Moses, born a slave but destined to rule over Egypt's 00:00:22.92\00:00:28.49 Empire. Rescued from the river, adopted by a princess 00:00:28.52\00:00:33.73 and raised to be Pharaoh, instead leads a nation of slaves 00:00:33.76\00:00:40.20 to freedom and changes the world. 00:00:40.24\00:00:44.47 Moses, a hero for our time. 00:00:44.51\00:00:51.31 It was a royal death decree and it was devastating 00:00:51.35\00:00:58.32 when they heard of Pharaoh's command to throw their 00:00:58.35\00:01:03.73 newborn sons into the Nile River, the pain and grief 00:01:03.76\00:01:07.70 passed over the oppressed Hebrew slaves 00:01:07.73\00:01:10.17 like a bitter flood. 00:01:10.20\00:01:12.40 They already suffered from brutality and this new tragedy 00:01:12.43\00:01:17.31 was more than they could bear. 00:01:17.34\00:01:19.41 The Hebrews or Israelites hadn't always been enslaved 00:01:19.44\00:01:24.68 they were the descendants of Jacob and his sons 00:01:24.71\00:01:27.88 including Joseph, the slave who became Prime Minister 00:01:27.92\00:01:31.39 of Egypt and saved the kingdom from famine. 00:01:31.42\00:01:34.49 In a show of gratitude for Joseph's services to the nation 00:01:34.52\00:01:39.13 Pharaoh had granted his family land and permanent residence 00:01:39.16\00:01:43.83 status in Egypt. 00:01:43.87\00:01:45.20 But after the death of Joseph, a new Pharaoh ascended 00:01:45.23\00:01:49.74 to the Egyptian throne, he didn't know Joseph 00:01:49.77\00:01:53.01 and was unwilling to acknowledge the service Joseph had rendered 00:01:53.04\00:01:57.38 to the nation, most likely because Joseph was a 00:01:57.41\00:02:00.98 Habura, a term used by Egyptians to describe outsiders. 00:02:01.02\00:02:06.02 including Canaanites and others. 00:02:06.05\00:02:08.19 When this new Pharaoh looked around at his kingdom 00:02:08.22\00:02:11.83 and saw the property and prosperity of the Hebrews 00:02:11.86\00:02:15.10 and their vast numbers, he realized that they could pose 00:02:15.13\00:02:19.40 this serious threat to national security and the future of 00:02:19.43\00:02:23.44 Egypt. In an attempt to manage the threat, Pharaoh forced the 00:02:23.47\00:02:28.44 Hebrews into slavery. Almost overnight the stable 00:02:28.48\00:02:33.11 prosperous lives of the Hebrews turned into a living nightmare. 00:02:33.15\00:02:37.39 Punctuated with whippings and hard labor, 00:02:37.42\00:02:40.42 the Hebrews longed for freedom but freedom seemed 00:02:40.46\00:02:45.46 like an unattainable dream too far off on the horizon 00:02:45.49\00:02:49.33 to be grasped. 00:02:49.36\00:02:50.83 Then, just when they thought their lives couldn't get 00:02:50.87\00:02:53.87 any worse Pharaoh passed an inhuman decree, 00:02:53.90\00:02:57.97 a Death Decree. At Pharaoh's command every newborn Hebrew 00:02:58.01\00:03:03.55 boy was to be thrown into the Nile River. 00:03:03.58\00:03:06.55 If slavery wouldn't contain or destroy them, 00:03:06.58\00:03:10.59 then Pharaoh decided that mass murder or infanticide by 00:03:10.62\00:03:15.79 drowning would achieve his ends but one woman chose to resist 00:03:15.82\00:03:21.26 the cruel mandate of a tyrannical ruler. 00:03:21.30\00:03:24.17 A mother's love knows no limits. 00:03:24.20\00:03:27.40 Determined to defy the king's decree, Jochebed hid her 00:03:27.44\00:03:32.64 newborn son at home for three months, 00:03:32.67\00:03:35.41 when the baby boy was too big and making too much noise 00:03:35.44\00:03:39.31 to hide, she resorted to desperate measures. 00:03:39.35\00:03:42.78 Gathering the sturdy reed that grew along the banks of the Nile 00:03:42.82\00:03:48.02 she wove a basket and smeared it with pitch to make sure 00:03:48.06\00:03:51.89 that it was watertight. Then she did something that only a 00:03:51.93\00:03:56.16 mother desperate to save her child would do. 00:03:56.20\00:03:59.27 She put her baby in the basket and placed the basket in the 00:03:59.30\00:04:03.77 reeds by the bank of the river. As a safety measure, 00:04:03.81\00:04:07.81 she asked her daughter Miriam to watch over the place where 00:04:07.84\00:04:11.78 her baby brother was hidden. 00:04:11.81\00:04:13.62 It was a massive gamble, a plan that didn't seem to have a clear 00:04:13.65\00:04:18.62 end gain beyond daily survival. The Nile was riddled with 00:04:18.85\00:04:24.03 as much danger as the life of a slave. 00:04:24.06\00:04:26.36 Boat traffic was heavy, crocodiles were everywhere 00:04:26.39\00:04:30.50 and any other number of potential problems 00:04:30.53\00:04:33.47 loomed large, but Jochebed was more than a Hebrew slave, 00:04:33.50\00:04:38.91 she was a woman of faith. 00:04:38.94\00:04:41.61 Placing her child amidst the safety of the reeds 00:04:41.64\00:04:45.81 she committed him to the protection of the God 00:04:45.85\00:04:48.75 she worshipped, a God who heard the prayers of 00:04:48.78\00:04:52.05 desperate mothers and slaves. A God who was powerful enough 00:04:52.09\00:04:56.46 to protect her son, a God who answered her prayers 00:04:56.49\00:05:00.70 in a miraculous and unprecedented way. 00:05:00.73\00:05:03.90 Join us this week as we begin a new series on the life of Moses. 00:05:03.93\00:05:08.90 The miracle baby who was rescued from the reeds 00:05:08.94\00:05:13.21 destined for the Royal Throne of the greatest kingdom on earth 00:05:13.24\00:05:17.05 at that time, but instead became God's chosen deliverer 00:05:17.08\00:05:22.42 of a nation of slaves. 00:05:22.45\00:05:24.05 The Nile River begins its journey somewhere near 00:05:39.30\00:05:42.74 Lake Victoria, it winds its way through the part of Africa 00:05:42.77\00:05:47.01 before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea nearly 7,000 00:05:47.04\00:05:51.65 kilometers north of its source. 00:05:51.68\00:05:53.72 For thousands of years the Nile has viewed with an almost 00:05:53.75\00:05:58.99 reverential awe by Egyptians. In fact Ancient Egyptians 00:05:59.02\00:06:03.32 worshipped the Nile among the many other gods 00:06:03.36\00:06:06.29 that they worshipped. 00:06:06.33\00:06:07.66 The Nile was regarded as the center of Egyptian life 00:06:07.70\00:06:11.50 and the center of the Cosmos. 00:06:11.53\00:06:13.20 It was key to Ancient Egyptian's life, ideology, and worship. 00:06:13.23\00:06:17.74 For example those Egyptians worshipped the sun as rah 00:06:17.77\00:06:22.74 the sun rose and set either side of the Nile. 00:06:22.78\00:06:26.51 Which meant there chief deity revolved around the Nile. 00:06:26.55\00:06:30.22 Ancient Egyptian Life depended on the annual inundation 00:06:30.25\00:06:35.16 or flooding of the Nile when the river would overflow 00:06:35.19\00:06:38.89 its banks and flood the surrounding valley. 00:06:38.93\00:06:41.56 When the waters receded, they left behind black, rich 00:06:41.60\00:06:46.30 mineral silt which made the soil extremely fertile. 00:06:46.33\00:06:51.04 When Jochebed hid her baby boy among the reeds on the banks 00:06:51.07\00:06:55.08 of the Nile River, she along with the rest of the 00:06:55.11\00:06:58.28 ancient Israelites lived in the land of Goshen. 00:06:58.31\00:07:01.45 In 1885, Edward Neville a Swiss Archeologist, 00:07:01.48\00:07:06.39 Egyptologist, and Biblical Scholar identified the 00:07:06.42\00:07:10.29 ancient site of Goshen. The site was located in the 00:07:10.33\00:07:14.06 Twentieth known or Province of Egypt and is located in the 00:07:14.10\00:07:18.53 Eastern part of the Nile Delta. 00:07:18.57\00:07:20.47 Living in the Nile Delta Region meant that Jochebed 00:07:20.50\00:07:25.11 would have had access to large sways of swampy river bank 00:07:25.14\00:07:29.94 where reeds and papyrus grew in abundance 00:07:29.98\00:07:32.91 but the Nile River was also fraught with danger. 00:07:32.95\00:07:36.95 Desperate times called for desperate measures 00:07:36.99\00:07:41.52 and Jochebed committed her son to God's keeping. 00:07:41.56\00:07:44.76 During the day Jochebed' s daughter Miriam kept a careful 00:07:44.79\00:07:50.07 eye on her baby brother's basket, now while Miriam was 00:07:50.10\00:07:54.07 keeping watch an unexpected visitor paid a visit to the 00:07:54.10\00:07:57.94 part of the river where the little Hebrew boy was hidden. 00:07:57.97\00:08:01.31 Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river to bathe 00:08:01.34\00:08:04.75 with the ladies in waiting. The Bible described what happened 00:08:04.78\00:08:09.25 next in these words... 00:08:09.28\00:08:10.79 When the curious princess opened the floating basket, 00:08:23.93\00:08:27.97 she was shocked to find a baby inside but her surprise 00:08:28.00\00:08:33.98 soon gave way to understanding and compassion. 00:08:34.01\00:08:36.78 She knew about her father's decree and knew that this 00:08:36.81\00:08:41.45 was a Hebrew child. Exodus chapter 2 and verse 6 say... 00:08:41.48\00:08:45.85 The situation touched her heart, it would have been easy for her 00:08:51.26\00:08:56.36 to obey her father's command and toss the baby back 00:08:56.40\00:09:00.50 into the water leaving him to drown, but instead, 00:09:00.54\00:09:04.84 she found herself drawn to the crying child. 00:09:04.87\00:09:08.14 In that moment perhaps sensing the compassion and kindness that 00:09:08.18\00:09:13.58 radiated from the princess at the river bank, 00:09:13.62\00:09:16.18 Miriam approached, she'd been watching the entire scene 00:09:16.22\00:09:21.12 unfold before her eyes no doubt terrified of what the princess 00:09:21.16\00:09:25.86 might do to her brother, seeing the princess' soft 00:09:25.89\00:09:29.66 expression gave her boldness to approach her and suggest a plan. 00:09:29.70\00:09:34.34 Exodus chapter 2 and verse 7 says... 00:09:34.37\00:09:37.67 The princess accepted the offer and Miriam quickly raced off 00:09:46.98\00:09:52.69 to find her mother. 00:09:52.72\00:09:54.06 A startled and most likely nervous Jochebed came trailing 00:09:54.09\00:09:59.33 after her excited daughter to face the princess. 00:09:59.36\00:10:02.80 Instead of censure or suspicion, she found an ally in the 00:10:02.83\00:10:08.10 most unlikely person, the actual daughter of the man 00:10:08.14\00:10:12.67 who had sentenced her son to death. 00:10:12.71\00:10:14.78 Handing the wailing baby to his mother, the princess 00:10:14.81\00:10:19.98 asked her to nurse him and she promised to pay Jochebed 00:10:20.02\00:10:23.69 for taking care of her own child. 00:10:23.72\00:10:26.32 Grateful and relieved Jochebed accepted the generous offer 00:10:26.35\00:10:31.33 and took her baby home, but before Jochebed left the 00:10:31.36\00:10:35.86 riverbank to take the baby home, the princess 00:10:35.90\00:10:38.90 gave him a name, Moses. 00:10:38.93\00:10:41.67 The name meant to pull out or draw from the river. 00:10:41.80\00:10:46.01 It was a fitting name because he had been pulled out of the river 00:10:46.04\00:10:50.45 by his new Egyptian mother who would eventually adopt him. 00:10:50.48\00:10:54.45 Hebrews chapter 11 and verse 23 describes the experience 00:10:54.48\00:10:59.52 of Moses parents in the face of impossible circumstances. 00:10:59.55\00:11:03.79 Their faith in God and their belief in God's purpose for 00:11:16.57\00:11:20.84 their son gave these Hebrew parents courage, 00:11:20.88\00:11:24.51 they chose to commit their son to God's protection 00:11:24.55\00:11:27.98 and what a reward they received for their faith 00:11:28.02\00:11:31.85 Often in life when we are faced with challenging circumstances 00:11:31.89\00:11:36.86 it's easy to give in to fear and despair, to focus on the giants 00:11:36.89\00:11:41.96 in our path without seeing any way around them. 00:11:42.00\00:11:45.33 And Hebrews 13 and verse 5 assures us that God has said... 00:11:45.37\00:11:50.51 This promise was fulfilled in the promise of Moses 00:11:54.21\00:11:57.45 when his mother chose to step out in faith and leave her child 00:11:57.48\00:12:02.32 in God's care. God delivered him and that same God 00:12:02.35\00:12:07.09 is willing to protect and deliver us as well. 00:12:07.12\00:12:10.96 When Moses was 12-years-old he was taken by his 00:12:10.99\00:12:17.73 royal Egyptian mother to live with her in the palace 00:12:17.77\00:12:21.40 and from that point forward he became her adopted son. 00:12:21.44\00:12:26.11 As a prince of Egypt Moses received a royal 00:12:26.14\00:12:30.11 Egyptian Education which would have included arts, science, 00:12:30.15\00:12:34.68 and military training. But through it all Moses tenaciously 00:12:34.72\00:12:39.49 clung to his identity as both a Hebrew and a follower of God. 00:12:39.52\00:12:44.23 Growing up in the heart of the Egyptian Royal Court, 00:12:44.26\00:12:47.83 Moses would have been surrounded by the wealth 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.70 and opulence of one of most powerful and affluent kingdoms 00:12:50.73\00:12:54.70 on the planet. 00:12:54.74\00:12:56.07 Not only was Egypt one of the most successful agricultural 00:12:56.10\00:13:00.41 economies of the ancient world, it was also an important trading 00:13:00.44\00:13:04.25 center and boasted some of the most celebrated architectural 00:13:04.28\00:13:08.38 marvels of the ancient and modern world. 00:13:08.42\00:13:10.89 The pyramids, in fact until the Eifel Tower was built in 1817 00:13:10.92\00:13:17.43 the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt the highest structure 00:13:17.46\00:13:21.86 in the world, not only that, the pyramids are among the 00:13:21.90\00:13:26.43 oldest structures in the world having survived largely intact 00:13:26.47\00:13:30.41 for over 4,000 years. 00:13:30.44\00:13:32.81 Now, an often-asked question in relation to the 00:13:32.84\00:13:36.64 story of Moses is what part of Egyptian history he occupied? 00:13:36.68\00:13:41.48 Well, recent archeological evidence gives us a clear answer 00:13:41.52\00:13:46.62 to this question. The Merneptah Stele discovered at 00:13:46.65\00:13:51.13 Thebes in 1896 and now housed at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo 00:13:51.16\00:13:56.43 offers us some interesting clues, 00:13:56.46\00:13:59.03 the Stele depicts victories of Merneptah, 00:13:59.07\00:14:02.27 the son of Ramses the Second, the longest reigning Monarch 00:14:02.30\00:14:05.91 of Egypt. Mentioned in this Demi are the Merneptah' s 00:14:05.94\00:14:09.84 victories over various kingdoms of the ancient world 00:14:09.88\00:14:13.62 including Israel. 00:14:13.65\00:14:14.98 By the time Merneptah claimed victories over Israel they were 00:14:15.02\00:14:19.75 already well settled in Canaan which indicates that they're 00:14:19.79\00:14:23.76 enslavement in Egypt and by extension Moses time in Egypt, 00:14:23.79\00:14:28.30 had to have been well before this time period. 00:14:28.33\00:14:31.07 Scholars placed the reign of Merneptah between 00:14:31.10\00:14:34.60 1213 to 1203 BC, he was the fourth Pharaoh of the 00:14:34.64\00:14:40.21 19th Dynasty. This means that Moses would have lived 00:14:40.24\00:14:44.71 well before this period of time. 00:14:44.75\00:14:46.82 Another marker that gives us a sense of the time period 00:14:46.85\00:14:51.59 that Moses would have lived in Egyptian history 00:14:51.62\00:14:54.16 is found in the Bible in I Kings chapter 6 and verse 1 which says 00:14:54.19\00:14:59.63 Now Solomon's Temple was built around 970 or 966 BC, 00:15:13.81\00:15:20.35 using that as a starting point scholars estimate that Moses 00:15:20.38\00:15:25.45 would have been found in the bulrushes by the river 00:15:25.49\00:15:28.12 around 1530 BC. 00:15:28.16\00:15:30.79 Now this places him within the 18th Dynasty in Egypt 00:15:30.83\00:15:35.36 which is classified as the 1st Dynasty of the new kingdom. 00:15:35.40\00:15:39.60 A period that is considered to be the golden age of 00:15:39.63\00:15:43.00 Egyptian culture and influence. 00:15:43.04\00:15:44.91 The kings of the 18th Dynasty worked hard to establish 00:15:44.94\00:15:49.34 Egypt as an empire taking on military campaigns into Syria 00:15:49.38\00:15:53.95 and Ubia. The best-known king of the 18th Dynasty is Thutmose 00:15:53.98\00:15:59.02 the 3rd. The most unconventional king of the 18th Dynasty 00:15:59.05\00:16:04.06 was Akhenaten who tried to transform Egyptian religion 00:16:04.09\00:16:08.36 from Polytheism and the worship of many gods into a Monotheistic 00:16:08.40\00:16:13.03 worship of just one god the sun god Alton. 00:16:13.07\00:16:17.24 But it is Akhenaten's son who is probably most familiar to us, 00:16:17.27\00:16:22.31 the teenage Tutankhamun the famous boy king whose 00:16:22.34\00:16:27.15 tomb was discovered and excavated in 1922 by 00:16:27.18\00:16:31.22 Howard Carter. The nearly intact tomb was packed full of 00:16:31.25\00:16:35.89 buried treasure, over 5,000 priceless artifacts of gold, 00:16:35.92\00:16:41.36 silver, and precious stones that received global media attention. 00:16:41.43\00:16:46.63 Today King Tut's Death Mask and mummy are popular symbols 00:16:46.67\00:16:51.74 of Egyptology and ancient Egyptian history and can be 00:16:51.77\00:16:56.04 found at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. 00:16:56.08\00:16:58.71 But the 18th Dynasty was also fraught with furious challenges 00:16:58.75\00:17:03.59 during the early part of the dynasty, the Pharaoh's 00:17:03.62\00:17:07.76 failed to produce male heirs which meant that when they died 00:17:07.79\00:17:12.46 there were no legitimate royal successors who could 00:17:12.49\00:17:15.96 ascend the throne of Egypt. 00:17:16.00\00:17:17.53 It wasn't a crisis that resolved itself within a few years 00:17:17.57\00:17:21.90 or even a single generation, for three generations 00:17:21.94\00:17:26.57 the great royal wives of the pharaohs failed to bear 00:17:26.61\00:17:30.68 their royal heirs which meant the king had sons from his 00:17:30.71\00:17:34.78 non-royal wives. 00:17:34.82\00:17:36.25 Now this created a dynastic crisis and through the 00:17:36.28\00:17:41.16 succession into question Thutmose I was Pharaoh of Egypt 00:17:41.19\00:17:46.76 around the time Moses was born he and his Great-Royal-Wife 00:17:46.80\00:17:51.87 were unable to produce a male heir, they did however have 00:17:51.90\00:17:56.81 one daughter whose name was Hatshepsut. 00:17:56.84\00:18:00.88 The irony is that while Thutmose I ordered 00:18:00.91\00:18:04.61 the destruction of Hebrew boys, he himself was struggling 00:18:04.65\00:18:08.98 to produce a royal male heir to take his throne when 00:18:09.02\00:18:12.42 the time came. 00:18:12.45\00:18:13.79 When Thutmose I died, his heir was the son of 00:18:13.82\00:18:18.36 one of his secondary wives. This new pharaoh, Thutmose II 00:18:18.39\00:18:23.47 married his royal half-sister Hatshepsut. 00:18:23.50\00:18:26.60 Now this was not unusual for Egypt, or for any other royal 00:18:26.63\00:18:31.54 dynasty of this period of history. Thutmose the second 00:18:31.57\00:18:36.61 was sickly and only managed to reign for two or three years. 00:18:36.64\00:18:39.61 When he died the question of dynastic succession was 00:18:39.65\00:18:44.35 once more raised, Hatshepsut was the Great-Royal-Wife 00:18:44.39\00:18:49.36 and she had been unable to produce a male heir 00:18:49.39\00:18:52.36 so once more the son of Elisa-wife became king. 00:18:52.39\00:18:57.07 Thutmose III was believed to be only two or three years old 00:18:57.10\00:19:02.57 when his father died and since he was so young Hatshepsut 00:19:02.60\00:19:07.08 became co-regent reigning as Pharaoh alongside of him. 00:19:07.11\00:19:10.95 Even when Thutmose III came of age, Hatshepsut continued 00:19:10.98\00:19:15.95 to rule as Pharaoh alongside him, she was the first female 00:19:15.98\00:19:20.76 Pharaoh to rule over Egypt and is widely regarded as a 00:19:20.79\00:19:25.06 very effective ruler undertaking an extensive building program 00:19:25.09\00:19:29.30 during her reign. 00:19:29.33\00:19:30.67 Now it was Hapsehset who drew Moses out of the water 00:19:30.70\00:19:35.17 as a baby, her involvement has raised the question of 00:19:35.20\00:19:38.81 why an Egyptian princess would choose to rescue a Hebrew baby? 00:19:38.84\00:19:43.88 Well, one viable theory is the dynastic crisis that the 00:19:43.91\00:19:49.58 Royal House of Egypt was facing. 00:19:49.62\00:19:51.42 Could it be possible that when Hapsehset saw the crying child 00:19:51.45\00:19:56.66 in the basket, she saw him as an answer to Egypt's succession 00:19:56.69\00:20:01.70 woes? Considering how much the Egyptians revered the Nile 00:20:01.73\00:20:06.70 and taking into account the fact that Moses was drawn 00:20:06.74\00:20:10.41 out of the Nile perhaps Hatshepsut the Pharaoh's 00:20:10.44\00:20:14.01 daughter saw him as a gift from the gods of Egypt. 00:20:14.04\00:20:18.15 In fact, we know that her main reasoning for naming him 00:20:18.18\00:20:22.38 Moses is because she drew him out of the Nile 00:20:22.42\00:20:26.25 perhaps she saw Moses as an answer to her prayers. 00:20:26.29\00:20:30.63 Moses was raised at the Royal Court and was most likely viewed 00:20:30.66\00:20:36.06 as a potential heir to the throne since he was the 00:20:36.10\00:20:39.57 adopted son of Hatshepsut the daughter of Pharaoh's 00:20:39.60\00:20:43.00 great royal wife and therefore considered to be part of the 00:20:43.04\00:20:47.28 legitimate royal line. 00:20:47.31\00:20:48.98 But the Bible says something interesting about Moses, 00:20:49.01\00:20:52.85 in the book of Hebrews chapter eleven and verse 24. 00:20:52.88\00:20:56.69 From a young age Moses understood his identity, 00:21:11.60\00:21:16.97 not just as a Hebrew but as a follower of Yahweh or Jehovah 00:21:17.01\00:21:22.08 the God of the Hebrews. 00:21:22.11\00:21:23.78 This God was nothing like the gods of Egypt, 00:21:23.81\00:21:27.82 Moses believed that what God had to offer him 00:21:27.85\00:21:31.55 was far more appealing and more enduring than anything the gods 00:21:31.59\00:21:36.83 and affluence of Egypt had to offer. 00:21:36.86\00:21:38.96 As alluring as the power and wealth of Egypt was 00:21:38.99\00:21:43.40 Moses saw something more alluring in the promises of God. 00:21:43.43\00:21:47.80 The stories of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph must have been 00:21:47.84\00:21:53.34 repeated to him time and time again and he made a choice 00:21:53.38\00:21:57.51 to hold on to the invisible all powerful of God of his ancestors 00:21:57.55\00:22:01.58 rather than the gods of Egypt. 00:22:01.62\00:22:03.82 Almost 400 years before Moses was born God had given Abraham 00:22:03.85\00:22:10.29 a prophecy and a promise. In Genesis chapter 15: 13, 14 00:22:10.33\00:22:15.96 God says to Abraham... 00:22:16.00\00:22:17.47 Now Moses like every other Hebrews have heard of this 00:22:37.02\00:22:43.16 prophecy and promise, the prophecy gave him context 00:22:43.19\00:22:48.16 for the circumstances they found themselves in 00:22:48.20\00:22:50.60 and the promise gave them hope that God would deliver them. 00:22:50.63\00:22:55.10 Given Moses position within the royal court and the miraculous 00:22:55.14\00:22:59.67 circumstances surrounding his infancy and childhood, 00:22:59.71\00:23:03.65 it would have been easy for him to see himself as this 00:23:03.68\00:23:08.08 deliverer. Added to this was his access to Egyptian military 00:23:08.12\00:23:12.79 power, wisdom and education along with his youthful 00:23:12.82\00:23:16.93 confidence but Moses' plans went awry in the worse possible way. 00:23:16.96\00:23:22.56 One day in the heat of the moment, Moses killed an 00:23:22.60\00:23:27.17 Egyptian who was threatening the life of a Hebrew slave. 00:23:27.20\00:23:30.27 Moses hoped he could hide his actions but the very next day 00:23:30.31\00:23:35.54 while trying to intervene in a dispute between two Hebrews 00:23:35.58\00:23:40.18 he was cruelly rebuffed and reminded of his crime. 00:23:40.22\00:23:44.59 The Hebrews fighting each other mockingly asked him, 00:23:44.62\00:23:48.99 In that moment Moses realized two things, 00:23:56.63\00:24:02.50 his people didn't respect him enough to follow him 00:24:02.54\00:24:06.24 and secondly, if the Hebrews knew about his crime 00:24:06.27\00:24:10.58 it was only a matter of time before Pharaoh 00:24:10.61\00:24:14.08 got wind of it too. 00:24:14.12\00:24:15.58 Things fell apart rapidly, the Bible says in Exodus 2:15... 00:24:15.62\00:24:21.52 Now it would have been easy for Moses to forget about his 00:24:31.90\00:24:36.17 ancestry and embrace the power and affluence of Egypt 00:24:36.20\00:24:40.68 he could have chosen Egypt and its gods, but instead 00:24:40.71\00:24:45.11 he chose a nation of slaves and their God. 00:24:45.15\00:24:48.88 Why, because Moses saw that what the God of the Hebrews, 00:24:48.92\00:24:53.82 the God of the Bible had to offer him was far more enduring 00:24:53.86\00:24:58.53 than anything that Egypt had to offer. 00:24:58.56\00:25:01.30 Egypt offered him a season of pleasure, fame, and fortune 00:25:01.33\00:25:06.53 but at the end of it, he would end up mummified and ensconced 00:25:06.57\00:25:11.57 in a pyramid or in a royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings. 00:25:11.61\00:25:15.38 But the God of his ancestors offered him something 00:25:15.41\00:25:19.41 entirely different. And what was it that the invisible 00:25:19.45\00:25:23.82 and all-powerful God of his father's offered Moses? 00:25:23.85\00:25:27.26 A country that was infinitely better than Egypt, 00:25:27.29\00:25:31.46 a heavenly country that would endure forever 00:25:31.49\00:25:34.90 God offered him eternity. John 3:16 summarizes the hope 00:25:34.93\00:25:43.00 that God offers each one of us, it's the same hope that 00:25:43.04\00:25:47.04 Moses grasped and it is also ours for the taking as well. 00:25:47.08\00:25:51.55 Through Jesus, we can not only find freedom from sin, 00:26:02.62\00:26:07.40 but we can also have hope for eternity. 00:26:07.43\00:26:10.47 It was this hope that Moses clung to as he found himself 00:26:10.50\00:26:15.50 a fugitive in the wilds of Median with no home, no family 00:26:15.54\00:26:20.38 and a bleak future. 00:26:20.41\00:26:22.48 What would happen next?
