00:02:21.81\00:02:25.21 Exactly... exactly... That is tremendous 00:02:25.24\00:02:28.13 and so when did you decide that you wanted to go into... 00:02:28.17\00:02:32.67 being a chef... how did that happen? 00:02:32.71\00:02:35.05 Well, it kind of started... you know... 00:02:35.09\00:02:37.21 I believe that my father... he actually really loved to cook 00:02:37.24\00:02:41.17 he would always do barbecue grills and, you know, 00:02:41.20\00:02:43.84 just do all kinds of this interesting cuisines at home... 00:02:43.87\00:02:47.18 and so... growing up... I just got a lot from my family 00:02:47.21\00:02:50.48 you know, from cooking... my aunts and my uncles 00:02:50.52\00:02:52.12 would always have cookouts... and Thanksgivings would be this 00:02:52.16\00:02:56.04 I mean, everything that you can imagine, 00:02:56.07\00:02:57.72 but when I got to my early 20s I learned about healthy cooking 00:02:57.75\00:03:01.51 learned about eating a vegetarian lifestyle... 00:03:01.55\00:03:04.17 and I just kind of had an intriguing desire... 00:03:04.21\00:03:06.68 to want to use this food as a way to minister to people. 00:03:06.72\00:03:09.94 So, you started in your 20s, you loved watching your dad cook 00:03:09.97\00:03:14.53 and I think... people need to know that men cook... 00:03:14.57\00:03:18.94 there's nothing intrinsically "female" about cooking 00:03:18.97\00:03:23.31 Yeah, yeah, definitely... Right... 00:03:23.34\00:03:25.96 Yeah... So, you watched your dad cook 00:03:26.00\00:03:28.55 and from him, you kind of got a love for the kitchen... 00:03:28.58\00:03:34.29 Is that it? Exactly... I mean, 00:03:34.32\00:03:36.20 from watching him in the kitchen being creative 00:03:36.23\00:03:38.46 I mean, he made stuff that was just creative... 00:03:38.50\00:03:40.46 I mean, the stuff you would never think about... 00:03:40.50\00:03:43.03 when I was a young boy, we had an ice storm... 00:03:43.07\00:03:45.53 believe it or not... and all of our electricity went out 00:03:45.57\00:03:48.10 and so, we had a woodstove growing up... 00:03:48.13\00:03:50.96 and so, my father actually made a Lasagna dish 00:03:50.99\00:03:53.98 on the woodstove... and he was just so excited 00:03:54.01\00:03:56.92 I mean, to see this was creative and using just whatever 00:03:56.96\00:04:00.79 he had... to just kind of make things really tasty 00:04:00.82\00:04:03.33 so it was pretty cool... That is so neat, that is so neat 00:04:03.37\00:04:06.79 so, parents that are watching, I mean, dads, 00:04:06.83\00:04:10.09 take your kids in the kitchen and do some fun things... 00:04:10.13\00:04:13.82 Exactly... Right... 00:04:13.86\00:04:14.97 Exactly... exactly... Do you do that with your kids? 00:04:15.00\00:04:18.38 Well, my son is only 9- months-old right now, so 00:04:18.42\00:04:21.75 and hopefully soon, I will be able to take him 00:04:21.79\00:04:25.05 in the kitchen... but, you know, that's a prayer coming as he 00:04:25.08\00:04:27.83 gets older... definitely... Yes, that would be kind of 00:04:27.87\00:04:30.46 hard to do... right... taking your 9-month-old 00:04:30.49\00:04:33.16 to the kitchen right now, Yeah... 00:04:33.19\00:04:34.95 But... so that would be so, so good 00:04:34.98\00:04:38.52 and just kind of carry on the "Chew Tradition" 00:04:38.56\00:04:40.81 Exactly... give him something to chew on... 00:04:40.84\00:04:43.02 Give him something to chew on... 00:04:43.06\00:04:46.44 well you have been here to Dare to Dream 00:04:46.48\00:04:49.45 and you've been on the Taste of Paradise 00:04:49.48\00:04:52.42 with Nyse Collins and we had a chance to taste 00:04:52.46\00:04:56.20 some of that delicious food, it is so great... 00:04:56.24\00:04:59.95 what made you decide that you wanted to do the 00:04:59.98\00:05:03.78 vegan cooking versus just general cooking? 00:05:03.82\00:05:07.23 Well, you know, as you look in the Scripture 00:05:07.26\00:05:10.64 you look in the book of Genesis and it talks about... 00:05:10.67\00:05:13.70 God gave us a diet of eating pretty much plant foods 00:05:13.74\00:05:16.73 from the very onset... meat wasn't allowed 00:05:16.77\00:05:18.98 until after the flood... and then through much research 00:05:19.02\00:05:22.15 we find that eating a plant-based diet 00:05:22.19\00:05:24.01 is pretty much an optimal diet 00:05:24.05\00:05:26.92 and so, I just kind of figured usually growing up... 00:05:26.96\00:05:29.70 I used to eat vegetarian food but it wasn't always 00:05:29.73\00:05:32.49 the greatest... and I just had a desire to say, 00:05:32.53\00:05:35.22 "Can we make healthy food that actually tastes good... " 00:05:35.25\00:05:38.27 and so that was kind of like a challenge for me... 00:05:38.30\00:05:41.23 to figure out how to make things that we love 00:05:41.27\00:05:44.16 pizzas and wraps and stir fries... 00:05:44.19\00:05:46.21 and even mock chicken and stuff like that 00:05:46.25\00:05:49.43 to make it taste actually good, so people will say, 00:05:49.46\00:05:52.11 "Man, I can't believe this isn't actually chicken... " 00:05:52.15\00:05:54.23 so, I have a little statement that says, 00:05:54.27\00:05:56.61 "Looks like chicken, tastes like chicken, 00:05:56.64\00:05:58.59 but, guess what, it's not chicken... 00:05:58.63\00:06:00.51 crispy on the outside and white in the middle 00:06:00.54\00:06:03.44 oh, it's delicious... " and so, I make it fun, 00:06:03.47\00:06:05.93 that's one of the things... you got to make it fun 00:06:05.97\00:06:08.89 and people will eat something if it looks like it 00:06:08.92\00:06:11.80 and it tastes like it and it's actually good 00:06:11.84\00:06:13.51 but it's healthy... they'll go for it... every single time... 00:06:13.54\00:06:15.61 Absolutely, one of the things that I know to be true 00:06:15.65\00:06:19.47 is that... when you're working with people 00:06:19.51\00:06:21.63 and let's say they've been traditionally 00:06:21.67\00:06:24.28 making really bad choices 00:06:24.31\00:06:26.23 food choices and lifestyle choices and stuff, 00:06:26.26\00:06:29.50 you can't take away... their favorite foods 00:06:29.54\00:06:32.74 and not give them something better 00:06:32.78\00:06:34.49 exactly... that's the critical thing... I mean, 00:06:34.52\00:06:38.03 most of the clients that we work with 00:06:38.06\00:06:39.38 here in Fayetteville, Arkansas most of them again... 00:06:39.42\00:06:42.03 I live in the city... I live about 10 miles away 00:06:42.07\00:06:44.62 from the Tyson Food Headquarters so, I'm in a place where 00:06:44.65\00:06:48.32 there are a lot of chicken farms and a lot of cow breeding 00:06:48.36\00:06:51.72 and... so people love their meat and potatoes 00:06:51.76\00:06:53.75 and so when you talk about giving somebody 00:06:53.78\00:06:56.20 something that's plant-based, you know, 00:06:56.24\00:06:58.59 not any meat nor dairy it has to be 00:06:58.62\00:07:01.44 something that actually tastes good 00:07:01.48\00:07:02.90 something they're going to be attracted to eat... 00:07:02.93\00:07:05.14 so, yes, you have to be progressive... 00:07:05.17\00:07:07.58 you can't take everything away at once but it should be 00:07:07.61\00:07:10.93 definitely something that gets them excited 00:07:10.96\00:07:13.12 and you kind of want to intrigue that interest 00:07:13.15\00:07:15.27 and that's the most important thing... 00:07:15.30\00:07:16.60 get them excited about it... Yes, yes... 00:07:16.64\00:07:18.60 so tell us how you're doing that... 00:07:18.64\00:07:20.58 first of all, tell us about your food ministry 00:07:20.61\00:07:24.42 because you're a pastor 00:07:24.46\00:07:25.64 and we're going to talk about that 00:07:25.67\00:07:26.73 you also have this restaurant and all... 00:07:26.76\00:07:30.71 so tell us about that 00:07:30.74\00:07:31.80 Yeah, definitely, the Lord allowed me... some years back 00:07:31.84\00:07:35.47 back in 2008, I had a desire to start a restaurant... 00:07:35.50\00:07:39.01 and we actually started with a group of young men 00:07:39.05\00:07:42.52 it was pretty awesome... it was young men... 00:07:42.56\00:07:44.93 and we actually... pretty much turned into Chefs 00:07:44.96\00:07:47.30 we had a ministry where we trained young men 00:07:47.34\00:07:50.40 taught them vocational skills and one of the skills 00:07:50.43\00:07:52.65 that we taught them was how to cook... 00:07:52.69\00:07:53.91 and so, we just had a dream, we kept talking about it 00:07:53.95\00:07:56.86 and so we opened up a little restaurant in the city 00:07:56.89\00:07:59.82 in Prince Frederick, Maryland... it's about 30 minutes 00:07:59.85\00:08:02.16 south of Washington, D.C. and so, about 2008 00:08:02.20\00:08:05.38 we started cooking healthy food 00:08:05.41\00:08:06.91 and we started a little restaurant... 00:08:06.95\00:08:08.55 called "Eating to Live" at that time frame... 00:08:08.58\00:08:10.56 and at that time, I was learning 00:08:10.60\00:08:13.01 the restaurant business and we started on 00:08:13.04\00:08:15.19 just learning different recipes, and as we realized 00:08:15.22\00:08:18.22 as we were feeding our customers we started realizing 00:08:18.25\00:08:21.17 that people get excited... when you meet their physical needs 00:08:21.21\00:08:24.41 because they start seeing the connection of, 00:08:24.45\00:08:26.11 "Hey, you're meeting my physical needs... " 00:08:26.15\00:08:27.97 and one thing that we did as Christians 00:08:28.01\00:08:29.76 we always would want to lead them to this source... 00:08:29.80\00:08:31.55 that gives power and that gives help... 00:08:31.58\00:08:33.27 so, in the restaurant setting 00:08:33.30\00:08:35.80 we were always able to say, "Hey, we do this because 00:08:35.84\00:08:38.31 we're Christians... we're trying to lead people to Jesus 00:08:38.34\00:08:40.63 we're trying to let them know that God's plan of health 00:08:40.66\00:08:42.91 is the best plan of health... and so, back then, 00:08:42.94\00:08:46.19 again about 5 or 6 years ago, I started in the 00:08:46.23\00:08:48.61 Health Food Restaurant Ministry at that time frame... 00:08:48.65\00:08:51.80 and so, till today, I'm still doing it 00:08:51.83\00:08:54.21 and it's alive and working... 00:08:54.25\00:08:57.60 That is great, you know, you said something that 00:08:57.64\00:09:00.46 is so true... like you get people excited... 00:09:00.50\00:09:03.29 about their... when you meet their 00:09:03.32\00:09:05.99 physical needs and it's with food... 00:09:06.02\00:09:08.62 there's something about just breaking bread 00:09:08.65\00:09:11.85 having some good food being able to sit 00:09:11.89\00:09:15.02 and talk and eat... and eat your favorite foods... 00:09:15.06\00:09:18.20 but in a form... that's healthy for you... 00:09:18.23\00:09:21.45 Exactly, exactly... ... so, like I know 00:09:21.48\00:09:24.63 like on the Taste of Paradise, you came on and you did 00:09:24.66\00:09:27.98 like a healthy form of... I don't remember which recipe 00:09:28.01\00:09:32.19 you did... oh, the beef-style meat which was delicious 00:09:32.22\00:09:36.37 We did some meat balls and chicken 00:09:36.40\00:09:38.53 and I think we did some sausage patties 00:09:38.56\00:09:40.03 and different things like that... 00:09:40.06\00:09:41.46 Yes, I mean... and you had us all... we were salivating... 00:09:41.50\00:09:45.22 I love doing the Taste of Paradise 00:09:45.25\00:09:48.72 because we get to eat all the food that's left there 00:09:48.76\00:09:51.71 when everybody presents it... right... so... 00:09:51.74\00:09:54.71 that was so, so, good... so your saying that 00:09:54.75\00:09:57.68 when you are at this restaurant 00:09:57.72\00:10:00.88 when you were starting your ministry... 00:10:00.92\00:10:03.73 you realized... early on... 00:10:03.76\00:10:06.24 that just giving people really good food is 00:10:06.27\00:10:10.70 kind of the place to start. Exactly, because, you know, 00:10:10.74\00:10:13.68 we think about sharing Christ Christ's ministry was... 00:10:13.72\00:10:16.63 what did He do? He went about teaching, 00:10:16.66\00:10:18.77 He went about preaching, but He also went about healing, 00:10:18.80\00:10:21.70 and so, you know, today, most diseases are 00:10:21.73\00:10:24.28 are as a result of our diet... our lifestyle 00:10:24.31\00:10:26.79 so when you can actually help somebody to eat better 00:10:26.83\00:10:30.51 and they start losing some pounds 00:10:30.54\00:10:32.22 their cholesterol begins to drop 00:10:32.26\00:10:34.08 their blood pressure begins to drop 00:10:34.11\00:10:35.90 you have now met their need 00:10:35.93\00:10:37.67 and by doing that, the confidence has been won 00:10:37.70\00:10:39.96 and now, they become your friend... I mean, 00:10:39.99\00:10:42.19 it's not like, "Hey customers" 00:10:42.23\00:10:44.38 it's like, "Hey Judy, hey Jim, hey Tom," you know, 00:10:44.41\00:10:47.06 it's more like they become my friends now... and then, 00:10:47.09\00:10:50.09 we can... they may come to my house and have dinner, I mean 00:10:50.13\00:10:53.12 it really becomes some real serious relationships 00:10:53.15\00:10:55.17 as a result of meeting people's needs... 00:10:55.20\00:10:57.29 and that's what I've been seeing that's very consistent 00:10:57.33\00:10:59.48 with this kind of ministry... Praise the Lord... 00:10:59.52\00:11:02.00 that is so, so, interesting and so important 00:11:02.04\00:11:04.57 I was reading a book... last night... in fact... 00:11:04.60\00:11:07.87 about hypertension and clearing the arteries 00:11:07.91\00:11:11.11 and it was saying... if you make better nutritional choices, 00:11:11.14\00:11:15.38 cut back on the salt, drop 10 pounds, 00:11:15.42\00:11:19.39 you know... 00:11:19.42\00:11:21.04 and these are you can actually impact 00:11:21.08\00:11:25.40 your blood pressure... now, I'm not telling anybody 00:11:25.44\00:11:28.07 to stop taking their meds or I'm not saying that, 00:11:28.11\00:11:31.20 but I'm saying that... there are ways to deal with it 00:11:31.23\00:11:34.40 naturally and of course you do it with your physician 00:11:34.43\00:11:37.56 but there are ways to impact your blood pressure 00:11:37.60\00:11:41.35 and all these chronic diseases that you mentioned 00:11:41.38\00:11:45.25 have a lifestyle component. Exactly, exactly... 00:11:45.28\00:11:49.12 So if you change the way you're eating... 00:11:49.15\00:11:51.80 you change your rest habits you reduce your stress 00:11:51.84\00:11:58.05 you drop some pounds, as you're eating better 00:11:58.08\00:12:00.95 this is a great way to minister it really is Pastor Chew 00:12:00.99\00:12:05.84 I can see how it could be really effective 00:12:05.88\00:12:08.35 because you are making a difference 00:12:08.39\00:12:10.24 people are like, "Whoa, wait, my blood pressure 00:12:10.28\00:12:13.04 is better... my cholesterol is better... 00:12:13.07\00:12:14.67 and all I've done... is change the way I'm eating 00:12:14.70\00:12:18.59 and I like what I'm eating, That's it... that's it... 00:12:18.63\00:12:22.47 Right? I did a project one time 00:12:22.51\00:12:24.91 where we actually on African American Community 00:12:24.95\00:12:27.22 with two doctors, 00:12:27.25\00:12:28.28 Dr. Samuel Deshay, outside of Washington, D.C. 00:12:28.32\00:12:32.34 Oh yeah... pretty awesome fellow, 00:12:32.37\00:12:33.79 he's a great guy, great guy, he's in his 70s 00:12:33.83\00:12:35.46 but he has a book that they wrote called, 00:12:35.50\00:12:37.56 "Fifteen Days to Reduce High Blood Pressure 00:12:37.60\00:12:39.63 and Cholesterol" and what happened 00:12:39.67\00:12:41.75 they had me come on and work with them on this project 00:12:41.78\00:12:44.61 where we actually made all the meals 00:12:44.64\00:12:46.45 for all these individuals... we had about 60 people 00:12:46.49\00:12:49.64 that went on a completely plant-based diet 00:12:49.68\00:12:52.68 it was for 15 days... literally within 15 days 00:12:52.72\00:12:55.05 the average cholesterol dropping was about 00:12:55.09\00:12:57.39 15 to 25 points... we also saw that 00:12:57.42\00:13:01.10 within those people the average weight loss 00:13:01.14\00:13:03.99 was about 7 pounds... and so... 00:13:04.03\00:13:06.14 and that was just in 15 days... we did the blood work before 00:13:06.18\00:13:09.21 and the blood work afterwards and we were able to have 00:13:09.25\00:13:11.76 quantitative and qualitative results... 00:13:11.79\00:13:14.04 to show that this is actually legit... 00:13:14.08\00:13:15.77 and so I've seen with my own eyes... in just 15 days 00:13:15.81\00:13:18.32 what kind of results you can get by eating healthy... 00:13:18.36\00:13:20.84 and it really works... That is so great... 00:13:20.87\00:13:23.68 in my mind I'm thinking, I need to have you come here 00:13:23.71\00:13:26.33 and help... I don't have... praise the Lord 00:13:26.37\00:13:29.21 I don't have hypertension and all that stuff 00:13:29.24\00:13:32.04 and I'm thankful for all of that, 00:13:32.08\00:13:33.22 but when you want to do some things differently, 00:13:33.26\00:13:37.42 it's good to get some other input so I'm thinking to myself 00:13:37.46\00:13:41.01 "Hmmm... I need to have Pr. Chew's whole system here. " 00:13:41.04\00:13:44.13 There you go... there you go... But I love that idea 00:13:44.17\00:13:47.22 that people came away from what they do 00:13:47.26\00:13:51.64 what people don't realize Pr. Chew and I'm sure you 00:13:51.68\00:13:55.04 agree with this is that, 00:13:55.08\00:13:56.43 whatever it is... you're doing is what got you into 00:13:56.47\00:14:01.09 that health state in the first place... 00:14:01.12\00:14:03.48 Exactly... exactly... So you have to change 00:14:03.52\00:14:05.81 what you're doing... to get a different outcome... 00:14:05.85\00:14:08.82 That's it... and that's the science 00:14:08.85\00:14:10.94 it's pretty much how, and the thing is... 00:14:10.97\00:14:12.54 you have to inspire change... because you know 00:14:12.57\00:14:14.91 as people... we are ruts.. I mean... I should say 00:14:14.95\00:14:17.85 not really ruts but we live in a "rut mentality" 00:14:17.89\00:14:20.73 we eat this type of food, 00:14:20.76\00:14:22.45 we eat it almost 4 or 5 times a week 00:14:22.48\00:14:24.88 you know, and it was good... it was good... 00:14:24.92\00:14:26.79 it was easy... it was convenient... it's very easy 00:14:26.83\00:14:29.21 to go out to the fast food restaurant and get a burger 00:14:29.24\00:14:32.11 or get some French fries or some of these things... 00:14:32.14\00:14:35.20 but, you know, it takes a new desire to want to change 00:14:35.23\00:14:38.25 to eat more fruit, to eat more vegetables 00:14:38.29\00:14:40.42 and eat some more grains and things like that... 00:14:40.45\00:14:42.57 and so... it takes a desire and I believe 00:14:42.61\00:14:45.57 that it can only be inspired by the Holy Spirit 00:14:45.60\00:14:47.42 we have to pray... for change... 00:14:47.46\00:14:49.21 and I think the Lord is willing to work with us... 00:14:49.25\00:14:51.55 He says, "Beloved I wish above all things that thou mayest 00:14:51.58\00:14:54.81 prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. " 00:14:54.85\00:14:57.61 so, I believe this much... if we believe in the Lord 00:14:57.64\00:15:00.33 He can give us the strength and the help to change as well, 00:15:00.37\00:15:02.85 and that's the key... I believe. You know, in whole... 00:15:02.89\00:15:06.02 you are just really speaking the truth... 00:15:06.06\00:15:08.25 because I know when I used to practice 00:15:08.28\00:15:10.40 alternative medicine in Dallas, and I'd get people 00:15:10.44\00:15:13.38 that would come to me to find out how to get healthier 00:15:13.41\00:15:16.32 and I would put them on a healthier diet... 00:15:16.35\00:15:19.99 the resistance to change is so strong... 00:15:20.02\00:15:23.59 we have cultural things that... ways that we eat... 00:15:23.62\00:15:28.13 that has gotten us into this sickness in the first place, 00:15:28.16\00:15:31.06 and African Americans are the forerunners of disease 00:15:31.09\00:15:33.45 in this country... Yes... yes... 00:15:33.49\00:15:34.95 so... chronic disease... so we got to do something 00:15:34.98\00:15:37.60 different in order to be well. That's it... that's it... 00:15:37.63\00:15:41.01 what you are doing... is just tremendous... 00:15:41.04\00:15:43.44 so now, okay, so that's how you started... 00:15:43.48\00:15:45.81 now, what are you doing now, where are you now? 00:15:45.84\00:15:48.36 Right now, I'm actually... I am living in 00:15:48.40\00:15:50.38 Fayetteville, Arkansas, we have a church here 00:15:50.41\00:15:52.34 in Arkansas... right now actually 00:15:52.37\00:15:54.75 I'm not running a restaurant currently... 00:15:54.78\00:15:56.69 but we're running a... we have a factory... 00:15:56.73\00:15:58.57 a food factory believe it or not we have, pretty much, a factory 00:15:58.60\00:16:02.32 where we produce delicious food products... 00:16:02.35\00:16:05.04 we make... we have a product called 00:16:05.07\00:16:07.29 "Better than Meat" it looks like meat, 00:16:07.32\00:16:09.13 tastes like meat but is not meat... 00:16:09.16\00:16:10.90 and so we have different types that we actually produce 00:16:10.93\00:16:14.48 everything from mock chicken wings to meat balls to 00:16:14.51\00:16:18.03 we have something called "Fryless chicken" 00:16:18.07\00:16:20.12 we have a steak... you know... and so these products 00:16:20.16\00:16:23.25 have become a favorite of many in our community... 00:16:23.28\00:16:26.34 and I'm refining that again... our product... we always say... 00:16:26.37\00:16:29.69 it kind of has a texture and a taste and feel like real meat... 00:16:29.72\00:16:33.05 so it makes people who love to eat meat 00:16:33.09\00:16:35.38 it gives them a good transition to want to change... 00:16:35.42\00:16:38.12 and that's what we're finding... so we're producing 00:16:38.16\00:16:40.55 these healthy food products right now 00:16:40.58\00:16:42.25 we actually also are running a program called... 00:16:42.29\00:16:46.02 "Chew for Change" which is actually a community 00:16:46.06\00:16:48.97 initiative where we do a 60-day meal challenge 00:16:49.00\00:16:51.90 in the community... Okay... tell us about that... 00:16:51.94\00:16:54.77 Yeah... yeah... yeah... right now I have one gentleman 00:16:54.80\00:16:57.56 an African American young man, 29-years-old... 00:16:57.60\00:16:59.78 he is literally above 400 pounds and he just lost his father 00:16:59.82\00:17:04.58 pretty much to diabetes 00:17:04.62\00:17:07.18 and other health conditions 00:17:07.21\00:17:08.78 and so forth... but he is at a point in his life... 00:17:08.81\00:17:10.65 we had a talk with him, I think, two weeks ago... 00:17:10.68\00:17:13.47 he's at a point right now where he says, 00:17:13.51\00:17:15.26 "I want to make a real change" and so, we have people like him 00:17:15.29\00:17:18.29 who is going on the 60-day challenge hunt 00:17:18.32\00:17:20.96 we're feeding him all the meals for 60 days... 00:17:20.99\00:17:23.08 while they're on this program we're going to be 00:17:23.12\00:17:25.21 actually teaching them how to cook healthy... 00:17:25.25\00:17:27.27 so we're going to be doing cooking classes with them, 00:17:27.30\00:17:29.54 we're going to be giving them personal coaching... 00:17:29.57\00:17:31.77 and just encouraging them to go for walks 00:17:31.81\00:17:33.80 and do basic exercise... and the concept is that... 00:17:33.83\00:17:36.91 in 60 days... they're going to drop 600 points... 00:17:36.95\00:17:39.99 and the points is where... when they lose a pound 00:17:40.02\00:17:42.63 they get a point... when their cholesterol goes down 00:17:42.67\00:17:44.88 they get a point... when they walk a mile... 00:17:44.92\00:17:46.73 they get a point... when they drink water 00:17:46.76\00:17:48.50 they get a point... so, the goal is that as they 00:17:48.54\00:17:51.15 actually are living this lifestyle... 00:17:51.18\00:17:53.25 they are going to actually pick up habits 00:17:53.28\00:17:55.31 that can be for a lifetime... 00:17:55.35\00:17:56.64 and so it's really a complete program... 00:17:56.68\00:17:58.95 and the last thing I'll says is 00:17:58.98\00:18:00.28 it's really amazing because were able to get on 00:18:00.31\00:18:02.61 the Fox News Network... in our Community... 00:18:02.64\00:18:04.94 and I was able to get it into papers and articles 00:18:04.98\00:18:07.90 and newspaper and so, the Community is 00:18:07.94\00:18:10.51 embracing the project and I'm hoping that 00:18:10.54\00:18:13.05 it's going to be a really great witness, you know, 00:18:13.08\00:18:15.49 for those in our Community, showing them that we can 00:18:15.52\00:18:17.89 chew for change... That's... Oh man! that's so 00:18:17.93\00:18:21.00 exciting... that is so exciting because what you're saying is 00:18:21.03\00:18:25.69 you're giving people the tools that they need 00:18:25.73\00:18:28.93 to get well and to stay well... Exactly... 00:18:28.96\00:18:32.10 ...to stay well... you got it... you got it... exactly... 00:18:32.13\00:18:35.27 and they feel good about themselves because really... 00:18:35.31\00:18:38.41 when you're carrying all that weight... 00:18:38.45\00:18:40.23 you know, they had... I've seen it over and over again 00:18:40.26\00:18:43.66 you've seen people who put on those really fat suits... 00:18:43.70\00:18:47.07 and they put clothes over them 00:18:47.10\00:18:48.59 and they go out into the Community... 00:18:48.63\00:18:50.63 and it shows how people treat you... 00:18:50.66\00:18:52.60 when you're obese versus when you're not... 00:18:52.63\00:18:55.41 and invariably... everybody I've seen that has put on 00:18:55.45\00:19:01.37 that fat suit has ended up crying about how 00:19:01.40\00:19:04.66 they were treated... Exactly... 00:19:04.69\00:19:06.59 so, not only do you feel bad... but you feel badly about 00:19:06.63\00:19:10.80 the way you look and so... you just interact 00:19:10.83\00:19:13.80 that way... Exactly... 00:19:13.83\00:19:15.50 So, you're saying that you're giving people 00:19:15.53\00:19:18.38 with this 60-day challenge... the tools that they need 00:19:18.41\00:19:22.42 you're cooking for them, you're teaching them 00:19:22.45\00:19:24.65 how to keep this up themselves. Exactly... exactly... 00:19:24.68\00:19:28.38 That is so amazing... ... it's amazing because 00:19:28.42\00:19:30.76 the great thing about it is... we can really have 00:19:30.80\00:19:33.11 tangible impact on people's lives... 00:19:33.14\00:19:35.27 you know, it's not like I'm just saying... 00:19:35.30\00:19:37.15 you know, I do a lot of classes around the Country 00:19:37.18\00:19:39.27 we can go into a place and say, "You should just eat healthy. " 00:19:39.31\00:19:42.15 But when I go in there and say, 00:19:42.18\00:19:43.73 "Listen, I'm not only going to say to you... to eat health, 00:19:43.77\00:19:47.09 but I'm going to teach you how to make a change" 00:19:47.13\00:19:49.39 and I think that's the personal... 00:19:49.42\00:19:51.77 the personal contact that our Savior, Christ, 00:19:51.81\00:19:54.72 you know... He had personal contact 00:19:54.75\00:19:56.63 with people... and He had tangible results 00:19:56.66\00:19:58.79 because He worked with them... 00:19:58.83\00:20:00.07 and so this motto is really... is designed to have it 00:20:00.11\00:20:02.77 so we can have tangible impact on people's lives... 00:20:02.80\00:20:05.43 and so, it's really special... really special... 00:20:05.46\00:20:07.16 That is so great... so now, how can somebody like me 00:20:07.20\00:20:11.42 who is not in your Community... 00:20:11.45\00:20:13.01 take part in this 60-day challenge 00:20:13.04\00:20:15.31 let's say... a viewer who is watching this program right now 00:20:15.35\00:20:18.49 wants to change their lives... what can they do? 00:20:18.53\00:20:23.78 Well, you know, we always say that sometimes... 00:20:23.82\00:20:27.97 especially if you don't have all the resources... 00:20:28.01\00:20:30.23 in the sense that... you don't have all the education 00:20:30.26\00:20:32.23 we always like to say, "Take baby steps" 00:20:32.26\00:20:34.15 you know, you can start out... we always like to advocate 00:20:34.18\00:20:37.33 the meatless Monday concept or you take more than 2 days 00:20:37.37\00:20:39.92 out of the week... you say, "I'm going to go for a walk, 00:20:39.95\00:20:42.47 and I'm going to eat a plant-based meal this day. " 00:20:42.50\00:20:45.16 and so, I always say, "Take small steps... 00:20:45.20\00:20:48.69 and those small steps will become bigger steps, 00:20:48.73\00:20:51.17 and those bigger steps can then become a lifestyle... " 00:20:51.20\00:20:53.60 and so, we always say, 00:20:53.64\00:20:54.97 "A lot of times if you don't have all of the help 00:20:55.01\00:20:57.73 in your area, the key is... that you start out 00:20:57.77\00:21:00.09 with what you can... " if you do have that help 00:21:00.13\00:21:02.38 and you can find some people that can maybe help you 00:21:02.42\00:21:04.32 with eating healthy... go ahead and get them 00:21:04.35\00:21:06.19 to help you to maybe transitioning your lifestyle... 00:21:06.22\00:21:08.97 but the key is this... pray for a desire, number one, 00:21:09.00\00:21:11.71 and then as you pray for that desire, 00:21:11.75\00:21:13.56 God will then become your teacher... 00:21:13.60\00:21:15.38 He will teach us how to cook healthy... He says... 00:21:15.42\00:21:18.02 He wants us to prosper and be in health... 00:21:18.06\00:21:20.11 and so... if we pray... God is able to do 00:21:20.15\00:21:23.55 the impossible and so... 00:21:23.59\00:21:24.97 if you love to eat things that are fried... 00:21:25.01\00:21:26.70 and things that have a lot of fat... 00:21:26.73\00:21:28.28 God can help us to love to eat things that are 00:21:28.31\00:21:30.32 made with olive oil and sautéed rather than 00:21:30.35\00:21:32.73 having all of that cholesterol and all of that extra 00:21:32.77\00:21:34.86 added saturated fat... so it can be done in a way 00:21:34.89\00:21:37.66 that's healthy... but we have to pray 00:21:37.70\00:21:39.31 and ask the Holy Spirit to inspire us... 00:21:39.35\00:21:40.89 and I believe that God will answer that prayer every time... 00:21:40.93\00:21:43.68 Amen... yes He will... He will, "If any man wills to do His will 00:21:43.72\00:21:48.30 He will know of the teaching" right? 00:21:48.34\00:21:50.76 Amen... If you want to make it 00:21:50.80\00:21:53.04 to be different... if you want things to change 00:21:53.08\00:21:55.33 and you seek God first and ask Him, 00:21:55.37\00:21:57.58 "Lord, please... just help me to change... " 00:21:57.62\00:21:59.66 He will hear 00:21:59.69\00:22:01.47 and honor that prayer... 00:22:01.51\00:22:02.62 Most definitely... most definitely... 00:22:02.65\00:22:04.60 So, how did you get into Ministry... Pastor Chew... 00:22:04.64\00:22:07.87 how did you...? It was kind of interesting 00:22:07.90\00:22:10.81 my story kind of started believe it or not 00:22:10.84\00:22:13.71 I kind of like to go back and say... 00:22:13.75\00:22:15.27 kind of my history... I started about 12 years ago 00:22:15.30\00:22:18.05 as a young man... about 18 years old... 00:22:18.09\00:22:19.85 and I had a Track Scholarship to Howard University 00:22:19.89\00:22:23.03 and I ended up... believe it or not... 00:22:23.06\00:22:25.08 I ended up breaking my leg in the track race... 00:22:25.11\00:22:27.24 and it just turned my whole life around 00:22:27.28\00:22:29.94 and the Lord called me... to stand for Him... 00:22:29.98\00:22:32.64 and I mean... 00:22:32.68\00:22:33.99 I had some decisions to make at that time... 00:22:34.02\00:22:35.76 but I gave my heart to Christ 00:22:35.79\00:22:36.87 at that time... became baptized... 00:22:36.91\00:22:38.33 about a year-and-a-half later after that... 00:22:38.36\00:22:41.17 I ended up becoming... doing Colporteuring 00:22:41.21\00:22:43.95 and starting my own Bible work with a Ministry in Maryland... 00:22:43.98\00:22:47.28 while I was doing that... believe it or not... 00:22:47.31\00:22:49.36 we became very entrepreneurial and we actually began 00:22:49.40\00:22:52.00 to make granola... and began... learning how to bake bread... 00:22:52.04\00:22:54.56 and so, as I was canvassing and knocking on doors 00:22:54.59\00:22:57.45 selling books and giving Bible studies... 00:22:57.49\00:22:59.12 we were asking the customers 00:22:59.15\00:23:01.16 I mean... the people that we were working with 00:23:01.20\00:23:02.90 saying, "Hey, we have some great, delicious granola" 00:23:02.93\00:23:05.08 we said, we had "crunchy, brunchy granola... 00:23:05.12\00:23:06.97 we don't box... but we have a granola that will knock you out" 00:23:07.01\00:23:10.30 and so... we would actually, 00:23:10.34\00:23:11.87 you know, people that we would meet in the Community 00:23:11.90\00:23:14.34 we would actually sell them our bread and our granola, 00:23:14.37\00:23:16.77 and so, I began... at that point 00:23:16.81\00:23:19.13 kind of... doing Health Ministry 00:23:19.16\00:23:21.20 along with again doing Bible Work 00:23:21.24\00:23:23.21 teaching people the Word of God and I mean, all along the way, 00:23:23.24\00:23:26.76 I was kind of learning about Ministry and also Health 00:23:26.80\00:23:29.59 to make the long story short kind of fast forward... 00:23:29.62\00:23:32.53 I ended up moving to Arkansas, about 3 years ago, 00:23:32.57\00:23:35.44 and my wife was actually, 00:23:35.47\00:23:36.98 even though we were not married at that time... 00:23:37.02\00:23:38.44 but we ended up getting married... 00:23:38.47\00:23:40.64 about a month before I got married... 00:23:40.68\00:23:42.77 I got a call... to become a Pastor of the Church 00:23:42.81\00:23:45.75 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and they asked me 00:23:45.78\00:23:48.65 to come on and consult with Louisiana Conference 00:23:48.69\00:23:50.78 they called me... to become a Pastor... 00:23:50.81\00:23:52.65 and I've been pastoring for the last... almost 3 years now 00:23:52.69\00:23:55.53 and so... it was kind of a unique circumstance 00:23:55.57\00:23:59.16 but the Lord had His eye on it all along the way... 00:23:59.20\00:24:01.89 Look at how God just does... what He does... 00:24:01.92\00:24:06.09 now, you had this scholarship to Howard University... 00:24:06.13\00:24:10.23 for Track... but you ended up breaking your leg... 00:24:10.26\00:24:14.29 and so... God had this other path for you... all along... 00:24:14.33\00:24:18.21 this divine plan... right? Yeah, exactly... exactly... 00:24:18.25\00:24:22.10 so, you're thinking that your life 00:24:22.13\00:24:23.75 is just never going to be the same... 00:24:23.79\00:24:25.38 and it's just a mess now... 00:24:25.41\00:24:26.86 because I can't do the scholarship 00:24:26.89\00:24:28.53 and then God had you going into Colporteuring... 00:24:28.57\00:24:31.59 Colporteuring and building you up in the Faith... 00:24:31.63\00:24:34.62 Exactly... exactly... Now, at what point did 00:24:34.66\00:24:37.18 you meet your wife... before you moved to Arkansas, or 00:24:37.21\00:24:40.52 Believe it or not... we met, actually, 00:24:40.56\00:24:42.57 when we were about 20-years-old... 1920?.. 00:24:42.60\00:24:44.54 and we actually colporteured together... believe it or not... 00:24:44.58\00:24:48.50 and that was some 10 to 11 ago and so she and I became friends 00:24:48.53\00:24:52.42 we didn't have any interest at that time 00:24:52.46\00:24:54.93 but about 3 or 4 years ago... the Lord... 00:24:54.97\00:24:57.40 you know how the birds and bees 00:24:57.44\00:24:58.67 they just start working... and... you know... 00:24:58.71\00:25:00.72 you get a little excited and as a man... the Bible says, 00:25:00.76\00:25:03.47 "When he finds a good wife... he finds a good thing" 00:25:03.50\00:25:06.18 and so, I kind of had that desire with her 00:25:06.22\00:25:08.24 and the Lord led... and she's a really awesome partner... 00:25:08.28\00:25:12.21 I mean... in ministry with me... Yes, and I'm so excited because 00:25:12.25\00:25:15.90 you and your lovely wife, Tina, are going to do a program 00:25:15.94\00:25:18.90 for Dare to Dream for us... 00:25:18.94\00:25:20.44 Exactly... exactly... we're really excited... 00:25:20.48\00:25:23.32 so, we have to bring her on next time... 00:25:23.35\00:25:25.09 she couldn't be with us this time... 00:25:25.13\00:25:26.79 as she's out of town... but we're going to have to 00:25:26.83\00:25:28.53 bring her on next time to talk about 00:25:28.56\00:25:30.58 how you guys met... because she'll give us 00:25:30.61\00:25:33.02 the 411... she'll give us the girl's point, 00:25:33.06\00:25:35.42 There you go... exactly... ... on how you guys met 00:25:35.46\00:25:39.66 so, now, where do you see your Ministry going... 00:25:39.69\00:25:43.74 are you looking to establish restaurants 00:25:43.77\00:25:47.67 or you looking to do trainings... 00:25:47.70\00:25:49.56 where... where are you going with it? 00:25:49.59\00:25:51.40 You know, our motto is, to really work on that facet 00:25:51.44\00:25:54.40 but we do have a focus, our dream, I would say, 00:25:54.44\00:25:57.26 is to have a Production Factory that can actually be 00:25:57.30\00:26:02.21 as a source of employment 00:26:02.25\00:26:03.49 to those living in the inner cities 00:26:03.52\00:26:05.54 we find that... one of the greatest things 00:26:05.58\00:26:08.15 that we find is... especially in African American Communities 00:26:08.19\00:26:10.29 are no jobs... you know... there's not opportunity 00:26:10.32\00:26:13.12 for... especially... young African Americans 00:26:13.16\00:26:15.35 sometimes to have opportunities for employment 00:26:15.39\00:26:17.51 careers... and so... one of our dreams is actually 00:26:17.55\00:26:20.30 to set up a factory with our food products 00:26:20.33\00:26:23.07 our food products have been approved to sell in some 00:26:23.11\00:26:25.19 retail outlets like Whole foods Market 00:26:25.23\00:26:27.19 and other stores... so the Lord is really opening 00:26:27.23\00:26:29.58 great opportunities... and then secondly, 00:26:29.62\00:26:31.76 on top of that... our goal is to actually 00:26:31.79\00:26:33.86 with our factories to set up almost like a small 00:26:33.90\00:26:36.94 restaurant franchise... is our other secondary goal... 00:26:36.97\00:26:39.72 you know, with our food products and so... we hope 00:26:39.76\00:26:42.47 that we can have little small restaurants 00:26:42.51\00:26:44.09 all around the Country this is a long-term goal 00:26:44.12\00:26:46.78 but this is a dream... and that's what we're hoping 00:26:46.81\00:26:49.44 to see accomplished here in the next 10 to 15 years 00:26:49.47\00:26:52.06 is that God would open up a factory 00:26:52.10\00:26:53.76 and build small restaurants that we can actually 00:26:53.79\00:26:56.06 set up... and that can help people and change lives... 00:26:56.09\00:26:59.41 and that's our prayer... That sounds so tremendous, 00:26:59.45\00:27:02.74 what a blessing that would be. Yeah... yeah... 00:27:02.77\00:27:05.84 Thank you so much for being with us... 00:27:05.87\00:27:08.78 Do you have a parting thought 00:27:08.82\00:27:10.01 that you would like to give the viewers? 00:27:10.04\00:27:11.72 Well, definitely I would say that God is the One that 00:27:11.76\00:27:16.57 created us... you know the Bible says 00:27:16.60\00:27:18.01 that we were formed in His image... 00:27:18.05\00:27:19.58 and He formed us with His hands... 00:27:19.61\00:27:21.07 and the Bible says, "He breathed in man 00:27:21.11\00:27:23.15 the breath of life... " and I would always like to say, 00:27:23.19\00:27:25.86 when it comes to health, we were made from dust 00:27:25.89\00:27:28.01 we were made... from the breath of God 00:27:28.04\00:27:29.78 so that breath... that breath is what gives us... 00:27:29.81\00:27:32.81 it inspires us... to do what He wants us to do 00:27:32.85\00:27:35.81 He's the One that gives us the power, 00:27:35.85\00:27:37.90 the desire... the desire to change... 00:27:37.93\00:27:39.94 as long as, I would say, 00:27:39.98\00:27:41.41 that if you're struggling with health 00:27:41.44\00:27:43.34 you may have some illnesses, you may not see how 00:27:43.38\00:27:46.01 you can change those things... 00:27:46.04\00:27:47.29 just say a simple prayer... and watch God 00:27:47.33\00:27:50.23 bring the people in your path 00:27:50.26\00:27:51.92 to place information in your path 00:27:51.95\00:27:53.66 you know, and I know that God is able to do that 00:27:53.70\00:27:56.18 to do abundantly, exceedingly above what we can actually think 00:27:56.22\00:27:59.44 Thank you so much Pastor Chew, and thank you for tuning in... 00:27:59.48\00:28:02.41 Tune in next time... it just wouldn't be the same... 00:28:02.45\00:28:04.67 without you... 00:28:04.70\00:28:05.91
