getting into 00:00:49.08\00:00:51.58 when you go to purchase a vehicle. 00:00:51.61\00:00:53.78 It's very interesting to me 00:00:53.82\00:00:55.15 because we do financial literacy 00:00:55.18\00:00:57.65 in to young people in inner cities, 00:00:57.69\00:00:59.35 and it's very interesting when you talk to kids 00:00:59.39\00:01:03.16 about what they want. 00:01:03.19\00:01:05.29 In fact, to give you little idea, 00:01:05.33\00:01:07.40 they have a lot of this online software kids 00:01:07.43\00:01:09.76 to graduate from some of these literacy programs 00:01:09.80\00:01:12.77 have to navigate their way through different things 00:01:12.80\00:01:16.17 such as the acquisition of our home, 00:01:16.20\00:01:17.91 give them example of that what's going off 00:01:17.94\00:01:19.31 from that standpoint, to buying furniture, 00:01:19.34\00:01:21.98 to getting a car, and once they get out, 00:01:22.01\00:01:25.48 they have to navigate that, that landscape in a way 00:01:25.51\00:01:29.92 that they keep things all under budget, 00:01:29.95\00:01:33.66 keep things under budget. 00:01:33.69\00:01:35.02 One of the things 00:01:35.06\00:01:36.39 that is arbitrarily thrown on them is 00:01:36.42\00:01:40.33 when you enter that landscape, 00:01:40.36\00:01:42.40 they're told who they are, 00:01:42.43\00:01:43.77 so they could be anything from a doctor 00:01:43.80\00:01:45.33 with a $150,000 year salary, 00:01:45.37\00:01:47.67 to a teacher with $65,000 a year salary, 00:01:47.70\00:01:50.51 to a maintenance worker, 00:01:50.54\00:01:53.17 to a air traffic controller, 00:01:53.21\00:01:56.54 you are given a label as you enter that environment, 00:01:56.58\00:01:59.91 and then you have to maintain a budget 00:01:59.95\00:02:02.45 keeping it under that annual salary, 00:02:02.48\00:02:04.82 and making it through to the end and graduating. 00:02:04.85\00:02:07.82 You can't actually graduate from the financial led program 00:02:07.86\00:02:10.33 until you navigate your way through 00:02:10.36\00:02:12.79 and keep things under budget. 00:02:12.83\00:02:14.50 Now there's several things that happen in that context 00:02:14.53\00:02:16.73 is they want to buy the newest furniture. 00:02:16.77\00:02:20.10 You know what if you are a college student, 00:02:20.14\00:02:21.54 if you're labeled a college student just entering a college 00:02:21.57\00:02:24.41 and you only make about $16,000-$18,000 a year 00:02:24.44\00:02:28.38 of supplemental income, 00:02:28.41\00:02:29.74 that could be a label you get and the context is this. 00:02:29.78\00:02:34.08 When you put someone in that environment, 00:02:34.12\00:02:35.85 you begin to see the real person they are. 00:02:35.88\00:02:38.39 It's not a real world perspective 00:02:38.42\00:02:40.26 because they don't have to deal with all the scams 00:02:40.29\00:02:42.82 and Ponzi schemes that may be out there 00:02:42.86\00:02:45.79 to take advantage of them. 00:02:45.83\00:02:47.60 So that's really not real world, 00:02:47.63\00:02:49.10 but they do have a captive environment 00:02:49.13\00:02:50.77 that they can begin the process of making important decisions 00:02:50.80\00:02:54.84 about where they live, what they do with their money, 00:02:54.87\00:02:59.51 where they go, what type of car they purchase, and technically, 00:02:59.54\00:03:04.11 you know what kind of house they can eventually Afford. 00:03:04.15\00:03:07.02 So you see a lot of these kids buying, 00:03:07.05\00:03:09.62 trying to get into expensive homes 00:03:09.65\00:03:11.42 or verbalizing saying, 00:03:11.45\00:03:14.09 "Wow, if I could get that home, I would be well off 00:03:14.12\00:03:18.16 or and I would really like to buy that Lamborghini, 00:03:18.19\00:03:21.63 but I don't think I can afford the $2000 a month cost 00:03:21.66\00:03:24.53 that would take to get it 00:03:24.57\00:03:26.30 or the concept of buying new furniture 00:03:26.33\00:03:30.44 to put in or fulfill or layout 00:03:30.47\00:03:33.84 for the layout of their homes. 00:03:33.88\00:03:35.21 So there are a lot of things you learn about young people 00:03:35.24\00:03:37.65 as they go through and navigate this landscape, 00:03:37.68\00:03:40.85 and the same thing applies to we as older individuals, 00:03:40.88\00:03:45.59 more mature individuals. 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.39 As you look at the context of what we do, 00:03:48.42\00:03:53.13 and how we do things, and the decisions we make. 00:03:53.16\00:03:55.90 You can begin to see 00:03:58.13\00:04:00.27 what challenge we have as adults. 00:04:00.30\00:04:02.10 We are greedy by nature. 00:04:02.14\00:04:03.51 We're greedy by nature. 00:04:03.54\00:04:04.87 And it takes us to the Bible verse 00:04:04.91\00:04:06.78 that talks about that. 00:04:06.81\00:04:08.74 In Luke, Luke 12:13, 14, and 15, 00:04:08.78\00:04:13.72 what does it say? 00:04:13.75\00:04:15.08 He said, Jesus is saying now, watch out, 00:04:18.65\00:04:22.19 "Be on your guard against all kinds of greed. 00:04:22.22\00:04:25.89 A man's life does not consist 00:04:25.93\00:04:28.56 in the abundance of his possessions." 00:04:28.60\00:04:31.00 But yet the first thing we see that young people are doing 00:04:31.03\00:04:34.50 is they're going after the most expensive items, 00:04:34.54\00:04:38.07 and trying to attain those things 00:04:38.11\00:04:40.34 and fill their lives with those things, 00:04:40.38\00:04:43.04 and we identify with that 00:04:43.08\00:04:44.75 because we are consumer driven society. 00:04:44.78\00:04:48.15 When I first came out to California 00:04:52.62\00:04:54.46 or even before that time, 00:04:54.49\00:04:56.62 I had an opportunity to work in an automotive manufacturer 00:04:56.66\00:04:59.53 as in with a company. 00:04:59.56\00:05:02.16 The company was of such that 00:05:02.20\00:05:04.73 I never had to learn the context of what it took 00:05:04.77\00:05:09.50 to own and to run a car. 00:05:09.54\00:05:11.61 In fact, when I worked with this company 00:05:11.64\00:05:13.44 you were given every six months, 00:05:13.48\00:05:15.01 you were given a new car 00:05:15.04\00:05:17.41 to drive from that manufacturer. 00:05:17.45\00:05:19.78 It was a part of the deal, a part of the contract 00:05:19.81\00:05:22.92 because as a sales person going and talking 00:05:22.95\00:05:25.19 to the different organizations and dealerships, 00:05:25.22\00:05:27.92 you had to have that transportation that showed that 00:05:27.96\00:05:30.39 you worked with this organization. 00:05:30.43\00:05:32.56 Now here is what's key 00:05:32.59\00:05:34.20 is as I drove a car and got it for free, 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.87 I didn't really understand the full context 00:05:36.90\00:05:39.13 of what the cost of a car really was 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.17 because it was given to me. 00:05:42.20\00:05:45.81 Being given something and not having to pay 00:05:45.84\00:05:48.01 for something means you don't really understand 00:05:48.04\00:05:50.11 and respect the full context of what it takes 00:05:50.15\00:05:53.01 to run something, what it takes to, 00:05:53.05\00:05:55.15 to maintain something and what it takes to, 00:05:55.18\00:05:58.62 to really appreciate what you have. 00:05:58.65\00:06:01.56 It was in those times that I began to learn the context 00:06:01.59\00:06:04.26 of enjoyment and going in driving 00:06:04.29\00:06:06.66 and driving this new cars 00:06:06.70\00:06:08.03 and gaining a specific objective, 00:06:08.06\00:06:10.40 but there was a learning experience that I gained 00:06:10.43\00:06:13.00 that I would like to share with you. 00:06:13.03\00:06:14.97 One of the mechanisms for training sales people 00:06:15.00\00:06:17.61 at that time was to send one of the representatives 00:06:17.64\00:06:20.08 into a respective dealership and get them to experience 00:06:20.11\00:06:23.35 the sales process. 00:06:23.38\00:06:24.91 Now it shows two dealerships 00:06:24.95\00:06:26.31 on two different ends of the spectrum. 00:06:26.35\00:06:28.38 One is customer service and treating you as an adult 00:06:28.42\00:06:32.25 and making sure you're comfortable 00:06:32.29\00:06:33.86 with the purchase process and not selling you a car 00:06:33.89\00:06:36.39 that you don't necessarily need, 00:06:36.42\00:06:37.76 but working with you to develop a timeframe 00:06:37.79\00:06:40.90 for your purchase process and giving you the time 00:06:40.93\00:06:42.96 necessary without hassling in. 00:06:43.00\00:06:45.00 The other one was on the other end of the spectrum 00:06:45.03\00:06:46.84 where their philosophy was, we don't care about you, 00:06:46.87\00:06:50.97 all we care about is selling the X car. 00:06:51.01\00:06:53.34 So I don't care if we see you anymore 00:06:53.38\00:06:54.74 after this purchase process, 00:06:54.78\00:06:56.11 we're gonna hammer you into a car, 00:06:56.14\00:06:58.45 and once you get into that car, 00:06:58.48\00:06:59.95 we really don't care what happens to you 00:06:59.98\00:07:01.38 after that because all we need right now is 00:07:01.42\00:07:04.52 to make a profit off of you. 00:07:04.55\00:07:06.86 Different mentalities altogether, 00:07:06.89\00:07:08.52 so I said I actually have no problem. 00:07:08.56\00:07:09.89 I'll go, I'll take this experience and learn from it 00:07:09.92\00:07:12.66 and I went into the first dealership 00:07:12.69\00:07:14.73 I went to were the one that didn't really care about 00:07:14.76\00:07:16.67 even I drove in and, 00:07:16.70\00:07:19.93 and pulled into the sales department and, 00:07:19.97\00:07:23.34 and several sales people surrounded me 00:07:23.37\00:07:25.41 and we talked to them about what you're looking for, 00:07:25.44\00:07:27.28 what you want, why is that you're here. 00:07:27.31\00:07:29.78 And I said I'm looking 00:07:29.81\00:07:31.15 at the possible purchase of a new car. 00:07:31.18\00:07:34.32 I'm just, you know coming in there to evaluate. 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.05 They said, well, let's evaluate your used car 00:07:36.08\00:07:38.15 so they took my eyes, which is a control process 00:07:38.19\00:07:40.49 and they left to evaluate my car. 00:07:40.52\00:07:43.56 While I was, they were evaluating the car, 00:07:43.59\00:07:45.69 I'm in there with the sales staff 00:07:45.73\00:07:47.06 and I'm talking to them and the sales person goes, 00:07:47.10\00:07:50.30 okay, cool what it take to get you in a car? 00:07:50.33\00:07:52.30 I said I'm just looking right now. 00:07:52.33\00:07:53.67 Well, why are you here? 00:07:53.70\00:07:55.04 And then it elevated to their next sales person 00:07:55.07\00:07:56.91 or their manager and to the next manager, 00:07:56.94\00:07:58.87 I didn't know how many managers I talked to, 00:07:58.91\00:08:00.48 but I'm trying to tell them, look, I'm not here to buy, 00:08:00.51\00:08:02.64 I'm here to just look 00:08:02.68\00:08:04.01 and try to make an evaluation of the car 00:08:04.05\00:08:05.55 and at that time the manager in charge 00:08:05.58\00:08:07.98 walks into the room and looks at me, 00:08:08.02\00:08:10.02 why in the world are you here anyway, 00:08:10.05\00:08:11.89 if you are not here to buy a car? 00:08:11.92\00:08:13.36 It was a very abrupt and very abusive 00:08:13.39\00:08:15.36 and very abrasive experience for me, 00:08:15.39\00:08:18.06 and sooner or later 00:08:18.09\00:08:19.43 I was able to get out through. 00:08:19.46\00:08:20.80 I felt I was locked into this jail 00:08:20.83\00:08:22.26 because they wouldn't let me go, 00:08:22.30\00:08:23.73 they wouldn't let me go and then they had my car, 00:08:23.77\00:08:26.40 they had my keys and what do I supposed to do. 00:08:26.43\00:08:29.67 So eventually he says, yeah, you can get your car, 00:08:29.70\00:08:31.91 your car is out back. 00:08:31.94\00:08:33.27 And I had to find my car and find my keys 00:08:33.31\00:08:37.31 that were sitting on the top of the car 00:08:37.35\00:08:39.48 and eventually go home. 00:08:39.51\00:08:41.02 It was a bad experience, but I learned 00:08:41.05\00:08:43.99 that we have to deal with this type of scenarios 00:08:44.02\00:08:46.65 when you're looking to purchase something, 00:08:46.69\00:08:48.06 but in that case I understood that you're not gonna sell me 00:08:48.09\00:08:53.06 something I don't want. 00:08:53.09\00:08:54.43 I don't want this. 00:08:54.46\00:08:56.36 I am the purchaser, I will buy what I need. 00:08:56.40\00:08:59.07 Okay, so I go to the next dealer 00:08:59.10\00:09:00.44 that they told me to go to and that was the most 00:09:00.47\00:09:03.57 relaxing experiences I ever been through. 00:09:03.61\00:09:06.04 Learning the context of what it means to understand 00:09:06.07\00:09:11.11 and to empathize and to work with the consumer 00:09:11.15\00:09:15.38 and make sure that they are comfortable. 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.12 I didn't feel forced, I just told them, look, 00:09:17.15\00:09:18.85 I'm here to look, they gave me all the time in the world, 00:09:18.89\00:09:20.82 they allowed me to test drive, I came back, sat in the lounge, 00:09:20.86\00:09:24.23 gave me cool drink and those type of things. 00:09:24.26\00:09:27.96 And as I sat there, I felt at peace and eventually I said, 00:09:28.00\00:09:30.67 you know what, I'm not here to buy right now. 00:09:30.70\00:09:32.90 I'm just here to evaluate. 00:09:32.93\00:09:34.27 That's fine Mr. Thomas, 00:09:56.79\00:09:58.59 Therapy is understanding 00:09:58.63\00:10:00.70 the different type of individuals and people, 00:10:00.73\00:10:03.30 sales individuals that you're going to deal with 00:10:03.33\00:10:04.93 an ongoing basis. 00:10:04.97\00:10:06.74 It's key to understanding how you can control the process 00:10:06.77\00:10:10.17 and ensure that shopping therapy for you 00:10:10.21\00:10:13.78 isn't walking away from a store 00:10:13.81\00:10:19.11 or a dealership with a product 00:10:19.15\00:10:22.18 that you don't necessarily need. 00:10:22.22\00:10:25.75 It was a complete learning experience 00:10:25.79\00:10:27.46 because I also learned through that whole scenario 00:10:27.49\00:10:30.59 is the fact that there are many costs 00:10:30.63\00:10:33.70 that go into the acquisition of a product. 00:10:33.73\00:10:36.67 And in this case what I would like to chat 00:10:36.70\00:10:38.83 with you about is the acquisition of a car. 00:10:38.87\00:10:42.74 What goes in to a car when you look to purchase it? 00:10:42.77\00:10:46.34 Many kids were asked that same question 00:10:46.37\00:10:48.08 and all they think about in, 00:10:48.11\00:10:49.51 in our financial literacy courses. 00:10:49.54\00:10:51.11 "Yeah, I want to get a car when I get 16, 00:10:51.15\00:10:52.61 I'm going to go out and I'm going to buy a car, 00:10:52.65\00:10:54.22 and I think I can afford to spend $200 to $225 a month 00:10:54.25\00:10:58.95 of my hard-earned monthly income 00:10:58.99\00:11:01.42 to pay for that car. 00:11:01.46\00:11:03.49 And then you ask them is that the only cost 00:11:03.53\00:11:06.09 that you think is associated with a car? 00:11:06.13\00:11:09.10 And they think that is the case until you begin the process 00:11:09.13\00:11:12.13 of discussing with them the overall ramifications 00:11:12.17\00:11:17.64 and what they get themselves into 00:11:17.67\00:11:20.54 when they think about a car. 00:11:20.58\00:11:23.38 So today, as we get into this, 00:11:23.41\00:11:26.21 remember there's two things I want you to be aware of 00:11:26.25\00:11:28.82 that you are a steward, you need to be faithful, 00:11:28.85\00:11:32.05 you need to understand 00:11:32.09\00:11:33.42 what your wants and your needs are, 00:11:33.46\00:11:34.89 you need to understand that you as a buyer 00:11:34.92\00:11:38.53 control the overall process. 00:11:38.56\00:11:40.66 So let's get started. 00:11:40.70\00:11:42.03 I'm going to give you a case application. 00:11:48.10\00:11:52.47 We'll discuss and we'll begin the process of embellishing 00:11:52.51\00:11:57.75 on this issue called 00:11:57.78\00:11:59.11 "Cars and Loans." 00:11:59.15\00:12:02.85 Angelina drives a seven year old car 00:12:02.88\00:12:07.09 that recently needed about $1300 in repairs. 00:12:07.12\00:12:11.39 Each day she drives approximately 46 miles 00:12:11.43\00:12:14.90 to and from her job round trip. 00:12:14.93\00:12:18.47 What actions should she take to decide if she should, 00:12:18.50\00:12:22.30 one, keep the car, 00:12:22.34\00:12:24.71 two, buy a new or used car, 00:12:24.74\00:12:27.44 and or three, buy a new car? 00:12:27.48\00:12:31.61 Now, many factors 00:12:31.65\00:12:35.32 go into this decision. 00:12:35.35\00:12:36.69 First of all, 00:12:36.72\00:12:38.15 Angelina must consider her financial situation, 00:12:38.19\00:12:40.76 so we go back to the beginning. 00:12:40.79\00:12:44.49 In any kind of financial situation 00:12:44.53\00:12:46.19 where there's a potential transaction, 00:12:46.23\00:12:48.86 you go back to your finances. 00:12:48.90\00:12:51.43 You take everything back to your budget. 00:12:51.47\00:12:55.10 You consider the fact that I have planned 00:12:55.14\00:12:57.91 for this acquisition if it's necessary. 00:12:57.94\00:13:00.18 You consider the fact that 00:13:00.21\00:13:01.54 I have it as a part of my budget. 00:13:01.58\00:13:03.35 It's a part of my mid term. 00:13:03.38\00:13:05.48 What is a mid term? 00:13:05.51\00:13:06.85 Three months to a year goals 00:13:06.88\00:13:09.25 in acquiring this car and I have already saved 00:13:09.28\00:13:11.65 approximately $3,000 for this acquisition or this purchase. 00:13:11.69\00:13:15.26 So take everything back to your budget. 00:13:15.29\00:13:17.99 How does all of this fit in to your budget 00:13:18.03\00:13:20.20 and make sure that you have evaluated your budget 00:13:20.23\00:13:23.23 and you have stayed faithful to saving and putting money 00:13:23.26\00:13:27.04 away to that specific account 00:13:27.07\00:13:29.07 so that you can go forward with 00:13:29.10\00:13:31.24 within that timeframe the purchase of a new car. 00:13:31.27\00:13:34.08 But, first of all, 00:13:34.11\00:13:36.68 check your financial situation based on a realistic budget. 00:13:36.71\00:13:41.02 What amount can she afford to spend 00:13:41.05\00:13:43.49 for buying a different vehicle next? 00:13:43.52\00:13:47.09 Now, when we take a look at that, 00:13:47.12\00:13:48.46 we should think immediately about the 2010 rule. 00:13:48.49\00:13:51.79 What is a 2010 rule? 00:13:51.83\00:13:53.63 You should not expect to exceed 20 percent 00:13:53.66\00:13:56.56 of your annual net income in credit. 00:13:56.60\00:14:01.74 And then the 10 percent means 00:14:01.77\00:14:03.10 you shouldn't expect to pay back 00:14:03.14\00:14:04.97 more than 10 percent of your monthly net income 00:14:05.01\00:14:08.84 to repayment of that debt 2010 rule. 00:14:08.88\00:14:11.61 So how much can she afford to spend 00:14:11.65\00:14:14.95 is based on 00:14:28.60\00:14:32.53 of all of the problems. 00:14:32.57\00:14:33.90 I mean, when you think about a seven year old car. 00:14:33.94\00:14:36.57 I think it's about the right time to change 00:14:36.60\00:14:39.04 the timing belt based on how much miles, 00:14:39.07\00:14:40.91 that doesn't give us enough information, 00:14:40.94\00:14:42.51 but if it's a seven year old car 00:14:42.54\00:14:44.68 and someone is driving 00:14:44.71\00:14:46.05 approximately 20,000 miles a year, 00:14:46.08\00:14:47.58 the car has approximately 140,000 miles on it. 00:14:47.62\00:14:50.85 A car typically requires that their timing belt is changed 00:14:50.89\00:14:54.16 or at least check at around 100,000 miles. 00:14:54.19\00:14:57.49 You can check on that, each car may be slightly different. 00:14:57.53\00:15:00.10 So in this case $1,300 worth of repairs may be a necessity 00:15:00.13\00:15:04.63 because of the age of her car. 00:15:04.67\00:15:06.74 It doesn't necessarily mean that 00:15:06.77\00:15:08.24 her car is no longer road worthy. 00:15:08.27\00:15:10.31 It just means it needs that repair to take care of it, 00:15:10.34\00:15:12.94 and she had the savings in place
