It's over 70 years since one of the most amazing 00:00:24.35\00:00:28.49 achievements on earth occurred, it's an accomplishment 00:00:28.52\00:00:31.89 that is spoken of remembered and for many is often given 00:00:31.93\00:00:36.97 as a gauge of success. 00:00:37.00\00:00:38.33 And so, it's no surprise that the name of this one man 00:00:38.37\00:00:42.80 is carved indelibly in history. 00:00:42.84\00:00:46.21 In fact in his home country he is considered a hero 00:00:46.24\00:00:49.98 and is being voted the most admired person in the nation. 00:00:50.01\00:00:53.82 He even has a commemorative five stamp series 00:00:53.85\00:00:57.65 to honor his status and achievements. 00:00:57.69\00:00:59.89 In fact, he's the best known New Zealander in all the world. 00:00:59.92\00:01:04.96 But it's not just his achievement as a mountaineer 00:01:04.99\00:01:09.50 the conqueror of Mt. Everest, the first man with 00:01:09.53\00:01:13.03 Tenzing Norgay to climb to the top of the highest mountain 00:01:13.07\00:01:16.37 in the world that he is honored for. 00:01:16.40\00:01:18.97 It's because Edmund Hillary showed us how an ordinary 00:01:19.01\00:01:23.18 life can become a truly extraordinary one. 00:01:23.21\00:01:27.02 He has shown us that greatness is possible as he said in his 00:01:27.05\00:01:32.59 1975 autobiography... 00:01:32.62\00:01:35.09 So, join me, Gary Kent on an Incredible Journey 00:01:42.16\00:01:47.00 as we follow in the footsteps of Edmund Hillary the legendary 00:01:47.04\00:01:50.97 mountaineer who rose from humble beginnings 00:01:51.01\00:01:54.08 to reach the lofty heights of success 00:01:54.11\00:01:57.21 and in a sense lifted the world with him. 00:01:57.25\00:02:00.28 Edmund Hillary a man who inspired a nation and the world. 00:02:00.32\00:02:05.92 Edmund Percival Hillary was born in Remuera, Auckland 00:02:20.24\00:02:25.71 on the 20th of July 1919 he was the son of Percival and 00:02:25.74\00:02:30.95 Gertrude Hillary. His mother was a teacher and his father 00:02:30.98\00:02:35.02 published a newspaper The North Auckland Times. 00:02:35.05\00:02:38.15 The Hillary family moved to Tuakau 70 km south of Auckland 00:02:38.19\00:02:44.63 here on the banks of the Waikato River in 1920. 00:02:44.66\00:02:48.83 Percival who had served at Gallipoli during the I World War 00:02:48.86\00:02:53.34 was allocated a return serviceman's land allocation. 00:02:53.37\00:02:57.61 Percy also used the Veteran's Assistance to train as a 00:02:57.64\00:03:02.08 beekeeper and established a weekly newspaper 00:03:02.11\00:03:05.48 The Tuakau District News. 00:03:05.51\00:03:08.12 Edmund remembers that his early years in Tuakau were happy ones 00:03:08.15\00:03:13.25 as he roamed through the fields and along the banks of the 00:03:13.29\00:03:16.69 Waikato River near his home. The local Tuakau Primary School 00:03:16.73\00:03:21.16 was one kilometer from the Hillary home and Edmund 00:03:21.20\00:03:24.93 used to walk bare feet to school each day whether 00:03:24.97\00:03:28.40 it was raining, sunny, or frosty. 00:03:28.44\00:03:31.14 Edmund's mother was determined that he would get a good 00:03:31.17\00:03:35.44 secondary education and so at 13 he was enrolled at Auckland 00:03:35.48\00:03:40.88 Grammar School even though it meant long 12-hour days for him. 00:03:40.92\00:03:44.92 He had to travel the 2 hour train journey to school 00:03:44.95\00:03:48.49 every morning and afternoon. 00:03:48.52\00:03:50.76 Coming from a small country school Edmund found the large 00:03:50.79\00:03:55.03 boys school in the big city a terrifying experience. 00:03:55.06\00:03:58.80 He felt lost and alone in his new environment and as he said, 00:03:58.83\00:04:03.44 often munched on his sandwiches in solitary fashion. 00:04:03.47\00:04:07.38 But worse was to come, in the first week of high school 00:04:07.41\00:04:11.65 a physical education teacher looked at his small and 00:04:11.68\00:04:15.48 scrawny physique, rolled his eyes and muttered 00:04:15.52\00:04:18.55 "What will they send me next? 00:04:18.59\00:04:21.52 Edmund felt humiliated and said he developed a feeling 00:04:21.56\00:04:26.16 of inferiority but the gangly teenager did grow to a height 00:04:26.19\00:04:31.23 2 meters or 6'5" tall. He grew an incredible 22 cm 00:04:31.27\00:04:37.67 or 9" in one year and even though his daily commute 00:04:37.71\00:04:42.68 didn't allow him to participate in after-school sports, 00:04:42.71\00:04:46.82 he found another way to stay fit and active. 00:04:46.85\00:04:50.29 When the train is traveling slowly Edmund would 00:04:50.32\00:04:54.56 run alongside the train and would leap on at the last moment 00:04:54.59\00:04:58.03 when it started to increase it's speed. 00:04:58.06\00:05:00.40 He soon became very fit and was able to excel in all 00:05:00.43\00:05:05.23 sports classes but his life would change forever 00:05:05.27\00:05:09.80 when he was 16 years old and in his last year at 00:05:09.84\00:05:13.31 Auckland Grammar. 00:05:13.34\00:05:14.68 He went on a school trip to Mount Ruapehu, 00:05:14.71\00:05:17.75 the mountain is actually a volcano with world-class 00:05:17.78\00:05:21.32 ski fields in winter. 00:05:21.35\00:05:22.85 Edmund was enchanted by the glistening snow, 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.09 the frozen streams and the vistas in this strange and 00:05:26.12\00:05:29.76 exciting new world. Edmund enjoyed 10 glorious days of 00:05:29.79\00:05:35.83 skiing and playing on the lower slopes of the mountain. 00:05:35.86\00:05:39.70 But this visit to Mount Ruapehu did spark his interest in 00:05:39.73\00:05:44.11 mountaineering. On completing school Edmund enrolled in 00:05:44.14\00:05:48.84 Auckland University to study mathematics and science 00:05:48.88\00:05:52.41 but found it hard to settle and make friends with the 00:05:52.45\00:05:56.02 with the students. 00:05:56.05\00:05:57.52 So after two years he dropped out to work full-time for the 00:05:57.55\00:06:01.29 family bee-keeping business with his father and 00:06:01.32\00:06:04.76 younger brother Rex. 00:06:04.79\00:06:06.13 He also joined a tramping club, now that's the New Zealand name 00:06:06.16\00:06:10.77 for hiking and spent his Sunday's walking in the 00:06:10.80\00:06:14.07 Waitakere's, a range of mountains just west of Auckland. 00:06:14.10\00:06:17.77 Edmund soon found that he had more physical energy than most 00:06:17.81\00:06:21.94 and reveled in driving himself to the limit. 00:06:21.98\00:06:26.01 Edmund became passionate about mountain climbing 00:06:26.05\00:06:30.02 and during his early 20's he traveled to the Southern Alps 00:06:30.05\00:06:33.89 of New Zealand twice a year. In February for rock climbing 00:06:33.92\00:06:37.99 and then again in September to improve his ice work. 00:06:38.03\00:06:41.80 In 1939 Hillary was thrilled to actually climb his first peak 00:06:41.83\00:06:47.77 Mount Olivia, a mountain of nearly 2,000 meters near 00:06:47.80\00:06:52.47 Mount Cook in the Southern Alps. 00:06:52.51\00:06:54.14 As his skill and confidence grew he conquered peak after peak 00:06:54.18\00:06:59.41 and particularly enjoyed discovering new 00:06:59.45\00:07:02.85 climbing tracks up the rugged mountain ranges. 00:07:02.88\00:07:05.82 Edmund was so keen to equip himself with the best advice 00:07:05.85\00:07:10.13 and training that he would save his pennies to pay for 00:07:10.16\00:07:13.76 the very best guides. He soon developed a reputation 00:07:13.80\00:07:17.60 as a skilled safe and cool-headed climber. 00:07:17.63\00:07:21.50 The World War II Japanese threat in the Pacific and the arrival 00:07:21.54\00:07:27.21 of conscription changed Edmund's earlier Pacifist inclinations. 00:07:27.24\00:07:31.31 Although his father had applied for him to be excused from 00:07:31.35\00:07:35.22 enlisting on the grounds that honey production was 00:07:35.25\00:07:38.65 an essential service, he finally allowed Edmund to join 00:07:38.69\00:07:42.62 the New Zealand Royal Air Force. 00:07:42.66\00:07:44.73 Edmund's initial training was in Marlborough in the 00:07:44.76\00:07:49.30 south island New Zealand, here Hillary would spend all of his 00:07:49.33\00:07:53.60 free time mountain climbing 00:07:53.64\00:07:55.37 His first solo ascent was at Mt. Tapuacruku at 2,885 meters, 00:07:55.40\00:08:02.61 it was the highest mountain outside of the well-known 00:08:02.64\00:08:06.78 Southern Alps. In the last year of the war Edmund 00:08:06.82\00:08:11.35 was serving as a flying-boat navigator near Figi and 00:08:11.39\00:08:15.39 the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. 00:08:15.42\00:08:17.43 When he was severely burnt in a boating accident when a broken 00:08:17.46\00:08:21.56 petrol tank on a motorboat burst into flame Hillary 00:08:21.60\00:08:25.43 braced himself to leap over- board but the boat suddenly 00:08:25.47\00:08:29.60 hit a big wave and he was thrown backward onto the sizzling 00:08:29.64\00:08:33.48 engine cover. Even though he was in pain and badly burned 00:08:33.51\00:08:38.41 Hillary then had to swim 500 meters to shore 00:08:38.45\00:08:41.78 and walk another kilometer to get medical help. 00:08:41.82\00:08:45.45 The New Zealand Air Force sent a message to his parents warning 00:08:45.49\00:08:50.03 them that their son was critically ill and would be 00:08:50.06\00:08:53.90 discharged on sick leave. 00:08:53.93\00:08:55.86 They were told Hillary would need many months to recover 00:08:55.90\00:08:59.87 but three weeks later Hillary chose to convalesce in the 00:08:59.90\00:09:05.17 Southern Alps finding a friend and mentor in Harry Ayres 00:09:05.21\00:09:09.31 New Zealand's most outstanding climber at that time. 00:09:09.34\00:09:12.41 The years between 1946 and his first trip to the Himalayas 00:09:12.45\00:09:17.72 was spent conquering every notable peak in the 00:09:17.75\00:09:21.39 Southern Alps. 00:09:21.42\00:09:22.76 Now, the best-known peak here is Mount Cook renowned for its 00:09:22.79\00:09:27.30 panoramic Alpine beauty and remote wilderness 00:09:27.33\00:09:30.70 a rugged land of rock of ice. 00:09:30.73\00:09:33.13 1948 became a memorable year for Hillary when he made his 00:09:33.17\00:09:39.54 first ascent of Ayer Rocky, Mount Cook, 00:09:39.57\00:09:42.24 the highest mountain in New Zealand at 3,724 meters 00:09:42.28\00:09:47.35 or 12,218 feet. Then a year later in 1949 Edmund Hillary 00:09:47.38\00:09:55.86 along with Harry Ayres made the first descent up the 00:09:55.89\00:09:59.69 challenging south ridge of Mount Cook and completed the 00:09:59.73\00:10:03.43 Grand Traverse as well. 00:10:03.47\00:10:04.93 Hillary was now involved in serious mountain climbing 00:10:04.97\00:10:09.70 he had met George Lowe a fellow mountaineer while 00:10:09.74\00:10:13.38 climbing Mount Cook and two years later in 1951 00:10:13.41\00:10:17.85 Hillary and Lowe took part in a New Zealand expedition 00:10:17.88\00:10:21.88 to the gavel Himalaya where they climbed five peaks 00:10:21.92\00:10:25.59 over 6,000 meters or 20,000 feet high. 00:10:25.62\00:10:29.29 Then in 1952 Hillary and Lowe joined the 10-week British 00:10:29.32\00:10:35.83 Cho Oyu expedition, now Cho Oyu is 20 kilometers west of 00:10:35.86\00:10:41.50 Mount Everest and is the world's 6th highest mountain, 00:10:41.54\00:10:45.04 it's also considered the best practice mountain before 00:10:45.07\00:10:49.28 attempting the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. 00:10:49.31\00:10:52.31 Now Mount Everest is not just the highest mountain in the 00:10:52.35\00:10:56.89 world but to climb this formidable mountain is 00:10:56.92\00:11:01.06 considered the pinnacle of human achievement. 00:11:01.09\00:11:03.59 At 8,848 meters or 29,031 feet high, this mountain is usually 00:11:03.63\00:11:12.83 covered by hurricane-force winds and sub-freezing temperatures. 00:11:12.87\00:11:17.04 Back in 1953 Hillary and Lowe received the invitation that 00:11:17.07\00:11:22.84 they'd been hoping and dreaming for, they were invited to join 00:11:22.88\00:11:26.85 Colonel John Hunts 1953 British Everest Expedition. 00:11:26.88\00:11:32.15 It was the 9th British expedition to Mount Everest 00:11:32.19\00:11:36.16 and Hunt was given a special leave from the British Army 00:11:36.19\00:11:40.06 to organize a military-style expedition in the hope of 00:11:40.10\00:11:44.90 successfully reaching the summit of Mount Everest. 00:11:44.93\00:11:47.77 It was a massive undertaking with weeks of detailed planning 00:11:47.80\00:11:53.07 and intense training and preparation. 00:11:53.11\00:11:55.44 There were 350 porters, 20 Nepalese mountain guides 00:11:55.48\00:12:00.72 called Sherpers and tons of supplies to support the 00:12:00.75\00:12:05.35 chosen ten climbers. 00:12:05.39\00:12:07.29 The climb to Mount Everest takes many days, the trek to 00:12:07.32\00:12:12.23 Everest Base Camp is between 10 to 14 days and then it takes 00:12:12.26\00:12:16.87 another 39 to 40 days to reach the summit of Mount Everest. 00:12:16.90\00:12:21.07 Now, the reason it takes so long to summit Everest 00:12:21.10\00:12:25.87 is so that the human body can adjust to the extreme altitude, 00:12:25.91\00:12:30.61 the higher the altitude the less oxygen there is in the air 00:12:30.65\00:12:35.02 compared to sea level. 00:12:35.05\00:12:36.75 So climbers normally use bottled oxygen to help them withstand 00:12:36.79\00:12:42.02 the effects of the extreme high altitude. 00:12:42.06\00:12:45.33 From the ten climbers Colonel Hunt chose the two climbing 00:12:45.36\00:12:50.27 groups that would be given the opportunity to reach 00:12:50.30\00:12:53.94 the summit. The first group of Tom Boudillian and Charles Evans 00:12:53.97\00:12:58.41 came so close to being the first ones to reach the South Summit 00:12:58.44\00:13:03.38 on the 26th of May, 1953. 00:13:03.41\00:13:06.18 Though just less than 100 meters or around 300 feet away from 00:13:06.21\00:13:12.35 the top when unfortunately due to a malfunction of their 00:13:12.39\00:13:16.73 closed circuit bottled oxygen breathing apparatus 00:13:16.76\00:13:20.26 the pair had to reluctantly turn around and descend 00:13:20.30\00:13:24.90 without reaching the summit of Everest. 00:13:24.93\00:13:27.34 Then the second climbing group of Edmund Hillary and his 00:13:27.37\00:13:32.01 sherpa companion Tenzing Norgay were now directed to try 00:13:32.04\00:13:36.71 for the summit. 00:13:36.75\00:13:39.31 Snow and wind held the pair back at their base camp at South Col 00:13:41.82\00:13:46.59 for two days, the next morning on the 29th of May 1953 00:13:46.62\00:13:53.16 Edmund found that his boots had frozen solid outside the tent 00:13:53.19\00:13:57.80 it took two hours to warm them before he could put them on 00:13:57.83\00:14:01.94 and then set out for the summit. 00:14:01.97\00:14:04.27 The two climbers soon faced a nearly vertical rock face 00:14:04.31\00:14:09.54 of 12 meters or 40 feet, the last real challenge 00:14:09.58\00:14:13.68 before reaching the summit. Edmund found a narrow crack 00:14:13.72\00:14:18.72 in the rock and managed to wedge his way up 00:14:18.75\00:14:21.82 between the rock wall and ice. 00:14:21.86\00:14:24.13 Later this section of the mountain would be named 00:14:24.16\00:14:28.20 Hillary Stick. Tenzing then followed and climbed through 00:14:28.23\00:14:33.34 the gap and it was just a few more steps and they stood 00:14:33.37\00:14:37.94 on top of the mountain. 00:14:37.97\00:14:40.04 Tenzing and his 1955 autobiography wrote that 00:14:40.08\00:14:46.51 Hillary took the first step onto the summit and he followed. 00:14:46.55\00:14:50.59 They reached Everest's summit the highest point on earth 00:14:50.62\00:14:54.79 at 11:30 a.m. on the 29th of May, 1953. 00:14:54.82\00:14:59.93 They stayed only 15 minutes at the summit 00:14:59.96\00:15:03.40 Edmund Hillary took the famous photo of Tenzing posing 00:15:03.43\00:15:08.67 with his ice ax. He also left a cross up there he'd been given 00:15:08.70\00:15:13.31 by John Hunt and Tenzing left some offerings of food. 00:15:13.34\00:15:17.58 Hillary and Tenzing were the first men to stand on the roof 00:15:17.61\00:15:22.32 of the world on the top of Mount Everest. 00:15:22.35\00:15:25.72 The news of their achievement raced quickly around the world 00:15:25.75\00:15:31.89 the world's highest mountain had finally been conquered, 00:15:31.93\00:15:36.43 it was a pinnacle of human physical achievement and 00:15:36.46\00:15:40.74 endeavor. 00:15:40.77\00:15:42.10 The final frontier of earthly exploration had been reached. 00:15:42.14\00:15:46.57 There was a frenzied celebration throughout the 00:15:46.61\00:15:50.38 British Commonwealth as news reached London, 00:15:50.41\00:15:52.91 It arrived just in time for Queen Elizabeth the 2nd's 00:15:52.95\00:15:57.22 Coronation on the 2nd of June, 1953 and as one of her first 00:15:57.25\00:16:03.09 acts, the young queen awarded Hillary The Knight Commander 00:16:03.12\00:16:08.26 of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire 00:16:08.30\00:16:11.33 he was now Sir Edmund Hillary. 00:16:11.37\00:16:14.64 Hillary returned home to New Zealand in triumph 00:16:14.67\00:16:21.61 a celebrity and hero. Hillary married Louise Mary Rose 00:16:21.64\00:16:27.52 a few months later on the 3rd of September 1953. 00:16:27.55\00:16:32.02 Together they had three children, Peter, Sarah, and 00:16:32.05\00:16:36.76 Belinda but Edmund Hillary had experienced the taste of 00:16:36.79\00:16:42.23 adventure and the thrill of conquest and was soon involved 00:16:42.26\00:16:46.17 in another expedition. 00:16:46.20\00:16:47.60 He led the New Zealand component of the Commonwealth 00:16:47.64\00:16:51.77 Tran-Antarctica Expedition in 1957, and 1958 which was under 00:16:51.81\00:16:57.75 the overall command of the British explorer 00:16:57.78\00:17:00.65 Sir Vivian Fuchs. 00:17:00.68\00:17:02.32 Hillary set out from Scott base on the edge of the 00:17:02.35\00:17:06.12 Ross Ice Shelf driving a modified Ferguson Farm Tractors 00:17:06.15\00:17:10.66 they headed south to establish food and fuel depo's 00:17:10.69\00:17:14.86 for the British group which had left from the continent's 00:17:14.90\00:17:18.33 opposite coast. Hillary was rent to turn back to Scott Base 00:17:18.37\00:17:23.67 after laying the supplies. 00:17:23.71\00:17:25.74 But when the New Zealand Antarctic Committee 00:17:25.77\00:17:29.24 gave Hillary permission to carry on further than planned, 00:17:29.28\00:17:33.48 Fuchs welcomed Hillary's offer to scout a route through the 00:17:33.52\00:17:38.29 crevices and then lead to Hillary's last supply dump. 00:17:38.32\00:17:42.79 But instead of testing only part of the route Hillary 00:17:42.82\00:17:47.10 and against the instructions of the British Rough Sea Committee 00:17:47.13\00:17:51.37 forged on. 00:17:51.40\00:17:52.97 By the 4th of January 1958 Hillary's party became the 00:17:53.00\00:17:58.74 the first to reach the South Pole over land since 00:17:58.77\00:18:02.14 Robert Filkins Scott ill-fated journey in 1912. 00:18:02.18\00:18:06.72 In the decades after his Everest Ascent Hillary published 00:18:06.75\00:18:12.15 several best-selling accounts of his exploits and received 00:18:12.19\00:18:15.82 big fees for his product endorsements, 00:18:15.86\00:18:18.66 personal appearances, and lecture tours. 00:18:18.69\00:18:22.10 So, in 1964 with these funds Hillary created the 00:18:22.13\00:18:28.00 Himalayan Trust, he said... 00:18:28.04\00:18:30.41 over the next 30 years with the help of the donors and 00:18:38.18\00:18:43.22 volunteers from New Zealand and other countries 00:18:43.25\00:18:46.19 the Trust built more than a dozen schools, two airfields, 00:18:46.22\00:18:51.29 two hospitals, and several medical clinics. 00:18:51.33\00:18:54.66 These efforts became Hillary's greatest contribution 00:18:54.70\00:18:59.83 to the region he loved and helped earn Hillary the title 00:18:59.87\00:19:03.44 "Burra Sahib" meaning Big in Heart among the 00:19:03.47\00:19:08.28 Nepalese Sherpa people but it also led to the most 00:19:08.31\00:19:11.85 tragic event in his life. 00:19:11.88\00:19:13.88 On the 31st of March 1975, his wife Louise and younger daughter 00:19:13.92\00:19:20.36 Belinda were flying from Kathmandu to Phaphlu 00:19:20.39\00:19:24.79 where Edmund was helping to build a hospital in Nepal. 00:19:24.83\00:19:28.76 Sadly, the small plane crashed soon after take-off at 00:19:28.80\00:19:34.50 Kathmandu Airport with all lives lost. 00:19:34.54\00:19:38.04 The deaths of his wife and daughter were a shattering blow 00:19:38.07\00:19:43.01 to Hillary, then tragedy struck again in 1979 00:19:43.04\00:19:49.35 when Hillary's close friend Peter Mulgrew who had been 00:19:49.38\00:19:54.12 with him on the Commonwealth Tran-Antarctic Expedition 00:19:54.16\00:19:58.06 of 1957, 1958 was killed in the plane crash at 00:19:58.09\00:20:03.50 Mount Erebus in Antarctica when New Zealand flight TE901 00:20:03.53\00:20:09.17 crashed into Mount Erebus killing all 257 passengers 00:20:09.20\00:20:14.54 and crew. 00:20:14.58\00:20:15.91 Edmund Hillary received many awards for his outstanding 00:20:15.94\00:20:24.45 achievements. In 1987, he was among the first 20 people 00:20:24.49\00:20:29.62 selected as members of the Order of New Zealand 00:20:29.66\00:20:32.89 his home country's highest honor. 00:20:32.93\00:20:35.40 The same year, Hillary was honored to be the only 00:20:35.43\00:20:40.07 living person to feature on a New Zealand Bank Note. 00:20:40.10\00:20:43.61 Sir Edmund Hillary died in Auckland on the 00:20:43.64\00:20:48.98 11th of January, 2008 aged 88, he was honored by a funeral 00:20:49.01\00:20:55.25 on the 22nd of January, the same year and then on the 00:20:55.28\00:20:59.55 29th of February his ashes were scattered on Hauraki Gulf 00:20:59.59\00:21:04.06 by his wife, Lady Hillary and children Peter and Sarah. 00:21:04.09\00:21:08.43 On the 2nd of April the same year Queen Elizabeth II 00:21:08.46\00:21:13.74 hosted a special memorial service for Hillary 00:21:13.77\00:21:17.51 at Windsor Castle near London. 00:21:17.54\00:21:20.11 Edmund Hillary had stood on the roof of the world 00:21:20.14\00:21:24.01 and both the North and South Poles as well, not bad for a 00:21:24.05\00:21:29.68 New Zealand beekeeper. 00:21:29.72\00:21:31.12 In addition to his remarkable achievements as a mountaineer, 00:21:31.15\00:21:37.86 adventurer, diplomatic philanthropist, 00:21:37.89\00:21:40.80 and the most well-known New Zealander in the world 00:21:40.83\00:21:43.43 Edmund Hillary is also remembered for his humility 00:21:43.47\00:21:48.07 and generosity and in particular his humanitarian contribution 00:21:48.10\00:21:53.27 to the Sherpa people of the Himalayas. 00:21:53.31\00:21:55.58 You see, the higher he climbed, the further he could see, 00:21:55.61\00:21:59.81 he could see the needs of those less fortunate than himself 00:21:59.85\00:22:04.05 and determined to make a difference. 00:22:04.09\00:22:07.26 He turned success into significance. 00:22:07.29\00:22:11.16 Hillary credited his achievements to a combination 00:22:11.19\00:22:15.96 of his Christian beliefs, positive attitude, grit and 00:22:16.00\00:22:19.90 determination, health and fitness. 00:22:19.93\00:22:22.57 He believed it was the secret to his life of purpose, 00:22:22.60\00:22:26.44 a life that went beyond the mediocre to new heights 00:22:26.47\00:22:30.55 to a successful life. His own assessment of his life of 00:22:30.58\00:22:35.35 adventure on his 85th birthday was typically modest 00:22:35.38\00:22:39.32 when he said. 00:22:39.35\00:22:40.69 Christianity and a faith in God gives us meaning and 00:22:44.06\00:22:48.16 purpose in life, it brings peace, happiness, and hope 00:22:48.20\00:22:52.40 it also helps us cope with the challenges, tragedies, and 00:22:52.43\00:22:56.40 disappointments in life, this was the foundation 00:22:56.44\00:23:00.28 that brought Hillary success in his life and it can do the same 00:23:00.31\00:23:04.61 for us today. 00:23:04.65\00:23:05.98 It's the kind of strength that God loves and gives us, 00:23:06.01\00:23:10.35 you see, you don't have to necessarily be athletic 00:23:10.39\00:23:14.39 nor do you have to be naturally strong because God has 00:23:14.42\00:23:18.89 promised 00:23:18.93\00:23:20.26 A faith in God means knowing about God, have a relationship 00:23:26.63\00:23:31.87 with Him and accepting all He has to offer us. 00:23:31.91\00:23:34.98 He wants to see us succeed and wants to bring meaning and 00:23:35.01\00:23:40.05 purpose to our lives. 00:23:40.08\00:23:41.95 Before you were born God knew what your life had in store 00:23:49.39\00:23:53.73 for you, both here on earth and forever and eternity 00:23:53.76\00:23:57.93 commit your life to Him and He will guide you and teach you 00:23:57.97\00:24:02.50 to live out our true purpose in life, He will teach you to 00:24:02.54\00:24:06.44 recognize and know your true self and most importantly 00:24:06.47\00:24:10.55 your creator in order to live your life to the fullest. 00:24:10.58\00:24:15.02 You see, unlocking your true purpose will reduce your stress, 00:24:15.05\00:24:20.06 simplify your decisions, increase your satisfaction, 00:24:20.09\00:24:23.93 and most importantly, prepare you for eternity. 00:24:23.96\00:24:27.96 Sadly most people don't know what confess really is, 00:24:28.00\00:24:34.77 some people think it means you make a lot of money, 00:24:34.80\00:24:38.51 but you can make a ton of money and be an absolute failure. 00:24:38.54\00:24:43.18 Some people think it means being famous but you can be famous 00:24:43.21\00:24:48.68 and totally miss the point of life. 00:24:48.72\00:24:51.25 So, what is real success? 00:24:51.29\00:24:55.82 Well the Bible says real success is being who God made you to be. 00:24:55.86\00:25:02.63 It means you are not trying to be someone else 00:25:02.66\00:25:05.93 or what someone else wanted you to be. 00:25:05.97\00:25:08.64 You'll only find real success when you spend your life 00:25:08.67\00:25:13.21 as the person God created you to be. 00:25:13.24\00:25:16.21 Here's what the Bible says... 00:25:16.24\00:25:19.01 God came to earth in human form 2,000 years ago 00:25:32.69\00:25:36.90 so you could be made complete in Christ, 00:25:36.93\00:25:40.14 that means you have everything you need through Jesus' 00:25:40.17\00:25:44.21 authority and power. 00:25:44.24\00:25:45.77 You lack nothing to be a success in life 00:25:45.81\00:25:49.68 because success is being you. 00:25:49.71\00:25:53.21 In other words, being successful in life means you are being 00:25:53.25\00:25:57.89 yourself, the person God made you to be. 00:25:57.92\00:26:00.52 Don't get hung up on what other people think about you, 00:26:00.56\00:26:05.03 instead, focus on the one who matters most, God. 00:26:05.06\00:26:11.00 God shaped you and equipped you and in Christ has given you 00:26:11.03\00:26:17.11 everything you need to be successful. 00:26:17.14\00:26:19.64 Would you like to get to achieve more in life?
