Now, expression is kind of

the hallmark of hip-hop culture,

and popular culture,
many cultures, you know,

pride
themselves on their freedom
00:00:57.09\00:00:59.42
to express themselves.
00:00:59.45\00:01:01.06
And we,

and the Bible for
that matter is not against,

God is not against
cultural expression,

God values culture.

In fact, God created culture.

But we know and
we discussed that as

culture drifted away
from God via the practice,

and indulgence, and sin,
then culture, man's culture,

became degraded as well.

And so in our
efforts to minister

to those various cultures,

in effort to meet people
where they are as Christ did,

and to minister to
the needs of society,

we respect culture as well

and, in fact, we
read in I Corinthians 9,

that Paul himself,

through the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit,

in an effort to more
effectively reach people,

he became a Roman to the Romans,

he became a Jew to the Jews,
00:01:46.20\00:01:48.07
so that he might win
individuals to Christ.

And so what that is saying

is that we are to
make every effort possible

within the realm of truth
to meet people where they are,

to minister to their
needs, to win their confidence,

to have, show sympathy
for them in measurable acts,

direct them to a better way,

people need time for growth,

and that this process of coming
to the Lord as a relationship,

blind obedience,

or an idea where

in robotic compulsory

religious practice,

it is the desire
for God to love man

and for man to love God

and that is a
reciprocal relationship.

So all these things
taken into consideration,

what is expected.

But we also
discussed the limitation.

So the limitation to this
idea of respecting of culture

and meeting
people where they are

is that, whenever I engage
in an effort to reach people,

to compromise the truth.

So we use several examples,

and we're gonna
continue to go down this line

because although God
desires me to respect culture,

wherever that culture
deviates from the truth,

that is what God is
not going to assert,

and that's what
we as human beings

cannot accept it either.

So this idea of
cultural expression,

God is not against expression.

God is not against culture.

God is not against the fact

that there's
different languages,

and different, you know, foods,
and different things like that.

But, however, at the
same time, God does say,

"This is appropriate
language, this is not."

God does say,

"This is food that

I made for human
beings to eat, this is not."

So there are,
there are limitations.

And so expression is great,

but what kind of
expression is the question.

So God never ever
wanted us to express everything

that comes to our
mind, isn't that correct?

That's correct.

And there's a reason why,
because you're gonna find that,

if we study the Bible carefully,

God first and foremost,
wanted us to guard our minds.

In the book of I
Peter 1 as an example,

the Bible
actually told us something

really important about the mind

and there's a lot that
the Bible says about the mind.

I did a study on it one time

and I was
amazed at what I found.

And the Bible says in
the book of I Peter 1,
00:04:15.78\00:04:19.25
and it's right there
in verse 13, that it says,

"Wherefore gird up
00:04:22.92\00:04:25.23
the loins of
your mind, be sober,
00:04:25.26\00:04:28.43
and hope to the
end for the grace
00:04:28.46\00:04:30.07
that is to be brought unto you
00:04:30.10\00:04:31.53
at the
revelation of Jesus Christ."

The Bible encourages us to
be in a sober state of mind,

a mind that is not
inebriated, if you will.

A mind that is
clear and able to focus.

Now there was a reason for that.

The reason is
that something happens

whenever we allow
things to come into our minds.

And it says this in
the book of Proverbs,

the 23 chapter, "Why
is God so concerned?"

And, I mean, really, you
can go from verse to verse,

the Bible talks
about in Romans 12:1-2

where it talks about the
transforming of the mind,
00:05:02.50\00:05:05.57
"Be not conformed to the world
00:05:05.60\00:05:07.67
but be transformed by
the renewing of your mind."
00:05:07.70\00:05:10.51
Et-cetera.

So God is really,
really focused on the mind

and the reason is very simple,
two points that I'm gonna show.

The first one is in Proverbs 23.

In Proverbs 23,
right there in verse 7,
00:05:19.25\00:05:23.55
here's what the Bible says,
00:05:23.59\00:05:24.92
and this is one reason
00:05:24.95\00:05:26.59
why God definitely
wants us to be careful
00:05:26.62\00:05:28.49
what we even let in our minds,
00:05:28.52\00:05:30.09
let alone
express from our minds.
00:05:30.13\00:05:32.33
The Bible says in Proverbs 23:7,
00:05:32.36\00:05:35.03
"For as he
thinketh in his heart,
00:05:35.06\00:05:38.47
so is he."
00:05:38.50\00:05:40.60
Now we don't use this
organ in the center of our chest
00:05:40.64\00:05:43.77
that beats and
pumps our blood to think,
00:05:43.81\00:05:45.64
but we do use this organ
in our head called the brain.
00:05:45.67\00:05:48.18
And when the Bible was
talking about, you know,
00:05:48.21\00:05:51.48
guarding the
heart or whatsoever,
00:05:51.51\00:05:53.28
"A man thinketh in his heart..."
00:05:53.31\00:05:54.98
He's actually referring
to the mind and not to the,
00:05:55.02\00:05:57.09
you know, organ in
the center of our chest.
00:05:57.12\00:05:59.05
So God was saying,

"Whatsoever goes on in your mind
00:06:00.46\00:06:02.29
is going to come
out in your character."

It is for this
reason that we are to guard

what we allow in our minds.

And then we are to guard

what we are to
express from our minds.

And how do we know that?

Well, let's consider this

text was really powerful.

It's Proverbs 13.

In Proverbs 13, this
is what the Bible says.

And this is why we
cannot think that just

because something
goes on in the mind,

means that we are in
full-blown liberty to share it.

And I'm gonna balance
this out in just a minute,

but watch this.

In Proverbs 13,
it says in verse 3,

and this is actually

a quote from the Good News
Translation which I thought,

brought the thought
out more forcefully.

It says,

"Be careful what you
say and protect your life.
00:06:43.60\00:06:47.84
A careless talker
destroys himself."

So when an
individual can become careless,

when they can get to
the point where they say,

"I don't care, I must
just say what's on my mind."

I mean, I grew up in
a household, you know,

we, you know, and
being a black man,
00:07:00.15\00:07:01.58
this is often, this
is often been labeled,
00:07:01.62\00:07:03.65
you know, the
"black attitude", you know,
00:07:03.69\00:07:05.15
and especially
towards our sisters,
00:07:05.19\00:07:06.52
the "black women", you know,
00:07:06.55\00:07:07.89
they just speak their
minds, I say what I wanna say,
00:07:07.92\00:07:09.59
nobody is the boss
of me and, you know,
00:07:09.62\00:07:11.33
all of these different terms
00:07:11.36\00:07:12.76
and people just
believe I can just,
00:07:12.79\00:07:14.90
just because I'm thinking it,
means go ahead and express it.

Or feel it. Or feel it.

And then go ahead
and just experiment it.

But the Bible teaches something

that the natural
heart does not like,

it's called restraint.

It's a word that,
you know, it's a shame

because even when you
look at hip-hop culture,

you know, a lot of
what hip-hop culture,

the way it was birth
was through oppression,

it was through subjection,
and through powers that be,
00:07:40.16\00:07:43.83
that were trying
to hold brothers down.

You know, they
can't hold me down,
00:07:46.09\00:07:47.43
you know, there's lots of songs
00:07:47.46\00:07:48.80
that used to come
out in that nature,

you can't hold me
down, I'm gonna get up,
00:07:50.20\00:07:51.53
I'm gonna rise above, and
I'mma do what I got to do.

But here it is that God himself,

He endorses not
like how man applies it,
00:07:56.00\00:07:58.51
but God nevertheless,

He does endorse
the idea of restraint.

God believes just
because you feel something

does not mean you should do it.

Just because
you're thinking something,

does not mean you
should express it.

to look at what the Bible says,

times the deception is that,

how I want,
because I am who I am

thought of a video clip

that I think we should play

that's gonna
actually bring some points out

in just a second.

In II Corinthians 10,
the Bible says, in verse 3,

"For though we
walk in the flesh,

we do not war after the flesh,

for the weapons of our
warfare are not carnal,
00:08:45.69\00:08:48.39
but mighty through God

to the pulling
down of strong holds..."

Now watch this,

"Casting down imaginations,

thing that exalts itself

against the knowledge of God,

So notice that God
actually believes in restraint,

not with just what you say,

Not every thought
that comes in your head

should be entertained.

things need to be brought

Christ and we need to ask God,

because this has nothing

or for the
betterment of my future."

So it is when it comes
to the words that we speak

Another one in
Ecclesiastes 5:2, it says,

and let not thine heart be hasty

to utter anything before God,

for God is in
heaven and thou upon earth,

herefore let thy words be few."

God teaches this
principle of restraint,

just because you're thinking it,

just because you're feeling it,

have to express it.

We have thoughts,
words, and feelings

sometimes be restrained,

would not produce good fruit.

of these things happen today.

individual that gets tired

of things happening in our world

and it's okay to be
tired of oppression,

as an example, I'm gonna speak
to present issues right now.

You know, what, I'm a
father of four children,

two boys, two girls.

My oldest son is 16 and
then my other son is 14.

They are young black
men, and we live in America,

and we have to pay
attention to things

that are happening
in our society today.

Right now, there's
a challenge going on

when it comes to young
black men and sometimes,

police officers and
things of this nature.

So I had to begin to
instruct my son, to say

"Son, listen, you know,

if a police officer comes to you
00:10:57.59\00:10:59.65
and they ask you to do something

or tell you to do something,

here are the ways
you should respond."

I have to train my
child in this manner

because the reality is that

even though he has a
wonderful personality,

far as I'm concerned,

he's a great person,

he can be judged strictly
based on his complexion.

But the reality is
that we have a major trail

of what has
happened to many individuals

of African-American descent

that has had
responses like this,

unfortunately to police officers

and some of them have even lost
their lives as a result of it.

So I told my son,

"Son, it's not that we will
not fight against injustice.

We will not deal
with things that are evil,

but you gotta learn how to
pick and choose when to fight.

And when you're
right there on the street,

that's not the best
time to do it right there,

because sometimes
it's just what you say

and what the cop

So I want you to practice wisdom

Now, the problem
that I'm seeing sometimes

in hip-hop culture is
that a lot of our young people

are being referred to as gods.

Yeah.

And, you know, what
the Bible that says,

"No, God can do what He wants."

Because He is sovereign,
but the problem is that

if I teach
individuals that you are gods,
00:13:00.14\00:13:03.58
then I am basically
trying to say to a degree
00:13:03.61\00:13:05.95
that you are sovereign,

and you can do what you want,

and exercise what you want,

and express what you want
which the Bible does not teach.

And as a result of that,
we can find ourselves again

influence of hip-hop culture,

coming in contrast
with God and His word.

unfortunate psychology

that has been purported
throughout hip-hop culture

by some of its thought leaders,
and I know we have a video clip

and kind of show an example

of one of the
key thought leaders

with the gospel of hip-hop,

the temple of
hip-hop and, of course,

this idea of what we're
talking about an expression

which is none
other than KRS-One,

and a video where he made some
statements along these lines.

should take a look at this,
