Arne Duncan, some of the News, 00:01:32.32\00:01:35.32 folks that were there looking for ways to get everyone 00:01:35.36\00:01:42.73 connected with education and Arne Duncan 00:01:42.76\00:01:46.37 seems to have done a good job with the Common Core Standards 00:01:46.40\00:01:49.94 which is going to be good for students... and I said 00:01:49.97\00:01:53.91 I needed to get a little closer to him 00:01:53.94\00:01:55.91 to find out what we could do 00:01:55.94\00:01:58.58 because I have some ideas and I've worked with 00:01:58.61\00:02:01.48 a lot of students... so I really just wanted to get 00:02:01.52\00:02:05.45 closer to get more upfront as far as what's going on... 00:02:05.49\00:02:09.42 Tell us a little bit about your experience in educating children 00:02:09.46\00:02:13.46 Well, I was the Director of an After-School Program 00:02:13.50\00:02:19.33 for 18 years... pretty much... and I work with all types 00:02:19.37\00:02:24.27 of students... students in the areas of 00:02:24.31\00:02:26.78 Math and Reading... and I had 00:02:26.81\00:02:30.45 phenomenal results with those students... 00:02:30.48\00:02:32.88 but it was mainly because of the parents... 00:02:32.91\00:02:36.12 So I've decided to go back to School to get a 00:02:36.15\00:02:38.45 Masters in Education I had, formerly, a background in 00:02:38.49\00:02:42.12 Math and Engineering and I just thought that maybe if 00:02:42.16\00:02:45.49 I got credentialed in education that I could fit into the 00:02:45.53\00:02:48.20 Public Schools and do a little bit better... 00:02:48.23\00:02:51.40 I mean... give them some ideas but that... 00:02:51.43\00:02:54.50 sometimes is a little more difficult to do than said... 00:02:54.54\00:02:58.21 Yes... and so... 00:02:58.24\00:02:59.44 I just decided that... you know, we'll work on some things... 00:02:59.47\00:03:05.35 one of my partners that I work with in the Business 00:03:05.38\00:03:09.38 decided to take that part on and I decided to do some more 00:03:09.42\00:03:13.82 research as far as education was concerned 00:03:13.86\00:03:16.62 to see how we could reach more families... for the most part... 00:03:16.66\00:03:20.66 Tell us what's going on... what's going on 00:03:21.00\00:03:24.93 in the families now as far as education is concerned 00:03:24.97\00:03:28.24 especially in the inner city... What's happening 00:03:28.27\00:03:31.51 with the children in the inner city 00:03:31.54\00:03:33.58 as far as education is concerned? 00:03:33.61\00:03:35.58 Well, one of the main problems with the inner city is that 00:03:35.61\00:03:41.92 for the most part... a lot of the parents are not 00:03:41.95\00:03:45.89 they did not have good K through 12 experiences 00:03:45.92\00:03:49.76 in School and so they're not familiar as far as what to do 00:03:49.79\00:03:52.79 with the students... with their own kids 00:03:52.83\00:03:55.60 and then... for the most part... now I think 00:03:55.63\00:03:58.40 the biggest problem is there are too many programs 00:03:58.43\00:04:00.97 there are so many programs that we're taking the parents 00:04:01.00\00:04:03.77 out of the picture and they are dropping their kids off 00:04:03.81\00:04:06.54 but when the kids go back home, the parents really don't know 00:04:06.57\00:04:10.18 what they are supposed to do... so I think that we've had 00:04:10.21\00:04:13.98 the best results because we're actually working 00:04:14.02\00:04:19.55 with the parents... So, I think now, 00:04:19.59\00:04:22.49 what needs to happen with the Schools is that... 00:04:22.52\00:04:24.86 we've got to pull those parents back in... 00:04:24.89\00:04:28.00 back into the picture... Mabel, that is such a 00:04:28.03\00:04:31.17 critical piece... and I think that 00:04:31.20\00:04:33.37 that is one of the main pieces that's missing in terms of our 00:04:33.40\00:04:37.81 children's achievements... you hit the nail on the head 00:04:37.84\00:04:41.48 some of the parents themselves might not have done too well 00:04:41.51\00:04:45.51 in School... or might have not had a good experience in School 00:04:45.55\00:04:49.48 and so... they can't really assist... 00:04:49.52\00:04:52.39 or they don't feel competent enough to assist... 00:04:52.42\00:04:55.86 or many times... they're overwhelmed themselves 00:04:55.89\00:04:59.13 with life and so they're not actively engaged 00:04:59.16\00:05:02.30 in the children's lives. I notice that... on your website 00:05:02.33\00:05:07.54 you said something about 00:05:07.57\00:05:08.94 "The Road to College beings in Pre-School" 00:05:08.97\00:05:12.27 tell us about that... because that's a very 00:05:12.31\00:05:15.88 important point too... and I think that the 00:05:15.91\00:05:18.78 parental-involvement piece is critical 00:05:18.81\00:05:21.75 tell us about that... Well, looking at it... 00:05:21.78\00:05:26.59 I actually have... my daughters have graduated 00:05:26.62\00:05:30.06 from College for the most part, I have one that's still in now 00:05:30.09\00:05:33.83 and my nephews... and then a lot of students 00:05:33.86\00:05:35.80 that I've worked with... and I've worked with 00:05:35.83\00:05:37.77 over the course of years... and you see those students 00:05:37.80\00:05:41.67 and you see what has happened with them 00:05:41.70\00:05:43.54 and it doesn't just start when they go to school 00:05:43.57\00:05:46.88 a lot of the interactions that they have with people 00:05:46.91\00:05:50.31 in the environment, people in the families... 00:05:50.35\00:05:53.21 and they're just getting... starting to build futures 00:05:53.25\00:05:58.05 for themselves... it begins when you're young 00:05:58.09\00:06:00.46 you know... the exposure... so a lot of times 00:06:00.49\00:06:02.46 people think that, "Oh you can... when you get 00:06:02.49\00:06:04.39 to be a Senior... you can figure out what you like 00:06:04.43\00:06:06.56 to do... " Well, no, you can't... 00:06:06.59\00:06:08.33 you can't wait that long... so... we look at... 00:06:08.36\00:06:11.30 when kids are in pre-school that we work with students 00:06:11.33\00:06:15.17 starting at 3 years old... and so... 00:06:15.20\00:06:17.27 when you get the students that young... 00:06:17.31\00:06:19.27 they actually.. love learning... they have... 00:06:19.31\00:06:22.41 it's a part of who they are... and then... 00:06:22.44\00:06:25.51 we help with the parents... I think that parents 00:06:25.55\00:06:27.52 who have them... in the household 00:06:27.55\00:06:29.88 they can take them out to, you know, the parks, the museums 00:06:29.92\00:06:33.22 vacations... they become more of a part of it 00:06:33.25\00:06:37.46 and each year... there's something 00:06:37.49\00:06:39.63 that the child has to, you know, they have to do... 00:06:39.66\00:06:42.30 every day is a learning experience 00:06:42.33\00:06:44.17 in the life of a child... well, actually, in anyone's life 00:06:44.20\00:06:47.64 you know, we learn every day... That's a... 00:06:47.67\00:06:51.84 You know... we have a little delay here... 00:06:51.87\00:06:55.98 so I don't want to talk over you... 00:06:56.01\00:06:57.78 finish your sentence... and then... 00:06:57.81\00:06:59.41 I'll ask another question... 00:06:59.45\00:07:00.62 OK, no, but, you know, I think that when we look at it 00:07:00.65\00:07:05.02 as far as... students go along the way... 00:07:05.05\00:07:07.56 parents think that, you know, you just send them to school 00:07:07.59\00:07:11.13 and that's the only place where they're learning 00:07:11.16\00:07:13.63 but since we have changed... learning now takes place 00:07:13.66\00:07:17.30 24 hours... 7 days a week... so it seems as though there is 00:07:17.33\00:07:21.74 more learning that goes on outside of the classroom 00:07:21.77\00:07:24.57 than inside... so... that's why... 00:07:24.61\00:07:27.58 everyday is important in the life of a child... 00:07:27.61\00:07:30.88 That is so... so... good... because... another thing... 00:07:30.91\00:07:34.92 you know... again.. the parental involvement piece 00:07:34.95\00:07:38.25 is critical... I think... a lot of times... 00:07:38.29\00:07:40.32 parents just drop the children off at School 00:07:40.36\00:07:42.89 and think that the teacher is going to be 00:07:42.92\00:07:45.39 responsible for all of the education 00:07:45.43\00:07:48.66 of the student... and what you're telling us today 00:07:48.70\00:07:52.30 is that... the parent... when that child comes out 00:07:52.33\00:07:55.47 of school... the parents should be more engaged 00:07:55.50\00:07:58.37 in the learning process and there are various 00:07:58.41\00:08:01.24 other things that a parent can do... 00:08:01.28\00:08:03.98 to enhance the learning process with that child... 00:08:04.15\00:08:08.35 such as... take the child to museums... 00:08:08.38\00:08:10.65 or to the Library... where they have, you know, 00:08:10.69\00:08:13.79 free story hour... it doesn't have to cost money 00:08:13.82\00:08:16.46 a lot of times... parents don't have money... 00:08:16.49\00:08:19.06 to do various things... but there are a lot of things 00:08:19.09\00:08:22.46 that you can do for free... do those things and 00:08:22.50\00:08:25.57 get engaged with the student more... 00:08:25.60\00:08:28.70 What other things can parents do to 00:08:28.74\00:08:31.77 to kind of foster learning within the home... 00:08:31.81\00:08:35.01 Well, a lot of times, parents can just, you know, 00:08:35.34\00:08:40.75 as far as their Community Centers in the neighborhood 00:08:40.78\00:08:43.55 Churches... a lot of Churches have programs and they need to 00:08:43.59\00:08:48.79 get their kids around any type of structured program 00:08:48.82\00:08:52.79 and as far as I'm concerned... I think, even, you mentioned, 00:08:52.83\00:08:56.93 National Action Network... that was another reason 00:08:56.97\00:08:59.80 I went was because Churches were represented there 00:08:59.83\00:09:03.91 and I think... that if we... you know... we're re-directing 00:09:03.94\00:09:07.64 our resources... in too many different areas. 00:09:07.68\00:09:10.68 If the Churches would really focus on socialization 00:09:10.71\00:09:15.12 and those types of social interactions 00:09:15.15\00:09:17.55 that would be a plus for them... 00:09:17.59\00:09:20.29 and they'll leave the academics to other areas... 00:09:20.32\00:09:25.06 because I think right now there are too many places 00:09:25.09\00:09:27.66 to take the kids... and even for the parents... 00:09:27.73\00:09:30.23 they don't know where to take them... 00:09:30.27\00:09:31.37 But if they can go to a Church or a Community Center 00:09:31.40\00:09:34.84 and then the kids can learn how to be team players 00:09:34.87\00:09:37.11 learn how to interact with other people 00:09:37.14\00:09:39.37 learn about different cultures, that will be good... 00:09:39.41\00:09:41.98 and then... if they would... 00:09:42.01\00:09:43.78 parents could actually connect more with the teachers 00:09:43.81\00:09:48.85 You know... I think that's something that we 00:09:48.88\00:09:50.92 really missed out on... is connecting with the teacher 00:09:50.95\00:09:53.62 because the teacher sees the child, 00:09:53.66\00:09:55.06 the parents see the child... if they connect together 00:09:55.09\00:09:58.33 they can find out what that child needs 00:09:58.36\00:10:01.43 and then the parent can use the Library or use other resources 00:10:01.46\00:10:05.93 you know... to help them... So that's what we do more... 00:10:05.97\00:10:11.54 Right... that parental-teacher connection is also critical 00:10:11.57\00:10:17.15 going to the different meetings for the students 00:10:17.18\00:10:21.42 like the PTA meetings... and the Parent-Teacher Conferences 00:10:21.45\00:10:24.99 you know... I know that sometimes parents... 00:10:25.02\00:10:28.29 they happen in the evening... and sometimes parents are tired 00:10:28.32\00:10:31.96 or whatever... but it's so important to 00:10:31.99\00:10:34.23 find out who is teaching your children 00:10:34.30\00:10:37.80 what kind of an environment is it... 00:10:37.83\00:10:41.07 and also... how you can work together 00:10:41.10\00:10:44.27 for the good of that child... to enhance their educational 00:10:44.31\00:10:47.98 experience... so... I think that parent-teacher 00:10:48.01\00:10:51.41 connection... is critical... What role do you think that 00:10:51.45\00:10:55.15 technology plays in educating our children? 00:10:55.18\00:10:58.42 Oh my! I say now that technology is the new intruder 00:10:58.45\00:11:04.03 in the home... you know... the Bible says 00:11:04.06\00:11:06.33 that a thief comes to steal, kill and destroy... 00:11:06.36\00:11:09.40 and I think that's exactly what the Internet is doing 00:11:09.43\00:11:13.30 and computers are doing because children... when they come home 00:11:13.34\00:11:16.77 they have the video games that they're playing 00:11:16.81\00:11:19.77 they're on the Internet... on Facebook... MySpace... 00:11:19.81\00:11:23.31 all of these types of things that really rob them 00:11:23.35\00:11:26.82 of doing productive things on the Internet 00:11:26.85\00:11:29.65 and a lot of parents have lost track of them.. by doing this... 00:11:29.68\00:11:34.89 Yeah... you know... we tend to think that technology is always 00:11:34.92\00:11:40.06 such a big help... but in many ways... 00:11:40.10\00:11:42.43 it can detract from the whole learning experience 00:11:42.46\00:11:47.07 if... you... and even the social experience 00:11:47.30\00:11:49.70 you know.. instead of conversing kids are texting and... 00:11:49.74\00:11:53.38 so... it is very, very important to utilize 00:11:53.41\00:11:59.21 technology in a way that enhances the educational 00:11:59.25\00:12:02.38 experience not detracts from it. Tell us some more about that... 00:12:02.42\00:12:06.42 if you would... OK... and you're right to 00:12:06.45\00:12:09.92 say that because... everywhere you go... 00:12:09.96\00:12:13.33 it's acceptable to use technology but I think... 00:12:13.36\00:12:17.63 unless we re-direct the students... 00:12:17.67\00:12:21.34 that we're actually pushing them into doing the wrong thing. 00:12:21.37\00:12:24.97 So... I do think that technology 00:12:25.01\00:12:28.78 can be used effectively in education.. for the most part... 00:12:28.81\00:12:33.25 I have started to use some computer software packages 00:12:33.28\00:12:37.85 with students... however, it's with extended practice 00:12:37.89\00:12:42.39 but I have worked with them to know exactly what they need 00:12:42.42\00:12:45.89 so that's the part that's missing... 00:12:45.93\00:12:48.00 you can't just sit a student in front of a computer 00:12:48.03\00:12:50.73 and expect them to know what to do... 00:12:50.77\00:12:53.10 They need to be directed... and then... 00:12:53.13\00:12:55.30 there needs to be some accountability 00:12:55.34\00:12:57.74 and if that accountability isn't there... 00:12:57.77\00:13:00.14 there's nothing... Absolutely... that's a critical 00:13:00.18\00:13:04.21 piece too... you need to know 00:13:04.25\00:13:05.81 what your child is doing... you even need to know 00:13:05.85\00:13:09.65 who their friends are... on some of these social networks 00:13:09.68\00:13:12.42 because there are predators that are on there... sometimes 00:13:12.45\00:13:15.19 so parents still have to play a very active role... 00:13:15.22\00:13:19.16 and I think... this is a critical piece... 00:13:19.19\00:13:21.43 the parental responsibility here... 00:13:21.46\00:13:23.77 the educational experience for the child 00:13:23.80\00:13:28.47 depends upon... and I'm summarizing what you're 00:13:28.50\00:13:32.11 saying... depends upon the 00:13:32.14\00:13:34.08 parent's involvement... the parent-teacher connection 00:13:34.11\00:13:39.35 and also... channeling technology properly... 00:13:39.38\00:13:44.12 utilizing technology properly... what effect do video games 00:13:44.15\00:13:48.29 have on a child's learning? Oh my! tremendous... 00:13:48.32\00:13:52.69 and I think the studies state that, you know, 00:13:52.73\00:13:57.03 that there's not a lot of impact... 00:13:57.07\00:14:01.07 but I think there is... because when you're sitting 00:14:01.10\00:14:04.11 and you're looking at the computer screen 00:14:04.14\00:14:06.84 you're working on a video game or, you know, just playing 00:14:06.88\00:14:10.68 you're basically in a passive mode... you know 00:14:10.71\00:14:14.35 all the work is being done in front of the screen... 00:14:14.38\00:14:17.65 you're just pushing buttons and that's not actual life... 00:14:17.69\00:14:20.89 you know... you don't think through 00:14:20.92\00:14:22.92 situations and they do sometimes on these games 00:14:22.96\00:14:25.46 to go from one level to another, but these students can spend 00:14:25.49\00:14:29.80 hours and hours on something that's fun 00:14:29.83\00:14:32.90 and something that they don't really have to think about 00:14:32.93\00:14:35.54 and so... when it comes time for them to sit down to actually 00:14:35.57\00:14:38.77 read a book or even read a paragraph... 00:14:38.81\00:14:42.78 they can't do it... they can't focus enough 00:14:42.81\00:14:45.61 because they don't know how to how to sit down and 00:14:45.65\00:14:49.42 form that mental picture... so I've seen students change 00:14:49.45\00:14:54.12 over the past seven years... it's amazing... even with the 00:14:54.16\00:14:58.23 young kids... how they change... because 00:14:58.26\00:14:59.86 they're not able to read, black and white words 00:14:59.89\00:15:02.43 and turn them into a colorful picture... 00:15:02.46\00:15:04.47 to answer a question you know... 00:15:04.50\00:15:06.90 So the video games then interfere with critical thinking 00:15:06.94\00:15:11.21 Yes... they do... 00:15:11.24\00:15:12.44 So, you have difficulty with critical thinking and also focus 00:15:12.47\00:15:19.08 because things are happening really quickly with the 00:15:19.11\00:15:22.25 video games and so, you know, you're playing with it 00:15:22.28\00:15:25.42 but focus.. for extended periods of time... 00:15:25.45\00:15:29.52 is a difficult thing on concepts... versus... just... 00:15:29.56\00:15:34.50 it's easy to play video games 00:15:34.56\00:15:36.46 for hours... we're not talking about that kind of focus... 00:15:36.50\00:15:38.67 we're talking about focus on concepts... 00:15:38.70\00:15:41.97 and being able to conceptualize and read and do 00:15:42.00\00:15:45.51 critical thinking... is that correct? 00:15:45.54\00:15:47.18 Yes... I mean... you know when I look at it... 00:15:47.21\00:15:50.58 students think that they only need to come to school 00:15:50.61\00:15:53.28 to learn what they want that it's... like it's selective 00:15:53.31\00:15:56.48 and that's because of, you know, them playing these games 00:15:56.52\00:15:59.65 and doing all these things that are fun... 00:15:59.69\00:16:01.76 that's not life... life is... you're going to 00:16:01.79\00:16:03.86 come up against things that you don't know... 00:16:03.89\00:16:05.86 or things that you're not familiar with... 00:16:05.89\00:16:07.76 and you have to apply the skills that you learn in school 00:16:07.83\00:16:11.33 to those things... and so... a lot of times... 00:16:11.37\00:16:14.97 they get very frustrated... now on... 00:16:15.00\00:16:17.27 and so many kids, you know, 00:16:17.31\00:16:19.51 they have short fuses... 00:16:19.54\00:16:21.68 and that's because, you know, with the games and... 00:16:21.71\00:16:23.85 it's fun... but when it's not fun and you have to 00:16:23.88\00:16:27.72 really think... they really aren't used to that... 00:16:27.75\00:16:31.52 so... and I'm seeing it so much more now 00:16:31.55\00:16:34.39 with the younger students and that's not good 00:16:34.42\00:16:36.96 it's not good. OK so... 00:16:36.99\00:16:40.03 I am a parent and I have a little 3-year-old 00:16:40.06\00:16:43.37 and I bring my 3-year-old to your program 00:16:43.40\00:16:46.53 what are you going to teach my 3-year-old 00:16:46.57\00:16:49.60 in your program... why should I bring my child to you? 00:16:49.64\00:16:52.57 Well, the first thing that we do especially with a 3-year-old 00:16:52.61\00:16:57.51 is to look at... now I use the 00:16:57.55\00:17:01.45 National Common Core Standards, that starts in Pre-School 00:17:01.48\00:17:04.75 so I look at that and I tell the parents 00:17:04.79\00:17:07.76 how they can look at these standards 00:17:07.79\00:17:10.66 no matter where they are... because a lot of times 00:17:10.69\00:17:13.29 parents transfer from, you know, State to State 00:17:13.33\00:17:15.86 and things like that, 00:17:15.90\00:17:16.93 so I start with the parent and I tell them that 00:17:16.97\00:17:19.20 "You're going to need to work with them everyday" 00:17:19.23\00:17:21.47 for the most part students come to us 00:17:21.50\00:17:23.51 maybe... or we might see them once or twice a week 00:17:23.54\00:17:27.21 and those other days... we try to tell the parents 00:17:27.24\00:17:30.88 what they need to do... so we will work 00:17:30.91\00:17:32.61 with the students and say a 3-year-old really needs to 00:17:32.65\00:17:37.89 work on counting, trying to obtain a dominant hand 00:17:37.92\00:17:43.09 whether left hand or right hand 00:17:43.12\00:17:44.73 you know, reading... understanding that there are 00:17:44.76\00:17:48.76 sounds associated with letters and vowels 00:17:48.80\00:17:51.67 those types of things and children now 00:17:51.70\00:17:54.97 learn a lot quicker than kids in the past 00:17:55.00\00:17:58.24 if they're directed the right way 00:17:58.27\00:18:00.48 so we give them as much as they can handle 00:18:00.51\00:18:04.35 so it's even sitting down for those few minutes a day 00:18:04.38\00:18:07.92 and then you start to move into larger periods of time 00:18:07.95\00:18:12.29 but... that is important for the parent to see what they 00:18:12.32\00:18:16.59 can work... with them... and then we tell them too 00:18:16.62\00:18:18.69 activities that are going on... you know... in the area 00:18:18.73\00:18:21.86 to expose their children to. 00:18:21.90\00:18:24.37 Oh, that's great... so some of the core skills, 00:18:24.40\00:18:27.30 and you have a standard against which you're working 00:18:27.34\00:18:32.97 the National Core... 00:18:33.01\00:18:35.14 what was that... that you called it? 00:18:35.18\00:18:37.45 It's the National Common Core Standards 00:18:37.48\00:18:39.71 and actually a lot of schools right now 00:18:39.75\00:18:42.45 it was adapted in June 2010 and under Secretary Arne Duncan 00:18:42.48\00:18:47.26 and that is a standard that's going to be 00:18:47.29\00:18:50.46 used all over the United States, it used to be that every State 00:18:50.49\00:18:54.40 had their own Standard 00:18:54.46\00:18:55.66 and that's where we were running into problems 00:18:55.70\00:18:58.30 with "No Child Left Behind" but now that we have a 00:18:58.33\00:19:00.90 National Common Core Standard, that Standard is the same 00:19:00.94\00:19:05.91 across all States and so whether a parent 00:19:05.94\00:19:08.84 or a student is in Florida, 00:19:08.88\00:19:11.98 or Illinois or Ohio 00:19:12.01\00:19:14.25 the Standard is the same... and so I think that's 00:19:14.28\00:19:16.95 phenomenal because that gives parents... a way in... 00:19:16.99\00:19:20.82 you know... that gives parents that connection 00:19:20.86\00:19:23.39 instead of saying, "I don't know if my child is 00:19:23.43\00:19:25.89 working on what they need to do" they can look... and see that... 00:19:25.93\00:19:29.56 That's great... that is a big, big help... 00:19:29.60\00:19:32.97 and again... this is a way in which technology can be used 00:19:33.00\00:19:36.87 positively because a parent can go on-line and find out 00:19:36.91\00:19:40.78 where... they can look at where their child is 00:19:40.81\00:19:45.38 and then... have a standard against which to measure 00:19:45.41\00:19:48.55 you know... their child's development 00:19:48.58\00:19:51.39 so that's really, really important. 00:19:51.42\00:19:54.19 Who else has impact on the child academically? 00:19:54.22\00:19:59.49 We have the parent, the teachers 00:19:59.53\00:20:01.86 who else can impact that child? The Community and any relative 00:20:01.90\00:20:07.74 adult... and I just say responsible adults 00:20:07.77\00:20:11.67 basically... I've been doing some studies 00:20:11.71\00:20:15.58 and looking at the time... the time that the student is in 00:20:15.61\00:20:19.61 a school... whether it's Pre-School or Elementary School 00:20:19.65\00:20:23.25 or High School compared to the time that they are at home 00:20:23.28\00:20:27.59 and when you look at summers, vacations... a student spends 00:20:27.62\00:20:31.66 approximately 71% of their time at home or in the Community 00:20:31.69\00:20:35.66 as opposed to School which is 29% 00:20:35.70\00:20:38.43 so, when you look at that, their neighbors, their friends, 00:20:38.47\00:20:45.11 relatives like I said that come over, friends, 00:20:45.14\00:20:48.51 they have a definite impact on the students 00:20:48.54\00:20:51.88 and so... it's important to really look at that 00:20:51.91\00:20:54.85 because a lot of times students come to School 00:20:54.88\00:20:57.75 they are using improper language they are singing songs 00:20:57.79\00:21:01.92 that they shouldn't sing... and that comes from home. 00:21:01.96\00:21:06.06 That comes from being out in the Community. 00:21:06.09\00:21:09.00 So, we need everyone... everyone involved... 00:21:09.03\00:21:11.97 and that's why we have a saying now 00:21:12.00\00:21:14.34 that "The world is our Classroom now" 00:21:14.37\00:21:16.67 it's basically flipped... the world is our Classroom 00:21:16.71\00:21:19.57 because everyone's running outside... so you can... 00:21:19.61\00:21:22.48 wherever you are... in the grocery store 00:21:22.51\00:21:24.31 there's a child that is looking 00:21:24.35\00:21:26.28 how are you going handle the situation when someone 00:21:26.31\00:21:28.62 gives you incorrect change... you know, there's someone that's 00:21:28.65\00:21:32.69 looking at you when you're driving down the street 00:21:32.72\00:21:34.66 and a car pulls in front of you, so... all of these things 00:21:34.69\00:21:38.26 really have an impact on students... 00:21:38.29\00:21:40.90 That is very true... children look and see what we do 00:21:40.93\00:21:45.70 and they model themselves after what we do... 00:21:45.73\00:21:48.87 so... that 71... 29... that's a very interesting percent 00:21:48.90\00:21:56.31 those are interesting percentages 00:21:56.34\00:21:57.61 71 percent of the child's learning takes place outside 00:21:57.65\00:22:02.42 of the School... that's a very interesting thing. 00:22:02.45\00:22:06.35 What effect did "No Child Left Behind" 00:22:06.39\00:22:10.09 have on students academically? 00:22:10.13\00:22:13.63 I think... when they came out 00:22:13.66\00:22:17.07 with "No Child Left Behind" basically it gave carte blanche 00:22:17.10\00:22:21.30 to anyone that thought they could help students 00:22:21.34\00:22:25.37 but not necessarily... I think that I saw so many 00:22:25.41\00:22:29.44 programs created but there was no accountability 00:22:29.48\00:22:33.21 for those programs... and, you know, when you really 00:22:33.25\00:22:36.75 look at it... teachers are having 00:22:36.79\00:22:40.39 a difficult time trying to introduce concepts 00:22:40.42\00:22:43.39 and get those concepts into students... 00:22:43.43\00:22:45.53 so, every program that opens up they're not experienced enough 00:22:45.56\00:22:50.27 to actually help these students and I'm not saying... 00:22:50.30\00:22:53.74 all programs because there are a lot of 00:22:53.77\00:22:55.44 phenomenal programs... out there 00:22:55.47\00:22:57.07 however, when you start seeing all of these programs 00:22:57.11\00:22:59.67 everyone is looking at the dollars and they are not 00:22:59.71\00:23:02.44 looking at "Are you truly impacting these students?" 00:23:02.48\00:23:05.18 and, I think, that that opened the door to 00:23:05.21\00:23:08.55 a lot of variability in education 00:23:08.58\00:23:12.72 and a lot of students really felt the effects 00:23:12.75\00:23:16.22 they really did... 00:23:16.26\00:23:17.36 That is a very sad thing... so how does a parent know 00:23:17.39\00:23:21.26 when you take your child to a program 00:23:21.30\00:23:23.47 how does that parent know that this is a reputable program 00:23:23.50\00:23:26.80 that's going to do... what it claims it's going to do? 00:23:26.84\00:23:30.11 Well, you know, I think... one thing that I looked at 00:23:30.14\00:23:35.24 is that... a lot of parents look at 00:23:35.28\00:23:37.58 "Well, this is a program that I can to put my child in 00:23:37.61\00:23:41.22 they're going to keep them for two hours 00:23:41.25\00:23:43.28 they are out of my hair for two hours" 00:23:43.32\00:23:45.32 and that's it... and so, you know 00:23:45.35\00:23:48.29 they started giving them snacks, they do all of these things 00:23:48.32\00:23:51.89 except for look at what they're doing 00:23:51.93\00:23:54.86 and a lot of times the programs are just helping 00:23:54.93\00:23:57.97 with homework... and that's good but you're 00:23:58.00\00:24:00.70 still not getting to the core problem 00:24:00.74\00:24:02.50 if they need help with homework a lot of times 00:24:02.54\00:24:05.77 it goes back deeper than that particular concept 00:24:05.81\00:24:09.18 and so... that's the part that I see is a problem 00:24:09.21\00:24:12.51 it's OK to help a child with homework 00:24:12.55\00:24:14.08 but if you're trying to help a child with fractions 00:24:14.12\00:24:17.69 and they don't know how to add or subtract 00:24:17.72\00:24:19.79 you're going to have a hard... you know... difficult time 00:24:19.82\00:24:22.39 working with them... Absolutely... 00:24:22.42\00:24:24.93 So I think parents need to have an idea 00:24:24.96\00:24:27.86 of keeping, you know, the communication lines 00:24:27.93\00:24:31.50 with the teacher... they need to know 00:24:31.53\00:24:33.37 at the end of the school year, you know, 00:24:33.40\00:24:35.30 we try to connect parents that way... 00:24:35.34\00:24:37.14 and talk to the teacher to see what concepts they can work with 00:24:37.17\00:24:40.71 their child over the summer on, so that they get prepared 00:24:40.74\00:24:44.08 for the next school year... 00:24:44.11\00:24:45.35 You know... that's a very interesting point too... 00:24:45.38\00:24:48.08 What happens over the summer... you know... 00:24:48.12\00:24:52.39 kids get out of school in May or June... and then... 00:24:52.42\00:24:56.49 they go back in August or September... 00:24:56.52\00:24:59.89 what should happen over the summer... 00:24:59.93\00:25:03.20 and tell us a little bit about summer vacation... 00:25:03.23\00:25:05.57 OK... what should happen over the summer 00:25:05.60\00:25:08.30 and the program we franchise that we're affiliated with 00:25:08.34\00:25:11.87 was year-round, because learning takes place 00:25:11.91\00:25:14.58 year round... and I always tell the students, 00:25:14.61\00:25:16.88 "Well, what if your... the pilot of the plane 00:25:16.91\00:25:19.78 you are flying in... decides to take a vacation 00:25:19.81\00:25:22.58 you know... his brain takes a vacation mid-stream 00:25:22.62\00:25:26.79 when you're taking off... so when you look at that... 00:25:26.82\00:25:30.56 it's just a matter of the learning isn't... 00:25:30.59\00:25:32.83 you don't learn because the school bell rings or... 00:25:32.86\00:25:35.63 you know... it rings for you to come in or to end 00:25:35.66\00:25:38.43 so it's important for students to see that 00:25:38.47\00:25:40.90 you have to learn all the time 00:25:40.94\00:25:44.44 learning is all the time 00:25:44.47\00:25:45.71 so... for parents... if your child struggled with 00:25:45.74\00:25:48.68 some concepts during the school year... 00:25:48.71\00:25:50.58 summer is a phenomenal time to really work with your child 00:25:50.61\00:25:53.95 to make sure... in a structured manner that they're going to 00:25:53.98\00:25:57.25 to take care of those areas... because if not... 00:25:57.29\00:26:01.76 then they're going to go to school... 00:26:01.79\00:26:03.02 and the average child, you know, they say... loses some of the 00:26:03.06\00:26:06.63 information that they learned over the year 00:26:06.66\00:26:10.03 and so... with the child who is really struggling 00:26:10.07\00:26:14.04 they're going to lose a lot... and then you go to 00:26:14.07\00:26:18.01 the next grade and you're expected to know 00:26:18.04\00:26:20.91 those concepts and you won't... 00:26:20.94\00:26:23.08 So... it's up to parents... a lot of parents get workbooks 00:26:23.11\00:26:27.35 over the summer... but the key is 00:26:27.38\00:26:29.48 making sure that you're consistent... 00:26:29.52\00:26:31.52 you know, I think a lot of times I work with some parents 00:26:31.55\00:26:36.12 and that's what we're trying to do 00:26:36.16\00:26:37.39 is to get the parents to see that... 00:26:37.43\00:26:38.63 you sometimes need an outside person to say 00:26:38.66\00:26:41.53 this has to get done... just for accountability 00:26:41.56\00:26:44.47 because students and parents sometimes... that's not a 00:26:44.50\00:26:47.57 good match... I know... I have kids so... 00:26:47.60\00:26:51.04 but, you know, to say, "I have to work over the summer" 00:26:51.07\00:26:55.78 "Yes, you do... " So... just to limit it 00:26:55.81\00:26:58.18 to make sure that it's something comfortable 00:26:58.21\00:27:00.52 and even if it's reinforcing some of those skills 00:27:00.55\00:27:02.88 that's something you need to do 00:27:02.92\00:27:04.89 so, I think, parents need to take that into consideration 00:27:04.92\00:27:08.86 and also with vacations... and take them places... 00:27:08.89\00:27:11.86 and not just go to have... you can have fun but 00:27:11.89\00:27:14.73 visit some of the museums there, visit some of the key points 00:27:14.76\00:27:21.04 of the city, you know, learn a little bit of history 00:27:21.07\00:27:23.91 about it... because that will help. 00:27:23.94\00:27:25.54 Wow...
