Music... 00:00:01.36\00:00:31.16 Well, today I have chosen 00:00:31.19\00:00:35.20 for us to focus on a passage of Scripture 00:00:35.23\00:00:39.90 found in 2nd Kings chapter 5, 00:00:39.93\00:00:44.01 2nd Kings chapter 5. 00:00:44.04\00:00:48.11 It's the story of a leper 00:00:48.14\00:00:51.58 and the story is told in two parts... 00:00:51.61\00:00:55.65 and we're only going to look at one part of it today. 00:00:55.68\00:00:58.52 The name of the leper was Naaman. 00:00:58.55\00:01:02.59 King James has it... "Captain Naaman" 00:01:02.62\00:01:06.59 more up-to-date translations have it... "Commander Naaman. " 00:01:06.63\00:01:12.50 So it's a story of a... of a man... 00:01:12.53\00:01:17.34 a prominent man with leprosy 00:01:17.37\00:01:20.98 who needed to become cleansed or pure. 00:01:21.01\00:01:26.75 The second part of the story talks about a man 00:01:26.78\00:01:31.42 who was pure and clean but became a leper 00:01:31.45\00:01:37.73 and that was the servant of Elisha the Prophet... 00:01:37.79\00:01:43.16 his name was Gehazi and so we won't spend... 00:01:43.20\00:01:47.24 we won't have the time to spend looking at the second part today 00:01:47.27\00:01:52.97 we'll focus on the first part 00:01:53.04\00:01:54.78 and so our emphasis will be Naaman the leper. 00:01:54.84\00:01:59.55 I have... just to kind of help us along 00:01:59.58\00:02:06.45 in the understanding of the story, 00:02:06.49\00:02:08.92 I want to read the entire story, 2nd Kings 5 verses 1 to 14. 00:02:08.96\00:02:17.00 I've chosen to read it out of a version called: 00:02:17.03\00:02:22.30 The English Standard Version... ESV 00:02:22.34\00:02:26.34 now I'm guessing most of you do not have an ESV version 00:02:26.37\00:02:30.68 here today. 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.05 I'm guessing you have a New King James or a King James 00:02:32.08\00:02:35.32 but probably not an ESV. 00:02:35.35\00:02:39.72 The ESV version has a colorful and interesting history 00:02:39.75\00:02:46.29 of its origins and how it came to be. 00:02:46.33\00:02:50.03 It's the preferred translation of the conservative arm 00:02:50.07\00:02:56.14 of the Protestant Church... Evangelicals... 00:02:56.17\00:03:00.61 this is... this is their Bible, okay. 00:03:00.64\00:03:03.78 Its predecessor was the RSV... Revised Standard Version 00:03:03.81\00:03:11.19 that came out in the year of my birth... 1952... 66 years ago. 00:03:11.22\00:03:17.09 the RSV came out... 00:03:17.13\00:03:19.19 but it was rejected by the Evangelical or Conservative 00:03:19.23\00:03:24.40 Christian Churches 00:03:24.43\00:03:26.70 for some of the way it translated Scripture 00:03:26.74\00:03:30.54 but years later, when the Evangelicals rejected the NIV 00:03:30.57\00:03:38.68 for gender-inclusive language... 00:03:38.71\00:03:41.68 now, there's a difference between gender accurate 00:03:41.72\00:03:44.62 and gender inclusive 00:03:44.65\00:03:46.19 but NIV went to gender inclusive 00:03:46.22\00:03:48.62 that is putting female terms in where it's not there, 00:03:48.66\00:03:53.53 so the Conservative Christian Denominations rejected that 00:03:53.56\00:03:58.50 and commissioned that they take the RSV and sanitize it. 00:03:58.53\00:04:03.41 In other words, 00:04:03.44\00:04:05.47 look at the areas that they were very opposed to 00:04:05.51\00:04:10.01 and they got the Rights to re-translate it 00:04:10.05\00:04:13.35 and that's what you have here today. 00:04:13.38\00:04:15.82 Well, I just bought a new Bible 00:04:15.85\00:04:17.72 and I thought, "Well, we'll try this" 00:04:17.75\00:04:19.52 Mr. Babb has been gracious to put it on the screen. 00:04:19.55\00:04:24.29 You can follow in your own Bible 00:04:24.33\00:04:26.66 which may be a different translation 00:04:26.70\00:04:28.96 or you can follow it on the screen... as I read. 00:04:29.00\00:04:32.57 Let's bow our heads for just a minute, 00:04:32.63\00:04:34.60 "Father in heaven, we are... 00:04:34.64\00:04:35.97 we are now going to read the sacred text of Scripture 00:04:36.00\00:04:39.91 that you have preserved down through the ages, 00:04:39.97\00:04:44.05 that we might have it today 00:04:44.08\00:04:45.41 in the last hours of earth's history 00:04:45.45\00:04:47.45 and have it to be our guide and our teacher, 00:04:47.48\00:04:50.52 but we so easily go astray as we read from Your Word 00:04:50.55\00:04:56.99 and come up with all kinds of interesting and different ideas, 00:04:57.03\00:05:01.66 ones that you never ordained to be, 00:05:01.70\00:05:04.33 and so, we just ask that you again 00:05:04.37\00:05:06.77 would be our Teacher and Guide 00:05:06.80\00:05:08.70 as we read from the passage that we've chosen today 00:05:08.74\00:05:12.71 about Naaman the leper, in Jesus' name, amen. " 00:05:12.74\00:05:18.41 Audience: Amen. 00:05:18.45\00:05:19.78 "Naaman, commander of the army 00:05:19.81\00:05:24.69 of the king of Syria, 00:05:24.72\00:05:27.72 was a great man with his master and in high favor, 00:05:27.76\00:05:33.63 because by him the Lord... " get that... 00:05:33.66\00:05:39.13 "the Lord... " not the lords of Syria 00:05:39.17\00:05:44.57 but the Lord... 00:05:44.61\00:05:45.94 "had given victory to Syria. 00:05:45.97\00:05:50.28 He was a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper. 00:05:50.31\00:05:55.65 Now the Syrians on one of their raids 00:05:55.68\00:06:00.12 had carried off a little girl from the land of Israel, 00:06:00.16\00:06:06.29 and she worked in the service of Naaman' s wife. 00:06:06.33\00:06:11.23 And she said to her mistress, 00:06:11.27\00:06:15.30 'Would that my Lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! 00:06:15.34\00:06:23.78 He would cure him of his leprosy. ' 00:06:23.81\00:06:28.15 So Naaman went in and told his lord... " 00:06:28.18\00:06:33.56 now, his lord was the king, 00:06:33.59\00:06:35.79 "And Naaman told his lord, 00:06:35.82\00:06:37.96 'Thus and so spoke the girl from the land of Israel. ' 00:06:37.99\00:06:42.76 And the king of Syria says, 00:06:42.80\00:06:45.97 'Go now... I'll send a letter to the king of Israel. ' 00:06:46.00\00:06:50.24 So he went, 00:06:50.27\00:06:51.61 he took with him ten talents of silver, 00:06:51.64\00:06:55.64 six thousand shekels of gold, ten changes of clothing. 00:06:55.68\00:07:01.45 And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, 00:07:01.48\00:07:05.49 which read, 'When this letter reaches you, 00:07:05.52\00:07:08.99 know that I have sent to you Naaman my servant, 00:07:09.02\00:07:13.09 that you may cure him of his leprosy. ' 00:07:13.13\00:07:17.63 And when the king of Israel read the letter, 00:07:17.67\00:07:21.67 he tore his clothes and said, 00:07:21.70\00:07:23.71 'Am I God, to kill and to make alive, 00:07:23.74\00:07:27.58 that this man sends word to me to cure a man of leprosy? 00:07:27.61\00:07:32.65 Only consider, see how he is seeking a quarrel with me. ' 00:07:32.68\00:07:37.69 But when Elisha the man of God 00:07:37.72\00:07:41.42 heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, 00:07:41.46\00:07:44.69 he sent to the king, saying, 'Why have you torn your clothes? 00:07:44.73\00:07:48.73 Let him come to me, 00:07:48.76\00:07:50.83 that he may know that there is a prophet in Israel. ' 00:07:50.87\00:07:54.10 So Naaman came with his horses and chariots 00:07:54.14\00:07:58.17 and stood at the door of Elisha's house. 00:07:58.21\00:08:02.28 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, 00:08:02.31\00:08:05.75 'Go and wash in the River Jordan seven times, 00:08:05.78\00:08:09.15 and your flesh will be restored, and you shall be clean. ' 00:08:09.18\00:08:13.36 But Naaman was angry and went away saying, 00:08:13.39\00:08:16.42 'Behold, I thought he would come surely... 00:08:16.46\00:08:19.46 he would surely come out to me 00:08:19.49\00:08:21.80 and stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, 00:08:21.83\00:08:25.40 wave his hand over the place' you know, the spot... 00:08:25.43\00:08:29.00 'and cure the leper. 00:08:29.04\00:08:31.11 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, 00:08:31.14\00:08:36.28 better than all the rivers of Israel? 00:08:36.31\00:08:38.85 Could I not wash in them and be clean?' 00:08:38.88\00:08:41.85 So he turned... went away in a rage. 00:08:41.88\00:08:44.75 But his servants came near and said to him, 00:08:44.79\00:08:49.46 'My father... my father... 00:08:49.49\00:08:50.99 it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; 00:08:51.03\00:08:54.60 will you not do it? 00:08:54.63\00:08:56.20 Has he actually said to you, 'Wash and be clean?' 00:08:56.26\00:09:00.47 So he went down 00:09:00.50\00:09:01.97 and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, 00:09:02.00\00:09:05.27 according to the word of God 00:09:05.31\00:09:07.48 and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, 00:09:07.54\00:09:11.15 and he was clean. " 00:09:11.18\00:09:12.95 That's the story. 00:09:12.98\00:09:14.55 Now, I will interject here, 00:09:14.58\00:09:18.25 verse 13 reads totally different than your Bible. 00:09:18.32\00:09:24.56 Pause. 00:09:24.59\00:09:26.29 Your Bible probably read 00:09:26.33\00:09:27.93 "And his servants came near, and spoke to him, 00:09:27.96\00:09:30.30 and said, 'My father, 00:09:30.33\00:09:31.67 if the prophet had said to you to do something great, 00:09:31.70\00:09:34.17 would you not have done it? 00:09:34.20\00:09:36.00 How much more then when he says, 00:09:36.04\00:09:39.51 'Go and wash and be clean?'" Okay. 00:09:39.54\00:09:42.94 I... I have an interesting piece of Bible software 00:09:42.98\00:09:48.12 that allows me to take about every translation as possible 00:09:48.15\00:09:53.05 and line them up in a row like this... 00:09:53.12\00:09:56.99 and then, look at any particular verse 00:09:57.03\00:10:00.83 and see how it's rendered in every single translation 00:10:00.86\00:10:05.10 pause... 00:10:05.13\00:10:07.04 this one is the odd duck in the group 00:10:07.07\00:10:10.31 for some reason 00:10:10.34\00:10:12.27 and I really did spend a little time 00:10:12.31\00:10:14.64 trying to find the answer to that 00:10:14.68\00:10:16.98 and I wasn't successful. 00:10:17.01\00:10:18.48 Why did this one read that a little differently? 00:10:18.68\00:10:22.78 I don't know the answer to that. 00:10:22.82\00:10:25.32 I do know that sometimes 00:10:25.35\00:10:27.39 Translators prefer some manuscript over other ones 00:10:27.42\00:10:33.09 because maybe they're older or some reason... 00:10:33.13\00:10:37.63 sometimes the Hebrew... particularly the Hebrew 00:10:37.67\00:10:42.14 is very cryptic 00:10:42.17\00:10:43.67 and you've got to fill in the blanks 00:10:43.71\00:10:45.97 and you can fill in the blanks in a number of different ways 00:10:46.01\00:10:49.58 and it will read differently 00:10:49.64\00:10:50.98 because you have to fill in the blanks. 00:10:51.01\00:10:52.81 It just gives you few... 00:10:52.88\00:10:54.48 so I'm not sure exactly what it was 00:10:54.52\00:10:57.22 but I'm going to keep digging to find out 00:10:57.25\00:10:59.35 and someday I'll know it 00:10:59.39\00:11:00.72 and maybe I'll tell you, how's that? 00:11:00.76\00:11:02.46 But either rendering accomplishes the same purpose 00:11:02.49\00:11:08.70 and that is... the servants came to reason 00:11:08.73\00:11:13.34 with an irate man who wasn't reasonable 00:11:13.37\00:11:17.91 and brought his rage down 00:11:17.94\00:11:20.64 so that he could think rationally... 00:11:20.68\00:11:23.08 and make a good decision 00:11:23.11\00:11:25.11 and see, that's what was trying to happen here. 00:11:25.15\00:11:28.48 So, that is the story of Naaman. 00:11:28.52\00:11:33.52 "Naaman, the Commander of the army of the king of Syria 00:11:33.56\00:11:42.20 was a great man... " 00:25:18.95\00:25:22.02 Pause. 00:25:22.05\00:25:24.95 When you hit this spot... this is difficult. 00:25:24.99\00:25:31.16 We're talking about divine providence and how... 00:25:31.19\00:25:36.77 somehow this little girl found a place in a home 00:25:36.80\00:25:41.54 and all the circumstances that brought her there, 00:25:41.57\00:25:46.31 Scripture doesn't lay it out for us 00:25:46.34\00:25:48.48 but it would have had to been awful. 00:25:48.54\00:25:50.41 I mean, the raiders coming in and pillaging 00:25:50.45\00:25:57.05 and destroying... 00:25:57.09\00:25:58.65 doesn't tell us what happened to her parents... 00:25:58.72\00:26:03.02 were they still alive when she was dragged away? 00:26:03.06\00:26:05.39 Was she out in the field working or playing 00:26:05.43\00:26:10.07 and they came by and picked her up... 00:26:10.13\00:26:12.60 parents don't know what happened to her... 00:26:12.63\00:26:14.84 did she see her parents cut down and then she was dragged way? 00:26:14.87\00:26:20.78 We don't know the circumstances of the story 00:26:20.81\00:26:24.61 but whatever it is, it wasn't good. 00:26:24.65\00:26:28.18 Is God working like that? 00:26:28.22\00:26:31.49 Is divine providence somehow involved? 00:26:31.52\00:26:35.26 Well, I'll be the first to tell you 00:26:35.29\00:26:38.99 I don't know... 00:26:39.03\00:26:40.50 divine providence and how God works 00:26:40.53\00:26:44.73 is a mystery, okay. 00:26:44.77\00:26:48.50 Now we have, like the story of Job 00:26:48.54\00:26:50.87 and God takes the curtain and He sort of opens it 00:26:50.91\00:26:54.61 so that we can see a little bit behind the scenes 00:26:54.64\00:26:57.85 to understand why He's working the way He works, 00:26:57.88\00:27:01.08 in the story of Job we know 00:27:01.12\00:27:03.39 that it's not God that wiped out all of Job's possessions. 00:27:03.42\00:27:06.76 We know that it wasn't God who brought the wind 00:27:06.79\00:27:10.46 that knocked the house down 00:27:10.49\00:27:12.19 and took the lives of all of Job's and Mrs. Job's children. 00:27:12.23\00:27:17.00 We know that it wasn't the finger of God that touched Job 00:27:17.03\00:27:21.80 okay, we know it wasn't that, 00:27:21.84\00:27:23.97 it was the enemy that did all those things 00:27:24.01\00:27:27.58 but yet, God allowed it, okay. 00:27:27.64\00:27:34.55 Now, for me, I can understand, "Oh, I got all my camel's back, 00:27:34.58\00:27:40.66 I got my sheep back, I got my goats back, 00:27:40.69\00:27:43.19 I have my fields, I have my money, 00:27:43.22\00:27:45.19 I don't miss what's past but the kids... 00:27:45.23\00:27:48.90 I don't care how much more kids you give me, 00:27:48.93\00:27:52.57 if I've lost the first batch... 00:27:52.60\00:27:54.80 that doesn't undo the losing of the first batch... " right? 00:27:54.84\00:27:59.47 That's the mystery and is unfathomable understanding 00:27:59.51\00:28:04.01 of God's providential leadings in the lives of... 00:28:04.05\00:28:08.52 of human beings. 00:28:08.55\00:28:10.55 Pause. 00:28:10.59\00:28:12.52 I've troubled over that, when you think about it 00:28:12.55\00:28:16.26 but, you know, I can only say this 00:28:16.29\00:28:19.53 as I've looked over my 66 years of life... 00:28:19.56\00:28:24.17 or will be 66 years of life 00:28:24.20\00:28:26.43 and God's providential leadings in my life, 00:28:26.47\00:28:31.61 I've been through some pretty heart-rending... 00:28:31.64\00:28:36.75 heart wrenching situations, 00:28:36.81\00:28:39.51 but as I've looked back over the perspective of time, 00:28:39.55\00:28:44.82 I've seen how God used those for my good and not for my ill 00:28:44.85\00:28:52.63 and so, what... at least for me 00:28:52.66\00:28:56.23 and this might not answer it for you 00:28:56.26\00:28:58.30 but for me, the areas that say, "I don't understand... " 00:28:58.33\00:29:02.47 I've put on a shelf... "I-don't-understand shelf" 00:29:02.50\00:29:06.88 "It-doesn't-make-sense-to-me-God shelf" 00:29:06.91\00:29:09.18 I put it on there 00:29:09.24\00:29:10.58 and I leave it there trusting because 00:29:10.61\00:29:13.31 I know that He was good to me here 00:29:13.35\00:29:15.98 and meant it for my good over here... 00:29:16.02\00:29:18.55 and just because I don't understand it there, 00:29:18.59\00:29:21.42 I will one day... 00:29:21.46\00:29:23.59 there will be a day when I see Him face-to-face, 00:29:23.63\00:29:27.76 just as you will... and you can ask Him, 00:29:27.80\00:29:31.57 "Lord, why in the world did you do that?" 00:29:31.60\00:29:35.34 Why did you let this happen? 00:29:35.37\00:29:38.31 And I think, He'll make it clear to us 00:29:38.34\00:29:41.08 and when He does, Friends, 00:29:41.11\00:29:43.31 I have all the faith and confidence 00:29:43.35\00:29:46.01 that when He does, 00:29:46.05\00:29:48.82 we will say, "Just and true are Your ways. " 00:29:48.88\00:29:51.89 Audience loudly: Amen. 00:29:51.92\00:29:53.25 "Just and true are Your... 00:29:53.29\00:29:54.62 I agree Lord... absolutely... I agree... 00:29:54.66\00:29:58.13 I wouldn't want it any other way. " 00:29:58.16\00:30:00.66 Hmmm... God's providence. 00:30:00.70\00:30:03.63 God's providence has a purpose, 00:30:03.67\00:30:08.70 God's purpose in His providential leadings 00:30:08.74\00:30:13.71 in this little maid's life 00:30:13.78\00:30:15.61 was for her to help bring a pagan man 00:30:15.64\00:30:18.41 to the knowledge of the one true God 00:30:18.45\00:30:21.08 and through the miracle of God's divine grace 00:30:21.12\00:30:24.42 extended to Captain Naaman, 00:30:24.45\00:30:28.39 helped the entire nation of Syria see the love of God. 00:30:28.42\00:30:34.16 How rich and pure... how measureless... 00:30:34.20\00:30:38.33 it served to glorify God above the heathen idols of that day 00:30:38.37\00:30:44.01 and this is what happened 00:30:44.07\00:30:47.31 for Scripture says, 00:30:47.34\00:30:49.08 "After the healing, Naaman said, 00:30:49.11\00:30:51.11 'Now I know that there is no God in all the earth 00:30:51.15\00:30:54.88 but in Israel. '" 00:30:54.92\00:30:56.55 This little maid... 00:30:56.58\00:30:58.92 by her suffering providence of God... 00:30:58.95\00:31:02.79 caused God to be glorified in the eyes of a heathen nation, 00:31:02.82\00:31:08.83 okay, 00:31:08.86\00:31:10.47 so, we don't know where God's leading will take us, 00:31:10.50\00:31:15.54 but we need to be like that little maid... 00:31:15.57\00:31:18.64 trusting all the way. 00:31:18.67\00:31:21.41 Audience: Amen. 00:31:21.44\00:31:23.14 Pause. 00:31:23.21\00:31:30.09 Something else that... about this little lady 00:31:30.12\00:31:33.79 that I think is good for us to think about, 00:31:33.82\00:31:37.46 pause... 00:31:37.53\00:31:39.73 this little maid knew that there was a prophet 00:31:39.76\00:31:43.63 who could heal Naaman of his leprosy. 00:31:43.67\00:31:47.90 She also knew where he lived. 00:31:47.94\00:31:51.27 She says, "Samaria. " 00:31:51.31\00:31:53.48 Simple truth but very vital knowledge. 00:31:53.51\00:31:58.51 Pause... 00:31:58.55\00:32:01.02 Where did she learn this knowledge? 00:32:01.08\00:32:04.69 She had to have learned it in her home 00:32:04.72\00:32:08.42 pause 00:32:08.46\00:32:09.89 and it was obvious... it was a good home 00:32:09.92\00:32:13.09 for she did not only learn about Elisha 00:32:13.16\00:32:16.30 but she had learned to respect him. 00:32:16.33\00:32:19.40 A bad home speaks often badly about the prophet 00:32:19.43\00:32:25.37 or the preacher for that matter... 00:32:25.41\00:32:26.84 is critical of him... 00:32:26.88\00:32:28.34 and their children did not have the same... 00:32:28.38\00:32:31.08 and take on the same feelings and attitudes of the parent 00:32:31.11\00:32:35.85 but this little maid... she was instructed well by her parents. 00:32:35.88\00:32:40.32 How important is a good home... 00:32:40.36\00:32:43.49 without good homes, a nation sinks... 00:32:43.53\00:32:46.16 so does a church. 00:32:46.19\00:32:47.53 Not only was this little maid instructed well 00:32:47.60\00:32:51.53 but she was also instructed early in her life. 00:32:51.57\00:32:55.80 How important that this was in the story... 00:32:55.84\00:33:00.04 had her parents not taken time 00:33:00.08\00:33:02.01 to instruct her when she was young, 00:33:02.04\00:33:04.55 she would have been of little use in Syria... 00:33:04.58\00:33:08.32 little use in Captain Naaman' s house. 00:33:08.38\00:33:12.19 So we don't want to wait till a child is grown 00:33:12.22\00:33:16.76 to introduce them to spiritual truths. 00:33:16.79\00:33:20.00 The world starts teaching our children early about sin, 00:33:20.03\00:33:24.97 we need to start earlier about grace and God and love. 00:33:25.03\00:33:29.94 Pause. 00:33:29.97\00:33:32.54 Something else about this little girl that's really heartening 00:33:32.57\00:33:37.71 is how gracious she is, 00:33:37.78\00:33:41.98 I mean, most of us... if we had been in the little maid's place, 00:33:42.02\00:33:47.72 we probably would have been glad that Naaman had leprosy. 00:33:47.76\00:33:52.69 We would have felt... "It just serves him right, 00:33:52.76\00:33:56.36 after all, he was so cruel and heartless. " 00:33:56.40\00:33:59.60 We would have... 00:33:59.63\00:34:01.77 at the very least probably kept silent 00:34:01.80\00:34:04.07 about the possibility of his healing 00:34:04.11\00:34:06.31 but this little Jewish lass did not act that way. 00:34:06.34\00:34:10.61 She did not let hard feelings and hard trials make her bitter 00:34:10.65\00:34:16.65 and cause her to quit serving God. 00:34:16.69\00:34:18.72 Like Joseph who did not let the mistreatment of his brothers 00:34:18.75\00:34:23.73 the lying of Potiphar's wife 00:34:23.79\00:34:26.23 or his imprisonment keep him from serving well. 00:34:26.26\00:34:30.10 This little maid did not let her cruel capture and sad slavery 00:34:30.13\00:34:36.74 silence her witness and service for God. 00:34:36.77\00:34:41.11 She graciously gave helpful witness and service 00:34:41.14\00:34:45.98 in spite of her painful situation. 00:34:46.01\00:34:48.15 You know, that should shame many of us adults 00:34:48.18\00:34:52.29 or a number of us adults who get miffed at... 00:34:52.32\00:34:56.39 over something that happens in the church 00:34:56.42\00:34:58.66 and we say, "I'm not going to do that anymore 00:34:58.69\00:35:00.90 okay, because we got miffed. " 00:35:00.93\00:35:03.33 Well, this little girl stands as a rebuke to any of us 00:35:03.77\00:35:09.40 who would take that kind of attitude. 00:35:09.44\00:35:12.17 Verse 4 says now, 00:35:12.24\00:35:13.71 "Naaman went in and told his lord, 00:35:13.74\00:35:16.85 'Thus and so spake the girl from the land of Israel. '" 00:35:16.88\00:35:20.88 The text doesn't tell us how he got the words 00:35:20.92\00:35:24.29 of what the little girl said 00:35:24.32\00:35:25.65 because the little girl, of course, 00:35:25.69\00:35:27.72 was speaking to... Mistress, Naaman' s wife, 00:35:27.76\00:35:31.99 but we can kind of deduce that she probably told him 00:35:32.03\00:35:36.16 and he bought in to what the little maid was saying, 00:35:36.20\00:35:40.37 that's remarkable and so, he goes rushing in to the king 00:35:40.40\00:35:44.37 and the King of Syria says, 00:35:44.41\00:35:46.61 "Go now, I mean, don't wait, go now. 00:35:46.64\00:35:49.88 I'll send a letter to the King of Israel. 00:35:49.91\00:35:52.98 So he went, taking with him ten talents of silver. " 00:35:53.01\00:35:59.55 Bruce, that's 750 pounds... 00:35:59.59\00:36:05.59 that's 12,000 ounces of silver. 00:36:05.63\00:36:11.60 Now, I don't know what silver's worth today... 00:36:11.63\00:36:14.74 I looked up on the Internet, 00:36:14.80\00:36:16.57 and they said the stock price was $16.36. 00:36:16.60\00:36:21.48 Is that anywhere close? 00:36:21.51\00:36:23.08 Okay, that's close. 00:36:23.11\00:36:24.58 Well, if you want to do the little math on that, 00:36:24.61\00:36:27.58 that adds up to about $200,000. 00:36:27.62\00:36:30.15 Now, if any of you have 00:36:30.19\00:36:32.79 ten talents of silver 00:36:32.82\00:36:35.32 and you want to give it to Bruce for 3ABN, 00:36:35.39\00:36:38.46 no problem... 00:36:38.49\00:36:40.50 I mean, 12,000 ounces of silver... 00:36:40.53\00:36:43.57 Bruce can handle it... "No problem... go up... you'll whip them... 00:42:52.20\00:42:54.70 you'll get them, man... it's just going to be wonderful. " 00:42:54.74\00:42:57.21 One of them brings in some horns made of metal 00:42:57.27\00:43:00.71 and he says, "You are going to gore them to death, man, 00:43:00.74\00:43:03.55 you're going to get Ramoth-gilead back... go for it" 00:43:03.58\00:43:05.41 and Jehoshaphat... when they're all done 00:43:05.45\00:43:09.12 leans over to Ahab... 00:43:09.18\00:43:10.52 "Ahab, is there a prophet of God?" 00:43:10.55\00:43:14.19 He recognizes there is a difference between these 400 00:43:14.22\00:43:19.96 and one prophet of Israel... 00:43:20.00\00:43:21.90 "Is there but one prophet of God that we can seek?" 00:43:21.93\00:43:24.30 And Ahab says, 00:43:24.33\00:43:25.93 "Ha, that guy never says anything good about me, 00:43:26.00\00:43:28.20 Micaiah... he never says one good thing about me 00:43:28.24\00:43:30.67 and Jehoshaphat says, "Oh, no, no, no, that's silly, 00:43:30.71\00:43:33.11 I'm sure, he'll tell the truth" 00:43:33.14\00:43:34.51 and so, they go and get Micaiah the prophet. 00:43:34.54\00:43:38.28 Well, the man commissioned to go get Micaiah the prophet... 00:43:38.31\00:43:42.45 he... he takes it upon himself to admonish Micaiah, 00:43:42.48\00:43:49.32 he says, "Now, 400 prophets have all said, 'Go take it, 00:43:49.36\00:43:52.89 you're going to win so, come on, join the crowd, 00:43:52.93\00:43:56.90 say the same thing. I mean, 2nd Kings chapter 3... 00:48:36.08\00:48:41.88 you read about it, 00:48:41.92\00:48:43.49 so, Jehoram knew about the prophet... 00:48:43.52\00:48:47.02 the prophet lived in his own hometown... 00:48:47.06\00:48:50.56 his own hometown was not a Los Angeles. 00:48:50.59\00:48:53.80 I mean, it was bigger than a Thompsonville... 00:48:53.83\00:48:57.07 maybe like Marion or something, you know, 00:48:57.13\00:49:00.34 so he knew about him, 00:49:00.37\00:49:02.14 but what is being contrasted in this story 00:49:02.17\00:49:06.07 is the simple faith of a little maiden 00:49:06.11\00:49:09.74 versus the lack of faith of a king. 00:49:09.78\00:49:13.15 How many times have we come against 00:49:13.18\00:49:16.52 seemingly impossible odds 00:49:16.55\00:49:18.69 like mountains that you sang about, Rosemary, 00:49:18.72\00:49:23.02 impossible odds... impossible situations... 00:49:23.06\00:49:26.46 and we lost our faith and trust in God... 00:49:26.49\00:49:29.86 it's so easy to do. 00:49:29.90\00:49:31.27 Jehoram had asked the question, "Am I God?" 00:49:31.33\00:49:37.04 Certainly he was not... 00:49:37.07\00:49:38.97 nor was Elisha... 00:49:39.01\00:49:40.38 but Elisha was a man of God who would address the concerns 00:49:40.41\00:49:45.01 expressed by the king of Syria and Naaman. 00:49:45.05\00:49:48.38 The real king in Israel was still Lord. 00:49:48.42\00:49:52.09 Elisha's message was passed on to Naaman 00:49:52.12\00:49:55.76 and so, Naaman ended up in front of 00:49:55.79\00:50:00.36 Elisha's house... 00:50:00.40\00:50:03.80 all his soldiers... his horses... 00:50:03.83\00:50:08.37 his chariots... 00:50:08.40\00:50:09.74 it was an imposing... 00:50:09.77\00:50:11.84 I mean, retinue of people. 00:50:11.87\00:50:14.44 It's like seeing a presidential motorcade... 00:50:14.48\00:50:18.11 if you've ever seen one of those... 00:50:18.15\00:50:20.65 it stops all traffic, I'll tell you that. 00:50:20.68\00:50:23.02 You can take the freeways of LA 00:50:23.05\00:50:26.35 and they'll be emptied to allow that motorcade through. 00:50:26.39\00:50:31.89 Every... every on and off ramp will have an Officer... 00:50:31.93\00:50:37.40 a police car blocking the way 00:50:37.43\00:50:39.40 so that that motorcade pshhh... goes through. 00:50:39.43\00:50:41.80 This was Captain Naaman. 00:50:41.87\00:50:45.24 Well, time is flying here 00:50:45.27\00:50:48.58 but Naaman was slighted by what happened next, 00:50:48.61\00:50:55.35 he didn't like it. 00:50:55.38\00:50:57.32 So Naaman came with his horses and his chariots 00:50:57.35\00:51:00.69 and stood at the door of Elisha's house 00:51:00.72\00:51:03.19 and Elisha sent a messenger to him, 00:51:03.22\00:51:05.69 That was an affront to Naaman. 00:51:05.73\00:51:09.80 Elisha didn't come out himself and greet him, 00:51:09.83\00:51:13.94 after all, don't you know, this is... this is Naaman 00:51:13.97\00:51:17.27 and you didn't come out to see me? 00:51:17.31\00:51:21.18 Instead you sent a servant, ah, 00:51:21.21\00:51:24.98 and he says, "Go and wash in the Jordan seven times 00:51:25.01\00:51:28.82 and your flesh will be restored 00:51:28.85\00:51:30.82 and you'll be clean. " 00:51:30.85\00:51:32.19 Naaman was angry and went away saying, 00:51:32.22\00:51:37.36 "Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me 00:51:37.39\00:51:40.96 and stand and call on the name of the Lord 00:51:41.00\00:51:43.37 and wave his hand over the place and... and cure me... " 00:51:43.40\00:51:46.74 okay, 00:51:46.77\00:51:48.34 he didn't like the choice of river... 00:51:48.37\00:51:51.91 I mean, he says, "Damascus has nicer rivers 00:51:51.94\00:51:55.44 than this yucky Jordan mess... 00:51:55.48\00:51:58.45 why do I have to dip in that river 00:51:58.48\00:52:00.72 when I've got better ones over here?" 00:52:00.75\00:52:02.82 And so he left in a rage. 00:52:02.85\00:52:05.55 He felt slighted. 00:52:05.59\00:52:08.32 And so we find out 00:52:08.36\00:52:10.99 that Captain Naaman needed healing 00:52:11.03\00:52:15.56 from something far more than leprosy. 00:52:15.60\00:52:20.04 Captain Naaman needed the healing from pride, okay. 00:52:20.10\00:52:27.88 So, he was... he was upset... that's an understatement. 00:52:27.91\00:52:35.68 Naaman' s pride was the main reason for his rage 00:52:35.72\00:52:39.85 by this treatment by Elisha 00:52:39.89\00:52:42.72 and about the remedy described by the prophet. 00:52:42.76\00:52:45.83 Naaman wished to be treated like a great man 00:52:45.86\00:52:48.83 that happened to be a leper. 00:52:48.86\00:52:51.00 Elisha treated him like a leper that happened to be a great man. 00:52:51.03\00:52:56.30 Elisha was more concerned about Naaman' s disease 00:52:56.34\00:53:00.34 than his dignity 00:53:00.38\00:53:02.28 but Naaman in his pride 00:53:02.31\00:53:04.98 was more concerned about his dignity than his cure. 00:53:05.01\00:53:08.72 Sinful man will never come to salvation 00:53:08.75\00:53:13.49 until he becomes more concerned about his sin 00:53:13.52\00:53:16.16 than his earthly status. 00:53:16.19\00:53:18.36 Naaman in his pride also thought more of his idea for his cure 00:53:18.39\00:53:24.03 than he did of God's plan 00:53:24.07\00:53:26.23 but God says, "My thoughts are not your thoughts 00:53:26.27\00:53:31.34 neither are My ways your ways, says the Lord. " 00:53:31.37\00:53:36.41 Salvation is God's plan not ours. 00:53:36.44\00:53:39.85 Naaman' s plan may have carried authority on the field of battle 00:53:39.88\00:53:44.45 but a prescription for leprosy... 00:53:44.49\00:53:48.32 he was out of his jurisdiction, okay. 00:53:48.36\00:53:52.29 Just as it was that a little slave girl 00:53:52.33\00:53:56.23 reached out to help her master, 00:53:56.26\00:53:59.10 so once again, it was a servant 00:53:59.13\00:54:01.90 who came to Captain Naaman to rescue him, okay. 00:54:01.94\00:54:08.08 Piano playing. 00:54:08.11\00:54:10.41 Verses 11 and 12 start out with anger and end with rage. 00:54:10.45\00:54:19.65 Verse 14 ends with "clean" 00:54:19.69\00:54:25.96 isn't that something? 00:54:25.99\00:54:28.03 Never would have thought of that, 00:54:28.06\00:54:30.40 often the conflict waged in the soul is worse 00:54:30.43\00:54:36.24 just before peace is found, 00:54:36.27\00:54:38.57 just as the demon-possessed child 00:54:38.61\00:54:41.11 who had been brought to Jesus, 00:54:41.14\00:54:43.55 the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him, 00:54:43.58\00:54:46.61 Luke chapter 9, 00:54:46.65\00:54:48.15 it was the last-ditch effort of Satan to prevent the healing 00:54:48.18\00:54:52.82 and so the rage of Naaman can be seen 00:54:52.85\00:54:56.62 as the last-ditch effort of Satan 00:54:56.66\00:55:00.16 to keep him from being healed and more importantly 00:55:00.20\00:55:04.50 from being converted from paganism 00:55:04.53\00:55:07.00 to the worship of Jehovah, 00:55:07.04\00:55:10.24 so it says his servants came near and said to him, 00:55:10.27\00:55:13.71 "My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; 00:55:13.74\00:55:18.88 why don't you do it? 00:55:18.91\00:55:20.72 He's actually said to you, 'Wash, and be clean. '" 00:55:20.75\00:55:26.99 What about us? 00:55:27.02\00:55:30.03 God speaks to us 00:55:30.06\00:55:32.89 in our unreasonable rages 00:55:32.93\00:55:37.10 and He says, "It's such a simple thing, 00:55:37.13\00:55:42.40 accept my offer... learn of me... 00:55:42.44\00:55:48.74 I'm simple in heart... 00:55:48.78\00:55:51.55 and you'll find peace for your soul. " 00:55:51.58\00:55:55.98 Pause. 00:55:56.02\00:55:58.82 And so he went down 00:55:58.85\00:56:00.22 and he dipped himself seven times in the Jordan 00:56:00.26\00:56:04.93 according to the Word of the man of God 00:56:04.96\00:56:09.73 "and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child 00:56:09.76\00:56:16.30 and he was clean. " 00:56:16.34\00:56:19.41 Audience: Amen. 00:56:19.44\00:56:22.48 Isn't that something? 00:56:22.54\00:56:23.91 Now that's a story worth pondering. 00:56:23.95\00:56:28.48 Let's pray. 00:56:28.52\00:56:30.65 "Father in heaven, 00:56:30.69\00:56:33.76 we are lepers... 00:56:33.79\00:56:36.79 defiled... grotesque... impure... unclean, 00:56:36.83\00:56:46.57 hopeless... 00:56:46.60\00:56:48.94 pause 00:56:48.97\00:56:51.24 thank you that you provided us a Savior 00:56:51.27\00:56:56.61 and it's without money or price. 00:56:56.64\00:57:01.42 We didn't have to come up with astronomical amounts of gold 00:57:01.45\00:57:07.56 and silver and ten changes of clothing 00:57:07.59\00:57:10.76 to pay for our healing, 00:57:10.79\00:57:14.36 instead, we just needed to accept your offer. 00:57:14.40\00:57:19.97 Thank you so much, 00:57:20.00\00:57:23.00 in Jesus' name and for Your glory, 00:57:23.04\00:57:26.47 amen and amen. " 00:57:26.51\00:57:30.15
