00:00:26.69\00:00:31.93 Welcome back to another segment of Take it to the bank. 00:00:31.96\00:00:35.10 We are so happy you're here with us 00:00:35.13\00:00:36.90 and we have some wonderful things to talk about. 00:00:36.93\00:00:39.47 Well, technically, they are not wonderful 00:00:39.50\00:00:41.74 because they have to do with your privacy 00:00:41.77\00:00:43.57 and your safety and your security. 00:00:43.61\00:00:45.31 There are so many things that are going on out there 00:00:45.34\00:00:47.58 when you take a look at the technology that we have. 00:00:47.61\00:00:50.48 Some of you may have a smart phone, 00:00:50.51\00:00:52.61 some of you may have a tablet. 00:00:52.65\00:00:55.05 There are many different pieces of technology that are there 00:00:55.08\00:00:58.39 and they provide us different benefits. 00:00:58.42\00:01:00.66 But what is really going on behind the scenes. 00:01:00.69\00:01:04.19 We've talked about how information is used 00:01:04.23\00:01:06.93 and how information is taken from you. 00:01:06.96\00:01:10.93 As a consumer, we need to be aware of what that's all about. 00:01:10.97\00:01:14.70 When I talk about consumer, 00:01:14.74\00:01:16.07 let's make it as simple as possible, 00:01:16.10\00:01:17.54 you and I are individuals that are in a market place. 00:01:17.57\00:01:21.11 In that market place, you and I have an opportunity 00:01:21.14\00:01:23.78 to go at to different locations and purchase things. 00:01:23.81\00:01:27.62 We consume those things. 00:01:27.65\00:01:29.18 So I go to grocery store 00:01:29.22\00:01:30.75 and I buy groceries to put on the table at night, 00:01:30.79\00:01:33.49 I've consumed that. 00:01:33.52\00:01:34.92 I've become the consumer of those products 00:01:34.96\00:01:37.16 at that specific retail outlet. 00:01:37.19\00:01:39.39 So that's key to understand. 00:01:39.43\00:01:40.76 You as a consumer have been conditioned to be a consumer. 00:01:40.80\00:01:45.07 Did you know that since 1984, 00:01:45.10\00:01:48.50 the regulation of advertising has offered 00:01:48.54\00:01:50.84 an opportunity for media giants, 00:01:50.87\00:01:53.71 advertising agents to come after you as a target? 00:01:53.74\00:01:57.98 Did you know that there are different demographics? 00:01:58.01\00:02:00.62 You make up a demographic that's quite interesting. 00:02:00.65\00:02:03.75 I make up a demographic based on my age, my age range, 00:02:03.79\00:02:07.46 I make up a demographic based on my ethnicity, 00:02:07.49\00:02:09.82 I make up a demographic based on how much I make, 00:02:09.86\00:02:12.36 I make up a demographic in how I use credit, 00:02:12.39\00:02:15.86 how I use different sources of technology. 00:02:15.90\00:02:19.53 And that technology that's out there 00:02:19.57\00:02:22.74 is something that is used to get information. 00:02:22.77\00:02:27.58 Corporations are not just there to give you a benefit. 00:02:27.61\00:02:31.31 Corporations are there to develop resources of revenue 00:02:31.35\00:02:36.35 and also data, data on how you consume things, 00:02:36.38\00:02:40.72 how you buy things, what you do with things. 00:02:40.76\00:02:43.96 And so we begin the process of trying to understand 00:02:43.99\00:02:47.86 how do we fit into this whole new era of technology 00:02:47.90\00:02:53.23 and how we utilize 00:02:53.27\00:02:54.80 the technology that we have available to us. 00:02:54.84\00:02:57.24 We had the opportunity to ask 00:02:57.27\00:02:59.17 a couple of young people this question 00:02:59.21\00:03:01.94 about how you identify a scam or a fraud. 00:03:01.98\00:03:06.11 Here is what they say. 00:03:06.15\00:03:09.22 I identify a scam or a fraud when one, 00:03:09.25\00:03:11.75 they ask you personal information 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.66 without providing their name 00:03:13.69\00:03:16.96 or what company they are calling from 00:03:16.99\00:03:19.69 or even sometimes, you know, they'll call you during work 00:03:19.73\00:03:22.30 and you'll ask them, 00:03:22.33\00:03:23.67 "Oh, you know, I don't have time right now, 00:03:23.70\00:03:25.03 can I have your number and I'll call you back." 00:03:25.07\00:03:27.10 And they refuse that or saying this is the one time thing, 00:03:27.14\00:03:30.44 then that kind of check, 00:03:30.47\00:03:32.97 a little check marks should come up. 00:03:33.01\00:03:36.31 That one could be a little tricky sometimes 00:03:36.34\00:03:38.21 because a lot of companies and a lot of people nowadays 00:03:38.25\00:03:40.88 they try to look as much as legitimate 00:03:40.92\00:03:42.68 as they can as possible. 00:03:42.72\00:03:44.42 But good thing to try to get what it says, 00:03:44.45\00:03:47.66 If somebody is offering you a service, 00:03:47.69\00:03:49.02 you want to know, like what's the company, 00:03:49.06\00:03:50.63 how many years it has been in business, 00:03:50.66\00:03:52.76 I mean, and then you want to see 00:03:52.79\00:03:54.16 if they are part of the better business bureau 00:03:54.20\00:03:56.56 to make sure that they actually are reliable company. 00:03:56.60\00:03:59.13 If it's a place where you're buying appliances 00:03:59.17\00:04:02.30 or you're buying just stuff for your house, 00:04:02.34\00:04:04.47 you got to make sure like if you're not gonna get, 00:04:04.51\00:04:08.21 be victim of fraud in this in a sense of, 00:04:08.24\00:04:11.01 they offer you a credit card with certain interest 00:04:11.05\00:04:13.21 and you didn't read the fine print 00:04:13.25\00:04:14.58 and then it's not really fraud 00:04:14.62\00:04:16.45 but it could be considered fraud to you. 00:04:16.48\00:04:18.72 Also, be careful when you use, 00:04:18.75\00:04:21.09 I mean, your pin card some times. 00:04:21.12\00:04:23.09 'Cause when you, you put your pin number 00:04:23.12\00:04:25.09 for your bank card when you're buying something, 00:04:25.13\00:04:27.60 you gonna make sure you're at the good establishment 00:04:27.63\00:04:29.73 because if you are like in a place where, you know, 00:04:29.76\00:04:31.93 there's not many cameras, or there's not much security, 00:04:31.97\00:04:34.30 then you can get information taking away from you. 00:04:34.34\00:04:37.77 It's interesting when you look at scams and frauds. 00:04:41.64\00:04:44.78 There are demographics that are targeted. 00:04:44.81\00:04:47.02 I'll give you an example. 00:04:47.05\00:04:48.75 One of the targets they go after 00:04:48.78\00:04:50.15 are specific to income brackets. 00:04:50.19\00:04:52.09 So 35 to 40,000 dollar a year wage earners 00:04:52.12\00:04:55.69 are typically targeted. 00:04:55.72\00:04:57.39 Those that are of ethnic minorities 00:04:57.43\00:05:00.13 such as African-Americans and Hispanics are targeted. 00:05:00.16\00:05:03.67 And of course, there are those that are 65 plus are elderly 00:05:03.70\00:05:07.07 that are targeted and these are big issues. 00:05:07.10\00:05:10.41 We have no idea the level that is actually, 00:05:10.44\00:05:14.91 scams that are actually going on out there. 00:05:14.94\00:05:16.75 I know of a family that told me of their elderly parent 00:05:16.78\00:05:19.81 that was being scammed by someone. 00:05:19.85\00:05:21.72 They were asking them to go to Western Union 00:05:21.75\00:05:24.95 and make a payment to help out 00:05:24.99\00:05:27.99 a friend that was in another country 00:05:28.02\00:05:30.06 or in this case, 00:05:30.09\00:05:31.63 they were asking him to pay for a lottery that he had won. 00:05:31.66\00:05:36.77 Always a warning sign. 00:05:36.80\00:05:38.13 If you don't remember entering a lottery, 00:05:38.17\00:05:40.87 there is something that you have to, 00:05:40.90\00:05:42.34 that's the first thing you should question. 00:05:42.37\00:05:44.14 I don't remember entering any type of lottery. 00:05:44.17\00:05:46.78 But they don't think that way. 00:05:46.81\00:05:48.14 It's whoa, I've won a lot of money. 00:05:48.18\00:05:50.68 Let me pay the fees. 00:05:50.71\00:05:52.35 One thing you need to know 00:05:52.38\00:05:53.72 is, when you're working with the banks, 00:05:53.75\00:05:56.48 and you're working with these type of funds 00:05:56.52\00:05:58.95 that can come into your, into your care, 00:05:58.99\00:06:01.82 you don't have to pay a fee to get to your funds. 00:06:01.86\00:06:06.80 There are other scams such as hey, you have won a lottery 00:06:06.83\00:06:11.00 and the check is in the mail 00:06:11.03\00:06:12.37 so they send you a check and you have to go to the bank 00:06:12.40\00:06:15.20 and you cash the check 00:06:15.24\00:06:17.17 but then, they ask you to write a check 00:06:17.21\00:06:20.31 or an amount back to them 00:06:20.34\00:06:22.44 to cover the fees of sending it. 00:06:22.48\00:06:24.58 Now what is the problem there? 00:06:24.61\00:06:26.72 Let me advise you of how the bank system actually works. 00:06:26.75\00:06:30.82 When you go to a bank teller, you provide them that check. 00:06:30.85\00:06:35.36 It's a document, 00:06:35.39\00:06:37.33 a document that carries cash along with it. 00:06:37.36\00:06:40.50 Meaning that there has to be some funds 00:06:40.53\00:06:43.43 at the bank that it's been given from. 00:06:43.47\00:06:47.14 In many situations, 00:06:47.17\00:06:48.84 these frauds mean that these tellers 00:06:48.87\00:06:51.97 at the banks should be able to pick up 00:06:52.01\00:06:54.51 if a check is not accurate. 00:06:54.54\00:06:58.35 But these new checks that are coming out, 00:06:58.38\00:07:01.08 look so much like the real thing 00:07:01.12\00:07:02.92 that in many situations, they get beyond the teller. 00:07:02.95\00:07:06.12 And that's when we get into the danger situation 00:07:06.15\00:07:07.99 because you now have cash to check. 00:07:08.02\00:07:10.06 The bank in and out of itself 00:07:10.09\00:07:11.93 is mandated by law to give you a portion 00:07:11.96\00:07:14.06 of that check back. 00:07:14.10\00:07:15.43 They don't necessarily clear the full check 00:07:15.46\00:07:17.77 but you have access to certain amount of funds. 00:07:17.80\00:07:20.84 What we have now is an interesting situation 00:07:20.87\00:07:22.57 because you have deposited a check, 00:07:22.60\00:07:25.04 possibly a fraudulent check. 00:07:25.07\00:07:26.57 They've given you access to some of those funds, 00:07:26.61\00:07:28.94 the bank has not caught the situation or scenario 00:07:28.98\00:07:32.21 and then you go now and start spending the money 00:07:32.25\00:07:35.35 that you had in the bank. 00:07:35.38\00:07:36.95 And as a matter of fact, 00:07:36.99\00:07:38.32 you actually start writing those checks 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.76 that they've asked you to send over to them 00:07:40.79\00:07:43.22 or what in some cases they do, 00:07:43.26\00:07:45.06 they'd ask you to actually take the cash 00:07:45.09\00:07:47.20 out of your bank account 00:07:47.23\00:07:48.63 and go to a Western Union and send the money. 00:07:48.66\00:07:51.17 Now there's many warning signs that are going on right now, 00:07:51.20\00:07:53.70 should be going off in your mind. 00:07:53.74\00:07:55.20 Western Union, when you send some thing to somebody 00:07:55.24\00:07:57.61 that you've never met, that's very, very dangerous. 00:07:57.64\00:08:01.38 Number two, Western Union, when the money is gone, 00:08:01.41\00:08:04.71 it's gone and once the individuals pick it up, 00:08:04.75\00:08:08.82 there is no way you can get access to it back. 00:08:08.85\00:08:10.95 So the care that you need to take in substantiating 00:08:10.99\00:08:13.69 that that check is good, 00:08:13.72\00:08:17.49 is something that is difficult to do 00:08:17.53\00:08:20.90 if you don't know the person sending you the check. 00:08:20.93\00:08:22.76 So, if you receive the check in the mail, 00:08:22.80\00:08:24.40 and you don't look, know the person 00:08:24.43\00:08:25.77 that sent you the check, 00:08:25.80\00:08:27.24 that should also be some type of warning sign 00:08:27.27\00:08:30.01 and you should take some due diligence 00:08:30.04\00:08:31.77 in checking on that. 00:08:31.81\00:08:33.14 Your, that check that you have deposited 00:08:33.17\00:08:35.54 goes through bank 00:08:35.58\00:08:36.91 and that bank then sends it off 00:08:36.95\00:08:38.28 to a regional clearing house for the bank. 00:08:38.31\00:08:41.38 That regional clearing house works on the check. 00:08:41.42\00:08:43.55 It takes, that puts the funds into your bank account 00:08:43.59\00:08:46.25 and they take that check and wire it to the other bank, 00:08:46.29\00:08:50.76 the sender's bank's clearing house. 00:08:50.79\00:08:53.80 If that clearing house doesn't exist, 00:08:53.83\00:08:55.63 then the bank goes elsewhere and it eventually ends up 00:08:55.66\00:08:59.43 back in the hands of another bank teller, 00:08:59.47\00:09:02.94 local teller that basically says this check is a fraud 00:09:02.97\00:09:06.61 and then they go back to your account 00:09:06.64\00:09:09.04 and pull that funds from your account. 00:09:09.08\00:09:12.05 And then of course, because it's a fraudulent check 00:09:12.08\00:09:14.72 and the fact that you've probably used the money 00:09:14.75\00:09:17.75 that has been deposited to your account. 00:09:17.79\00:09:20.32 Now you are in arrears 00:09:20.36\00:09:21.69 for the full amount of the check, 00:09:21.72\00:09:23.06 plus whatever you sent over 00:09:23.09\00:09:24.89 to that individual asking for the funds. 00:09:24.93\00:09:27.00 These are typical type of scams that happen 00:09:27.03\00:09:29.76 on an ongoing basis. 00:09:29.80\00:09:31.13 And did you know the time frame that it takes for that check 00:09:31.17\00:09:36.14 to go through the initial system 00:09:36.17\00:09:37.77 and through the clearing house 00:09:37.81\00:09:39.14 is about two to two and half weeks. 00:09:39.17\00:09:41.68 If you know the system 00:09:41.71\00:09:44.25 and you don't know the sender of the check, 00:09:44.28\00:09:47.32 you have to think twice 00:09:47.35\00:09:48.78 about the fraud that could happen to your specific account. 00:09:48.82\00:09:53.52 You are held to a higher level of understanding 00:09:53.56\00:09:55.89 because many people aren't aware 00:09:55.92\00:09:57.99 of how these things can impact their credit, 00:09:58.03\00:10:00.60 can impact their ability to open up 00:10:00.63\00:10:02.80 of the checking account 00:10:02.83\00:10:04.17 and all it takes is just one specific situation 00:10:04.20\00:10:07.90 that you aren't quite aware of 00:10:07.94\00:10:10.11 and fraud happens all the time. 00:10:10.14\00:10:14.48 The individual that have been sending this money out 00:10:14.51\00:10:17.28 because he was told that he was getting about a 250,000 plus 00:10:17.31\00:10:22.32 lottery win. 00:10:22.35\00:10:23.69 He had sent out in the tune of almost 10 to 15,000 dollars 00:10:23.72\00:10:27.29 before his family members, caught the situation and asked 00:10:27.32\00:10:30.79 and held the grandfather accountable 00:10:30.83\00:10:32.59 and said, "Hey, what are you doing? 00:10:32.63\00:10:34.93 Why are you sending this money, who are you sending it to? 00:10:34.96\00:10:38.07 One of the things we do in our lectures 00:10:38.10\00:10:40.60 that we provide 00:10:40.64\00:10:41.97 to many different organizations is this. 00:10:42.00\00:10:43.84 We talk about financial literacy 00:10:43.87\00:10:46.64 as the critical think on money. 00:10:46.68\00:10:50.08 Every element of your life, the time that you wake up 00:10:50.11\00:10:52.41 to the time that you go to sleep 00:10:52.45\00:10:53.78 is time that is allotted to you 00:10:53.82\00:10:55.75 either making money or wasting time. 00:10:55.78\00:10:58.35 Time is money. 00:10:58.39\00:11:00.39 And the care that you take in understanding 00:11:00.42\00:11:03.96 how you use your time is critical. 00:11:03.99\00:11:06.16 It is critical that you understand 00:11:06.19\00:11:07.93 the different schemes that are out there, 00:11:07.96\00:11:10.13 the fact that you are a targeted demographic 00:11:10.17\00:11:12.50 and knowing when something is too good to be true, 00:11:12.53\00:11:16.10 it typically is too good to be true. 00:11:16.14\00:11:19.87 And those are the kind of things 00:11:19.91\00:11:21.48 we need to begin thinking about as we talk about these things 00:11:21.51\00:11:25.51 called scams and fraud. 00:11:25.55\00:11:27.52 There's a gentleman that I'd like to introduce to. 00:11:27.55\00:11:29.18 His name is Mr. Joshua Hernandez. 00:11:29.22\00:11:31.22 We have become good friends as he is a financial planner 00:11:31.25\00:11:34.72 in the Orange County area of California. 00:11:34.76\00:11:37.73 We had a chance to talk about this specific issue. 00:11:37.76\00:11:40.16 He's not necessarily an expert on that area 00:11:40.20\00:11:43.06 but it was good to have a conversation with him 00:11:43.10\00:11:45.37 as he explained, as we had a talk, 00:11:45.40\00:11:47.67 and he explained some of the things 00:11:47.70\00:11:49.20 that you should be aware of 00:11:49.24\00:11:50.81 as we look at the issue of scams. 00:11:50.84\00:11:54.34 Here is some of what we talked about 00:11:54.38\00:11:57.45 in this initial segment of our meeting. 00:11:57.48\00:12:00.52 Scams. 00:12:02.02\00:12:03.35 They are relevant, they are part of our lives, 00:12:03.39\00:12:05.39 they are things that impact our lives every single day. 00:12:05.42\00:12:08.52 And we're talking about the critical think. 00:12:08.56\00:12:09.99 How do you answer the question when someone comes to you 00:12:10.03\00:12:12.69 and say, I have this great offer. 00:12:12.73\00:12:15.06 And you know what, Joshua, I think what's interesting 00:12:15.10\00:12:17.53 is several of the clients that I meet with 00:12:17.57\00:12:20.17 and talk about this critical think on money 00:12:20.20\00:12:22.30 have to come to me with example letters 00:12:22.34\00:12:24.01 that they have received in their email 00:12:24.04\00:12:25.74 about hey, I am a person from Nigeria 00:12:25.77\00:12:28.64 and I have 14.5 million dollars 00:12:28.68\00:12:30.71 that I need to put into a specific bank account 00:12:30.75\00:12:33.92 and I'll be happy to give you 13 million of that 00:12:33.95\00:12:37.25 to take care of this transaction for me. 00:12:37.29\00:12:39.85 Now, you know, I'm not here to tell you 00:12:39.89\00:12:42.86 what's right or wrong, a scam, gifting, 00:12:42.89\00:12:45.43 this and that and the other. 00:12:45.46\00:12:46.86 I think it's probably more appropriate first to give us-- 00:12:46.90\00:12:49.86 give them some signs to look for 00:12:49.90\00:12:52.53 and things that they should be aware of 00:12:52.57\00:12:54.57 because everyone wants access to people's money, correct? 00:12:54.60\00:12:58.37 Yes, they do. 00:12:58.41\00:12:59.74 And have you seen some of these things go on? 00:12:59.77\00:13:03.55 Have you had access to those to some of your clients or? 00:13:03.58\00:13:07.78 Yeah, you know, over the years, you know, I've had clients 00:13:07.82\00:13:10.82 that, you know, talk about their investments, 00:13:10.85\00:13:12.35 how they had to take some money out of their investment 00:13:12.39\00:13:16.39 to their saving's programs to fix problems 00:13:16.42\00:13:18.63 that have happened because of fraud and scams 00:13:18.66\00:13:20.46 and things like that. 00:13:20.50\00:13:22.13 Boy, if I were to have donated 00:13:22.16\00:13:24.87 or help someone in another country 00:13:24.90\00:13:26.94 because they needed my help that I didn't know, 00:13:26.97\00:13:30.34 I'll be a millionaire if all those things were true. 00:13:30.37\00:13:33.01 Chances are, if I helped everyone, 00:13:33.04\00:13:35.24 I'd have no money in my bank account 00:13:35.28\00:13:36.61 because they are all scams, usually they are all scams. 00:13:36.64\00:13:39.38 True. 00:13:39.41\00:13:40.75 It's very interesting as you look at imp of scams. 00:13:44.72\00:13:47.76 They are a dime a dozen. 00:13:47.79\00:13:49.22 They are everywhere and they know who you are, 00:13:49.26\00:13:52.83 they know that you are a target 00:13:52.86\00:13:54.56 because there's a lot of information 00:13:54.60\00:13:57.00 about you that's out there. 00:13:57.03\00:13:58.53 Let's talk a little bit about some of these scams 00:13:58.57\00:14:01.70 that are out there. 00:14:01.74\00:14:03.07 These scams come from credible resources 00:14:03.10\00:14:06.68 but you know there's problems with it 00:14:06.71\00:14:08.88 when you, they are asking you to send money 00:14:08.91\00:14:11.11 through the Western Union, 00:14:11.15\00:14:12.48 when they are asking for account information, 00:14:12.51\00:14:14.65 when they are asking you to send money 00:14:14.68\00:14:16.69 to an individual that you don't know. 00:14:16.72\00:14:18.45 I had talked to someone at, I believe it was MoneyGram 00:14:18.49\00:14:21.12 and asked them about the same situation. 00:14:21.16\00:14:22.96 I said, what is it that you have in your profile 00:14:22.99\00:14:25.69 to help people to protect themselves 00:14:25.73\00:14:27.23 against these type of scams 00:14:27.26\00:14:28.60 and they say, a couple of things. 00:14:28.63\00:14:30.47 Don't send to somebody you don't know. 00:14:30.50\00:14:34.90 If you don't know the individual, 00:14:34.94\00:14:36.40 you've never met the individual, 00:14:36.44\00:14:37.77 there is no credibility behind the individual, 00:14:37.81\00:14:39.67 this individual doesn't know your bank, 00:14:39.71\00:14:41.58 that doesn't know who you are 00:14:41.61\00:14:43.04 and they come to you saying, you won a lottery. 00:14:43.08\00:14:45.61 First question you ask, 00:14:45.65\00:14:46.98 which is what we tell people well, 00:14:47.02\00:14:49.05 in this critical think on money is, 00:14:49.08\00:14:51.45 ask that one critical question. 00:14:51.49\00:14:56.12 Ask the question of when did I enter a lottery, 00:14:56.16\00:14:59.66 what lottery did I enter, 00:14:59.69\00:15:01.16 when was it that I entered the lottery. 00:15:01.20\00:15:02.96 You ask those three question in rapid succession 00:15:03.00\00:15:05.70 and they can't answer it, you'll know something is up 00:15:05.73\00:15:08.67 and they are asking for something 00:15:08.70\00:15:10.51 that they are just in interested 00:15:10.54\00:15:14.48 in getting information on you 00:15:14.51\00:15:16.34 and then getting access to your funds. 00:15:16.38\00:15:18.38 Remember, the information is out there. 00:15:18.41\00:15:20.58 The moment you go into a store and you sign a warranty card, 00:15:20.62\00:15:23.95 it's information that goes into a database, 00:15:23.99\00:15:25.92 depending on what you put on that warranty card 00:15:25.95\00:15:29.26 is information that gets into a system 00:15:29.29\00:15:32.13 that's sold to other parties. 00:15:32.16\00:15:34.16 It's a money making scheme that gives other organization 00:15:34.20\00:15:38.97 access to details about you and your life. 00:15:39.00\00:15:41.77 It can get actually dangerous. 00:15:41.80\00:15:43.54 One young lady was told, actually got her warranty card 00:15:43.57\00:15:47.94 and she entered all the possible information 00:15:47.98\00:15:50.68 on that card. 00:15:50.71\00:15:52.85 It was asking information about, is she married, 00:15:52.88\00:15:55.08 is she single, she have children, 00:15:55.12\00:15:57.15 what are her hobbies, what she like to do, 00:15:57.19\00:15:59.35 where does she go on vacation. 00:15:59.39\00:16:01.12 Not just the typical, here's my name, 00:16:01.16\00:16:03.32 here's my phone number and here's my address 00:16:03.36\00:16:07.40 but other details about her life 00:16:07.43\00:16:09.33 that she wasn't aware of and she got 00:16:09.36\00:16:11.17 a very interesting letter from an individual 00:16:11.20\00:16:15.37 who's incarcerated at the one of the area prisons. 00:16:15.40\00:16:19.14 Very detailed letter 00:16:19.17\00:16:21.18 because he seemed to have information on her 00:16:21.21\00:16:26.55 that was only made available 00:16:26.58\00:16:29.05 through what she'd indicated on her warranty card. 00:16:29.08\00:16:33.15 She didn't realize that the prison system 00:16:33.19\00:16:36.22 was using some of the prisoners 00:16:36.26\00:16:38.73 to go through the warranty cards 00:16:38.76\00:16:42.10 on that specific individual 00:16:42.13\00:16:44.53 and she now had revealed 00:16:44.57\00:16:47.90 so much of her personal life with an individual 00:16:47.94\00:16:51.31 that really didn't need that information 00:16:51.34\00:16:53.14 and she had to go through a lot of work 00:16:53.17\00:16:55.38 to unravel some of the information 00:16:55.41\00:16:57.05 that was out there to find out 00:16:57.08\00:16:58.41 who it was and how she could protect herself 00:16:58.45\00:17:00.82 because now, hey, that individual 00:17:00.85\00:17:03.05 not only has her private information, 00:17:03.08\00:17:05.49 knows her thinking patterns 00:17:05.52\00:17:08.26 and where she goes and what she does 00:17:08.29\00:17:09.76 but also has her address and her phone number 00:17:09.79\00:17:12.69 and her email information. 00:17:12.73\00:17:15.83 And then that information 00:17:15.86\00:17:17.33 gets into a whole other system 00:17:17.37\00:17:19.83 that provides people that detail 00:17:19.87\00:17:23.37 that they need to say, 00:17:23.41\00:17:24.94 this is a good target for whatever scam that I have. 00:17:24.97\00:17:28.38 And they do it in the most innovative ways. 00:17:28.41\00:17:31.25 Have you received email in your inbox from someone 00:17:31.28\00:17:34.95 in a foreign country that's asking, 00:17:34.98\00:17:36.95 telling you that they have 15 million dollars 00:17:36.99\00:17:41.09 and they would be willing to give you 00:17:41.12\00:17:43.36 a large portion of it if you would pay 00:17:43.39\00:17:46.06 for the transfer into your account? 00:17:46.09\00:17:48.13 Watch that, watch that very carefully. 00:17:48.16\00:17:50.93 Any type of person that contacts you 00:17:50.97\00:17:54.84 and asks you to send money 00:17:54.87\00:17:57.37 to gain access to funds, 00:17:57.41\00:17:58.97 is something you should watch very carefully. 00:17:59.01\00:18:01.54 And there are some other tools and mechanisms 00:18:01.58\00:18:03.85 that you should learn about 00:18:03.88\00:18:06.41 that will help prevent this type of behavior 00:18:06.45\00:18:08.72 in the near future. 00:18:08.75\00:18:10.09 But before we move any further, 00:18:10.12\00:18:11.45 I'd like to go back to Mr. Joshua Hernandez 00:18:11.49\00:18:14.66 and the conversation continues 00:18:14.69\00:18:16.49 as we talk about how we are able to recognize 00:18:16.52\00:18:19.86 fraudulent behavior such as fraudulent checks 00:18:19.89\00:18:22.46 and here is our conversation. 00:18:22.50\00:18:26.30 One of the things that people should be aware of 00:18:26.33\00:18:28.14 is how your bank system works, 00:18:28.17\00:18:30.44 what happens with the check that comes in, 00:18:30.47\00:18:32.54 you should go and talk to your bank 00:18:32.57\00:18:33.98 and find out how this thing works 00:18:34.01\00:18:36.21 because you know, when you cash a check, 00:18:36.24\00:18:40.02 they as you know, the laws associated with banks, 00:18:40.05\00:18:43.35 they have to give you 00:18:43.39\00:18:44.72 at least a portion of that check 00:18:44.75\00:18:46.09 that you've deposited to your account. 00:18:46.12\00:18:47.46 So now it's incumbent upon the bank 00:18:47.49\00:18:48.82 to be aware of any fraudulent checks 00:18:48.86\00:18:50.69 that are out there. 00:18:50.73\00:18:52.06 And many of the tellers may not be able to catch 00:18:52.09\00:18:53.90 some of this really good works of fraud with checks. 00:18:53.93\00:18:57.13 And one of the items that we are dealing with, 00:18:57.17\00:18:59.53 I've talked to one client who said, 00:18:59.57\00:19:01.94 I received a check. 00:19:01.97\00:19:04.27 I won a lottery, well, my first question was, 00:19:04.31\00:19:06.88 "Did you enter a lottery?" 00:19:06.91\00:19:08.24 "I can't remember entering that lottery." 00:19:08.28\00:19:10.35 And I took the check to the bank 00:19:10.38\00:19:12.11 and they cashed the check. 00:19:12.15\00:19:14.48 Now what would be your advise from a perspective 00:19:14.52\00:19:18.92 on how you'll advise somebody from a standpoint of 00:19:18.95\00:19:22.02 if something is too good to be true, 00:19:22.06\00:19:23.93 is it typically too good to be true? 00:19:23.96\00:19:25.76 You took the words right out of my mouth, Cordell. 00:19:25.79\00:19:28.06 If it's too good to be true, usually it is 00:19:28.10\00:19:31.20 and then once that crossed your mind, 00:19:31.23\00:19:33.00 then you research. 00:19:33.03\00:19:34.37 Who is this person? Where is it coming from? 00:19:34.40\00:19:37.14 You know, how is it, 00:19:37.17\00:19:39.24 are there programs out there like that. 00:19:39.27\00:19:40.94 You know, do some research on, is that true, is that real. 00:19:40.98\00:19:44.41 So who knows, maybe there is a possibility 00:19:44.45\00:19:46.92 of some thing like that could be out there. 00:19:46.95\00:19:48.58 You know there is grant money. 00:19:48.62\00:19:49.95 Grant money is available, somewhat free money 00:19:49.98\00:19:52.52 as long as you ask for it. 00:19:52.55\00:19:54.32 If you fit a certain category and you meet the criteria, 00:19:54.36\00:19:57.23 and so that's kind of how I think about 00:19:57.26\00:19:58.73 those things but you want to be very careful. 00:19:58.76\00:20:00.83 I do know, you know, personally I've been affected by, 00:20:00.86\00:20:04.97 you know, maybe that it tend to be 00:20:05.00\00:20:07.10 affected by, you know, scam artists. 00:20:07.14\00:20:08.84 You know, my one day my account was blocked. 00:20:08.87\00:20:12.41 I couldn't use my debit card anymore. 00:20:12.44\00:20:14.78 And I called my bank. I said, well, what happened. 00:20:14.81\00:20:16.54 They said, you have no money in your account. 00:20:16.58\00:20:18.41 And I said, well, what do you mean? 00:20:18.45\00:20:20.18 It says, yeah, well, you have money 00:20:20.22\00:20:23.08 but it's frozen. 00:20:23.12\00:20:24.55 And as I was in here in Los Angeles County 00:20:24.59\00:20:27.29 and the day before, just the night before, 00:20:27.32\00:20:31.56 you know, there was a big purchase 00:20:31.59\00:20:33.06 of $500 in Palm Springs using that same account. 00:20:33.09\00:20:36.53 So one of the things that I do see happening 00:20:36.56\00:20:39.20 that's really good is a lot of banks 00:20:39.23\00:20:40.57 are noticing these things 00:20:40.60\00:20:41.94 and they see your trends of purchases, 00:20:41.97\00:20:43.87 where, how much, the average dollar amounts 00:20:43.91\00:20:46.68 and if they see anything off, 00:20:46.71\00:20:48.11 they are actually having indicators 00:20:48.14\00:20:49.74 that are you know, 00:20:49.78\00:20:51.11 kind of as a red flag that tell them to stop. 00:20:51.15\00:20:53.31 So they froze my account. 00:20:53.35\00:20:54.75 That was not me in Palm Springs having a good time. 00:20:54.78\00:20:56.75 I wish it was me and make some fun purchases out there. 00:20:56.79\00:20:59.45 But it wasn't. 00:20:59.49\00:21:00.82 So you know, they replaced my card, 00:21:00.86\00:21:02.26 they refunded my money and it was pretty seamless. 00:21:02.29\00:21:05.89 It worked out pretty good for me. 00:21:05.93\00:21:07.86 Just the other night, there was another purchase 00:21:07.90\00:21:09.60 and there was a text message on my phone. 00:21:09.63\00:21:12.87 "Did you make this purchase?" 00:21:12.90\00:21:14.70 And I had in fact, made this purchase. 00:21:14.74\00:21:17.47 So they are doing things which I like is helping us. 00:21:17.51\00:21:19.87 It's really interesting out there and it's really 00:21:24.38\00:21:26.51 a hazardous world we can get into 00:21:26.55\00:21:27.92 if you are just not prepared in what to do. 00:21:27.95\00:21:31.29 And you heard some of the comments that were made. 00:21:31.32\00:21:34.29 Technology is actually enhancing 00:21:34.32\00:21:36.42 some of our ability to protect ourselves 00:21:36.46\00:21:38.56 but technology is also, and opening up 00:21:38.59\00:21:41.03 so many new venues for individuals 00:21:41.06\00:21:43.03 to get to our data. 00:21:43.06\00:21:46.67 So, as we talk about what we can do to prevent 00:21:46.70\00:21:50.21 some of this behavior on our relative information 00:21:50.24\00:21:54.94 that we have is we need to start 00:21:54.98\00:21:56.85 taking more proactive approaches. 00:21:56.88\00:21:58.35 One of the things that fraudsters will do 00:21:58.38\00:22:00.28 is they look through mailboxes. 00:22:00.32\00:22:03.79 What I advise people to do is you get a lot of these 00:22:03.82\00:22:06.35 pre-approvals on credit cards coming into your inbox. 00:22:06.39\00:22:09.32 If you go to opt out prescreen.org I believe it is, 00:22:09.36\00:22:13.70 you will have an opportunity to say, 00:22:13.73\00:22:15.73 hey, I don't want any more of these, 00:22:15.76\00:22:18.73 these offers coming to my inbox or my mailbox. 00:22:18.77\00:22:21.60 A lot of what people are doing now 00:22:21.64\00:22:22.97 is they are trying to get mailboxes 00:22:23.00\00:22:24.91 that actually lock in our sub development 00:22:24.94\00:22:28.58 that we live, we have mailboxes that have locks on them 00:22:28.61\00:22:31.75 that hopefully prevent people from trying to get in there 00:22:31.78\00:22:34.12 and take those things out. 00:22:34.15\00:22:35.48 So, we are having to stay, try to stay ahead of those 00:22:35.52\00:22:38.49 that are trying to do whatever they can 00:22:38.52\00:22:40.99 to take our information. 00:22:41.02\00:22:43.12 The obvious is true. Get serious. Don't get scared. 00:22:43.16\00:22:45.79 Try to figure out what you're gonna do 00:22:45.83\00:22:47.16 and I just recently heard, hey, if you're going on a trip, 00:22:47.20\00:22:50.10 tell your credit card agency that you are going on a trip. 00:22:50.13\00:22:52.87 It would be a good idea 00:22:52.90\00:22:54.24 because now they see a purchase out in Tahiti 00:22:54.27\00:22:57.91 somewhere, they know that 00:22:57.94\00:22:59.27 oh, yeah, he did tell us he's gonna be there. 00:22:59.31\00:23:01.58 But one of the nice things is, it's always a trigger. 00:23:01.61\00:23:04.41 If they see things on my behalf 00:23:04.45\00:23:06.41 that isn't supposed to happen, they give me a call. 00:23:06.45\00:23:09.12 Hey, did you do this, did you buy this 00:23:09.15\00:23:11.65 because we saw this purchase 00:23:11.69\00:23:13.09 and you are not typically in this area. 00:23:13.12\00:23:15.46 It does right back to the idea that our credit card companies 00:23:15.49\00:23:20.23 are watching our behavior patterns. 00:23:20.26\00:23:22.86 Technology is a great thing but it's giving 00:23:22.90\00:23:25.77 a lot of our information and our behavior patterns 00:23:25.80\00:23:27.90 up to those card companies. 00:23:27.94\00:23:30.11 Because did you know that as they track that behavior, 00:23:30.14\00:23:32.51 they know okay, Mr. Thomas takes, 00:23:32.54\00:23:34.48 drive to work, he drives about 15.5 minutes. 00:23:34.51\00:23:37.78 So we know the range and patterns of his movements. 00:23:37.81\00:23:40.82 He will typically but this best buy. 00:23:40.85\00:23:43.15 He will typically buy his groceries 00:23:43.18\00:23:45.29 at this specific organization. 00:23:45.32\00:23:48.26 He will typically do a specific, 00:23:48.29\00:23:50.63 he has a specific pattern of how he does things 00:23:50.66\00:23:53.29 and if he has changed that pattern, it drives a trigger. 00:23:53.33\00:23:57.00 You know that many of the new jobs 00:23:57.03\00:23:58.70 that are out there, the new wave of technology jobs 00:23:58.73\00:24:02.54 or those that can be great programmers 00:24:02.57\00:24:04.84 that can provide real information 00:24:04.87\00:24:07.18 to organizations about the patterns 00:24:07.21\00:24:09.54 that we have in our lives and it will trigger 00:24:09.58\00:24:12.25 some type of notice to that organization 00:24:12.28\00:24:14.98 and you can actually download alerts 00:24:15.02\00:24:18.29 to your smart phone that can give you an idea 00:24:18.32\00:24:20.42 of something that just happened. 00:24:20.46\00:24:21.92 In fact, as simple as information of you 00:24:21.96\00:24:25.09 that goes out to the internet 00:24:25.13\00:24:26.59 on specific internet organization 00:24:26.63\00:24:30.77 that based companies, 00:24:30.80\00:24:33.20 it can, if your name goes out in that venue, 00:24:33.23\00:24:37.11 it will trigger an alert to you saying 00:24:37.14\00:24:38.91 hey, your information has been sent out via the internet, 00:24:38.94\00:24:44.61 via the world wide web 00:24:44.65\00:24:45.98 and it can make you aware 00:24:46.01\00:24:47.42 of information that's out there. 00:24:47.45\00:24:49.12 There are websites that can help you 00:24:49.15\00:24:51.35 watch your credibility, your character online 00:24:51.39\00:24:55.62 and help remove some of that information 00:24:55.66\00:24:57.56 and there are other steps that you can take 00:24:57.59\00:24:59.56 relative to what is out there 00:24:59.59\00:25:02.56 to contain some of that information. 00:25:02.60\00:25:05.63 But the one thing I will say is this, on the internet, 00:25:05.67\00:25:09.64 on any type of social network, 00:25:09.67\00:25:12.87 when information goes out, it is gone. 00:25:12.91\00:25:16.38 There is no way to bring it back. 00:25:16.41\00:25:18.88 And there needs to be great care 00:25:18.91\00:25:20.38 in taking care of that information that you have. 00:25:20.42\00:25:24.62 One of the other things that you should do 00:25:24.65\00:25:27.72 is lock down your information. 00:25:27.76\00:25:29.46 Lock it down. 00:25:29.49\00:25:30.83 If you have a smart phone, put a password 00:25:30.86\00:25:34.20 so that if someone finds it somewhere or you lose it, 00:25:34.23\00:25:37.17 it's harder for them to get into 00:25:37.20\00:25:39.60 your, your smart phone device. 00:25:39.63\00:25:43.94 Number two, listen, if you have a lot of information 00:25:43.97\00:25:47.68 on your smart phone, you know what happens 00:25:47.71\00:25:50.51 when you back up your smart phone 00:25:50.55\00:25:52.01 or you sync it, it goes 00:25:52.05\00:25:53.72 to some kind of storage device in the sky. 00:25:53.75\00:25:56.32 I'm very serious. 00:25:56.35\00:25:57.89 Because of such a space capacity 00:25:57.92\00:26:00.16 of the information that's been held 00:26:00.19\00:26:01.82 on all of us are in the globe, 00:26:01.86\00:26:03.99 we need other mechanisms for containing this information. 00:26:04.03\00:26:08.10 So, we have storage devices which have, 00:26:08.13\00:26:10.87 it's in a virtual space and not in a tangible space 00:26:10.90\00:26:15.37 where they save your pictures 00:26:15.40\00:26:17.94 and your files and your documents, 00:26:17.97\00:26:21.14 encrypted spaces that you, they tell you 00:26:21.18\00:26:25.08 that nobody can get access to it. 00:26:25.11\00:26:27.35 But how many times do you hear of organizations 00:26:27.38\00:26:31.49 that have been hacked into 00:26:31.52\00:26:33.15 and a lot of information has been gained access to. 00:26:33.19\00:26:37.29 We have had that same thing happen in our life 00:26:37.33\00:26:40.56 where we found that the health insurance agency 00:26:40.60\00:26:43.80 that held our son's health information 00:26:43.83\00:26:46.90 was hacked into and we got a letter, 00:26:46.94\00:26:50.07 several weeks almost a couple of months later, 00:26:50.11\00:26:52.61 that oh, by the way, this happened, don't worry. 00:26:52.64\00:26:55.54 We're giving you this offers so you can freeze the account 00:26:55.58\00:26:58.18 if anything happens on your son's behalf, 00:26:58.21\00:27:01.48 which is a other big area of concern 00:27:01.52\00:27:04.82 because many of these fraudsters 00:27:04.85\00:27:06.79 are looking for information 00:27:06.82\00:27:08.49 on children social security information 00:27:08.52\00:27:10.93 and many people are now becoming aware 00:27:10.96\00:27:13.70 of the children having bad credit 00:27:13.73\00:27:18.10 before they are even old enough to have credit 00:27:18.13\00:27:20.84 because many of these databases are stolen, 00:27:20.87\00:27:24.91 hacked into and sold around the globe 00:27:24.94\00:27:27.84 to market that's willing to purchase them 00:27:27.88\00:27:30.35 and use them to acquire other goods. 00:27:30.38\00:27:33.95 This is a big, big issue as we take a look at fraud, 00:27:33.98\00:27:37.79 as we take a look at identity theft 00:27:37.82\00:27:39.69 and we'll look at the technology 00:27:39.72\00:27:42.09 that's available to us in how we use that information. 00:27:42.12\00:27:47.40 It's critical that we take a step back 00:27:47.43\00:27:50.33 and start to think about 00:27:50.37\00:27:51.70 what is it that's important to me, 00:27:51.73\00:27:54.00 what type of information do I need, 00:27:54.04\00:27:56.77 how do I utilize the technology that I have 00:27:56.81\00:27:59.77 and most importantly of all, 00:27:59.81\00:28:02.34 is how do I respond to those offers 00:28:02.38\00:28:04.75 that are coming into my mailbox, 00:28:04.78\00:28:07.28 physical mailbox or virtual mailbox 00:28:07.32\00:28:09.45 because all of the information, 00:28:09.48\00:28:11.55 you have to ask that critical question, 00:28:11.59\00:28:13.99 this critical think on money is very, very important 00:28:14.02\00:28:17.09 for each one of us 00:28:17.13\00:28:18.46 because you as a demographic are a part of a specific group 00:28:18.49\00:28:22.33 and that group is being targeted by individuals 00:28:22.36\00:28:25.73 who have nothing better to do 00:28:25.77\00:28:27.24 than to take your money. 00:28:27.27\00:28:28.67 It is your money. 00:28:28.70\00:28:30.04 You worked hard for it. 00:28:30.07\00:28:31.41 Utilize it in a strategic ways that are necessary 00:28:31.44\00:28:34.14 so that you can develop a program 00:28:34.18\00:28:36.95 for saving your money, 00:28:36.98\00:28:38.31 to develop a program for investing your money, 00:28:38.35\00:28:40.95 to develop a program that will enhance your happiness 00:28:40.98\00:28:45.09 by being able to give and support 00:28:45.12\00:28:48.29 non profit or as ministry such as 3ABN 00:28:48.32\00:28:51.69 in supporting the gift of the gospel. 00:28:51.73\00:28:55.20 That is what I have for you today. 00:28:55.23\00:28:57.07 Please take care and Take it to the Bank. 00:28:57.10\00:29:00.44
