brand of the culture

Bible is not silent on this

matter either.

The Bible talks
about expression,

the Bible has no
problem with expression,

the Bible has no
problem with culture in fact,

but we did see that once
again there are guidelines

and how we are to
express ourselves.

expression is indicative

of what is in the heart,
the condition of the heart.

about the expression

the context of fashion

fashion but fashion in general.

What does the Bible, number one,

does the Bible have
anything to say about it?

Number two, if it does,
you know, where is that?

Because we see
cultural expression in fashion

and, you know, a
lot of people, you know,

go to extremes on
one end or the other.

This is true.

But how can we find balance,

how can we know
what the Bible says

and what are the
principles that govern

how we interpret the
expression through fashion.

Well, I would first start

by just taking a look
at the Book of 1 John 2.

And the reason why is

we're highlighting fashion

rather than let's
say street language

or street entrepreneurship.

Even though we can
touch on those things as well

why fashion is something
worthy of in-depth study

is because it
does fit so many molds

of what the Bible speaks of.

As an example the scriptures

something about the world,

term the world a lot,

the world or worldly
and things of that nature.

And I think we
would do well to consider.

In fact perhaps
before we do 1 John 2,

In James 4, the Bible
makes a very profound statement

about the world and

stronger foundation

for those who want to serve God

and to love Him and to know Him

and to do the
things that please Him.

When we look at James 4,
the Bible says in verse 4,

"Ye adulterers and adulteresses,

know ye not that the
friendship of the world

is enmity with God?
00:05:10.44\00:05:12.67
Whosoever therefore
will be a friend of the world
00:05:12.71\00:05:15.38
is the enemy of God."

It's a very definite
statement that James states here

that to be a friend or to
be friendly with the world

and its ways, it
is the enemy of God.

But the thing is,

is that what really
constitutes the world,

you know, as we
were looking at it here.

Well, if we were to
look at 1 John 2 now,

it's gonna talk about
things that make up the world

and then we can understand
better why God hates this.

And He says, "Any of those
who are friends of the world

are enemies of God et cetera."

It says in 1 John 2,

we're gonna look
at verses 15 and 16.

It says, "Love not the world,

neither the things
that are in the world.

If any man love the world,

the love of the
Father is not in him.

For all that is in the
world, the lust of the flesh,

and the lust of the
eyes, and the pride of life,

is not of the
Father, but is of the world."

So when we're
thinking of the world,

we're thinking about something
that God disapproves of.

He does not want His
people connected to it

nor reflecting it

and He does not certainly want
us developing a love for it.

And then he goes on to
tell us that the things

that are in the world

that He wants us
to stay away from

are things that pertain
to the lust of the flesh,

the lust of the eyes,

and the pride of life
which fashion fits all three.

And this is why fashion
kind of has a greater highlight

than some of the other
elements that were mentioned.

Fashion definitely
promotes lust of the flesh,

it definitely
promotes lust of the eyes,

and it definitely
promotes pride of life.

It is for these reasons that
we have to give some attention

to the subject of
fashion and there is no way

that we can cover this in-depth,

you know, in the
depth that it deserves.

So we kind of have to look

at some key
principles from the Bible

and then see what the Lord says.

One of the things
that you will find

that's really, really huge

in the practice of
many in hip-hop culture
00:07:04.39\00:07:07.66
is tattooing the body.
00:07:07.69\00:07:09.69
It is something that
individuals do especially
00:07:09.72\00:07:13.09
when they want to
honor friends, relatives,
00:07:13.13\00:07:16.90
even some of their ancestors,
00:07:16.93\00:07:19.03
et cetera
throughout hip-hop culture
00:07:19.07\00:07:21.57
and they want to honor
them by putting a tattoo
00:07:21.60\00:07:24.57
on their body and
saying whether they love them,
00:07:24.61\00:07:26.57
telling rest in peace
and all these other things.
00:07:26.61\00:07:28.84
But the Bible does have a
very specific statement on this
00:07:28.88\00:07:31.28
that we can find in
the Book of Leviticus.
00:07:31.31\00:07:33.31
In Leviticus 19, the
Bible speaks on this point
00:07:33.35\00:07:37.85
and it says in Leviticus 19.
00:07:37.89\00:07:40.26
And again I want us to
remember that you, this is why,
00:07:40.29\00:07:45.03
you know, I learned
something a long time ago
00:07:45.06\00:07:46.90
as we get ready to
look at Leviticus 19.

When I was growing up,
00:07:49.83\00:07:51.87
I saw pictures of a white Jesus,
00:07:51.90\00:07:56.30
white angels, white
patriarchs, white prophets,
00:07:56.34\00:08:00.51
and white apostles, et cetera.
00:08:00.54\00:08:02.31
So when I looked at the Bible,
00:08:02.34\00:08:03.91
it appeared to me
very, very European.
00:08:03.95\00:08:06.21
And this is what people
were filtering, you know,
00:08:06.25\00:08:08.88
they were pushing
this in my mind real hard.
00:08:08.92\00:08:10.99
They were saying, "Hey,
you know the Bible stay away
00:08:11.02\00:08:13.49
from it, it's not
for black people,"
00:08:13.52\00:08:15.82
and all these other things.
00:08:15.86\00:08:17.19
And I started to
buy into it quite a bit,
00:08:17.23\00:08:18.79
and I went to an extreme
00:08:18.83\00:08:21.00
where I started
to reject the Bible.
00:08:21.03\00:08:22.50
Now I know that the
Bible is very much centered
00:08:22.53\00:08:25.13
in all nations,
kindred, tongues and people.
00:08:25.17\00:08:27.37
And as Acts 17 says, "We
are all made of one blood."

So I respect
that principle today
00:08:30.17\00:08:32.01
and that's what I
stand by, praise God.

But back then I had
to admit that, you know,

some of these prejudices
00:08:36.44\00:08:37.78
and things were being
heavily pushed in my mind.

Well, when I started
to look at Afrocentricity

and started to try to
identify it in the Bible

which I did, there's
lots of it in the Bible.

But even outside
of the Bible, man,

I started buying
African everything.

I mean, I would get,
you know, African dolls

and I would get
all sorts of shirts

that would represent
different tribes of Africa

and you know and I had
to learn not everything

from Africa was good.

Right.

And you know,
and believe it or not

that was kind of like a
shock to me at a time in my life

because, you know,

I was having
through hip-hop culture

push so hard the Asiatic,
African Asiatic black man

and you know we
are the original men

and, you know, all these things

that was really
pushed real strong.

So I began to think because
of the pigmentation of my skin

that this kind of
elevated me to a God like level

and now I'm feeling
like, yeah, I'm the man,
00:09:30.00\00:09:32.03
you know, I have certain powers
00:09:32.07\00:09:33.90
and authorities
that was ordained of me
00:09:33.94\00:09:36.14
because "I'm black".
00:09:36.17\00:09:38.11
Well, as I started to
have my mind open more,

you know, I began
to see not everything
00:09:41.41\00:09:43.08
from Africa was good,
00:09:43.11\00:09:44.68
and it was educational

because there was
a lot of heathenism,

paganism, there was a
lot of child sacrifice,

there was voodoo.

There was a lot of
things that took place in Africa

that was not good.

And we have to understand
that and the way I found out

they weren't good was
comparing it to Scripture.

Well, one of the
things you would find is that

there was a lot of tattooing,

there was a lot of
different tattoos and writings

if you will that was put

or painted on the
individuals of different tribes

to represent certain things.

And that would be kind
of the credence to today

while someone would say,
"Hey, this is why tattooing

is okay even especially of those

who have
deceased and passed on."

But when we put this thought
to the test of Scripture,

we see that the Bible says
in Leviticus 19:28, it says,

"Ye shall not make any cuttings
in your flesh for the dead,

nor print any marks
upon you, I am the Lord."

So God made it clear,

cutting up your body,

I don't want you putting
these markings upon your body.

Remember we
looked at a principle

that stated our
bodies are temples

that God desires to dwell in.

But He said I bought your body,

I bought it with
the precious price

of My Son's blood,

therefore
glorify God in your body.

And the way that you
glorify God in your body

is that you would
do what the Bible says
