¤ ¤ 00:00:01.36\00:00:27.49 Some of the most powerful and influential words ever heard 00:00:27.52\00:00:30.99 were spoken here on the northwestern shore of 00:00:31.03\00:00:34.46 the Sea of Galilee in 00:00:34.50\00:00:36.03 Israel. Only a few people heard those words that day 2000 years 00:00:36.06\00:00:41.30 ago but since then billions of people have been influenced by 00:00:41.34\00:00:46.01 them. Today we're going to look at just four of those words; 00:00:46.04\00:00:51.08 four words that changed the world. And they can change your 00:00:51.11\00:00:56.02 life too by bringing you inner peace and happiness. 00:00:56.05\00:01:01.26 ¤ ¤ 00:01:01.29\00:01:21.78 The great English poet, Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote the 00:01:21.81\00:01:25.18 Charge of the Light Brigade about a famous English charge in 00:01:25.21\00:01:29.68 Russia during the Crimean War in the mid-19th century. 00:01:29.72\00:01:33.66 It starts like this: Half a league, half a league, Half a 00:01:33.69\00:01:39.49 league onward All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. 00:01:39.53\00:01:43.26 Forward the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns! he said. 00:01:43.30\00:01:48.54 Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. You can almost 00:01:48.57\00:01:53.88 feel the hoof beats can't you? It was a useless charge. They 00:01:53.91\00:01:58.91 were slaughtered almost to a man The Crimean War has been called 00:01:58.95\00:02:04.49 the first modern war because modern style weapons and 00:02:04.52\00:02:08.12 explosives were first used on a large scale. In its day the 00:02:08.16\00:02:13.76 Crimean War was unparalleled in it's number of casualties which 00:02:13.80\00:02:18.50 horrified all of Europe. On the Russian side was a young soldier 00:02:18.53\00:02:24.11 who in the calm moments would sit and he would write amid the 00:02:24.14\00:02:28.98 horror and death. His name was Leo Tolstoy and he was honestly 00:02:29.01\00:02:34.85 acclaimed as the world's greatest writer of novels. What 00:02:34.88\00:02:41.02 he witnessed in that war changed his life forever. What most 00:02:41.06\00:02:45.56 people don't know is that Leo Tolstoy went on to become one 00:02:45.59\00:02:50.23 of the world's greatest peacemakers. We're going to 00:02:50.27\00:02:53.44 look at his life 00:02:53.47\00:02:54.80 in the context of what Jesus taught. I'm here by the Sea of 00:02:54.84\00:03:00.34 Galilee where Jesus gave us the Beatitudes. The center of Jesus' 00:03:00.38\00:03:06.55 teaching about the kingdom of God is the Sermon on the Mount. 00:03:06.58\00:03:10.69 Now the Sermon on the Mount is a summary of how Christians should 00:03:10.72\00:03:15.96 live before God and also in relation to other people. 00:03:15.99\00:03:19.69 It contains some of Jesus' best known teaching and instruction 00:03:19.73\00:03:24.10 for living. So if we really want to know what it means to be a 00:03:24.13\00:03:28.50 follower of Jesus and to live as a citizen of the kingdom of God 00:03:28.54\00:03:32.67 then we must understand Christ's teaching in the Beatitudes. But 00:03:32.71\00:03:37.91 the Beatitudes aren't just spiritual principles for 00:03:37.95\00:03:41.28 Christians. They are arguably the body of principles that has 00:03:41.32\00:03:46.69 been most influential in shaping Western civilization as we know 00:03:46.72\00:03:51.03 know it today. The word beatitude is an old fashioned, 00:03:51.06\00:03:57.57 religious sounding word that not many people will recognize today 00:03:57.60\00:04:02.17 It refers to being blissfully happy. This is a happiness that 00:04:02.20\00:04:07.98 belongs only to God and it can come only from God. In other 00:04:08.01\00:04:13.78 words when in your life you have the qualities Jesus described in 00:04:13.82\00:04:18.52 the Beatitudes you will share in the joy of heaven here on earth. 00:04:18.55\00:04:23.56 It's the only way to truly live. If you're after lasting 00:04:23.59\00:04:27.60 happiness and inner peace here it is. So Jesus sat on a hill 00:04:27.63\00:04:34.37 so the crowd could hear him and he taught the people the most 00:04:34.40\00:04:37.81 radical and influential set of principles for living that this 00:04:37.84\00:04:42.18 world has ever heard. Much of what Jesus taught here is about 00:04:42.21\00:04:47.18 personal relationships and how people behave toward one another 00:04:47.22\00:04:51.05 And among the Beatitudes he said this in Matthew chapter five 00:04:51.09\00:04:55.99 and verse nine: 00:04:56.02\00:04:57.56 There they are, just four words, but they changed the world. 00:05:00.20\00:05:05.70 Here's the full text: 00:05:05.73\00:05:07.57 Like each of the Beatitudes there is the great truth hidden 00:05:13.94\00:05:19.48 in this radical contradiction and this great truth can be seen 00:05:19.51\00:05:24.22 played out in the life of Leo Tolstoy. Many people have heard 00:05:24.25\00:05:29.29 the name Leo Tolstoy probably in connection with his huge novel 00:05:29.32\00:05:33.80 War and Peace. It's probably the best known novel in the world 00:05:33.83\00:05:38.70 that's never been read by most people because it's whapping 00:05:38.73\00:05:42.77 1125 pages long. Leo Tolstoy is in fact regarded as one of 00:05:42.80\00:05:50.35 the greatest authors of all time But what most people don't know 00:05:50.38\00:05:55.65 is that he was one of the most influential peacemakers of all 00:05:55.68\00:05:59.95 time. In fact, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three 00:05:59.99\00:06:06.29 between 1901 and 1910. His not being awarded the prize is one 00:06:06.33\00:06:13.13 of the greatest controversies in the history of the Nobel 00:06:13.17\00:06:16.47 Prize. Let's look at his story and find out why. 00:06:16.50\00:06:21.14 His actual name in Russian was Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. 00:06:21.18\00:06:27.48 That's because during the reign of the Czars he was born to an 00:06:27.52\00:06:32.29 aristocratic family in 1828 near Tula in Russia. Tolstoy 00:06:32.32\00:06:39.29 experienced repeated loss as a child. His mother died when he 00:06:39.33\00:06:44.67 was two and his father died when he was just nine. Then his aunt 00:06:44.70\00:06:49.87 became his legal guardian but she too died. So Tolstoy was 00:06:49.90\00:06:55.54 raised by another aunt. Tolstoy was a voracious reader but a 00:06:55.58\00:07:01.82 poor student. When he reached university his teachers 00:07:01.85\00:07:06.12 described him as both unwilling and unable to learn. This was 00:07:06.15\00:07:12.13 probably because his aristocratic upbringing had led 00:07:12.16\00:07:15.86 him into a debauched lifestyle which included being heavily 00:07:15.90\00:07:19.53 addicted excessive gambling and immoral living. Even from his 00:07:19.57\00:07:24.34 adolescence he didn't have much time for study and eventually 00:07:24.37\00:07:28.94 he left university without a degree. Tolstoy returned to his 00:07:28.98\00:07:34.55 family estate where he had a go at farming trying lead the surfs 00:07:34.58\00:07:39.19 as they were farmers in their work. His aim was to be the 00:07:39.22\00:07:43.73 perfect farmer. However, the attractions of the big city drew 00:07:43.76\00:07:47.90 him with their brothels and gambling. So he actually spent 00:07:47.93\00:07:52.47 most of his time away from the farm. Tolstoy was going nowhere 00:07:52.50\00:07:58.27 fast. One day Tolstoy's older brother Nikolai came to visit 00:07:58.31\00:08:04.25 him on the farm. Nikolai was in the army and was on military 00:08:04.28\00:08:08.78 leave. Nikolai saw Tolstoy's huge mounting debts and the 00:08:08.82\00:08:13.66 downward spiral of his life. So he convinced him to go with him 00:08:13.69\00:08:18.53 and join the army and that's exactly what Leo did in 1851 00:08:18.56\00:08:23.73 serving first in the Caucus region of southern Russia. 00:08:23.77\00:08:27.60 Tolstoy proudly wore his military uniform and many photos 00:08:27.64\00:08:32.41 were taken. Army was nothing like his previous life of 00:08:32.44\00:08:37.45 privilege and leisure. It was a hard and nomadic life in which 00:08:37.48\00:08:42.58 he was exposed to the brutality of war. (Cannons sounding off) 00:08:42.62\00:08:56.97 Tolstoy was transferred to Ukraine in 1853 where he fought 00:08:57.00\00:09:01.64 in the Crimean War as an artillery officer. He was there 00:09:01.67\00:09:06.11 during the 11 month long siege of Sevastopol and at the 00:09:06.14\00:09:10.41 disastrous battle of Ternea. During this war Tolstoy was 00:09:10.45\00:09:15.78 recognized for his courage and promoted to lieutenant. The 00:09:15.82\00:09:21.02 Crimean War was first large scale use of many modern 00:09:21.06\00:09:26.19 military technologies which resulted in a massive loss of 00:09:26.23\00:09:30.43 life which shocked Russia and the Ottoman Empire. And the 00:09:30.47\00:09:36.14 scandalous incompetence of the generals contributed to the 00:09:36.17\00:09:39.51 wholesale slaughter of the soldiers on every side. It was 00:09:39.54\00:09:44.88 during private periods of this time in the army that 00:09:44.91\00:09:47.75 Tolstoy really 00:09:47.78\00:09:49.15 started writing. He started writing an autobiographical 00:09:49.18\00:09:53.39 trilogy. It began with the story called Childhood in which he 00:09:53.42\00:09:58.59 described his fondest childhood memories. This became his first 00:09:58.63\00:10:03.26 published work in 1852. During the Crimean War he composed his 00:10:03.30\00:10:09.74 sequel Boyhood. These stories were eagerly snapped up by 00:10:09.77\00:10:13.98 publishers and won great acclaim from the public. But during his 00:10:14.01\00:10:19.11 time in the army he also started thinking deeply about the 00:10:19.15\00:10:23.72 contradictions and horrors of war. This was reflected in a 00:10:23.75\00:10:28.42 three part series called Sevastopol Tales which he wrote 00:10:28.46\00:10:33.09 in the middle of the Crimean War Tolstoy's experiences in the 00:10:33.13\00:10:37.27 military had a profound impact on him. It shaped his thinking 00:10:37.30\00:10:41.57 for the rest of his life. He was appalled at the loss of life in 00:10:41.60\00:10:45.91 warfare and he ended up leaving the army soon after the end of 00:10:45.94\00:10:50.31 the Crimean War. Upon his return to Russia from the army Tolstoy 00:10:50.35\00:10:56.08 found himself greatly in demand for his writing. However, that 00:10:56.12\00:11:00.26 same year one of his brothers died of tuberculosis. Five years 00:11:00.29\00:11:05.19 later the same disease claimed the life of his other brother 00:11:05.23\00:11:09.33 with whom he had served in the army. This was too much for 00:11:09.36\00:11:14.04 Tolstoy and he fell back into his old ways of debauchery. 00:11:14.07\00:11:18.17 Although his writing was in high demand he undermined his 00:11:18.21\00:11:22.54 opportunities with his corrupt lifestyle. To try to escape the 00:11:22.58\00:11:27.55 downward spiral of his addictions Tolstoy set off on 00:11:27.58\00:11:31.92 the first of two trips to Western Europe in 1857. 00:11:31.95\00:11:35.89 However, Tolstoy 00:11:35.92\00:11:37.53 was still in the grip of his addiction to gambling and so 00:11:37.56\00:11:41.10 penniless he had to return to Russia only to return to Western 00:11:41.13\00:11:45.73 Europe again a few year later. His trips to Western Europe 00:11:45.77\00:11:50.91 along with his wartime experiences were to shape 00:11:50.94\00:11:54.58 Tolstoy's philosophy and pacifist view. In France Tolstoy 00:11:54.61\00:12:00.08 met with and was influenced by leading European thinkers. 00:12:00.12\00:12:04.19 He also witnessed a public execution in Paris that 00:12:04.22\00:12:08.12 traumatized him and he came to view governments as corrupt and 00:12:08.16\00:12:12.39 not worthy of trust. After his second trip to Western Europe 00:12:12.43\00:12:16.87 Tolstoy returned to Russia fired up with enthusiasm to make a 00:12:16.90\00:12:22.50 difference in society. He had started to accumulate wealth 00:12:22.54\00:12:27.34 through his writing again so founded 13 schools for the 00:12:27.38\00:12:31.81 children of serfs who had recently been freed. 00:12:31.85\00:12:35.68 The majority of the people of Russia at that time were serfs 00:12:35.72\00:12:39.25 which meant that they were virtually just slaves who worked 00:12:39.29\00:12:43.02 the land for the wealthy elite. Tolstoy's schools were a radical 00:12:43.06\00:12:49.06 experiment in democracy. But they didn't last long. They were 00:12:49.10\00:12:53.20 continually harassed and soon shut down by the secret police 00:12:53.23\00:12:57.54 of the Russian Czar. Still they were the forerunners of many 00:12:57.57\00:13:02.74 later education programs around the world. In 1862 Tolstoy 00:13:02.78\00:13:09.45 married a doctor's daughter names Sophia Andreyev. Sophia 00:13:09.48\00:13:15.29 became a great support to Tolstoy bringing order and 00:13:15.32\00:13:19.69 structure to his life with her administrative and financial 00:13:19.73\00:13:23.13 abilities. They had 13 children together of whom eight survived 00:13:23.16\00:13:28.50 childhood. That same year his marriage seemed to have given 00:13:28.54\00:13:34.04 Tolstoy the space to begin writing what many believe to be 00:13:34.08\00:13:38.21 the greatest novel, War and Peace and later Anna Karenina. 00:13:38.25\00:13:43.55 As a result of the success of these two great novels Tolstoy 00:13:43.59\00:13:48.12 started to accumulate wealth again. He also had time to 00:13:48.16\00:13:53.16 reflect on the disreputable life that he had led until then 00:13:53.19\00:13:57.30 and he went through a great moral and spiritual crisis. As 00:13:57.33\00:14:02.34 he considered his life he became depressed and he struggled with 00:14:02.37\00:14:07.44 the question of the meaning of life. Until then Tolstoy had 00:14:07.48\00:14:13.11 only nominally been a Christian. But he went first to the Russian 00:14:13.15\00:14:16.82 Orthodox church for answers. He found nothing to satisfy him 00:14:16.85\00:14:21.82 there and he came to the view that all organized religion was 00:14:21.86\00:14:26.59 corrupt. So Tolstoy started studying the Bible for himself 00:14:26.63\00:14:31.13 and focused more and more on the teachings of Jesus. What he 00:14:31.17\00:14:36.10 found there, and in particular in the Sermon on the Mount, 00:14:36.14\00:14:39.27 transformed his life. Tolstoy came to understand the teachings 00:14:39.31\00:14:44.61 of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount in a literal and radical 00:14:44.65\00:14:49.12 way. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus teaches the values of the 00:14:49.15\00:14:53.79 kingdom of God and Tolstoy believed that the reign of God 00:14:53.82\00:14:58.09 is the only source of authority to which Christians were 00:14:58.13\00:15:02.66 ultimately answerable. Tolstoy rejected the idea that human 00:15:02.70\00:15:08.70 governments have ultimate authority over human beings. 00:15:08.74\00:15:12.51 In fact, he saw the state as violent and deceitful. Human 00:15:12.54\00:15:18.28 governments were ruled by hierarchical and authoritarian 00:15:18.31\00:15:22.02 structures but Tolstoy believed that human relationships should 00:15:22.05\00:15:26.99 be governed only by the values that Jesus taught including 00:15:27.02\00:15:31.53 servant leadership and universal compassion. Tolstoy believed 00:15:31.56\00:15:37.30 that a follower of Christ could find lasting happiness by 00:15:37.33\00:15:41.87 striving to follow the great commandment of loving God above 00:15:41.90\00:15:45.97 all and your neighbor as yourself rather than looking 00:15:46.01\00:15:49.11 outward to the church or to the state for guidance. Because of 00:15:49.14\00:15:54.15 this Tolstoy completely rejected war and violence in all its 00:15:54.18\00:15:59.12 forms and became a radical pacifist. He wrote: 00:15:59.15\00:16:03.43 Tolstoy's ideas on nonviolent resistance were to have a 00:16:25.31\00:16:29.85 profound impact on key 20th century thinkers such as Martin 00:16:29.88\00:16:35.02 Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi. In fact, a young Gandhi wrote 00:16:35.06\00:16:40.70 Tolstoy a letter asking for his advice on what to do about the 00:16:40.73\00:16:45.27 injustices of the British in England. In a letter he sent to 00:16:45.30\00:16:49.67 Gandhi Tolstoy argued that it was only through the principle 00:16:49.70\00:16:53.98 of love that the Indian people would be able to be free from 00:16:54.01\00:16:58.35 colonial British rule. Gandhi then read Tolstoy's book The 00:16:58.38\00:17:04.22 Kingdom of God is with you which also helped convince him to 00:17:04.25\00:17:08.59 avoid violence and take up non violent resistance. In his 00:17:08.62\00:17:13.06 autobiography Gandhi acknowledged his debt to Tolstoy 00:17:13.09\00:17:16.97 calling him: 00:17:17.00\00:17:23.91 Gandhi even named his second ashram in South Africa Tolstoy 00:17:23.94\00:17:29.78 Colony. Something else that Gandhi and Tolstoy had in common 00:17:29.81\00:17:33.95 was that they both espoused the benefits of vegetarianism. As a 00:17:33.98\00:17:40.82 Count Tolstoy was a high ranking nobleman however because he 00:17:40.86\00:17:44.93 he took the Sermon on the Mount very seriously he also came to 00:17:44.96\00:17:49.06 believe that he should choose the path of poverty. He saw 00:17:49.10\00:17:53.74 denial of self as the path to true spiritual nobility. 00:17:53.77\00:18:00.68 For Tolstoy these weren't just ideas. He took the part of 00:18:00.71\00:18:04.91 poverty very seriously adopting the dress of the Russian peasant 00:18:04.95\00:18:09.68 and living as they lived. Because of his unconventional 00:18:09.72\00:18:13.72 spiritual beliefs Tolstoy encountered many difficulties. 00:18:13.76\00:18:18.69 He was thrown out by the Russian Orthodox Church, he was under 00:18:18.73\00:18:23.06 surveillance by the Russian secret police but worst of all 00:18:23.10\00:18:28.30 his views of his lifestyle became a huge issue for his wife 00:18:28.34\00:18:32.87 especially when he told her that he wanted to give away all his 00:18:32.91\00:18:38.05 money. His wife, perhaps naturally objected strongly. We 00:18:38.08\00:18:43.15 can understand Sophia Tolstoy. After all she had never signed 00:18:43.18\00:18:48.72 up for this. Eventually, Tolstoy agreed to a compromise with his 00:18:48.76\00:18:52.99 wife. He agreed to grant her all the copyrights and the royalties 00:18:53.03\00:18:57.07 to all his writing before 1881. However, this didn't fix his 00:18:57.10\00:19:03.81 marital relationship which in their later years had been 00:19:03.84\00:19:07.91 described as one of the unhappiest marriage 00:19:07.94\00:19:11.31 relationships in the history of literature. Tolstoy struggled to 00:19:11.35\00:19:16.89 reconcile his faith with the realities of what had become a 00:19:16.92\00:19:21.62 highly toxic marriage as his wife became more and more bitter 00:19:21.66\00:19:24.99 and resentful of his radical views and attitudes. Although 00:19:25.03\00:19:30.80 Tolstoy came to reject organized religion he never abandoned 00:19:30.83\00:19:35.27 Jesus Christ and his teachings. However, it was during these 00:19:35.30\00:19:39.61 last 30 years of his life that Tolstoy established himself as a 00:19:39.64\00:19:43.68 global moral leader whose influence stretched around the 00:19:43.71\00:19:48.92 world and even to this day. On November the 19th 1910 Tolstoy 00:19:48.95\00:19:56.22 finally mustered up the courage to try to escape from his 00:19:56.26\00:20:00.63 fractured marriage and he secretly boarded a train heading 00:20:00.66\00:20:05.20 south. He died the next day of pneumonia. Tolstoy spent his 00:20:05.23\00:20:10.34 last day preaching love and nonviolence to his fellow 00:20:10.37\00:20:15.68 passengers on the train. At his funeral thousands of peasants 00:20:15.71\00:20:20.82 lined the streets. We all love peace, we all love it when there's no conflict and 00:20:20.85\00:20:29.79 strife but that's not what the Bible means when it uses the 00:20:29.82\00:20:33.09 word peace. In the Bible peace isn't a passive word, it's an 00:20:33.13\00:20:38.67 active word. It doesn't only mean the absence of something 00:20:38.70\00:20:42.84 but the existence of something. In the Bible peace means the 00:20:42.87\00:20:49.68 presence of satisfying and perfect relationships that bring 00:20:49.71\00:20:53.55 about contentment, joy and well being. That's what Jesus means 00:20:53.58\00:20:58.92 when he says: 00:20:58.95\00:21:02.26 There are people who choose not to intervene for the sake of 00:21:02.29\00:21:07.40 peace and so they let situations and relationships deteriorate 00:21:07.43\00:21:11.80 and break down. All for the sake of keeping the peace. But that's 00:21:11.83\00:21:17.47 not what Jesus called us to do at all. Remember that his idea 00:21:17.51\00:21:22.31 of peace is active and not passive. In this Beatitude Jesus 00:21:22.34\00:21:28.68 doesn't say blessed are the peace lovers. He says blessed 00:21:28.72\00:21:33.49 are the peacemakers. We are called to create peace before we 00:21:33.52\00:21:38.99 can enjoy it. Those who make peace are even happier than 00:21:39.03\00:21:43.67 those who enjoy it. Now the Hebrew word for peace is Shalom. 00:21:43.70\00:21:48.90 Now Shalom means well-being at its very best and highest. 00:21:48.94\00:21:54.64 So we can 00:21:54.68\00:21:56.54 look at that and conclude that the happiest people are those 00:21:56.58\00:22:00.78 who do anything to increase the well-being and welfare of others 00:22:00.82\00:22:05.05 in the world and that would be a correct understanding. However 00:22:05.09\00:22:10.19 the word Shalom also fundamentally means having right 00:22:10.23\00:22:15.20 relationships. When you have right relationships they bring 00:22:15.23\00:22:19.67 you peace. Now there are basically three kinds of right 00:22:19.70\00:22:23.54 relationships that are important The first one is that we must be 00:22:23.57\00:22:28.88 in a right relationship with ourselves. There are people who 00:22:28.91\00:22:32.81 hate themselves and they have never learned to have a healthy 00:22:32.85\00:22:37.89 self-concept. And then there are people who are so full of 00:22:37.92\00:22:42.72 themselves that they can be obnoxious at best and downright 00:22:42.76\00:22:46.90 dangerous at worst. But there is a sense in which as even Jesus 00:22:46.93\00:22:52.73 told us, we are to love ourselves and the only way to 00:22:52.77\00:22:57.04 make sure that this is a healthy love is to be able to see 00:22:57.07\00:23:00.74 yourself as God sees you. So first of all, to have peace you 00:23:00.78\00:23:06.65 must have a right relationship with yourself. The second right 00:23:06.68\00:23:11.35 relationship you must cultivate is with your fellow human beings 00:23:11.39\00:23:15.42 We live in a world with all kinds of prejudices and barriers 00:23:15.46\00:23:20.10 between people. Often they are visible but the most dangerous 00:23:20.13\00:23:26.13 ones are the invisible ones that we take for granted and when you 00:23:26.17\00:23:30.41 live in line with these prejudices you will always be 00:23:30.44\00:23:34.11 not only unhappy but unsafe. Only the love of God can heal 00:23:34.14\00:23:40.42 these wounds. True unity and peace in this world can only be 00:23:40.45\00:23:45.59 found through the power of the love of Jesus Christ. So when 00:23:45.62\00:23:50.46 you work for the good of others you will find supreme happiness. 00:23:50.49\00:23:54.56 When you cultivate loving relationships with others you 00:23:54.60\00:23:58.63 will also find supreme happiness The third and most important 00:23:58.67\00:24:04.51 right relationship that you must have is a right relationship 00:24:04.54\00:24:08.68 with God. When you are in a right relationship with God then 00:24:08.71\00:24:13.52 this peace will flow into your life and it will heal the wrong 00:24:13.55\00:24:17.15 relationships you may have with yourself and bring peace to 00:24:17.19\00:24:21.92 your relationships with others. The Bible tells us how we can 00:24:21.96\00:24:26.66 have this right relationship of peace with God. It says this in 00:24:26.70\00:24:30.97 Romans chapter five and verse one: 00:24:31.00\00:24:34.10 The beginning of all peace is the forgiveness and 00:24:42.18\00:24:46.88 the justification that we receive through Jesus Christ. 00:24:46.92\00:24:52.15 This means that because of what he has done at the cross our 00:24:52.19\00:24:56.02 sins are forgiven when we believe and trust in him. And 00:24:56.06\00:25:00.73 the cross helps us to how much God loves not only us but the 00:25:00.76\00:25:05.63 whole world and the price that he paid for peace. Just before 00:25:05.67\00:25:11.17 Jesus was arrested to be crucified he said this to his 00:25:11.21\00:25:15.21 disciples in John chapter 14 and verse 27: 00:25:15.24\00:25:18.55 This has been called the last will and testament of Jesus. 00:25:24.65\00:25:30.06 And it consisted of peace. Who has ever been bequeathed a 00:25:30.09\00:25:34.83 wonderful inheritance and not accepted it?
