But he also realized 00:09:42.33\00:09:45.26 I've to turn around in terms of my lifestyle. 00:09:45.69\00:09:48.70 It was that time that he ran into I think he did 00:09:49.03\00:09:52.84 the research, and he found the material by 00:09:52.87\00:09:54.96 Dr. Esselstyn. from the Cleveland Clinic, 00:09:54.99\00:09:57.25 and you know he ready this book here, 00:09:57.55\00:09:59.30 you might have seen this here 00:09:59.46\00:10:01.45 Prevent and Reverse Heart Diseases. 00:10:01.76\00:10:03.89 In fact we did a program if I remember with him 00:10:04.59\00:10:06.86 if I remember. That's correct. He exceeded that significantly 00:10:47.70\00:10:50.38 and people are very hopeful that the President 00:10:50.41\00:10:54.04 will succeed in his one year experiment 00:10:54.07\00:10:56.74 with strictly planned based diet. 00:10:56.78\00:11:00.23 It makes a difference, it's the matter of fact 00:11:01.07\00:11:02.98 he boasted over the fact that he is back down 00:11:03.01\00:11:04.99 to the weight close to when he was in high school. 00:11:05.02\00:11:07.52 And you know that's not easily achievable specially 00:11:08.13\00:11:11.62 when we get older, and the natural gravity 00:11:11.65\00:11:13.39 in life takes over. She lives in 00:12:37.32\00:12:40.71 Kelowna British Columbia, and that's where Chip 00:12:40.74\00:12:43.86 really took off in a big way right Dr. Diehl. 00:12:43.89\00:12:46.78 I made about four thousand people there 00:12:46.98\00:12:48.78 in several programs combined and I think your 00:12:49.36\00:12:51.97 sister was there. Yes, and she said you know 00:12:52.00\00:12:54.98 there is this great thing going on out here, 00:12:55.01\00:12:57.26 you really ought to come out, and it took a few 00:12:57.29\00:13:01.32 years of encouraging me and finally I did go 00:13:01.35\00:13:04.00 and I attended one of the CHIP's summits received 00:13:04.58\00:13:08.11 the training to be a CHIP Director, 00:13:08.14\00:13:10.00 and got all inspired came back home to 00:13:10.03\00:13:13.52 Thief River Falls and thought about it 00:13:13.55\00:13:15.18 and said I think this is going to be too hard, 00:13:15.21\00:13:18.14 and I promptly let it sit on the shelf for another 00:13:18.44\00:13:21.71 couple of years, and then I went back to another 00:13:21.74\00:13:24.81 CHIP summit and figured it then, okay 00:13:24.84\00:13:28.78 I see ordinary people getting involved in this, 00:13:28.81\00:13:33.09 I think its time for us to do it, and so doors 00:13:33.12\00:13:37.59 opened up in some really exciting ways 00:13:37.62\00:13:40.30 and we launched and we've been going 00:13:40.33\00:13:43.31 out it since January of 2006. 00:13:43.34\00:13:45.97 So, immediately it's not an easy thing when you first 00:13:46.00\00:13:48.52 look at it at least from your perspective, 00:13:48.55\00:13:50.07 you thought well this is not what I want to do. 00:13:50.10\00:13:52.29 It is intensive, and it takes a team, this is not 00:13:53.01\00:13:58.81 a one man show. It takes a team, 00:13:58.84\00:14:02.12 and gathering that team is sometimes challenging, 00:14:02.15\00:14:05.80 but we just are grateful for wonderful alumni 00:14:05.97\00:14:10.49 who come out and help us time after time 00:14:10.52\00:14:14.89 with the programs, and we got a great 00:14:14.92\00:14:17.49 team back at Thief River Falls. 00:14:17.52\00:14:19.26 Now, you participated in the program from the 00:14:19.29\00:14:21.89 organizational side or from the beneficial side, 00:14:21.92\00:14:25.40 which your from both. Well, that I never 00:14:25.43\00:14:29.28 had a chance to attend CHIP as a student 00:14:29.31\00:14:32.29 before actually facilitating a program, 00:14:32.79\00:14:35.19 so I was kind of a teacher and a student 00:14:35.76\00:14:39.36 at a same time, as well as doing some of the 00:14:39.39\00:14:42.26 cooking and I want you to know that I boiled 00:14:42.29\00:14:45.10 over the oat meal and burn the toast on more 00:14:45.13\00:14:47.29 than one occasion. But that first brave class 00:14:47.32\00:14:50.86 that went through began to prove to us 00:14:50.89\00:14:54.22 and to me in particular, this is powerful stuff. 00:14:54.25\00:14:58.66 We had one lady who was diabetic on two 00:14:59.28\00:15:02.51 medications, two weeks into the program began 00:15:02.54\00:15:05.88 telling me, I can't walk like that I used to have 00:15:05.91\00:15:09.08 to stop and catch my breathe and she was 00:15:09.11\00:15:11.83 beating herself up over this, and I advised her 00:15:11.86\00:15:15.55 that she needed to see her physician to check 00:15:15.58\00:15:18.31 on her medications, and she came back yippy 00:15:18.34\00:15:22.25 I love one of my pills already, and she was so 00:15:22.28\00:15:25.96 excited at that point there was no stopping us, 00:15:25.99\00:15:29.97 because when you are two weeks into a brand 00:15:30.00\00:15:32.17 new program that you are not sure about 00:15:32.20\00:15:33.95 and someone has success that quickly, 00:15:33.98\00:15:37.04 you know you are dealing with powerful. 00:15:37.07\00:15:39.19 The great motivator to continue going on 00:15:39.22\00:15:40.37 further into that. Now with 00:41:06.82\00:41:09.73 the drop did your physician reduce the medication? 00:41:09.76\00:41:12.99 Yeah after that I went into my doctor 00:41:13.02\00:41:15.51 and of course he says a lot of people go on 00:41:15.54\00:41:17.86 diets and do things and it doesn't last 00:41:17.89\00:41:19.80 but he reduced two pills and he cut in half 00:41:19.83\00:41:23.10 and another one he lowered too, and later on 00:41:23.85\00:41:26.71 we've been cutting our pills, eventually we are 00:41:26.74\00:41:30.28 going to get rid of most of them I hope so. 00:41:30.31\00:41:32.21 But yeah since I am on it, but yeah that's a pretty 00:41:32.24\00:41:35.10 big drop and also I mean my blood pressure dropped, 00:41:35.13\00:41:38.16 your heart beat drops, lot of other stuff. 00:41:38.19\00:41:41.15 You know cholesterol of 200 is kind of 00:41:41.18\00:41:45.02 considered normal sort of acceptable number 00:41:45.05\00:41:48.99 for most clinical practitioners. 00:41:49.02\00:41:51.79 Your physician was very concerned about 00:41:52.37\00:41:54.60 obviously your cholesterol which is perhaps the 00:41:54.72\00:41:57.52 most important indicator of how your heart 00:41:57.55\00:42:01.34 is doing and acting. So at 171 that was actually 00:42:01.37\00:42:05.97 pretty good. He was probably feeling pretty 00:42:06.00\00:42:08.20 good about is. We like to see that at 160, 00:42:08.23\00:42:10.52 but you are almost there. But then you come 00:42:10.55\00:42:12.97 in the CHIP program and its down to 117, 00:42:13.00\00:42:17.00 I mean that's unheard of it, this is what you 00:42:17.32\00:42:18.91 find in rural population groups in China 00:42:18.94\00:42:22.21 where you don't find artery disease. What your physician say 00:42:43.31\00:42:46.23 when he saw 117, was he kind of surprise? 00:42:46.26\00:42:49.14 Yes he was, he was very surprised, 00:42:49.17\00:42:51.11 and I said hey why didn't you talked to me 00:42:51.45\00:42:54.64 about eating the right food. What is the matter, 00:42:54.67\00:42:57.05 I was kind of mad at him, why didn't 00:42:57.08\00:42:59.49 you tell me this, what is the matter with you guys. 00:42:59.52\00:43:01.48 And he said I probably told you to quit 00:43:01.88\00:43:03.58 eating salt and doing this stuff but would 00:43:03.61\00:43:05.22 you listen. He said I only got five minutes 00:43:05.25\00:43:07.59 to tell you, and he won't listen anyway so, 00:43:07.62\00:43:09.42 they don't have a big program to do that 00:43:10.29\00:43:12.15 which is surprising to me. But you know 00:43:12.18\00:43:14.95 this is also very important point to make here, 00:43:14.98\00:43:16.98 you see the dilemma of our condition. 00:43:17.01\00:43:19.06 You have ten minutes time at best to diagnose 00:43:19.62\00:43:24.82 the match up with the pill and sent you home 00:43:24.85\00:43:27.43 with a bill right, ten minutes. Tell us why you came 00:52:25.64\00:52:28.56 into the CHIP program? What were the reasons? 00:52:28.59\00:52:30.65 Okay, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure 00:52:31.46\00:52:36.68 and it was probably 2003 and I tried one 00:52:37.35\00:52:46.86 dietician and it made me so busy I thought 00:52:46.89\00:52:50.47 this for the word, and it wasn't 00:52:50.50\00:52:55.35 that bad, so I thought okay I will just wait 00:52:55.38\00:52:58.37 and slowly my blood pressure creeped higher 00:52:59.00\00:53:02.52 and it was probably over 140 over 90, 00:53:03.40\00:53:07.64 and my doctor advised me on a beta-blocker. 00:53:08.53\00:53:12.31 I took it for three years and I tolerated it okay, 00:53:13.28\00:53:19.68 I didn't feel quite right but it really 00:53:19.71\00:53:22.69 didn't help my blood pressure. 00:53:22.72\00:53:23.93 My pulse came down, but my blood pressure 00:53:24.72\00:53:28.17 kept going higher. So when I got to 00:53:28.20\00:53:33.43 160 over 100, I had to try something else. 00:53:33.46\00:53:37.79 So that began my quest for a blood pressure 00:53:39.17\00:53:42.51 medication that I found, I could not tolerated 00:53:42.54\00:53:47.81 anything I tried, and for some of them I tried 00:53:47.84\00:53:54.01 for a two week and some for a month 00:53:54.04\00:53:57.54 and some for two months and I can't tell you 00:53:58.24\00:54:01.83 the array of side effects I have. 00:54:01.86\00:54:05.08 I was working full time as a nurse, 00:54:06.00\00:54:09.29 and I saw many days difficult to get through. 00:54:10.60\00:54:13.93 I had such terrible symptoms like pounding heart rate 00:54:14.94\00:54:20.04 and that was something a Beta-blockers, 00:54:20.45\00:54:22.42 and the doctors were all skeptical, no, no, 00:54:23.14\00:54:27.48 you wouldn't get that from beta blocker. Wow, 00:54:27.51\00:54:30.53 that's amazing. But then he increased my dose, 00:54:30.56\00:54:34.15 he doubled it and it was even worse, 00:54:34.26\00:54:36.53 so I knew it was from that medication. Okay, Dawn, 00:54:36.97\00:54:41.90 But I tried many different things. Yeah, 00:54:41.93\00:54:45.46 so Dawn as a nurse you tried several medications 00:54:45.62\00:54:49.12 to get your blood pressure under control 00:54:49.15\00:54:50.78 and side effects. Yes. We are really not giving 00:54:50.96\00:54:56.13 you a chance to carry out your work anymore. 00:54:56.16\00:54:58.39 It was very difficult, so then you come to CHIP, 00:54:58.42\00:55:00.98 and what happened after the four week 00:55:01.01\00:55:02.63 CHIP program, what happened since then. 00:55:02.66\00:55:04.04 Okay, I had seen an article about CHIP 00:55:04.94\00:55:09.11 in the newspaper and I have that in back of my 00:55:09.59\00:55:13.71 mind call Marilyne Sayler because the last 00:55:13.74\00:55:17.24 medication they tried, it was my fourteenth 00:55:17.27\00:55:20.61 or fifteenth medication.
