with a bunch of ladies.

I was only child
for about 14 years,

until later on my
mother had another son.

What was it like
growing up in your household

knew my dad was there,

and back in the '80s

that's when cocaine began to hit

and stuff like that around '86.

And him and his brothers,

a lot of them had
got strung out on drugs,

which was the cocaine.

And so dad came in, I remember,
I remember hear my mother,

I was five years old in
the back seat of the car,

I remember her saying that,

"You need to get of
drugs, get off the cocaine."

Yeah. And it
just stuck in my mind.

So he wasn't there,
they end up separating

when I was five years old.

you know, it has a lot
to play even till today,

mother along with her to,

And so that kind of, when
she had me at a young age,

And so, she used to take
me along to church with her

and I was going
to a Baptist church

ever since I was
like eight or nine.

We would go to church on
Sunday but come home it was...

Like a regular day.

You know, it's
regular day. Definitely.

And so that's,
that's what that was like.

But I was in church

and that's why I actually
I can say it's my first job.

cleaning the church.

one Thursday I was cleaning,

nobody is there, I
was in the sanctuary.

there with the pastor

who normally preachers.

vacuuming but I stopped

and I began to act like

I was preaching
to the congregation.

Yeah, to the congregation. Okay.

And so then all of a
sudden I heard his voice said,

"This is what
you're gonna do for me."

And I was like, you know,
I didn't know what it was.

And I just continued on,
and then I went back vacuuming

and going buffing the
floors like my normal day,

at the age of 12.

And then, later on
in my life, about 15,

I was walking down the street,
I heard the same voice again.

And I said, "No,
I'm not. No, no, no way.

I'm gonna do this for you."

And so, but growing up
in my household religion

was just formality.

There really was no,
there was no sacrifice,

oneself living for God.

What do you think were
some of the motivating factors

that led you to
gravitate towards the streets,

being that your
father wasn't present there,

were some of the
major underlying issues?

Well, since there
was no God in the home,

you know, my
mother had raised me

the best way she knew how,

and not only that
but she had two jobs.

So she really wasn't
home, my grandmother,

she would tell my
grandmother, you know, do this,

don't let him do this
and my grandmother is like,

And I remember coming home
from school with report card,

I had like five F's, you know,

and my
grandmother would sign it,

my mother would never see it

and she will send it
back it school with it.

But just the
being on the streets

my grandmother, my
grandmother let me go out.

there in the streets

and then seeing the
many things around me,

playing with my friends,

the last generation

the fast money, the nice cars,

the sports cars back then

and see the guys a little older

money and fast money.

Influence of that is
like, "Wow", you know,

and seeing them with
the women on their sides,

So there was an influence
that and then I see my cousin,

he was more into
street than I was at that time

and I want to hangout
with him, I was the only child.

And so he kind of led me
alone a little bit in that area

but I was willing to go.

And so I just went
down here from there.

Definitely, now, did seeing the
fast money, seeing the drugs,

seeing the women
different things like that,

how did it balance out
with you in terms of school,

having to go to school

and, you know,
seeing those things

and seeing fast money?

And the reason I'm asking this

because I know, for my own self,

it didn't really make
sense to me when I was young.

I go to school, I
would see these young people,

15, 16 years old,
they got what you said,

they got the
money, they got the women,

tattoos, gold
teeth in the mouth,

different things like
that which is just attractive.

And I wanted it,

and then I kind of
weighed it out a little bit

and I said,
"Okay, I go to school,

I stay here in high
school, I go to college."

And I couldn't see
the money that fast

staying in school as
I would on the streets.

So how did you, how
did you balance that out?

Well, for me, I had
more interest in sports

than anything else.

I was just football, football,

And so in order to be
on the team, you know,

you had to make good
grades and stuff like that.

But making the transition

from middle
school into high school,

I failed to do
that in the ninth grade,

and I failed the first
semester in ninth grade

and turn around
failed the second semester,

so I couldn't play ball

because I actually signed
up late and it's like too late.

So after that I was like,

you know, I'm just gonna
rebel and just do my thing.

I learned about
drugs, selling weed

and stuff like
that and smoking weed

and I would bring
it to the high school.

You know, once I,
the money was there,

I've seen the
fast money coming in

I no longer wanted
this type of education.

And it was like, they saying,
you know, "You want a good job

when you get older,"
you know, they ask me,

"What do you wanna do so
you can make good money,"

and stuff like that.

I'm like, "Well, I could make
good money already right here".

Yeah, yeah.

And so that's
what I did in there.

through high school,

I was kicked out

just because of my academics

to alternative school.

started back playing ball

gonna continue selling drugs",

Have seen where, you
know, statistics say that

a lot of young
black males, you know,

we seem to gravitate to sports,

basketball, football,
different things like that.

And did you see for
yourself that when those dreams

weren't coming to
fulfillment, it was almost like,
00:09:31.00\00:09:33.87
"What else do I do?"
00:09:33.90\00:09:35.24
Because I know for
myself that's where I was.
00:09:35.27\00:09:38.01
I like
basketball, I like football
00:09:38.04\00:09:40.41
but because I never
would do anything in school,

and then I would be in a mixture
00:09:43.14\00:09:44.55
of Adventist schools
00:09:44.58\00:09:46.61
as well as
mixture of public schools.

And either I
couldn't make the grade

or I wouldn't go to school

or I had the
Sabbath to deal with.

And it was like, okay, now
that sports hasn't come through,

it's almost like
what else can I do.

It's like, "Okay, I
don't wanna do this,

I don't wanna do that."

There was never any
goal and without that goal,

vision, the people perish."

And the only thing I
reverted back to was the streets

and that attracted
me that fast money.

So you kind of feel
like it was the same for you?

like, you know, my dad

he, like I said, he
wasn't with my mother

but he was living in
the same neighborhood.

to teach me skills,

you know, like painting

and he wanted to teach
me how to play the piano,

play the drums,
construction, fix some cars.

And I just
rejected all of that to want

to run the streets,
so I wasted my childhood

on running the streets.

I didn't pick up
any skills or anything.

So once I, the
sports didn't work for me,

only thing I
knew how to go to was

just treat some of this.

still suffer from,

there and you get tired of it.
