He merged them into an empire that lasted for centuries. 00:00:46.47\00:00:50.81 [Battle sounds.] 00:00:56.38\00:01:00.36 This is his story. A story of romance, intrigue, power 00:01:04.09\00:01:09.46 and conquest. 00:01:09.50\00:01:10.83 The life of Constantine the Great is something of a 00:01:40.86\00:01:44.27 miracle story. It's packed full of amazing coincides, 00:01:44.30\00:01:48.27 the most unlikely outcomes, and astonishing achievements. 00:01:48.30\00:01:53.04 He was born to a peasant girl under a cloud of illegitimacy. 00:01:53.07\00:01:57.65 For the first nine years of his life, nobody knew that his 00:01:57.68\00:02:01.85 real father was the governor of Dalmatia an important province 00:02:01.88\00:02:06.29 of the Roman Empire and a position assigned to people 00:02:06.32\00:02:10.26 of power and influence. 00:02:10.29\00:02:11.93 Not only did Constantine eventually come to know his 00:02:11.96\00:02:16.10 real father because of an unexpected altercation with 00:02:16.16\00:02:20.27 some guests of the stable of his grand-father's Inn, but he ended 00:02:20.30\00:02:23.97 up living in, of all places, the very palace of the 00:02:24.01\00:02:28.91 Roman Emperor himself. 00:02:28.94\00:02:30.31 For 12 years Constantine worked directly 00:02:31.28\00:02:34.85 for the emperor Diocletian, he learned how to administer 00:02:34.88\00:02:38.65 an empire and witness first-hand all kinds of momentous events. 00:02:38.69\00:02:43.66 He watched the emperor success- fully crush a rebellion in Egypt 00:02:43.69\00:02:48.06 and he was there when the official persecution of the 00:02:48.10\00:02:51.93 Christians began in the year A.D. 303. 00:02:51.97\00:02:55.94 Unbelievably his own mother became a Christian, then Emperor 00:02:55.97\00:03:01.84 Diocletian unexpectedly abdicated. Constantine saw his 00:03:01.88\00:03:07.12 opportunity to seize power, he fled the palace and 00:03:07.15\00:03:11.22 joined his father in Britain and there in York 00:03:11.25\00:03:15.22 he was crowned Augustus, Ruler of the Western Empire. 00:03:15.26\00:03:20.53 But he wanted more than that, he wanted the entire empire 00:03:20.56\00:03:25.20 and so marched on Rome. 00:03:25.23\00:03:27.34 On the way, he saw a super- natural phenomena in the sky, 00:03:27.37\00:03:32.27 he saw a cross of light super imposed on the sun and attached 00:03:32.31\00:03:37.48 in Greek were the words. 00:03:37.51\00:03:42.75 Now Constantine himself a pagan sun worshiper converts and 00:03:42.78\00:03:49.59 embraces Christianity and his army with his new symbol 00:03:49.62\00:03:54.53 the Chia-Roh emblazoned on their shields is victorious 00:03:54.56\00:03:58.83 at the famous battle of the Milvian Bridge and now the gates 00:03:58.87\00:04:04.27 of Rome lay open before him. 00:04:04.31\00:04:07.21 Constantine, the illegitimate child of a peasant girl 00:04:07.24\00:04:12.58 is now the most powerful man on earth, the Emperor of Rome. 00:04:12.61\00:04:17.59 And what he does next will change the world forever. 00:04:17.62\00:04:22.69 Constantine's victory at the Battle of the Millville Bridge 00:04:57.99\00:05:00.90 was to define the world we live in today it was a turning point 00:05:00.93\00:05:05.87 in history. Constantine the Great has influenced the way 00:05:05.90\00:05:10.97 we think the way we live and what we believe. 00:05:11.01\00:05:14.88 He was a Game Changer. He was strongly influenced 00:05:14.91\00:05:21.52 by his mother's religion and credited the Christian God 00:05:21.55\00:05:25.35 with being responsible for his victory. 00:05:25.39\00:05:27.59 In return, Constantine pulled Christianity out of the shadows 00:05:27.62\00:05:33.80 and made it the premier religion of the Roman Empire 00:05:33.83\00:05:37.33 Shortly after defeating Maxentius at the 00:05:37.37\00:05:41.70 Battle of the Milvian Bridge Constantine entered Rome 00:05:41.74\00:05:45.61 he proved himself remarkably generous and magnanimous to his 00:05:45.64\00:05:50.45 former enemies that included the senate of Rome who had 00:05:50.48\00:05:54.95 supported Maxentius. Instead of exacting revenge 00:05:54.98\00:05:58.55 and executing the senators Constantine promised to restore 00:05:58.59\00:06:02.49 them to their former power and glory. 00:06:02.52\00:06:05.39 The senate was so grateful that it commissioned the 00:06:05.43\00:06:09.20 construction of the Arch of Constantine. 00:06:09.23\00:06:12.13 This magnificent monument that you can still 00:06:12.17\00:06:15.77 visit in the heart of Rome today. 00:06:15.80\00:06:18.31 That day when Constantine rode victoriously into Rome 00:06:18.34\00:06:23.28 was the day that the paths of Jesus and Constantine finally 00:06:23.31\00:06:28.25 met decisively, it was a clash of empires, Rome and 00:06:28.28\00:06:34.99 Christianity, it was a clash of cultures, beliefs and faiths 00:06:35.02\00:06:38.49 but there's a strange twist to this clash of empires... 00:06:38.53\00:06:43.33 What happened next was so explosive that it changed 00:06:43.37\00:06:49.14 everything, it changed the Roman Empire, the Christian Church, 00:06:49.17\00:06:53.74 world politics, and the way we see the world today 00:06:53.78\00:06:58.51 Constantine made the radical decision to merge these two 00:06:58.55\00:07:04.02 empires, to combine them into one but there's more to it 00:07:04.05\00:07:09.86 than meets the eye. 00:07:09.89\00:07:11.53 You see, under Constantine the Christian religion changed 00:07:18.30\00:07:22.77 because the Prince of Peace had now become The Roman God of War. 00:07:22.80\00:07:27.74 Jesus moved from being the God of the outcast and persecuted 00:07:27.78\00:07:33.01 to the God of the Roman Empire. 00:07:33.05\00:07:36.55 Under Constantine Christians were no longer a fringe group 00:07:36.58\00:07:41.79 instead, they are at the heart of the empire itself. 00:07:41.82\00:07:45.73 Constantine's Edict of Milan in A.D. 313 gave Christians 00:07:45.76\00:07:51.67 freedom of religion and equal rights throughout the empire 00:07:51.70\00:07:55.47 he appointed Christians to high office and gave Christian 00:07:55.50\00:07:59.97 priests the same privileges as pagan ones... 00:08:00.01\00:08:03.35 Christians were given the keys to Imperial Power. 00:08:03.38\00:08:08.62 Constantine quickly went on to conquer the rest of the empire 00:08:08.65\00:08:13.69 and reunite all of Rome's lands under one banner 00:08:13.72\00:08:18.19 he became its sole ruler, the most powerful man 00:08:18.23\00:08:21.86 on earth. 00:08:21.90\00:08:23.83 Though Constantine would prove to be a good emperor, 00:08:23.87\00:08:27.10 the most important consequence of his victory was religious. 00:08:27.14\00:08:31.57 Constantine knew that he was going to have to find some way 00:08:31.61\00:08:36.34 to keep the vast empire together some way to achieve harmony 00:08:36.38\00:08:42.22 enter Christianity. Constantine admired the Christian strength 00:08:42.25\00:08:48.82 commitment and endurance, he was also impressed by their unity 00:08:48.86\00:08:53.73 he had seen the way they stood together against 00:08:53.76\00:08:56.46 persecution, they appeared so perfectly united, so perfectly 00:08:56.50\00:09:01.80 in agreement that nothing could make them fall and that's 00:09:01.84\00:09:07.08 what he wanted for his empire and he quickly realized 00:09:07.11\00:09:11.35 that if he could only use Christianity to create a 00:09:11.38\00:09:14.98 population which was as dedicated to the empire 00:09:15.02\00:09:17.79 as the Christians were to Christ. It would seal and secure 00:09:17.82\00:09:22.19 his imperial authority. His strategy was clear and simple 00:09:22.22\00:09:28.00 Constantine would try to hold the empire together 00:09:28.03\00:09:31.93 by uniting pagans and Christians in one great system of religion. 00:09:31.97\00:09:37.37 However, if Constantine did ever convert to Christianity 00:09:37.41\00:09:43.21 himself, his fate was hardly worthy of the Prince of Peace. 00:09:43.24\00:09:47.58 Constantine had no problem murdering relatives whom he 00:09:47.62\00:09:53.42 considered political threats and that included his wife 00:09:53.46\00:09:58.29 and son. His 21 year old son Crispus had just won a brilliant 00:09:58.33\00:10:04.17 military victory. Constantine may have felt threatened by his 00:10:04.20\00:10:08.80 rising popularity so Constantine had him put to death. 00:10:08.84\00:10:12.91 Then he murdered his wife by basically boiling her in a 00:10:12.94\00:10:17.78 hot bathtub. Remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:20. 00:10:17.81\00:10:24.52 There's no question that Constantine knew about the 00:10:29.39\00:10:33.46 Christian God, he respected the faith and admired the 00:10:33.50\00:10:37.63 dedication of Christians however respecting God and submitting 00:10:37.67\00:10:42.94 your life and will to Him are two different things. 00:10:42.97\00:10:46.31 Constantine believed that if he could merge the Christian Church 00:10:46.34\00:10:50.58 with Rome and this would be the recipe to long-term political 00:10:50.61\00:10:55.42 stability so he became actively involved in church affairs 00:10:55.45\00:11:00.66 and administration. 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.22 The state and the church became more and more entwined 00:11:02.26\00:11:06.80 and interlocked. Back then Egypt was a hotbed of controversy 00:11:06.83\00:11:15.27 among Christians and a contentious issue arose 00:11:15.30\00:11:18.91 that caused deep division and threatened the unity 00:11:18.94\00:11:22.51 of the church. The dispute centered around where the 00:11:22.54\00:11:27.08 Christians who had given up their faith and left the church 00:11:27.12\00:11:30.15 during the earlier persecution should be allowed back into 00:11:30.19\00:11:34.09 the church now that the persecution had ended 00:11:34.12\00:11:37.23 and it was safe to be a Christian again. 00:11:37.26\00:11:39.69 Those who had stayed in the church called those who had 00:11:39.73\00:11:44.50 caved in under the persecution and left the church 00:11:44.53\00:11:48.07 Traditores that's actually where the word Traitor comes from. 00:11:48.10\00:11:53.38 The Bishop there was in favor of letting them back in 00:11:53.41\00:11:57.55 but the hard-line Christians who didn't want the traitors 00:11:57.58\00:12:01.18 back in, wanted their own man to be the Bishop 00:12:01.22\00:12:04.49 his name was Donatus Magnus that's why this was called 00:12:04.52\00:12:09.82 the Donatus Controversy. 00:12:09.86\00:12:12.13 The controversy was threatening to tear the church 00:12:12.16\00:12:16.13 apart and when the warring factions couldn't solve the 00:12:16.16\00:12:19.63 problem themselves, they asked the emperor to step in 00:12:19.67\00:12:23.24 and resolve this internal church dispute. 00:12:23.27\00:12:26.44 This was a pivotal moment, a radical departure 00:12:26.47\00:12:31.21 from how Christians previously resolved their internal 00:12:31.25\00:12:35.38 disputes. The state had given the church religious liberty and 00:12:35.42\00:12:40.06 now the church had put the power over its internal affairs 00:12:40.09\00:12:43.96 in the hands of the state. 00:12:43.99\00:12:46.26 In A.D. 314, Constantine called all the bishops from 00:12:46.29\00:12:52.23 across the empire to help decide the matter 00:12:52.27\00:12:55.30 and the case went against the Donatus, it went in favor of 00:12:55.34\00:12:59.71 allowing the traitors back into the church. 00:12:59.74\00:13:02.94 But the Donatus wouldn't accept their decision and Constantine 00:13:02.98\00:13:07.75 was furious. He threatened them with severe consequences 00:13:07.78\00:13:12.25 if they didn't fall into line. 00:13:12.29\00:13:14.32 This was the first time that the force of the state 00:13:14.36\00:13:19.03 had been threatened in order to settle an internal church 00:13:19.06\00:13:23.47 dispute. The state was getting more and more involved 00:13:23.50\00:13:27.07 in church affairs and the emperor wanted to establish 00:13:27.10\00:13:31.11 a unified definition of what Christians believe. 00:13:31.14\00:13:34.68 And so he organized and personally attended the 00:13:34.71\00:13:38.11 Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325. 00:13:38.15\00:13:41.55 It was held in modern-day Turkey and is one of the most important 00:13:41.58\00:13:46.39 church councils in history. Early Christians had always 00:13:46.42\00:13:50.56 determined their beliefs based on what the Bible proved 00:13:50.59\00:13:54.43 and fortunately their well- established Bible position 00:13:54.46\00:13:58.07 on the divinity of Christ and the books of the Bible 00:13:58.10\00:14:01.40 were accepted at Nicaea but now a change began to take place. 00:14:01.44\00:14:07.18 The state and outside influences rather than the Bible 00:14:07.21\00:14:12.31 began to interfere and determine what the church believed. 00:14:12.35\00:14:16.28 The Bible was no longer the authority in religious matters, 00:14:16.32\00:14:21.86 the emperor himself had a say and played a major role. 00:14:21.89\00:14:26.39 The Council of Nicaea helped to underscore Constantine's 00:14:26.43\00:14:30.97 new role as the head of the Christian church 00:14:31.00\00:14:33.74 and helped to seal the marriage of church and state 00:14:33.77\00:14:36.91 that would define the church from that day forward. 00:14:36.94\00:14:40.98 But the standard for truth for Christians is not the state, 00:14:41.01\00:14:45.41 not the emperor, but the scriptures, the Bible. 00:14:45.45\00:14:49.68 Here's what is says in 2Timothy chapter 3 verses 16 and 17. 00:14:49.72\00:14:55.02 Starting from Constantine however, the Christian church 00:15:12.87\00:15:16.75 was flooded with opportunity seekers from the general Roman 00:15:16.78\00:15:20.75 public. That was because Christianity now had the favor 00:15:20.78\00:15:26.15 of the emperor. Christianity became popular so much so 00:15:26.19\00:15:32.03 that pagans were baptized into the church. 00:15:32.06\00:15:34.83 Now the term paganism was first used in the 4th century by 00:15:34.86\00:15:40.04 early Christians to describe people in the Roman Empire 00:15:40.07\00:15:44.14 who practiced Polytheism, that is, who worship many Gods 00:15:44.17\00:15:49.24 rather than the one true God that the Christians worshipped. 00:15:49.28\00:15:53.52 These pagans joined the church but they also brought many 00:15:53.55\00:15:57.92 of their pagan images, beliefs and practices with them. 00:15:57.95\00:16:01.42 Here's what one historian writes. 00:16:01.46\00:16:03.66 Here's another historian, Bruce Shelley in his book 00:16:27.02\00:16:30.99 Church History in plain language. 00:16:31.02\00:16:33.25 This is the record of History, the facts are clear 00:16:51.97\00:16:55.18 here's another historian. 00:16:55.21\00:16:57.61 And so quietly and gradually beliefs, practices, and 00:17:08.46\00:17:14.56 doctrines that had never been taught by Jesus, 00:17:14.60\00:17:17.33 doctrines that are not found in the Bible crept into the church. 00:17:17.37\00:17:21.57 False teachings crept into the church and many of the 00:17:21.60\00:17:26.04 great truths Jesus gave were lost. 00:17:26.07\00:17:29.38 The church, the fortress of truth that Jesus and the 00:17:29.41\00:17:33.95 apostles built was weakened and reduced to ruins by the 00:17:33.98\00:17:38.79 insidious introduction and spread of pagan objects, 00:17:38.82\00:17:42.09 beliefs and practices. And by accommodating paganism 00:17:42.12\00:17:47.60 and compromising with the state, what our Christian ancestors did 00:17:47.63\00:17:52.03 was to launch what we might call a substitute empire. 00:17:52.07\00:17:56.40 It looked like Christianity, it sounded like Christianity, 00:17:56.44\00:18:00.41 but it had some real problems, it was an imposter, a 00:18:00.44\00:18:06.72 counterfeit. Roman style politics and paganism had found 00:18:06.75\00:18:11.12 their way into the Christian Church and its governments. 00:18:11.15\00:18:13.46 Over the years the church became less about fulfilling the 00:18:13.49\00:18:18.73 gospel commission and looking forward to the return of Christ 00:18:18.76\00:18:21.96 and more about the earthly governments. 00:18:22.00\00:18:25.07 With the Roman Emperor at the head of the church 00:18:25.10\00:18:28.14 Christians began to handle matters the same way that 00:18:28.17\00:18:31.91 Constantine did based out of using coercion and force 00:18:31.94\00:18:36.38 rather than persuasion. 00:18:36.41\00:18:38.28 The persecution and killing of other Christians by Christians 00:18:38.31\00:18:43.69 using state-sanctioned force began from the time of 00:18:43.72\00:18:47.96 Constantine. But that wasn't what Jesus taught, 00:18:47.99\00:18:52.16 rather He said this in Matthew chapter 22:21. 00:18:52.19\00:18:57.40 But with Constantine, Christians started burying the lines 00:19:05.24\00:19:10.25 between what belonged to God and what belonged to Caesar. 00:19:10.28\00:19:13.92 Constantine was willing to sacrifice the teachings of the 00:19:13.95\00:19:18.42 Bible in order to make it as easy as possible for pagans 00:19:18.45\00:19:23.19 to join the church. 00:19:23.22\00:19:24.63 This included transferring many of the holy pagan days 00:19:24.66\00:19:29.36 to Christianity in order to make it easier for pagans to convert 00:19:29.40\00:19:33.67 that's why the most holy days in the Christian colander 00:19:33.70\00:19:37.41 all have their origins in paganism. Constantine just took 00:19:37.44\00:19:43.41 the pagan holy days and gave them a different name 00:19:43.45\00:19:46.68 but kept their pagan traditions and symbols. 00:19:46.72\00:19:50.15 In A.D. 321 Constantine even passed a law forbidding work 00:19:50.19\00:19:56.42 on Sunday, the law said. 00:19:56.46\00:19:59.59 When Constantine passed that law while he was influenced by 00:20:08.94\00:20:13.74 Christianity he hadn't forsaken paganism either, 00:20:13.78\00:20:17.35 that's probably why he referred to the first day of the week 00:20:17.38\00:20:21.42 as the venerable day of the sun. 00:20:21.45\00:20:25.05 The first day of the week was considered sacred to the sun god 00:20:25.09\00:20:29.12 by the ancient Romans, that's why we call it Sunday today. 00:20:29.16\00:20:35.23 What Constantine did was Christianize it 00:20:35.26\00:20:38.93 and then use the force of the state to make it mandatory. 00:20:38.97\00:20:43.04 Here's how historians record it. 00:20:43.07\00:20:45.67 Four years later at Nicaea Constantine did the same with 00:21:04.69\00:21:11.07 Easter. It was originally a pagan festival, it pre-dated 00:21:11.10\00:21:15.60 Christ by thousands of years and was associated with 00:21:15.64\00:21:19.57 re-birth and fertility using rabbits and eggs as its symbols. 00:21:19.61\00:21:24.08 At the Council of Nicaea in A. D. 325, it was adopted 00:21:24.11\00:21:29.58 as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. 00:21:29.62\00:21:33.36 It was officially confirmed as a Christian celebration 00:21:33.39\00:21:38.03 and tied to the Lunar cycle. According to the Easter rule, 00:21:38.06\00:21:43.70 it had to be celebrated on the first Sunday that occurs 00:21:43.73\00:21:47.64 after the full moon on or after the vernal equinox. 00:21:47.67\00:21:52.64 Then Christmas was officially adopted as a Christian 00:21:52.67\00:21:57.08 celebration during this period as well, 00:21:57.11\00:22:00.12 no one knows the real birthday of Jesus, no date is given 00:22:00.15\00:22:04.42 in the Bible. The pagans celebrated the birth of Mithra, 00:22:04.45\00:22:09.09 the sun god on the 25th of December. 00:22:09.12\00:22:12.23 So under Constantine, it was accepted the birthday of Jesus 00:22:12.26\00:22:18.03 and the church in Rome began formally celebrating Christmas 00:22:18.07\00:22:22.84 on the 25th of December in A.D. 336. 00:22:22.87\00:22:27.51 And so with all this happening the two empires merged, 00:22:27.54\00:22:32.48 Christianity and Rome became entwined and interlocked. 00:22:32.51\00:22:37.35 Due to Constantine, many of our Christian holy days, 00:22:37.39\00:22:41.36 symbols, traditions, customs and beliefs have pagan DNA. 00:22:41.39\00:22:47.33 Constantine's victory over the Battle of the Milvian Bridge 00:22:47.36\00:22:51.73 has defined the world we live in today, 00:22:51.77\00:22:55.47 it was a turning point in history. 00:22:55.50\00:22:58.64 Constantine the Great has influenced the way we think, 00:22:58.67\00:23:06.31 the way we live, and what we believe. 00:23:06.35\00:23:09.95 That's the testimony of history, his fingerprints are everywhere. 00:23:09.98\00:23:15.26 Here's the report of church authority Cardinal Henry Newman. 00:23:15.29\00:23:21.06 Now should this surprise us? Didn't the Bible predict that 00:23:34.91\00:23:38.61 this very thing would happen to the church? 00:23:38.65\00:23:41.42 Notice the warning of Peter the apostle in 2 Peter 2:1,2. 00:23:41.45\00:23:48.36 Paul also predicted that the great truths of the Bible 00:23:59.27\00:24:04.07 would suffer and that new false teachings would enter the 00:24:04.11\00:24:08.04 church. Notice what he said in Acts 20: verse 29. 00:24:08.08\00:24:13.28 The apostle Paul warned that after his death changes and 00:24:23.19\00:24:27.80 compromise would way-lay the church and this is exactly 00:24:27.83\00:24:32.10 what took place, just as the Bible predicted. 00:24:32.13\00:24:35.14 But there were Christians in the empire who heeded 00:24:35.17\00:24:39.04 the Bible's warning, they rejected the changes and 00:24:39.07\00:24:42.51 paganism introduced by Constantine and others 00:24:42.54\00:24:46.11 they determined to remain true to the Bible and its teachings, 00:24:46.15\00:24:51.22 they remained faithful to Jesus. 00:24:51.25\00:24:53.62 There were two empires Caesar's and Christ's, those faithful 00:24:53.66\00:25:00.66 early Christians made their decision, they decided which 00:25:00.70\00:25:04.57 empire they were going to belong to. 00:25:04.60\00:25:06.94 It's described in the Bible book of Daniel 2:44. 00:25:06.97\00:25:12.24 Those early Christians remembered the promise of Jesus 00:25:32.23\00:25:35.73 found in Luke 12: 32. 00:25:35.76\00:25:39.17 If you would like to know more about the amazing promise given 00:25:47.24\00:25:53.21 by Jesus to the early Christians and how the birth of two great 00:25:53.25\00:25:57.39 empires resulted in a clash that's changed the course of 00:25:57.42\00:26:01.96 history, then I'd like to recommend a free gift we have 00:26:01.99\00:26:05.69 for all our Incredible Journey viewers today. 00:26:05.73\00:26:10.10 It's the booklet One World Two Empires. 00:26:10.13\00:26:14.77 It will take you behind the scenes and give you a 00:26:14.80\00:26:18.24 totally new perspective on what's taking place in our world 00:26:18.27\00:26:22.24 right now.
