He put a little safety pin there. 00:02:22.50\00:02:25.11 And I asked him to take care of the dry cleaning 00:02:25.14\00:02:28.14 in a specific way. 00:02:28.18\00:02:29.51 Not a problem at all. 00:02:29.54\00:02:30.88 As I was leaving I said, "So, what is the cost?" 00:02:30.91\00:02:33.45 As he filled out my little receipt, 00:02:33.48\00:02:34.98 and he said the cost is $16. 00:02:35.02\00:02:37.22 I said $16 for the suit, the four pieces, 00:02:37.25\00:02:40.76 as well as the buttons. 00:02:40.79\00:02:42.12 And he said sure. 00:02:42.16\00:02:43.49 And of course, I will add on, 00:02:43.53\00:02:45.03 I will sew on one of the buttons for you. 00:02:45.06\00:02:48.00 No, problem. 00:02:48.03\00:02:49.36 So I left and I came back to pick up the dry cleaning. 00:02:49.40\00:02:52.17 Now it's interesting because he wasn't there. 00:02:52.20\00:02:55.47 And someone else delivered the dry cleaning to me. 00:02:55.50\00:02:59.17 But when it was delivered, the buttons weren't there, 00:02:59.21\00:03:02.14 it wasn't sewn on 00:03:02.18\00:03:03.51 and I was still charged the $16. 00:03:03.55\00:03:05.21 And then when I asked about the dry cleaning, 00:03:05.25\00:03:08.82 the young lady that provided the dry cleaning bag said, 00:03:08.85\00:03:11.25 oh, that will be extra. 00:03:11.29\00:03:12.89 No, I said but, he didn't say it was extra. 00:03:12.92\00:03:15.72 It was a part of the total cost of dry cleaning. 00:03:15.76\00:03:19.19 So it should be just $16. 00:03:19.23\00:03:21.06 Oh, no, I'll have to charge you 00:03:21.10\00:03:22.83 two extra dollars for two buttons 00:03:22.86\00:03:24.97 and they still didn't sew it on the suit. 00:03:25.00\00:03:27.07 I was so irritated. 00:03:27.10\00:03:29.00 I couldn't believe that in an era right now, 00:03:29.04\00:03:32.37 we're down economy 00:03:32.41\00:03:33.74 and you need every kind of client that you can get, 00:03:33.78\00:03:36.44 that they are willing to lose a client over $2. 00:03:36.48\00:03:39.08 Yes, I was upset. It was an irritant to me. 00:03:39.11\00:03:41.92 It's something that I shouldn't have to go through 00:03:41.95\00:03:43.79 when I'm giving them my hard earned cash 00:03:43.82\00:03:46.45 $2 extra for a couple of buttons 00:03:46.49\00:03:48.76 that I could have bought for 50 cents somewhere else. 00:03:48.79\00:03:51.49 And that's where I am going to come from. 00:03:51.53\00:03:53.43 That was a minor stressor in my life. 00:03:53.46\00:03:56.56 And that is what you all came back to me about. 00:03:56.60\00:04:00.67 What, what can happen if financial issues 00:04:00.70\00:04:05.64 become a major concern in your life, 00:04:05.67\00:04:07.68 if you are not in control of your finances? 00:04:07.71\00:04:10.55 A lot can happen. Stress. 00:04:10.58\00:04:13.68 So we're gonna take our time over the next few programs 00:04:13.72\00:04:18.05 and talk a little about stress 00:04:18.09\00:04:19.99 and what stress has to do with finances. 00:04:20.02\00:04:23.49 Did you know 00:04:23.53\00:04:24.86 that there was a study done by Holmes and Rahe, 00:04:24.89\00:04:27.90 University of Washington in 1967. 00:04:27.93\00:04:29.83 And they came up with-- 00:04:29.86\00:04:31.20 at that time a total of 55 stressors, 00:04:31.23\00:04:34.24 55 stressors that can be associated 00:04:34.27\00:04:37.41 with outside activities in your life, 00:04:37.44\00:04:40.98 things that are associated 00:04:41.01\00:04:43.11 with external circumstances in your life. 00:04:43.14\00:04:46.41 They said that stress is the reason 00:04:46.45\00:04:49.42 for 2/3rds of the total visits to the physician, 2/3rds. 00:04:49.45\00:04:53.69 It's also the leading cause of coronary artery disease, 00:04:53.72\00:04:57.36 cancer, accidents, respiratory diseases 00:04:57.39\00:05:00.53 besides many others. 00:05:00.56\00:05:03.37 Stress aggravates 00:05:03.40\00:05:04.73 the following type of illnesses, 00:05:04.77\00:05:06.20 hypertension, insomnia, diabetes, 00:05:06.23\00:05:10.14 Herpes, multiple sclerosis etcetera, 00:05:10.17\00:05:12.74 besides, stress that continues for a long periods of time 00:05:12.77\00:05:17.15 can lead to poor concentration, irritability, anger 00:05:17.18\00:05:22.02 and poor management or poor judgment. 00:05:22.05\00:05:24.85 Stress leads to marriage breakups. 00:05:24.89\00:05:27.62 We're gonna touch on some of that a little later on. 00:05:27.66\00:05:30.06 Family fights, road rage, suicides and violence. 00:05:30.09\00:05:35.26 What are the biggest causes of present day stress today? 00:05:35.30\00:05:39.43 We're gonna lay that out for you. 00:05:39.47\00:05:41.14 I'm gonna give you the top five causes of stress 00:05:41.17\00:05:47.01 in our lives today. 00:05:47.04\00:05:49.18 The number five cause for stress in our lives 00:05:49.21\00:05:52.88 are irritants in our daily life, irritants. 00:05:52.91\00:05:55.58 Number four on the list is health, 00:05:55.62\00:05:58.72 medical concerns, long term care. 00:05:58.75\00:06:01.62 Number three on the list is personal relationships. 00:06:01.66\00:06:05.79 Number two is workplace stress 00:06:05.83\00:06:09.73 and number one reason for stress in life 00:06:09.76\00:06:13.23 is financial problems, financial problems. 00:06:13.27\00:06:17.37 When you take a look at financial literacy, 00:06:17.41\00:06:19.17 and what we're all dealing with, 00:06:19.21\00:06:20.58 from the context of understanding 00:06:20.61\00:06:22.21 and communicating our personal finance, 00:06:22.24\00:06:24.91 financial concerns, it provides us an opportunity 00:06:24.95\00:06:28.72 to address how finance is impacting our daily life 00:06:28.75\00:06:32.49 and how it's stressing us out. 00:06:32.52\00:06:34.46 We're all being stressed. 00:06:34.49\00:06:35.82 I told you a story about myself. 00:06:35.86\00:06:37.69 I go into a dry cleaner and the stress involved there. 00:06:37.73\00:06:41.43 A small stress. 00:06:41.46\00:06:42.80 It's a $2 overcharge, but yet, it's the fairness 00:06:42.83\00:06:46.17 that should have been there for them 00:06:46.20\00:06:47.70 in treating a client as a client 00:06:47.74\00:06:49.84 and following through on their word. 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.87 But we're all dealing with stress. 00:06:51.91\00:06:53.74 All you have to do is go to your mailbox 00:06:53.78\00:06:55.88 or talk to different individuals 00:06:55.91\00:06:57.31 about the different things that are going on. 00:06:57.35\00:06:59.28 We have to watch ourselves on the internet. 00:06:59.31\00:07:01.52 There's insurance fraud that is going on right now. 00:07:01.55\00:07:04.45 The insurance industry is a big industry. 00:07:04.49\00:07:07.06 They are close to 7,000 companies 00:07:07.09\00:07:08.89 collecting over one trillion dollars 00:07:08.92\00:07:12.19 in premiums of the course of a year, 00:07:12.23\00:07:13.80 one trillion dollars. 00:07:13.83\00:07:15.16 And I guess, you now know 00:07:15.20\00:07:16.53 the context of a trillion dollars. 00:07:16.56\00:07:19.03 One dollar being paid out every second 00:07:19.07\00:07:22.67 over the course of 31,000 years and gives you an idea 00:07:22.70\00:07:25.54 of how much money and what size this industry is. 00:07:25.57\00:07:29.54 Insurance also has to deal with fraud. 00:07:29.58\00:07:31.68 There is approximately $80 billion in fraud, 00:07:31.71\00:07:35.08 non-health based insurance being estimated 00:07:35.12\00:07:37.35 at approximately $80 billon per year. 00:07:37.39\00:07:40.32 80 billion, we have to concern ourselves 00:07:40.36\00:07:42.52 with mass marketing fraud. 00:07:42.56\00:07:44.63 We have to concern ourselves with identity theft. 00:07:44.66\00:07:48.26 Everything in our daily lives is stressing us out. 00:07:48.30\00:07:51.07 What we put on the internet is no loner our information, 00:07:51.10\00:07:54.04 it's out there permanently and it's gone. 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.34 We have major web portals right now that are telling us 00:07:56.37\00:08:01.14 that the information you put on that can be used 00:08:01.18\00:08:03.65 and sold as a profit to that organization. 00:08:03.68\00:08:06.61 And some of them, 00:08:06.65\00:08:07.98 even if you delete your account, 00:08:08.02\00:08:10.59 your information remains. 00:08:10.62\00:08:12.25 It causes you stress to understand the images. 00:08:12.29\00:08:15.06 And personal information can be used 00:08:15.09\00:08:17.53 and shared to develop profiles about you, 00:08:17.56\00:08:20.26 so that people can mass market to you 00:08:20.30\00:08:22.86 on a more strategic basis. 00:08:22.90\00:08:25.00 So you take a look at being financially literate. 00:08:25.03\00:08:26.94 It has a whole host of issues, 00:08:26.97\00:08:29.74 a whole host of relevant concerns 00:08:29.77\00:08:31.94 that we need to address on a personal basis. 00:08:31.97\00:08:34.81 When you look at what's going on 00:08:34.84\00:08:36.85 from the government standpoint of a very specific debt, 00:08:36.88\00:08:40.35 you understand why we should address this concern. 00:08:40.38\00:08:43.95 There's some statistics out there 00:08:43.99\00:08:45.32 that U.S. National debt 00:08:45.35\00:08:46.89 rises in average of $3.8 billion per day. 00:08:46.92\00:08:50.93 The U.S. Government borrows 00:08:50.96\00:08:53.40 approximately $5 billion on every business day. 00:08:53.43\00:08:57.93 Our current debt limit 00:08:57.97\00:08:59.30 or debt ceiling is at $15.3 trillion. 00:08:59.33\00:09:02.97 $15.3 trillion 00:09:03.00\00:09:05.07 can equate to approximately $50, 000 per man, 00:09:05.11\00:09:08.08 woman, and child in the United States 00:09:08.11\00:09:10.08 or approximately $135,000 per tax paying individual. 00:09:10.11\00:09:14.38 That's a lot of money and you understand that our nation, 00:09:14.42\00:09:18.75 as well as the globe is dealing with economic 00:09:18.79\00:09:21.06 and financial issues. 00:09:21.09\00:09:22.42 You hear about crisis in different countries. 00:09:22.46\00:09:24.53 You hear about small countries that are unable to even keep up 00:09:24.56\00:09:29.06 with the interest payment on their debts. 00:09:29.10\00:09:31.47 And you begin to understand 00:09:31.50\00:09:32.83 what type of setting is happening 00:09:32.87\00:09:35.40 in and around the globe. 00:09:35.44\00:09:38.47 And then you begin to talk about personal finance 00:09:38.51\00:09:41.44 and that is a reason why we're discussing this issue. 00:09:41.48\00:09:44.18 We are in a race. 00:09:44.21\00:09:45.55 We're in a race for the long haul. 00:09:45.58\00:09:47.95 And we have to understand that this race has to do 00:09:47.98\00:09:52.12 with understanding how we fit in the scheme of things. 00:09:52.15\00:09:56.02 And as Christians we understand that this race-- 00:09:56.06\00:09:58.56 As we've talked about in Hebrews 12, 00:09:58.59\00:10:00.30 also has a lot to do with another verse in Luke 12. 00:10:00.33\00:10:04.63 Luke 12:15 talks about, 00:10:04.67\00:10:06.70 "Take care and guard against greed, 00:10:06.74\00:10:10.17 because life does not consists in the abundance 00:10:10.21\00:10:14.28 of what one person possesses." 00:10:14.31\00:10:16.91 So it's not about what you possess, 00:10:16.95\00:10:18.28 it's what you do with it, 00:10:18.31\00:10:19.65 because the story about the rich young man 00:10:19.68\00:10:22.52 and how he dealt with all of his asserts that he had 00:10:22.55\00:10:26.42 and God held him accountable. 00:10:26.45\00:10:28.16 And that's the same thing that we should be thinking about 00:10:28.19\00:10:31.09 as we look at what God has blessed us with. 00:10:31.13\00:10:33.80 However much or however little we have, 00:10:33.83\00:10:36.87 we have to use it in a way that God can bless us. 00:10:36.90\00:10:43.10 And so we look at a variety of things 00:10:43.14\00:10:45.71 and how we can alleviate some of that stress 00:10:45.74\00:10:48.04 and we can get those specific issues very soon. 00:10:48.08\00:10:52.15 Now, I took some time to ask people 00:10:52.18\00:10:55.78 in Venice Beach, California, about this issue called stress. 00:10:55.82\00:11:00.59 I'd like to take you to my intro 00:11:00.62\00:11:01.96 and show you Venice Beach and what several questions 00:11:01.99\00:11:06.90 we're planning to discuss with these individuals 00:11:06.93\00:11:10.00 Hey, y'all, this is Cordell Thomas. 00:11:11.43\00:11:12.93 I'm here at Venice Beach, California. 00:11:12.97\00:11:14.67 It's a wonderful place to be, 00:11:14.70\00:11:16.27 where you would think that most people are relaxed. 00:11:16.30\00:11:18.61 You know, those individuals here 00:11:18.64\00:11:19.97 walk in up and down the stretch. 00:11:20.01\00:11:21.38 As I'm looking up and down and looking out at the beach, 00:11:21.41\00:11:23.81 the wonderful blue water 00:11:23.85\00:11:25.45 and you think that most people are in great shape, 00:11:25.48\00:11:28.55 crisis aren't happening, stress, life is stress free, 00:11:28.58\00:11:31.62 but that's not necessarily the case. 00:11:31.65\00:11:33.25 When you take a look 00:11:33.29\00:11:34.62 at the big picture of United States debt 00:11:34.66\00:11:37.83 or deficit this past year, in 2012 was $1.33 trillion, 00:11:37.86\00:11:42.76 one trillion dollars. 00:11:42.80\00:11:44.13 Do you have a concept of what one trillion is? 00:11:44.17\00:11:46.43 Well, here's one way of figuring it out. 00:11:46.47\00:11:48.64 If you spent a dollar a second, 00:11:48.67\00:11:50.44 you could spend a million dollars in 12 days. 00:11:50.47\00:11:53.07 You would spend a billion dollars in 31 years. 00:11:53.11\00:11:56.48 You would spend one trillion dollars 00:11:56.51\00:11:58.15 in 31,000 years. 00:11:58.18\00:11:59.91 That is the key 00:11:59.95\00:12:01.28 to understanding the volume of one trillion. 00:12:01.32\00:12:03.02 Yet, the United States debt, United States deficit 00:12:03.05\00:12:06.65 at this point in time, in 2012 is $1.33 trillion. 00:12:06.69\00:12:11.16 And that puts you a perceptive 00:12:11.19\00:12:13.29 on what's going on a national perceptive of national debt. 00:12:13.33\00:12:17.60 Bring it down to the family level, 00:12:17.63\00:12:18.97 and you begin to understand 00:12:19.00\00:12:20.34 that there's a lot of things going on. 00:12:20.37\00:12:22.10 This year with Take It To The Bank, 00:12:22.14\00:12:25.04 we'll be talking about a variety of issues And guess what? 00:15:24.32\00:15:27.49 You guys cause me a little stress 00:15:27.52\00:15:29.12 because you respond sometimes to several of the programs 00:15:29.16\00:15:32.39 that we have placed on 3ABN. 00:15:32.43\00:15:35.03 It's quite interesting some of things you said. 00:15:35.06\00:15:36.83 One of the comments was-- 00:15:36.87\00:15:38.47 "Cordell, you look like you're having too much fun up there. 00:15:38.50\00:15:41.30 It doesn't look like you're serious." 00:15:41.34\00:15:43.47 Take me seriously. 00:15:43.51\00:15:47.21 This thing is more serious than you would ever think it is. 00:15:47.24\00:15:49.21 Debt is causing a lot of death, destruction, 00:15:49.24\00:15:51.68 and taking families apart 00:15:51.71\00:15:53.38 because people are not in control of their finances. 00:15:53.42\00:15:56.12 Remember, when we talked about, 00:15:56.15\00:15:57.49 when we said about being financially literate. 00:15:57.52\00:15:59.09 Being financially literate says that I know 00:15:59.12\00:16:01.72 where are my revenue is coming from. 00:16:01.76\00:16:03.49 Where are my pay check? Where are my money is coming? 00:16:03.53\00:16:05.89 I know where my expenses are. I have developed a budget. 00:16:05.93\00:16:08.80 I know exactly what I need to do 00:16:08.83\00:16:10.77 for future expenditures that I'm not aware of, 00:16:10.80\00:16:13.54 such as emergencies that come up. 00:16:13.57\00:16:15.60 Those emergencies can be as simple as a home fixture 00:16:15.64\00:16:19.47 that goes bad or a broken water heater, 00:16:19.51\00:16:22.11 to as much as a major medical bill 00:16:22.14\00:16:24.38 or even an emergency such as a job loss. 00:16:24.41\00:16:27.88 Many of these things can come in to take, 00:16:27.92\00:16:30.99 take a lot out of you and out of your funds 00:16:31.02\00:16:34.46 if you are not careful. 00:16:34.49\00:16:36.26 Many people are looking to get access to your money. 00:16:36.29\00:16:38.96 I'm getting calls at this point in time 00:16:38.99\00:16:41.20 because I actually took it upon myself to invite my wife 00:16:41.23\00:16:44.53 to go to one of these Timeshare things, 00:16:44.57\00:16:47.80 where you go and sit for 45 minutes to an hour, 00:16:47.84\00:16:50.47 turns out to be an hour and a half. 00:16:50.51\00:16:52.37 And then afterwards, 00:16:52.41\00:16:53.74 they try to hard sell you on something 00:16:53.78\00:16:55.18 you don't really necessarily that you don't need. 00:16:55.21\00:16:58.55 And then of course, they offer you this, 00:16:58.58\00:17:01.05 this enticement with a trip. 00:17:01.08\00:17:03.25 I tried it one time. And guess what happened? 00:17:03.28\00:17:06.45 That trip actually ended up costing more 00:17:06.49\00:17:09.56 because it really wasn't free. 00:17:09.59\00:17:10.93 You had to pay for certain items. 00:17:10.96\00:17:12.29 You had to pay for a couple of other things 00:17:12.33\00:17:13.86 and that could be considered fraud in certain areas. 00:17:13.90\00:17:17.10 We took much care in understanding now, 00:17:17.13\00:17:19.90 that when people call us, we don't answer them, 00:17:19.93\00:17:22.64 we don't take them seriously 00:17:22.67\00:17:24.57 unless we do our own due diligence on our research. 00:17:24.61\00:17:27.91 It's important that you do it and I take this very seriously 00:17:27.94\00:17:30.95 because many lives are being changed-- 00:17:30.98\00:17:33.52 We are not taking for, taking seriously 00:17:33.55\00:17:37.65 the impact that debt has on our lives 00:17:37.69\00:17:40.49 and we are looking at stress. 00:17:40.52\00:17:41.86 What was the top cause of stress? 00:17:41.89\00:17:43.53 As we saw in some of our takes on, 00:17:43.56\00:17:45.86 in Venice Beach, many of them mirrored the statistics 00:17:45.89\00:17:50.17 which said the number one cause of stress is finances. 00:17:50.20\00:17:53.94 Personal relationships is on number three. 00:17:53.97\00:17:56.27 And then work related stress is number two. 00:17:56.30\00:17:59.17 So, yes, I am having fun. 00:17:59.21\00:18:01.34 I have the sense of peace in my heart 00:18:01.38\00:18:04.15 and I always try to have a smile on my face. 00:18:04.18\00:18:06.48 Really, is it all that serious? But, yes, it is. 00:18:06.51\00:18:08.75 And I'm trying to convey that. 00:18:08.78\00:18:10.12 So the comment was very well taken. 00:18:10.15\00:18:12.42 That I don't want you to think that I'm sitting here 00:18:12.45\00:18:14.79 having a lot of fun, making light of this serious issue. 00:18:14.82\00:18:18.73 But my countenance is this. I'm at peace. 00:18:18.76\00:18:21.63 My life is not as stressful as most. 00:18:21.66\00:18:24.13 I try to take the Sabbath day off 00:18:24.17\00:18:26.43 and relax from all my duties and forget about debt 00:18:26.47\00:18:29.70 and management and finances. 00:18:29.74\00:18:31.34 And I think you should too, 00:18:31.37\00:18:32.71 in managing stress and understanding 00:18:32.74\00:18:34.81 how that stress impacts your life. 00:18:34.84\00:18:37.55 When I was a child, 00:18:37.58\00:18:38.91 I didn't have these issues of called stress. 00:18:38.95\00:18:41.02 My son doesn't worry about certain issues, 00:18:41.05\00:18:43.42 but he does see what his friends get. 00:18:43.45\00:18:46.45 And so I remember the conversation I had 00:18:46.49\00:18:49.59 when he decided to say, "Dad, I want to get a bike. 00:18:49.62\00:18:52.76 Can you just put on your credit card? 00:18:52.79\00:18:54.13 Can you buy it for me?" 00:18:54.16\00:18:55.50 Oh, it'd be easy to do when buying the gift. 00:18:55.53\00:18:57.33 But in teaching a lesson about what it means to buy something, 00:18:57.37\00:19:01.47 I gave him the goal of raising the $70 and 65 cents 00:19:01.50\00:19:05.21 to pay for the bike. 00:19:05.24\00:19:06.98 And he did.
