I mean, it was very, very 00:06:08.84\00:06:10.79 impulsive... it was like... as soon as you heard something, 00:06:10.83\00:06:13.33 it was like, "Oh, okay... " and I started moving around... 00:06:13.37\00:06:15.81 so I discovered at a very young age that 00:06:15.85\00:06:17.87 that I knew how to dance... Okay... 00:06:17.91\00:06:20.03 yeah, that was just something that I loved to do... 00:06:20.07\00:06:22.17 it was like... any time music would play... 00:06:22.20\00:06:24.03 and later on... I discovered that there are some people 00:06:24.07\00:06:27.99 who move to music... 00:06:28.03\00:06:29.54 and there are other people, who the music moves... 00:06:29.57\00:06:31.91 Hmmm... and the people who the 00:06:31.95\00:06:33.74 music moves... always made the best dancers 00:06:33.78\00:06:35.79 Okay, so explain that... explain that a little bit... 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.58 There are some people when they listen to music... 00:06:38.61\00:06:41.33 they are trying to process it in their mind, 00:06:41.37\00:06:46.24 and to keep their bodies and their motions coordinated 00:06:46.27\00:06:49.55 to the music so they can move at a certain pace and so on 00:06:49.59\00:06:52.38 I see... I see... there's a lot of this effort 00:06:52.42\00:06:54.29 that's being put out... and then there are other people 00:06:54.33\00:06:56.45 that when the music plays... it's moving you... 00:06:56.48\00:06:58.56 so it's almost like your body is naturally flowing with the music 00:06:58.59\00:07:01.86 Okay... those always made 00:07:01.89\00:07:03.36 the better caliber of dancers... Okay... okay... 00:07:03.39\00:07:05.13 yeah, and we discovered that later on 00:07:05.17\00:07:07.09 because the music was always moving me... 00:07:07.12\00:07:08.48 it was just moving me... 00:07:08.52\00:07:09.94 So, you went into dancing, I assume... 00:07:09.98\00:07:12.39 Oh yeah, definitely, definitely, it got to a point where 00:07:12.42\00:07:15.47 it first started just... being in my home and when we 00:07:15.51\00:07:18.01 were playing music in my backyard during a barbeque 00:07:18.04\00:07:20.51 then... Dwayne was "the entertainment" 00:07:20.54\00:07:23.18 Okay... so, you know, and I loved 00:07:23.21\00:07:24.53 getting attention... because I just didn't get 00:07:24.56\00:07:26.86 as much as I needed... from my parents... 00:07:26.90\00:07:29.50 Hmmm... hmmm... so there was still 00:07:29.53\00:07:30.80 somewhat of a love gap... so, for me, the love gap was 00:07:30.83\00:07:34.14 bridged... by me dancing... 00:07:34.18\00:07:36.36 and then receiving what I interpreted as love... 00:07:36.39\00:07:38.57 Okay... which was attention... 00:07:38.61\00:07:39.75 Okay, so, when did you take that into the professional realm? 00:07:39.78\00:07:43.47 what happened with that... there was a series of events 00:07:43.51\00:07:46.13 that took place with that... I went to High School, 00:07:46.16\00:07:48.26 and when I went to High School, I was pretty much a nobody... 00:07:48.29\00:07:50.96 no one recognized me for anything... 00:07:51.00\00:07:52.81 but, I knew how to dance... so I ended up participating 00:07:52.84\00:07:56.34 in the "Homecoming King - homecoming Queen Pageant" 00:07:56.38\00:07:59.79 Okay... Yeah, the talent shows... 00:07:59.82\00:08:01.42 so when I did that... I ended up winning... 00:08:01.45\00:08:04.59 and I danced... 00:08:04.63\00:08:06.44 Because the talent that you were displaying... 00:08:06.48\00:08:08.22 everybody had to do their talent and yours was dancing... 00:08:08.26\00:08:10.02 exactly... exactly... and you would win... 00:08:10.06\00:08:11.37 Yep... Okay... 00:08:11.41\00:08:12.45 and through the votes and everything... 00:08:12.49\00:08:13.53 they chose me as the Homecoming King for that year 00:08:13.57\00:08:15.80 1989... okay... okay... 00:08:15.84\00:08:17.33 so, when I became the Homecoming King... 00:08:17.36\00:08:19.31 I got a lot of attention... I mean... a lot of attention... 00:08:19.35\00:08:23.11 and then, there was a series of events, 00:08:23.15\00:08:25.74 kind of fast forwarding, 00:08:25.78\00:08:26.86 there was a series of events in High School that took place 00:08:26.90\00:08:30.02 where some guys came and they started dancing at the school, 00:08:30.06\00:08:32.62 and I really didn't appreciate the fact that 00:08:32.66\00:08:35.07 the crowd... the auditorium... was showing all these guys 00:08:35.10\00:08:37.88 the love that I felt belonged to me... 00:08:37.91\00:08:39.17 Right... right... right... right 00:08:39.21\00:08:40.38 so, therefore, I got jealous about that... 00:08:40.42\00:08:42.72 so I went up on stage and I wanted to battle with them 00:08:42.75\00:08:44.79 by dancing... Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... 00:08:44.83\00:08:46.14 and the teachers thought 00:08:46.18\00:08:47.31 that a fight was getting ready to start up... 00:08:47.34\00:08:48.78 so the teachers broke it up 00:08:48.81\00:08:50.17 they said, "No, no, no, let's stop this" 00:08:50.20\00:08:52.28 and then we were left off the stage 00:08:52.32\00:08:53.94 and a fight broke out as a result of that... 00:08:53.97\00:08:58.25 somebody thought that one of these guys wanted to 00:08:58.28\00:09:00.39 start trouble with me so they want and started 00:09:00.43\00:09:02.50 to jump on the guys and beat them up 00:09:02.53\00:09:03.77 Hmmm... and it was terrible... 00:09:03.81\00:09:05.38 come to find out that the guys that they beat up 00:09:05.41\00:09:08.53 at the School... were part of a group in Brooklyn, New York, 00:09:08.56\00:09:11.65 called "The Decepticons" there was a cartoon 00:09:11.69\00:09:13.52 that used to be called "The Transformers" 00:09:13.55\00:09:15.16 and they had the Autobots and Decepticons 00:09:15.19\00:09:16.77 the Decepticons were the bad guys... 00:09:16.80\00:09:18.35 to make the long story short, they were the bad guys... 00:09:18.39\00:09:21.21 they were known for just beating people up 00:09:21.25\00:09:23.44 killing them... all these things... 00:09:23.48\00:09:24.64 Even the name, "Decepticons" 00:09:24.68\00:09:26.88 I mean... you know... sounds like... bad news... 00:09:26.92\00:09:29.14 Well, they basically interpreted 00:09:29.17\00:09:32.75 the Decepticon guys who got beaten up, 00:09:32.79\00:09:34.64 they figured I started this fight... 00:09:34.67\00:09:36.45 I sent the guys... so, they began to call my house 00:09:36.48\00:09:41.55 and tell my mother and my father "We're going to kill your son" 00:09:41.58\00:09:43.67 and so on... and my mother got very nervous 00:09:43.71\00:09:45.67 Wow... 00:09:45.71\00:09:47.01 and she said, "You can't go back to School" 00:09:47.04\00:09:48.29 and so I became a high school dropout... 00:09:48.32\00:09:49.57 Wow, and at what grade were you in at this point? 00:09:49.60\00:09:52.15 This was when I was in 11th Grade... 00:09:52.19\00:09:55.10 Okay... oh wow! so you were a Junior... one year left... 00:09:55.14\00:09:58.17 and you dropped out... Hmmm... hmmm... 00:09:58.21\00:10:00.30 Well, what happened after that is... 00:10:00.33\00:10:01.96 I ended up having to look for a job... had to work... 00:10:02.00\00:10:04.82 because I couldn't go back to School... 00:10:04.85\00:10:07.05 so, odd jobs were not working for me 00:10:07.08\00:10:09.25 I took a job at UPS... hated it... 00:10:09.29\00:10:11.46 tried to do another job in another location 00:10:11.49\00:10:14.02 hated it... so I told my mother and father 00:10:14.05\00:10:16.33 I said, "Listen, they always do auditions for videos 00:10:16.37\00:10:20.55 in New York... in Manhattan... so let me give it a try" 00:10:20.58\00:10:24.73 again, because my parents didn't have any 00:10:24.76\00:10:26.50 strong moral standards... they just said, 00:10:26.53\00:10:27.77 "Go for it... whatever you believe you can do... do it... " 00:10:27.80\00:10:30.04 Hmmm... hmmm... so I went from the house parties 00:10:30.08\00:10:32.60 and I started going to music auditions... 00:10:32.63\00:10:34.49 and that's how I started getting into the Entertainment Industry 00:10:34.52\00:10:37.51 I see... so you went to some of these auditions 00:10:37.54\00:10:40.79 and one of them clicked for you... 00:10:40.82\00:10:42.48 one of them clicked... 00:10:42.51\00:10:43.61 it's probably the one that clicked that really helped 00:10:43.65\00:10:46.00 launch my career... was with Queen Latifah... 00:10:46.04\00:10:48.36 Okay... Queen Latifah held an audition 00:10:48.40\00:10:51.06 and I was part of the group called "Quiet Stone" 00:10:51.09\00:10:53.96 and our concept was always "We walk soft but we hit hard" 00:10:54.00\00:10:57.55 Hmmm... Quiet Stone... 00:10:57.59\00:10:59.17 and we would just go in there 00:10:59.21\00:11:00.65 and just kind of look like nobody... 00:11:00.68\00:11:02.21 but when it was time for the dance... 00:11:02.25\00:11:03.71 and they would press play in that music... 00:11:03.74\00:11:05.89 the music took over... and, therefore, 00:11:05.93\00:11:08.01 I would demonstrate my talent and then, Latifah said, 00:11:08.04\00:11:11.03 "Oh yeah, we got to bring this guy in... " 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.33 Hmmm... and that's how I got in... 00:11:12.36\00:11:14.49 I went on the Apocalypse '91 World Tour 00:11:14.52\00:11:16.61 you know, with the Public Enemy 00:11:16.64\00:11:18.38 and there were several other artists 00:11:18.41\00:11:20.03 and that was kind of like the really kick-off... 00:11:20.06\00:11:22.06 Hmmm... of my being involved in the 00:11:22.09\00:11:23.90 Entertainment Industry as a dancer and choreographer... 00:11:23.94\00:11:26.17 One of the things that people might not know 00:11:26.20\00:11:28.41 about the Entertainment Industry is... it is about "who you know" 00:11:28.44\00:11:32.48 Oh yeah... because those doors open 00:11:32.51\00:11:34.41 as you get to know one person and they recommend you 00:11:34.45\00:11:38.11 to somebody else... that's how the doors open for you 00:11:38.14\00:11:41.77 Absolutely... it's kind of... from within 00:11:41.80\00:11:44.44 Yes, it is... and so, you're saying that 00:11:44.47\00:11:47.04 when you started out... you took these auditions 00:11:47.07\00:11:49.98 and stuff... did really well... one person saw you... 00:11:50.02\00:11:52.91 "We got to have him... " and then, the rest of the doors 00:11:52.95\00:11:55.81 started opening... Really, the rest is history... 00:11:55.84\00:11:57.30 Wow, so who else did you... 00:11:57.33\00:11:59.95 work with, some of the names? 00:11:59.98\00:12:02.56 I worked with Queen Latifah, I worked with Salt-N-Pepa 00:12:02.60\00:12:06.82 Hmmm... hmmm... worked with a Rap Artist 00:12:06.85\00:12:08.99 by the name of MC Lyte, 00:12:09.02\00:12:10.09 I started to work with Busta Rhymes 00:12:10.12\00:12:11.96 and then Leaders Of The New School 00:12:12.00\00:12:13.81 A Tribe Called Quest... Wu-Tang Clan 00:12:13.84\00:12:15.87 I ended up going more so to the singing side 00:12:15.91\00:12:18.49 so then I met a guy by the name of Tony Terry... 00:12:18.53\00:12:20.74 who was a great R and B Artist at that time... 00:12:20.78\00:12:23.46 really well known... then Cee Cee Peniston 00:12:23.49\00:12:25.87 and then, of course, Brandy... Hmmm... hmmm... 00:12:25.90\00:12:28.24 when I got a chance to work with Brandy, 00:12:28.28\00:12:29.87 and these were individuals 00:12:29.90\00:12:31.89 that we started doing music videos with and tours with, 00:12:31.92\00:12:34.49 and then it started to branch into other things like 00:12:34.53\00:12:37.07 Commercials... Sprite commercials, 00:12:37.10\00:12:39.17 Coco Cola, Nike and the list goes on... 00:12:39.20\00:12:41.22 Hmmm... hmmm... then eventually there was a 00:12:41.25\00:12:43.23 a Sitcom called "New York Under Cover" 00:12:43.26\00:12:46.88 Yeah... and they brought me in 00:12:46.92\00:12:48.48 to do some acting... that was my first time doing acting 00:12:48.51\00:12:50.31 Okay... you know, and, 00:12:50.35\00:12:51.62 that was incredible as well... 00:12:51.66\00:12:52.97 so, it was in a very short period of time 00:12:53.01\00:12:55.83 but before you know it, I was a dancer, a choreographer 00:12:55.87\00:12:58.35 an actor, you know, the list goes on... 00:12:58.39\00:13:00.36 and it was kind of like... you're going uphill... 00:13:00.39\00:13:02.07 Yes... you know... at that point... 00:13:02.10\00:13:03.65 What did you see... this is so important because 00:13:03.68\00:13:06.73 people think that the music industry 00:13:06.76\00:13:09.98 is just all glamour and glitz 00:13:10.02\00:13:11.45 and that people are just having a great time... 00:13:11.48\00:13:13.49 and all that... Hmmm... hmmm... 00:13:13.52\00:13:14.80 what did you see... behind the scenes 00:13:14.83\00:13:17.34 that would make you go, "Whoa... " 00:13:17.38\00:13:19.47 that would kind of take you aback 00:13:19.50\00:13:21.56 what did you see? Yes... 00:13:21.60\00:13:22.79 there is a lot that takes place when the lights go off... 00:13:22.83\00:13:28.00 and I realize that the Entertainment Industry 00:13:28.03\00:13:31.26 it's very trap-oriented... because what they do is... 00:13:31.30\00:13:33.99 when the lights are on... and you see the music videos, 00:13:34.03\00:13:37.10 and you see the "Bling... bling" all of the glamour, 00:13:37.14\00:13:40.18 the money... the women... the men... 00:13:40.21\00:13:41.60 and this that and the other... but when those lights go off... 00:13:41.64\00:13:45.18 it's a whole different world... I saw murder, I saw thievery, 00:13:45.22\00:13:48.27 I saw abuse... 00:13:48.30\00:13:49.99 I saw individuals who were wrongly done... 00:13:50.03\00:13:53.75 there were things that were done to them that were horrible 00:13:53.78\00:13:57.15 it's difficult to even mention specifically some of the things 00:13:57.18\00:14:00.51 that I've seen... I've seen a lot of crooked behavior, 00:14:00.55\00:14:02.50 a lot of crooked foul activities 00:14:02.53\00:14:03.93 you know, you see these things when the lights go off... 00:14:03.97\00:14:06.11 there are promises made but not fulfilled 00:14:06.15\00:14:08.31 Hmmm... hmmm... there's a lot of using and 00:14:08.35\00:14:10.48 abusing of individuals from the mental to the physical 00:14:10.51\00:14:13.01 and perhaps in certain ways even spiritual levels... 00:14:13.05\00:14:15.55 Yes... then there's a lot of bloodshed 00:14:15.59\00:14:18.04 there's a lot of fighting, there is murder, you know, 00:14:18.07\00:14:21.61 there are things that take place that I saw... that I said, 00:14:21.65\00:14:25.81 "Man, I didn't know that I was entering into this... " 00:14:25.84\00:14:27.86 Yes, see to me... that is the thing... 00:14:27.90\00:14:32.55 Satan is so conniving... 00:14:32.58\00:14:35.72 he presents this picture that everything is beautiful... 00:14:35.76\00:14:39.56 but when those lights go off 00:14:39.59\00:14:41.89 you see... all of this dirt... Corruption... 00:14:41.92\00:14:44.42 yes... all of these things that are going on 00:14:44.45\00:14:46.92 and just... it's just... you know that it's a trap 00:14:46.96\00:14:51.08 That's right... it is a trap... 00:14:51.12\00:14:52.70 and I want our Viewers to know that... 00:14:52.73\00:14:55.02 that's so important... because we get beguiled... 00:14:55.05\00:14:57.81 Yes... we're beguiled by the Serpent 00:14:57.84\00:15:00.48 we're really... get beguiled... and if we if we are not careful, 00:15:00.52\00:15:03.88 we think it's so great... 00:15:03.92\00:15:05.32 Now, I'm going to come to you Brother Lance... 00:15:05.35\00:15:08.15 because I want to hear what's been going on with you 00:15:08.18\00:15:10.97 and then we're going to talk about Tekoa... 00:15:11.01\00:15:12.54 I wish I had an hour... I need an hour with you guys... 00:15:12.58\00:15:17.80 see it's not fair... you're going to be doing 00:15:17.83\00:15:19.77 something on the Today Program, 00:15:19.81\00:15:21.04 and I didn't get you for an hour, ok, so I am going 00:15:21.08\00:15:23.13 to have to talk to them. 00:15:23.17\00:15:24.20 Okay, now Brother Lance... tell us about yourself... 00:15:24.23\00:15:26.59 Where did you come from? 00:15:26.63\00:15:28.16 I'm from Massachusetts originally... 00:15:28.20\00:15:31.29 I was born right on the outskirts of Boston... 00:15:31.33\00:15:34.15 and I lived in and out of Boston and around the area... 00:15:34.18\00:15:36.87 pretty much... growing up... 00:15:36.90\00:15:37.99 I kind of come in from a different angle... 00:15:38.03\00:15:41.18 similar background... I had a single-parent household 00:15:41.21\00:15:43.60 I was raised by my mother, bi-racial family... 00:15:43.64\00:15:45.43 and really no morals in the house... 00:15:45.46\00:15:50.68 I mean there was standards and values, I guess, 00:15:50.72\00:15:52.38 it wasn't complete chaos... Hmmm... hmmm... 00:15:52.41\00:15:54.60 but no religion... certainly no religion... 00:15:54.64\00:15:56.79 pretty much... try everything once... 00:15:56.83\00:15:58.26 you know, do whatever you want 00:15:58.30\00:15:59.67 as long as it doesn't hurt anybody 00:15:59.70\00:16:00.94 kind of values... Hmmm... hmmm... 00:16:00.98\00:16:02.18 so, I was exposed to a lot of things... 00:16:02.22\00:16:04.53 early on... you know... 00:16:04.56\00:16:07.07 domestic violence, drugs, 00:16:07.11\00:16:09.50 alcohol... all kinds of things at a young age... 00:16:09.53\00:16:12.99 so by ten-years-old... I was already 00:16:13.03\00:16:15.29 repeating those things... 00:16:15.32\00:16:17.12 and repeating the behaviors that I witnessed... so... 00:16:17.15\00:16:18.75 I was already getting involved in the streets 00:16:18.78\00:16:21.20 more heavily and smoking and drinking 00:16:21.23\00:16:23.10 and that just escalated By ten... 00:16:23.13\00:16:24.96 by ten... yeah... Wow! 00:16:25.00\00:16:26.26 so, pretty much, eleven, twelve, now it's everyday... 00:16:26.30\00:16:30.31 and I'm pretty much now getting sucked into that 00:16:30.34\00:16:33.31 street life... and it was just, at that time... 00:16:33.34\00:16:36.22 pervaded by hip hop culture... so, I became addicted to it 00:16:36.25\00:16:41.23 I mean... I was kind of anti-establishment 00:16:41.27\00:16:43.97 and I was just, I don't know, 00:16:44.00\00:16:48.04 people probably had all kinds of bad names for me, 00:16:48.07\00:16:50.66 but I was just on the streets... Yeah, yeah... 00:16:50.69\00:16:53.24 whatever you can imagine... that life would be... 00:16:53.28\00:16:55.74 that's what I did... 00:16:55.78\00:16:56.82 so, I had my mid-life crisis at 15... 00:16:56.86\00:16:59.24 because I had pretty much done everything, you know, 00:16:59.28\00:17:02.89 tried everything that I wanted to try... 00:17:02.92\00:17:06.89 just partying and you know money and 00:17:06.92\00:17:10.81 basically anything that came to mind, I did it... 00:17:10.85\00:17:14.77 if I wanted to do it... I did it 00:17:14.81\00:17:16.06 and there was nothing... there was no law or anything 00:17:16.09\00:17:18.82 that could stop me... so, a large group of friends 00:17:18.86\00:17:21.55 a large "crew" if you will... 00:17:21.59\00:17:22.99 that we used to be together everyday, 00:17:23.02\00:17:24.78 every day was like a party... 00:17:24.81\00:17:26.17 and eventually, I just got disgusted with that, 00:17:26.21\00:17:29.27 lifestyle... at 15... Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... 00:17:29.31\00:17:31.96 it wasn't fun anymore... it was kind of maxed out... 00:17:32.00\00:17:34.61 Hmmm... hmmm... ran its limits... 00:17:34.65\00:17:36.08 so, I began asking questions, I literally remember 00:17:36.12\00:17:39.63 a conversation that I had "God" whoever I understood 00:17:39.66\00:17:43.14 was God at that time... because I remember 00:17:43.18\00:17:46.98 as a young child... having a conception of God 00:17:47.01\00:17:50.78 and Christ and the Bible... but, no real experience, 00:17:50.82\00:17:53.71 you know Church... and weddings and funerals and... 00:17:53.75\00:17:56.61 Right... Easter and Christmas 00:17:56.65\00:17:57.82 kind of thing... But no relationship... 00:17:57.85\00:17:59.18 no relationship... Yeah... 00:17:59.21\00:18:00.28 I just had peripheral knowledge, 00:18:00.31\00:18:02.71 so, I remember asking for things I understood, 00:18:02.75\00:18:06.09 "Oh, you pray for something and God 00:18:06.12\00:18:09.06 'is supposed to give it to you'" so, I remember asking for things 00:18:09.10\00:18:11.80 and if it didn't immediately manifest itself... 00:18:11.83\00:18:14.42 I would curse God out... and I would just have tirades at God 00:18:14.45\00:18:17.47 Wow! so, fast-forward at 15... 00:18:17.51\00:18:19.26 it was mid-life crisis... I'm disgusted with my life, 00:18:19.30\00:18:21.15 I'm not satisfied... and I asked the question, 00:18:21.18\00:18:25.30 "Why am I here... what is the purpose... 00:18:25.33\00:18:27.33 is there a God... is the universe... " 00:18:27.36\00:18:29.29 all these questions... these Proverbial questions 00:18:29.32\00:18:33.86 and an answer came into my head 00:18:33.89\00:18:35.80 a very clear voice came into my head 00:18:35.84\00:18:37.70 and the voice said, "If you want answers, go and read... " 00:18:37.74\00:18:39.84 Hmmm... and I hated reading... 00:18:39.87\00:18:42.01 to me reading was for certain kinds of people... 00:18:42.04\00:18:45.70 Nerds? exactly, exactly... 00:18:45.73\00:18:47.83 so I just wasn't in to it... I mean, I was never "dumb" 00:18:47.87\00:18:50.92 I mean, I was always an "intelligent kid" 00:18:50.95\00:18:53.50 and I could do what I wanted... but I didn't like School... 00:18:53.54\00:18:57.25 it just didn't appeal to me... so, I took it as a challenge 00:18:57.29\00:19:00.97 I was very competitive, I played sports... 00:19:01.00\00:19:03.88 I was a three-sport athlete, and so I said, 00:19:03.92\00:19:06.77 "All right, that's a challenge if you want answers, go read" 00:19:06.80\00:19:08.52 I took it like that... I literally got up 00:19:08.56\00:19:09.93 and left my house, and went to the High School I was attending 00:19:09.96\00:19:15.33 I went to the Library and took out some books... 00:19:15.37\00:19:17.08 I took out some books on philosophy, 00:19:17.12\00:19:18.47 I took out a book on Shamanism, I took out a book on Egyptology, 00:19:18.51\00:19:22.75 and I took out a book on Mars... the planet, the red planet... 00:19:22.78\00:19:26.99 Whoa... whoa... Egyptology and Shamanism... 00:19:27.02\00:19:29.88 Yes... yes Whoa, okay... 00:19:29.92\00:19:31.23 so I started my journey... 00:19:31.26\00:19:33.19 I literally now... 15, 16, 17, 18... 00:19:33.22\00:19:36.81 I'm still in the streets, I'm still doing all kinds of 00:19:36.84\00:19:38.96 Were you doing music at this point? 00:19:39.00\00:19:40.11 Yeah, pretty much by this time it was music and basketball... 00:19:40.14\00:19:45.46 or street and basketball... I had already received 00:19:45.49\00:19:48.02 some invitations... even in my sophomore year 00:19:48.06\00:19:51.16 I was receiving letters to play basketball 00:19:51.20\00:19:53.59 at various schools... but I hated school... 00:19:53.62\00:19:55.94 and so, street life and drugs and alcohol every day... 00:19:55.98\00:20:01.68 and late nights don't mix with high-level athletics... 00:20:01.72\00:20:07.39 and so, they were able to scrape me by... 00:20:07.42\00:20:10.48 and I received, you know, people offering to buy you shoes 00:20:10.52\00:20:14.58 and send you to camps and do all these things 00:20:14.61\00:20:16.99 and pass you through grades and classes... 00:20:17.02\00:20:19.33 that you don't even attend or don't do any homework for... 00:20:19.37\00:20:21.56 Wow! but I just... I got less 00:20:21.60\00:20:24.73 and less interested with School, I guess the whole idea was... 00:20:24.77\00:20:27.37 I'd wake up whenever I wanted, go into school... 00:20:27.41\00:20:29.07 just find out what's going on for the day and then leave... 00:20:29.10\00:20:31.76 So, how did you get into the pro-music... 00:20:31.79\00:20:36.92 I know that you were doing music and basketball... 00:20:36.96\00:20:38.99 how did music, then, take over? 00:20:39.02\00:20:40.80 Because, basically, with hip hop culture 00:20:40.83\00:20:43.72 when I was just completely engrafted into... 00:20:43.75\00:20:46.44 in running the streets and taking in the culture 00:20:46.47\00:20:50.19 through the music, and the entertainment 00:20:50.22\00:20:51.59 and the movies... and, you know, my surroundings 00:20:51.63\00:20:54.11 and the people that I was running with everyday... 00:20:54.14\00:20:56.59 that became an option... in other words... 00:20:56.62\00:20:59.15 I was always good with speaking, and just... 00:20:59.18\00:21:01.53 it was a natural talent that I had... 00:21:01.56\00:21:03.39 so, it's something that I heard... 00:21:03.42\00:21:05.18 and, you know, you go from memorizing people's songs, 00:21:05.22\00:21:07.56 to then... somebody saying, 00:21:07.60\00:21:09.22 "Hey why don't you make your own?" 00:21:09.25\00:21:10.69 Okay... and then you sit down... 00:21:10.72\00:21:12.07 and it's just automatic... you don't... it comes naturally 00:21:12.11\00:21:15.13 so, everyday becomes now... 00:21:15.16\00:21:16.38 I'm going to pursue this professionally... 00:21:16.41\00:21:18.62 so, I'm going to just... from writing rhymes and Emceeing 00:21:18.65\00:21:23.57 amongst your friends... 00:21:23.61\00:21:25.01 now you're going to different levels... 00:21:25.04\00:21:27.06 so, I connected with pretty much the most prominent 00:21:27.09\00:21:30.59 Deejay Producer in the Boston area 00:21:30.62\00:21:33.22 he was in... pretty much all the prominent magazines at the time 00:21:33.25\00:21:36.96 and Boston really didn't have a reputable hip-hop or music 00:21:37.00\00:21:40.90 scene for the hip hop culture so it was very, very isolated 00:21:40.93\00:21:44.80 groups that were identified with the city of Boston... 00:21:44.84\00:21:47.93 so there was an underground swelling that was happening 00:21:47.96\00:21:51.25 at the time... as hip-hop was starting to spread globally 00:21:51.28\00:21:54.19 where... we were just getting more and more opportunities 00:21:54.23\00:21:57.06 so, I started getting serious, I started putting together Sets 00:21:57.10\00:22:00.27 and putting together a demo... and recording... 00:22:00.30\00:22:03.42 and that kind of went from there... 00:22:03.45\00:22:06.36 So, you guys both... this is so deep... 00:22:06.39\00:22:09.39 you guys both... had invested yourselves 00:22:09.42\00:22:12.35 into that whole hip hop culture, into that whole music deal... 00:22:12.38\00:22:17.47 and yet, you were brought out from it... 00:22:17.50\00:22:20.87 I want to know... as quickly as you can 00:22:20.91\00:22:24.21 tell me, how you got out, because I want to hear about 00:22:24.24\00:22:27.66 Tekoa Mission... Yes... 00:22:27.69\00:22:29.16 how did you, first Dwayne, how did you find the Lord? 00:22:29.19\00:22:33.52 and then I want to hear about it from you... 00:22:33.55\00:22:35.53 Okay... even while I was in the Entertainment Industry, 00:22:35.56\00:22:38.21 traveling and everything, 00:22:38.24\00:22:39.47 even the partners that I brought in... to dance with me, 00:22:39.51\00:22:41.53 one of them, he actually decided 00:22:41.56\00:22:43.89 to no longer go in to work with me anymore, 00:22:43.92\00:22:45.35 and I asked him, "Why?" 00:22:45.38\00:22:46.62 and he said, "Because Christ and the world do not mix" 00:22:46.66\00:22:48.98 Hmmm... hmmm... now, that was a seed... 00:22:49.02\00:22:51.34 when you think about the Bible, in Isaiah 55 where it says, 00:22:51.38\00:22:54.26 "so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: 00:22:54.30\00:22:56.29 it shall not return unto me void... " 00:22:56.32\00:22:57.86 Right... he planted a seed in my mind... 00:22:57.90\00:22:58.96 Right... so, I'm thinking, 00:22:58.99\00:23:00.31 "Christ and the world do not mix" 00:23:00.34\00:23:01.46 at first I was like, "Man, you're crazy... 00:23:01.49\00:23:03.53 all this money and everything... and you're telling me 00:23:03.57\00:23:06.09 that you're going to turn it away for Jesus?" 00:23:06.12\00:23:07.49 it didn't make any sense... but then... 00:23:07.53\00:23:09.71 a very traumatic experience happened... 00:23:09.75\00:23:11.90 my nephew got killed... Hmmm... 00:23:11.93\00:23:13.75 and when my nephew got killed, it was one of the first funerals 00:23:13.78\00:23:16.01 that I ever went to... and when I went to that funeral, 00:23:16.05\00:23:18.68 that's when... watching his casket go into 00:23:18.71\00:23:22.61 the ground... it felt like he was being pulled out of my life 00:23:22.64\00:23:24.72 and it was through that experience 00:23:24.75\00:23:27.90 that when we went back into the limousine... 00:23:27.93\00:23:29.31 all the voices in the limousine kind of drowned out... 00:23:29.34\00:23:31.65 I started to hear a voice asking me very clearly, 00:23:31.68\00:23:34.33 "Will you accept me now?" Wow! 00:23:34.36\00:23:36.69 "Will you accept me now?" Wow... 00:23:36.72\00:23:38.98 and it was like... that voice was clear as day 00:23:39.02\00:23:41.23 and in my mind, I knew that this must be God... 00:23:41.26\00:23:43.44 Yes... and that was the first time 00:23:43.47\00:23:45.12 that I ever said, "Yes" to the Lord... 00:23:45.16\00:23:47.00 Wow! that's awesome, what about you? 00:23:47.04\00:23:48.85 Yeah so, going back, 00:23:48.89\00:23:50.73 when I heard that voice 00:23:50.77\00:23:52.54 that said, "If you want answers go and read... " 00:23:52.58\00:23:54.68 so I did... and so the whole time 00:23:54.71\00:23:56.85 when I'm continuing to deal drugs and run the streets 00:23:56.88\00:24:00.05 and produce music... I'm studying... I'm reading... 00:24:00.08\00:24:03.25 heavily... Hmmm... 00:24:03.29\00:24:04.45 so, fast forward 5 years later and about 60 books, 00:24:04.48\00:24:08.83 of all kinds of religions, New Age, 00:24:08.86\00:24:11.56 and Buddhism and Islam... I pretty much decided 00:24:11.59\00:24:14.35 that I was going to join the 5 percent Nation... 00:24:14.39\00:24:17.08 it's an off-shoot of the NOl... the Nation of Islam in America 00:24:17.11\00:24:20.48 and so, through a providential series of events... 00:24:20.51\00:24:27.92 I found myself in a Barber Shop, I sat in this Barber Shop, 00:24:27.96\00:24:31.68 and I began to go into the Barber Shop 00:24:31.72\00:24:33.43 to get haircuts and just to hang out... 00:24:33.47\00:24:35.12 I was very close to the person I was working with... 00:24:35.15\00:24:36.75 and we used to get into religious matters... 00:24:36.78\00:24:38.80 and had virtual fist fights over religion 00:24:38.83\00:24:40.78 and I was 60 books in... and I felt that I knew everything 00:24:40.81\00:24:43.18 you couldn't tell me anything, and one day, the owner, 00:24:43.21\00:24:45.54 after months and months, the owner said, 00:24:45.58\00:24:46.89 "Hey, I have a Pastor coming in to give a Bible Study, 00:24:46.93\00:24:48.86 why don't you sit and wait... " 00:24:48.90\00:24:50.30 I said, "No problem... " I thought, 00:24:50.33\00:24:51.82 "Another challenge" Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah... 00:24:51.85\00:24:53.46 "like the pastor is not going to be embarrassing you" 00:24:53.49\00:24:55.06 so, I sat in... closed the Barber Shop, after hours 00:24:55.10\00:24:57.83 there were about 25 of us in the Barber Shop... 00:24:57.87\00:25:00.56 we sat down for a Bible Study 00:25:00.60\00:25:01.90 and the Bible Study was on the Authority of God's Word 00:25:01.93\00:25:04.40 and the prophecies of Daniel chapter 2... 00:25:04.43\00:25:06.16 I had already read books that I had accepted as truth, 00:25:06.20\00:25:09.42 prior to, sitting down and seeing this in the Bible, 00:25:09.45\00:25:12.87 and when I saw it in the Bible, my mouth was stopped 00:25:12.90\00:25:16.28 Wow! and I asked for that set of 00:25:16.32\00:25:18.08 lessons... there were 31 lessons in the series 00:25:18.11\00:25:20.24 I took them home, I did all of them once, twice, 00:25:20.27\00:25:22.33 I was half way the third time, 00:25:22.36\00:25:23.57 and the Pastor asked me 00:25:23.61\00:25:24.86 if I had any questions... The day-to-day... 00:26:33.64\00:26:35.84 so, learning how to offer solutions to people's issues 00:26:35.88\00:26:40.40 and ministering to people physically, mentally, 00:26:40.44\00:26:42.85 and spiritually... so, creating a network, if you will, 00:26:42.89\00:26:46.38 that workers can be trained to offer those services 00:26:46.42\00:26:49.76 and then offer something outside of the cities, 00:26:49.79\00:26:52.62 in the Country... to bring people from the cities 00:26:52.66\00:26:55.45 out there... and let them see the contrast 00:26:55.49\00:26:57.46 to see that there's a different way of life... 00:26:57.50\00:26:59.40 so we take a lot of young people from urban areas... 00:26:59.44\00:27:01.10 so, then they can go back into those urban areas... 00:27:01.14\00:27:04.62 not just after the education but we're working these centers 00:27:04.65\00:27:07.76 while they are being educated so they're getting a practical 00:27:07.80\00:27:10.87 education and the Biblical, theoretical training as well... 00:27:10.91\00:27:13.95 Wow! that is wonderful... 00:27:13.99\00:27:16.19 what a wonderful God-inspired plan! 00:27:16.23\00:27:19.46 Yeah... and I praise the Lord 00:27:19.50\00:27:21.26 for you guys...
