Hello and welcome to The Missing Peace. 00:00:34.10\00:00:36.26 My name is Jason Bradley and our primary host is 00:00:36.33\00:00:38.93 Dr. Nadine Joseph-Collins 00:00:39.00\00:00:40.87 a powerful advocate for effective fervent prayer. 00:00:40.90\00:00:44.27 Dr. Nadine is committed to equipping others 00:00:44.31\00:00:46.91 with the tools necessary to make your prayer life go, "Wow!" 00:00:46.94\00:00:50.71 Before we begin, let's have a word of prayer 00:00:50.75\00:00:53.68 and invite the Lord to join us. 00:00:53.72\00:00:55.22 Dear Heavenly Father, 00:00:55.25\00:00:56.79 as we discuss how to best communicate with you, 00:00:56.82\00:01:00.06 we ask that you would please be with us 00:01:00.12\00:01:02.22 that you would lead, guide and direct us 00:01:02.26\00:01:04.33 and that you would fill us with your Holy Spirit. 00:01:04.36\00:01:06.13 In Jesus' name we pray, amen. " 00:01:06.16\00:01:07.96 What is the topic today? 00:01:08.00\00:01:11.33 Jason, you look very excited. 00:01:11.37\00:01:13.34 I am excited. 00:01:13.37\00:01:14.97 Today we're going to be talking about: Praying in Faith. 00:01:15.00\00:01:17.57 Okay. 00:01:17.61\00:01:18.94 The whole premise is, for us to see 00:01:18.97\00:01:21.71 how faith can impact our prayer lives 00:01:21.74\00:01:24.01 or how our prayer lives can be affected by faith. 00:01:24.05\00:01:26.78 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:01:26.82\00:01:28.15 And what is the key text or what is the text 00:01:28.18\00:01:30.09 that usually comes to your mind when you hear the word "Faith"? 00:01:30.12\00:01:32.15 Hebrews chapter 11 verse 1. 00:01:32.19\00:01:34.39 Right, we all know that text very well, right? 00:01:34.42\00:01:36.93 "Faith is the substance of things hoped for... 00:01:36.99\00:01:39.46 the evidence of things not seen... " 00:01:39.49\00:01:41.63 and usually, when I would conduct Week of Prayers... 00:01:41.66\00:01:44.87 that's one of the questions I would ask 00:01:44.90\00:01:46.23 when I do this presentation, "What is faith?" 00:01:46.27\00:01:48.27 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:01:48.30\00:01:49.80 And guess what the answers I usually get? 00:01:49.84\00:01:51.51 What? 00:01:51.57\00:01:53.21 Belief... it is belief... it is believe in something 00:01:53.24\00:01:56.04 or people would usually point to the head and say, 00:01:56.08\00:01:58.85 "You know, you have to have faith. " 00:01:58.88\00:02:00.98 It's usually something that we refer to 00:02:01.05\00:02:03.08 or conceptualize as something happening up in our minds 00:02:03.12\00:02:06.15 or in our head... 00:02:06.22\00:02:07.56 some people would say it's about belief... belief... 00:02:07.59\00:02:09.76 and of course we always end up with Hebrews 11 verse 1, 00:02:09.79\00:02:12.19 dictionary definitions of faith 00:02:12.23\00:02:15.86 does refer to faith in some extent as belief 00:02:15.90\00:02:19.67 or confidence or trust in a person or a thing 00:02:19.70\00:02:23.44 for example, they would say, 00:02:23.47\00:02:24.81 "You have faith in someone's ability" 00:02:24.84\00:02:26.71 and so on... 00:02:26.74\00:02:28.08 and sometimes it is belief that is not based on proof... 00:02:28.11\00:02:31.48 that's what people would say faith is. 00:02:31.51\00:02:34.38 Now, one of... the Bible here says that 00:02:34.42\00:02:37.25 faith is... this version... it's the Rainbow Study Bible 00:02:37.29\00:02:42.09 the Rainbow Study Bible says, "What is faith?" 00:02:42.12\00:02:44.43 "It is the confident assurance that something we want 00:02:44.46\00:02:47.90 is going to happen... 00:02:47.93\00:02:49.26 it is the certainty that we have 00:02:49.30\00:02:52.27 that what we hope for is waiting for us... 00:02:52.30\00:02:55.37 even though we cannot see it up ahead... " 00:02:55.40\00:02:58.44 So, whichever translation we use... 00:02:58.47\00:03:02.08 it is saying that there is some belief 00:03:02.11\00:03:05.65 that it is based on proof that we do not have as yet 00:03:05.68\00:03:08.72 so it's belief in anything 00:03:08.75\00:03:11.19 because we can have faith in principles, in beliefs, 00:03:11.25\00:03:14.36 in institutions and so on 00:03:14.39\00:03:16.12 and the thing is, if we have faith in anything 00:03:16.16\00:03:18.19 most times it works for us 00:03:18.23\00:03:19.56 and some people actually say to me, "I don't have faith" 00:03:19.59\00:03:22.80 you believe some people don't have faith? 00:03:22.86\00:03:24.90 Jason: Oh yes. Nadine: You think so? 00:03:24.93\00:03:26.77 Jason: Yes, some people don't have faith 00:03:26.80\00:03:28.57 it seems like some people doubt everything... 00:03:28.60\00:03:30.57 like negative... unbelieving... 00:03:30.61\00:03:33.41 just-don't-trust-anything- anybody type of thing. 00:03:33.44\00:03:37.08 Nadine: But these same people go to doctors, 00:03:37.11\00:03:38.78 some of them may actually travel. 00:03:38.81\00:03:41.42 Hmmm... 00:03:41.45\00:03:42.78 Every time you do something like that, 00:03:42.82\00:03:44.99 you are exhibiting faith or belief 00:03:45.19\00:03:46.72 that the person you are going to 00:03:46.76\00:03:48.19 is going to do what you're going to them for. 00:03:48.22\00:03:51.13 So, when we go to a doctor, we are expecting 00:03:51.19\00:03:54.00 that that doctor would be able to attend to whatever problem 00:03:54.06\00:03:56.73 that we have and "hopefully" give us 00:03:56.77\00:03:58.57 the healing recipe, right? 00:03:58.60\00:04:00.70 Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... hmmm. 00:04:00.74\00:04:02.74 When we fly... we never go to the peer and say, 00:04:02.80\00:04:06.47 "Hey, can I see the pilot?" 00:04:06.51\00:04:07.84 "Can you show me your credentials?" 00:04:07.88\00:04:10.15 Or what was... you know, 00:04:10.21\00:04:12.51 "How did you place in your class?" 00:04:12.55\00:04:13.88 We don't do that kind of stuff, 00:04:13.92\00:04:15.25 we actually believe that we get on that plane... 00:04:15.28\00:04:17.89 some of us say a little prayer 00:04:17.95\00:04:19.52 but we believe that we're actually going to get 00:04:19.55\00:04:21.76 to our destination safely. 00:04:21.79\00:04:23.49 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:04:23.53\00:04:24.86 Because I'm sure that the folks who went on that 00:04:24.89\00:04:27.66 Germanwings flight... the 9525 in April 2015 00:04:27.70\00:04:30.70 thought that they were going to arrive home safely. 00:04:30.73\00:04:33.27 They probably had made plans already to go to dinner 00:04:33.30\00:04:35.67 with family or friends and maybe had other appointments. 00:04:35.70\00:04:38.37 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:04:38.41\00:04:39.74 But they had faith that when they got on that plane 00:04:39.77\00:04:41.34 that they were going to arrive home safely 00:04:41.38\00:04:42.74 so, to a degree, everyone has a measure of faith 00:04:42.78\00:04:46.35 because we exercise it every day. 00:04:46.41\00:04:48.65 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:04:48.68\00:04:50.02 We go to get our hair cut and all of that stuff, 00:04:50.05\00:04:52.05 we believe in, "Hey, this person can do 00:04:52.09\00:04:54.16 what I need them to do. " 00:04:54.22\00:04:55.66 So, we speak about it as well 00:04:55.72\00:04:58.13 sometimes as doing things blindly 00:04:58.16\00:05:01.43 because we do not know what it is 00:05:01.46\00:05:03.13 so we are saying, "Faith is a belief... 00:05:03.16\00:05:05.43 it is something that we are hoping for 00:05:05.47\00:05:07.70 that we have not yet seen" 00:05:07.74\00:05:09.27 so, sometimes we associate it with that blind belief. 00:05:09.30\00:05:12.74 Now, if we really examine Hebrews 11:1 00:05:12.77\00:05:15.34 and just break down these two lines, 00:05:15.41\00:05:17.91 actually it's one long line or two short lines... 00:05:17.95\00:05:21.12 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, 00:05:21.15\00:05:24.29 the evidence of things not seen. " 00:05:24.32\00:05:26.55 We may discover that faith has much more 00:05:26.59\00:05:30.33 than just that belief... 00:05:30.36\00:05:32.13 that blind faith or that trust and so on... 00:05:32.16\00:05:34.93 and that's where we want to go today. 00:05:34.96\00:05:36.80 Okay... 00:05:36.87\00:05:38.20 Because when we examine faith of the Bible, 00:05:38.23\00:05:40.67 we will see how it becomes practical 00:05:40.70\00:05:42.47 in that habit of praying every day... 00:05:42.50\00:05:44.31 that hope that we want to develop 00:05:44.34\00:05:46.07 so we can make our prayer lives go, "Wow!" 00:05:46.14\00:05:47.98 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:05:48.04\00:05:49.38 Substance... when we are in Elementary School 00:05:49.41\00:05:52.88 and we learn about substance, 00:05:52.91\00:05:54.45 we learn about something that is tangible... 00:05:54.48\00:05:57.19 from an English perspective, it's something real... 00:05:57.22\00:06:00.82 something physical... 00:06:00.86\00:06:02.19 something that we call, "Matter" 00:06:02.22\00:06:03.56 you can feel it 00:06:03.59\00:06:04.93 so, it consists of tangible solid presence... it's substance 00:06:04.96\00:06:08.16 when we look from the Hebrew perspective, 00:06:08.20\00:06:11.77 substance also denotes something you can see, 00:06:11.80\00:06:15.14 you can hear, you can taste, you can feel, you can touch... 00:06:15.17\00:06:18.67 again, it all refers to things that we could actually... 00:06:18.71\00:06:22.18 that could actually materialize. 00:06:22.24\00:06:23.71 Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... hmmm. 00:06:23.75\00:06:25.11 And the Bible is saying, "Faith is the substance... " 00:06:25.18\00:06:26.75 Okay. 00:06:26.82\00:06:28.22 So, let's keep in mind "Substance" 00:06:28.25\00:06:29.58 in these two contexts which is really the same 00:06:29.62\00:06:32.15 that we are looking at something tangible... 00:06:32.19\00:06:34.66 something physical... something real... 00:06:34.69\00:06:36.59 faith is the substance... 00:06:36.62\00:06:38.69 Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... hmmm. 00:06:38.73\00:06:40.06 Then when we talk about things hoped for... 00:06:40.10\00:06:42.30 when we are hoping for something it is not abstract... 00:06:42.33\00:06:45.97 so, yes, I am hoping, for example, 00:06:46.00\00:06:49.40 to let's say... have a nice sandwich. 00:06:49.44\00:06:52.74 The reason why I can hope for that sandwich 00:06:52.77\00:06:55.28 is because I probably had it before already, 00:06:55.31\00:06:57.71 and I can associate that taste in my mind and in my mouth 00:06:57.78\00:07:01.68 so, when I'm hoping for it, it is something that I know 00:07:01.72\00:07:05.59 that I could actually get. 00:07:05.62\00:07:07.22 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:07:07.26\00:07:08.59 It's just that I don't have it yet 00:07:08.62\00:07:10.33 but we can picture it in our minds... 00:07:10.36\00:07:11.83 some foods that we like... 00:07:11.86\00:07:13.76 we salivate when we think about them 00:07:13.80\00:07:15.50 because we could hope for it, 00:07:15.53\00:07:17.07 because we already know what it's like. 00:07:17.10\00:07:18.53 Tastes like... yeah we know what we're missing, yeah. 00:07:18.57\00:07:20.64 Exactly, so if I'm hoping to see the Eiffel Tower, for example, 00:07:20.67\00:07:24.04 Is it something that is tangible or intangible? 00:07:24.07\00:07:27.31 Jason: It's tangible. 00:07:27.34\00:07:29.18 Nadine: Because what I would have to do 00:07:29.21\00:07:30.75 is to buy a plane ticket 00:07:30.78\00:07:32.11 I need to check, of course, if I need a visa to get to Paris 00:07:32.15\00:07:35.02 then, I will have to look at getting a ticket 00:07:35.05\00:07:37.69 to go up the Eiffel Tower, 00:07:37.72\00:07:39.05 or I could just stay down and I could admire it 00:07:39.09\00:07:41.99 but the thing is, what I'm hoping for 00:07:42.02\00:07:44.13 is something that could actually happen 00:07:44.16\00:07:46.23 but it has not happened yet. 00:07:46.26\00:07:47.60 Yeah, hmmm... hmmm... 00:07:47.63\00:07:48.96 And so, we are talking about things hoped for 00:07:49.00\00:07:51.73 and then when we look, for example, 00:07:51.77\00:07:54.24 at the evidence of things not seen, 00:07:54.27\00:07:56.71 but before I go there, I want to say something, 00:07:56.74\00:07:58.71 you know the Bible tells us, 00:07:58.74\00:08:00.08 you know that there is the tree of life... 00:08:00.11\00:08:01.44 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:08:01.48\00:08:02.81 It's something that we are hoping to see, right? 00:08:02.84\00:08:04.18 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:08:04.21\00:08:05.55 We are hoping to see the sea of glass, 00:08:05.58\00:08:07.12 we are hoping to walk on the streets of gold, right, 00:08:07.15\00:08:10.92 but we are able to conceptualize these things in our minds 00:08:10.95\00:08:15.36 because these things... 00:08:15.39\00:08:17.63 God has given us physical representations in our life 00:08:17.66\00:08:20.60 so we know what a tree looks like 00:08:20.66\00:08:23.00 so now we can visualize a tree in heaven 00:08:23.03\00:08:26.37 so the tree on earth is just a physical representation 00:08:26.40\00:08:30.34 of the Tree of Life that we have not yet seen 00:08:30.41\00:08:32.64 but now we can make an association. 00:08:32.67\00:08:34.74 We know what gold is, we know what streets look like 00:08:34.78\00:08:38.31 so we can only imagine now gold on the streets 00:08:38.35\00:08:42.35 so instead of having what we use now, 00:08:42.38\00:08:45.15 we use gold instead 00:08:45.19\00:08:46.96 and we can imagine people playing at that gold 00:08:46.99\00:08:50.13 and the tractors pass on... 00:08:50.53\00:08:52.16 just like when we see a road being laid out 00:08:52.19\00:08:53.83 so now we can visualize 00:08:53.86\00:08:55.66 so that the streets of gold 00:08:55.70\00:08:57.47 is a representation of something we have not yet seen 00:08:57.50\00:09:00.64 but now we can visualize it 00:09:00.67\00:09:02.20 and the same thing with the Sea of Glass or anything else, 00:09:02.24\00:09:05.37 so these are the thing that we are hoping to see 00:09:05.41\00:09:08.14 but God has given us physical representation 00:09:08.18\00:09:11.38 so we can get a taste of what is to come 00:09:11.41\00:09:14.52 and then we have the evidence of things not seen. 00:09:14.58\00:09:18.29 So, if I had never seen the Eiffel Tower, right, 00:09:18.32\00:09:21.49 I was watching a movie and this is actually real 00:09:21.52\00:09:24.63 so I was watching a movie and I said, "Hey, I want to go there" 00:09:24.66\00:09:27.00 so I went ahead and made plans 00:09:27.03\00:09:29.30 so I could actually go to see what Paris looks like 00:09:29.33\00:09:33.70 really and truly the Eiffel Tower 00:09:33.74\00:09:35.30 I wanted to visit, 00:09:35.34\00:09:36.67 so what happened is, I got there, 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.71 when I got to the bottom of it 00:09:38.74\00:09:40.88 there were so many people, the line was so long, 00:09:40.91\00:09:42.81 I'm like, "I'm not taking this line to go us this thing" 00:09:42.84\00:09:44.98 so I stayed, I walked underneath it, 00:09:45.01\00:09:47.58 I looked up, I took pictures, 00:09:47.62\00:09:49.58 then I did other sites in Paris 00:09:49.62\00:09:51.42 and from different distances, 00:09:51.45\00:09:53.15 of course, you can see the Eiffel tower in the background, 00:09:53.22\00:09:55.16 so I took pictures, 00:09:55.22\00:09:56.59 so, now I have evidence 00:09:56.62\00:09:57.96 of the thing 00:09:57.99\00:09:59.79 that before I had not yet seen 00:09:59.83\00:10:01.80 now, I have the evidence with the pictures 00:10:01.86\00:10:04.37 and they say "Pictures don't lie" 00:10:04.40\00:10:06.70 but in this day and age people do a lot of photo shopping. 00:10:06.74\00:10:08.80 That's very true... that's very true. 00:10:08.84\00:10:11.41 But the point is, I walked around there 00:10:11.44\00:10:13.61 and I was able to take the pictures 00:10:13.64\00:10:15.68 so now, faith is the substance of things hoped for 00:10:15.71\00:10:19.55 evidence of things not seen. 00:10:19.58\00:10:21.78 Now, as we unpack it like that, we can see 00:10:21.82\00:10:24.85 that faith really is not an abstract thought. 00:10:24.89\00:10:27.89 It is not something in our head, 00:10:27.92\00:10:29.96 because in all of these instances, 00:10:29.99\00:10:31.99 first, you have substance, 00:10:32.03\00:10:34.36 you can touch, you can feel and so on... 00:10:34.40\00:10:35.76 the things hoped for... 00:10:35.80\00:10:37.47 you could actually get them later... 00:10:37.50\00:10:40.07 you could actually see them later, 00:10:40.10\00:10:42.04 you could experience them later, 00:10:42.07\00:10:43.97 and you can also collect evidence 00:10:44.01\00:10:45.84 as in the example of having the photos of the Eiffel Tower 00:10:45.87\00:10:48.64 so, in legal terms, for example, 00:10:48.68\00:10:50.78 evidence is that which tends to prove a fact 00:10:50.81\00:10:53.42 but not the fact itself, 00:10:53.45\00:10:56.05 so, it says, any matter of fact, 00:10:56.08\00:10:58.82 a legal definition is: 00:10:58.85\00:11:00.19 Any matter of fact that a party or lawsuit offers 00:11:00.22\00:11:02.49 to prove or disprove a case. 00:11:02.52\00:11:04.56 So that's what evidence is, 00:11:04.59\00:11:06.59 and so, it's a System of rules and so on 00:11:06.63\00:11:09.16 so, if we have an accident, 00:11:09.23\00:11:10.80 generally when you have an accident 00:11:10.83\00:11:12.93 you never hear the two people saying the same story, 00:11:12.97\00:11:15.20 there's always disputed facts, 00:11:15.24\00:11:17.64 one person will say it happened like this 00:11:17.67\00:11:19.67 and another person will say it happened like that 00:11:19.71\00:11:21.41 because everybody wants to be in the right 00:11:21.44\00:11:24.31 so, evidence now, will take into account 00:11:24.38\00:11:27.22 these testimonies that these two people are giving 00:11:27.25\00:11:32.32 but more so, the police officer would come in 00:11:32.35\00:11:34.99 and they would collect a bunch of information, 00:11:35.02\00:11:37.63 they would look for eye witnesses, 00:11:37.66\00:11:38.99 they would look at distances, they would look at the weather, 00:11:39.03\00:11:41.50 they would look at a bunch of stuff 00:11:41.53\00:11:43.00 as they try to weigh 00:11:43.03\00:11:44.93 on what really are the facts of this case, 00:11:45.00\00:11:47.34 Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... hmmm. 00:11:47.37\00:11:49.10 Okay, so, evidence now is 00:11:49.14\00:11:50.84 what would be accepted into the equation 00:11:50.87\00:11:53.31 to say, "Hey, this will help us to know actually what is factual 00:11:53.34\00:11:57.45 so, faith cannot be abstract 00:11:57.48\00:11:59.41 because if you collect all that evidence, 00:11:59.45\00:12:01.82 if you go get eye witness testimonies, 00:12:01.85\00:12:04.19 you look at the weather reports 00:12:04.22\00:12:05.65 you look at all of the different things in the car and everything 00:12:05.69\00:12:09.09 you are collecting things that you can actually see... 00:12:09.12\00:12:11.49 that you can actually write and so on, 00:12:11.53\00:12:12.89 so you're collecting evidence, 00:12:12.93\00:12:14.26 so, faith... it goes beyond abstract, 00:12:14.30\00:12:16.36 when we look at the Bible, it's filled with promises. 00:12:16.40\00:12:19.03 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:12:19.07\00:12:20.44 These promises are actually facts, 00:12:20.47\00:12:22.20 these are the facts that God has laid out 00:12:22.24\00:12:25.51 in the Bible for us, 00:12:25.54\00:12:27.01 now, as we go through our experiences, 00:12:27.04\00:12:29.88 as we develop our prayer life, 00:12:29.91\00:12:31.48 part of our prayer life should be... 00:12:31.51\00:12:33.72 really claiming those facts 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.18 and the evidence would be our testimonies... 00:12:35.22\00:12:40.22 how these promises, these facts in the Word of God 00:12:40.26\00:12:44.49 are actually true, 00:12:44.53\00:12:45.86 because now we have the evidence to prove 00:12:45.89\00:12:47.66 the Word of God, 00:12:47.73\00:12:49.06 we have the evidence to prove 00:12:49.10\00:12:50.43 the facts in the Word of God to be true. 00:12:50.47\00:12:52.57 Jason: Yeah, and if God says it, 00:12:52.60\00:12:54.64 you know... I mean... well, you should know 00:12:54.67\00:12:56.54 that it is... that it is true. 00:12:56.57\00:12:58.67 Nadine: Yeah, exactly and so that's why Law... has given us 00:12:58.71\00:13:01.98 Law... I'm talking about like the legal aspect of things... 00:13:02.01\00:13:05.25 I love Law, by-the-way 00:13:05.28\00:13:06.68 but Law has given us a clear path 00:13:06.72\00:13:08.65 from reading to understand Hebrews 11:1 more, 00:13:08.68\00:13:11.55 and as we work on developing our prayer life 00:13:11.59\00:13:14.39 because you see the thing is, eye witness testimonies... 00:13:14.42\00:13:17.99 or first-hand testimonies are the only testimonies 00:13:18.06\00:13:20.70 that are actually accepted in the Court of Law. 00:13:20.73\00:13:23.37 Hmmm... 00:13:23.40\00:13:24.73 So, hearsay evidence is not accepted... 00:13:24.77\00:13:26.87 so I cannot tell you how good a sandwich tastes 00:13:26.90\00:13:30.07 until I have tasted it myself. 00:13:30.11\00:13:31.87 I cannot tell you how nice a perfume smells 00:13:31.91\00:13:34.64 until I have smelt it myself. 00:13:34.68\00:13:36.01 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:13:36.04\00:13:37.45 You see, I cannot tell you how good God is 00:13:37.48\00:13:39.51 and how true He is to His word 00:13:39.55\00:13:41.85 until I have experienced Him for myself. 00:13:41.88\00:13:44.19 Yeah. 00:13:44.22\00:13:45.55 So, you cannot take my story, 00:13:45.59\00:13:47.19 or you cannot take stories in the Bible 00:13:47.22\00:13:49.02 which is what we usually do... which is fine 00:13:49.06\00:13:51.16 we can use the stories in the Bible 00:13:51.19\00:13:54.16 when we want to talk about God 00:13:54.20\00:13:55.53 but if we meet somebody who doesn't believe in God, 00:13:55.56\00:13:58.53 how are you going to convince them that your God is true? 00:13:58.57\00:14:01.04 that will come from your personal testimony. 00:14:01.07\00:14:03.71 From the evidence that you have collected 00:14:03.74\00:14:06.31 that your God actually works 00:14:06.34\00:14:07.74 and nobody can contend with eye-witness testimonies. 00:14:07.78\00:14:10.28 Yeah, yeah. 00:14:10.31\00:14:11.65 Nobody can contend with the fact that, 00:14:11.68\00:14:13.31 "Hey, God did this in my life" 00:14:13.35\00:14:14.98 and we are living in a world where people are open, 00:14:15.02\00:14:17.35 they call it the Post-Modern World 00:14:17.39\00:14:18.75 and thing... but one good thing about the Post-Modern Era, 00:14:18.79\00:14:22.56 is that people are open to other people's stories 00:14:22.59\00:14:26.06 so now, our stories as Christians 00:14:26.09\00:14:27.90 make more sense 00:14:27.93\00:14:29.36 because people are open to your personal testimony 00:14:29.40\00:14:31.80 so, while they might disregard the Bible, 00:14:31.83\00:14:34.34 and give us all types of excuses 00:14:34.40\00:14:36.71 why they do not want to have anything to do with the Book, 00:14:36.74\00:14:38.81 when it is... you are able to say 00:14:38.87\00:14:40.84 how God is real in your experience 00:14:40.88\00:14:42.98 because God answered these prayers, 00:14:43.01\00:14:45.25 because God did this or God did that 00:14:45.31\00:14:47.45 they cannot contend with that. 00:14:47.48\00:14:48.82 Yeah... 00:14:48.85\00:14:50.19 I want to share this Bible verse with you, 00:14:50.22\00:14:52.22 it comes from Hebrews chapter 11 verse 6, 00:14:52.25\00:14:54.79 and it reads, "But without faith 00:14:54.82\00:14:57.16 it is impossible to please Him: 00:14:57.19\00:14:59.46 for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, 00:14:59.49\00:15:02.56 and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. " 00:15:02.60\00:15:06.03 As we're sitting here and we're talking about faith and prayer 00:15:06.07\00:15:09.50 and faith and prayer, 00:15:09.54\00:15:10.87 this Bible verse right here shows the importance of faith, 00:15:10.91\00:15:17.85 how important it is to have faith, 00:15:17.88\00:15:19.65 without it, we... it's impossible to please God. 00:15:19.68\00:15:22.45 Yes, that's the thing, you see, 00:15:22.48\00:15:24.15 and that's why your own faith story... 00:15:24.19\00:15:27.59 your own personal journey... 00:15:27.62\00:15:29.39 you're own story cannot be argued with 00:15:29.42\00:15:32.49 because it's not a second-hand report. 00:15:32.53\00:15:35.33 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:15:35.36\00:15:36.70 It's your evidence of faith. 00:15:36.73\00:15:38.07 The Apostle John actually said in 1st John 1 verse 1 he said, 00:15:38.10\00:15:42.54 We proclaim to you the One who existed from the beginning, 00:15:42.57\00:15:47.11 whom we have heard and seen. 00:15:47.14\00:15:49.68 We saw Him with our own eyes 00:15:49.71\00:15:52.21 and touched Him with our own hands. 00:15:52.25\00:15:54.12 He is the Word of life. " 00:15:54.15\00:15:55.48 So, here they were talking about God 00:15:55.52\00:15:57.52 from their own personal experience, 00:15:57.55\00:15:59.65 remember we spoke about substance and things hoped for 00:15:59.69\00:16:02.79 so they were able to see Him, they were able to touch Him, 00:16:02.82\00:16:05.93 they experienced Him, they felt Him, 00:16:05.96\00:16:08.56 He was real, they were eye-witnesses 00:16:08.60\00:16:11.13 and these are the only types of testimonies 00:16:11.17\00:16:13.74 that are actually admitted in the Court. 00:16:13.77\00:16:16.27 We're talking about, now, evidence as well, 00:16:16.30\00:16:18.77 so they had the evidence to prove. 00:16:18.81\00:16:21.01 One guy by the name of Hodge said, 00:16:21.04\00:16:23.41 "Faith must have adequate evidence 00:16:23.45\00:16:25.48 or else it is mere superstition. " 00:16:25.51\00:16:27.48 Hmmm... 00:16:27.52\00:16:28.85 So if your faith is just a talking faith 00:16:28.88\00:16:30.65 or faith in your head 00:16:30.69\00:16:32.02 but you have no evidence to prove that faith, 00:16:32.05\00:16:35.12 then it's mere superstition 00:16:35.16\00:16:37.03 and that's why the Bible filled with over 3,000 promises 00:16:37.06\00:16:41.23 gives us ample opportunities to continue to collect evidence 00:16:41.26\00:16:45.40 to prove that the Word of God is true, 00:16:45.43\00:16:48.20 to prove that God actually answers our prayers, 00:16:48.24\00:16:51.11 to prove that we actually have something... 00:16:51.14\00:16:53.94 evidence to back up what we are saying about our faith. 00:16:53.98\00:16:57.65 So, our prayer lives or our faith 00:16:57.68\00:17:00.98 is activated by our prayer lives, 00:17:01.05\00:17:03.49 that is why they are connected. 00:17:03.52\00:17:05.92 How else can we claim 00:17:05.95\00:17:07.69 the promises or the facts outlined in the Word of God 00:17:07.72\00:17:11.16 unless we spend time with God. 00:17:11.19\00:17:13.16 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:17:13.19\00:17:14.53 How else can we collect that evidence? 00:17:14.56\00:17:16.00 How will we know that God is actually answering our prayers 00:17:16.03\00:17:19.57 when we take the Word of God... we claim these promises 00:17:19.60\00:17:22.57 then we get the evidence to prove it 00:17:22.60\00:17:24.37 but we must spend time with God doing that. 00:17:24.41\00:17:26.71 So faith is not an abstract 00:17:26.74\00:17:29.14 when it is actually an intelligent holy response 00:17:29.18\00:17:32.11 to God and His Word. 00:17:32.15\00:17:35.32 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:17:35.35\00:17:36.85 So, faith goes beyond that blind belief, 00:17:36.89\00:17:38.89 it goes beyond just the things that we think happening up here 00:17:38.92\00:17:43.56 to us searching for ways to get evidence 00:17:43.63\00:17:47.26 to prove that God actually exists, 00:17:47.30\00:17:49.60 so, it's in a deeper sense... faith is an action word 00:17:49.66\00:17:53.13 because we are digging 00:17:53.17\00:17:54.50 and that's the direction we are taking now, 00:17:54.54\00:17:56.81 Faith as an action word. 00:17:56.84\00:17:58.57 Yes. 00:17:58.61\00:18:00.04 Right, so when we examine the Hall of Faith, 00:18:00.08\00:18:02.44 Hebrews 11 that we've been looking at, 00:18:02.48\00:18:04.18 every time one of these heroes were mentioned, 00:18:04.21\00:18:07.68 we see an action following... 00:18:07.72\00:18:10.32 So if we look at, for example, the Bible says, 00:18:10.35\00:18:14.49 "By faith Abraham... " 00:18:14.52\00:18:15.86 then an activity follows, "he obeyed... " 00:18:15.89\00:18:17.83 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:18:17.89\00:18:19.59 "and he was tested... " and so on, 00:18:19.63\00:18:21.50 so, every time we see the name of the hero 00:18:21.56\00:18:24.07 and they are saying, "by faith... " 00:18:24.10\00:18:26.60 we see the action happening, 00:18:26.63\00:18:28.44 Sarah... in Hebrews 11:11 00:18:28.47\00:18:30.14 "by faith... " an activity followed, 00:18:30.17\00:18:32.77 the Bible says, "she received strength and bore a child. " 00:18:32.81\00:18:36.01 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:18:36.04\00:18:37.68 Then we have Isaac, 00:18:37.71\00:18:39.31 when it says, "By faith Isaac... " 00:18:39.35\00:18:40.88 an activity followed, he blessed Jacob and Esau 00:18:40.92\00:18:43.39 so, he did something... so there's an activity. 00:18:43.42\00:18:45.89 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:18:45.92\00:18:47.26 We look at Moses, the Bible says, 00:18:47.29\00:18:48.62 "By faith Moses... " an activity followed, 00:18:48.66\00:18:51.13 look, his mother hid him... 00:18:51.16\00:18:53.40 she took... she did some action, 00:18:53.43\00:18:56.10 she took him and she hid him there... 00:18:56.16\00:18:57.67 and we know his story, so an activity happened 00:18:57.70\00:18:59.83 then in his adult life, we see him mentioned again, 00:18:59.87\00:19:02.90 "By faith Moses... " an activity followed, 00:19:02.94\00:19:05.37 he stood up, 00:19:05.44\00:19:06.78 "he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. " 00:19:06.81\00:19:08.94 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:19:08.98\00:19:10.31 so he had that activity 00:19:10.35\00:19:11.68 then we saw him later on when he struck the rock 00:19:11.71\00:19:14.65 because he wanted water to come out, 00:19:14.68\00:19:16.58 then we saw again, when he stood by the Red Sea, 00:19:16.65\00:19:20.39 he didn't just stand there 00:19:20.42\00:19:21.76 waiting for God to open it and stuff 00:19:21.79\00:19:24.39 and say, "I have faith, God led me in this direction 00:19:24.43\00:19:26.70 and He's going to open the Red Sea" 00:19:26.73\00:19:28.26 he didn't just stand there waiting, 00:19:28.30\00:19:29.83 he actually began to walk 00:19:29.86\00:19:32.13 and as he began to go toward the Red Sea, 00:19:32.20\00:19:35.54 the Red Sea parted and all of that, again, is action 00:19:35.60\00:19:38.27 we see every time... by faith action is happening 00:19:38.31\00:19:40.98 an activity is following. 00:19:41.01\00:19:42.34 We look at Abel, "By faith Abel... " 00:19:42.38\00:19:44.85 an activity followed, 00:19:44.88\00:19:46.21 what did he do? He offered a sacrifice, 00:19:46.25\00:19:48.15 so, an activity happens. 00:19:48.18\00:19:49.98 I think about when Peter stepped out of the boat onto the water 00:19:50.02\00:19:52.85 and started walking towards Jesus 00:19:52.89\00:19:55.22 but as soon as he took his eyes off Christ, 00:19:55.26\00:19:57.36 he started to sink. 00:19:57.39\00:19:59.39 Yes, yes, because faith is really about believing in Him... 00:19:59.43\00:20:02.50 following Him, 00:20:02.56\00:20:03.90 so, when he began to look at self, 00:20:03.93\00:20:05.27 then he began to sink. 00:20:05.30\00:20:06.74 And another thing 00:20:06.77\00:20:08.64 faith without action is mere profession, 00:20:08.67\00:20:11.51 so just like Christianity, 00:20:11.54\00:20:13.38 if you are a Christian in name only, 00:20:13.41\00:20:15.08 there's nothing different about your lifestyle 00:20:15.11\00:20:17.81 than that of a non-believer. 00:20:17.85\00:20:19.48 And that's why Paul says, "If we have faith, 00:20:19.51\00:20:21.92 without the actual evidence, it's superstition 00:20:21.95\00:20:25.79 so we look at, for example, people like Noah 00:20:25.82\00:20:29.62 the Bible says, "By faith Noah... " 00:20:29.69\00:20:31.73 he prepared the ark... so he did an activity, 00:20:31.76\00:20:35.76 he built this huge boat, so he did something. 00:20:35.80\00:20:38.73 We look at Joshua, "By faith... " the Bible says, 00:20:38.77\00:20:42.80 "he led the children around the city seven times" 00:20:42.84\00:20:46.81 that's a lot of action 00:20:46.84\00:20:48.34 and then all those walls came crumbling down. 00:20:48.38\00:20:51.28 So, we look at Gideon, 00:20:51.31\00:20:53.35 you remember when Gideon wanted to go to war, 00:20:53.38\00:20:55.25 the Bible says, "By faith... " 00:20:55.28\00:20:56.79 of course an activity follows, 00:20:56.85\00:20:58.29 "he trusted God for the small army" 00:20:58.32\00:21:01.12 so, you remember, he had 135,000 men 00:21:01.16\00:21:03.89 and God told him, "No, you cannot take all these men" 00:21:03.93\00:21:06.23 he gave them reasons... he gave them... 00:21:06.26\00:21:07.66 he told them, "You could go home" 00:21:07.70\00:21:09.26 and so on until he went down to 300 00:21:09.30\00:21:11.27 and they were able to defeat the armies, 00:21:11.30\00:21:13.10 then we look at Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego 00:21:13.13\00:21:15.47 the Bible says, "By faith... " an activity followed 00:21:15.50\00:21:18.37 they chose not to bow, 00:21:18.41\00:21:19.91 so they made a decision not to bow 00:21:19.94\00:21:22.18 and we saw what happened with them, 00:21:22.21\00:21:24.35 even when they were thrown in to the fiery furnace 00:21:24.38\00:21:26.98 that became an evidence of God being... 00:21:27.02\00:21:29.65 of God really being true to them 00:21:29.68\00:21:31.52 and God really existing 00:21:31.55\00:21:33.05 because Nebuchadnezzar himself was able to see and identify, 00:21:33.09\00:21:36.83 "Hey, I just threw three men in there 00:21:36.86\00:21:38.26 but the Son of God is also there with them... 00:21:38.29\00:21:39.89 there's a fourth one. " Jason: Yeah. 00:21:39.93\00:21:41.26 So, you see, activity happens every time, 00:21:41.30\00:21:43.73 then we have Esther, 00:21:43.77\00:21:45.10 the Bible says, "By faith Esther... " 00:21:45.13\00:21:46.80 she was rewarded for her bravery 00:21:46.84\00:21:48.77 remember she went before the King. 00:21:48.80\00:21:50.44 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:21:50.47\00:21:51.81 So, she didn't just stay there fasting and praying 00:21:51.84\00:21:53.27 and was in the palace, 00:21:53.31\00:21:54.71 but she asked permission to see the king, 00:21:54.74\00:21:57.38 she took some steps, she did an activity, 00:21:57.45\00:22:00.12 so that the children or the Jews... her people 00:22:00.15\00:22:03.52 could have been saved 00:22:03.55\00:22:04.89 and there are some more stories, like, unpopular stories, 00:22:04.92\00:22:07.82 when we look at, for example, 00:22:07.86\00:22:09.46 the un-named leper of Matthew 8:2 and 3, 00:22:09.49\00:22:12.73 he went and began to worship God and ask God to make Him clean 00:22:12.76\00:22:16.97 so, he didn't stay wherever he was, 00:22:17.03\00:22:19.07 he went in search of Jesus and he was healed. 00:22:19.10\00:22:22.37 Then we have the Roman Officer, he went to God and said, 00:22:22.40\00:22:25.97 "I'm not worthy for you to even come to my home... 00:22:26.01\00:22:28.71 but I want you to heal my servant... " 00:22:28.74\00:22:30.95 so he had so much faith, he went looking for God... 00:22:30.98\00:22:33.88 that's activity 00:22:33.92\00:22:35.25 but he's also saying, "You do not need to come to my home, 00:22:35.28\00:22:37.52 I believe you so much, 00:22:37.55\00:22:38.89 I know that you can heal him right here, right now, 00:22:38.92\00:22:42.39 even though he's not in your presence" 00:22:42.42\00:22:44.46 so we have these unpopular stories, 00:22:44.49\00:22:46.46 so the Centurion's faith... this Roman soldier 00:22:46.49\00:22:49.40 impressed God so much, He said, I never even saw so much faith" 00:22:49.43\00:22:52.00 because here was this guy not just coming after God 00:22:52.03\00:22:55.44 or after Jesus, rather, but he is saying, "I believe you 00:22:55.47\00:22:59.51 I've heard what you have done and I would like you 00:22:59.54\00:23:02.68 to just touch and heal my servant right now at home" 00:23:02.71\00:23:05.51 you know, and then, we have the woman with the issue of blood. 00:23:05.55\00:23:09.78 Oh yes. 00:23:09.82\00:23:11.15 She didn't just sit by the road waiting for Him to come, 00:23:11.19\00:23:13.29 she didn't just believe that somebody would carry her to Him, 00:23:13.32\00:23:18.46 she pushed and pushed through the crowd... 00:23:18.49\00:23:21.16 she crawled, she did whatever she had to do 00:23:21.20\00:23:23.80 because in her mind, "I know, if I just touch any part of Him" 00:23:23.83\00:23:27.97 and in this case she was able to touch just the hem... 00:23:28.00\00:23:30.21 Jason: Of His garment. 00:23:30.24\00:23:31.74 Nadine: And she was healed because she had faith, 00:23:31.77\00:23:35.01 so, you see, but the faith is followed by action 00:23:35.04\00:23:37.41 for that woman to have put herself through that 00:23:37.45\00:23:40.25 it means she believed even before she touched Jesus 00:23:40.32\00:23:43.08 that He was going to heal her. 00:23:43.12\00:23:44.45 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:23:44.49\00:23:45.82 But she knew that she needed to act on her faith... 00:23:45.85\00:23:48.06 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:23:48.09\00:23:49.42 And so, she moved 00:23:49.46\00:23:50.79 until she touched just the hem of His garment 00:23:50.83\00:23:52.76 and she was healed and that's why He said, "Virtue left me" 00:23:52.79\00:23:56.40 because He knew that the person that touched Him 00:23:56.46\00:23:59.63 had such strong beliefs 00:23:59.67\00:24:01.47 and so, she could have just said, 00:24:01.50\00:24:03.97 "Hey, I believe God can heal me" and that's it... no, no, no, no 00:24:04.01\00:24:06.04 she acted toward her healing. 00:24:06.07\00:24:08.34 We had the two blind men as well in Matthew 9, 00:24:08.38\00:24:12.41 they came to Jesus asking for healing 00:24:12.45\00:24:14.42 from wherever they came, they came to Him asking for healing 00:24:14.48\00:24:17.25 so, activity happened every time faith is mentioned in the Bible, 00:24:17.29\00:24:22.32 in terms of people acting toward their faith 00:24:22.36\00:24:25.26 and one of my favorite stories is the story of Rahab, 00:24:25.29\00:24:28.36 because you see, when Rahab was considered 00:24:28.40\00:24:31.47 and called the harlot of her community in Jericho, 00:24:31.50\00:24:34.64 so, no one would have thought that when these Bible Workers 00:24:34.67\00:24:38.54 were coming to her home, 00:24:38.57\00:24:40.31 or when these men came to her home 00:24:40.34\00:24:41.94 that they were Bible Workers, 00:24:41.98\00:24:43.31 they would have thought otherwise 00:24:43.35\00:24:45.58 but Rahab had heard about Jesus, 00:24:45.61\00:24:47.98 she had heard about what He had done already 00:24:48.02\00:24:50.65 the testimonies of Joshua and Moses and all of these guys 00:24:50.69\00:24:54.06 were in her mind 00:24:54.09\00:24:55.69 and that is why she was able to receive these guys, 00:24:55.72\00:24:58.43 that's why the Bible has her, 00:24:58.46\00:24:59.93 imagine, we call her a prostitute 00:24:59.96\00:25:01.76 but she was in the Hall of Faith 00:25:01.80\00:25:03.33 because she did an action too "By faith... " the Bible says, 00:25:03.37\00:25:07.57 "she welcomed the spies into her home. " 00:25:07.60\00:25:10.51 So, not only did she welcome them there 00:25:10.54\00:25:13.48 but she actually made a negotiation... 00:25:13.51\00:25:16.31 actually she negotiated with them for her salvation 00:25:16.34\00:25:18.71 and the salvation of her family 00:25:18.75\00:25:20.85 and for the salvation of all of us 00:25:20.88\00:25:22.88 because through her experience, we know for sure 00:25:22.92\00:25:25.05 that God's blood... that red scarlet thread 00:25:25.09\00:25:27.62 that she was supposed to hang 00:25:27.66\00:25:28.99 is deliverance for every one of us. 00:25:29.02\00:25:30.53 Hmmm... 00:25:30.56\00:25:31.89 And I believe that she's a reformed... 00:25:31.93\00:25:34.00 we need to call her by a different name 00:25:34.03\00:25:36.10 because her story actually gives hope to all of our stories 00:25:36.13\00:25:40.24 that God can do anything, so, faith is an act 00:25:40.27\00:25:43.97 it is not... 00:25:44.01\00:25:45.34 it is not an abstract thought, it is an action word 00:25:45.37\00:25:48.24 it is a behavior... it's not an invisible thing in our head. 00:25:48.28\00:25:51.68 It's doing and more than doing, 00:25:51.71\00:25:54.25 it's more than speaking 00:25:54.28\00:25:57.09 because faith without action is dead, 00:25:57.12\00:26:01.22 you know, we say, "Faith without works is dead. " 00:26:01.26\00:26:02.66 Yeah. 00:26:02.69\00:26:04.03 Faith without action is dead because they are the same thing, 00:26:04.06\00:26:05.66 you show me your faith and I'll show you your works. 00:26:05.69\00:26:09.03 Yeah. 00:26:09.06\00:26:10.40 So, the take-away points that we can have 00:26:10.43\00:26:11.77 is that a person full of faith 00:26:11.80\00:26:14.17 is a person that is full of action. 00:26:14.20\00:26:15.97 Hmmm... 00:26:16.00\00:26:17.41 So, if you say you have faith, show me your actions, 00:26:17.44\00:26:19.87 I need to see the evidence of that, 00:26:19.91\00:26:21.61 I need to the action behind that faith that you say you have. 00:26:21.64\00:26:24.75 The Bible says, "By their fruits you shall know them. " 00:26:24.78\00:26:26.75 Exactly, so we must always have evidence 00:26:26.82\00:26:29.68 to prove the faith that we are talking about. 00:26:29.75\00:26:32.32 The Bible is not concerned about the quality 00:26:32.35\00:26:34.82 or really, the quantity of faith... the how much we have 00:26:34.89\00:26:38.43 because the Bible says, 00:26:38.46\00:26:39.79 "If you have faith of a mustard seed, 00:26:39.83\00:26:41.66 you can move a mountain, 00:26:41.70\00:26:43.03 so He's more concerned about us demonstrating 00:26:43.06\00:26:45.63 whatever little faith that we believe that we have, 00:26:45.70\00:26:48.70 right, and everyone, of course, has a measure of faith 00:26:48.74\00:26:51.74 because the Bible says in Romans 12:13, 00:26:51.77\00:26:55.34 according to the measure of faith, 00:26:55.38\00:26:57.38 God has given you 00:26:57.41\00:26:59.48 which means, everyone has a measure of faith 00:26:59.51\00:27:02.38 and He gave it to us in Galatians 5:22, 00:27:02.42\00:27:05.92 He talks about the spirit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, 00:27:05.95\00:27:09.09 gentleness, goodness and faith. " 00:27:09.12\00:27:10.99 So we know for sure that faith is an action word 00:27:11.03\00:27:14.60 and there is more I can say about faith 00:27:14.63\00:27:16.93 and so many testimonies that I can share about faith 00:27:16.97\00:27:19.10 but because we had such a good time... we didn't get to that 00:27:19.13\00:27:22.64 so we're going to say a quick prayer, 00:27:22.67\00:27:24.31 "Father, we thank you for the examples in your Word 00:27:24.37\00:27:28.08 that show us that faith is an action word 00:27:28.11\00:27:30.45 and if we say that we are people of faith, 00:27:30.48\00:27:32.75 then we need to have the evidence 00:27:32.81\00:27:34.52 that would prove that our faith is real, it's alive 00:27:34.55\00:27:38.25 and it's moving. 00:27:38.29\00:27:39.62 Give us, Dear Lord, the spirit to continue to seek you 00:27:39.65\00:27:42.62 that our faith can become real 00:27:42.66\00:27:44.79 and our stories and our evidence would declare 00:27:44.83\00:27:47.73 that your Word is true, 00:27:47.76\00:27:49.16 we thank you, in the name of Jesus, amen. " 00:27:49.20\00:27:51.07 "Amen. " 00:27:51.10\00:27:52.43 Thank you so much, faith is a powerful thing 00:27:52.47\00:27:56.20 and remember that without faith, it is impossible to please God. 00:27:56.24\00:28:00.81 Join us next time 00:28:00.84\00:28:02.31 when Dr. Nadine brings the missing peace. 00:28:02.34\00:28:04.98
