All right. 00:01:20.01\00:01:21.34 How about you, sir? Good, good, good. 00:01:21.38\00:01:22.71 Now you and I've talked a little bit about your past 00:01:22.74\00:01:24.91 but that's not where I want to begin. 00:01:24.95\00:01:26.58 I kind of want to begin with you finding yourself 00:01:26.61\00:01:29.68 on a Christian college campus enrolled to study theology, 00:01:29.72\00:01:34.06 but then finding yourself 00:01:34.09\00:01:35.79 wanting to do something other than... 00:01:35.82\00:01:37.33 Tell us about that experience? 00:01:37.36\00:01:39.36 Well, first of all, 00:01:39.39\00:01:40.73 I found myself on the college of Oakwood, now university, 00:01:40.76\00:01:45.50 where my sister was being reenrolled. 00:01:45.53\00:01:48.34 We're starting new semester. 00:01:48.37\00:01:50.47 And my mother asked me if I want to go to school... 00:01:50.51\00:01:53.48 Now just real quick. 00:01:53.51\00:01:54.84 Was this your first time at Oakwood? 00:01:54.88\00:01:56.21 My first time. First time at Oakwood. 00:01:56.24\00:01:57.58 Okay, go ahead. 00:01:57.61\00:01:58.95 First time I ever step my foot in a campus. 00:01:58.98\00:02:00.32 And she asked me, 00:02:00.35\00:02:01.68 if I want to go to school there, 00:02:01.72\00:02:03.05 and I didn't mind, you know, 00:02:03.08\00:02:04.65 there's a lot of nice things to see at Oakwood. 00:02:04.69\00:02:06.29 I didn't mind the scenery, and weather was nice, 00:02:06.32\00:02:09.52 I figured why not. 00:02:09.56\00:02:10.96 And then I was out to high school. 00:02:10.99\00:02:13.19 I didn't really think I would end up down there, 00:02:13.23\00:02:15.26 but through prayer 00:02:15.30\00:02:17.20 and my mother's a God-fearing woman, 00:02:17.23\00:02:21.00 she prayed and the Lord heard her prayer, 00:02:21.04\00:02:23.24 I mean, as the enrollment process was going on, 00:02:23.27\00:02:25.84 I was helping young people 00:02:25.87\00:02:29.64 take their trunks and stuff into their rooms. 00:02:29.68\00:02:33.21 And she just kept coming back every time 00:02:33.25\00:02:36.02 I went to check on her, she would let me know, 00:02:36.05\00:02:38.95 "What would you think about this class 00:02:38.99\00:02:40.32 or what type of this or that or the other thing. 00:02:40.36\00:02:42.26 What do you want?" 00:02:42.29\00:02:43.63 Because I was 21 at the time. 00:02:43.66\00:02:45.46 I wouldn't have to stay in the freshman dorm, 00:02:45.49\00:02:47.66 I wouldn't have to stay in the upper classman dorm. 00:02:47.70\00:02:50.20 And the more she talked, 00:02:50.23\00:02:52.10 the more I started feeling 00:02:52.13\00:02:53.47 this sinking feeling in my stomach 00:02:53.50\00:02:55.17 like I might actually be here. 00:02:55.20\00:02:57.84 I had stuff still going on in DC there, 00:02:57.87\00:03:00.48 I wasn't that necessarily ready to let go off, 00:03:00.51\00:03:03.31 but long story short, I ended up at Oakwood. 00:03:03.35\00:03:08.05 So you're at Oakwood and you're studying what? 00:03:08.08\00:03:10.32 What are you gonna study? Theology. 00:03:10.35\00:03:12.02 My major was theology, minor was religion. 00:03:12.05\00:03:13.79 So you're at Oakwood 00:03:13.82\00:03:15.39 and this was not your intention, 00:03:15.42\00:03:17.39 but God moves kind of in a way 00:03:17.43\00:03:19.09 that you find yourself enrolled in theology classes 00:03:19.13\00:03:22.66 studying theology, studying religion. 00:03:22.70\00:03:25.27 Just tell me about 00:03:25.30\00:03:26.63 the first couple months on the campus. 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.00 Here you are now, 00:03:28.04\00:03:29.37 a place that you had no intention of being. 00:03:29.40\00:03:30.74 But feeling the strange tugging 00:03:30.77\00:03:32.74 from the Holy Spirit to be here, 00:03:32.77\00:03:34.41 and you're on campus now studying theology, 00:03:34.44\00:03:36.18 tell us about that? 00:03:36.21\00:03:37.61 That feeling was unreal. 00:03:37.65\00:03:38.98 It was so many spirit-filled individuals 00:03:39.01\00:03:43.08 that I've never been around, a group of people 00:03:43.12\00:03:44.82 who were so connected with Christ 00:03:44.85\00:03:47.42 at such a young age. 00:03:47.46\00:03:48.92 And I'm used to being around, you know, guys on the street, 00:03:48.96\00:03:51.56 who could care less about 00:03:51.59\00:03:52.93 church or the Lord or anything else, 00:03:52.96\00:03:54.30 but these people take a genuine interest in you, 00:03:54.33\00:03:57.97 who you're as a person. 00:03:58.00\00:03:59.90 You know, the Holy Spirit using them to talk to me, 00:03:59.93\00:04:02.80 letting me know that God has a plan for your life, 00:04:02.84\00:04:04.64 He's not finished with you yet. 00:04:04.67\00:04:06.21 So what did you feel that plan was? 00:04:06.24\00:04:07.61 At this moment, at this moment, what do you feel? 00:04:07.64\00:04:09.31 You're on Oakwood's campus, you're studying theology, 00:04:09.34\00:04:11.41 what did you feel at that moment 00:04:11.45\00:04:12.78 was God's plan for you life? 00:04:12.81\00:04:14.32 I wasn't really sure. 00:04:14.35\00:04:15.78 I wanted to feel like 00:04:15.82\00:04:17.15 I was being called to be a preacher, 00:04:17.19\00:04:19.32 but I didn't feel like 00:04:19.35\00:04:22.22 that's what I was being called to be. 00:04:22.26\00:04:23.59 You didn't feel like preacher material? 00:04:23.63\00:04:24.96 I didn't feel like preacher material. 00:04:24.99\00:04:26.33 I didn't see myself on a pulpit. 00:04:26.36\00:04:27.70 So you spent about a semester at Oakwood, right? 00:04:27.73\00:04:30.43 About a semester and a half. 00:04:30.47\00:04:31.80 And so you end up leaving and you're back in DC. 00:04:31.83\00:04:36.27 Now you had already told us that you had some friends 00:04:36.30\00:04:38.84 and some things that you were doing in DC 00:04:38.87\00:04:40.58 that you didn't want to let go off 00:04:40.61\00:04:41.94 so you're back in DC. 00:04:41.98\00:04:43.31 After knowing that God has a plan for your life, 00:04:43.35\00:04:45.45 having studied theology, and now you're back in DC, 00:04:45.48\00:04:48.18 tell us about that transition back 00:04:48.22\00:04:50.15 into a kind of in the old way of life 00:04:50.19\00:04:52.92 before you went to Oakwood? 00:04:52.95\00:04:54.49 It is interesting you asked that 00:04:54.52\00:04:55.86 because I found myself trying to find 00:04:55.89\00:04:59.39 and rekindle old friendships that have been laid to rest, 00:04:59.43\00:05:03.67 and the individuals really wanted nothing to do with me. 00:05:03.70\00:05:06.74 But, you know, I'm like, now I mean, this is me, 00:05:06.77\00:05:09.87 you know, I'm back. 00:05:09.90\00:05:11.24 Right, right, right, right. I'm not at school no more. 00:05:11.27\00:05:12.61 So wait a minute. 00:05:12.64\00:05:13.98 So your street friends are now kind of seeing 00:05:14.01\00:05:15.54 that there is something 00:05:15.58\00:05:16.91 just a little bit different about you 00:05:16.95\00:05:18.28 and they don't want anything to do with you. 00:05:18.31\00:05:19.65 Exactly. I had a similar experience. 00:05:19.68\00:05:22.28 I went through something 00:05:22.32\00:05:23.65 where I would go back to my old life, 00:05:23.69\00:05:26.15 you know, trying to... 00:05:26.19\00:05:27.52 I remember when I had stopped smoking, 00:05:27.56\00:05:28.96 stopped drinking 00:05:28.99\00:05:30.33 and I had become a Christian, a baptized Christian. 00:05:30.36\00:05:33.09 And I found myself in a very dark place 00:05:33.13\00:05:34.73 where I started looking for my old friends 00:05:34.76\00:05:36.67 to do some of the old things with me, 00:05:36.70\00:05:38.87 and they would say, 00:05:38.90\00:05:40.24 "Pastor Johns, what are you doing? 00:05:40.27\00:05:42.17 You can't do those things." 00:05:42.20\00:05:43.54 And I wasn't even like a pastor really at the time 00:05:43.57\00:05:45.27 but they would not allow me to digress, 00:05:45.31\00:05:48.44 if you will, to my old way of life. 00:05:48.48\00:05:50.55 And they held me in such high esteem 00:05:50.58\00:05:52.45 that they would be like, if I would say, 00:05:52.48\00:05:53.82 I want to smoke or something, they would be like, 00:05:53.85\00:05:55.48 "No, you can't do that. 00:05:55.52\00:05:56.85 No, I can't do that with you." 00:05:56.89\00:05:58.22 So you're at back in DC 00:05:58.25\00:05:59.59 and experiencing that to some degree 00:05:59.62\00:06:01.12 where people are saying, 00:06:01.16\00:06:02.49 "No, no, no, no, you can't be around us." 00:06:02.52\00:06:04.53 Not so much the individuals in DC, 00:06:04.56\00:06:07.50 but some of my closer friends, I just felt out of place. 00:06:07.53\00:06:12.07 I remember the night I got back up town 00:06:12.10\00:06:14.30 to Northwest from Oakwood, 00:06:14.34\00:06:16.60 you know, my brothers were... 00:06:16.64\00:06:17.97 I remember they were like just I'm not gonna... 00:06:18.01\00:06:19.97 They went to Yard, it was... 00:06:20.01\00:06:22.34 Everything was there... Whatever, yeah. 00:06:22.38\00:06:24.48 And, you know, I'm in a good mood, 00:06:24.51\00:06:26.95 I'm smiling and I look at myself in the mirror 00:06:26.98\00:06:29.15 and I just looked different, 00:06:29.18\00:06:30.52 you know, like the glow was there, 00:06:30.55\00:06:31.89 but my eyes were starting to squint, again, 00:06:31.92\00:06:34.12 my face was starting to ball back up. 00:06:34.16\00:06:36.79 And I remember distinctly hearing 00:06:36.83\00:06:38.46 the Holy Spirit telling me to hold on. 00:06:38.49\00:06:40.26 You know what I'm saying, 00:06:40.30\00:06:41.63 but like it was known I'm about to fall, 00:06:41.66\00:06:43.00 I'm about to be down for little bit, 00:06:43.03\00:06:44.83 you're going to get back up. 00:06:44.87\00:06:46.97 You got into a block 00:06:47.00\00:06:48.34 and it's like three different groups of people talking 00:06:48.37\00:06:50.07 and I'm standing, they're feeling like, 00:06:50.11\00:06:51.44 I'm completely by myself. 00:06:51.47\00:06:54.11 And I recall looking over the city skyline, 00:06:54.14\00:06:56.01 I can see like it was yesterday, 00:06:56.04\00:06:57.38 and it was like I saw a figure over top of the houses 00:06:57.41\00:07:01.88 were like a puppeteer's string. 00:07:01.92\00:07:03.25 My Lord. 00:07:03.28\00:07:04.62 And all the groups of people 00:07:04.65\00:07:05.99 were just having their various conversations, 00:07:06.02\00:07:07.36 all talking about nothing, frameless conversations. 00:07:07.39\00:07:08.72 I'm sitting there looking them like... 00:07:08.76\00:07:10.36 After coming from such spirit-filled people, 00:07:10.39\00:07:12.83 being around such spirit-filled people, 00:07:12.86\00:07:15.90 it was just like, "Why am I back here?" 00:07:15.93\00:07:17.70 So you're contrasting 00:07:17.73\00:07:19.07 the Holy Spirit-filled people with... 00:07:19.10\00:07:20.44 Right. I mean. 00:20:57.02\00:20:59.25 Believe it or not, our viewers have no view, 00:20:59.29\00:21:01.82 they don't understand that. 00:21:01.86\00:21:03.19 The people watching, they don't understand 00:21:03.22\00:21:04.56 being in custody, 00:21:04.59\00:21:05.93 already having all of your clothes off 00:21:05.96\00:21:07.70 and now having to fight just to keep on your underwear, 00:21:07.73\00:21:10.43 explain that, what is that like? 00:21:10.47\00:21:11.80 Two officers grabbed my arms, two officers grabbed my legs, 00:21:11.83\00:21:14.14 and the little dude that was doing all the talk, 00:21:14.17\00:21:15.60 he get to pulling my clothes off. 00:21:15.64\00:21:17.31 So I'm saying, 00:21:17.34\00:21:18.87 all types of disrespectful stuff to him 00:21:18.91\00:21:20.48 about his sexual preference 00:21:20.51\00:21:22.14 because apparently something is wrong with him. 00:21:22.18\00:21:23.51 We understand. 00:21:23.55\00:21:24.88 And he is still pulling my clothes. 00:21:24.91\00:21:27.85 And they didn't want to do anything with my clothes 00:21:27.88\00:21:30.02 'cause they just set them outside the cell, 00:21:30.05\00:21:31.45 they didn't take them to search them, 00:21:31.49\00:21:32.82 they just wanted me not to have them, 00:21:32.85\00:21:34.19 it was cold in there. 00:21:34.22\00:21:35.56 Right, right. That was a... Humiliation. 00:21:35.59\00:21:37.33 So we get down to my underwear 00:21:37.36\00:21:39.06 and I think I might have hit one of the officers 00:21:39.09\00:21:41.16 because I'm like, 00:21:41.20\00:21:42.53 "Man, you're not taking my underwear, man, 00:21:42.56\00:21:44.20 you're not tripping." 00:21:44.23\00:21:45.57 So I got myself away from him 00:21:45.60\00:21:47.04 and like I said they stepped back and looked at me. 00:21:47.07\00:21:48.80 I pulled my underwear and I looked at him, 00:21:48.84\00:21:50.17 I'm like, "Man, what?" 00:21:50.21\00:21:51.54 They were like, "Yeah." Did laugh and he left. 00:21:51.57\00:21:53.14 So I reached underneath the door bars, 00:21:53.17\00:21:54.88 and grabbed my clothes, and pulled my clothes back 00:21:54.91\00:21:56.34 and then put my clothes back on. 00:21:56.38\00:21:57.71 Nobody else came back in there, trying to take anything. 00:21:57.75\00:21:59.18 But they just want to see 00:21:59.21\00:22:00.55 how far that you're going to let them go. 00:22:00.58\00:22:01.92 Right, right. 00:22:01.95\00:22:03.28 If I had let them take my underwear, 00:22:03.32\00:22:04.65 I would have been sitting there naked, 00:22:04.69\00:22:06.02 you know what I'm saying, looking like Kunta Kinte 00:22:06.05\00:22:07.39 or some slave. 00:22:07.42\00:22:08.76 I mean, that's what they want. Right, right. 00:22:08.79\00:22:10.13 Okay, so now this is the process, 00:22:10.16\00:22:12.13 this is the situation, you find yourself in 2011. 00:22:12.16\00:22:15.63 Now and you're fighting these charges, 00:22:15.66\00:22:18.37 you're fighting all of these charges, 00:22:18.40\00:22:20.10 and tell us about that process 00:22:20.14\00:22:22.40 because what I really want to highlight here is 00:22:22.44\00:22:25.31 about you were charged in 2011 00:22:25.34\00:22:29.11 but you weren't sentenced until when? 00:22:29.14\00:22:33.38 2012. 2012. 00:22:33.42\00:22:35.02 So from 2011, 00:22:35.05\00:22:36.38 where you're already hitting the charges are there, 00:22:36.42\00:22:38.12 you're going back and forth of the court. 00:22:38.15\00:22:39.69 When this should be speeding you were caught 00:22:39.72\00:22:41.96 with the open container or with the alcohol, 00:22:41.99\00:22:45.13 you were caught with the marijuana, 00:22:45.16\00:22:46.76 you were caught with the different bundles 00:22:46.80\00:22:48.13 of marijuana in your pocket. 00:22:48.16\00:22:49.70 You're obviously inebriating, you're on the side of the road, 00:22:49.73\00:22:51.67 could've caused bodily harms to yourself and other people. 00:22:51.70\00:22:55.04 But you have not been convicted 00:22:55.07\00:22:56.91 even though the case is open close. 00:22:56.94\00:22:59.44 Why have you not been convicted, 00:22:59.47\00:23:01.08 even though this is a open shut... 00:23:01.11\00:23:03.01 This is not even something that a judge has to hear. 00:23:03.04\00:23:05.48 I mean, the judge could probably look at this and say, 00:23:05.51\00:23:07.68 "Okay, yeah, this man needs to go to jail, 00:23:07.72\00:23:09.92 and he needs to go as soon as possible 00:23:09.95\00:23:11.29 because he is a harm to himself and possibly to others." 00:23:11.32\00:23:13.99 You're driving on the freeway, the 495, you're drunk, 00:23:14.02\00:23:16.62 they find you on the side of the road, 00:23:16.66\00:23:17.99 you don't even know how you got there. 00:23:18.03\00:23:19.86 So this is an open shut case, but for some reason, 00:23:19.89\00:23:23.67 your sentence is deferred for almost a year? 00:23:23.70\00:23:26.80 There is some change, about a year and half. 00:23:26.84\00:23:28.40 So I want to say what is God trying to do 00:23:28.44\00:23:32.97 or what happens in this year that you can look back 00:23:33.01\00:23:35.48 and see the fingerprints of God in this situation. 00:23:35.51\00:23:38.31 God was waking me up. Waking you up. 00:23:38.35\00:23:40.18 He was waking me up and He constantly let me know 00:23:40.22\00:23:43.95 that not only would He never leave me or forsake me, 00:23:43.99\00:23:47.06 but He is going to save me from a far off. 00:23:47.09\00:23:51.43 I mean, I wrote down a couple of texts 00:23:51.46\00:23:53.40 when we left the Oakwood scene but throughout the year, 00:23:53.43\00:23:58.80 you know, I counted my blessings. 00:23:58.83\00:24:01.57 Some personal situations happened 00:24:01.60\00:24:03.71 in beginning of 2011, 00:24:03.74\00:24:06.88 that kind of pushed me mentally backwards 00:24:06.91\00:24:12.28 and I stopped going to church. 00:24:12.31\00:24:16.55 But through minister Ronnie Wanderhose, 00:24:16.58\00:24:20.72 you know, going and sitting in a council with him, 00:24:20.76\00:24:23.66 he introduced me to, verbally, one pastor Marquise Johns, 00:24:23.69\00:24:29.60 who I should go check out at Metropolitan church. 00:24:29.63\00:24:32.97 And I came here one Wednesday night, 00:24:33.00\00:24:34.67 you know, knowing prayer meeting 00:24:34.70\00:24:36.50 didn't start till 7:30, I got here by 6:30 00:24:36.54\00:24:39.04 and trying to open the door and it wasn't open. 00:24:39.07\00:24:41.71 So I left, you know, 00:24:41.74\00:24:43.45 with no real intention of coming back 00:24:43.48\00:24:45.88 because the door should've been open 00:24:45.91\00:24:47.62 when I came, but it wasn't. 00:24:47.65\00:24:49.52 So maybe a week or two went by, and constantly battling, 00:24:49.55\00:24:54.02 but I wasn't reading like that, 00:24:54.06\00:24:55.46 I felt like I couldn't pray, I couldn't pray. 00:24:55.49\00:24:57.99 Whenever I got on my knees to pray, 00:24:58.03\00:24:59.36 my mind was always bombarding with a bunch of nonsense. 00:24:59.39\00:25:02.53 I just thanked the Lord for that last night, 00:25:02.56\00:25:04.90 I prayed for about maybe 35-40 minutes 00:25:04.93\00:25:07.44 just talking to God, preparing myself immensely 00:25:07.47\00:25:10.04 for what I had to deal with on tomorrow, 00:25:10.07\00:25:12.81 but thanking Him for, 00:25:12.84\00:25:15.24 you know, allowing me the opportunity 00:25:15.28\00:25:16.88 to still be able to talk to him 00:25:16.91\00:25:18.45 because He could have been like, 00:25:18.48\00:25:19.91 "Man, you know what, 00:25:19.95\00:25:21.28 you want to keep playing with Me? 00:25:21.32\00:25:22.95 Man, I'm not a toy and just push me to the side." 00:25:22.98\00:25:25.05 But He didn't. 00:25:25.09\00:25:26.42 Long suffering.
