¤ ¤ 00:00:01.36\00:00:26.32 We are living in a time of almost unprecedented global 00:00:26.35\00:00:29.92 crisis. A time when the world is swirling in a fog of panic and 00:00:29.96\00:00:34.90 uncertainty hopping from one alarming statistic to the next. 00:00:34.93\00:00:39.93 A time when fear is so palpable that it leads people to behave 00:00:39.97\00:00:45.77 in strange and bizarre ways. On the 11th of March 2020, the 00:00:45.81\00:00:51.08 World Health Organization declared the Coronavirus a 00:00:51.11\00:00:55.25 global pandemic and since then we have seen the world turn into 00:00:55.28\00:01:00.76 a state of chaos that hadn't been witnessed since Hitler 00:01:00.79\00:01:04.03 first swept into Poland. Across the globe world leaders are 00:01:04.06\00:01:10.70 scrambling to protect their citizens from an intangible 00:01:10.73\00:01:14.67 enemy while struggling to keep their economies from collapsing. 00:01:14.70\00:01:19.51 Entire countries have been placed in lockdown leaving 00:01:19.54\00:01:23.71 streets deserted and city centers looking like ghost towns 00:01:23.75\00:01:29.95 Thousands are rushing to their local grocery stores frantically 00:01:29.98\00:01:34.22 snapping up every essential item they can think of. Shelves 00:01:34.26\00:01:38.46 across the world are bare and stripped clean. Strained health 00:01:38.49\00:01:44.10 care systems are staggering under the influx of patients as 00:01:44.13\00:01:48.80 doctors and nurses try desperately to save the most 00:01:48.84\00:01:52.57 vulnerable among us. So what do we do during this time of 00:01:52.61\00:01:58.11 unprecedented global crisis? What precautions should we take 00:01:58.15\00:02:03.42 to help slow the spread of the virus and what steps can we take 00:02:03.45\00:02:08.26 to mitigate the rising tide of fear swelling around us. Join us 00:02:08.29\00:02:13.80 this week as we take a look at the Covid-19, its symptoms, how 00:02:13.83\00:02:19.77 to prevent its spread and how we can have peace and hope 00:02:19.80\00:02:24.37 during this time of uncertainty and fear. 00:02:24.41\00:02:27.21 ¤ ¤ 00:02:27.24\00:02:47.36 The coronavirus pandemic began in Wuhan, China at a sprawling 00:02:47.40\00:02:52.53 wet market selling wildlife and seafood in the center of the 00:02:52.57\00:02:56.10 city. The market, like so many others across Asia, was known 00:02:56.14\00:03:01.04 for selling live exotic animals on sight. Some sources report 00:03:01.08\00:03:06.85 that the illness may have been transferred from a bat most 00:03:06.88\00:03:10.65 likely to one of the shoppers at the market. Before long the 00:03:10.69\00:03:14.82 illness exploded across China before spreading like wildfire 00:03:14.86\00:03:19.49 around the world. But health experts warn that this state of 00:03:19.53\00:03:25.13 affairs could take a turn for the worse if the appropriate 00:03:25.17\00:03:29.27 steps are not taken to mitigate the spread of the disease. So 00:03:29.30\00:03:34.88 far the federal government has taken steps to shut down social 00:03:34.91\00:03:40.02 gatherings and nonessential services to try to contain the 00:03:40.05\00:03:44.79 spread of the disease. So what can you and I do to help flatten 00:03:44.82\00:03:49.99 the curve. That is to help slow down the rate at which the 00:03:50.03\00:03:54.30 disease spreads so that the Australian health care system 00:03:54.33\00:03:58.33 can deal with the crisis and ensure the least amount of 00:03:58.37\00:04:03.71 fatalities. Well there are a number of things that we can all 00:04:03.74\00:04:07.24 do to help. Joining us today is Dr. Anthony Espinet one of the 00:04:07.28\00:04:13.92 leading physicians of the world. He's a senior medical doctor, a 00:04:13.95\00:04:19.09 senior pain management consultant and associate 00:04:19.12\00:04:22.72 professor with Bond University Medical School and a senior 00:04:22.76\00:04:26.39 lecturer with Griffith University Medical School 00:04:26.43\00:04:29.86 on the Gulf Coast, 00:04:29.90\00:04:31.23 Queensland, Australia. We decided to ask him a few 00:04:33.23\00:04:35.44 questions about the virus itself and also the steps that we can 00:04:35.47\00:04:39.77 each take to prevent it's spread Hello Dr. Espinet. Thanks for 00:04:39.81\00:04:45.91 taking time from your busy schedule to talk to us today. 00:04:45.95\00:04:49.82 Thank you very much Gary. I'm glad to be here. 00:04:49.85\00:04:52.19 Can you tell us, how does the virus spread? Does it spread 00:04:52.22\00:04:55.72 any differently to other viruses? 00:04:55.76\00:04:58.69 So the virus spreads like all other infectious communoviruses. 00:04:58.73\00:05:03.47 Which means it spreads by droplets, coughs, sneezes, you 00:05:03.50\00:05:09.44 know sputum's and spit and so on. So those are the reasons we 00:05:09.47\00:05:13.11 just try to express human to human contact and that is what 00:05:13.14\00:05:17.05 is so important in terms of how you would manage the condition 00:05:17.08\00:05:20.75 because it is by contact through droplets. 00:05:20.78\00:05:22.92 How long does it take to show symptoms once you've been 00:05:22.95\00:05:27.06 infected? 00:05:27.09\00:05:28.52 So most of the symptoms are symptoms of a flu-like illness. 00:05:28.56\00:05:32.76 So a cough, some people get a sore throat, some people will 00:05:32.79\00:05:36.63 get a fever, fatigue. Things that represent a normal illness. 00:05:36.67\00:05:42.07 Those are like we would see in most cases. Some people actually 00:05:42.10\00:05:45.51 present with a bit of diarrheal disease but those are a very 00:05:45.54\00:05:50.18 small group. In terms of the most severe illnesses it will be 00:05:50.21\00:05:53.78 severe respiratory conditions where people present with 00:05:53.82\00:05:56.89 shortness of breath. They could present with pneumonia-like 00:05:56.92\00:05:59.75 symptoms. Some people, because of that, get blue lips and blue 00:05:59.79\00:06:04.06 hands and so on. Those are severe conditions and those are 00:06:04.09\00:06:07.10 the people that need hospital attention pretty quickly in 00:06:07.13\00:06:10.93 order to intervene and unfortunately some of those 00:06:10.97\00:06:14.80 people will succumb to the disease. 00:06:14.84\00:06:16.71 How long is the incubation period for the virus? 00:06:16.74\00:06:20.18 So the incubation period is anywhere between 2 and 14 days. 00:06:20.21\00:06:26.82 It seems to vary from different places. So in different 00:06:26.85\00:06:28.28 countries the incubation seems to vary. There are reports of 00:06:28.32\00:06:32.79 incubation going as long as 24 days, a month. What we do know 00:06:32.82\00:06:37.73 is that a person can share the virus up to 24 hours before they 00:06:37.76\00:06:43.80 show symptoms or they could have a mild symptoms and be sharing 00:06:43.83\00:06:48.57 the virus. So again it underlies the big issue of this particular 00:06:48.60\00:06:53.34 virus. Not only is it highly contagious, not only is there 00:06:53.38\00:06:56.91 no immune response into the population. You can start 00:06:56.95\00:07:02.58 sharing the virus and basically spreading the disease to someone 00:07:02.62\00:07:07.56 else when you don't know that you have it and your symptoms 00:07:07.59\00:07:11.03 are mild or nonexistent. 00:07:11.06\00:07:12.39 That can go on for up to 6 to fourteen days. The current 00:07:12.43\00:07:16.06 guidelines is that 14 days is a sort of time that we feel 00:07:16.10\00:07:22.20 that they are symptom free that time. They very much don't have 00:07:22.24\00:07:26.68 it which is why, as you know, the current periods and 00:07:26.71\00:07:30.38 recommendations for isolation is 14 days. 00:07:30.81\00:07:35.28 What are some things that we can do to protect ourselves and 00:07:35.32\00:07:37.25 others from getting the virus? 00:07:37.29\00:07:39.75 There are five things you can do rather quickly that will 00:07:39.79\00:07:42.29 help us in managing 00:07:42.32\00:07:43.66 this condition. Number One is wash hands. Number two: Cover 00:07:43.69\00:07:49.63 coughs and sneezes. Number three stay home if you are 00:07:49.66\00:07:54.57 sick. Number four: Try not to touch hard and public surfaces 00:07:54.60\00:07:59.61 because that's where the disease will rest. And number five good 00:07:59.64\00:08:03.95 social distancing. And those five things if you just follow 00:08:03.98\00:08:06.48 that we'd see a great management and reduction of the condition 00:08:06.51\00:08:10.05 that we are dealing with. People have to be socially responsible. 00:08:10.09\00:08:12.92 For themselves, for their families, for their community 00:08:12.95\00:08:17.19 Dr. Espinet, thank you for sharing your knowledge and 00:08:17.23\00:08:21.43 expertise with us today. It's been a privilege to have you 00:08:21.46\00:08:25.50 on our program. 00:08:25.53\00:08:26.87 Thank you very much, Gary. It's been a pleasure being here. 00:08:26.90\00:08:29.04 With the world plunging deeper and deeper into a state of 00:08:29.07\00:08:34.28 unprecedented fear and uncertainty people all over 00:08:34.31\00:08:38.41 the planet are 00:08:38.45\00:08:39.88 looking for a sense of safety and security, an elusive sense 00:08:39.91\00:08:45.05 of certainty that seems just within their grasp. With a virus 00:08:45.09\00:08:50.86 like Covid-19 raging through our nations and neighborhoods it's 00:08:50.89\00:08:54.66 important for us to realize that viral epidemics create emotional 00:08:54.70\00:09:00.64 and spiritual epidemics in their wake. These epidemics tho' 00:09:00.67\00:09:06.47 intangible are sometimes harder to combat. So what's the biggest 00:09:06.51\00:09:11.11 social pandemic the world is facing right now? In a word, 00:09:11.15\00:09:16.32 it is fear. Over the last days and weeks the global media has 00:09:16.35\00:09:22.82 splashed dramatic photographs all across the internet and 00:09:22.86\00:09:27.86 news. Bare shelves in super markets, frantic shoppers 00:09:27.90\00:09:31.47 fighting each other for a single pack of toilet paper, frenzied 00:09:31.50\00:09:37.34 hoarding of thousands of bottles of hand sanitizer. But what is 00:09:37.37\00:09:41.01 behind all the crazy behavior? The climate of uncertainty and 00:09:41.04\00:09:47.52 desperation created by Covid-19 is fueling the sense of panic 00:09:47.55\00:09:51.99 and fear across the world and thousands of people are 00:09:52.02\00:09:56.83 struggling to fight against the overwhelming tide. Just like 00:09:56.86\00:10:01.56 viral epidemic, the social epidemic of fear is contagious 00:10:01.60\00:10:07.00 spreading from person to person at an alarming rate. Just like 00:10:07.04\00:10:11.91 the viral epidemic, the social epidemic of fear is also 00:10:11.94\00:10:16.64 triggered by little causes. Frenzied buying of essential 00:10:16.68\00:10:21.35 items in a single supermarket can trigger a chain reaction of 00:10:21.38\00:10:26.52 panic buying across the entire city and then the entire state 00:10:26.55\00:10:31.16 and then the entire nation. This is what sociologists call the 00:10:31.19\00:10:37.30 tipping point. The boiling point when everything that seems to 00:10:37.33\00:10:42.67 fairly calm tips over into something that is almost 00:10:42.70\00:10:47.84 unstoppable. Mark Granovetter a professor of sociology at 00:10:47.88\00:10:52.51 Stanford University presents his thesis for this kind of 00:10:52.55\00:10:56.65 collective behavior in the American Journal of Sociology. 00:10:56.69\00:11:00.86 In his article, Granovetter talks about how sometimes 00:11:00.89\00:11:06.59 people are compelled to make decisions they would never 00:11:06.63\00:11:10.93 usually make, simply because everyone around them 00:11:10.97\00:11:14.07 is doing so. 00:11:14.10\00:11:15.70 In other words, while we may not be concerned if one or two 00:11:15.74\00:11:20.31 people around you are panic- buying toilet paper in a frenzy 00:11:20.34\00:11:24.85 when that number gradually starts to increase to 10 and 00:11:24.88\00:11:28.88 then 20 or 30, you might start feeling nervous. As the number 00:11:28.92\00:11:34.59 of people panic-buying grows their fear becomes a viral agent 00:11:34.62\00:11:39.69 igniting fear in your own heart making you wonder if you need 00:11:39.73\00:11:44.87 to run to the store and buy up some toilet paper in case there 00:11:44.90\00:11:49.04 is a real shortage. Fear is a greater contagion as the tiny 00:11:49.07\00:11:54.48 viral particles floating around in the air in the aftermath 00:11:54.51\00:11:58.58 of a sneeze. 00:11:58.61\00:12:00.12 It is pervasive, paralyzing and all consuming. So what can we do 00:12:00.15\00:12:07.12 to stem the tide of this social epidemic? Well as certainly as 00:12:07.16\00:12:12.39 there are measures that we can take to slow down the spread of 00:12:12.43\00:12:15.33 of a viral epidemic, there are also measures that we can take 00:12:15.36\00:12:19.50 to slow down the rising tide of fear that is escalating all 00:12:19.53\00:12:24.81 around us. The Bible gives us so many valuable insights into 00:12:24.84\00:12:30.31 managing and overcoming fear. Let's walk thru a few examples 00:12:30.35\00:12:35.32 of how men and women of faith managed to overcome their fear 00:12:35.35\00:12:40.66 and find peace in the midst of the most turbulent storm. The 00:12:40.69\00:12:46.06 first story we'll look at is the story of David and Goliath 00:12:46.09\00:12:49.60 found in I Samuel chapter 17. At a glance the story of 00:12:49.63\00:12:55.90 David and Goliath is the story of a underdog battling against 00:12:55.94\00:13:00.68 a formidable opponent and coming away victorious. But on a 00:13:00.71\00:13:05.98 deeper level it is also the story of a young man who was 00:13:06.01\00:13:09.78 courageous in the face of fear. The story begins with the 00:13:09.82\00:13:13.52 Philistine and Israelite armies camped on either side of the 00:13:13.56\00:13:17.59 Valley of Elah ready to engage in battle. But instead of 00:13:17.63\00:13:22.93 charging down into the valley and engaging in battle, the 00:13:22.96\00:13:26.67 Philistines throw a wild card. They send out their champion 00:13:26.70\00:13:31.94 a three meter giant whose armor along weighed over 50 kilograms. 00:13:31.97\00:13:38.68 The champions name was Goliath of Gath and standing on the 00:13:38.71\00:13:43.28 valley floor he shouted out a challenge to the Israelite army 00:13:43.32\00:13:47.42 to send down a single champion from their ranks to face him 00:13:47.46\00:13:51.96 in hand-to-hand combat. If the Israelite champion defeated him 00:13:51.99\00:13:57.57 then Goliath claimed that the Philistines would surrender the 00:13:57.60\00:14:01.64 battle, but if Goliath defeated the Israelite contender then the 00:14:01.67\00:14:08.34 Israelites were required to lay down their arms and surrender. 00:14:08.38\00:14:13.21 Fear spread through the camp like a contagion washing over 00:14:13.25\00:14:18.92 the heart of every able bodied Israelite warrior. Looking at 00:14:18.95\00:14:21.92 the giant they all knew instinctively that to engage him 00:14:21.96\00:14:26.63 in hand-to-hand combat was a death sentence and none of them 00:14:26.66\00:14:30.57 wanted to undertake what they believed was a suicide mission. 00:14:30.60\00:14:35.04 And so they waited quailing and quivering in their camp while 00:14:35.07\00:14:40.61 every single day Goliath came out onto the valley floor, 00:14:40.64\00:14:45.55 shouted out his challenge and mocked them, their God and their 00:14:45.58\00:14:50.59 faith openly. It was an uphauling, disheartening 00:14:50.62\00:14:55.09 situation. 00:14:55.12\00:14:56.56 But no one wanted to die and no one was able to muster up the 00:14:56.59\00:15:00.70 courage to face the bellowing giant screaming at them from the 00:15:00.73\00:15:05.17 valley floor. That is until David entered the picture. 00:15:05.20\00:15:12.34 David was running an errand for his father when he first heard 00:15:12.37\00:15:15.54 Goliath's threats. His father, wondering how all his 00:15:15.58\00:15:20.42 sons were faring in battle, dispatched David, the youngest 00:15:20.45\00:15:24.35 to take his brothers some food. David was in the middle of his 00:15:24.39\00:15:28.52 reunion with his brothers when Goliath swaggered out to his 00:15:28.56\00:15:33.19 uusual spot and bellowed out his threats. Listening to the 00:15:33.23\00:15:38.53 giant's tirade David was filled with anger and determination. 00:15:38.57\00:15:43.24 He vowed that he would face Goliath in hand-to-hand combat 00:15:43.27\00:15:48.28 and defeat him. His brothers scoffed at him and King 00:15:48.31\00:15:53.11 Saul was terrified for him, but finally relented and agreed to 00:15:53.15\00:15:58.82 let David go out into battle. Armed with nothing more than a 00:15:58.85\00:16:04.56 slingshot and five smooth stones, David approached Goliath 00:16:04.59\00:16:05.93 decked out in a full suit of armor complete with a sword and 00:16:09.26\00:16:16.30 shield. Goliath was incredulous that the Israelites had 00:16:16.34\00:16:19.47 sent someone so 00:16:19.51\00:16:20.84 small and inexperienced to fight him. But David was 00:16:20.88\00:16:27.55 undeterred. When Goliath mocked him, David's response was calm 00:16:27.58\00:16:30.75 and sure. It's recorded herein I Samuel chapter 17 and verse 45 00:16:30.79\00:16:36.73 David's courage came from his faith in God. You know courage 00:16:49.17\00:16:55.44 isn't the absence of fear. Rather it's the willingness to 00:16:55.48\00:17:00.25 overcome it and do what is right. David was courageous 00:17:00.28\00:17:04.25 because he leaned on the arm of God. The rest of the story is 00:17:04.29\00:17:09.76 well earned. David defeated Goliath with a well-aimed swing 00:17:09.79\00:17:15.00 of his sling and a single smooth stone. Blinded, Goliath fell to 00:17:15.03\00:17:20.74 the ground and David dispatched him. His route was victorious 00:17:20.77\00:17:25.97 all because of the courage of a shepherd boy? The story of 00:17:26.01\00:17:32.58 David and Goliath is about facing giants and conquering 00:17:32.61\00:17:36.25 them in the face of almost insurmountable odds. But the 00:17:36.28\00:17:40.66 secret of David's victory was this. Fear did not consume him 00:17:40.69\00:17:46.29 because he leaned on the arm of God. At a time when fear 00:17:46.33\00:17:51.77 consumed every other man in the camp, David was immune to the 00:17:51.80\00:17:56.04 contagion because his faith in God and his power gave him an 00:17:56.07\00:18:01.64 edge that nothing else could. David understood better than 00:18:01.68\00:18:06.45 anyone what it meant to trust in the shadow of God's wings and 00:18:06.48\00:18:11.29 look to him and him alone for protection. It was this 00:18:11.32\00:18:16.73 understanding that prompted him to write some of the most well 00:18:16.76\00:18:21.23 loved psalms that we are familiar with today. In Psalm 91 00:18:21.26\00:18:26.97 David write this: 00:18:27.00\00:18:28.54 God promises to shelter us under the shadow of his wings. 00:18:51.79\00:18:56.56 He promises to be a refuge and a fortress for us. He promises to 00:18:56.60\00:19:01.14 deliver us even from the noisome pestilence much like the 00:19:01.17\00:19:07.24 one we are surrounded by now. If you're feeling overwhelmed 00:19:07.28\00:19:11.21 why not turn to Jesus and find refuge in him. Why not open his 00:19:11.25\00:19:17.82 word and find refuge in his promises. He is a safe and 00:19:17.85\00:19:22.32 secure refuge even in the midst of the worst storm or pestilence 00:19:22.36\00:19:26.63 David does goes on to write in Psalms 91: 00:19:26.66\00:19:30.97 When mother chicken is out in the yard checking for worms on a 00:19:54.66\00:19:59.59 warm, clear day, her eyes are always scanning the horizon 00:19:59.63\00:20:04.87 for hawks and other 00:20:04.90\00:20:06.23 dangers. Her little chicks are usually oblivious to the dangers 00:20:06.27\00:20:11.24 around them and are unable to defend themselves against 00:20:11.27\00:20:15.24 predators. When the mother hen sees the ominous shadow of a 00:20:15.28\00:20:20.22 predator flying briefly over her, she immediately calls 00:20:20.25\00:20:23.79 out an alarm 00:20:23.82\00:20:25.15 to the chicks frantically urging them to come to her. And as they 00:20:25.19\00:20:31.33 do she lifts her feathers and allows them to find shelter 00:20:31.36\00:20:35.86 under her wings. Now a hawk may be able to swoop down and easily 00:20:35.90\00:20:41.37 pick off a tiny baby chick but picking up a mother hen is much 00:20:41.40\00:20:46.34 more difficult. With the chicks safely under the shadow of their 00:20:46.37\00:20:51.31 mother's wings they are protected and the hawk has no 00:20:51.35\00:20:56.22 easy pickings. God is like that mother hen. More often than not 00:20:56.25\00:21:02.22 we are not only oblivious to the dangers around us, we are also 00:21:02.26\00:21:07.60 helpless in the face of the onslaught. But calls us to come 00:21:07.63\00:21:12.60 under the shelter and protection of his wings. In Daniel chapter 00:21:12.63\00:21:18.87 three when Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, three Hebrew slaves in 00:21:18.91\00:21:23.81 Babylon faced an impossible situation of fear and panic, it 00:21:23.85\00:21:28.78 was their faith in God that saw them through. On that day the 00:21:28.82\00:21:34.76 three Hebrew young men were faced with an unprecedented 00:21:34.79\00:21:38.43 decision. A moment where under threat of death they were forced 00:21:38.46\00:21:43.10 to compromise their principles and surrender the freedom of 00:21:43.13\00:21:48.14 their conscience. All of them, intelligent, thinking men, bowed 00:21:48.17\00:21:53.94 down to the massive statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up 00:21:53.98\00:21:59.05 in the vast plain of Dura. Here were men of diverse backgrounds 00:21:59.08\00:22:03.28 opinions, convictions and tastes Men who had made diverse choices 00:22:03.32\00:22:08.79 when faced with any given situation and yet it was a 00:22:08.82\00:22:14.50 little thing that kicked it all off. A single, simple command 00:22:14.53\00:22:19.40 from Nebuchadnezzar. But it was also a single dramatic event 00:22:19.43\00:22:24.77 that brought it to a boiling point because within that single 00:22:24.81\00:22:30.01 simple command was an ultimatum, an ultimatum that brought the 00:22:30.05\00:22:35.52 entire situation to a head and spread fear like a contagion 00:22:35.55\00:22:39.42 through the entire camp. Every person present was asked to bow 00:22:39.45\00:22:45.73 down on the pain of death. In that moment a single, simple 00:22:45.76\00:22:52.57 command to took on a whole new dynamic. In order to survive 00:22:52.60\00:22:58.74 every person present was forced to relinquish his personal 00:22:58.77\00:23:02.44 convictions whatever they may have been and instantly and 00:23:02.48\00:23:08.35 immediately obey which almost all of them did. But there were 00:23:08.38\00:23:13.12 three men who refused to bow down. Three men who stood tall 00:23:13.15\00:23:17.66 and stuck out like a sore thumb in that great kneeling landscape. When they 00:23:17.69\00:23:22.56 were brought before the king and forced to answer for their 00:23:22.60\00:23:25.37 actions they were calm. Quietly they told the king this: 00:23:25.40\00:23:31.01 They refused to bow down because they trusted implicitly in God. 00:23:54.90\00:24:01.57 And that is what gave them the courage to stand even in the 00:24:01.94\00:24:06.78 shadow of death. Their faith in God and his promises gave them 00:24:06.81\00:24:12.51 the peace they needed to face an uncertain future. But the story 00:24:12.55\00:24:17.75 doesn't end there. The men are thrown into the fire for their 00:24:17.79\00:24:22.59 insubordination. But there in the very heat of the blaze they 00:24:22.62\00:24:28.86 find that they're not alone. Jesus Christ walks with them in 00:24:28.90\00:24:33.60 the fire and protects them from being hurt.
