[Music] 00:00:02.56\00:00:12.60 [Music] 00:00:12.60\00:00:20.86 This has been a great discussion so far in our 00:00:20.86\00:00:23.33 righteousness by faith series. 00:00:23.33\00:00:25.70 We are in part 7 now and we're calling this one righteous man 00:00:25.70\00:00:29.83 which gives a clue, a hint that we are inching toward the New 00:00:29.83\00:00:34.90 Testament. 00:00:34.90\00:00:36.16 But let's just admit it we love the Old Testament scriptures. 00:00:36.16\00:00:38.83 --Amen. 00:00:38.83\00:00:40.10 --And we love the Old Testament scriptures because we are seeing 00:00:40.10\00:00:42.76 that the narrative and the story that is broken down and 00:00:42.76\00:00:48.83 unfolding in these Old Testament scriptures is rich with gospel 00:00:48.83\00:00:53.73 truth and insight. 00:00:53.73\00:00:55.00 --By the way we should mention that if because normally the Old 00:00:55.00\00:00:57.36 Testament is viewed as awe, all that crazy stuff, all the 00:00:57.36\00:01:01.16 complexity, all those weird verses but I think we should 00:01:01.16\00:01:04.53 mention that if we were to view the Old Testament in the context 00:01:04.53\00:01:07.93 of the story then all of that weirdness kind of begins to make 00:01:07.93\00:01:13.50 more sense. 00:01:13.50\00:01:14.03 --seeming weirdness 00:01:14.03\00:01:14.70 --Hey can I ask a question? 00:01:14.70\00:01:15.43 --Thank you. 00:01:15.43\00:01:16.66 -I've asked this question of a lot of people before, if you 00:01:16.66\00:01:18.03 could have either the Old Testament or the New Testament 00:01:18.03\00:01:20.43 memorized in any translation of your choice but just verbatim 00:01:20.43\00:01:24.83 which would you chose? 00:01:24.83\00:01:25.73 --Old for sure. 00:01:25.73\00:01:26.70 --Old 00:01:26.70\00:01:27.66 --Yeah old because the new one is smaller. 00:01:27.66\00:01:29.73 [Laughter] 00:01:29.73\00:01:31.40 No think about it though if you had the Old Testament memorized 00:01:31.40\00:01:34.53 you could then read the New Testament with such a rich 00:01:34.53\00:01:38.36 perspective there would just be trigger, trigger, trigger, 00:01:38.36\00:01:40.36 trigger. 00:01:40.36\00:01:41.63 --It's amazing though, if you ask most people, not maybe us 00:01:41.63\00:01:44.20 who are preachers and you know closet theologians as it were, 00:01:44.20\00:01:47.53 but you asked most people like just people that I am in 00:01:47.53\00:01:51.36 familiarity with, Christians, have them over to the house 75% 00:01:51.36\00:01:54.26 of the people New Testament, New Testament, New Testament. 00:01:54.26\00:01:56.66 You'd say New Testament? 00:01:56.66\00:01:57.80 --I just love the book of Revelation so I'm kind of 00:01:57.80\00:01:58.86 sticking. 00:01:58.86\00:01:59.96 --Well you have that memorized. 00:01:59.96\00:02:01.13 --But he just asked a question so I gave an answer. 00:02:01.13\00:02:04.36 --Ok, alright, I'm taking Old. 00:02:04.36\00:02:05.66 --So we're talking about the Bible as a story, okay. 00:02:05.66\00:02:11.13 And we're seeing here that the Bible isn't just a collection of 00:02:11.13\00:02:14.26 books with verses that you can pull picky little statements out 00:02:14.26\00:02:19.30 of to construct whatever you want to construct. 00:02:19.30\00:02:22.90 --Well it is that but it's not that responsible. 00:02:22.90\00:02:25.50 --Financial principles, principles for successful 00:02:25.50\00:02:28.60 living. 00:02:28.60\00:02:29.56 The Bible is actually an unfolding narrative. 00:02:29.56\00:02:32.26 It's telling a story and we've seen that that story, the ground 00:02:32.26\00:02:36.16 work for that story is laid in the book of Genesis of course, 00:02:36.16\00:02:39.66 and we have this towering figure, Abraham. 00:02:39.66\00:02:43.76 Abraham is the father of the concept the truth the reality of 00:02:43.76\00:02:49.26 righteousness by faith and Israel is the people that 00:02:49.26\00:02:53.10 emerges from Abraham for the purpose of establishing God's 00:02:53.10\00:02:59.93 covenant in the earth for all the nations of the earth. 00:02:59.93\00:03:03.76 And we've been looking at numerous Old Testament 00:03:03.76\00:03:06.20 prophesies that are pointing forward to the fulfillment of 00:03:06.20\00:03:10.20 covenant in Christ the Messiah. 00:03:10.20\00:03:12.70 And now we've come to one that we all hold very very near and 00:03:12.70\00:03:16.73 dear and sacred to our hearts, Daniel chapter 9. 00:03:16.73\00:03:21.03 Daniel chapter 9 is just an incredible Bible prophesy of the 00:03:21.03\00:03:28.13 Messiah. 00:03:28.13\00:03:29.06 And it's greatly misunderstood. 00:03:29.06\00:03:32.46 We don't need to go into the details of this but Daniel 00:03:32.46\00:03:36.30 chapter 9 is not generally viewed as a Messianic prophesy 00:03:36.30\00:03:43.70 but that's really what it is. 00:03:43.70\00:03:46.26 So you have to try hard not to see the Messiah. 00:03:46.26\00:03:49.33 --Exactly. 00:03:49.33\00:03:50.23 --You have to try very hard. 00:03:50.23\00:03:51.16 --I don't know how people do it. 00:03:51.16\00:03:52.26 I don't know how people do it but some manage to. 00:03:52.26\00:03:54.73 For me Daniel chapter 9 is the critical hinge verse, it's the 00:03:54.73\00:04:00.86 full proof verse between the Old Testament and the New. 00:04:00.86\00:04:03.46 I mean there are lots of passages there that you could go 00:04:03.46\00:04:05.56 to but this passage more than any other single passage in the 00:04:05.56\00:04:07.46 Old Testament encapsulates for me this crucial transition from 00:04:07.46\00:04:12.73 the covenant that was not kept, you know, by Abraham's 00:04:12.73\00:04:17.73 descendants broken, broken, broken, broken, not on the part 00:04:17.73\00:04:20.43 of God but on the part of God's covenant people and the fact 00:04:20.43\00:04:24.20 that it will be kept. 00:04:24.20\00:04:26.13 But it will be kept by a faithful Israelite, one 00:04:26.13\00:04:28.26 righteous man who will be the true Israel, the true Adam, the 00:04:28.26\00:04:33.20 true humanity and that's Jesus Christ. 00:04:33.20\00:04:35.76 This is the one for me that all of this sets up this. 00:04:35.76\00:04:40.20 And that's why it's just such a crime, it's such a tragedy when 00:04:40.20\00:04:44.36 Daniel is misunderstood somehow not in its radical 00:04:44.36\00:04:48.83 Christocentric way which is the biblical way. 00:04:48.83\00:04:51.60 You go ahead. 00:04:51.60\00:04:54.06 --Well I love the way that the chapter is introduced because in 00:04:54.06\00:04:56.93 the beginning of this chapter we have this corporate language. 00:04:56.93\00:05:00.56 Daniel uses this word over and over and over again, it's really 00:05:00.56\00:05:04.50 easy to catch. 00:05:04.50\00:05:05.76 He's a captive in Babylon. 00:05:05.76\00:05:07.80 He's there because of the apostasy and unfaithfulness of 00:05:07.80\00:05:10.36 his people. 00:05:10.36\00:05:11.63 He's there because God's purpose was always to reach the Gentiles 00:05:11.63\00:05:16.30 and other nations through his people and God's purposes will 00:05:16.30\00:05:19.63 not fail. 00:05:19.63\00:05:20.83 He will be faithful to that and he'll use whoever will be 00:05:20.83\00:05:22.16 faithful to accomplish that. 00:05:22.16\00:05:24.30 So there's Daniel being faithful and therefore God brings Daniel 00:05:24.30\00:05:27.20 into Babylon, not for the purpose of anything less than 00:05:27.20\00:05:31.73 revealing this God of heaven and earth, this creator to the 00:05:31.73\00:05:34.76 Babylonians so they can be saved which actually ends up being 00:05:34.76\00:05:37.90 these of Nebuchadnezzar. 00:05:37.90\00:05:39.36 --That's a powerful point because we're talking about how 00:05:39.36\00:05:42.30 Israel is in captivity because of their lack of fidelity to 00:05:42.30\00:05:47.86 God's covenant right? 00:05:47.86\00:05:49.10 They're in captivity as the result of their unfaithfulness 00:05:49.10\00:05:53.73 contrasted with God's faithfulness, however, the fact 00:05:53.73\00:05:56.80 that they're in captivity also serves as double purpose, like 00:05:56.80\00:06:00.13 you're saying. 00:06:00.13\00:06:01.33 It brings them, it brings God's covenant exposure to other 00:06:01.33\00:06:06.00 nations. 00:06:06.00\00:06:06.96 --But not in the way that he intended to be. 00:06:06.96\00:06:10.76 --Right but, but like Ty said earlier when we were looking at 00:06:10.76\00:06:12.53 that verse, does the, does our unfaithfulness make God 00:06:12.53\00:06:14.46 unfaithful 00:06:14.46\00:06:15.43 No never. 00:06:15.43\00:06:16.63 He's still going to be faithful to accomplish his purpose. 00:06:16.63\00:06:19.76 --If the New Testament teaches us anything it teaches us that 00:06:19.76\00:06:23.46 God's promises will be fulfilled but not in the way that we 00:06:23.46\00:06:27.86 expect or anticipate. 00:06:27.86\00:06:30.13 And it's the grandest plot twist in all of literature I think. 00:06:30.13\00:06:32.90 By the time we get to God becoming a man and fulfilling 00:06:32.90\00:06:36.33 we're getting there, I mean. 00:06:36.33\00:06:38.33 --I mean earlier even in the book of Daniel in chapter 4 00:06:38.33\00:06:41.20 where we have this pagan king who encounters the God of Israel 00:06:41.20\00:06:45.56 but not in the, not in the ideal way. 00:06:45.56\00:06:49.76 It wouldn't have been at the top of God's list, this is how I 00:06:49.76\00:06:52.06 want to introduce myself to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:06:52.06\00:06:53.86 --Jeffrey you just preached, what a week and a half ago now 00:06:53.86\00:06:57.16 at a large gathering in Florida, GYC. 00:06:57.16\00:07:01.20 There were thousands of people there and one of the passages 00:07:01.20\00:07:03.13 that you preached on was the whole experience of the Queen of 00:07:03.13\00:07:08.40 Sheba coming to Solomon. 00:07:08.40\00:07:09.83 That's God's ideal. 00:07:09.83\00:07:11.16 And maybe you can just unpack that a little bit. 00:07:11.16\00:07:13.60 What was your kind of point? 00:07:13.60\00:07:15.16 --Yeah the idea there is that obviously there's news that's 00:07:15.16\00:07:18.76 traveling to other nations, there are reports, there are 00:07:18.76\00:07:21.43 rumors that these people, this nation Israel has something 00:07:21.43\00:07:26.50 amazing and very special. 00:07:26.50\00:07:28.33 So with the Queen of Sheba, what is it 2nd Kings chapter 10, you 00:07:28.33\00:07:32.40 have these people traveling coming in to encounter this 00:07:32.40\00:07:37.70 Hebrew culture because they've heard rumors that there are some 00:07:37.70\00:07:41.73 amazing things with these people that their God is amazing right. 00:07:41.73\00:07:45.56 So you have that but whenever you don't have that ideal 00:07:45.56\00:07:49.00 situation God allows his people to go into captivity and by 00:07:49.00\00:07:52.63 doing that he brings exposure to his covenant. 00:07:52.63\00:07:57.73 Just because the covenant people are in captivity to another 00:07:57.73\00:08:01.63 pagan nation. 00:08:01.63\00:08:02.83 You have Babylon, you have this --Exactly, Egypt, Greece. 00:08:02.83\00:08:06.20 --Again here, if you're done. 00:08:06.20\00:08:08.96 Ok here's this other theme that we've been following and that is 00:08:08.96\00:08:12.90 this corporateness, this corporateness of humanity. 00:08:12.90\00:08:15.56 So Daniel is obviously a righteous man in the sense that 00:08:15.56\00:08:19.30 we understand it. 00:08:19.30\00:08:20.46 He is faithful to God. 00:08:20.46\00:08:21.40 God is using him. 00:08:21.40\00:08:22.43 --He's a new covenant believer. 00:08:22.43\00:08:23.60 --And even his enemies can't find fault with him. 00:08:23.60\00:08:26.20 Now this is a spotless guy and he, but he uses this terminology 00:08:26.20\00:08:29.60 we, we, we, we, we. 00:08:29.60\00:08:31.43 And he uses it in a very very negative sense. 00:08:31.43\00:08:35.40 He's talking about all of the unfaithfulness of the people of 00:08:35.40\00:08:39.50 Israel to God he includes himself with them. 00:08:39.50\00:08:42.23 Now either Daniel is trying to be very humble. 00:08:42.23\00:08:45.10 He's trying to be very, you know, meek and you know of 00:08:45.10\00:08:52.33 course, yes I recognize that I, or he's actually speaking from 00:08:52.33\00:08:55.43 his heart. 00:08:55.43\00:08:56.73 --Or he truly feels that way. 00:08:56.73\00:08:57.60 --Yeah he knows. 00:08:57.60\00:08:58.86 --I totally agree with that but maybe there's something more and 00:08:58.86\00:09:02.63 this just came to me, I don't know if this is, if you guys 00:09:02.63\00:09:05.30 would resonate with this or not but he's speaking corporate 00:09:05.30\00:09:10.33 language. 00:09:10.33\00:09:11.56 So when he's saying we have sinned he understands something 00:09:11.56\00:09:14.76 that we have talked about in our previous session and that is 00:09:14.76\00:09:19.13 that while Israel is many Israel is one. 00:09:19.13\00:09:22.76 My son, my servant, singular. 00:09:22.76\00:09:25.73 He recognizes the corporate nature of Israel in the singular 00:09:25.73\00:09:31.10 sense and that prepares the way for the one true faithful 00:09:31.10\00:09:35.20 Israelite that is to be prophesied. 00:09:35.20\00:09:38.16 --That is exactly what I was gonna say. 00:09:38.16\00:09:39.83 You said it a lot better than I did. 00:09:39.83\00:09:41.06 And the whole idea here is that the corporate sense is this 00:09:41.06\00:09:45.03 depravity of our human fallen nature that he recognizes no 00:09:45.03\00:09:49.16 matter what his outward behavior is and we see that in Daniel 10, 00:09:49.16\00:09:52.66 no matter what his outward behavior is he recognizes that 00:09:52.66\00:09:55.50 he is depraved that his falleness is much deeper than 00:09:55.50\00:10:01.26 just his outward actions. 00:10:01.26\00:10:02.63 So he can be a man that's blameless, spotless praying 00:10:02.63\00:10:04.83 doing all of these things but he recognizes within himself is 00:10:04.83\00:10:08.70 that same disposition that the whole nation has to go into 00:10:08.70\00:10:12.40 apostasy. 00:10:12.40\00:10:13.66 And what's really powerful, you mentioned this Ty, and I'm just 00:10:13.66\00:10:15.76 going to elaborate on it is that it's that way of thinking that 00:10:15.76\00:10:20.30 allows heaven through Gabriel to communicate to him the corporate 00:10:20.30\00:10:24.76 identity of the Messiah is going to come and identify with 00:10:24.76\00:10:29.46 corporate humanity in its fallen condition and take upon him, us, 00:10:29.46\00:10:35.30 upon him our sins and our iniquities. 00:10:35.30\00:10:37.70 --So there's a sense in which Jesus is not only the one new, 00:10:37.70\00:10:42.66 one faithful Israelite but he's one new man. 00:10:42.66\00:10:46.76 He represents the entire human race as we move into the New 00:10:46.76\00:10:50.73 Testament. 00:10:50.73\00:10:51.83 Yeah can I just fly through chapter 9 because we've 00:10:51.83\00:10:54.63 mentioned chapter 9 but we haven't done anything with it. 00:10:54.63\00:10:56.73 I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna look at some of high points. 00:10:56.73\00:10:59.26 --Someone has to read verse 4 at least. 00:10:59.26\00:11:01.13 --Ok that's where I was gonna begin Jeffery, watch this. 00:11:01.13\00:11:03.16 In verse 4, this is amazing, God is called Oh Lord great and 00:11:03.16\00:11:08.03 awesome God and what is it defines God's greatness and his 00:11:08.03\00:11:11.66 awesomeness who keeps his covenant in mercy. 00:11:11.66\00:11:15.53 Ok then you skip down to verse 7 Oh Lord righteousness belongs to 00:11:15.53\00:11:21.33 you. 00:11:21.33\00:11:22.60 So God keeping His covenant is what defines His righteousness 00:11:22.60\00:11:27.73 which we flushed out before. 00:11:27.73\00:11:29.16 But now watch and then the end of verse 7 God who is righteous 00:11:29.16\00:11:33.50 who keeps covenant is called the one who is, well, excuse me 00:11:33.50\00:11:40.13 verse 7 righteousness belongs to you but unfaithfulness to us. 00:11:40.13\00:11:44.63 So unfaithfulness is held in contrast, our unfaithfulness is 00:11:44.63\00:11:49.00 held in contrast to God's righteousness and covenant 00:11:49.00\00:11:51.40 keeping. 00:11:51.40\00:11:52.60 Then look at verse 8 he says at the end of verse 8 we have 00:11:52.60\00:11:55.60 sinned against you. 00:11:55.60\00:11:57.10 This is very interesting especially in the light of our 00:11:57.10\00:11:59.70 previous discussions and that is that sin is defined here 00:11:59.70\00:12:05.56 specifically as unfaithfulness to covenant. 00:12:05.56\00:12:08.20 Isn't that something? 00:12:08.20\00:12:09.80 And then verse 9 to the Lord our God belongs mercy and 00:12:09.80\00:12:14.96 forgiveness. 00:12:14.96\00:12:16.23 So there's an expectation here that our unfaithfulness will be 00:12:16.23\00:12:19.80 dealt with by mercy and forgiveness. 00:12:19.80\00:12:24.03 So it's just amazing to me that in this context, again, the 00:12:24.03\00:12:29.00 language is covenant language. 00:12:29.00\00:12:30.36 God is defined in terms of faithfulness to the covenant and 00:12:30.36\00:12:33.60 sin is defined in terms of unfaithfulness to covenant. 00:12:33.60\00:12:36.96 --The whole thing here in Daniel 9 is taking place, again, as is 00:12:36.96\00:12:40.60 all of scripture against the backdrop of either an explicit 00:12:40.60\00:12:44.93 or implicit law of court there is a court scene here, there is 00:12:44.93\00:12:50.03 a trial, there's a standard, someone has been faithful to 00:12:50.03\00:12:52.63 that standard, someone has been unfaithful to that standard. 00:12:52.63\00:12:54.93 And in the case of Daniel it's particularly remarkable because 00:12:54.93\00:12:58.00 Daniel is confessing he's not trying to justify himself and 00:12:58.00\00:13:01.83 say no no no we've been true to the standard. 00:13:01.83\00:13:03.46 We should be found justified or blameless in the implicit law of 00:13:03.46\00:13:08.03 court. 00:13:08.03\00:13:08.83 He's saying we're actually guilty. 00:13:08.83\00:13:10.10 And you have been faithful, you have been righteous. 00:13:10.10\00:13:12.73 Now with your permission I think we'll get a better feel for the 00:13:12.73\00:13:16.03 flow of the passage if I just quickly read it through 00:13:16.03\00:13:18.30 beginning in verse 4. 00:13:18.30\00:13:19.56 It really and you did touch on some of the main passages there 00:13:19.56\00:13:23.06 though, the main highlights Ty. 00:13:23.06\00:13:24.53 But it really gives us a feel for the way that Daniel was 00:13:24.53\00:13:27.03 thinking, right. 00:13:27.03\00:13:28.33 Because this is exile, the temple is destroyed. 00:13:28.33\00:13:31.96 I mean we've got to put ourselves, Israel as God 00:13:31.96\00:13:35.06 intended it is nowhere to be seen. 00:13:35.06\00:13:37.40 Jerusalem and the temple as God intended it is nowhere to be 00:13:37.40\00:13:40.46 seen and this is the response and the thinking of a faithful 00:13:40.46\00:13:44.33 Jew, in the light of what has happened. 00:13:44.33\00:13:46.56 Verse 4 Oh Lord great and awesome God, first thing out of 00:13:46.56\00:13:51.36 his mouth, who keeps his covenant and mercy with those 00:13:51.36\00:13:54.13 who love him and with those who keep his commandments. 00:13:54.13\00:13:56.20 So he begins by saying implicit law of court you've been 00:13:56.20\00:13:59.13 faithful, you've been true. 00:13:59.13\00:14:00.40 Now watch the rest of this we have sinned and committed 00:14:00.40\00:14:03.33 iniquity. 00:14:03.33\00:14:04.53 We have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from 00:14:04.53\00:14:06.73 your precepts and your judgments. 00:14:06.73\00:14:08.30 Neither have we heeded your servants the prophets who spoke 00:14:08.30\00:14:10.63 in your name to our kings and princes, to our fathers and all 00:14:10.63\00:14:14.10 the people of the land. 00:14:14.10\00:14:15.50 Oh Lord Righteousness belongs to you, rightness in the implicit 00:14:15.50\00:14:19.50 law of court. 00:14:19.50\00:14:21.36 But to us shame of face as it is at this day to the men of Judah 00:14:21.36\00:14:23.73 to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and 00:14:23.73\00:14:27.93 those afar off and all the countries which you have driven 00:14:27.93\00:14:30.06 them because of the unfaithfulness which they have 00:14:30.06\00:14:32.60 committed against you. 00:14:32.60\00:14:33.96 Oh Lord to us belong shame of face to our kings, our princes 00:14:33.96\00:14:37.43 and our fathers because we have sinned against you. 00:14:37.43\00:14:40.43 To the Lord our God belongs mercy and forgiveness that we 00:14:40.43\00:14:42.96 have rebelled against him. 00:14:42.96\00:14:44.56 We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God to walk in his 00:14:44.56\00:14:47.13 laws which he set before us by his servants the prophets. 00:14:47.13\00:14:49.93 Yes all Israel has transgressed your law. 00:14:49.93\00:14:54.00 So what you see here, I mean clearly, you can read the rest 00:14:54.00\00:14:57.30 of the prayer it's one of the most emotive prayers in all of 00:14:57.30\00:15:00.13 scripture. 00:15:00.13\00:15:01.40 What Daniel is saying, it's one of the longest, Daniel is saying 00:15:01.40\00:15:03.46 here is the standard. 00:15:03.46\00:15:04.60 And the standard is the covenantal agreement that you 00:15:04.60\00:15:06.83 made with Abraham that was then, and I like what you said in an 00:15:06.83\00:15:09.60 early session Ty that was then augmented and nuanced and never 00:15:09.60\00:15:12.83 changed but added onto by later prophetic revelation in Moses 00:15:12.83\00:15:17.93 and even outside of Moses. 00:15:17.93\00:15:19.16 So here you have this thing, the covenant, and what Daniel is 00:15:19.16\00:15:21.93 essentially saying is God there's not been an instance in 00:15:21.93\00:15:25.83 which you have not kept covenant with your people, not one 00:15:25.83\00:15:27.73 instance. 00:15:27.73\00:15:28.73 But we have sinned. 00:15:28.73\00:15:30.43 We have rebelled. 00:15:30.43\00:15:31.36 We have turned away. 00:15:31.36\00:15:31.96 So we're guilty. 00:15:31.96\00:15:34.10 --And in fact he even mentions the oath that was written by the 00:15:34.10\00:15:36.40 Law of Moses in the rest of that first verse. 00:15:36.40\00:15:37.86 --Yes he does, yes he does. 00:15:37.86\00:15:39.16 Read it. 00:15:39.16\00:15:40.43 --It says therefore the curse was poured upon us and the oath 00:15:40.43\00:15:43.10 that is written in the Law of Moses the servant of God because 00:15:43.10\00:15:45.56 we sinned against him. 00:15:45.56\00:15:47.13 And so he's confirmed the words which he spoke against us and 00:15:47.13\00:15:51.73 against our judges and judged us are bringing upon us a great 00:15:51.73\00:15:54.66 evil for unto the whole heaven has not been done which has been 00:15:54.66\00:15:57.30 done upon Jerusalem. 00:15:57.30\00:15:59.00 As it is written in the Law of Moses verse 13, all this evil 00:15:59.00\00:16:03.26 has come upon us and yet we made not our prayer before the Lord 00:16:03.26\00:16:06.83 our God that we might, that we might turn from our iniquities 00:16:06.83\00:16:10.80 and understand by truth. 00:16:10.80\00:16:12.40 -He is, Daniel is quoting directly here. 00:16:12.40\00:16:15.43 The ideas that he's getting are straight out of Deuteronomy 28. 00:16:15.43\00:16:18.33 That the closing passage in the writings of Moses 27, 28, 29, 30 00:16:18.33\00:16:23.76 was essentially this Israel I have made the universe and the 00:16:23.76\00:16:28.80 world to operate on certain principles, principles of love 00:16:28.80\00:16:31.70 of magnimity of grace of forgiveness. 00:16:31.70\00:16:36.06 And if you operate in harmony with those principles as 00:16:36.06\00:16:38.23 communicated in the covenant than this is what will happen. 00:16:38.23\00:16:40.86 If you operate out of harmony with those principles this is 00:16:40.86\00:16:44.73 what will happen. 00:16:44.73\00:16:46.40 So he's basically saying blessing and cursing and Daniel 00:16:46.40\00:16:49.93 here is saying all that stuff that you said that's happening 00:16:49.93\00:16:53.13 right now. 00:16:53.13\00:16:54.36 We know the times in which we're living, the circumstances in 00:16:54.36\00:16:57.23 which we are living and the beauty of Daniel chapter 9 is 00:16:57.23\00:17:00.26 there's lots of passages like this in the Old Testament where 00:17:00.26\00:17:02.90 prophets are saying you know Jeremiah 11 is a great one. 00:17:02.90\00:17:05.20 You had a covenant unfaithful, unfaithful, unfaithful, 00:17:05.20\00:17:08.06 unfaithful but the beauty of Daniel 9 is that when the whole 00:17:08.06\00:17:11.70 thing closes and I don't know how much depth we want to get 00:17:11.70\00:17:13.73 into in terms of the actual prophesy and anticipation of 00:17:13.73\00:17:17.23 Messiah. 00:17:17.23\00:17:18.60 But the thing that Messiah will do is the most remarkable thing 00:17:18.60\00:17:22.86 verse 27, I'll just jump down there, if you guys want to fill 00:17:22.86\00:17:25.20 in the details above that that's great but he says he, Messiah, 00:17:25.20\00:17:30.63 will confirm a covenant with many for one week but in the 00:17:30.63\00:17:34.66 middle of the week he brings an end to sacrifice and offering. 00:17:34.66\00:17:37.20 Daniel 9 opens with Oh great and awesome God who keeps his 00:17:37.20\00:17:41.53 covenant we've broken, broken, broken, broken, broken. 00:17:41.53\00:17:43.46 Daniel 9 but you will keep it. 00:17:43.46\00:17:48.43 He will come and keep covenant. 00:17:48.43\00:17:51.13 --Powerful, powerful 00:17:51.13\00:17:52.36 --I love this I love it in the context of his prayer too 00:17:52.36\00:17:54.40 because when he gets ready to end his prayer than Gabriel 00:17:54.40\00:17:56.90 comes to give him this prophesy. 00:17:56.90\00:17:58.16 As he ends this prayer he says so here's our condition, here's 00:17:58.16\00:18:01.40 how sinful we've been. 00:18:01.40\00:18:02.60 Here's all of our apostasy now could you do this for your 00:18:02.60\00:18:05.96 namesake? 00:18:05.96\00:18:07.13 Yeah could you do this because of who you are? 00:18:07.13\00:18:10.00 Because of your faithfulness? 00:18:10.00\00:18:11.80 You are such and awesome God and I would hate to see your name, 00:18:11.80\00:18:16.03 because remember what you did with Israel I mean with Egypt. 00:18:16.03\00:18:19.26 He talks about that. 00:18:19.26\00:18:20.30 Remember how you brought us out of Egypt? 00:18:20.30\00:18:22.20 And that's the same thing Moses said. 00:18:22.20\00:18:23.93 Moses said don't destroy them because what about your name? 00:18:23.93\00:18:26.80 --This is burning in my bosom because of some sermons that you 00:18:26.80\00:18:29.90 preached. 00:18:29.90\00:18:31.13 Spend a little moment on that I mean you preached this whole 00:18:31.13\00:18:34.13 idea recently, again at GYC on hey what are the Gentiles? 00:18:34.13\00:18:39.70 Walk us through that. 00:18:39.70\00:18:40.96 --Well in the context of this passage that God realizes how 00:18:40.96\00:18:43.90 high the stakes are for the rest of the world to have access to 00:18:43.90\00:18:48.13 his promises. 00:18:48.13\00:18:49.93 And so this idea that you're talking about where God is 00:18:49.93\00:18:52.30 pleading with, Daniel pleading with God that in scripture you 00:18:52.30\00:18:56.13 often find where God will say I'm gonna do such and such, not 00:18:56.13\00:19:00.60 because you deserve it but for the sake of the Gentiles. 00:19:00.60\00:19:04.43 What will they think of my name, name, my character? 00:19:04.43\00:19:08.53 And then you find the flip side of it where often times in 00:19:08.53\00:19:12.30 scripture God's people are pleading with him and they say 00:19:12.30\00:19:15.66 you need to do such and such. 00:19:15.66\00:19:18.56 Not because of us but you have to because if you don't what 00:19:18.56\00:19:21.23 will the Gentiles think? 00:19:21.23\00:19:22.80 What will people think of you? 00:19:22.80\00:19:25.76 So you have this concern, this high sense of awareness in the 00:19:25.76\00:19:30.23 heart of God to be properly understood so that people know 00:19:30.23\00:19:34.76 who he is and what he is like. 00:19:34.76\00:19:37.40 --His reputation is at stake but not because he's egocentric. 00:19:37.40\00:19:41.93 His reputation is at stake because he has an evangelistic 00:19:41.93\00:19:44.86 eye. 00:19:44.86\00:19:46.13 God is still thinking in terms of Genesis chapter 12 I want to 00:19:46.13\00:19:51.26 bless the whole world, all nations. 00:19:51.26\00:19:54.30 I'm pursuing every man, woman and child on planet earth. 00:19:54.30\00:19:57.96 And if you, my people, make me look bad in their eyes then the 00:19:57.96\00:20:03.33 power of the attraction is broken. 00:20:03.33\00:20:05.43 --You've got it. 00:20:05.43\00:20:06.66 --Which is so beautiful because that's Ezekiel 36 the whole 00:20:06.66\00:20:10.56 tenor of Ezekiel 36 is let me read just a couple of verses 00:20:10.56\00:20:14.03 here, therefore says I say unto the house of Israel thus saith 00:20:14.03\00:20:17.16 the Lord verse 22 I do not this for your sake oh house of Israel 00:20:17.16\00:20:22.40 but for my holy namesake which you have profaned among the 00:20:22.40\00:20:25.30 heathen where you went and I will sanctify my great name 00:20:25.30\00:20:28.70 which was profaned among the heathen which you have profaned 00:20:28.70\00:20:31.43 in the midst of them and the heathen shall know that I am the 00:20:31.43\00:20:34.40 Lord says the Lord God when I shall be sanctified in you 00:20:34.40\00:20:39.30 before their eyes. 00:20:39.30\00:20:40.73 And then he talks about the new covenant, sprinkle clean water, 00:20:40.73\00:20:43.10 etc., etc, etc. 00:20:43.10\00:20:44.40 --You can summarize that like this you guys are making me look 00:20:44.40\00:20:47.00 bad. 00:20:47.00\00:20:48.20 And again it's not a concern for his reputation for his own 00:20:48.20\00:20:51.10 conceit sake. 00:20:51.10\00:20:52.70 He's saying I'm the source of life. 00:20:52.70\00:20:56.56 I'm the best thing for you in the whole world and you guys are 00:20:56.56\00:20:59.73 making me look terrible. 00:20:59.73\00:21:01.26 --Guys this is beautiful point in Hosea 00:21:01.26\00:21:03.66 --Can you go in after the break? 00:21:03.66\00:21:04.70 --That's what I'm saying after the break. 00:21:04.70\00:21:06.86 --We have to take a break there's this thing called time 00:21:06.86\00:21:09.20 and it just keeps ticking away. 00:21:09.20\00:21:11.50 So let's just take a break and we'll come right back. 00:21:11.50\00:21:13.36 Don't lose that thought Jeffrey. 00:21:13.36\00:21:16.00 This is the story of Niyima who took a bus to the doctor and 00:21:23.80\00:21:28.90 found a piece of paper with words of hope about Jesus, which 00:21:28.90\00:21:33.90 was left by a church member who unpacked a box that came from a 00:21:33.90\00:21:38.06 truck, which drove in from Durvan, where a ship was docked, 00:21:38.06\00:21:42.43 that sailed from Seattle loaded with containers stacked high 00:21:42.43\00:21:47.46 with millions of tracts. 00:21:47.46\00:21:49.53 Trucked in from the Light Bearers publishing house. 00:21:49.53\00:21:52.73 Where over 600 million pieces of gospel literature have been 00:21:52.73\00:21:57.23 printed in 42 languages. 00:21:57.23\00:21:59.73 Here's the amazing thing Light Bearers distributes this 00:21:59.73\00:22:03.00 literature free of charge all over the world. 00:22:03.00\00:22:07.50 And each peace costs only 5 pennies to print, transport and 00:22:07.50\00:22:11.23 deliver. 00:22:11.23\00:22:13.06 Every day millions of people buy a $5 cup of coffee, $5 a cup, 5 00:22:13.06\00:22:20.63 days a week. 00:22:20.63\00:22:22.06 It adds up fast but at just 5 cents a piece that same $25 can 00:22:22.06\00:22:28.43 also ship 500 pieces of literature and give hope to 00:22:28.43\00:22:32.66 people like Niyima, who shared that paper with a class mate, 00:22:32.66\00:22:38.63 who gave it to her cousin, who shared it with his boss, who 00:22:38.63\00:22:42.83 passed it to her grandmother, who left it on another bus where 00:22:42.83\00:22:48.13 00:23:32.90\00:23:36.53 Jeffrey right before the break you were gonna launch us into, 00:23:38.16\00:23:39.86 what, Hosea? 00:23:39.86\00:23:40.96 A passage in Hosea? 00:23:40.96\00:23:42.16 --Yeah what triggered the thought was we were in Daniel 9, 00:23:42.16\00:23:45.23 he's doing this long beautiful prayer for the first 14 verses. 00:23:45.23\00:23:49.16 And then in verse 15 he says and now Oh Lord who brought your 00:23:49.16\00:23:53.10 people out of the land of Egypt. 00:23:53.10\00:23:54.96 Ok so, real quick here, it brings us back to this point God 00:23:54.96\00:23:59.03 expects us to have confidence in His promises on the basis of His 00:23:59.03\00:24:04.50 track record right? 00:24:04.50\00:24:05.76 So now Daniel brings back Lord in keeping with your reputation. 00:24:05.76\00:24:11.30 --Can I add verses before you go to Hosea? 00:24:11.30\00:24:13.20 --Go for it. 00:24:13.20\00:24:14.43 --Because you were in chapter 9 here's exactly what you just 00:24:14.43\00:24:16.00 said in verse 14 God is righteous in all the works which 00:24:16.00\00:24:22.13 he has done comma though we have not obeyed his voice. 00:24:22.13\00:24:24.93 See that? 00:24:24.93\00:24:25.63 --Yeah. 00:24:25.63\00:24:26.53 --Ok 00:24:26.53\00:24:27.76 --Ok so here's what I'm saying the thing, the seminal event 00:24:27.76\00:24:32.83 that he points to is the bringing out of Egypt, I just 00:24:32.83\00:24:36.33 wanted to bring out this little point here that I think is 00:24:36.33\00:24:38.63 powerful. 00:24:38.63\00:24:39.90 In Hosea 11 next book in verse 1 when Israel was a child I loved 00:24:39.90\00:24:45.50 him. 00:24:45.50\00:24:46.83 --Singular. 00:24:46.83\00:24:48.06 --Yes. 00:24:48.06\00:24:48.90 --And out of Egypt I called my son. 00:24:48.90\00:24:53.00 Ok in reference to this major major event in the history of 00:24:53.00\00:24:58.00 this people right, the exodus from Egypt. 00:24:58.00\00:25:00.53 --That is the defining event in the history of Israel 00:25:00.53\00:25:03.10 --That's it. 00:25:03.10\00:25:04.33 --But the reason I think that's powerful is because when the 00:25:04.33\00:25:07.33 Messiah, because we're basically on the...we're right there. 00:25:07.33\00:25:09.90 When we get into Matthew chapter 2 I get the privilege of 00:25:09.90\00:25:15.63 cracking open the Jesus book. 00:25:15.63\00:25:17.03 So in Matthew chapter 2 obviously the context here is 00:25:17.03\00:25:21.80 Christ is born, here's His childhood. 00:25:21.80\00:25:24.56 They flee back into Egypt to protect the child right, and 00:25:24.56\00:25:29.13 then in verse 14 it says they arose and took the young child 00:25:29.13\00:25:35.73 meaning Jesus and his mother by night and departed for Egypt and 00:25:35.73\00:25:40.03 was there verse 15 until the death of Herod that it might be 00:25:40.03\00:25:43.90 fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet 00:25:43.90\00:25:48.53 saying out of Egypt I called my son. 00:25:48.53\00:25:52.36 Direct verbatim quote from Hosea 11:1 so here's the point that 00:25:52.36\00:25:56.26 I'm trying to make, Daniel 9, Daniel is pleading Lord we have 00:25:56.26\00:25:59.93 failed, we have been unfaithful, our relational fidelity stinks. 00:25:59.93\00:26:04.56 But you have been faithful, you have been faithful. 00:26:04.56\00:26:07.30 So the point of Daniel 9 is the Messiah will come to be faithful 00:26:07.30\00:26:13.53 where God's people were unfaithful. 00:26:13.53\00:26:15.36 --So here's the incredible thing. 00:26:15.36\00:26:17.00 --That's exactly right. 00:26:17.00\00:26:18.26 --Here's the incredible thing in Daniel chapter 9 and the whole 00:26:18.26\00:26:20.60 Old Testament we have this constant refrain God is faithful 00:26:20.60\00:26:23.86 even when Israel was not, God is faithful, Israel no, God is 00:26:23.86\00:26:27.60 faithful, Israel not. 00:26:27.60\00:26:29.26 Jesus, God is faithful now man is faithful and Jesus fulfills 00:26:29.26\00:26:37.63 faithfulness to the covenant from both ends of the spectrum. 00:26:37.63\00:26:39.43 --He's the righteous one. 00:26:39.43\00:26:40.73 --Yes he's faithful, he's faithful as God to man and he's 00:26:40.73\00:26:44.70 faithful as man to God. 00:26:44.70\00:26:47.30 --He's the Lord of righteousness. 00:26:47.30\00:26:48.50 --The circle of beneficent is complete in Christ. 00:26:48.50\00:26:51.33 --Jeremiah 23:6 00:26:51.33\00:26:52.60 --So he is man's guarantee that God will fulfill his promises 00:26:52.60\00:26:55.76 and God's guarantee that man will be made in his image 00:26:55.76\00:26:59.43 and will be able to fulfill to be faithful to God's 00:26:59.43\00:27:02.46 covenant. 00:27:02.46\00:27:04.20 --Exactly, the longing desire of God's heart, and you see this 00:27:04.20\00:27:06.60 refrain over and over again in the Old Testament is I will be 00:27:06.60\00:27:09.20 their God and they will be my people. 00:27:09.20\00:27:11.33 So God's always scanning. 00:27:11.33\00:27:12.70 He's got the radar on looking for the person about whom he can 00:27:12.70\00:27:16.20 say, that's my guy, that's my dude right there. 00:27:16.20\00:27:19.96 We see an instance of this, by the way, with Job, right? 00:27:19.96\00:27:21.73 When Satan comes and says it's my planet, whatever, I've been 00:27:21.73\00:27:25.33 walking to and fro God what does he long to do? 00:27:25.33\00:27:27.70 He wants to point to somebody and say that's my guy. 00:27:27.70\00:27:29.43 --Have you noticed, have you noticed Job. 00:27:29.43\00:27:30.90 --Now to some degree, I mean there have been times I think 00:27:30.90\00:27:33.26 where God could have said that about me. 00:27:33.26\00:27:34.53 So to you, so to you, so to you, so to you. 00:27:34.53\00:27:36.06 So to Job in other instances. 00:27:36.06\00:27:38.40 --For me not last Tuesday. 00:27:38.40\00:27:41.16 [Laughter] 00:27:41.16\00:27:42.16 --Not last Tuesday, what happened last Tuesday? 00:27:42.16\00:27:42.70 --It was a bad day. 00:27:42.70\00:27:43.26 I was a bad boy. 00:27:43.26\00:27:45.10 --Ok [Laughter] 00:27:45.10\00:27:46.23 --It was bad. 00:27:46.23\00:27:47.40 --I was in California, so I don't even know what he's 00:27:47.40\00:27:49.80 talking about. 00:27:49.80\00:27:50.56 I'm nervous. 00:27:50.56\00:27:51.26 -Don't confess, don't confess. 00:27:51.26\00:27:52.46 --But the only one about whom it could always be said under 00:27:52.46\00:27:56.80 every, even the most trying and testing circumstance Jesus said 00:27:56.80\00:28:00.66 I do always those things that place Him. 00:28:00.66\00:28:03.03 He could say, the thing that he said as he was coming up out of 00:28:03.03\00:28:05.23 the waters of baptism, my son in whom I am well pleased. 00:28:05.23\00:28:10.80 This is the one. 00:28:10.80\00:28:11.83 You want to know what I'm like. 00:28:11.83\00:28:13.20 And Jesus would say again, if you've seen me. 00:28:13.20\00:28:15.26 --But here's the thing, when he comes up out of the water in 00:28:15.26\00:28:18.46 baptism, this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased, Paul 00:28:18.46\00:28:23.80 later on takes that beloved son language and applies it 00:28:23.80\00:28:27.13 corporately to the human race. 00:28:27.13\00:28:29.00 So when Jesus goes through the process of fulfilling all 00:28:29.00\00:28:33.60 righteousness being baptized, when he comes up out of the 00:28:33.60\00:28:37.50 water, this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. 00:28:37.50\00:28:42.53 That is a universal corporate benediction that God the father 00:28:42.53\00:28:47.03 is speaking over humanity as a whole in Christ. 00:28:47.03\00:28:50.53 --Wait, wait, wait, wait amazing. 00:28:50.53\00:28:52.13 --Ty, Ty, Ty but what you just said, you know, drawing 00:28:52.13\00:28:56.30 attention to the baptism is even more profound in the context of 00:28:56.30\00:29:00.06 Israel because isn't it true that Jesus very carefully and 00:29:00.06\00:29:05.23 tactfully begins to repeat the history of Israel. 00:29:05.23\00:29:08.30 --I don't know about tactfully but yes, carefully. 00:29:08.30\00:29:11.13 --Very intentionally. 00:29:11.13\00:29:12.30 --To retrace the history of Israel so he 00:29:12.30\00:29:15.86 --Name instances. 00:29:15.86\00:29:17.23 --For instance how long is he in the 00:29:17.23\00:29:19.63 --wilderness for 40 days, wilderness for 40 years 00:29:19.63\00:29:22.76 --and then 00:29:22.76\00:29:24.03 --well first of all before the wilderness what's the baptism of 00:29:24.03\00:29:26.13 Jesus parallel. 00:29:26.13\00:29:27.43 --That's where we're going crossing of the Red Sea. 00:29:27.43\00:29:28.76 --That's right. 00:29:28.76\00:29:30.76 --Before that out of Egypt. 00:29:30.76\00:29:32.70 --And after Jesus gets baptized where does he go? 00:29:32.70\00:29:35.23 --Into the wilderness. 00:29:35.23\00:29:37.80 --Into the wilderness. 00:29:37.80\00:29:38.53 --For how long? 00:29:38.53\00:29:39.43 --For 40 days and 00:29:39.43\00:29:40.36 --How long was Israel in the wilderness? 00:29:40.36\00:29:41.60 --For 40 not, and then check this out when Israel is in the 00:29:41.60\00:29:44.30 wilderness they received the book of Deuteronomy when Christ 00:29:44.30\00:29:47.70 is in his wilderness he comes and he's being tempted by Satan 00:29:47.70\00:29:50.73 and he quotes 3 times it is written, it is written, it is 00:29:50.73\00:29:54.50 written from the book of Deuteronomy. 00:29:54.50\00:29:56.10 --It's just, it's profound 00:29:56.10\00:29:58.06 --What's the next one though. 00:29:58.06\00:29:59.00 --When Messiah is fulfilling 00:29:59.00\00:30:00.43 --yeah what's the next one, what's the next one? 00:30:00.43\00:30:02.60 --He goes on from there and Jesus delivers his first sermon 00:30:02.60\00:30:04.73 where? 00:30:04.73\00:30:05.60 --From a mountain. 00:30:05.60\00:30:06.60 --From a mountain and what is that sermon? 00:30:06.60\00:30:08.86 It is a magnification of the law of God. 00:30:08.86\00:30:12.16 You're at Sinai now. 00:30:12.16\00:30:13.43 Jesus, Israel personified is now at the mountain and the law is 00:30:13.43\00:30:19.03 restated. 00:30:19.03\00:30:20.43 This is remarkable fulfillment. 00:30:20.43\00:30:22.46 --And there's one that we misread at the beginning and 00:30:22.46\00:30:24.90 that is that the circumstances by which ancient Israel, 00:30:24.90\00:30:28.80 national Israel was led into Egypt was because a man named 00:30:28.80\00:30:31.66 Joseph had dreams that anticipated that. 00:30:31.66\00:30:34.20 In the gospel of Matthew he wants to make it very clear that 00:30:34.20\00:30:37.80 Joseph has dreams and the dream says hey take my child into 00:30:37.80\00:30:42.33 Egypt. 00:30:42.33\00:30:43.10 So you have this whole 00:30:43.10\00:30:45.50 --Joseph, the father of Jesus has a dream. 00:30:45.50\00:30:47.60 --Take him into Egypt. 00:30:47.60\00:30:48.90 --So Jesus, we began with the baptism. 00:30:48.90\00:30:53.13 --There's another one by the way. 00:30:53.13\00:30:54.40 --I mean, yeah, we back up from there Jesus came out of Egypt 00:30:54.40\00:30:58.26 then which parallels the exodus. 00:30:58.26\00:31:00.50 -Of course, exactly, at every -What's the one we missed? 00:31:00.50\00:31:03.13 --The reason why we have Christ coming into Bethlehem or at 00:31:03.13\00:31:09.20 least his parents coming in is to decree, a royal decree of a 00:31:09.20\00:31:11.40 heathen king. 00:31:11.40\00:31:12.80 And you see the same thing taking place in relationship to 00:31:12.80\00:31:15.33 going into captivity into Egypt. 00:31:15.33\00:31:17.80 --The Pharaoh. 00:31:17.80\00:31:18.76 -Yeah the Pharaoh. 00:31:18.76\00:31:20.03 The Pharaoh decreeing yes bring all of your house all of them in 00:31:20.03\00:31:22.56 here so every one of these things is paralleling, every one 00:31:22.56\00:31:25.50 of these things is taking us through this, as you said, this 00:31:25.50\00:31:28.40 repeat of the history of Israel. 00:31:28.40\00:31:30.20 --My memory may be wrong on this so correct me if I'm wrong but 00:31:30.20\00:31:33.86 wasn't, didn't Jesus go into Egypt because there was a census 00:31:33.86\00:31:39.80 being taken and wasn't 00:31:39.80\00:31:41.60 --Not into Egypt, no no no, that was into Bethlehem. 00:31:41.60\00:31:44.03 --Into Bethlehem. 00:31:44.03\00:31:45.26 --He went into Egypt because someone was going to harm the 00:31:45.26\00:31:47.06 child. 00:31:47.06\00:31:47.80 --That's right. 00:31:47.80\00:31:48.93 --What about this, I'm stretching, I'm stretching you 00:31:48.93\00:31:51.86 guys now Genesis 12 Abraham the father of, I'm gonna call him 00:31:51.86\00:31:56.46 Israel, he's called out of his father's house. 00:31:56.46\00:32:01.30 And then Christ the Messiah comes from his father's house, 00:32:01.30\00:32:04.93 from the father in heaven. 00:32:04.93\00:32:07.56 --What? 00:32:07.56\00:32:08.30 [Laughter] 00:32:08.30\00:32:11.20 --It's too deep, it's too deep. 00:32:15.33\00:32:18.30 --There is no question that Matthew, let's take it a two 00:32:19.00\00:32:22.36 levels, first of all Jesus is clearly intentionally doing 00:32:22.36\00:32:25.56 this. 00:32:25.56\00:32:26.80 This is not just serendipitously occurring, oh look at that, 00:32:26.80\00:32:29.76 willy nilly, it just happened to match up 40 days, Joseph. 00:32:29.76\00:32:32.96 --Not a coincidence. 00:32:32.96\00:32:34.50 --Jesus is intentionally purposefully doing this for a 00:32:34.50\00:32:38.13 reason and the reason is to send a message, a clear message that 00:32:38.13\00:32:42.93 he is Israel. 00:32:42.93\00:32:45.00 Now that sounds a little strange to us because we think of Israel 00:32:45.00\00:32:47.20 as a nation. 00:32:47.20\00:32:48.56 But let's remind ourselves that the first person ever called 00:32:48.56\00:32:52.16 Israel was a single person. 00:32:52.16\00:32:55.86 --Jacob. 00:32:55.86\00:32:56.70 --Jacob who won a spiritual victory. 00:32:56.70\00:32:58.93 --Yes. 00:32:58.93\00:33:00.20 --Right a single person that won a spiritual victory. 00:33:00.20\00:33:02.76 And then that grows and becomes the nation of Israel. 00:33:02.76\00:33:06.76 And here we have a single person gaining repeated spiritual 00:33:06.76\00:33:10.03 victories and becomes Israel. 00:33:10.03\00:33:12.66 Now this is a language thing, theological and linguistic that 00:33:12.66\00:33:17.26 I'm very insistent about. 00:33:17.26\00:33:19.06 --Jacob had 12 sons and Jesus had 12 disciples. 00:33:19.06\00:33:21.56 --Of course, there's so many, and I don't mean to cut you off 00:33:21.56\00:33:25.93 there but there's something that we have to be precise about. 00:33:25.93\00:33:27.76 Ok I'm cutting you off, no you cut me off. 00:33:27.76\00:33:28.93 [Laughter] 00:33:28.93\00:33:30.73 And that is that we so often talk about how the church 00:33:30.73\00:33:34.03 replaced Israel. 00:33:34.03\00:33:35.60 You hear this it's sometimes called replacement theology, you 00:33:35.60\00:33:38.00 know, Israel didn't get 'er done and so God raised up the church. 00:33:38.00\00:33:40.90 And so this masks the much larger point. 00:33:40.90\00:33:44.46 God did everything he said he would do in Israel. 00:33:44.46\00:33:48.63 --It's important to understand this. 00:33:48.63\00:33:50.00 --In Israel but Israel was not the nation of Israel, they had 00:33:50.00\00:33:53.53 opportunity, the failed, they failed, they failed, they 00:33:53.53\00:33:55.73 failed, they failed, we went to Isaiah and looked at all those, 00:33:55.73\00:33:57.40 my servant will do this, my servant will do this. 00:33:57.40\00:33:58.66 Isaiah writes with hope, with belief, with anticipation. 00:33:58.66\00:34:01.53 But what happens is the greatest plot twist in all of literature 00:34:01.53\00:34:04.63 God himself becomes, not just a man, but a Jew. 00:34:04.63\00:34:09.66 He becomes Israel step-by-step, point-by-point walks through the 00:34:09.66\00:34:12.96 history of national Israel. 00:34:12.96\00:34:14.86 And so it's not that Israel has been replaced. 00:34:14.86\00:34:18.23 It's that Israel has been fulfilled. 00:34:18.23\00:34:21.33 --And let's just make this point crystal clear, so God 00:34:21.33\00:34:22.93 accomplishes everything he promises to Israel in Jesus 00:34:22.93\00:34:27.23 Christ. 00:34:27.23\00:34:28.33 --There's a verse that says that exactly, it's, it's 00:34:28.33\00:34:32.23 2 Corinthians chapter 1. 00:34:32.23\00:34:33.90 --Is that the yes and amen verse? 00:34:33.90\00:34:35.66 --Yes 2 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 20. 00:34:35.66\00:34:38.53 I love this. 00:34:38.53\00:34:39.73 I tell you if this one verse was understood by many of our 00:34:39.73\00:34:42.53 various Christian friends in various places it would, it 00:34:42.53\00:34:48.26 would literally short circuit so much misunderstanding about 00:34:48.26\00:34:51.10 Israel all of this. 00:34:51.10\00:34:52.93 --Where is it? 00:34:52.93\00:34:53.76 --2 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 20. 00:34:53.76\00:34:55.53 For all of the promises of God, let's just pause right there 00:34:55.96\00:35:00.26 --The whole testament. 00:35:00.26\00:35:01.53 --The entire Old Testament every promise that God made. 00:35:01.53\00:35:03.20 --And and more specifically Israel's entire history. 00:35:03.20\00:35:06.50 --Exactly and its history in the Proverbs, in the Psalms, in the 00:35:06.50\00:35:10.50 prophecies, in the poems, everything. 00:35:10.50\00:35:12.33 All of the promises of God in him, that's Jesus, are yes. 00:35:12.33\00:35:19.93 And in Him amen to the glory of God 00:35:20.70\00:35:24.53 --Now notice this David, notice this verse 18 but as God is 00:35:24.53\00:35:30.06 --faithful 00:35:30.06\00:35:32.40 --faithful, true, our word or the word of God toward you is 00:35:32.40\00:35:35.56 not yay and, excuse me, was not yay and nay. 00:35:35.56\00:35:39.53 --Yes and no. 00:35:39.53\00:35:40.76 --For the son of God, Jesus Christ who was preached among 00:35:40.76\00:35:43.66 you but us even by Silvanus and Timotheus and was not yes and no 00:35:43.66\00:35:50.40 but in him was yes. 00:35:50.40\00:35:52.66 That's the context of it. 00:35:52.66\00:35:53.93 God is faithful, the word has been preached, the promises have 00:35:53.93\00:35:57.20 been fulfilled. 00:35:57.20\00:35:58.66 All of it is established in Christ. 00:35:58.66\00:36:00.60 --That's right. 00:36:00.60\00:36:01.46 --No I'm reading these with new glasses. 00:36:01.46\00:36:03.36 This is so clear in the context of all these Old Testament 00:36:03.36\00:36:07.20 verses. 00:36:07.20\00:36:08.46 --The first time I ever read and understood this book I read an 00:36:08.46\00:36:11.20 entire book that was based on this single verse right here 00:36:11.20\00:36:16.40 2 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 21. 00:36:16.40\00:36:17.63 It was called The Israel of God in Prophecy by Dr. Hans Lara 00:36:17.63\00:36:20.03 dell who's passed away now. 00:36:20.03\00:36:21.23 But there's this major misunderstanding in modern 00:36:21.23\00:36:24.33 chrisiandom that says God is going to do this to national 00:36:24.33\00:36:28.23 Israel. 00:36:28.23\00:36:29.10 I'm talking about right now 2014 Israel. 00:36:29.10\00:36:30.96 And the whole thing is misguided. 00:36:30.96\00:36:33.93 It's not the way that Paul or any New Testament writer 00:36:33.93\00:36:36.83 understood what Israel was. 00:36:36.83\00:36:38.90 --It's already done. 00:36:38.90\00:36:39.90 --It's been done, it was done 2000 years ago. 00:36:39.90\00:36:42.06 Everything that God was going to do, every promise that God made 00:36:42.06\00:36:47.03 is yes. 00:36:47.03\00:36:48.03 But where is it yes? 00:36:48.03\00:36:48.96 It's yes in Jesus. 00:36:48.96\00:36:50.53 --And again it seems like this is just one of those statements, 00:36:50.53\00:36:55.40 these verses just kind of stated. 00:36:55.40\00:36:57.26 And then it gets on to, you know what I'm saying. 00:36:57.26\00:36:59.93 --I see what you're saying. 00:36:59.93\00:37:01.03 --It's understood. 00:37:01.03\00:37:01.93 It's just understood. 00:37:01.93\00:37:03.06 --One of the things. 00:37:03.06\00:37:05.06 --I don't know what direction you want to go here Ty. 00:37:05.06\00:37:06.90 --This is what Silvanus is preaching this is what 00:37:06.90\00:37:08.83 Timotheus, this is what every one of us has been preaching, 00:37:08.83\00:37:10.33 this is the word we've been preaching. 00:37:10.33\00:37:12.00 --The one thing I was gonna mention earlier and I just don't 00:37:12.00\00:37:14.70 want to let it trail in the dust because I think it's important 00:37:14.70\00:37:17.36 is back in Daniel chapter 9, we don't have to turn there. 00:37:17.36\00:37:19.66 We started with the opening of the covenant, we ended with 00:37:19.66\00:37:22.86 someone will come and will keep covenant, will love God with all 00:37:22.86\00:37:25.40 his heart, mind and soul and his neighbor as himself. 00:37:25.40\00:37:27.30 And I loved it a little bit later in Daniel chapter 11 verse 00:37:27.30\00:37:31.20 what is it, you know this 21, 22? 00:37:31.20\00:37:32.80 --Yes. 00:37:32.80\00:37:33.83 --He calls him the prince of the covenant. 00:37:33.83\00:37:36.90 For Daniel I mentioned that, let's see how a Jew was thinking 00:37:36.90\00:37:42.13 about covenant, about Jerusalem, about the Deuteronomy blessings 00:37:42.13\00:37:47.23 and cursing's, the anticipation is of someone who will come. 00:37:47.23\00:37:50.33 They are longing for a faithful Israelite. 00:37:50.33\00:37:53.53 Longing for someone to keep covenant with God. 00:37:53.53\00:37:56.73 --Since you brought up Daniel 11 and there's no way we can break 00:37:56.73\00:37:59.96 down Daniel 11 but I will just say this, Jesus is called the 00:37:59.96\00:38:04.16 prince of the covenant in verse 22. 00:38:04.16\00:38:06.63 And just mention this, this is an area of study that we can get 00:38:06.63\00:38:10.66 into sometime and those who are in this conversation with us. 00:38:10.66\00:38:14.70 But check this out, when we talk about eschatology, end time 00:38:14.70\00:38:19.50 events, the way the closure comes to human history. 00:38:19.50\00:38:24.46 The word covenant show up repeatedly in verse 28 you have 00:38:24.46\00:38:28.73 a power that has moved up against the holy covenant. 00:38:28.73\00:38:31.66 And in verse 30 you have this power that has rage against the 00:38:31.66\00:38:36.36 holy covenant. 00:38:36.36\00:38:37.93 And those who over whom this power exerts influence forsake 00:38:37.93\00:38:43.06 the holy covenant. 00:38:43.06\00:38:44.93 In verse 32 they do wickedly against the covenant. 00:38:44.93\00:38:50.00 And then there's by contrast those who know their God do 00:38:50.00\00:38:54.36 great exploits and as they know their God and carry out great 00:38:54.36\00:38:58.46 exploits what they're doing is they're manifesting, they're 00:38:58.46\00:39:02.20 following through with faithfulness to the covenant in 00:39:02.20\00:39:06.53 an end time setting. 00:39:06.53\00:39:07.73 So we don't have time to get into that. 00:39:07.73\00:39:09.66 I'm just pointing out that end time events even, how many times 00:39:09.66\00:39:14.03 have you ever heard end time events, the prophecies of Daniel 00:39:14.03\00:39:17.90 and Revelation spoken of, taught or preached in the context of 00:39:17.90\00:39:22.40 conflict over the covenant? 00:39:22.40\00:39:25.96 It's foreign to our thinking and the reason why is because we're 00:39:25.96\00:39:29.43 not doing theology and we're not doing eschatology in the direct 00:39:29.43\00:39:34.66 lineage of the historical trajectory of the Old Testament. 00:39:34.66\00:39:37.93 We're not reading the story, we're not reading the story, 00:39:37.93\00:39:39.66 we're jumping to the book of Revelation and we're defining. 00:39:39.66\00:39:45.66 --And with our newspaper in one hand and the book of Revelation 00:39:45.66\00:39:47.70 in the other. 00:39:47.70\00:39:48.96 --And we're not even thinking in terms of the covenant history of 00:39:48.96\00:39:52.10 Israel, its fulfillment in Christ and how the whole thing 00:39:52.10\00:39:55.73 is moving toward a complete realization of covenant 00:39:55.73\00:39:59.50 faithfulness in end time events. 00:39:59.50\00:40:01.73 --Can I, there's something that I know we at this table 00:40:01.73\00:40:05.36 understand. 00:40:05.36\00:40:06.56 But I just want to expressly spell out for those that are 00:40:06.56\00:40:08.56 listening in and that is when we talk a lot about, we talk about 00:40:08.56\00:40:11.56 the covenant, the covenant of course, is the whole history, 00:40:11.56\00:40:15.53 the arrangement that God made originally with Abraham and then 00:40:15.53\00:40:17.56 with his descendants and then ultimately, you know, sort of 00:40:17.56\00:40:19.86 epitomized in the nation of Israel. 00:40:19.86\00:40:21.36 We mentioned earlier that the determinative events that sort 00:40:21.36\00:40:25.30 of defines Israel is the exodus. 00:40:25.30\00:40:27.70 That's God calling his people out. 00:40:27.70\00:40:29.66 He brings them to the mountain and he gives them, he enters 00:40:29.66\00:40:31.83 into this covenant with them. 00:40:31.83\00:40:33.33 And He gives them the sanctuary you might remember a couple of 00:40:33.33\00:40:36.46 sessions ago we said oh the sanctuary but then we never went 00:40:36.46\00:40:38.56 back to it. 00:40:38.56\00:40:39.80 And in the sanctuary, without getting into too much detail 00:40:39.80\00:40:42.16 that we can go into as much as we want. 00:40:42.16\00:40:43.96 I just want to make this one point. 00:40:43.96\00:40:45.50 In the sanctuary was this most holy place piece of furniture in 00:40:45.50\00:40:50.66 the Israelite system and that was the Ark of the Covenant, the 00:40:50.66\00:40:54.86 Ark of the Covenant. 00:40:54.86\00:40:56.06 Listen to the language, most holy. 00:40:56.06\00:40:57.40 It was placed in the most holy place. 00:40:57.40\00:41:00.36 And what's inside of that thing? 00:41:00.36\00:41:01.60 The encapsulation, that which epitomizes and distills the 00:41:01.60\00:41:05.53 covenant, that's the Ten Commandments which is to say you 00:41:05.53\00:41:09.40 just go down them 1, 2, 3, 4 the first tablet or you know 5, 6, 00:41:09.40\00:41:12.90 7, 8, 9, 10 the second and that is supreme love for God and 00:41:12.90\00:41:16.83 authentical love for man. 00:41:16.83\00:41:18.63 So this is the standard and by the way you have, this is what I 00:41:18.63\00:41:20.83 like to say, you have the big 1, the big 2 and the big 10. 00:41:20.83\00:41:24.60 The big 1 is love, the big 2 is love for God, love for man and 00:41:24.60\00:41:28.40 the big 10 is the Ten Commandments and then you have 00:41:28.40\00:41:30.23 further, you know, the rest of the law and then you have, 00:41:30.23\00:41:33.03 that's what Jesus did. 00:41:33.03\00:41:36.33 There was never a time in Jesus' entire life where it was not 00:41:36.33\00:41:40.63 true that he was not loving God with all of his heart, mind and 00:41:40.63\00:41:43.13 soul. 00:41:43.13\00:41:44.23 And there's never an opportunity, just go read the 00:41:44.23\00:41:45.50 New Testament. 00:41:45.50\00:41:46.76 Read the gospels where Jesus is dismissive or unkind or cruel to 00:41:46.76\00:41:50.96 another person. 00:41:50.96\00:41:52.60 He kept covenant with God. 00:41:52.60\00:41:57.00 He was the very thing hoped for and longed for anticipated. 00:41:57.00\00:42:00.30 Wow. 00:42:01.46\00:42:02.66 --That's why I love this thing in Daniel 9 which I'd love to 00:42:03.93\00:42:05.20 get back to just share a little thought but I know we're out of 00:42:05.20\00:42:07.20 time on this session. 00:42:07.20\00:42:09.10 --Can we come back to that? 00:42:09.10\00:42:10.90 That's where we'll come back after the break. 00:42:10.90\00:42:12.23 The Light Bearers story is a short award winning video that 00:42:23.26\00:42:26.56 gives an inside look at one of the boldest and most effective 00:42:26.56\00:42:29.86 9? 00:43:13.86\00:43:16.26 --Daniel 9 because this whole new covenant thinking is just 00:43:16.26\00:43:19.20 beautiful and powerful especially when you recognize 00:43:19.20\00:43:21.86 that it is the landscape of the book of Daniel. 00:43:21.86\00:43:25.36 The whole book of Daniel is written in this new covenant 00:43:25.36\00:43:27.30 language so when you come to Daniel 9:24 Gabriel has come and 00:43:27.30\00:43:32.00 answered Daniels prayer. 00:43:32.00\00:43:33.46 He's going to give him more understanding of this prophecy 00:43:33.46\00:43:36.26 of Daniel 8, this 2300 day prophecy and in Daniel 9:24 he 00:43:36.26\00:43:40.56 begins to give him this insight, this understanding. 00:43:40.56\00:43:43.86 And he begins by saying this 70 weeks are determined or cut off 00:43:43.86\00:43:48.10 determined upon by thy people and thy holy seed. 00:43:48.10\00:43:50.66 In other words, your people Daniel, the Jews, the Jewish 00:43:50.66\00:43:53.33 nation, the Hebrews are going to have a time allotted to them. 00:43:53.33\00:43:56.86 It's a prophetic time of 70 weeks and that time is going to 00:43:56.86\00:43:59.83 be allotted and in that time they need to do, now notice 00:43:59.83\00:44:03.93 this, 00:44:03.93\00:44:04.86 --It's quite a list. 00:44:04.86\00:44:06.06 --Finish transgression, make sin, make reconciliation for 00:44:06.06\00:44:09.86 iniquity and I like this because it's transgression, sin, 00:44:09.86\00:44:13.23 iniquity, it's the whole bucket right there everything's there. 00:44:13.23\00:44:15.60 Every aspect of our depravity is there to bring in everlasting 00:44:15.60\00:44:20.03 righteousness to seal up the vision and the prophecy and to 00:44:20.03\00:44:23.13 anoint the most holy. 00:44:23.13\00:44:24.36 There are 7 things they need to accomplish now I like to ask 00:44:24.36\00:44:26.33 people when I preach on this prophecy I like to ask them did 00:44:26.33\00:44:28.20 Israel accomplish these 7 tasks in the allotted time? 00:44:28.20\00:44:34.36 --Yes and no. 00:44:34.36\00:44:35.90 --Ok most of the time people say no. 00:44:35.90\00:44:39.96 And my second question that I ask them in response to that is, 00:44:39.96\00:44:43.93 the second question I ask them is where they supposed to? 00:44:43.93\00:44:48.66 Were the literal Israelites supposed to accomplish those 00:44:48.66\00:44:52.33 tasks? 00:44:52.33\00:44:53.60 And the answer is yes as long as you're allowed to define what 00:44:53.60\00:44:55.03 that means. 00:44:55.03\00:44:55.80 And the answer to that. 00:44:55.80\00:44:57.06 --You guys are no remembering where in the first Table Talk 13 00:44:57.06\00:45:02.30 parts I said hey remember we dealt with, Daniel 9 and we 00:45:02.30\00:45:06.63 struggled with it. 00:45:06.63\00:45:07.73 --I don't remember that I'm still not getting it. 00:45:07.73\00:45:09.33 [Laughter] 00:45:09.33\00:45:10.56 And the answer the obvious answer in the context of the way 00:45:10.56\00:45:12.83 that most people think, not the way that you're thinking, not 00:45:12.83\00:45:15.50 the way that we've established this general direction. 00:45:15.50\00:45:17.40 But the way that most people think the answer is no. 00:45:17.40\00:45:20.53 God never intended that they would be the ones that would 00:45:20.53\00:45:24.70 fulfill this because notice verse 25 know therefore and 00:45:24.70\00:45:28.53 understand. 00:45:28.53\00:45:29.93 There's something that he's about to say in verse 25 that 00:45:29.93\00:45:32.86 you've got to understand in the context of the 70 weeks which is 00:45:32.86\00:45:36.90 490 prophetic days or 490 literal years. 00:45:36.90\00:45:42.26 There's something you need to understand and know in the 00:45:42.26\00:45:45.23 context of these tasks that need to be fulfilled and what is 00:45:45.23\00:45:47.76 that? 00:45:47.76\00:45:49.03 Well this is what it is known therefore and understand that 00:45:49.03\00:45:50.56 from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to 00:45:50.56\00:45:53.46 build Jerusalem until the Messiah the prince shall be how 00:45:53.46\00:45:57.33 long? 00:45:57.33\00:45:58.20 7 weeks and 3 score and 2 weeks. 00:45:58.20\00:46:00.86 --69 weeks. 00:46:00.86\00:46:03.10 --Ok you've got 70nweeks this is what needs to be done, 00:46:03.10\00:46:05.73 pause for a second. 00:46:05.73\00:46:06.60 Think about that. 00:46:06.60\00:46:07.23 Take it all in. 00:46:07.23\00:46:07.93 --I see it and it's powerful. 00:46:07.93\00:46:09.16 --Know and understand that in 69 weeks Messiah's coming. 00:46:09.16\00:46:13.06 --Why did he say 70? 00:46:13.06\00:46:14.13 --Yeah before the 70 weeks is up covenant is kept. 00:46:14.13\00:46:17.13 --Exactly and it's kept by Jesus because you can't keep it. 00:46:17.13\00:46:20.96 You have failed and failed and failed and failed and failed and 00:46:20.96\00:46:23.10 failed and failed. 00:46:23.10\00:46:24.93 --That's right. 00:46:24.93\00:46:25.56 --And this time he will 00:46:25.56\00:46:27.50 --The Messiah will succeed. 00:46:27.50\00:46:30.16 --Do you see that? 00:46:30.16\00:46:30.73 --Yes I see it. 00:46:30.73\00:46:31.66 --So he has to come before the 70 weeks. 00:46:31.66\00:46:32.80 He has to because you've only got 70 weeks. 00:46:32.80\00:46:35.63 --Is this true or not you guys? 00:46:35.63\00:46:37.23 It had to be Jesus which is to say it had to be God in the 00:46:37.23\00:46:42.56 incarnation because one of the 7 tasks that has to be performed 00:46:42.56\00:46:46.36 is to make reconciliation, atonement. 00:46:46.36\00:46:50.23 --By the way, by the way. 00:46:50.23\00:46:53.80 --Human beings can't make atonement for their sins. 00:46:53.80\00:46:56.96 --They can't do any of this, transgression, sins, all of 00:46:56.96\00:46:59.30 these things by the way, are fulfilled in Christ, New 00:46:59.30\00:47:03.50 Testament. 00:47:03.50\00:47:04.43 You can find phrase, verses, everything. 00:47:04.43\00:47:05.90 --The language. 00:47:05.90\00:47:07.26 --The language is all there. 00:47:07.26\00:47:08.83 --James I'm so deeply resonant with this idea that it's before 00:47:08.83\00:47:12.13 the 70 weeks has to be. 00:47:12.13\00:47:13.90 So otherwise we couldn't, Paul couldn't say well we just read 00:47:13.90\00:47:17.36 that he says in 2 Corinthians 1:20 that all the promises of 00:47:17.36\00:47:19.63 God are yes. 00:47:19.63\00:47:20.86 He could say all except for that one Daniel 9 couldn't do it. 00:47:20.86\00:47:25.50 Now here's something that I wanted to bring up there is and 00:47:25.50\00:47:27.46 we're gonna, you know, we got, praise God we have another what 00:47:27.46\00:47:30.66 7 sessions or 6 sessions or whatever it is? 00:47:30.66\00:47:32.56 Because I'm sure we'll get to some of this but I just want to 00:47:32.56\00:47:35.43 say here that this is a key transition. 00:47:35.43\00:47:38.50 Daniel understands it and when we come to the New Testament we 00:47:38.50\00:47:41.83 see Jesus and I don't want to go too deep I'm just gonna go 00:47:41.83\00:47:44.60 surface because I know you want to get into something. 00:47:44.60\00:47:46.46 Jesus in the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to a lesser 00:47:46.46\00:47:50.06 degree John but especially in the synoptic is consistently 00:47:50.06\00:47:53.83 setting himself in a very interesting kind of antagonism 00:47:53.83\00:47:58.40 to the temples, to the temple. 00:47:58.40\00:48:00.50 He's setting himself over and against the temple. 00:48:00.50\00:48:02.66 Because the temple was always the central place where God was 00:48:02.66\00:48:06.03 doing what God was doing on earth, right? 00:48:06.03\00:48:08.43 The Shekinah was in the most holy place. 00:48:08.43\00:48:10.16 This is the place where God's doing what he's doing on earth. 00:48:10.16\00:48:12.46 It's the tabernacle of meeting. 00:48:12.46\00:48:13.66 It's the place and yet when Jesus comes Jesus knows that 00:48:13.66\00:48:16.60 that temple has been so misused, misunderstood and abused that he 00:48:16.60\00:48:19.80 actually goes in and there's huge significance here. 00:48:19.80\00:48:23.60 He cleanses the temple of all the money changers and 00:48:23.60\00:48:25.86 everything that are in there, casts them out. 00:48:25.86\00:48:28.13 You've made my father's house a den of thieves but here's the 00:48:28.13\00:48:30.26 interesting thing, they say who do you think you are? 00:48:30.26\00:48:33.33 Who gives you the authority to do this? 00:48:33.33\00:48:34.83 And then his response is very interesting he says you destroy 00:48:34.83\00:48:37.33 this temple and in 3 days I'll raise it up. 00:48:37.33\00:48:40.20 What? 00:48:40.20\00:48:41.46 They're like it took 46 years to build this how could that be? 00:48:41.46\00:48:42.73 Here's one for instance where Jesus is setting himself in just 00:48:42.73\00:48:47.26 a position and even in contrast to the temple because the temple 00:48:47.26\00:48:51.06 has been the main center of what God is doing on earth and yet he 00:48:51.06\00:48:54.73 knows that's passing away. 00:48:54.73\00:48:56.46 Well how does he know it's passing away? 00:48:56.46\00:48:57.66 Because of this very prophecy. 00:48:57.66\00:48:59.30 Daniel 9 parallels 2 events, the coming of Messiah, the rejection 00:48:59.30\00:49:05.00 of Messiah, the coming and the rejection of the Messiah and the 00:49:05.00\00:49:08.10 destruction of the city. 00:49:08.10\00:49:09.86 So the end of a thing and the beginning of a thing. 00:49:09.86\00:49:12.50 The Messiah rejected, city destroyed, Messiah rejected, 00:49:12.50\00:49:15.36 city destroyed 3 times Messiah rejected, city destroyed and in 00:49:15.36\00:49:19.06 each of these instances Jesus is trying to redirect. 00:49:19.06\00:49:21.56 You could almost feel the desperation in the New Testament 00:49:21.56\00:49:23.86 in the gospels. 00:49:23.86\00:49:25.13 Where he's like hey you see this thing there's not going to be 2 00:49:25.13\00:49:28.43 stones left upon another that won't be throne. 00:49:28.43\00:49:31.43 Get your eyes, I'm telling you this, this is not the thing. 00:49:31.43\00:49:35.36 And we could get into more detail there but just this idea 00:49:35.36\00:49:38.73 that this is the passing of a thing. 00:49:38.73\00:49:41.06 It's the end of an era but it's the beginning of an era. 00:49:41.06\00:49:45.10 And it's not without huge significance that when Jesus 00:49:45.10\00:49:47.20 dies on the cross you know Eli Eli Lama Sabachthani why have 00:49:47.20\00:49:50.90 you forsaken me. 00:49:50.90\00:49:52.16 The veil of the temple, the place, the location where God is 00:49:52.16\00:49:55.70 doing what God is doing on earth is torn. 00:49:55.70\00:49:57.90 God says ok we're done with that. 00:49:57.90\00:49:59.53 That system, that system is over now because the thing has come. 00:49:59.53\00:50:04.23 And this is all rooted in Daniel. 00:50:04.23\00:50:08.00 --Shadow reality. --Shadow reality. 00:50:08.00\00:50:09.13 Shadow meet reality. 00:50:09.13\00:50:10.13 --So basically Jesus was saying I am the temple. 00:50:10.13\00:50:11.73 --That's exactly what he was saying. 00:50:11.73\00:50:12.73 --What was the point of the temple? 00:50:12.73\00:50:13.83 The temple is a place where people can encounter the 00:50:13.83\00:50:15.43 presence of God. 00:50:15.43\00:50:16.50 It's a connecting link between heaven and earth. 00:50:16.50\00:50:18.10 --John 00:50:18.10\00:50:19.40 --And yet that's Jesus. 00:50:19.40\00:50:20.40 He comes for that purpose. 00:50:20.40\00:50:23.23 --I mentioned that you see Jesus setting himself in opposition 00:50:23.23\00:50:26.46 and sort of juxtification to the temple and primarily in Matthew, 00:50:26.46\00:50:29.20 Mark and Luke but John in John 1 does make the point, very 00:50:29.20\00:50:33.33 profoundly, that he came and tabernacled among us. 00:50:33.33\00:50:36.80 It's a very purposeful. 00:50:36.80\00:50:37.96 He pitches his tent with us. 00:50:37.96\00:50:39.80 This was an intentional work. 00:50:39.80\00:50:42.83 --Make that connection there, it's going right back to Exodus. 00:50:42.83\00:50:45.96 --It's going right back to the exodus. 00:50:45.96\00:50:48.03 I mean there is, I just feel like we're children swimming in 00:50:48.03\00:50:51.53 the ocean right now. 00:50:51.53\00:50:52.60 --It's deep. 00:50:52.60\00:50:53.83 I mean look at, just look at this one verse, just this one 00:50:53.83\00:50:55.83 verse. 00:50:55.83\00:50:57.06 In relation to what we just read in Daniel, look at this one 00:50:57.06\00:50:59.43 verse it's in Romans chapter 5 we're just touching on it, 00:50:59.43\00:51:02.93 Romans chapter 5 and Paul is summarizing, because you know 00:51:02.93\00:51:07.30 Romans, I mean he's just digging into the Old Testament, all 00:51:07.30\00:51:09.83 through Romans he's digging into the Old Testament. 00:51:09.83\00:51:11.80 He talks about the story of Abraham and Sarah in Romans 00:51:11.80\00:51:14.00 chapter 4, He gives the big picture of our depravity in 00:51:14.00\00:51:16.60 Romans 1 and 2, talks about the gospel. 00:51:16.60\00:51:18.46 Romans 5 he begins here in verse 6 for when we were yet without 00:51:18.46\00:51:23.00 strength, ok, that is the realization that Daniel is 00:51:23.00\00:51:26.93 bringing forth. 00:51:26.93\00:51:28.30 We have no strength we have no righteousness, in due time. 00:51:28.30\00:51:31.50 Now that is a direct reference to a specific prophetic time, 00:51:31.50\00:51:35.33 due time, in the Greek it actually means in the proper 00:51:35.33\00:51:38.43 time or the set time. 00:51:38.43\00:51:39.86 At the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 00:51:39.86\00:51:42.43 He's referring here I think back to the Daniel time prophesy, for 00:51:42.43\00:51:45.56 scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure 00:51:45.56\00:51:48.26 for a good man some would even dare to die, verse 8 but God 00:51:48.26\00:51:50.76 commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet 00:51:50.76\00:51:52.86 sinners, Christ died for us. 00:51:52.86\00:51:54.13 Now notice this in verse 9 much more then, being now justified 00:51:54.13\00:51:58.90 by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 00:51:58.90\00:52:02.33 For if, when, verse 10, we were enemies, we were reconciled to 00:52:02.33\00:52:07.30 God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we 00:52:07.30\00:52:10.83 shall be saved by his life. 00:52:10.83\00:52:12.10 He shall, it says right here in Daniel chapter 9 he is going to 00:52:12.10\00:52:15.83 make reconciliation for iniquity. 00:52:15.83\00:52:18.43 Paul has got to be quoting directly from the prophecy of 00:52:18.43\00:52:21.53 Daniel and applying it to Jesus. 00:52:21.53\00:52:23.76 --I love that at the right time. 00:52:23.76\00:52:25.40 --Yes in due time. 00:52:25.40\00:52:26.66 It wasn't willy nilly and we see in the gospels Jesus will sneak 00:52:26.66\00:52:30.83 away when a crowd comes, when they try to make him.... 00:52:30.83\00:52:33.56 --the time has not yet come. 00:52:33.56\00:52:34.80 --Yes, the time has not yet come, but then in the garden 00:52:34.80\00:52:37.36 they come with, you know, the swords and the clubs and all of 00:52:37.36\00:52:40.63 that. 00:52:40.63\00:52:41.86 He essentially says man I was teaching in the temple every 00:52:41.86\00:52:44.26 day, let's go. 00:52:44.26\00:52:45.50 And he willingly goes because he knows, he actually says, one 00:52:45.50\00:52:48.96 place he says my time is at hand. 00:52:48.96\00:52:50.80 --By the way, real quick, you mentioned that he's gotta be 00:52:50.80\00:52:53.83 quoting from Daniel, right, then you begin to see that there's, 00:52:53.83\00:52:56.46 there's so many little things that are said that are in direct 00:52:56.46\00:53:00.36 reference to this prophecy. 00:53:00.36\00:53:02.53 For example verse 27 says he will confirm a covenant. 00:53:02.53\00:53:05.43 During that last stage of his earthly life. 00:53:05.43\00:53:09.73 Fast forward Matthew 26 he's with his disciples, they're 00:53:09.73\00:53:14.10 partaking of the bread and the wine, of the juice that 00:53:14.10\00:53:16.86 represents his blood and he says this is the blood of the new 00:53:16.86\00:53:20.10 covenant. 00:53:20.10\00:53:20.93 At the exact same time 00:53:20.93\00:53:23.16 --he knows it he knows it. 00:53:23.16\00:53:24.23 --He knows what it is. 00:53:24.23\00:53:25.86 --By the way that's the only place, if I'm not mistaken that 00:53:25.86\00:53:28.13 the word covenant occurs in all of Matthew, the only place. 00:53:28.13\00:53:30.60 --Is that right? 00:53:30.60\00:53:31.80 --Yep, he knew that his death was the ratification, the 00:53:31.80\00:53:35.20 sealing of the covenant of Daniel 9. 00:53:35.20\00:53:37.00 But there in Daniel 9, we've got to look at this because this 00:53:37.00\00:53:41.06 covering is not only forward to Romans but it's going to loop us 00:53:41.06\00:53:46.10 back to Abraham. 00:53:46.10\00:53:47.33 --verses 26 and 27 Ok so in the 5 minutes we have remaining 00:53:47.33\00:53:52.86 we're back in Daniel chapter 9 and the way that Jesus fulfills 00:53:52.86\00:53:58.43 covenant is by a very specific means. 00:53:58.43\00:54:01.66 Verse 26 and after 62 weeks Messiah shall be cut off but not 00:54:01.66\00:54:08.26 for himself and then the language follows up in verse 27 00:54:08.26\00:54:12.23 he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week thus 00:54:12.23\00:54:16.93 bringing an end to sacrifice. 00:54:16.93\00:54:19.26 Ok that's verses 26 and 27 this language specifically is 00:54:19.26\00:54:23.83 referring back, again, to Abraham. 00:54:23.83\00:54:26.56 Genesis chapter 15 remember we looked at Genesis 15 and God 00:54:26.56\00:54:31.13 specifically entered into covenant with Abraham by having 00:54:31.13\00:54:35.83 Abraham cut into 3 animal sacrifices and then both God in 00:54:35.83\00:54:43.36 the form of a flaming torch and Abraham passed between the 00:54:43.36\00:54:47.26 pieces in order to form covenant with one another. 00:54:47.26\00:54:51.66 This language is so beautiful that Messiah shall be cut off. 00:54:51.66\00:54:56.60 Essentially what it's saying is that Jesus, in order to keep 00:54:56.60\00:55:01.00 covenant, will follow through to experience this cutting off or 00:55:01.00\00:55:07.66 this sundry, this separation when he cries out on the cross 00:55:07.66\00:55:12.50 "My God my God why have you forsaken me?" 00:55:12.50\00:55:15.70 Jesus is experiencing all the dark psychological and emotional 00:55:15.70\00:55:19.73 horror of the separation that comes between God and falling 00:55:19.73\00:55:26.16 human beings apart from salvation. 00:55:26.16\00:55:28.93 This is astounding. 00:55:28.93\00:55:30.40 --So he's taking upon us of thousands of years of covenant 00:55:30.40\00:55:35.13 infidelity and he's taking it upon himself. 00:55:35.13\00:55:37.93 --And he's following through to keep covenant to remain faithful 00:55:37.93\00:55:42.36 but you remember in Genesis 15 the covenant the symbolism, let 00:55:42.36\00:55:46.76 me slow down here, the symbolism of cutting the animals into and 00:55:46.76\00:55:50.76 passing between the pieces was a formal ritualistic oath. 00:55:50.76\00:55:58.33 It was a way of saying may it be done as it's done to these 00:55:58.33\00:56:03.06 animal sacrifices if I don't follow through to keep my word. 00:56:03.06\00:56:07.83 --But he did. 00:56:07.83\00:56:09.00 --Yeah Jesus did. 00:56:09.00\00:56:10.26 He follows through to keep God's word and he makes atonement for 00:56:10.26\00:56:13.80 our unfaithfulness to the covenant on the human end of the 00:56:13.80\00:56:18.03 spectrum. 00:56:18.03\00:56:19.10 We didn't keep covenant so he has to be severed. 00:56:19.10\00:56:21.46 He has to be cut off. 00:56:21.46\00:56:23.60 --That's why since not for himself. 00:56:23.60\00:56:25.56 --Isn't the word there, that's right? 00:56:25.56\00:56:27.56 --Forgive me if I'm wrong about this but isn't the language 00:56:27.56\00:56:29.70 there the exact same language the cutting into pieces? 00:56:29.70\00:56:32.76 --It is. 00:56:32.76\00:56:33.76 --The passing through the pieces that's the idea. 00:56:33.76\00:56:35.46 It's the very same word. 00:56:35.46\00:56:37.63 --Not only that but in the New Testament it talks about people 00:56:37.63\00:56:40.86 who are lost in Matthew 24 for example and it talks about them 00:56:40.86\00:56:44.46 being cut off. 00:56:44.46\00:56:47.23 It talks about it in the context of them being cut off. 00:56:47.23\00:56:48.86 In other words 00:56:48.86\00:56:50.20 --You mean the Old Testament. 00:56:50.20\00:56:50.86 --In the New Testament too. 00:56:50.86\00:56:51.46 --Oh ok got it. 00:56:51.46\00:56:52.73 --In the New Testament it bores that same phrase, that's what 00:56:52.73\00:56:54.43 we're talking about the idea that the New Testament is born 00:56:54.43\00:56:56.50 from the Old Testament. 00:56:56.50\00:56:57.76 Christ tasted what will be the experience, the reality of those 00:56:57.76\00:57:03.06 who reject this covenant experience, what God has 00:57:03.06\00:57:08.36 accomplished for them, Christ tasted that because that cut off 00:57:08.36\00:57:11.56 phrase is used to apply to those who reject. 00:57:11.56\00:57:14.06 --Now David I just want to point out here you mentioned the 00:57:14.06\00:57:17.06 language, the word covenant in Daniel 9:27 he shall confirm the 00:57:17.06\00:57:21.90 covenant, the word covenant is bareth in the Hebrew and the 00:57:21.90\00:57:26.10 word literally means to cut asunder or to cut in pieces. 00:57:26.10\00:57:32.30 And that is exactly the same word that is used in Genesis 15 00:57:32.30\00:57:36.26 verse 18 on that day when this sacrifice was made. 00:57:36.26\00:57:40.13 On that day the Lord made a covenant, bareth. 00:57:40.13\00:57:43.50 It's the same exact word a cutting of the pieces will take 00:57:43.50\00:57:48.50 place. 00:57:48.50\00:57:49.73 There is just this infinite scale of suffering that will be 00:57:49.73\00:57:53.43 endured by God in Christ in order to save the human race. 00:57:53.43\00:57:59.00 --The depth of this, again, I just feel like a child swimming 00:57:59.00\00:58:03.10 in the ocean here. 00:58:03.10\00:58:04.30 To sort of put the picture together, at least for my mind, 00:58:04.30\00:58:07.73 I just want to say that what Jesus has done and has 00:58:07.73\00:58:14.13 accomplished is so remarkable, so intentional, so perfect that 00:58:14.13\00:58:20.70 he just is worthy of our worship. 00:58:20.70\00:58:22.80 We had a moment and it wasn't on camera here it was off camera 00:58:22.80\00:58:26.13 but when the camera's went off we were like. 00:58:26.13\00:58:27.93 We were freaking out, like this is true this is awesome. 00:58:27.93\00:58:31.03 Jesus was a genius, you know we were just like having a worship 00:58:31.03\00:58:33.70 moment right there. 00:58:33.70\00:58:34.96 And we so often, that's right, we so often think oh worship. 00:58:34.96\00:58:37.80 Ok somebody cue the band and we'll worship. 00:58:37.80\00:58:41.06 This is worship man. 00:58:41.06\00:58:42.30 --It is. 00:58:42.30\00:58:43.50 --Understanding, studying, conversing, fellowshipping, this 00:58:43.50\00:58:48.03 is, I love it there in Malachi 3 where it says that a book of 00:58:48.03\00:58:51.76 remembrance was written before the Lord when people thought 00:58:51.76\00:58:54.46 upon His name. 00:58:54.46\00:58:55.63 That's what we're doing right now. 00:58:55.63\00:58:57.36 We are thinking about the goodness of God in Christ, his 00:58:57.36\00:59:00.46 covenant faithfulness. 00:59:00.46\00:59:01.73 And this is an act of worship. 00:59:01.73\00:59:03.86 And it's an experience of worship. 00:59:03.86\00:59:05.36 --We're essentially saying that when we begin to see God for who 00:59:05.36\00:59:09.13 God really is He becomes extremely attractive. 00:59:09.13\00:59:13.33 We're drawn to Him. 00:59:13.33\00:59:15.23 He's beautiful in our eyes because there is beauty in 00:59:15.23\00:59:19.80 covenant faithfulness. 00:59:19.80\00:59:22.66 This is a response that's right. 00:59:22.66\00:59:23.66
