read about 00:00:45.17\00:00:46.51 had an interesting interaction with a company, 00:00:46.54\00:00:48.71 an online company that was willing to give her 00:00:48.74\00:00:51.18 specific coupons for discounts on her groceries, 00:00:51.21\00:00:54.05 but they were asking her for specific information, 00:00:54.08\00:00:56.12 and she felt the requirement of giving them, 00:00:56.15\00:00:59.22 obliged to give them the information 00:00:59.25\00:01:01.06 they were asking about her, 00:01:01.09\00:01:02.52 and it became very, very, detailed in, 00:01:02.56\00:01:06.70 in the questions they asked. 00:01:06.73\00:01:08.36 For example, "Where do you live?" 00:01:08.40\00:01:10.43 Oh, that's general type of information 00:01:10.47\00:01:12.00 but they asked them, "How old are you?" 00:01:12.03\00:01:13.60 And then, of course, they're asking about her 00:01:13.64\00:01:15.10 ethnicity or background 00:01:15.14\00:01:16.47 whether she was a female or male, 00:01:16.50\00:01:19.37 those types of things. 00:01:19.41\00:01:20.74 And that went into more detail, 00:01:20.78\00:01:22.11 "What do you like to do in the evening? 00:01:22.14\00:01:23.71 Where do you like to go out and eat?" 00:01:23.75\00:01:25.08 They asked about how much she made on a yearly basis? 00:01:25.11\00:01:28.78 What magazines she liked to read? 00:01:28.82\00:01:31.39 Many different things about her personal life, 00:01:31.42\00:01:33.76 and she just typed the information in, 00:01:33.79\00:01:35.72 and she gave them the information because why? 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.49 The end result was getting the coupons. 00:01:38.53\00:01:43.57 Okay, so she sent the information in, 00:01:43.60\00:01:45.23 and she had problems actually getting the coupons. 00:01:45.27\00:01:47.47 I don't know if they actually in the story wrote about 00:01:47.50\00:01:50.14 that she actually got the coupons 00:01:50.17\00:01:51.51 but that was the intent. 00:01:51.54\00:01:53.04 But what was striking about the story 00:01:53.07\00:01:55.94 was the fact that her information, 00:01:55.98\00:01:58.81 once she was typing it in 00:01:58.85\00:02:00.42 there are many different issues, 00:02:00.45\00:02:01.85 you need to know about your own privacy 00:02:01.88\00:02:04.52 and the information that is out there about you. 00:02:04.55\00:02:07.56 The moment you hit the return key 00:02:07.59\00:02:09.22 or the go key or the submit key 00:02:09.26\00:02:11.13 that information is gone. 00:02:11.16\00:02:12.86 And with the technologies that we have 00:02:12.89\00:02:15.53 they go very, very quickly. 00:02:15.56\00:02:17.10 In fact there are companies out there 00:02:17.13\00:02:19.40 that the reason they're asking for this information 00:02:19.43\00:02:22.40 is that they'll take your information 00:02:22.44\00:02:25.74 and they're gonna sell it. 00:02:25.77\00:02:27.24 It's a money making venture. 00:02:27.28\00:02:28.81 I know working in the automotive industry, 00:02:28.84\00:02:30.35 I worked in the marketing department 00:02:30.38\00:02:32.51 and for sales 00:02:32.55\00:02:33.88 and we needed to know as much as we possibly could 00:02:33.92\00:02:35.98 about you as a consumer. 00:02:36.02\00:02:38.75 The more we know about you, 00:02:38.79\00:02:40.12 the better we're able to fine tune 00:02:40.16\00:02:42.92 and tailor-make our media, 00:02:42.96\00:02:44.73 our advertising directly towards you. 00:02:44.76\00:02:47.90 We know where you look when you go into a store, 00:02:47.93\00:02:50.37 so we put things right at eye level. 00:02:50.40\00:02:53.44 We put the things that are most expensive at eye level 00:02:53.47\00:02:56.30 because we gonna pay more 00:02:56.34\00:02:58.04 for that kind of advertising space. 00:02:58.07\00:03:00.68 But what happened after that was key 00:03:00.71\00:03:02.68 because she waited and out of the blue, 00:03:02.71\00:03:05.48 maybe 2 months later, 00:03:05.51\00:03:06.98 she got an explicit letter from somebody 00:03:07.02\00:03:11.29 that knew all these details about her. 00:03:11.32\00:03:15.09 She didn't realize that the small company 00:03:15.12\00:03:16.76 that was giving her the benefit of these coupons 00:03:16.79\00:03:19.26 was also a company that didn't have the headcount 00:03:19.29\00:03:22.26 in the company, in the organization 00:03:22.30\00:03:24.47 to process all of that data 00:03:24.50\00:03:26.74 and didn't realize that the company 00:03:26.77\00:03:28.90 forwarded information to a local prison 00:03:28.94\00:03:32.91 where prisoners were going through the data 00:03:32.94\00:03:35.68 and helping to get it processed. 00:03:35.71\00:03:39.18 The more you know, the more you realize. 00:03:39.21\00:03:42.38 What I recommend you do if you buy a computer 00:03:42.42\00:03:45.65 or if you buy a big ticket item. 00:03:45.69\00:03:47.72 I had an emergency situation and fortunately 00:03:47.76\00:03:51.69 we had budgeted for but an emergency 00:03:51.73\00:03:53.70 where the water heater broke down, 00:03:53.73\00:03:55.76 and we had to go and buy a new water heater. 00:03:55.80\00:03:59.10 In that water heater purchase there is a registration request 00:03:59.13\00:04:04.07 that they make of you, to go online 00:04:04.11\00:04:06.94 and to fill this information out 00:04:06.98\00:04:08.64 so that you have given the data they need 00:04:08.68\00:04:11.88 about not only of the water heater 00:04:11.91\00:04:14.45 that you've purchased 00:04:14.48\00:04:15.82 but also where you got it and what the serial number is 00:04:15.85\00:04:19.15 and that type of information. 00:04:19.19\00:04:22.42 I didn't. 00:04:22.46\00:04:24.33 The one thing you have to realize is most purchases 00:04:24.36\00:04:28.30 and most acquisitions those things 00:04:28.33\00:04:29.66 that you get from a store 00:04:29.70\00:04:31.53 are pretty much covered for a certain amount of time, 00:04:31.57\00:04:33.23 whether it be for 30 days 00:04:33.27\00:04:34.87 or if you got a year warranty on that specific item. 00:04:34.90\00:04:38.61 The warranty card or the registration card, 00:04:38.64\00:04:41.78 warranty card's a little bit more detail that they ask for, 00:04:41.81\00:04:44.35 registration is pretty much typical questions 00:04:44.38\00:04:47.25 that they ask for in reference the name, 00:04:47.28\00:04:49.72 address, phone number, email address, 00:04:49.75\00:04:53.29 serial number of the equipment you purchased, 00:04:53.32\00:04:55.12 the date you purchased it that type of thing. 00:04:55.16\00:04:57.99 Still it's information about you that's going out there 00:04:58.03\00:05:01.30 into an environment 00:05:01.33\00:05:03.67 that takes your information and sells it to somebody else. 00:05:03.70\00:05:08.54 Some instances, big business, established organizations 00:05:08.57\00:05:12.44 that are corporate 00:05:12.47\00:05:13.81 and are considered very successful. 00:05:13.84\00:05:16.08 They're okay and you read the fine details 00:05:16.11\00:05:18.85 of the registration information 00:05:18.88\00:05:20.52 and they'll tell you that 00:05:20.55\00:05:21.98 we promise that your information 00:05:22.02\00:05:24.95 is safe in our database and we don't resell it. 00:05:24.99\00:05:28.26 Okay, the safety issues another and I'll address that later on. 00:05:28.29\00:05:31.49 But the key is this, 00:05:31.53\00:05:33.66 when you understand that in an information age, 00:05:33.70\00:05:38.07 your data is never really safe. 00:05:38.10\00:05:40.60 Many of these major organizations 00:05:40.64\00:05:42.30 that promise to keep your information safe 00:05:42.34\00:05:44.14 cannot really do so. 00:05:44.17\00:05:45.51 And then, of course, 00:05:45.54\00:05:46.88 those that ask for all this detailed information 00:05:46.91\00:05:49.14 are using that information to resell it. 00:05:49.18\00:05:51.01 It's all a money making industry. 00:05:51.05\00:05:53.15 Nothing is really safe and the more you do 00:05:53.18\00:05:55.98 to protect your information the better you are. 00:05:56.02\00:05:58.32 Therefore, we wanna talk today about consumer privacy, 00:05:58.35\00:06:03.39 consumer privacy and what you need to do. 00:06:03.43\00:06:06.70 For example, what I would recommend 00:06:06.73\00:06:08.63 that you do in reference to the acquisition of a laptop, 00:06:08.66\00:06:11.90 for example, is take your receipt, 00:06:11.93\00:06:14.34 staple it to the registration card, 00:06:14.37\00:06:16.17 and put it in a file. 00:06:16.20\00:06:17.54 You don't need to share information. 00:06:17.57\00:06:19.07 If you do choose to share information 00:06:19.11\00:06:21.28 just share your name, 00:06:21.31\00:06:23.11 your phone number and the registration number 00:06:23.14\00:06:26.21 of what you have purchased, the serial number. 00:06:26.25\00:06:28.95 Don't give out too much. 00:06:28.98\00:06:31.62 It's not necessary, and in the case 00:06:31.65\00:06:33.72 that I used for this water heater, 00:06:33.76\00:06:35.22 I just stapled the receipt 00:06:35.26\00:06:38.79 to the registration card and filed it. 00:06:38.83\00:06:40.96 If something goes wrong within allotted time frame, 00:06:41.00\00:06:44.07 I have the receipt that tells me 00:06:44.10\00:06:46.84 I bought it at this time, 00:06:46.87\00:06:48.20 this is the serial number, 00:06:48.24\00:06:49.57 here's where I bought it from, 00:06:49.60\00:06:50.94 and it gives the date when it was purchased 00:06:50.97\00:06:52.31 so I know it's within the warranty timeframe, 00:06:52.34\00:06:55.01 and then I can go make the call 00:06:55.04\00:06:56.85 to address any specific problematic issues 00:06:56.88\00:06:59.48 that I may have with the water heater. 00:06:59.51\00:07:02.05 But guess what, I bought it for a while now, 00:07:02.08\00:07:04.49 it hasn't given me any of the problems, 00:07:04.52\00:07:05.99 and typically if you're going to see any kind of troubles 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.76 within a piece of equipment or product that you buy, 00:07:08.79\00:07:12.16 you're going to pretty much see it early on. 00:07:12.19\00:07:14.33 I have never been one 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.67 to jump in to the extended warranties 00:07:16.70\00:07:19.40 and pay another $149, 00:07:19.43\00:07:21.44 and we can provide you a whole new piece of equipment 00:07:21.47\00:07:25.37 and just swap in and out. 00:07:25.41\00:07:27.01 I don't do it because it's additional funds 00:07:27.04\00:07:29.11 that you have to pay out, your written complaints 00:08:11.62\00:08:13.32 about a billing error? 00:08:13.36\00:08:15.22 Your credit card, your information. 00:08:15.26\00:08:18.09 Is it 30 days? 00:08:18.13\00:08:19.66 Is it 60 days? 00:08:19.69\00:08:21.20 Is it 90 days? Is it 120 days? 00:08:21.23\00:08:23.20 How long does one have? 00:08:23.23\00:08:24.80 Well, the answer is actually, A, 30 days. 00:08:24.83\00:08:27.00 The creditor has 30 days 00:08:27.04\00:08:29.34 to acknowledge your complaint in writing 00:08:29.37\00:08:32.24 within 30 days of receiving it 00:08:32.27\00:08:34.88 unless the problem has already been resolved 00:08:34.91\00:08:37.75 the creditor must resolve 00:08:37.78\00:08:40.02 that dispute within at least 2 billing cycles 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.18 or at max 90 days. 00:08:42.22\00:08:45.15 Things you need to know, so if you have a concern, 00:08:45.19\00:08:47.79 you know who you need to get in touch with 00:08:47.82\00:08:49.86 and you know that they have a certain timeframe 00:08:49.89\00:08:52.13 to resolve the billing 00:08:52.16\00:08:53.63 and credit error on your report. 00:08:53.66\00:08:55.70 Question two, 00:08:55.73\00:08:57.40 negative financial information 00:09:16.02\00:09:17.62 can stay on your report for 7 years. 00:09:17.65\00:09:19.72 Bankruptcies remain on your report 00:09:19.75\00:09:21.56 for approximately 10 years. 00:09:21.59\00:09:23.32 Now it's essential to know this 00:09:23.36\00:09:24.69 because as I mentioned accurate negative information 00:09:24.73\00:09:27.43 if it's not accurate 00:09:27.46\00:09:29.23 as we're getting into consumer privacy 00:09:29.26\00:09:31.10 and moving into another area 00:09:31.13\00:09:33.13 about ID theft and fraud things, 00:09:33.17\00:09:35.24 you need to do to protect yourself 00:09:35.27\00:09:37.37 and if you are caught 00:09:37.41\00:09:40.18 as a victim of consumer fraud, 00:09:40.21\00:09:42.54 you know exactly the three steps 00:09:42.58\00:09:43.91 you need to take immediately 00:09:43.95\00:09:46.08 to handle the issue 00:09:46.11\00:09:47.48 and we'll offer some statistics from that perspective. 00:09:47.52\00:09:50.62 Privacy that involves the rights 00:09:50.65\00:09:52.82 of an individual in relation to the information 00:09:52.85\00:09:55.02 about them circulating around in society, 00:09:55.06\00:09:58.26 it's called, "Information Privacy." 00:09:58.29\00:10:01.70 Why privacy is an important issue? 00:10:01.73\00:10:03.80 Now in the information age there are several reasons, 00:10:03.83\00:10:06.13 computer systems store large amounts of data, 00:10:06.17\00:10:09.90 a lot of information about us 00:10:09.94\00:10:12.27 and our consumer activities. 00:10:12.31\00:10:13.88 Working in the automotive environment, 00:10:13.91\00:10:16.14 and helping with market research 00:10:16.18\00:10:18.65 is a key understanding from my perspective of 00:10:18.68\00:10:21.38 how much information companies want to know about you. 00:10:21.42\00:10:24.92 They want to know as much as they can 00:10:24.95\00:10:26.69 to make the right decisions, 00:10:26.72\00:10:28.52 and how they approach you 00:10:28.56\00:10:30.03 for the acquisition of their products, 00:10:30.06\00:10:32.13 their services, their goods, 00:10:32.16\00:10:33.80 so there's a lot of data that's out there. 00:10:33.83\00:10:37.00 Public and private organizations 00:10:37.03\00:10:38.70 can share computer files, 00:10:38.73\00:10:40.97 for example, the IRS can access financial data 00:10:41.00\00:10:45.27 about you from your work 00:10:45.31\00:10:47.58 or from your bank, excuse me, from your bank. 00:10:47.61\00:10:50.75 Computer data can travel 00:10:50.78\00:10:52.95 and change hands in seconds, in milliseconds. 00:10:52.98\00:10:57.75 It's important to realize that 00:10:57.79\00:10:59.95 because of these factors accurate data is paramount, 00:10:59.99\00:11:05.83 accurate data about you in the systems 00:11:05.86\00:11:09.56 of these organizations is critical. 00:11:09.60\00:11:12.57 Why is information privacy such a sensitive issue? 00:11:12.60\00:11:16.34 Why is it? 00:11:16.37\00:11:17.71 Because information is a valuable resource, 00:11:17.74\00:11:23.31 it's valuable, people pay for it, 00:11:23.35\00:11:25.31 they need it, they want it 00:11:25.35\00:11:27.25 because they want you to be a consumer 00:11:27.28\00:11:29.75 and they need to know they can talk to you. 00:11:29.78\00:11:33.32 The access to information in our society today 00:11:33.36\00:11:36.39 may have many benefits to consumers, 00:11:36.42\00:11:39.33 but it also poses a potential threat 00:11:39.36\00:11:42.63 to all of our privacy and personal information. 00:11:42.66\00:11:46.47 Now the types of public information 00:11:46.50\00:11:48.20 I'm gonna read a few of these for an example purpose. 00:11:48.24\00:11:53.88 Types of public information 00:11:53.91\00:11:55.24 that's out there ready for anyone to get is like, 00:11:55.28\00:11:57.45 for example, we did a census back in 2010. 00:11:57.48\00:12:00.22 Demographic information U.S. Census 00:12:00.25\00:12:02.75 about where you live, your age, your ethnicity, 00:12:02.78\00:12:06.99 information about you as an individual, 00:12:07.02\00:12:10.13 telephone directories, telephone numbers, 00:12:10.16\00:12:13.16 birth, marriage and divorce records 00:12:13.19\00:12:15.96 are public information, 00:12:16.00\00:12:17.83 you know voter registration information is public. 00:12:17.87\00:12:21.04 Did you know campaign contributions 00:12:21.07\00:12:22.74 where you give your money, is also public information? 00:12:22.77\00:12:26.24 Driver's license 00:12:26.27\00:12:27.61 and vehicle registration information is public. 00:12:27.64\00:12:30.61 Did you know your licenses and permits, 00:12:30.65\00:12:32.78 so if you go hunting and fishing 00:12:32.81\00:12:35.38 your gun registration or your fishing license, 00:12:35.42\00:12:37.39 and whatever the case may be is public information? 00:12:37.42\00:12:41.22 And other that's really important 00:12:41.26\00:12:43.93 is legal information 00:12:43.96\00:12:45.66 such as judgments, bankruptcies, 00:12:45.69\00:12:49.33 real estate titles, real estate titles etcetera. 00:12:49.36\00:12:54.30 Private databases, 00:12:54.34\00:12:55.67 things that should not be available 00:12:55.70\00:12:59.07 and only available to those people 00:12:59.11\00:13:00.88 that are approved in using it are also out there about you. 00:13:00.91\00:13:06.35 Digitally, the part of your digital mark on the internet 00:13:06.38\00:13:11.09 and as a part of your physical files, 00:13:11.12\00:13:13.56 database files that are out there 00:13:13.59\00:13:15.02 in public records, 00:13:15.06\00:13:16.39 those include your employment information, 00:13:16.42\00:13:19.29 your employment information shows upon your credit report, 00:13:19.33\00:13:23.03 it can also show up in other areas. 00:13:23.06\00:13:26.23 Credit reports as I mentioned also tax information 00:13:26.27\00:13:29.10 such as IRS and tax boards 00:13:29.14\00:13:31.41 based on how you pay your taxes, 00:13:31.44\00:13:33.94 criminal records is supposed to be private information, 00:13:33.98\00:13:37.41 social service records, welfare, 00:13:37.45\00:13:39.65 Medicare those type of things should be private, 00:13:39.68\00:13:41.85 and then, of course, 00:13:41.88\00:13:43.32 school records and medical records. 00:13:43.35\00:13:47.16 What I'd like to do now is ask 00:13:47.19\00:13:49.69 our area expert on credit, Jessica, 00:13:49.72\00:13:52.59 a couple of questions 00:13:52.63\00:13:53.96 and ask her to respond accordingly. 00:13:54.00\00:13:55.96 The first question I have is what methods can we use 00:13:56.00\00:13:58.83 to protect ourselves from fraud and ID theft? 00:13:58.87\00:14:02.17 Jessica, what are your thoughts? 00:14:02.20\00:14:04.64 Unfortunately the thieves 00:14:04.67\00:14:06.61 have already stolen our personal information, 00:14:06.64\00:14:09.71 so to protect ourselves 00:14:09.74\00:14:11.65 what I tell our clients and employees 00:14:11.68\00:14:14.65 that we educate is to shred 00:14:14.68\00:14:18.09 what information you have that's on paper, 00:14:18.12\00:14:20.66 be very careful who you give your personal information to, 00:14:20.69\00:14:25.26 and there are multiple 00:14:25.29\00:14:27.36 different types of insurance policies out there 00:14:27.40\00:14:30.27 that people can purchase now 00:14:30.30\00:14:31.73 in order to help them with their fraud situations. 00:14:31.77\00:14:37.74 Interesting her response. 00:14:37.77\00:14:39.81 Your information is important, it's valuable, 00:14:39.84\00:14:43.28 people want it 00:14:43.31\00:14:44.65 and what she's telling us is that 00:14:44.68\00:14:46.31 it's no longer really safe. 00:14:46.35\00:14:48.85 ID thieves are out there, they're looking, 00:14:48.88\00:14:51.25 they're looking for someone that's not really aware of 00:14:51.29\00:14:54.62 what's happening in their lives or in their surroundings, 00:14:54.66\00:14:57.19 and they're stealing identities 00:14:57.23\00:14:58.96 and using them for their own specific purposes. 00:14:58.99\00:15:02.03 It's key that we look at how we protect our data, 00:15:02.06\00:15:05.57 and as I told you in the story before 00:15:05.60\00:15:07.60 that your information is what people want, 00:15:07.64\00:15:10.21 and they take that consumer information 00:15:10.24\00:15:12.01 and resell it and use it in many different forms. 00:15:12.04\00:15:14.64 In many, the majority of the situations, 00:15:14.68\00:15:16.98 its use for the right purposes 00:15:17.01\00:15:18.81 if you are a manufacturer in an organization. 00:15:18.85\00:15:22.05 But in a growing number of cases 00:15:22.08\00:15:25.05 people are losing their IDs 00:15:25.09\00:15:26.92 and it's creating a major, major concern with families, 00:15:26.96\00:15:31.99 and the lives that are put into disarray 00:15:32.03\00:15:34.83 by having to recoup and finding out 00:15:34.86\00:15:36.87 what's going on in reference to their lives, 00:15:36.90\00:15:39.23 and how many new credit cards are out there in their names, 00:15:39.27\00:15:42.14 and what's going on? 00:15:42.17\00:15:43.74 I'd like to go back to Jessica though for a moment 00:15:43.77\00:15:45.97 and ask her, well, 00:15:46.01\00:15:47.34 if people are already out there stealing our information, 00:15:47.38\00:15:50.15 what is it that we can do, Jessica, 00:15:50.18\00:15:53.15 to make our lives a little bit more safe?
