applause, when I got the praise,

People adoring me and putting me

exalting myself in this way.

comparing myself to others,

started getting caught
up in a lot of battles,

that are very
much connected to today

what is known
as hip-hop culture.

And as a result of that,

I was very much caught
up into self-exaltation.

It was only through a
knowledge of Jesus Christ

which eventually,
He got my attention,

unfortunately it was
through the death of my nephew.

But you know,
nevertheless as my nephew died,

I started thinking a
little bit more about life

and that was the
opportunity for God to reach me

and that was nothing

but a fulfillment
of scripture anyhow.

You know, the
Bible tells us that,

"It's better to go
to the house of mourning

rather than to the
house of feasting for

that is the end of all
men and the living will lay it

to his heart," Ecclesiastes 7:2.

So it was from that
death experience of my nephew

that it became an
awakening experience for me

to say, "Wow.

I do have a lot of
power and influence,

I'm making money,
I'm on television,

I'm traveling,

I'm doing a lot in
the industry of hip-hop

but at the same
time I can't stop death.

Death has an appointment
with every human being.

And when it comes, there's
going to be accountability

after the death which
we know as the judgment.

So because of that,
this is something that,

you know, made
me start thinking,

"I got to get my life right.

There has to be more than
what I'm just doing right now."

And that was, kind of
the awakening experience

"Well, I really need the Lord."

I just didn't see it
at the time but of course,

out of the darkness,

and this is how

become a new creature in Christ.

And there are a lot of people,

And there's a lot
of different concepts,

going on in people's minds,

reasons why these programs exist

way and some people say,

hip-hop, right there."

But we know that
it's broader than that.

exactly what is hip-hop.

hip-hop is a culture.

about hip-hop was rap music.

And they thought rap
was some kind of fad,

you know, like disco.

Not a lot of people listening
to disco music right now.

It's not used to sell
in market things right now,

like it was when it
was, you know, popular.

And so when rap music
came along, which is, you know,

how people identified
it instead of as a culture,

they considered it
as just another fad.

And they thought it
would just come and go away.

We know that it
never went away, in fact,

it has grown and
grown and mushroomed now

really no area of society

that you're going
to not see hip-hop

discussed in some way,

selling of a product.

the United States talking about

who's his favorite
rappers, you know, social media,

all those kind of stuff,
it's out there right now.

It's pretty much the
most popular form of music

on the planet

and has been for
many, many years.

In fact, I remember a time
that I actually saw a video clip

and I have never seen
anything like this in my life.

It was during the time
of the Late John Paul II

and when he was alive that

there were actually break-dances

that was dancing

10, 15 feet away from him.

And I'm thinking to myself,
"Who would have ever known

that the thing I used to do,

when I used to cut a box open

and pour some
talcum powder on it

and just start
spinning on my head and my back,

who would have ever
thought that this way of dancing

would find its
way in front of popes,

you know, in the world."

And Pope John Paul
II was blessing them

and, you know, all these things.

I mean, this just
shows hip-hop is not a fad,

it's not something that's
just kind of like this thing

that's here today gone tomorrow.

It has penetrated every
area and every phase of life.

we talked about it

and we keep calling
it a culture and it is.

elusively define culture,

hip-hop as a bonofide culture.

it's a counter culture

lived but it's also things

that thought leaders

about the most popular people

is obviously Afrika Bambaataa.

hip-hop culture developing.

He was a former gang
leader in New York City

developed this thing called

'the Zulu nation',

'the almighty Zulu nation'
which was a kind of a movement

to try to curb some
of the gang violence

that was taking
place in the Bronx,

in the New York at that time.

And so he would create parties
to bring all of the, you know,

this gangs and all the people

from different
neighborhoods together

and they would
use a form of music

and all these new techniques
and elements for the...

that were coming
from that same community

and it morphed into,

that show another individual

and an authority
in hip-hop culture

by the name of KRS-One
and most of us, you know,

but nevertheless he comes out

and kind of gives the
introduction to the honoree

there in the '70s in New York.

this street knowledge,

that has been added
in the fashion as well.

hip-hop, these pillars,

time talking about the history

where this stuff came from.

when we looked at Genesis 3

and the deceptions of the Satan

used through the serpent
in trying to convince Eve,

successfully convincing Eve,

that by going against
God, she could better herself.

improve, she could advance

in her intellect, in
her cultural development

would be raised
by going against God.

So we know it's ancient.

environment that kind of bred,

will, that bred hip-hop culture.

the Bronx, New York,

birthplace of hip-hop,

the South Bronx in particular.

of the South Bronx

really in the 1960s,

there was a large
construction project,

'The Cross Bronx Expressway'.

When they built that expressway,

they bulled those and
removed entire communities.

I mean, entire communities
were literally wiped off the map

to make way for this expressway.

So there was a
lot of displacement

and the removal of a
lot of those middleclass

kids in a poor neighborhood.

transcended all of these things.
