This is Bundaberg, a city in Southeast Queensland 00:00:24.65\00:00:28.26 almost 400 km north of Brisbane. 00:00:28.29\00:00:31.39 The city boasts a population of over 70,000 people 00:00:31.43\00:00:35.73 and is well-known for a variety of different reasons. 00:00:35.76\00:00:39.23 Including some of the grand old historic buildings that 00:00:39.27\00:00:43.74 beautify and grace its center. 00:00:43.77\00:00:45.84 Bundaberg was named by surveyor John Carlton Thompson 00:00:45.87\00:00:51.35 and its name is loosely derived from the name of one of the 00:00:51.38\00:00:55.35 local Aboriginal tribes. The traditional owners of the 00:00:55.38\00:00:59.12 area were the terrible Umbanda. 00:00:59.15\00:01:02.06 The first European to visit the area was an escaped convict 00:01:02.09\00:01:06.63 from the Morton Bay Penial Settlement, later Bundaberg was 00:01:06.66\00:01:11.53 populated by pastoral squatters who established sheep stations 00:01:11.57\00:01:16.10 in the area. 00:01:16.14\00:01:17.47 The city was established in 1867 on the northern banks 00:01:17.51\00:01:21.84 of the Barnard River which is still spanned today 00:01:21.88\00:01:25.15 by a magnificent 100 year-old metal-truss road bridge. 00:01:25.18\00:01:30.22 Most of the early settlers made their living from the timber 00:01:30.25\00:01:34.46 in the area but sugar later became the lucrative 00:01:34.49\00:01:38.36 business venture too. Bundaberg is known to be the home 00:01:38.39\00:01:42.66 town of several known Australians, but arguably 00:01:42.70\00:01:47.24 the most famous son of Bundaberg is Bert Hinkler. 00:01:47.27\00:01:51.44 There's a large polished monument of him that holds 00:01:51.47\00:01:56.21 quite a place in Bus Park in downtown Bundaberg. 00:01:56.24\00:01:59.88 Dubbed as the Australian lone Eagle, Hinkler was an aviator 00:01:59.91\00:02:05.52 inventor, and designer. 00:02:05.55\00:02:07.16 And the first person to fly solo from England to Australia 00:02:07.19\00:02:11.49 and also the first person to fly solo across the 00:02:11.53\00:02:15.50 Southern Atlantic Ocean. 00:02:15.53\00:02:17.00 In many ways, he wasn't afraid to explore unchartered 00:02:17.03\00:02:21.57 territory and go where no one else had gone before 00:02:21.60\00:02:25.41 despite the inherent risks and dangers. 00:02:25.44\00:02:28.34 Join us this week as we take a look at the remarkable life 00:02:28.38\00:02:33.11 of Bert Hinkler and others who had a similar focus 00:02:33.15\00:02:36.58 and drive. As we consider their adventurous spirit, dedication, 00:02:36.62\00:02:41.89 and passion, we may be inspired to question how we can 00:02:41.92\00:02:46.36 better live lives of purpose and significance. 00:02:46.39\00:02:49.93 Bert Hinkler was born on the 8th of December1892 00:03:01.08\00:03:06.51 at Woodburn Villa, Gavin Street in Bundaberg, Queensland. 00:03:06.55\00:03:11.45 His father was a mill worker and Hinkler grew up in a 00:03:11.49\00:03:16.16 modest home, he was born Herbert John Louie Hinkler 00:03:16.19\00:03:21.80 but the name was shortened to the much easier nickname 00:03:21.83\00:03:25.50 of Bert. In January 1898 young Bert was enrolled 00:03:25.53\00:03:31.67 as student number 685 at North Bundaberg State School you can 00:03:31.71\00:03:37.41 still find his name on the school admission register. 00:03:37.45\00:03:40.08 Bert was a good student but his mind was often outside 00:03:40.12\00:03:45.59 in the sky. As a child Hinkler was fascinated by flight 00:03:45.62\00:03:51.09 and would spend hours watching Ibis in flight near a 00:03:51.13\00:03:55.30 local lake. By the age of 19 Hinkler had built his 00:03:55.33\00:04:00.40 first flying machine, a man carrying glider, 00:04:00.44\00:04:04.21 each rib and spare was skillfully handcrafted in his 00:04:04.24\00:04:09.64 backyard workshop. 00:04:09.68\00:04:11.01 In 1911 and 1912 Hinkler used horse-drawn carts to transport 00:04:11.05\00:04:18.19 his glider to the nearby beach, the beach which sits inside the 00:04:18.22\00:04:22.62 Monroe Poe Conservation Park is the nesting ground for the 00:04:22.66\00:04:26.53 largest nesting population of loggerhead turtles 00:04:26.56\00:04:29.86 in the South-Pacific Ocean. 00:04:29.90\00:04:31.90 Hinkler shared the beach with the turtles as it was the 00:04:31.93\00:04:36.10 ideal place to test his new flying machines to see if 00:04:36.14\00:04:40.24 they were aerodynamic and worked correctly. 00:04:40.28\00:04:43.14 The flimsy glider was an ironing board serving as a cockpit 00:04:43.18\00:04:47.92 took to the air with him aboard and launched young Herbert 00:04:47.95\00:04:51.69 John Louie Hinkler into the exciting and developing world 00:04:51.72\00:04:56.12 of aviation. After the successful test flight 00:04:56.16\00:05:00.06 of his gliders, Hinkler set off for England in 1914 00:05:00.10\00:05:04.33 where he worked for the Sopwith Company. 00:05:04.37\00:05:07.30 Sopwith manufactured aircraft that were mainly used by 00:05:07.34\00:05:11.84 the military and both the Royal Naval Air Service 00:05:11.87\00:05:15.34 and the Royal Flying Corp later they were used in the 00:05:15.38\00:05:19.11 Royal Air Force during World War I. 00:05:19.15\00:05:21.68 When World War I broke out, Hinkler served with the 00:05:21.72\00:05:26.42 Royal Naval Air Service as an Arial gunner and an observer 00:05:26.45\00:05:31.23 responsible for manning air- craft guns and performing 00:05:31.26\00:05:34.66 in reconnaissance during a mission. 00:05:34.70\00:05:36.93 Hinkler was deployed to work in Belgium and France 00:05:36.97\00:05:40.97 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal 00:05:41.00\00:05:44.61 for his work there. 00:05:44.64\00:05:45.97 Then in 1918, he was posted to the 28th squadron of the RAF 00:05:46.01\00:05:52.08 where he served as a pilot in Italy. 00:05:52.11\00:05:55.15 Hinkler was lorded as an exceptional mathematician 00:05:55.18\00:05:59.19 and inventor by his peers, in fact, he is known to have 00:05:59.22\00:06:03.36 invented a significant number of aviation instruments which 00:06:03.39\00:06:07.56 were in use up until World War II. 00:06:07.60\00:06:10.17 After World War I in 1919, Hinkler got a job working as a 00:06:10.20\00:06:16.57 Test Pilot for AV Roe in South Hampton, 00:06:16.60\00:06:19.61 the company manufactured and designed aircraft which were 00:06:19.64\00:06:23.91 used by the military in both World Wars. 00:06:23.95\00:06:27.02 Hinkler bought a quaint English home in Thornhill Estates 00:06:27.05\00:06:31.65 South Hampton, he named the home Mon Repos to celebrate 00:06:31.69\00:06:36.49 and remember the beach where he first learned to fly. 00:06:36.52\00:06:40.10 Around the time that Hinkler moved to South Hampton 00:06:40.13\00:06:43.67 the Australian government offered a 10,000 pound prize 00:06:43.70\00:06:48.07 to the first pilot, what was able to successfully fly an 00:06:48.10\00:06:52.47 aircraft from England to Australia. Hinkler threw his hat 00:06:52.51\00:06:56.75 into the ring, but his aircraft ended up crashing in Europe 00:06:56.78\00:07:00.75 during a violent storm. 00:07:00.78\00:07:02.28 In 1921 Hinkler shipped this small Avro baby 00:07:02.32\00:07:08.12 one of the smaller aircraft manufacturers to fly AV Roe 00:07:08.16\00:07:11.63 to Sydney. The aircraft was topped off with fuel 00:07:11.66\00:07:15.66 and then flown over 1,300 km non-stop to his hometown of 00:07:15.70\00:07:21.84 Bundaberg in Queensland. The 1920s proved to be 00:07:21.87\00:07:26.57 a fruitful time of adventure for Hinkler, 00:07:26.61\00:07:28.98 it was during these years that he took on numerous 00:07:29.01\00:07:32.61 aviation projects and set a significant number of 00:07:32.65\00:07:36.35 world records but Hinkler's most notable achievement 00:07:36.38\00:07:40.22 was his solo flight between England and Australia in 1928. 00:07:40.26\00:07:45.79 It was the first solo flight between the two countries 00:07:45.83\00:07:50.00 and was a feat that was applauded on both sides 00:07:50.03\00:07:52.83 of the world. 00:07:52.87\00:07:55.37 Hinkler departed England on the 7th of February 1928 00:07:55.40\00:08:00.24 and arrived in Darwin, Australia on 5 p.m. on the 2nd of February 00:08:00.28\00:08:06.25 there were plenty of challenges and daring escapes along the 00:08:06.28\00:08:10.75 way. After the first few legs of his journey he arrived in 00:08:10.79\00:08:15.82 Indonesia and spent some time in the heart of a local resident 00:08:15.86\00:08:19.09 battling mosquitos and unable to sleep. 00:08:19.13\00:08:22.56 When he departed from Indonesia he had a full load of fuel 00:08:22.60\00:08:27.24 and maneuvered a tricky ascent over the mountains before 00:08:27.27\00:08:31.17 he flew nonstop over the ocean between Indonesia and Australia 00:08:31.21\00:08:35.61 for roughly 11 hours 00:08:35.64\00:08:37.51 His first sight of Australia was Bathurst Island 00:08:37.55\00:08:41.98 and it led to celebration in the cockpit, 00:08:42.02\00:08:44.82 he was given a hero's Welcoming Darwin after an exhausting 00:08:44.85\00:08:49.46 but ground-breaking 18,000 km flight. 00:08:49.49\00:08:54.93 He later flew to Brisbane where swarms of well-wishers 00:08:54.96\00:08:58.53 thronged him at his plane. 00:08:58.57\00:09:00.47 He was welcomed with a triumphal parade through the city in an 00:09:00.50\00:09:04.94 Armstrong Siddeley open vehicle which is being immaculately 00:09:04.97\00:09:09.04 restored and is on display in Bundaberg Hinkler Hall 00:09:09.08\00:09:13.15 of Aviation today. 00:09:13.18\00:09:14.92 After Brisbane Hinkler continued his record-breaking flight 00:09:14.95\00:09:20.19 on to his hometown of Bundaberg. 00:09:20.22\00:09:22.39 Initially his flight between England and Australia 00:09:22.42\00:09:26.59 didn't make any headlines but when he reached India 00:09:26.63\00:09:31.10 the media interest rammed up, he was nicknamed 00:09:31.13\00:09:34.64 The Hustling Hinkler by one newspaper and became the subject 00:09:34.67\00:09:38.97 of a popular song titled Hustling Hinkler up in the Sky. 00:09:39.01\00:09:43.71 Hustling Hinkler up in the sky fair or windy, he's flying high. 00:09:43.75\00:09:50.79 Hinkler continued to gather accolades throughout the course 00:09:50.82\00:09:55.32 of the1920's, he picked up two Britannica trophies, a gold 00:09:55.36\00:10:00.93 medal from Federation Aéronautique Internationale, 00:10:00.96\00:10:04.67 a second Oswald Watt gold medal and an air force cross 00:10:04.70\00:10:09.44 for the finest Ariel exploit of the year. 00:10:09.47\00:10:13.07 Hinkler's life is interesting because it is a study and 00:10:21.78\00:10:26.25 passion, focus, and drive. He was a man who had a genuine 00:10:26.29\00:10:31.63 interest in aeronautics at a very young age and he 00:10:31.66\00:10:35.43 channeled that interest into a lifelong mission that ultimately 00:10:35.46\00:10:39.57 impacted the aviation industry in both big and little ways. 00:10:39.60\00:10:44.51 Then in 1931 Hinkler performed his most amazing feat 00:10:44.54\00:10:50.78 He flew to de Havilland Puss Moth is a three-seat lightweight 00:10:50.81\00:10:55.12 monoplane from Canada to New York and then on to Jamaica 00:10:55.15\00:11:00.12 non-stop clocking a record breaking 2,400 km. 00:11:00.16\00:11:05.99 But that wasn't enough of a conquest, he then took the 00:11:06.03\00:11:10.50 Moth from Jamaica to Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, and then across 00:11:10.53\00:11:15.87 the South Atlantic to Africa. The leg of the journey between 00:11:15.90\00:11:20.84 South America and Africa was undertaken in extremely bad 00:11:20.88\00:11:25.38 weather. Yet, despite the gale force winds and poor visibility 00:11:25.41\00:11:30.39 Hinkler managed to complete the journey. 00:11:30.42\00:11:33.36 Then from West Africa, he flew on to London, 00:11:33.39\00:11:37.23 when he completed the journey he was awarded a slew of medals, 00:11:37.26\00:11:42.36 trophies and accolades. His flight had been the first 00:11:42.40\00:11:47.44 solo flight across the South Atlantic and at the time 00:11:47.47\00:11:51.44 Hinkler was only the second person to cross the Atlantic 00:11:51.47\00:11:55.14 solo after Charles Lindberg accomplished the feat in 1927. 00:11:55.18\00:12:00.18 In 1932 after a decade of exploration and breaking 00:12:00.22\00:12:05.99 barriers in the field of aviation, Hinkler married 00:12:06.02\00:12:09.62 Catherine Rome, he was 39 at the time and still full of 00:12:09.66\00:12:14.10 energy and drive continually drawing up plans for his next 00:12:14.13\00:12:19.03 grand adventure. 00:12:19.07\00:12:20.80 Not long after he got married Hinkler was also game 00:12:20.84\00:12:24.97 pushing the limits of aviation and breaking new frontiers. 00:12:25.01\00:12:28.84 This time he set out to break a flying record between 00:12:28.88\00:12:33.11 England and Australia which was held by CWA Scott, 00:12:33.15\00:12:38.19 the record was eight days and 20 hours and Hinkler was 00:12:38.22\00:12:44.03 determined to do better. 00:12:44.06\00:12:45.56 He left London air park in Hanworth England 00:12:45.59\00:12:49.13 on the 7th of January 1933 in his de Havilland Puss Moth, 00:12:49.16\00:12:54.70 he wasn't heard from again until his body was discovered in 00:12:54.74\00:12:59.61 the Tuscan Mountains in Italy. 00:12:59.64\00:13:01.84 His plane had apparently crashed into the mountains in Italy 00:13:01.88\00:13:06.72 after his departure from London. He was given a state funeral 00:13:06.75\00:13:10.95 and was buried with full military honors by order of 00:13:10.99\00:13:14.56 Benito Mussolini in the Protestant Cimitero degli Allori 00:13:14.59\00:13:18.73 in Florence. 00:13:18.79\00:13:20.16 After his death, countries around the world took steps 00:13:20.20\00:13:25.33 to honor his memory. In Italy a monument was erected 00:13:25.37\00:13:29.47 to his memory by Airotino Aero Club. 00:13:29.50\00:13:32.84 In England several roads and parks were named after him 00:13:32.87\00:13:36.68 and a monument was erected to him. 00:13:36.71\00:13:39.71 In Australia, The Federal Elective of Hinkler in 00:13:39.75\00:13:43.25 Queensland was named after him. 00:13:43.28\00:13:45.72 In 1983 his house in South Hampton, England was saved 00:13:45.75\00:13:51.76 from demolition and relocated brick by brick here to the 00:13:51.79\00:13:56.56 Bundaberg Botanical Gardens which has since served as a 00:13:56.60\00:14:00.84 Historical Museum. 00:14:00.87\00:14:02.24 Bundaberg also erected a beautiful seven-meter-high 00:14:02.27\00:14:07.08 monument on The Hummock, the highest point in the district 00:14:07.11\00:14:10.98 overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the sugar cane fields, 00:14:11.01\00:14:15.18 and the city. There is also an aeronautics museum 00:14:15.22\00:14:20.22 The Hinkler Hall of Aviation located in the Bundaberg 00:14:20.26\00:14:24.43 Botanic Gardens that is dedicated to the 00:14:24.46\00:14:27.60 Pioneer Aviator and Innovator. 00:14:27.63\00:14:29.93 The museum which was opened in 2008 houses a collection of 00:14:29.96\00:14:35.44 five aircraft that played significant part in 00:14:35.47\00:14:39.27 Hinkler's career, these include a reconstructed glider 00:14:39.31\00:14:44.05 that is the replica of the first glider that Hinkler built and 00:14:44.08\00:14:48.22 tested out at Monroe Poe Beach. 00:14:48.25\00:14:50.65 Then there's Hinkler's original Avro-Baby, 00:14:50.69\00:14:54.16 he acquired this machine and made two record-breaking 00:14:54.19\00:14:58.53 solo flights in the aircraft. 00:14:58.56\00:15:00.26 There's also a replica of Hinkler's Avro Avian, 00:15:00.30\00:15:04.57 the original aircraft is on display in the Queensland Museum 00:15:04.60\00:15:08.44 in Brisbane. 00:15:08.47\00:15:09.80 Hinkler had considerable experience with this aircraft 00:15:09.84\00:15:13.07 he flew it in several air races in 1926 and 1927, 00:15:13.11\00:15:18.41 however, it was significantly modified over the period 00:15:18.45\00:15:22.52 for his much-celebrated and ground-breaking solo flight 00:15:22.55\00:15:27.09 between England and Australia in 1928. 00:15:27.12\00:15:30.73 The museum also houses a Hinkler Ibis, 00:15:30.76\00:15:34.46 the Ibis is a small two-seater wooden amphibious mono-plane 00:15:34.50\00:15:39.37 that Hinkler designed and built while he was working in the 00:15:39.40\00:15:42.77 United Kingdom and there is a reconstructed 00:15:42.80\00:15:45.97 de Havilland Puss Moth, Hinkler flew the Moth during his 00:15:46.01\00:15:50.21 his trip from Canada to New York and then through South America 00:15:50.25\00:15:54.32 and across the South Atlantic to England. 00:15:54.35\00:15:57.39 He also flew a Moth on his final flight from England to 00:15:57.42\00:16:01.96 Australia. Regretfully as we've noted, he didn't make it, 00:16:01.99\00:16:05.96 he and the plane met an untimely end in Italy. 00:16:05.99\00:16:10.37 There are many things that come to mind when you think about 00:16:10.40\00:16:14.67 Bert Hinkler, he was a pioneer, an innovator, an inventor, 00:16:14.70\00:16:20.04 and an aviator, but perhaps most striking of all, 00:16:20.08\00:16:24.68 he was a man who was driven to accomplish his goals in life. 00:16:24.71\00:16:30.05 Much like Bert Hinkler's unabated passion and zeal for 00:16:30.09\00:16:34.36 all things aeronautical, the Bible profiles the lives of men 00:16:34.39\00:16:39.36 and women whose drives were driven by a singular zeal 00:16:39.39\00:16:43.60 for their mission in life. 00:16:43.63\00:16:45.23 Purpose in life is extremely important, every human being 00:16:45.27\00:16:50.57 on the planet craves a sense of purpose and significance 00:16:50.61\00:16:53.88 in their lives. A sense of they are more than hamsters 00:16:53.91\00:16:57.68 on a wheel, a sense that their lives are making a difference 00:16:57.71\00:17:01.88 in the world around them. 00:17:01.92\00:17:03.69 One of the most mission-focused and driven individuals 00:17:03.72\00:17:07.76 in the Bible was Nehemiah, an important government official 00:17:07.82\00:17:12.69 in the court of the Persian Empire. 00:17:12.73\00:17:14.53 Nehemiah was a man who was driven by a single purpose 00:17:14.56\00:17:19.00 and he worked hard to achieve it. 00:17:19.03\00:17:21.64 There are a number of things we can learn from 00:17:21.67\00:17:24.74 Nehemiah's life that will help us to understand how we can 00:17:24.77\00:17:29.98 discover and fulfill our own purpose in life. 00:17:30.01\00:17:33.38 So, let's take a look at the life of Nehemiah and the work 00:17:33.42\00:17:37.92 he accomplished. 00:17:37.95\00:17:39.49 The Bible Book of Nehemiah opens with a visit between 00:17:39.52\00:17:43.66 old friends who are as close as brothers. 00:17:43.69\00:17:46.63 Nehemiah was going about his life at the royal court 00:17:46.66\00:17:50.67 generally happy and fulfilled but with an eye on what 00:17:50.70\00:17:55.07 was happening back in Palestine. 00:17:55.10\00:17:57.21 A group of Jews had relocated to Palestine in the hope of 00:17:57.24\00:18:01.98 restoring Jerusalem and re- establishing the Jewish Nation 00:18:02.01\00:18:06.21 70 years after they had been taken captive by the 00:18:06.25\00:18:10.72 Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar. 00:18:10.75\00:18:12.99 The work was hard and the terrain uncharted 00:18:13.02\00:18:16.83 and the visit that Nehemiah had from his old friend Hananiah 00:18:16.86\00:18:21.30 included a report on the progress of the group 00:18:21.33\00:18:24.80 that'd returned home. Nehemiah's heart was with his people 00:18:24.83\00:18:29.57 though active in the Royal Court of Persia, he longed to see his 00:18:29.60\00:18:34.11 native land restored. 00:18:34.14\00:18:36.01 Hananiah' s visit alerted Nehemiah to a need in his 00:18:36.04\00:18:40.05 community at home, the walls of the city were broken down 00:18:40.08\00:18:44.09 and they needed help rebuilding them again 00:18:44.12\00:18:46.76 Nehemiah's love for his people led him to respond to that need. 00:18:46.79\00:18:51.73 The first principle the Bible teaches us when it comes to 00:18:51.76\00:18:56.67 understanding a quest with purpose is that the most 00:18:56.70\00:19:00.17 fulfilling tasks in life often revolve around meeting the needs 00:19:00.20\00:19:05.34 of those around us. 00:19:05.37\00:19:06.71 If you want to live a life of purpose and fulfillment 00:19:06.74\00:19:10.25 look around you to see and understand the 00:19:10.28\00:19:14.62 needs of your community. 00:19:14.68\00:19:16.18 After his friend Hananiah left, Nehemiah was deeply affected 00:19:16.22\00:19:21.72 and couldn't stop thinking about his people and the turmoil 00:19:21.76\00:19:25.33 they were in. At that time in history, a city without walls 00:19:25.36\00:19:30.50 was defenseless and vulnerable to attack. 00:19:30.53\00:19:33.60 His concern for his countrymen began to weigh heavily on him 00:19:33.64\00:19:38.67 and a cloud of sadness settled over him. 00:19:38.71\00:19:41.24 Since he was constantly in the presence of the king 00:19:41.28\00:19:44.65 the monarch notices his trusted servant's sadness and inquired 00:19:44.68\00:19:48.88 about the cause. Well, at first Nehemiah was nervous 00:19:48.92\00:19:53.12 he wasn't supposed to show emotion especially sadness 00:19:53.15\00:19:57.19 around the king but then he relented and told the king 00:19:57.23\00:20:01.33 his dilemma. The king generously offered to provide the necessary 00:20:01.36\00:20:06.94 resources for the project and offered Nehemiah 00:20:06.97\00:20:10.41 a leave of absence to complete it. 00:20:10.44\00:20:13.51 At that point Nehemiah found himself not only inspired by 00:20:13.54\00:20:18.68 a vision but also empowered and equipped to make it a reality. 00:20:18.71\00:20:23.92 The second principle of the Bible teaches us about mission 00:20:23.95\00:20:28.02 and purpose is the importance of being equipped. 00:20:28.06\00:20:32.16 In Nehemiah's case, he needed physical resources and also 00:20:32.19\00:20:37.60 time off work to make his vision a reality. 00:20:37.63\00:20:40.84 In other cases equipping our- selves to meet felt needs 00:20:40.87\00:20:46.11 in our communities might mean learning a new skill, 00:20:46.14\00:20:50.35 partnering with people who have a similar vision and a diverse 00:20:50.38\00:20:54.08 skill set or finding financial resources. 00:20:54.12\00:20:57.62 What other tips can we pick up from the Bible 00:20:57.65\00:21:01.29 about fulfilling our commission and purpose? 00:21:01.32\00:21:03.99 Well, once Nehemiah received the king's permission and 00:21:04.03\00:21:08.56 resources to re-build the walls he made his way to Jerusalem. 00:21:08.60\00:21:12.67 The first thing Nehemiah did was tour the city to inspect 00:21:12.70\00:21:17.74 the extent of the damage. 00:21:17.77\00:21:19.44 The walls were broken down in several places and the work 00:21:19.47\00:21:23.85 looked challenging but not impossible, then Nehemiah 00:21:23.88\00:21:28.68 assessed the situation before him identified the problems, 00:21:28.72\00:21:32.82 and came up with a workable plan. 00:21:32.85\00:21:35.72 He then turned his attention to gather the support 00:21:35.76\00:21:39.86 of the people and turning his plans into action. 00:21:39.89\00:21:43.60 He made sure that news spread quickly throughout the city 00:21:43.63\00:21:47.34 that the walls of Jerusalem were going to be re-built 00:21:47.44\00:21:50.71 Nehemiah encouraged the people that the task could be achieved 00:21:50.74\00:21:55.64 and united them to work with him to make it happen. 00:21:55.68\00:21:59.18 In no time at all Nehemiah had plenty of people to help him 00:21:59.21\00:22:03.69 he soon had everything organized and ready to go. 00:22:03.72\00:22:07.46 But his plan didn't just happen, it wasn't created on the fly, 00:22:07.49\00:22:11.83 at the core of Nehemiah's planning was prayer, 00:22:11.86\00:22:16.23 he made prayer the center of this plan and his plan was a 00:22:16.26\00:22:21.87 splendid one. He divided up the wall into sections 00:22:21.90\00:22:25.41 giving one portion to one group or family, and another portion 00:22:25.44\00:22:29.78 to another group or family, this way everybody 00:22:29.81\00:22:33.68 had something to do and was responsible for some particular 00:22:33.72\00:22:38.15 part of the wall. With so many people working the wall began 00:22:38.19\00:22:42.52 to take shape. Some mixed mortar, others lifted stones, 00:22:42.56\00:22:46.80 others carefully measured the distances to ensure that 00:22:46.83\00:22:50.50 each stone was set in the right place. 00:22:50.53\00:22:53.34 Women and children brought food and water to sustain the workers 00:22:53.37\00:22:57.81 then, there were those who checked the levels, 00:22:57.84\00:23:00.98 they used a plumb bob or plummet to establish exact 00:23:01.01\00:23:05.21 vertical lines and ensure the structure was centered. 00:23:05.25\00:23:09.02 This was vitally important because a few degrees out of 00:23:09.05\00:23:13.39 plumb and the whole wall could come tumbling down. 00:23:13.42\00:23:17.09 Nehemiah's plan, his strategy worked splendidly, 00:23:17.13\00:23:21.96 with all this combined and well-coordinated effort 00:23:22.00\00:23:25.83 the walls of the city were soon going up fast. 00:23:25.87\00:23:28.84 Day by day the wall rose higher and higher, more and more 00:23:28.87\00:23:33.74 sections were joined closing the gaps between. 00:23:33.78\00:23:36.95 In just 55 days, less than two months this great wall was 00:23:36.98\00:23:42.58 completed all because one man had vision, faith, and courage. 00:23:42.62\00:23:49.39 So, in summary, three important tips that we can glean from 00:23:49.42\00:23:54.56 the Bible when it comes to formulating a quest and purpose 00:23:54.60\00:23:58.80 for our lives. 00:23:58.83\00:24:00.44 Number 1. 00:24:00.47\00:24:02.24 Be it our families or communities, serving others 00:24:08.31\00:24:13.58 is one of the most meaningful missions in life that we can 00:24:13.62\00:24:17.39 ever have. 00:24:17.42\00:24:18.75 Number 2. 00:24:18.79\00:24:20.19 Number 3. 00:24:28.73\00:24:30.60 The Bible tells us in Proverbs 29:18 00:24:41.14\00:24:45.61 Having a clear vision and purpose in life is an important 00:24:50.02\00:24:54.26 part of living a fulfilled and meaningful lives. 00:24:54.29\00:24:58.33 Jesus often spoke of his own mission in life, in John 10:10 00:24:58.36\00:25:04.27 Jesus said... 00:25:04.30\00:25:05.87 Jesus was always engaged in serving others and we too 00:25:12.57\00:25:18.38 can find abundant life when it is spent in a life of service 00:25:18.41\00:25:23.32 for others. 00:25:23.35\00:25:24.69 Bert Hinkler's passion was flying, he allowed it 00:25:24.72\00:25:28.56 to drive him and he made a significant contribution 00:25:28.59\00:25:32.23 to the field of aviation. 00:25:32.26\00:25:33.86 Jesus' passion was and still is, people, He allows His love 00:25:33.90\00:25:40.04 for people to drive Him and this love is the greatest gift 00:25:40.07\00:25:46.31 we have ever been given, salvation, eternal life... 00:25:46.34\00:25:51.21 Each of us was created to live a life of purpose 00:25:51.25\00:25:55.82 a life much like the life of Jesus, dedicated to service 00:25:55.85\00:26:00.46 and driven by a love for people. 00:26:00.49\00:26:03.79 When you accept Jesus into your heart, 00:26:03.83\00:26:06.63 your life will be filled with His spirit and His spirit 00:26:06.66\00:26:11.23 will inspire you to be a blessing to others. 00:26:11.27\00:26:14.40 If you would like to give God a chance today, 00:26:14.44\00:26:19.67 to give you a life of meaning and purpose, 00:26:19.71\00:26:22.41 if you would like to let Him give you a new vision and 00:26:22.44\00:26:25.45 commission for your life, then, I'd like to recommend 00:26:25.48\00:26:28.98 the free gift we have for all our Incredible Journey viewers 00:26:29.02\00:26:33.19 today.
