Okay. 00:03:18.98\00:03:21.46 So not only do you want to list your job duties, 00:03:21.49\00:03:24.55 you also want to list how effective you were 00:03:24.58\00:03:27.64 in those various positions that you held. 00:03:27.67\00:03:31.15 One of the key things are called Key Words. 00:03:31.18\00:03:34.07 Key Words are words that the hiring manager 00:03:34.10\00:03:37.67 tells the computer to look for. 00:03:37.70\00:03:40.73 For example, if I am hiring someone 00:03:40.76\00:03:43.94 who I want them to type 80 wpm 00:03:43.97\00:03:46.58 and I tell the computer to find anyone... 00:03:46.61\00:03:52.04 who has typed 80 wpm and send their resume to me. 00:03:52.07\00:03:57.08 So the computer will turnaround and if you have 60 wpm, 00:03:57.11\00:04:01.53 the manger will never ever, ever see your resume. 00:04:01.56\00:04:04.93 So key words are important 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.36 and the way you find those key words 00:04:06.39\00:04:08.53 are built into the job description 00:04:08.56\00:04:10.85 that the hiring manger has the job opening for. 00:04:10.88\00:04:13.84 Okay. 00:04:13.87\00:04:14.92 Now as a little side note I want to do this. 00:04:14.95\00:04:17.30 You know many times when people are filling out 00:04:17.33\00:04:19.53 job applications or trying to fill out a resume, 00:04:19.56\00:04:22.38 you know they always want 00:04:22.41\00:04:24.14 what some of the previous jobs that you've held. 00:04:24.17\00:04:26.71 How is it, is it important to stay at one job 00:04:26.74\00:04:30.40 for a long time? 00:04:30.43\00:04:31.49 Case in point, I've tried to go for job interviews 00:04:31.52\00:04:34.11 many a different times years ago, 00:04:34.14\00:04:36.66 and I will put on there 00:04:36.69\00:04:38.01 okay, I've only worked at this job three months, 00:04:38.04\00:04:40.38 only worked at this job for a month. 00:04:40.41\00:04:42.09 I'd never really worked at a job 00:04:42.12\00:04:43.57 longer than three months. 00:04:43.60\00:04:44.88 How hard is to get a job if you only stay at a job 00:04:44.91\00:04:48.93 may be one month, two months, three months? 00:06:50.74\00:06:52.51 Right, it's not appropriate. Absolutely. 00:07:01.16\00:07:02.92 Okay, that's a good practice, good practice. 00:07:02.95\00:07:04.44 Also in your core topics 00:07:04.47\00:07:05.99 you have standard interview question, what is that? 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.32 Okay, there are-- there is a difference, 00:07:08.35\00:07:10.88 there is a standard interview 00:07:10.91\00:07:12.72 and there is a structured interview. 00:07:12.75\00:07:14.54 A standard interview is normally a one-on-one 00:07:14.57\00:07:17.59 between the applicant and the hiring manager. 00:07:17.62\00:07:20.91 A structured interview may have 00:07:20.94\00:07:23.34 three or four people asking questions. 00:07:23.37\00:07:26.72 And there are normally people, you have the hiring manager, 00:07:26.75\00:07:30.19 then you'll have another manger from that organization 00:07:30.22\00:07:34.90 you may have a human resources representative 00:07:34.93\00:07:38.13 and so you walk into the office going for your interview 00:07:38.16\00:07:42.78 thinking you're gonna interview one-on-one 00:07:42.81\00:07:45.60 and then you're looking, 00:07:45.63\00:07:47.57 and it's a panel. 00:07:47.60\00:07:48.91 And it's just absolutely horrifying 00:07:48.94\00:07:51.32 if you're not accustomed to it 00:07:51.35\00:07:53.13 or if you don't know anything about it. 00:07:53.16\00:07:55.08 So we talk about that. Okay. 00:07:55.11\00:07:56.60 How can a person adjust to that? 00:07:56.63\00:07:57.98 If they're expecting to come into a interview 00:07:58.01\00:08:00.87 and they're expecting one-on-one and they walk in 00:08:00.90\00:08:04.38 and their mouth drops to the floor 00:08:04.41\00:08:06.04 because there's four or five people there. 00:08:06.07\00:08:07.88 It's almost like a panel discussion. 00:08:07.91\00:08:09.83 What can a person do? 00:08:09.86\00:08:11.65 You need to take a deep breath because it's gonna show... 00:08:11.68\00:08:16.01 and then the questions are structured to the point 00:08:16.04\00:08:18.96 where they give you a example they'll say, 00:08:18.99\00:08:21.48 tell me a time when you were effective doing this? 00:08:21.51\00:08:25.70 Or tell me a time when you did not do something 00:08:25.73\00:08:28.95 that you were supposed to do? 00:08:28.98\00:08:30.30 So they're very structured and they give points. 00:08:30.33\00:08:34.31 Everybody is writing points. 00:08:34.34\00:08:36.05 So what you need to do is take a deep breath 00:08:36.08\00:08:38.56 and if you basically have practice 00:08:38.59\00:08:41.49 and you know exactly what you're gonna say, 00:08:41.52\00:08:44.23 not a problem. 00:08:44.26\00:08:45.29 It should be okay. 00:11:02.24\00:11:03.83 And I want to do that by starting 00:11:03.86\00:11:05.15 with a particular story. 00:11:05.18\00:11:06.95 You know, I remember when I was about I think 17, 18 years old. 00:11:06.98\00:11:10.55 I was 18 years old 00:11:10.58\00:11:12.06 and I went to a home depot in Dallas, Texas 00:11:12.09\00:11:15.19 to try to get a job. 00:11:15.22\00:11:16.63 Good job paying $10 an hour. 00:11:16.66\00:11:18.54 You know, I thought this was great. 00:11:18.57\00:11:20.00 I filled out the application and as I was going there, 00:11:20.03\00:11:23.63 I actually got called back for an interview, 00:11:23.66\00:11:25.29 you know, which is great news. 00:11:25.32\00:11:26.49 Here I'm 18 years old, they're paying $10 an hour. 00:11:26.52\00:11:28.64 I thought that was, you know, great news. 00:11:28.67\00:11:30.56 Since I've been used to or accustomed to 00:11:30.59\00:11:32.72 working in like fast food places, 00:11:32.75\00:11:34.57 you know minimum wage $5 an hour things like that. 00:11:34.60\00:11:37.34 I said that was great. 00:11:37.37\00:11:38.63 Now one thing about it is, 00:11:38.66\00:11:41.11 you know, on my application it asked, 00:11:41.14\00:11:43.09 had you been convicted of a crime 00:11:43.12\00:11:44.85 within the last seven years? 00:11:44.88\00:11:46.52 Now on that I put, will explain in interview, okay. 00:11:46.55\00:11:50.08 So I kind of learned throughout the years not to put 00:11:50.11\00:11:53.14 yes, I've been convicted of 00:11:53.17\00:11:54.21 such and such, such and such. 00:11:54.24\00:11:55.96 Because people tend to say, well, you know what, 00:11:55.99\00:11:57.85 I'm not even going to hired him 00:11:57.88\00:11:59.03 without them talking to you to see what you're about. 00:11:59.06\00:12:01.86 So anyhow I went for this particular interview, excited. 00:12:01.89\00:12:05.03 And as I was talking to the, to the manager about the job, 00:12:05.06\00:12:08.85 he told me something important, when we got to the, 00:12:08.88\00:12:11.82 got to the section about the crime. 00:12:11.85\00:12:13.79 I began to explain to him what it was, 00:12:13.82\00:12:16.46 you know what degree it was, what kind of crime I committed, 00:12:16.49\00:12:19.22 how much time I served. 00:12:19.25\00:12:20.83 And, you know, he said because your crime involves 00:12:20.86\00:12:24.30 stealing something. 00:12:24.33\00:12:25.62 It was breaking, dealing with breaking in the homes, 00:12:25.65\00:12:27.92 we can't hire you for this job. 00:12:27.95\00:12:29.85 You know we're working with different things 00:12:29.88\00:12:31.65 that you could steal at anytime. 00:12:31.68\00:12:33.52 And he said, you know what? 00:12:33.55\00:12:34.81 You cannot work here, we can't hire you here. 00:12:34.84\00:12:37.17 But he did say something else. 00:12:37.20\00:12:38.61 He said, you know what? 00:12:38.64\00:12:40.10 Though you have that crime if you had a drug charge, 00:12:40.13\00:12:43.51 we could hire you, if you had a drug charge. 00:12:43.54\00:12:46.19 And I thought to myself, well, you know what? 00:12:46.22\00:12:48.06 May be I should go out there and sell drugs 00:12:48.09\00:12:49.66 and catch a drug charge, 00:12:49.69\00:12:50.82 may be I have a better chance to getting a job, 00:12:50.85\00:12:53.15 which you know, that's not good either. 00:12:53.18\00:12:55.05 So I want to know is there certain kinds of jobs 00:12:55.08\00:12:58.64 which are based upon a person's crime, 00:12:58.67\00:13:01.24 it's best not to look for? 00:13:01.27\00:13:03.47 Oh, absolutely. Okay. 00:13:03.50\00:13:05.18 Just by the mere fact that you have a felony. 00:13:05.21\00:13:08.40 There're certain companies 00:13:08.43\00:13:09.66 that you will not be able to work for. 00:13:09.69\00:13:12.73 And you need to know those companies, 00:13:12.76\00:13:14.49 but there're also felony friendly organizations 00:13:14.52\00:13:18.22 that hire people and it's, of course it's a challenge, 00:13:18.25\00:13:22.45 but you should always tell the truth. 00:13:22.48\00:13:25.49 I think you should be truthful because the company, 00:13:25.52\00:13:28.53 the perspective company is spending money 00:13:28.56\00:13:31.39 and they're trusting you 00:13:31.42\00:13:32.81 as well as you're trusting them to pay you. 00:13:32.84\00:13:35.67 So I think that you should always be honest, 00:13:35.70\00:13:38.04 but there will be road blocks there 00:13:38.07\00:13:40.64 that you just have to open up. 00:13:40.67\00:13:42.02 And that's where that determination and perseverance 00:13:42.05\00:13:43.92 plays such a big key. 00:13:43.95\00:13:45.29 Because something like that which I thought 00:13:45.32\00:13:46.93 was a fantastic job, you know $10 an hour. 00:13:46.96\00:13:49.83 But he told me no. Couldn't keep me there. 00:15:38.52\00:15:40.90 So how important is it for a person 00:15:40.93\00:15:43.55 to tell the truth on their application? 00:15:43.58\00:15:46.76 I think it's extremely important 00:15:46.79\00:15:48.80 because it deals with your integrity, 00:15:48.83\00:15:51.48 who you are as an individual. 00:15:51.51\00:15:53.21 Okay, what if a person has no integrity? 00:15:53.24\00:15:55.32 Then that's an issue.
