Hello, welcome to Teen Pathways 00:00:19.07\00:00:21.89 My name is Doris Morris and today we will be talking about 00:00:21.93\00:00:25.01 responsibility. We are joined by students from 00:00:25.04\00:00:27.69 Laurelbrook Academy, a boarding school in Dayton, Tennessee. 00:00:27.73\00:00:30.67 Introduce yourselves and I would like to hear your 00:00:30.70\00:00:32.84 definition of responsibility. 00:00:32.87\00:00:34.96 My name is Ashley Berger and my definition of responsibility is 00:00:35.26\00:00:39.48 "To realize the importance of the task ahead. " 00:00:39.52\00:00:41.99 My name is Rachael Williamson and to me responsibility means 00:00:42.77\00:00:46.90 "Taking the initiative to do the duties that 00:00:47.28\00:00:49.08 you are supposed to do. " 00:00:49.32\00:00:50.29 I'm Honiko Abrams and to me responsibility means "Being 00:00:50.83\00:00:54.08 accountable for your actions. " 00:00:54.16\00:00:55.83 I'm Vyn Gordon, and responsibility to me means 00:00:57.88\00:01:01.30 "Being on time. " 00:01:01.38\00:01:02.36 My name is Shamarri King and my definition for responsibility 00:01:02.40\00:01:06.60 is "Doing my best. " 00:01:06.63\00:01:08.22 The reason why I wanted you to give your definition of 00:01:08.25\00:01:12.45 responsibility, is because I've watched you 00:01:12.49\00:01:14.50 and you guys have a busy schedule. What is a typical day 00:01:14.54\00:01:18.09 like for you Rachael? 00:01:18.13\00:01:20.22 Usually I get up at about 5:45, and have personal devotions 00:01:20.26\00:01:25.02 then we have dorm worship, then I go to breakfast and that 00:01:25.05\00:01:29.85 lasts until around usually 7:30, then I have school from 7:45 00:01:29.89\00:01:35.83 to 12:00 in the afternoon and then we go to lunch, and usually 00:01:35.86\00:01:40.53 around 12:30 or 12:45 I have an extra curricular activity 00:01:40.56\00:01:44.45 like Choir, Band, or Yearbook, so we go to that, and then from 00:01:44.49\00:01:50.00 2 to 6 we have vocational training, and I am working 00:01:50.03\00:01:55.81 in the office now, so I am helping get everything 00:01:55.84\00:01:58.32 organized and typing things up and things like that. Then at 6 00:01:58.36\00:02:01.95 we have supper, and usually after that we have recreation 00:02:01.99\00:02:06.48 or some sort of social activity kind of thing. Then we have 00:02:06.52\00:02:11.76 study hall and then about 9:30 I go to bed. 00:02:11.79\00:02:14.90 That's a day. Shimmer you are a Junior is that the same 00:02:14.93\00:02:17.85 schedule you keep? No, mine is slightly different. 00:02:17.88\00:02:21.42 I usually start my day around 5:30 in the morning, and 00:02:21.46\00:02:26.08 my vocational training is in the morning, and so right now 00:02:26.12\00:02:30.67 I am being trained at the academy kitchen and I go there 00:02:30.71\00:02:35.02 at 8:00, but before all of that I have breakfast. 00:02:35.06\00:02:38.92 8:00 I go there and stay until 12:30, and then from there 00:02:38.95\00:02:45.85 I go to a class usually Band or Choir or Chorale. Then school 00:02:45.88\00:02:52.63 1:45 till 6:00, and then from 6:00 is supper until about 00:02:52.67\00:02:59.57 6:30, and then usually around 7:30 either we will have a girls 00:02:59.61\00:03:04.94 club night or some sort of recreation, and then I guess 00:03:04.97\00:03:11.50 until 9, and then basically after that I start winding down 00:03:11.53\00:03:16.28 and go to bed around 9:30- 10:00. 00:03:16.32\00:03:18.95 How do you handle a day? It seems really busy, you're 00:03:18.98\00:03:21.79 balancing academic program with a vocational training program, 00:03:21.82\00:03:26.38 and I heard you said you, Where do you work? In the.. 00:03:26.42\00:03:29.65 Academy kitchen Academy kitchen and you're in 00:03:29.68\00:03:32.02 the office and, where are you Honiko, you're in the office? 00:03:32.06\00:03:35.47 I'm the Academy kitchen supervisor actually in the 00:03:35.51\00:03:38.81 evenings, I'm in charge of the girls to make sure that they 00:03:38.85\00:03:41.74 get their work done and then also I fix the supper. 00:03:41.77\00:03:43.98 Ok so you have a supervisory role, what about you? 00:03:44.01\00:03:46.47 Almost everyday I work as a CNA which is a certified 00:03:46.51\00:03:50.84 nursing assistant, in the Nursing home where I do 00:03:50.88\00:03:53.16 the normal activities of daily living for the residents. 00:03:53.20\00:03:56.92 Also on Sundays I do the supervising in Academy kitchen. 00:03:56.96\00:04:01.48 Handling all that and wanting to do it because I know that 00:04:01.52\00:04:05.97 you're pretty driven, wanting to do all things well, the Bible 00:04:06.00\00:04:09.51 says whatsoever your hand findeth to do, do it with all 00:04:09.54\00:04:12.44 your might. 00:04:12.47\00:04:13.70 How in the world can you do all that with all your might? 00:04:13.74\00:04:16.86 A day from 5:30 or 5:00 in the morning till 9:30-10:00 at night 00:04:16.90\00:04:22.02 How does that happen? - I find a lot of times I get 00:04:22.06\00:04:25.33 very very tired, and I'm sitting there saying God please 00:04:25.36\00:04:29.51 give me the strength to go through. I don't know when I'll 00:04:29.54\00:04:33.03 have time to get my homework done, to find the time for a 00:04:33.07\00:04:36.84 short little nap, print off my essay paper. To get everything 00:04:36.87\00:04:42.58 accomplished, but God please help me find a way. 00:04:42.62\00:04:46.37 Yes, every morning before I get up I think its very important 00:04:46.40\00:04:51.14 that we have personal devotion time. To ask God to be with you 00:04:51.18\00:04:54.76 throughout the day and in everything that you do, 00:04:55.04\00:04:56.80 to give you the strength, like Ashley said to make it through 00:04:56.83\00:04:59.28 that day. Because you don't know what life's going to throw 00:04:59.38\00:05:01.56 at you. So is it a pleasure to fulfill 00:05:02.22\00:05:04.71 responsibility? Because people are counting on you apparently, 00:05:04.75\00:05:07.57 you're supervising in the kitchen, you're directing 00:05:07.61\00:05:11.29 young ladies such as yourself, so that you can get a meal 00:05:11.33\00:05:14.36 prepared and feed everybody on campus, staff, students. 00:05:14.40\00:05:19.90 Are you begrudgingly doing this? Or is it a joy to fulfill 00:05:20.90\00:05:24.53 this responsibility? 00:05:24.56\00:05:26.58 As a CNA, it's very rewarding because you will come up and 00:05:26.62\00:05:31.81 have a long day, have some falls, which will make you 00:05:31.84\00:05:35.48 really emotional because they're old and could have seriously 00:05:35.51\00:05:39.16 gotten hurt or something like that. Then later on in the day 00:05:39.19\00:05:42.88 right before you leave you have a resident come up and say 00:05:42.92\00:05:45.91 "You are so sweet, so helpful, I'm glad to have you as my CNA 00:05:45.94\00:05:50.52 to sit there and take care of me every time I need somebody. " 00:05:50.55\00:05:53.73 "You're always there. " And that makes you feel good, 00:05:53.77\00:05:56.66 when you're finished. 00:05:56.70\00:05:58.65 But getting tired that's normal you get exhausted, you're 00:05:58.69\00:06:03.25 saying I've got this to do, that to do, 00:06:03.28\00:06:06.37 and you look for like Honiko said, to spend the time that 00:06:06.40\00:06:10.90 you need with the Lord, so that you can get the strength, 00:06:10.94\00:06:13.31 to take care of your duties, to finish a job, and to say that 00:06:13.34\00:06:17.39 it's done well. But when I think about young people, I don't 00:06:17.42\00:06:22.18 think of young people working in a nursing home or young people 00:06:22.21\00:06:27.16 cooking meals for people, young people balancing so much 00:06:27.20\00:06:31.18 academics effort, yea you go to school and then after that I 00:06:31.21\00:06:34.68 might work two hours at home with my chores, but you guys 00:06:34.71\00:06:38.76 really do it a little differently, why? 00:06:38.79\00:06:43.85 I think one of the reasons is because we're learning how to 00:06:43.88\00:06:47.78 already work, but one of the biggest things is because 00:06:47.82\00:06:51.83 when we get out into more of the real world, I guess if you 00:06:51.87\00:06:55.09 want to say, then we're kind of just going to be thrown out 00:06:55.12\00:06:58.09 there. And now we actually have training to look back on, and 00:06:58.12\00:07:02.11 as we're having that training we're already learning that 00:07:02.15\00:07:05.33 there are going to be times when you are going to be so 00:07:05.36\00:07:08.10 incredibly stressed out, and that's when you have to turn 00:07:08.14\00:07:10.33 to God. So as we're here and we're learning this, then it 00:07:10.36\00:07:15.20 will easily carry over into whatever we choose to do 00:07:15.23\00:07:18.68 afterwards. You know what I've read 00:07:18.71\00:07:21.21 recently? I've read an article, an interview done with a 00:07:21.24\00:07:25.89 corporate executive and they were talking about the talent 00:07:25.93\00:07:28.74 that came out of Colleges, Universities, and High School, 00:07:28.77\00:07:32.50 entering the work force, and one of the number one of the 00:07:32.54\00:07:36.30 number one complains that these executives have is that 00:07:36.34\00:07:38.83 we have all these talented individuals coming into the 00:07:38.86\00:07:41.05 work world, yes they're engineers, yes they know how, 00:07:41.08\00:07:43.02 but they don't have a basic work ethic. They can't keep a 00:07:43.05\00:07:46.02 schedule, they can't juggle tasks, they're not on time, 00:07:46.06\00:07:50.51 and they just don't have what it takes to actually make an 00:07:50.55\00:07:53.52 operation run smoothly. Do you think what you're 00:07:53.55\00:07:55.66 learning, what you're being trained for will help change 00:07:55.70\00:07:58.30 that tide? Vyn? Definitely, because when I 00:07:58.33\00:08:02.93 first got to Laurelbrook, to handle the schedule and 00:08:02.96\00:08:05.64 everything that we had to do, it's a lot more from my 00:08:05.67\00:08:09.33 previous school, at first I thought this is a lot, this is 00:08:09.36\00:08:12.37 really a lot of stuff to do. I really didn't like it at first 00:08:12.40\00:08:16.19 but as you get used to it, and not only that you get used 00:08:16.23\00:08:20.98 to it, if you see how it's helping you be more responsible, 00:08:21.02\00:08:25.57 to get things done, to be on time, to attack something or 00:08:25.61\00:08:29.76 try to do something and get it done when you're supposed to 00:08:29.79\00:08:33.30 the right way the first try, it's just incredible because 00:08:33.34\00:08:38.06 if I learn to be more responsible while I'm young, 00:08:38.10\00:08:44.04 then I know I won't have to do it when I'm older. 00:08:44.07\00:08:46.05 Seems like you need a class in time management, you 00:08:46.09\00:08:49.21 juggle all that. Do you keep a diary? Do you keep a day timer 00:08:49.24\00:08:53.25 or anything to make sure you're where you're supposed to be at 00:08:53.29\00:08:55.63 any given time? Well it's hard because when you 00:08:55.67\00:08:58.22 have to pull a 5:30 shift, you have to go over there and help 00:08:58.26\00:09:01.61 make breakfast, or work in the nursing home, or prepare the 00:09:01.65\00:09:06.02 meals for the residents, it's hard because you have to get up 00:09:06.06\00:09:08.54 at 5:00 in the morning and be awake enough to be able to 00:09:08.57\00:09:12.48 perform your duties, and then when exams come you're trying 00:09:12.52\00:09:15.92 to study for those, and it's very hard but you have to learn 00:09:15.95\00:09:20.69 how to adapt with it and I think all this will help when we get 00:09:20.72\00:09:24.93 out into the working world and we do have to go into early, go 00:09:24.96\00:09:28.53 into work early, or we have deadlines to meet there. I 00:09:28.57\00:09:32.25 think it will help. What about balance? 00:09:32.29\00:09:35.62 It's important because as Christians, sometimes you can 00:09:35.66\00:09:39.89 go overboard, as non-Christians you hear about burnout. 00:09:39.93\00:09:44.32 Stress, and stress-related illnesses, but the importance 00:09:44.36\00:09:48.49 of balance, you cannot ever discount that fact. 00:09:48.53\00:09:51.65 Where do you find the balance between work and school, 00:09:51.68\00:09:56.00 your personal life, your family life, and friendships as well? 00:09:56.03\00:09:59.08 For me during the school year, I look forward to the weekends, 00:09:59.11\00:10:04.47 Sabbath, every third week I work so I have 2 Sabbath's off. 00:10:04.50\00:10:08.64 Then on Sunday I only work 4 hours and we don't go to school 00:10:08.67\00:10:12.90 so I have the rest of the day off. So that is the time I find 00:10:12.93\00:10:15.62 for personal, and during the rest of the week I have my 00:10:15.66\00:10:18.65 school work, and my work, so I have my days of rest but yet 00:10:18.69\00:10:23.03 I still have my days that I'm pushing to get what I need 00:10:23.07\00:10:25.66 to do done. What about you Honiko? 00:10:25.70\00:10:28.01 Kind of like Ashley was saying, on Sundays we only have our 00:10:28.05\00:10:31.88 vocational training for 4 hours and then we're off the rest of 00:10:31.92\00:10:35.38 the day so if I don't have any major homework or anything 00:10:35.41\00:10:38.77 I try to take that time to relax and kind of unwind from 00:10:38.81\00:10:42.64 week, I like to take a nap or read a book, go horseback riding 00:10:42.68\00:10:47.42 or something like that, just to relieve stress and have fun. 00:10:47.45\00:10:50.64 But I don't see students walking around the campus shuffling 00:10:50.68\00:10:56.61 along or exhausted, you seem like you're having a good 00:10:56.65\00:10:59.29 time, I don't want to give anyone the opinion that you're 00:10:59.33\00:11:01.68 not having a good time. Are you, or? 00:11:01.72\00:11:03.42 I think most of the time everyone learns to adapt to the 00:11:03.45\00:11:06.23 way the schedule works, nobody has ever just absolutely given 00:11:06.27\00:11:09.96 out or just fallen down from just dead exhaustion, that's 00:11:10.00\00:11:12.26 never happened, and I don't think it's going to happen 00:11:12.29\00:11:15.11 because our bodies were made to work, we weren't made to just 00:11:15.15\00:11:17.84 sit around and be lazy, and so I think we just 00:11:17.88\00:11:21.47 what more you learn its just how you can see what you can do, 00:11:21.51\00:11:26.00 you actually learn more about yourself, saying I can handle 00:11:26.03\00:11:28.52 this, I didn't think I could before but I actually can. 00:11:28.56\00:11:31.48 During the week even though your so busy, there is still 00:11:31.52\00:11:34.38 little times, that you take out for yourself. Meals, you can 00:11:34.41\00:11:38.44 just sort of sit around and a lot of times during meals we 00:11:38.48\00:11:42.25 don't discuss the day, we discuss other things. So it just 00:11:42.28\00:11:45.39 sort of gives your mind a break from thinking about "Oh 00:11:45.42\00:11:47.54 I have to do this, I have to do that. " 00:11:47.58\00:11:49.32 No that's when you can just sit around, you can talk to 00:11:49.36\00:11:50.99 friends, and do all those kind of things. So there's still 00:11:51.02\00:11:53.86 small times during the day where you can relax and recoup. 00:11:53.89\00:11:57.95 I have a question, I ask myself Why I have to be responsible, 00:11:57.98\00:12:04.25 I mean I'm young I could have all the fun I want to but you 00:12:04.29\00:12:07.57 know to ask yourself why do we need to be responsible, 00:12:07.60\00:12:11.35 as young people? Why? 00:12:11.39\00:12:15.22 I think the reason we need to be responsible is because that's 00:12:15.25\00:12:19.25 what we have to do throughout our whole lives, it's kind of 00:12:19.28\00:12:22.67 what gives life meaning, is responsibility, the things that 00:12:22.70\00:12:26.07 we're going to have to do. Not just learning for the future 00:12:26.10\00:12:29.76 oh you will end up being responsible when you're older, 00:12:29.80\00:12:32.52 but for now just let them be kids, just let them have fun. 00:12:32.56\00:12:35.81 But if they're not learning then they're not going to have 00:12:35.85\00:12:38.19 a foundation and that's the reason the corporate world 00:12:38.23\00:12:42.61 is saying that people aren't coming on time, they're not 00:12:42.64\00:12:45.20 doing their jobs, they're not doing what they're supposed 00:12:45.24\00:12:47.23 to be doing. That's because they haven't laid a foundation. 00:12:47.26\00:12:49.67 But even now we learn how to be responsible. 00:12:49.70\00:12:52.68 I think what's sad about this generation right now is 00:12:52.72\00:12:56.53 parents are sitting there their kids "Well it's ok. " 00:12:56.57\00:12:59.20 They don't need to do chores like I used to have to do. 00:12:59.24\00:13:02.71 They can go play their computer games, they can go watch T.V. 00:13:02.74\00:13:06.09 and have fun, and they think that overnight they're going 00:13:06.13\00:13:09.33 to change and all of a sudden be responsible when they 00:13:09.36\00:13:11.86 hit 21. But that's not going to happen. It needs to be 00:13:11.90\00:13:16.02 cultivated from the time their little by "Pick up your toys," 00:13:16.05\00:13:20.47 and progress on, until you get older. 00:13:20.51\00:13:23.85 It starts when you're young doesn't it? 00:13:23.88\00:13:27.43 Shamarri? To go off of what Ashley said 00:13:27.46\00:13:30.60 if you start habits when you're younger it's easier when you're 00:13:30.64\00:13:33.74 older because if you try to just snap like she said and just 00:13:33.77\00:13:38.03 become an adult in one day, it would never happen you have 00:13:38.06\00:13:41.51 to plan yourself, and see, plan your schedule and be 00:13:41.55\00:13:47.26 responsible and stick to it. When I think about 00:13:47.30\00:13:50.74 responsibility I would think back to the very beginning in 00:13:50.77\00:13:53.85 the Garden of Eden. God could have created Adam and Eve and 00:13:53.89\00:13:56.86 said "Oh just go and have fun. " But he knew that wasn't what 00:13:56.90\00:14:00.75 they needed. They needed to work, they needed to be in 00:14:00.79\00:14:05.03 there, He gave them the job of naming the animals, he gave 00:14:05.06\00:14:07.36 them the job of taking care of the garden, make sure 00:14:07.40\00:14:10.24 everything stays nice, and so he gave them responsibilities 00:14:10.28\00:14:14.12 when they were there, He just didn't say "Oh, go 00:14:14.16\00:14:16.07 have a good time. " But He also, and I'm glad 00:14:16.11\00:14:18.44 you brought that up, when I think about the responsibility 00:14:18.48\00:14:22.36 that he gave Adam, to tend the Garden, and he gave them 00:14:22.39\00:14:24.89 jobs to do. It talks about when God, He walked 00:14:24.92\00:14:30.45 and talked with Adam in the cool of the day. 00:14:30.49\00:14:33.31 I would think that He's instructing Adam, He's spending 00:14:33.35\00:14:36.67 time with him, He's helping to shape his character, and giving 00:14:36.70\00:14:40.03 him the tools that he needed in order to do a job well. 00:14:40.07\00:14:44.31 Do you have some times, you know there are adults, 00:14:44.34\00:14:47.64 in your environment, your parents, how do you get the 00:14:47.67\00:14:51.48 help that you need? Some times it does get to be 00:14:51.52\00:14:53.67 a bit much for everybody. Do you have support? 00:14:53.71\00:14:56.19 Oh definitely, when I have a rough day, and I'm just 00:14:56.23\00:14:59.48 about ready to fall apart, I'll call home and I'll talk to 00:14:59.52\00:15:02.15 either my mom or dad, even sometimes my older sister, 00:15:02.18\00:15:05.63 and they will listen, they're all great listeners, and then 00:15:05.67\00:15:09.08 they try to get me encouragement and support, but even the staff 00:15:09.12\00:15:14.63 at Laurelbrook. I look up to and really respect a lot of the 00:15:14.66\00:15:17.62 staff there, because I know if I need to call them at 2:00 00:15:17.66\00:15:20.72 in the morning, they'll be there for me. 00:15:20.76\00:15:24.26 How much support do you get from your friends Shamarri? 00:15:24.29\00:15:27.12 For me, I get lot's of support because all of my friends were 00:15:27.15\00:15:30.43 striving to go on the upper path and do the same things. 00:15:30.46\00:15:34.59 So it's very easy for me because I can sit down and talk to 00:15:34.62\00:15:38.34 somebody and they can understand, they're doing the 00:15:38.38\00:15:40.70 same thing I am, and they can understand where I'm coming 00:15:40.73\00:15:43.67 from. Building off of what Honiko 00:15:43.70\00:15:45.74 said about the staff always being there, what helps a lot 00:15:45.78\00:15:48.89 is we have, in the past years that I've been at Laurelbrook 00:15:48.93\00:15:52.40 and also now, we have some staff that also graduated from 00:15:52.44\00:15:55.72 Laurelbrook themselves. So therefore they really do 00:15:55.76\00:15:59.58 know what I went through because they actually went to 00:15:59.61\00:16:01.90 the same school, they had the same rules as I did, and 00:16:01.94\00:16:05.74 when I call them up, I can ask them "How did you do this when 00:16:05.77\00:16:09.98 you were a student?" Then they can tell me, because 00:16:10.01\00:16:12.91 they did it, it's not like another staff that came as a 00:16:12.94\00:16:16.12 staff member and never knew Laurelbrook before, they 00:16:16.16\00:16:18.52 were here as a student. So you think about the level 00:16:18.55\00:16:21.99 of responsibility that you guys have daily. Is it in any 00:16:22.02\00:16:26.95 way hindering your teenage years, typical teenage years? 00:16:26.98\00:16:30.10 Of course, it does hinder me being a teen, some might think 00:16:30.14\00:16:36.27 that the only thing that I want to do is to have fun 00:16:36.30\00:16:39.23 sometimes, and I don't want to take on the responsibility. 00:16:39.26\00:16:41.97 But I realized that, if I take it on now, I won't have to 00:16:42.01\00:16:47.30 do it later. Laurelbrook has provided a good opportunity 00:16:47.33\00:16:51.51 for me to do that, because since I've been there, the program 00:16:51.54\00:16:54.91 that they've had and the things that we just do in day to 00:16:54.94\00:16:58.42 day life. In every step of it, it just prepares me for, 00:16:58.45\00:17:01.95 and I look at that way, it just prepares me for having 00:17:01.98\00:17:05.18 to do it sometime later. So I'll be way ahead of my peers 00:17:05.22\00:17:11.48 maybe sometime, because of attacking it when I was young, 00:17:11.52\00:17:15.59 and it's a good thing for me to do right now. 00:17:15.62\00:17:17.89 Also kind of going along with what Vyn was saying, 00:17:17.92\00:17:20.65 when you show that your responsible, it also means that 00:17:20.69\00:17:24.55 you're dependable. So if you're put in charge of 00:17:24.58\00:17:27.05 babysitting, or watching your brother or sister or something, 00:17:27.09\00:17:30.74 your parents expect you to do that, instead of after they 00:17:30.77\00:17:33.84 leave you sneak out and go out with your friends or something 00:17:33.88\00:17:36.27 like that. They expect you to stay there and take care of 00:17:36.31\00:17:39.58 your little brother and sister, and I think that's what 00:17:39.62\00:17:42.41 you get that from. Going after what Vyn and Honiko 00:17:42.45\00:17:46.81 said, it makes me think about Daniel in the Bible. 00:17:46.85\00:17:49.52 If his mother hadn't trained him when he was younger, 00:17:49.55\00:17:52.35 to be responsible, to go through with your duties that 00:17:52.38\00:17:55.05 people have given to you or asked you to do, 00:17:55.09\00:17:58.60 then later on as he was taken captive, he would've never 00:17:58.63\00:18:01.66 been able to fulfill through with the small things he 00:18:01.69\00:18:04.99 had to go and study in school, before he was able to go up 00:18:05.02\00:18:09.22 higher in the king's court. He had to be responsible 00:18:09.25\00:18:12.19 and follow through in the simple duties to make the king 00:18:12.22\00:18:14.79 look and say "There is something different about him. " 00:18:14.83\00:18:17.79 He was taken captive with several other people that were 00:18:17.82\00:18:23.85 with him, but the king noticed something different about him. 00:18:23.89\00:18:27.70 He noticed that he was responsible in the things 00:18:27.73\00:18:30.22 that he did, and same with us we have to be 00:18:30.26\00:18:33.05 responsible with the small things, because if we're not 00:18:33.09\00:18:37.61 responsible with the small things, then there's no way we 00:18:37.65\00:18:40.52 can be responsible with bigger things. 00:18:40.56\00:18:42.85 Often you're alone, nobody's watching you, 00:18:42.89\00:18:46.44 make sure that you do this correctly or you not do this 00:18:46.47\00:18:52.85 duty all the way or do half, nobody's watching you I mean 00:18:52.89\00:18:56.15 what's the big deal? I think it's very important 00:18:56.18\00:18:58.66 when you think of our journey as through our lives which are 00:18:58.70\00:19:01.76 goal is to go to heaven, God is watching everything we do 00:19:01.79\00:19:05.32 every small thing, that's done in secret, and He's 00:19:05.36\00:19:10.54 recording it, and if we can't do a small thing, how is He 00:19:10.57\00:19:14.99 going to entrust us with the precious gift of bringing a 00:19:15.02\00:19:20.00 soul to Christ. How can He entrust that to us if we don't 00:19:20.03\00:19:23.90 take the responsibility to just take out the trash. 00:19:23.93\00:19:27.97 I agree with what Ashley said about our biggest responsibility 00:19:28.01\00:19:31.05 is going to be bringing souls into the kingdom and so if we 00:19:31.09\00:19:35.19 can learn how to be responsible in small things like she said, 00:19:35.23\00:19:38.05 but also to have that kind of responsibility, and to be able 00:19:38.09\00:19:42.70 to get everything done that we have to do whether it's really 00:19:42.74\00:19:45.35 really big and a whole lot we have to do or even just a 00:19:45.39\00:19:47.51 little. We just have to give every day, every hour, every 00:19:47.54\00:19:51.23 minute even over to God, and just say listen this is 00:19:51.26\00:19:54.82 what I have to do and I don't think I can handle all this 00:19:54.85\00:19:57.23 right now. But you've given it to me so you obviously know 00:19:57.26\00:20:00.52 I can so please help me carry through with it. 00:20:00.56\00:20:03.33 Everything is a stepping stone to something greater isn't it? 00:20:03.37\00:20:06.81 The Bible says in Zachariah, "Not by power, nor by might, 00:20:06.85\00:20:11.57 but by my spirit sayeth the Lord. " He means everything 00:20:11.61\00:20:15.24 you take everything, He said cast all your cares upon 00:20:15.28\00:20:17.72 me, because I care for you. There is nothing, that we have 00:20:17.76\00:20:22.38 to concern ourselves with that we say "Uhh, it's me I'm 00:20:22.42\00:20:25.32 doing it alone. " Is it hard to get puffed up? Especially 00:20:25.35\00:20:27.74 supervising. You know you have a whole staff and you're 00:20:27.78\00:20:31.75 only what, 17? So you can kind of get 00:20:31.79\00:20:34.89 the big head about that. How do you handle that? 00:20:34.92\00:20:38.95 These are your peers, do they listen to you? 00:20:38.98\00:20:40.48 Yes, the girls do really well. I just let them know that I 00:20:40.51\00:20:46.45 want to be their friend, but that also I expect them to do 00:20:46.48\00:20:48.77 their work well. But also I'm still their classmate, I'm 00:20:48.81\00:20:55.22 still their friend, I'm still the same girl outside of 00:20:55.25\00:20:58.09 supervising as I am inside. It's just that the position is a 00:20:58.12\00:21:02.07 little different. And those of you who are 00:21:02.11\00:21:04.87 in the medical field, medical aspect of the work, that's a 00:21:04.91\00:21:08.52 tough one too because, people's lives are depending 00:21:08.55\00:21:11.17 on you. They really are, so if you can't be responsible 00:21:11.20\00:21:14.50 in that area, then you gave somebody the wrong medicine, 00:21:14.54\00:21:20.09 or the wrong exercise, or take them out at the wrong 00:21:20.12\00:21:22.19 time of day, lift and dip, in the wrong way, they can really 00:21:22.23\00:21:24.93 break a bone, when I think about the elderly. So 00:21:24.97\00:21:27.91 responsibility, and understanding what the task 00:21:27.95\00:21:30.29 entails, and doing it to the best of your ability, that 00:21:30.32\00:21:32.88 really is nothing to just point a stick at you really need to 00:21:32.92\00:21:37.42 know what you're doing and to pay attention. 00:21:37.46\00:21:39.70 Don't you think? I think when we go in the 00:21:39.73\00:21:42.52 contrast of when Jesus was at Gethsemane. 00:21:42.55\00:21:45.04 Our responsibility wouldn't seem that great, and that burns 00:21:45.08\00:21:49.11 and when you think that Jesus carried the weight of the world 00:21:49.15\00:21:52.20 upon him. It was so great, He was asking the Father to take it 00:21:52.24\00:21:55.77 away, and if He had to, then let me keep it. And if He 00:21:55.80\00:21:59.76 can carry the weight of every one of us, 00:21:59.79\00:22:02.37 we should be able to, with his help, carry just ours. 00:22:02.41\00:22:05.98 That's right, but also at every stage of Jesus' life it 00:22:06.01\00:22:10.05 says He was perfect and we're asked to be perfect in our 00:22:10.09\00:22:12.31 sphere. So he had every stage of His life, and He 00:22:12.34\00:22:15.99 had it down a path, so you're at the teen age, 00:22:16.03\00:22:18.89 phase of your life so we don't expect a big Gethsemane yet, 00:22:18.93\00:22:24.75 but what you're doing it says you do it with all your might. 00:22:24.78\00:22:27.83 Because as time goes on and we know that you guys will have 00:22:27.86\00:22:32.16 some things that need to be taken care of as you get older 00:22:32.20\00:22:35.31 especially in these days. So how do you really understand 00:22:35.34\00:22:39.84 that what you're doing now is most important, especially when 00:22:39.88\00:22:44.03 what you're doing now is just pouring juice, or writing an 00:22:44.06\00:22:47.16 essay, or taking a math test. 00:22:47.19\00:22:49.80 It's helpful, you know, that I am a CNA 00:22:51.20\00:22:52.71 and I eventually want to be an OBGYN 00:22:52.76\00:22:55.50 and knowing that being in the medical health 00:22:55.79\00:22:59.21 we prepare 00:22:59.37\00:23:00.41 to be when I'm going to be eventually is a doctor 00:23:00.44\00:23:02.82 and I am starting at the bottom of the scale 00:23:02.86\00:23:04.94 and eventually I'm going to work to the top. 00:23:04.98\00:23:07.03 So everything that we do all the responsibility 00:23:08.64\00:23:11.15 that you are taking, now, and you are finding great 00:23:11.18\00:23:14.24 pleasure great joy and fulfilling responsibility. 00:23:14.27\00:23:16.93 But we know that not a moment is being wasted, right? 00:23:16.97\00:23:19.60 Because you are in preparation. 00:23:19.63\00:23:21.50 The Lord needs responsible young people. 00:23:21.54\00:23:24.05 He needs responsible young people now. 00:23:24.09\00:23:26.16 He needs responsible young people to 00:23:26.20\00:23:28.20 fulfill a great job in these last days, right? 00:23:28.24\00:23:31.99 The... that's right, the Lord does need responsible 00:23:32.02\00:23:35.90 young people, and even more than that 00:23:35.93\00:23:38.51 There is a quote that I've learned earlier 00:23:38.55\00:23:41.36 and I might paraphrase it 00:23:41.39\00:23:43.12 referring to how much 00:23:43.16\00:23:44.86 the world needs people that are responsible. 00:23:44.89\00:23:47.79 And it says "The greatest want of the world 00:23:47.83\00:23:50.72 is the want of men. " 00:23:50.75\00:23:52.25 Men who are in their inmost souls are true and honest. 00:23:52.28\00:23:56.18 And men who will not be bought or sold. 00:23:56.21\00:23:59.31 And it also went on to say that 00:23:59.34\00:24:02.58 the world wants men 00:24:02.61\00:24:03.80 who will stand to duty as a needle to the pole 00:24:03.84\00:24:07.71 and men who will stand for the right 00:24:07.74\00:24:09.53 though the heavens fall. 00:24:09.56\00:24:10.54 And, you know, if you are not responsible 00:24:10.57\00:24:12.34 and you are not brave enough and you are not 00:24:12.37\00:24:14.13 courageous enough, 00:24:14.16\00:24:15.13 then there is no way you could fulfill that purpose 00:24:15.14\00:24:19.52 you could fulfill that slot. 00:24:19.55\00:24:22.30 And to go with what Vyn said 00:24:24.11\00:24:25.55 we don't have to be afraid 00:24:25.59\00:24:26.96 to be responsible because God will not put on us more than 00:24:27.00\00:24:31.52 we can bear. He has promised to us that 00:24:31.55\00:24:33.84 He will be there by our side to walk us through it 00:24:33.88\00:24:36.23 and He will not put more upon us than we can bear. 00:24:36.27\00:24:38.59 So we think about living in the present 00:24:39.95\00:24:42.53 not wishing or hoping that you could 00:24:42.57\00:24:44.99 you know, have fewer responsibilities 00:24:45.03\00:24:47.42 and not wanting more than you have 00:24:47.45\00:24:50.51 just knowing it says that "what ever state you find yourself at 00:24:50.55\00:24:53.20 there with to be content" 00:24:53.23\00:24:54.70 to know that there is a perfect plan for each of our lives 00:24:54.73\00:24:57.82 and what we're doing now today is fulfilling 00:24:57.85\00:25:01.28 that plan through taking care of the responsibilities 00:25:01.32\00:25:03.99 that you have for the moment. Don't you? 00:25:04.02\00:25:06.20 Also I think, everything is not going to be 00:25:07.62\00:25:09.90 something that we like doing. 00:25:09.93\00:25:11.85 We might have to start like you might hate sweeping 00:25:11.89\00:25:14.89 but you might have to start actually sweeping the floor 00:25:14.92\00:25:17.89 or doing something like that. 00:25:17.92\00:25:18.89 Washing dishes. 00:25:18.92\00:25:20.10 You know when I was younger I hated washing dishes but now 00:25:20.14\00:25:23.03 I am working in the academy kitchen and I need to have the 00:25:23.07\00:25:25.89 dishes clean and presentable for those who are going to use them. 00:25:25.93\00:25:30.46 and the thing is it will build us up to bigger and greater 00:25:30.50\00:25:35.00 things It's humble responsibilities too that sometimes make a person 00:25:36.89\00:25:40.62 who they are. 00:25:40.65\00:25:41.62 You think of famous people that we know and 00:25:41.63\00:25:43.62 and they didn't start off that way 00:25:43.65\00:25:45.43 they had very humble positions, 00:25:45.47\00:25:47.18 but they did those jobs, they did them well. 00:25:47.22\00:25:49.75 you know to the best of their abilities. 00:25:49.79\00:25:52.29 And that's all we can ask for. 00:25:52.32\00:25:53.51 Help me to do it to the best of my ability. 00:25:53.55\00:25:56.78 The other people that you associate with 00:25:56.81\00:26:00.01 every single day. Do they understand 00:26:00.04\00:26:03.81 what happens when a person comes into an environment? 00:26:03.84\00:26:06.41 Maybe they don't understand the level of responsibility 00:26:06.44\00:26:09.00 that you have, or the jobs that you have to do. 00:26:09.03\00:26:10.84 How do you get them to do it well? 00:26:10.87\00:26:13.48 You take them and you show them how to do it. 00:26:13.52\00:26:16.63 A lot of times they need to know how to do it 00:26:16.67\00:26:18.87 because they have never done that before. 00:26:18.91\00:26:21.04 I've seen people come in and not know how to slice a tomato. 00:26:21.08\00:26:23.65 and you just show them how 00:26:23.68\00:26:26.34 to do the work that's ahead of them 00:26:26.38\00:26:28.32 and also encourage them and tell them 00:26:28.35\00:26:30.22 that yeah when you start out it's really hard, 00:26:30.26\00:26:33.32 but the more you do it the easier it becomes 00:26:33.35\00:26:35.92 and soon it seems like an easy task. 00:26:35.95\00:26:38.33 So where do you go from here with that, 00:26:39.81\00:26:41.52 what you've learned so far? 00:26:41.55\00:26:43.12 You know just before we look at all that we've learned 00:26:43.16\00:26:46.32 you know being responsible is not always the easiest thing. 00:26:46.36\00:26:50.66 Sometimes you might be called up and beyond, you know 00:26:50.69\00:26:53.51 that you might be 00:26:53.54\00:26:54.51 you think you're incapable of doing 00:26:54.54\00:26:56.51 or something that's really discouraging 00:26:56.54\00:26:58.46 and you know, it seems like you can't get through it. 00:26:58.50\00:27:02.08 and you know, it just takes prayer and perseverance 00:27:02.11\00:27:05.66 to do it because you know it's good for you 00:27:05.69\00:27:08.30 you know it's something that's going to build you up 00:27:08.34\00:27:11.52 and help others that are around you that are 00:27:11.55\00:27:13.39 going to benefit from you 00:27:13.42\00:27:15.95 just being responsible enough to do it. 00:27:15.99\00:27:19.01 Fulfilling all those character traits out: 00:27:19.05\00:27:21.65 Perseverance, What else? 00:27:21.68\00:27:23.48 Prayer 00:27:23.51\00:27:24.48 Being able to stick to something. 00:27:24.49\00:27:26.66 That's very, very important 00:27:26.69\00:27:29.06 and all those things make you who you are. 00:27:29.10\00:27:30.78 Well, I'd hope that 00:27:30.81\00:27:33.15 you guys will continue to take joy and take pleasure 00:27:33.19\00:27:36.37 in being responsible young people 00:27:36.40\00:27:39.27 so that you can effect change not only here 00:27:39.31\00:27:41.77 at your school, but everywhere that you go. 00:27:41.80\00:27:44.75 Because God needs responsible people. 00:27:44.78\00:27:46.89 He needs people who will go out there and take control 00:27:46.93\00:27:50.74 and get a job done and get that job done well. 00:27:50.77\00:27:53.00 Remember, "Not by power, nor by might, but by My Spirit" 00:27:53.04\00:27:58.12 sayeth the Lord.
