Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:00:36.66\00:00:39.59 My Father in heaven, 00:00:39.62\00:00:40.65 what a joy it is to be in Your presence 00:00:40.68\00:00:43.98 and how wonderful it is 00:00:44.01\00:00:45.41 to be able to open Your Holy Book 00:00:45.44\00:00:47.09 knowing that with certainty 00:00:47.12\00:00:50.48 we can know exactly 00:00:50.51\00:00:52.27 what is gonna take place very, very soon. 00:00:52.30\00:00:55.44 And we ask that as we study 00:00:55.47\00:00:57.25 about the Prophetic Elijah the New Testament Elijah 00:00:57.28\00:01:00.91 that Your Holy Spirit will be with us 00:01:00.94\00:01:02.57 to instruct us give us understanding. 00:01:02.60\00:01:06.34 And Lord, I ask that 00:01:06.37\00:01:08.13 as we study the New Testament Elijah 00:01:08.16\00:01:10.61 that You'll help these lessons to find lodging in our minds 00:01:10.64\00:01:14.71 because in the last two presentations 00:01:14.74\00:01:17.00 we're going to need the information 00:01:17.03\00:01:19.59 that we study today. 00:01:19.62\00:01:21.27 So give us clarity of thought 00:01:21.30\00:01:23.37 and we thank You for hearing our prayer 00:01:23.40\00:01:25.16 for we ask in the precious name 00:01:25.19\00:01:26.66 of your beloved Son Jesus, amen. 00:01:26.69\00:01:29.27 The Old Testament is really an open book. 00:01:32.33\00:01:39.59 In other words the Old Testament ends in expectancy. 00:01:39.62\00:01:44.43 The Old Testament never actually comes to an end. 00:01:44.46\00:01:50.31 I'd like to begin our study by turning in my Bible 00:01:50.34\00:01:54.54 and I invite you to turn in your's 00:01:54.57\00:01:56.30 to the Book of Malachi 00:01:56.33\00:01:58.39 the last book of the Old Testament 4:5, 6. 00:01:58.42\00:02:05.02 And you're gonna understand 00:02:05.05\00:02:06.13 what I mean when I say 00:02:06.16\00:02:07.19 that the Old Testament is not a closed book, 00:02:07.22\00:02:09.78 because the Old Testament ends in expectancy. 00:02:09.81\00:02:13.38 It's expecting somebody to come 00:02:13.41\00:02:16.28 to prepare the way for the Messiah. 00:02:16.31\00:02:19.49 It says they're in Malachi 4:5, 6 00:02:19.52\00:02:24.68 "Behold, I will send your Elijah the prophet 00:02:24.71\00:02:30.95 before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 00:02:30.98\00:02:35.89 And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, 00:02:35.92\00:02:39.36 and the hearts of the children to their fathers, 00:02:39.39\00:02:42.18 lest I come and strike the earth with a curse." 00:02:42.21\00:02:47.12 Now these versus were actually written 00:02:47.15\00:02:50.92 over 300 years after Elijah was translated to heaven. 00:02:50.95\00:02:57.48 And so that we find here 300 years after Elijah 00:02:57.51\00:03:01.73 was taken to heaven that God is predicting 00:03:01.76\00:03:04.96 that a messenger will arise whose name is Elijah 00:03:04.99\00:03:10.41 and he will prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. 00:03:10.44\00:03:15.42 In other words, we are to expect another coming of Elijah. 00:03:15.45\00:03:20.19 And that's the reason in our first study together 00:03:20.22\00:03:23.15 we dedicated so much time to study the historical Elijah. 00:03:23.18\00:03:27.42 Simply because the historical Elijah 00:03:27.45\00:03:29.83 is the foundation for understanding 00:03:29.86\00:03:33.09 the New Testament Elijah or the Prophetic Elijah 00:03:33.12\00:03:36.35 as well as the Apocalyptic Elijah 00:03:36.38\00:03:39.60 or the end time Elijah. 00:03:39.63\00:03:42.93 Now this means 00:03:42.96\00:03:44.27 that the Old Testament is actually saying 00:03:44.30\00:03:47.04 that we should expect Elijah to arise 00:03:47.07\00:03:51.43 before the coming of the Messiah. 00:03:51.46\00:03:54.81 Now today we're gonna study about the New Testament Elijah. 00:03:54.84\00:03:58.22 You see they are three Elijah's in scripture 00:03:58.25\00:04:00.75 we studied in our last lecture the Historical Elijah. 00:04:00.78\00:04:04.19 Today we're gonna study the New Testament Elijah 00:04:04.22\00:04:06.90 and in our next two topics 00:04:06.93\00:04:08.66 we're going to deal 00:04:08.69\00:04:09.73 with the Apocalyptic or the end time Elijah. 00:04:09.76\00:04:13.49 Now the question is who is the New Testament Elijah 00:04:13.52\00:04:17.43 who prepared the way for the coming of the Messiah? 00:04:17.46\00:04:21.22 Well, we have three passages in the New Testament 00:04:21.25\00:04:25.28 actually in the gospels that I would like to read 00:04:25.31\00:04:28.62 which show who the New Testament Elijah was. 00:04:28.65\00:04:33.05 The first of them is found in the Gospel of Luke 1:17. 00:04:33.08\00:04:40.17 Luke 1:17. 00:04:40.20\00:04:44.57 It says here he that is the Elijah 00:04:44.60\00:04:49.97 that is prophesied in Malachi Chapter 4. 00:04:50.00\00:04:53.01 "He will also go before Him" 00:04:53.04\00:04:56.72 that is before the Messiah 00:04:56.75\00:04:59.22 "in the spirit and power of Elijah, 00:04:59.25\00:05:03.55 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' 00:05:03.58\00:05:06.92 and disobedient to the wisdom of the just, 00:05:06.95\00:05:09.75 to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 00:05:09.78\00:05:13.50 So, you will notice in Luke 1:17 00:05:13.53\00:05:15.92 and by the way, if you look at the previous verses 00:05:15.95\00:05:18.17 you'll notice that the angel is speaking to Zacharias 00:05:18.20\00:05:21.61 the father of John the Baptist. 00:05:21.64\00:05:23.99 You'll notice here that the son of Zacharias, 00:05:24.02\00:05:29.06 John the Baptist was going to go before the Messiah 00:05:29.09\00:05:33.99 in the spirit and power of Elijah 00:05:34.02\00:05:37.15 to prepare the way for the Lord 00:05:37.18\00:05:40.18 or to prepare the way for the Messiah. 00:05:40.21\00:05:43.01 This is the first verse in the New Testament 00:05:43.04\00:05:45.31 which actually tells us 00:05:45.34\00:05:47.69 that Elijah was going to be John the Baptist. 00:05:47.72\00:05:53.45 Now there's another passage 00:05:53.48\00:05:54.69 that I would like us to take a look at 00:05:54.72\00:05:56.38 and that is Matthew 17:10-13. 00:05:56.41\00:06:01.12 Matthew 17:10-13. 00:06:01.15\00:06:05.23 Once again we find Jesus 00:06:05.26\00:06:08.00 identifying John the Baptist as the New Testament Elijah. 00:06:08.03\00:06:12.77 It says there, in Matthew 17:10 00:06:12.80\00:06:16.09 "And His disciples asked Him, saying, 00:06:16.12\00:06:20.46 'Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?'" 00:06:20.49\00:06:26.04 In other words, why do the scribes say 00:06:26.07\00:06:27.77 that Elijah must come before the Messiah comes? 00:06:27.80\00:06:31.68 And now notice the words of Jesus in verse 11 00:06:31.71\00:06:35.73 "Jesus answered and said to them, 00:06:35.76\00:06:38.79 'Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things. 00:06:38.82\00:06:45.61 But I say to you that Elijah has come already, 00:06:45.64\00:06:50.99 and they did not know him 00:06:51.02\00:06:53.28 but did to him whatever they wished. 00:06:53.31\00:06:56.61 Likewise the Son of Man 00:06:56.64\00:06:58.90 is also about to suffer at their hands.'" 00:06:58.93\00:07:03.02 And then notice verse 13. 00:07:03.05\00:07:05.04 Who was Jesus talking about 00:07:05.07\00:07:06.80 when He said that Elijah had already come? 00:07:06.83\00:07:11.65 Verse 13 says "Then the disciples understood 00:07:11.68\00:07:17.06 that He spoke to them of John the Baptist." 00:07:17.09\00:07:22.38 Very clearly Jesus believe 00:07:22.41\00:07:25.47 that John the Baptist was the New Testament Elijah 00:07:25.50\00:07:29.32 not only because in the Gospel of Luke 00:07:29.35\00:07:32.72 he was announced to Zacharias 00:07:32.75\00:07:34.93 as he would prepare the way from the Messiah 00:07:34.96\00:07:37.89 but because Jesus here actually said 00:07:37.92\00:07:41.14 the John the Baptist was the New Testament Elijah. 00:07:41.17\00:07:45.87 The third passage that I would like us to notice 00:07:45.90\00:07:48.44 where Jesus identifies John the Baptist 00:07:48.47\00:07:51.79 as the New Testament Elijah is found in Matthew 11:11-14. 00:07:51.82\00:07:58.37 Matthew 11:11-14. 00:07:58.40\00:08:03.73 Here Jesus says the following. 00:08:03.76\00:08:06.05 "Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women 00:08:06.08\00:08:12.30 there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist, 00:08:12.33\00:08:17.40 but he who is least 00:08:17.43\00:08:19.02 in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 00:08:19.05\00:08:22.59 And from the days of John the Baptist 00:08:22.62\00:08:25.08 until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, 00:08:25.11\00:08:29.02 and the violent take it by force. 00:08:29.05\00:08:31.89 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John." 00:08:31.92\00:08:37.90 And notice what Jesus says. 00:08:37.93\00:08:40.11 "And if you are willing to receive it, 00:08:40.14\00:08:43.23 he is Elijah who is to come." 00:08:43.26\00:08:48.78 Notice that Jesus clearly identifies John the Baptist 00:08:48.81\00:08:52.72 as Elijah in Matthew 11:14. 00:08:52.75\00:08:59.05 He also identifies John the Baptist as Elijah 00:08:59.08\00:09:03.47 in Matthew 17:10-13 and Luke Chapter 1 00:09:03.50\00:09:09.77 in speaking Zacharias identifies 00:09:09.80\00:09:12.80 John the Baptist as Elijah as well. 00:09:12.83\00:09:17.40 Now, I must make a point of clarification 00:09:17.43\00:09:19.43 and that he is that John the Baptist 00:09:19.46\00:09:21.23 was not literally Elijah. 00:09:21.26\00:09:24.49 In other words he was not Elijah in person. 00:09:24.52\00:09:27.61 You see, the Pharisees believed in that type of reincarnation 00:09:27.64\00:09:32.37 and in the Gospel of John, 00:09:32.40\00:09:34.23 you know, they ask John the Baptist are you Elijah? 00:09:34.26\00:09:39.35 And John the Baptist says no, I'm not Elijah. 00:09:39.38\00:09:43.69 So you say there's a contradiction in the Bible 00:09:43.72\00:09:45.76 because Jesus says that John the Baptist is Elijah 00:09:45.79\00:09:49.14 and John the Baptist says I'm not Elijah. 00:09:49.17\00:09:51.92 Well, there's no contradiction. 00:09:51.95\00:09:53.40 They're coming from to different angles. 00:09:53.43\00:09:56.51 You say in John Chapter 1, 00:09:56.54\00:09:58.90 John knows that those who are asking 00:09:58.93\00:10:01.12 him the question are asking 00:10:01.15\00:10:02.89 whether he is literally and personally Elijah 00:10:02.92\00:10:06.21 and he says in that sense I am not Elijah. 00:10:06.24\00:10:10.28 Jesus says that he John would come 00:10:10.31\00:10:14.44 in the spirit and power of Elijah. 00:10:14.47\00:10:17.43 In other words John the Baptist 00:10:17.46\00:10:19.07 was not Elijah reincarnated, 00:10:19.10\00:10:22.28 he was not Elijah in person 00:10:22.31\00:10:24.55 but he came with the same spirit and power of the Elijah 00:10:24.58\00:10:27.78 to perform the same kind of work 00:10:27.81\00:10:30.13 that Elijah performed in the Old Testament. 00:10:30.16\00:10:33.86 Now what was the mission of the New Testament Elijah? 00:10:33.89\00:10:37.65 If you remember in our last lecture 00:10:37.68\00:10:40.09 we noticed that Elijah the prophet 00:10:40.12\00:10:42.13 the historical Elijah was sent to an apostate Israel 00:10:42.16\00:10:46.62 to bring them back to the Lord. 00:10:46.65\00:10:48.88 He was not sent to the Palestinians 00:10:48.91\00:10:50.97 he was not sent to the Babylonians 00:10:51.00\00:10:52.70 he was not sent to the Egyptians 00:10:52.73\00:10:54.78 his mission was directly related to the people of God 00:10:54.81\00:10:59.09 they were in apostasy and the purpose 00:10:59.12\00:11:01.63 of the Old Testament Elijah was to bring 00:11:01.66\00:11:04.06 God's professed people back to the Lord. 00:11:04.09\00:11:08.24 Well, the New Testament Elijah has the same purpose. 00:11:08.27\00:11:12.36 In fact, when Jesus came to this world the Bible tells us 00:11:12.39\00:11:16.70 that the Jewish nation was in apostasy. 00:11:16.73\00:11:19.99 The problem was not idolatry at this point it was legalism. 00:11:20.02\00:11:23.89 They believe that they could work their way to heaven. 00:11:23.92\00:11:27.00 In fact, we find Jesus constantly rebuking 00:11:27.03\00:11:30.41 this self-centered spirit 00:11:30.44\00:11:32.82 the idea that you could work your way to heaven. 00:11:32.85\00:11:36.77 And so in the Old Testament the problem was idolatry 00:11:36.80\00:11:40.61 in the New Testament the problem was legalism. 00:11:40.64\00:11:43.45 But Israel was still in apostasy 00:11:43.48\00:11:46.30 when John the Baptist came to perform his mission. 00:11:46.33\00:11:50.32 Now I want to read several texts from the New Testament 00:11:50.35\00:11:53.30 which show what the mission and purpose 00:11:53.33\00:11:56.76 of the New Testament Elijah was. 00:11:56.79\00:11:59.23 And I've read some of these before 00:11:59.26\00:12:01.18 but I want to read them again 00:12:01.21\00:12:03.35 because I want to focus 00:12:03.38\00:12:04.86 on the specific purpose for his mission. 00:12:04.89\00:12:08.10 Notice once again Luke 1 00:12:08.13\00:12:10.48 and we'll also read besides verse 17 00:12:10.51\00:12:13.16 which we read before we'll read verse 16. 00:12:13.19\00:12:16.40 Luke 1:16 this is speaking about the mission 00:12:16.43\00:12:22.31 of John the Baptist. 00:12:22.34\00:12:23.90 It says here "And he will turn 00:12:23.93\00:12:29.46 many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God." 00:12:29.49\00:12:35.42 Who was he gonna turn to Lord their God? Israel. 00:12:35.45\00:12:39.21 Not the pagans, not the secular people, 00:12:39.24\00:12:42.65 not the worldly people his mission is targeted 00:12:42.68\00:12:46.91 to those who professed to serve the Lord. 00:12:46.94\00:12:49.79 Could we say Christians? 00:12:49.82\00:12:53.33 So it says and he will turn many of the children of Israel 00:12:53.36\00:12:56.92 to the Lord their God. 00:12:56.95\00:12:57.98 If they make me turning to the Lord their God 00:12:58.01\00:13:00.65 it must be that they have gone astray 00:13:00.68\00:13:03.50 from the Lord their God. 00:13:03.53\00:13:05.59 And so once again we noticed 00:13:05.62\00:13:07.05 that the mission of the New Testament Elijah 00:13:07.08\00:13:09.59 is to bring God's people who are in apostasy 00:13:09.62\00:13:12.69 back to the Lord. 00:13:12.72\00:13:14.57 I emphasize this point time and again 00:13:14.60\00:13:16.96 because when we study about the Apocalyptic Elijah 00:13:16.99\00:13:20.04 we're gonna notice that the final Elijah message 00:13:20.07\00:13:22.97 is targeted especially to the Christian world. 00:13:23.00\00:13:26.63 In the Old Testament Elijah presented his message to Israel 00:13:26.66\00:13:31.25 not to the pagan nations. 00:13:31.28\00:13:32.86 The New Testament Elijah presents his message to Israel. 00:13:32.89\00:13:36.87 And we're gonna notice at the end of time 00:13:36.90\00:13:38.64 that the end time Elijah 00:13:38.67\00:13:40.41 which is really a movement as we're gonna noticed 00:13:40.44\00:13:43.11 not one individual is going to present his message 00:13:43.14\00:13:46.61 not to literally Israel but to spiritual Israel. 00:13:46.64\00:13:50.68 Notice Luke 1:17 about the roll of this New Testament Elijah. 00:13:50.71\00:13:58.22 It says there and we've read it before 00:13:58.25\00:13:59.95 at the beginning of our study this evening. 00:13:59.98\00:14:02.15 "He will also go before him" 00:14:02.18\00:14:05.54 that is the Elijah will go before the Messiah 00:14:05.57\00:14:10.78 "in the spirit and power of Elijah." 00:14:10.81\00:14:14.21 And now notice what the purpose is. 00:14:14.24\00:14:16.17 "To turn the hearts 00:14:16.20\00:14:17.55 of the fathers to their children" 00:14:17.58\00:14:19.88 and now notice this 00:14:19.91\00:14:21.43 "and disobedient to the wisdom of the just." 00:14:21.46\00:14:26.87 Is the message of the New Testament Elijah 00:14:26.90\00:14:28.94 a message of leading people into obedience? Yes. 00:14:28.97\00:14:33.71 Obedience to what? 00:14:33.74\00:14:35.47 Obedience to God's law, 00:14:35.50\00:14:38.89 obedience to God's regulations, if you please. 00:14:38.92\00:14:42.70 And so it says 00:14:42.73\00:14:44.14 "and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just," 00:14:44.17\00:14:47.04 and then notice this "to make ready a people 00:14:47.07\00:14:50.88 prepared for the Lord." 00:14:50.91\00:14:52.74 So the purpose of this New Testament Elijah 00:14:52.77\00:14:56.22 as well as the Old Testament Elijah 00:14:56.25\00:14:58.55 is to bring God's people back to the Lord 00:14:58.58\00:15:01.65 so that when the Messiah comes 00:15:01.68\00:15:03.67 they will be ready and prepare-- 00:15:03.70\00:15:06.11 prepared to receive the Messiah. 00:15:06.14\00:15:09.68 Notice also Matthew 11:10 00:15:09.71\00:15:12.99 which we read before. 00:15:13.02\00:15:14.20 But now I want to underline one particular aspect of this. 00:15:14.23\00:15:18.62 Matthew 11:10 "For this is he of whom 00:15:18.65\00:15:24.11 it is written 'Behold, 00:15:24.14\00:15:26.69 I sent My messenger before your face, 00:15:26.72\00:15:31.00 who will'" what? 00:15:31.03\00:15:32.57 "Who will prepare Your way before Him." 00:15:32.60\00:15:37.47 In other words, He is the one 00:15:37.50\00:15:39.74 who comes before the Messiah 00:15:39.77\00:15:41.74 to prepare the way of the Messiah 00:15:41.77\00:15:43.96 so the when Messiah comes 00:15:43.99\00:15:45.69 the people will be ready to receive Him. 00:15:45.72\00:15:49.68 Now notice also Luke 3:4, 5. 00:15:49.71\00:15:53.77 I'm reading all of these versus 00:15:53.80\00:15:55.22 because the thought comes through 00:15:55.25\00:15:56.71 time and time again. 00:15:56.74\00:15:59.13 The role of Elijah is to prepare the way for the Messiah 00:15:59.16\00:16:03.80 to leads God's people away from apostasy 00:16:03.83\00:16:06.74 so that they're ready when the Messiah comes. 00:16:06.77\00:16:09.94 And in this case, it's the first coming of the Messiah 00:16:09.97\00:16:13.37 not the second coming of the Messiah. 00:16:13.40\00:16:15.44 We'll talk about the second coming of the Messiah 00:16:15.47\00:16:17.72 and the Elijah which prepares the way 00:16:17.75\00:16:20.08 in our last two lectures in this series. 00:16:20.11\00:16:23.65 Luke 3:4, 5 00:16:23.68\00:16:27.52 "As it is written in the book 00:16:27.55\00:16:29.44 of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, 00:16:29.47\00:16:33.20 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 00:16:33.23\00:16:36.91 prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight. 00:16:36.94\00:16:44.05 Every valley shall be filled 00:16:44.08\00:16:46.36 and every mountain and hill brought low, 00:16:46.39\00:16:50.60 the crooked places shall be made straight 00:16:50.63\00:16:53.36 and the rough ways smooth. 00:16:53.39\00:16:56.08 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" 00:16:56.11\00:17:00.61 Now what kind of talk is this, 00:17:00.64\00:17:02.82 where it says make his past straight feeling valleys, 00:17:02.85\00:17:09.23 mountains being brought low, 00:17:09.26\00:17:11.51 crooked places made straight, rough ways made smooth. 00:17:11.54\00:17:15.57 What is Luke trying to tell us here? 00:17:15.60\00:17:18.86 Well, actually it's very interesting to notice 00:17:18.89\00:17:23.04 that this is really symbolism 00:17:23.07\00:17:24.99 that deals with preparing the characters of people 00:17:25.02\00:17:28.83 for the coming of the Messiah. 00:17:28.86\00:17:30.42 Allow me to read you a couple of statements 00:17:30.45\00:17:32.81 one of them is from that classic biography of Christ, 00:17:32.84\00:17:35.80 the Desire of Ages page, 135 00:17:35.83\00:17:38.92 where Ellen White is commenting about 00:17:38.95\00:17:41.44 what these expressions mean. 00:17:41.47\00:17:43.55 She says this, "Anciently, 00:17:43.58\00:17:46.99 when the King journeyed 00:17:47.02\00:17:48.73 through the less frequented parts of his dominion, 00:17:48.76\00:17:52.61 accompany of men was sent ahead of the royal chariot 00:17:52.64\00:17:57.62 to level the steep places and to fill up the hollows, 00:17:57.65\00:18:02.87 that that kid might travel in safety 00:18:02.90\00:18:05.36 and without hindrance. 00:18:05.39\00:18:07.58 This custom is employed by the prophet 00:18:07.61\00:18:10.85 to illustrate the work of the gospel." 00:18:10.88\00:18:14.31 In other words, the literal filling 00:18:14.34\00:18:16.14 in of the holes on the road 00:18:16.17\00:18:18.21 and the making low of the bumps on the road 00:18:18.24\00:18:21.17 represents the preparation of the character 00:18:21.20\00:18:24.77 to receive the Messiah. 00:18:24.80\00:18:26.88 In the book God's Amazing Grace, page 249 00:18:26.91\00:18:31.42 we find this statement which illustrates 00:18:31.45\00:18:34.37 what these expressions mean 00:18:34.40\00:18:36.25 making straight the paths 00:18:36.28\00:18:37.91 and filling in the holes and brain bringing 00:18:37.94\00:18:40.31 the mountains down or the hills down. 00:18:40.34\00:18:42.92 Notice what the author says in this devotional book, 00:18:42.95\00:18:45.85 God's Amazing Grace, page 249. 00:18:45.88\00:18:49.60 "The work of reformation here brought to view by John, 00:18:49.63\00:18:55.28 the purging of heart and mind and soul 00:18:55.31\00:18:59.77 is one that is needed by many 00:18:59.80\00:19:02.26 who today profess to have the faith of Christ." 00:19:02.29\00:19:06.14 Notice once again the idea that the message is given to those 00:19:06.17\00:19:09.34 who profess faith in Christ. 00:19:09.37\00:19:11.59 She continues saying 00:19:11.62\00:19:13.11 "Wrong practices that have been indulged in 00:19:13.14\00:19:19.86 need to be put away. 00:19:19.89\00:19:22.15 The crooked paths need to be made straight 00:19:22.18\00:19:25.84 and the rough places smooth. 00:19:25.87\00:19:28.76 The mountains and hills of self-esteem and pride 00:19:28.79\00:19:34.05 need to be brought low. 00:19:34.08\00:19:36.06 There is need of bringing forth 'fruits meet for repentance' 00:19:36.09\00:19:40.87 when this work is done 00:19:40.90\00:19:43.12 in the experience of God's believing people, 00:19:43.15\00:19:46.29 'all flesh shall see the salvation of the Lord.'" 00:19:46.32\00:19:50.67 So this work which is described in symbolic language 00:19:50.70\00:19:53.89 means hammering out a character 00:19:53.92\00:19:57.31 which will be ready for the coming of the Messiah. 00:19:57.34\00:20:01.20 Something I didn't mention last night 00:20:01.23\00:20:02.97 is actually the work of reform 00:20:03.00\00:20:05.45 of the historical Elijah had the purpose 00:20:05.48\00:20:08.21 of preparing the people for the ministry 00:20:08.24\00:20:10.43 of the prophet Elijah. 00:20:10.46\00:20:12.74 That's a whole different sermon in itself 00:20:12.77\00:20:14.82 to talk about how that work 00:20:14.85\00:20:17.26 that Elijah performed actually prepared 00:20:17.29\00:20:20.10 the way for the great work of restoration 00:20:20.13\00:20:23.47 which was made by the prophet Elijah. 00:20:23.50\00:20:25.73 In this case the preparation 00:20:25.76\00:20:27.75 by John the Baptist of smoothing 00:20:27.78\00:20:30.97 of the character so to speak 00:20:31.00\00:20:33.11 so that people would be ready 00:20:33.14\00:20:34.78 to receive the Messiah 00:20:34.81\00:20:36.07 is illustrated by the historical Elijah. 00:20:36.10\00:20:39.81 Notice also Matthew 17:11 00:20:39.84\00:20:43.03 and the role of the New Testament Elijah. 00:20:43.06\00:20:46.27 Matthew 17:11, 00:20:46.30\00:20:50.20 "Jesus answered and said to them, 00:20:50.23\00:20:53.29 'Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will'" what? 00:20:53.32\00:20:59.83 "He will restore all things." 00:20:59.86\00:21:03.30 Now let me ask you what does the word restore means? 00:21:03.33\00:21:06.84 It means bringing something totally new 00:21:06.87\00:21:08.92 that nobody knew before, right. 00:21:08.95\00:21:10.91 Of course, not, restore means to bring back. 00:21:10.94\00:21:15.86 Obviously people had gone astray 00:21:15.89\00:21:18.51 and therefore it's necessary to restore 00:21:18.54\00:21:21.48 that which people had forgotten. 00:21:21.51\00:21:23.55 In other words the purpose of John the Baptist 00:21:23.58\00:21:26.21 was to bring the attention of people to the prophecies 00:21:26.24\00:21:28.99 of the Old Testament about the Messiah, 00:21:29.02\00:21:31.48 so that when the Messiah would come 00:21:31.51\00:21:33.32 the people would be prepared to receive Him. 00:21:33.35\00:21:37.06 Notice Matthew 3:1-3 00:21:37.09\00:21:40.56 here once again it speaks about the work 00:21:40.59\00:21:42.80 of reform of the New Testament Elijah 00:21:42.83\00:21:46.14 and we're dedicated a lot of time to talk 00:21:46.17\00:21:48.55 about the mission of this New Testament Elijah 00:21:48.58\00:21:51.96 with God's people preparing people 00:21:51.99\00:21:54.80 for the first coming of the Messiah, 00:21:54.83\00:21:56.66 so that they would receive Him with open arms. 00:21:56.69\00:22:00.08 Matthew 3:1-3, 00:22:00.11\00:22:02.19 speaks about the work of this New Testament Elijah. 00:22:02.22\00:22:05.71 "In those days John the Baptist came preaching 00:22:05.74\00:22:09.58 in the wilderness of Judea, and saying 'Repent.'" 00:22:09.61\00:22:15.64 Is that the message that the Old Testament Elijah gave? 00:22:15.67\00:22:18.65 Absolutely. 00:22:18.68\00:22:19.95 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 00:22:19.98\00:22:23.63 Of course, the kingdom of heaven was gonna be brought by Jesus. 00:22:23.66\00:22:27.15 Verse 3, "For this is he who was spoken 00:22:27.18\00:22:30.87 of by the prophet Isaiah, saying 00:22:30.90\00:22:33.12 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 00:22:33.15\00:22:36.37 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.'" 00:22:36.40\00:22:42.74 Now do you remember in our last study 00:22:42.77\00:22:45.70 that the historical Elijah restored 00:22:45.73\00:22:49.04 the covenant sacrifice on the altar? 00:22:49.07\00:22:52.82 Now I want to notice how John the Baptist 00:22:52.85\00:22:56.82 the New Testament Elijah presented Jesus. 00:22:56.85\00:22:59.89 John 1:29, you see the Jews had a series of sacrifices 00:22:59.92\00:23:05.64 that they offered but it was just a routine. 00:23:05.67\00:23:07.65 They didn't understand 00:23:07.68\00:23:08.71 what those sacrifices represented. 00:23:08.74\00:23:10.75 They did not understand 00:23:10.78\00:23:12.02 that all of those sacrifices represented 00:23:12.05\00:23:14.49 the death of the Messiah. 00:23:14.52\00:23:16.63 And so now John the Baptist 00:23:16.66\00:23:18.51 wants to bring the attention of the people 00:23:18.54\00:23:20.25 to the true sacrifice to Jesus 00:23:20.28\00:23:22.80 to whom all of those sacrifices pointed. 00:23:22.83\00:23:25.38 John sees Jesus coming. 00:23:25.41\00:23:30.01 It says there "The next day 00:23:30.04\00:23:32.10 John saw Jesus coming toward him, 00:23:32.13\00:23:34.43 and said, 'Behold! The Lamb of God 00:23:34.46\00:23:38.13 who takes away the sin of the world!'" 00:23:38.16\00:23:40.69 So about the Old Testament Elijah 00:23:40.72\00:23:42.47 and the New Testament Elijah restore the true gospel 00:23:42.50\00:23:46.26 of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for sin. 00:23:46.29\00:23:49.63 Both of them call an apostate people to repentance. 00:23:49.66\00:23:53.27 Both of them have the purpose of preparing of people 00:23:53.30\00:23:56.27 for the coming in the Old Testament of Elijah 00:23:56.30\00:23:59.40 and in the New Testament for the coming 00:23:59.43\00:24:01.28 of the Messiah Jesus Christ. 00:24:01.31\00:24:04.15 Now let me ask you, 00:24:04.18\00:24:05.41 did at the New Testament Elijah restore the commandments of God? 00:24:05.44\00:24:10.56 Did he actually live and die 00:24:10.59\00:24:14.70 because he was willing to take a stand 00:24:14.73\00:24:17.83 for the seventh commandment? 00:24:17.86\00:24:19.26 Absolutely. 00:24:19.29\00:24:20.61 In fact, notice Mark 6:18, Mark 6:18. 00:24:20.64\00:24:26.70 Do you know that the preaching 00:24:26.73\00:24:27.89 of the seventh commandment actually is 00:24:27.92\00:24:29.70 what led to the death of John the Baptist? 00:24:29.73\00:24:33.55 Notice what we find there Mark 6:18 00:24:33.58\00:24:37.40 "For John had said to Herod, 'It is not lawful.'" 00:24:37.43\00:24:43.88 That's an interesting word. 00:24:43.91\00:24:45.13 Did he preach the law? 00:24:45.16\00:24:46.65 He sure did. 00:24:46.68\00:24:47.90 "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." 00:24:47.93\00:24:53.45 And by the way that cost him his head 00:24:53.48\00:24:56.57 literally speaking not figuratively speaking. 00:24:56.60\00:25:00.70 Now John the Baptist also called the people to produce fruit. 00:25:00.73\00:25:04.60 He said repent 00:25:04.63\00:25:06.44 and repentance is shown by a change in the life. 00:25:06.47\00:25:09.94 Did the Old Testament Elijah call Israel 00:25:09.97\00:25:12.27 to have a change in their lives, 00:25:12.30\00:25:14.39 in their method of worship, 00:25:14.42\00:25:15.92 in their attitude towards the commandments, 00:25:15.95\00:25:18.17 in their attitudes toward God the Creator? 00:25:18.20\00:25:21.69 Absolutely. 00:25:21.72\00:25:22.75 The New Testament Elijah, 00:25:22.78\00:25:24.25 John the Baptist also call God's people to repent 00:25:24.28\00:25:28.50 and as a result of repentance to produce fruit. 00:25:28.53\00:25:31.85 Notice Matthew 3:8-10. 00:25:31.88\00:25:38.44 Matthew 3:8, 00:25:38.47\00:25:41.79 "Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, 00:25:41.82\00:25:46.86 and do not think to say to yourselves, 00:25:46.89\00:25:49.36 'We have Abraham as our father.' 00:25:49.39\00:25:52.68 For I say to you that God is able to raise up children 00:25:52.71\00:25:57.12 to Abraham from these stones. 00:25:57.15\00:26:00.32 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. 00:26:00.35\00:26:03.73 Therefore every tree which does not bear 00:26:03.76\00:26:07.78 good fruit is cut down and thrown in the fire." 00:26:07.81\00:26:13.28 Did John the Baptist preach the need 00:26:13.31\00:26:15.77 to have the fruit of the spirit in the life? 00:26:15.80\00:26:19.12 Of course. 00:26:19.15\00:26:20.34 He called the people to a sanctified to a holy life 00:26:20.37\00:26:24.40 just like the Old Testament Elijah did. 00:26:24.43\00:26:27.15 In fact, in John 15:8 00:26:27.18\00:26:31.25 we find Jesus saying some very interesting words. 00:26:31.28\00:26:34.20 John 15:8 "By this My Father is glorified, 00:26:34.23\00:26:40.03 that you bear" what? 00:26:40.06\00:26:42.46 "Much fruit, so you will be My disciples." 00:26:42.49\00:26:47.72 And so both the Old Testament Elijah 00:26:47.75\00:26:50.31 and the New Testament Elijah, John the Baptist call the people 00:26:50.34\00:26:53.63 to live a holy life to prepare a character 00:26:53.66\00:26:56.99 to receive the Messiah when He should come. 00:26:57.02\00:27:01.51 Now you remember that in the Old Testament Elijah 00:27:01.54\00:27:04.29 he preach a message of judgment. 00:27:04.32\00:27:06.78 When His message was joined by the fire from heaven 00:27:06.81\00:27:10.69 we find that there were only two groups, 00:27:10.72\00:27:13.82 there were the saved and lost. 00:27:13.85\00:27:16.11 Those who worship the true God 00:27:16.14\00:27:17.98 and those who chose to worship Baal. 00:27:18.01\00:27:21.02 Let me ask you. 00:27:21.05\00:27:22.08 Did John the Baptist preach a message of judgment 00:27:22.11\00:27:26.10 that there was going to be a separation 00:27:26.13\00:27:28.25 between the righteous and the unrighteous? 00:27:28.28\00:27:31.14 Absolutely. 00:27:31.17\00:27:32.39 Notice Matthew 3 and we'll read verse 10 00:27:32.42\00:27:37.51 and then we'll jump down to verse 12. 00:27:37.54\00:27:40.00 Matthew 3:10 and we also read verse 12. 00:27:40.03\00:27:44.58 And once again I want to remind you that 00:27:44.61\00:27:46.97 here he is speaking to those 00:27:47.00\00:27:48.46 who profess to serve the Lord. 00:27:48.49\00:27:50.01 He's not speaking to the Philistines, 00:27:50.04\00:27:51.65 he's not speaking to the Egyptians, 00:27:51.68\00:27:53.64 to the Babylonians or to any of those secular worldly people. 00:27:53.67\00:27:57.91 He is speaking of a separation 00:27:57.94\00:28:00.23 to take place among those 00:28:00.26\00:28:02.16 who profess to serve God. 00:28:02.19\00:28:04.37 Christians if you please. 00:28:04.40\00:28:06.52 It says in verse 10 00:28:06.55\00:28:08.11 "And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. 00:28:08.14\00:28:13.87 Therefore every tree which does not bear 00:28:13.90\00:28:17.41 good fruit is to cut down and thrown into the fire." 00:28:17.44\00:28:23.07 Let me ask you does a sanctified life 00:28:23.10\00:28:25.50 have anything to do with our standing of the judgment? 00:28:25.53\00:28:28.76 It most certainly does. 00:28:28.79\00:28:30.19 Some people say we're not saved by good works. 00:28:30.22\00:28:33.66 That's true but we won't be saved without good works either. 00:28:33.69\00:28:36.86 Because good works are an indication of true 00:28:36.89\00:28:40.68 and genuine faith, a true of acceptance of Jesus 00:28:40.71\00:28:43.87 and true repentance. 00:28:43.90\00:28:45.33 If there is true repentance 00:28:45.36\00:28:46.98 there will be fruit in life, the life will be different, 00:28:47.01\00:28:49.97 the life will be sanctified, the life will be holy. 00:28:50.00\00:28:54.04 Now notice what we find verse 12. 00:28:54.07\00:28:56.23 It says "His winnowing" this is speaking about the Messiah. 00:28:56.26\00:28:59.72 "His winnowing fan is in His hand." 00:28:59.75\00:29:02.24 Do you know what winnowing fan was? 00:29:02.27\00:29:04.79 Actually what they did is they would rub the grain 00:29:04.82\00:29:08.05 and then the covering of the grain would, 00:29:08.08\00:29:10.72 would fall off and then they would throw it up into the air 00:29:10.75\00:29:13.70 and somebody with a great big fan would blow it 00:29:13.73\00:29:16.05 and then all of the chap would blow away 00:29:16.08\00:29:18.56 and a grain of wheat would fall to the ground 00:29:18.59\00:29:20.28 that's a winnowing fan. 00:29:20.31\00:29:21.74 And so it say "His winnowing fan is in His hand, 00:29:21.77\00:29:25.87 and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, 00:29:25.90\00:29:30.51 and gather His wheat into the barn" see, 00:29:30.54\00:29:33.18 there you have the righteous 00:29:33.21\00:29:34.77 "will gather His wheat into the barn, 00:29:34.80\00:29:37.12 but He will burn up" the what? 00:29:37.15\00:29:39.17 "The chaff with unquenchable fire." 00:29:39.20\00:29:41.63 Did John the Baptist preach a message of separation 00:29:41.66\00:29:43.91 and judgment based on your acceptance 00:29:43.94\00:29:47.06 or rejection of the Messiah? 00:29:47.09\00:29:49.23 Absolutely. 00:29:49.26\00:29:51.50 Now we come to a very important juncture in our study. 00:29:51.53\00:29:56.18 Do you know that Elijah never appears in prophecy by himself? 00:29:56.21\00:30:02.94 Whenever Elijah appears 00:30:02.97\00:30:05.49 his three enemies appear with him. 00:30:05.52\00:30:09.61 This is where the study's gonna become 00:30:09.64\00:30:11.22 very, very interesting, you see. 00:30:11.25\00:30:12.95 People did not love the Old Testament Elijah. 00:30:12.98\00:30:16.80 See, he ended up in the wilderness. 00:30:16.83\00:30:19.96 People did not love the New Testament Elijah either. 00:30:19.99\00:30:23.39 He ended up where? 00:30:23.42\00:30:25.07 He ended up in dungeon, he ended up in prison 00:30:25.10\00:30:29.01 because his message was so direct, and so strong. 00:30:29.04\00:30:34.02 No political correctness, no beating around the bush, 00:30:34.05\00:30:37.15 just like the Old Testament Elijah 00:30:37.18\00:30:38.90 came in and said, 00:30:38.93\00:30:39.96 you are the man I have not trouble Israel. 00:30:39.99\00:30:43.03 The New Testament Elijah just as pointedly 00:30:43.06\00:30:45.39 said to the king it is not lawful for you 00:30:45.42\00:30:48.18 to have your brother's wife. 00:30:48.21\00:30:50.03 In other words both Elijah's preach a direct point of message 00:30:50.06\00:30:54.16 and when they do this there three enemies surface. 00:30:54.19\00:30:59.80 Now let's study about those three enemies 00:30:59.83\00:31:02.29 because whenever Elijah appears his three enemies appear, 00:31:02.32\00:31:05.63 which means that the New Testimony Elijah 00:31:05.66\00:31:08.50 must have three enemies like the Old Testament Elijah. 00:31:08.53\00:31:12.62 What were the enemies in the Old Testament? 00:31:12.65\00:31:15.36 Ahab the king, Jezebel harlot queen 00:31:15.39\00:31:20.32 and the prophets of Baal 00:31:20.35\00:31:22.26 they did the biddings of Jezebel 00:31:22.29\00:31:24.97 because they ate at Jezebel stable 00:31:25.00\00:31:27.78 according to what we studied in our last lecture. 00:31:27.81\00:31:30.73 Now go with me to Mark Chapter 6 00:31:30.76\00:31:33.25 and let's begin reading at verse 14. 00:31:33.28\00:31:37.14 At this time John the Baptist 00:31:37.17\00:31:39.44 the New Testament Elijah is in prison. 00:31:39.47\00:31:43.69 I want to notice how the story develops 00:31:43.72\00:31:45.91 the story of his martyrdom. 00:31:45.94\00:31:48.06 It says there in Mark 6:14. 00:31:48.09\00:31:52.11 "Now King Herod heard of Him" that of his Jesus. 00:31:52.14\00:31:56.24 "For His name had become well known. 00:31:56.27\00:31:59.14 And he said, 'John the Baptist is risen from the dead, 00:31:59.17\00:32:04.54 and therefore these powers are at work in him.'" 00:32:04.57\00:32:07.21 So he thought that Jesus was Elijah 00:32:07.24\00:32:09.72 or John the Baptist resurrected from the dead. 00:32:09.75\00:32:12.42 Verse 15 "Others said, 'It is Elijah.' 00:32:12.45\00:32:16.34 And others said, 'It is the Prophet, 00:32:16.37\00:32:19.01 or like one of the prophets.' 00:32:19.04\00:32:21.43 But when Herod heard, 00:32:21.46\00:32:23.14 he said, 'This is John, whom I beheaded, 00:32:23.17\00:32:27.18 he has been raised from the dead!'" 00:32:27.21\00:32:30.20 Let's go to verse 17. 00:32:30.23\00:32:33.23 Notice verse 17, why was John the Baptist in prison. 00:32:33.26\00:32:40.10 It says in verse 17 00:32:40.13\00:32:41.72 "For Herod" Herod was the king, right? 00:32:41.75\00:32:45.47 "He himself had sent and laid hold of John." 00:32:45.50\00:32:50.24 Who was the one who laid of John. 00:32:50.27\00:32:53.14 Herod the king. Why did he do it? 00:32:53.17\00:32:55.25 I guess he hated 00:32:55.28\00:32:56.36 the John the Baptist the king did right. 00:32:56.39\00:32:57.90 No. 00:32:57.93\00:32:59.35 It says "For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, 00:32:59.38\00:33:04.58 and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, 00:33:04.61\00:33:11.02 his brother Philip's wife, for he had married her." 00:33:11.05\00:33:17.22 Who was that wanted John the Baptist in prison? 00:33:17.25\00:33:20.40 Was that, was that the king, king Herod? 00:33:20.43\00:33:23.52 No. 00:33:23.55\00:33:24.58 Who was it? It was Herodias. 00:33:24.61\00:33:27.51 Let me ask you 00:33:27.54\00:33:28.60 was Herodias according to the biblical definition 00:33:28.63\00:33:32.04 on adulterous woman? 00:33:32.07\00:33:34.36 Yes, she was. 00:33:34.39\00:33:36.07 Is she just like Jezebel in the Old Testament? 00:33:36.10\00:33:38.88 She most certainly is. 00:33:38.91\00:33:40.38 Is Ahab very similar to King Herod? 00:33:40.41\00:33:45.04 Yes, both of them are wimps. 00:33:45.07\00:33:48.60 When you read the stories 00:33:48.63\00:33:49.66 that have a very similar character. 00:33:49.69\00:33:52.24 And Jezebel and Herodias 00:33:52.27\00:33:54.18 both have very similar characters. 00:33:54.21\00:33:57.21 And so you have this Old Testament Elijah 00:33:57.24\00:34:00.24 who has a king, for an enemy, 00:34:00.27\00:34:03.46 a Harlot queen for enemy 00:34:03.49\00:34:05.89 and the apostate prophets of Baal 00:34:05.92\00:34:08.72 who do the biddings of Jezebel. 00:34:08.75\00:34:10.87 And the New Testament Elijah has as an enemy Herod 00:34:10.90\00:34:15.46 and Herod's wife Herodias 00:34:15.49\00:34:18.34 and then one other instrument 00:34:18.37\00:34:19.87 that we're gonna study as we go along. 00:34:19.90\00:34:22.43 Now notice Mark 6:18 00:34:22.46\00:34:25.16 what is that Herodias hated about John the Baptist? 00:34:25.19\00:34:29.94 Why did she have him thrown into prison by the king? 00:34:29.97\00:34:34.67 Oh, it says there in Mark 6:18, 00:34:34.70\00:34:37.57 "For john had said to Herod, 00:34:37.60\00:34:42.49 'It is not lawful for you 00:34:42.52\00:34:46.74 to have your brother's wife.'" 00:34:46.77\00:34:51.79 Did John the Baptist rebuke this adulterous relationship 00:34:51.82\00:34:56.35 between the king and Herodias? 00:34:56.38\00:34:58.75 Yes. 00:34:58.78\00:35:00.09 Did Elijah in the Old Testament rebuke 00:35:00.12\00:35:03.28 this relationship between King Ahab and Jezebel? 00:35:03.31\00:35:07.36 He most certainly did. 00:35:07.39\00:35:08.61 Did that get them into trouble in the Old Testament? 00:35:08.64\00:35:10.92 Yes. 00:35:10.95\00:35:12.00 Did the John the Baptist 00:35:12.03\00:35:13.06 get into trouble in the New Testament? 00:35:13.09\00:35:15.25 He most certainly did and he got into trouble 00:35:15.28\00:35:17.62 because he was preaching 00:35:17.65\00:35:18.81 the seventh commandment of God's holy law. 00:35:18.84\00:35:22.36 Now I want you to notice verse 19, 00:35:22.39\00:35:24.50 the plot gets very interesting here, verse 19. 00:35:24.53\00:35:28.13 It says, "Therefore," because of what he preached, 00:35:28.16\00:35:33.32 "Therefore Herodias held it against him" 00:35:33.35\00:35:39.21 and now notice this, "and wanted to kill him," 00:35:39.24\00:35:43.87 was she a murder as woman? 00:35:43.90\00:35:46.23 Was Jezebel murder this woman 00:35:46.26\00:35:48.44 who wanted the death of Elijah? 00:35:48.47\00:35:50.05 Oh, yes. 00:35:50.08\00:35:51.28 "Therefore Herodias held it against him, 00:35:51.31\00:35:53.93 and wanted" to what? 00:35:53.96\00:35:56.27 "To kill him but she could not." 00:35:56.30\00:36:01.80 Was there something that restrained her 00:36:01.83\00:36:04.19 from killing God's prophet? 00:36:04.22\00:36:05.60 Yes. 00:36:05.63\00:36:06.68 According to this, there was some restraint, 00:36:06.71\00:36:09.66 could we even say 00:36:09.69\00:36:10.76 that perhaps she had a deadly wound 00:36:10.79\00:36:13.89 that did not allow her to kill the prophet 00:36:13.92\00:36:17.67 even though she wanted to kill God's prophet? 00:36:17.70\00:36:21.90 And so she held it against him and wanted to kill him 00:36:21.93\00:36:24.94 but there was something that was holding her back 00:36:24.97\00:36:28.38 from killing God's prophet. 00:36:28.41\00:36:30.82 Now let's notice Chapter 6:20, Mark 6:20. 00:36:30.85\00:36:36.13 Let me ask you was the king 00:36:36.16\00:36:37.98 by himself a menace to John the Baptist? 00:36:38.01\00:36:41.66 No. 00:36:41.69\00:36:42.83 Was Ahab a menace to Elijah in the Old Testament? 00:36:42.86\00:36:47.16 Was he the dangerous figure? 00:36:47.19\00:36:48.41 Was the king the dangerous figure? 00:36:48.44\00:36:50.08 Absolutely not. 00:36:50.11\00:36:51.92 In the New Testament the king is not the dangerous figure. 00:36:51.95\00:36:54.83 Who was he dangerous figure in the New Testament story? 00:36:54.86\00:36:57.94 It's Herodias. 00:36:57.97\00:36:59.89 Who was the dangerous figure in the Old Testament story? 00:36:59.92\00:37:02.93 Jezebel. 00:37:02.96\00:37:04.45 In both cases they are harlot queens 00:37:04.48\00:37:08.36 who are committing adultery. 00:37:08.39\00:37:11.22 So, it says in verse 20 00:37:11.25\00:37:12.64 "For Herod feared John, 00:37:12.67\00:37:15.73 knowing that he was a just 00:37:15.76\00:37:17.80 and holy man, and protected him." 00:37:17.83\00:37:21.88 Notice the problem was the king? 00:37:21.91\00:37:24.00 The problem is when the king joined the harlot 00:37:24.03\00:37:26.89 and when the daughter helped the mother. 00:37:26.92\00:37:28.80 We will come to that in a few moments. 00:37:28.83\00:37:30.53 It says "And when he heard him, 00:37:30.56\00:37:33.28 he did many things and heard him" what? 00:37:33.31\00:37:36.63 "Heard him gladly." 00:37:36.66\00:37:39.61 No, there's no problems with the king, 00:37:39.64\00:37:42.00 the civil power was the problem? 00:37:42.03\00:37:44.29 The problem was the harlot mother. 00:37:44.32\00:37:47.75 Now let's go 00:37:47.78\00:37:52.81 it says "Then an opportune day came." 00:37:52.84\00:37:56.14 Let me ask you opportune for whom? 00:37:56.17\00:37:59.95 Opportune for the mother. 00:37:59.98\00:38:02.79 In other words for Herodias. 00:38:02.82\00:38:05.22 "Then an opportune they came 00:38:05.25\00:38:07.78 when Herod on his birthday 00:38:07.81\00:38:11.36 gave a feast for his nobles, 00:38:11.39\00:38:14.28 the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee." 00:38:14.31\00:38:20.16 Let me ask you what do you supposed 00:38:20.19\00:38:21.64 they were drinking at that party? 00:38:21.67\00:38:24.72 Water right, H20. Nice try. 00:38:24.75\00:38:29.90 In the Book Temperance, pages 50 and 51 00:38:29.93\00:38:33.57 only an individual was drunk 00:38:33.60\00:38:35.29 would've offered half of the kingdom for a dance. 00:38:35.32\00:38:39.21 Notice the Book Temperance, pages 50 and 51 00:38:39.24\00:38:43.20 "The false enchantment of the dizzy scene 00:38:43.23\00:38:48.34 seemed to take away reason 00:38:48.37\00:38:51.12 and dignity from Herod and his guests, 00:38:51.15\00:38:54.51 who were flushed with wine. 00:38:54.54\00:38:58.01 The music and wine and dancing 00:38:58.04\00:39:02.08 had removed the fear and reverence of God from them. 00:39:02.11\00:39:08.04 Nothing seemed sacred to Herod's perverted senses." 00:39:08.07\00:39:15.48 What was Herod drinking? He was drinking wine. 00:39:15.51\00:39:21.05 By the way, do you know that the Old Testament story 00:39:21.08\00:39:22.79 I didn't mention this last time. 00:39:22.82\00:39:24.37 The Old Testament story also involves wine. 00:39:24.40\00:39:28.58 You remember that King Ahab wanted Naboth's vineyard 00:39:28.61\00:39:32.99 because it produced wine. 00:39:33.02\00:39:34.48 I won't get into that now 00:39:34.51\00:39:35.97 but there's a wine involved in both stories. 00:39:36.00\00:39:40.29 And so here under the influence of wine 00:39:40.32\00:39:42.77 he was not able to think clearly 00:39:42.80\00:39:45.98 about what he was offering and what he was doing. 00:39:46.01\00:39:49.18 Do you know that the influence of wine 00:39:49.21\00:39:52.32 blurs the ability to distinguish 00:39:52.35\00:39:54.58 between the holy and the common? 00:39:54.61\00:39:56.92 We have the story of Nadab and Abihu 00:39:56.95\00:39:58.68 in the Old Testament, tragic story. 00:39:58.71\00:40:02.52 The Bible says that they took strange fire before the Lord, 00:40:02.55\00:40:06.69 they put it with the incense. 00:40:06.72\00:40:08.21 God had said take the fire from the altar 00:40:08.24\00:40:10.17 that's holy fire, they took common fire 00:40:10.20\00:40:12.75 and they offered it to God as if it were holy. 00:40:12.78\00:40:17.76 And the Bible say a little bit 00:40:17.79\00:40:19.10 later on in the story in Leviticus 10 00:40:19.13\00:40:21.20 that the reason why they were not able 00:40:21.23\00:40:22.74 to distinguish common fire from holy fire 00:40:22.77\00:40:25.09 is because they had been drinking wine. 00:40:25.12\00:40:30.10 You have the same story in Daniel Chapter 5 00:40:30.13\00:40:33.03 where Belshazzar is having this banquet 00:40:33.06\00:40:35.75 the night that Babylon fell. 00:40:35.78\00:40:37.94 And the Bible says that under the effect of the wine, 00:40:37.97\00:40:41.24 he call for the holy vessels to be brought from the temple 00:40:41.27\00:40:44.63 of Jerusalem the holy vessels 00:40:44.66\00:40:47.30 and he used God's holy vessels 00:40:47.33\00:40:49.60 to put the common wine in 00:40:49.63\00:40:52.08 and to have people drink from them 00:40:52.11\00:40:54.79 and that lead to the fall of Babylon 00:40:54.82\00:40:57.55 as the drinking of wine by Nadab and Abihu lead to their deaths. 00:40:57.58\00:41:03.28 In other words, we have wine here. 00:41:03.31\00:41:05.46 By the way I'll get ahead of myself a little bit, 00:41:05.49\00:41:08.07 does the Book of Revelation 00:41:08.10\00:41:09.33 speak about the whole world being drunk 00:41:09.36\00:41:11.71 with the wine of the Harlot Babylon 00:41:11.74\00:41:14.65 in the end time? Absolutely. 00:41:14.68\00:41:16.94 I just want to give you an inkling of what's coming 00:41:16.97\00:41:19.23 because both of these stories, 00:41:19.26\00:41:21.10 both of these Elijah's prefigure an end time Elijah. 00:41:21.13\00:41:25.43 All of the details callous from the toast Elijah's 00:41:25.46\00:41:29.04 when you put them together 00:41:29.07\00:41:30.33 all of the details come together in one great final Elijah 00:41:30.36\00:41:34.94 which is not a single person but actually a movement. 00:41:34.97\00:41:39.05 So here you have the mother 00:41:39.08\00:41:40.27 who wants to kill the New Testament Elijah 00:41:40.30\00:41:42.93 but there's something that keeps her from doing it. 00:41:42.96\00:41:45.32 She has no power or influence over the king 00:41:45.35\00:41:48.25 at that point she needs somebody to help her 00:41:48.28\00:41:51.09 like the prophets of Baal help Jezebel 00:41:51.12\00:41:53.47 seek out Elijah to kill him. 00:41:53.50\00:41:55.63 And now the daughter comes in to the story. 00:41:55.66\00:41:59.91 Notice Mark 6:22 00:41:59.94\00:42:04.89 "And when Herodias' daughter 00:42:04.92\00:42:08.30 herself came in and danced, 00:42:08.33\00:42:14.06 and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, 00:42:14.09\00:42:18.81 the king said to the girl, 00:42:18.84\00:42:21.65 'Ask me whatever you want, 00:42:21.68\00:42:24.84 and I will give it to you.'" 00:42:24.87\00:42:28.98 So now we have the third enemy 00:42:29.01\00:42:30.98 of the New Testament Elijah coming into focus. 00:42:31.01\00:42:35.26 By the way, do you notice the terminology 00:42:35.29\00:42:37.09 that we have here? 00:42:37.12\00:42:39.55 Herod is called in this passage king. 00:42:39.58\00:42:46.28 In this passage Herodias is called mother. 00:42:46.31\00:42:52.06 And in this passage Salome is called daughter. 00:42:52.09\00:42:58.63 This will be picked up in Revelations Chapter 17, 00:42:58.66\00:43:01.95 where you have the mother off Harlot's, 00:43:01.98\00:43:05.20 she has daughters and she fornicates 00:43:05.23\00:43:07.80 with the king's of the earth. 00:43:07.83\00:43:10.58 You have a triple alliance 00:43:10.61\00:43:12.18 in the Book of Revelation as well. 00:43:12.21\00:43:14.21 And they bear a resemblance in their relationships 00:43:14.24\00:43:18.30 to the figures that we have 00:43:18.33\00:43:19.36 in the story of the New Testament Elijah 00:43:19.39\00:43:21.82 and the story of the Old Testament Elijah. 00:43:21.85\00:43:24.49 So Herodias can do nothing. 00:43:24.52\00:43:26.22 She needs the help of whom? 00:43:26.25\00:43:28.49 Of her daughter her image and likeness. 00:43:28.52\00:43:32.47 Notice verse 23. 00:43:32.50\00:43:34.65 By the way, who is the manipulator 00:43:34.68\00:43:36.71 and the orchestrator that stands behind the scenes here? 00:43:36.74\00:43:41.57 Who is the dangerous figure? 00:43:41.60\00:43:44.07 The king? No. 00:43:44.10\00:43:45.75 The daughter? 00:43:45.78\00:43:46.97 No, the daughter does never mind of her own. 00:43:47.00\00:43:49.30 Like mother like daughter, right? 00:43:49.33\00:43:51.51 She does just like her mother. 00:43:51.54\00:43:52.74 She's an the image and likeness of her mother, 00:43:52.77\00:43:55.22 if you please. Notice verse 23. 00:43:55.25\00:44:00.37 "He also slower to swore to her, 00:44:00.40\00:44:03.28 'Whatever you ask me, I will give you, 00:44:03.31\00:44:07.47 up to half my kingdom.'" 00:44:07.50\00:44:11.68 And now the story really gets thick. 00:44:11.71\00:44:14.99 Verse 24, So she went out 00:44:15.02\00:44:19.36 and said to her mother, 00:44:19.39\00:44:23.30 this is so significant. 00:44:23.33\00:44:25.93 When we get the Book of Revelation 00:44:25.96\00:44:27.63 we'll understand the full breath and significance of this story 00:44:27.66\00:44:31.77 because this is the foreshadowing 00:44:31.80\00:44:33.89 of a global worldwide system at the end of time 00:44:33.92\00:44:37.41 which is spoken of as the dragon, 00:44:37.44\00:44:39.32 the beast and the false prophet. 00:44:39.35\00:44:41.10 The kings, the mother and her daughters 00:44:41.13\00:44:44.79 and they bear the same relationship as in this story. 00:44:44.82\00:44:48.31 And so we find here in verse 24, 00:44:48.34\00:44:51.97 "So she went out and said to her mother, 00:44:52.00\00:44:55.89 'What shall I ask?'" 00:44:55.92\00:44:58.33 Does the daughter have mind of her own? 00:44:58.36\00:45:01.03 No. 00:45:01.06\00:45:03.30 Her mother is the one who dictates. 00:45:03.33\00:45:05.51 Does her mother want to use the king to kill John? Yes. 00:45:05.54\00:45:09.11 Can she do it directly with the king? No. 00:45:09.14\00:45:11.15 So she has to use her daughter in order to be able 00:45:11.18\00:45:14.51 to use the king to kill the New Testament Elijah. 00:45:14.54\00:45:18.88 So she went out and said to her mother 00:45:18.91\00:45:20.77 what shall I ask? 00:45:20.80\00:45:23.90 And she said the head of John the Baptist. 00:45:23.93\00:45:28.75 That's amazing. 00:45:32.80\00:45:34.67 You know, you would think that the daughter would say mother, 00:45:34.70\00:45:38.80 you've got to be crazy. 00:45:38.83\00:45:41.80 Did she say that? No. 00:45:41.83\00:45:43.81 What she just like your mother? 00:45:43.84\00:45:45.67 She was an image and reflection of her mother. 00:45:45.70\00:45:48.86 Notice verse 25. 00:45:48.89\00:45:51.64 "Immediately" did she think about it? No. 00:45:51.67\00:45:56.84 What her mother said, that was it. 00:45:56.87\00:45:58.78 "Immediately she came in 00:45:58.81\00:46:03.79 with haste to the king 00:46:03.82\00:46:07.88 and asked, saying, 00:46:07.91\00:46:09.89 "I want you to give me at once 00:46:09.92\00:46:13.14 the head of John the Baptist on a platter." 00:46:13.17\00:46:17.58 Is she just like her mother? 00:46:17.61\00:46:19.86 Yes, she is. 00:46:19.89\00:46:21.31 Is she the one who is devising this plan? No. 00:46:21.34\00:46:24.65 She's doing with her mother wants. 00:46:24.68\00:46:27.62 Is this the same story 00:46:27.65\00:46:28.70 that we find in the Old Testament? Identical. 00:46:28.73\00:46:33.03 Now notice verse 26 00:46:33.06\00:46:35.32 how the civil power reacts 00:46:35.35\00:46:37.36 does the king now know there's been had? 00:46:37.39\00:46:41.59 Yes, but it's too late. 00:46:41.62\00:46:44.05 Isn't right, it's too late. 00:46:44.08\00:46:46.45 The superpower awakens, the king awakens 00:46:46.48\00:46:48.80 he said it's terrible of what I have done. 00:46:48.83\00:46:52.54 Verse 26 "And the king was exceedingly sorry, 00:46:52.57\00:46:58.24 yet, because of the oaths 00:46:58.27\00:47:00.19 and because of those who sat with him, 00:47:00.22\00:47:03.31 he did not want to refuse her." 00:47:03.34\00:47:07.69 Interesting. 00:47:07.72\00:47:09.89 The political power has given a decree 00:47:09.92\00:47:13.44 and the decree cannot be what? 00:47:13.47\00:47:16.11 The decree cannot be changed. 00:47:16.14\00:47:19.50 Does that ring a bell? 00:47:19.53\00:47:22.86 Now let's notice, how the story reaches its climax. 00:47:22.89\00:47:27.24 Mark 6:27, 28 it says, 00:47:27.27\00:47:31.74 "Immediately the king sent an executioner 00:47:31.77\00:47:38.31 and commanded his head to be brought. 00:47:38.34\00:47:42.18 And he went and beheaded him in prison." 00:47:42.21\00:47:47.32 And now comes very significant verse. 00:47:47.35\00:47:50.35 "Brought his head on a platter, 00:47:50.38\00:47:54.16 and gave it to the girl, 00:47:54.19\00:47:57.30 and the girl gave it to her mother." 00:47:57.33\00:48:03.67 Are you getting the picture here? 00:48:06.34\00:48:09.27 Is this a threefold alliance? 00:48:09.30\00:48:12.07 It most certainly is. 00:48:12.10\00:48:13.78 Is the king the dangerous figure? No. 00:48:13.81\00:48:16.34 Is the daughter by herself the dangerous figure? No. 00:48:16.37\00:48:19.76 It's the mother. 00:48:19.79\00:48:21.58 The mother can't do everything 00:48:21.61\00:48:23.44 unless she uses her daughter to influence the king. 00:48:23.47\00:48:29.23 Now let's go back Malachi 4:5, 6. 00:48:29.26\00:48:33.99 Is John the Baptist the last Elijah of scripture? 00:48:34.02\00:48:38.27 No. 00:48:38.30\00:48:40.62 Because the scripture tells us that the end time Elijah 00:48:40.65\00:48:43.89 would arise before the great and terrible day of the Lord. 00:48:43.92\00:48:47.57 And the first coming was not the great 00:48:47.60\00:48:49.37 and terrible day of the Lord, 00:48:49.40\00:48:51.02 the day that's coming burn like oven 00:48:51.05\00:48:53.23 it says in Malachi 4:1. 00:48:53.26\00:48:55.81 So John the Baptist must have been 00:48:55.84\00:48:57.63 a partial fulfillment of the Elijah Prophecy 00:48:57.66\00:49:01.16 not the fulfillment of the Elijah Prophecy. 00:49:01.19\00:49:04.17 Do you know that there are many prophecies 00:49:04.20\00:49:05.69 of the Old Testament that received 00:49:05.72\00:49:07.08 partial fulfillments with the first coming? 00:49:07.11\00:49:10.99 For example Joel Chapter 2 00:49:11.02\00:49:12.94 "I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh. 00:49:12.97\00:49:15.35 There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars." 00:49:15.38\00:49:17.40 There is no evidence that on the day of Pentecost 00:49:17.43\00:49:19.53 they are were signs in the sun, moon and stars 00:49:19.56\00:49:21.59 and yet that prophecy was partially fulfilled 00:49:21.62\00:49:24.12 on the day of Pentecost according to Peter. 00:49:24.15\00:49:27.27 So you have prophecies in the Old Testament 00:49:27.30\00:49:29.31 that are partially fulfilled. 00:49:29.34\00:49:30.97 Another one is the Book of Haggai, chapter 2, 00:49:31.00\00:49:34.00 where it says that, 00:49:34.03\00:49:35.33 that the desire of nations of all nations 00:49:35.36\00:49:36.99 would come to the temple. 00:49:37.02\00:49:39.62 And that God was gonna shake the havens 00:49:39.65\00:49:41.67 and the earth when it came to the temple. 00:49:41.70\00:49:43.62 Well, the fact is that when Jesus wasn't incarnate 00:49:43.65\00:49:47.08 the heavens on the earth didn't shake, 00:49:47.11\00:49:49.14 so we have to expect a second coming of Messiah. 00:49:49.17\00:49:51.60 In other words, these Old Testament prophecies 00:49:51.63\00:49:53.98 have a dual fulfillment. 00:49:54.01\00:49:56.00 They are fulfilled partially at the first coming 00:49:56.03\00:49:58.49 and they will be fully fulfilled 00:49:58.52\00:50:00.37 in connection with the second coming of Jesus. 00:50:00.40\00:50:02.62 Notice Malachi 4: 5, 6 00:50:02.65\00:50:04.89 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet 00:50:04.92\00:50:08.78 before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord." 00:50:08.81\00:50:13.46 Are we to expect that end time Elijah 00:50:13.49\00:50:15.43 before the great and dreadful day of Lord? 00:50:15.46\00:50:17.36 Yes, because Malachi 4:1-3 says 00:50:17.39\00:50:20.09 that dreadful day of the Lord is the day 00:50:20.12\00:50:22.44 that burns like an oven when the wicked will be stubble. 00:50:22.47\00:50:26.44 There will not neither be left root no brash 00:50:26.47\00:50:29.54 that is the dreadful and terrible day of Lord. 00:50:29.57\00:50:31.61 God is gonna send Elijah before that day. 00:50:31.64\00:50:35.51 He continues saying in verse 6 00:50:35.54\00:50:37.06 "And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, 00:50:37.09\00:50:39.89 and the hearts of the children to their fathers. 00:50:39.92\00:50:42.17 Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse." 00:50:42.20\00:50:47.05 I found an interesting statement 00:50:47.08\00:50:49.37 which was written by James White, 00:50:49.40\00:50:51.74 the title of the article is Elijah the Prophet. 00:50:51.77\00:50:55.27 This quotation is found in the Adventist review 00:50:55.30\00:50:57.36 in Sabbath Herald April 5, 1870. 00:50:57.39\00:51:01.36 He says this "The first and second advents" 00:51:01.39\00:51:06.12 or comings "are in many respects parallel events." 00:51:06.15\00:51:11.71 Single prophecies often contemplate them both" 00:51:11.74\00:51:15.86 in other word single prophecies contemplate both comings. 00:51:15.89\00:51:19.54 "The prophetic utterances glancing 00:51:19.57\00:51:21.84 from one to the other in quick transition. 00:51:21.87\00:51:25.39 Such prophecies receive a partial fulfillment 00:51:25.42\00:51:29.77 in the events of the first advent, 00:51:29.80\00:51:32.31 and a complete accomplishment 00:51:32.34\00:51:34.85 in events connected with the second. 00:51:34.88\00:51:37.94 Of such a nature 00:51:37.97\00:51:39.39 we believe are some of the predictions of Malachi." 00:51:39.42\00:51:44.28 So basically he's taking this principle 00:51:44.31\00:51:47.06 that some prophecies of the Old Testament 00:51:47.09\00:51:49.60 are fulfilled partially with the first coming 00:51:49.63\00:51:51.76 of the Messiah and are fully fulfilled 00:51:51.79\00:51:54.93 in connection with the second coming of the Messiah. 00:51:54.96\00:51:58.30 Ellen White in the Desire of Ages, 00:51:58.33\00:52:00.52 page 101 concurs with this idea when she says the following. 00:52:00.55\00:52:06.76 "In preparing the way for Christ's first Advent, 00:52:06.79\00:52:12.24 he that is John the Baptist was a representative 00:52:12.27\00:52:16.48 of those who are to prepare up people 00:52:16.51\00:52:20.09 for our are Lord's second coming." 00:52:20.12\00:52:23.40 In other words, John the Baptist 00:52:23.43\00:52:24.88 becomes a type of God's end time people 00:52:24.91\00:52:30.02 who will proclaim a message 00:52:30.05\00:52:31.59 to the Christian world like Elijah did 00:52:31.62\00:52:34.58 and like John the Baptist did. 00:52:34.61\00:52:36.82 But there's a very important principle 00:52:36.85\00:52:38.45 that we need to understand 00:52:38.48\00:52:40.13 as we transition into our study 00:52:40.16\00:52:42.95 of the last day Elijah and that principle is this. 00:52:42.98\00:52:48.34 In the Old Testament 00:52:48.37\00:52:50.66 and in the days of John the Baptist 00:52:50.69\00:52:53.54 you are dealing with literal Israel. 00:52:53.57\00:52:58.06 And you are dealing with a literal person 00:52:58.09\00:53:02.51 on a literal stage, on the local stage, 00:53:02.54\00:53:06.73 literal Jerusalem and Judea. 00:53:06.76\00:53:10.02 In other words because the Old Testament Elijah 00:53:10.05\00:53:12.52 and because John the Baptist are dealing with literal Israel 00:53:12.55\00:53:17.04 you have a literal person 00:53:17.07\00:53:19.08 speaking in a limited geographical location. 00:53:19.11\00:53:24.53 The end time Elijah is different 00:53:24.56\00:53:27.51 because with the end time Elijah 00:53:27.54\00:53:29.95 you are not dealing with literal Israel 00:53:29.98\00:53:32.88 you are dealing with what? 00:53:32.91\00:53:35.14 Spiritual Israel. 00:53:35.17\00:53:36.98 Let me ask you where is spiritual Israel located today? 00:53:37.01\00:53:42.10 Spiritual Israel is all over the world. 00:53:42.13\00:53:45.43 Spiritual Israel is composed of those 00:53:45.46\00:53:48.28 who have received Jesus Christ as Lord. 00:53:48.31\00:53:51.26 We find for example in Galatians 3:29 00:53:51.29\00:53:54.95 it says "If you are Christ when you are Abraham seed, 00:53:54.98\00:54:01.44 and heirs according to the promise." 00:54:01.47\00:54:04.01 So in other words, Israel today is not in the Middle East 00:54:04.04\00:54:07.54 according to the New Testament definition Israel is worldwide 00:54:07.57\00:54:12.44 because Israel is composed of those 00:54:12.47\00:54:15.02 who have received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. 00:54:15.05\00:54:20.21 Which means that if Israel is worldwide then the messenger 00:54:20.24\00:54:26.43 who is going to bring the Elijah message 00:54:26.46\00:54:28.89 at the end of time must be a movement of people 00:54:28.92\00:54:33.96 who proclaimed the same message that Elijah preached 00:54:33.99\00:54:37.34 because one individual is not gonna preach 00:54:37.37\00:54:39.50 the gospel to the whole world. 00:54:39.53\00:54:42.06 The three angel's messages will find in Revelation 14, 00:54:42.09\00:54:45.41 are the final Elijah message 00:54:45.44\00:54:47.52 that go to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. 00:54:47.55\00:54:51.87 It takes a movement, 00:54:51.90\00:54:53.62 it takes a Remnant Church 00:54:53.65\00:54:55.28 to proclaim this message to the world. 00:54:55.31\00:54:57.94 So in the Old Testament 00:54:57.97\00:54:59.43 and with the New Testament Elijah 00:54:59.46\00:55:01.22 you're dealing with literal Israel, 00:55:01.25\00:55:03.87 you're dealing with the literal person 00:55:03.90\00:55:05.89 who brings the message 00:55:05.92\00:55:07.53 and the event is taking place on a local stage. 00:55:07.56\00:55:12.55 In the end time you have spiritual Israel 00:55:12.58\00:55:15.79 and the message will be imparted 00:55:15.82\00:55:17.64 by a movement on a worldwide or global scale. 00:55:17.67\00:55:22.74 Do you understand this principle 00:55:22.77\00:55:25.09 it's vital for comprehending 00:55:25.12\00:55:27.56 how Elijah is gonna fulfill his mission in the end time. 00:55:27.59\00:55:31.13 We're not talking about one individual 00:55:31.16\00:55:33.43 we're talking about a movement. 00:55:33.46\00:55:36.06 But let me ask you the end time Elijah. 00:55:36.09\00:55:38.95 He's gonna bring his message primarily to the un-churched. 00:55:38.98\00:55:43.89 He's gonna bring his message 00:55:43.92\00:55:45.36 to the Hindus and the Buddhists and all of those people 00:55:45.39\00:55:49.56 who don't profess Christianity. 00:55:49.59\00:55:53.09 You think that the end time Elijah 00:55:53.12\00:55:55.63 is primarily coming to bring 00:55:55.66\00:55:58.46 his message to the secular world? 00:55:58.49\00:56:00.54 No. 00:56:00.57\00:56:02.00 He's going to bring his message to whom? 00:56:02.03\00:56:05.54 To Christendom. 00:56:05.57\00:56:07.87 In other words, Christendom 00:56:07.90\00:56:09.06 that has apostatized from the Lord 00:56:09.09\00:56:11.92 and needs to be brought back to the Lord 00:56:11.95\00:56:14.40 so they might be ready for the second coming of Jesus. 00:56:14.43\00:56:18.24 So the Elijah message is targeted primarily Christians. 00:56:18.27\00:56:22.74 Some people say you're Adventist, 00:56:22.77\00:56:24.49 you're sheep stealers. 00:56:24.52\00:56:26.95 Because all you do is preach to other Christians 00:56:26.98\00:56:28.94 in your evangelistic meetings. 00:56:28.97\00:56:30.33 Well, the fact is, that Elijah was sent to Israel, 00:56:30.36\00:56:33.86 John the Baptist was sent to Israel, 00:56:33.89\00:56:36.05 the end time Elijah is sent Christendom 00:56:36.08\00:56:38.76 which has forgotten the true God 00:56:38.79\00:56:41.62 that needs to be that brought back to the true God. 00:56:41.65\00:56:45.38 Our Christendom which has mixed or blended 00:56:45.41\00:56:50.34 worship to the Lord and worship to paganism, 00:56:50.37\00:56:54.13 you say how is that? 00:56:54.16\00:56:55.77 We'll study this but let me give you an inkling 00:56:55.80\00:56:57.96 of what I am talking about. 00:56:57.99\00:56:59.20 The Christian world claims to serve the true God 00:56:59.23\00:57:02.13 but they keep the day of sun 00:57:02.16\00:57:03.93 which is a pagan day of worship. 00:57:03.96\00:57:07.29 Bear was the sun God 00:57:07.32\00:57:09.12 and yet they claimed to serve the true God. 00:57:09.15\00:57:11.45 The end time Elijah will call the Christian world 00:57:11.48\00:57:14.59 back to the routs, back to the truth, 00:57:14.62\00:57:17.77 back to the worship of the true Creator on the day 00:57:17.80\00:57:21.38 which He has established as a day of worship. 00:57:21.41\00:57:24.85 Don't miss the next exciting episode. 00:57:24.88\00:57:29.90
