[Music] 00:00:01.63\00:00:11.66 [Music] 00:00:11.66\00:00:21.16 As we continue our discussion through the Bible we need to 00:00:21.16\00:00:24.43 remember that we're coming from somewhere right? 00:00:24.43\00:00:26.76 There's a story line. 00:00:26.76\00:00:28.00 There's a narrative. 00:00:28.00\00:00:29.56 And so when we come to the New Testament the New Testament 00:00:29.56\00:00:32.13 doesn't exist in a vacuum there's backdrop, there's some, 00:00:32.13\00:00:36.43 there's a stage, there's something going on. 00:00:36.43\00:00:38.90 There are characters these characters have enacted aspects 00:00:38.90\00:00:44.06 of the story and as we move into the New Testament we see that 00:00:44.06\00:00:47.60 Jesus is the fulfillment of this Old Testament narrative, this 00:00:47.60\00:00:53.93 trajectory, this steady, moving story that comes to completion 00:00:53.93\00:00:59.80 in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:00:59.80\00:01:01.66 The gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are basically four 00:01:01.66\00:01:06.06 different angles on the fulfillment of this story line. 00:01:06.06\00:01:10.00 Some of it deals with creation looping all the way back to Adam 00:01:10.00\00:01:13.70 and Eve. 00:01:13.70\00:01:14.96 Some of it deals with Abraham and beginning with him in Israel 00:01:14.96\00:01:18.40 and then filling out the details of how Jesus fulfills on behalf 00:01:18.40\00:01:22.90 of humanity and God's idea. 00:01:22.90\00:01:24.83 -And it's all unique, they're all complimentary and 00:01:24.83\00:01:27.16 harmonious. 00:01:27.16\00:01:27.80 --Yeah. 00:01:27.80\00:01:28.86 --It's like 4 witnesses at the scene type thing. 00:01:28.86\00:01:30.26 --Exactly. 00:01:30.26\00:01:31.30 So where do we go first? 00:01:31.30\00:01:33.20 I think a good place to begin is where nobody wants to begin the 00:01:33.20\00:01:36.10 New Testament with the genealogies. 00:01:36.10\00:01:38.30 I mean. 00:01:38.30\00:01:39.70 --The most exciting parts of the Bible. 00:01:39.70\00:01:41.16 --You want to put yourself, if you want to put yourself to 00:01:41.16\00:01:45.16 sleep just get comfortable and read the genealogies. 00:01:45.16\00:01:49.36 But it's there for a reason, yeah there's something there. 00:01:49.36\00:01:52.56 --When I read a story a number of years ago about Willie 00:01:52.56\00:01:56.36 Nelson, the country music singer and he was in jail for something 00:01:56.36\00:01:59.33 early in his life and he was. 00:01:59.33\00:02:02.36 --For the same thing he's always. 00:02:02.36\00:02:03.96 --Well whatever, I don't know a lot about him I just know that 00:02:03.96\00:02:06.73 he was in jail and he was telling this story about how 00:02:06.73\00:02:10.06 somebody had given him a Bible and he thought yeah, you know, I 00:02:10.06\00:02:13.80 do need to get my life on track and so he picked up a Bible and, 00:02:13.80\00:02:15.93 it was just a New Testament, you know, like probably the New 00:02:15.93\00:02:19.63 Testament, Psalms and Proverbs or something. 00:02:19.63\00:02:21.36 And so he picks it up and he starts reading and he starts 00:02:21.36\00:02:23.70 reading of course in Matthew chapter one which is where you'd 00:02:23.70\00:02:25.86 start if it was just a New Testament. 00:02:25.86\00:02:27.36 And he became so frustrated, he's like how can this and he 00:02:27.36\00:02:31.03 just threw it against the wall and he's like this is, what is 00:02:31.03\00:02:33.53 this to me. 00:02:33.53\00:02:34.80 And the truth is, is that while many people wouldn't go quite 00:02:34.80\00:02:36.73 that far to throw it against the wall or just to disregard it at 00:02:36.73\00:02:39.46 that point. 00:02:39.46\00:02:40.66 The genealogies don't make, especially in Matthew, they 00:02:40.66\00:02:42.86 don't seem to make a lot of sense to us. 00:02:42.86\00:02:44.93 But Matthew is making a point and it's a very important point 00:02:44.93\00:02:48.56 especially to the audience to whom Matthew is very likely 00:02:48.56\00:02:52.20 writing and it's largely a Jewish audience largely a Jewish 00:02:52.20\00:02:54.86 context. 00:02:54.86\00:02:56.06 Unlike, say Luke, who's writing to a broader audience as a 00:02:56.06\00:02:59.03 Gentile he has not only a Jewish perspective but the gentile 00:02:59.03\00:03:02.86 perspective as well. 00:03:02.86\00:03:04.46 But in the genealogies of Matthew, we don't have to go 00:03:04.46\00:03:07.13 through all of them but we can open up Matthew chapter one 00:03:07.13\00:03:09.13 verse one where it just says the book of the genealogy of Jesus 00:03:09.13\00:03:14.40 Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 00:03:14.40\00:03:17.10 Now for Matthew he has just touched on the three major 00:03:17.10\00:03:21.06 figures in the history of the Jewish faith and religion, it's 00:03:21.06\00:03:26.16 all there. 00:03:26.16\00:03:27.43 There's the Jesus guy, there's the Moses guy and there's the 00:03:27.43\00:03:30.23 David guy. 00:03:30.23\00:03:31.30 These are the guys and excuse me Abraham I said 00:03:31.30\00:03:33.83 --You said Moses. 00:03:33.83\00:03:35.93 --I said Moses. 00:03:35.93\00:03:36.66 -You meant Abraham. 00:03:36.66\00:03:37.90 --So Abraham he takes the story back to Abraham that's where 00:03:37.90\00:03:40.33 we've been going then you have David as the man after God's own 00:03:40.33\00:03:43.10 heart, etc. We've not really developed that, we might. 00:03:43.10\00:03:45.03 And then he begins to go through, look at where he starts 00:03:45.03\00:03:47.46 in verse two, Abraham begot Isaac. 00:03:47.46\00:03:49.90 What if, that's a very interesting place to start 00:03:49.90\00:03:51.73 unlike Luke when he tells the genealogy story of Jesus he goes 00:03:51.73\00:03:55.60 all the way back to Adam. 00:03:55.60\00:03:56.93 Of course he would be inclined to do so as a Gentile. 00:03:56.93\00:03:59.73 He wants to tell the larger universal picture. 00:03:59.73\00:04:01.33 Matthew's not denying that but he's making a specific point 00:04:01.33\00:04:02.90 here. 00:04:02.90\00:04:04.16 He starts with Abraham now as he sort of develops this watch what 00:04:04.16\00:04:07.30 happens here when he comes to the conclusion of all the 00:04:07.30\00:04:09.03 genealogies, verse two, you know Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot 00:04:09.03\00:04:11.93 Jacob, Jacob begot Judah and his brothers, etc. By the way Andrew 00:04:11.93\00:04:14.86 Peterson has a really great song that is the genealogies I don't 00:04:14.86\00:04:18.73 know if you've ever heard it or not. 00:04:18.73\00:04:20.10 Oh it's awesome, isn't it? 00:04:20.10\00:04:21.66 It's awesome. 00:04:21.66\00:04:22.93 It's just this great song where he sings the genealogy, Andrew 00:04:22.93\00:04:25.23 Peterson. 00:04:25.23\00:04:26.03 You should check it out. 00:04:26.03\00:04:27.26 Anyway now look at verse 17 here's the point he's making he 00:04:27.26\00:04:30.50 said so all the generations from Abraham to David, these are the 00:04:30.50\00:04:35.23 key figures remember, are 14 generations. 00:04:35.23\00:04:38.00 And from David until the captivity in Babylon are 14 00:04:38.00\00:04:40.86 generations and from the captivity in Babylon until 00:04:40.86\00:04:43.50 Christ are 14 generations. 00:04:43.50\00:04:45.50 So in Matthew's thinking these are the high points. 00:04:45.50\00:04:48.73 Abraham is a high point, David is a high point, the Babylonian 00:04:48.73\00:04:52.06 captivity is a high point that's really a low point. 00:04:52.06\00:04:54.70 It's a high point in history but it's the low point of Israel's 00:04:54.70\00:04:57.03 experience because as we've already talked about the 00:04:57.03\00:04:59.76 fulfillment of the curse of Deuteronomy 27 to 30 if you do 00:04:59.76\00:05:02.56 this, this, this, this is what's gonna happen. 00:05:02.56\00:05:04.26 But it's interesting that he crafts this very purposefully in 00:05:04.26\00:05:07.46 3 groups of 14. 00:05:07.46\00:05:09.56 He says there was 14, there was 14, and there was 14. 00:05:09.56\00:05:14.23 Well what is that? 00:05:14.23\00:05:15.40 It's 6 groupings of 7. 00:05:15.40\00:05:18.63 Right? 00:05:18.63\00:05:19.90 There's 7/7, 7/7, 7/7 and this is hugely significant biblically 00:05:19.90\00:05:25.30 speaking because in scripture, of course the 7th day is the 00:05:25.30\00:05:29.86 Sabbath. 00:05:29.86\00:05:30.93 It's a day for rest. 00:05:30.93\00:05:32.06 It's a day for cessation from the normal activities. 00:05:32.06\00:05:34.70 But 7-7's right? 00:05:34.70\00:05:37.46 Then you have what's called the jubilee, right, the 50th year. 00:05:37.46\00:05:41.70 --Liberation. 00:05:41.70\00:05:42.93 --The liberation where debts, all debts were settled, all 00:05:42.93\00:05:46.60 slaves were set free. 00:05:46.60\00:05:48.36 --Land is returned. 00:05:48.36\00:05:49.36 --Think of it like a Sabbath on steroids, right? 00:05:49.36\00:05:51.70 So you have the Sabbath which is the 7th and then you have 7 of 00:05:51.70\00:05:54.46 those so it's 7 cycles of 7 this is the thing. 00:05:54.46\00:05:57.23 And Matthew's making a very important point here and that is 00:05:57.23\00:06:00.26 that there was the 7/7 the 7/7 the 7/7 and Jesus comes 00:06:00.26\00:06:05.23 introducing and inaugurating the jubilee. 00:06:05.23\00:06:10.06 --Yeah wow yeah. 00:06:10.06\00:06:11.46 --So here's a very interesting thing we'll just skip from 00:06:11.46\00:06:13.73 Matthew. 00:06:13.73\00:06:14.56 --Well I want to go back to Matthew. 00:06:14.56\00:06:15.56 --Yeah stay in Matthew, stay in Matthew. 00:06:15.56\00:06:17.13 -There's something that has to be, we have to call attention to 00:06:17.13\00:06:19.03 in chapter 1. 00:06:19.03\00:06:20.03 --Ok do it. 00:06:20.03\00:06:21.16 --And verse 21 so in the genealogy Matthew is basically 00:06:21.16\00:06:27.20 invoking the language of liberation, the language of 00:06:27.20\00:06:31.03 jubilee to describe who Jesus is and what he will do. 00:06:31.03\00:06:35.20 --It's the language of Exodus. 00:06:35.20\00:06:36.46 --Yes and the language. 00:06:36.46\00:06:38.10 --It's coming out, it's liberation, it's freedom. 00:06:38.10\00:06:39.43 -That's right so then in verse 21 and she will bring forth a 00:06:39.43\00:06:42.90 son, this is Matthew 1:21 bring forth a son and you shall call 00:06:42.90\00:06:47.66 his name Jesus for he will save his people from their sins. 00:06:47.66\00:06:52.30 This is fascinating. 00:06:52.30\00:06:53.56 The word that is used here, in the Greek, the word that Matthew 00:06:53.56\00:06:57.90 purposefully uses is the word sozo. 00:06:57.90\00:07:02.66 Now we think of salvation in a very limited sense. 00:07:02.66\00:07:06.36 --Some of us do. 00:07:06.36\00:07:07.56 --Yeah in our local, cultural, western, Christian way of 00:07:07.56\00:07:11.06 thinking. 00:07:11.06\00:07:12.26 We think salvation is basically getting out of punishment, 00:07:12.26\00:07:15.33 getting into heaven when we die. 00:07:15.33\00:07:17.83 So that's what 00:07:17.83\00:07:18.96 --Which is not the biblical way of thinking. 00:07:18.96\00:07:20.30 --Yeah not the biblical way of thinking, the word sozo 00:07:20.30\00:07:22.53 literally means liberation. 00:07:22.53\00:07:25.93 It means deliverance. 00:07:25.93\00:07:27.10 Jesus will deliver. 00:07:27.10\00:07:28.70 He will liberate. 00:07:28.70\00:07:29.93 Jesus is inaugurating a new exodus and he's leading people 00:07:29.93\00:07:34.30 into a new liberation. 00:07:34.30\00:07:36.93 So I just wanted to add that. 00:07:36.93\00:07:38.30 --No that's brilliant. 00:07:38.30\00:07:39.56 --The genealogies are invoking jubilee in Matthew's account. 00:07:39.56\00:07:43.70 --That's right. 00:07:43.70\00:07:44.66 --But jubilee for the purpose of liberation. 00:07:44.66\00:07:47.56 That's the point he's setting the captives free. 00:07:47.56\00:07:51.70 --And here's something that I love about that, thanks for 00:07:51.70\00:07:53.76 bringing that up about the sozo, I love that this is not Matthews 00:07:53.76\00:07:56.00 sort of, he's not laying this over. 00:07:56.00\00:07:59.86 This is not just his theological take away. 00:07:59.86\00:08:02.03 This is not something he's forcing in. 00:08:02.03\00:08:03.83 This is something he learned from Jesus himself. 00:08:03.83\00:08:06.06 This whole idea that Jesus, and I think that you're gonna take 00:08:06.06\00:08:08.73 us a little bit later to Jesus and Moses, Jesus and Moses. 00:08:08.73\00:08:10.76 If you go to Luke's account, Luke, in Luke chapter 4 he is 00:08:10.76\00:08:16.66 returned to his hometown, Nazareth and he goes into the 00:08:16.66\00:08:21.03 synagogue which we have no real equivalent for a synagogue, 00:08:21.03\00:08:24.33 church is really nothing like a synagogue. 00:08:24.33\00:08:27.33 The synagogue was not just the place of meeting for Jews. 00:08:27.33\00:08:30.10 It was a civic place. 00:08:30.10\00:08:31.60 It was a town hall. 00:08:31.60\00:08:32.53 It was just the place where people met. 00:08:32.53\00:08:34.90 It was certainly spiritual but it was not only a spiritual 00:08:34.90\00:08:39.16 building just a meeting place for the Jews. 00:08:39.16\00:08:41.26 And so it says here in verse 16 so he came to Nazareth where he 00:08:41.26\00:08:44.36 had been brought up, I'm in Luke 4, and as his custom was he went 00:08:44.36\00:08:46.56 into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and he stood up to 00:08:46.56\00:08:49.43 read. 00:08:49.43\00:08:50.66 Now this is, there's so much language here that's important 00:08:50.66\00:08:52.76 and he was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. 00:08:52.76\00:08:56.40 When he opened the book, now this is key, he found the place 00:08:56.40\00:08:59.46 where it was written. 00:08:59.46\00:09:00.76 Now almost certain they had assigned readings in the time. 00:09:00.76\00:09:02.30 So you know today's assigned reading was whatever Isaiah 12 00:09:02.30\00:09:04.93 or Isaiah 13. 00:09:04.93\00:09:06.06 So he's handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. 00:09:06.06\00:09:07.90 --He pre-empted maybe? 00:09:07.90\00:09:09.26 He found the place or they assigned it. 00:09:09.26\00:09:10.90 --No that's the point he found, it says he found the place. 00:09:10.90\00:09:14.50 So whatever the assigned reading may have been that day, when 00:09:14.50\00:09:17.33 they handed the scroll, and it wouldn't have been just as nice 00:09:17.33\00:09:19.30 and easy as us just looking at, these are large you know, 00:09:19.30\00:09:22.63 rabbinical scrolls. 00:09:22.63\00:09:23.93 And he's looking, it's huge. 00:09:23.93\00:09:27.23 --There's no verses 00:09:27.23\00:09:28.53 --No chapterization so he must have known, the point here is 00:09:28.53\00:09:31.63 that he had to know scripture to find it. 00:09:31.63\00:09:33.46 To find something in this large scroll where you're just trying 00:09:33.46\00:09:35.53 to remember oh yeah....so I like, in my mind's eye I like to 00:09:35.53\00:09:40.06 just see them all there, why isn't he reading the assigned 00:09:40.06\00:09:41.30 reading? 00:09:41.30\00:09:41.80 What? 00:09:41.80\00:09:42.60 And he's looking and he's looking. 00:09:42.60\00:09:43.70 --We assigned Malachi. 00:09:43.70\00:09:45.23 --Yeah that's right. 00:09:45.23\00:09:46.50 He, he found the place and then here verse 18 and he's actually 00:09:46.50\00:09:50.80 quoting from what we would call I think Isaiah 49. 00:09:50.80\00:09:53.70 What we, in other words after the versification, the 00:09:53.70\00:09:55.73 chapterization of scripture. 00:09:55.73\00:09:57.20 He finds the place. 00:09:57.20\00:09:58.23 --Or 61 isn't it. 00:09:58.23\00:09:59.23 --Is it 61? 00:09:59.23\00:10:00.36 You probably are correct. 00:10:00.36\00:10:01.33 --Go ahead just read it. 00:10:01.33\00:10:02.60 --The spirit of the, it is 61, the spirit of the Lord is upon 00:10:02.60\00:10:05.50 me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel that is to say 00:10:05.50\00:10:09.63 the good news to the poor. 00:10:09.63\00:10:11.20 He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim 00:10:11.20\00:10:13.76 liberty to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, 00:10:13.76\00:10:16.06 to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the 00:10:16.06\00:10:19.53 acceptable year of the Lord. 00:10:19.53\00:10:22.00 That's jubilee language. 00:10:22.00\00:10:23.23 --And he closed the book. 00:10:23.23\00:10:24.53 --I love this he closed the book and there must have been some 00:10:24.53\00:10:27.40 portant, something about the way that he read it or the way that 00:10:27.40\00:10:33.43 he carried himself because look at this, he gave it back to the 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.93 attendant and he sat down. 00:10:35.93\00:10:37.20 So all is well but watch this and the eyes of all who were in 00:10:37.20\00:10:40.40 the synagogue were fixed on him. 00:10:40.40\00:10:42.80 Something about his manner, the way he carried himself and then 00:10:42.80\00:10:45.56 look at this, he senses that, you know how it is when you're 00:10:45.56\00:10:47.90 in a room and you can just sense that everybody's looking at you. 00:10:47.90\00:10:50.50 What he says is mind blowing, verse 21 he began to say to 00:10:50.50\00:10:53.56 them today, now he's, he's just extracted a passage from 00:10:53.56\00:10:57.23 their history. 00:10:57.23\00:10:59.70 --It's bold. 00:10:59.70\00:11:00.40 --30 year old guy, Rabbi. 00:11:00.40\00:11:01.56 --Which would have been a huge passage to them. 00:11:01.56\00:11:03.73 --Hugely important. 00:11:03.73\00:11:04.80 --They knew what the implications were. 00:11:04.80\00:11:06.00 They're staring at him for a reason. 00:11:06.00\00:11:07.13 --To have the audacity to say today this passage is. 00:11:07.13\00:11:10.10 --And look at the word here today this scripture is 00:11:10.10\00:11:11.83 fulfilled in your hearing. 00:11:11.83\00:11:14.93 And that word right there fulfilled you could make a case 00:11:14.93\00:11:16.96 that that is the single most important word in all of the 00:11:16.96\00:11:19.53 gospels. 00:11:19.53\00:11:20.80 For Matthew, for Mark, for Luke and even for John that Jesus was 00:11:20.80\00:11:25.36 doing something that was bringing Israel's history to a 00:11:25.36\00:11:28.66 climax. 00:11:28.66\00:11:29.73 It was filling the old story, it was a new exodus. 00:11:29.73\00:11:32.93 --You know can I just I mean I hope we continue this theme of 00:11:32.93\00:11:36.73 the new exodus but there's all through the gospels there's 00:11:36.73\00:11:39.36 these little hints, you're talking about, fulfilled. 00:11:39.36\00:11:41.90 And some of them are more obvious than others and some of 00:11:41.90\00:11:44.90 them, I believe, I think Jesus had a sense of humor and 00:11:44.90\00:11:47.86 sometimes he would drop these things knowing that they had no 00:11:47.86\00:11:52.40 clue what he was saying but they would eventually figure it out. 00:11:52.40\00:11:55.73 One example of that if you guys will just in Matthew chapter 18 00:11:55.73\00:12:00.53 where he's talking to Peter in verse 21 Peter comes up to Jesus 00:12:00.53\00:12:04.56 and he says Lord how often shall my brother sin against me and I 00:12:04.56\00:12:09.63 forgive him? 00:12:09.63\00:12:10.96 Like should I do it 7 times? 00:12:10.96\00:12:13.46 Is what Peter asks and then in verse 22 Jesus says not 7 but up 00:12:13.46\00:12:20.00 to 70 times 7. 00:12:20.00\00:12:23.03 And this goes back to what you're saying so he pulls out 00:12:23.03\00:12:25.50 Isaiah, reads a messianic passage that was obviously a 00:12:25.50\00:12:29.23 messianic passage and says today this is fulfilled. 00:12:29.23\00:12:31.83 But he does it in sort of ways is here you could just imagine 00:12:31.83\00:12:35.70 Peter would walk, turn around, walked away like scratching his 00:12:35.70\00:12:39.36 head like 70 times 7 what in the world is he talking about? 00:12:39.36\00:12:44.96 But of course we have the prophesy in Daniel 9 where 00:12:44.96\00:12:48.80 Daniel, he's been praying and just remembering the covenant of 00:12:48.80\00:12:53.20 God and God gives a prophesy of 70 weeks 00:12:53.20\00:12:58.03 --which is 70 times 7. 00:12:58.03\00:13:00.66 --7 days in a week 70 times 7 when the Messiah would come 00:13:00.66\00:13:03.43 here's the word, fulfill the covenantal promises. 00:13:03.43\00:13:08.23 So I love these little things here where the text doesn't even 00:13:08.23\00:13:11.36 say that Peter got it. 00:13:11.36\00:13:12.73 He was just like uh, ok. 00:13:12.73\00:13:15.46 It could've been who knows how long afterwards till he got it. 00:13:15.46\00:13:19.13 --It was very good textural reason in the rest of the 00:13:19.13\00:13:20.76 gospels to believe he didn't get it. 00:13:20.76\00:13:22.03 I mean the disciples obviously did not understand the kingdom 00:13:22.03\00:13:25.53 of God or any of the prophesies of the Old Testament the way 00:13:25.53\00:13:29.60 that Jesus did. 00:13:29.60\00:13:30.86 --But here's an incredible thing though that I think is in the 00:13:30.86\00:13:33.63 passage Peter is asking a question about individual 00:13:33.63\00:13:39.20 forgiveness, how often should I forgive my brother right? 00:13:39.20\00:13:45.03 Individual forgiveness. 00:13:45.03\00:13:46.56 Jesus takes that question of individual forgiveness on the 00:13:46.56\00:13:51.66 horizontal level, human to human and then he turns in vertical by 00:13:51.66\00:13:57.13 referencing Daniel 9. 00:13:57.13\00:13:59.16 And he blows this thing up and he's basically saying he's 00:13:59.16\00:14:03.83 taking that experience and he's hinting at, he's indicating that 00:14:03.83\00:14:09.06 right now Peter while you're asking the question of 00:14:09.06\00:14:11.63 horizontal human to human forgiveness something monumental 00:14:11.63\00:14:16.56 is taking place and that is a vertical divine forgiveness to 00:14:16.56\00:14:22.90 the point of perfection. 00:14:22.90\00:14:24.30 And the number 7 indicates perfection. 00:14:24.30\00:14:26.90 I had a guy one time when he was struggling to forgive he said 00:14:26.90\00:14:31.46 you know I've seen this passage and I did the math I'm not 00:14:31.46\00:14:34.73 gonna...is that how many times and he was trying to get literal 00:14:34.73\00:14:37.80 with it. 00:14:37.80\00:14:39.06 Jesus is basically indicating a total and perfect atonement for 00:14:39.06\00:14:43.66 sin atonement perfect forgiveness and in the larger 00:14:43.66\00:14:47.73 context of the story a perfect liberation is under way, right 00:14:47.73\00:14:53.60 now in Christ. 00:14:53.60\00:14:54.80 And at the foundation of that liberation is forgiveness. 00:14:54.80\00:14:58.70 -That's right. 00:14:58.70\00:14:59.96 --So to dumb it down Jesus was saying treat others the way I 00:14:59.96\00:15:02.16 treat you. 00:15:02.16\00:15:04.00 --You know I love this too because when David was bringing 00:15:04.00\00:15:07.00 out Luke chapter 4 and we look at these passages the thing 00:15:07.00\00:15:11.50 that's startling about these passages and the way that Jesus 00:15:11.50\00:15:15.90 applies them is he's very inclusive of the Gentile 00:15:15.90\00:15:18.60 nations. 00:15:18.60\00:15:19.50 --Great point. 00:15:19.50\00:15:20.76 --First of all he applies the need to be liberated to the Jews 00:15:20.76\00:15:25.10 and that is, that is, that causes them to be indignant 00:15:25.10\00:15:27.86 "What do you mean we need to be liberated?" 00:15:27.86\00:15:29.13 Then he goes on to talk about how God has consistently and 00:15:29.13\00:15:33.26 continually been able and willing and eager to reach the 00:15:33.26\00:15:37.50 Gentiles and do things for the Gentiles when the Jews where 00:15:37.50\00:15:42.10 steadily abstinently separated from them. 00:15:42.10\00:15:43.76 You know what I'm saying, now this same thing is brought out 00:15:43.76\00:15:47.06 in John chapter 1 because you remember the whole story, the 00:15:47.06\00:15:49.93 whole story is that in the beginning Satan comes to Adam 00:15:49.93\00:15:53.26 and Eve and Satan completely eclipses the view of God, what 00:15:53.26\00:15:57.73 God is like, misrepresents him and all through the Old 00:15:57.73\00:16:01.03 Testament God is trying to re-introduce himself to the 00:16:01.03\00:16:04.40 human family. 00:16:04.40\00:16:05.46 And he does this to a specific nation, the Jews. 00:16:05.46\00:16:07.86 But Satan comes in subtly and misrepresents God over and over 00:16:07.86\00:16:12.20 again. 00:16:12.20\00:16:13.06 God is exclusive. 00:16:13.06\00:16:14.20 God loves us he doesn't love you. 00:16:14.20\00:16:16.10 You need to do this in order for God to love you and accept you. 00:16:16.10\00:16:18.40 And God is not like that at all. 00:16:18.40\00:16:20.46 So when John introduces this logos, this representation of 00:16:20.46\00:16:24.66 God that is going to dispel darkness, the darkness of the 00:16:24.66\00:16:28.30 character of God, this is what he does. 00:16:28.30\00:16:30.16 He said the word became flesh and dwelt among us. 00:16:30.16\00:16:34.90 This was the true light which lightens every man that comes 00:16:34.90\00:16:41.33 into the world. 00:16:41.33\00:16:42.73 And I think about this on my own experience because I was raised 00:16:42.73\00:16:45.60 Catholic, Roman Catholic and I didn't know anything about the 00:16:45.60\00:16:50.00 history of religion. 00:16:50.00\00:16:51.23 I didn't understand what Catholic and Protestism was all 00:16:51.23\00:16:54.30 about. 00:16:54.30\00:16:55.53 I didn't know any of that I was just raised Roman Catholic. 00:16:55.53\00:16:56.60 I was always on my mom's side. 00:16:56.60\00:16:58.13 But I was proud about that there was something, there was a way 00:16:58.13\00:17:01.46 that my mom used to say we're Catholic, Roman Catholic that 00:17:01.46\00:17:05.46 made me feel like I was better or in some category, I was part 00:17:05.46\00:17:09.43 of something. 00:17:09.43\00:17:10.66 I was in some category that, you know, and so I was proud of 00:17:10.66\00:17:12.86 that. 00:17:12.86\00:17:14.13 And then I remember years later of course I become a Protestant. 00:17:14.13\00:17:16.76 Well I didn't know I became a Protestant I just accepted 00:17:16.76\00:17:18.90 Christ. 00:17:18.90\00:17:19.80 --There ya go. 00:17:19.80\00:17:21.06 --And I gave up some of these things but there was something 00:17:21.06\00:17:22.56 again that in me that said I'm a Protestant. 00:17:22.56\00:17:25.83 I'm not a Catholic I'm a Protestant. 00:17:25.83\00:17:28.13 And then I became a Seventh Day Adventist. 00:17:28.13\00:17:30.43 --There's something in you that makes you. 00:17:30.43\00:17:32.53 --Well you've really arrived now. 00:17:32.53\00:17:35.43 --Really arrived now. 00:17:35.43\00:17:36.56 And then I started understanding the story. 00:17:36.56\00:17:40.66 The story that God is in love with the entire human race and 00:17:40.66\00:17:46.50 that I am simple a vessel, I am simply a channel through which 00:17:46.50\00:17:49.30 God wants to communicate this light and dispel this darkness 00:17:49.30\00:17:52.16 about his, his love, his search for man. 00:17:52.16\00:17:55.86 --I cannot tell you how deeply resonate I am with that because, 00:17:55.86\00:17:59.10 and I'll just kind of poke fun at my own church here a little 00:17:59.10\00:18:02.33 bit and not just poke fun but it's a rebuke I think, to me and 00:18:02.33\00:18:05.93 to my church and that is that, and even to the larger Christian 00:18:05.93\00:18:10.00 denomination. 00:18:10.00\00:18:10.93 We'll say things like is he an Adventist? 00:18:10.93\00:18:15.33 No he's a non-Adventist. 00:18:15.33\00:18:16.40 That shows, 00:18:16.40\00:18:17.10 --Is he born again? 00:18:17.10\00:18:17.76 --no he's not born again. 00:18:17.76\00:18:18.60 Is he a Christian? 00:18:18.60\00:18:19.80 No he's a non-Christian. 00:18:19.80\00:18:22.13 What it shows is that we divide people, as soon as you were 00:18:22.13\00:18:24.36 Catholic you're world was divided into 2 groups of people, 00:18:24.36\00:18:28.46 Catholics and non-Catholics. 00:18:28.46\00:18:30.16 --And not's. 00:18:30.16\00:18:31.06 --That's right. 00:18:31.06\00:18:32.33 And then he became a Protestant and your world, whether you knew 00:18:32.33\00:18:33.76 it or not, you didn't know you had become a Protestant but when 00:18:33.76\00:18:36.10 you did later figure that out there's Protestants and 00:18:36.10\00:18:38.10 non -Protestants and then even Adventists. 00:18:38.10\00:18:39.43 There's Adventists and non-Adventists where Jesus 00:18:39.43\00:18:41.53 doesn't see Jews and non-Jews. 00:18:41.53\00:18:45.23 He sees his children. 00:18:45.23\00:18:46.66 --The world. 00:18:46.66\00:18:47.73 --He sees the world. 00:18:47.73\00:18:48.93 And so I so love this that you're bringing this out because 00:18:48.93\00:18:51.83 you do see a universality there in Luke chapter 4 to proclaim 00:18:51.83\00:18:54.73 liberty to the captives. 00:18:54.73\00:18:56.60 The other thing I wanted to bring out about that and you 00:18:56.60\00:18:58.76 made a great point on this and it reminded me of something that 00:18:58.76\00:19:01.70 Jesus said. 00:19:01.70\00:19:02.93 When Jesus starts announcing this, when he starts using this 00:19:02.93\00:19:05.70 jubilee language and people frankly were upset with Jesus. 00:19:05.70\00:19:08.40 I mean he was a controversial figure because they way that he, 00:19:08.40\00:19:10.96 I'm gonna say it, re-interpreted the story. 00:19:10.96\00:19:14.80 He was telling a different story then the Rabbis were telling. 00:19:14.80\00:19:17.86 And when Jesus starts telling his version of the story they're 00:19:17.86\00:19:20.96 like, we don't need liberation. 00:19:20.96\00:19:23.30 We don't need, and when you said that the Jews are like we don't 00:19:23.30\00:19:25.90 need liberation, it reminded me of when Jesus is in this intense 00:19:25.90\00:19:28.26 dialogue, one of the most intense dialogues in scripture 00:19:28.26\00:19:31.06 in John chapter 8 and they're discussing fatherhood and the 00:19:31.06\00:19:34.46 truth shall make you free and this whole, I'm not going to get 00:19:34.46\00:19:36.60 into it. 00:19:36.60\00:19:37.73 But in the middle of it, talk about selective memory. 00:19:37.73\00:19:40.33 Some of the religious leaders say to Jesus in John chapter 8 00:19:40.33\00:19:43.26 verse 33 and they answered and said we are Abraham's 00:19:43.26\00:19:46.70 descendants and we have never been in bondage to anyone. 00:19:46.70\00:19:50.93 --Whoa. 00:19:50.93\00:19:51.70 --Wow. 00:19:51.70\00:19:53.26 [Laughter] 00:19:53.26\00:19:53.60 --What? 00:19:53.60\00:19:54.86 Not to Egypt, not to Assyria, not to Babylon, not to Greece, 00:19:54.86\00:20:00.53 not to Rome, not to the Persians. 00:20:00.53\00:20:01.43 --When have you not been? 00:20:01.43\00:20:02.30 --Yea that's the point. 00:20:02.30\00:20:03.16 It's like really? 00:20:03.16\00:20:04.36 --How about Rome in the present tense? 00:20:04.36\00:20:05.86 --Of course how could they have been so 00:20:05.86\00:20:07.30 --He could have said do you know where you are? 00:20:07.30\00:20:09.90 --I know. 00:20:09.90\00:20:11.16 --This to me is a great example of how when the facts be damned 00:20:11.16\00:20:15.03 if we have a perspective. 00:20:15.03\00:20:16.96 --Can I add one thing to this though? 00:20:16.96\00:20:18.60 --Yes, please. 00:20:18.60\00:20:19.86 --Jesus in John chapter 8 again does this remarkable thing like 00:20:19.86\00:20:23.66 we were pointing out in the Matthew text, 70 times 7, where 00:20:23.66\00:20:26.86 Jesus takes the human level and then he blows it up to a cosmic 00:20:26.86\00:20:31.16 pardent that's underway, a cosmic forgiveness that is for 00:20:31.16\00:20:34.73 the whole human race. 00:20:34.73\00:20:35.76 Well he does the same thing here. 00:20:35.76\00:20:37.10 They're thinking we've never been in bondage to anybody. 00:20:37.10\00:20:39.63 They're thinking on the national level on the human level and 00:20:39.63\00:20:43.86 Jesus says your captivity is deeper than you know. 00:20:43.86\00:20:49.13 --That's right. 00:20:49.13\00:20:50.30 --You're of your father, you think that Abraham is your 00:20:50.30\00:20:52.83 father, you're of your father verse 44, the devil. 00:20:52.83\00:20:56.46 You are in captivity in a way on a level to a death that you're 00:20:56.46\00:21:01.86 not even aware of. 00:21:01.86\00:21:04.83 And then Jesus says hey the reason you are, the reason I 00:21:04.83\00:21:09.46 know you are in captivity to the devil is because he was a 00:21:09.46\00:21:11.66 murderer from the beginning and you're plotting my murder. 00:21:11.66\00:21:14.43 Violence is in your picture of God. 00:21:14.43\00:21:20.40 You think you're serving God by perpetrating violence against me 00:21:20.40\00:21:23.80 and others. 00:21:23.80\00:21:25.43 But that violence reveals that your picture of God is 00:21:25.43\00:21:28.80 completely distorted and this is so amazing. 00:21:28.80\00:21:32.06 He's essentially saying to them you on the conscience level of 00:21:32.06\00:21:35.63 your mind think that you're worshipping God simultaneously 00:21:35.63\00:21:39.66 the character traits you ascribe to him prove that you're 00:21:39.66\00:21:42.73 worshipping the devil while applying the name capital F of 00:21:42.73\00:21:46.86 God the Father. 00:21:46.86\00:21:48.50 --He definitely wasn't looking for a popular. 00:21:48.50\00:21:51.30 --No, no, no, no. 00:21:51.30\00:21:51.86 --He wasn't looking for 00:21:51.86\00:21:52.50 --You see what I'm saying? 00:21:52.50\00:21:53.76 --Not only do I see what you are saying but they saw what Jesus 00:21:53.76\00:21:55.63 --Oh they saw it. 00:21:55.63\00:21:56.86 --Well they did because their response look at it verse 40 00:21:56.86\00:21:58.90 you, when you start to lose an argument, when somebody starts 00:21:58.90\00:22:01.70 to lose an argument, when their case is not logically or 00:22:01.70\00:22:04.60 evidentially sustainable what do they do? 00:22:04.60\00:22:05.93 They start saying well you, it's called ad hominy. 00:22:05.93\00:22:08.96 So look at this verse 48 this is their answer when Jesus is 00:22:08.96\00:22:11.70 bringing out this larger bondage that you are describing, didn't 00:22:11.70\00:22:16.93 we say that you were a Samaritan, you got a demon. 00:22:16.93\00:22:18.46 In other words they couldn't even deal with the force of his 00:22:18.46\00:22:21.43 logic and the force of the evidence that he was bringing to 00:22:21.43\00:22:23.80 bear. 00:22:23.80\00:22:24.90 And they were like. 00:22:24.90\00:22:25.90 --Basically they say you're possessed. 00:22:25.90\00:22:28.76 --They are trying to shrug him off. 00:22:28.76\00:22:30.16 --The thing I, and I know we have to take a break here but 00:22:31.16\00:22:33.40 the thing I want to close with and this is so important is if 00:22:33.40\00:22:36.26 you're dealing with anybody who's addictive or who has a 00:22:36.26\00:22:38.63 problem whether it's alcohol or drugs or just a problem, any 00:22:38.63\00:22:41.50 kind of a problem, it is axiomatically the case that you 00:22:41.50\00:22:45.20 cannot get help for those kinds of things until you recognize 00:22:45.20\00:22:49.23 that you have a problem. 00:22:49.23\00:22:51.70 So Jesus here is like hey you're free, the son shall make you 00:22:51.70\00:22:53.90 free, which is John 8 you shall be free indeed. 00:22:53.90\00:22:55.63 And they're like what do we need to be free for? 00:22:55.63\00:22:57.03 --Yeah we don't have a problem. 00:22:57.03\00:22:58.10 --We don't even see it. 00:22:58.10\00:22:58.83 --Free from what? 00:22:58.83\00:22:59.96 --So Jesus is constantly scanning the horizon, this is 00:22:59.96\00:23:02.80 much of the story that the gospels are telling, scanning 00:23:02.80\00:23:05.40 looking for people who get it. 00:23:05.40\00:23:07.43 And the only people that he can get in the beginning to buy into 00:23:07.43\00:23:09.93 his telling of the story is some fishermen, a tax collector, I 00:23:09.93\00:23:13.60 mean it's just like, he's at the dreads, he's scraping the bottom 00:23:13.60\00:23:16.43 of the barrel just to get somebody to buy into it. 00:23:16.43\00:23:18.83 --But the people that are most religious are most insulated, 00:23:18.83\00:23:22.90 those who are most in the paradigm that we're it, we're 00:23:22.90\00:23:31.20 the people of God are the ones that are most blind which comes 00:23:31.20\00:23:33.86 back to a point we made yesterday and that is that the 00:23:33.86\00:23:36.23 best place in the world to hide from God is religion. 00:23:36.23\00:23:38.80 That's the best place to take cover because as we quoted from 00:23:38.80\00:23:45.56 Jeremiah there is an inheritance of lies in this great 00:23:45.56\00:23:49.76 controversy. 00:23:49.76\00:23:51.86 We do need to take a break but boy this is pretty exciting what 00:23:51.86\00:23:53.30 we're learning. 00:23:53.30\00:23:54.43 Hi I'm Ty Gibson welcome to Digma.com. 00:24:06.53\00:24:08.20 I am so excited about this website because you're about to 00:24:08.20\00:24:12.63 discover a powerful new way to share life transforming messages 00:24:12.63\00:24:17.23 and basically means to show or to reveal something by means of a 00:24:25.90\00:24:29.86 pattern or an example of some kind. 00:24:29.86\00:24:32.03 It's the second half of paradigma from which we get the 00:24:32.66\00:24:36.43 English word paradigm as in paradigm shift. 00:24:36.43\00:24:40.10 And so what you're going to find at digma.com is a growing 00:24:41.06\00:24:43.46 library of short videos and transcripts dealing with 00:24:43.46\00:24:46.76 paradigms and fundamental questions. 00:24:46.76\00:24:49.96 What's the meaning of life? 00:24:50.50\00:24:52.13 What is our origin and destiny as human beings? 00:24:52.76\00:24:55.73 What happens when we die? 00:24:56.46\00:24:58.36 Does God exist or are we alone in this vast universe? 00:24:58.90\00:25:02.43 Why is there so much evil and suffering in our world? 00:25:03.20\00:25:07.00 An estimated 70% of Americans have a computer right in their 00:25:07.63\00:25:11.96 home and stay in touch with family and friends by email. 00:25:11.96\00:25:16.23 And more than 400 million people are active on Facebook and 5 00:25:16.23\00:25:21.03 million new users are signing up every week. 00:25:21.03\00:25:25.36 We are literally in the midst of a communications revolution of 00:25:25.36\00:25:30.33 massive proportion. 00:25:30.33\00:25:32.13 This is granting the gospel direct and easy access to 00:25:32.13\00:25:36.90 millions upon millions of homes and hearts. 00:25:36.90\00:25:41.46 And that's what digma.com is all about. 00:25:41.46\00:25:44.93 Its tool for leading our family and friends on an exciting 00:25:44.93\00:25:48.93 paradigm shift by revealing the truth of God's creative power 00:25:48.93\00:25:53.86 and his incredibly beautiful character in contrast to our 00:25:53.86\00:25:58.46 world's popular misconceptions about who God is. 00:25:58.46\00:26:04.66 Jeffrey during the break you were just chomping at the bit 00:26:15.36\00:26:17.83 with some exciting point in the gospel of John that continues 00:26:17.83\00:26:21.86 the application of Jesus to ancient Israel. 00:26:21.86\00:26:27.86 I don't know what the point was. 00:26:27.86\00:26:29.23 --Well I even not even continuing the application I 00:26:29.23\00:26:32.16 think it sets the stage for everything we're saying and 00:26:32.16\00:26:34.96 everything that I'm thinking we'll get to say. 00:26:34.96\00:26:37.26 Because when Jesus comes what we're establishing here is he's 00:26:37.26\00:26:42.13 coming as the covenant. 00:26:42.13\00:26:43.46 I think we established that Isaiah 42 something. 00:26:43.46\00:26:47.70 --Yeah 42 00:26:47.70\00:26:48.66 --That the Messiah will be the covenant. 00:26:48.66\00:26:51.70 He's not coming to bring a covenant. 00:26:51.70\00:26:53.43 He is the covenant. 00:26:53.43\00:26:54.70 So when you look at the gospels they're telling a story and I 00:26:54.70\00:26:57.40 love this very simple point in John chapter 2 where we find the 00:26:57.40\00:27:02.96 story of the wedding at Cana and when Jesus attends this wedding 00:27:02.96\00:27:08.20 and he performs his first miracle. 00:27:08.20\00:27:13.16 John chapter 2 verse 11 says this is the beginning of signs 00:27:13.16\00:27:17.90 that Jesus did while in Cana of Galilee and he manifested his 00:27:17.90\00:27:22.93 glory and his disciples believed in him. 00:27:22.93\00:27:26.43 So here's the point. 00:27:26.43\00:27:28.06 The first miracle Jesus performs, we can say the first 00:27:28.06\00:27:31.16 public manifestation, this is like his introduction. 00:27:31.16\00:27:36.76 Hello my name is Jesus the Messiah pleasure to meet you, to 00:27:36.76\00:27:39.70 the whole world, right? 00:27:39.70\00:27:41.03 And to history he does that, he selects a marriage, a marriage 00:27:41.03\00:27:47.00 ceremony. 00:27:47.00\00:27:48.26 I think that's profound because what sets the tone for the rest 00:27:48.26\00:27:51.20 of his life is the marriage motif and what is a marriage? 00:27:51.20\00:27:54.83 It is an event, a ceremony celebrating a covenant that is 00:27:54.83\00:28:00.40 entered into by two parties. 00:28:00.40\00:28:02.46 So Christ begins his whole earthly ministry at a ceremony 00:28:02.46\00:28:08.10 that represents a covenant. 00:28:08.10\00:28:09.83 And that takes a symbolic meaning that everything that we 00:28:09.83\00:28:13.03 read on the life of Christ is preaching which we'll get into, 00:28:13.03\00:28:15.96 his miracles, his healing. 00:28:15.96\00:28:17.96 Everything he does is just an acted out, an acting out of the 00:28:17.96\00:28:24.10 covenant between God and man that Christ is coming to 00:28:24.10\00:28:27.30 represent. 00:28:27.30\00:28:28.36 --Jeffrey it's even more explicit in the immediate 00:28:28.36\00:28:30.76 context here because if you loop back to chapter one of John 00:28:30.76\00:28:34.73 you're calling our attention to chapter 2 verse 11 first miracle 00:28:34.73\00:28:39.26 at the wedding feast. 00:28:39.26\00:28:41.36 Go back to chapter one verse 29 when Jesus is first entering 00:28:41.36\00:28:46.50 onto the stage of public ministry. 00:28:46.50\00:28:49.16 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, well that's 00:28:49.16\00:28:52.80 verse 29 behold the Lamb of God but that's not the one I'm 00:28:52.80\00:28:54.63 looking for. 00:28:54.63\00:28:55.53 --35? 00:28:55.53\00:28:56.36 --No the bridegroom one where is it? 00:28:56.36\00:28:58.83 Where is it, where is it? 00:28:58.83\00:29:00.10 It's in, oh man, Jesus is introduced as a bridegroom in, 00:29:00.10\00:29:09.60 it's there. 00:29:09.60\00:29:11.26 --Is it in John one? 00:29:11.26\00:29:13.86 --Actually it's in chapter 3. 00:29:14.63\00:29:17.03 So Jeffrey it's after the marriage feast, the miracle at 00:29:17.03\00:29:21.16 the wedding feast and look at chapter 3 and verse 29 John the 00:29:21.16\00:29:27.16 Baptist is basically acknowledging Jesus in a certain 00:29:27.16\00:29:31.03 character. 00:29:31.03\00:29:32.16 He who has the bridegroom, he who has the bride is the 00:29:32.16\00:29:36.16 bridegroom but the friend of the bridegroom who stands and hears 00:29:36.16\00:29:39.76 him rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. 00:29:39.76\00:29:43.53 Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. 00:29:43.53\00:29:46.40 Here's what's happening 00:29:46.40\00:29:47.36 --There's the word fulfilled again. 00:29:47.36\00:29:48.33 --Yeah there's the word fulfilled too. 00:29:48.33\00:29:49.60 But here's what's happening here Jesus has performed this miracle 00:29:49.60\00:29:52.43 at the wedding feast earlier but now John the Baptist basically 00:29:52.43\00:29:56.70 is being questioned by his disciples, those who he's been 00:29:56.70\00:29:59.63 teaching. 00:29:59.63\00:30:00.70 Hey are you the one we're looking for? 00:30:00.70\00:30:03.00 Are you the Messiah, basically and John the Baptist 00:30:03.00\00:30:05.56 interestingly he says no, no, no, no I'm just the best man. 00:30:05.56\00:30:09.96 --Yeah there you go. 00:30:09.96\00:30:10.83 --I'm the friend of the bridegroom. 00:30:10.83\00:30:13.10 But the one who has come for the bride, that's Jesus. 00:30:13.10\00:30:16.36 So in explicit language just like you were saying Jeffrey 00:30:16.36\00:30:20.06 Jesus is entering public ministry as a groom searching 00:30:20.06\00:30:24.96 for his bride. 00:30:24.96\00:30:26.10 He's come to establish covenantal love with his people. 00:30:26.10\00:30:29.86 Isn't that incredible. 00:30:29.86\00:30:30.56 --It is. 00:30:30.56\00:30:31.40 That's awesome. 00:30:31.40\00:30:32.63 --Right there in John 3 I've always loved this and I think it 00:30:32.63\00:30:35.00 continues to paint the picture of the kind of person that Jesus 00:30:35.00\00:30:38.40 was. 00:30:38.40\00:30:39.66 At the end of verse 26 I just read verse 26, they came to John 00:30:39.66\00:30:42.50 and they said Rabbi he who was with you beyond the Jordan to 00:30:42.50\00:30:45.43 whom you testified, behold he is baptizing and everyone is coming 00:30:45.43\00:30:48.70 to him all are coming to him, this is the report of their 00:30:48.70\00:30:50.70 disciples to John. 00:30:50.70\00:30:51.83 Man your decreasing in popularity and he's increasing 00:30:51.83\00:30:54.40 in popularity. 00:30:54.40\00:30:55.56 And then of course he says famously no man can receive 00:30:55.56\00:30:57.00 anything unless it be given him from heaven. 00:30:57.00\00:30:59.16 But then jump down to verse 32 it is an interesting little just 00:30:59.16\00:31:01.70 in position here. 00:31:01.70\00:31:03.20 John continuing to speak and he says and what he has seen, he 00:31:03.20\00:31:06.56 declares what he has seen and heard that's what he's talking 00:31:06.56\00:31:09.13 about, he testifies. 00:31:09.13\00:31:10.23 Look at this and yet no one received his testimony. 00:31:10.23\00:31:12.00 That is to say no one is believing what he is saying. 00:31:12.00\00:31:14.70 So what a fascinating little contrast here. 00:31:14.70\00:31:17.53 He says everybody is going out to see this guy but nobody 00:31:17.53\00:31:19.93 believes what he is saying. 00:31:19.93\00:31:21.60 Because he's popular, he's provocative, he's performing 00:31:21.60\00:31:24.56 miracles. 00:31:24.56\00:31:25.76 There's something new, there's something fresh about him. 00:31:25.76\00:31:27.90 The people aren't buying it. 00:31:27.90\00:31:29.06 This doesn't sound like the Rabbi. 00:31:29.06\00:31:30.60 This doesn't sound, we've not heard this version of the 00:31:30.60\00:31:33.16 stories. 00:31:33.16\00:31:34.43 I've always loved it, he's super popular but super misunderstood. 00:31:34.43\00:31:37.53 In fact, just very briefly and I know we're gonna go there but 00:31:37.53\00:31:41.20 just really makes this point. 00:31:41.20\00:31:43.00 After Jesus gives the Sermon on the Mount, we'll kind of move 00:31:43.00\00:31:46.46 back to and go to that. 00:31:46.46\00:31:47.86 I love that Matthew records in Matthew chapter 7 the response 00:31:47.86\00:31:52.40 of the people to Jesus radically new, radically different 00:31:52.40\00:31:56.10 teaching. 00:31:56.10\00:31:57.30 In John, excuse me Matthew chapter 7, this is after Jesus 00:31:57.30\00:32:00.16 first public address, so we have the first miracle, his first 00:32:00.16\00:32:03.26 public address and they're just like what was that. 00:32:03.26\00:32:06.40 Look what he says in verse 28 and so it was when Jesus had 00:32:06.40\00:32:09.76 ended these sayings that the people were astonished at his 00:32:09.76\00:32:13.93 teaching. 00:32:13.93\00:32:14.86 For he taught, why? 00:32:14.86\00:32:15.96 Why were they astonished? 00:32:15.96\00:32:17.23 Because he taught them as one having authority and not as the 00:32:17.23\00:32:18.83 scribes. 00:32:18.83\00:32:20.43 That is to say they've never heard this version of the story. 00:32:20.43\00:32:24.03 At this point in first century Judaism there is a longing for a 00:32:24.03\00:32:27.76 Messiah. 00:32:27.76\00:32:28.90 There is a longing for deliverance but the deliverance 00:32:28.90\00:32:30.16 that they're longing for is from Rome, it's from oppression and 00:32:30.16\00:32:34.40 they really think that there's gonna be a military. 00:32:34.40\00:32:37.46 --Merely physical. 00:32:37.46\00:32:38.56 --That's right a governmental, national liberation. 00:32:38.56\00:32:43.06 And Jesus comes and he's dealing with it, as you said, on a whole 00:32:43.06\00:32:45.06 nother level, a whole different, like sub terrain and he's gone 00:32:45.06\00:32:48.43 underneath and they're just like who is this guy and why is he? 00:32:48.43\00:32:53.03 But there was something that was attractive about him something 00:32:53.03\00:32:55.46 that was beautiful, something that was simple and 00:32:55.46\00:32:56.96 nonpretentious and accessible, 00:32:56.96\00:32:58.76 couple that with the healings and the miracles 00:32:58.76\00:33:01.16 and Jesus was profoundly popular but in a really unassuming and 00:33:01.16\00:33:06.66 humble way. 00:33:06.66\00:33:08.16 So he 00:33:08.16\00:33:09.33 --So that was what was so popular and attractive about 00:33:09.33\00:33:10.26 him. 00:33:10.26\00:33:11.46 --That's right he was attractive but grossly misunderstood. 00:33:11.46\00:33:13.16 What are you saying because years of rabbinical 00:33:13.16\00:33:16.60 interpretation, centuries we should say of incorrect 00:33:16.60\00:33:19.50 rabbinical interpretation is just clogging the heads of the 00:33:19.50\00:33:23.16 religious people so that when Jesus finally starts to call 00:33:23.16\00:33:26.40 people he can just you know as we said scrape up a few 00:33:26.40\00:33:29.06 fishermen here a tax collector ok now I can start with 00:33:29.06\00:33:32.90 something that's largely fresh. 00:33:32.90\00:33:35.00 --Essentially what we're saying is that, is that there is no 00:33:35.00\00:33:39.30 sharp break between the Old Testament and the New Testament. 00:33:39.30\00:33:44.50 We're dealing here with more of a continuum. 00:33:44.50\00:33:47.73 And Jesus steps on the stage of human history to fulfill, to 00:33:47.73\00:33:56.23 fill in the story that is Israel's history but to redeem 00:33:56.23\00:34:02.53 and to reconcile and to achieve success and victory on every 00:34:02.53\00:34:09.16 level then there was failure to be the one truly successful 00:34:09.16\00:34:14.43 covenantal successful Israelite. 00:34:14.43\00:34:17.83 I don't like the word successful but you know what I'm saying. 00:34:17.83\00:34:19.76 --I don't mind that word. 00:34:19.76\00:34:20.70 I like it. 00:34:20.70\00:34:21.60 --Yeah, so he's fulfilling covenant. 00:34:21.60\00:34:24.03 I think we need to understand that. 00:34:24.03\00:34:26.43 This is what we're realizing Jesus is coming and point by 00:34:26.43\00:34:29.43 point he's fulfilling covenant faithfulness. 00:34:29.43\00:34:33.80 --We went in our, I think it was in our last session, we went 00:34:33.80\00:34:37.00 through those points, some of those points. 00:34:37.00\00:34:38.83 --It was kind of Hodge podge. 00:34:38.83\00:34:40.13 --But we covered. 00:34:40.13\00:34:41.63 --It would be great if we covered it again. 00:34:41.63\00:34:43.10 --Maybe we should do that. 00:34:43.10\00:34:43.96 --Yeah in order we should move through. 00:34:43.96\00:34:45.40 So where does it begin Jesus is, he's born, we call it the 00:34:45.40\00:34:49.73 incarnation then what? 00:34:49.73\00:34:52.46 --In terms of the recapitulation of Israel's history? 00:34:52.46\00:34:54.33 --Yeah, yeah. 00:34:54.33\00:34:55.56 --Well the circumstances around his birth involve man named 00:34:55.56\00:34:59.96 Joseph who's his earthly father having dreams and the dream is 00:34:59.96\00:35:03.60 essentially an angel appearing to him saying take the child 00:35:03.60\00:35:06.86 into Egypt. 00:35:06.86\00:35:08.86 Right? 00:35:09.10\00:35:10.33 Get the child away from here because someone's going to hurt 00:35:10.33\00:35:12.00 him. 00:35:12.00\00:35:13.26 In fact, we'll just pick it up in verse Matthew 2, if we want 00:35:13.26\00:35:17.93 to go through this chronologically which I think we 00:35:17.93\00:35:19.96 should. 00:35:19.96\00:35:21.23 I think this, to me this is a point I didn't understand this 00:35:21.23\00:35:22.76 until I'd been a believer for about 10 years. 00:35:22.76\00:35:25.50 --That's a crime. 00:35:25.50\00:35:26.73 This should have been one of the very first things that I was 00:35:26.73\00:35:28.83 taught and was explained to me hey this is, as you said it's 00:35:28.83\00:35:32.33 not like Old Testament, that mean old scary God doing all 00:35:32.33\00:35:35.13 those, you know arbitrary, and then here's the nice new 00:35:35.13\00:35:37.43 graceful God there's just absolute continuity. 00:35:37.43\00:35:40.03 And the more that we can get that into the minds of fellow 00:35:40.03\00:35:43.63 believers that's, look for the thread. 00:35:43.63\00:35:46.06 --Not only more do we get it into our mind David but it will 00:35:46.06\00:35:49.20 redefine in many ways what we call salvation and how we 00:35:49.20\00:35:55.30 understand the gospel. 00:35:55.30\00:35:56.70 --I heard a preacher say one time and I think he was exactly 00:35:56.70\00:35:59.76 onto it that this is the most useless page in all the Bible. 00:35:59.76\00:36:03.06 That this page right here, this page, what it, there's nothing 00:36:03.06\00:36:07.10 on it. 00:36:07.10\00:36:07.90 There's no text on it right? 00:36:07.90\00:36:09.86 In other words there's no scripture on it. 00:36:09.86\00:36:11.20 That page right there what's it doing there? 00:36:11.20\00:36:13.76 It's, I know I was tempted. 00:36:13.76\00:36:15.43 [Laughter] 00:36:15.43\00:36:17.13 What is this page doing here? 00:36:17.13\00:36:20.76 It communicates discontinuity, psychologically it's saying that 00:36:20.76\00:36:26.50 there's that and there's this. 00:36:26.50\00:36:27.76 --And psychologically there's something to the fact that you 00:36:27.76\00:36:29.36 can't do it. 00:36:29.36\00:36:30.13 --There's no reverence for it. 00:36:30.13\00:36:31.80 [Laughter] 00:36:31.80\00:36:33.40 --We want so badly 00:36:33.40\00:36:34.30 --That's because of 00:36:34.30\00:36:35.16 --you still haven't transitioned. 00:36:35.16\00:36:36.96 --You're tempting me, you're tempting me. 00:36:36.96\00:36:38.46 --So it's a transition now. 00:36:38.46\00:36:40.00 What, what, what, what, forget transition the continuum 00:36:40.00\00:36:43.83 --The continuum 00:36:43.83\00:36:45.03 --Yeah what's going on there. 00:36:45.03\00:36:46.16 We've located our bearings in none other than Egypt. 00:36:46.16\00:36:49.56 --Matthew chapter 2 verse 13 now when they had departed behold an 00:36:49.56\00:36:52.73 angle of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream arise, take 00:36:52.73\00:36:55.66 the child and his mother flea to Egypt and stay there until I 00:36:55.66\00:36:59.03 bring you word. 00:36:59.03\00:37:00.33 For Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 00:37:00.33\00:37:02.23 That is very similar to what happened in national Israel's 00:37:02.23\00:37:06.96 history. 00:37:06.96\00:37:08.23 --By the way, by the way if you want biblical evidence for the 00:37:08.23\00:37:11.20 continuum let's just go back to the genealogy. 00:37:11.20\00:37:13.83 --K. 00:37:13.83\00:37:15.10 --I'm not saying genealogy, I'm just saying the genealogy is the 00:37:15.10\00:37:18.10 reason for the continuum. 00:37:18.10\00:37:19.66 --There ya go. 00:37:19.66\00:37:20.46 --There it is. 00:37:20.46\00:37:21.73 It is actually going back to the Old Testament and saying here we 00:37:21.73\00:37:23.90 go. 00:37:23.90\00:37:25.10 And it just moves...and it doesn't come to the part where 00:37:25.10\00:37:26.66 ok let's stop here and put in a new chapter. 00:37:26.66\00:37:29.10 It is the reason for the continuum. 00:37:29.10\00:37:31.83 --I'm getting so tempted, here's what I'm gonna do. 00:37:31.83\00:37:33.76 I'm just gonna fold it in half. 00:37:33.76\00:37:35.20 That page I'm just gonna fold it in half. 00:37:35.20\00:37:37.80 There we go. 00:37:37.80\00:37:40.33 So it's not entirely gone but it's mostly gone. 00:37:40.33\00:37:43.76 I just can't bring myself to. 00:37:43.76\00:37:45.53 --It's ready, it's ready. 00:37:45.53\00:37:48.93 --Laying the ax to the root. 00:37:48.93\00:37:50.03 -- You were saying it's very similar 00:37:50.03\00:37:51.70 --Very similar to national Israel because you have Abraham, 00:37:51.70\00:37:54.26 Isaac, Jacob, the descendants of Jacob, the 12 tribes, Joseph. 00:37:54.26\00:37:57.43 Joseph was a dreamer of dreams and a seer of visions. 00:37:57.43\00:38:00.96 His brothers hated him. 00:38:00.96\00:38:02.76 Many of us know the story of Joseph and the coat of many 00:38:02.76\00:38:04.56 colors. 00:38:04.56\00:38:05.83 But all of this happens because he begins to have these dreams. 00:38:05.83\00:38:08.43 And the dreams are that a famine is coming in the land and his 00:38:08.43\00:38:11.60 family needs to move to Egypt. 00:38:11.60\00:38:14.20 There's a death threat and there's safety there. 00:38:14.20\00:38:16.66 Right and so we have the same thing. 00:38:16.66\00:38:18.20 --Now we have another Joseph here. 00:38:18.20\00:38:19.46 --We have a Joseph having dreams saying hey this is a dangerous 00:38:19.46\00:38:21.26 situation. 00:38:21.26\00:38:21.93 Death threat, get into. 00:38:21.93\00:38:23.20 --Last program we talked about, last conversation we talked 00:38:23.20\00:38:25.86 about just the verse 15 there out of Egypt I have called my 00:38:25.86\00:38:28.83 son. 00:38:28.83\00:38:29.73 --Ok so that's next thing I would say. 00:38:29.73\00:38:31.00 So the first one that they're called into Egypt and then God 00:38:31.00\00:38:34.40 appears to Moses and says hey go tell Pharaoh, and here it is, to 00:38:34.40\00:38:39.40 let my 00:38:39.40\00:38:40.56 --people 00:38:40.56\00:38:41.80 --not just my people but my son, my first, well who is Jesus? 00:38:41.80\00:38:44.93 --Singular. 00:38:44.93\00:38:45.83 --He's the son of God. 00:38:45.83\00:38:47.86 Let my son go. 00:38:47.86\00:38:48.90 So number one called in. 00:38:48.90\00:38:50.16 --Yeah but let's just, can we just go along that for a minute? 00:38:50.16\00:38:52.06 --Yeah do it. 00:38:52.06\00:38:53.33 --When Jesus is called the son of God we speak those words so 00:38:53.33\00:38:56.80 easily and almost everybody who's familiar with the Bible at 00:38:56.80\00:39:00.30 all and definitely all believers refer to Jesus as the son of 00:39:00.30\00:39:03.43 God. 00:39:03.43\00:39:05.13 But we need to ground our minds in the fact that that language 00:39:05.13\00:39:08.73 the fact that Jesus is the son of God is a direct reference to 00:39:08.73\00:39:12.20 Jesus being the son of God in the sense that he is Israel. 00:39:12.20\00:39:16.00 --That's right. 00:39:16.00\00:39:16.73 Absolutely 00:39:16.73\00:39:17.50 --And he is 00:39:17.50\00:39:18.36 --And he's Adam. 00:39:18.36\00:39:19.30 --The son of God has a name. 00:39:19.30\00:39:20.40 --Very few people would make that connection. 00:39:20.40\00:39:21.63 --And his name is Israel. 00:39:21.63\00:39:22.86 --By the way here's another interesting point and that is 00:39:22.86\00:39:24.73 that Jesus is conceived out of a miracle birth. 00:39:24.73\00:39:29.36 Now go back to Isaac, go back to Jacob. 00:39:29.36\00:39:34.60 --Yeah, yeah, yeah this is miraculous. 00:39:34.60\00:39:35.76 --Abrahams a miraculous birth. 00:39:35.76\00:39:39.76 Jacob. 00:39:39.76\00:39:40.70 --Abraham is a miraculous birth? 00:39:40.70\00:39:42.43 --Has, has, 00:39:42.43\00:39:43.73 --Oh got it. 00:39:43.73\00:39:44.33 --Jacob 00:39:44.33\00:39:45.40 --So Isaac is the miraculous birth. 00:39:45.40\00:39:47.23 --Same thing, all the way through you have one miraculous 00:39:47.23\00:39:50.13 birth after and the parallel is right here. 00:39:50.13\00:39:52.10 --That's interesting. 00:39:52.10\00:39:53.10 --Ok guys right there push the pause button. 00:39:53.10\00:39:54.66 We don't want to but push the pause button and we're gonna 00:39:54.66\00:39:59.16 come right back after the break and continue these parallels. 00:39:59.16\00:40:00.93 Digma videos are short engaging messages designed for opening up 00:40:08.43\00:40:12.33 discussion with Simply ask for Digma DVD 3. 00:40:50.26\00:40:52.10 So we're looking at the parallels between Jesus and 00:40:55.90\00:40:59.30 Israel's history and we've seen that we're oriented in Egypt and 00:40:59.30\00:41:03.46 then Jesus comes out of Egypt. 00:41:03.46\00:41:06.20 So the language here is deliberately giving us the sense 00:41:06.20\00:41:10.76 that a new Exodus is taking place. 00:41:10.76\00:41:13.86 --That's right. 00:41:13.86\00:41:15.13 --Jesus immediately coming into public ministry does something 00:41:15.13\00:41:19.13 specific. 00:41:19.13\00:41:20.90 He's baptized and the baptism of Jesus runs parallel to Israel as 00:41:20.90\00:41:28.40 a nation corporate Israel marching through the Red Sea 00:41:28.40\00:41:32.43 into the wilderness. 00:41:32.43\00:41:33.66 Jesus comes out of his baptism and immediately goes where? 00:41:33.66\00:41:37.70 --Into the wilderness. 00:41:37.70\00:41:39.10 --Into the wilderness so again let's flush out these parallels 00:41:39.10\00:41:42.50 what's happening there? 00:41:42.50\00:41:44.76 --Well first of all Paul explicitly says in 1 Corinthians 00:41:44.76\00:41:47.93 10, we don't need to turn there, he says basically that they were 00:41:47.93\00:41:51.20 all baptized as they went into the sea, you know, through 00:41:51.20\00:41:55.53 Moses. 00:41:55.53\00:41:56.73 --So he parallels the baptism language with the Red Sea. 00:41:56.73\00:42:00.50 --With the Exodus language 00:42:00.50\00:42:01.80 --And now we have Jesus chronicalogically doing the same 00:42:01.80\00:42:03.66 thing. 00:42:03.66\00:42:04.93 --In, as Matthew in particular is telling the story his word is 00:42:04.93\00:42:08.93 the word that we've seen over and over again. 00:42:08.93\00:42:10.73 In 2:15 this was fulfilled, in 2:17 this happened that it might 00:42:10.73\00:42:15.70 be fulfilled, in 2:23 that it might be fulfilled, in 3:15 that 00:42:15.70\00:42:19.10 it might be fulfilled. 00:42:19.10\00:42:20.33 All the way through, I mean just, I think he uses the word 00:42:20.33\00:42:22.26 some 20 times or more than just fulfilled, fulfilled, fulfilled 00:42:22.26\00:42:25.96 and the interesting thing is, is that the specific things that he 00:42:25.96\00:42:29.00 says are fulfilled are the passages from Israel's 00:42:29.00\00:42:32.66 scripture. 00:42:32.66\00:42:34.16 So he's quoting a verse whether it's in Jeremiah or Isaiah or 00:42:34.16\00:42:36.86 one of the Psalms largely in the prophets and he's saying oh that 00:42:36.86\00:42:40.56 was fulfilled in Jesus, oh that was fulfilled in Jesus. 00:42:40.56\00:42:43.50 But our point here is that these were not just random piece mill 00:42:43.50\00:42:47.23 things that were being pulled. 00:42:47.23\00:42:48.80 But the real thing that was being fulfilled is Jesus 00:42:48.80\00:42:51.53 retracing the trajectory of national Israel. 00:42:51.53\00:42:56.36 And so we've got the into Egypt, out of Egypt, baptism, 00:42:56.36\00:43:01.30 --Red Sea. 00:43:01.30\00:43:02.43 --which is the Red Sea, then the wilderness experience. 00:43:02.43\00:43:03.86 -Yeah and it's specified in Matthew's gospel that Jesus was 00:43:03.86\00:43:08.60 in the wilderness for a specific period of time, 40 days 00:43:08.60\00:43:12.03 paralleling, of course, the fact that Israel was in the 00:43:12.03\00:43:16.40 wilderness of temptation for 40 years. 00:43:16.40\00:43:19.63 --There is one small little niggle that we have to be clear 00:43:19.63\00:43:23.73 about, when the children of Israel came out, 00:43:23.73\00:43:26.16 just think back to that. 00:43:26.16\00:43:27.43 When they came out of the Red Sea they journed to the mountain 00:43:27.43\00:43:29.63 and scripture says that that was a journey of about a month. 00:43:29.63\00:43:33.86 Ok. 00:43:33.86\00:43:35.00 Now the 40 years in the wilderness doesn't come until 00:43:35.00\00:43:37.63 after Mt. Sinai. 00:43:37.63\00:43:38.90 So I think it's important that we recognize, not just for our 00:43:38.90\00:43:41.63 purposes here but just in general that it was not God's 00:43:41.63\00:43:43.70 will even close to his will for the children of Israel to be 00:43:43.70\00:43:47.46 wondering around aimlessly for 40 years. 00:43:47.46\00:43:50.06 The real wilderness journey was from Egypt to the mountain, 00:43:50.06\00:43:55.20 which was about a month. 00:43:55.20\00:43:56.93 So we'll say 40 days. 00:43:56.93\00:43:58.50 So it certainly is a parallel to the 40 years but the real 00:43:58.50\00:44:02.43 journey was from here to here because the next thing that the 00:44:02.43\00:44:05.23 encounter is the mountain where they receive the law and the 00:44:05.23\00:44:07.50 principles of God's covenant with them. 00:44:07.50\00:44:10.70 And that's exactly what Matthew does here, you have the 00:44:10.70\00:44:13.43 wilderness, Matthew chapter 4 the temptation and then where do 00:44:13.43\00:44:17.00 we go? 00:44:17.00\00:44:18.26 Jesus' longest public address in the entire gospel of Matthew and 00:44:18.26\00:44:22.43 all the gospels is, I mean the whole chapter of Matthew 5, 00:44:22.43\00:44:26.16 Matthew 6 and Matthew 7 referred to as the Sermon on the Mount. 00:44:26.16\00:44:30.86 And what Jesus does here is phenomenal because he has this 00:44:30.86\00:44:35.53 refrain that he uses 6 or 7 times and the refrain is you 00:44:35.53\00:44:38.26 have heard, but I say. 00:44:38.26\00:44:41.43 You have heard and what he's quoting. 00:44:41.43\00:44:43.06 --It's the authority again. 00:44:43.06\00:44:44.13 --There's the authority thing. 00:44:44.13\00:44:45.26 Now what he's quoting from is their own text. 00:44:45.26\00:44:47.70 You have heard that it is said that you shall not lust after a 00:44:47.70\00:44:50.50 woman but I say unto you whoever lusts after, you know looks at a 00:44:50.50\00:44:53.46 woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her 00:44:53.46\00:44:55.63 already in his heart. 00:44:55.63\00:44:56.60 What is he doing? 00:44:56.60\00:44:57.86 Here is Jesus on top of the New Testament Sinai handing the law 00:44:57.86\00:45:02.40 down, now here's a crucially important point, not as a new 00:45:02.40\00:45:05.20 thing, not as standing in opposition to the old thing but 00:45:05.20\00:45:08.90 in opposition to the incorrect interpretation of the old thing. 00:45:08.90\00:45:13.90 --He indicates that in chapter 5 verse 17 do not think that I 00:45:13.90\00:45:16.66 have come to destroy the law or the prophets. 00:45:16.66\00:45:21.10 I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 00:45:21.10\00:45:24.43 --There's that word again. 00:45:24.43\00:45:25.70 --There's that word again, Jesus is not destroying the law, he's 00:45:25.70\00:45:28.80 not negating the law. 00:45:28.80\00:45:30.13 He's not abolishing the law. 00:45:30.13\00:45:31.33 Jesus is setting it in its proper perspective and giving it 00:45:31.33\00:45:36.66 all the glory that it really possesses. 00:45:36.66\00:45:41.80 --That's powerful, what do you think of verse 20 because we're 00:45:41.80\00:45:43.80 talking about righteousness by faith. 00:45:43.80\00:45:45.33 And after he makes that statement, shortly after he 00:45:45.33\00:45:48.40 says, he says let me break it down to you in verse 20, what 00:45:48.40\00:45:52.13 I'm trying to say is that, the punchline is unless your 00:45:52.13\00:45:54.96 righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and 00:45:54.96\00:45:58.53 Pharisees you don't have part of the kingdom of heaven. 00:45:58.53\00:46:01.96 --Now can I just add something there Jeffrey? 00:46:01.96\00:46:03.60 And that it that when it says unless your righteousness 00:46:03.60\00:46:06.16 exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, there's 00:46:06.16\00:46:09.66 one of two ways we can look at that. 00:46:09.66\00:46:11.56 Either Jesus is saying they were picky, you need to be 00:46:11.56\00:46:14.10 ultra-picky. 00:46:14.10\00:46:15.36 Either Jesus is saying they were very fastidious about the letter 00:46:15.36\00:46:21.03 of the law but you need to be absolutely perfectionistic or 00:46:21.03\00:46:25.56 Jesus is saying that you need to have a righteousness that is of 00:46:25.56\00:46:29.36 an entirely different quality. 00:46:29.36\00:46:32.26 --That's exactly where I was going because to the listener 00:46:32.26\00:46:34.30 who would have been aware you would've been like, seriously? 00:46:34.30\00:46:41.06 Thank you it was a pleasure to meet you. 00:46:41.06\00:46:42.46 This is not going to work. 00:46:42.46\00:46:43.30 How are we gonna do this? 00:46:43.30\00:46:44.56 Unless he was talking about, as you said, a different kind of 00:46:44.56\00:46:47.03 righteousness. 00:46:47.03\00:46:48.23 --We know that he's talking about a different quality of 00:46:48.23\00:46:49.73 righteousness and not just more of the same because in Matthew 00:46:49.73\00:46:53.30 23, I mean I'm jumping way ahead here, we'll go back of course. 00:46:53.30\00:46:57.43 But in Matthew 23 verse 23 whoa to you scribes and Pharisees 00:46:57.43\00:47:01.80 hypocrites, pretenders. 00:47:01.80\00:47:03.46 There's a surface, there's a pretentious, there's an outward 00:47:03.46\00:47:07.20 compliance with the law, hypocrites for you pay tithe of 00:47:07.20\00:47:10.50 mint and anise and cumin and have neglected the weightier 00:47:10.50\00:47:14.56 matters of the law, justice, mercy and faith. 00:47:14.56\00:47:17.40 --There ya go. 00:47:17.40\00:47:18.16 --And Luke's gospel adds love. 00:47:18.16\00:47:20.30 So Jesus is reaching deep and then he uses the metaphor of the 00:47:20.30\00:47:24.46 inside of a cup and a platter and the outside. 00:47:24.46\00:47:27.60 He used the metaphor of a white washed tomb, that's fuill of 00:47:27.60\00:47:30.93 dead man's bones on the inside but it looks 00:47:30.93\00:47:33.33 good on the outside. 00:47:33.33\00:47:35.66 So he's not talking in Matthew 25, the sermon on the mount, 00:47:35.66\00:47:37.73 he's not saying you need more of what the scribes and Pharisees 00:47:37.73\00:47:41.23 have, just be more picky. 00:47:41.23\00:47:43.63 He's saying no you need righteousness that is from the 00:47:43.63\00:47:47.16 inside out. 00:47:47.16\00:47:48.30 You need a quality of righteousness that is prompted 00:47:48.30\00:47:51.73 by the covenantal love of God. 00:47:51.73\00:47:53.33 --That's why they're like we've never heard anything like this 00:47:53.33\00:47:57.23 before. 00:47:57.23\00:47:57.96 --Who is this guy? 00:47:57.96\00:47:58.83 --What planet did this guy come from? 00:47:58.83\00:48:00.16 --When you go back to Matthew chapter 5 Jesus here, again, is 00:48:00.16\00:48:04.16 coming, not to do away with the law, now notice this here in 00:48:04.16\00:48:08.00 verse 17 not to do away with the law or the prophets. 00:48:08.00\00:48:10.40 He's bringing it all together. 00:48:10.40\00:48:11.63 He's not just talking about Sinai alone because Sinai is the 00:48:11.63\00:48:15.63 principle upon which all that God has given us is based. 00:48:15.63\00:48:20.16 --That's right. 00:48:20.16\00:48:21.43 --But notice verse 18 for verily I say unto you until heaven and 00:48:21.43\00:48:25.23 earth pass one jot or tittle from all of the law and the 00:48:25.23\00:48:29.93 prophets have spoken, all of the Old Testament instruction, all 00:48:29.93\00:48:33.26 of the prophecies that have been given to Israel, not one jot or 00:48:33.26\00:48:36.43 tittle shall in no wise pass from it until all of it be what? 00:48:36.43\00:48:40.76 --Fulfilled. 00:48:40.76\00:48:41.86 --So Jesus is coming now to fulfill the law and the 00:48:41.86\00:48:47.20 prophets. 00:48:47.20\00:48:48.43 He's coming as the covenant keeper, as the one who is going 00:48:48.43\00:48:51.73 to fill up the full meaning of all that God has done and all 00:48:51.73\00:48:54.96 that God has promised and all that God has said. 00:48:54.96\00:48:56.66 --I'm so deeply memorized, I'm so glad that you brought that 00:48:56.66\00:48:59.23 out because too often, especially in our community of 00:48:59.23\00:49:01.66 faith when you hear the word law you instantaneously assume 10 00:49:01.66\00:49:05.83 Commandments but that is not the way that the New Testament 00:49:05.83\00:49:08.96 writers use the word law, almost never. 00:49:08.96\00:49:10.90 When they say law they mean the writings of Moses and the often 00:49:10.90\00:49:14.10 mean the entire Old Testament. 00:49:14.10\00:49:16.40 And here this division of the law and the prophets he's saying 00:49:16.40\00:49:19.36 don't think I'm doing away with the Old Testament, what we would 00:49:19.36\00:49:21.16 call the Old Testament, what they would just call the Hebrew 00:49:21.16\00:49:23.16 Scriptures. 00:49:23.16\00:49:24.36 Don't think I'm doing away with the Hebrew Scriptures I'm 00:49:24.36\00:49:26.03 fulfilling and that's a point where they're like, you're what? 00:49:26.03\00:49:30.30 You think you're the fulfillment, that's 00:49:30.30\00:49:31.80 --But it's down there like 00:49:31.80\00:49:33.20 --This guy talks, he talks a big talk is basically what they're 00:49:33.20\00:49:35.83 saying. 00:49:35.83\00:49:36.56 He speaks with authority. 00:49:36.56\00:49:37.73 --Could we use this language that Israel's history is a 00:49:37.73\00:49:40.00 microcosm of God's plan and purpose for humanity and Jesus 00:49:40.00\00:49:47.30 is the macro reality that fulfills? 00:49:47.30\00:49:50.36 He's the one. 00:49:50.36\00:49:52.00 --And it definitely includes the teaching. 00:49:52.00\00:49:53.50 --I'm sorry I didn't hear that I was busy trying to drink 00:49:53.50\00:49:56.06 Jeffrey's water. 00:49:56.06\00:49:56.76 --Say it again, say it again. 00:49:56.76\00:49:57.76 It was an accident because he 00:49:57.76\00:49:59.00 --the language that I'm using here that I think would be 00:49:59.00\00:50:03.23 helpful just to wrap our minds around it is that Israel's 00:50:03.23\00:50:06.06 history is a microcosm of God's plan for humanity and Jesus is 00:50:06.06\00:50:12.80 the macro reality, he's the macrofullfillment of that 00:50:12.80\00:50:17.40 history on behalf of all of 00:50:17.40\00:50:19.40 --what's the text in Isaiah that says that when Messiah comes, 00:50:19.40\00:50:22.23 when the servant comes he will magnify the law. 00:50:22.23\00:50:25.03 --Isaiah 41? 00:50:25.03\00:50:26.30 --Isn't it 41 yeah here it is 42:21 the Lord is well pleased 00:50:26.30\00:50:32.26 for his righteousness sake. 00:50:32.26\00:50:33.93 He will exalt the law, King James, magnify the law and make 00:50:33.93\00:50:37.46 it honorable. 00:50:37.46\00:50:38.73 So this is not a diminishment of Israel's scriptures and history. 00:50:38.73\00:50:41.63 This is a magnification to include James' earlier point. 00:50:41.63\00:50:46.40 Not just this little isolated, favoritism, hey you're my 00:50:46.40\00:50:48.93 people, this universalization of. 00:50:48.93\00:50:53.10 --But no let's not use this point he's gonna make it 00:50:53.10\00:50:55.50 honorable the law of the transcript of God's character 00:50:55.50\00:50:57.20 it's his, it's who he is. 00:50:57.20\00:50:59.46 Jesus comes to dispel the darkness and to make honorable 00:50:59.46\00:51:03.10 who God is and what he really represents. 00:51:03.10\00:51:05.13 Pharisees haven't done that. 00:51:05.13\00:51:06.43 --James you continue to bring that up and I appreciate that 00:51:06.43\00:51:09.43 you keep us grounded in the fact that there's not only the 00:51:09.43\00:51:12.60 rabbinical first century thing going on here, there is a deeper 00:51:12.60\00:51:15.03 conflict with an enemy. 00:51:15.03\00:51:18.00 --Stretching all the way back to Genesis. 00:51:18.00\00:51:19.63 We're continually, and rightly so, reaching into Israel's 00:51:19.63\00:51:23.26 history and as far back as Abraham. 00:51:23.26\00:51:25.56 And James is saying well the gospels also are reaching all 00:51:25.56\00:51:28.50 the way back to Genesis. 00:51:28.50\00:51:29.66 --Well look at this, look at this in Matthew's account, 00:51:29.66\00:51:32.40 Matthew chapter 1 verse 5 and Solomon begat Boaz of Rahab. 00:51:32.40\00:51:39.46 Ok now when you look at the next line and Boaz begat Obed of 00:51:39.46\00:51:44.03 --what verse are you in? 00:51:44.03\00:51:44.56 --Matthew 1 verse 5 00:51:44.56\00:51:45.23 --Five, ok. 00:51:45.23\00:51:46.03 --And Boaz begat Obed of Ruth. 00:51:46.03\00:51:52.03 Here are people, here are people, at least in the context 00:51:52.03\00:51:56.36 of the genealogy of Christ, here are people who have come out of 00:51:56.36\00:51:59.56 these other nations, Ruth was not in her genetic line, she was 00:51:59.56\00:52:04.13 not an Israelite. 00:52:04.13\00:52:05.36 She wasn't a Jew. 00:52:05.36\00:52:06.40 You see what I'm saying? 00:52:06.40\00:52:07.60 So there's a clear revelation here by Matthew purposely 00:52:07.60\00:52:12.13 including in the genealogy these different gentile believers. 00:52:12.13\00:52:15.70 --And not only gentile believers but shady characters. 00:52:15.70\00:52:18.06 --Shady characters, absolutely. 00:52:18.06\00:52:19.46 --Because to a Jew to see these people as part of the lineage of 00:52:19.46\00:52:21.93 Jesus they would have said what? 00:52:21.93\00:52:23.96 --And get this, get this, so when we include these shady 00:52:23.96\00:52:27.06 characters immediately what does he do? 00:52:27.06\00:52:28.83 He says and by the way if you think the shady characters only 00:52:28.83\00:52:31.06 come from the Gentiles remember David begat Solomon verse 6 with 00:52:31.06\00:52:36.46 her that had been the wife of Uriah. 00:52:36.46\00:52:38.86 In other words God again is being inclusive but he's 00:52:38.86\00:52:42.66 showing. 00:52:42.66\00:52:43.53 --The pedigree is not looking good. 00:52:43.53\00:52:45.33 --He's showing there's no difference. 00:52:45.33\00:52:46.60 --So God is in the company of the outcastal society, guys a 00:52:46.60\00:52:48.50 quick side point. 00:52:48.50\00:52:49.80 Should we, could we say then that Jesus teaching us that the 00:52:49.80\00:52:54.76 Old Testament is beautiful? 00:52:54.76\00:52:56.00 Because if the sermon of the mount, if the sermon on the 00:52:56.00\00:52:59.36 mount is beautiful an elevated code of everything ethic, 00:52:59.36\00:53:03.70 morality, righteousness, 00:53:03.70\00:53:05.46 --social interaction 00:53:05.46\00:53:06.73 --and if that's beautiful and yet all that is is a fulfillment 00:53:06.73\00:53:09.83 of the law and the prophets. 00:53:09.83\00:53:11.13 In other words, Jesus is summing up and giving us the essence of 00:53:11.13\00:53:14.43 the law and the prophets then basically he's telling us this 00:53:14.43\00:53:17.43 is how you read the Old Testament. 00:53:17.43\00:53:19.00 --Exactly, over and against the rabbinical misinterpretation of 00:53:19.00\00:53:21.60 what it was. 00:53:21.60\00:53:22.56 --Which is why it's beautiful 00:53:22.56\00:53:23.56 --He has to take that apologetic posture. 00:53:23.56\00:53:25.06 You have heard but I say, you have heard but I say. 00:53:25.06\00:53:27.00 You could even say, now we don't want to be misunderstood 00:53:27.00\00:53:30.06 on this, you wouldn't need a sermon on the mount if the Old 00:53:30.06\00:53:33.30 Testament had been correctly understood. 00:53:33.30\00:53:36.40 He would say keep up the good work. 00:53:36.40\00:53:37.53 --I want to get back to something here that I think is 00:53:37.53\00:53:40.16 important when you talked about the story of Willie Nelson and 00:53:40.16\00:53:42.16 that is this you don't have to read past verse 6 to recognize 00:53:42.16\00:53:46.20 in the first book of the New Testament that this book was 00:53:46.20\00:53:49.73 written for us. 00:53:49.73\00:53:50.80 Now I'm going to share a little bit about myself. 00:53:50.80\00:53:53.20 I was born to a father who was black, a mother who was white 00:53:53.20\00:53:58.50 who were not married and this is going back to late 50s early 60s 00:53:58.50\00:54:03.30 I was born in '62 and never married. 00:54:03.30\00:54:06.03 And so back then in those days to be 00:54:06.03\00:54:08.70 --There's a stigma attached. 00:54:08.70\00:54:09.96 --Yes, now when I read the first 6 verse of Matthew's account of 00:54:09.96\00:54:16.03 the genealogy of Christ I'm thinking like ok. 00:54:16.03\00:54:16.66 --You're gonna be alright. 00:54:16.66\00:54:18.06 Everything's gonna be alright. 00:54:18.06\00:54:20.16 --I'll be ok. 00:54:20.16\00:54:20.86 --You're in good company. 00:54:20.86\00:54:21.60 --Society today 00:54:21.60\00:54:23.16 --So genealogies preach the gospel. 00:54:23.16\00:54:24.76 --Yes. 00:54:24.76\00:54:25.46 --Amen. 00:54:25.46\00:54:26.73 --In society today you are an outcast, I can't tell you how 00:54:26.73\00:54:29.23 many years and even to this day how difficult it is sometimes to 00:54:29.23\00:54:32.83 say to people well my mom and dad never actually married. 00:54:32.83\00:54:35.86 Well my mom and dad never actually marr, well my mom and 00:54:35.86\00:54:38.06 dad weren't actually married. 00:54:38.06\00:54:39.96 You know what I'm saying? 00:54:39.96\00:54:41.23 But when I read these first 6 verses I'm like oh I'm in good 00:54:41.23\00:54:42.93 company. 00:54:42.93\00:54:43.73 [Laughter] 00:54:43.73\00:54:45.60 Here's Rahab, here's Ruth, here's the one who was born of 00:54:45.60\00:54:50.86 Uriah's former wife. 00:54:50.86\00:54:54.56 I mean 00:54:54.56\00:54:55.43 --The pedigree is not looking good. 00:54:55.43\00:54:57.16 When we come to 00:54:57.16\00:54:58.76 --But it is good. 00:54:58.76\00:55:00.66 --Of course, amen for anyone who is an outcast. 00:55:00.66\00:55:03.23 --For sinner's hallelujah 00:55:03.23\00:55:04.26 --Willie Nelson, whoever else it is good. 00:55:04.26\00:55:06.06 --When and there's so much more that can be said about Jesus and 00:55:06.06\00:55:09.53 the gospels but something that I just feel like I would be remiss 00:55:09.53\00:55:12.36 if we didn't point out is that the very first thing that Jesus 00:55:12.36\00:55:15.50 says, we went through the into Egypt, out of Egypt, through the 00:55:15.50\00:55:19.70 baptism, into the wilderness and then here he is on the New 00:55:19.70\00:55:21.73 Testament Sinai, you know here he is in the sermon on the 00:55:21.73\00:55:25.46 mount. 00:55:25.46\00:55:26.56 What's the first thing that comes out of his mouth? 00:55:26.56\00:55:27.86 It's not this nice, cute little innocuous phrase. 00:55:27.86\00:55:32.06 This is something, Jesus has been thinking about this for, 00:55:32.06\00:55:34.56 who knows, 20 years? 00:55:34.56\00:55:36.53 I mean this is calculated. 00:55:36.53\00:55:38.00 It's intentionally calculated in a single phrase to tectonically 00:55:38.00\00:55:42.90 upend the whole of first century Jewish thinking. 00:55:42.90\00:55:46.63 And we know that because when John the Baptist was baptizing 00:55:46.63\00:55:49.13 people some people came out, some of the religious leaders 00:55:49.13\00:55:52.43 came out and John anticipated their objection to what was 00:55:52.43\00:55:54.96 going on. 00:55:54.96\00:55:55.86 He said I know what you are thinking. 00:55:55.86\00:55:57.13 Don't even begin to say within yourselves that we have Abraham 00:55:57.13\00:56:00.86 as our father. 00:56:00.86\00:56:02.10 See this is, he's tapping into first century Jewish psyche 00:56:02.10\00:56:05.16 here. 00:56:05.16\00:56:06.00 Hey we're alright. 00:56:06.00\00:56:07.26 We're connected because we are the descendants of Abraham all 00:56:07.26\00:56:08.50 is well. 00:56:08.50\00:56:09.76 And Jesus is constantly pushing back against this idea that your 00:56:09.76\00:56:13.03 genealogical attachment to Abraham is the thing. 00:56:13.03\00:56:15.53 So when he stand up there he's speaking not just, as you said 00:56:15.53\00:56:18.60 Ty, into a vacuum. 00:56:18.60\00:56:19.90 He is speaking into a very specific social, theological, 00:56:19.90\00:56:22.80 psychological situation and that situation is if we are the Jews 00:56:22.80\00:56:26.76 we are God's people full stop. 00:56:26.76\00:56:30.56 --We have a monopoly on the truth on God's salvation, on 00:56:30.56\00:56:33.76 blessing. 00:56:33.76\00:56:35.66 --So when Jesus opens his mouth look at what he says, the first 00:56:35.66\00:56:38.50 thing he says blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the 00:56:38.50\00:56:43.90 kingdom of heaven. 00:56:43.90\00:56:45.40 --What? 00:56:45.40\00:56:46.20 --It's revolutionary. 00:56:46.20\00:56:47.23 --What totally rev...that's the best word. 00:56:47.23\00:56:48.93 It literally is revolutionary. 00:56:48.93\00:56:52.10 We think of Jesus turning over the tables in the temple which 00:56:52.10\00:56:53.70 I'm sure we'll get to, this is turning over, he's turning minds 00:56:53.70\00:56:57.33 over because what he is saying is 00:56:57.33\00:56:59.36 [Laughter] 00:56:59.36\00:57:01.03 --Flip. 00:57:01.03\00:57:02.26 --You're not God's people if you know that you are elite and 00:57:02.26\00:57:05.80 elect and special. 00:57:05.80\00:57:07.20 You are members of God's kingdom if you know that you are 00:57:07.20\00:57:09.80 spiritually impoverished. 00:57:09.80\00:57:11.53 --If you think you're elite and special that's evidence that you 00:57:11.53\00:57:13.73 are not. 00:57:13.73\00:57:15.00 --You are not, blessed are those who recognize their spiritual 00:57:15.00\00:57:18.30 poverty. 00:57:18.30\00:57:19.40 I'm gonna tell you about a whole new kind of kingdom. 00:57:19.40\00:57:21.20 And it's a kingdom, and I tell ya there's gonna be a near riot 00:57:21.20\00:57:24.53 when Jesus has the audacity to say, to a Roman Centurion, I've 00:57:24.53\00:57:28.53 not seen so great faith in all of Israel as I see in this Roman 00:57:28.53\00:57:33.03 Centurion. 00:57:33.03\00:57:34.23 What he's saying is that the kingdom is not just for some 00:57:34.23\00:57:37.43 special little enclave of God's favorites. 00:57:37.43\00:57:39.93 The kingdom is for those who recognize their covenant 00:57:39.93\00:57:43.10 unfaithfulness, their spiritual poverty and lethargy. 00:57:43.10\00:57:47.46 --Jesus in the beatitudes with the series of blessings on those 00:57:47.46\00:57:53.66 who are completely unsuspecting that this is what will come out 00:57:53.66\00:57:59.43 of his mouth, Jesus is basically saying everybody you think is 00:57:59.43\00:58:03.46 not blessed is blessed. 00:58:03.46\00:58:06.40 It's a great universion. 00:58:06.40\00:58:09.06 He's turning it inside out and upside down. 00:58:09.06\00:58:12.86 --Right side up. 00:58:12.86\00:58:13.76 --Yeah right side up. 00:58:13.76\00:58:14.93 [Laughter] 00:58:14.93\00:58:16.43 Upside down is right side up. 00:58:16.43\00:58:17.43 It's incredible what he's doing here. 00:58:17.43\00:58:19.36 --Like I said earlier when somebody was quoting something 00:58:19.36\00:58:22.66 and I said it's no wonder they killed him. 00:58:22.66\00:58:24.20 I mean 00:58:24.20\00:58:25.23 --Well they had to. 00:58:25.23\00:58:26.80 --Of course, he was just 00:58:26.80\00:58:28.06 --They shouldn't have but they had to. 00:58:28.06\00:58:29.26 --Right well he was such a threat to both the Pharisees and 00:58:29.26\00:58:33.16 the Sadducees and just the establishment. 00:58:33.16\00:58:34.93 We talk about revolutionary Che Guevara or whoever, like 00:58:34.93\00:58:38.40 modern revolutionaries. 00:58:38.40\00:58:39.26 This guy, who does he think he is? 00:58:39.26\00:58:42.73 And that's gonna come up, who do you think you are? 00:58:42.73\00:58:45.10 And he's gonna give some answers and people will be like 00:58:45.10\00:58:48.30 [whistling] 00:58:48.30\00:58:49.56 --In this sermon on the mount I think what we're realizing is 00:58:49.56\00:58:51.70 that Jesus is redefining righteousness as love and he's 00:58:51.70\00:58:57.20 redefining Israel as inclusive of the entire human race, in 00:58:57.20\00:59:02.83 God's plan in the potential that is in Christ. 00:59:02.83\00:59:06.56 Amen. 00:59:06.56\00:59:07.56
