known to be unclean

but now God cleaned them up.

It's okay to eat
today, and it's all right

and you know, and we
have this kind of verses

that can appear on the surface.

It can appear as if
it's a contradiction.

It can appear as if
something has been phased out,

where something new has come in.

But this is why the Bible never,

you know the Word of

to read the scriptures.

God gives us to do that

correlates to the experiences

our day-to-day lives

where God may have
referred to a food item

as unclean in times past,

but then later on
at some point in time

God suddenly cleaned it up?"

And Acts 10 is one of those
pivotal chapters in the Bible

that individual
say, "Yes, see here,

it's right here, God,

the things that
were once unclean,
00:03:18.79\00:03:20.13
now they're clean."

this passage of scripture

of help us understand

the Book of Acts 10?

highlight what's happening.

So this is post crucifixion,
the apostles have received,

and the followers of Christ
have received the Holy Spirit,

3,000 were
baptized, 5,000 were baptized.

The message is
going out to the world,

both to Jew and non-Jew.

All right, now,
what had been entrenched

in the minds of the Israelites,
not through the Bible

but through corrupt leadership
and it's still through
00:04:34.64\00:04:38.17
the various
alternative writings,

the Talmud, the Mishnah,
00:04:40.11\00:04:42.08
where they had kind of enacted
these rigorous fanatical,
00:04:42.11\00:04:47.38
if you will laws and
kind of made that elevated
00:04:47.42\00:04:51.15
that above the
Bible to a certain extent.
00:04:51.19\00:04:53.76
That's where the Rabbis
were trained through the Talmud,
00:04:53.79\00:04:56.49
and that became the law.
00:04:56.52\00:04:57.86
The Pharisees and you
can consider the scribes

and the Pharisees.
00:05:00.20\00:05:01.53
They were of that group.
00:05:01.56\00:05:03.93
And it was clearly
taught from a little child

that although in the
Bible, God says that His people

were to be the
lights to the gentiles.

They were to be His witnesses.

He called, He raised
them up for His glory
00:05:14.31\00:05:17.35
and He designed them
to give them the truth,

only so that they could live
it and give it to the world.

That's right.

He chose to partner with
humanity with this people

that he called from nowhere,

this obscure tribe of
wandering individuals.

And He chose them and
wanted to elevate them

above every nation on the earth,

not for their own
prestige and pride,

but so they could carry
the gospel to the world.

The message of
salvation to the world,

even in Old
Testament times, right?

They had taken this now

and twisted it to
protect the truth.

And keep it from defilement
and keep it from infection

from other tribes.

So they began to
literally categorize

non-Jews as unclean.

And so they would
be in the same category

as the pig, or as
the camel, or as the dog,

that not only if I ate it,

it would make me
unclean, it would defile me,

but if I even touched it

or even sat
down and ate with it,

or I went into its house
any, shook hands with it,

any interaction whatsoever,
even walked the same path,

it got to that extent.

They were treated like
dogs and like unclean animals.

And they even
referred to them as such.

So they had gotten
into this, this mindset

and institutionalized rebellion
if you will and corruption,

and Peter is affected by this.

And some of the rest of
the apostles are affected

by this idea that, well,
00:06:47.97\00:06:50.47
if a non-Jew
wants to follow Christ,

don't they have to
become circumcised?
00:06:54.28\00:06:56.31
Don't they have
to follow the laws,
00:06:56.34\00:06:58.55
and all the laws like
they had understood it,
00:06:58.58\00:07:00.72
as taught from the Pharisees?
00:07:00.75\00:07:02.08
Don't they have to
follow all these things
00:07:02.12\00:07:03.45
in order to be
part of our fellowship?
00:07:03.49\00:07:05.79
And it got to the
point where Peter,
00:07:05.82\00:07:08.22
he as a
faithful Jew of the time,
00:07:08.26\00:07:10.99
he would not share
space with the Roman.
00:07:11.03\00:07:13.43
Romans were the apex of apostate
00:07:13.46\00:07:16.46
and wickedness,
apostasy, and wickedness,
00:07:16.50\00:07:20.07
and evil in regards to humanity,
00:07:20.10\00:07:22.27
because they were
the imperial force
00:07:22.30\00:07:23.81
that was occupying Israel.
00:07:23.84\00:07:25.74
They believed that they
were the persecuting power
00:07:25.77\00:07:28.04
or the prophesied
and that the Messiah
00:07:28.08\00:07:29.78
was going to come out
and wipe out the Romans.

So at the same time as
Peter is kind of harboring
00:07:32.41\00:07:36.65
and perpetuating
this misconception
00:07:36.69\00:07:39.55
in his own life,
00:07:39.59\00:07:40.92
you have an
individual Cornelius,
00:07:40.96\00:07:43.16
and Cornelius
is a Roman officer,
00:07:43.19\00:07:45.29
a centurion, a highly ranking
Roman officer in the military.
00:07:45.33\00:07:49.70
And he actually has a
relationship with God.
00:07:49.73\00:07:52.43
He has accepted the
teachings of the Bible
00:07:52.47\00:07:54.70
through the Israelites.
00:07:54.74\00:07:56.34
And he's taught his
household to do the same.
00:07:56.37\00:07:59.27
And he's there praying,
he is going to his worship
00:07:59.31\00:08:01.34
however that was.
00:08:01.38\00:08:02.74
An angel, God
sends a messenger to him.
00:08:02.78\00:08:05.85
And tells him, "You need to go
00:08:05.88\00:08:08.32
and send for a man named Peter."
00:08:08.35\00:08:10.25
And by the way,
this man named Peter
00:08:10.29\00:08:11.69
is in this particular city.

He's in this particular house.
00:08:13.12\00:08:14.46
He's on this street,
gives him the address
00:08:14.49\00:08:16.39
and to go find him.
00:08:16.42\00:08:17.76
This is whose
house he's staying at

and this is the
street it's on in the city.

So he immediately
sends his servants

to go bring this man
Peter because God has said,

you need to bring Peter here
to deliver a certain message.

He has a message
for you in your home.

So at this time as the
messengers are on route

to find Peter and bring
him back to Cornelius's home.

Peter is
meditating and having worship,

if you will, and God
sends a vision to Peter.

And this vision is a
curtain or sheet comes and falls
00:08:46.22\00:08:51.39
and comes,
descends out of heaven
00:08:51.43\00:08:53.19
and on the sheet
are unclean animals.
00:08:53.23\00:08:55.36
You know the
snakes, and the rodents,
00:08:55.40\00:08:57.27
and the bugs
and creeping things,
00:08:57.30\00:08:58.87
all manner of unclean animals
00:08:58.90\00:09:01.84
like is
described in Leviticus 11.
00:09:01.87\00:09:04.01
So all the unclean animals
are coming down in this sheet
00:09:04.04\00:09:07.08
and a voice from heaven,
00:09:07.11\00:09:08.44
as Peter is
looking at these things
00:09:08.48\00:09:09.81
and probably disgusted, right?
00:09:09.84\00:09:11.45
And afraid that
he's going to be defiled.

A voice comes
from heaven and says

"Arise, Peter, kill and eat."

And Peter immediately says

"Not so, I'm not
going to do that,

I've never even
eaten any of these things,

not even touched them."

And then the
voice from heaven says

"What God has cleansed
that call not thou common."

Don't call that common.

He says, "I've never eaten
anything common or unclean."

And he said it three
times, the Bible says.

And then he says

that at the tail
end of this exchange,

the voice from heaven says,

"Listen, there's going to be men

coming to knock at the door,
they're downstairs right now."

And they've come and
they're going to ask you

to go with them.

I want you to go
down and go with them,

nothing doubting.

Don't doubt it,
for I've sent them.

So Peter now is
just seeing this vision

and literally, you
know the knocks at the door.

And he has to go down

and he has to go with these men.

potentially these non-Jewish men

to a Romans officer's house.

He gets to the
house and as he shares

this exchange
now with Cornelius.

He eventually tells him
the story of the gospel.

Cornelius and his whole
entire household are baptized

and filled with the Holy Spirit.

The same way that
the Jewish apostles

and the Jewish
followers of Christ,

the 120 in that upper room,

filled with the Holy Ghost.

Now this Roman, this gentile
is filled with the Holy Ghost

in all of his house.

And Peter summarizes this
vision and the experience,

and the lesson that
God was teaching him

through the vision
with the unclean animals.

And he
summarizes it in verse 28.

So I want to read
from Acts 10:28 to show

what the Bible says,
what Peter says of himself

was the meaning of the vision.

So Acts 10:28, it says,
"And he said unto them..."

Peter is speaking now
00:11:10.27\00:11:11.60
to the gentiles
of Cornelius' home.

"And he said unto to them,
he know how that it is unlaw
00:11:15.14\00:11:19.17
and unlawful thing for a man
that is a Jew to keep company,
00:11:19.21\00:11:23.45
or to come unto
one of another nation.
00:11:23.48\00:11:27.62
But God hath showed
me that I should not call
00:11:27.65\00:11:31.45
any man common or unclean."

I mean, it's mind-boggling.

When I first read this
for the very first time,

my mind was astounded.

Oh, yeah.

So the vision of
all the unclean animals

literally didn't
represent unclean animals
00:11:43.50\00:11:46.17
and creepy things.
00:11:46.20\00:11:47.54
It literally
represented non-Jews.

And Peter understood
this. He got the lesson.

And he said, God has
showed me in that vision

that I am not to call, you know,
00:11:57.51\00:11:59.15
it's, number one it's unlawful.
00:11:59.18\00:12:00.88
You know that is unlawful
for a Jew to enter into a house
00:12:00.92\00:12:04.09
or to share
space with a non-Jew,
00:12:04.12\00:12:06.49
but God has showed me
that I should not call
00:12:06.52\00:12:08.82
any man common or unclean.
00:12:08.86\00:12:12.93
This is what Acts
10 is talking about.

It's not talking about,
it's now God has cleansed

unclean animals, he
was talking about Peter,

you need to let
go of this bigotry.

You need to let
go of your racism.

And you need to carry
this message to the gentiles.

this vision to let you know

that I have
blessed the gentiles.

I have cleansed the gentiles
and it's now time for them

to receive the
light of the gospel.

Well, you know, I see
two lessons coming out of it.

Number one, I see
the clarification on

what we were going
to call the argument.

The argument is,
well, you're showing me

from the Bible that there's
all these unclean animals

that God says we're
not supposed to eat.
00:12:52.63\00:12:54.64
So the first one is, well,
00:12:54.67\00:12:56.34
this pertains
only to Jewish people.
00:12:56.37\00:12:57.91
Yeah.
00:12:57.94\00:12:59.27
Well, then we go ahead and
say, "Well, how could that be?"

When we look at Genesis 7
and we see it very clearly,

that before there
was ever a Jewish person

who walked on this
earth, there animals were
00:13:04.75\00:13:06.85
still designated
as clean and unclean.

Right.

So therefore, it is
not a Jewish teaching.

It was a teaching for humanity

that there are
animals that are clean,

animals that are unclean.

Why did they go into the ark?

Because there were
no garbage can systems

or anything like that

and God knew that once
this whole flood situation

was going to be
over, eventually,

when mankind begins to populate
or repopulate the earth,

there's going to be waste.

There's going to be, you know,

the natural
things that make up life.

And therefore, they were
the scavengers of the land,

the scavengers of the sea,

the scavengers that
fly through the air.

And these were the instruments.
These were the garbage cans.

And therefore,
it was a necessity

for these
animals to be preserved

and that's why God had
them to go into the ark,

not for them to be eaten.

Well, here it is,
now we fast forward

all the way down to
the time of Acts 10.

And we see, yes,
Peter did have a vision

and yes, God did definitely use

unclean animals to
represent something.
00:13:56.40\00:13:59.70
And he says, "Go ahead and eat."
