Hello. I'm Dwayne. And I'm Lance. 00:00:29.49\00:00:31.49 And we'd like to welcome you to another episode of TKS, 00:00:31.53\00:00:34.43 A True Knowledge of Self, 00:00:34.46\00:00:35.80 where we get to know ourselves from a Biblical perspective. 00:00:35.83\00:00:38.83 In our previous episode, 00:00:38.87\00:00:40.20 we started dealing with the subject 00:00:40.24\00:00:42.17 of cultural expressions, 00:00:42.20\00:00:43.97 and we wanna talk much more about this 00:00:44.01\00:00:45.54 'cause there's some important points and principles 00:00:45.57\00:00:47.28 we wanna bring out from God's word. 00:00:47.31\00:00:49.31 Now, expression is kind of 00:00:49.34\00:00:50.71 the hallmark of hip-hop culture, 00:00:50.75\00:00:53.42 and popular culture, many cultures, you know, 00:00:53.45\00:00:57.05 pride themselves on their freedom 00:00:57.09\00:00:59.42 to express themselves. 00:00:59.45\00:01:01.06 And we, 00:01:01.09\00:01:03.66 and the Bible for that matter is not against, 00:01:03.69\00:01:05.76 God is not against cultural expression, 00:01:05.79\00:01:07.73 God values culture. 00:01:07.76\00:01:09.10 In fact, God created culture. 00:01:09.13\00:01:10.90 But we know and we discussed that as 00:01:10.93\00:01:12.77 culture drifted away from God via the practice, 00:01:12.80\00:01:15.87 and indulgence, and sin, then culture, man's culture, 00:01:15.90\00:01:18.74 became degraded as well. 00:01:18.77\00:01:20.61 And so in our efforts to minister 00:01:20.64\00:01:23.98 to those various cultures, 00:01:24.01\00:01:26.65 in effort to meet people where they are as Christ did, 00:01:26.68\00:01:30.45 and to minister to the needs of society, 00:01:30.49\00:01:33.99 we respect culture as well 00:01:34.02\00:01:35.42 and, in fact, we read in I Corinthians 9, 00:01:35.46\00:01:37.73 that Paul himself, 00:01:37.76\00:01:39.69 through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, 00:01:39.73\00:01:41.46 in an effort to more effectively reach people, 00:01:41.50\00:01:44.27 he became a Roman to the Romans, 00:01:44.30\00:01:46.17 he became a Jew to the Jews, 00:01:46.20\00:01:48.07 so that he might win individuals to Christ. 00:01:48.10\00:01:51.47 And so what that is saying 00:01:51.51\00:01:54.44 is that we are to make every effort possible 00:01:54.48\00:01:57.15 within the realm of truth to meet people where they are, 00:01:57.18\00:02:00.72 to minister to their needs, to win their confidence, 00:02:00.75\00:02:03.69 to have, show sympathy for them in measurable acts, 00:02:03.72\00:02:07.26 to, in order to direct them to a better way, 00:02:07.29\00:02:09.72 and understand that people need time for growth, 00:02:09.76\00:02:11.93 and that this process of coming to the Lord as a relationship, 00:02:11.96\00:02:15.26 it's not something that just instantaneously happens, 00:02:15.30\00:02:17.80 it's not about simple, you know, 00:02:17.83\00:02:20.30 blind obedience, 00:02:20.34\00:02:23.54 or an idea where 00:02:23.57\00:02:26.11 God is interested in robotic compulsory 00:02:26.14\00:02:29.78 religious practice, 00:02:29.81\00:02:31.25 it is the desire for God to love man 00:02:31.28\00:02:34.75 and for man to love God 00:02:34.78\00:02:36.48 and that is a reciprocal relationship. 00:02:36.52\00:02:38.75 So all these things taken into consideration, 00:02:38.79\00:02:41.89 we talked about what is expected. 00:02:41.92\00:02:46.59 But we also discussed the limitation. 00:02:46.63\00:02:48.50 So the limitation to this idea of respecting of culture 00:02:48.53\00:02:51.23 and meeting people where they are 00:02:51.27\00:02:52.73 is that, whenever I engage in an effort to reach people, 00:02:52.77\00:02:56.57 I never am obliged Biblically to compromise the truth. 00:02:56.60\00:03:03.11 So we use several examples, 00:03:03.14\00:03:04.55 and we're gonna continue to go down this line 00:03:04.58\00:03:06.28 because although God desires me to respect culture, 00:03:06.31\00:03:11.79 wherever that culture deviates from the truth, 00:03:11.82\00:03:14.66 that is what God is not going to assert, 00:03:14.69\00:03:17.19 and that's what we as human beings 00:03:17.23\00:03:19.16 cannot accept it either. 00:03:19.19\00:03:21.03 So this idea of cultural expression, 00:03:21.06\00:03:24.80 God is not against expression. 00:03:24.83\00:03:26.43 God is not against culture. 00:03:26.47\00:03:27.80 God is not against the fact 00:03:27.84\00:03:29.54 that there's different languages, 00:03:29.57\00:03:30.94 and different, you know, foods, and different things like that. 00:03:30.97\00:03:34.01 But, however, at the same time, God does say, 00:03:34.04\00:03:37.01 "This is appropriate language, this is not." 00:03:37.05\00:03:38.45 God does say, 00:03:38.48\00:03:39.81 "This is food that 00:03:39.85\00:03:41.18 I made for human beings to eat, this is not." 00:03:41.22\00:03:42.55 So there are, there are limitations. 00:03:42.58\00:03:44.95 And so expression is great, 00:03:44.99\00:03:46.96 but what kind of expression is the question. 00:03:46.99\00:03:48.82 So God never ever wanted us to express everything 00:03:48.86\00:03:53.70 that comes to our mind, isn't that correct? 00:03:53.73\00:03:55.06 That's correct. 00:03:55.10\00:03:56.43 And there's a reason why, because you're gonna find that, 00:03:56.46\00:03:58.73 if we study the Bible carefully, 00:03:58.77\00:04:00.27 God first and foremost, wanted us to guard our minds. 00:04:00.30\00:04:03.24 In the book of I Peter 1 as an example, 00:04:03.27\00:04:06.27 the Bible actually told us something 00:04:06.31\00:04:07.84 really important about the mind 00:04:07.88\00:04:10.31 and there's a lot that the Bible says about the mind. 00:04:10.35\00:04:12.45 I did a study on it one time 00:04:12.48\00:04:13.82 and I was amazed at what I found. 00:04:13.85\00:04:15.75 And the Bible says in the book of I Peter 1, 00:04:15.78\00:04:19.25 and it's right there in verse 13, that it says, 00:04:19.29\00:04:22.89 "Wherefore gird up 00:04:22.92\00:04:25.23 the loins of your mind, be sober, 00:04:25.26\00:04:28.43 and hope to the end for the grace 00:04:28.46\00:04:30.07 that is to be brought unto you 00:04:30.10\00:04:31.53 at the revelation of Jesus Christ." 00:04:31.57\00:04:34.14 The Bible encourages us to be in a sober state of mind, 00:04:34.17\00:04:38.11 a mind that is not inebriated, if you will. 00:04:38.14\00:04:40.74 A mind that is clear and able to focus. 00:04:40.78\00:04:43.41 Now there was a reason for that. 00:04:43.45\00:04:44.91 The reason is that something happens 00:04:44.95\00:04:47.98 whenever we allow things to come into our minds. 00:04:48.02\00:04:50.29 And it says this in the book of Proverbs, 00:04:50.32\00:04:52.15 the 23 chapter, "Why is God so concerned?" 00:04:52.19\00:04:55.09 And, I mean, really, you can go from verse to verse, 00:04:55.12\00:04:57.69 the Bible talks about in Romans 12:1-2 00:04:57.73\00:05:02.46 where it talks about the transforming of the mind, 00:05:02.50\00:05:05.57 "Be not conformed to the world 00:05:05.60\00:05:07.67 but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." 00:05:07.70\00:05:10.51 Et-cetera. 00:05:10.54\00:05:11.87 So God is really, really focused on the mind 00:05:11.91\00:05:13.88 and the reason is very simple, two points that I'm gonna show. 00:05:13.91\00:05:17.18 The first one is in Proverbs 23. 00:05:17.21\00:05:19.21 In Proverbs 23, right there in verse 7, 00:05:19.25\00:05:23.55 here's what the Bible says, 00:05:23.59\00:05:24.92 and this is one reason 00:05:24.95\00:05:26.59 why God definitely wants us to be careful 00:05:26.62\00:05:28.49 what we even let in our minds, 00:05:28.52\00:05:30.09 let alone express from our minds. 00:05:30.13\00:05:32.33 The Bible says in Proverbs 23:7, 00:05:32.36\00:05:35.03 "For as he thinketh in his heart, 00:05:35.06\00:05:38.47 so is he." 00:05:38.50\00:05:40.60 Now we don't use this organ in the center of our chest 00:05:40.64\00:05:43.77 that beats and pumps our blood to think, 00:05:43.81\00:05:45.64 but we do use this organ in our head called the brain. 00:05:45.67\00:05:48.18 And when the Bible was talking about, you know, 00:05:48.21\00:05:51.48 guarding the heart or whatsoever, 00:05:51.51\00:05:53.28 "A man thinketh in his heart..." 00:05:53.31\00:05:54.98 He's actually referring to the mind and not to the, 00:05:55.02\00:05:57.09 you know, organ in the center of our chest. 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.05 So God was saying, 00:05:59.09\00:06:00.42 "Whatsoever goes on in your mind 00:06:00.46\00:06:02.29 is going to come out in your character." 00:06:02.32\00:06:05.03 It is for this reason that we are to guard 00:06:05.06\00:06:07.63 what we allow in our minds. 00:06:07.66\00:06:10.20 And then we are to guard 00:06:10.23\00:06:11.83 what we are to express from our minds. 00:06:11.87\00:06:14.37 And how do we know that? 00:06:14.40\00:06:15.74 Well, let's consider this 00:06:15.77\00:06:17.11 and I thought this text was really powerful. 00:06:17.14\00:06:18.47 It's Proverbs 13. 00:06:18.51\00:06:20.58 In Proverbs 13, this is what the Bible says. 00:06:20.61\00:06:24.25 And this is why we cannot think that just 00:06:24.28\00:06:26.58 because something goes on in the mind, 00:06:26.61\00:06:28.92 means that we are in full-blown liberty to share it. 00:06:28.95\00:06:31.52 And I'm gonna balance this out in just a minute, 00:06:31.55\00:06:32.95 but watch this. 00:06:32.99\00:06:34.32 In Proverbs 13, it says in verse 3, 00:06:34.36\00:06:36.96 and this is actually 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.33 a quote from the Good News Translation which I thought, 00:06:38.36\00:06:40.63 brought the thought out more forcefully. 00:06:40.66\00:06:42.20 It says, 00:06:42.23\00:06:43.57 "Be careful what you say and protect your life. 00:06:43.60\00:06:47.84 A careless talker destroys himself." 00:06:47.87\00:06:51.47 So when an individual can become careless, 00:06:51.51\00:06:54.61 when they can get to the point where they say, 00:06:54.64\00:06:55.98 "I don't care, I must just say what's on my mind." 00:06:56.01\00:06:58.18 I mean, I grew up in a household, you know, 00:06:58.21\00:07:00.12 we, you know, and being a black man, 00:07:00.15\00:07:01.58 this is often, this is often been labeled, 00:07:01.62\00:07:03.65 you know, the "black attitude", you know, 00:07:03.69\00:07:05.15 and especially towards our sisters, 00:07:05.19\00:07:06.52 the "black women", you know, 00:07:06.55\00:07:07.89 they just speak their minds, I say what I wanna say, 00:07:07.92\00:07:09.59 nobody is the boss of me and, you know, 00:07:09.62\00:07:11.33 all of these different terms 00:07:11.36\00:07:12.76 and people just believe I can just, 00:07:12.79\00:07:14.90 just because I'm thinking it, means go ahead and express it. 00:07:14.93\00:07:18.83 Or feel it. Or feel it. 00:07:18.87\00:07:20.47 And then go ahead and just experiment it. 00:07:20.50\00:07:22.94 But the Bible teaches something 00:07:22.97\00:07:24.57 that the natural heart does not like, 00:07:24.61\00:07:26.88 it's called restraint. 00:07:26.91\00:07:28.84 It's a word that, you know, it's a shame 00:07:28.88\00:07:32.48 because even when you look at hip-hop culture, 00:07:32.51\00:07:34.02 you know, a lot of what hip-hop culture, 00:07:34.05\00:07:37.22 the way it was birth was through oppression, 00:07:37.25\00:07:40.12 it was through subjection, and through powers that be, 00:07:40.16\00:07:43.83 that were trying to hold brothers down. 00:07:43.86\00:07:46.06 You know, they can't hold me down, 00:07:46.09\00:07:47.43 you know, there's lots of songs 00:07:47.46\00:07:48.80 that used to come out in that nature, 00:07:48.83\00:07:50.17 you can't hold me down, I'm gonna get up, 00:07:50.20\00:07:51.53 I'm gonna rise above, and I'mma do what I got to do. 00:07:51.57\00:07:53.90 But here it is that God himself, 00:07:53.94\00:07:55.97 He endorses not like how man applies it, 00:07:56.00\00:07:58.51 but God nevertheless, 00:07:58.54\00:07:59.87 He does endorse the idea of restraint. 00:07:59.91\00:08:02.28 God believes just because you feel something 00:08:02.31\00:08:05.15 does not mean you should do it. 00:08:05.18\00:08:07.05 Just because you're thinking something, 00:08:07.08\00:08:09.08 does not mean you should express it. 00:08:09.12\00:08:10.85 And just because you're thinking something, 00:08:10.89\00:08:13.36 does not mean you should keep thinking it. 00:08:13.39\00:08:14.82 Yeah. 00:08:14.86\00:08:16.19 As an example, if we were to look at what the Bible says, 00:08:16.22\00:08:18.36 as we consider II Corinthians 10. 00:08:18.39\00:08:20.93 This is a powerful point. 00:08:20.96\00:08:22.40 Because I think a lot of times the deception is that, 00:08:22.43\00:08:25.23 you know, I can do what I want, when I want, 00:08:25.27\00:08:27.94 how I want, because I am who I am 00:08:27.97\00:08:30.11 or even another thought of a video clip 00:08:30.14\00:08:32.11 that I think we should play 00:08:32.14\00:08:33.48 that's gonna actually bring some points out 00:08:33.51\00:08:35.04 in just a second. 00:08:35.08\00:08:36.41 In II Corinthians 10, the Bible says, in verse 3, 00:08:36.44\00:08:41.15 "For though we walk in the flesh, 00:08:41.18\00:08:43.42 we do not war after the flesh, 00:08:43.45\00:08:45.65 for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, 00:08:45.69\00:08:48.39 but mighty through God 00:08:48.42\00:08:49.79 to the pulling down of strong holds..." 00:08:49.82\00:08:51.66 Now watch this, 00:08:51.69\00:08:53.03 "Casting down imaginations, 00:08:53.06\00:08:55.43 and every high thing that exalts itself 00:08:55.46\00:08:58.33 against the knowledge of God, 00:08:58.37\00:09:00.47 and bringing into captivity every..." 00:09:00.50\00:09:02.94 What? 00:09:02.97\00:09:04.31 "Thought to the obedience of Christ." 00:09:04.34\00:09:06.98 So notice that God actually believes in restraint, 00:09:07.01\00:09:10.81 not with just what you say, 00:09:10.85\00:09:12.71 not with just what you do but even with what you think. 00:09:12.75\00:09:17.39 Not every thought that comes in your head 00:09:17.42\00:09:19.39 should be entertained. 00:09:19.42\00:09:21.09 Some of these things need to be brought 00:09:21.12\00:09:22.82 under the subjection of Christ and we need to ask God, 00:09:22.86\00:09:24.83 "Lord, take away these thoughts 00:09:24.86\00:09:26.56 because this has nothing to do with Your character, 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.76 Your righteousness, 00:09:28.80\00:09:30.13 or for the betterment of my future." 00:09:30.17\00:09:31.63 So it is when it comes to the words that we speak 00:09:31.67\00:09:34.70 as it's stated, you know, 00:09:34.74\00:09:36.17 "Be careful what you say and protect your life. 00:09:36.20\00:09:38.67 A careless talker destroys himself." 00:09:38.71\00:09:40.98 Another one in Ecclesiastes 5:2, it says, 00:09:41.01\00:09:45.91 "Be not rash with thy mouth, 00:09:45.95\00:09:48.52 and let not thine heart be hasty 00:09:48.55\00:09:51.05 to utter anything before God, 00:09:51.09\00:09:53.59 for God is in heaven and thou upon earth, 00:09:53.62\00:09:56.32 herefore let thy words be few." 00:09:56.36\00:09:59.13 God teaches this principle of restraint, 00:09:59.16\00:10:01.83 just because you're thinking it, 00:10:01.86\00:10:03.40 just because you're feeling it, 00:10:03.43\00:10:05.13 does not mean you have to express it. 00:10:05.17\00:10:07.00 We have thoughts, words, and feelings 00:10:07.04\00:10:10.14 that all need to sometimes be restrained, 00:10:10.17\00:10:13.78 held back because it would not produce good fruit. 00:10:13.81\00:10:16.64 Unfortunately, you see a lot of these things happen today. 00:10:16.68\00:10:19.31 It's kind of like an individual that gets tired 00:10:19.35\00:10:21.78 of things happening in our world 00:10:21.82\00:10:24.12 and it's okay to be tired of oppression, 00:10:24.15\00:10:27.56 as an example, I'm gonna speak to present issues right now. 00:10:27.59\00:10:30.69 You know, what, I'm a father of four children, 00:10:30.73\00:10:33.63 two boys, two girls. 00:10:33.66\00:10:35.00 My oldest son is 16 and then my other son is 14. 00:10:35.03\00:10:38.53 They are young black men, and we live in America, 00:10:38.57\00:10:42.10 and we have to pay attention to things 00:10:42.14\00:10:43.64 that are happening in our society today. 00:10:43.67\00:10:46.07 Right now, there's a challenge going on 00:10:46.11\00:10:48.34 when it comes to young black men and sometimes, 00:10:48.38\00:10:51.95 police officers and things of this nature. 00:10:51.98\00:10:54.32 So I had to begin to instruct my son, to say 00:10:54.35\00:10:56.18 "Son, listen, you know, 00:10:56.22\00:10:57.55 if a police officer comes to you 00:10:57.59\00:10:59.65 and they ask you to do something 00:10:59.69\00:11:01.09 or tell you to do something, 00:11:01.12\00:11:02.49 here are the ways you should respond." 00:11:02.52\00:11:04.13 I have to train my child in this manner 00:11:04.16\00:11:06.13 because the reality is that 00:11:06.16\00:11:07.73 even though he has a wonderful personality, 00:11:07.76\00:11:10.60 even though as far as I'm concerned, 00:11:10.63\00:11:11.97 he's a great person, 00:11:12.00\00:11:13.34 he can be judged strictly based on his complexion. 00:11:13.37\00:11:16.40 It's an unfortunate reality. 00:11:16.44\00:11:17.77 It is sinful, but nevertheless, it's real. 00:11:17.81\00:11:20.48 Well, when I think about that, I have to let my son know, 00:11:20.51\00:11:24.18 "Son, if somebody spoke to you in a rude manner, 00:11:24.21\00:11:27.15 and let's say, it's even a police officer 00:11:27.18\00:11:29.25 or what have you. 00:11:29.28\00:11:31.19 You may feel, 'who do you think you are? 00:11:31.22\00:11:34.72 Where do you get off talking to me like this? 00:11:34.76\00:11:36.69 Excuse me, I deserve respect.' 00:11:36.73\00:11:38.06 And you can go down that list." 00:11:38.09\00:11:39.89 But the reality is that we have a major trail 00:11:39.93\00:11:43.77 of what has happened to many individuals 00:11:43.80\00:11:47.27 of African-American descent 00:11:47.30\00:11:48.97 that has had responses like this, 00:11:49.00\00:11:51.17 unfortunately to police officers 00:11:51.21\00:11:52.87 and some of them have even lost their lives as a result of it. 00:11:52.91\00:11:55.38 So I told my son, 00:11:55.41\00:11:56.75 "Son, it's not that we will not fight against injustice. 00:11:56.78\00:12:00.22 We will not deal with things that are evil, 00:12:00.25\00:12:02.48 but you gotta learn how to pick and choose when to fight. 00:12:02.52\00:12:05.32 And when you're right there on the street, 00:12:05.35\00:12:06.79 that's not the best time to do it right there, 00:12:06.82\00:12:08.72 because sometimes it's just what you say 00:12:08.76\00:12:10.36 and what the cop says and if you're dead, 00:12:10.39\00:12:11.83 you have no say. 00:12:11.86\00:12:13.19 So I want you to practice wisdom 00:12:13.23\00:12:14.96 that even if you felt like you were being unjustly treated, 00:12:15.00\00:12:18.60 it's not that it won't be dealt with, 00:12:18.63\00:12:20.44 but you gotta learn something called restraint. 00:12:20.47\00:12:22.80 You gotta learn how to say, 00:12:22.84\00:12:24.17 'Listen, I know what I'm feeling right now, 00:12:24.21\00:12:25.81 but at the same time I have to understand 00:12:25.84\00:12:27.91 this is not the time for me to address this issue. 00:12:27.94\00:12:30.81 I'm gonna do it at a better time 00:12:30.85\00:12:32.18 that's more advantageous to me, 00:12:32.21\00:12:33.65 to get the goal, which is to get justice.'" 00:12:33.68\00:12:36.38 So the Bible is bringing out principle after principle 00:12:36.42\00:12:39.29 that simply lets us know. 00:12:39.32\00:12:41.29 Just because you feel it, 00:12:41.32\00:12:42.66 just because you think it, or what have you, 00:12:42.69\00:12:44.03 it doesn't mean that you should express it. 00:12:44.06\00:12:45.99 Now, the problem that I'm seeing sometimes 00:12:46.03\00:12:48.43 in hip-hop culture is that a lot of our young people 00:12:48.46\00:12:51.83 are being referred to as gods. 00:12:51.87\00:12:54.44 Yeah. 00:12:54.47\00:12:55.80 And, you know, what the Bible that says, 00:12:55.84\00:12:57.17 "No, God can do what He wants." 00:12:57.21\00:12:58.54 Because He is sovereign, but the problem is that 00:12:58.57\00:13:00.11 if I teach individuals that you are gods, 00:13:00.14\00:13:03.58 then I am basically trying to say to a degree 00:13:03.61\00:13:05.95 that you are sovereign, 00:13:05.98\00:13:07.85 and you can do what you want, 00:13:07.88\00:13:09.25 and exercise what you want, 00:13:09.28\00:13:10.62 and express what you want which the Bible does not teach. 00:13:10.65\00:13:14.19 And as a result of that, we can find ourselves again 00:13:14.22\00:13:17.09 through the influence of hip-hop culture, 00:13:17.13\00:13:19.19 coming in contrast with God and His word. 00:13:19.23\00:13:22.50 And we put ourselves on Satan's ground. 00:13:22.53\00:13:25.27 This is the unfortunate psychology 00:13:25.30\00:13:27.24 that has been purported throughout hip-hop culture 00:13:27.27\00:13:30.01 by some of its thought leaders, and I know we have a video clip 00:13:30.04\00:13:32.51 where we're gonna go ahead and kind of show an example 00:13:32.54\00:13:34.91 of one of the key thought leaders 00:13:34.94\00:13:36.95 with the gospel of hip-hop, 00:13:36.98\00:13:38.61 the temple of hip-hop and, of course, 00:13:38.65\00:13:40.58 this idea of what we're talking about an expression 00:13:40.62\00:13:43.05 which is none other than KRS-One, 00:13:43.08\00:13:45.32 and a video where he made some statements along these lines. 00:13:45.35\00:13:47.92 So I think we should take a look at this, 00:13:47.96\00:13:49.92 and then let's go ahead, and let's share some comments 00:13:49.96\00:13:51.46 on it as we come back while we're dealing 00:13:51.49\00:13:52.99 with the subject of expression. 00:13:53.03\00:13:54.46 All right. All right. 00:13:54.50\00:13:55.83 So let's take a look. 00:13:55.86\00:13:57.20 Hip-hop is the new Vatican right now. 00:13:57.23\00:14:00.87 This is why we started the temple of hip-hop. 00:14:00.90\00:14:03.64 Because there is knowledge that urban people need, 00:14:03.67\00:14:07.84 spiritual knowledge, it's still in the world. 00:14:07.88\00:14:10.98 But urban people need it. 00:14:11.01\00:14:13.18 Urban people need to know that God is not a man in the sky, 00:14:13.21\00:14:18.39 they all say that. 00:14:18.42\00:14:19.75 "Oh, we know God is not a man in the skyway." 00:14:19.79\00:14:22.26 But you don't really believe that. 00:14:22.29\00:14:24.36 You really don't believe that God is in your heart 00:14:24.39\00:14:26.39 'cause if you did, 00:14:26.43\00:14:27.76 you wouldn't be looking at the next man 00:14:27.80\00:14:29.20 the way you're looking at them. 00:14:29.23\00:14:30.67 We don't really have a robust spirituality. 00:14:30.70\00:14:34.34 And I think it really needs to come back. 00:14:34.37\00:14:36.44 You know, spirituality hasn't gone anywhere. 00:14:36.47\00:14:39.11 It hasn't gone anywhere. 00:14:39.14\00:14:40.48 People have just allowed themselves 00:14:40.51\00:14:42.94 to be labeled by corporations. 00:14:42.98\00:14:46.01 Don't let the label, label you. 00:14:46.05\00:14:49.42 And this is, this is the truth. 00:14:49.45\00:14:51.59 People say, "I'm a Christian," that's a label. 00:14:51.62\00:14:54.66 Now, you allow, "I'm a Christian." 00:14:54.69\00:14:56.49 What is that really? What is that? 00:14:56.52\00:14:58.96 What do you mean, when you say, 00:14:58.99\00:15:00.66 "I'm a Jew. I'm a Muslim." 00:15:00.70\00:15:03.06 Muslim? 00:15:03.10\00:15:04.43 What does that mean to you? 00:15:04.47\00:15:05.97 What is that? Is it just a label? 00:15:06.00\00:15:08.57 Even the clothing you put on, is that just a label? 00:15:08.60\00:15:12.21 Only hip-hop has the authority even to announce to the world 00:15:12.24\00:15:18.81 a new spiritual thought. 00:15:18.85\00:15:20.72 Only hip-hop has this authority. 00:15:20.75\00:15:23.05 And the reason being is because all of the religions 00:15:23.08\00:15:26.02 have blood on their hand. 00:15:26.05\00:15:28.02 All of them. 00:15:28.06\00:15:29.39 No disrespect to nobody, we're just talking... 00:15:29.42\00:15:31.39 So, I mean, these are some pretty powerful expressions 00:15:31.43\00:15:34.36 and what is it... 00:15:34.40\00:15:35.80 What are your thoughts on it? 00:15:35.83\00:15:37.17 What kind of feedback would you give? 00:15:37.20\00:15:38.53 I mean, there are several things 00:15:38.57\00:15:39.90 that we're not gonna spend too much time in nitpick here, 00:15:39.93\00:15:41.34 but the bottom line is this, 00:15:41.37\00:15:42.80 we see this emphasis over and over. 00:15:42.84\00:15:44.71 We can literally put video clip 00:15:44.74\00:15:46.37 after video clip after video clip 00:15:46.41\00:15:48.01 that shows this fundamental principle there, 00:15:48.04\00:15:51.28 that's kinda flowing underneath and all throughout 00:15:51.31\00:15:54.98 hip-hop culture. 00:15:55.02\00:15:56.35 The idea that God is not up in the sky, you know, 00:15:56.38\00:15:58.95 we used to, I remember in Five-Percent Nation, 00:15:58.99\00:16:00.79 that's called the spook religion, right? 00:16:00.82\00:16:02.69 The idea that God is somewhere and all, 00:16:02.72\00:16:04.86 that God is not up in the sky but He is in our hearts. 00:16:04.89\00:16:09.80 Now it's true. God desires to dwell in. 00:16:09.83\00:16:12.17 It reminds. 00:16:12.20\00:16:14.57 But the Bible also says that God is there up on His throne. 00:16:14.60\00:16:19.04 And it says that there is a process, 00:16:19.07\00:16:20.98 I can't just anoint myself to be God. 00:16:21.01\00:16:25.95 And that's the problem. 00:16:25.98\00:16:27.32 So once I consider myself to be God 00:16:27.35\00:16:30.92 and there is no God up in the sky, God is in me, 00:16:30.95\00:16:33.42 and that's the truth that all of the world needs, 00:16:33.46\00:16:35.56 and all the urban youth need. 00:16:35.59\00:16:37.19 And that's the truth that only hip-hop 00:16:37.23\00:16:39.63 and the temple of hip-hop can give us, 00:16:39.66\00:16:41.86 that's where things get very problematic. 00:16:41.90\00:16:44.03 Expression, yes, does it sound intelligent? 00:16:44.07\00:16:46.97 For a few minutes, but at a certain point, 00:16:47.00\00:16:51.07 you begin to be forced to accept one or two ideas. 00:16:51.11\00:16:57.35 Number one, is there a creator? 00:16:57.38\00:17:01.08 Are we going to follow the Biblical, 00:17:01.12\00:17:02.85 you know, prescription? 00:17:02.88\00:17:04.99 And is this reality? 00:17:05.02\00:17:06.72 Or what individuals every, 00:17:06.76\00:17:09.62 and any individual human being 00:17:09.66\00:17:11.36 or whatever culture can just say, 00:17:11.39\00:17:13.16 "This is a new reality." 00:17:13.19\00:17:15.03 And then go to the extent that saying 00:17:15.06\00:17:17.13 that hip-hop culture is the only culture, 00:17:17.17\00:17:19.83 the only entity that can inform and give instruction, 00:17:19.87\00:17:24.41 and present new spiritual thought. 00:17:24.44\00:17:27.88 Because very problematic, when we talk about expression. 00:17:27.91\00:17:30.95 And the question that I have is, 00:17:30.98\00:17:33.98 is there a principle? 00:17:34.02\00:17:36.35 Is there something in the Bible that informs me, 00:17:36.38\00:17:40.06 that gives me instruction, on number one, 00:17:40.09\00:17:42.46 "How I am to consume other people's expression?" 00:17:42.49\00:17:47.23 You know, what am I authorized to consume? 00:17:47.26\00:17:49.80 What do I need to consider when consuming 00:17:49.83\00:17:51.83 other people's expression and then the same guideline 00:17:51.87\00:17:56.20 that can be used to dictate to me how I can express? 00:17:56.24\00:18:01.21 What are the guidelines? 00:18:01.24\00:18:02.58 What are the parameters for my expression as well? 00:18:02.61\00:18:05.05 Well, there are guidelines 00:18:05.08\00:18:06.51 that I believe will definitely help us as it relates to this. 00:18:06.55\00:18:10.19 As an example, if you were to look at Philippians 4. 00:18:10.22\00:18:13.25 In Philippians 4:8, it gives a beautiful outline 00:18:13.29\00:18:18.19 of the kind of things that our mind should think on, 00:18:18.23\00:18:21.63 and then if these are the things 00:18:21.66\00:18:23.37 that are in our thoughts, 00:18:23.40\00:18:24.73 these are things God is most certainly okay 00:18:24.77\00:18:26.27 with us expressing. 00:18:26.30\00:18:27.80 And here's an example, it says in Philippians 4:8, 00:18:27.84\00:18:30.41 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, 00:18:30.44\00:18:34.54 whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, 00:18:34.58\00:18:39.05 whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, 00:18:39.08\00:18:43.22 whatsoever things are of good report, 00:18:43.25\00:18:45.52 if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, 00:18:45.55\00:18:48.76 think on these things." 00:18:48.79\00:18:51.16 Now why does God say, "Think on these things"? 00:18:51.19\00:18:53.40 Because He knows if you think about things that are true, 00:18:53.43\00:18:56.60 honest, just, pure, lovely, good report, virtuous, 00:18:56.63\00:19:02.30 this is what's gonna come out in your character. 00:19:02.34\00:19:03.87 Yes. 00:19:03.91\00:19:05.24 This is what God wants because this goes back 00:19:05.27\00:19:06.61 to the original plan, which is to clothe man 00:19:06.64\00:19:09.64 with that robe of righteousness. 00:19:09.68\00:19:11.21 These are the virtues that are directly connected 00:19:11.25\00:19:13.42 to righteousness, being truthful, and honest, 00:19:13.45\00:19:15.32 and et-cetera. 00:19:15.35\00:19:16.69 It is a lie to tell a man, 00:19:16.72\00:19:18.29 if God is not in the sky and is in your heart, 00:19:18.32\00:19:22.96 then are you saying, "You're God?" 00:19:22.99\00:19:25.09 And if you are saying you're God, are you saying, 00:19:25.13\00:19:26.80 "Are you your own creator? Did you make yourself?" 00:19:26.83\00:19:30.03 And then the next question is, 00:19:30.07\00:19:31.40 "Well, then what is the authority over you 00:19:31.43\00:19:32.77 that tells you right from wrong?" 00:19:32.80\00:19:34.24 This is the consistent problem and quite honestly, 00:19:34.27\00:19:37.11 it almost sounds borderline to atheism, in other things. 00:19:37.14\00:19:40.14 Because the atheist says, 00:19:40.18\00:19:41.51 "There is no God in the sky" either. 00:19:41.54\00:19:42.88 It's just that they don't believe 00:19:42.91\00:19:44.25 that God is in their heart, they just believe, 00:19:44.28\00:19:45.61 "Hey, I'm the god of my life. 00:19:45.65\00:19:46.98 I'm the one that says what I want, when I want, 00:19:47.02\00:19:48.35 how I want, and I do what I want." 00:19:48.38\00:19:50.09 So, you know, 00:19:50.12\00:19:51.45 there's not really a major difference 00:19:51.49\00:19:54.22 between some of these principles 00:19:54.26\00:19:55.59 that are being shared through hip-hop culture, 00:19:55.62\00:19:57.63 in comparison to some of the things at least, 00:19:57.66\00:20:00.23 that you see happening right there 00:20:00.26\00:20:01.60 in the lifestyle of the atheist. 00:20:01.63\00:20:03.37 A denial of the creator or someone that is in the sky, 00:20:03.40\00:20:07.80 if you will, that is outside of ourselves, 00:20:07.84\00:20:10.07 that did make us, and had a perfect will for us. 00:20:10.11\00:20:13.38 But more so I'm the architect of my future, 00:20:13.41\00:20:15.71 I'm the one that can express what I want, 00:20:15.74\00:20:17.45 when I want, how I want, and to do what I want. 00:20:17.48\00:20:20.32 This is where we run into problems. 00:20:20.35\00:20:22.25 Then you quoted the book called Ministry of Healing 00:20:22.28\00:20:25.75 in one of our episodes, 00:20:25.79\00:20:27.12 and there's a statement in that book 00:20:27.16\00:20:29.46 that I thought was very profound along these lines. 00:20:29.49\00:20:32.19 It's in Ministry of Healing 251 and it stated, 00:20:32.23\00:20:35.33 "It is a law of nature that our thoughts and feelings 00:20:35.36\00:20:39.53 are encouraged and strengthened as we give them utterance." 00:20:39.57\00:20:45.51 It's the more that I keep saying something, 00:20:45.54\00:20:48.04 and uttering something, as I speak, then it's gonna, 00:20:48.08\00:20:52.48 you know, become part of my thoughts, 00:20:52.51\00:20:54.78 and it's gonna be part of my thinking, 00:20:54.82\00:20:56.79 and ultimately it's gonna affect even my character. 00:20:56.82\00:20:58.99 And as a result of that, 00:20:59.02\00:21:00.52 God wants us to be mindful of what we express, 00:21:00.56\00:21:03.63 again, words, what goes on in our minds, 00:21:03.66\00:21:06.83 and, of course, what we do in our actions. 00:21:06.86\00:21:09.03 A man may walk down an area and see a woman, 00:21:09.06\00:21:11.93 I remember a hip-hop group by the name of, 00:21:11.97\00:21:13.77 Naughty by Nature, and, you know, 00:21:13.80\00:21:16.14 I had a chance to work with them, 00:21:16.17\00:21:18.34 you know, well back in the days in, 00:21:18.37\00:21:19.94 you know, '91, '92, 00:21:19.97\00:21:22.01 and I remember that talking with them, offstage, 00:21:22.04\00:21:25.41 I found that, you know, Treach and Vinny 00:21:25.45\00:21:27.12 and these guys, they were nice guys. 00:21:27.15\00:21:28.78 I mean, I actually like them. 00:21:28.82\00:21:30.22 You know, there was a lot about their characters that I like. 00:21:30.25\00:21:32.45 And I think there's a lot of really likable people 00:21:32.49\00:21:34.76 that are in hip-hop altogether. 00:21:34.79\00:21:37.13 But there was a song that made them explosive. 00:21:37.16\00:21:39.73 But the song when I, when you look back at it, 00:21:39.76\00:21:42.30 you have to be honest and say, 00:21:42.33\00:21:43.73 "Man, this is really one of the most devastating effects 00:21:43.77\00:21:47.77 that took place on society." 00:21:47.80\00:21:50.17 And this is the constant contradiction 00:21:50.21\00:21:52.04 that you see in hip-hop culture 00:21:52.07\00:21:53.58 through the license of expression. 00:21:53.61\00:21:55.14 Again, going back to Russell Simmons, 00:21:55.18\00:21:57.41 when he was talking with Don Lemon, 00:21:57.45\00:21:58.78 and, "Look, I'm not gonna tell anybody 00:21:58.81\00:22:00.82 how to express themselves. 00:22:00.85\00:22:02.18 Every poet has their right." And so on. 00:22:02.22\00:22:03.72 But they're doing it in the name of hip-hop 00:22:03.75\00:22:06.22 and it is having an adverse effect that 00:22:06.25\00:22:08.42 we have to be honest about, the song that they wrote, 00:22:08.46\00:22:11.23 so many years ago was called 00:22:11.26\00:22:12.59 "OPP", "Other People's Property". 00:22:12.63\00:22:15.06 And he was asking everybody, you're down with OPP, 00:22:15.10\00:22:17.43 other people's property? 00:22:17.47\00:22:18.80 And what did that mean? 00:22:18.83\00:22:20.17 That was talking about, if you see aman's wife, 00:22:20.20\00:22:21.54 and you want her, go get her. 00:22:21.57\00:22:23.04 You see a woman's husband, you want him, go get him. 00:22:23.07\00:22:25.67 Now what kind of message is that? 00:22:25.71\00:22:27.04 I mean, it's almost pathetic to think that a message 00:22:27.08\00:22:30.88 like that would be connected to a culture called hip-hop 00:22:30.91\00:22:34.02 that's supposed to be about love, unity, peace, 00:22:34.05\00:22:36.62 and safely having fun. 00:22:36.65\00:22:38.39 Now, again, like you stated earlier, 00:22:38.42\00:22:41.49 maybe I'm sure, in fact, 00:22:41.52\00:22:43.39 that there are thought leaders in hip-hop culture that says, 00:22:43.43\00:22:46.26 "No, we don't agree with OPP." 00:22:46.29\00:22:48.13 We think that that was a bad song. 00:22:48.16\00:22:49.66 We don't endorse it. You know. 00:22:49.70\00:22:51.10 And while I thank God for that position, 00:22:51.13\00:22:53.84 the problem is that, 00:22:53.87\00:22:55.20 that they're not really offering something better. 00:22:55.24\00:22:57.11 What's not being stated in hip-hop culture 00:22:57.14\00:22:58.77 is do not fornicate, wait until you get married, 00:22:58.81\00:23:01.38 and you're to be with only one person which is God's design, 00:23:01.41\00:23:04.05 and it's to be one man and one woman. 00:23:04.08\00:23:06.15 And, you know, 00:23:06.18\00:23:07.52 these are the things that are not forcefully coming out. 00:23:07.55\00:23:09.98 Yeah, and that's the key. 00:23:10.02\00:23:11.35 It's not like as there's nobody on the planet saying that. 00:23:11.39\00:23:13.22 We don't know every single person in hip-hop 00:23:13.25\00:23:15.39 or that represents hip-hop. 00:23:15.42\00:23:16.93 But it's not the consistent message. 00:23:16.96\00:23:19.49 It's not the consistent message coming out. 00:23:19.53\00:23:20.90 Yes, so there's a constant, constant, constant confusion 00:23:20.93\00:23:24.93 and this is why everything, 00:23:24.97\00:23:26.94 again, must be tested by scripture. 00:23:26.97\00:23:29.30 It's a hard position for one who does not live like this, 00:23:29.34\00:23:32.41 and does not do this. 00:23:32.44\00:23:33.78 But when we're looking at cultural expressions, 00:23:33.81\00:23:36.28 it's not that an individual can't express themselves. 00:23:36.31\00:23:39.45 And by the way, you can. 00:23:39.48\00:23:40.82 You can express whatever you want. 00:23:40.85\00:23:42.28 You can do whatever you want, 00:23:42.32\00:23:43.65 but the book of Ecclesiastes tells us, 00:23:43.69\00:23:45.52 "Just keep this in mind that one day you will have to face 00:23:45.55\00:23:48.09 what you've expressed in the judgment." 00:23:48.12\00:23:49.66 God just makes it clear, you know, 00:23:49.69\00:23:51.79 "Be mindful what you say, be mindful of what you do, 00:23:51.83\00:23:54.23 and understand that a day shall come." 00:23:54.26\00:23:56.10 That a judgment can come upon us. 00:23:56.13\00:23:58.30 Because it says in Matthew 12, 00:23:58.33\00:24:00.90 and we would do well to consider this 00:24:00.94\00:24:03.07 'cause, you know, expression 00:24:03.10\00:24:04.57 and all of us have to face this reality. 00:24:04.61\00:24:06.74 And even if we don't believe it or like it, 00:24:06.78\00:24:08.11 we're still gonna face it. 00:24:08.14\00:24:09.48 It's kinda like death. 00:24:09.51\00:24:10.85 You don't like it, but it's coming. 00:24:10.88\00:24:12.21 And so it is that, you know, judgment, judgment is coming, 00:24:12.25\00:24:15.58 judgment has come for many, 00:24:15.62\00:24:17.55 and judgment will come ultimately for everyone. 00:24:17.59\00:24:20.16 But the Bible says in Matthew 12, 00:24:20.19\00:24:22.22 it says in verse 35, 00:24:22.26\00:24:24.29 "A good man out of the good treasure 00:24:24.33\00:24:26.23 of the heart bringeth forth good things. 00:24:26.26\00:24:29.06 And an evil man out of the evil treasure 00:24:29.10\00:24:31.90 bringeth forth evil things. 00:24:31.93\00:24:33.64 But I say unto you, 00:24:33.67\00:24:36.00 that every idle word that men shall speak, 00:24:36.04\00:24:41.24 they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 00:24:41.28\00:24:45.01 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, 00:24:45.05\00:24:47.88 and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." 00:24:47.92\00:24:51.49 The Bible makes it clear that what we express, 00:24:51.52\00:24:55.62 there is an accountability. 00:24:55.66\00:24:57.66 And God wants us to understand that, 00:24:57.69\00:25:00.00 "Listen, you may have thoughts, 00:25:00.03\00:25:02.60 you may have words that you have put together in your mind 00:25:02.63\00:25:05.63 and get ready to speak, 00:25:05.67\00:25:07.04 and you certainly may have actions that you want to do," 00:25:07.07\00:25:09.97 but God says, 00:25:10.01\00:25:11.34 "Think, pause, you have to understand 00:25:11.37\00:25:13.81 whatever you're about to do. 00:25:13.84\00:25:15.18 It's kind of like the story with you and your friends, 00:25:15.21\00:25:17.01 you know, guys, if we're gonna do this, 00:25:17.05\00:25:19.01 just understand there's an accountability." 00:25:19.05\00:25:21.48 And that is the message that we have to give, it's to say, 00:25:21.52\00:25:23.82 "Listen, God is not in you innately, 00:25:23.85\00:25:27.39 God comes into our heart that He finds as a place 00:25:27.42\00:25:30.56 where He can dwell. 00:25:30.59\00:25:32.09 And God does not dwell in filth, 00:25:32.13\00:25:33.50 He dwells in holiness, 00:25:33.53\00:25:34.86 and God can only make us holy when we submit unto Him." 00:25:34.90\00:25:38.63 That's when He can transform us or do as David says, 00:25:38.67\00:25:41.70 "Create in me a clean heart, 00:25:41.74\00:25:43.94 renew within me a right spirit." 00:25:43.97\00:25:46.11 Then God does not have a problem 00:25:46.14\00:25:48.24 making His home in our minds, 00:25:48.28\00:25:50.21 and influencing our thoughts that we begin to speak, 00:25:50.25\00:25:53.98 do, act, dress, and everything else, 00:25:54.02\00:25:57.12 in the way that He has called us to do. 00:25:57.15\00:25:59.55 So when you look at these elements of hip-hop culture, 00:25:59.59\00:26:01.89 that's what we have to pay attention to, is that 00:26:01.92\00:26:04.19 breaking, DJing, MCing, all of these different things. 00:26:04.23\00:26:07.66 The fashion, and all these things, 00:26:07.70\00:26:10.40 they are expressions that are coming from a culture. 00:26:10.43\00:26:13.54 The question is, can we put these to the test of God's word 00:26:13.57\00:26:17.44 and can these things pass the test that 00:26:17.47\00:26:20.11 we can say it is all right to do it? 00:26:20.14\00:26:22.44 Or are we functioning by this atheistic, 00:26:22.48\00:26:25.48 demigod idea that I somehow innately am God myself 00:26:25.51\00:26:29.62 and I can make up the decisions, 00:26:29.65\00:26:31.55 and decide what I want to do, and express myself as I choose? 00:26:31.59\00:26:34.89 The Bible says something different and if we are wise, 00:26:34.92\00:26:37.56 especially for those of us who profess Christianity, 00:26:37.59\00:26:40.16 we need to follow what the word of God says. 00:26:40.20\00:26:42.96 So I think it's pretty clear that expression, 00:26:43.00\00:26:46.50 in whatever form it comes, 00:26:46.53\00:26:47.87 is kind of an indicator of what's on the heart. 00:26:47.90\00:26:50.11 That's correct. 00:26:50.14\00:26:51.47 And so if you're expressing falsehood consistently, 00:26:51.51\00:26:53.98 if you're expressing violence, if you're expressing something 00:26:54.01\00:26:57.25 that's degrading society 00:26:57.28\00:26:58.91 whether it's by great or by little, 00:26:58.95\00:27:02.35 and we know that according, again, to Hosea 4 that 00:27:02.38\00:27:05.05 "The rejection of knowledge, the rejection of the truth, 00:27:05.09\00:27:07.86 the rejection of the reality as God presents it, 00:27:07.89\00:27:10.49 it leads to destruction." 00:27:10.53\00:27:11.99 If you're doing that in any degree on the scale, 00:27:12.03\00:27:14.73 then it's showing that your heart is corrupt in some way, 00:27:14.76\00:27:17.97 shape, or form. 00:27:18.00\00:27:20.00 These things are exciting. 00:27:20.04\00:27:21.37 We're talking about cultural expression. 00:27:21.40\00:27:22.74 We're gonna continue to talk 00:27:22.77\00:27:24.11 about the various forms of expression 00:27:24.14\00:27:25.61 that are outlined in hip-hop culture. 00:27:25.64\00:27:27.54 But more importantly, 00:27:27.58\00:27:28.91 look at the principles that govern genuine, 00:27:28.94\00:27:31.71 true, pure, holy, lovely, and acceptable expression. 00:27:31.75\00:27:37.82 God is not against expression. 00:27:37.85\00:27:39.19 God is not against our culture. 00:27:39.22\00:27:41.42 But everything that God identifies as truth, 00:27:41.46\00:27:45.69 and love, and purity, 00:27:45.73\00:27:47.83 are the things that dictate to us 00:27:47.86\00:27:51.50 how we can express ourselves and what is acceptable 00:27:51.53\00:27:54.70 in the reality that God has outlined. 00:27:54.74\00:27:56.91 I wanna encourage you to join us again for our next episode. 00:27:56.94\00:28:00.41 And as you remember in Proverbs 2:6, 00:28:00.44\00:28:03.28 "It is the Lord that gives wisdom and out of His mouth 00:28:03.31\00:28:06.61 comes knowledge and understanding." 00:28:06.65\00:28:08.62 God bless you. 00:28:08.65\00:28:09.98
