¤ ¤ 00:00:01.36\00:00:25.59 In 2003, Greg Lesvada drove a black Lamborghini Diablo rubbed 00:00:25.65\00:00:31.73 shoulders with high-powered people such as U.S. President 00:00:31.76\00:00:35.83 Bill Clinton, lived between multimillion penthouses and 00:00:35.86\00:00:39.83 bought racehorses just for fun. His world was one of extreme 00:00:39.87\00:00:45.71 extravagance and self-obsession. During the 1990s Lesvada went 00:00:45.74\00:00:50.45 from being a university student dropout to Australia's number 00:00:50.48\00:00:55.05 one adult website tycoon. Money was pouring into his bank 00:00:55.08\00:00:59.59 accounts and he was suddenly a multimillionaire. He was living 00:00:59.65\00:01:04.99 living the dream. He'd sleep in, get up, have brunch, buy a new 00:01:05.03\00:01:09.56 car and then head to the air port and be in another country 00:01:09.60\00:01:14.10 by the close of the day. His whole world revolved around 00:01:14.14\00:01:18.41 himself and with the world at his feet he lived a life of an 00:01:18.44\00:01:23.78 international playboy. Lesvada hosted weekend long parties in 00:01:23.81\00:01:28.32 Las Vegas for friends and web masters who had developed his 00:01:28.35\00:01:32.99 many adult websites. But bills for those parties often exceeded 00:01:33.02\00:01:37.63 $100,000 which at the time seemed like nothing to him. His 00:01:37.66\00:01:44.37 extravagance was limitless. It was all about status. He just 00:01:44.40\00:01:49.90 craved the excessive admiration and attention of his friends and 00:01:49.94\00:01:55.38 colleagues. Over the next few years Lesvada plowed his cash 00:01:55.41\00:02:00.72 into stocks and property. At its peak his property portfolio was 00:02:00.75\00:02:06.15 worth 30 million dollars. Now while he also bought racehorses 00:02:06.19\00:02:11.43 just for the fun of it, his real passion was fast cars. He owned 00:02:11.49\00:02:18.27 four Lamborghini's and seven BMWs But this extravagant 00:02:18.30\00:02:23.81 lifestyle and poor business management sent him on a 00:02:23.84\00:02:29.34 downward spiral to a broken marriage, heroine addiction and 00:02:29.38\00:02:35.82 finally bankruptcy By 2008 Lesvada was back where it all began living with mom and 00:02:35.88\00:02:41.42 dad. His sole asset was a rusty old beaut. He lived in his 00:02:41.49\00:02:46.59 parents' spare bedroom and spent most weekends helping mom 00:02:46.63\00:02:51.33 with the housework. All that glittered gold and grandiosity 00:02:51.37\00:02:56.97 had turned to ash. But Greg Lesvada is not alone in his 00:02:57.01\00:03:02.14 pride, greed, and craving for excessive admiration and 00:03:02.18\00:03:07.28 attention. Although an extreme example, in a way he typifies 00:03:07.32\00:03:12.89 our growing self-obsession. That's the trend in our society. 00:03:12.92\00:03:18.46 From attention-seeking celebrities to digital over 00:03:18.49\00:03:23.67 sharing, the obsession of presenting the right image on 00:03:23.70\00:03:27.80 Facebook to preoccupation with selfies and the boom in cosmetic 00:03:27.84\00:03:33.61 surgery, narcissistic behavior is all around us. It's as if 00:03:33.64\00:03:39.38 we're living through a narcissism epidemic. It's all 00:03:39.41\00:03:42.72 "look at me, look at me. " Tell me, how worried should we be 00:03:42.75\00:03:48.19 about our growing self-obsession I mean, why are we becoming so 00:03:48.22\00:03:53.63 narcissistic? And what, if anything, can we do about it? 00:03:53.66\00:03:58.70 Well we can learn a lot from an ancient king with a very 00:03:58.73\00:04:03.71 modern problem. Nebuchadnezzar was the greatest king on earth 00:04:03.77\00:04:09.18 and he had every reason to be proud of his achievements. From 00:04:09.24\00:04:13.92 his luxurious palaces in the most beautiful city in the world 00:04:13.95\00:04:18.62 Babylon, he ruled over the biggest empire that the world 00:04:18.65\00:04:23.76 had ever seen. And he had built it all himself. Back then, 00:04:23.79\00:04:28.23 because there was so much confusion about what to believe 00:04:28.26\00:04:32.63 in, he ended up essentially just believing in himself. It was all 00:04:32.67\00:04:38.14 me, me, me. This is the story of his struggle to accept that 00:04:38.17\00:04:44.98 he wasn't the center of the universe. It climaxes with the 00:04:45.01\00:04:50.92 king in a field eating grass like a cow, completely mad. 00:04:50.95\00:04:56.22 But it has a good ending. So join me on a visit to ancient 00:04:56.26\00:05:01.03 Babylon to see what we modern people could learn from a great 00:05:01.06\00:05:05.80 self-obsessed warrior king. 00:05:05.83\00:05:08.57 ¤ ¤ 00:05:08.60\00:05:28.42 Between 1870 and 1930 a seismic shift took place across 00:05:28.46\00:05:33.50 the western world. Since the fall of the Roman empire the 00:05:33.53\00:05:38.50 world view which had dominated the societies and cultures of 00:05:38.53\00:05:41.90 the west had been essentially Christian, but now it was 00:05:41.94\00:05:47.24 replaced by a different world view, that of secular humanism. 00:05:47.28\00:05:51.58 Now secular humanism is the belief that the only things that 00:05:51.61\00:05:55.68 the only things that can exist and have importance are those 00:05:55.72\00:05:59.72 that can be measured and observed by people. 00:05:59.75\00:06:03.26 The Christian God, therefore, does not and cannot exist 00:06:03.29\00:06:06.86 according to this philosophy. Secular humanism is at the very 00:06:06.90\00:06:11.83 heart of the movement of our society's move towards atheism. 00:06:11.90\00:06:16.81 The philosophical roots of secular humanism were 00:06:16.84\00:06:21.01 established by thinkers in the mid-19th century. The very 00:06:21.04\00:06:25.61 foundations of our society were shaken in the years from 1914 00:06:25.65\00:06:29.88 with the outbreak of World War One and it's horrors and then 00:06:29.92\00:06:34.66 instead of ushering in a global era of prosperity, the world was 00:06:34.69\00:06:39.39 plunged into the Great Depression in 1929 and into the 00:06:39.43\00:06:43.53 1930s. At the same time, through science and education humanity 00:06:43.57\00:06:49.44 was succeeding in transforming the lives of millions. For many 00:06:49.50\00:06:54.71 people science and man-made inventions were humanity's hope 00:06:54.74\00:07:00.32 for the future. So that's where they put their faith. For many 00:07:00.35\00:07:05.89 people the old ways of understanding the world 00:07:05.92\00:07:09.32 didn't seem to work anymore. So what do you do when there is so 00:07:09.39\00:07:13.13 much confusion around you and you don't know what to believe? 00:07:13.16\00:07:16.90 You believe in yourself. Whatever you say goes. 00:07:16.93\00:07:21.44 You become the center of the universe. You're all that 00:07:21.50\00:07:25.14 matters. After all the essence of secular humanism is that man 00:07:25.17\00:07:30.31 is the measure of all things. This is the background to our 00:07:30.35\00:07:34.88 mounting epidemic of self- obsession. What's the solution 00:07:34.92\00:07:39.45 to this narcissistic attitude that's permeating our society? 00:07:39.49\00:07:44.43 Can anything be done about it? Well we can learn a lot from an 00:07:44.46\00:07:48.93 ancient king, Nebuchadnezzar, who struggled with this very 00:07:48.96\00:07:54.77 modern problem. In the first part of the sixth century B.C. 00:07:54.80\00:08:00.18 King Nebuchadnezzar ruled over the greatest empire on earth. It 00:08:00.21\00:08:05.55 stretched from the borders of Egypt across to the Gulf of 00:08:05.58\00:08:08.85 Persia. His armies had marched victorious across the then-known 00:08:08.88\00:08:13.52 world. He had built the greatest city on earth, the city 00:08:13.56\00:08:18.63 of Babylon. He had every reason to be proud of himself. The 00:08:18.66\00:08:23.70 religion of Babylon was polytheistic, which means that 00:08:23.73\00:08:26.97 they worshiped many gods. We know that they worshiped at 00:08:27.00\00:08:30.17 least 2400 different gods and that is just what we know about. 00:08:30.21\00:08:35.31 There were probably many more. But during his conquest, 00:08:35.34\00:08:41.15 Nebuchadnezzar had come across this very unusual God, the God 00:08:41.18\00:08:45.59 of the people of Judah. This was a strange God because he claimed 00:08:45.62\00:08:49.99 that he was the only true God, that basically no other gods 00:08:50.03\00:08:54.96 existed apart from him. This was something unheard of back in 00:08:55.03\00:08:59.93 Nebuchadnezzar's day. And there was something else. 00:08:59.97\00:09:03.74 Nebuchadnezzar had completely conquered Judah in his third and 00:09:03.77\00:09:09.94 final raid in 586 B.C. That year after besieging the capital 00:09:09.98\00:09:14.98 Jerusalem he had broken through and destroyed the city and its 00:09:15.02\00:09:20.06 temple. There was utter chaos as his soldiers ransacked and luted 00:09:20.09\00:09:24.66 the city. They captured most of the inhabitants and carried them 00:09:24.69\00:09:29.26 off as slaves. The common belief back then was that if your 00:09:29.30\00:09:34.20 nation defeated another nation, it meant that your gods were 00:09:34.24\00:09:38.87 stronger than the gods of the defeated nation. So how dare 00:09:38.91\00:09:43.35 Judah's God claim that he was the only one and that Babylon's 00:09:43.38\00:09:47.78 gods didn't even exist. But Nebuchadnezzar has actually 00:09:47.82\00:09:52.59 learned quite a lot about the God of Judah in the last 35 00:09:52.62\00:09:57.33 years or so. You see he'd become friends with one of the slaves 00:09:57.36\00:10:01.50 that he had captured and taken from Judah during his first 00:10:01.53\00:10:05.53 campaign in 605 B.C. The slave's name was Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar 00:10:05.57\00:10:11.47 liked Daniel. He made him one of his chief advisors. But Daniel 00:10:11.51\00:10:16.71 kept confusing and challenging him. Not only did he refuse to 00:10:16.75\00:10:21.55 conform and worship the gods of Babylon, but he stubbornly 00:10:21.58\00:10:26.65 kept telling him about the one true God. Nebuchadnezzar 00:10:26.69\00:10:31.66 recognized and acknowledged this true God, but after a while he 00:10:31.69\00:10:36.20 fell back into his old ways of pride and self-obsession. 00:10:36.23\00:10:41.34 Nebuchadnezzar decided that he would build a gigantic statue of 00:10:41.37\00:10:46.14 himself for everyone to worship. But even then, the great God of 00:10:46.17\00:10:50.85 Daniel found a way to remind him that he was much more powerful 00:10:50.91\00:10:55.55 and bigger than the king. It wasn't so easy to ignore 00:10:55.58\00:10:59.92 Daniel's God. Now in 569 B.C. Nebuchadnezzar had been king for 00:10:59.95\00:11:06.83 35 years and now he has another dream. You can find it recorded 00:11:06.90\00:11:12.40 in the fourth chapter of the Bible book of Daniel. In fact, 00:11:12.43\00:11:17.24 this chapter could be one of the most fascinating in all the 00:11:17.27\00:11:21.74 Bible because it wasn't written by a prophet or anything like 00:11:21.78\00:11:26.21 that, rather the whole chapter was actually written by 00:11:26.25\00:11:30.45 Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonian empire himself. This 00:11:30.49\00:11:34.62 is the message that the king wanted to share with everyone 00:11:34.66\00:11:38.79 in his empire including Daniel and his scribe. 00:11:38.83\00:11:43.77 What's especially interesting about this is that he's echoing 00:12:03.42\00:12:08.86 the words of the prophet Daniel when he had interpreted the 00:12:08.89\00:12:13.29 dream of the great metal statue years before. The whole point of 00:12:13.33\00:12:18.57 that dream had been that Nebuchadnezzar had to accept 00:12:18.60\00:12:22.60 that the most high God ruled over the affairs of men and that 00:12:22.64\00:12:26.98 Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom would not last forever, because in the 00:12:27.01\00:12:32.21 end only God's kingdom would rule. It's taken him a long time 00:12:32.25\00:12:37.39 but something has happened that has finally brought 00:12:37.42\00:12:40.26 Nebuchadnezzar to accept it and he's going to tell us all about 00:12:40.29\00:12:44.49 it. He continues... 00:12:44.53\00:12:47.00 Just like as it happened with his first dream of the statue 00:13:20.80\00:13:26.20 all the king's wise men were unable to interpret the meaning 00:13:26.23\00:13:31.84 of the dream until Daniel comes in. The king then describes the 00:13:31.87\00:13:37.48 dream to Daniel. Here it is in his own words. 00:13:37.51\00:13:40.92 When the king had finished telling Daniel this dream he saw 00:14:49.48\00:14:55.72 the look on Daniel's face and it wasn't good news. He told Daniel 00:14:55.79\00:15:01.13 to pull no punches, to be completely honest with him about 00:15:01.16\00:15:05.53 the meaning of the dream. And so the king said, Belteshazzar, do 00:15:05.57\00:15:11.34 not let the dream or it's meaning alarm you and so Daniel 00:15:11.37\00:15:15.38 began to explain the dream to the king. 00:15:15.41\00:15:18.45 Nebuchadnezzar seems to have taken this dream seriously. He 00:16:24.71\00:16:30.15 must have thought carefully about his life, his self 00:16:30.19\00:16:32.95 obsession and his pride because the events the dream foretold 00:16:32.99\00:16:37.63 did not happen until a year later and those 12 months were 00:16:37.66\00:16:41.73 also a time of great achievement for the king. For in them he 00:16:41.76\00:16:45.77 finally managed to conquer Egypt the old enemy from his youth. 00:16:45.80\00:16:52.14 Finally Nebuchadnezzar was king over the empire that he'd always 00:16:52.17\00:16:56.75 dreamt of. And not only was the king over the biggest empire 00:16:56.78\00:17:00.98 the world had ever seen but he also ruled over the biggest 00:17:01.02\00:17:06.52 and greatest city in the entire world, the city of Babylon. 00:17:06.55\00:17:12.06 His father had started its rebuilding but King 00:17:12.09\00:17:15.10 Nebuchadnezzar had made it three times larger than it had been 00:17:15.13\00:17:19.40 before. Within the city he had reached the Euphrates river and 00:17:19.43\00:17:23.71 surrounded the city with double walls and even triple walls in 00:17:23.74\00:17:27.98 some places. He had built not one, but three, palaces for 00:17:28.01\00:17:32.08 himself, one of which contained the hanging gardens, one of the 00:17:32.11\00:17:37.59 seven wonders of the ancient world. Not only was it a mighty 00:17:37.62\00:17:42.02 city but it was also the most beautiful city in all the world. 00:17:42.06\00:17:47.20 It's outer walls were yellow and its gates were glazed with blue. 00:17:47.26\00:17:52.37 His palaces were faced with rose-colored tiles and its many 00:17:52.40\00:17:57.74 temples gleamed in dazzling white. At the Pergamum museum 00:17:57.77\00:18:02.44 in Berlin you can see the only part of ancient Babylon that's 00:18:02.48\00:18:06.95 still standing. You can see the main gate. It's called the 00:18:06.98\00:18:11.45 Ishtar gate named after the goddess of love and it was 00:18:11.49\00:18:15.92 actually built by King Nebuchadnezzar. 00:18:15.96\00:18:20.06 Nebuchadnezzar was incredibly proud of what he'd accomplished. 00:18:20.10\00:18:24.57 He thought that it was due to his strength and to his 00:18:24.60\00:18:28.80 intelligence. In fact, the king was so proud that he even 00:18:28.84\00:18:32.71 stamped the bricks of his new buildings with his name and 00:18:32.74\00:18:37.25 boastful claims about himself. You see, Nebuchadnezzar wanted 00:18:37.28\00:18:41.75 to make sure that he would never be erased from history 00:18:41.78\00:18:45.49 like other mighty kings of the ancient world and all of this 00:18:45.52\00:18:49.06 fits perfectly with the picture that we get from the Bible 00:18:49.09\00:18:53.29 about what King Nebuchadnezzar was actually like; totally self 00:18:53.33\00:18:58.07 obsessed and filled with pride. Because of his pride the book 00:18:58.10\00:19:02.80 of Daniel goes on to say that everything that the dream 00:19:02.84\00:19:06.71 described happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. One day he was 00:19:06.74\00:19:10.55 walking on the roof of one of his palaces admiring the city 00:19:10.58\00:19:14.08 and feeling pleased with himself and this is what he said: 00:19:14.12\00:19:17.62 And immediately he heard a voice come from heaven that said to 00:19:26.46\00:19:30.57 him... 00:19:30.60\00:19:56.73 And from that moment Nebuchadnezzar went mad. 00:19:56.76\00:20:01.30 Yes he went stark raving mad. He had to be driven away from the 00:20:01.33\00:20:07.10 city and he started living like a wild animal. He lived outdoors 00:20:07.14\00:20:11.14 His hair and nails 00:20:11.17\00:20:12.54 grew long and he ate grass like a cow. Now it's absolutely 00:20:12.57\00:20:17.91 fascinating that a rare find in a British museum corroborates 00:20:17.95\00:20:22.28 the Biblical account of the madness of King Nebuchadnezzar: 00:20:22.32\00:20:26.55 The tablet is broken so the text is incomplete, however, the 00:20:26.62\00:20:31.59 tablet plainly 00:20:31.63\00:20:32.96 refers to King Nebuchadnezzar and it says that his life 00:20:32.99\00:20:36.63 appears to be of no value to him, that his orders are 00:20:36.67\00:20:40.30 contradictory, that he doesn't listen to his advisors. He is 00:20:40.34\00:20:44.94 neglecting his family and he isn't performing his duties as 00:20:44.97\00:20:49.71 king. Something is seriously wrong with the king and no one 00:20:49.74\00:20:54.28 seems to be able to help him. Now you don't need much of an 00:20:54.32\00:20:59.12 imagination to see how this fits perfectly with what events are 00:20:59.15\00:21:03.63 described in the Bible book of Daniel. So let's go back to the 00:21:03.66\00:21:08.10 story. After the seven years that had been prophesied in the 00:21:08.13\00:21:12.53 dream notice what Nebuchadnezzar says: 00:21:12.57\00:21:16.54 The king only lived for two more years after the events of his 00:21:28.12\00:21:31.85 dream were all fulfilled. He never left strong heirs to rule 00:21:31.92\00:21:35.62 his kingdom. His rule was succeeded by a series of 00:21:35.66\00:21:39.73 incompetent leaders as his only son had been assassinated. His 00:21:39.79\00:21:45.13 kingdom never did last forever. And I guess there's a lesson 00:21:45.17\00:21:51.01 here about how God is in control and how God's kingdom will last 00:21:51.04\00:21:56.85 forever. And that's a good lesson. It's one of the lessons 00:21:56.88\00:22:00.65 that God wanted Nebuchadnezzar to learn. But there's another 00:22:00.68\00:22:04.39 lesson here for us today. Nebuchadnezzar had a problem 00:22:04.42\00:22:09.22 with pride. He was self-obsessed He was a narcissist. Now he had 00:22:09.26\00:22:13.93 every reason to be proud by the standards of the world. Look at 00:22:14.00\00:22:18.57 all his conquests. Look at all his wealth. And he was sure that 00:22:18.60\00:22:23.17 he was right about everything. He was the center of his 00:22:23.20\00:22:28.01 universe. But the astonishing thing to us is how much God 00:22:28.04\00:22:32.78 still loved Nebuchadnezzar. Yes even though he didn't believe in 00:22:32.81\00:22:38.02 God and was a cruel ruler by our standards and, yes, he was self 00:22:38.05\00:22:43.32 obsessed, but the God of heaven loved him and patiently revealed 00:22:43.36\00:22:48.56 himself to King Nebuchadnezzar. He did it through Daniel and his 00:22:48.60\00:22:53.37 friends. He sent him dreams and troubled his conscience and when 00:22:53.40\00:22:57.81 it became necessary he allowed misfortune to come into his life 00:22:57.84\00:23:02.54 and shake him up and change his world view. For most people 00:23:02.58\00:23:07.28 seeing the truth about life is a process and sometimes a long 00:23:07.32\00:23:12.19 one and so it was with king Nebuchadnezzar. He struggled to 00:23:12.22\00:23:16.46 accept the existence of God and become a believer in the one 00:23:16.49\00:23:20.96 true God of heaven. However, we do know, as the king wrote 00:23:21.00\00:23:25.27 himself, that he came to recognize God and acknowledge 00:23:25.30\00:23:29.47 his existence and power. But merely believing that God exists 00:23:29.50\00:23:34.81 is not enough. You have to trust him enough to invite him into 00:23:34.84\00:23:39.95 your life. You have to come to the point where you accept that 00:23:39.98\00:23:45.05 without him in your life it's hopeless, but with him 00:23:45.09\00:23:49.22 everything is possible. And this is the answer to our modern 00:23:49.26\00:23:54.20 problem of self-obsession and pride. We've got to recognize 00:23:54.23\00:23:59.10 that there is an almighty God who is the center of the 00:23:59.13\00:24:03.61 universe and he's the God who accepts us and loves us just 00:24:03.64\00:24:08.08 as we are. We don't have to prove ourselves or make 00:24:08.11\00:24:12.28 ourselves look important. We already are important because he 00:24:12.31\00:24:17.65 loves us and thinks we're important enough to sacrifice 00:24:17.69\00:24:21.69 everything for us, even his only Son Jesus. Now we don't know 00:24:21.72\00:24:27.40 whether King Nebuchadnezzar came to that point. But I'm not 00:24:27.43\00:24:33.03 thinking only about Nebuchadnezzar now. 00:24:33.07\00:24:36.81 I'm thinking about you. How has the God of heaven been working 00:24:36.84\00:24:42.01 in your life? How far along have you come? Pride is a tough thing 00:24:42.04\00:24:47.18 to break through and changing a world view can be incredibly 00:24:47.22\00:24:51.72 difficult because we depend on it for everything. But look how 00:24:51.75\00:24:56.42 loving and patient God was with Nebuchadnezzar. Look at how 00:24:56.49\00:25:01.26 loving and patient he's been with you. God leads each one of 00:25:01.30\00:25:06.00 us in different ways. If you were to ask God to continue to 00:25:06.03\00:25:10.37 lead you, if you want to know him better, why don't you invite 00:25:10.41\00:25:14.71 him into your life right now as we pray: 00:25:14.74\00:25:17.98 Dear heavenly Father, as we look back on our lives, we recognize 00:25:18.01\00:25:23.35 that we haven't been alone and that although we haven't always 00:25:23.39\00:25:28.66 acknowledged you you've always been there with us. Thank you 00:25:28.69\00:25:33.13 for patiently leading us through the circumstances of our lives. 00:25:33.16\00:25:38.10 Thank you for gently revealing yourself to us.
