00:03:21.32\00:03:23.05 Absolutely. 00:03:23.08\00:03:24.14 What we do is we customize the youth program 00:03:24.17\00:03:28.00 to address issues like money management-- 00:03:28.03\00:03:30.59 That's needed. 00:03:30.62\00:03:31.66 We also provide for them, an opportunity 00:03:31.69\00:03:34.13 to take their non-working experience and create resumes. 00:03:34.16\00:03:38.52 And we also show them how to interview. 00:03:38.55\00:03:41.03 Because they, too, will be interviewing for colleges 00:03:41.06\00:03:43.92 and various and sundry organizations 00:03:43.95\00:03:46.43 that they try to be involved in. 00:03:46.46\00:03:49.72 Now I want to focus a little bit 00:03:49.75\00:03:50.98 on the job readiness program. 00:03:51.01\00:03:52.88 Very, very important. 00:03:52.91\00:03:55.08 Tell the viewers about the program 00:03:55.11\00:03:56.55 and what it provides, 00:03:56.58\00:03:57.61 what does this job readiness program provide? 00:03:57.64\00:03:59.81 Okay, our job readiness program is primarily set up through 00:03:59.84\00:04:04.50 what is called workshops. 00:04:04.53\00:04:06.63 And basically what it is, is that we deal with issues 00:04:06.66\00:04:10.45 such as resume building, 00:04:10.48\00:04:12.54 we talk about interviewing techniques and skills. 00:04:12.57\00:04:16.16 We also talk about building your resume 00:04:16.19\00:04:19.84 so it's an effective resume, 00:04:19.87\00:04:22.03 how not to put your picture up there 00:04:22.06\00:04:24.15 and not to do borders and things like that. 00:04:24.18\00:04:26.86 And so we also talk about the importance of 00:04:26.89\00:04:30.68 perseverance and determination. 00:04:30.71\00:04:33.02 Because those are real issues, those are real issues, 00:04:33.05\00:04:35.97 especially in this environment. 00:04:36.00\00:04:38.20 To give you a statistic, in the state of California, 00:04:38.23\00:04:41.62 based on the Labor Board, as of April of this year, 00:04:41.65\00:04:47.12 the US unemployment rate was exactly 9%, 00:04:47.15\00:04:51.14 in the state of California, 11.9%. 00:04:51.17\00:04:54.87 So people living in California absolutely need to have 00:04:54.90\00:04:58.97 determination and perseverance 00:04:59.00\00:05:01.70 in order to be effective in finding employment. 00:05:01.73\00:05:04.60 Okay, you know, that's so key, determination and perseverance, 00:05:04.63\00:05:07.38 that's interesting that you should mention that 00:05:07.41\00:05:09.16 because, you know, many times you see people 00:05:09.19\00:05:11.44 that lack motivation, they lack determination, 00:05:11.47\00:05:14.34 they lack perseverance, and so often it takes that 00:05:14.37\00:05:17.54 to be able to accomplish something. 00:05:17.57\00:05:19.32 Case in point, I know somebody that just got released 00:05:19.35\00:05:22.23 from incarceration, 3 year sentence, 00:05:22.26\00:05:24.19 about a month ago or so. 00:05:24.22\00:05:26.05 And, you know, it's hard getting a job. 00:05:26.08\00:05:27.94 Got trades while he was incarcerated, 00:05:27.97\00:05:30.33 but even coming out, it was still real difficult. 00:05:30.36\00:05:33.42 And a lot of times even in his instance, you know, 00:05:33.45\00:05:37.08 it was so easy to lack that determination, 00:05:37.11\00:05:39.79 that motivation to be able to, you know, 00:05:39.82\00:05:42.85 get up, get out there, and actually look for something 00:05:42.88\00:05:45.18 instead of just waiting on folks to call. 00:05:45.21\00:05:47.59 You know, we tend to say, 00:05:47.62\00:05:49.92 "Okay, well, I'm gonna go fill out some applications." 00:05:49.95\00:05:51.98 We go there to the job, we fill out the application, 00:05:52.01\00:05:54.51 and then instead of going out and looking for more, 00:05:54.54\00:05:57.45 we just sit down and we kind of wait for, 00:05:57.48\00:05:59.91 you know, the ones we filled out to give us a call. 00:05:59.94\00:06:02.05 So determination and perseverance 00:06:02.08\00:06:03.93 are very key, aren't they? 00:06:03.96\00:06:05.05 They absolutely are. 00:06:05.08\00:06:06.15 And what I'm discovering is the mindset of people 00:06:06.18\00:06:10.10 has not changed although the environment has changed. 00:06:10.13\00:06:13.23 Having a-- looking for a job is like having a job. 00:06:13.26\00:06:16.44 Okay, it is. 00:06:16.47\00:06:17.51 You work 12 hour day, you're doing your research, 00:06:17.54\00:06:20.27 you're looking at your weaknesses and your strengths, 00:06:20.30\00:06:23.66 you're looking at what you have done, 00:06:23.69\00:06:26.15 and you try to mesh all of those elements together. 00:06:26.18\00:06:29.80 And it is a 12 hour job. 00:06:29.83\00:06:32.08 Oh, yes. Absolutely. 00:06:32.11\00:06:33.15 Looking for a job becomes a job, 00:06:33.18\00:06:34.85 but you're just not getting paid for looking for the job. 00:06:34.88\00:06:36.94 Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:06:36.97\00:06:38.69 That's pretty interesting. 00:06:38.72\00:06:40.09 What's your thoughts on a person 00:06:40.12\00:06:41.67 that cannot find a paying job immediately? 00:06:41.70\00:06:44.50 They may be getting out of incarceration 00:06:44.53\00:06:46.59 or maybe they just haven't worked in a long time. 00:06:46.62\00:06:48.72 What's something else or some other things 00:06:48.75\00:06:50.65 that they can do if they cannot find employment immediately? 00:06:50.68\00:06:54.13 I think the first thing people need to do 00:06:54.16\00:06:56.94 is to assess their weaknesses and their strengths. 00:06:56.97\00:07:00.04 What they can do and what they cannot do. 00:07:00.07\00:07:02.81 Certainly if you've been incarcerated you have 00:07:02.84\00:07:05.55 a greater barrier than other people, 00:07:05.58\00:07:07.79 but that does not mean that you cannot find employment. 00:07:07.82\00:07:11.35 I think that that person also needs to be able to understand 00:07:11.38\00:07:16.07 that there are some companies that they won't be able 00:07:16.10\00:07:18.99 to apply for employment. 00:07:19.02\00:07:20.79 But there are felony friendly companies. 00:07:20.82\00:07:24.06 But they have to research that, in their area. 00:07:24.09\00:07:27.45 They should also volunteer instead of sitting there 00:07:27.48\00:07:30.16 waiting for "Please, please, pick up the phone, 00:07:30.19\00:07:32.55 call me, call me for a job." 00:07:32.58\00:07:34.18 You need to go out and help others. 00:07:34.21\00:07:36.19 Because it takes away from the psychological stress 00:07:36.22\00:07:39.87 of having to be persevering and determination 00:07:39.90\00:07:44.33 and, you know, getting rejected. 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.21 Okay, now, volunteering can be really good for the simple fact 00:07:46.24\00:07:50.91 that, you know, while they're looking for a job 00:07:50.94\00:07:53.20 they can be helping somebody out, somewhere. 00:07:53.23\00:07:55.63 A job may not be hiring, they can volunteer. 00:07:55.66\00:07:57.82 And, you know, a lot of times, 00:07:57.85\00:07:59.61 even though the job may not be hiring, 00:07:59.64\00:08:01.52 you never know when somebody's going to quit. 00:08:01.55\00:08:02.87 Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:08:02.90\00:08:03.93 You never know when somebody's going to get fired. 00:08:03.96\00:08:05.42 And people may say, "Okay, he's been volunteering for us 00:08:05.45\00:08:08.53 for a year now, or 6 months, 3 months," 00:08:08.56\00:08:10.93 whatever it may be, and say, 00:08:10.96\00:08:12.58 "You know what, he's been doing a great job. 00:08:12.61\00:08:14.90 He's been doing a real good job at what he's doing. 00:08:14.93\00:08:17.16 Let's go on and take him on." 00:08:17.19\00:08:18.54 You know, a lot of times-- Do you find that a lot of times 00:08:18.57\00:08:20.57 that people don't think about that, they don't think about, 00:08:20.60\00:08:23.09 you know, I can volunteer for 3 months 00:08:23.12\00:08:24.89 or whatever and then maybe they'll hire me on. 00:08:24.92\00:08:28.05 Absolutely, because you have a need, 00:08:28.08\00:08:30.13 you have financial need, you have the worries of the day. 00:08:30.16\00:08:33.62 But at the same time, because you have to endure 00:08:33.65\00:08:36.97 in this economy, 00:08:37.00\00:08:38.39 it is unrealistic for anyone to think, 00:08:38.42\00:08:40.87 whether you have a felony or not, 00:08:40.90\00:08:43.01 that you're going to get a job on the spot. 00:08:43.04\00:08:45.07 That's very rare. 00:08:45.10\00:08:46.25 So you have to have an action plan. 00:08:46.28\00:08:48.34 And I consider that to be one of the top action plans 00:08:48.37\00:08:51.27 while you're waiting. 00:08:51.30\00:08:52.34 Okay, I think that's very important, 00:08:52.37\00:08:53.41 you said an action plan. 00:08:53.44\00:08:54.65 Yes. 00:08:54.68\00:08:55.73 An action plan, a get-up-and-do plan, 00:08:55.76\00:08:57.47 you need to start formulating things in your mind, 00:08:57.50\00:08:59.53 writing things down, looking on the internet, 00:08:59.56\00:09:01.73 researching different things. 00:09:01.76\00:09:03.50 You know, it's so easy to kind of get comfortable, 00:09:03.53\00:09:06.06 and instead of even going out of your house 00:09:06.09\00:09:08.15 to look for a job, we find a number of the job 00:09:08.18\00:09:10.76 in the phone book, we call them up and say, 00:09:10.79\00:09:12.32 "Are you hiring? Are you hiring?" 00:09:12.35\00:09:14.37 And a lot of times what they say is, 00:09:14.40\00:09:16.06 "Well, just come down and ask." 00:09:16.09\00:09:17.57 And then when you get there they say, 00:09:17.60\00:09:19.07 "Well, we're not hiring, we're just accepting applications." 00:09:19.10\00:09:21.94 And then the person says, "Well, you know what, 00:09:21.97\00:09:23.94 I just wasted all my gas. 00:09:23.97\00:09:25.50 I just wasted all my time to get down here, 00:09:25.53\00:09:27.46 just to fill out application." 00:09:27.49\00:09:28.98 So it can be discouraging. 00:09:29.01\00:09:30.90 It can be discouraging at times but, you know, 00:09:30.93\00:09:34.00 as you as you stated, determination and perseverance 00:09:34.03\00:09:36.25 are so key in having that action plan. 00:09:36.28\00:09:38.84 Very, very important. 00:09:38.87\00:09:39.95 They're absolutely fundamental in order for you to succeed. 00:09:39.98\00:09:43.51 If you don't have it, you will fail. 00:09:43.54\00:09:45.27 Okay, all right. Absolutely. 00:09:45.30\00:09:47.00 How can each of these benefit people? 00:09:47.03\00:09:48.80 I want to throw some names out there, 00:09:48.83\00:09:51.66 how can each of these be beneficial to people? 00:09:51.69\00:09:54.08 Transitional housing. 00:09:54.11\00:09:55.47 Well, most of the time when people come 00:09:55.50\00:09:57.69 come organization and they say, 00:09:57.72\00:09:59.48 "Okay, I want to use your computers. 00:09:59.51\00:10:01.83 I'm looking for a job," and as the counselors do 00:10:01.86\00:10:05.64 one on one interviews they find out, 00:10:05.67\00:10:08.44 well, this person doesn't have a house to stay. 00:10:08.47\00:10:10.86 So therefore we connect with organizations 00:10:10.89\00:10:13.76 within the community and so we say, 00:10:13.79\00:10:16.05 "Okay, why don't you try calling this organization. 00:10:16.08\00:10:19.42 They may be able to help you to find housing." 00:10:19.45\00:10:22.33 Okay, that's great. 00:10:22.36\00:10:23.40 You know, it always does help when there's some kind of 00:10:23.43\00:10:25.45 support system there. 00:10:25.48\00:10:26.82 Because, you know, in the world, in America, 00:10:26.85\00:10:28.59 we do have homelessness and things like that, 00:10:28.62\00:10:30.78 and to be able to say, 00:10:30.81\00:10:32.02 "Look, I'm about to get out of prison, 00:10:32.05\00:10:33.33 I have nowhere to go. 00:10:33.36\00:10:35.11 You know, can I come to this half-way house? 00:10:35.14\00:10:37.34 Can I come to this shelter?" 00:10:37.37\00:10:38.71 Something to transition you back into society. 00:10:38.74\00:10:42.29 You know, I remember when I was in prison, 00:10:42.32\00:10:44.22 they had a program, it was entitled Project Rio. 00:10:44.25\00:10:47.17 And what it was, it would reintegrate people 00:10:47.20\00:10:49.63 back into society. 00:10:49.66\00:10:50.74 You would go there, you would learn job skills, 00:10:50.77\00:10:53.38 you would learn how to fill out an application, 00:10:53.41\00:10:56.22 what to put on a resume, things like that. 00:10:56.25\00:10:58.81 But, you know, even though they had something good, 00:10:58.84\00:11:00.79 offering something good, I noticed that some people 00:11:00.82\00:11:03.18 just didn't want to do it. 00:11:03.21\00:11:04.72 Some people just lacked that motivation, 00:11:04.75\00:11:06.54 some people lacked that desire to even want to do it 00:11:06.57\00:11:09.81 and would rather just sleep in their bunk all day 00:11:09.84\00:11:11.98 instead of actually, you know, 00:11:12.01\00:11:13.34 let me go to these classes, and let me try to do something. 00:11:13.37\00:11:17.00 Let me throw out another name for you, 00:11:17.03\00:11:18.46 substance abuse and mental health treatment centers. 00:11:18.49\00:11:21.75 There are people that come looking for a job 00:11:21.78\00:11:24.59 because they deem that that's the only problem 00:11:24.62\00:11:27.08 that they have. 00:11:27.11\00:11:28.51 But people have mental issues, 00:11:28.54\00:11:30.80 they have substance abuse issues, 00:11:30.83\00:11:34.24 they're homeless, so it's a pile-on 00:11:34.27\00:11:37.11 of many negative things. 00:11:37.14\00:11:38.95 So we try to ensure that these people have access 00:11:38.98\00:11:43.50 to as much as possible, if they want to utilize it. 00:11:43.53\00:11:46.98 Okay. 00:11:47.01\00:11:48.04 Now I know that substance abuse is very important, 00:11:48.07\00:11:50.18 now mental health is important, too. 00:11:50.21\00:11:52.16 But I know with the substance abuse, 00:11:52.19\00:11:53.40 a lot of jobs these days, 00:11:53.43\00:11:55.02 you have to give a urine sample, 00:11:55.05\00:11:56.76 whatever it may be, 00:11:56.79\00:11:58.12 to even get some of these jobs. 00:11:58.15\00:12:00.08 I remember, one time where I was going to go 00:12:00.11\00:12:03.21 try to do truck driving, drive an 18 wheeler, 00:12:03.24\00:12:05.90 little old me, gonna try to get behind the steering wheel 00:12:05.93\00:12:08.10 and drive an 18 wheeler. 00:12:08.13\00:12:09.45 Couldn't imagine it but, you know, 00:12:09.48\00:12:10.77 it seemed like a good job that maybe I could do. 00:12:10.80\00:12:13.22 And one of the main problems I was having is that 00:12:13.25\00:12:16.48 I was onto drugs, I was onto cocaine at the time, 00:12:16.51\00:12:19.17 I just could not find any week where I was just free 00:12:19.20\00:12:22.89 without the drugs in my system, 00:12:22.92\00:12:24.99 to be able to go down there and, you know, 00:12:25.02\00:12:27.56 give a clean urine sample, to be able to get that job. 00:12:27.59\00:12:30.24 So that's good that there's substance abuse classes 00:12:30.27\00:12:33.25 in place to let people know, 00:12:33.28\00:12:35.44 look, you need to get clean if you want a job. 00:12:35.47\00:12:38.11 If you want a real good job 00:12:38.14\00:12:39.84 you need to be able to get clean. 00:12:39.87\00:12:41.61 That's very important. 00:12:41.64\00:12:43.03 Another name for you, prevention program. 00:12:43.06\00:12:45.39 Any type of prevention program that any substance abuse 00:12:45.42\00:12:49.81 that anyone has, there are various 00:12:49.84\00:12:53.37 and so many prevention programs, 00:12:53.40\00:12:56.17 things that will stop anyone from being able 00:12:56.20\00:12:58.63 to be effective in the job market. 00:12:58.66\00:13:01.26 It could be a behavioral problem, 00:13:01.29\00:13:03.39 it could be a family issue problem, 00:13:03.42\00:13:07.72 any type of problem that you can think a human can have, 00:13:07.75\00:13:11.23 there are prevention programs out there. 00:13:11.26\00:13:13.80 Okay, that's great. That's great. 00:13:13.83\00:13:15.13 How about pre-release programs, 00:13:15.16\00:13:16.43 talk a little about pre-release programs. 00:13:16.46\00:13:18.02 Okay, we have-- there are several pre-release programs. 00:13:18.05\00:13:20.80 We have some specific for Orange County, 00:13:20.83\00:13:23.37 but they're nationwide. 00:13:23.40\00:13:25.07 All you have to do is look on any website 00:13:25.10\00:13:27.72 and put in pre-release programs, 00:13:27.75\00:13:30.41 and they can get information 00:13:30.44\00:13:32.32 specifically for their city and their county. 00:13:32.35\00:13:35.62 Okay, so it seems like to do anything 00:13:35.65\00:13:38.60 with coming out of prison 00:13:38.63\00:13:39.84 or even if not coming out of prison, 00:13:39.87\00:13:41.60 it requires some work. 00:13:41.63\00:13:42.88 Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:13:42.91\00:13:44.54 Okay, now we want to talk about vocational training. 00:13:44.57\00:13:47.08 Okay, we do as well 00:13:47.11\00:13:49.49 some soft skill computer training as well. 00:13:49.52\00:13:52.31 So vocational training, you can go to any of your local schools 00:13:52.34\00:13:58.11 and find out if they have night schools for adults. 00:13:58.14\00:14:01.36 You usually don't have to pay a very expensive cost to go in. 00:14:01.39\00:14:06.33 If I want to learn about typing better, 00:14:06.36\00:14:09.00 then I can call a local vocational school 00:14:09.03\00:14:12.19 or any high school and some of them have programs 00:14:12.22\00:14:15.14 where you can beef up your skills. 00:14:15.17\00:14:17.27 Okay, you know, that's so key 00:14:17.30\00:14:18.59 because we live in such a technological world now, 00:14:18.62\00:14:21.11 everything is computers, everything is iPads, iPods, 00:14:21.14\00:14:24.07 cell phones and being able to type, 00:14:24.10\00:14:27.36 simply just type, not even using the internet 00:14:27.39\00:14:29.64 is something very key, 00:14:29.67\00:14:30.95 because of the type of world we live in. 00:14:30.98\00:14:32.80 So we have vocational training. 00:14:32.83\00:14:34.55 You even learn how to get on the computer, 00:14:34.58\00:14:36.69 how to look up, how to do some job searching. 00:14:36.72\00:14:39.31 So you're actually learning some key things 00:14:39.34\00:14:41.19 in vocational training, right? 00:14:41.22\00:14:42.39 And those are known as soft skills, 00:14:42.42\00:14:44.29 when you get into Word and other programs. 00:14:44.32\00:14:47.85 Okay. That's a little bit higher. 00:14:47.88\00:14:50.26 Okay, now can it be difficult for a person 00:14:50.29\00:14:53.39 just starting on a computer? 00:14:53.42\00:14:55.06 I know for myself, you know, I just really got into 00:14:55.09\00:14:57.81 working with computers not too long ago, 00:14:57.84\00:14:59.68 a few years ago actually. 00:14:59.71\00:15:01.06 And, you know, trying to figure out the keyboard, 00:15:01.09\00:15:04.83 and trying to figure out what's the internet, 00:15:04.86\00:15:06.46 and trying figure out-- You know, it took me so long 00:15:06.49\00:15:08.10 just to even formulate a email address. 00:15:08.13\00:15:09.85 I couldn't understand a email address. 00:15:09.88\00:15:11.04 Right, right. 00:15:11.07\00:15:12.10 So can it be kind of difficult for a person to, you know, 00:15:12.14\00:15:15.70 sit down at a computer themselves 00:15:15.73\00:15:17.30 and figure this information out? 00:15:17.33\00:15:19.93 From my perspective, there is no difficulty. 00:15:19.96\00:15:22.78 If determination is there, you can do anything. 00:15:22.81\00:15:26.15 So you don't have those limitations. 00:15:26.18\00:15:28.71 Okay, and actually the Bible says, "I can do all things 00:15:28.74\00:15:30.85 through Christ who strengthens me." 00:15:30.88\00:15:32.18 Philippians 4:13. Right, absolutely, absolutely. 00:15:32.21\00:15:34.29 So the only limitation anyone has, 00:15:34.32\00:15:36.15 are those that they put on their selves. 00:15:36.18\00:15:37.79 They put on themselves. So, no, it's not difficult. 00:15:37.82\00:15:39.87 If you're determined to be better skill set, 00:15:39.90\00:15:43.05 you will sit there for hours. 00:15:43.08\00:15:45.06 Because most people do. 00:15:45.09\00:15:46.35 They sit there for hours looking on the internet 00:15:46.38\00:15:48.93 for a movie or whatever they do or Skype or other... 00:15:48.96\00:15:51.95 You're right. 00:15:51.98\00:15:53.01 So it's not difficult. 00:15:53.04\00:15:54.10 So it may not seem fun while looking for a job, 00:15:54.13\00:15:57.38 things like that, sitting there trying to learn the computer. 00:15:57.41\00:15:59.79 That may not be as fun as sitting back for 2, 3 hours 00:15:59.82\00:16:02.47 watching your favorite TV show or your favorite movie. 00:16:02.50\00:16:05.38 But if you want to succeed in life per se, 00:16:05.41\00:16:09.26 then you need to be able to develop 00:16:09.29\00:16:11.71 some of these kind of skills, right? 00:16:11.74\00:16:13.10 Absolutely, and you also need to understand 00:16:13.13\00:16:16.05 that life itself is a challenge. 00:16:16.08\00:16:17.77 Yeah, it is. 00:16:17.80\00:16:18.83 So you're never gonna be challenge free. 00:16:18.86\00:16:20.41 It's how you feel about the challenge 00:16:20.44\00:16:22.53 that you're having to deal with. 00:16:22.56\00:16:24.05 Amen, amen. 00:16:24.08\00:16:25.12 Now you have some statistics that you actually want to read. 00:16:25.15\00:16:28.00 Yes, I do. 00:16:28.03\00:16:29.10 If you could go to those statistics, 00:16:29.13\00:16:30.61 and I want you to read those very profoundly. 00:16:30.64\00:16:32.79 Provide that information for us. 00:16:32.82\00:16:34.33 Okay, the US Bureau of Justice statistics say, 00:16:34.36\00:16:38.15 "Nearly 2 million men and women and juvenile offenders 00:16:38.18\00:16:42.44 will be released over the next 3 years from federal, 00:16:42.47\00:16:45.53 state and local correctional facilities. 00:16:45.56\00:16:48.78 Without intervention more than 2/3rds of these individuals 00:16:48.81\00:16:53.14 will be rearrested for serious new felony offenses 00:16:53.17\00:16:57.34 within 3 years of their release. 00:16:57.37\00:17:00.09 With these statistics no one, no one organization 00:17:00.12\00:17:03.80 can possibly fit the bill and help everyone." 00:17:03.83\00:17:07.70 That is why I felt it was important for me to do 00:17:07.73\00:17:12.21 what I could do, so God could do what I could not do, 00:17:12.24\00:17:15.66 and provide some type of service for this target group. 00:17:15.69\00:17:19.19 Okay, you know, in that quote you just read 00:17:19.22\00:17:22.09 you said something about intervention. 00:17:22.12\00:17:23.76 Intervention is very, very important 00:17:23.79\00:17:26.24 to be able to get that needed help, that extra push. 00:17:26.27\00:17:29.31 With somebody taking the time to say, 00:17:29.34\00:17:31.22 "You know what, I'll help you get over the drugs." 00:17:31.25\00:17:33.03 That's why you have like AA, NA, different things like that. 00:17:33.06\00:17:36.57 And these will help people, 00:17:36.60\00:17:38.28 these will intervene to help them 00:17:38.31\00:17:39.96 get over some of these obstacles, 00:17:39.99\00:17:41.60 which are very important, aren't they? 00:17:41.63\00:17:42.86 They're very important. 00:17:42.89\00:17:43.94 And what we do is a case by case interview 00:17:43.97\00:17:48.03 with people if they're in agreement to that. 00:17:48.06\00:17:50.74 So we're able to distract various needs. 00:17:50.77\00:17:54.67 For people to be able to say, 00:17:54.70\00:17:56.81 "Okay, I need a job, but there's something else. 00:17:56.84\00:17:59.87 I have a felony." 00:17:59.90\00:18:01.20 We can help you with that. 00:18:01.23\00:18:02.89 I don't have housing. 00:18:02.92\00:18:04.36 Well, I know someone that can help you get housing. 00:18:04.39\00:18:07.09 So the intervention is critical to success. 00:18:07.12\00:18:10.39 Very critical. To success. 00:18:10.42\00:18:11.47 How do you give a person that, you know, may not be 00:18:11.50\00:18:15.06 the get-up-and-go type person, how do you motivate them? 00:18:15.09\00:18:18.72 How do you encourage them to get up 00:18:18.75\00:18:21.40 and actually do something on their own 00:18:21.43\00:18:23.59 instead of having to do things for them? 00:18:23.62\00:18:26.18 How do you motivate a person? 00:18:26.21\00:18:27.91 Well, basically I like to do one-on-one interviews. 00:18:27.94\00:18:31.42 Because I think they're very important. 00:18:31.45\00:18:34.31 Normally when I do-- when I take a person 00:18:34.34\00:18:37.72 and do a one-on-one interview is behind closed doors. 00:18:37.75\00:18:41.05 And so they will tell me what they're insecure with. 00:18:41.08\00:18:44.54 I'll say, "What is your goal? 00:18:44.57\00:18:46.29 Do you have a solution-action plan?" 00:18:46.32\00:18:48.50 Which I call SAP. 00:18:48.53\00:18:50.09 And they say, "No, what is that?" 00:18:50.12\00:18:51.42 I say, "Well, you have to have a direction. 00:18:51.45\00:18:53.48 We cannot just be out here in the atmosphere. 00:18:53.51\00:18:56.65 You have to have a goal. 00:18:56.68\00:18:58.18 You have to do the steps in order to meet that goal. 00:18:58.21\00:19:01.40 So let's sit down and write that." 00:19:01.43\00:19:03.18 So it normally becomes a long term relationship. 00:19:03.21\00:19:06.93 Okay, okay. 00:19:06.96\00:19:08.14 Now you mentioned about goals. 00:19:08.17\00:19:10.33 Goals are very important. 00:19:10.36\00:19:11.68 You know, so many people get off track in life 00:19:11.71\00:19:13.64 simply because there's no goal there. 00:19:13.67\00:19:15.37 Absolutely. 00:19:15.40\00:19:16.43 You know, don't know what I want to be 5 years from now, 00:19:16.46\00:19:18.62 10 years from now. 00:19:18.65\00:19:19.80 So it's kind of like since you have no idea 00:19:19.83\00:19:22.36 where you want to go, no destination, 00:19:22.39\00:19:24.12 your direction is kind of, you know, 00:19:24.15\00:19:26.18 going every type of way. 00:19:26.21\00:19:27.33 And you just pretty much go where the wind blows, 00:19:27.36\00:19:29.57 do what the wind says, you know. 00:19:29.60\00:19:30.98 And you really have no, you know, outlook on life, 00:19:31.01\00:19:34.20 I want to do this. 00:19:34.23\00:19:35.41 So since I want to do this-- 00:19:35.44\00:19:36.47 Like, if a person wants to be a doctor they'll say, 00:19:36.50\00:19:38.45 "Okay, I need to go through elementary school. 00:19:38.48\00:19:40.79 I need to go through middle school. 00:19:40.82\00:19:41.85 I need to go to high school. 00:19:41.88\00:19:42.92 I need to go to college. I need to go to med school." 00:19:42.95\00:19:45.04 You know, because they have a destination 00:19:45.07\00:19:46.59 they want to get to, 00:19:46.62\00:19:47.93 then they have to go through the steps, 00:19:47.96\00:19:50.06 even researching those steps. 00:19:50.09\00:19:51.62 So goals are very important, right? 00:19:51.65\00:19:53.69 Right. Very, very important. 00:19:53.72\00:19:55.55 Now have you noticed that when people tend to go through 00:19:55.58\00:19:57.55 your workshops and they get involved 00:19:57.58\00:19:59.32 in the referral programs that you offer, 00:19:59.35\00:20:02.09 do they tend to adjust better to society? 00:20:02.12\00:20:04.59 Absolutely. 00:20:04.62\00:20:05.66 They get that push because before the push 00:20:05.69\00:20:10.74 they have a sense of hopelessness 00:20:10.77\00:20:13.03 because their needs are so great. 00:20:13.06\00:20:15.02 But when they find out that there's other organizations 00:20:15.05\00:20:18.03 and agencies there to help them it does motivate them. 00:20:18.06\00:20:21.64 Okay. It does motivate them. 00:20:21.67\00:20:22.99 Okay, that's great. Let me ask you a question. 00:20:23.02\00:20:24.76 How long have you been involved in this work? 00:20:24.79\00:20:26.91 You want my testimony then, right? 00:20:26.94\00:20:31.09 Actually, I was unemployed. 00:20:31.12\00:20:33.23 I worked for a company. 00:20:33.26\00:20:35.04 After 18 years of service, I was laid off. 00:20:35.07\00:20:38.46 And so I thought, "Okay, take what you know, 00:20:38.49\00:20:41.59 and help someone else." 00:20:41.62\00:20:43.17 That's simple. That's great. 00:20:43.20\00:20:45.09 So even after 18 years of employment and you found-- 00:20:45.12\00:20:49.37 did you find that it was even hard for you 00:20:49.40\00:20:51.52 to get another job? 00:20:51.55\00:20:53.48 No, because I have a attitude of "this is gonna happen." 00:20:53.51\00:20:59.19 I can do all things. 00:20:59.22\00:21:00.90 I'm not coming to the table alone. 00:21:00.93\00:21:03.29 So, yes, absolutely, that was not an issue for me. 00:21:03.32\00:21:06.41 It was a matter of conditioning myself 00:21:06.44\00:21:09.15 because I was so used to corporate America. 00:21:09.18\00:21:11.96 And being laid off, it was like, 00:21:11.99\00:21:14.17 "Okay, well, how am I going to do this?" 00:21:14.20\00:21:16.03 But I worked through those, you know. 00:21:16.06\00:21:17.35 Okay, now you say conditioning yourself. 00:21:17.38\00:21:19.28 What were some of the things you had to do to-- 00:21:19.31\00:21:21.25 you know, like you think of an athlete 00:21:21.28\00:21:23.64 when they condition themselves, you know, 00:21:23.67\00:21:25.01 they get the proper shoes, they get the running gear, 00:21:25.04\00:21:27.15 things like that. 00:21:27.18\00:21:28.21 What did you do to condition yourself for the job search? 00:21:28.24\00:21:31.03 I think my main goal was really to discover 00:21:31.06\00:21:34.80 what else I could do. 00:21:34.83\00:21:35.95 I looked at my talents, what I do have. 00:21:35.98\00:21:38.64 What am I bringing to the table right now? 00:21:38.67\00:21:41.33 And so I took those things and I searched the internet, 00:21:41.36\00:21:44.71 and I looked to see what other people were doing 00:21:44.74\00:21:47.42 in the area of job readiness, how are they helping people. 00:21:47.45\00:21:51.12 What is nonprofit? What is that? 00:21:51.15\00:21:53.11 How does it help the community? 00:21:53.14\00:21:55.45 And from that I began to build cornerstones 00:21:55.48\00:21:58.30 and the building just got taller and taller and taller. 00:21:58.33\00:22:01.04 Amen. 00:22:01.07\00:22:02.34 So you really showed a lot of 00:22:02.37\00:22:04.08 determination and perseverance in, 00:22:04.11\00:22:06.05 you know, wanting to do something. 00:22:06.08\00:22:07.38 Absolutely.
