Everybody loves penguins, they're amazing birds. 00:00:39.87\00:00:44.24 They're not quite like any bird you've seen in your backyard 00:00:44.31\00:00:47.98 or in the park. They're birds that don't fly, they're 00:00:48.01\00:00:53.11 flockers. While other birds have wings for flying 00:00:53.15\00:00:55.55 penguins have flippers to help them swim in the water. 00:00:55.58\00:00:59.55 They spend half their time on land and half in the ocean. 00:00:59.59\00:01:03.99 They're highly suitable for the marine environment, 00:01:04.03\00:01:07.60 they're excellent swimmers and can dive to great depths 00:01:07.63\00:01:11.73 to search for food. Some to over 300 meters. 00:01:11.77\00:01:16.50 Their shape and design enable extreme agility underwater. 00:01:16.54\00:01:21.44 The feet and tail act as a rudder while the flippers 00:01:21.48\00:01:25.45 act as propellers. They also have a waterproof coat of short 00:01:25.48\00:01:29.92 overlapping feathers and a well-developed layer of fat 00:01:29.95\00:01:33.79 for insulation. There are 18 species of penguins 00:01:33.82\00:01:38.19 and all of them with just one exception are found in the 00:01:38.23\00:01:42.10 southern hemisphere. 00:01:42.13\00:01:43.47 Some of them are especially fascinating. 00:01:43.50\00:01:47.14 King penguins are the second largest species measuring 00:01:55.68\00:01:59.68 up to one meter tall, they're eye-catching with a vivid 00:01:59.71\00:02:03.69 splash of orangey-yellow markings to contrast the 00:02:03.72\00:02:07.46 black and white. King penguins incubate their eggs 00:02:07.49\00:02:11.73 on their feet. Once the chicks are big enough, 00:02:11.76\00:02:15.16 they form crèches that include many of thousands of chicks. 00:02:15.20\00:02:19.47 At this stage, chicks wear a thick coat of brown down. 00:02:19.50\00:02:24.11 King penguins are great communicators... 00:02:24.14\00:02:27.58 When they return from a foraging trip at sea, they can find 00:02:27.61\00:02:31.88 and identify their chicks in a crowd of 50,000 young penguins 00:02:31.91\00:02:36.35 just by listening to their voices. 00:02:36.38\00:02:39.25 Gentoo penguins are easily recognizable with their 00:02:39.29\00:02:43.59 orange bill, white eye patches, peachy pink feet and a long 00:02:43.63\00:02:48.56 fan-tail that sways when they waddle. They're easy to hear too 00:02:48.60\00:02:53.20 with a loud trumpeting honk. At sea, Gentoo's are known for 00:02:53.23\00:02:58.91 their speed, they're the fastest of all penguins 00:02:58.94\00:03:02.38 in the water, reaching up to 36 kilometers per hour. 00:03:02.41\00:03:06.31 Gentoo's are social breeders building their pebble nests 00:03:06.35\00:03:12.09 in colonies. Pebbles are a Gentoo's prized possession... 00:03:12.12\00:03:17.09 with the right stone a male can woo a female and because 00:03:17.13\00:03:22.30 of this, stones are intensely guarded and the subject of 00:03:22.33\00:03:26.43 many neighborly disputes. Couples are monogamous 00:03:26.47\00:03:30.67 and infidelity is a big no-no with cheating penguins 00:03:30.71\00:03:35.68 being punished with exile from the colony. 00:03:35.71\00:03:39.61 Rock-hopper penguins are named after the habit of 00:03:39.65\00:03:46.35 leaping across rocky terrain. They're one of the more 00:03:46.39\00:03:50.43 athletic penguin species on land but they are still more 00:03:50.46\00:03:54.13 at home in the water and they're well-known for their 00:03:54.16\00:03:57.87 spikey hairdo's. 00:03:57.90\00:03:59.33 Macaroni penguins are famous for their extravagant yellow 00:03:59.37\00:04:04.44 plumes, their distinctive golden crest and bright 00:04:04.47\00:04:08.64 plumage led to the name macaroni which refers to a 00:04:08.68\00:04:13.62 man with flamboyant fashion sense. 00:04:13.65\00:04:16.48 Chin-strap penguins are named for the narrow black band 00:04:16.52\00:04:20.69 under their heads which extends from ear to ear just below 00:04:20.72\00:04:25.09 the chin and cheeks. They're found mainly on the 00:04:25.13\00:04:28.13 Antarctic Peninsula and on islands in the South Atlantic 00:04:28.16\00:04:31.60 Ocean. Which brings us now to one of the most fascinating 00:04:31.63\00:04:36.50 and loved of all the different kinds of penguins and a long way 00:04:36.54\00:04:42.11 from the chin-straps in Antarctica. 00:04:42.14\00:04:44.18 Only along the shores of Southern Australia 00:04:48.25\00:04:50.95 and New Zealand can you find the rare and wonderful site 00:04:50.99\00:04:54.56 the smallest penguins in the world Ferry penguins 00:04:54.59\00:04:59.26 also known as Little penguins. Now to give you an idea 00:04:59.29\00:05:04.30 of their size, this tiny penguin is only 30 to 40 centimeters 00:05:04.33\00:05:09.57 tall, just a little more than the length of the ruler 00:05:09.60\00:05:12.97 you used at school and weighs just one kilogram 00:05:13.01\00:05:16.88 that's the weight of a one liter bottle of water or a pack 00:05:16.91\00:05:20.72 of six small apples. These little penguins are the only 00:05:20.75\00:05:26.25 penguins in the world that don't wear the traditional 00:05:26.29\00:05:29.16 black and white suits...their coat is of dark blue feathers 00:05:29.19\00:05:33.70 and their bellies are white. These charming little penguins 00:05:33.73\00:05:38.17 spend about 80% of their time at sea swimming and foraging 00:05:38.20\00:05:43.20 for food. During the breeding season they return to their 00:05:43.24\00:05:47.38 nesting burrows on land, here they mate, raise their chicks 00:05:47.41\00:05:52.11 molt and take a break from their moths at seal 00:05:52.15\00:05:55.92 All adult penguins molt at the end of the breeding season 00:05:55.95\00:06:00.72 from February to April, all their feathers are shed 00:06:00.76\00:06:04.96 and replaced over a period of two or three weeks. 00:06:04.99\00:06:08.36 During the molt the new feathers aren't waterproof 00:06:08.40\00:06:12.57 and so the birds need to stay on land. 00:06:12.60\00:06:15.74 The nightly ritual of penguins coming ashore enchants 00:06:15.77\00:06:20.61 thousands of people who flock to the coastline to watch 00:06:20.64\00:06:24.65 these small sea-birds surfing like a torpedo in on the waves 00:06:24.68\00:06:29.88 and then they waddle up the beach to sleep in their burrows 00:06:29.92\00:06:33.82 But people aren't the only ones who eagerly watch 00:06:33.86\00:06:37.96 for the arrival of the little penguins. 00:06:37.99\00:06:40.30 One fierce introduced predator wades of swims to the islands 00:06:40.33\00:06:46.00 where the penguins live and can decimate an entire colony 00:06:46.03\00:06:50.14 very quickly. 00:06:50.17\00:06:51.81 Join me as we follow the dramatic story of a colony of 00:06:51.84\00:06:57.38 little penguins that was dangerously threatened 00:06:57.41\00:07:00.95 with extinction and the unlikely hero that saved them. 00:07:00.98\00:07:05.12 This heartwarming story carries a special message for us today 00:07:05.15\00:07:09.56 it'll inspire you and encourage you. 00:07:09.59\00:07:13.13 Warrnambool is a lovely town on the southwestern coast of 00:07:30.35\00:07:34.45 Victoria 260 kilometers from Melbourne at the end of the 00:07:34.48\00:07:39.35 scenic Great Ocean Road. This iconic road was built 00:07:39.39\00:07:43.99 by the return World War I soldiers between 1919 and 1932. 00:07:44.03\00:07:49.63 and passes some of Australia's most dramatic and iconic 00:07:49.66\00:07:53.90 coastline including the magnificent Twelve Apostles. 00:07:53.94\00:07:58.37 The first documented European exploration of the Warrnambool 00:07:58.41\00:08:02.88 area was by Lt. James Brown, a Scottish Explorer 00:08:02.91\00:08:07.92 who sailed the Lady Nelson along the coast in December 00:08:07.95\00:08:12.22 of 1800. Next came the English Navigator Matthew Flinders 00:08:12.25\00:08:17.83 in the investigator and the French Explorer Nicholas Borden. 00:08:17.86\00:08:21.40 who both sailed past Warrnambool in 1802 charting the coastline 00:08:21.43\00:08:26.74 of Australia. Today Warrnambool is home to another type of quest 00:08:26.77\00:08:32.01 The Grand Annual Spring Car Classic on the Australia 00:08:32.04\00:08:36.18 day long weekend in January. It's a 40-lap race on a 00:08:36.21\00:08:39.98 dirt track which attracts over 100 Australian and International 00:08:40.02\00:08:45.02 drivers. The city is also known as the finishing point 00:08:45.05\00:08:49.26 of the Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic Cycle Race, 00:08:49.29\00:08:52.79 It's the longest one-day bicycle endurance race in the world 00:08:52.83\00:08:57.07 and has been held every October since 1895. 00:08:57.10\00:09:01.77 This area was also frequented by whalers early in the 00:09:01.80\00:09:06.98 19th century. They hunted the whales almost to the point 00:09:07.01\00:09:11.11 of extinction but since whaling was outlawed in 1935, 00:09:11.15\00:09:15.58 the numbers of whales have been steadily increasing. 00:09:15.62\00:09:19.69 Southern rite whales are a variety of baleen whales 00:09:26.90\00:09:30.37 that has plates in its mouth to sieve its food rather than 00:09:30.40\00:09:34.37 teeth. They are some of the largest mammals on earth 00:09:34.40\00:09:38.04 and approximately 10,000 southern rite whales 00:09:38.07\00:09:41.71 live in the sub-Antarctic waters of the southern ocean. 00:09:41.74\00:09:46.41 These whales grow to a length of 18 meters and weigh up to 00:09:46.45\00:09:51.09 23,000 kilos, they have enormous heads and are black/dark brown 00:09:51.12\00:09:56.93 or blue in color. Tourists flock to watch these 00:09:57.09\00:10:00.40 captivating whales breaching and swimming in these waters. 00:10:00.43\00:10:04.80 In winter, the whales migrate to warmer waters around the 00:10:04.83\00:10:09.30 southern areas of Australia and almost every year between 00:10:09.34\00:10:13.41 June and September female southern rite whales 00:10:13.44\00:10:16.88 return to the waters of Warrnambool s Logan Beach 00:10:16.91\00:10:20.58 to calve. The females migrate to the nursery areas 00:10:20.62\00:10:25.25 close to the shore to bear their calves while the males 00:10:25.29\00:10:29.16 yearlings and young adults remain further out to sea. 00:10:29.19\00:10:33.33 The whales often swim within 100 meters of the shore, 00:10:33.36\00:10:37.83 they can be viewed from a specially constructed platform 00:10:37.87\00:10:41.50 in the sand dunes or from the beach. 00:10:41.54\00:10:44.07 But there is another story in Warrnambool that's happened 00:10:44.11\00:10:47.98 in Sting-ray Bay and it starts on Middle Island 00:10:48.01\00:10:51.71 a small croppy windswept outcrop lying very closed to the shore 00:10:51.75\00:10:56.65 where the first fully manned lighthouse station was built 00:10:56.69\00:11:00.09 in 1855. There's a narrow channel between the foreshore 00:11:00.12\00:11:04.93 and the island and for as long as people can remember, 00:11:04.96\00:11:08.10 a colony of little penguins nested and thrived in this 00:11:08.13\00:11:12.57 rocky uninhabited haven. 00:11:12.60\00:11:15.07 Little blue penguins are great swimmers and look as though 00:11:15.10\00:11:19.54 they are flying through the water. 00:11:19.57\00:11:21.08 As they come closer to land they surf in and project 00:11:21.11\00:11:25.31 themselves up on to the land like a small torpedo 00:11:25.35\00:11:28.88 usually landing on their feet. Once they land 00:11:28.92\00:11:32.62 they waddle from side to side with their heads down 00:11:32.65\00:11:36.02 jumping over rocks as they search for their burrow. 00:11:36.06\00:11:39.56 They usually follow the same path to their burrow or 00:11:39.59\00:11:43.50 nesting boxes each night and in Middle Island, they've created 00:11:43.53\00:11:48.30 worn paths into the soft sandstone. 00:11:48.34\00:11:51.04 The little penguins once bred in many places along the 00:11:51.07\00:11:55.84 Southern Australian coastline but introduced predators 00:11:55.88\00:11:59.71 rats, dogs, cats, and foxes preyed on the penguins 00:11:59.75\00:12:04.29 and soon destroyed many of their colonies and their habitats. 00:12:04.32\00:12:08.39 A Deacon University study of the 1999-2000 breeding season 00:12:08.42\00:12:15.23 of Middle Island found 292 burrows and 502 penguins 00:12:15.26\00:12:22.20 were coming ashore during a one hour period in January 2000. 00:12:22.24\00:12:27.94 It was believed that there were about 800 penguins nesting 00:12:27.98\00:12:32.48 on the island. The study also suggested that tourism 00:12:32.51\00:12:37.15 was having a negative impact on the penguins and raised concern 00:12:37.19\00:12:41.26 over the thread post of the colony by foxes and wild dogs. 00:12:41.29\00:12:45.36 It was about the same time during the year 2000 the 00:12:45.39\00:12:50.17 natural water currents in the channel led to an increased 00:12:50.20\00:12:53.44 sand build-up and provided access to the island during 00:12:53.47\00:12:56.84 low-tide. Suddenly the fox threat became a reality 00:12:56.87\00:13:02.41 because now at low tide, you could walk across from the 00:13:02.44\00:13:06.78 mainland to the island a distance of only 20 to 30 meters 00:13:06.82\00:13:11.05 without barely getting wet. 00:13:11.09\00:13:12.95 This meant that the hundreds of little penguins were now 00:13:12.99\00:13:17.36 at risk and in serious danger. Soon the foxes found that 00:13:17.39\00:13:22.96 during low-tide, they could cross to the island for a 00:13:23.00\00:13:26.87 penguin dinner. Now foxes are known to be thrill killers. 00:13:26.90\00:13:30.77 They kill anything they find even though they don't need it 00:13:30.81\00:13:34.91 for food. Within five years the penguin population 00:13:34.94\00:13:39.75 had decreased and in 2005 the penguin preservation project 00:13:39.78\00:13:45.35 did a survey and found that 360 penguins had been killed 00:13:45.39\00:13:50.66 by the foxes in just two nights. 00:13:50.69\00:13:53.29 The penguin colony was being decimated by the foxes 00:13:53.33\00:13:58.57 though now a few of them tend breeding pairs on the island 00:13:58.60\00:14:02.54 something had to be done to save the penguins. 00:14:02.57\00:14:06.21 In 2006 the penguin preservation project closed Middle island 00:14:06.24\00:14:13.15 to the public to protect the penguin burrows, chicks, and 00:14:13.18\00:14:17.35 eggs from human trampling. But it wasn't enough, foxes and 00:14:17.39\00:14:22.16 other predators were still reaching the island. 00:14:22.19\00:14:25.26 The penguins on Middle Island were going to be wiped out 00:14:25.29\00:14:30.17 unless a solution could be found. 00:14:30.20\00:14:32.47 And then the unlikeliest concept was suggested, a chicken farmer 00:14:32.50\00:14:37.97 by the name of Swampy Marsh came up with a plan. 00:14:38.01\00:14:41.94 Swampy Marsh had successfully used his dog as shepherds 00:14:52.05\00:14:56.66 to protect his free-range chickens from the foxes 00:14:56.69\00:14:59.73 The dogs had zealously guarded the chickens and protected them 00:14:59.76\00:15:04.73 from danger, they were dedicated and successful shepherds. 00:15:04.77\00:15:08.84 So he suggested he could try sending his dogs over to the 00:15:08.87\00:15:14.18 island as guardians to protect the little penguins 00:15:14.21\00:15:18.48 from the foxes. But they weren't just any breed of dog, 00:15:18.51\00:15:22.95 they were Maremma dogs. Now the Maremma sheepdog 00:15:22.98\00:15:27.89 is an Italian breed of sheep guarding dog native to 00:15:27.92\00:15:31.66 the mountains of Tuscan. These dogs are known for their 00:15:31.69\00:15:35.86 thick white coats, fluffy tails, and their fearlessness 00:15:35.90\00:15:40.57 in protecting and defending their flock from wolves. 00:15:40.60\00:15:44.01 In a world-first Maremma dogs were trained to protect 00:15:44.04\00:15:48.74 penguins rather than chickens or sheep, they were placed on 00:15:48.78\00:15:52.88 Middle Island to protect the penguins from foxes 00:15:52.91\00:15:56.32 during the breeding season. The first of several dogs to be 00:15:56.35\00:16:00.52 used on Middle Island was called Odd Ball and he made quite 00:16:00.56\00:16:05.63 an impact. 00:16:05.66\00:16:07.00 Our volunteer group was kind of doing penguin counting 00:16:07.03\00:16:10.80 and stuff like that and over a period of a couple of weeks 00:16:10.83\00:16:13.03 they found over 360 dead mountain birds who also live 00:16:13.07\00:16:16.50 on the island and penguins on the island. 00:16:16.54\00:16:18.14 So they spoke amongst each other they tried baiting, they tried 00:16:18.17\00:16:20.88 shooting, they tried fencing, some areas off there 00:16:20.91\00:16:23.48 just none of it worked and one of the volunteers suggested 00:16:23.51\00:16:26.75 to Swampy Marshall like old free-range egg farmer 00:16:26.78\00:16:30.12 and Swampy inexplicably said all I need is a couple of 00:16:30.15\00:16:33.36 Maremma's out there, they just took some dinner sits 00:16:33.39\00:16:35.69 and they will take care of the whole problem. 00:16:35.72\00:16:37.36 And that's when they took Oddball out there, 00:16:37.39\00:16:40.23 the first dog to go out there the first time a Maremma 00:16:40.26\00:16:42.80 dog had been used to look after a native species and from 00:16:42.83\00:16:46.13 Oddballs first night on the island and the foxes tracks 00:16:46.17\00:16:48.84 the killing of the birds stopped immediately. 00:16:48.87\00:16:51.41 The project was a huge success, the shepherd dogs stay on the 00:16:53.34\00:16:58.65 island during the breeding season from October to March 00:16:58.68\00:17:02.12 it's as if they take on the responsibility for the care and 00:17:02.15\00:17:06.49 well-being of the penguins, they are prepared to commit 00:17:06.52\00:17:11.53 everything to protect the penguins. 00:17:11.56\00:17:13.46 Amazingly since Oddball and his four legged successors were 00:17:13.50\00:17:18.47 introduced, there was a steady increase in the penguin 00:17:18.50\00:17:22.37 colony size. By 2013 there was and estimated 180 penguins 00:17:22.40\00:17:28.98 and by 2016 the population reached over 200 00:17:29.01\00:17:33.82 and there was no evidence of a fox attack on a single penguin 00:17:33.85\00:17:39.15 on Middle Island through to 2017 when the dogs stood on guard 00:17:39.19\00:17:43.79 but then, disaster struck the colony. 00:17:43.83\00:17:47.90 Due to high tides and bad weather no Maremma's were 00:17:47.93\00:17:54.04 taken to the island, the colony had no shepherd and without 00:17:54.07\00:17:59.97 the dogs on patrol, the foxes came to the island and went 00:18:00.01\00:18:04.05 on a killing spree. In a single night at least 70 penguins 00:18:04.08\00:18:09.02 died, the preservation project immediately returned the 00:18:09.05\00:18:14.06 Maremma's to the island and they have been successfully 00:18:14.09\00:18:17.56 protecting the little penguins ever since. 00:18:17.59\00:18:20.70 The shepherd makes all the difference. 00:18:20.73\00:18:24.33 Today Middle Island is a wild- life sanctuary that is home 00:18:24.37\00:18:29.80 to breeding colonies of little blue penguins 00:18:29.84\00:18:32.67 and short-tailed shearwaters. It's captured the interest of 00:18:32.71\00:18:36.38 the world and provided a huge boost for tourism in the area. 00:18:36.41\00:18:40.88 During the summer months you can visit Middle Island 00:18:44.49\00:18:47.66 on the Meet the Maremma Tours and experience the project 00:18:47.69\00:18:52.13 first hand. The Maremma Ambassador Dogs also spend time 00:18:52.16\00:18:57.13 at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village interacting 00:18:57.17\00:19:00.54 with visitors and helping to educate people about 00:19:00.57\00:19:04.64 environmental conservation. 00:19:04.67\00:19:06.81 Middle Island is part of the Merri Marine Sanctuary 00:19:06.84\00:19:11.95 a dedicated group of volunteers assist in managing the features 00:19:11.98\00:19:17.09 of this beautiful area. This innovative project is widely 00:19:17.12\00:19:22.09 recognized as a world first and has received a number 00:19:22.12\00:19:25.89 of awards. Over 6,000 volunteer hours have been contributed 00:19:25.93\00:19:31.80 to the project in activities such as penguin monitoring, 00:19:31.83\00:19:36.14 care and training of Maremma dogs, building of infrastructure 00:19:36.17\00:19:40.48 on the island and fox control. 00:19:40.51\00:19:42.84 In 2014, this heartwarming story was made into a movie 00:19:42.88\00:19:48.62 called Oddball and enjoyed by people all over the world. 00:19:48.65\00:19:52.85 The storyline is based on the true story of the Middle Island 00:19:52.89\00:19:57.76 Conservation Project and focuses on one of the original 00:19:57.79\00:20:02.50 Maremma shepherds dogs who protects the penguin colony 00:20:02.53\00:20:05.53 and saves them from extinction. 00:20:05.57\00:20:07.90 The movie is funny and touching and loving, in fact, 00:20:07.94\00:20:14.08 the whole movie is basically about love, standing guard 00:20:14.11\00:20:18.75 protecting the needy and vulnerable. 00:20:18.78\00:20:21.12 It's a reminder of the importance of having a good 00:20:21.15\00:20:25.82 shepherd to protect the colony from danger and the penguins 00:20:25.85\00:20:30.76 aren't the only ones that need protection, we do too. 00:20:30.79\00:20:35.70 In a sense we all need a good shepherd as we face the 00:20:35.73\00:20:40.24 challenges of life in the real world because there are times 00:20:40.27\00:20:45.27 when we all feel unprotected and exposed to the elements 00:20:45.31\00:20:48.74 of life. Financial struggles, marital difficulties, 00:20:48.78\00:20:53.35 unfair treatment, employment problems, we need 00:20:53.38\00:20:57.75 a good shepherd. And here's the good news. 00:20:57.79\00:21:01.22 We've got one, listen to what Jesus says in John 10:11: 00:21:01.26\00:21:07.26 Jesus promises to be our shepherd, our protector, 00:21:16.40\00:21:20.54 He's reminding us of the words of the Shepherd's song. 00:21:20.58\00:21:23.78 The opening line is the most famous line of all songs. 00:21:23.81\00:21:28.52 This greatly loved song is extremely powerful in its 00:21:28.55\00:21:33.05 simplicity, here's what it says in Psalm 23: 00:21:33.09\00:21:37.13 Isn't that reassuring? It's so comforting to know 00:21:55.84\00:21:59.68 that the good shepherd will lead, guide, and protect us. 00:21:59.71\00:22:04.52 No matter where we may be stranded in life He will lead us 00:22:04.55\00:22:08.42 to a better place no matter what predators may be lurking, 00:22:08.46\00:22:12.29 He will protect us and lead us to a safe place. 00:22:12.33\00:22:16.16 But there is more in Psalm 23, listen as we continue. 00:22:16.20\00:22:21.40 Perhaps you are going through the valley of the shadow 00:22:34.98\00:22:37.39 right now, maybe the valley of the shadow of death. 00:22:37.42\00:22:40.76 It may be the valley of the shadow of depression. 00:22:40.79\00:22:44.19 It may be the valley of the shadow of discouragement. 00:22:44.23\00:22:47.06 It may be the valley of the shadow of debt or conflict. 00:22:47.10\00:22:51.80 Shadows can be scary. Remember being afraid of shadows 00:22:51.83\00:22:56.54 when you were lying in bed as a child? 00:22:56.57\00:22:58.51 But I've learned a few things about shadows 00:22:58.54\00:23:01.84 First, shadows can't hurt you and second, shadows are always 00:23:01.88\00:23:08.02 bigger than the source and sometimes than reality. 00:23:08.05\00:23:12.05 And here's the good news, wherever there's a shadow, 00:23:12.09\00:23:16.36 there has to be a light. You can't have a shadow without 00:23:16.39\00:23:20.76 a light. So the key when you are going through the valley 00:23:20.80\00:23:24.77 of the shadow is to turn your back on the shadow 00:23:24.80\00:23:28.10 and look at the light. 00:23:28.14\00:23:29.70 Because as long as you keep your eyes on the light 00:23:29.74\00:23:33.71 Jesus, the Light of the world, Jesus, the good shepherd, 00:23:33.74\00:23:38.15 the shadows won't scare you that's how you get through 00:23:38.18\00:23:41.82 the valley's. Jesus promises that even in your darkest 00:23:41.85\00:23:46.65 valley's, He's there walking beside you. Just look at Him 00:23:46.69\00:23:50.99 don't be afraid. And remember this as well shepherd's always 00:23:51.03\00:23:56.70 carried a rod and a staff to protect their sheep 00:23:56.77\00:24:00.30 and in the same way, God has all that's necessary 00:24:00.34\00:24:04.64 to protect you and care for you. 00:24:04.67\00:24:06.01 So yes, you can trust Him even in the darkest valleys. 00:24:06.04\00:24:11.68 Here's how the shepherd's Psalm ends. 00:24:11.71\00:24:14.78 God's protection and His reward lasts forever, the secret is 00:24:42.28\00:24:48.12 knowing the shepherd which reminds me of a famous 00:24:48.15\00:24:52.72 Shakespeare actor who was the guest of honor at a social 00:24:52.75\00:24:55.39 gathering. Where he received many requests to recite favorite 00:24:55.42\00:24:59.89 parts from various literary works. An elderly retired pastor 00:24:59.93\00:25:05.07 in the crowd asked the actor to recite Psalm 23 00:25:05.10\00:25:09.10 The Shepherd's Psalm. the actor agreed on the condition 00:25:09.14\00:25:13.01 that the preacher would also recite it. 00:25:13.04\00:25:15.71 Well the actor's recitation was expertly presented 00:25:15.74\00:25:20.28 with great dramatic emphasis and the crowd gave him loud 00:25:20.32\00:25:25.35 and lengthy applause, then it was the old preachers turn 00:25:25.39\00:25:30.23 his voice was rough and broken from many years of preaching 00:25:30.26\00:25:34.76 and his diction was anything but polished 00:25:34.80\00:25:38.03 but when he finished, there wasn't a dry eye in the room. 00:25:38.07\00:25:42.77 When someone asked the actor what made the difference, 00:25:42.80\00:25:45.97 he replied, I know the Psalm but he knows the shepherd. 00:25:46.01\00:25:51.85 If you would like to know the shepherd better, 00:25:53.55\00:25:56.02 and experience the inner peace and happiness that Jesus offers, 00:25:56.05\00:26:00.06 then I'd like to recommend the free gift we have for all our 00:26:00.09\00:26:04.33 Incredible Journey viewers today. 00:26:04.36\00:26:07.43 It's the easy to read booklet Psalm 23, the shepherd's Psalm. 00:26:07.46\00:26:13.10 This small booklet will provide more detail on the this 00:26:13.13\00:26:16.97 much loved Psalm.
