¤ ¤ 00:00:01.80\00:00:25.19 Social media has taken the world by storm. Facebook, Instagram, 00:00:25.22\00:00:30.76 What's That, Twitter, Tumblr, Snapchat, YouTube, Messenger, 00:00:30.79\00:00:35.06 LinkedIn and many others are now household names. But have you 00:00:35.10\00:00:41.80 ever heard of the very first social media site six degrees. 00:00:41.84\00:00:46.04 It was created in 1997 but closed in 2001. Users of 00:00:46.07\00:00:53.08 six-degrees were able to upload a profile and make friends with 00:00:53.11\00:00:57.92 other users. When others saw the potential of this new form of 00:00:57.95\00:01:02.29 media competition was frantic and soon other companies emerged 00:01:02.32\00:01:08.33 On the first of August 2003 Myspace was launched and quickly 00:01:08.36\00:01:14.14 became the largest social media site in the world at that time. 00:01:14.17\00:01:18.24 But the giant in social media began in February 2004. Facebook 00:01:18.27\00:01:25.51 dominates the social media market with over one and a half 00:01:25.55\00:01:29.72 billion people using it to connect with friends. If you 00:01:29.75\00:01:34.82 want to succeed in social media it is said that Instagram is the 00:01:34.86\00:01:39.29 account you much have. With one billion active users every 00:01:39.33\00:01:44.47 month and 500 million of them new to Instagram every day it's 00:01:44.50\00:01:48.60 a very powerful medium of communication. So for many 00:01:48.64\00:01:52.97 people today the use of social media has become a necessary 00:01:53.01\00:01:57.75 daily activity to connect with friends, share, create and 00:01:57.78\00:02:02.38 spread information. Most users spend approximately one to two 00:02:02.42\00:02:07.39 hours each day and they cannot imagine life without it. So the 00:02:07.42\00:02:13.53 question is how did we survive before all these forms of social 00:02:13.56\00:02:18.47 media arrived? How much time are we spending on social media? 00:02:18.50\00:02:22.90 And what is its impact in our lives? I'm Gary Kent. Join me 00:02:22.94\00:02:29.41 as we navigate through this amazing digital world. 00:02:29.44\00:02:35.15 ¤ ¤ 00:02:35.18\00:02:50.30 I'm sure you've noticed how attached people are becoming to 00:02:50.33\00:02:54.40 their mobile phones. As soon as it beeps or tells us we have a 00:02:54.44\00:02:58.57 new message or email we just can't resist checking it out. 00:02:58.61\00:03:03.28 For many individuals the majority of most communications 00:03:03.31\00:03:08.38 both personally and professionally is now by mobile 00:03:08.42\00:03:12.59 phone or email. Unfortunately there seems to be a down side to 00:03:12.62\00:03:18.39 this form of communication as it's sometimes easy to 00:03:18.43\00:03:22.96 miscommunicate our messages. Without the signals you can get 00:03:23.00\00:03:27.64 from face to face interactions through body language, emotions, 00:03:27.67\00:03:32.11 and exhibited feelings the words can sometimes seem an unintended 00:03:32.14\00:03:37.91 meaning. Words are singularly the most powerful force 00:03:37.95\00:03:44.29 available to humanity. We can choose to use this force 00:03:44.32\00:03:48.99 constructively with words of encouragement or destructively 00:03:49.02\00:03:53.36 using words of criticism. Words have power and have the ability 00:03:53.40\00:03:58.77 to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt or to harm. Teachers in a 00:03:58.80\00:04:06.84 local high school reportedly were concerned about the lack of 00:04:06.88\00:04:10.91 conversational skills among some of their students. So they got 00:04:10.95\00:04:15.45 together and decided to try an experiment. On a given evening 00:04:15.48\00:04:21.36 the participating team of students were asked to shut 00:04:21.39\00:04:24.46 down all their devices. The teacher then placed them 00:04:24.49\00:04:28.10 separately in a real time, face to face situation with 00:04:28.13\00:04:32.83 individuals they didn't know. At first the students had a very 00:04:32.87\00:04:37.84 difficult time initiating or sustaining a conversation. They 00:04:37.87\00:04:42.81 had learned the art of small talk which is key 00:04:42.84\00:04:46.21 in many professional careers and in personal and social 00:04:46.25\00:04:49.92 interaction. Later during the debriefing the teenagers were 00:04:49.95\00:04:55.72 heard to make comments such as I don't have any trouble texting 00:04:55.76\00:04:59.56 and tweeting but I couldn't think of a thing to say in 00:04:59.59\00:05:04.10 person or Wow, that was a lot harder than I expected or I'm 00:05:04.13\00:05:11.24 going to turn off my electronics for at least an hour a day and 00:05:11.27\00:05:15.54 practice doing some real time small talk. So what impact is 00:05:15.58\00:05:21.88 all this screen time having on society? Well we're going to 00:05:21.92\00:05:26.29 find out. Our guest today, Dr. Arlene Taylor, is going to draw 00:05:26.32\00:05:31.19 back the curtain and help us the impact screen time has on 00:05:31.23\00:05:36.30 the human brain. Dr. Arlene Taylor is the founder and 00:05:36.33\00:05:40.57 president of Realizations Inc. a nonprofit corporation that 00:05:40.60\00:05:44.37 engages in brain function research. She's the author of 00:05:44.41\00:05:47.94 several popular books related to brain function, practical 00:05:47.98\00:05:51.61 applications to relationships in everyday living and creator of 00:05:51.65\00:05:56.02 the Longevity Lifestyle Matters program. 00:05:56.05\00:05:59.32 Dr. Taylor welcome to our program today. Social media is a 00:05:59.35\00:06:04.46 relatively new term isn't it? 00:06:04.49\00:06:06.46 And reportedly there's been a bit of jockeying as individuals 00:06:06.49\00:06:11.43 try to assert rights to that term. And exactly there has been 00:06:11.47\00:06:16.14 AOL believes it came out of AOL in the early 1990s when the 00:06:16.17\00:06:22.54 company was developing what would become AOL Instant 00:06:22.58\00:06:25.95 Messenger. There's so many definitions for social media 00:06:25.98\00:06:30.19 floating around. One example goes like this: Social media 00:06:30.22\00:06:35.99 is a term 00:06:36.02\00:06:37.36 that encompasses a smorgasbord of online media where people are 00:06:37.39\00:06:42.36 talking, participating, sharing networking and bookmarking 00:06:42.40\00:06:47.97 online with a wide variety of options from social sharing 00:06:48.00\00:06:52.54 sites such as YouTube and Instagram through social 00:06:52.57\00:06:56.81 networks such as LinkedIn and Facebook. 00:06:56.85\00:07:00.22 Social media is huge in this age of technology but I sometimes 00:07:00.25\00:07:05.22 wonder just how many people really use social media sites. 00:07:05.25\00:07:09.82 A lot! 2018 data indicate that there are more than three and 00:07:09.86\00:07:16.23 one-half billion internet users. Estimates are that social media 00:07:16.26\00:07:23.47 users grow by one new user every 15 seconds. You compare that to 00:07:23.51\00:07:31.61 every 20 seconds in the United States someone is diagnosed with 00:07:31.65\00:07:37.32 diabetes. Every 15 seconds there's a new social media user. 00:07:37.35\00:07:44.46 According to statistics from the Nielsen group internet users in 00:07:44.49\00:07:51.23 the United States spend more time on Facebook than any other 00:07:51.27\00:07:55.94 website. In Australia nearly three-fourths of the population 00:07:55.97\00:08:01.08 are active Facebook users with half the population logging onto 00:08:01.11\00:08:07.48 the site at least once a day. In the United States more than four 00:08:07.52\00:08:13.49 fifths of the population use Facebook spending an average of 00:08:13.52\00:08:18.09 20 minutes per day on the site. And Instagram is second in the 00:08:18.13\00:08:24.20 United States after Facebook. YouTube is the world's largest 00:08:24.23\00:08:29.20 video network with users spending upwards of a billion 00:08:29.24\00:08:33.98 hours per day watching. 00:08:34.01\00:08:36.91 What are some of the up sides to social media? 00:08:36.95\00:08:40.15 Almost anything on this planet has an up side and a down side. 00:08:40.18\00:08:46.32 Personally I do the majority of work with my nonprofit 00:08:46.35\00:08:50.89 corporation, Realizations Inc., via technology. I have almost 00:08:50.93\00:08:56.46 instant worldwide communication with anyone else who has a 00:08:56.50\00:09:01.60 computer or mobile phone. Almost instant access to data, the 00:09:01.64\00:09:07.64 state of the art information and on and on and on. Reports 00:09:07.68\00:09:15.02 suggest that on the internet every click, every view and 00:09:15.05\00:09:19.42 every emotion is tracked and noted somewhere in the form of 00:09:19.45\00:09:26.36 statistics and ordered for businesses to understand the 00:09:26.39\00:09:30.87 users behavior and be better able to market their products. 00:09:30.90\00:09:34.07 And there's another upside. Users get to chat with each 00:09:34.10\00:09:40.41 other online and post pictures and updates about their lives. 00:09:40.44\00:09:45.71 And individuals who are house bound or must stay in bed are 00:09:45.75\00:09:51.32 still able to stay connected with family, with friends by 00:09:51.35\00:09:57.16 social networks. 00:09:57.19\00:09:58.66 In life we typically give up something to get something. That 00:09:58.69\00:10:02.96 suggests that there can be a down side to social media 00:10:03.00\00:10:05.83 technology when it's used inappropriately or out of 00:10:05.87\00:10:09.14 balance as you indicated. What are some of the potential 00:10:09.17\00:10:12.27 down sides? 00:10:12.31\00:10:14.68 So the short answer is that the human brain is extremely 00:10:14.71\00:10:19.28 sensitive to the outside world. Therefore, technology used 00:10:19.31\00:10:24.82 inappropriately or out of balance can create some real 00:10:24.85\00:10:28.16 problems for the brain. And again especially for the 00:10:28.19\00:10:32.89 developing brain. Current studies show that the prefrontal 00:10:32.93\00:10:38.27 cortex of the brain, the part right behind your forehead, is 00:10:38.30\00:10:42.44 not done, meaning all the myelination is not complete 00:10:42.47\00:10:47.71 in fiber optics until late 20s and possibly early 30s. 00:10:47.74\00:10:54.38 According to Psychology Today what a teenager does and is 00:10:54.42\00:11:00.76 exposed to has a large influence on that teen's future because 00:11:00.79\00:11:07.76 experience and current needs shape the pruning and sprouting 00:11:07.80\00:11:14.24 process in the brain. When a brain is born it has way more 00:11:14.27\00:11:19.27 neurons than it actually needs. And especially during the first 00:11:19.31\00:11:24.08 five years and then again during the teenage years functions that 00:11:24.11\00:11:29.42 are not utilized the brain just prunes and gets rid of those 00:11:29.45\00:11:33.86 cells. They're not needed. So something like being the class 00:11:33.89\00:11:37.79 clown for example can help make a good salesperson later on. And 00:11:37.83\00:11:44.80 running for class president will help develop brain skills 00:11:44.83\00:11:49.07 that are needed to run a business or take on a management 00:11:49.10\00:11:54.34 position. So if the teenager is playing lots of video games 00:11:54.38\00:11:59.25 these will shape the brain in such a way that they might 00:11:59.28\00:12:03.45 become an excellent fighter pilot. But becoming an 00:12:03.49\00:12:08.42 accountant or a researcher will likely be less possible. Being 00:12:08.46\00:12:15.86 exposed to negative influences on social media also shapes the 00:12:15.90\00:12:20.77 brain and the future of the adolescent. It can sow the seeds 00:12:20.80\00:12:25.47 of addictive behaviors and interpersonal conflict. Research 00:12:25.51\00:12:31.05 has shown that in order to develop effective socialization 00:12:31.08\00:12:35.58 skills the brain needs real time real life face to face 00:12:35.62\00:12:42.82 experiences. Practicing striking up a conversation with another 00:12:42.86\00:12:46.80 individual and setting them at ease through small talk When the 00:12:46.83\00:12:53.20 outside world primarily consists of Facebook, email, LinkedIn, 00:12:53.23\00:12:59.34 texting, tweeting and surfing the net as it's called, looking 00:12:59.37\00:13:04.58 up things on the internet exposure and practice of face to 00:13:04.61\00:13:09.58 face communication is reduced. Some studies can show that 00:13:09.62\00:13:14.72 talking in cyber shorthand, as it is called, most of the time 00:13:14.76\00:13:19.53 can make it less likely that that brain will be able to walk 00:13:19.56\00:13:24.20 into a crowd of complete strangers and initiate an 00:13:24.23\00:13:28.40 enjoyable conversation face to face. Remember the teenage brain 00:13:28.44\00:13:34.91 is not done yet. It is rather a self-absorbed and somewhat 00:13:34.94\00:13:41.92 narcissistic chunk of biological real estate as in it's all about 00:13:41.95\00:13:49.59 me. Maturing the teenage brain is a learned process designed 00:13:49.62\00:13:56.26 to move it away from narcissistic behaviors to more 00:13:56.30\00:14:00.54 balanced and functional adult behaviors. This is a learning 00:14:00.57\00:14:05.07 process. It is not an automatic genetic process. So an 00:14:05.11\00:14:10.05 unbalanced use of technology during adolescent years can 00:14:10.08\00:14:14.28 interfere with the brain's actual maturation process. 00:14:14.32\00:14:19.22 Unfortunately if the teenage brain fails to mature and move 00:14:19.25\00:14:24.59 to more balanced behaviors it tends to continue narcissistic 00:14:24.63\00:14:30.57 it's all about me behaviors into adulthood. The danger is that 00:14:30.60\00:14:36.67 the antisocial narcissistic adult may begin to exhibit 00:14:36.71\00:14:42.38 sociopathic behaviors. 00:14:42.41\00:14:44.78 I suppose time spent on social media sites can be an issue as 00:14:44.81\00:14:50.05 well. 00:14:50.09\00:14:51.75 Studies have shown recently that those who spend three or more 00:14:51.79\00:14:55.32 hours per day on Facebook or other social media sites tend to 00:14:55.36\00:15:02.13 occupy self with self. They are at high risk for becoming 00:15:02.16\00:15:06.84 restless, anxious and depressed as they compare what was posted 00:15:06.87\00:15:13.74 with what they personally possess. They tend to use lower 00:15:13.78\00:15:19.81 brain functions from the first or second layers of the brain 00:15:19.85\00:15:25.09 over higher brain functions in the third layer, the neocortex. 00:15:25.12\00:15:29.59 And they tend to exhibit decreased empathy and compassion 00:15:29.62\00:15:35.46 When you can't speak or hear another person it becomes 00:15:35.50\00:15:41.34 easier to be less embarrassed and less inhibited and less 00:15:41.37\00:15:44.77 concerned about what other people even think. It becomes 00:15:44.81\00:15:49.11 easier to reveal things about yourself that you wish later on 00:15:49.14\00:15:54.08 you had not done and/or said things to or about other people 00:15:54.12\00:16:00.26 that you might never do in person. Really social media can 00:16:00.29\00:16:05.06 take over your life in a Nano second if you aren't careful. 00:16:05.09\00:16:09.33 Just anticipating connecting with someone via social media 00:16:09.36\00:16:14.90 can trigger the release of oxytocin as well as dopamine 00:16:14.94\00:16:19.77 the feel-better chemical. People have actually become so involved 00:16:19.81\00:16:25.35 with social media that they've dropped out of school, quit 00:16:25.38\00:16:28.88 their job lived on the street and really checked out of 00:16:28.92\00:16:33.89 reality living in favor of just surfing their favorite sites 00:16:33.92\00:16:39.23 day and night. Many businesses frown on employees checking 00:16:39.26\00:16:43.40 social media frequently when they're supposed to be doing the 00:16:43.43\00:16:47.10 company's work, the work they are being paid to do. And most 00:16:47.14\00:16:52.74 unfortunately cyber harassment and bullying behaviors and other 00:16:52.77\00:16:59.28 negative types of communication have invaded social media. 00:16:59.31\00:17:02.92 Suicide attempts and suicide successes have occurred 00:17:02.95\00:17:08.72 repeatedly and been reported due to cyber harassments and 00:17:08.76\00:17:13.80 bullying. And then there are the unsafe connections that are made 00:17:13.83\00:17:19.10 over the internet that have sometimes resulted in abductions 00:17:19.13\00:17:23.34 even murders. Some individuals have even created a fake 00:17:23.37\00:17:29.74 identity known as a sock puppet in an attempt to avoid 00:17:29.78\00:17:35.75 accountability for what they spew out over the internet or in 00:17:35.78\00:17:40.09 an attempt to remain anonymous. The problem with this is that 00:17:40.12\00:17:45.26 great damage can be done to susceptible individuals and a 00:17:45.29\00:17:50.63 big downside involves something called gas lighting. This term 00:17:50.67\00:17:58.01 was picked up from a 1944 movie in which a man uses various 00:17:58.04\00:18:03.01 techniques in an attempt to make his wife start wondering about 00:18:03.04\00:18:06.68 her own sanity so that he could put her in an institution, have 00:18:06.72\00:18:11.09 her institutionalized. The author of the book Gas lighting 00:18:11.12\00:18:16.06 pointed out that this tactic is commonly seen among dictators, 00:18:16.09\00:18:21.66 narcissists, abusers, and cult leaders who gain power over 00:18:21.70\00:18:29.00 targets by destabilizing people's mental states and 00:18:29.04\00:18:34.78 making them doubt their own perceptions of reality. 00:18:34.81\00:18:38.28 Unfortunately the practice of gaslighting is common on social 00:18:38.31\00:18:44.42 media sites where the perpetrator may disseminate 00:18:44.45\00:18:48.32 inaccuracies, outright lies and disinformation. 00:18:48.36\00:18:53.26 I read that some communication skills have been lost due to 00:18:53.29\00:18:57.53 social media. 00:18:57.57\00:18:58.90 When I talk about social media. I like to talk about face 00:18:58.93\00:19:03.41 to face communication especially that learned ability to put 00:19:03.44\00:19:09.88 people instantly at ease using small talk especially when the 00:19:09.91\00:19:14.78 individuals do not know each other. According to some studies 00:19:14.82\00:19:19.52 this skill is rapidly disappearing. I have sometimes 00:19:19.55\00:19:26.53 talked about with you the fact that there can be two people 00:19:26.56\00:19:31.13 sitting in a restaurant and they're each on their electronic 00:19:31.17\00:19:35.04 devices with hardly any verbal communication. I even asked a 00:19:35.07\00:19:40.01 young couple about that once. And they looked at me like I was 00:19:40.04\00:19:44.08 from another planet. They replied that they were talking 00:19:44.11\00:19:48.68 to each other, they were communicating, they were just 00:19:48.72\00:19:52.62 doing it via their devices. But there was no eye contact, there 00:19:52.65\00:19:58.39 were no facial expressions, there was no laughter, just 00:19:58.43\00:20:04.00 typing with their thumbs. That's not face to face real time 00:20:04.03\00:20:11.17 interaction with one brain with another. And then there is 00:20:11.21\00:20:15.21 phubbing. Do you know the term phubbing Studies have shown that 00:20:15.24\00:20:20.95 ignoring someone in a social situation to look at ones phone 00:20:20.98\00:20:25.15 threatens peoples fundamental need to belong. It's typically 00:20:25.19\00:20:33.46 perceived as a form of social exclusion, making others feel 00:20:33.50\00:20:38.97 invisible, eroding their self esteem. They actually feel less 00:20:39.00\00:20:44.57 important than whomever the other person is communicating 00:20:44.61\00:20:48.01 with electronically. Phubbing has been linked with poor 00:20:48.04\00:20:53.65 communication and lower relationship satisfaction. 00:20:53.68\00:20:57.52 Become of that some organizations require that 00:20:57.55\00:21:02.79 social media electronics must be turned off during important 00:21:02.82\00:21:07.23 business meetings and committee interactions. So how much more 00:21:07.26\00:21:12.40 important to turn that off when you are working on a 00:21:12.43\00:21:17.77 communication relationship with people you love, with family 00:21:17.81\00:21:22.18 members and good friends. My brain's opinion is that even a 00:21:22.21\00:21:27.92 positive thing taken to the extreme or used out of balance 00:21:27.95\00:21:32.12 can become a negative. Social media is one of those things. 00:21:32.15\00:21:38.66 It points out the need to practice disconnecting from 00:21:38.69\00:21:44.30 social media for some period of time every single day. This can 00:21:44.33\00:21:49.77 cause the user to build skills related not only to delaying 00:21:49.80\00:21:55.04 gratification and delaying gratification is critical to 00:21:55.08\00:21:59.61 almost every type of success, but also raising the person's 00:21:59.65\00:22:04.19 level of emotional intelligence judged to be worth 80 percent 00:22:04.22\00:22:09.69 of a person's overall success in life. So in life usually if not 00:22:09.72\00:22:19.70 always you must give up something to get something. 00:22:19.73\00:22:23.07 Maturity involves evaluating what you will get versus what 00:22:23.10\00:22:30.65 you will have to give up when making a decision. So with some 00:22:30.68\00:22:35.68 knowledge and forethought you can attain the benefits 00:22:35.72\00:22:40.22 social media and technology offer while at the same time 00:22:40.26\00:22:44.36 avoiding creating problems for your brain. 00:22:44.39\00:22:48.03 Dr. Taylor it's been a pleasure having you on our program today 00:22:48.06\00:22:52.90 and we're so grateful for all the important information you've 00:22:52.93\00:22:56.20 shared with us. 00:22:56.24\00:22:57.57 Once again, it's a pleasure to chat with you about brain 00:22:57.61\00:23:01.31 function and I encourage people to take the time to do person to 00:23:01.34\00:23:09.82 person, brain to brain communication. It's a different 00:23:09.85\00:23:15.29 type of connection from social media. 00:23:15.32\00:23:21.13 Social media has certainly taken the world by storm and now it's 00:23:21.16\00:23:28.34 hard to imagine a world without the internet, our smart phones 00:23:28.37\00:23:32.41 emails and instant communication In fact, it doesn't matter where 00:23:32.44\00:23:38.18 you go in this world people seem to be attached to their phones. 00:23:38.21\00:23:43.08 The need and desire to communicate is not new to the 00:23:43.12\00:23:48.02 21st century. Way back in the first century the apostle Paul 00:23:48.06\00:23:53.16 wrote some wise words to the people in Thessalonica. Now they 00:23:53.19\00:23:57.60 didn't have social media back then but the principles of 00:23:57.63\00:24:01.27 communication is the same. Here's what Paul wrote in 00:24:01.30\00:24:05.07 1 Thessalonians chapter five and verse 11: 00:24:05.11\00:24:08.74 Here Paul is exhorting the people to only say kind words, 00:24:16.48\00:24:21.86 words that are affirming and helpful and to avoid unkind and 00:24:21.89\00:24:26.19 discouraging words. There's an old Yiddish saying that says: 00:24:26.23\00:24:30.60 Once words have been spoken or sent via social media we cannot 00:24:37.64\00:24:44.18 call them back. Today the powerful platform of social 00:24:44.21\00:24:49.35 media gives us instant words. Sometimes on social media words 00:24:49.38\00:24:54.72 may be sent off quickly, words that you might not think of 00:24:54.76\00:24:59.03 using if you are communicating in person face to face. Let's 00:24:59.06\00:25:03.97 choose to only say or write words that will not discourage, 00:25:04.00\00:25:08.37 disempower or be negative. Let's follow the apostle Paul's advice 00:25:08.40\00:25:13.34 in Ephesians chapter four and verse 29. Here's what he wrote: 00:25:13.38\00:25:18.45 What a difference it would make in our world if only kind and 00:25:32.29\00:25:36.33 intelligent words were said in person or communicated by 00:25:36.36\00:25:40.30 technology. If our comments were positive, helpful and empowering 00:25:40.34\00:25:46.21 So the question then is What aspects of social media are 00:25:46.24\00:25:52.88 positive and provide positive outcomes? And what aspects are 00:25:52.91\00:25:56.85 negative and provide negative outcomes? 00:25:56.89\00:25:59.72 If you would like to know more about the effects of media on 00:25:59.75\00:26:05.46 the brain then I'd like to recommend a free gift we 00:26:05.49\00:26:08.56 have for all our 00:26:08.60\00:26:09.93 Incredible Journey viewers today It's the small booklet Media on 00:26:09.96\00:26:16.37 the Brain.
