The convict built Richmond Bridge in Tasmania is the oldest 00:00:27.39\00:00:31.53 stone arch bridge in Australia. 00:00:31.56\00:00:34.03 The foundation stone was laid in December 1823 00:00:34.06\00:00:37.93 and construction continued using convict labor 00:00:37.97\00:00:41.40 until its completion in 1825. 00:00:41.44\00:00:44.27 For 10 years it had the longest span of any bridge in Australia. 00:00:44.31\00:00:49.91 Just up the road from the bridge across the Cull River 00:00:49.94\00:00:54.45 is the St. John's Church, the oldest Catholic Church 00:00:54.48\00:00:57.92 in Australia. When this church was built in 1836 00:00:57.95\00:01:01.89 it was customary for parishioners who passed away to 00:01:01.92\00:01:05.93 be buried in what was considered the Sacred Church Grounds. 00:01:05.96\00:01:09.56 As you walk near the entrance of the church, 00:01:09.60\00:01:13.13 you may casually pass this little grave of Henry Emmet Amar 00:01:13.17\00:01:17.61 the only son of Thomas Francis and Catherine Amar. 00:01:17.64\00:01:21.58 Nearby is an inscription about his father Thomas. 00:01:21.61\00:01:25.55 It's a story of heartbreak, struggle and mystery. 00:01:25.58\00:01:30.69 You see, Thomas Omar, son of the Lord Mayor of the city of 00:01:30.72\00:01:34.82 Waterford Island was a prominent leader in the Young Island 00:01:34.86\00:01:38.59 Movement of the 1840's, he was an outspoken and idealistic 00:01:38.63\00:01:43.26 young political activist and was condemned to death in 1848 00:01:43.30\00:01:48.00 for his part in an insurrection aimed at restoring the 00:01:48.04\00:01:51.87 national independence of Ireland. 00:01:51.91\00:01:53.48 Due to a massive public outcry and defense of the young man 00:01:53.51\00:01:57.35 Omar sentence was commuted to transportation for life. 00:01:57.38\00:02:02.38 And so, in 1849 he was shipped as a convict or a prisoner 00:02:02.42\00:02:07.96 of the British Penal System to the opposite end of the world 00:02:07.99\00:02:11.89 to the island of Tasmania. 00:02:11.93\00:02:14.60 Join me on The Unbelievable Journey of Thomas Omar 00:02:14.63\00:02:19.00 as he seeks justice and a new life. 00:02:19.03\00:02:21.70 It's indeed a tale of patriotism and rebellion, of love and loss, 00:02:21.74\00:02:26.78 of escape and redemption, of war and tragedy. 00:02:26.81\00:02:30.75 You won't want to miss it. 00:02:30.78\00:02:33.38 Beginning in February 1848 Europe was rocked 00:02:48.06\00:02:52.50 by a series of Revolutionary Movements. 00:02:52.53\00:02:54.87 Beginning in Sicily and spreading to France, Germany, 00:02:54.90\00:02:59.14 Italy, Ireland, and the Austrian Empire. 00:02:59.17\00:03:02.34 They ended in failure and repression and were followed by 00:03:02.38\00:03:06.65 widespread disillusionment. 00:03:06.68\00:03:08.78 One such movement gained a foothold among the working class 00:03:08.82\00:03:12.39 people in Ireland during the great famine of 1845 to 1849. 00:03:12.42\00:03:17.43 During the famine over a million people died and a million more 00:03:17.46\00:03:22.40 left Ireland to settle in other countries. 00:03:22.43\00:03:25.10 As part of the social upheaval and rebellion a young patriot 00:03:25.13\00:03:30.21 Thomas Omar went to France to study revolutionary events 00:03:30.24\00:03:34.61 there, he returned home with a new flag of Ireland 00:03:34.64\00:03:38.11 made and given to him by French women sympathetic to the 00:03:38.15\00:03:42.25 Irish Corps. The flag was first flown in public on the 00:03:42.28\00:03:46.12 1st of March 1848 at Waterford Island. 00:03:46.15\00:03:49.42 Omar's Irish flag of green white and orange endured and became 00:03:49.46\00:03:55.43 the national flag of the Republic of Ireland. 00:03:55.46\00:03:58.23 Thomas Omar was an eloquent and gifted orator 00:03:58.27\00:04:02.77 who was very popular with the people, the social upheaval 00:04:02.80\00:04:06.74 came to a head in 1848 with the Young Islander Rebellion 00:04:06.78\00:04:11.28 against the British Monarchy. 00:04:11.31\00:04:13.11 Following the incident also known by the Battle of 00:04:13.15\00:04:17.52 Ballingarry in August 1848 Omar along with four of his fellow 00:04:17.55\00:04:22.32 revolutionaries was arrested, tried, and convicted of 00:04:22.36\00:04:27.60 sedition. The penalty for sedition was death by being 00:04:27.63\00:04:31.70 hung, drawn, and courted. Standing before the judge Omar 00:04:31.73\00:04:36.20 delivered an impassionate plea for clemency. 00:04:36.24\00:04:38.24 The Irish people loved Omar and also rallied together 00:04:38.27\00:04:43.18 to demand clemency for him, the judge relented and 00:04:43.21\00:04:47.08 commuted Omar's sentence to transportation for life 00:04:47.12\00:04:50.42 in the penal colony of Van Dieman's Land known today as 00:04:50.45\00:04:54.56 the island State of Tasmania, Australia. 00:04:54.59\00:04:57.83 Omar was shipped out as a political convict on board the 00:04:57.86\00:05:01.93 transport ship, the Swift in July 1849, most of the prisoners 00:05:01.96\00:05:08.37 or convicts as they were called received the severe punishments 00:05:08.40\00:05:12.14 for petty crimes and misdemeanors like stealing 00:05:12.17\00:05:16.11 a lace handkerchief or a loaf of bread. 00:05:16.14\00:05:18.51 During the convict era from 1788 to 1868 the British 00:05:18.55\00:05:24.82 sent over 165,000 convicts, men, women, and children 00:05:24.85\00:05:30.39 to the colonies in Australia, nearly half of them ended up in 00:05:30.43\00:05:35.63 Van Dieman's Land. 00:05:35.66\00:05:37.83 Omar arrived in Tasmania where he gave his word to the 00:05:37.87\00:05:42.30 authorities not to attempt an escape. In return, he was 00:05:42.34\00:05:47.21 granted a ticket of leave or permission to have comparative 00:05:47.24\00:05:50.95 freedom on the island. 00:05:50.98\00:05:52.31 He was first sent to live in Campbell Town and later in Ross 00:05:52.35\00:05:56.75 where his Britt Cottage still stands today. 00:05:56.79\00:06:00.19 While here in Ross, Omar spent a good deal of his time 00:06:00.22\00:06:05.59 in Hopes Hotel, at the time a local inn but now a 00:06:05.63\00:06:09.60 private residence. Omar's letters were sent from here 00:06:09.63\00:06:13.27 during his time in Ross. 00:06:13.30\00:06:15.60 One day while helping the local physician Dr. Hall with his 00:06:15.64\00:06:20.24 carriage, he met Ms. Catherine Bennett who at the time was 00:06:20.28\00:06:24.61 the governess caring for the six children of Dr. and Mrs. Hall. 00:06:24.65\00:06:28.62 Thomas and Catherine were married on the 22nd of February 00:06:28.65\00:06:32.75 1851 and lived in a cottage on the shores of Lake Sorrell. 00:06:32.79\00:06:37.96 But the restless and ambitious Omar couldn't be confined 00:06:37.99\00:06:42.66 to the penal colony for long, desperately wanting his freedom 00:06:42.70\00:06:46.94 and a new cause to champion, Omar began secretly meeting 00:06:46.97\00:06:51.74 with his fellow Irish rebels and plotting his escape. 00:06:51.77\00:06:55.38 By this time, he and Catherine had been married for almost 00:06:55.41\00:06:59.61 a year and Catherine was pregnant with their first child 00:06:59.65\00:07:03.22 and soon to give birth, but none of this constrained Omar. 00:07:03.25\00:07:07.62 When his father sent money to pay for the escape, 00:07:07.66\00:07:11.09 Omar organized with the Irish Sympathizers in Northern 00:07:11.13\00:07:15.93 Tasmania to assist him to meet up with the sailing ship bound 00:07:15.96\00:07:20.04 for Brazil and then on to America. 00:07:20.07\00:07:22.40 Leaving Catherine behind, Omar traveled mostly at night 00:07:22.44\00:07:27.98 past the mountains and great lakes and down into the town 00:07:28.01\00:07:31.71 of Westbury which is at the foot of the mountains. 00:07:31.75\00:07:34.62 It was a Galic-speaking area and he was sheltered there 00:07:34.65\00:07:39.19 until the coast was clear, then the Irish Sympathizers 00:07:39.22\00:07:43.29 rode Omar 60 Kilometers down the Tamar River 00:07:43.32\00:07:47.00 and out to sea in a difficult and dangerous conditions 00:07:47.03\00:07:50.93 to rendezvous with a waiting ship. 00:07:50.97\00:07:53.27 It all had to be navigated in the dark, no lights at all 00:07:53.30\00:07:57.97 to avoid being detected. 00:07:58.01\00:08:00.01 Omar successfully escaped and reached New York 00:08:00.04\00:08:05.68 in May 1852. Here he found himself among the throngs 00:08:05.71\00:08:10.52 of other Irish immigrants and was warmly welcomed by the 00:08:10.55\00:08:14.52 Irish exiles. Omar thrived in this new world with enticing 00:08:14.56\00:08:19.79 possibilities and soon began to make a new life for himself, 00:08:19.83\00:08:23.97 meanwhile, tragedy befell his family back in Tasmania. 00:08:24.00\00:08:29.50 Thomas and Catherine's son Henry Emmet Fitzgerald Omar 00:08:29.54\00:08:34.18 was born in 1852 just months after his father's escape 00:08:34.21\00:08:39.65 sadly at four months of age, little Henry contracted 00:08:39.68\00:08:44.02 Influenza and died. He was buried here in St. John's church 00:08:44.05\00:08:49.26 in Richmond. Devastated, Catherine left 00:08:49.29\00:08:53.83 Van Diemen's Land and sailed for London where she was met 00:08:53.86\00:08:57.33 by her father-in-law and then they both traveled on to 00:08:57.37\00:09:00.54 Waterford. On arrival at Waterford Railway Station 00:09:00.57\00:09:04.21 she was welcomed by thousands of citizens such was her 00:09:04.24\00:09:08.78 husband's fame in Ireland as a Nationalist. 00:09:08.81\00:09:11.81 However when she was rested and well enough to travel again 00:09:11.85\00:09:16.12 she sailed on to America to be with her husband. 00:09:16.15\00:09:19.75 But Thomas Omar had changed he dropped the O from his name 00:09:19.79\00:09:25.99 and was now known as Thomas Mar, he soon realized 00:09:26.03\00:09:30.83 that the social constraints that he'd experienced living 00:09:30.87\00:09:34.80 under the Monarchy were not applicable in a country like 00:09:34.84\00:09:37.97 America. Seizing the opportunities presented before 00:09:38.01\00:09:42.04 him he soon began to study law and journalism and reveled 00:09:42.08\00:09:47.02 in his new celebrity status. 00:09:47.05\00:09:49.38 Consequently his relationship with his wife, Catherine didn't. 00:09:49.42\00:09:54.69 Catherine spent three lonely months with Thomas 00:09:54.72\00:09:57.86 only to leave brokenhearted for Ireland carrying their 00:09:57.89\00:10:01.73 second child. Catherine went back to live with her 00:10:01.76\00:10:05.17 father-in-law Thomas senior who was still the mayor 00:10:05.20\00:10:08.60 of the city of Waterford. Sadly Catherine aged only 22 years 00:10:08.64\00:10:15.44 died soon after the birth of their second son 00:10:15.48\00:10:18.65 Catherine was buried in the family Mar grave at Faith Ledger 00:10:18.68\00:10:23.62 in Ireland. Thomas Mar never met his second son 00:10:23.65\00:10:27.72 who was raised by his relatives in Ireland and to us know 00:10:27.76\00:10:31.53 to have died while in the Philippines where he was buried. 00:10:31.56\00:10:35.00 Not long after completing his studies Mar began to lecture 00:10:35.03\00:10:41.17 or soon became a United States citizen, he then founded a 00:10:41.20\00:10:45.37 weekly newspaper called The Irish News 00:10:45.41\00:10:48.21 in addition to this Mar also published The Citizen, 00:10:48.24\00:10:53.25 now The Citizen was an anti- British pro-Irish Republican 00:10:53.28\00:10:56.79 Periodical that he published with a fellow revolutionary 00:10:56.82\00:11:00.46 friend John Mitchell. 00:11:00.49\00:11:02.22 During this time Mar was also court marshaled by a handful 00:11:02.26\00:11:07.06 of notable American citizens in New York 00:11:07.10\00:11:09.90 because they heard of his escape from the Penal Colony 00:11:09.93\00:11:13.77 in Van Dieman's Land. 00:11:13.80\00:11:15.14 Mar vowed that if he was found guilty, he would happily return 00:11:15.17\00:11:20.38 to Australia, but as it turned out the American court 00:11:20.41\00:11:24.81 found in his favor and acquitted him of the charges 00:11:24.85\00:11:28.38 that had been brought against him by the British Crown. 00:11:28.42\00:11:31.29 Just before the outbreak of the American Civil War 00:11:31.32\00:11:35.22 Mar joined the Union Army and was commissioned as a captain 00:11:35.26\00:11:39.49 in the 69th Infantry Regiment of the New York State Militia. 00:11:39.53\00:11:44.10 The 69th fought in the first battle of Bull Run 00:11:44.13\00:11:48.67 where the Union lost to the Confederates, Mar's commanding 00:11:48.70\00:11:52.57 Officer was taken as a Prisoner of War and Mar succeeded him 00:11:52.61\00:11:57.25 as Colonel. After the Battle of Bull Run, 00:11:57.28\00:12:01.02 Mar went back to New York and formed the Irish Brigade 00:12:01.05\00:12:05.99 he was named Brigadier General and led the brigade in a 00:12:06.02\00:12:10.19 Union Offensive launched in the southeastern part 00:12:10.23\00:12:13.63 of Virginia known as the Peninsula Campaign of1862. 00:12:13.66\00:12:18.17 During this campaign the Union won several decisive victories 00:12:18.20\00:12:23.67 and the Irish Brigade distinguished themselves 00:12:23.71\00:12:26.71 as CS Fighters. This reputation was further cemented 00:12:26.74\00:12:31.48 when Currier and Ives a New York printmaker and 00:12:31.51\00:12:35.18 Lithographer published a lithograph of Mar on horseback 00:12:35.22\00:12:39.32 leading his brigade in a bayonet charge against 00:12:39.35\00:12:42.69 Confederate soldiers. 00:12:42.72\00:12:44.06 After the war, Mar returned to politics and public service 00:12:44.09\00:12:49.63 with a passion, he was appointed secretary of the new territory 00:12:49.66\00:12:54.07 of Montana and shortly after his arrival found himself 00:12:54.10\00:12:58.01 appointed as acting governor by the US president 00:12:58.04\00:13:01.34 Andrew Johnson. Mar continued to serve the territory of 00:13:01.38\00:13:05.88 Montana until his disappearance in 1867. 00:13:05.91\00:13:09.78 That summer Mar made a fairly routine trip to Fort Benton, 00:13:09.82\00:13:14.56 Montana to meet a shipment of guns and ammunition 00:13:14.59\00:13:18.06 sent by General Sherman for the Montana Militia. 00:13:18.09\00:13:21.90 Fort Benton was a steamboat terminus on the Missouri River 00:13:21.93\00:13:26.70 and Mar was traveling on the steamboat GA Thompson 00:13:26.74\00:13:31.17 on its approach into Fort Benton, the final tragedy 00:13:31.21\00:13:35.44 came on the evening of the 1st of July, 1867 when Mar fell 00:13:35.48\00:13:41.18 overboard plunging into the churning waters of the 00:13:41.22\00:13:44.95 Missouri River. Mar was swept away with the current 00:13:44.99\00:13:49.59 and his body was never recovered, his death remains a 00:13:49.62\00:13:54.16 tragic mysterious accident in a family that was separated 00:13:54.20\00:13:58.77 not only in life but also in death. 00:13:58.80\00:14:01.67 The baby boy lies at Richmond, Tasmania, 00:14:01.70\00:14:05.87 the Australian mother lies at rest in Waterford Island, 00:14:05.91\00:14:10.35 the second son is buried in the Philippines and the 00:14:10.38\00:14:13.85 Irish patriot in the bed of the Missouri River. 00:14:13.88\00:14:17.62 but Mar's life was a roller- coaster ride of activism, 00:14:17.65\00:14:24.86 imprisonment, and redemption. 00:14:24.89\00:14:27.66 His life was colorful and diverse, he was a man 00:14:27.70\00:14:31.77 with a flawed character who made poor decisions particularly 00:14:31.80\00:14:36.44 in relation of abandonment of his wife and family 00:14:36.47\00:14:39.74 however, even though he had major shortcomings 00:14:39.77\00:14:43.38 we should recognize that he had strong vision, firm ambition, 00:14:43.41\00:14:48.08 and the kind of tenacity that insured that he chased after 00:14:48.12\00:14:52.09 his goals with a relentless passion that overcame 00:14:52.12\00:14:55.49 every obstacle. 00:14:55.52\00:14:57.26 In many ways, Mar was a man who possessed grit in spades. 00:14:57.29\00:15:03.16 Now grit is a concept that is being extensively studied by 00:15:03.20\00:15:08.40 psychologists and researchers. 00:15:08.44\00:15:10.34 In a book Grit The Power of Passion and Perseverance 00:15:10.37\00:15:14.98 psychologist and researcher Angela Lee Duckworth 00:15:15.01\00:15:18.65 reveals some interesting discoveries 00:15:18.68\00:15:21.48 she writes it, of all the predictors of success 00:15:21.52\00:15:25.12 talent, IQ, Emotional Intelligence, 00:15:25.15\00:15:28.19 none is more important or factors more largely 00:15:28.22\00:15:32.16 than Grit. 00:15:32.19\00:15:33.53 She describes grit as the ability to stay the course 00:15:33.56\00:15:37.27 for the long haul. 00:15:37.30\00:15:39.10 In other words, grit is the stamina both mental and 00:15:39.13\00:15:43.74 emotional to pursue long-term goals regardless of obstacles 00:15:43.77\00:15:48.04 or challenges. The ability to treat life and by extension 00:15:48.08\00:15:53.25 our goals like a marathon instead of a quick sprint. 00:15:53.28\00:15:57.72 Duckworth believes that grit is not an inborn ability 00:15:57.75\00:16:01.72 that only a few people are blessed with, 00:16:01.76\00:16:03.83 grit she says is something that can be cultivated 00:16:03.86\00:16:08.36 and taught to anyone willing to learn. 00:16:08.40\00:16:11.37 So how can we cultivate this important life skill called 00:16:11.40\00:16:16.74 grit? Well, Duckworth points to the work being done by Professor 00:16:16.77\00:16:21.11 Carol Dweck a professor of psychology at 00:16:21.14\00:16:24.08 Stanford University. Professor Dweck's research centers largely 00:16:24.11\00:16:29.25 on a concept she calls growth mindset. 00:16:29.28\00:16:32.59 Now growth mindset is the opposite of a fixed mindset. 00:16:32.62\00:16:37.76 As an example, Professor Dweck talks about a high school 00:16:37.79\00:16:42.43 in Chicago where students were required to pass 84 units 00:16:42.46\00:16:47.27 in order to graduate. Now interestingly students 00:16:47.30\00:16:51.57 who didn't pass a unit, instead of getting an F, 00:16:51.61\00:16:54.71 they were given the grade, Not Yet. 00:16:54.74\00:16:57.65 Not yet instead of fail gave them a sense that they shouldn't 00:16:57.68\00:17:03.18 give up but should keep persevering until they reach 00:17:03.22\00:17:06.72 their goal. Professor Dweck' s premise is simple 00:17:06.76\00:17:10.76 instead of educating people to think in terms of failure 00:17:10.79\00:17:14.60 or success, she suggests that people should be taught to 00:17:14.63\00:17:18.70 think in terms of not yet that every goal is achievable 00:17:18.73\00:17:23.14 given time, perseverance, and hard work. 00:17:23.17\00:17:26.78 Thomas Mar's life is a reflection of both grit 00:17:26.81\00:17:31.18 and growth mindset regardless of how many times he seemed 00:17:31.21\00:17:35.78 to get knocked down, the man just kept getting up 00:17:35.82\00:17:39.25 and forging onwards, especially in the pursuit of his goals 00:17:39.29\00:17:42.79 for his homeland. 00:17:42.82\00:17:44.53 Now, the Bible is filled with examples of both grit 00:17:44.56\00:17:51.33 and growth mindset, Moses exhibited considerable grit 00:17:51.37\00:17:56.17 as the leader of the Israelites when God called him to lead 00:17:56.20\00:17:59.97 a rag-tag group of slaves out of Egypt and into Canaan 00:18:00.01\00:18:03.98 He had His work cut out for Him. 00:18:04.01\00:18:06.92 At every step along the way the Israelites complained 00:18:06.95\00:18:10.29 about the rugged terrain, shortage of food, 00:18:10.32\00:18:13.82 lack of water, the hardships they endured, 00:18:13.86\00:18:17.16 their behavior would have driven a lesser man to despair. 00:18:17.19\00:18:21.90 But Moses was steady and calm in the face of almost incessant 00:18:21.93\00:18:27.97 whining. He refused to quit, he was given a goal 00:18:28.00\00:18:32.97 and even in the bleakest moments when it seemed that the odds 00:18:33.01\00:18:36.31 were all stacked against him, Moses refused to give up. 00:18:36.34\00:18:41.15 Turning to God for strength and guidance Moses pursued 00:18:41.18\00:18:45.55 the goal that was set before him with singleness of purpose. 00:18:45.59\00:18:49.82 Another example of grit is Joseph, 00:18:49.86\00:18:53.43 sold into slavery as a young man by his brothers 00:18:53.46\00:18:56.90 Joseph arrived in Egypt and was sold into the household 00:18:56.93\00:19:01.07 of Potiphar. Instead of giving way to despair and a sense of 00:19:01.10\00:19:05.51 hopelessness, Joseph clung tenaciously to his faith in God 00:19:05.54\00:19:10.85 and it was this faith that buoyed him through the struggles 00:19:10.88\00:19:14.25 that lay ahead. He was able to rise to the position of Chief 00:19:14.28\00:19:18.39 Steward of all that Potiphar owned until Potiphar's wife 00:19:18.42\00:19:22.39 falsely accused him and he was thrown into jail. 00:19:22.42\00:19:26.26 But even when he was unjustly accused, 00:19:26.29\00:19:29.56 and jailed for something he didn't do, joseph didn't give up 00:19:29.60\00:19:33.64 instead, he shored up his courage clung to his faith, 00:19:33.67\00:19:38.04 and made a difference in the prison. 00:19:38.07\00:19:40.44 In fact, the entirety of Joseph's story is one long 00:19:40.48\00:19:45.21 hard round of persistent persevering faith in God. 00:19:45.25\00:19:50.25 Joseph's persevering faith and faithfulness finally paid off 00:19:50.29\00:19:55.16 when he became Prime Minister of Egypt and saved not only 00:19:55.19\00:19:59.29 Egypt from famine, but also his own family from ruin and death. 00:19:59.33\00:20:04.13 In fact, God used Joseph's position in Egypt to provide a 00:20:04.17\00:20:09.27 place of refuge for the children of Israel. 00:20:09.30\00:20:12.27 Joseph displayed grit in his pursuit of his goal 00:20:12.31\00:20:16.24 to be faithful to God and follow him wherever He led. 00:20:16.28\00:20:20.45 And that grit was fueled by his mindset, his knowledge 00:20:20.48\00:20:25.09 that God loved him and would work all things together 00:20:25.12\00:20:28.82 for his good. 00:20:28.86\00:20:30.19 The mindset that God is in control of every circumstance 00:20:30.23\00:20:35.40 and that He is full of goodness and compassion 00:20:35.43\00:20:37.87 spurred Joseph on. It is this mindset that enabled Joseph 00:20:37.90\00:20:43.41 to persevere in holding onto his principles and 00:20:43.44\00:20:47.64 persevering in his faith. 00:20:47.68\00:20:49.71 Then in the New Testament, we find the Apostle Paul 00:20:49.74\00:20:54.08 another example of the grit and growth mindset. 00:20:54.12\00:20:58.25 God had given Paul a special work to share the good news 00:20:58.29\00:21:02.56 of Jesus with the gentiles, (non-Jews) it was an extremely 00:21:02.59\00:21:07.50 difficult demanding and challenging task. 00:21:07.53\00:21:11.10 Paul accepted it with full dedication and commitment 00:21:11.13\00:21:15.24 he undertook three extensive missionary journey's 00:21:15.27\00:21:18.67 that took him to far-flung regions of the empire 00:21:18.71\00:21:22.08 sharing the gospel wherever he went. 00:21:22.11\00:21:25.21 He became the great proclaimer of the goodness and grace 00:21:25.25\00:21:29.98 of God, he was threatened, persecuted, beaten, stoned, 00:21:30.02\00:21:35.02 and imprisoned. Yet through it all Paul is a man of 00:21:35.06\00:21:39.09 extraordinary courage and tenacity. 00:21:39.13\00:21:41.56 Nothing could stop him from pursuing his goal to take the 00:21:41.60\00:21:45.53 gospel to the world. When sharing the good news of Jesus 00:21:45.57\00:21:49.57 his message was consistent, steady and unwavering. 00:21:49.60\00:21:53.88 Paul had a grit about him a focus and determination 00:21:53.91\00:21:58.75 that is evident throughout his ministry. 00:21:58.78\00:22:01.55 But perhaps the most powerful example of grit and growth 00:22:01.58\00:22:06.45 mindset in the Bible is the example of Jesus. 00:22:06.49\00:22:09.92 When Jesus began his ministry He understood what lay 00:22:09.96\00:22:14.36 at the end of His path, a cross and a painful humiliating death. 00:22:14.40\00:22:20.30 and yet, He continued to press forward towards his goal of 00:22:20.34\00:22:25.57 saving the world from sin. 00:22:25.61\00:22:27.48 During His brief ministry, He had to work against almost 00:22:27.51\00:22:31.45 insurmountable odds, the rulers and leaders of the time, 00:22:31.48\00:22:36.02 seemed to be constantly aligned against Him. 00:22:36.05\00:22:39.29 Even His own followers didn't fully understand His mission, 00:22:39.32\00:22:44.13 the crowds who followed Him were fickle at best 00:22:44.16\00:22:47.30 looking for an easy handout, His mission was to bring 00:22:47.33\00:22:51.63 spiritual transformation to a dying world and yet 00:22:51.67\00:22:55.70 the people who thronged to see Him expected Him to deliver them 00:22:55.74\00:22:59.47 from the Romans. 00:22:59.51\00:23:00.84 Jesus' life was full of trials, contradiction, and opposition 00:23:00.88\00:23:06.78 and yet though He seemed to trudge through an almost 00:23:06.82\00:23:10.75 incessant storm surge, He stood firm and resolute in the 00:23:10.79\00:23:15.36 eye of it all. To everyone watching Jesus' entire mission 00:23:15.39\00:23:20.90 seemed to be heading towards failure and disaster, 00:23:20.93\00:23:24.07 even His own disciples thought this was the case. 00:23:24.10\00:23:27.34 The people wanted Him to defeat the Romans and rule the world 00:23:27.37\00:23:31.87 His Heavenly Father was leading Him towards death 00:23:31.91\00:23:35.08 on a Roman Cross and Resurrection 00:23:35.11\00:23:38.98 and yet Jesus' mindset was not one of failure but one of 00:23:39.01\00:23:44.09 Not Yet. Jesus possessed grit and a mindset that did not 00:23:44.12\00:23:50.16 accept defeat, His life revolved around being patient, 00:23:50.19\00:23:54.60 persevering and steadfast in following the plan God had 00:23:54.63\00:23:59.57 laid out for Him and He understood the principle 00:23:59.60\00:24:02.54 that when you follow God's plans for your life, 00:24:02.57\00:24:05.74 there is no failure. 00:24:05.77\00:24:07.51 The Bible promises us in Romans chapter 8:28... 00:24:07.54\00:24:13.68 In God's great plan for each of us, there is no failure, 00:24:22.72\00:24:27.86 there may be times in our lives when we feel frustrated 00:24:27.90\00:24:32.27 and overwhelmed by disappointment and defeat 00:24:32.30\00:24:35.64 it is in those moments that we need to look to Jesus 00:24:35.67\00:24:39.47 and remind ourselves that before there is a crown of 00:24:39.51\00:24:43.55 victory there is sometimes a cross of defeat. 00:24:43.58\00:24:47.28 Hebrews chapter 12 and verse three says... 00:24:47.32\00:24:50.35 Sometimes when we are mired in our struggles it's easy 00:25:01.23\00:25:06.17 to get discouraged but the Bible tells us to look outside of 00:25:06.20\00:25:10.51 ourselves and to think about Jesus. 00:25:10.54\00:25:13.17 Think about the fact that Jesus who healed countless people 00:25:13.21\00:25:17.65 who could bring the dead back to life, who could feed 00:25:17.68\00:25:20.35 thousands without almost nothing at hand, still chose the shame 00:25:20.38\00:25:25.05 and bitter humiliation of the cross for us. 00:25:25.09\00:25:29.36 Bible prophecy tells us that Jesus is coming soon 00:25:29.39\00:25:35.13 it points to the pestilence, wars, and turmoil around us 00:25:35.16\00:25:39.67 as fast fulfilling signs that we're not far from Jesus' return 00:25:39.70\00:25:44.61 to establish His kingdom on earth. 00:25:44.64\00:25:47.28 God's plan for our salvation has spanned over 6,000 years 00:25:47.31\00:25:52.91 and through it all, he has not been weary or inclined to admit 00:25:52.95\00:25:57.02 defeat. His love for us is limitless and even though 00:25:57.05\00:26:01.49 we make serious mistakes in our lives like Thomas Mar 00:26:01.52\00:26:05.49 He still loves us and never gives up on us. 00:26:05.53\00:26:09.00 Despite the setbacks and the obstacles God has patiently 00:26:09.03\00:26:14.17 persevered in His purposes for us. 00:26:14.20\00:26:17.31 With God, there is no failure just not yet. 00:26:17.34\00:26:23.75 Does your life seem to be spinning out of control? 00:26:23.78\00:26:28.32 Does it seem that everything around you is falling apart? 00:26:28.35\00:26:31.85 Are fear and anxiety consuming you? 00:26:31.89\00:26:35.82 If so, I'd like to recommend that you look to Jesus 00:26:35.86\00:26:41.83 then read the free gift we have for all our Incredible Journey 00:26:41.86\00:26:44.97 viewers today. 00:26:45.00\00:26:46.84 It's the Booklet Finding Courage to Meet Life's Challenges 00:26:46.87\00:26:52.07 this booklet will share with you how to gain the strength 00:26:52.11\00:26:55.64 and courage to persevere in the face of difficulty 00:26:55.68\00:26:59.25 to develop the mindset of continuing to press forward 00:26:59.28\00:27:03.49 despite the challenges. 00:27:03.52\00:27:05.49 I guarantee there are no costs or obligations whatsoever 00:27:05.52\00:27:09.26 so, make the most of this wonderful opportunity 00:27:09.29\00:27:12.83 to receive the free gift we have for you today. 00:27:12.86\00:27:16.60 Or visit our website tij.tv or simply scan the QR Code 00:27:34.92\00:27:40.96 on your screen and we'll send you today's free offer 00:27:40.99\00:27:44.43 totally free of charge and with no obligations. 00:27:44.46\00:27:47.40 You can also write to us at the addresses on your screen. 00:27:47.43\00:27:51.00 Or email us at info@tij.tv.
