sociologists are saying

that if we want to
be good at something,

we need to have a
role model, a somebody,

which is really
somebody who's good at the thing

that we would
like to be good at.

And so today, we're looking
at our perfect prayer example.

example in the Bible is Jesus.

going to examine Him,

His prayer life,

and how it can be
instructive for us

in developing the
habit of praying every day.

anything we want to be good at,

it seems to be a good idea.

I never really understood
that when I was growing up.

I didn't really have
role models early in life.

But I later saw
the benefits of it.

When I saw my friends

who had role models in the areas

that they were interested in,

like, those who
loved the singing,

they had role models,

you know, those
persons who were good singers,
00:03:00.11\00:03:01.94
and I saw how it
impacted what they were doing.

And so when we
examine our own prayer lives,

I think, if we can
get good role models,

and there are many in the Bible.

I chose Jesus as the
perfect prayer example

because we will
see throughout His life

the habit that He
had of praying every day.

Not just every day, but
He prayed about everything.

So I think He is that
perfect example for us.

And one of the first things
I noted about His prayer life

is that He did not do
a lot of public praying.

So they are only
recorded about three times

when He did public
praying actually in...

at the Tomb of Lazarus.

actually prayed that,

you know, the heavens would open

and He ask God,

Father, for hearing Me,

you always hear Me,

but I say it out
loud for the sake

of all these
people standing here

so that they will
believe You sent Me."

So that's one of
the first recorded times

that He actually
prayed in public.

There was another time
when He prayed in public

when He predicted
His death in Gethsemane.

And we find that
story in John 12:27-28,

and there He was
telling His father,

His soul was troubled
and He said, "Should I pray."

And then He prayed,

"Father, save me from this hour?

But this is the
very reason I came!

Father, bring
glory to Your name.

Then a voice spoke
from heaven, saying,

'I have already
brought glory to my name,

and I will do so again.'"

So this is the second
time He prayed in public.

And then, of course,

we know, when He
prayed at the Last Supper,

that was one of
the food or the last,

it was the food but
the last recorded time

when He actually prayed

when He looked up to
heaven and He told the Father,

"The hour has come.

Glorify Your Son

so He can give
glory back to You."

And that's in John 17:1.

So while there
isn't a problem really

with public praying,

a larger part
of our prayer lives

should be what
happens in the closet.

That's one of
the very first things

we can actually take away
from the prayer life of Jesus.

And that really
makes a lot of sense

because, I mean,
when you think about it,

you can cry out to God,

you can open and pour
out your heart to God, like,

you don't want to do
that in public per se.

Our prayer should be
not long winded in public

and making everybody depressed

with all of our
burdens in public

but that's why we have
that special private time.

And, you know, in Matthew
6:6 the Bible actually tells us,

"When you pray,
go away by yourself,

shut the door behind you,

and pray to your
Father in private."

And that was where
in Matthew? Matthew 6:6.

It says, "Then your Father,

who sees
everything will reward you."

So there we have some evidence
or something to backup the idea

that the majority of our prayer

should actually
be private prayers.

And so Jesus as our
perfect prayer example

demonstrated by His record

where He prayed
just three times,

let's say out of a 100,

a little over 97 % of the time

He was doing
actually closet prayers

or private prayers.

And since He
hardly prayed in public,

we still see the
effects of His private time

in His ministry

because they were able to see

how He was able
to heal the sick,

have the blind
to see, and so on.

So the impact of
His private praying

was demonstrated in
His public ministry,

so we can see that.

Another thing about
the prayer life of Jesus,

as our perfect example,

is the fact that He
made prayer personal.

So in the Old
Testament a lot of times

when we see
people praying to God,

He was referred
in very formal ways.

And one of the
formal ways was also Father,

but the Father was actually used

in specific instances

but in generally, you
know, very formal ways.

Now so we're friends now so

have different names

In the Old Testament
we see demonstrated people

praying to God with respect
where there is no problem

actually that's what we
should do pray with respect,

but it was very formal.

So now, you know, we
talk about having a father

and some people having a daddy.

And we know the connotation
is a little different.

Anybody could be a father,
but it takes a real kind of,

you know, nurturing
person for us to say,

"Hey, Daddy."

Now what Jesus
does in His prayer life

is revolutionized prayer.

Unpack that a little bit,

how did He revolutionize prayer?

You see, He
revolutionized prayer

from the formal
practice of addressing God

formally as
Heavenly Father or as Creator
00:07:56.37\00:07:59.61
which was the custom
in the Old Testament,
00:07:59.64\00:08:01.98
and what He did
in the New Testament
00:08:02.01\00:08:04.18
is that He
brought in a new concept
00:08:04.21\00:08:06.82
instead of just
Heavenly Father or Creator,
00:08:06.85\00:08:09.65
He began to refer
to His Father as Abba
00:08:09.68\00:08:13.29
and that is translated
00:08:13.32\00:08:14.79
to mean daddy,
dad, or even papa.

So there He was making

prayer familiar
or more familiar,

in a sense, than
just that formal thing.

Some people even
refer to that Abba sense as,

you know, childish blabbering,

you know, when kids are small

and they try to
say mumma or pappa,

that kind of a thing.

So just imagine if that is how,

you know, if that's the context

with which it is
really interpreted,

it means that,

know, there with daddy.

dependent on daddy, papa,"

you know, that kind of a thing

and that is what
He did with prayer.

So He was
actually the first person

to really demonstrate

what an intimate relationship
with His Father looked like.

And that's what we
did, you know, daddy, papa.

So because as we spoke about

that little difference between
just a father and a daddy.

So He made it more personal,
He made prayer something close,

something more intimate,

so He sets the example
that prayer is something

that we need to make personal

just between us and
Father or between us

and Daddy or
between us and Papa,

you know, that kind of thing.

And throughout the Bible,

we see Jesus
demonstrating that He had

that kind of
relationship with Daddy,

that personal relationship,

that is why He had the
habit of praying every day.

So He got up and prayed
in the morning, in Mark 1:35,

the Bible says,
"Very early in the morning,

while it was still
dark, Jesus got up,

left the house and went
off to a solitary place,
00:09:45.05\00:09:48.08
where He prayed."

So He had that
habit of going to meet

with Papa early in the morning.

that we need to consecrate.

And Jesus demonstrated that

out and meet His Dad.

Now usually evening time

day's work, right?

may try to relax, and stuff.

So not only did
He just say a prayer

You know, that kind

night in prayer with His Father.

He was there alone."

So we see there a
habit, a trend, you know.

another important thing

that He made it a priority,

pray in the morning,

That's the thing about it,

from personal experience

spend time seeking God.

I had an experience last year
when I was working on my book,

the first book I have in
the prayer series, right?

I had a lot of things to do

and I had my to-do list
from the evening before.

But that morning I
woke up and I began to pray

and I began to
share with God everything

that I had to do
because I felt so overwhelmed.

And while I was
there in His presence,

He began to
reorder my priorities list.

He told me what to do
instead. And I felt so good.

I stayed there
taking in everything

that He was giving me.

And it felt so good, I
really didn't want to leave

because I just felt
that sort of relaxed like,

yes, I have a
lot of things to do,

but because God

is now reordering it in my mind,

I began to feel
so much more relaxed.

You felt peace.
Yes, I had peace, right?

That's what I refer to as now.

It's like this state
where, you know, hey,

everything is going to be okay,

don't worry
about all that stuff.

Then when I got up from praying,

I run to the living room,

and I began to write things down

in the order that He gave me.

You will not
believe that the day

that I thought was
not enough, was too much.

'Cause I got
everything done so quickly

and then I got to do frivolous

other things like doing my hair.

At first I thought
I wouldn't have time

to even finish my list.

And so I realized

that sometimes we
shortchange ourselves

by rushing off from prayer.

Because when we are there,

He orders our steps so much

that what seems
to be so overwhelming

becomes nothing

because now He
not only blesses you

for spending time with Him,

but He sends,
you know, minister,

and angels to help you.

And Hebrews 1:14 promises that,

"I will send minister
and angels to help those

who are heirs of my kingdom."

And that is what happens

when we in His
presence so Jesus knew that.

And another thing
that we need to take note

about His prayer life

is that He
prayed about everything.

He prayed, for example,

before important
events like his baptism.

So, remember,

So many of us do not recognize
that Jesus is that good friend

blessing we mentioned earlier

about being able to
intercede with others.

pray for yourself,

we also need to
remember that the Holy Spirit,

Big Brother Jesus

helps in our weaknesses.

For example, we do not know
what God wants us to pray for.

But the Holy Spirit
prays for us with groanings

that cannot be
expressed in words."

And sometimes,
these groanings like

the groanings
of Jesus are tears.

We are crying and I am
