[Music] 00:00:00.26\00:00:10.30 [Music] 00:00:10.30\00:00:21.00 In this conversation, we're going to be talking about the 00:00:21.00\00:00:23.10 humility of God. 00:00:23.10\00:00:24.53 God is great. 00:00:24.53\00:00:25.80 He's massive in power. 00:00:25.80\00:00:28.23 He's omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and yet God is 00:00:28.23\00:00:33.80 humble. 00:00:33.80\00:00:34.80 He's condescending. 00:00:34.80\00:00:36.60 He comes down. 00:00:36.60\00:00:37.83 What we've been discovering from scripture is this incredible 00:00:37.83\00:00:41.76 idea of God's covenant faithfulness, and now we've come 00:00:41.76\00:00:45.53 to the Incarnation and the cross, and we're going to, we're 00:00:45.53\00:00:49.03 going to discover in scripture that - that God coming down in 00:00:49.03\00:00:52.43 humility and becoming a member of the human race, and then 00:00:52.43\00:00:55.70 going to the cross on our behalf is the consummate demonstration 00:00:55.70\00:00:58.36 of His covenant faithfulness. 00:00:58.36\00:01:00.46 - Amen. 00:01:00.46\00:01:01.23 - That's where we need to go. 00:01:01.23\00:01:02.50 - When you say there that God is big, and He's powerful, and He's 00:01:02.50\00:01:04.56 all knowing, and yet He's humble, it reminds me of 00:01:04.56\00:01:07.30 something I've said to people in the past. 00:01:07.30\00:01:09.43 God is the only being in the entire universe that has a 00:01:09.43\00:01:13.76 native right to be proud... 00:01:13.76\00:01:16.50 - And yet he's not. 00:01:16.50\00:01:18.13 - And yet He's not. 00:01:18.13\00:01:19.40 Because everybody else, you know Paul says in the New Testament, 00:01:19.40\00:01:22.30 why, what causes you to differ from someone else, why would you 00:01:22.30\00:01:24.66 be...it's not wise to compare yourselves among yourselves 00:01:24.66\00:01:27.43 because all of us are dependant on something or someone and all 00:01:27.43\00:01:30.73 ultimately dependant on God for everything we have. 00:01:30.73\00:01:33.30 The great things, our mind, our money, our whatever the things 00:01:33.30\00:01:37.46 we think we could be proud about. 00:01:37.46\00:01:38.76 Some people are proud about their skin color. 00:01:38.76\00:01:40.33 I don't understand that, but everything that we have is 00:01:40.33\00:01:43.43 because of something else, and yet we're proud about it. 00:01:43.43\00:01:46.13 But God is the one being in the universe who doesn't get His 00:01:46.13\00:01:49.26 attributes from any other source, so He is the one being 00:01:49.26\00:01:52.66 Who could be natively proud, and yet He is the humblest being in 00:01:52.66\00:01:56.76 the universe. 00:01:56.76\00:01:57.60 - Oh, it's astounding. 00:01:57.60\00:01:58.86 2 Timothy chapter 3 and verse 16 would be a good text to begin 00:01:58.86\00:02:02.90 with. 00:02:02.90\00:02:03.46 - I think that's great. 00:02:03.46\00:02:04.63 - We need to - we need to realize basically two things 00:02:04.63\00:02:08.30 here from this text that I think are just powerful. 00:02:08.30\00:02:11.43 Um, 2 Timothy 3:16 or 1 Timothy 3:16? 00:02:11.43\00:02:15.43 1 Timothy 3:16. 00:02:15.43\00:02:16.66 Alright, 1 Timothy 3:16. 00:02:16.66\00:02:18.40 This is talking about the incarnation, and it says, and 00:02:18.40\00:02:23.76 without controversy, great is the mystery of Godliness. 00:02:23.76\00:02:27.90 God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by 00:02:27.90\00:02:32.50 angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the 00:02:32.50\00:02:36.66 world, received up in glory. 00:02:36.66\00:02:39.23 Astounding. 00:02:39.23\00:02:40.33 - James, you've got the NIV there? 00:02:40.33\00:02:42.06 How is it? 00:02:42.06\00:02:43.33 What is it for the phrase there, "for without controversy," verse 00:02:43.33\00:02:46.13 16? 00:02:46.13\00:02:47.23 - NIV says in 1 Timothy 3:16, beyond all question. 00:02:47.23\00:02:52.03 - Yeah, ok. 00:02:52.03\00:02:53.10 - Beyond all question. 00:02:53.10\00:02:54.10 - That's his point. 00:02:54.10\00:02:55.43 He's basically saying, there's no doubt about it. 00:02:55.43\00:02:56.83 That's how we'd say it in modern vernacular. 00:02:56.83\00:02:58.26 There's no doubt about it. 00:02:58.26\00:02:59.26 - Can't question it. 00:02:59.26\00:03:00.73 Can't argue about it. 00:03:00.73\00:03:02.23 It's a mystery. 00:03:02.23\00:03:03.10 - Great is the mystery of godliness. 00:03:03.10\00:03:04.23 And the first thing, because God in Himself is a mystery. 00:03:04.23\00:03:06.86 We don't understand fully, and we've spent time on that, what 00:03:06.86\00:03:09.76 it means to be God in His nature, but the first thing that 00:03:09.76\00:03:14.03 comes to Paul's mind when he says, without a doubt, great is 00:03:14.03\00:03:17.50 the mystery of godliness, is this phrase here. 00:03:17.50\00:03:19.66 God was manifested in the flesh, and I would go out on a limb and 00:03:19.66\00:03:24.66 hazard, I don't know for sure, but that word there is probably 00:03:24.66\00:03:28.00 carne or some derivative of carne, which is "the flesh," so 00:03:28.00\00:03:33.33 - so that right there is what we mean when we say in-car-nation. 00:03:33.33\00:03:39.06 The incarnation is God in His Godness somehow condescending 00:03:39.06\00:03:44.70 and choosing to become a man. 00:03:44.70\00:03:48.06 - There's a nuance here, great is the mystery of godliness. 00:03:48.06\00:03:52.50 Great is the mystery of what God is like. 00:03:52.50\00:03:58.33 God condescended to become human. 00:03:58.33\00:04:01.23 That's not what we're expecting from God. 00:04:01.23\00:04:03.86 We're not expecting in our general perceptions of what it 00:04:03.86\00:04:08.43 would mean to be God. 00:04:08.43\00:04:09.66 We perceive God as powerful and elevated, and yet here Paul 00:04:09.66\00:04:15.00 seems to be saying, there's something about God that takes 00:04:15.00\00:04:17.96 our breath away. 00:04:17.96\00:04:19.10 There's something about God that is just a great mystery. 00:04:19.10\00:04:22.50 He came down. 00:04:22.50\00:04:23.80 - That's right. 00:04:23.80\00:04:24.43 - God became human. 00:04:24.43\00:04:25.96 - Yeah, in fact, in the NIV it goes on to describe just what 00:04:25.96\00:04:29.10 you're trying to say, Ty. 00:04:29.10\00:04:30.40 It says, beyond all question the mystery from which true 00:04:30.40\00:04:33.86 godliness springs is great. 00:04:33.86\00:04:36.26 - What version is that? 00:04:36.26\00:04:37.73 - NIV. 00:04:37.73\00:04:38.53 - Oh, that's... 00:04:38.53\00:04:39.76 - The mystery from which true godliness springs is great. 00:04:39.76\00:04:42.00 - That was manifested in the flesh. 00:04:42.00\00:04:44.00 God is modeling for us what greatness looks like. 00:04:44.00\00:04:47.80 - Yes. 00:04:47.80\00:04:48.53 - Humility. 00:04:48.53\00:04:49.10 - It's condescension. 00:04:49.10\00:04:50.30 - Greatness is greatness of character, not greatness of 00:04:50.30\00:04:52.50 position. 00:04:52.50\00:04:53.73 - And that's the opposite of what we read about during the 00:04:53.73\00:04:55.30 fall of Lucifer. 00:04:55.30\00:04:56.13 - That's where I was just at. 00:04:56.13\00:04:57.16 You got it. 00:04:57.16\00:04:58.36 - Because the fall of Lucifer is the is the exact opposite. 00:04:58.36\00:05:00.46 - It's the inversion of reality as God created reality to 00:05:00.46\00:05:02.23 operate. 00:05:02.23\00:05:03.36 - I think you dropped Philippians 2, or somebody did, 00:05:03.36\00:05:05.16 and showed the progression of that in Philippians 2 Christ is 00:05:05.16\00:05:09.43 condescending, condescending, condescending, and you - you 00:05:09.43\00:05:11.86 parallel that to the Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14 where, where 00:05:11.86\00:05:16.66 Lucifer is seeking to exalt, exalt, exalt. 00:05:16.66\00:05:20.80 - Just as a reminder, what happened in comparing those two 00:05:20.80\00:05:23.10 scriptures, for those who are sitting in on the discussion 00:05:23.10\00:05:25.70 with us and on the conversation with us, Isaiah 14 is, I will 00:05:25.70\00:05:29.70 exalt myself, going up, up. 00:05:29.70\00:05:32.20 I will ascend. 00:05:32.20\00:05:33.46 I will sit on the mount of the congregation, on the sides of 00:05:33.46\00:05:35.30 the North, on the farthest sides of the North. 00:05:35.30\00:05:37.06 Up, up, up, and then the poem concludes, yet you'll be brought 00:05:37.06\00:05:41.16 down to the sides of the pit. 00:05:41.16\00:05:42.90 - The lowest depths of the pit. 00:05:42.90\00:05:44.90 - And then Philippians 2, by comparison, by contrast, is the 00:05:44.90\00:05:50.36 One who was equal with God condescended, became nothing, 00:05:50.36\00:05:55.50 down, down, down, down, down, therefore He's exalted. 00:05:55.50\00:05:58.06 - He's exalted, and every knee bows down. 00:05:58.06\00:06:00.36 Do you remember the distinction we also made that in - in the 00:06:00.36\00:06:03.63 text it says, he will be like the Most High. 00:06:03.63\00:06:07.16 - Yeah. 00:06:07.16\00:06:08.23 - Which is God, and then we said, wait a second. 00:06:08.23\00:06:09.73 We've been describing how God is love, God is love, God is love. 00:06:09.73\00:06:11.93 Did this self-serving creature, Lucifer, want to be love? 00:06:11.93\00:06:15.80 - No. 00:06:15.80\00:06:17.16 - And then we talked about that, how he wanted... 00:06:17.16\00:06:19.43 - The power of God. 00:06:19.43\00:06:20.80 - The power without God's character, so that's very 00:06:20.80\00:06:23.96 profound there. 00:06:23.96\00:06:25.23 - He wanted the position, and you can be sure, we can be sure, 00:06:25.23\00:06:27.76 that of the things that Satan wanted, one of them was 00:06:27.76\00:06:31.46 certainly not to become a human being. 00:06:31.46\00:06:34.03 To become flesh. 00:06:34.03\00:06:35.93 God here, it says, great is the mystery of godliness, that God 00:06:35.93\00:06:39.60 would condescend, that He would divest, and I think we should 00:06:39.60\00:06:43.16 talk about that word when we get to Philippians 2. 00:06:43.16\00:06:45.03 That He would divest Himself. 00:06:45.03\00:06:47.20 Satan's not into divestment. 00:06:47.20\00:06:49.03 He's into investment. 00:06:49.03\00:06:50.10 I want more. 00:06:50.10\00:06:51.10 I wanna be greater. 00:06:51.10\00:06:52.50 I wanna be grander, where God's like, oh, do I need to go down? 00:06:52.50\00:06:55.26 Do, oh, I need to go lower. 00:06:55.26\00:06:57.43 Oh ok, I'll go. 00:06:57.43\00:06:58.70 - Basically Satan's kingdom and character is me, me, me, me, me, 00:06:58.70\00:07:02.86 me, and God's kingdom and character is you, you, you, you, 00:07:02.86\00:07:07.70 you. 00:07:07.70\00:07:08.40 That's the bottom line. 00:07:08.40\00:07:09.53 - Can I introduce a verse here in Hebrews chapter 2? 00:07:09.53\00:07:12.26 I've always, ever since the first time I read this, it's 00:07:12.26\00:07:16.63 always just amazed me, because in Hebrews 2 it talks about the 00:07:16.63\00:07:21.33 condescension. 00:07:21.33\00:07:22.46 We're talking about the incarnation, carne, God becoming 00:07:22.46\00:07:25.20 flesh, but in Hebrews 2 and verse 9, and Ty I know these are 00:07:25.20\00:07:29.80 favorites of yours as well, it says, but we see Jesus who was 00:07:29.80\00:07:32.66 made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of 00:07:32.66\00:07:36.56 death, crowned with glory and honor that He, by the grace of 00:07:36.56\00:07:40.56 God, might taste death for everyone, and I always picture 00:07:40.56\00:07:43.86 this idea where it says that God condescends lower than the 00:07:43.86\00:07:50.23 angels. 00:07:50.23\00:07:52.00 In other words, there's three, to my knowledge, there's three 00:07:52.00\00:07:54.93 sort of categories of beings, at least in scripture. 00:07:54.93\00:07:58.03 I know there's other worlds and so forth, but there's God, then 00:07:58.03\00:08:00.50 there's the angelic order, and there's humanity. 00:08:00.50\00:08:02.63 Those are the three primary orders in Scripture, and God 00:08:02.63\00:08:06.30 skips through order number 2, and He stoops down to order 00:08:06.30\00:08:09.76 number 1, meaning, that humanity is now more closely linked with 00:08:09.76\00:08:16.63 God than even angels would be because we now share the flesh, 00:08:16.63\00:08:22.93 we share humanity with God in a way, in an intimacy, in a degree 00:08:22.93\00:08:28.30 of intimacy that angels should never be able to comprehend. 00:08:28.30\00:08:31.53 - Yeah, yeah. 00:08:31.53\00:08:32.76 It's astounding. 00:08:32.76\00:08:34.03 The idea here is that humanity has been incorporated into the 00:08:34.03\00:08:37.80 Godhead. 00:08:37.80\00:08:40.16 Not being elevated to divinity in nature, but being elevated by 00:08:40.16\00:08:44.46 the condescension and humanity of Christ to become one with the 00:08:44.46\00:08:48.96 triune Godhead in fellowship, in the closest possible intimacy. 00:08:48.96\00:08:53.63 - How old are the angels? 00:08:53.63\00:08:54.93 Like how long have the angels been around? 00:08:54.93\00:08:56.03 I've always tried to think about that. 00:08:56.03\00:08:58.26 - I think it's been about... 00:08:58.26\00:08:59.30 [laugher] 00:08:59.30\00:09:01.36 - I was like seriously, I was like, really? 00:09:01.36\00:09:03.23 - Well, they predate human beings according to Job 38. 00:09:03.23\00:09:06.30 - We can say they've been around for hundreds of years? 00:09:06.30\00:09:09.06 - What? 00:09:09.06\00:09:10.16 - Hundreds? 00:09:10.16\00:09:10.80 - Thousands? 00:09:10.80\00:09:11.33 - I'm- I'm testing. 00:09:11.33\00:09:12.86 Thousands? 00:09:12.86\00:09:14.13 - Sure. 00:09:14.13\00:09:14.70 Yes. 00:09:14.70\00:09:15.13 - Millions? 00:09:15.13\00:09:15.63 Who knows? 00:09:15.63\00:09:16.06 - Perhaps. 00:09:16.06\00:09:16.73 - Here's my point. 00:09:16.73\00:09:17.33 Here's my point. 00:09:17.33\00:09:18.33 - Good, make it because I'm not following you. 00:09:18.33\00:09:19.56 - I've been around 30 years. 00:09:19.56\00:09:20.63 - Serious? 00:09:20.63\00:09:21.46 - Some of you guys are much older. 00:09:21.46\00:09:22.70 Some of you guys are about a hundred years old, but... 00:09:22.70\00:09:24.33 - You're looking good for 30. 00:09:24.33\00:09:25.60 - I've been around for 30 years, but here's the thing. 00:09:25.60\00:09:27.93 Is it possible that in my 30 years of existence because God 00:09:27.93\00:09:32.73 has become part of this race, I can enjoy and interaction and 00:09:32.73\00:09:36.96 and intimacy with God that even angels that have been around for 00:09:36.96\00:09:41.13 hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions of years would not be 00:09:41.13\00:09:44.93 able to enter into that type of experience. 00:09:44.93\00:09:47.03 30 year compared to millions of years. 00:09:47.03\00:09:49.33 The difference is that Jesus became part of my race. 00:09:49.33\00:09:53.06 - He's your elder brother. 00:09:53.06\00:09:55.03 - He's my elder brother. 00:09:55.03\00:09:56.20 It's actually in Hebrews 2, right, the elder brother? 00:09:56.20\00:09:58.33 - With perfect theological accuracy, we can say that a 00:09:58.33\00:10:00.26 full-fledged member of the human race, right now, this very 00:10:00.26\00:10:03.90 moment, is seated on the throne of the universe at the right 00:10:03.90\00:10:06.76 hand of God. 00:10:06.76\00:10:07.53 - That's right. 00:10:07.53\00:10:08.36 - A human being is there right now. 00:10:08.36\00:10:09.60 - The significance of this I think is really brought out in 00:10:09.60\00:10:12.70 Philippians chapter 2. 00:10:12.70\00:10:14.06 - Awesome. 00:10:14.06\00:10:15.30 - I'm going to read the NIV because I haven't read this, I 00:10:15.30\00:10:17.10 don't know ever, but in a long time, for sure. 00:10:17.10\00:10:19.60 - What, you're still in Hebrews 2? 00:10:19.60\00:10:22.23 - No, Philippians chapter 2. 00:10:22.23\00:10:23.26 - You've never read Philippians 2? 00:10:23.26\00:10:25.20 - I've read it many times, but I don't know if I've ever read it 00:10:25.20\00:10:27.20 in the NIV. 00:10:27.20\00:10:27.80 - Oh, ok. 00:10:27.80\00:10:28.93 - And the NIV is really unique, I think, to me anyway. 00:10:28.93\00:10:31.60 To my understanding. 00:10:31.60\00:10:32.56 It's talking here in verse 5. 00:10:32.56\00:10:35.30 Let's start there. 00:10:35.30\00:10:36.56 It says, in your relationships with one another, have the same 00:10:36.56\00:10:39.00 mindset as Christ Jesus, so this is relational language. 00:10:39.00\00:10:43.06 It's - it's, as we said in 1 Timothy 3:16, God is giving us 00:10:43.06\00:10:48.50 an example of true godliness, what it means to be godly, and 00:10:48.50\00:10:52.36 then it goes on, it says, who, talking about Christ, being in 00:10:52.36\00:10:55.66 very nature God, did not consider equality with God 00:10:55.66\00:10:59.83 something to be used to His own advantage, rather He made 00:10:59.83\00:11:04.46 Himself nothing. 00:11:04.46\00:11:06.60 He made himself nothing. 00:11:06.60\00:11:08.46 You were talking about the 3 spheres. 00:11:08.46\00:11:11.46 There's God, there's angels, there's man, and then there's 00:11:11.46\00:11:15.10 fallen man, which is man still, but fallen man. 00:11:15.10\00:11:17.63 - That's a good point. 00:11:17.63\00:11:18.80 - Yeah. 00:11:18.80\00:11:20.00 - He didn't just come down to Adam's perfect, Edenic... 00:11:20.00\00:11:22.13 - And then, and then of course in the fallen realm we have 00:11:22.13\00:11:25.56 kings and queens and presidents and we have, you know, I travel 00:11:25.56\00:11:30.46 a lot, we have first class and we have business class and we 00:11:30.46\00:11:33.03 have economy. [laughter] 00:11:33.03\00:11:35.13 And then we have the people who get a ticket at the last minute 00:11:35.13\00:11:37.26 and they're... 00:11:37.26\00:11:38.03 - In coach. 00:11:38.03\00:11:39.13 That's me. 00:11:39.13\00:11:39.70 By the bathroom. 00:11:39.70\00:11:40.20 - By the bathroom. 00:11:40.20\00:11:40.96 [laughter] 00:11:40.96\00:11:42.16 And it says here, He made himself, because when I think 00:11:42.16\00:11:45.53 about Jesus, I think about the fact that He was born in... 00:11:45.53\00:11:48.13 - A manger. 00:11:48.13\00:11:50.26 - A manger. 00:11:50.26\00:11:50.90 - A cattle feeding trough. 00:11:50.90\00:11:52.93 - He made himself nothing. 00:11:52.93\00:11:54.16 He went to the very lowest of the low, and just, to me, I 00:11:54.16\00:11:57.46 can't, I guess I can't relate to that because I want business 00:11:57.46\00:12:00.10 class. 00:12:00.10\00:12:00.70 I want upgrades. 00:12:00.70\00:12:01.36 I want something. 00:12:01.36\00:12:02.66 I want premiere status. 00:12:02.66\00:12:04.06 I want to go in the short line. 00:12:04.06\00:12:05.33 - You have premiere status, don't you? 00:12:05.33\00:12:06.73 On United, anyway. 00:12:06.73\00:12:07.80 [laughter] 00:12:07.80\00:12:08.83 Can I build something into this? 00:12:08.83\00:12:10.90 - Are you done with Philippians 2. 00:12:10.90\00:12:12.40 - No, I mean, I'm done with it, but I just wanted to say that 00:12:12.40\00:12:14.56 was the point. 00:12:14.56\00:12:15.50 That was the point I brought us there for. 00:12:15.50\00:12:16.63 - Because there was something even back in Hebrews. 00:12:16.63\00:12:18.46 - Yeah, that's where I wanted to go. 00:12:18.46\00:12:19.73 I wanna go to Hebrews and Philippians 2 but we - we rushed 00:12:19.73\00:12:22.63 away from Hebrews before we were done there, so go for it. 00:12:22.63\00:12:25.66 - Well, just in Hebrews 2:9, I just wanted to bring this out, 00:12:25.66\00:12:27.96 and I love where you went there, James, by the way, because 00:12:27.96\00:12:31.43 that's a reminder that I need. 00:12:31.43\00:12:32.73 I'm like you. 00:12:32.73\00:12:33.46 I want the upgrade. 00:12:33.46\00:12:34.16 I want the adoration. 00:12:34.16\00:12:36.13 I want the attention. 00:12:36.13\00:12:37.36 I wanna be, I, I, I....and without this model of who, what 00:12:37.36\00:12:43.23 real, um, the word is escaping me, what real beauty looks like, 00:12:43.23\00:12:49.60 is not when you're at the top, but when you're at the bottom 00:12:49.60\00:12:54.26 serving. 00:12:54.26\00:12:55.16 So I need that. 00:12:55.16\00:12:56.30 So, so in Hebrews 2:9, I just love the word "that." 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.26 Um, to me the whole verse hinges on the word... 00:12:59.26\00:13:03.13 - That's exactly what I was going to emphasize, so love it. 00:13:03.13\00:13:05.70 I'm glad we're there. 00:13:05.70\00:13:06.53 - Well, then I'm going to defer. 00:13:06.53\00:13:07.20 Let me defer to you. 00:13:07.20\00:13:08.13 - No, I don't want you to defer. 00:13:08.13\00:13:09.00 - I want to defer. 00:13:09.00\00:13:09.86 - I don't want you to defer. 00:13:09.86\00:13:10.60 - Ok, then I won't defer. 00:13:10.60\00:13:11.33 - I'm just resonating. 00:13:11.33\00:13:12.06 - I'll do it if you guys.... 00:13:12.06\00:13:13.33 - Hebrews 2:9, but we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than 00:13:13.33\00:13:16.36 the angels. 00:13:16.36\00:13:17.23 Jeffery unpacked that. 00:13:17.23\00:13:18.46 Now, for the suffering of death, crowned for glory and honor 00:13:18.46\00:13:22.13 "that" He by the grace of God might taste death for everyone. 00:13:22.13\00:13:26.86 - For the purpose of. 00:13:26.86\00:13:27.63 - For the purpose of. 00:13:27.63\00:13:28.53 - That's right. 00:13:28.53\00:13:29.50 - God cannot die in His Godness. 00:13:29.50\00:13:31.46 In fact, it says, for example in John 1 verse 4, in Him was life. 00:13:31.46\00:13:37.10 I mean, the very principle, we talked about in the beginning 00:13:37.10\00:13:41.36 how God is creative. 00:13:41.36\00:13:42.20 God is relational. 00:13:42.20\00:13:43.46 God creates, so God as God is not gonna suffer a heart attack. 00:13:43.46\00:13:46.86 He's not gonna have a stroke. 00:13:46.86\00:13:48.83 God is not going to die of old age. 00:13:48.83\00:13:50.73 He was. 00:13:50.73\00:13:51.86 He is, and He ever will be, so how is God ever going to 00:13:51.86\00:13:54.66 experience entropy? 00:13:54.66\00:13:56.90 How is He going to experience aging? 00:13:56.90\00:13:58.30 How's He going to experience thirst and hunger and temptation 00:13:58.30\00:14:01.26 and suffering and ultimately death? 00:14:01.26\00:14:02.90 But now, this is where James is going, not just to first class 00:14:02.90\00:14:05.66 death. 00:14:05.66\00:14:06.86 Not even a business class death, but the coach death. 00:14:06.86\00:14:10.20 The death of the cross. 00:14:10.20\00:14:11.46 He has to become a man because God as God is not subject to 00:14:11.46\00:14:16.26 death. 00:14:16.26\00:14:17.23 He becomes a man "that" He can taste death. 00:14:17.23\00:14:21.53 - So - so we could say this way I think, that the incarnation 00:14:21.53\00:14:26.63 was the necessary bridge that God traversed to get to the 00:14:26.63\00:14:30.86 cross. 00:14:30.86\00:14:32.36 He submitted Himself by virtue of the incarnation to a set of 00:14:32.36\00:14:36.96 parameters and limitations that would render His sacrifice on 00:14:36.96\00:14:41.80 the cross real, genuine, and authentic. 00:14:41.80\00:14:44.53 - As a real human. 00:14:44.53\00:14:46.83 Yeah. 00:14:46.83\00:14:47.73 - That's right. 00:14:47.73\00:14:48.70 So, so , so that's the bridge. 00:14:48.70\00:14:50.16 In Paul's theology, in biblical theology, the idea is that the 00:14:50.16\00:14:55.00 incarnation and the death of Jesus on the cross are vitally 00:14:55.00\00:14:58.03 linked. 00:14:58.03\00:14:59.10 - Of course. 00:14:59.10\00:14:59.86 - One occurs in order that... 00:14:59.86\00:15:01.83 - That the other might occur. 00:15:01.83\00:15:03.40 - Yeah, that the other might occur. 00:15:03.40\00:15:06.26 It's an amazing bridge of understanding. 00:15:06.26\00:15:08.50 So, having made that point in Hebrews chapter 2, go back to 00:15:08.50\00:15:14.46 Philippians, and see what you guys think of this, where, and I 00:15:14.46\00:15:18.00 really appreciate the fact that James read from the NIV there. 00:15:18.00\00:15:22.40 The NIV misses the mark, as all translations do on some points 00:15:22.40\00:15:28.10 and then nails it on others, in the New King James version, it 00:15:28.10\00:15:32.10 says, the one who being, verse 6, being in the form of God did 00:15:32.10\00:15:36.56 not consider it robbery to be equal with God but made Himself 00:15:36.56\00:15:39.56 of no reputation. 00:15:39.56\00:15:40.83 That's pretty hard language to wrap your mind around, but the 00:15:40.83\00:15:43.56 word that is here translated "no reputation" in the NIV is 00:15:43.56\00:15:47.43 translated "nothing," and it's a Greek word, keno, and it means, 00:15:47.43\00:15:55.20 "to empty." 00:15:55.20\00:15:56.80 So that's a great translation. 00:15:56.80\00:15:58.53 It means to - to empty the content of something. 00:15:58.53\00:16:03.30 This is amazing because the - the content that makes God the - 00:16:03.30\00:16:10.83 the being that He is falls into 2 basic categories. 00:16:10.83\00:16:15.23 There is the character of God that makes God who God is, and 00:16:15.23\00:16:21.93 the nature of God that makes God who God is, and then there are 00:16:21.93\00:16:24.90 abilities and powers that - that go along with that status as 00:16:24.90\00:16:29.56 God. 00:16:29.56\00:16:30.80 The Phillips translation does something fascinating here. 00:16:30.80\00:16:34.00 It renders... 00:16:34.00\00:16:35.06 - I love that translation, by the way. 00:16:35.06\00:16:37.86 - Yeah, it renders the idea of keno, or kenosis, no reputation 00:16:37.86\00:16:41.60 or made himself nothing, as He laid aside His divine privileges 00:16:41.60\00:16:46.56 and prerogatives. 00:16:46.56\00:16:48.03 In other words, He's - He's choosing by the incarnation to 00:16:48.03\00:16:53.53 put into a remission or in an inactive state certain powers 00:16:53.53\00:17:00.56 that are native to equality with God, and we put these in 3 basic 00:17:00.56\00:17:05.36 categories, and they are what we sometimes refer to as the 00:17:05.36\00:17:10.70 omni's. 00:17:10.70\00:17:12.50 God is omnipotent. 00:17:12.50\00:17:14.10 God is omniscient, and God is omnipresent, and these are the 00:17:14.10\00:17:20.76 abilities, the powers, that according to the testimony of 00:17:20.76\00:17:23.66 the Gospel accounts, Jesus laid aside on our behalf in order for 00:17:23.66\00:17:29.90 the cross to become an authentic experience, and there's evidence 00:17:29.90\00:17:32.66 for this in scripture. 00:17:32.66\00:17:33.76 It seems so enormous that it's unbelievable. 00:17:33.76\00:17:37.96 We think, no that can't, really? 00:17:37.96\00:17:39.56 Did He really come down that far? 00:17:39.56\00:17:40.70 Did He lay aside omnipotence? 00:17:40.70\00:17:42.50 Well, Jesus Himself testified. 00:17:42.50\00:17:44.23 He said in John 5:30, I can of mine own self do nothing. 00:17:44.23\00:17:50.80 - Same word there. 00:17:50.80\00:17:51.66 Nothing. 00:17:51.66\00:17:52.93 I don't know if it's the same Greek word, but it's the same 00:17:52.93\00:17:54.16 idea. 00:17:54.16\00:17:54.80 - Yeah. 00:17:54.80\00:17:56.03 So, if Jesus is, we see Him performing miracles and raising 00:17:56.03\00:17:57.53 the dead, the question is, is He exercising His own native 00:17:57.53\00:18:01.00 omnipotence to heal the sick and raise the dead? 00:18:01.00\00:18:03.96 Or is He utilizing and tapping into the omnipotence of the 00:18:03.96\00:18:08.40 Father as a human being? 00:18:08.40\00:18:09.96 Later on... 00:18:09.96\00:18:10.96 - That we all have access to. 00:18:10.96\00:18:12.53 That we all have access to. 00:18:12.53\00:18:13.83 - Yeah! 00:18:13.83\00:18:14.93 Peter and Paul healed the sick and raised the dead. 00:18:14.93\00:18:16.66 They're not natively omnipotent. 00:18:16.66\00:18:19.43 They were tapping into the omnipotence of the Father. 00:18:19.43\00:18:22.40 What's fascinating because in Acts chapter 2 it says that 00:18:22.40\00:18:26.26 Jesus did many signs and wonders, comma, which God did 00:18:26.26\00:18:30.63 through Him. 00:18:30.63\00:18:31.86 So, so we're witnessing the Father's omnipotence on display 00:18:31.86\00:18:35.40 through Jesus the human begin, so He laid aside His 00:18:35.40\00:18:39.33 omnipotence. 00:18:39.33\00:18:40.43 So, what about omniscience? 00:18:40.43\00:18:42.36 The Bible says in Luke's account of the Gospel... 00:18:42.36\00:18:46.00 - We should break down what that even means. 00:18:46.00\00:18:47.63 - Omniscience means to know everything, of course. 00:18:47.63\00:18:49.46 Omniscience. 00:18:49.46\00:18:50.63 Omnipotence, all power, and omniscience, all knowing. 00:18:50.63\00:18:53.90 To know everything. 00:18:53.90\00:18:55.16 And Luke's Gospel says, of Jesus, that the child grew in 00:18:55.16\00:19:01.20 knowledge, as well as in stature, it says. 00:19:01.20\00:19:06.16 Stature meaning, biologically He grew up and went through 00:19:06.16\00:19:08.56 phases... 00:19:08.56\00:19:09.56 - But He grew up intellectually as well. 00:19:09.56\00:19:11.06 - But, but He grew intellectually. 00:19:11.06\00:19:13.20 He grew, He grew in His knowledge. 00:19:13.20\00:19:14.43 That He learned things. 00:19:14.43\00:19:16.10 Things came to be known by Him. 00:19:16.10\00:19:18.93 Now, that's not a description of omniscience. 00:19:18.93\00:19:22.43 God never, never learns anything in His omniscience. 00:19:22.43\00:19:26.26 He never has an ah-ha moment. 00:19:26.26\00:19:28.00 God never, ever says, whoa, I never thought of that before. 00:19:28.00\00:19:31.86 The fact is that Jesus is in a different state now. 00:19:31.86\00:19:36.56 He's in a different state of being. 00:19:36.56\00:19:37.96 He's laid aside these omni's and it's an incredible humility and 00:19:37.96\00:19:44.13 condescension. 00:19:44.13\00:19:45.40 - Maybe that's why He says in Matthew 24 and verse 36, but of 00:19:45.40\00:19:48.83 the day and the hour knoweth no man, no not the angels of 00:19:48.83\00:19:53.16 heaven, but my Father only. 00:19:53.16\00:19:54.43 - Yeah, that's right. 00:19:54.43\00:19:57.13 So, we're going to take a quick break here. 00:19:57.13\00:19:58.40 Ty, you've unpacked omnipotent and omniscient, but I want you 00:19:58.40\00:20:00.46 to speak when we come back even to the issue of omnipresence. 00:20:00.46\00:20:03.16 - Ok. 00:20:03.16\00:20:04.43 - And, we're going to talk just here in our break about, um, a 00:20:04.43\00:20:06.60 school that we all teach at, uh, Arise Australia is our new 00:20:06.60\00:20:11.73 school, and Arise here in America has been running just 00:20:11.73\00:20:13.90 over a decade, and it's a great program. 00:20:13.90\00:20:15.90 We've had hundreds of people, young and old alike come and be 00:20:15.90\00:20:19.40 trained at that, and so we're gonna see a little short on 00:20:19.40\00:20:21.90 that. 00:20:21.90\00:20:22.63 - Amen. 00:20:22.63\00:20:23.83 - ARISE originally started from an acronym and it was a A 00:20:23.83\00:20:32.20 Resource Institute for Soul-Winning and Evangelism. 00:20:32.20\00:20:35.13 So we see ourselves not only as a Bible-working, training, 00:20:35.13\00:20:38.63 evangelism ministry, but as as something more rounded and more 00:20:38.63\00:20:42.16 beautiful and more biblical. 00:20:42.16\00:20:43.53 A discipleship ministry where that sharing, that ministry, 00:20:43.53\00:20:47.03 that evangelism grows out of a rock solid, faith-based 00:20:47.03\00:20:51.36 relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:20:51.36\00:20:53.43 [music] 00:20:53.43\00:20:57.50 - Since I got here to ARISE, I have been captivated since day 00:20:57.50\00:21:00.43 one. 00:21:00.43\00:21:02.10 The teaching and instruction has been phenomenal. 00:21:02.10\00:21:03.70 God has truly blessed us, um, in giving us both practical and 00:21:03.70\00:21:06.36 theoretical, um, guidance, that we may, as Bible workers go out 00:21:06.36\00:21:11.33 and do a good work for the Lord. 00:21:11.33\00:21:12.70 - The program is very practical because not only do you get the 00:21:12.70\00:21:20.03 classroom instruction, but we deliberately designed the 00:21:20.03\00:21:23.30 program in such a way that the students are out on the streets 00:21:23.30\00:21:26.93 and in the homes. 00:21:26.93\00:21:28.20 - The reality is, is that every single year that our students go 00:21:28.20\00:21:30.36 door to door, they encounter people that would otherwise 00:21:30.36\00:21:33.26 never ever step foot in a church anywhere. 00:21:33.26\00:21:37.40 - There's 24 students here and 240 contacts have been made by 00:21:37.40\00:21:40.56 knocking on doors. 00:21:40.56\00:21:42.10 - So the students are out knocking on doors making 00:21:42.10\00:21:45.03 contacts with people in the community to lead them to the 00:21:45.03\00:21:47.26 mission where they'll hear the Gospel preached by an 00:21:47.26\00:21:49.73 evangelist. 00:21:49.73\00:21:51.00 - And so we have the freedom to choose how and when we worship, 00:21:51.00\00:21:53.56 right? 00:21:53.56\00:21:54.56 So, there is no enforced Sunday observance yet. 00:21:54.56\00:21:58.40 - It's been a real privilege to be a part of the crusades and to 00:21:58.40\00:22:02.00 put into practice that which we are learning, and to see what 00:22:02.00\00:22:05.13 God is doing in our lives putting into practice, and in 00:22:05.13\00:22:09.26 the lives of those which we are reaching out to. 00:22:09.26\00:22:11.60 it's been my joy to pray with people, to go visit with people, 00:22:11.60\00:22:14.76 to see people from the doors that we've been knocking on 00:22:14.76\00:22:17.30 getting baptized. 00:22:17.30\00:22:18.56 - We just reached the end of the 18 meetings that we've had here. 00:22:18.56\00:22:22.20 The first ARISE mission that's been run here in Australia. 00:22:22.20\00:22:25.80 Um, the students have been involved in door knocking, Bible 00:22:25.80\00:22:29.40 studies, reaching people at the mission, and it's been such a 00:22:29.40\00:22:32.93 great success. 00:22:32.93\00:22:34.20 - God has been so good to me in giving me this opportunity to 00:22:34.20\00:22:37.30 learn more about Him, the one who I desire to be like, the one 00:22:37.30\00:22:41.20 who I desire to serve all the days of my life, and whether He 00:22:41.20\00:22:44.80 wants me to do a medical profession, whether He wants me 00:22:44.80\00:22:47.76 to do anything, I know that I've been planted on a sure 00:22:47.76\00:22:50.60 foundation, and that's upon His Word. 00:22:50.60\00:22:52.30 [Music] 00:22:52.30\00:22:59.90 So, basically ARISE is a discipleship training school. 00:22:59.90\00:23:03.43 I'm just rejoicing to be a part of it, and uh, the students are 00:23:03.43\00:23:07.46 just a blessing to interact with, and uh, the school now in 00:23:07.46\00:23:13.50 Australia is giving us an opportunity to - to basically 00:23:13.50\00:23:17.23 train young people, or people of any age, to understand the 00:23:17.23\00:23:21.06 scriptures and to really become a vibrant genuine witness for 00:23:21.06\00:23:26.26 Christ in whatever their vocation happens to be that 00:23:26.26\00:23:28.76 they're pursuing in life. 00:23:28.76\00:23:29.83 So, praise God. 00:23:29.83\00:23:30.80 - James just got back from the graduation. 00:23:30.80\00:23:32.96 - ARISE Australia. 00:23:32.96\00:23:34.40 - In ARISE Australia. 00:23:34.40\00:23:35.66 I just got an email from Matt Parr this morning, and he said, 00:23:35.66\00:23:37.93 and he's been to probably seven or eight ARISE commissionings 00:23:37.93\00:23:40.16 and graduations, and he said, uh, in the email he just sent 00:23:40.16\00:23:43.16 this morning that this one that you were just at was a 10 out of 00:23:43.16\00:23:46.13 10, and he said he was crying, he just couldn't, he was just 00:23:46.13\00:23:48.93 crying, and uh... 00:23:48.93\00:23:50.43 - Jim just sent an email that said, um, this side of heaven, 00:23:50.43\00:23:53.50 what was it? 00:23:53.50\00:23:54.83 - It doesn't get any better than this. 00:23:54.83\00:23:56.70 [laughter] 00:23:56.70\00:23:57.66 - Yeah. 00:23:57.66\00:23:58.20 - Praise God. 00:23:58.20\00:23:58.63 Beautiful. 00:23:58.63\00:23:59.33 That was such a beautiful class. 00:23:59.33\00:24:00.63 All the classes are beautiful, but that inaugural class in 00:24:00.63\00:24:02.46 Australia, man they were special. 00:24:02.46\00:24:04.00 - It was powerful. 00:24:04.00\00:24:04.63 God's Spirit was there. 00:24:04.63\00:24:05.90 - Well, speaking of Australia, one of the fascinating things 00:24:05.90\00:24:08.46 I've encountered there on my various trips is t-shirts in 00:24:08.46\00:24:13.46 stores and hats and bumper stickers that say something very 00:24:13.46\00:24:19.33 fascinating. 00:24:19.33\00:24:20.23 Welcome to the top of the world. 00:24:20.23\00:24:21.40 - Right. 00:24:21.40\00:24:23.23 - Because, they're called down under, and we live in the 00:24:23.23\00:24:28.13 northern hemisphere. 00:24:28.13\00:24:29.20 They live in the southern hemisphere, and they're 00:24:29.20\00:24:30.83 basically making the point that really in the larger scheme of 00:24:30.83\00:24:35.46 things in space, who's to say who's on the top and who's on 00:24:35.46\00:24:38.40 the bottom. 00:24:38.40\00:24:39.20 [laughter] 00:24:39.20\00:24:40.20 - I just said that to someone the other day. 00:24:40.20\00:24:41.43 Somebody's response to me was, they said, oh that's obvious 00:24:41.43\00:24:43.50 because the compass points to magnetic north, and I said, well 00:24:43.50\00:24:46.70 why couldn't we just have said, the compass points to magnetic 00:24:46.70\00:24:49.36 south. 00:24:49.36\00:24:50.60 - Because it does. 00:24:50.60\00:24:52.30 [laugher] 00:24:52.30\00:24:53.56 - Well, but, just call north, south, and say that's the top 00:24:53.56\00:24:54.93 and it always goes to the bottom and then we're off to the races. 00:24:54.93\00:24:56.90 - It's rather arbitrary, but in the character and kingdom of God 00:24:56.90\00:24:59.93 it's not arbitrary. 00:24:59.93\00:25:01.20 The fact is that in God's character the way to up is down, 00:25:01.20\00:25:04.86 the top is the bottom, the bottom is the top. 00:25:04.86\00:25:06.40 - The first shall be last. 00:25:06.40\00:25:07.56 The last shall be first. 00:25:07.56\00:25:08.43 - That's right. 00:25:08.43\00:25:09.43 - And we all sense and know what the bottom is. 00:25:09.43\00:25:10.53 We were talking about that in relation to travel. 00:25:10.53\00:25:12.83 I was thinking about that in coach class bathrooms, and 00:25:12.83\00:25:16.06 another thought came to me and that is... 00:25:16.06\00:25:18.10 - We're still in the plane. 00:25:18.10\00:25:19.33 - Well, notice what it says here in Philippians 2, one little 00:25:19.33\00:25:21.33 statement here... 00:25:21.33\00:25:22.43 - I'm never gonna read this verse again the same. 00:25:22.43\00:25:24.33 I will always be thinking... 00:25:24.33\00:25:25.56 - He made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a 00:25:25.56\00:25:27.40 servant. 00:25:27.40\00:25:28.36 - Yeah. 00:25:28.36\00:25:29.63 It's as if he's saying, right there, welcome to the top of the 00:25:29.63\00:25:32.10 world. 00:25:32.10\00:25:33.30 - When I'm on that plane, there's one person that's in the 00:25:33.30\00:25:35.70 back by the bathroom, there's one person that's still lower 00:25:35.70\00:25:38.43 than me. 00:25:38.43\00:25:39.16 They don't even have a seat. 00:25:39.16\00:25:40.40 They give them a jump seat, and that is the stewardess, the 00:25:40.40\00:25:42.30 servant. 00:25:42.30\00:25:43.26 - Wow, you're really unpacking this. 00:25:43.26\00:25:44.73 - The one that is there to serve. 00:25:44.73\00:25:46.33 - You see the Gospel in this entire experience. 00:25:46.33\00:25:49.56 - I see the Gospel on the plane too, actually, because I'm 00:25:49.56\00:25:51.43 always big on online check-in. 00:25:51.43\00:25:54.33 Always make sure you got a good seat before, right? 00:25:54.33\00:25:58.10 But people don't do that, people just show up and they get their 00:25:58.10\00:26:00.30 thing and just... 00:26:00.30\00:26:01.16 - That's me. 00:26:01.16\00:26:02.03 - Blows my mind. 00:26:02.03\00:26:02.70 I don't understand it. 00:26:02.70\00:26:03.30 - Oh, I do that too. 00:26:03.30\00:26:04.10 I'm with ya. 00:26:04.10\00:26:04.73 I'm with ya. 00:26:04.73\00:26:05.43 - So, I got to all this trouble. 00:26:05.43\00:26:06.63 - Some of us are more oriented towards self and more self 00:26:06.63\00:26:08.03 serving and we want to make sure... 00:26:08.03\00:26:09.66 - But watch this amazing condescension on my behalf. 00:26:09.66\00:26:11.60 Watch this. 00:26:11.60\00:26:12.63 - Ok. 00:26:12.63\00:26:13.63 On your behalf? 00:26:13.63\00:26:14.43 Look at his humility. 00:26:14.43\00:26:15.43 Look at his humility. 00:26:15.43\00:26:16.66 - Watch my humility just exude from here. 00:26:16.66\00:26:17.90 So I go through all this trouble to get the proper seat, and 00:26:17.90\00:26:20.73 I'm sitting down and I'm so, I'm so thankful, and I see 00:26:20.73\00:26:24.13 people all, you know, complaining at the seat, they 00:26:24.13\00:26:27.40 got the middle seat, and I'm like, that's your bad, right? 00:26:27.40\00:26:30.26 So then, then the flight... 00:26:30.26\00:26:32.23 - Cause you're a Christian. 00:26:32.23\00:26:33.33 The heart of a true Christian. 00:26:33.33\00:26:34.03 [laughter] 00:26:34.03\00:26:34.76 - That's what I was gonna say. 00:26:34.76\00:26:36.03 - My Christianity's coming up here in a second. 00:26:36.03\00:26:37.26 Then the flight attendant comes and says, sir, uh, I'm sorry 00:26:37.26\00:26:40.16 to interrupt you, but, and then she goes on to explain to me 00:26:40.16\00:26:42.56 that there's a lady who has back pain who got the middle seat, 00:26:42.56\00:26:45.66 and she's saying, do you mind? 00:26:45.66\00:26:48.20 And I say, so what other seats are available? 00:26:48.20\00:26:49.93 A middle seat in the back. 00:26:49.93\00:26:52.30 And I'm like, [sucking in air] 00:26:52.30\00:26:54.93 ... 00:26:54.93\00:26:55.80 - Take a deep breath. 00:26:55.80\00:26:56.70 - Lord Jesus, soften my heart. 00:26:56.70\00:26:57.73 - Recite Philippians 2. 00:26:57.73\00:26:58.83 - Philippians chapter 2. 00:26:58.83\00:26:59.66 [laughter] 00:26:59.66\00:27:00.50 - So, so that's Jesus, man. 00:27:00.50\00:27:02.40 So He... 00:27:02.40\00:27:03.30 - He gets up. 00:27:03.30\00:27:04.70 - He gets up, you know, and He takes the back seat, knowing 00:27:04.70\00:27:07.70 that had the other, had we, had she checked in she would have 00:27:07.70\00:27:13.46 avoided that. 00:27:13.46\00:27:15.33 It was her fault, not my fault, and yet you're in that 00:27:15.33\00:27:19.20 situation, so I gotta admit that it was a great joy to be able to 00:27:19.20\00:27:22.26 say, absolutely, and see her face like, thank you so much. 00:27:22.26\00:27:25.00 - I'm basking right now in the radiance of your humility. 00:27:25.00\00:27:27.56 [laughter] 00:27:27.56\00:27:28.83 - So, no, no, but, correction, that was Jesus shining through 00:27:28.83\00:27:32.00 me. 00:27:32.00\00:27:32.70 - Ok. 00:27:32.70\00:27:33.30 - That's what it was. 00:27:33.30\00:27:34.73 - Christ's humility in you. 00:27:34.73\00:27:35.93 - Love it. 00:27:35.93\00:27:36.70 Love it. 00:27:36.70\00:27:37.63 - Hey, we were in Philippians chapter 2. 00:27:37.63\00:27:40.10 - You were finishing up the omni's. 00:27:40.10\00:27:41.26 Could you do that for us? 00:27:41.26\00:27:42.46 - Yeah, so we were basically saying that - that Jesus in 00:27:42.46\00:27:46.16 becoming human laid aside His divine prerogatives and 00:27:46.16\00:27:50.60 privileges. 00:27:50.60\00:27:51.66 That's the language of the Phillips translation. 00:27:51.66\00:27:53.86 In the NIV, it's, He made Himself nothing. 00:27:53.86\00:27:57.36 That's - that's amazing in and of, made Himself nothing, He 00:27:57.36\00:28:01.50 became a servant, and it goes on and it tells us that the reason 00:28:01.50\00:28:04.63 He did that is so He could suffer at the cross, even the 00:28:04.63\00:28:08.66 death of the cross. 00:28:08.66\00:28:09.93 So, we went through omnipotence, and we saw in chapter 5 verse 30 00:28:09.93\00:28:14.66 in the Gospel of John that Jesus testified of Mine own self I can 00:28:14.66\00:28:17.76 do nothing. 00:28:17.76\00:28:18.90 Then we saw regarding omniscience, or all knowing... 00:28:18.90\00:28:23.06 - He grew in wisdom... 00:28:23.06\00:28:24.20 - Yeah, he grew in wisdom... 00:28:24.20\00:28:25.63 - Yeah, get to omnipresence, you've been over this. 00:28:25.63\00:28:27.46 Get to omnipresence. 00:28:27.46\00:28:28.33 - Omnipresence. 00:28:28.33\00:28:29.00 Calm down. 00:28:29.00\00:28:29.96 Calm down. 00:28:29.96\00:28:31.16 Omnipresence is the hardest one biblically, in my opinion. 00:28:31.16\00:28:32.83 Uh, but I do see that there was the experience of Mary with 00:28:32.83\00:28:38.00 Jesus post resurrection, and that's part of what makes it 00:28:38.00\00:28:40.43 hard for me, where He says to her as she's holding Him, He 00:28:40.43\00:28:43.73 says, detain me not for I have, do you... 00:28:43.73\00:28:48.50 - For I have not yet ascended to My Father. 00:28:48.50\00:28:51.56 - For I have not yet ascended to the Father. 00:28:51.56\00:28:53.00 That's - that's a space statement. 00:28:53.00\00:28:54.26 That's a location statement. 00:28:54.26\00:28:56.43 That's a presence statement, and Jesus is essentially saying, I'm 00:28:56.43\00:29:00.70 right here with you, Mary, right now. 00:29:00.70\00:29:02.36 I'm not with the Father. 00:29:02.36\00:29:04.16 I haven't seen the Father yet. 00:29:04.16\00:29:06.10 I haven't ascended to the Father. 00:29:06.10\00:29:07.80 I'm right here, right now with you. 00:29:07.80\00:29:12.06 - So, there's geographical restriction there, right? 00:29:12.06\00:29:14.26 there's actually another one that's really, really blatant in 00:29:14.26\00:29:17.96 John 16 - Yep, John 16. 00:29:17.96\00:29:21.90 - Where Jesus is speaking to His disciples and He's basically, He 00:29:21.90\00:29:25.53 says something and they're just like, what? 00:29:25.53\00:29:27.60 In verse 7 He says, nevertheless I tell you the truth, it is to 00:29:27.60\00:29:31.56 your advantage that I leave you. 00:29:31.56\00:29:35.50 And you can just imagine... 00:29:35.50\00:29:37.50 - That must have sounded like... 00:29:37.50\00:29:38.63 - What? 00:29:38.63\00:29:39.90 That's like telling your wife, sweetie, I'm not gonna see you 00:29:39.90\00:29:41.93 again, um, but trust me. 00:29:41.93\00:29:43.73 It's for your own good. 00:29:43.73\00:29:44.93 It's like, what do you mean? 00:29:44.93\00:29:46.40 And then it continues, because if I do not go away, the Helper 00:29:46.40\00:29:49.50 will not come to you. 00:29:49.50\00:29:50.66 But if I depart, I will send Him to you. 00:29:50.66\00:29:53.03 I think that's kind of what you're saying there. 00:29:53.03\00:29:55.73 There seems, there's a message here of Jesus is acknowledging 00:29:55.73\00:29:58.26 that He has become so one with humanity that there's something 00:29:58.26\00:30:01.50 going on with the whole omnipresent thing. 00:30:01.50\00:30:04.40 - Right. 00:30:04.40\00:30:05.53 Right, well I think the point is that this renders His 00:30:05.53\00:30:07.73 temptations in the wilderness and His experience at the cross, 00:30:07.73\00:30:12.66 in fact His whole experience as a human being, it renders it 00:30:12.66\00:30:16.56 authentic. 00:30:16.56\00:30:17.33 It's real. 00:30:17.33\00:30:18.60 In other words, He's not - He's not apparently going through a 00:30:18.60\00:30:24.20 temptation or a struggle or a sacrifice as a projection or as 00:30:24.20\00:30:30.70 a charade or something that's just for us to look at and say, 00:30:30.70\00:30:34.00 oh it, that, it looks like He's suffering. 00:30:34.00\00:30:36.63 It looks like He's tempted, but we all know, wink, nod, 00:30:36.63\00:30:40.46 theologically, no, no, the whole time He's transcending the 00:30:40.46\00:30:43.86 suffering. 00:30:43.86\00:30:45.36 He's transcending the temptation. 00:30:45.36\00:30:46.60 He's not transcending it. 00:30:46.60\00:30:47.86 He's actually experiencing it. 00:30:47.86\00:30:50.06 - It's real. 00:30:50.06\00:30:51.33 There was an early, one of the early Christian heresies that 00:30:51.33\00:30:53.73 the Church had to grapple with at the end of the second, 00:30:53.73\00:30:55.90 beginning of the third century was a heresy called Docetism, 00:30:55.90\00:30:58.76 and the word basically comes from the Greek word that means 00:30:58.76\00:31:03.10 "to seem." 00:31:03.10\00:31:04.36 To seem or to appear, and I'll just read here just a quick, uh, 00:31:04.36\00:31:08.80 description of what Docetism was. 00:31:08.80\00:31:11.03 It's exactly what you're describing. 00:31:11.03\00:31:13.00 This is from Wikipedia. 00:31:13.00\00:31:14.20 It says, the doctrine according to which the phenomenon of 00:31:14.20\00:31:16.60 Christ, His historical and bodily existence, and thus above 00:31:16.60\00:31:21.30 all, the human form of Jesus was all together mere semblance 00:31:21.30\00:31:25.36 without any true reality. 00:31:25.36\00:31:28.46 Broadly it is taken that Jesus only seemed to be human, and 00:31:28.46\00:31:32.50 that His physical body was a phantasm, which just means a - 00:31:32.50\00:31:36.10 an apparition. 00:31:36.10\00:31:37.70 - A phantom. 00:31:37.70\00:31:38.96 - A - a - a - like a projection, and there were very good reasons 00:31:38.96\00:31:42.06 for this in - in the uh early church because they were so 00:31:42.06\00:31:47.26 saturated, as we are in different ways today, with Greek 00:31:47.26\00:31:49.20 thinking, with Greek ideas, and one of those Greek ideas was 00:31:49.20\00:31:52.43 that God was just pure existence, pure being, and in 00:31:52.43\00:31:55.46 that sense fundamentally different from, cut off from and 00:31:55.46\00:31:59.26 non-integrated with the material world. 00:31:59.26\00:32:03.70 - The Gnostics were into that, yeah? 00:32:03.70\00:32:06.30 - Well, Docetism was part, was a kind of Gnosticism, so the idea 00:32:06.30\00:32:09.06 here is, well that couldn't really have been... 00:32:09.06\00:32:11.56 - God wouldn't do that! 00:32:11.56\00:32:13.03 - And not only that He wouldn't, but He couldn't. 00:32:13.03\00:32:14.80 Yeah, that's right. 00:32:14.80\00:32:15.70 That it was a projection. 00:32:15.70\00:32:16.96 So your point is awesome here, that scripture doesn't treat the 00:32:16.96\00:32:19.80 incarnation that way. 00:32:19.80\00:32:21.16 The scripture says, no, no, no, no, He was really tempted in all 00:32:21.16\00:32:24.73 point for the purpose of suffering so that He, and I 00:32:24.73\00:32:27.63 think you're exactly on. 00:32:27.63\00:32:29.20 The reason for all this is not just little, theological 00:32:29.20\00:32:32.20 details. 00:32:32.20\00:32:33.33 It's so that He could experience that which He couldn't 00:32:33.33\00:32:35.36 experience if He remained aloof from us in heaven. 00:32:35.36\00:32:37.73 - If it were a projection, God would be the ultimate hypocrite. 00:32:37.73\00:32:40.43 God would be the ultimate actor whose basically telling us a 00:32:40.43\00:32:45.46 lie. 00:32:45.46\00:32:46.70 - Yeah, and if Jesus didn't become human, if He remained God 00:32:46.70\00:32:48.33 and didn't become human, He couldn't be tempted. 00:32:48.33\00:32:50.33 James says that God can't be tempted. 00:32:50.33\00:32:52.50 - Yeah, he cannot be tempted with evil, that's right. 00:32:52.50\00:32:55.90 - But He was literally tempted. 00:32:55.90\00:32:57.70 - Can we go to Matthew 4? 00:32:57.70\00:32:58.80 Can we do that? 00:32:58.80\00:33:00.26 - Yes. 00:33:00.26\00:33:00.83 Let's go there. 00:33:00.83\00:33:01.93 - Um, Ty, I love, by the way, what you just said. 00:33:01.93\00:33:03.20 Absolutely love what you just said about if He was, if it was 00:33:03.20\00:33:04.70 a projection, and if He was just pretending, then God is... 00:33:04.70\00:33:10.93 - The ultimate hypocrite. 00:33:10.93\00:33:13.93 - He's the ultimate hypocrite because check...that's actually 00:33:13.93\00:33:16.46 what the word hypocrite means, as you know, to act, but check 00:33:16.46\00:33:18.10 this out. 00:33:18.10\00:33:19.33 Even actors in a movie, when an actor is acting in a movie, 00:33:19.33\00:33:21.53 whatever movie star, or a guy or a girl, we all know and they 00:33:21.53\00:33:25.43 know, there's an agreed upon awareness, that's not really who 00:33:25.43\00:33:28.66 they are. 00:33:28.66\00:33:29.56 They're pretending, right? 00:33:29.56\00:33:30.70 So, so we give them a pass, so to speak, but if God was 00:33:30.70\00:33:33.73 pretending all along, but not letting on. 00:33:33.73\00:33:37.83 Oh, no, no, pretending like it's real, but actually...in other 00:33:37.83\00:33:41.26 words, if that's what was going on behind the curtain, 00:33:41.26\00:33:43.50 Wizard of Oz style, so to speak, well then, what kind of a God is 00:33:43.50\00:33:45.33 that anyway? 00:33:45.33\00:33:48.13 That is outright deception, and that is, runs exactly against 00:33:48.13\00:33:52.10 the grain and against the character of what we've been 00:33:52.10\00:33:53.90 learning about God up to this point. 00:33:53.90\00:33:55.16 - Did the disciples struggle believing that it was actually 00:33:55.16\00:33:57.93 Him and it was the real thing? 00:33:57.93\00:33:59.36 - Of course they did! 00:33:59.36\00:34:00.70 Of course they did! 00:34:00.70\00:34:01.93 - When He appeared to them, didn't He say like, didn't He 00:34:01.93\00:34:04.20 say, uh, anybody got any fish? 00:34:04.20\00:34:05.43 - Yeah. 00:34:05.43\00:34:06.23 - Yeah. 00:34:06.23\00:34:06.80 - Anybody got any fish? 00:34:06.80\00:34:07.56 - This was post resurrection. 00:34:07.56\00:34:08.70 - Yeah, post resurrection. 00:34:08.70\00:34:09.76 Yeah, yeah. 00:34:09.76\00:34:10.70 - Touch Me and see this is flesh and blood. 00:34:10.70\00:34:11.86 - Anybody got any food? 00:34:11.86\00:34:13.26 This is the real thing. 00:34:13.26\00:34:14.53 - Jeffrey, it's the real thing after the resurrection, so this 00:34:14.53\00:34:15.80 loops back to the point that you made back at the beginning of 00:34:15.80\00:34:18.43 our conversation, and that is that He's retained our humanity. 00:34:18.43\00:34:20.96 - Yeah. 00:34:20.96\00:34:22.43 - Jesus didn't take our humanity into the grave and then come out 00:34:22.43\00:34:26.23 of the grave in the resurrection having laid it aside. 00:34:26.23\00:34:29.93 He came out of the grave as much a human being as He went into 00:34:29.93\00:34:33.83 the grave, with a glorified body, yes, but as much a human 00:34:33.83\00:34:38.30 being as He went into the grave, and He took that very humanity 00:34:38.30\00:34:41.00 to the highest heavens, and He's there right now, a member of the 00:34:41.00\00:34:45.70 human race. 00:34:45.70\00:34:46.50 Our brother. 00:34:46.50\00:34:47.16 A member of the human race. 00:34:47.16\00:34:48.60 - God is also a member of the human race. 00:34:48.60\00:34:50.66 - One of my favorite authors uses the language that - that 00:34:50.66\00:34:54.30 heaven, or that humanity is enshrined in the bosom of 00:34:54.30\00:34:58.30 heaven, or something like that. 00:34:58.30\00:34:59.90 - Bosom of divinity. 00:34:59.90\00:35:01.06 - Yeah, it's enshrined. 00:35:01.06\00:35:03.46 That - that the picture frame around the humanity of Christ is 00:35:03.46\00:35:06.13 divinity. 00:35:06.13\00:35:07.40 He is God and, you called Him earlier, the God-man, and you 00:35:07.40\00:35:09.13 use that language, that's like our own invented word but 00:35:09.13\00:35:12.70 because it's a, it's a new novel, unique reality, what else 00:35:12.70\00:35:16.70 are you gonna call it? 00:35:16.70\00:35:18.43 He's God. 00:35:18.43\00:35:19.83 He's man. 00:35:19.83\00:35:20.50 He's the God-man. 00:35:20.50\00:35:22.06 - It's a mystery. 00:35:22.06\00:35:23.33 - So, so in Matthew 4, we have here the three temptations, and 00:35:23.33\00:35:26.20 I don't know how much depth you want to go into here, but the 00:35:26.20\00:35:28.46 fact that the Bible calls these temptations. 00:35:28.46\00:35:31.56 I'll just read here verse 1, now Jesus was let up by the Spirit 00:35:31.56\00:35:33.83 into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, and when 00:35:33.83\00:35:37.10 He had fasted 40 days and 40 nights, there's huge 00:35:37.10\00:35:39.23 significance there, we won't get into right now, afterward he was 00:35:39.23\00:35:41.60 hungry. 00:35:41.60\00:35:42.73 That's one of the great understatements of the Bible, 00:35:42.73\00:35:44.43 um, then he answered and, but ok, so now, if you are the Son 00:35:44.43\00:35:49.56 of God, command these stone to be made bread. 00:35:49.56\00:35:51.50 He says, it is written, man shall live, um, not by bread 00:35:51.50\00:35:54.40 alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of 00:35:54.40\00:35:56.16 God. 00:35:56.16\00:35:57.43 Then the second temptation, it says here that um, if you're the 00:35:57.43\00:36:00.30 Son of God then throw yourself down because it's written that 00:36:00.30\00:36:02.56 the angels will take care of you. 00:36:02.56\00:36:03.43 I'm just summarizing here. 00:36:03.43\00:36:04.66 Verse 7, it is written again, you shall not tempt the Lord 00:36:04.66\00:36:07.36 your God. 00:36:07.36\00:36:08.60 Verse 8, now again the devil took Him on an exceedingly high 00:36:08.60\00:36:09.93 mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their 00:36:09.93\00:36:11.66 glory and said to Him, all these things I will give you if you 00:36:11.66\00:36:14.56 will fall down and worship me. 00:36:14.56\00:36:16.30 Then Jesus said, away from me. 00:36:16.30\00:36:17.56 Away with you, Satan, for it is written, you shall worship the 00:36:17.56\00:36:19.93 Lord your God with, you shall worship the Lord your God and 00:36:19.93\00:36:22.26 Him only shall you serve. 00:36:22.26\00:36:23.53 Then the devil left Him, now, here's the thing I want to bring 00:36:23.53\00:36:25.10 out. 00:36:25.10\00:36:26.36 I'd be very interested to see if you guys have some insights here 00:36:26.36\00:36:26.96 too. 00:36:26.96\00:36:28.23 Each of these three temptations, first of all, the lust of the 00:36:28.23\00:36:31.23 flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. 00:36:31.23\00:36:32.73 The very same temptation... 00:36:32.73\00:36:34.40 - Good point, from 1 John there. 00:36:34.40\00:36:35.70 - 1 John chapter 2. 00:36:35.70\00:36:36.80 Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life. 00:36:36.80\00:36:39.43 Now check this out, each temptation was a legitimate, 00:36:39.43\00:36:44.56 Satan tapped into a legitimate desire on behalf of Satan, but 00:36:44.56\00:36:50.30 to access that legitimate desire in an illegitimate way. 00:36:50.30\00:36:53.40 - On behalf of Christ. 00:36:53.40\00:36:54.43 A legitimate desire on behalf of Christ. 00:36:54.43\00:36:56.33 - Yeah, so for example. 00:36:56.33\00:36:57.26 - A legitimate desire on behalf of Christ. 00:36:57.26\00:36:59.50 - Ok, so maybe I can just say it... 00:36:59.50\00:37:01.60 - Christ had a legitimate desire. 00:37:01.60\00:37:03.03 - Christ's desire were legitimate. 00:37:03.03\00:37:04.13 - Yes. 00:37:04.13\00:37:05.40 - So, for example, being hungry after having not eaten for 40 00:37:05.40\00:37:07.56 days is a legitimate desire, but Satan's desire was not to 00:37:07.56\00:37:10.70 satisfy an illegitimate desire, but a legitimate desire in an 00:37:10.70\00:37:14.10 illegitimate way. 00:37:14.10\00:37:15.56 The second temptation, cast yourself down from the temple. 00:37:15.56\00:37:18.36 Everyone will see that you're supernatural. 00:37:18.36\00:37:20.60 They'll follow you. 00:37:20.60\00:37:21.70 You'll be a messiah figure. 00:37:21.70\00:37:23.63 That's appealing to a natural, legitimate desire in the heart 00:37:23.63\00:37:26.83 of Jesus to be followed as the Messiah, but he says, fulfill it 00:37:26.83\00:37:30.60 in an illegitimate way. 00:37:30.60\00:37:32.30 And the third temptation, all the kingdoms of the earth I will 00:37:32.30\00:37:35.50 give you. 00:37:35.50\00:37:36.20 That was what Jesus wanted. 00:37:36.20\00:37:37.63 - That's what He came for. 00:37:37.63\00:37:38.93 - So in each instance, it's a legitimate temptation, a 00:37:38.93\00:37:41.93 legitimate temptation, but always to go about it in an 00:37:41.93\00:37:46.16 illegitimate way. 00:37:46.16\00:37:47.96 - And isn't that exactly what happened in Genesis chapter 3? 00:37:47.96\00:37:51.00 With Eve. 00:37:51.00\00:37:51.86 You just broke down 3 categories there. 00:37:51.86\00:37:54.46 - Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:37:54.46\00:37:55.66 - It almost seems like, in Genesis chapter 3 it tells us 00:37:55.66\00:37:59.60 that Adam and Eve were tempted with the fruit on the tree, and 00:37:59.60\00:38:03.46 then they fell, and then verse 15 the promise. 00:38:03.46\00:38:05.23 The promise in verse 15 is telling us that at some point in 00:38:05.23\00:38:09.33 history the Messiah will come and nail it where she failed. 00:38:09.33\00:38:13.00 Be victorious where she failed, so three temptations, and 1 John 00:38:13.00\00:38:17.36 chapter 2, you said that you were quoting from... 00:38:17.36\00:38:21.03 - 14, 15, 16. 00:38:21.03\00:38:22.03 - It's 3 categories... 00:38:22.03\00:38:23.26 - 15, 16, 17. 00:38:23.26\00:38:24.16 - Yeah. 00:38:24.16\00:38:25.43 - And those 3 categories, I'm just saying, you can see that in 00:38:25.43\00:38:27.60 Genesis 3. 00:38:27.60\00:38:28.56 It's almost like repeat and enlarge. 00:38:28.56\00:38:29.86 History repeats itself. 00:38:29.86\00:38:31.06 - In other words, not the legitimate desire part, but the 00:38:31.06\00:38:32.86 3 temptation part. 00:38:32.86\00:38:34.30 - Yeah, he's approaching at three different angles. 00:38:34.30\00:38:36.03 - Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life. 00:38:36.03\00:38:38.50 - Is there anything fascinating..... 00:38:38.50\00:38:40.53 - Which is what she was tempted with, in other words. 00:38:40.53\00:38:42.30 - That's right. 00:38:42.30\00:38:43.56 - She was tempted with the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, 00:38:43.56\00:38:45.00 and pride of life to be like God. 00:38:45.00\00:38:46.96 - Desire, because it says that the fruit would make you become 00:38:46.96\00:38:49.46 wise. 00:38:49.46\00:38:50.16 - It looked good to the eyes. 00:38:50.16\00:38:50.93 Right, make one wise. 00:38:50.93\00:38:51.70 Good to the eating. 00:38:51.70\00:38:52.43 - You'll be like God. 00:38:52.43\00:38:53.20 - You'll be like God. 00:38:53.20\00:38:54.46 I love, before we move on here, I just love it here where Satan 00:38:54.46\00:38:56.16 makes an offer to Jesus, and he says, the glory of all the 00:38:56.16\00:38:59.56 kingdoms, I will, all the kingdoms of the world, I will 00:38:59.56\00:39:02.53 give this to you if you...so this is interesting because 00:39:02.53\00:39:05.63 Satan is claiming ownership of all the kingdoms of the world, 00:39:05.63\00:39:10.36 so when Jesus comes into this world in, in the incarnation, 00:39:10.36\00:39:14.30 He's stepping into... 00:39:14.30\00:39:15.63 - Satan's territory. 00:39:15.63\00:39:17.53 - Satan's territory. 00:39:17.53\00:39:18.36 He's coming to reclaim... 00:39:18.36\00:39:19.33 - Enemy occupied territory. 00:39:19.33\00:39:20.43 - Enemy occupied territory. 00:39:20.43\00:39:21.66 - Luke's Gospel renders it a little bit different and expands 00:39:21.66\00:39:25.03 the idea, um, in verse 6 of chapter 4, 4 verse 6 of the 00:39:25.03\00:39:29.40 Gospel of Luke. 00:39:29.40\00:39:30.80 All this authority I will give you and their glory, for this 00:39:30.80\00:39:32.33 has been delivered to me. 00:39:32.33\00:39:33.93 - That's right. 00:39:33.93\00:39:35.10 - So the, for this has been delivered to me part is 00:39:35.10\00:39:37.43 referring back to the Fall in Genesis 3. 00:39:37.43\00:39:40.00 - We delivered it to him because we were given dominion. 00:39:40.00\00:39:41.70 - Human beings were given the stewardship of the earth, were 00:39:41.70\00:39:44.73 given the earth. 00:39:44.73\00:39:46.00 You remember we referenced in a previous conversation, uh, Psalm 00:39:46.00\00:39:49.36 115, even the whole heavens are the Lord's but the earth He has 00:39:49.36\00:39:52.43 given to the children of men, so Adam and Eve are the co-regents 00:39:52.43\00:39:56.13 of planet earth, and by their fall, not only was it a moral 00:39:56.13\00:40:01.43 fall, but it was a governmental fall. 00:40:01.43\00:40:03.33 - There's a legal element to it. 00:40:03.33\00:40:04.96 - Yeah, there was a legal transfer of power into the hands 00:40:04.96\00:40:08.73 of the enemy, and that's why Jesus even in chapter 12 in the 00:40:08.73\00:40:13.43 Gospel of John refers to him as the prince, or the ruler... 00:40:13.43\00:40:17.00 - Of this world. 00:40:17.00\00:40:18.43 - Of this world. 00:40:18.43\00:40:19.33 Yeah. 00:40:19.33\00:40:20.60 - Jesus does not, and I know we have to take a break here, but I 00:40:20.60\00:40:22.60 just want to say this real quickly, Jesus does not deny 00:40:22.60\00:40:25.53 that the world was Satan's to give. 00:40:25.53\00:40:28.20 When he says, all this I will give you, He doesn't say, who do 00:40:28.20\00:40:31.06 you think? 00:40:31.06\00:40:32.30 He understands and acquiesces to a basic legality in the fact 00:40:32.30\00:40:36.96 that, you have a regency of this earth. 00:40:36.96\00:40:39.70 - And He's about to take it back... 00:40:39.70\00:40:41.20 - That's right. 00:40:41.20\00:40:42.36 - By a different set of principles. 00:40:42.36\00:40:44.46 - That's right. 00:40:44.46\00:40:45.73 - By different means, and that's - that's what we'll be looking 00:40:45.73\00:40:47.43 at when we come back after the break. 00:40:47.43\00:40:49.10 - Beautiful. 00:40:49.10\00:40:49.90 - Amen. 00:40:49.90\00:40:50.70 [ music ] 00:40:50.70\00:40:57.80 There are certain key truths that every person on planet 00:40:57.80\00:41:00.30 earth vitally needs to know. 00:41:00.30\00:41:01.80 Truths that operate like a compass pointing our hearts True 00:41:01.80\00:41:05.23 North. 00:41:05.23\00:41:06.53 To All The World is a unique, magazine-style publication that 00:41:06.53\00:41:10.06 highlights several of these vital truths. 00:41:10.06\00:41:11.90 For your free copy, call 877.585.1111 or write to Light 00:41:11.90\00:41:17.80 Bearers, 37457 Jasper Lowell Rd, Jasper, OR 97438. 00:41:17.80\00:41:24.43 Once again or your free copy of To All The World, call 00:41:24.43\00:41:28.46 877.585.1111 or write to Light Bearers, 37457 Jasper Lowell Rd, 00:41:28.46\00:41:36.36 Jasper, OR 97438. 00:41:36.36\00:41:39.20 Simply ask for To All The World. 00:41:39.20\00:41:41.80 [ music ] 00:41:41.80\00:41:52.43 - See that? 00:42:18.90\00:42:19.50 [laughter] 00:42:19.50\00:42:20.20 - Here's - here's the thing. 00:42:20.20\00:42:21.33 The - the incarnation prepared the way for the cross. 00:42:21.33\00:42:23.40 That's what David was emphasizing in Hebrews 2. 00:42:23.40\00:42:26.50 - That's right. 00:42:26.50\00:42:27.53 - And verse 9, right? 00:42:27.53\00:42:28.30 - The word "that." 00:42:28.30\00:42:29.33 - The word "that." 00:42:29.33\00:42:30.56 Ok, Jesus became human that he might taste death for every 00:42:30.56\00:42:34.03 human being, right? 00:42:34.03\00:42:35.16 So, so we've talked about the Incarnation and what it 00:42:35.16\00:42:38.23 entailed. 00:42:38.23\00:42:39.66 Now, the cross needs to be explored in the light of the 00:42:39.66\00:42:44.83 Incarnation. 00:42:44.83\00:42:46.00 That's the point. 00:42:46.00\00:42:47.20 Now, I don't know where you guys want to go or what you're 00:42:47.20\00:42:49.80 thinking about the cross, but I'd like to start in Matthew 26. 00:42:49.80\00:42:52.40 - Ok. 00:42:52.40\00:42:53.20 Yeah. 00:42:53.20\00:42:53.80 - Matthew 26. 00:42:53.80\00:42:55.00 So, in Matthew 26 Jesus is entering into Gethsemane with 00:42:55.00\00:43:00.40 His disciples, and as He makes His way with them into this 00:43:00.40\00:43:07.86 place of prayer that He's visited before, the Garden of 00:43:07.86\00:43:10.10 Gethsemane, in verse 36, then Jesus came with them to the 00:43:10.10\00:43:14.70 place called Gethsemane and said to His disciples, sit here while 00:43:14.70\00:43:19.16 I go and pray over there. 00:43:19.16\00:43:21.53 Verse 37, and He took with Him Peter and the two sons of 00:43:21.53\00:43:25.30 Zebedee, that's James and John, and He began to be sorrowful and 00:43:25.30\00:43:29.93 deeply distressed. 00:43:29.93\00:43:31.46 Now watch this language in verse 38. 00:43:31.46\00:43:34.00 Then He said to them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto 00:43:34.00\00:43:40.26 death, even to the point of death. 00:43:40.26\00:43:43.00 Stay here and watch with me. 00:43:43.00\00:43:44.26 Verse 39, and He went a little farther and He fell on His face, 00:43:44.26\00:43:46.80 and He prayed saying, oh my Father, if it is possible, let 00:43:46.80\00:43:51.00 this cup pass from Me. 00:43:51.00\00:43:53.30 Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. 00:43:53.30\00:43:56.00 This, He hasn't even reached the cross yet, and I wanna, I wanna 00:43:56.00\00:44:02.50 just point out, Jesus tells the disciples, right here, right 00:44:02.50\00:44:07.03 now, in the Garden of Gethsemane, before any physical 00:44:07.03\00:44:10.70 torture has been inflicted upon Him, He says I'm dying at the 00:44:10.70\00:44:14.43 soul level of my being. 00:44:14.43\00:44:17.66 The word soul here in the Greek is psyche. 00:44:17.66\00:44:20.83 Psyche. 00:44:20.83\00:44:22.23 Jesus is experiencing some kind of psychological agony, some 00:44:22.23\00:44:27.70 kind of psychological trauma that's - that's - that's inching 00:44:27.70\00:44:31.16 into death. 00:44:31.16\00:44:33.10 He, he says, I'm dying right here in the Garden of 00:44:33.10\00:44:36.40 Gethsemane. 00:44:36.40\00:44:37.36 He's obviously not dying of physical causes. 00:44:37.36\00:44:40.40 They haven't tortured Him yet. 00:44:40.40\00:44:42.16 He hasn't been crucified yet. 00:44:42.16\00:44:43.60 Jesus is experiencing something far more significant than mere 00:44:43.60\00:44:48.46 suffering and death. 00:44:48.46\00:44:52.90 Jesus is taking into Himself the sin of the word in some sense 00:44:52.90\00:44:57.96 that we could never fully comprehend. 00:44:57.96\00:44:59.66 - The weight of the sins of the world are beginning to crush the 00:44:59.66\00:45:01.96 life out of Him. 00:45:01.96\00:45:03.80 - That's right. 00:45:03.80\00:45:05.06 - It's, do you think it's almost as if, I don't know how far to 00:45:05.06\00:45:07.26 take that, but it's almost as if the cross is inconsequential. 00:45:07.26\00:45:10.10 Even if the cross hadn't approached, at some point Christ 00:45:10.10\00:45:14.23 would have died. 00:45:14.23\00:45:15.13 - Man, that's a huge thought. 00:45:15.13\00:45:16.23 - Christ, the weight would have crushed Him. 00:45:16.23\00:45:17.80 The fact that the cross was on His path happened to be the way. 00:45:17.80\00:45:22.26 - Jeffery, that triggers a thought. 00:45:22.26\00:45:23.60 I think that there's Biblical evidence for that, and it's in 00:45:23.60\00:45:26.60 Luke's Gospel, where while Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, 00:45:26.60\00:45:31.50 He was so heavy... 00:45:31.50\00:45:32.83 - That's exactly... 00:45:32.83\00:45:34.06 - And He's sweating, Luke's Gospel adds, He was sweating, as 00:45:34.06\00:45:35.86 it were, great drops of blood, and then an angel of God 00:45:35.86\00:45:39.13 appeared strengthening Him. 00:45:39.13\00:45:40.63 - I'm literally parked right there. 00:45:40.63\00:45:43.80 - Are you? 00:45:43.80\00:45:45.06 The implication is that Jesus would have died in Gethsemane 00:45:45.06\00:45:46.46 and never reached the cross if the angel had not intervened to 00:45:46.46\00:45:50.10 strengthened Him. 00:45:50.10\00:45:52.30 - That's right. 00:45:52.30\00:45:53.16 - The very point that you're making. 00:45:53.16\00:45:55.06 - That's heavy. 00:45:55.06\00:45:56.26 So, so the mission was so intense that Jesus had to invoke 00:45:56.26\00:46:01.86 so to speak, help in order to lift Him up as He was, as He was 00:46:01.86\00:46:07.13 there. 00:46:07.13\00:46:07.86 I love the language here. 00:46:07.86\00:46:08.63 Being in agony. 00:46:08.63\00:46:09.36 - Not physical agony, right? 00:46:09.36\00:46:12.13 - It's gotta be beyond physical. 00:46:12.13\00:46:13.43 If it was just physical... 00:46:13.43\00:46:15.00 - Well, well, I think we can't say. 00:46:15.00\00:46:16.56 Go ahead. 00:46:16.56\00:46:17.66 You go ahead, and then I'll say what I'm gonna say. 00:46:17.66\00:46:20.33 - I was just gonna say, if it was merely physical, then 00:46:20.33\00:46:22.43 somebody pointed out, there's been generals, army generals 00:46:22.43\00:46:25.33 that have died for their people or died... 00:46:25.33\00:46:28.33 - In torturous ways. 00:46:28.33\00:46:29.76 - In torturous ways, and let's be, let's be honest, Christ was 00:46:29.76\00:46:32.43 tortured, no doubt, but surely we can conceive of other 00:46:32.43\00:46:36.16 physical tortures throughout history that would have been 00:46:36.16\00:46:39.56 equal to or even more horrific. 00:46:39.56\00:46:41.03 - Certainly. 00:46:41.03\00:46:43.63 - Right? 00:46:43.63\00:46:44.63 So, the awe here is not merely in the physical. 00:46:44.63\00:46:47.70 It has to go beyond the physical. 00:46:47.70\00:46:48.76 - That's right. 00:46:48.76\00:46:50.10 You got my point. 00:46:50.10\00:46:51.36 - I think beyond is good, and not merely. 00:46:51.36\00:46:53.30 That, that would be the accurate language. 00:46:53.30\00:46:56.06 He did suffer physically, no doubt about it, but what's 00:46:56.06\00:46:57.66 happening in Gethsemane is described by Jesus Himself in 00:46:57.66\00:46:59.93 John chapter 3, I'll just throw these out, and by Paul in 2 00:46:59.93\00:47:05.00 Corinthians 5:21. 00:47:05.00\00:47:06.26 In John 3, Jesus likened Himself and His upcoming sacrifice on 00:47:06.26\00:47:10.16 the cross to the serpent being lifted up on the pole in the 00:47:10.16\00:47:13.10 wilderness. 00:47:13.10\00:47:14.26 The serpent, throughout scripture, as we've talked about 00:47:14.26\00:47:16.96 on a previous conversation is associated with sin and evil and 00:47:16.96\00:47:21.70 the devil, in fact. 00:47:21.70\00:47:23.33 So, Jesus, Jesus, we always think of Him in terms of, He's 00:47:23.33\00:47:27.73 the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and that's 00:47:27.73\00:47:31.20 an accurate symbol as well, but here Jesus in John 3 identifies 00:47:31.20\00:47:34.56 with the serpent? 00:47:34.56\00:47:35.90 He identifies with, with the emblem of evil itself? 00:47:35.90\00:47:38.73 And then, in 2 Corinthians 5:21, Paul says, tells us exactly 00:47:38.73\00:47:45.43 what's happening here. 00:47:45.43\00:47:46.93 He says, He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might 00:47:46.93\00:47:52.93 become the righteousness of God in Him, so sin. 00:47:52.93\00:47:55.96 He's, he's taking upon Himself, into Himself sin, shame, guilt. 00:47:55.96\00:48:03.10 He's experiencing what does Isaiah 53 say? 00:48:03.10\00:48:06.93 Numbered with the transgressors, as if He Himself is guilty of 00:48:06.93\00:48:12.20 sin? 00:48:12.20\00:48:13.66 - You know, Ty, that text in 2 Corinthians 5:21, I was, I began 00:48:13.66\00:48:17.13 to read this a bit differently just trying to put myself in the 00:48:17.13\00:48:20.93 text, and - and every place where it says He or Him to 00:48:20.93\00:48:24.40 insert who it's referring to, and when it talks about sin, to 00:48:24.40\00:48:28.00 just pick a sin, just pick a any sin. 00:48:28.00\00:48:30.56 Let me just explain what I'm saying here. 00:48:30.56\00:48:33.20 For the Father, now I'm inserting, for the Father... 00:48:33.20\00:48:37.70 - Just repeat the verse you're on. 00:48:37.70\00:48:41.23 I know you said it once, but just so we're all there. 00:48:41.23\00:48:43.63 - 2 Corinthians 5:21. 00:48:43.63\00:48:45.46 For the Father made the Son who knew no lies to be a liar for 00:48:45.46\00:48:51.00 Jeffrey. 00:48:51.00\00:48:52.56 So that Jeffrey might become the righteousness of God in the Son. 00:48:52.56\00:48:58.53 So, in every way, you were just saying that He became 00:48:58.53\00:49:03.00 identified. 00:49:03.00\00:49:04.93 He's the serpent. 00:49:04.93\00:49:06.33 He's not just the lamb, He's also the serpent, but the 00:49:06.33\00:49:08.00 serpent was the symbol of... 00:49:08.00\00:49:10.03 - Of evil and sin. 00:49:10.03\00:49:11.56 - Of evil and sin, so Jesus becomes identified with that. 00:49:11.56\00:49:14.80 - Although He's perfectly innocent. 00:49:14.80\00:49:16.66 - On our behalf. 00:49:16.66\00:49:17.93 And so I always picture, like DVD's in heaven, like there's a 00:49:17.93\00:49:20.56 big old library of DVD's that represent each and every one of 00:49:20.56\00:49:23.16 our lives, and the Gospel message is that God presses play 00:49:23.16\00:49:27.46 on the DVD and Jeffrey's story plays. 00:49:27.46\00:49:29.60 In every juncture where there's sin in my life, He presses 00:49:29.60\00:49:34.83 pause, I'm out of the frame, and Jesus in in the frame. 00:49:34.83\00:49:37.66 - Wow. 00:49:37.66\00:49:39.06 - And he presses un-pause, and the movie plays on, and Jesus 00:49:39.06\00:49:42.43 now begins to take my place in every single point in my life, 00:49:42.43\00:49:46.30 and I think that's what that text is communicating. 00:49:46.30\00:49:49.26 He has become sin for, for the human race. 00:49:49.26\00:49:53.16 - He, He was not Himself a sinner, but He was treated as a 00:49:53.16\00:49:59.16 sinner. 00:49:59.16\00:50:00.36 He had the experience of a sinner, in fact, you're there, 00:50:00.36\00:50:02.20 so I'm just gonna quickly grab that. 00:50:02.20\00:50:05.16 If we go back to the covenantal faithfulness theme that's we've 00:50:05.16\00:50:06.96 been carrying through here.... 00:50:06.96\00:50:07.90 - That's exactly where I was going... 00:50:07.90\00:50:09.13 - Oh, well you go, go there, because - No, no, you got it. 00:50:09.13\00:50:10.43 You got it. 00:50:10.43\00:50:11.23 You got it. 00:50:11.23\00:50:11.73 Go. 00:50:11.73\00:50:13.00 - Un, 2 Corinthians 5:21, for He hath made Him, for the Father 00:50:13.00\00:50:15.16 has made the Son who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might 00:50:15.16\00:50:18.40 become the righteousness of God which is God's covenantal 00:50:18.40\00:50:22.23 faithfulness in the Messiah's faithfulness to the covenant. 00:50:22.23\00:50:25.73 And the truth of the cross is that He was faithful unto death. 00:50:25.73\00:50:28.80 There's this great line where C.S. 00:50:28.80\00:50:32.16 Lewis speaks about when a temptation comes to us, we often 00:50:32.16\00:50:36.00 don't feel the full force of the temptation because we give into 00:50:36.00\00:50:39.36 it, so you know, let's say the temptation is 10 units, we often 00:50:39.36\00:50:43.13 fall at 2 or 3 or 4 or 5, but Jesus, and there are some times 00:50:43.13\00:50:48.06 we overcome temptation, praise God, but every temptation that 00:50:48.06\00:50:50.33 came to Jesus, 10 out of 10, He exhausted it, so the 00:50:50.33\00:50:53.23 temptation... 00:50:53.23\00:50:54.20 - So, He took it to the most intense level? 00:50:54.20\00:50:55.70 - To the most...He exhausted the temptation, the temptation never 00:50:55.70\00:50:58.46 exhausted Him. 00:50:58.46\00:50:59.96 He was faithful unto death. 00:50:59.96\00:51:02.00 The temptation to, to cut Himself off from humanity. 00:51:02.00\00:51:06.60 The temptation to just whisk His way back to heaven was 00:51:06.60\00:51:09.50 overwhelming, and temptations just kept throwing themselves at 00:51:09.50\00:51:13.06 Christ, and He just exhausted each one. 00:51:13.06\00:51:15.43 It came to Him, and they fell like toy soldiers. 00:51:15.43\00:51:17.46 - I love that, because there's a meter that the devil... 00:51:17.46\00:51:20.03 - Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:51:20.03\00:51:22.00 - He pumps up the volume, but he only has to pump it up so far, 00:51:22.00\00:51:24.33 and then I fall. 00:51:24.33\00:51:25.33 - Well of course he's pumping up the volume... 00:51:25.33\00:51:26.33 - In a sense it's like running a marathon. 00:51:26.33\00:51:28.06 - Very much so. 00:51:28.06\00:51:29.30 - Because - because that first 10 miles, even the first 15 00:51:29.30\00:51:30.70 miles, it's hard, but when you get to those final miles... 00:51:30.70\00:51:35.36 - Yeah, the 20, the 22. 00:51:35.36\00:51:38.93 - Then you experience the physical exertion to the point 00:51:38.93\00:51:42.36 of an intensity that you want to succumb to. 00:51:42.36\00:51:45.80 - The human body just want to shut down. 00:51:45.80\00:51:47.66 - Yeah. 00:51:47.66\00:51:48.90 We've run like 5 miles or 10 miles, and we, we stop and yield 00:51:48.90\00:51:51.33 to the temptation, but Jesus ran the gambit of sin straight to 00:51:51.33\00:51:55.50 the conclusion. 00:51:55.50\00:51:56.73 - Sure, because we always say that He was tempted in every 00:51:56.73\00:51:59.60 form that we've been tempted in, but then you think, was Jesus 00:51:59.60\00:52:01.76 ever a teenager in Miami? 00:52:01.76\00:52:06.33 Was Jesus ever a single mom in the Bronx? 00:52:06.33\00:52:09.70 You know? 00:52:09.70\00:52:11.06 What do you mean He was tempted in every single form? 00:52:11.06\00:52:14.00 But I think that's the point is that in every possible category, 00:52:14.00\00:52:16.86 the devil pumped up the volume all the way up, and it 00:52:16.86\00:52:21.33 encompasses every possible human scenario. 00:52:21.33\00:52:24.23 - Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. 00:52:24.23\00:52:26.60 - But there's more than temptation, although that's 00:52:26.60\00:52:29.23 huge. 00:52:29.23\00:52:30.50 There's something going on at the cross and, in Gethsemane and 00:52:30.50\00:52:34.60 at the cross that Isaiah 53 outlines that is just 00:52:34.60\00:52:37.70 phenomenal, that you're talking about, Jeffrey. 00:52:37.70\00:52:40.53 In chapter 53 of Isaiah, verse 6, notice the language here, 00:52:40.53\00:52:44.86 it's a - it's a messianic prophecy pointing forward to 00:52:44.86\00:52:47.96 Jesus. 00:52:47.96\00:52:49.03 It says, all we like sheep have gone astray. 00:52:49.03\00:52:53.10 We have turned everyone to his own way, and the Lord, that's 00:52:53.10\00:52:57.86 God the Father, has laid on Him, that's Jesus the Messiah, the 00:52:57.86\00:53:01.40 iniquity of us all, so here the - the sin problem in total is 00:53:01.40\00:53:08.26 put upon Jesus. 00:53:08.26\00:53:09.60 He's bearing it, but here's the thing, He's not bearing it as a 00:53:09.60\00:53:13.16 mere physical weight upon His body. 00:53:13.16\00:53:16.30 It's not like a sack of rocks or potatoes. 00:53:16.30\00:53:18.06 It's not pressing on His shoulders. 00:53:18.06\00:53:21.16 It's pressing on His mind, because the prophecy goes on, if 00:53:21.16\00:53:24.56 you just skip down to verse 10, and yet it pleased the Lord to 00:53:24.56\00:53:27.90 bruise Him. 00:53:27.90\00:53:29.16 He has put Him to grief when You make His soul an offering for 00:53:29.16\00:53:34.16 sin. 00:53:34.16\00:53:35.00 He shall see His seed. 00:53:35.00\00:53:36.36 He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall 00:53:36.36\00:53:38.93 prosper in His hand. 00:53:38.93\00:53:40.33 Look at verse 11. 00:53:40.33\00:53:41.60 He shall see, that is, God the Father shall see the labor of 00:53:41.60\00:53:44.80 His soul. 00:53:44.80\00:53:46.73 The labor of the Messiah's soul under the weight of sin, and 00:53:46.73\00:53:51.00 then that labor is described in the latter part of verse 11 as 00:53:51.00\00:53:55.30 saying He shall bear their iniquities in His soul. 00:53:55.30\00:54:00.40 And then the final one, verse 12, it says, middle of verse 12, 00:54:00.40\00:54:04.33 because He poured out His soul unto death. 00:54:04.33\00:54:09.10 Later on, He bore the sin of the many and made intercession for 00:54:09.10\00:54:15.10 transgressors. 00:54:15.10\00:54:16.36 Repeatedly you have the language of, of bearing, carrying, sin, 00:54:16.36\00:54:22.06 it's weight, and we know from personal experience, at least in 00:54:22.06\00:54:25.26 a microcosm sense, what it means to bear the shame and weight of 00:54:25.26\00:54:30.40 sin, but we have never carried or borne the weight of our sin 00:54:30.40\00:54:37.13 in totality. 00:54:37.13\00:54:38.16 - No. 00:54:38.16\00:54:39.03 - We've felt guiltily. 00:54:39.03\00:54:40.30 We've felt shame, but we have never actually borne the full 00:54:40.30\00:54:44.23 psychological ramifications of our guilt. 00:54:44.23\00:54:47.66 - Yeah, look at these verses again in Isaiah 53 verses 3 and 00:54:47.66\00:54:50.36 4 because they set us up for this. 00:54:50.36\00:54:52.30 It says in verse 3, He was despised and rejected of men, a 00:54:52.30\00:54:56.03 man of sorrows, where does that take place? 00:54:56.03\00:54:58.76 - In the mind. 00:54:58.76\00:54:59.86 - Acquainted with grief. 00:54:59.86\00:55:01.33 Where does that take place? 00:55:01.33\00:55:02.60 - In the mind. 00:55:02.60\00:55:04.13 - We hid our faces from Him. 00:55:04.13\00:55:05.16 He was despised. 00:55:05.16\00:55:06.33 We didn't esteem Him. 00:55:06.33\00:55:07.76 Surely He has born our grief's. 00:55:07.76\00:55:09.60 He's carried our sorrows. 00:55:09.60\00:55:11.76 We esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted. 00:55:11.76\00:55:15.96 Where is all that happening? 00:55:15.96\00:55:17.30 Not just the grief's and the sorrows, but the way that we 00:55:17.30\00:55:20.93 relate to Him, the way that we esteem Him, or disesteem Him. 00:55:20.93\00:55:22.56 - It's, it's in the mind. 00:55:22.56\00:55:24.40 The thing I want to say about this is Paul in Galatians 3 00:55:24.40\00:55:26.43 says, cursed is everyone who hangs on the tree. 00:55:26.43\00:55:30.86 He's quoting Deuteronomy here. 00:55:30.86\00:55:32.80 We've talked a lot about covenant, and we don't have time 00:55:32.80\00:55:36.16 to develop this because we're coming to the end of the 00:55:36.16\00:55:38.10 conversation, but this would be something for our listeners to 00:55:38.10\00:55:39.96 think about, to tune into, and for us as well. 00:55:39.96\00:55:42.30 Jesus not only kept the covenant between God and man, according 00:55:42.30\00:55:48.66 to the covenant curses of Deuteronomy 28 and 29, Jesus 00:55:48.66\00:55:52.76 bore those covenant curses in Himself, so He is both the 00:55:52.76\00:55:57.70 positive aspect of the covenant. 00:55:57.70\00:55:59.93 He loved the Lord His God with all His heart, His mind and 00:55:59.93\00:56:02.16 soul, and His neighbor like Himself, but then He bears the 00:56:02.16\00:56:04.70 covenant curses, and hangs on the cross, forsaken, forlorned, 00:56:04.70\00:56:09.93 and tempted in both physical and especially mental and 00:56:09.93\00:56:14.10 psychological ways, and He exhausts the temptation. 00:56:14.10\00:56:17.66 His last words are, Father forgive them. 00:56:17.66\00:56:20.93 They don't know what they do. 00:56:20.93\00:56:21.73 - Yeah. 00:56:21.73\00:56:22.46 - And He dies. 00:56:22.46\00:56:23.66 - You know I can really relate to this in a personal way 00:56:23.66\00:56:25.16 because when I was a kid, I have a twin sister, and every once 00:56:25.16\00:56:28.33 and a while we would get into arguments and fight, and 00:56:28.33\00:56:31.76 physically I was stronger than her, and I've always known 00:56:31.76\00:56:36.36 that things don't hurt me as well physically. 00:56:36.36\00:56:39.53 She could hit me, and she could hurt me, and it really didn't 00:56:39.53\00:56:43.43 hurt, but what really hurt me was the fact that that she did 00:56:43.43\00:56:47.06 it. 00:56:47.06\00:56:47.96 It was the fact that she did it. 00:56:47.96\00:56:50.20 Even, in any situation, physically it wasn't that 00:56:50.20\00:56:53.73 physical pain. 00:56:53.73\00:56:54.63 - That's not the point. 00:56:54.63\00:56:55.93 - It was the mental. 00:56:55.93\00:56:56.90 It was the fact that someone could do that. 00:56:56.90\00:56:57.90 Someone could inflict that pain. 00:56:57.90\00:56:59.30 That's where I broke down. 00:56:59.30\00:57:01.06 That's where I felt the pain, and I think that when you look 00:57:01.06\00:57:04.16 at the cross and you look at all the physical pain, that is 00:57:04.16\00:57:07.76 allowed in order to give us an indication of the mental 00:57:07.76\00:57:11.00 suffering that Christ is going through. 00:57:11.00\00:57:12.90 - Jeffrey said something earlier. 00:57:12.90\00:57:14.46 When you first said it, I'll be honest, Jeffrey, I cringed just 00:57:14.46\00:57:16.20 a little bit. 00:57:16.20\00:57:17.46 I was like, oh, I - I drew back from it, but then I embraced it. 00:57:17.46\00:57:19.46 You said, in a sense the cross is almost inconsequential. 00:57:19.46\00:57:23.33 The, the actual physical, torturous suffering, that's not 00:57:23.33\00:57:27.80 the point. 00:57:27.80\00:57:28.66 It could have been in a field. 00:57:28.66\00:57:30.33 It could have been at a guillotine. 00:57:30.33\00:57:32.06 It could have been some other way. 00:57:32.06\00:57:34.30 It wasn't that, but the external, physical death is just 00:57:34.30\00:57:37.83 the surface, and I think you're right. 00:57:37.83\00:57:39.86 It's a window into what's going on in here. 00:57:39.86\00:57:43.10 - Yeah, yeah. 00:57:43.10\00:57:44.36 - It was the worst torture that could be, was created by man at 00:57:44.36\00:57:47.03 that time. 00:57:47.03\00:57:48.20 - The bottom line of this beautiful truth is that God 00:57:48.20\00:57:52.46 literally loves every human being more than His own life. 00:57:52.46\00:57:56.20 - That's right. 00:57:56.20\00:57:58.03 Hallelujah. 00:57:58.03\00:57:59.10 - Jesus became human, and he experienced all the 00:57:59.10\00:58:00.33 ramifications of our sin and guilt. 00:58:00.33\00:58:02.66 He took it to the cross. 00:58:02.66\00:58:04.36 He died on our behalf, not because His back was against a 00:58:04.36\00:58:07.83 wall or He had to, but because He literally loves us more than 00:58:07.83\00:58:09.70 Himself, and that is the ultimate fulfillment of the 00:58:09.70\00:58:15.43 covenant promise. 00:58:15.43\00:58:17.36 God is faithful in Christ. 00:58:17.36\00:58:20.70 - Yes. 00:58:20.70\00:58:21.86 - Amen. 00:58:21.86\00:58:22.56 - Thank you Jesus. 00:58:22.56\00:58:23.80 [Music] 00:58:23.80\00:58:26.36 To receive our free, monthly newsletter and a list of Light 00:58:26.36\00:58:28.70 Bearers resources, visit us online at LightBearers.org or 00:58:28.70\00:58:33.73 call us toll free at 877.585.1111. 00:58:33.73\00:58:38.20 You can also write to us at Light Bearers, 37457 Jasper 00:58:38.20\00:58:39.20
