[Music] 00:00:00.83\00:00:10.86 [Music] 00:00:10.86\00:00:19.86 >>You guys one of the most amazing things about human 00:00:21.53\00:00:23.46 nature is that we're communicators. 00:00:23.46\00:00:24.96 WE want to articulate and bring language to bear upon our 00:00:24.96\00:00:30.66 relationships with one another. 00:00:30.66\00:00:32.40 The reason we're communicators is because God is a 00:00:32.40\00:00:35.00 communicator, and we were made in His image. 00:00:35.00\00:00:38.00 That's why we have the word of God. 00:00:38.00\00:00:40.53 We have scripture because when God decided to communicate with 00:00:40.53\00:00:45.00 us He began to inspire prophets to compose ideas in words. 00:00:45.00\00:00:51.30 Jesus of course is the ultimate expression of God's 00:00:51.30\00:00:55.00 self-disclosure and His communication. 00:00:55.00\00:00:57.30 He is the word with a capital W. 00:00:57.30\00:00:59.46 >>Personification. 00:00:59.46\00:01:00.70 >>Yeah personification. 00:01:00.70\00:01:01.83 >>And sometimes we even communicate by saying nothing. 00:01:01.83\00:01:03.46 I mean we can actually say nothing and be communicating. 00:01:03.46\00:01:05.96 >>Yeah with our eyes, shrug of the shoulders. 00:01:05.96\00:01:08.20 Yeah, whatever we're communicating non-verbally. 00:01:08.20\00:01:11.76 >>I think though it would be good for us to continue to 00:01:11.76\00:01:14.96 communicate with words. 00:01:14.96\00:01:16.53 [Laughter] 00:01:16.53\00:01:18.63 >>Not to say nothing. 00:01:19.20\00:01:20.53 >>You mean as apposed to just staring at one another. 00:01:20.53\00:01:21.80 >>Sitting here saying nothing. 00:01:21.80\00:01:23.30 Yes. 00:01:23.30\00:01:24.53 >>There's a link here because we've been talking about the 00:01:24.53\00:01:25.80 covenant. 00:01:25.80\00:01:27.00 And the covenant is a way of God communicating to humanity. 00:01:27.00\00:01:30.03 And maybe somebody should do a review, because we're working 00:01:30.03\00:01:32.83 our way through the Old Testament. 00:01:32.83\00:01:34.36 >>Well I feel like what we sought in Genesis chapter 3. 00:01:34.36\00:01:36.90 That's what started for me. 00:01:36.90\00:01:37.96 I mean that's foundational to covenant. 00:01:37.96\00:01:40.10 Post-fall at least, we know there's a pre-fall covenant, you 00:01:40.10\00:01:44.16 know there's an agreement there. 00:01:44.16\00:01:45.43 But the post-fall covenant is Adam and Eve are spectators and 00:01:45.43\00:01:48.93 they're listening to a conversation between God and the 00:01:48.93\00:01:53.03 serpent, the snake, the deceiver, Satan. 00:01:53.03\00:01:54.76 And basically God is saying to him, to the serpent. 00:01:54.76\00:01:58.16 I am going to do something for them that is going to destroy 00:01:58.16\00:02:02.76 you. 00:02:02.76\00:02:04.00 You are going to have your day. 00:02:04.00\00:02:05.43 You're going to bruise my heel. 00:02:05.43\00:02:06.46 But I'm going to crush you. 00:02:06.46\00:02:07.73 And this is a promise that I am making to them that's going to 00:02:07.73\00:02:10.66 be fulfilled through the promise keeper, through the warrior that 00:02:10.66\00:02:13.86 is coming. 00:02:13.86\00:02:14.83 Now I like that. 00:02:14.83\00:02:15.73 That's foundational to covenant. 00:02:15.73\00:02:17.00 Everything that comes outside of that seems to be, well, not a 00:02:17.00\00:02:21.80 second covenant. 00:02:21.80\00:02:23.50 I wouldn't say that but the revelation of the failure for 00:02:23.50\00:02:26.23 humankind to keep covenant with God. 00:02:26.23\00:02:28.43 Yeah, I think that the best language is not--you recognize 00:02:28.43\00:02:32.20 that not that its a second covenant but that that is the, 00:02:32.20\00:02:35.20 sort of, promoidal, original covenant where God says this is 00:02:35.20\00:02:39.03 something that's going to happen. 00:02:39.03\00:02:42.33 I like the way that you says Adam is there, Eve is there. 00:02:42.33\00:02:44.96 They're the spectators to covenant. 00:02:44.96\00:02:47.80 God is saying this is something I will do. 00:02:47.80\00:02:49.76 I will put enmity, and we sort of already got through that to 00:02:49.76\00:02:54.56 get us up to about the time of Abraham. 00:02:54.56\00:02:56.73 We spent some time in the call of Abraham, of course originally 00:02:56.73\00:03:00.43 Abram. 00:03:00.43\00:03:01.70 And the whole concept there, and Ty did a great job of unpacking 00:03:01.70\00:03:05.70 the significance and the beauty, remember of the split pieces, 00:03:05.70\00:03:08.66 and God himself being the one who walks through that this is 00:03:08.66\00:03:13.86 what will be done to me if I'm not faithful to the covenant. 00:03:13.86\00:03:16.93 What we have then, is this picture where...where God is 00:03:16.93\00:03:20.10 extending His hand as the originator of the covenant...as 00:03:20.10\00:03:23.70 the creator of the covenant...as the one who will keep his 00:03:23.70\00:03:26.03 promises. 00:03:26.03\00:03:27.80 And everybody else's job, if you can use that language, including 00:03:27.80\00:03:32.53 Abraham. 00:03:32.53\00:03:33.76 But also Noah and Adam and the children of Israel right now 00:03:33.76\00:03:36.66 there 'job' is to believe those promises. 00:03:36.66\00:03:40.30 >>Amen. 00:03:40.30\00:03:41.56 >>Right and when you believe the promises of God then that will 00:03:41.56\00:03:43.16 create certain behaviors and actions within us. 00:03:43.16\00:03:46.30 But getting back to the time of Abraham, God takes his promise 00:03:46.30\00:03:50.20 to Abraham, you'll have a child, Abraham believes God. 00:03:50.20\00:03:51.80 And its accounted to him as convenental faithfulness. 00:03:51.80\00:03:56.76 OK you believe that I can do what I say I'll do. 00:03:56.76\00:03:59.63 Now if I could just be so bold as to sort of move quickly 00:03:59.63\00:04:02.90 through Abraham's history. 00:04:02.90\00:04:04.56 Abraham begat Issac, Issac--Jacob, Jacob-sons of 00:04:04.56\00:04:07.26 Jacob who come to be known as the children of Israel. 00:04:07.26\00:04:10.23 They then increase in--time---kind of super 00:04:10.23\00:04:15.63 simplifying here. 00:04:15.63\00:04:16.90 But a time of famine comes as they've grown, the go to Egypt. 00:04:16.90\00:04:19.23 But they continue to increase and Pharaoh gets nervous about 00:04:19.23\00:04:22.46 them. 00:04:22.46\00:04:23.73 They're eventually enslaved and that really gets us through it. 00:04:23.73\00:04:28.50 That's a super quick version of basically Genesis, the time of 00:04:28.50\00:04:31.40 Abraham down to Genesis, what is it 50 or 51. 00:04:31.40\00:04:33.56 So then we open in Exodus and now we're in the time of Moses. 00:04:33.56\00:04:35.43 >>Right. 00:04:35.43\00:04:36.10 >>Right? 00:04:36.10\00:04:37.30 Several hundred years have transpired now since the time of 00:04:37.30\00:04:39.76 Abram...Abraham but God is now longing to re-establish...maybe 00:04:39.76\00:04:45.86 that's the wrong word but to restate his covenant to his 00:04:45.86\00:04:49.03 people, the descendants of Abraham because God has made 00:04:49.03\00:04:51.80 that promise. 00:04:51.80\00:04:52.56 >>Yeah and it seems like 00:04:52.56\00:04:53.63 >>You are the descendants. 00:04:53.63\00:04:54.66 >>Yeah. 00:04:54.66\00:04:55.43 >>Go ahead...go ahead. 00:04:55.43\00:04:56.50 >>It seems like they've lost sight of it. 00:04:56.50\00:04:57.73 They've been in bondage for, you know, centuries now and they 00:04:57.73\00:04:59.26 have been completely captive to the Egyptians and the ways of 00:04:59.26\00:05:02.36 Egypt, the worship of Egypt, and the idolatry of Egypt. 00:05:02.36\00:05:05.36 It seems like God is reminding them or needing to remind them, 00:05:05.36\00:05:09.13 hey remember this covenant relationship that I wanted to 00:05:09.13\00:05:11.40 have with you...that I wanted to establish. 00:05:11.40\00:05:12.96 >>That I established with your Fathers. 00:05:12.96\00:05:14.36 >>Yes. 00:05:14.36\00:05:15.63 >>This is a statement that comes up repeatedly early in Exodus, 00:05:15.63\00:05:17.93 let my people go..my people. 00:05:17.93\00:05:19.76 >>My people. 00:05:19.76\00:05:20.66 >>My people...my people...my people. 00:05:20.66\00:05:22.13 >>That is to say...that is to say the descendants of Abraham. 00:05:22.13\00:05:24.10 >>That's covenant language. 00:05:24.10\00:05:25.26 >>That's covenant language because that goes back. 00:05:25.26\00:05:26.80 And that's a beautiful thing because God is telling the 00:05:26.80\00:05:29.00 Pharaoh: 'these are my people. 00:05:29.00\00:05:30.33 They belong to me.' And following that through right 00:05:30.33\00:05:33.00 before you get to chapter 20 where God has this amazing 00:05:33.00\00:05:36.30 manifestation. 00:05:36.30\00:05:37.23 >>Excellent stuff. 00:05:37.23\00:05:38.50 >>Excuse me Exodus chapter 20, where the law is..is presented 00:05:38.50\00:05:42.33 in 19 Exodus chapter 19--there's the preamble here in verse 3 and 00:05:42.33\00:05:47.30 Moses goes up to God and the Lord called to him from the 00:05:47.30\00:05:50.70 mountain and says 'Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob 00:05:50.70\00:05:54.70 and tell the children of Israel, you have seen what I did to the 00:05:54.70\00:06:00.26 Egyptians and how I bore you on Eagles wings and brought you to 00:06:00.26\00:06:04.66 myself. 00:06:04.66\00:06:05.86 Now therefore if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my 00:06:05.86\00:06:11.33 covenant..the language. 00:06:11.33\00:06:13.90 >>There's the language. 00:06:13.90\00:06:15.40 >>There's the language, then you shall be a special treasure to 00:06:15.40\00:06:17.93 me above all people for all the earth is mine. 00:06:17.93\00:06:19.56 This is God essentially reminding them of his covenant 00:06:19.56\00:06:24.83 faithfulness. 00:06:24.83\00:06:26.06 He's repeating history, he's saying you can see clearly that 00:06:26.06\00:06:29.90 I'm serious. 00:06:29.90\00:06:30.86 I'm not playing games. 00:06:30.86\00:06:32.96 I'm committed. 00:06:32.96\00:06:33.63 I've shown up in your lives. 00:06:33.63\00:06:34.70 I've delivered you. 00:06:34.70\00:06:36.00 I am here because I am pursuing you. 00:06:36.00\00:06:38.33 And this is all leading up to Exodus chapter 20 with this 00:06:38.33\00:06:42.00 awesome manifestation of the law of God. 00:06:42.00\00:06:45.16 >>So you did a great job there of sort of getting us up to 00:06:45.16\00:06:48.00 Exodus 19 and I love what you said early on there that that 00:06:48.00\00:06:51.60 refrain in early Exodus is let my people go..my people go..my 00:06:51.60\00:06:55.86 people go. 00:06:55.86\00:06:57.13 And a refrain that comes up in the Old Testament over and over 00:06:57.13\00:07:00.83 again is this I will be their God and they will be my people. 00:07:00.83\00:07:04.03 They will be my people...they're..you, hey those 00:07:04.03\00:07:06.13 are my people you have to let them go. 00:07:06.13\00:07:08.26 So God here then says I like it in verse 5 now therefore if you 00:07:08.26\00:07:14.36 will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant. 00:07:14.36\00:07:17.63 The reason that they were the people of God was because of the 00:07:17.63\00:07:21.50 covenant. 00:07:21.50\00:07:22.43 In fact just to [zipper sound] 00:07:22.43\00:07:25.00 fast forward way to the New Testament just very quickly 00:07:25.00\00:07:29.13 Paul's point when he talks about well what's the good in being a 00:07:29.13\00:07:31.20 Jew after the gospel has gone to the Jews and the Gentiles he 00:07:31.20\00:07:33.10 says well they receive the oracles of God. 00:07:33.10\00:07:35.96 They were the one--they were the recipients of the, Ty talked 00:07:35.96\00:07:39.70 about the communication---they were the recipient and we're 00:07:39.70\00:07:41.86 gonna see here as we're just getting into Exodus 20 and 00:07:41.86\00:07:46.33 beyond that those oracles that were given to them were the Ten 00:07:46.33\00:07:49.06 Commandments, the writings of Moses, the sanctuary system. 00:07:49.06\00:07:51.73 God entrusted a treasure trove of knowledge about Himself to 00:07:51.73\00:07:55.13 them. 00:07:55.13\00:07:56.36 They were his people and he called them to be true to the 00:07:56.36\00:07:59.43 covenant that he was seeking to establish. 00:07:59.43\00:08:01.96 >>This wasn't just for them, in other words, the idea that this 00:08:01.96\00:08:04.60 was just for the Jews and so it was just for this people, no 00:08:04.60\00:08:07.53 this was for them to share with the rest of the world. 00:08:07.53\00:08:10.10 They were the medium through--God was going--through 00:08:10.10\00:08:12.70 who God was going to bring relationship of himself to all 00:08:12.70\00:08:15.00 peoples and all nations. 00:08:15.00\00:08:17.33 >>To go back to Ty's opening line there about how we're all 00:08:17.33\00:08:21.06 communicators we long to communicate. 00:08:21.06\00:08:25.63 We communicate with our eyes, with our hand gestures, with our 00:08:25.63\00:08:27.50 mouth. 00:08:27.50\00:08:28.60 You could say that Israel was God's communication. 00:08:28.60\00:08:29.66 >>Yes. 00:08:29.66\00:08:31.03 >>Perfect. 00:08:31.03\00:08:31.80 >>To the earth. 00:08:31.80\00:08:32.86 >>Perfect. 00:08:32.86\00:08:34.13 >>He gave them the law. 00:08:34.13\00:08:35.50 He gave them--the Bible calls these the ten words, right? 00:08:35.50\00:08:39.10 The Ten Commandments it says the ten words that were written on 00:08:39.10\00:08:42.63 what were called the tablets of testimony. 00:08:42.63\00:08:45.03 So they were then to take those words and communicate them to 00:08:45.03\00:08:47.70 the surrounding nations and the surrounding peoples. 00:08:47.70\00:08:49.93 >>And it's really interesting because when you look at the 00:08:49.93\00:08:51.66 Bible when we did this earlier we talked about how the Bible 00:08:51.66\00:08:53.40 was inspired, how it is God's inspired pen. 00:08:53.40\00:08:56.33 In other words, its not word for word but there are certain words 00:08:56.33\00:08:59.26 that are written specifically, directly by the hand of God. 00:08:59.26\00:09:02.96 And these words that we're about to read are those words. 00:09:02.96\00:09:06.00 >>Yeah. 00:09:06.00\00:09:07.26 >>Yeah often times in the Ten Commandments we...we think that 00:09:07.26\00:09:12.30 the Ten Commandments begin with thou shalt not have no other 00:09:12.30\00:09:16.10 God's before me as we...as we come to chapter 20 of Exodus. 00:09:16.10\00:09:18.86 But the thing is that the covenant concept is front end in 00:09:18.86\00:09:24.86 the law itself. 00:09:24.86\00:09:27.46 Now I don't know what version I think you've got New King James 00:09:27.46\00:09:31.50 version. 00:09:31.50\00:09:32.23 >>Same King James. 00:09:32.23\00:09:33.33 >>James has King James version. 00:09:33.33\00:09:35.06 But in my New King James version when you look at Exodus 20 it 00:09:35.06\00:09:37.43 begins with verse 1 and God spoke all these words saying and 00:09:37.43\00:09:41.30 then in my version quote marks begin in verse 2. 00:09:41.30\00:09:45.03 So right now we're beginning to read what was inscribed with the 00:09:45.03\00:09:49.30 finger of God in the tablets of stone. 00:09:49.30\00:09:51.70 This is the covenant. 00:09:51.70\00:09:54.93 These are the tablets of the covenant and it doesn't begin, 00:09:54.93\00:10:01.06 as we look at the Ten Commandments with you shall have 00:10:01.06\00:10:03.13 no other God's before me. 00:10:03.13\00:10:06.86 It's not a you shall beginning, it's an I am and have done 00:10:06.86\00:10:09.60 beginning. 00:10:09.60\00:10:10.86 Verse 2 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land 00:10:10.86\00:10:12.20 of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, you shall have no other 00:10:12.20\00:10:15.36 God's before me. 00:10:15.36\00:10:16.43 So the progression of the thinking here in the Ten 00:10:16.43\00:10:20.16 Commandments is God stating I have delivered, I have set you 00:10:20.16\00:10:25.80 free therefore be free, experience what I have by my 00:10:25.80\00:10:30.43 mighty power achieved on your behalf, your liberation is my 00:10:30.43\00:10:35.20 achievement and now having achieved your liberation you 00:10:35.20\00:10:39.70 shall have no other God's before me and the Ten Commandments 00:10:39.70\00:10:44.36 then, if you understand them in the context of God's liberating 00:10:44.36\00:10:47.46 power. 00:10:47.46\00:10:48.73 The Ten Commandments sound more like God is making promises than 00:10:48.73\00:10:52.26 God is, you know, exacting behaviors as commands. 00:10:52.26\00:10:58.43 It's not..it's not you shall...you shall not I 00:10:58.43\00:11:01.43 delivered you, you shall not. 00:11:01.43\00:11:05.06 >>Is there something to the recital of history. 00:11:05.06\00:11:08.70 He's repeating the providential leading and I think there's 00:11:08.70\00:11:12.63 a---there's something there that applies personally like I need 00:11:12.63\00:11:16.76 to know that God is faithful. 00:11:16.76\00:11:19.93 I'm talking like real life now. 00:11:19.93\00:11:22.83 >>Right here, right now. 00:11:22.83\00:11:24.06 >>Like I need to know that I can trust God and I need to know 00:11:24.06\00:11:27.06 that it's possible to live according to his will. 00:11:27.06\00:11:30.66 And I think that's a beautiful thing so remembering what God 00:11:30.66\00:11:34.13 has done in the past is a powerful, powerful testimony 00:11:34.13\00:11:38.06 that God is--that we can trust him now and in the future. 00:11:38.06\00:11:41.33 >>There's a specific past that God is reminding them of in the 00:11:41.33\00:11:45.40 first commandment. 00:11:45.40\00:11:46.76 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of 00:11:46.76\00:11:49.23 Egypt, out of the house of bondage is referring straight 00:11:49.23\00:11:51.36 back to the passover deliverance. 00:11:51.36\00:11:55.03 It's talking about the lamb that was slain, the blood was placed 00:11:55.03\00:11:59.43 around the door, and you could say, I don't know, what do you 00:11:59.43\00:12:04.40 think about this? 00:12:04.40\00:12:05.66 You could say that because the first commandment specifically 00:12:05.66\00:12:08.50 is referring back to the slain lamb and the passover that the 00:12:08.50\00:12:13.60 cross of Christ is explicit or at least implicit in the first 00:12:13.60\00:12:19.80 commandment. 00:12:19.80\00:12:21.06 >>Amen. 00:12:21.06\00:12:21.83 >>Of course. 00:12:21.83\00:12:22.80 >There's blood--there's blood there. 00:12:22.80\00:12:24.10 >>So its redemption language. 00:12:24.10\00:12:25.16 Its deliverance language. 00:12:25.16\00:12:26.16 Its liberation language. 00:12:26.16\00:12:27.40 >>The passover precedes the deliverance of passover precedes 00:12:27.40\00:12:31.10 the moral exhortation of the Ten Commandments. 00:12:31.10\00:12:33.46 Before we ever get to the this is how we should live, 00:12:33.46\00:12:36.26 deliverance has already taken place. 00:12:36.26\00:12:38.10 I like two things that you said Ty and I want to play off both 00:12:38.10\00:12:41.50 of them. 00:12:41.50\00:12:42.70 The first is you are using Pauline language intentionally 00:12:42.70\00:12:44.93 or not when you said I've made you free so live in freedom. 00:12:44.93\00:12:48.20 That's Galatians 5. 00:12:48.20\00:12:49.96 >>Galatians 5:1. 00:12:49.96\00:12:51.23 >>Yeah Galatians 5 for freedom Christ set you free and we think 00:12:51.23\00:12:53.90 of that in terms of down toward the New Testament etc. but God's 00:12:53.90\00:12:57.23 M-O, his motis operandi has not changed. 00:12:57.23\00:13:00.76 He set the children of Israel free from Egyptian bondage so 00:13:00.76\00:13:03.90 they could live in freedom. 00:13:03.90\00:13:05.23 The second thing that I want to say is that you are exactly 00:13:05.23\00:13:08.43 correct that these are less prohibition and more promise. 00:13:08.43\00:13:11.83 And I think if you just take the word shall and translate it or 00:13:11.83\00:13:16.76 render it in its totally contextually and exojectically 00:13:16.76\00:13:19.86 sound to do so, render it as will, you get a better feel for 00:13:19.86\00:13:24.83 the commandment. 00:13:24.83\00:13:26.83 You will not commit adultery. 00:13:26.83\00:13:28.93 You will not have other God's before me. 00:13:28.93\00:13:32.00 This is now a promise of what can and will happen if you live 00:13:32.00\00:13:34.43 in the light of my love and my deliverance. 00:13:34.43\00:13:37.03 >>Yeah that's powerful. 00:13:37.03\00:13:39.73 That's exactly the point. 00:13:39.73\00:13:41.00 In the first commandment then God is basically saying--He's 00:13:41.00\00:13:46.50 saying I've achieved the whole thing on your behalf. 00:13:46.50\00:13:51.10 You just need to live by faith in the recognition of what I've 00:13:51.10\00:13:56.96 done for you. 00:13:56.96\00:13:57.76 >>If..if--let me just say this. 00:13:57.76\00:13:59.33 This is something that I absolutely love when I teach the 00:13:59.33\00:14:01.86 law, the Ten Commandments I just go quickly through the first 00:14:01.86\00:14:04.10 four commandments and I show--I say very simply this, that the 00:14:04.10\00:14:07.86 first commandment is you will have no other God's before me. 00:14:07.86\00:14:10.13 That is God asking for us to give him our affections. 00:14:10.13\00:14:15.40 When I married my wife the minister said to us do you take 00:14:15.40\00:14:18.46 this woman to have and to hold. 00:14:18.46\00:14:20.06 Not literally to own her like you would own a trinket. 00:14:20.06\00:14:22.60 But to have her, to hold her, to give her your unqualified and 00:14:22.60\00:14:27.46 undivided affections. 00:14:27.46\00:14:29.10 The second commandment God says you will not make unto you any 00:14:29.10\00:14:33.40 graven image or any likeness of anything that is in the heaven 00:14:33.40\00:14:35.20 above the earth beneath the waters of the earth. 00:14:35.20\00:14:36.33 You will not bow down yourself to them or serve them. 00:14:36.33\00:14:37.96 So that raises the question with what do we make and with what do 00:14:37.96\00:14:41.36 we bow? 00:14:41.36\00:14:43.13 And the answer is the body. 00:14:43.13\00:14:45.13 God says that's an illegitimate use of your body. 00:14:45.13\00:14:48.33 I gave you the skill, I gave you those hands, I gave you that 00:14:48.33\00:14:51.36 body, that's an illegitimate use. 00:14:51.36\00:14:53.43 You will not use it for that. 00:14:53.43\00:14:54.73 Third commandment is you will not take my name in vain, well 00:14:54.73\00:14:58.60 with what would we take God's name in vain? 00:14:58.60\00:15:01.60 Our words, our mouths and so God says I need your words. 00:15:01.60\00:15:03.53 Your words should be directed toward me and toward others, 00:15:03.53\00:15:06.00 love the Lord your God with all your heart, your neighbors, 00:15:06.00\00:15:08.53 yourself. 00:15:08.53\00:15:09.50 The fourth commandment, remember the Sabbath. 00:15:09.50\00:15:11.13 God here says memorial of creation, seventh day I rested, 00:15:11.13\00:15:15.30 memorial of redemption, I delivered you. 00:15:15.30\00:15:17.66 What is He after here? 00:15:17.66\00:15:18.86 What is the Sabbath about? 00:15:18.86\00:15:19.83 Time. 00:15:19.83\00:15:21.06 So if you just look at those commandment number one I want 00:15:21.06\00:15:23.60 your affections, commandment number two, I want your body, 00:15:23.60\00:15:25.46 commandment number three I want your words, your mouth, 00:15:25.46\00:15:28.23 commandment number four I want your time. 00:15:28.23\00:15:30.20 That is the stuff of which relationships are made. 00:15:30.20\00:15:33.63 >>Yeah totally. 00:15:33.63\00:15:34.63 >>You have a spouse. 00:15:34.63\00:15:35.40 You have a spouse. 00:15:35.40\00:15:36.20 You have a spouse. 00:15:36.20\00:15:36.80 I have a spouse. 00:15:36.80\00:15:38.03 All of us are married and if you start slacking on any one of 00:15:38.03\00:15:39.26 those with your spouse she doesn't have your affections, 00:15:39.26\00:15:41.30 she doesn't have your body, your physical presence, she doesn't 00:15:41.30\00:15:44.36 have your words of affirmation and she doesn't have your time 00:15:44.36\00:15:46.76 you're having relational breakdown. 00:15:46.76\00:15:50.20 >>mhmm 00:15:50.20\00:15:51.23 >>Yeah. 00:15:51.23\00:15:52.50 >>So we so often shallowly and incorrectly read the law as if 00:15:52.50\00:15:54.73 its this stern don't, don't, don't don't, don't, I'm a 00:15:54.73\00:15:59.10 dictator and I'm in heaven and I---no God is saying I want you. 00:15:59.10\00:16:02.33 >>Yeah, yeah. 00:16:02.33\00:16:04.13 >>I want you. 00:16:04.13\00:16:05.76 >>Give me your heart. 00:16:05.76\00:16:06.46 >>I want you. 00:16:06.46\00:16:07.73 >>Give me your heart, enter into relationship with me, covenant 00:16:07.73\00:16:09.23 relationship with me and I promise you you will have no 00:16:09.23\00:16:13.50 other God's before me. 00:16:13.50\00:16:14.86 I promise you you will not commit adultery. 00:16:14.86\00:16:17.03 I promise you you will not murder, you will not steal. 00:16:17.03\00:16:20.80 You will not do those kinds of things when you're in proper 00:16:20.80\00:16:22.73 relationship with me. 00:16:22.73\00:16:25.53 >>to me. 00:16:25.53\00:16:27.03 >>And the impact of that takes on the social dynamic and we 00:16:27.03\00:16:30.83 were talking about, earlier that our relationship with God will 00:16:30.83\00:16:34.56 affect relationship with others. 00:16:34.56\00:16:36.43 You just highlighted the first four which everything you said 00:16:36.43\00:16:40.40 had to do with relationship with God. 00:16:40.40\00:16:42.50 And the way that the commandments are--are structured 00:16:42.50\00:16:45.56 is that it begins by emphasizing how we related, think and feel 00:16:45.56\00:16:50.70 about God and then it immediately transitions to what? 00:16:50.70\00:16:54.23 >>How we relate to others. 00:16:54.23\00:16:55.60 >>Yeah. 00:16:55.60\00:16:56.43 >> How we relate to other people. 00:16:56.43\00:16:57.33 >>Vertical, horizontal. 00:16:57.33\00:16:58.56 >>Exactly--that goes exactly with Jesus summary of the Ten 00:16:58.56\00:17:00.70 Commandments. 00:17:00.70\00:17:03.73 He said you can summarize it in two commandments. 00:17:03.73\00:17:05.93 Number one, love God with all of your heart, soul, mind and 00:17:05.93\00:17:08.50 strength. 00:17:08.50\00:17:09.66 Commandment number two, love your neighbor as yourself. 00:17:09.66\00:17:11.36 >>Matthew 22 00:17:11.36\00:17:12.36 >>And so you see it right here. 00:17:12.36\00:17:13.76 This is exactly what Jesus was speaking about that the thing is 00:17:13.76\00:17:15.96 structured this way. 00:17:15.96\00:17:18.66 IT affects everything so God's covenant is holistic. 00:17:18.66\00:17:21.23 >>Listen to this in Exodus 34 verse 28 so he was there with 00:17:21.23\00:17:25.86 the Lord, speaking of Moses, 34:28--40 days and 40 nights he 00:17:25.86\00:17:30.50 neither ate bread nor drank water and he wrote on the 00:17:30.50\00:17:34.00 tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. 00:17:34.00\00:17:36.10 So we're tracing the thread of covenant through. 00:17:36.10\00:17:40.93 We talked about covenant with Adam, covenant with Abram, 00:17:40.93\00:17:42.56 covenant with Abraham after his name was changed, covenant with 00:17:42.56\00:17:45.06 the children of Abraham, and then the children of Israel. 00:17:45.06\00:17:47.86 Then now he says these tablets, this is the contract--we talked 00:17:47.86\00:17:52.43 earlier about how a covenant was a contract--it was a vow--it was 00:17:52.43\00:17:55.20 a promise. 00:17:55.20\00:17:56.20 God says this is the tablets of relationship. 00:17:56.20\00:18:00.83 >>Yeah. 00:18:00.83\00:18:01.83 >>This is the tablet of covenant, of connection. 00:18:01.83\00:18:04.43 >>Yeah. 00:18:04.43\00:18:05.66 >>you guys we need to take a break and we'll come back and 00:18:05.66\00:18:08.53 continue this discussion--what we're...what we're going to see 00:18:08.53\00:18:12.43 right now is the publishing process of Light Bearers 00:18:12.43\00:18:16.26 Ministry, the ministry that we're all associated with and 00:18:16.26\00:18:18.56 literally millions upon millions of publications are being sent 00:18:18.56\00:18:23.60 out all around the world. 00:18:23.60\00:18:26.56 >>Amen. 00:18:26.56\00:18:27.73 >>For the express purpose of establishing relationship 00:18:27.73\00:18:32.43 between human beings and God. 00:18:32.43\00:18:34.60 >>They're published in this very building that we're sitting in 00:18:34.60\00:18:38.16 right now. 00:18:38.16\00:18:38.73 >>That's right. 00:18:38.73\00:18:39.40 So let's just take a break. 00:18:39.40\00:18:39.93 We'll be right back. 00:18:39.93\00:18:40.33 [Music] 00:18:40.33\00:18:50.63 Light Bearers Ministry is primarily all about publishing 00:18:50.63\00:18:52.86 so let's just take a tour of our 15,000 square foot publishing 00:18:52.86\00:18:56.30 facility. 00:18:56.30\00:18:57.66 We're able to produce multiplied millions of publications in 32 00:18:57.66\00:19:01.96 different languages that go all over the world. 00:19:01.96\00:19:04.20 The great thing about this press is that it is completely 00:19:04.20\00:19:09.03 computerized. 00:19:09.03\00:19:10.46 The press is able to print on both sides of the paper in one 00:19:10.46\00:19:13.56 pass through the press roll after roll after roll all day 00:19:13.56\00:19:18.36 long. 00:19:18.36\00:19:19.63 Once the material is printed, folded, boxed and palatalized. 00:19:19.63\00:19:24.26 It goes into this large storage unit that's like a big drawer 00:19:24.26\00:19:28.16 system. 00:19:28.16\00:19:33.63 This is where it gets really exciting because once the 00:19:33.63\00:19:36.06 material is completely prepared we load this stuff up into 00:19:36.06\00:19:39.33 semi-loads that hold between 2 and 3 million publications. 00:19:39.33\00:19:44.63 And that material goes out to Seattle where it's loaded onto a 00:19:44.63\00:19:48.93 barge and then taken somewhere in the world. 00:19:48.93\00:19:51.36 [Music] 00:19:51.36\00:19:59.46 That stuff lands and these people are overwhelmed to have 00:19:59.46\00:20:03.10 reading material in their own mother tongue. 00:20:03.10\00:20:07.43 That's when people's hearts really begin to get touched as 00:20:07.43\00:20:10.03 they encounter the gospel of Christ and God's incredible love 00:20:10.03\00:20:12.70 for them, many of them for the first time in their lives. 00:20:12.70\00:20:16.06 Paper is powerful. 00:20:16.06\00:20:18.00 Paper is something that we see utilized in a way that goes 00:20:18.00\00:20:21.73 beyond anything that is in the world today. 00:20:21.73\00:20:24.70 It has a power that no other medium in the world has because 00:20:24.70\00:20:27.50 it has an ongoing life. 00:20:27.50\00:20:30.20 One person in the home reads that piece of literature and 00:20:30.20\00:20:35.20 then they can give it to someone else and they can read it and 00:20:35.20\00:20:37.80 share it and then they can give it to somebody else. 00:20:37.80\00:20:39.90 >>Next time you go two people instead of one. 00:20:39.90\00:20:42.83 >>It's actually passed on even from one family member to 00:20:42.83\00:20:45.96 another to read. 00:20:45.96\00:20:47.03 >>And next time you got three instead of two. 00:20:47.03\00:20:48.93 >>Unlike radio television that comes and then is gone, that 00:20:48.93\00:20:52.96 tract is a permanent possession of that individual. 00:20:52.96\00:20:55.63 And so you see one piece of literature after another, nickle 00:20:55.63\00:21:01.00 of less going to these individuals and being used over 00:21:01.00\00:21:03.16 and over again reaching one heart after another after 00:21:03.16\00:21:05.50 another. 00:21:05.50\00:21:06.76 >>To partner with Light Bearers in spreading the gospel visit us 00:21:06.76\00:21:15.63 online at lightbearers.org or call us toll free at 00:21:15.63\00:21:19.26 this very location from where we are 00:21:32.60\00:21:36.90 sitting on this cement millions of pieces of literature are 00:21:36.90\00:21:41.16 going all over the world. 00:21:41.16\00:21:44.30 >>Praise God. 00:21:44.30\00:21:45.53 >>And bringing people back, drawing people back, inviting 00:21:45.53\00:21:48.23 people back into that covenant relationship that God has. 00:21:48.23\00:21:50.90 >>Amen. 00:21:50.90\00:21:51.86 Amen. 00:21:51.86\00:21:53.13 >>That we're talking about right now--that God wants us to enter 00:21:53.13\00:21:54.60 into--that God longs for us to enter into. 00:21:54.60\00:21:56.26 >>From hundreds of years past all the way through the days, 00:21:56.26\00:22:02.20 the birth, the life of Christ and to this very time, this very 00:22:02.20\00:22:04.63 year. 00:22:04.63\00:22:05.70 >>Well we were just before..before the break in 00:22:05.70\00:22:09.13 Exodus chapter 20 and as God is establishing or re-establishing 00:22:09.13\00:22:13.23 relationship with his people after they're coming out of 00:22:13.23\00:22:16.66 Egyptian bondage--after giving the Ten Commandments at Mount 00:22:16.66\00:22:21.80 Sinai as..as God's covenant then immediately the book, of Exodus 00:22:21.80\00:22:27.93 continues to unfold with God stating what his overall purpose 00:22:27.93\00:22:33.73 is--what his overall goal is and its articulated really well I 00:22:33.73\00:22:38.40 think in Exodus 25 verse 8 where God now has given the Ten 00:22:38.40\00:22:42.30 Commandments and now he says to Moses for the people and let 00:22:42.30\00:22:46.26 them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them. 00:22:46.26\00:22:51.23 So God is...God is expressing His desire for coming into 00:22:51.23\00:22:54.93 relationship with his people here. 00:22:54.93\00:22:58.60 There is a temple to be built for the specific purpose of God 00:22:58.60\00:23:02.06 dwelling among his people. 00:23:02.06\00:23:04.50 >>Yeah. 00:23:04.50\00:23:05.80 The...the...the picture here is exactly the picture that we see 00:23:05.80\00:23:09.83 in Eden. 00:23:09.83\00:23:11.23 Adam and Eve are fleeing, they're hiding, they're covering 00:23:11.23\00:23:13.16 and God is coming down to be with them. 00:23:13.16\00:23:15.83 Here God is saying I want to be with them--that's the story of 00:23:15.83\00:23:19.83 scripture--we actual spent time on that way back I think maybe 00:23:19.83\00:23:22.76 our second or third conversation where we went to Revelation 21 00:23:22.76\00:23:28.96 there Revelation 22 where John is just enraptured with this 00:23:28.96\00:23:33.00 idea. 00:23:33.00\00:23:34.23 He says and God will be with them and they will be with him 00:23:34.23\00:23:36.06 and the Tabernacle of God is with men...with, with, with. 00:23:36.06\00:23:38.53 Jesus himself is Emanuel, God with us. 00:23:38.53\00:23:40.96 >>Yeah. 00:23:40.96\00:23:42.23 >>So here is a seeing through a glass, not even so darkly, but a 00:23:42.23\00:23:47.06 picture, somewhat veiled because it's not yet Christ in the Flesh 00:23:47.06\00:23:51.76 but it's God's desire to be with--to be proximate--to be 00:23:51.76\00:23:55.96 amongst his people. 00:23:55.96\00:23:57.53 >>This with language--this idea of relationship continues in 00:23:57.53\00:24:01.30 Exodus 25 because after verse 8 says let them make me a 00:24:01.30\00:24:04.83 sanctuary that I may dwell among them--then it immediately goes 00:24:04.83\00:24:09.06 into a description of how it's to be built and the most Holy 00:24:09.06\00:24:12.80 place is described and they're given specific instructions for 00:24:12.80\00:24:16.23 building the ark of the covenant...the ark of the 00:24:16.23\00:24:19.06 testimony with the two cherubim verse 18 and the two cherubim 00:24:19.06\00:24:22.86 are---are---are positioned on the mercy seat--that gold lid 00:24:22.86\00:24:25.93 that was on top of the box which was the ark ofú the covenant. 00:24:25.93\00:24:29.50 And then skip down you guys to verse 22 and God says here and 00:24:29.50\00:24:32.96 their I will meet with you. 00:24:32.96\00:24:35.23 >>Yep. 00:24:35.23\00:24:37.13 >>And I will speak with you from above the mercy seat from 00:24:37.13\00:24:39.66 between the two cherubim. 00:24:39.66\00:24:42.56 So here's this language again where God is basically saying to 00:24:42.56\00:24:46.30 the people. 00:24:46.30\00:24:47.50 I want a relationship with you...I want to communicate with 00:24:47.50\00:24:50.40 you. 00:24:50.40\00:24:51.66 And so I'm going to meet with you and speak with you from this 00:24:51.66\00:24:54.96 position. 00:24:54.96\00:24:56.10 >>The sanctuary is often called in the Old Testament the 00:24:56.10\00:24:59.36 tabernacle of meeting. 00:24:59.36\00:25:01.16 The place of meeting--the place of communion but--not but...and 00:25:01.16\00:25:05.96 the various ceremonies and priests and priesthood and..and 00:25:05.96\00:25:12.63 furniture and accoutrements. 00:25:12.63\00:25:14.76 I mean let's be honest the sanctuaryís really complex. 00:25:14.76\00:25:16.93 I mean at one level its really simple. 00:25:16.93\00:25:19.46 I want to be with my people. 00:25:19.46\00:25:21.30 At another level you start getting into the details--you 00:25:21.30\00:25:23.90 read through the book of Leviticus--measurements and the 00:25:23.90\00:25:26.26 various offerings--oh no this one's done like this, this and 00:25:26.26\00:25:31.13 this. 00:25:31.13\00:25:32.23 Well this one's a little different it's like this and 00:25:32.23\00:25:33.53 this. 00:25:33.53\00:25:34.23 There is a complexity there. 00:25:34.23\00:25:35.96 My take of the complexity--I'd be super intereted to see your 00:25:35.96\00:25:38.43 guys take on this is always that God is a real God. 00:25:38.43\00:25:43.80 He is an actual God who is holy who's majestic, whose powerful, 00:25:43.80\00:25:47.63 whose awesome. 00:25:47.63\00:25:48.83 And he's a holy God and because we are sinners and we have 00:25:48.83\00:25:52.56 fallen short of God's glory we can't just go walking into his 00:25:52.56\00:25:55.33 presence and the same time I might just walk into Ty's house 00:25:55.33\00:25:58.46 or walk into Jeffrey's house--God says the means by 00:25:58.46\00:26:01.26 which you approach me are these. 00:26:01.26\00:26:02.86 But even here it's not just some arbitrary thing, every article 00:26:02.86\00:26:06.96 of furniture, every sacrifice, every measurement, every detail 00:26:06.96\00:26:10.66 of the sanctuary points in some specificity to Christ. 00:26:10.66\00:26:14.76 >>One thing that's helped. 00:26:14.76\00:26:16.06 >>You come to me through Jesus. 00:26:16.06\00:26:17.33 >>Yeah. 00:26:17.33\00:26:19.26 Sorry about that David. 00:26:19.26\00:26:20.20 >>No go ahead. 00:26:20.20\00:26:21.43 >>One thing that's helped me because you said it is complex 00:26:21.43\00:26:23.33 and there's so many details and there's furniture and there's 00:26:23.33\00:26:25.73 just all kinds of stuff. 00:26:25.73\00:26:27.60 But the book of Exodus maps out the sanctuary in a very, very 00:26:27.60\00:26:32.96 simple way. 00:26:32.96\00:26:35.00 I don't know if you guys can see this but let me...let me go 00:26:35.00\00:26:38.00 back---This thing is all upside down and turned inside out. 00:26:38.00\00:26:43.13 OK so basically this is a topical view. 00:26:43.13\00:26:46.16 >>How topical view. 00:26:46.16\00:26:47.90 >>Helicopter view, and aerial view of the sanctuary, kind of 00:26:47.90\00:26:50.80 like a floor plan of the sanctuary. 00:26:50.80\00:26:52.66 And what we have going on here is that, that God said make me a 00:26:52.66\00:26:59.20 sanctuary that I may dwell among them. 00:26:59.20\00:27:01.06 The children of Israel are camped out around the sanctuary 00:27:01.06\00:27:05.16 and then there's one gate of entrance here and the first. 00:27:05.16\00:27:09.13 >>That's an important point. 00:27:09.13\00:27:11.06 >>Yeah there's one door. 00:27:11.06\00:27:13.66 >>There's one way in. 00:27:13.66\00:27:15.96 >>That's right. 00:27:15.96\00:27:17.36 That's reminiscent of course, well not reminiscent going 00:27:17.36\00:27:19.70 forward Jesus chapter 10 00:27:19.70\00:27:21.20 >>If foreshadows 00:27:21.20\00:27:22.46 >>Says I'm the door--you gotta enter in through me. 00:27:22.46\00:27:24.06 Well this one place that you can enter--the sinner comes in here 00:27:24.06\00:27:26.46 with his sacrifice--with the lamb that he's bringing for 00:27:26.46\00:27:29.33 sacrifice and the first article of furniture is the--the alter 00:27:29.33\00:27:33.90 of brass--ant that's where the sacrifices were made, then you 00:27:33.90\00:27:37.73 have this pool called the lavor of washing. 00:27:37.73\00:27:41.46 >Like a basin. 00:27:41.46\00:27:42.66 >>Yes and the Priest would interact with theú sinner here 00:27:42.66\00:27:45.73 as confession was made and then the animal sacrifice would be 00:27:45.73\00:27:48.90 slain. 00:27:48.90\00:27:50.16 And the blood, some of the blood of the animal sacrifice would be 00:27:50.16\00:27:53.16 caught in a bowl and then the Priest would continue by moving 00:27:53.16\00:27:55.96 into what was called the holy place, the first apartment or 00:27:55.96\00:27:59.90 room. 00:27:59.90\00:28:01.23 >>this is actually a building, we should say that we're looking 00:28:01.23\00:28:03.16 down here but this outer perimeter here is a courtyard. 00:28:03.16\00:28:05.96 It's like an open-- It's like a yard, part of your house but 00:28:05.96\00:28:08.93 with a fence around it. 00:28:08.93\00:28:10.56 >>It's a white fence. 00:28:10.56\00:28:11.76 >>A white---but this is a building--this is a building. 00:28:11.76\00:28:13.60 >>And there's a roof over it. 00:28:13.60\00:28:15.63 We've kind of removed the roof and we're looking down in. 00:28:15.63\00:28:18.33 And that holy place had three articles of furniture. 00:28:18.33\00:28:24.03 Here on the north side was the table of show bread and over 00:28:24.03\00:28:27.10 here was the candlestick--the seven branch candlestick. 00:28:27.10\00:28:31.50 And here, right before this second veil, was the 00:28:31.50\00:28:34.80 >>Alter of incense. 00:28:34.80\00:28:37.53 >>Alter of incense. 00:28:37.53\00:28:38.96 And what we were just talking about is the fact that the way 00:28:38.96\00:28:40.56 the whole thing was structured is that there was a second 00:28:40.56\00:28:42.43 apartment. 00:28:42.43\00:28:43.26 There was a most holy place. 00:28:43.26\00:28:45.03 It was in the shape of a perfect cube and there was that one 00:28:45.03\00:28:48.63 article of furniture called the ark. 00:28:48.63\00:28:51.00 The ark of the covenant. 00:28:51.00\00:28:53.06 >>Which is the thing you were just talking about. 00:28:53.06\00:28:54.70 >>Yeah. 00:28:54.70\00:28:55.63 >>With the two cherubim, the mercy seat. 00:28:55.63\00:28:56.86 >>Yeah and that's the place where God said that's where I'll 00:28:56.86\00:28:59.13 meet with you and speak to you from between the two cherubim, 00:28:59.13\00:29:03.23 above the mercy seat. 00:29:03.23\00:29:04.70 That's where I'll be and we sometimes refer to this, 00:29:04.70\00:29:08.83 although this language is not in scripture as the Shekinah 00:29:08.83\00:29:11.40 glory--that is the visible, radiant, glory of God was there, 00:29:11.40\00:29:16.50 between the cherubim and the Priest would interact with God 00:29:16.50\00:29:20.83 here and it's just a beautiful, kind of sand box illustration of 00:29:20.83\00:29:25.23 the entire plan of salvation. 00:29:25.23\00:29:27.50 How God implements covenant with his people. 00:29:27.50\00:29:30.06 >>And just to give the quickest illustration of how some of this 00:29:30.06\00:29:34.46 complexity--and this, again, just a sand box illustration. 00:29:34.46\00:29:36.66 >>And not a good one at that. 00:29:36.66\00:29:38.73 >>It's not bad 00:29:38.73\00:29:39.83 >>Because I'm drawing upside down. 00:29:39.83\00:29:40.76 >>Actually quite good. 00:29:40.76\00:29:42.03 It all points to Jesus so for example, very quickly, the lamb 00:29:42.03\00:29:43.73 was slain at the alter, that reminds of Jesus. 00:29:43.73\00:29:45.56 Jesus is the one who washes us at the lavor. 00:29:45.56\00:29:47.83 Jesus is the bread of life, that reminds us of Christ. 00:29:47.83\00:29:50.56 Jesus is the one that gives his spirit, and the spirit was the 00:29:50.56\00:29:54.13 oil that's kept the candlestick burning. 00:29:54.13\00:29:57.06 Jesus' righteousness is the incense of the, you know, the 00:29:57.06\00:30:01.70 prayers. 00:30:01.70\00:30:02.73 We then pass through the veil. 00:30:02.73\00:30:04.83 And Jesus himself is actually called, his flesh is like the 00:30:04.83\00:30:08.70 veil--it says in the book of Hebrews, then we come into the 00:30:08.70\00:30:11.26 most holy place. 00:30:11.26\00:30:12.53 Jesus is actually in there, then you have Jesus' covenant, you 00:30:12.53\00:30:15.30 have the mercy seat, which is Jesus' throne. 00:30:15.30\00:30:17.03 So the whole thing. 00:30:17.03\00:30:18.43 >>And the Ten Commandments. 00:30:18.43\00:30:19.70 >>The Ten Commandments of course are the very transcript of the 00:30:19.70\00:30:22.26 loving character of God. 00:30:22.26\00:30:24.00 So the whole thing, and again, this is a simple illustration--a 00:30:24.00\00:30:26.70 good one though. 00:30:26.70\00:30:30.56 Just points to the fact--the whole thing is pointing towards 00:30:30.56\00:30:33.20 him who--we're gonna discover in just a little bit. 00:30:33.20\00:30:35.60 Him who is the covenant. 00:30:35.60\00:30:37.40 >>yeah that's right...that's right. 00:30:37.40\00:30:38.86 >>Him....so...so God is saying, not only on the tablets of 00:30:38.86\00:30:40.96 stone....on the tablets of covenant he's also---you could 00:30:40.96\00:30:43.16 call this the house of the covenant--the house of the 00:30:43.16\00:30:45.23 relationship--the house of---we'll meet here. 00:30:45.23\00:30:47.43 >>Yeah, yeah. 00:30:47.43\00:30:48.56 >>Well beyond even the furniture---what went on there? 00:30:48.56\00:30:52.36 Yeah, what went on in this sanctuary? 00:30:52.36\00:30:55.43 There's different participants in this whole...this whole 00:30:55.43\00:30:59.00 illustration that God gave and you have the lamb. 00:30:59.00\00:31:02.16 And the bible talks about the lamb that's brought. 00:31:02.16\00:31:04.70 And I don't know ho...I don't know how much detail weú want to 00:31:04.70\00:31:07.86 get into that in this discussion but this lamb that's brought is 00:31:07.86\00:31:10.80 somehow going to illustrate to humanity in a tangible way what 00:31:10.80\00:31:15.23 God is up to and what he--to what lengths he will go to in 00:31:15.23\00:31:21.63 his covenant. 00:31:21.63\00:31:22.73 Isn't that the purpose of the lamb? 00:31:22.73\00:31:24.76 >>Oh yeah, yeah. 00:31:24.76\00:31:26.06 Of course. 00:31:26.06\00:31:27.33 >> And that somehow is going to reinforce in their minds, whoa. 00:31:27.33\00:31:29.70 Going back to what you said about Abraham and the animal and 00:31:29.70\00:31:32.83 God's the one who walks through. 00:31:32.83\00:31:34.60 >>That's right. 00:31:34.60\00:31:35.86 >>And...and...OK so now we are starting to get into a little 00:31:35.86\00:31:37.93 bit of the complexity but I think it's alright. 00:31:37.93\00:31:39.96 Because you have not only the furniture, not only the various 00:31:39.96\00:31:42.33 sacrifices of which the lamb was one. 00:31:42.33\00:31:45.20 But then the whole sanctuary system is based on a collendric 00:31:45.20\00:31:47.66 system. 00:31:47.66\00:31:49.06 There's a calendar--you'll keep these three feasts in the Spring 00:31:49.06\00:31:51.86 and these three feasts in the Fall and each of those feasts in 00:31:51.86\00:31:55.60 their own little unique details point in some element to a 00:31:55.60\00:32:01.13 dimension of Christ's ministry. 00:32:01.13\00:32:04.40 So for example, one of the feasts was called Yom Kipper or 00:32:04.40\00:32:08.13 the Day of Atonement...the Day of Atonement--one of the feasts 00:32:08.13\00:32:12.76 was carried on out on the tenth day of the seventh month and on 00:32:12.76\00:32:15.76 that day just listen to the language--the Day of Atonement. 00:32:15.76\00:32:19.43 You divide that up it's the day of at atonement. 00:32:19.43\00:32:22.60 And that's the point. 00:32:22.60\00:32:25.86 That's the point. 00:32:25.86\00:32:28.63 God longs for the rebellion in the human heart, the iniquity in 00:32:28.63\00:32:30.33 the human heart, the selfishness in the human heart to finally 00:32:30.33\00:32:32.40 and fully be eradicated so that he can be at one with his---the 00:32:32.40\00:32:35.36 whole thing sometimes and I think even in modern times our 00:32:35.36\00:32:40.03 Jewish friends have done this very thing---we think that the 00:32:40.03\00:32:44.10 complexity is the point--the furniture is the point--the 00:32:44.10\00:32:47.00 festival is the point. 00:32:47.00\00:32:48.96 That's not the point. 00:32:48.96\00:32:50.30 The point is God. 00:32:50.30\00:32:51.30 This is how we have a relationship with God. 00:32:51.30\00:32:54.10 This is how we come into communion and union and covenant 00:32:54.10\00:32:56.33 with him. 00:32:56.33\00:32:57.43 >>So the synonyms for the word one. 00:32:57.43\00:32:58.76 >>yeah. 00:32:58.76\00:32:59.76 >>Synonyms---Community, harmony, relationship. 00:32:59.76\00:33:01.66 So it's the day of relationship. 00:33:01.66\00:33:06.73 >>Yeah its the feast of tabernacles. 00:33:06.73\00:33:07.93 I want to tabernacle with you. 00:33:07.93\00:33:09.33 Its the feast of Passover. 00:33:09.33\00:33:10.16 I want to pass over your sins. 00:33:10.16\00:33:11.46 I want to pass over those iniquities through the blood of 00:33:11.46\00:33:14.96 the Lamb. 00:33:14.96\00:33:15.70 All of these. 00:33:15.70\00:33:16.70 >>The first fruits, yeah--right down the list. 00:33:16.70\00:33:18.06 >>The whole sanctuary service is pointed to Jesus. 00:33:18.06\00:33:21.00 And when you get to the New Testament you're looking at the 00:33:21.00\00:33:23.80 bottom line foundation at relationship with Christ. 00:33:23.80\00:33:25.83 I'm the way the truth and the life. 00:33:25.83\00:33:27.10 But in the Old Testament Psalm 77 verse 13 says thy way oh God 00:33:27.10\00:33:32.06 is in the sanctuary. 00:33:32.06\00:33:34.33 >>Yeah that's so cool James because here's the thing. 00:33:34.33\00:33:37.03 Back to this illustration--this poor upside down illustration. 00:33:37.03\00:33:40.56 But I think you guys can see that clearly. 00:33:40.56\00:33:42.80 >>Totally. 00:33:42.80\00:33:43.83 >>What James is quoting here--this is powerful. 00:33:43.83\00:33:45.80 I'll just...I'll just--let me see here different color--what's 00:33:45.80\00:33:49.86 happening here is Jesus says I'm the way---He's the language way 00:33:49.86\00:33:56.50 which means path--journey. 00:33:56.50\00:33:57.93 And Psalm 77 verse 13 says God's way is in the sanctuary. 00:33:57.93\00:34:03.83 The sanctuary illustrates a way--a path--a journey. 00:34:03.83\00:34:07.30 And that journey is basically a process of returning. 00:34:07.30\00:34:13.63 >>That's right. 00:34:13.63\00:34:14.73 >>To relationship with God. 00:34:14.73\00:34:15.80 >>That's right. 00:34:15.80\00:34:17.06 >>And it's consummated in the symbolism related to the most 00:34:17.06\00:34:19.33 holy place--the Day of Atonement--the day of unity--the 00:34:19.33\00:34:25.56 day where there is complete reestablishment of relationship 00:34:25.56\00:34:27.83 with God with no veil between. 00:34:27.83\00:34:29.03 >>Yes. 00:34:29.03\00:34:30.03 >>We've moved through a series of veils here. 00:34:30.03\00:34:31.43 And the most holy place--we have to remember where we came from. 00:34:31.43\00:34:34.73 The most holy place that's where the Ten Commandments is in the 00:34:34.73\00:34:37.36 Ark of the Covenant. 00:34:37.36\00:34:39.33 And that Ten Commandment law of God represents in some 00:34:39.33\00:34:44.36 magnificence sense what a human being looks like when they are 00:34:44.36\00:34:50.60 completely re-established in relationship with God. 00:34:50.60\00:34:54.93 Love to God is re-established--love to our 00:34:54.93\00:34:58.53 fellow human beings is re-established. 00:34:58.53\00:35:02.80 God's love manifested in that law--in a codeified form is 00:35:02.80\00:35:05.46 completely re-established. 00:35:05.46\00:35:07.36 God's law is written in the heart and in the mind. 00:35:07.36\00:35:09.90 The new covenant is fulfilled in that relationship that 00:35:09.90\00:35:16.30 consummates with the law of God being perfectly re-established 00:35:16.30\00:35:19.36 inside of us. 00:35:19.36\00:35:20.46 >>Our hearts become the stones that was written on. 00:35:20.46\00:35:22.46 >>Yeah. 00:35:22.46\00:35:23.73 >>And in Exodus, you know as you go through the establishment of 00:35:23.73\00:35:26.83 the sanctuary and the different perimeters and the different 00:35:26.83\00:35:30.00 measurements and the different pieces of furniture etc. you get 00:35:30.00\00:35:33.03 to the very end and just as you get to the end of all the 00:35:33.03\00:35:35.60 description that God give to Moses to give to the 00:35:35.60\00:35:38.20 people---just as you prepared to anoint the sanctuary for service 00:35:38.20\00:35:42.23 and inaugurate it--just there in the last chapters--chapter 00:35:42.23\00:35:46.43 29--you come to the summary and its really how we entered into 00:35:46.43\00:35:52.83 this whole understanding. 00:35:52.83\00:35:55.50 God introduced it this way and then he closes out this way. 00:35:55.50\00:35:58.00 He says verse 44 of Exodus chapter 29 I will sanctify the 00:35:58.00\00:36:03.46 tabernacle of the congregation and the altar. 00:36:03.46\00:36:05.33 I will sanctify both, also both Aaron and his sons to minister 00:36:05.33\00:36:08.90 to me in the Priests office and I will dwell among the children 00:36:08.90\00:36:12.16 of Israel and will be their God and verse 46 they shall know 00:36:12.16\00:36:17.60 that I am the Lord their God. 00:36:17.60\00:36:19.70 That brought them forth out of the land of Egypt that I may 00:36:19.70\00:36:23.00 dwell among them. 00:36:23.00\00:36:25.26 I am the Lord their God. 00:36:25.26\00:36:27.66 >>OK I have to say this...I have to say this. 00:36:27.66\00:36:31.76 That language is replicated in John chapter 1 in the New 00:36:31.76\00:36:35.10 Testament when Jesus comes into the world--the scripture says of 00:36:35.10\00:36:39.53 him in the New Testament John 1 verse 14 it says and the word 00:36:39.53\00:36:43.66 became flesh and the English version says dwelt among us and 00:36:43.66\00:36:49.80 we beheld his glory in the Greek it literally says the word 00:36:49.80\00:36:53.26 became flesh and tabernacles among us. 00:36:53.26\00:36:56.66 And we beheld his glory which is a direct reference to the 00:36:56.66\00:37:01.33 Shekinah glory above the mercy seat between the cherubim. 00:37:01.33\00:37:06.03 Jesus is the complete fulfillment of the symbolism of 00:37:06.03\00:37:08.96 the most holy place of the sanctuary. 00:37:08.96\00:37:10.53 >>Which reminds me of something else and that it that Solomon's 00:37:10.53\00:37:12.90 temple was glorious. 00:37:12.90\00:37:13.76 It was ruined. 00:37:13.76\00:37:15.23 It was taken down and another temple was built in its place 00:37:15.23\00:37:18.33 years later. 00:37:18.33\00:37:19.60 And there were those present at the inauguration of that second 00:37:19.60\00:37:21.86 temple which was the one that Christ came to that remembered 00:37:21.86\00:37:24.76 the glory of the first temple. 00:37:24.76\00:37:26.13 They wept. 00:37:26.13\00:37:27.43 But God said I'm gonna fill the second temple with more glory. 00:37:27.43\00:37:31.33 >>he said it would exceed. 00:37:31.33\00:37:32.93 >>Yes then the first temple and that is the fulfillment of that 00:37:32.93\00:37:36.10 promise. 00:37:36.10\00:37:37.20 >>So how did he fill the temple then?...with Jesus. 00:37:37.20\00:37:38.93 Jesus came as the more glory...the more glorious 00:37:38.93\00:37:43.00 fulfillment of that promise. 00:37:43.00\00:37:47.23 >>The verse that comes to my mind on this is the verse that 00:37:47.23\00:37:50.86 we quoted earlier in another conversation in a different 00:37:50.86\00:37:53.03 context but it's so awesome--Psalm 27 verse 4 one 00:37:53.03\00:37:55.76 thing that I have desired of the Lord and that will I seek that I 00:37:55.76\00:37:59.86 may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to 00:37:59.86\00:38:03.03 behold the beauty or the glory of the Lord and to enquirer in 00:38:03.03\00:38:09.00 his temple. 00:38:09.00\00:38:10.26 So that coupled with---what did you quote earlier Psalm 77:13? 00:38:10.26\00:38:14.10 >>13 00:38:14.10\00:38:15.30 >>Thy way oh Lord is in the sanctuary and David says the 00:38:15.30\00:38:19.60 beauty of God is seen in the sanctuary--the holiness, the 00:38:19.60\00:38:22.80 goodness, the love is seen in the sanctuary. 00:38:22.80\00:38:25.40 >>Check this out David that verse you just quoted in Psalm 00:38:25.40\00:38:28.36 27 verse 4 go to Psalm 63 and look at verse 2. 00:38:28.36\00:38:33.46 Verse 2 Psalm 63 verse 2 so I have looked for you God--David 00:38:33.46\00:38:39.40 is saying I've looked for you God in your sanctuary to see 00:38:39.40\00:38:42.86 your power and your glory because your loving kindness is 00:38:42.86\00:38:47.93 better than life. 00:38:47.93\00:38:50.00 So here's what David's anticipating. 00:38:50.00\00:38:52.10 >>Yes. 00:38:52.10\00:38:53.30 >>David is saying God I'm searching--I'm looking for you 00:38:53.30\00:38:55.93 and so where am I making this investigation? 00:38:55.93\00:38:58.10 Where am I making this inquiry into the character of God? 00:38:58.10\00:39:02.60 In the sanctuary. 00:39:02.60\00:39:03.83 That's where I'm looking to behold God's glory and in that 00:39:03.83\00:39:07.90 sanctuary I encounter your glory and then he equates it with 00:39:07.90\00:39:12.63 God's love--God's loving kindness and the word is there. 00:39:12.63\00:39:17.50 >>It's hesed. 00:39:17.50\00:39:20.30 >>It's hesed. 00:39:20.30\00:39:21.06 >>Beautiful. 00:39:21.06\00:39:22.26 >>It's the Old Testament word for covenant faithfulness. 00:39:22.26\00:39:23.40 In the sanctuary I encounter the covenant faithfulness of 00:39:23.40\00:39:25.50 God--David is saying. 00:39:25.50\00:39:27.40 >>Beautiful. 00:39:27.40\00:39:28.73 >>Yeah. 00:39:28.73\00:39:29.70 >>Love it. 00:39:29.70\00:39:31.16 >>We need to take another break right now. 00:39:31.16\00:39:32.43 >>These breaks are painful at times. 00:39:32.43\00:39:33.70 >>They're painful at times but we have something really great 00:39:33.70\00:39:35.50 to share with those who are sitting in on the conversation 00:39:35.50\00:39:38.96 with us. 00:39:38.96\00:39:40.23 So we'll just take a break with that offer and we'll come right 00:39:40.23\00:39:42.70 back. 00:39:42.70\00:39:43.93 Announcer: The Light Bearers story is a short, covenant...the tablet of the 00:40:36.66\00:40:42.40 covenant and the ark of the covenant and the sanctuary which 00:40:42.40\00:40:44.36 is a covenant you would think that the rest of the Old 00:40:44.36\00:40:46.50 Testament would be just one grand story of victory after 00:40:46.50\00:40:50.13 victory and going from excellence to greater 00:40:50.13\00:40:54.16 excellence. 00:40:54.16\00:40:56.80 But rather than being a grand success story much of the Old 00:40:56.80\00:40:59.40 Testament often is a story of broken promises and...and broken 00:40:59.40\00:41:04.00 covenant---not on God's part. 00:41:04.00\00:41:05.93 God never, ever, ever, ever broke covenant with the children 00:41:05.93\00:41:10.16 of Israel. 00:41:10.16\00:41:11.40 The everlasting covenant was always faithful on God's part. 00:41:11.40\00:41:13.73 But there was an unfaithfulness on the part of those that were 00:41:13.73\00:41:17.23 responding to the covenant. 00:41:17.23\00:41:18.50 In fact we see it we don't even get away from Mount Sinai before 00:41:18.50\00:41:21.66 the covenant is already broken in an act of just tremendous 00:41:21.66\00:41:26.30 significance pregnant with symbolism. 00:41:26.30\00:41:28.00 Moses comes from down from the mountain. 00:41:28.00\00:41:30.86 The children of Israel because Moses had seemingly been delayed 00:41:30.86\00:41:33.40 are dancing around the golden calf--well known story and when 00:41:33.40\00:41:37.06 Moses sees this--this is a violation of the covenant they 00:41:37.06\00:41:40.56 had promised, repeatedly all that God has spoken we will 00:41:40.56\00:41:43.83 do...we will do...we will do. 00:41:43.83\00:41:45.90 And yet here they have violated the very terms of the covenant 00:41:45.90\00:41:48.63 that they had agreed to. 00:41:48.63\00:41:49.93 Moses throws down the tablets of stone, they smash, they shatter 00:41:49.93\00:41:54.80 into various pieces. 00:41:54.80\00:41:56.10 >>like an act . 00:41:56.10\00:41:57.20 >>As a symbol. 00:41:57.20\00:41:58.40 >>And acted. 00:41:58.40\00:41:59.66 >>The covenant's broken, if this is--it would be like taking--if 00:41:59.66\00:42:02.36 this is the contract between you and me--OK its the tearing 00:42:02.36\00:42:05.76 of--its over. 00:42:05.76\00:42:07.86 Now then God re-establishes and that's much of the history of 00:42:07.86\00:42:12.06 the Old Testament. 00:42:12.06\00:42:13.30 Let's try...let's try...let's try...let's try that...let's 00:42:13.30\00:42:16.43 try--it's just over and over again and I just want to read a 00:42:16.43\00:42:18.90 passage to that affect Jeremiah 11 and I'll just read through 00:42:18.90\00:42:22.43 this quickly but just feel the path loss of this. 00:42:22.43\00:42:24.73 This is now hundreds of years. 00:42:24.73\00:42:26.03 >>Jeremiah 11? 00:42:26.03\00:42:27.56 >>Yes Jeremiah 11 this is now hundreds of years after this 00:42:27.56\00:42:29.66 beautiful establishment of a beautiful covenant relationship 00:42:29.66\00:42:32.76 built around the sanctuary, built around the...the Ten 00:42:32.76\00:42:36.90 Commandments. 00:42:36.90\00:42:38.16 Now listen to this Jeremiah 11 beginning in verse 1 the word 00:42:38.16\00:42:40.83 that came to Jeremiah from the Lord saying hear the words of 00:42:40.83\00:42:44.90 this covenant and speak to the men of Judah and to the 00:42:44.90\00:42:47.03 inhabitants of Jerusalem and say to them thus says the Lord God 00:42:47.03\00:42:49.10 of Israel cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this 00:42:49.10\00:42:52.80 covenant which I commanded your fathers in the day that I 00:42:52.80\00:42:55.56 brought them out of the land of Egypt from the iron furnace 00:42:55.56\00:42:58.13 saying obey my voice and do according to all that I command 00:42:58.13\00:43:00.80 you and so you shall be my people and I will be your 00:43:00.80\00:43:03.83 God--there's the refrain. 00:43:03.83\00:43:05.10 verse 5 that I may establish the oath which I have sworn, which I 00:43:05.10\00:43:08.73 have promised to your fathers to give them a land flowing with 00:43:08.73\00:43:12.13 milk and honey as it is at this day. 00:43:12.13\00:43:13.70 And I answered...and I answered and said so be it oh Lord. 00:43:13.70\00:43:17.30 Then the Lord said to me proclaim in all these words in 00:43:17.30\00:43:21.00 the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem saying hear 00:43:21.00\00:43:23.63 the words of this covenant and do them for I earnestly exhorted 00:43:23.63\00:43:27.73 your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of 00:43:27.73\00:43:30.26 Egypt until this day, rising early and exhorting them saying 00:43:30.26\00:43:32.90 obey my voice. 00:43:32.90\00:43:33.96 Yet they did not obey or incline their ear to me. 00:43:33.96\00:43:37.13 But everyone followed the dictates of his evil heart. 00:43:37.13\00:43:40.30 Therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant 00:43:40.30\00:43:43.60 which I commanded them to do but which they have not done. 00:43:43.60\00:43:48.73 Then it goes on--I mean that's just the opening bit there of 00:43:48.73\00:43:52.03 Jeremiah 11. 00:43:52.03\00:43:52.93 >>you could just feel God's heartbeat. 00:43:52.93\00:43:54.06 >>Oh his heart is broken. 00:43:54.06\00:43:55.63 >>This is really interesting because you just read from 00:43:55.63\00:43:57.16 Jeremiah and Jeremiah's lamenting of the fact that the 00:43:57.16\00:44:01.50 people of God haven't been fulfilling the covenant. 00:44:01.50\00:44:04.43 But if you look at Daniel 9 in Daniel 9 we find Daniel in his 00:44:04.43\00:44:11.53 prayer--and this is a beautiful prayer--it's a long prayer but 00:44:11.53\00:44:14.46 it's a very emotional prayer and it's powerful because in verse 2 00:44:14.46\00:44:18.66 and here's the connect...here's the connect to everything you 00:44:18.66\00:44:22.90 said. 00:44:22.90\00:44:23.70 >>I'm ready. 00:44:23.70\00:44:25.63 >>In verse 2 Daniel says that he understood by the books the 00:44:25.63\00:44:29.73 number of the year specified by the word of the Lord through 00:44:29.73\00:44:33.40 Jeremiah the prophet. 00:44:33.40\00:44:34.96 So now Daniel is...is studying the very...the very words of 00:44:34.96\00:44:40.36 Jeremiah which no doubt included some of the stuff you were just 00:44:40.36\00:44:45.40 reading. 00:44:45.40\00:44:46.26 >>Of course. 00:44:46.26\00:44:47.50 >>And in his study of Jeremiah he's lamenting the fact that 00:44:47.50\00:44:49.43 they're still in the same place. 00:44:49.43\00:44:51.80 And then he goes on in this beautiful prayer... 00:44:51.80\00:44:54.06 but we're talking about the covenant. 00:44:54.06\00:44:55.50 So check this out. 00:44:55.50\00:44:56.76 When you read here....man those so much like verse 4 I pray to 00:44:56.76\00:45:01.70 the Lord my God and made confession and said Oh Lord 00:45:01.70\00:45:04.80 great and awesome God who keeps his...his covenant. 00:45:04.80\00:45:12.03 >>I'm just going to stop right there. 00:45:12.03\00:45:13.80 That's the first thing he says. 00:45:13.80\00:45:15.36 In other words in Daniel's prayer the first thing that 00:45:15.36\00:45:17.43 comes to his mind is God you're the covenant keeper. 00:45:17.43\00:45:19.90 >>That's powerful. 00:45:19.90\00:45:21.36 ..that's powerful so he mention the covenant...God's the 00:45:21.36\00:45:24.80 covenant keeper who and...and..and he has mercy with 00:45:24.80\00:45:27.80 those who loves him, with those who keep his commandments. 00:45:27.80\00:45:29.96 And then verse 5 the reality--we and aren't you glad he says we 00:45:29.96\00:45:35.83 and not God these people are a bunch of sinners. 00:45:35.83\00:45:38.96 God your church--he doesn't go pointing fingers he says we...we 00:45:38.96\00:45:44.56 he includes himself we have sinned and committed iniquity. 00:45:44.56\00:45:48.66 We have done wickedly and rebelled. 00:45:48.66\00:45:51.03 And then he says how have they rebelled? 00:45:51.03\00:45:56.93 They departed from him precepts and from his judgments neither 00:45:56.93\00:46:02.00 have we heeded your servants the prophets. 00:46:02.00\00:46:05.23 And this is leading to the point I'm about to make here who spoke 00:46:05.23\00:46:08.06 in your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers and our 00:46:08.06\00:46:11.00 land. 00:46:11.00\00:46:12.80 And so the point here is that I think a fair summary the Old 00:46:12.80\00:46:16.40 Testament is as you were saying prophet after prophet after 00:46:16.40\00:46:20.43 prophet after prophet being sent to God's people to woo them into 00:46:20.43\00:46:25.20 covenant faithfulness with God. 00:46:25.20\00:46:28.33 And so in summary you can say in Exodus is God trying to get his 00:46:28.33\00:46:33.00 people out of Egypt and the rest of the story is him trying to 00:46:33.00\00:46:37.83 get Egypt out of his people. 00:46:37.83\00:46:39.16 Jeffrey check this out. 00:46:39.16\00:46:42.26 [Laughter] 00:46:42.26\00:46:42.86 >>Yeah that's good. 00:46:43.56\00:46:44.33 That's good. 00:46:44.33\00:46:45.36 >>Amen I love that. 00:46:45.36\00:46:46.53 >>He wasn't always....they weren't always wooing those 00:46:46.53\00:46:49.26 prophets 00:46:49.26\00:46:49.90 >>No. 00:46:49.90\00:46:50.83 >>I mean there were....'cause sometimes. 00:46:50.83\00:46:51.90 >>And he had to---and they were killed obviously. 00:46:51.90\00:46:53.60 >>Yeah. 00:46:53.60\00:46:54.60 >>Sometimes they had some very strong language. 00:46:54.60\00:46:55.53 Go ahead Ty. 00:46:55.53\00:46:56.30 >>Jeffrey--Daniel chapter 9. 00:46:56.30\00:46:58.33 >>Yes of course. 00:46:58.33\00:47:00.53 >>Daniel chapter 9 brother. 00:47:00.53\00:47:01.50 >>Of course. 00:47:01.50\00:47:02.66 >>So you've got all this language early on in the chapter 00:47:02.66\00:47:05.03 about the fact that God is faithful to the covenant but the 00:47:05.03\00:47:08.80 people--the word is used in verse 7--are unfaithful. 00:47:08.80\00:47:12.16 Alright, then there's this remarkable prophecy. 00:47:12.16\00:47:16.06 This is the premier Old Testament, Messianic prophecy in 00:47:16.06\00:47:21.96 which the coming of the faithful one. 00:47:21.96\00:47:25.63 >>That's right. 00:47:25.63\00:47:26.76 >>Is foretold. 00:47:26.76\00:47:28.50 You come down to verse 24-70 weeks are determined for your 00:47:28.50\00:47:31.93 people and for your holy city and then there's a list of 00:47:31.93\00:47:36.73 things. 00:47:36.73\00:47:37.96 Notice this to finish the transgression, to make an end of 00:47:37.96\00:47:43.03 sins, to make reconciliation for the people, to make 00:47:43.03\00:47:44.83 reconciliation, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to 00:47:44.83\00:47:48.16 seal up the vision of the prophecy, and to anoint the most 00:47:48.16\00:47:51.33 holy. 00:47:51.33\00:47:52.73 T His is so amazing. 00:47:52.73\00:47:54.80 >>Six things. 00:47:54.80\00:47:55.80 >>Yeah. 00:47:55.80\00:47:56.90 Yeah so then notice this the Messiah is then foretold 00:47:56.90\00:48:00.50 alright. 00:48:00.50\00:48:02.36 5 Know therefore and understand, v verse 25 that from the going 00:48:02.36\00:48:06.03 forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until what? 00:48:06.03\00:48:09.00 >>Messiah the Prince. 00:48:09.00\00:48:10.63 >>Messiah the Prince. 00:48:10.63\00:48:11.90 There shall be 7 weeks and 62 weeks the streets shall be built 00:48:11.90\00:48:16.43 again and the wall, even in troublous times and here it is 00:48:16.43\00:48:19.66 verse 26 And after 62 weeks Messiah shall be cut off but not 00:48:19.66\00:48:26.43 for himself...cut off but not for himself. 00:48:26.43\00:48:31.06 And the people of the Prince who is to come shall destroy the 00:48:31.06\00:48:35.13 city and the sanctuary, the end of it shall be with a flood, and 00:48:35.13\00:48:39.06 s are determined 00:48:39.06\00:48:42.73 till the end of the war 00:48:39.06\00:48:42.73 desolation 00:48:39.06\00:48:42.73 verse 27 now then he shall that is the Messiah, confirm the 00:48:42.73\00:48:46.73 covenant with many for one week but in the midst of the week he 00:48:46.73\00:48:52.16 shall bring an end to sacrifice an offering. 00:48:52.16\00:48:55.50 This is amazing. 00:48:55.50\00:48:57.70 This prophecy is. 00:48:57.70\00:48:58.90 >>When you called in the premier Messianic prophecy that is 00:48:58.90\00:49:01.10 exactly the right language. 00:49:01.10\00:49:03.13 >>So what's happening here is in the context of the 00:49:03.13\00:49:06.03 unfaithfulness of Israel God then says I've been faithful all 00:49:06.03\00:49:12.43 along. 00:49:12.43\00:49:13.70 I'll continue to be faithful and I'm going to go a step further 00:49:13.70\00:49:17.53 God says. 00:49:17.53\00:49:18.80 I'm going to actually come into human history in the Messiah and 00:49:18.80\00:49:22.20 all of this list of things will be fulfilled in Messiah. 00:49:22.20\00:49:27.63 Jesus was the one all along who was to come and fulfill the 00:49:27.63\00:49:34.76 covenant, not only from the divine end but from the human 00:49:34.76\00:49:39.26 end. 00:49:39.26\00:49:40.53 Now Jesus comes and he is cut off reminiscent of the chapter 00:49:40.53\00:49:45.20 15 was it? 00:49:45.20\00:49:47.56 In Genesis where the animal sacrifice was 00:49:47.56\00:49:50.30 >>Cut in two. 00:49:50.30\00:49:51.73 >>Severed in two and God in the form of a flaming torch of fire 00:49:51.73\00:49:55.03 passed between the pieces. 00:49:55.03\00:49:56.33 Here's the same basic concept of severing and cutting and there's 00:49:56.33\00:50:00.46 going to be a terrible suffering that is going to be under gone 00:50:00.46\00:50:05.00 by the Messiah in order to keep covenant. 00:50:05.00\00:50:08.66 >>Go back even earlier to Genesis 3 we're introduced to 00:50:08.66\00:50:11.16 the deliverer and the first thing we learn about him is that 00:50:11.16\00:50:14.16 he will bear a woundedness. 00:50:14.16\00:50:15.33 >>That's right. 00:50:15.33\00:50:16.13 >>So keep going. 00:50:16.13\00:50:17.40 >>So then in verse 27 the whole point of his sacrifice which by 00:50:17.40\00:50:21.93 the way in verse 26 is not for himself. 00:50:21.93\00:50:24.16 >>That's right. 00:50:24.16\00:50:25.83 >>It's for us. 00:50:25.83\00:50:26.96 This is..this is another censored love that is expressed 00:50:26.96\00:50:29.70 here. 00:50:29.70\00:50:30.60 Jesus is dieing for us. 00:50:30.60\00:50:32.63 >>there are violations of the covenant. 00:50:32.63\00:50:35.30 >>That's right. 00:50:35.30\00:50:36.50 And he dies on the cross for the purpose of confirming the 00:50:36.50\00:50:39.13 covenant--fulfilling the covenant, being faithful to the 00:50:39.13\00:50:43.03 covenant. 00:50:43.03\00:50:44.73 That's the context of this..this prayer..this lament in Daniel 00:50:44.73\00:50:49.50 chapter 9. 00:50:49.50\00:50:50.73 >>Sir Isaac Newton called this the foundation stone of the 00:50:50.73\00:50:53.20 christian religion. 00:50:53.20\00:50:54.60 I mean this is just. 00:50:54.60\00:50:56.00 >>Daniel 9? 00:50:56.00\00:50:56.66 >>Yeah Daniel 9. 00:50:56.66\00:50:57.90 He said this, Sir Isaac Newton said this is the foundation 00:50:57.90\00:50:59.40 stone of the christian religion. 00:50:59.40\00:51:00.66 This is and this is probably one of the most misunderstood 00:51:00.66\00:51:03.23 prophecies. 00:51:03.23\00:51:04.30 >>Yeah. 00:51:04.30\00:51:05.56 >>Of all time and yet one of the most crucial prophecies of all 00:51:05.56\00:51:08.20 time for us to understand. 00:51:08.20\00:51:09.63 >>Well it's the one that Satan would want to hurl his most 00:51:09.63\00:51:12.23 subtle and terrible attacks against because it is such a 00:51:12.23\00:51:15.53 grand and beautiful picture of who the Messiah is. 00:51:15.53\00:51:18.13 >>Not just in Christ's day. 00:51:18.13\00:51:20.63 Not just in Old Testament misunderstanding but even today. 00:51:20.63\00:51:23.46 >>Yeah that's what I'm saying...that's what I'm saying 00:51:23.46\00:51:25.66 even today. 00:51:25.66\00:51:26.90 The whole disspensational and we're not talking about that 00:51:26.90\00:51:28.50 here but the mis-has basically taken this prophecy, a beautiful 00:51:28.50\00:51:32.23 grand illumination. 00:51:32.23\00:51:33.30 >>Of Christ. 00:51:33.30\00:51:34.66 >>Christ and his covenant faithfulness and turned it into 00:51:34.66\00:51:36.30 and anti-Christ thing and a dispensational it's just not 00:51:36.30\00:51:38.83 there. 00:51:38.83\00:51:40.03 >>Which is interesting because that's the same thing that 00:51:40.03\00:51:41.93 happened to the sanctuary. 00:51:41.93\00:51:43.20 The sanctuary service which God desired, designed that we would 00:51:43.20\00:51:47.60 see as an illustration of Christ and the plan of salvation was 00:51:47.60\00:51:51.10 completely misunderstood--misinterpreted. 00:51:51.10\00:51:53.10 IN fact God came to the place in the Old Testament where he says 00:51:53.10\00:51:56.70 you know I am sick and tired of your sacrifices--of your burnt 00:51:56.70\00:51:59.46 offerings. 00:51:59.46\00:52:01.16 They are a stench to my nose. 00:52:01.16\00:52:02.70 I can't stand them anymore. 00:52:02.70\00:52:03.76 >>Yeah that's right. 00:52:03.76\00:52:04.86 >>What are they? 00:52:04.86\00:52:06.10 >> Numerous times in the Old Testament he says sacrifice an 00:52:06.10\00:52:08.46 offering is not what I was after. 00:52:08.46\00:52:09.66 The point wasn't the details. 00:52:09.66\00:52:11.33 It was...you missed the message. 00:52:11.33\00:52:13.73 >>I can't help but think that God is saying the same things 00:52:13.73\00:52:17.53 bout some of our interpretations of end time prophecy today. 00:52:17.53\00:52:19.53 >>Well certainly Daniel 9. 00:52:19.53\00:52:20.80 >>The way that we apply--the way that we focus on prophecy and 00:52:20.80\00:52:22.46 make it all about doom and gloom and not about Jesus 00:52:22.46\00:52:24.26 >>Yep. 00:52:24.26\00:52:25.46 >>I can't help. 00:52:25.46\00:52:26.80 >>Preach it preacher. 00:52:26.80\00:52:27.90 >>I can't help but to think God feels the same way. 00:52:27.90\00:52:29.20 If we can get Christ back into this which is what I really 00:52:29.20\00:52:31.30 appreciate about this whole focus. 00:52:31.30\00:52:32.66 It's all about Messiah and when Messiah becomes center then 00:52:32.66\00:52:36.06 there's something. 00:52:36.06\00:52:37.20 >>James you're quite the Daniel 11 Ephisianoto. 00:52:37.20\00:52:43.10 You're very comfortable with that. 00:52:43.10\00:52:44.36 Where is it in Daniel 11 that Jesus is called the Prince of 00:52:44.36\00:52:45.96 the covenant? 00:52:45.96\00:52:47.70 >>Well it's beautiful really because Daniel 11 is just repeat 00:52:47.70\00:52:50.23 enlarge on Daniel chapter 9, Daniel 8, Daniel, 7, Daniel 2. 00:52:50.23\00:52:51.90 So right dead in the middle, Daniel 11 has 45 verses. 00:52:51.90\00:52:56.33 I mean officially it has 45. 00:52:56.33\00:52:58.13 We can include the 3 verses in Daniel 12, the first 3 but 00:52:58.13\00:53:00.63 Daniel 11:45 right in the middle--half way--20 to 22 00:53:00.63\00:53:04.93 focus, pin point Messiah It talks in verse 20 about this 00:53:04.93\00:53:09.13 razor of taxes standing up in the glory of the kingdom and his 00:53:09.13\00:53:13.50 estate. 00:53:13.50\00:53:14.80 This is historically this is pinpointing the prophecy and the 00:53:14.80\00:53:17.43 prophetic time of Pagan Rome--of Imperial Rome. 00:53:17.43\00:53:21.63 And this razor of taxes is talked about in the New 00:53:21.63\00:53:25.46 Testament. 00:53:25.46\00:53:26.43 >>In the gospels. 00:53:26.43\00:53:27.70 >>Luke chapter 3 this is Augusta Ceaser who or Luke chapter 2 who 00:53:27.70\00:53:30.66 initiated and then right after Augusta Ceasar, when Jesus is 00:53:30.66\00:53:34.16 born. 00:53:34.16\00:53:35.40 You have a vile person, that's Tiberius Ceaser verse 21 and 00:53:35.40\00:53:37.86 then verse 22 with the arms of the flood shall they be 00:53:37.86\00:53:42.00 overflown from beforehand by Tiberius and shall be broken or 00:53:42.00\00:53:44.80 Ceaser I should say. 00:53:44.80\00:53:47.10 Yes also the Prince of the covenant. 00:53:47.10\00:53:49.23 So here is a focus on the Prince of the covenant. 00:53:49.23\00:53:52.53 It is none other than Jesus Christ. 00:53:52.53\00:53:54.23 >>And does it say he'll be broken? 00:53:54.23\00:53:55.90 >>He'll be broken . 00:53:55.90\00:53:57.50 >>That's--he'll be cut off. 00:53:57.50\00:53:59.26 >>Yes. 00:53:59.26\00:54:00.43 >>The Prince of the covenant will come and be broken. 00:54:00.43\00:54:01.40 >>This is the cross. 00:54:01.40\00:54:02.40 This is the cross. 00:54:02.40\00:54:03.73 >>Broken and cut off but not for himself. 00:54:03.73\00:54:05.43 >>I'll go a step further in a prophecy in Isaiah 42 verse 6 00:54:05.43\00:54:08.30 literally Jesus is called, not just the Prince of the covenant. 00:54:08.30\00:54:13.36 He doesn't just confirm the covenant. 00:54:13.36\00:54:16.83 Here the father is speaking and he says to Jesus to Messiah I 00:54:16.83\00:54:20.90 the Lord have called you in righteousness and will hold your 00:54:20.90\00:54:25.60 hand because your going to go through this horrible ordeal of 00:54:25.60\00:54:28.33 sacrifice. 00:54:28.33\00:54:29.40 I'm gonna be with you. 00:54:29.40\00:54:30.66 I will keep you and I will give you as a covenant to the people. 00:54:30.66\00:54:35.53 Jesus is the covenant in a personified form, to use 00:54:35.53\00:54:40.93 s language. 00:54:40.93\00:54:43.16 Jeffery 00:54:40.93\00:54:43.16 >>I love that. 00:54:43.16\00:54:46.26 I love that. 00:54:46.26\00:54:47.16 >>Jesus is the covenant. 00:54:47.16\00:54:48.93 He not only preaches the covenant, he not only keeps the 00:54:48.93\00:54:50.50 covenant, he is the covenant. 00:54:50.50\00:54:52.46 He is the means by which and I think this is where we're going 00:54:52.46\00:54:55.56 in fact I know it's where we're going. 00:54:55.56\00:54:58.60 God's been faithful that's the Old Testament constantly 00:54:58.60\00:54:59.70 extending himself, extending himself . 00:54:59.70\00:55:01.16 He's faithful. 00:55:01.16\00:55:02.30 He's never failed to keep his half of the covenant. 00:55:02.30\00:55:04.16 The rain keeps falling. 00:55:04.16\00:55:05.76 The sun keeps shining. 00:55:05.76\00:55:07.40 The heart keeps beating. 00:55:07.40\00:55:08.50 God is faithful in all of these natural ways and the 00:55:08.50\00:55:09.83 supernatural ways. 00:55:09.83\00:55:11.10 But men fail, fail, fail, Jeremiah, the prophets are come 00:55:11.10\00:55:14.83 back to the covenant. 00:55:14.83\00:55:16.10 The covenant breach is so bad that Babylon finally and other 00:55:16.10\00:55:20.23 nations take them captive and there's just this basically you 00:55:20.23\00:55:23.40 wouldn't call it a punitive recourse but you would say they 00:55:23.40\00:55:26.90 placed themselves so far outside of God's protective domain that 00:55:26.90\00:55:31.73 this is what happened. 00:55:31.73\00:55:33.00 We end up in that situation and then as we draw the thing to a 00:55:33.00\00:55:37.20 close Jesus comes not just God as God being faithful but Jesus 00:55:37.20\00:55:42.46 becomes a man and he is faithful and he extends the hand so 00:55:42.46\00:55:45.10 that--you've mentioned this in >fact, maybe we could just 00:55:45.10\00:55:49.00 quickly go there. 00:55:49.00\00:55:50.70 What's the passage that you have in Hebrews where Jesus is. 00:55:50.70\00:55:53.96 >>7. 00:55:53.96\00:55:54.80 >>7 Hebrews 7:22 00:55:54.80\00:55:55.73 >>Yeah, yeah that's one of my favorites. 00:55:55.73\00:55:58.43 >>Land that here. 00:55:58.43\00:55:59.63 >>Hebrews 7:22 paints the picture here of Jesus--you were 00:55:59.63\00:56:03.70 saying he was the personification of the covenant 00:56:03.70\00:56:06.76 but in Hebrews 7:22 it says the word surety 00:56:06.76\00:56:09.73 It says by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better 00:56:09.73\00:56:15.53 covenant. 00:56:15.53\00:56:16.53 And the word surety there he's the guarantee. 00:56:16.53\00:56:18.40 >>Yes. 00:56:18.40\00:56:19.83 >>But the thing here is that in Hebrews 7 Jesus is the God man. 00:56:19.83\00:56:24.53 Jesus has come into this race, become a human being and with 00:56:24.53\00:56:29.13 one hand he holds the hand of the Father and with the other 00:56:29.13\00:56:32.83 hand he's..he's holding onto the hands of the human race. 00:56:32.83\00:56:36.96 And he's the connecting link and Jesus is the guarantee to us--to 00:56:36.96\00:56:40.73 the human race that God will be faithful in his side--in his end 00:56:40.73\00:56:46.13 of the covenant. 00:56:46.13\00:56:47.40 But Jesus is also the guarantee to God from man that humanity 00:56:47.40\00:56:50.56 will fulfill the covenant. 00:56:50.56\00:56:53.43 Jesus becomes the guarantee both on the God side and the human 00:56:53.43\00:56:59.30 side. 00:56:59.30\00:57:00.23 That's awesome. 00:57:00.23\00:57:01.10 >>He's the way the truth and the life. 00:57:01.10\00:57:03.66 >>And we need that because who among us here or who that's 00:57:03.66\00:57:06.93 listening in has not made some promise to God about something 00:57:06.93\00:57:10.53 they would do or wouldn't do? 00:57:10.53\00:57:12.60 Right and you might not say God I promise--it might not be in 00:57:12.60\00:57:15.93 that language but it can be mental, it can be more subtle--I 00:57:15.93\00:57:20.26 will never blank again or I will again--a vow, a promise and then 00:57:20.26\00:57:22.70 it falls apart. 00:57:22.70\00:57:23.66 Alright it doesn't always fall apart. 00:57:23.66\00:57:25.50 It doesn't have to. 00:57:25.50\00:57:26.73 But it--our promises and our resolutions cannot redeem us, 00:57:26.73\00:57:29.56 they cannot save us, they cannot reconnect us to God. 00:57:29.56\00:57:31.80 So Christ is faithful on our behalf. 00:57:31.80\00:57:34.86 And as we're going to get into our next conversation on 00:57:34.86\00:57:38.16 incarnation on Christ becoming a human being and the infleshment 00:57:38.16\00:57:42.40 of the covenants we're going to see that our responsibility is 00:57:42.40\00:57:46.73 to believe in the faithfulness of Christ of the covenant and as 00:57:46.73\00:57:52.70 the covenant. 00:57:52.70\00:57:54.03 >>Praise God and...and...and this is a great place to land 00:57:54.03\00:57:56.43 this thing. 00:57:56.43\00:57:57.70 I'm personally deeply impressed and blessed by the scriptures 00:57:57.70\00:58:02.70 that we've looked at and just having the idea reaffirmed-in my 00:58:02.70\00:58:08.36 mind that it's not about me. 00:58:08.36\00:58:10.66 >>Yes. 00:58:10.66\00:58:11.96 >>Keeping faith with God. 00:58:11.96\00:58:13.66 s all about him keeping 00:58:13.66\00:58:16.26 It 00:58:13.66\00:58:16.26 faith with me and my 00:58:13.66\00:58:16.26 faithfulness is basically a returning to him >Response. 00:58:16.26\00:58:20.06 >>Yeah, yeah, so beautiful. 00:58:20.06\00:58:22.80 Announcer: To receive our free monthly news letter and a list 00:58:22.80\00:58:27.20 of Light Bearers resources visit us
