Do you wonder why some kids do better in School than others, 00:00:01.20\00:00:04.40 what's missing for our kids? Well, stay tuned to meet the man 00:00:04.43\00:00:08.17 known as America's most trusted educator... 00:00:08.20\00:00:11.27 My name is Yvonne Lewis and you're watching Urban Report 00:00:11.31\00:00:14.88 Hello and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:36.97\00:00:39.20 My guest today is Dr. Steve Perry, known as, 00:00:39.23\00:00:42.44 America's most trusted educator, he's a CNN Education Contributor 00:00:42.47\00:00:47.71 host of "Save My Son" Reality Show 00:00:47.74\00:00:50.55 and Founder and Principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet 00:00:50.58\00:00:54.48 School in Hartford, Connecticut, and he's an author... 00:00:54.52\00:00:58.39 Welcome to Urban Report Dr. Perry... yeah... 00:00:58.42\00:01:01.86 Thank you so much... Oh, it's so great 00:01:01.89\00:01:04.09 to have you here... I've been wanting to have you 00:01:04.13\00:01:06.23 on the Program for so long and I'm just so thankful 00:01:06.26\00:01:09.33 that you're with us today... I'm honored to be here 00:01:09.36\00:01:12.40 and I'm glad to have the opportunity 00:01:12.43\00:01:14.27 to talk to your viewers because in so many ways, 00:01:14.30\00:01:18.17 the religious screening has been vital to education 00:01:18.21\00:01:22.01 and so, it's exciting to be able to have a conversation 00:01:22.04\00:01:25.51 with people for whom, too long you've been squeezed out 00:01:25.55\00:01:28.92 of the conversation on Education Well, thank you... thank you... 00:01:28.95\00:01:32.05 you know, I've watched you on CNN 00:01:32.09\00:01:36.42 I've watched you on "Save my Son", "Save our Sons" 00:01:36.46\00:01:40.33 and I am so impressed with what you're doing... 00:01:40.36\00:01:44.17 I want to know more about you 00:01:44.20\00:01:46.50 I know our viewers would love to know... 00:01:46.53\00:01:48.14 what's your journey been like... were you raised with money 00:01:48.17\00:01:52.74 what's been your... oh is it funny, 00:01:52.77\00:01:57.35 okay, so I think we're in for a good story here... 00:01:57.38\00:01:59.88 No... no I was not raised with money 00:01:59.91\00:02:03.39 no... not unless you consider 00:02:03.42\00:02:05.59 eating Government cheese with money... 00:02:05.62\00:02:07.72 eating reduced lunch with money and living in the Projects 00:02:07.76\00:02:11.99 until I was a Junior in College no... no... I was born on 00:02:12.03\00:02:15.06 my mother's 16th birthday, and, 00:02:15.10\00:02:18.43 my mother... like so many mothers 00:02:18.47\00:02:20.37 who were raising a son by herself... 00:02:20.40\00:02:22.24 her husband, my father, was for... some time 00:02:22.27\00:02:26.94 abusive and their relationship one way or another... crumbled 00:02:26.98\00:02:31.45 and she set off to do the best that she could to raise me 00:02:31.48\00:02:36.45 and she sought the support of educators and coaches 00:02:36.48\00:02:41.42 who believed that there was something in me 00:02:41.46\00:02:44.73 that would, one day, make an impact on other people's lives 00:02:44.76\00:02:48.76 from as far back as I can remember 00:02:48.80\00:02:51.23 there had been people who had been reaching down 00:02:51.27\00:02:53.64 to pull me out of the circumstances that I was in... 00:02:53.67\00:02:55.87 to put me in positions to be successful 00:02:55.90\00:02:58.04 and, I am, now, among the people 00:02:58.07\00:03:02.01 who are fighting very hard 00:03:02.04\00:03:03.21 to make sure all children get access to quality education 00:03:03.24\00:03:06.18 no matter who they were born to. And that's so important 00:03:06.21\00:03:10.22 Dr. Steve because... I hear you say a few things, 00:03:10.25\00:03:13.66 first of all... your mom, though she was young, 00:03:13.69\00:03:16.99 really worked hard to make sure that you had what you needed 00:03:17.03\00:03:22.30 and she was involved... and I think 00:03:22.33\00:03:24.60 parental involvement is so critical to the success 00:03:24.63\00:03:28.34 of our children... so that's another thing... 00:03:28.37\00:03:30.77 What would you say was the impact though 00:03:30.81\00:03:35.68 of the absence of your father? It was profound... 00:03:35.71\00:03:40.12 there were a lot of emotions that I dealt with... 00:03:40.15\00:03:44.55 all the way through adulthood... 00:03:44.59\00:03:47.82 trying to figure out how to do the simplest things 00:03:47.86\00:03:51.39 from learning how to shave, to some of the more complicated 00:03:51.43\00:03:54.50 things like heartbreak or dreaming out loud, 00:03:54.56\00:03:57.27 and trying to find a way to be both a young man 00:03:57.30\00:04:00.30 and to be a Black man who... wasn't a punk 00:04:00.34\00:04:05.94 but didn't want to be a thug either 00:04:05.97\00:04:08.08 so, not being in a position where I had access to my father 00:04:08.11\00:04:13.25 in a meaningful way... I found myself... 00:04:13.28\00:04:17.99 feeling my way through the dark. 00:04:18.02\00:04:19.25 Wow, that sounds like a great title for a book... 00:04:19.29\00:04:24.33 "Feeling my way through the dark," you know, 00:04:24.36\00:04:27.13 that's one of the things that we stress here 00:04:27.13\00:04:29.80 on Dare to Dream... the importance of the father 00:04:29.83\00:04:32.47 in the success of the family 00:04:32.50\00:04:35.70 and what we're finding, of course, as you know 00:04:35.74\00:04:39.67 the statistics show that the success of the family 00:04:39.71\00:04:43.65 is really, really hinged upon a lot upon the father, 00:04:43.68\00:04:47.65 more so than the mother, even though, you know, 00:04:47.68\00:04:50.49 the mothers have to step up to the plate and do both jobs 00:04:50.52\00:04:53.96 in many cases and so, one of the things 00:04:53.99\00:04:56.79 that I appreciate about what you do... 00:04:56.83\00:04:58.59 is you talk about the impact of fatherlessness... 00:04:58.63\00:05:02.30 and the man's role in the home, and that's such a critical piece 00:05:02.33\00:05:07.17 that I think we're missing so often, 00:05:07.20\00:05:09.60 would you tell us some more about growing up 00:05:09.64\00:05:13.11 as an adolescent... where were you academically 00:05:13.14\00:05:16.41 as an adolescent? I was average... I was average 00:05:16.44\00:05:20.18 at best... I was fortunate because I was in an 00:05:20.22\00:05:22.58 Upward Bound Program... Hmmm... 00:05:22.62\00:05:24.09 those are programs that work with students 00:05:24.12\00:05:25.79 from historically disadvantaged populations 00:05:25.82\00:05:27.39 and they have them going to school during the summer 00:05:27.42\00:05:31.36 and doing after-school support, I had an advisor 00:05:31.39\00:05:35.20 in our Upward Bound Program who would pick the courses 00:05:35.23\00:05:39.10 for me that I was in so I would have never taken 00:05:39.13\00:05:41.47 Physics in High School had she not made me... 00:05:41.50\00:05:43.84 Hmmm... ... Algebra 2... 00:05:43.87\00:05:45.37 I would have never taken... or Statistics... 00:05:45.41\00:05:47.34 I would not have taken those courses 00:05:47.38\00:05:48.44 because none of my friends took them... 00:05:48.48\00:05:49.84 so I was an average student at best 00:05:49.88\00:05:51.18 but a lot of my friends got into a lot of trouble... 00:05:51.21\00:05:53.31 and I didn't... it wasn't that I was morally 00:05:53.35\00:05:56.35 opposed to getting in trouble, I just wasn't interested in it, 00:05:56.38\00:05:59.42 I played sports and it seemed to be... 00:05:59.45\00:06:02.49 seemed to me to be more interesting to do those things 00:06:02.52\00:06:05.43 than to go off and do some of the other tomfoolery 00:06:05.46\00:06:07.76 that my friends were deeply embedded in... 00:06:07.76\00:06:09.70 I didn't want to sell drugs... again, I would go to the 00:06:09.73\00:06:14.14 store with my friends who would steal stuff 00:06:14.17\00:06:16.87 but I didn't steal... though I would eat what they took 00:06:16.91\00:06:19.31 Hmmm... hmmm... I wouldn't sell drugs 00:06:19.34\00:06:22.18 but if they went to... they took us to... 00:06:22.21\00:06:25.55 a restaurant... like to fast food 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.58 I would take the food 00:06:28.62\00:06:29.95 that they purchased with that... 00:06:29.98\00:06:31.35 and so, I was there... I was there... 00:06:31.39\00:06:34.39 I could not tell you that I was anywhere... but there 00:06:34.42\00:06:36.86 but, even after awhile, I stopped doing that 00:06:36.89\00:06:40.16 I just... it got old... I didn't see myself in prison 00:06:40.20\00:06:43.10 as the next step... I felt like that was what 00:06:43.13\00:06:46.13 folks were expecting of me... 00:06:46.17\00:06:47.40 Yes... yes... ... but I wanted to live 00:06:47.44\00:06:48.80 a typical existence... Yes... yes... so where was 00:06:48.84\00:06:52.34 the turnaround... A couple of turnarounds... 00:06:52.37\00:06:55.64 I had a... from my earliest entry in School 00:06:55.68\00:06:58.88 I was kicked out in Pre-K for fighting and doing bad things 00:06:58.91\00:07:03.55 and then I stayed back in the third grade and 00:07:03.59\00:07:06.25 my fourth grade teacher was the first person 00:07:06.29\00:07:08.89 to pull me aside and say, "You're going to be good. " 00:07:08.92\00:07:11.56 and then... there were multiple turning points... 00:07:11.59\00:07:13.76 I don't know that... any life well-lived 00:07:13.80\00:07:15.86 has one turning point... I hope I'm still turning... 00:07:15.90\00:07:18.47 But, you were on one path, and you ended up 00:07:18.50\00:07:24.67 on a totally different path... 00:07:24.71\00:07:27.28 Well, you know, I was on 00:07:27.31\00:07:29.44 parallel paths... I think that's the best way to say it... 00:07:29.48\00:07:31.55 my friends wanted to be great at what they were doing 00:07:31.58\00:07:34.22 and I wanted to be great too... 00:07:34.25\00:07:35.42 I just didn't want to be a great drug dealer... 00:07:35.45\00:07:37.52 they were not uncomfortable with feeding into stereotypes 00:07:37.55\00:07:42.59 and I was extremely uncomfortable 00:07:42.62\00:07:44.63 with feeding into stereotypes... and so, I would say 00:07:44.66\00:07:48.33 that I wanted to do things like 00:07:48.36\00:07:49.50 be the Mayor of my hometown... 00:07:49.53\00:07:50.63 because that seemed to me to be the most revolutionary 00:07:50.67\00:07:52.40 thing for a Black kid from the Projects to say 00:07:52.43\00:07:54.14 that he wanted to be the Mayor, at that point, 00:07:54.17\00:07:55.94 the Mayor seemed to be the highest office 00:07:55.97\00:07:57.67 anyone could hold in my little bitty life... 00:07:57.71\00:07:59.87 and what I began to see was that 00:07:59.91\00:08:02.81 my mother was on the Tenants Association 00:08:02.84\00:08:05.65 in our Project... and I began to see 00:08:05.68\00:08:08.18 that there were people who constantly seemed like 00:08:08.22\00:08:10.69 they were going to stop her and the other tenants... 00:08:10.72\00:08:13.12 residents of the Project from getting what I felt... 00:08:13.15\00:08:16.16 like they deserved... so, I was blessed or given the 00:08:16.19\00:08:19.16 opportunity to see... what justice was about... 00:08:19.19\00:08:22.80 and I knew that I had been given an opportunity 00:08:22.83\00:08:26.40 in part... because I was poor, 00:08:26.43\00:08:29.04 the TRIO Programs or the Upward Bound Programs 00:08:29.07\00:08:31.14 were those programs that were given to kids 00:08:31.17\00:08:32.44 who were poor... so they didn't really do 00:08:32.47\00:08:33.54 anything amazing... except for ending up being poor, 00:08:33.58\00:08:35.51 I remember when we first got called down... 00:08:35.54\00:08:37.58 to the auditorium... I remember that like it was 00:08:37.61\00:08:40.25 yesterday... when I was in 8th Grade... 00:08:40.28\00:08:41.78 and they said... they called all the names 00:08:41.82\00:08:43.49 of my friends and I and I thought... you know, 00:08:43.52\00:08:45.19 by the time we made it down from our Classes... 00:08:45.22\00:08:46.89 we were almost in a fight with one another 00:08:46.92\00:08:48.39 to figure out who told... 00:08:48.42\00:08:49.96 and so when we all assembled in the auditorium 00:08:52.19\00:08:56.06 I just remember thinking... "Man, we're in trouble... " 00:08:56.10\00:08:58.37 and, by the time this woman stood in front of us 00:08:58.40\00:09:02.10 this Black woman stood in front of us... 00:09:02.14\00:09:03.20 I thought, "Well, who is she... is she the police... 00:09:03.24\00:09:06.54 like is she a Detective or some Undercover?" 00:09:06.57\00:09:08.88 you know, because we had just done so much stupidness 00:09:08.91\00:09:11.18 and she said, "You all have the capacity to go to College... " 00:09:11.21\00:09:14.68 and we didn't even know what she meant... 00:09:14.72\00:09:16.58 I never met anyone who was going to College... 00:09:16.62\00:09:19.09 by the 8th Grade... except for School, 00:09:19.12\00:09:21.22 you know, except for... the teachers, 00:09:21.26\00:09:23.39 I didn't know anybody in my personal life 00:09:23.43\00:09:25.49 who had been to College... just seemed like 00:09:25.53\00:09:27.56 an absurd notion... she may as well said, 00:09:27.60\00:09:29.43 "You go to the moon. " and so she created this 00:09:29.46\00:09:32.33 opportunity that I had never heard of... 00:09:32.37\00:09:35.27 "Do the Upward Bound Program, my name is Angela Banks Rankins" 00:09:35.30\00:09:37.77 and it wasn't one day... it wasn't one turning point 00:09:37.81\00:09:41.08 it was multiple turning points and multiple times when she and 00:09:41.11\00:09:43.81 the Director of the Program, Peter Budget had to go 00:09:43.85\00:09:47.08 and really get us... and really go after us for just 00:09:47.12\00:09:50.39 being kids and doing stupid things... 00:09:50.42\00:09:52.32 so when I got the opportunity to make an impact 00:09:52.35\00:09:56.32 as an adult... I did it in a place... 00:09:56.36\00:09:58.89 that an impact was made on me 00:09:58.93\00:10:00.10 which was in Education... we started our own Upward Bound 00:10:00.13\00:10:02.06 Program which was called ConnCAP... here in Hartford 00:10:02.10\00:10:04.67 and it was just the most revolutionary thing 00:10:04.70\00:10:08.60 I could do... I felt like... 00:10:08.64\00:10:10.01 if you can give access to education 00:10:10.04\00:10:12.07 to the worst kids in the region 00:10:12.11\00:10:14.08 then you're really doing something... 00:10:14.11\00:10:15.71 and then that's how the School was born... 00:10:15.74\00:10:17.98 and that's how we keep doing... 00:10:18.01\00:10:19.65 everything we're doing... I just believe 00:10:19.68\00:10:21.28 that our kids are as beautiful, 00:10:21.32\00:10:23.18 and as brilliant as any others 00:10:23.22\00:10:25.19 who have ever been born, I believe God makes no mistakes 00:10:25.22\00:10:27.59 so every single child is done on purpose 00:10:27.62\00:10:30.59 for a purpose... Yes... absolutely... 00:10:30.63\00:10:32.93 I was going to ask you, how did you end up in Education 00:10:32.96\00:10:36.26 so I appreciate your letting us know that 00:10:36.30\00:10:38.13 because there are not a lot of males in Education... 00:10:38.17\00:10:41.50 and I that feel that there are not a lot of Black males 00:10:41.54\00:10:43.84 in the Educational field... so, it's interesting 00:10:43.87\00:10:47.08 that you felt that... that's how you could really make 00:10:47.11\00:10:50.51 a difference... that's how our children 00:10:50.55\00:10:52.75 could be really impacted 00:10:52.78\00:10:54.78 the most profoundly... I think, through Education 00:10:54.82\00:10:57.59 and that can change your outlook... 00:10:57.62\00:10:59.89 education can change your outlook... 00:10:59.92\00:11:02.22 so, are those some of the things 00:11:02.26\00:11:05.06 that kind of influenced you to go into Education? 00:11:05.09\00:11:08.86 I don't... I'll say this... and this is my understanding... 00:11:08.90\00:11:12.30 I believe that Education is a calling... 00:11:12.33\00:11:14.07 Hmmm... I believe it's something 00:11:14.10\00:11:16.54 before they were preachers... they were taught, 00:11:16.57\00:11:18.71 before they were principals... they were taught, 00:11:18.74\00:11:22.28 and physicians and detectives and mechanics... 00:11:22.31\00:11:25.81 everybody who is somebody was taught by somebody... 00:11:25.85\00:11:30.35 and the date is really clear that Education is the only 00:11:30.39\00:11:34.86 permanent escape route out of poverty 00:11:34.89\00:11:37.39 and it's, in fact, the surest road to happiness... 00:11:37.43\00:11:41.96 virtually everything that we value... 00:11:42.00\00:11:45.07 has its roots in a quality education... 00:11:45.10\00:11:48.14 even marriage itself... 00:11:48.17\00:11:49.27 the more education you have, the higher the probability 00:11:49.30\00:11:53.17 of being happy... in your marriage... 00:11:53.21\00:11:55.24 in your career... in everything that you do... 00:11:55.28\00:11:57.65 healthier... actually physically healthier... 00:11:57.68\00:12:00.28 so, I believe I was called to do Education... 00:12:00.32\00:12:02.65 this is what I do... 00:12:02.68\00:12:03.75 I'm not terribly great at a bunch of other things... 00:12:03.79\00:12:05.95 so, if this thing didn't work out, I think I'd be in trouble. 00:12:05.99\00:12:09.22 Well, it's obviously worked out because 00:12:09.26\00:12:12.53 at the School that you are the Founder of... 00:12:12.56\00:12:15.63 Capital Prep Magnet School 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.13 100 percent... I read... 00:12:18.17\00:12:20.57 of your graduates have gone on to College since 2006. 00:12:20.60\00:12:24.54 Absolutely... so, what's your secret... 00:12:24.57\00:12:26.64 tell us your secret... I have an amazing team... 00:12:26.68\00:12:29.38 I'm one of the Founders of Capital Prep... 00:12:29.41\00:12:31.71 I'm just the one that most people know... 00:12:31.75\00:12:34.02 and so, that team came together... this ragtag group 00:12:34.05\00:12:40.06 of women and men... decided that we were going 00:12:40.09\00:12:43.22 to leave these failed schools that we were working in 00:12:43.26\00:12:45.99 and we were going to create an academic experience 00:12:46.03\00:12:48.63 that had never been seen before, we believed that if we brought 00:12:48.66\00:12:52.93 the best educators that we could find... 00:12:52.97\00:12:55.60 into one place... we could take children 00:12:55.64\00:12:58.34 who other people thought... 00:12:58.37\00:13:00.58 maybe... even if they thought they were good 00:13:00.61\00:13:02.08 but they didn't know... how good... 00:13:02.11\00:13:03.71 we felt like we could get the best 00:13:03.75\00:13:05.28 out of every single child that we had access to. 00:13:05.31\00:13:07.22 That is tremendous... so, when you say, 00:13:07.25\00:13:11.02 "Create an academic experience that's unparalleled... " 00:13:11.05\00:13:14.96 What do you mean? like how... 00:13:14.99\00:13:16.79 give us like a sample of a student's day there... 00:13:16.83\00:13:22.13 What's different? So, it starts... 00:13:22.16\00:13:23.73 their day starts in July... we're a year-around school 00:13:23.77\00:13:27.17 Ah... So, Capital Prep students 00:13:27.20\00:13:29.97 go to School... 201 days... versus 187 or 183 00:13:30.01\00:13:33.17 like we do in other School Districts, 00:13:33.21\00:13:34.61 our children's days are typically longer... 00:13:34.64\00:13:36.71 the expectations are higher, we have a two-score requirement 00:13:36.75\00:13:39.88 for children... every child has an 00:13:39.91\00:13:42.45 academic advisor... that advisor is the person 00:13:42.48\00:13:44.92 who checks in... at home... every two weeks 00:13:44.95\00:13:47.36 the expectations are that the child will meet 00:13:47.39\00:13:49.79 with their advisor every single day... 00:13:49.82\00:13:51.23 we treat our children... as if they are our children... 00:13:51.26\00:13:54.50 the kids at Capital Prep don't get anything different 00:13:54.56\00:13:57.77 than my own sons... and that's due in large part 00:13:57.80\00:14:00.77 because my own sons attend Capital Prep... 00:14:00.80\00:14:03.17 I wouldn't serve the children of our Community 00:14:03.20\00:14:05.34 anything that I wouldn't serve my own children... 00:14:05.37\00:14:07.48 and that's the case for most of us 00:14:07.51\00:14:09.24 who have... children... most of my colleagues 00:14:09.28\00:14:11.68 who have children... send their children... 00:14:11.71\00:14:14.08 to Capital Prep... It sounds like 00:14:14.12\00:14:17.12 it's an amazing... amazing... School... 00:14:17.15\00:14:20.62 How would you explain the disparity... 00:14:20.66\00:14:23.59 the achievement disparity between 00:14:23.63\00:14:26.49 Black students and White students... 00:14:26.53\00:14:28.80 how would you explain that? 00:14:28.83\00:14:30.77 Most Black students go to some of the worst schools 00:14:30.80\00:14:33.54 in America... so that's the first reason why 00:14:33.57\00:14:36.40 it's just an "incidents thing" so, if White kids were going 00:14:36.44\00:14:40.24 to those schools... they would be doing worse 00:14:40.28\00:14:41.81 than other White kids... so start there... 00:14:41.84\00:14:43.31 and then, both within the schools that we are the majority 00:14:43.35\00:14:47.02 and in other schools where we are the minority, 00:14:47.05\00:14:49.92 racism is still very real... one of the reasons 00:14:49.95\00:14:52.75 why there is a Capital Prep is not so much because I was 00:14:52.79\00:14:55.29 compelled by what I was seeing in the Hood... 00:14:55.32\00:14:57.39 it was because of what I saw in the suburb... 00:14:57.43\00:14:59.29 a nearby suburb... Windsor, Connecticut... 00:14:59.33\00:15:01.13 where I was working in a school there... the high school 00:15:01.16\00:15:04.73 and I would see kids 00:15:04.77\00:15:06.37 that we had worked with all summer... 00:15:06.40\00:15:09.44 we have had them since Algebra 1 class 00:15:09.47\00:15:12.34 and then... I would go see the children at their school... 00:15:12.37\00:15:16.28 and at their school... they'd be in Extended Algebra 00:15:16.31\00:15:19.71 and I didn't understand why I didn't even know 00:15:19.75\00:15:21.35 what Extended Algebra was, and so, it was a three-semester 00:15:21.38\00:15:24.59 Algebra Class as opposed to two-semester Algebra Class 00:15:24.62\00:15:27.62 and what I found was, I could walk through most of the 00:15:27.66\00:15:30.63 schools that were "integrated" and find 00:15:30.66\00:15:33.80 that the darker the child the lower they were 00:15:33.83\00:15:35.76 in the school's assignment of classes... 00:15:35.80\00:15:38.73 and I didn't think that was right... 00:15:38.77\00:15:41.64 so, I felt like, there was nothing wrong with those kids 00:15:41.67\00:15:45.44 they're just in the wrong setting... 00:15:45.47\00:15:46.71 the other part of this is, we as a Community... 00:15:46.74\00:15:49.14 we the Black and Latino Community need to have a 00:15:49.18\00:15:51.51 greater commitment to education and what that means, to me, 00:15:51.55\00:15:55.85 is the same amount of money we spend on sports 00:15:55.88\00:15:58.05 and entertainment... should be spent on 00:15:58.09\00:15:59.92 academic experiences... 00:15:59.95\00:16:01.56 we need to push harder 00:16:01.59\00:16:03.02 politically... many parents are committed to a quality education 00:16:03.06\00:16:06.33 they just don't think they have any options 00:16:06.36\00:16:07.83 so if you live in a poor community... 00:16:07.86\00:16:09.03 and you apply to a Charter or Magnet School 00:16:09.06\00:16:13.37 and you don't get in... you feel like... that's it... 00:16:13.40\00:16:15.14 "Oh, well... " and that's not the case 00:16:15.17\00:16:17.27 you can and must fight for greater school choice 00:16:17.31\00:16:20.41 and vouchers... let's say that your church 00:16:20.44\00:16:22.41 has a school... you should be fighting for 00:16:22.44\00:16:24.21 vouchers so that your church school could 00:16:24.25\00:16:25.95 take the money that is being spent on failed local schools 00:16:25.98\00:16:29.62 and spend it on successful nearby schools... 00:16:29.65\00:16:32.69 even if that school is religious 00:16:32.72\00:16:33.72 we don't have a problem with spending money on 00:16:33.76\00:16:35.72 religious schools and their colleges... 00:16:35.76\00:16:36.93 Notre Dame, the last time I checked, is run by a Father, 00:16:36.96\00:16:39.66 Clearly, we don't have a problem with spending 00:16:39.69\00:16:43.60 money on schools like BYU... or Georgetown or Boston College 00:16:43.63\00:16:49.34 all of which are religious schools... 00:16:49.37\00:16:51.04 we have to have our families 00:16:51.07\00:16:54.81 especially minority families fight hard for school choice 00:16:54.84\00:16:59.05 so it's both the personal... 00:16:59.08\00:17:01.28 that our parents could do a lot better at... 00:17:01.32\00:17:04.02 and the political... we have to go and fight 00:17:04.05\00:17:06.69 to make sure that our children are not damned to failed schools 00:17:06.72\00:17:09.79 That is so important, and again, parental involvement 00:17:09.82\00:17:14.20 is critical... so often, parents are 00:17:14.23\00:17:18.33 overwhelmed by just life... and they're not as involved 00:17:18.37\00:17:23.04 in their children's academic life... 00:17:23.07\00:17:25.41 as they should be... 00:17:25.44\00:17:26.57 or maybe they feel incompetent, you know, 00:17:26.61\00:17:29.11 unable to do that 00:17:29.14\00:17:30.91 or maybe they're embarrassed by their own lack of education 00:17:30.95\00:17:33.78 but what you're saying is that... regardless of that 00:17:33.82\00:17:37.82 get involved with your children, with their academics 00:17:37.85\00:17:41.86 with their schools... and make better choices... 00:17:41.89\00:17:44.56 academically... read to your kids... 00:17:44.59\00:17:46.43 if you can't really read well, you can take them to the library 00:17:46.46\00:17:49.50 where they have story hour, but get them involved 00:17:49.53\00:17:52.77 in learning... and the appreciation of learning 00:17:52.80\00:17:55.97 versus... all this money 00:17:56.00\00:17:58.21 that we spend... and we tend spend on entertainment 00:17:58.24\00:18:00.61 I think... that is so... so important... 00:18:00.64\00:18:03.21 that is so important... 00:18:03.24\00:18:04.81 What role do you see spirituality as having 00:18:04.85\00:18:09.48 in the academic arena... 00:18:09.52\00:18:12.79 You know... I think that there is something 00:18:12.82\00:18:15.32 to be said for a child's understanding 00:18:15.36\00:18:17.83 of a bigger power... 00:18:17.86\00:18:19.19 one of these that we do in our 00:18:19.23\00:18:20.86 school... even though we are a public school... 00:18:20.90\00:18:22.53 is we provide space for children 00:18:22.56\00:18:24.03 to express their religious responsibilities... 00:18:24.07\00:18:26.90 Hmmm... So, we have 00:18:26.94\00:18:28.84 for our Muslim students 00:18:28.87\00:18:30.71 they are the ones who use it the most... 00:18:30.74\00:18:32.74 we have a space... where they go to pray... 00:18:32.77\00:18:34.54 one parent... who's Christian 00:18:34.58\00:18:37.85 who found that to be reprehensible 00:18:37.88\00:18:39.58 asked if they could give out Bibles in the School 00:18:39.61\00:18:42.62 and I said, "Well, they are not giving out the Qur'an 00:18:42.65\00:18:44.92 but you could... if you felt so compelled... 00:18:44.95\00:18:49.09 you could create an opportunity where you created a Club 00:18:49.12\00:18:51.63 for your group... here on campus... 00:18:51.66\00:18:54.36 and that would be welcomed. " We understand that 00:18:54.36\00:18:57.20 when we educate the whole child, we have to respect 00:18:57.23\00:19:00.94 what it is... that makes that family... a family 00:19:00.97\00:19:04.61 and for many families that is religion... 00:19:04.64\00:19:06.44 and so, we respect that... 00:19:06.47\00:19:08.94 That's great... what about nutrition... 00:19:08.98\00:19:12.21 the importance of nutrition so many children... 00:19:12.25\00:19:17.45 one in five children... it says... 00:19:17.49\00:19:19.39 come to school... hungry... what do you think 00:19:19.42\00:19:23.32 is the role of nutrition in just academic achievement? 00:19:23.36\00:19:26.59 So, nutrition is important... but... to be honest with you 00:19:26.63\00:19:29.76 it's often overplayed 00:19:29.80\00:19:31.30 as an impediment to a child's performance... 00:19:31.33\00:19:33.84 Hmmm... the fact is... 00:19:33.87\00:19:35.07 if you have children in your life, 00:19:35.10\00:19:36.60 you know they're hungry all day... 00:19:36.64\00:19:38.11 They are hungry all day... 00:19:38.14\00:19:41.14 That's all they do is eat... they graze... and so 00:19:41.18\00:19:46.01 especially if you have a boy... 00:19:46.05\00:19:47.38 you feel like... you should just leave 00:19:47.42\00:19:49.08 your refrigerator door open... why even close it... 00:19:49.12\00:19:52.49 so, at our school... we have breakfast... 00:19:52.52\00:19:56.42 we have snack... we have lunch... we have snack, 00:19:56.46\00:19:58.63 and in the not so distant future 00:19:58.66\00:20:00.66 we will also have dinner, so we understand 00:20:00.70\00:20:03.03 that we have that as an obligation 00:20:03.06\00:20:04.90 and then on the weekends we have a backpack program... 00:20:04.93\00:20:07.87 where children receive a full backpack of food 00:20:07.90\00:20:10.54 on Friday... and they return it on Monday... 00:20:10.57\00:20:13.48 so we get it... but I don't want to overstate 00:20:13.51\00:20:16.31 even as you say... if the statistics 00:20:16.34\00:20:18.08 that you've just stated... 00:20:18.11\00:20:19.21 if we accept those as true, there's still 80 percent 00:20:19.25\00:20:21.62 of children... not coming to school... 00:20:21.65\00:20:22.92 Hmmm... hungry... which means... 00:20:22.95\00:20:24.95 that there are other reasons why... 00:20:24.99\00:20:26.59 the children are not doing well 00:20:26.62\00:20:28.16 and the most important of those is that they don't have enough 00:20:28.19\00:20:30.73 effective teachers... in front of them... 00:20:30.76\00:20:32.39 Hmmm... so, then, what you're saying is 00:20:32.43\00:20:36.70 the main impediment then is not so much... nutrition 00:20:36.73\00:20:41.90 it's the teachers that are not really... competent... 00:20:41.94\00:20:46.84 Is that what you're saying? 00:20:46.88\00:20:48.08 It is what I'm saying... and their Administration. 00:20:48.11\00:20:52.45 So, how can that be remedied, because you have so many 00:20:52.48\00:20:56.32 teachers that are in the inner-city... 00:20:56.35\00:20:58.52 that just kind of say, "You know what... 00:20:58.55\00:21:00.69 these kids are unteachable... they don't want to learn 00:21:00.72\00:21:03.69 and I don't care anymore... " they are burned-out 00:21:03.73\00:21:06.06 so what would you suggest... how can we raise 00:21:06.09\00:21:08.83 the competency level of the teachers 00:21:08.86\00:21:11.27 in the inner city... There's a lot that we can do, 00:21:11.30\00:21:13.74 one of the first things that we can do 00:21:13.77\00:21:14.94 is push back the impact that Unions have... 00:21:14.97\00:21:16.60 on the operation of schools... they are the ones 00:21:16.64\00:21:19.44 who are most responsible for fighting to keep teachers in 00:21:19.47\00:21:21.98 even if those teachers are ineffective... 00:21:22.01\00:21:24.05 so that's the first thing that we can do... 00:21:24.08\00:21:25.91 the second thing that we can do... is we can... 00:21:25.95\00:21:27.78 create more alternate routes to certification programs 00:21:27.82\00:21:30.85 meaning that there are people who want to be 00:21:30.89\00:21:32.75 mid-career exchangers... who want to come and teach, 00:21:32.79\00:21:36.02 but they don't want to go back and get a whole 00:21:36.06\00:21:37.73 other 4-year degree, 00:21:37.76\00:21:38.79 it makes no sense for a person whose been working 00:21:38.83\00:21:40.73 in the theater for 20 years to have to go back and get 00:21:40.76\00:21:45.30 another Bachelor's in Education, that's absurd... 00:21:45.33\00:21:48.07 when they want to teach theater... 00:21:48.10\00:21:49.70 or somebody who has been a physician... 00:21:49.74\00:21:51.74 we have a physician... this is a true story... 00:21:51.77\00:21:53.44 there's a woman who's a physician... 00:21:53.48\00:21:54.54 she's actually... a surgeon... 00:21:54.58\00:21:55.64 who wants to teach Science here at Capital Prep... 00:21:55.68\00:21:58.11 but we cannot... because we're a public school 00:21:58.15\00:22:00.48 she cannot teach Science here at Capital Prep... 00:22:00.52\00:22:02.82 because she's not a certified teacher... 00:22:02.85\00:22:04.55 though she was Chief Resident when she was in Residency 00:22:04.59\00:22:09.29 and one of the top surgeons in the area... 00:22:09.32\00:22:11.43 but we can't hire her to teach Science... 00:22:11.46\00:22:13.56 so, we have to change some of the laws 00:22:13.60\00:22:15.63 that make it impossible for talented teachers 00:22:15.66\00:22:19.00 to come into the fold and then we have to both 00:22:19.03\00:22:22.37 support the teachers that we have 00:22:22.40\00:22:24.41 and get rid of the ones who we have 00:22:24.44\00:22:26.41 who are not... very good... 00:22:26.44\00:22:27.58 Hmmm... that's an important thing too 00:22:27.61\00:22:31.38 I think that one of the things that you find 00:22:31.41\00:22:34.92 is that people... get into the field 00:22:34.95\00:22:38.89 for different reasons and as you said before... 00:22:38.92\00:22:42.22 it's a calling... I do believe that 00:22:42.26\00:22:44.83 as well... it's a calling... because you have to have... 00:22:44.86\00:22:47.23 It's trained to teach... it's a misnomer that someone 00:22:47.30\00:22:52.33 can teach you how to teach... Hmmm... 00:22:52.37\00:22:54.34 A person who's a teacher is a teacher regardless 00:22:54.37\00:22:56.91 of what they do... you have a preacher who is a 00:22:56.94\00:22:59.01 fantastic teacher... then what you get is... 00:22:59.04\00:23:01.01 you get a person who wants you to understand the Bible... 00:23:01.04\00:23:04.48 you have a person who wants you to understand 00:23:04.51\00:23:06.58 what their purpose is... if you have a great teacher 00:23:06.61\00:23:10.79 who is a person who works at a Bank... 00:23:10.82\00:23:13.09 they want you to understand the policies and principles 00:23:13.12\00:23:15.26 that you have to impart in that place... 00:23:15.29\00:23:17.16 the same is true of a teacher... 00:23:17.19\00:23:18.89 a great teacher... we all know who they are 00:23:18.93\00:23:21.60 you go into the classroom and they are steadfast 00:23:21.63\00:23:23.97 they are just burning up to make sure that you get it... 00:23:24.00\00:23:26.43 Yes... I believe it's a gift as well... 00:23:26.47\00:23:29.90 and when you teach across the board... 00:23:29.94\00:23:32.74 you know... like you said... you're not necessarily a teacher 00:23:32.77\00:23:36.48 you're always teaching... teachers are always teaching... 00:23:36.51\00:23:40.18 They don't have a choice... Yeah, yeah, yeah... 00:23:40.22\00:23:43.25 A good teacher... is like a great singer... 00:23:43.28\00:23:45.19 meaning that... a person who can just sing... 00:23:45.22\00:23:48.26 you just go anywhere... you see them at home... 00:23:48.29\00:23:50.96 when they're washing the dishes singing... 00:23:50.99\00:23:52.23 and they're, you know, taking a shower singing, 00:23:52.26\00:23:54.13 and singing in the car even when there's no music 00:23:54.20\00:23:56.00 going on... it's just what they do... 00:23:56.03\00:23:57.40 Yeah...
