¤ ¤ 00:00:05.83\00:00:24.65 It was the 12th of October in the year 539 B.C. just under 550 00:00:24.69\00:00:30.13 years ago and it was during the reign of the Babylonian monarch 00:00:30.16\00:00:36.36 Belshazzar. And this king, well he knew how to party. He loved 00:00:36.40\00:00:42.17 to party and one night he organized a big party and what a 00:00:42.20\00:00:47.94 party it was. The king's lords, his wives, his concubines, over 00:00:47.98\00:00:53.31 a thousand of them. Not only drinking wine but drinking it 00:00:53.35\00:00:57.22 from the sacred vessels that had been part of the ancient Jewish 00:00:57.29\00:01:01.52 temple in Jerusalem 00:01:01.56\00:01:02.89 pillaged decades earlier by his grandfather 00:01:02.92\00:01:06.39 Nebuchadnezzar. Amid all the sacrilege and revelry and event 00:01:06.43\00:01:11.50 occurred that brought all festivities to an immediate halt 00:01:11.53\00:01:16.74 A mysterious hand appeared and in fiery letters wrote a 00:01:16.81\00:01:21.91 chilling message on the wall of the king's palace. If you ever 00:01:21.94\00:01:25.88 wondered where the phrase "the handwriting on the wall" 00:01:25.91\00:01:30.79 originated well here it is. No question this was strange 00:01:30.82\00:01:35.32 and it was shocking. Who wrote this message and what did it 00:01:35.36\00:01:40.50 mean. Join me as we investigate the amazing story of the 00:01:40.53\00:01:45.20 handwriting on the wall that rocked an ancient empire and 00:01:45.23\00:01:49.90 brought about the demise of its insolent king. 00:01:49.94\00:01:53.21 ¤ ¤ 00:01:53.24\00:02:16.16 King Nebuchadnezzar, the great warrior king of Babylon ruled 00:02:16.23\00:02:20.84 his kingdom from 605 B.C. He was powerful and he was invincible. 00:02:20.87\00:02:25.41 He had no peers. He was the uncontested ruler of the world. 00:02:25.44\00:02:31.11 Soon after he ascended the throne Nebuchadnezzar went on 00:02:31.15\00:02:36.05 the war path. He set out to invade the walled city of 00:02:36.08\00:02:40.92 Jerusalem. In fact, historical records and the Bible tell us 00:02:40.96\00:02:45.73 that this ancient king made three invading trips to 00:02:45.76\00:02:50.43 Jerusalem. Three times he led his mighty army 1500 kilometers 00:02:50.47\00:02:56.04 from Babylon across the fertile crescent to Jerusalem. And each 00:02:56.07\00:03:01.64 time he attacked he inflicted severe punishment and 00:03:01.68\00:03:05.25 tribulation on the city and its inhabitants. On this first trip 00:03:05.28\00:03:11.19 in 605 B.C. he took home with him many of the precious golden 00:03:11.22\00:03:17.09 vessels that he found in Solomon's magnificent temple. 00:03:17.13\00:03:21.23 And in addition, he and his troops took hostage a selected 00:03:21.26\00:03:25.30 number of young people including Daniel to be trained in the ways 00:03:25.33\00:03:31.17 of Babylon. In 597 B.C., just eight years later Nebuchadnezzar 00:03:31.21\00:03:36.31 returned to Jerusalem. This time he took most of the remaining 00:03:36.34\00:03:41.45 golden vessels and temple treasure and about 10,000 00:03:41.48\00:03:45.72 prisoners. By this time the Jewish king Jehoiachin 00:03:45.75\00:03:49.99 had abandoned any semblance of rebellion and 00:03:50.03\00:03:54.63 surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar. But 11 years later in 586 B.C. 00:03:54.66\00:04:00.44 Nebuchadnezzar invaded a third and final time. This time he 00:04:00.50\00:04:05.61 completely destroyed Solomon's temple, just leveled it to the 00:04:05.64\00:04:10.75 ground and took most of Jerusalem's remaining population 00:04:10.78\00:04:15.02 as captives back to Babylon with him. Now Nebuchadnezzar's 00:04:15.05\00:04:19.22 capital city of Babylon, located near the modern city of Baghdad 00:04:19.25\00:04:24.23 in Iraq is situated in a flat desert environment. Although 00:04:24.26\00:04:28.36 Nebuchadnezzar's wealth and power were legendary and he was 00:04:28.40\00:04:32.70 known as a mighty conqueror like most husbands he wanted to 00:04:32.73\00:04:37.01 please his wife, Amytis. She came from the mountainous 00:04:37.04\00:04:41.84 region to the north. 00:04:41.88\00:04:43.21 Babylon was flat and dry, desert and she yearned 00:04:43.24\00:04:48.52 for the green gardens of her mountain home. So Nebuchadnezzar 00:04:48.55\00:04:53.52 arranged to build the beautiful hanging gardens of Babylon for 00:04:53.56\00:04:58.49 her. These gardens are considered to be one of the 00:04:58.53\00:05:02.56 seven wonders of the ancient world. King Nebuchadnezzar's 00:05:02.60\00:05:06.80 power was legendary. He had finally conquered Egypt and 00:05:06.84\00:05:11.67 extended his empire and now his capital city, Babylon, was 00:05:11.71\00:05:15.91 the most magnificent and the dominant city of the world. 00:05:15.94\00:05:20.15 Its population reached about two million. It rose out of the 00:05:20.22\00:05:25.02 desert plain with a spectacular skyline. It boasted temples, 00:05:25.05\00:05:30.39 terraces and palaces. In fact Nebuchadnezzar built three 00:05:30.43\00:05:35.66 luxurious palace complexes in the city and ensured there were 00:05:35.73\00:05:41.30 massive double and triple walls for protection. We're told these 00:05:41.34\00:05:46.88 walls were over 100 meters high and 30 meters wide. Four 00:05:46.91\00:05:51.31 chariots abreast could ride on them. Nebuchadnezzar was proud 00:05:51.35\00:05:56.38 of the beauty of his palaces. In fact he was so proud of all he 00:05:56.42\00:06:00.86 had achieved and the great city that he built that he ordered 00:06:00.89\00:06:05.39 his initials to be printed on the building bricks. At this 00:06:05.46\00:06:10.37 time Babylon was an advanced and highly developed innovative 00:06:10.43\00:06:15.80 and sophisticated society. Way back in those days they knew all 00:06:15.84\00:06:21.18 about solving quadratic equations, reciprocals, squares 00:06:21.21\00:06:25.31 and square roots, cubes and cube roots. They were the world 00:06:25.35\00:06:29.45 leaders in numbers, facts and figures. In fact, they 00:06:29.48\00:06:35.39 were so advanced 00:06:35.42\00:06:36.76 that some of their systems have come down to us today. They were 00:06:36.79\00:06:40.56 the ones that came up with 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes 00:06:40.60\00:06:44.63 in an hour and 360 degrees in a circle. The Babylonian 00:06:44.67\00:06:50.47 astronomers were also the world leaders in the study of the 00:06:50.51\00:06:54.88 heavenly bodies, the planets and stars. They carefully recorded 00:06:54.91\00:06:59.21 eclipses and knew how to interpret and predict them. 00:06:59.25\00:07:03.89 And in the area of commerce and economics they introduced bills, 00:07:03.92\00:07:08.62 promissory notes, receipts, letters of credit, compound 00:07:08.66\00:07:13.09 interest and even a system of checks. But Babylon was also a 00:07:13.13\00:07:17.90 leader in some other kinds of knowledge and practices, the 00:07:17.93\00:07:23.10 dark arts, the occult magic, pagan mythology, astrology, 00:07:23.14\00:07:28.28 divination and 00:07:28.31\00:07:29.64 sorcery had permeated their society. The king even had an 00:07:29.68\00:07:35.62 elite group of wise men with its magicians and astrologers who 00:07:35.65\00:07:39.99 advised him. Nebuchadnezzar had desperately sought advice from 00:07:40.62\00:07:45.19 this group of wise men and seers. When he'd been able to 00:07:45.23\00:07:49.76 remember his dream about a giant metal statue made of gold, 00:07:49.80\00:07:54.40 silver, brass and iron. When the wise men couldn't tell the king 00:07:54.44\00:07:58.97 his dream much less interpret it, he angrily ordered them all 00:07:59.01\00:08:04.08 to be executed. This execution order included the young Jewish 00:08:04.15\00:08:09.15 noblemen Daniel and his friends. Daniel requests an audience with 00:08:09.18\00:08:14.22 the king and tells him there is a God in heaven who can show him 00:08:14.26\00:08:19.23 and interpret the dream. Then under God's guidance he tells 00:08:19.26\00:08:25.00 tells king his dream and provides the interpretation 00:08:25.03\00:08:27.87 that outlines the 00:08:27.90\00:08:29.74 future of the world right through to the climax of history 00:08:29.80\00:08:33.84 and the introduction of God's kingdom that will last forever. 00:08:33.88\00:08:37.91 Now about 35 years later King Nebuchadnezzar has another 00:08:37.95\00:08:42.98 dream. This time it's about a tree and he wants to know what 00:08:43.02\00:08:48.49 it means. So again, he calls in his wise men, the wizards, the 00:08:48.52\00:08:53.96 astrologers and magicians and asks them to interpret his 00:08:54.00\00:08:58.57 dream. Well the same situation happens again. The wise men 00:08:58.63\00:09:04.31 can't explain the dream to the king. They fail again and then 00:09:04.34\00:09:10.01 Nebuchadnezzar remembers the honest and reliable Hebrew 00:09:10.05\00:09:14.88 Daniel. So he summons Daniel and this is what Daniel says: 00:09:14.92\00:09:19.75 It's unbelievable but that's exactly what happened. This 00:09:33.13\00:09:38.07 powerful monarch of the world's leading empire goes mad just as 00:09:38.11\00:09:43.11 the dream had predicted. For seven years the king lived a 00:09:43.14\00:09:47.38 pathetic, deranged life eating grass in a field like an animal 00:09:47.42\00:09:51.79 until he finally responded to the message from God. 00:09:51.82\00:09:55.92 Nebuchadnezzar recognizes, exalts and praises God and 00:10:14.04\00:10:18.71 resumes his monarchy until his death in 562 B.C. at the grand 00:10:18.75\00:10:24.45 old age of 104. After Nebuchadnezzar's death 00:10:24.49\00:10:29.12 his son Amel-Marduke but ironically known by the name 00:10:29.16\00:10:35.40 Evil Marodak ruled the kingdom for two terrible years until he 00:10:35.43\00:10:39.87 is assassinated by his own brother-in-law. Then he dies 00:10:39.90\00:10:44.81 after just four years on the throne leaving a young son. Some 00:10:44.84\00:10:49.08 of the court conspirators got together and killed the young 00:10:49.11\00:10:54.32 boy king and installed their own choice on the throne. His name 00:10:54.35\00:11:00.19 was Nabonidus, a royal prince. But sadly Nabonidus is a very 00:11:00.22\00:11:05.49 ineffectual ruler. In a short time, only 23 years since the 00:11:05.53\00:11:10.97 great king Nebuchadnezzar has died, the golden era for Babylon 00:11:11.00\00:11:16.64 has faded. And then after about six years as king Nabonidus 00:11:16.71\00:11:20.74 decides to transfer his headquarters out of the city of 00:11:20.78\00:11:24.71 Babylon to the distant oasis Tema in Arabia. Nabonidus then 00:11:24.78\00:11:31.39 installs his son Belshazzar on the throne in Babylon as a 00:11:31.42\00:11:37.96 coregent or second king. History reveals that he did not worship 00:11:37.99\00:11:42.60 Babylonian patron God Marduk but was an avid worshiper of the 00:11:42.63\00:11:47.20 moon god. Now, this is unbelievable. The name of the 00:11:47.24\00:11:51.51 deity the moon God was Sin. Now Nabonidus, even though he was 00:11:51.57\00:11:56.78 the first king was living 1000 kilometers away from Babylon 00:11:56.85\00:12:02.48 and for the last 10 years had not even returned once to 00:12:02.52\00:12:08.09 celebrate the popular New Years festival. In addition, Nabonidus 00:12:08.12\00:12:13.29 became very unpopular when he forced some of the high class 00:12:13.33\00:12:17.83 citizens of Babylon to work in labor gangs for the state. Many 00:12:17.87\00:12:22.37 of the Babylonians became extremely dissatisfied and even 00:12:22.40\00:12:26.84 joined the enemy, the growing Medo-Persian army in her 00:12:26.88\00:12:31.41 rebellion against Babylon. This caused Nabonidus to lose 00:12:31.45\00:12:35.92 military battles against the Persian general Cyrus at Opis 00:12:35.95\00:12:40.82 about 182 meters away from Babylon and then at Sippar 80 00:12:40.86\00:12:46.93 kilometers north of the city. Historic accounts are very 00:12:46.96\00:12:51.20 detailed about these battles and he recorded that the last 00:12:51.23\00:12:56.57 battle happened on the 10th of October 539 B.C. Just two days 00:12:56.60\00:13:01.88 later on the 12th of October 539 B.C. the Persian troops 00:13:01.91\00:13:08.25 are camped outside the city walls and besiege Babylon itself 00:13:08.28\00:13:13.25 Now Belshazzar, son of Nabonidus and the second king of Babylon, 00:13:13.29\00:13:18.19 decided that this was a perfect time to host a huge party. 00:13:18.23\00:13:24.30 The Bible says 1000 people are invited to imbibe and celebrate 00:13:24.33\00:13:29.70 with him. Let's read what the Bible says in Daniel chapter 5 00:13:29.74\00:13:35.04 and verse 1. 00:13:35.08\00:13:37.21 Amazingly the Babylonians did not fear the enemy troops 00:13:47.62\00:13:51.43 outside their walls. They knew that their city was well 00:13:51.46\00:13:55.20 fortified. There were those two sets of double walls and there 00:13:55.23\00:13:59.80 were enough provisions to last for months. Even water was in 00:13:59.83\00:14:04.11 good supply. The great Euphrates River flowed through heavily 00:14:04.17\00:14:08.41 guarded gates right into the city. But on this night the 00:14:08.44\00:14:12.48 gates weren't guarded. Let's read the record of this night. 00:14:12.51\00:14:16.52 It's found in Daniel chapter 5 verses 2 and 3: 00:14:16.55\00:14:19.95 The Bible account opens on Belshazzar who remembers his 00:14:39.74\00:14:44.41 heritage. The English Bible calls Belshazzar the son of 00:14:44.45\00:14:48.65 Nebuchadnezzar but as we have described in this messy royal 00:14:48.68\00:14:53.15 line, Belshazzar was not his son but rather a successor, a 00:14:53.19\00:14:57.49 grandson which is how the original Aramaic words can be 00:14:57.53\00:15:02.13 translated. It is, in fact, pointed out seven times in the 00:15:02.16\00:15:06.67 chapter. In defiance, Belshazzar ordered his servants to bring to 00:15:06.70\00:15:12.94 him the sacred vessels that Nebuchadnezzar had taken from 00:15:12.97\00:15:16.54 the temple in Jerusalem. He wants to commemorate the victory 00:15:16.61\00:15:20.92 of Babylon over Jerusalem, the triumph of the god of Babylon 00:15:20.95\00:15:25.39 over the God of Israel. Let's read what's recorded in Daniel 00:15:25.42\00:15:29.86 chapter 5 and verse 4: 00:15:29.89\00:15:34.76 Notice that these are the same metals as those on the great 00:15:39.57\00:15:44.87 statue in Nebuchadnezzar's dream and they are listed in the 00:15:44.91\00:15:50.15 same order. Through this gesture this intoxicated monarch 00:15:50.91\00:15:55.08 deliberately and publically showing contempt and 00:15:55.12\00:15:59.75 scorn for the 00:15:59.79\00:16:01.12 predictions that Babylon would come to an end one day. Suddenly 00:16:01.16\00:16:06.59 the party crowd goes silent. They are stunned as they watch a 00:16:06.63\00:16:11.33 hand appear. It comes out of nowhere and it is writing in 00:16:11.37\00:16:16.37 fiery letters on the wall. The people watch in awe as the 00:16:16.40\00:16:20.54 the handwriting slowly makes words, but nobody can read 00:16:20.58\00:16:25.31 the message and so nobody knows what it means. However, 00:16:25.35\00:16:29.98 even in their drunken state they know that these words of fire 00:16:30.02\00:16:35.22 mean trouble. A feeling of fear and trepidation sweeps over the 00:16:35.26\00:16:40.40 party crowd. Terrified the defiant king goes pale and his 00:16:40.43\00:16:45.63 his knees knock together. Immediately Belshazzar cries out 00:16:45.67\00:16:50.11 for the Babylonian wise men, astrologers and magicians of 00:16:50.14\00:16:54.54 the kingdom and in his desperation makes this 00:16:54.58\00:16:58.88 extravagant promise: 00:16:58.91\00:17:00.45 Remember Belshazzar is only the second ruler of the kingdom 00:17:13.19\00:17:18.87 after his father. So in desperation he offers the 00:17:18.90\00:17:24.44 highest position he can, third ruler, to anyone who can read 00:17:24.47\00:17:29.54 and interpret the handwriting. But no one can. Now Belshazzar 00:17:29.58\00:17:34.58 is greatly troubled as he stares at the fiery words. His 00:17:34.62\00:17:39.12 suppressed memories haunt and disturb him. And then the Queen 00:17:39.15\00:17:44.03 Mother enters the banquet. She encourages Belshazzar to 00:17:44.06\00:17:48.20 remember that his father, grandfather, Nebuchadnezzar 00:17:48.23\00:17:52.80 believed in God and to consult the old prophet Daniel: 00:17:52.83\00:17:57.41 Daniel, an old man now, is still standing for his faith in God. 00:18:41.95\00:18:47.06 He enters the courtyard and walks up to the king. Belshazzar 00:18:47.09\00:18:52.63 is shaking and begs Daniel to read the fiery words. He offers 00:18:52.69\00:18:57.07 the aged prophet the riches and gifts that the third person in 00:18:57.10\00:19:01.74 the kingdom would be entitled to. What was Daniel's response 00:19:01.77\00:19:06.91 to the king? Well Daniel's usual tact and respect is replaced by 00:19:06.94\00:19:12.05 his stern answer: 00:19:12.08\00:19:14.62 And then Daniel, in front of those thousand people, told the 00:19:29.26\00:19:34.07 king how his predecessor, Nebuchadnezzar, had to learn the 00:19:34.14\00:19:38.47 hard way that the God of heaven ruled over everything and 00:19:38.51\00:19:43.61 everyone including kings. He reminded Belshazzar that 00:19:43.65\00:19:48.68 Nebuchadnezzar had gone mad for seven years before he learned 00:19:48.75\00:19:53.29 that lesson: 00:19:53.32\00:19:55.06 And then Daniel reads and interprets the handwriting 00:20:34.43\00:20:38.93 on the wall: 00:20:38.97\00:20:40.30 That very night the 12th of October 539 B.C. while 00:21:02.12\00:21:07.56 Belshazzar and his friends partied, the enemy attacked. The 00:21:07.60\00:21:12.23 ancient historian Herodotus and Xenophon record this: The 00:21:12.27\00:21:16.84 river was low after the hot summer and the invaders 00:21:16.87\00:21:20.61 cleverly lowered it further by diverting some of the water. 00:21:20.68\00:21:25.51 The Persian soldiers waded into the now knee-deep stream. When 00:21:25.55\00:21:30.25 they came to the mighty river gates they found them unguarded 00:21:30.29\00:21:34.82 and open just as the prophecy in Isaiah predicted 200 years 00:21:34.86\00:21:39.66 before. Cyrus took the city of Babylon with scarcely a fight 00:21:39.69\00:21:45.50 and that very night King Belshazzar lost his life and his 00:21:45.53\00:21:50.74 kingdom. No wonder when Daniel first stepped before he 00:21:50.77\00:21:54.94 drunken king, he didn't bother with the usual niceties and 00:21:55.01\00:21:59.48 greeting for the king, O King live forever. As Daniel read the 00:21:59.51\00:22:04.19 writing on the wall he knew that the king as doomed, that the 00:22:04.22\00:22:08.69 king was going to die in just a short time, and that's exactly 00:22:08.72\00:22:13.19 what happened. Here's the Bible account: 00:22:13.23\00:22:16.77 The kingdom of Babylon came to an end that very night. 00:22:29.24\00:22:34.38 Belshazzar was the last of the Babylonian monarchs. A new king, 00:22:34.45\00:22:40.86 Darius the Mede ascends the throne. Darius the Mede ruled 00:22:40.89\00:22:45.59 the city for just over a year until his death and then Cyrus 00:22:45.66\00:22:49.93 the Great became the king of the Medes and Persians just as 00:22:49.96\00:22:54.24 Bible prophecy had predicted. The head of gold truly had been 00:22:54.80\00:23:02.18 toppled. Just as had been predicted in King 00:23:02.21\00:23:04.55 Nebuchadnezzar's dream of the great metal image so many years 00:23:04.58\00:23:09.28 before. When Daniel had told Nebuchadnezzar that God was 00:23:09.32\00:23:13.59 giving him a glimpse into the future. In fact, God was showing 00:23:13.62\00:23:18.89 him the broad sweep of history right down to the climax of 00:23:18.93\00:23:24.13 earth's history. The image represented the future 00:23:24.17\00:23:28.00 succession of empires from Babylon to Medo-Persia to Greece 00:23:28.07\00:23:33.84 to Rome and then to the time of modern Europe. That stone 00:23:33.88\00:23:38.31 represented the kingdom of God which will never be destroyed. 00:23:38.35\00:23:42.78 This is one of the most remarkable prophecies in the 00:23:42.82\00:23:46.96 Bible. It tells us thousands of years of world history and it 00:23:46.99\00:23:51.23 pictures the succession of world empires with amazing accuracy. 00:23:51.26\00:23:55.43 Amazingly even though Daniel the prophet was an old man he 00:23:55.46\00:24:01.44 became a trusted advisor to first Darius and then Cyrus the 00:24:01.47\00:24:06.44 Medo-Persian king. And he did it by proclaiming his faith, by 00:24:06.47\00:24:11.31 standing true to his values. He did it by showing people around 00:24:11.35\00:24:16.18 him that God has answers. There's a lesson here for us in 00:24:16.22\00:24:22.09 the writing on the wall. In a sense the handwriting on the 00:24:22.12\00:24:27.90 wall is still there even though those flaming letters have faded 00:24:27.96\00:24:33.34 And today they're still saying turn to God. Turn to God while 00:24:33.40\00:24:38.44 there is still time. There is no better time to make this choice. 00:24:38.47\00:24:43.48 There is no point in waiting until tomorrow. The day for 00:24:43.51\00:24:48.08 choosing God is right now. The writing on the wall is a 00:24:48.12\00:24:51.95 reminder that we need to live our lives with the knowledge 00:24:51.99\00:24:55.76 that God is watching what we do. Now for some that will produce 00:24:55.79\00:25:01.13 sudden fear. For others it will provide comfort. For most it may 00:25:01.16\00:25:06.43 not change anything. The question is if God was to write 00:25:06.47\00:25:11.57 something on your wall what would it be. Would it be well 00:25:11.61\00:25:16.58 done you good and faithful servant? Would it be depart from 00:25:16.64\00:25:21.78 me. I never knew you. Maybe it would be I've given you so much 00:25:21.85\00:25:27.46 I wish you would spend more time with me and do more for me. One 00:25:27.49\00:25:32.29 day the writing will be on the wall and we will give an account 00:25:32.33\00:25:38.07 of the decisions we made and the life we lived. Sometimes we can 00:25:38.10\00:25:42.97 feel overwhelmed when struggling with the challenges of life in a 00:25:43.00\00:25:47.88 hostile and secular world. But God has the answers to the 00:25:47.91\00:25:53.42 deepest problems of the human heart. Why not choose to believe 00:25:53.45\00:25:56.58 and trust in God just like Daniel did.
