¤ ¤ 00:00:01.36\00:00:04.83 Lions. They are considered ferocious predators and known as 00:00:28.89\00:00:32.89 the king of the jungle. A very popular song goes like this: 00:00:33.70\00:00:37.70 In the jungle, the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight. 00:00:38.17\00:00:44.14 But in actual fact lions don't live in the jungle at all. They 00:00:44.17\00:00:49.24 live on grass lands in Savannah. These majestic animals are part 00:00:49.28\00:00:55.08 of the big cat family. They are the second largest of the big 00:00:55.12\00:00:58.82 cat family and live in groups called prides. The female lions 00:00:58.85\00:01:03.63 hunt while the males patrol the territory and protect the pride. 00:01:03.66\00:01:08.16 Now lions can run up to speeds of 80 km/hr when chasing their 00:01:08.56\00:01:14.20 prey. They chase zebra, antelope wildebeests and other animals 00:01:14.24\00:01:19.14 that cross their paths when they are on the hunt. Lions need to 00:01:19.47\00:01:23.85 eat about eight kilograms of food every day which means they 00:01:23.88\00:01:27.62 spend a lot of their waking time thinking about food. 00:01:27.65\00:01:31.39 The splendid male lion can weigh up to about 200 kilos and is 00:01:31.42\00:01:37.79 nearly three meters in length and they are the only big cats 00:01:37.83\00:01:41.16 with a mane. The female lion is smaller and weighs about 130 00:01:41.20\00:01:46.70 kilos. One of the greatest sounds of the African night is 00:01:46.74\00:01:52.31 the lion's roar. Now a roar is a sign of dominance and a signal 00:01:52.34\00:01:57.61 of the lion's power and strength so the louder the roar the 00:01:57.65\00:02:02.15 better. In fact, a lion's roar can be heard up to eight 00:02:02.18\00:02:06.99 kilometers away. Lions use their impressive roar to warn rivals 00:02:07.02\00:02:12.46 and to instill fear into all who hear it. Lions used to run all 00:02:12.49\00:02:20.74 over the middle east and one thing is for sure; you wouldn't 00:02:20.77\00:02:24.71 want to get too close to a hungry lion. But that was the 00:02:24.74\00:02:29.01 fate of an elderly man who lived in Babylon 2600 years ago. In 00:02:29.04\00:02:36.28 fact he found himself in a den of hungry lions and survived. 00:02:36.32\00:02:42.52 How did he do it? How did he survive the lions' den? What's 00:02:42.56\00:02:48.66 the secret of his bravery and courage? Well, today we're going 00:02:48.70\00:02:53.23 to take a close look at this old lion tamer, Daniel and discover 00:02:53.27\00:02:57.77 his secret of inner strength that will provide us with the 00:02:57.81\00:03:01.88 key to surviving the challenges of modern life and more 00:03:01.91\00:03:05.75 importantly, the end time. His amazing story will inspire and 00:03:05.78\00:03:11.55 encourage you. 00:03:11.59\00:03:12.92 ¤ ¤ 00:03:12.95\00:03:36.24 It's one thing to hear the roar of danger off in the distance or 00:03:36.28\00:03:39.88 far in the future. It's one thing to make promises to God 00:03:39.91\00:03:44.19 in a safe and calm here and now, but what if that roar 00:03:44.22\00:03:48.92 suddenly 00:03:48.96\00:03:50.29 erupted in your face right now? What if your faith was tested by 00:03:50.33\00:03:54.80 the fiery gaze of a lion? Would you be able to stay committed? 00:03:54.83\00:03:59.07 Well I'd like to tell you about a man who stood very much alone 00:03:59.10\00:04:03.17 in a time of widespread corruption, a man who was tested 00:04:03.20\00:04:07.48 by the roar of danger up close. His career took him to the 00:04:07.51\00:04:12.75 courts of the Medo-Persian empire during the reign of King 00:04:12.78\00:04:16.99 Darius. The man, Daniel, was considered by many to be a 00:04:17.02\00:04:22.36 prophet. 00:04:22.39\00:04:23.96 ¤ ¤ 00:04:23.99\00:04:32.67 Our story begins with the destruction of the sacred city 00:04:32.70\00:04:35.77 of Jerusalem during a series of fierce battles that started in 00:04:35.80\00:04:40.28 605 B.C., just over 2600 years ago. The greatest empire of the 00:04:40.31\00:04:47.48 ancient world, Babylon, attacked and plundered the nation of 00:04:47.52\00:04:51.69 Judah, luting the temple and carrying of many of the sacred 00:04:51.72\00:04:56.09 golden vessels. Daniel was captured and with the cream of 00:04:56.12\00:05:01.73 the city's youth he was carried off to Babylon as a war hostage. 00:05:01.76\00:05:05.17 By a remarkable turn of events he eventually rose to a position 00:05:05.20\00:05:13.51 of trust under King Nebuchadnezzar. 00:05:13.54\00:05:15.98 His unique character is demonstrated by this remarkable 00:05:16.01\00:05:21.38 fact. Daniel survived the fall of one empire and its 00:05:21.42\00:05:25.02 replacement by another. He stood by the Babylonian king and the 00:05:25.05\00:05:29.89 Persian monarch who conquered him. Not many people are valued 00:05:29.92\00:05:33.70 enough to make that kind of transition. In the kingdom of 00:05:33.73\00:05:45.41 Medo-Persia Daniel became what we would call the first vice 00:05:45.44\00:05:49.74 president. The book of Daniel records this remarkable story. 00:05:49.78\00:05:55.08 Notice what it says in chapter six verses one to three: 00:05:55.12\00:05:59.99 Notice that Darius made his 120 bureaucrats accountable to the 00:06:31.09\00:06:37.13 three administrators so that he might not suffer loss. Bribery, 00:06:37.16\00:06:42.53 extortion and fraud were as much a problem in the ancient world 00:06:42.56\00:06:46.50 as they are now. Many of the officials who had managed to 00:06:46.53\00:06:50.64 occupy positions of influence were interested only in 00:06:50.67\00:06:55.34 furthering their own careers. They tended to pocket a good 00:06:55.38\00:06:59.41 portion of whatever tax money passed through their hands and 00:06:59.45\00:07:04.02 they often enriched themselves at the expense of the King by 00:07:04.05\00:07:07.56 keeping false financial records. Daniel's responsibility was to 00:07:07.59\00:07:12.93 see that the books were kept honestly. He was supposed to 00:07:12.96\00:07:16.53 deal with corruption in the court and apparently he did a 00:07:16.56\00:07:20.20 very good job because he distinguished himself by his 00:07:20.24\00:07:23.67 integrity. So Darius wanted to entrust the whole kingdom into 00:07:23.71\00:07:29.14 Daniel's hands. Daniel was on his way to becoming the second 00:07:29.18\00:07:33.98 most powerful man in the Medo-Persian empire. But not 00:07:34.02\00:07:38.99 everybody was pleased with this. Some very much wanted to keep 00:07:39.02\00:07:42.32 the status quo. They wanted to keep enriching themselves with 00:07:42.36\00:07:46.26 government funds and this strange Hebrew who didn't fit 00:07:46.29\00:07:50.63 in, the man always intent on straightening things out, he was 00:07:50.67\00:07:55.44 now going to be elevated to a position over them. They just 00:07:55.47\00:08:00.28 couldn't let that happen. They couldn't handle it. So they 00:08:00.31\00:08:03.81 huddled together in a quiet palace passageway and they 00:08:03.85\00:08:07.12 planned a strategy. How could they move Daniel out of the 00:08:07.15\00:08:11.45 picture. Darius trusted him implicitly so they thought why 00:08:11.49\00:08:17.43 not find grounds for charges against him in his handling of 00:08:17.46\00:08:21.20 the government affairs. These officials set about to dig for 00:08:21.23\00:08:26.03 dirt and they dug long and hard. But they came up empty. Not even 00:08:26.07\00:08:32.24 a hint of corruption. Not even a trace of negligence. Daniel was 00:08:32.27\00:08:37.25 not the kind of man who wears his religion like a cloak that 00:08:37.28\00:08:41.32 he can take off when circumstances seem to require 00:08:41.35\00:08:43.92 it. Daniel's faith went to the _but that was it. Somebody 00:08:43.95\00:08:51.89 finally realized how to get him, his faith. The Bible tells us 00:08:51.93\00:08:55.76 what these men concluded. Notice Daniel chapter 6 and verse 5: 00:08:55.80\00:09:00.97 Daniel could not be bought off. He could not be blackmailed. 00:09:10.48\00:09:17.12 There was only one way to get rid of him and that was to enact 00:09:17.15\00:09:20.32 a law that would put Daniel in the position of disobeying his 00:09:20.36\00:09:24.79 God. Now the book of Daniel not only gives us prophecies 00:09:24.83\00:09:29.76 regarding the future, the end time. It also shows us how to 00:09:29.80\00:09:34.90 survive the final crisis. You know, it's interesting to note 00:09:34.94\00:09:40.21 that Daniel's enemies decided to attack him through the law of 00:09:40.24\00:09:45.21 his God. Specifically in this case they decided to test him 00:09:45.25\00:09:50.49 regarding the commandment to worship God and God alone. So 00:09:50.52\00:09:56.26 one day the conspirators arrived at the palace and presented King 00:09:56.29\00:10:01.60 Darius with a very flattering proposal. We read about it again 00:10:01.63\00:10:06.20 in Daniel the 6th chapter, this time in verses 6 and 7. 00:10:06.23\00:10:11.24 These men suggested a sort of King Darius month, a 30-day 00:10:35.00\00:10:41.10 period in which 00:10:41.14\00:10:42.47 everyone would honor the monarch exclusively. Well 00:10:42.50\00:10:46.37 naturally Darius took a liking to the idea. Such spontaneous 00:10:46.41\00:10:51.68 devotion from his chief administrators. That was nice 00:10:51.71\00:10:55.92 to hear, after all his problems with their dishonesty. So he 00:10:55.95\00:11:01.02 signed the decree into law, an irrevocable, unchangeable decree 00:11:01.06\00:11:05.39 that carried the death penalty. The trap was set! Sooner or 00:11:05.43\00:11:11.63 later Daniel was bound to fall into it. They would catch him 00:11:11.67\00:11:16.10 worshiping his own God during the next 30 days and bring the 00:11:16.14\00:11:20.81 king's decree down on his own head. Now think about that for a 00:11:20.84\00:11:30.39 moment. What if the simple act of praying was made a criminal 00:11:30.42\00:11:34.26 offense. It might seem a simple easy act to worship the God of 00:11:34.29\00:11:39.66 heaven and earth in the privacy of your own home. But what if it 00:11:39.69\00:11:45.37 were made a criminal offense? What if to worship the true God 00:11:45.40\00:11:48.90 made staring into the face of a hungry lion. That sort of 00:11:48.94\00:11:53.54 changes the picture doesn't it? What faith, what courage, what 00:11:53.58\00:11:59.58 commitment to God. This man's response to the threat is 00:11:59.61\00:12:04.65 recorded in Daniel chapter 6 and verse 10: 00:12:04.69\00:12:08.69 What a remarkable act of devotion. Daniel could have 00:12:27.41\00:12:32.18 tried to hide his religion. He could have tried to go along 00:12:32.21\00:12:35.68 with the decree. Surely God would understand if he took a 00:12:35.72\00:12:39.65 break from his worship routine. After all, he'd been so faithful 00:12:39.69\00:12:44.99 before. But now he prayed toward Jerusalem by the window just as 00:12:45.03\00:12:50.57 he had done before. There's a beautiful testament of courage 00:12:50.60\00:12:54.97 in that simple act. Decree or no decree, Daniel was going to give 00:12:55.00\00:13:00.71 his ultimate allegiance to the God of heaven and earth. 00:13:00.74\00:13:05.85 ¤ ¤ 00:13:05.88\00:13:18.63 There's something else that impresses me about Daniel's 00:13:18.66\00:13:21.20 praying. He wasn't in a panic begging God to give him a way 00:13:21.23\00:13:25.40 out of the dilemma. He wasn't a desperate man. It wasn't a 00:13:25.43\00:13:29.87 desperate prayer. It was a prayer of thanksgiving. That's 00:13:29.90\00:13:34.74 what it says. Daniel was giving thanks to his God as was his 00:13:34.78\00:13:39.31 custom. This tells me something about this man's religion. It 00:13:39.35\00:13:44.25 shows me why it stood the test of time during a crisis. Daniel 00:13:44.29\00:13:49.26 treasured his relationship with his Lord. To him that was most 00:13:49.29\00:13:54.96 important, the most important thing in his life. He was 00:13:55.00\00:13:58.83 thankful for the privilege of communicating with the Almighty. 00:13:58.87\00:14:02.74 That was worth any price. A religion of convenience isn't 00:14:02.77\00:14:08.68 going to make it when we find ourselves in a real pressure 00:14:08.71\00:14:12.65 situation. Nor is it going to make it when things really get 00:14:12.68\00:14:15.98 tough now or in the future. Religion as a once-a-week 00:14:16.02\00:14:20.42 supplement to our lives just isn't going to make it. Only a 00:14:20.46\00:14:24.99 relationship with God, a God that we value above all else is 00:14:25.03\00:14:30.07 going to stand. Like Daniel the great reformer John Huss based 00:14:30.10\00:14:36.81 his life on obedience to his Lord. When Huss was condemned 00:14:36.84\00:14:40.98 to be burnt alive at the stake he had to undergo what was 00:14:41.01\00:14:45.08 called the ceremony of degradation. Church dignitaries 00:14:45.11\00:14:49.65 at the scene publicly stripped his identity as a priest and as 00:14:49.68\00:14:54.82 a Christian. First the cup of communion was taken from his 00:14:54.86\00:14:59.46 hands and the dignitaries denounced Huss. He responded by 00:14:59.49\00:15:05.13 saying, I hope to drink from the cup in the kingdom of God. Next 00:15:05.17\00:15:09.94 the officials removed his garments one by one pronouncing 00:15:09.97\00:15:13.94 in each instance the appropriate curse. Huss replied that he was 00:15:13.98\00:15:19.38 quite willing to suffer shame for the name of the Lord. 00:15:19.41\00:15:24.05 Finally a tall paper crown was placed on his head. It pictured 00:15:24.09\00:15:29.66 three devils fighting for the position of his soul and read 00:15:29.69\00:15:34.10 this is an arch heretic. The bishops entoned a final curse: 00:15:34.13\00:15:39.63 We commit your soul to the Devil John Huss calmly replied and I 00:15:39.67\00:15:48.04 commit it to the most merciful Lord Jesus Christ. What this 00:15:48.08\00:15:53.35 courageous man expressed was this: You can take everything 00:15:53.38\00:15:57.59 away from me, you can degrade me publicly, but you can't take 00:15:57.62\00:16:01.89 away the most precious thing in my life, my relationship with 00:16:01.92\00:16:07.03 the Lord Jesus Christ. And that's the kind of testimony 00:16:07.06\00:16:10.67 that Daniel made even under the threat of certain death in the 00:16:10.70\00:16:14.80 lion's den. He still treasured communicating with his Lord. He 00:16:14.84\00:16:20.11 would not betray that relationship. Well needless to 00:16:20.14\00:16:26.75 say, his enemies spotted him praying and rushed into court 00:16:26.78\00:16:31.05 with the news that someone was not celebrating King Darius 00:16:31.09\00:16:35.62 month properly. When he learned who it was the King was dismayed 00:16:35.66\00:16:41.00 He realized he'd been tricked into signing the death warrant 00:16:41.03\00:16:45.13 of the one man 00:16:45.17\00:16:46.63 in his empire who he trusted completely. But his hands were 00:16:46.67\00:16:51.77 tied. The law could not be revoked. Let's read what 00:16:51.81\00:16:56.31 happened in Daniel chapter 6 verses 16 and 17. 00:16:56.34\00:17:00.52 Now let me ask you, how would you feel if you were thrown into 00:17:16.03\00:17:22.37 the lion's den and told I hope your God may rescue you somehow? 00:17:22.40\00:17:27.51 That might not be much comfort to any of us. Well the grate was 00:17:27.54\00:17:32.78 closed and the stone was lowered into place overhead sealing 00:17:32.81\00:17:36.95 Daniel in with those hungry beasts and appeared to seal his 00:17:36.99\00:17:41.46 fate. Not many would expect to survive the night in a den of 00:17:41.49\00:17:48.33 lions and there'd be absolutely no chance of spending a restful 00:17:48.36\00:17:52.63 night in there. But here's the fascinating thing. King Darius 00:17:52.67\00:17:57.81 was the one who tossed and turned all night in his palace. 00:17:57.84\00:18:01.81 He lost his appetite and couldn't eat a bite. 00:18:01.84\00:18:04.38 He dismissed his attendant. Darius was filled with guilt and 00:18:04.41\00:18:09.25 anguish over what had happened. He was genuinely concerned for 00:18:09.28\00:18:14.82 Daniel and had a great affection and respect for him. He couldn't 00:18:14.86\00:18:19.06 sleep at all that night. Now Darius already knew of Daniel's 00:18:19.09\00:18:25.07 God and he had some inkling that he could intervene on Daniel's 00:18:25.10\00:18:29.54 behalf. So at the crack of dawn he called his attendants and 00:18:29.57\00:18:34.91 they rushed to the lion's den. King Darius was stressed and 00:18:34.94\00:18:41.12 impatient. He impatiently told the guards to hurry up and open 00:18:41.15\00:18:44.69 the entrance to the den. He'd had a dreadful night and now 00:18:44.72\00:18:48.96 he was desperate to know what had happened to Daniel. 00:18:48.99\00:18:51.99 He called out to Daniel wondering if there would be any 00:18:52.03\00:18:58.23 response. Daniel just had a nice quiet evening in the company of 00:18:58.27\00:19:03.44 the lions. He probably fell fast asleep with his head against one 00:19:03.47\00:19:08.04 of those big cats. How did he do that? How did he remains calm 00:19:08.08\00:19:12.75 and relaxed in the lion's den? Well that's what King Darius 00:19:12.78\00:19:16.72 wanted to know as he helped his friend out of the lion's den and 00:19:16.75\00:19:21.32 gratefully embraced him. How did he survive? Well first of all 00:19:21.36\00:19:30.93 because he had his mind fixed on God, the God who can give us 00:19:30.97\00:19:36.60 peace in the midst of terrible circumstances and most 00:19:36.64\00:19:40.64 importantly as Daniel told Darius, My God sent his angel 00:19:40.68\00:19:46.31 and he shut the lions' mouths. Daniel believed in a God who's 00:19:46.35\00:19:52.82 sovereign over all, sovereign over history. He could turn the 00:19:52.85\00:19:57.19 captivity of Israel into a blessing. Sovereign over 00:19:57.23\00:20:00.73 individual lives, he had saved Daniel's three friends from the 00:20:00.76\00:20:05.13 fiery furnace and used him as a witness in a heathen land. 00:20:05.17\00:20:09.44 Sovereign over every situation. God could tame the lions in the 00:20:09.47\00:20:14.51 darkness of the den. Remember the angel that came down to shut 00:20:14.54\00:20:20.08 the lions' mouths was coming from the creator, the one who 00:20:20.12\00:20:23.99 made these magnificent creatures in the first place. 00:20:24.02\00:20:27.66 He was their master. With the Creator's authority that angel 00:20:27.69\00:20:33.90 could've made the lions do just about anything. God took care of 00:20:33.93\00:20:39.80 his man in a time of crisis. And we have a promise of the same 00:20:39.83\00:20:44.64 kind of protection. Listen to what it says here in Psalm 91: 00:20:44.67\00:20:49.74 Isn't that reassuring? God promises us the same kind of 00:21:44.17\00:21:51.04 protection that he provided for Daniel. One cold winter day 00:21:51.07\00:22:02.58 toward the end of World War II an elderly woman walked out of 00:22:02.62\00:22:06.79 what seemed even worse than a lion's den. She was leaving the 00:22:06.82\00:22:11.13 Ravensbruck concentration camp where countless human beings had 00:22:11.16\00:22:16.00 been systematically starved and worked to death. As the heavy 00:22:16.03\00:22:19.73 gates closed behind her, Corrie Ten Boom could hardly believe 00:22:19.77\00:22:24.61 that she was alive and free. Corrie had been arrested by the 00:22:24.64\00:22:29.54 Nazis for hiding Jews in own home. She and her family 00:22:29.58\00:22:34.25 believe in a God who gives refuge to all and they committed 00:22:34.28\00:22:38.29 themselves to this dangerous work. This quiet matron in her 00:22:38.32\00:22:43.83 50s had not imagined she could survive the horrors of the labor 00:22:43.86\00:22:48.93 camp. But God had sustained her during the ordeal. Corrie saw 00:22:48.96\00:22:52.87 many women brutalized at Ravensbruck, many perished, 00:22:52.90\00:22:56.57 including her dear sister Betsie. But many of those woman 00:22:56.60\00:23:02.41 died with the name of Jesus on their lips because of the 00:23:02.44\00:23:05.61 witness of those two sisters. And those women, Corrie wrote, 00:23:05.65\00:23:11.52 were well worth all our suffering. Finally as a result 00:23:11.55\00:23:17.96 of what turned out to be a clerical error, Corrie was 00:23:17.99\00:23:22.03 released. One week later, can you imagine it, a week after her 00:23:22.06\00:23:26.07 release, all the women her age at Ravensbruck were gassed. As 00:23:26.10\00:23:31.64 she walked out of this lion's den, the place of unspeakable 00:23:31.67\00:23:35.44 suffering, Corrie had learned something invaluable. This is 00:23:35.48\00:23:39.91 the testimony she would give all over the world. There is no 00:23:39.95\00:23:44.29 place on earth so dark, so deep that God's love is not deeper 00:23:44.32\00:23:50.99 still. Yes Daniel discovered that God's love is deep enough 00:23:51.03\00:23:56.30 to penetrate that stone sealing the lion's den. He found his God 00:23:56.33\00:24:00.54 to be a very present help in trouble because Daniel had 00:24:00.57\00:24:05.94 always been very present with his Lord. You might be dealing 00:24:05.97\00:24:09.84 with your own personal den of lions right now. Just remember 00:24:09.88\00:24:14.88 that the same Lord who delivered Daniel will deliver you too. 00:24:14.92\00:24:20.62 Daniel had confidence in God in the midst of the lion's den and 00:24:20.66\00:24:27.63 that same God can shut the mouths of the problems called 00:24:27.66\00:24:31.97 lions in your own life. If you'd like God to do that for you, why 00:24:32.00\00:24:37.07 not ask him right now as we pray? Dear heavenly Father, 00:24:37.11\00:24:44.01 thank you for giving us the example of Daniel in the lion's 00:24:44.05\00:24:47.45 den.
