The first of September, 1939 marked the beginning of 00:00:24.02\00:00:28.29 World War II, a war that lasted for six long and heart-wrenching 00:00:28.32\00:00:34.30 years. It was a time in history that witnessed more carnage, 00:00:34.33\00:00:38.83 loss of lives, property, and land damage 00:00:38.87\00:00:41.64 than any other war previously. 00:00:41.67\00:00:44.01 Families were torn apart by the fighting, guns and bombs. 00:00:44.04\00:00:48.28 many children lost their fathers, wives lost husbands, 00:00:48.31\00:00:52.41 and parents lost their sons. 00:00:52.45\00:00:54.85 A devastating figure from 50 to 70 million people are 00:00:54.88\00:01:00.99 estimated to have died in this war. 00:01:01.02\00:01:02.99 The survival rate was shocking and inhumane, 00:01:03.02\00:01:06.39 sadly, it's also estimated that over 50% of all deaths 00:01:06.43\00:01:11.57 during this time were innocent civilians. 00:01:11.60\00:01:14.77 The climax of World War II would ultimately occur due to 00:01:14.80\00:01:20.01 the invention and use of the lethal atomic bomb. 00:01:20.04\00:01:23.21 Two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of 00:01:23.24\00:01:26.68 Hiroshima and Nagasaki causing about a quarter of a million 00:01:26.72\00:01:31.35 deaths and casualties. 00:01:31.39\00:01:32.79 It was only then that Japan finally surrendered in 1945 00:01:32.82\00:01:38.46 and the war came to an end. 00:01:38.49\00:01:40.60 But how did a war started by Germany and Europe end with 00:01:40.63\00:01:46.94 the United States of America bombing Japan in the Pacific? 00:01:46.97\00:01:50.64 Well, a year into the war in 1940, Japan signed the 00:01:50.67\00:01:56.61 Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy is becoming the third 00:01:56.64\00:02:00.62 country in the alliance known as the axis. 00:02:00.65\00:02:05.15 Soon after this, several countries, including America 00:02:05.19\00:02:09.39 withdrew economic support from Japan. 00:02:09.42\00:02:12.56 With a shortage of oil and other natural resources 00:02:12.59\00:02:16.80 Japan decided to aggressively move its military to 00:02:16.83\00:02:21.07 Southeast Asia in order to forcibly obtain more vital 00:02:21.10\00:02:25.17 resources so that they could continue to supply their army 00:02:25.21\00:02:28.94 and their war effort. 00:02:28.98\00:02:30.31 Japan began two years of successful military advances 00:02:30.35\00:02:35.65 in Asia and the South Pacific which started with a surprise 00:02:35.68\00:02:39.82 air attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the 7th of December 00:02:39.85\00:02:44.23 1941. This severely impacted the American fleet and drew the U.S. 00:02:44.26\00:02:50.20 into the war. 00:02:50.23\00:02:51.57 Japan then wasted no time in proceeding to conquer Guam, 00:02:51.60\00:02:56.71 Wake Island, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaya, 00:02:56.74\00:03:01.44 Singapore and Burma. 00:03:01.48\00:03:03.31 Imperial Japan seemed unstoppable, their troops 00:03:03.35\00:03:08.65 were on the move, and it appeared that they would conquer 00:03:08.68\00:03:11.99 all of Asia and the South Pacific. 00:03:12.02\00:03:13.86 Japan's success and its reputation for being aggressive 00:03:13.89\00:03:19.03 and ruthless on the battle- field appeared ominous 00:03:19.06\00:03:22.70 for the next country and its sights New Guinea 00:03:22.73\00:03:25.53 and it would have been conquered just as quickly as Guam and 00:03:25.57\00:03:29.07 the Philippines, if it wasn't for the Australian, American, 00:03:29.10\00:03:32.44 and local New Guinea soldiers and civilians fighting to 00:03:32.47\00:03:37.38 protect this land from invasion. 00:03:37.41\00:03:39.21 On the 8th of March 1942, the Japanese landed in 00:03:39.25\00:03:44.99 what was then known as New Guinea, now known as 00:03:45.02\00:03:48.12 Papua New Guinea and west Papua, which is now part of 00:03:48.16\00:03:51.89 Indonesia. This was one of the toughest and longest battles 00:03:51.93\00:03:56.40 of World War II due to the mountainous terrain, isolation, 00:03:56.43\00:04:01.44 dense jungle, intense heat, and many tropical diseases. 00:04:01.47\00:04:05.94 The Australian and American armies were filled with soldiers 00:04:05.97\00:04:10.68 loyal, strong, and courageous, and one such soldier was 00:04:10.71\00:04:15.78 Corporal Leslie Charles Allen, he was larger than life 00:04:15.82\00:04:20.16 and is best known for his heroic actions during the battle at 00:04:20.19\00:04:24.99 Mt. Tambu, the highest point on the track that ran between 00:04:25.03\00:04:29.50 Salamaua and Mubo in Southeastern New Guinea. 00:04:29.53\00:04:33.47 During this fierce battle, Leslie Allen, nicknamed Bull 00:04:33.50\00:04:39.37 Allen because of his size and strength displayed unbelievable 00:04:39.41\00:04:44.08 courage and bravery amidst intense pressure and danger. 00:04:44.11\00:04:48.12 Bull Allen's story, his endeavors, his tough childhood, 00:04:48.15\00:04:52.89 and the leader and man he became is nothing short of 00:04:52.92\00:04:57.26 inspirational. 00:04:57.29\00:04:58.73 Join me, Gary Kent as we follow in the footsteps of 00:04:58.76\00:05:03.30 Leslie Bull Allen through the mud and misery of the 00:05:03.33\00:05:06.90 New Guinea Campaign. 00:05:06.94\00:05:08.27 His story will encourage you and inspire you. 00:05:08.30\00:05:12.47 The town of Ballarat is located in the central highlands 00:05:32.06\00:05:35.36 of Victoria, Australia. 00:05:35.40\00:05:37.93 The Ballarat region was first occupied by the Australian 00:05:37.97\00:05:41.50 indigenous Wadawurrung people, but it wasn't until 00:05:41.54\00:05:45.54 August of 1851 that significant growth and settlement 00:05:45.57\00:05:50.18 in the area occurred to the discovery of Gold by 00:05:50.21\00:05:53.92 Thomas Hiscock, this led to the start of what is Now known 00:05:53.95\00:05:58.65 as the Victorian Gold Rush. 00:05:58.69\00:06:00.76 Within three months of the initial discovery, 00:06:00.79\00:06:03.83 several deep mining leads were open and shanty towns sprang up. 00:06:03.86\00:06:08.66 At its peak in 1858, there were a staggering 60,000 people 00:06:08.70\00:06:15.20 living in Ballarat, however, once the transient gold mining 00:06:15.24\00:06:19.81 population moved onto other gold diggings, 00:06:19.84\00:06:23.14 the tents and shacks of those 23,000 that remained 00:06:23.18\00:06:27.68 gradually transformed into more solid stone and brick 00:06:27.72\00:06:32.59 structures. The makeshift mining town turned into an established 00:06:32.62\00:06:36.56 township by 1859. 00:06:36.59\00:06:38.46 Today, Ballarat has a population of about 120,000, making it 00:06:38.49\00:06:46.94 the third largest city in the state of Victoria. 00:06:46.97\00:06:49.60 The history of this gold rush era is still highly important 00:06:49.64\00:06:54.61 to the people of Ballarat and to this day there is a 00:06:54.64\00:06:57.98 tourist attraction called Sovereign Hill. 00:06:58.01\00:07:01.02 This is a place where visitors stood back in time 00:07:01.05\00:07:04.99 and experience the life and pulse of the Gold Rush era. 00:07:05.02\00:07:09.56 and learned what this important period around the 1850s meant 00:07:09.59\00:07:14.40 for the future of the town. 00:07:14.43\00:07:16.16 But there is something else that is significant about 00:07:16.20\00:07:20.17 Ballarat, which has brought us here today. 00:07:20.20\00:07:22.77 This is the hometown of the war hero Leslie Bull Charles Allen. 00:07:22.80\00:07:28.81 who was born here in 1918, although he was raised here. 00:07:28.84\00:07:34.02 He didn't have a typical upbringing, 00:07:34.05\00:07:36.38 you see, Bull and his sister Violet were abandoned 00:07:36.42\00:07:40.52 as children and raised in a local orphanage in their 00:07:40.56\00:07:44.63 early years of life were very difficult. 00:07:44.66\00:07:47.46 He had a cruel father, sort of thing and in the end of time 00:07:47.50\00:07:52.27 him and his sister ended up in the Ballarat Orphanage 00:07:52.30\00:07:57.57 after he'd been in the orphanage about 11 years old 00:07:57.61\00:08:01.48 he'd just thought he would go out and work, 00:08:01.51\00:08:03.38 he didn't have a very good education at all. 00:08:03.41\00:08:06.48 He went out to work on the farms on the western district 00:08:06.51\00:08:10.89 just doing odd jobs, working with horses from picking up 00:08:10.92\00:08:15.32 a few off skills on the way and he did that right up until 00:08:15.36\00:08:19.89 he probably enlisted in the military. 00:08:19.93\00:08:23.20 He volunteered to join the army when the II world War 00:08:23.23\00:08:26.84 broke out at the age of 21. He was used to working 00:08:26.87\00:08:30.84 hard and had grown into a powerfully built and strong man. 00:08:30.87\00:08:34.54 His physique, coupled with his boisterous personality 00:08:34.58\00:08:39.45 soon mean that Bull would become one of the most popular 00:08:39.48\00:08:43.89 recognizable characters in his battalion. 00:08:43.92\00:08:46.86 In 1940, Bull Allen was assigned to the 2nd Australian 00:08:46.89\00:08:52.09 Imperial Force, it was not long before he was posted as 00:08:52.13\00:08:56.60 reinforcement for the 2/5th Australian Infantry 00:08:56.63\00:09:00.37 Battalion of the 17th Brigade. 00:09:00.40\00:09:02.94 Bull Allen decided to be a medic as he wants to save life 00:09:02.97\00:09:08.18 rather than take it. 00:09:08.21\00:09:09.58 His first destination was Palestine in the Middle East 00:09:09.61\00:09:15.72 where he would begin his training as a stretcher bearer 00:09:15.75\00:09:19.59 for The Dawn Company. 00:09:19.62\00:09:21.32 It was in Palestine that Leslie Allen soon earned the nickname 00:09:21.36\00:09:26.56 Bull Allen. While playing some football during some down time 00:09:26.59\00:09:30.70 Bull established his reputation as a rugged individual 00:09:31.13\00:09:34.50 who could powerfully charge straight ahead through 00:09:34.54\00:09:37.87 defenders. 00:09:37.91\00:09:39.51 His teammates considered he ran like a bull and 00:09:39.54\00:09:42.81 the name stuck. What his fellow soldiers didn't know at the time 00:09:42.84\00:09:47.22 was that Bull would carry that same spirit 00:09:47.25\00:09:51.15 onto the battlefield, charging through bullets and enemy lines 00:09:51.19\00:09:55.22 in order to save the lives of his comrades and allies. 00:09:55.26\00:09:59.76 These acts of bravery made him a decorated war hero. 00:09:59.79\00:10:04.27 Bull went on to serve in the Middle East and North Africa 00:10:04.30\00:10:08.60 including battles in Libya and Syria, and during this time 00:10:08.64\00:10:13.27 his reputation as Bull Allen didn't waver. 00:10:13.31\00:10:16.98 He had immense courage under fire and was persistent in 00:10:17.01\00:10:21.38 retrieving injured soldiers during battles. 00:10:21.42\00:10:24.45 He fearlessly risked his life to help fallen comrades 00:10:24.49\00:10:30.79 His fellow Australian troops affectionately referred to 00:10:30.83\00:10:37.07 Les Allen as Al Bull, the one man army. 00:10:37.10\00:10:41.37 In 1943, after serving in the Middle East, the 2/5th 00:10:41.40\00:10:46.54 Australian Infantry Battalion was sent to defensive operations 00:10:46.57\00:10:51.05 in the jungles of New Guinea against the Japanese. 00:10:51.08\00:10:54.22 This is where Bull Allen's heroism came to the forefront 00:10:54.25\00:10:59.29 as part of the Wild Salamaua Campaign Bull served bravely 00:10:59.32\00:11:04.86 as a stretcher bearer. On the mountain tracks his strength 00:11:04.89\00:11:09.56 stamina, and devotion to his comrades were invaluable. 00:11:09.60\00:11:13.90 During a battle at Chrystal Creek on the 7th of February 00:11:13.94\00:11:18.27 1943, a platoon was pinned down in the open under intense 00:11:18.31\00:11:24.68 Japanese machine gun fire. 00:11:24.71\00:11:26.28 Three men were wounded and two were killed, Bull Allen 00:11:26.31\00:11:31.65 rushed out in the face of this machine gun fire 00:11:31.69\00:11:34.19 pushing one soldier, Corporal Kelley out of danger 00:11:34.22\00:11:37.93 over a small bank. Then hoisted him over his shoulder 00:11:37.96\00:11:41.66 and carried him up a hill to safety. 00:11:41.70\00:11:44.43 During this daring rescue, Bull Allen received a bullet through 00:11:44.47\00:11:49.34 the haversack he was carrying on his back, 00:11:49.37\00:11:51.44 the haversack saved his life. 00:11:51.47\00:11:54.34 But this close shave with death didn't slow him down, 00:11:54.38\00:11:58.55 Bull Allen relentlessly went out and cared many of these fallen 00:11:58.58\00:12:03.28 comrades during intense fire from the Japanese forces. 00:12:03.32\00:12:06.86 The following day, the 18th Battalion was surrounded 00:12:06.89\00:12:10.73 and pinned down by Japanese snipers, one soldier was killed 00:12:10.76\00:12:15.33 and two were wounded. 00:12:15.36\00:12:17.27 Bull Allen made three separate trips to recover them, 00:12:17.30\00:12:21.57 Bull Allen's efforts were noticed and he was awarded the 00:12:21.60\00:12:26.88 Military Medal from the Australian Army for outstanding 00:12:26.91\00:12:31.18 bravery and his actions on the battlefield. 00:12:31.21\00:12:33.62 A section on the citation reads 00:12:33.65\00:12:36.65 Even with all the carnage and brutality that Bull Allen 00:12:46.59\00:12:52.03 had experienced, no one knew that the worst was yet to come. 00:12:52.07\00:12:56.47 Just a few months later, Bull Allen would arrive at his 00:12:56.50\00:13:01.04 most significant battle, this battle was the one that 00:13:01.08\00:13:04.78 he is remembered for above all others, not only were 00:13:04.81\00:13:09.08 his actions Signiant but at the right moment. 00:13:09.12\00:13:12.22 His picture was taken, there is a famous image of an 00:13:12.29\00:13:17.13 Australian soldier carrying a wounded comrade across 00:13:17.16\00:13:20.40 his shoulder, it's a photo that is recognizable to 00:13:20.43\00:13:24.10 many Australians and symbolizes incredible dedication to duty 00:13:24.13\00:13:29.64 and mateship. 00:13:29.67\00:13:31.01 This picture, which was later modeled in a sculpture 00:13:31.04\00:13:34.94 is proudly displayed at the prestigious Australian War 00:13:34.98\00:13:38.75 Memorial in Canberra to this day. 00:13:38.78\00:13:41.12 This image is none other than Bull Allen, who had run into 00:13:41.15\00:13:46.72 intense enemy fire to save American wounded soldiers 00:13:46.76\00:13:50.73 at the Battle of Mount Tambu. 00:13:50.76\00:13:52.83 The figure of Bull Allen carrying the wounded to safety 00:13:52.86\00:13:57.10 was unmistakable because he preferred to carry them 00:13:57.13\00:14:01.34 around his ample shoulders in the fireman's grip 00:14:01.37\00:14:04.21 rather than use a stretcher which required two men, 00:14:04.24\00:14:07.88 but this photo only captured one of the men he rescued. 00:14:07.91\00:14:12.88 One, two, three, four, he kept going back out, 00:14:12.91\00:14:17.95 five, six, seven, eight, the odds were not in Bulls' favor 00:14:17.99\00:14:22.59 to come back at all, but he did, time and time again. 00:14:22.62\00:14:27.40 Even though there were snipers, machine guns and mortar bombs 00:14:27.43\00:14:32.40 exploding and buzzing around them constantly, 00:14:32.43\00:14:35.47 this didn't stop Bull Allen from continually going back out 00:14:35.50\00:14:40.04 to rescue wounded and unconscious soldiers 00:14:40.08\00:14:42.91 even though he was wounded himself and two other medics 00:14:42.94\00:14:47.45 had been killed in trying to rescue people. 00:14:47.48\00:14:50.19 Bull Allen still went out and charge through the bullets 00:14:50.22\00:14:54.49 saving his American comrades against all odds. 00:14:54.52\00:14:58.66 His story and David Cranage shares... 00:14:58.69\00:15:02.30 David Cranage sums up the entire events with 00:15:23.15\00:15:27.32 three powerful words... 00:15:27.36\00:15:29.46 The number of rescued soldiers continued to rise, nine, ten, 00:15:33.80\00:15:39.03 eleven, twelve, at least a dozen American men were rescued 00:15:39.07\00:15:44.44 that day, the 30th of July, 1943 by an Australian soldier. 00:15:44.47\00:15:49.74 More than a dozen men were now able to go on and live 00:15:49.78\00:15:53.95 to now have the hope of going home to see their 00:15:53.98\00:15:57.39 families again, to face another day, all due to the bravery 00:15:57.42\00:16:02.56 of one man, Bull Allen. 00:16:02.59\00:16:05.39 When he was put under pressure he probably didn't show a lot 00:16:05.43\00:16:08.00 of sign of fear on anything like that, even though there 00:16:08.03\00:16:12.00 were things happening around him, he was able to overcome all 00:16:12.03\00:16:15.54 that and went and go and did the job as what he was trying to do 00:16:15.57\00:16:19.84 as a stretcher bearer, late? when he was under fire, and he 00:16:19.87\00:16:22.71 was forced them out of every shelter, and while he's probably 00:16:22.74\00:16:26.41 treating them first, sort of thing and assessing the 00:16:26.45\00:16:28.95 casualties and what they have to do and then he'd carry them 00:16:28.98\00:16:32.09 out to safety sort of thing and going back out again. 00:16:32.12\00:16:35.16 In the official statement that says he did it 12 times, but 00:16:35.19\00:16:39.89 over his paper cuttings, he'd say that he did it 00:16:39.93\00:16:43.10 seven, eight times so no one really knows 00:16:43.13\00:16:45.70 exactly what the strength of it was. 00:16:45.73\00:16:48.34 These are dad's medals, the campaign medal is there, 00:16:48.70\00:16:53.17 that's the Military Medal, and that was awarded for bravery 00:16:53.21\00:16:58.08 at Crystal Creek, this is the American Silver Star 00:16:58.11\00:17:01.22 which was awarded to him for bravery at Mt. Tambu' s 00:17:01.25\00:17:05.69 for saving the Americans. 00:17:05.72\00:17:07.16 Bull was awarded the Prestigious United States Silver Star 00:17:07.19\00:17:11.86 one of America's highest military honors for a 00:17:11.89\00:17:15.43 non-American honoring Bull's bravery and services to America 00:17:15.46\00:17:21.17 in the Allied Corps. 00:17:21.20\00:17:22.77 Many people extended their congratulations to him 00:17:22.80\00:17:26.61 including the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt 00:17:26.64\00:17:30.25 Eleanor Roosevelt. 00:17:30.28\00:17:32.21 Receiving this medal in early 1945 was a high point for 00:17:32.25\00:17:37.22 Bull Allen, who had been struggling immensely with 00:17:37.25\00:17:40.82 processing all the sadness of war that he had encountered 00:17:40.86\00:17:44.86 in the previous years. 00:17:44.89\00:17:46.36 Cracks started to show in Bull Allen's mental health 00:17:46.39\00:17:50.67 even as early as in his first campaign in Libya. 00:17:50.70\00:17:54.30 He'd been hospitalized with a condition they called 00:17:54.34\00:17:57.64 anxiety neurosis, now it's a broad term that was first coined 00:17:57.67\00:18:03.71 by Sigmund Freud, and has led to deeper research 00:18:03.75\00:18:07.68 into all anxiety disorders. 00:18:07.72\00:18:09.82 Overall, it's a condition where someone may experience an 00:18:09.85\00:18:15.16 excessive ongoing and intense fear about ordinary daily 00:18:15.19\00:18:20.03 situations. Yet, after his diagnosis Bull Allen was 00:18:20.06\00:18:25.70 soon discharged and went on to serve in his next battle 00:18:25.73\00:18:29.30 in Syria and eventually in New Guinea. 00:18:29.34\00:18:32.04 These years of front-line battles took a large toll 00:18:32.07\00:18:36.81 on Bull, in 1944, Bull Allen and his battalion was sent back 00:18:36.85\00:18:42.62 to Queensland, Australia, to continue their training, 00:18:42.65\00:18:45.99 where would they be sent next? 00:18:46.02\00:18:48.12 Would they come home safely? from their next deployment? 00:18:48.36\00:18:52.53 Unfortunately, Bull Allen would never find out the answers 00:18:52.56\00:18:57.73 to these questions. 00:18:57.77\00:18:59.10 Although Bull never showed fear in front of his fellow 00:18:59.13\00:19:02.74 soldiers, his war service undoubtedly affected him, 00:19:02.77\00:19:06.74 in late 1944, emotions welled up inside Bull Allen, 00:19:06.78\00:19:11.58 some say he was suffering from shell-shock, today it's called 00:19:11.61\00:19:16.38 post-traumatic stress disorder. 00:19:16.42\00:19:18.72 Anger, fear, anxiety, resentment, a myriad of feelings 00:19:18.75\00:19:24.49 that were circulating through his heart and mind. 00:19:24.53\00:19:27.16 One day those feelings culminated into an outburst of 00:19:27.20\00:19:33.13 emotions and in a moment of high anxiety he struck an officer 00:19:33.17\00:19:37.64 and was demoted from Corporal back to Private. 00:19:37.67\00:19:41.34 Consequently, Bull Allen's mental health continued to 00:19:41.38\00:19:46.38 deteriorate, he was again assessed and diagnosed this time 00:19:46.41\00:19:51.52 with constitutional tempermental instability and anxiety 00:19:51.55\00:19:58.16 symptoms. As well as this, Bull also suffered with physical 00:19:58.19\00:20:03.93 ailments through several bouts of malaria too. 00:20:03.97\00:20:06.94 Soon after these events, Bull Allen was deemed medically unfit 00:20:06.97\00:20:12.34 for service and was discharged from the military. 00:20:12.37\00:20:15.98 His military career was over and the life he had come to know 00:20:16.01\00:20:20.28 over the last several years had now ended. 00:20:20.32\00:20:23.52 After all of the adrenaline of fighting ceased after all of the 00:20:23.55\00:20:28.86 accolades and congratulations go silent, what is left? 00:20:28.89\00:20:33.46 Just your thoughts, your memories, and these were 00:20:33.50\00:20:38.33 hard to live with for Bull Allen he had witnessed a lot of 00:20:38.37\00:20:42.17 devastation, death, and destruction through his 00:20:42.20\00:20:45.47 war experiences, from friends dying before his very eyes 00:20:45.51\00:20:49.74 to bullets and bombs coming within centimeters 00:20:49.78\00:20:53.62 of taking his own life. 00:20:53.65\00:20:55.82 His body had been forced into hyperdrive for hours on end. 00:20:55.88\00:21:00.89 every loud crash of a frying pan, or crack from a firework 00:21:00.96\00:21:05.39 would bring back a flood of sickening memories. 00:21:05.43\00:21:08.66 They clouded his mind even when he was back at home 00:21:08.70\00:21:12.43 where he could enjoy safety and freedom, 00:21:12.47\00:21:15.10 he found it very difficult. 00:21:15.14\00:21:19.11 So, whatever happened to Bull Allen, once he had 00:21:19.14\00:21:23.75 left the military? Well in 1949 Bull married his sweetheart 00:21:23.78\00:21:29.25 Jane Elizabeth Floyd, who had served in the army as a nurse. 00:21:29.28\00:21:33.19 Just before the wedding, he received a surprise in a post 00:21:33.22\00:21:38.09 a letter from Eleanor Roosevelt, the letter read; 00:21:38.13\00:21:42.70 Dear Mr. Allen, I've just heard that you were 00:21:42.73\00:21:46.60 going to be married on April 25, and I send you my 00:21:46.63\00:21:50.24 congratulations and best wishes. 00:21:50.27\00:21:52.81 Very Sincerely Yours, Eleanor Roosevelt 00:21:52.84\00:21:56.85 The letter was personally signed. 00:21:56.88\00:22:00.52 Bull Allen's marriage to Jean brought encouragement, 00:22:00.55\00:22:05.15 love and support, it was good to have someone by his side 00:22:05.19\00:22:08.66 who had an understanding of the things he had gone through. 00:22:08.72\00:22:12.16 However, she would need to have patience and kindness 00:22:12.19\00:22:16.10 through Bull's post-traumatic Episodes which still occurred 00:22:16.13\00:22:20.44 from time to time. 00:22:20.47\00:22:21.80 He would of experienced seeing his own mates being shot 00:22:21.84\00:22:26.11 or killed or wounded, it would have to have an impact 00:22:26.14\00:22:29.58 on your life. Mom and dad they stayed together and 00:22:29.61\00:22:32.41 they worked together, and they'd raise a family and 00:22:32.45\00:22:34.75 after what he went through, I think it was one of his 00:22:34.78\00:22:38.15 best friends. 00:22:38.19\00:22:39.75 One of the worst occasions that affected Bull 00:22:39.79\00:22:42.39 was when he lost his ability to speak for a six-month period. 00:22:42.42\00:22:46.36 Imagine the struggle of silence, this must have been such a 00:22:46.39\00:22:51.37 dark place for Bull, to not be able to utter a word, 00:22:51.40\00:22:55.40 the turmoil and distress in someone's heart 00:22:55.44\00:22:59.41 after experiencing deep and intense trauma is hard to 00:22:59.44\00:23:03.91 fathom for those who never experienced such devastation 00:23:03.95\00:23:08.12 and heartache, but Jean continued to love Bull 00:23:08.15\00:23:12.32 through these times. 00:23:12.35\00:23:13.76 And who knows the troubles that Jean also needed to work through 00:23:13.79\00:23:17.69 with the support of Bull? 00:23:17.73\00:23:19.43 They celebrated the birth of three healthy sons and a 00:23:19.46\00:23:23.93 beautiful daughter together and they raised them in 00:23:23.97\00:23:27.47 Bull Allen's hometown of Ballarat. 00:23:27.50\00:23:29.74 Bull Allen worked as a laborer initially, but soon began work 00:23:29.77\00:23:34.88 in Ballarat Base Hospital as a theater attendant. 00:23:34.91\00:23:38.65 The family lived on the outskirts Ballarat Township 00:23:38.68\00:23:42.48 so that they could own a small acreage of land. 00:23:42.52\00:23:45.85 Bull loved being outside and had enough land where 00:23:45.89\00:23:49.82 they could raise livestock and break-in horses. 00:23:49.86\00:23:53.09 The work of breaking-in and stubborn often abandoned horses 00:23:53.13\00:23:57.57 was probably very meaningful to Bull, could he himself 00:23:57.60\00:24:01.70 relate to these horses?
