Now 00:01:23.48\00:01:26.31 our topic today is a fascinating one, The Killer Comes to Dinner. 00:01:26.35\00:01:32.12 What's that all about? 00:01:32.15\00:01:34.72 It's actually pretty serious. Oh? He's fed three times a day, 00:01:34.76\00:01:39.19 he doesn't pay for his meals, he's a free loader, he loves 00:01:39.23\00:01:44.83 cholesterol, fat and grease, that's his favorite foods and he 00:01:44.87\00:01:50.44 gets bigger and bigger and he grows more and more and he grows 00:01:50.47\00:01:54.54 and takes up more and more room within our arteries. The killer, 00:01:54.58\00:02:03.35 he strikes without 00:02:03.39\00:02:05.32 any warning and in one out of three cases the first 00:02:05.35\00:02:11.13 sign that he's there is also the last sign. Oh this is serious. 00:02:11.16\00:02:15.50 Sudden death. Atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries. And 00:02:15.53\00:02:21.07 somehow the killer is directly associated with what we put into 00:02:21.10\00:02:26.68 our systems, food. 00:02:26.71\00:02:29.34 So what we put on our tables, The Killer Comes to Dinner. 00:02:29.38\00:02:33.62 Yeah, we feed him and he takes up residence inside of our 00:02:33.65\00:02:38.95 arteries and then without any warning, he's not very grateful, 00:02:38.99\00:02:42.32 he just strikes. The first sign for most people is sudden death. 00:02:42.36\00:02:48.80 Let me show you what that killer really looks like. Let's take 00:02:48.83\00:02:53.80 I first woke up, so to speak, when I was working on the 00:02:53.84\00:02:56.71 anesthesia service learning how to put people to sleep. And I 00:02:56.74\00:03:00.24 was seeing my patients for the next day's surgery for coronary 00:03:00.28\00:03:03.11 artery bypass surgery in order to bypass clogged 00:03:03.14\00:03:06.38 arteries in their 00:03:06.41\00:03:07.75 heart. Because it was late at night I drew the man's blood 00:03:07.78\00:03:10.82 test and when I took the blood to the laboratory and had it 00:03:10.85\00:03:13.72 processed I couldn't believe my eyes. Now normally this liquid 00:03:13.76\00:03:18.19 layer floating on top of the blood clot is quite transparent, 00:03:18.23\00:03:21.26 yellow, but quite clear. You can see right through it. The blood 00:03:21.30\00:03:24.93 in this patient's tube, however, was anything but clear. The 00:03:24.97\00:03:28.44 serum floating on his clot was thick and greasy white, it 00:03:28.47\00:03:32.27 looked like glue, in fact it stuck to the sides of the blood 00:03:32.31\00:03:35.24 tube when I shook the tube. I went back to the patient. I said 00:03:35.28\00:03:38.78 Mr. Phillips did you eat before you came to the hospital tonight 00:03:38.81\00:03:41.92 He said yes. I said, what did you have? He said I had a cheese 00:03:41.95\00:03:44.69 burger and a milk shake. And when he said that I realized 00:03:44.72\00:03:48.39 that what I was looking at in his tube was all the fat in the 00:03:48.42\00:03:52.46 beef burger, all the butter fat in the cheese and the butter fat 00:03:52.49\00:03:55.56 in the ice cream and in the milk shake. And all this fat had 00:03:55.60\00:03:59.23 oozed out into his blood and actually turned his blood fat. 00:03:59.27\00:04:02.64 Well 30, 40, 50 years of keeping your blood very fatty creates 00:04:02.67\00:04:07.61 changes in the blood vessels that are very dangerous. Over 00:04:07.64\00:04:11.98 the years arteries can become clogged with fatty material. 00:04:12.01\00:04:15.68 Then a blood clot can form blocking the blood flow 00:04:15.72\00:04:18.99 completely. If the artery leads to the heart a lack of oxygen 00:04:19.02\00:04:23.69 can cause heart muscle to die. That's a heart attack. If the 00:04:23.73\00:04:28.43 clogged artery leads to the brain, the patient has a stroke. 00:04:28.46\00:04:32.07 The next morning we took Mr. Phillips to the operating room 00:04:32.10\00:04:37.84 and I put him to sleep and the surgeon opened up his chest. 00:04:37.87\00:04:40.34 And from these arteries he began pulling out yellow greasy 00:04:40.38\00:04:47.65 deposits of fatty material called atherosclerosis. 00:04:47.68\00:04:54.19 It's really amazing isn't it? If you're an Australian, if you're 00:04:54.22\00:04:57.56 an American at 20 years of age, you have 20 percent narrowing 00:04:57.59\00:05:01.33 already of these coronary arteries. By time you're 50 you 00:05:01.36\00:05:05.63 probably have 50, 60 percent narrowing already and you have 00:05:05.67\00:05:09.14 no symptoms. The killer is enjoying his presence within 00:05:09.17\00:05:13.88 your arteries, you're feeding him every day. By the time 00:05:13.91\00:05:17.21 you're 70 years of age you might have 70, 80, 90 percent 00:05:17.25\00:05:20.92 narrowing and you still don't have any clue what's going on. 00:05:20.95\00:05:24.59 The first sign, if you're lucky, is angina pectoris, that's sort 00:05:24.62\00:05:30.16 of a chest pain like an elephant sitting on your chest. It comes 00:05:30.19\00:05:34.96 and then you relax and it goes. That means the artery is not 00:05:35.00\00:05:39.70 blocked but it's narrowed. But it's blocked and you have a 00:05:39.73\00:05:43.24 blood clot. You know, that's when no blood is reaching the 00:05:43.27\00:05:47.44 heart anymore and the heart begins to, the muscle begins to 00:05:47.48\00:05:51.81 die. Now it's really heart disease. You know, the 00:05:51.85\00:05:56.32 interesting part is that this disease, atherosclerosis, is not 00:05:56.35\00:06:00.32 just affecting the coronary arteries, but the arteries in 00:06:00.36\00:06:03.49 the brain, to the ear, to the eyes, to the carotids, they're 00:06:03.53\00:06:09.36 affecting the kidney arteries, 00:06:09.40\00:06:11.13 it affects the penal arteries responsible for impotence, to a 00:06:11.17\00:06:15.60 large extent it has to do with the femoral arteries to the legs 00:06:15.64\00:06:19.74 Then you have claudication or you have gangrene. So this is 00:06:19.77\00:06:24.38 really a very systemic disease process. It's really one disease 00:06:24.41\00:06:30.05 called atherosclerosis even thought they give it different 00:06:30.09\00:06:32.35 names based on the location. 00:06:32.39\00:06:35.12 Then it affects the whole body. 00:06:35.16\00:06:36.49 Yeah and so therefore if we take care of coronary artery disease 00:06:36.52\00:06:40.03 we actually take care of the whole circulatory system right? 00:06:40.06\00:06:43.06 So that's a very important concept to get across I think. 00:06:43.10\00:06:45.57 So this is a very insidious disease. It works by stealth. 00:06:45.60\00:06:51.17 Well that means that how can I know if I've got it? 00:06:51.21\00:06:55.81 Now you're worried then? 00:06:55.84\00:06:57.25 Yes. How can I tell? 00:06:57.28\00:07:00.48 You know you don't have a clue. And so the government became 00:07:00.52\00:07:03.72 very interested. Why is this? What is the nature 00:07:03.75\00:07:07.52 of this disease? 00:07:07.56\00:07:08.89 And they began to launch a major study called the Framingham 00:07:08.92\00:07:13.36 study. It's a town of about 50,000 people. They enrolled in 00:07:13.40\00:07:18.93 1949 some 5200 people who probably had no obvious disease 00:07:18.97\00:07:25.87 processes. And they said we want to follow these people. Every 00:07:25.91\00:07:29.14 three years they had examinations and they watched 00:07:29.18\00:07:32.11 these people year after year after year and they recorded the 00:07:32.15\00:07:37.19 diseases. They recorded the hospitalizations. They recorded 00:07:37.22\00:07:40.12 the deaths. This was all done before computers. This was a 00:07:40.16\00:07:43.53 monumental study. The study's still even today going on. It's 00:07:43.56\00:07:47.60 now a three generation study. It's the gold standard. It's the 00:07:47.63\00:07:52.50 ultimate study that helps us understand what heart disease 00:07:52.53\00:07:58.14 was. You asked the question, how can I tell? You really can't 00:07:58.17\00:08:01.91 tell because it's asymptomatic, it has no symptoms. That says 00:08:01.94\00:08:07.02 almost too late, isn't it? 00:08:07.05\00:08:08.38 So who is at risk from this hardening of the arteries, this 00:08:08.42\00:08:12.79 cardiovascular disease? I mean it affects 100,000 Australians 00:08:12.82\00:08:17.76 with heart attacks, with strokes each year. It kills over 50,000 00:08:17.79\00:08:23.57 Australians. It costs our economy eight billion dollars. 00:08:23.60\00:08:27.70 Who's at risk? Who does it affect? 00:08:27.74\00:08:31.21 You know that's so interesting. This disease is not really a 00:08:31.24\00:08:35.24 respecter of persons, their gender or their color or their 00:08:35.28\00:08:40.85 origin. It strikes anywhere. But in general, it has to do with 00:08:40.88\00:08:47.96 our understanding of the disease and what we're willing to do for 00:08:47.99\00:08:50.53 it. Now coming back to Framingham. 00:08:50.56\00:08:53.96 The little town outside of Boston? 00:08:54.00\00:08:56.87 That's right, that's right. So they started that program and 00:08:56.90\00:09:00.47 within six to 10 years they began to recognize that the 00:09:00.50\00:09:04.21 people that had high cholesterol levels compared to those with 00:09:04.24\00:09:08.44 low cholesterol levels in the study, they had three, four, 00:09:08.48\00:09:11.91 five times more often a heart attack. They said, ah, maybe 00:09:11.95\00:09:16.18 cholesterol is one of these factors that places you at risk. 00:09:16.22\00:09:19.35 Then they found out that those who were smokers had much more 00:09:19.39\00:09:23.49 heart disease than those who didn't. In those days they 00:09:23.53\00:09:25.79 always thought smoking caused lung cancer. But this is the 00:09:25.83\00:09:28.83 first time now, oh, it's related to heart disease as well. They 00:09:28.86\00:09:32.57 looked at blood pressure problems, they looked at 00:09:32.60\00:09:36.00 diabetes and they looked at overweight and they looked at 00:09:36.04\00:09:39.14 inactive lifestyle and they began to realize that these were 00:09:39.17\00:09:42.28 the risk factors, the factors that are drivers of this disease 00:09:42.31\00:09:46.41 I put these risk factors into an arch for educational purposes. 00:09:46.45\00:09:49.85 Just take a look here. The more risk factors the greater the 00:09:49.88\00:09:54.52 risk. It's not one plus one plus one plus one or two plus two 00:09:54.56\00:09:58.33 plus two. No. It's three times three. So it's a multiplication 00:09:58.36\00:10:04.00 here. So the more risk factors the higher the risk. So these 00:10:04.03\00:10:07.94 risk factors then drive this disease process. But there is 00:10:07.97\00:10:12.07 something aside from these mathematical predictions, the 00:10:12.11\00:10:19.51 estimates that we can make for all populations based on these 00:10:19.55\00:10:22.82 risk factors and that is that when you look at the next risk 00:10:22.85\00:10:26.39 arch as you see here, you notice that I have given them a special 00:10:26.42\00:10:31.23 color; that is the cholesterol, the high blood pressure, the 00:10:31.26\00:10:34.03 triglycerides and then you see the diabetes and the obesity. 00:10:34.06\00:10:37.43 These one, two, three, four, five risk factors are very 00:10:37.47\00:10:42.04 unique because there's something in common. 00:10:42.07\00:10:44.64 And what are they? 00:10:44.67\00:10:46.91 What do they have in common? There's something in common and 00:10:46.94\00:10:49.98 that is these risk factors, cholesterol, high blood pressure 00:10:50.01\00:10:54.65 triglycerides, diabetes and obesity, they relate to largely 00:10:54.68\00:11:00.59 what we put between our lips. The diet related risk factors. 00:11:00.62\00:11:06.26 So just think. The majority of risk factors that drive this 00:11:06.29\00:11:10.87 disease cause atherosclerosis and all the other diseases that 00:11:10.90\00:11:13.97 come with it are largely determined by what we put 00:11:14.00\00:11:16.71 between our lips. Our diet becomes very, very important. 00:11:16.74\00:11:20.38 How do we go about getting our cholesterol down? 00:11:20.41\00:11:22.81 Well you know medication is sort of the second line of 00:11:22.84\00:11:26.61 defense the way we look at it. If we cannot get 00:11:26.65\00:11:29.48 the cholesterol to 00:11:29.52\00:11:30.85 come down with dietary means then we always are very happy to 00:11:30.89\00:11:33.76 take a look at medications. That's what we think is the 00:11:33.79\00:11:37.16 second-best option because if you use diet then you have no 00:11:37.19\00:11:40.90 side effects and you can reduce your food bill and so on and so 00:11:40.93\00:11:45.17 forth. So but how do you do it dietarily? There are three 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.24 things. 00:11:48.27\00:11:49.60 That's what we all want to know. What are these three simple 00:11:49.64\00:11:52.04 things? 00:11:52.07\00:11:53.41 Number one: Don't eat cholesterol. Where do you find 00:11:53.44\00:11:56.24 the cholesterol? Only animal products. Liver is the highest, 00:11:56.28\00:12:01.18 then egg yolk, then shrimp and then beef, pork, and chicken is 00:12:01.22\00:12:06.15 the same amount of cholesterol. 00:12:06.19\00:12:08.29 So what are you saying? Are you saying that chicken has the same 00:12:08.32\00:12:13.46 amount of cholesterol as red meat? 00:12:13.50\00:12:15.73 You seem to be surprised. Yes. 00:12:15.76\00:12:19.60 You know everybody's surprised. When I say that people say no 00:12:19.63\00:12:22.54 that cannot be possible. Because they remember that chicken 00:12:22.57\00:12:26.61 probably has some advantages. 00:12:26.64\00:12:29.81 And it does. We usually recommend white meat. 00:12:29.84\00:12:32.05 That's right and it is lower in fat content, which is important. 00:12:32.08\00:12:37.49 Although the way chickens are raised nowadays a lot of things 00:12:37.52\00:12:40.42 are changing. They're already prepared when they come to you. 00:12:40.46\00:12:42.96 Whether it's white meat or red meat and whether it's pork or 00:12:42.99\00:12:46.93 not you know the amount of cholesterol is about the same. 00:12:46.96\00:12:49.96 So you want to reduce cholesterol which means you 00:12:50.00\00:12:52.47 better cut back on all animal products, okay? Of course, that 00:12:52.50\00:12:56.40 also includes eggs and so on. But number two: Really cut back 00:12:56.44\00:13:00.58 on saturated fats and trans fats Yeah, the trans fats are the 00:13:00.61\00:13:06.11 fats that you find in cakes and pies, the hydrogenated oils that 00:13:06.15\00:13:12.32 don't turn rancid and that's why they are liked by the industry. 00:13:12.35\00:13:16.22 So that's trans fats and that's what you find on the nutrition 00:13:16.26\00:13:20.36 label listed. Because even if it lists two grams it's really 00:13:20.40\00:13:24.73 pushing the liver into overdrive to make the cholesterol. So it's 00:13:24.77\00:13:28.70 trans fats. Then you have the saturated fat. These are the 00:13:28.74\00:13:32.11 fats that you find in animal products and maybe some coconut. 00:13:32.14\00:13:36.24 And the third one is use more soluble fiber because it kind 00:13:36.28\00:13:42.85 of ushers the cholesterol out and that's what you find in 00:13:42.88\00:13:46.65 beans and in oats. It's in oat bran. This is what helps you 00:13:46.69\00:13:50.06 there. The average of cholesterol levels of people who 00:13:50.09\00:13:55.00 attended the Pritikin Longevity Center and this is within less 00:13:55.03\00:13:59.60 than four weeks you can drop your cholesterol levels by 25 00:13:59.63\00:14:03.71 percent. The higher the cholesterol initially the bigger 00:14:03.74\00:14:07.18 the drop. We find the same thing in our CHIP program, the 00:14:07.21\00:14:09.78 Complete Health Improvement Program. Those people come to 00:14:09.81\00:14:12.61 us with the highest cholesterol levels. They have dropped for 00:14:12.65\00:14:16.12 25, 30, 35 percent within four weeks. So the dietary approach 00:14:16.15\00:14:21.32 works very, very well. And what the Pritikin people found in the 00:14:21.36\00:14:28.46 center was that people came to them because of heart disease. 00:14:28.50\00:14:32.10 They also found that the diabetes improved. They could be 00:14:32.13\00:14:35.57 off medication many times. They found that the blood pressure 00:14:35.60\00:14:38.87 came down. They found that they were eating more food than ever 00:14:38.91\00:14:42.51 before and yet they lost weight because the food they were 00:14:42.54\00:14:46.21 eating were foods that were basically low-fat foods and as 00:14:46.25\00:14:51.35 you know that is the most concentrated source of energy 00:14:51.39\00:14:54.69 in the diet. So when you cut back on oils, fats, and grease 00:14:54.72\00:14:58.96 you immediately lower your calorie intake and so weight 00:14:58.99\00:15:02.73 loss is being facilitated and with that blood pressures come 00:15:02.76\00:15:07.67 down, diabetes comes down, heart disease. All these kind of 00:15:07.70\00:15:10.41 things begin to happen. 00:15:10.44\00:15:11.77 In the meantime a young cardiologist at Harvard began to 00:15:11.81\00:15:17.78 think of what could be done to build on the encouraging 00:15:17.81\00:15:23.62 outcomes in the Pritikin Longevity Center program, right? 00:15:23.65\00:15:27.62 So what he did, he took 48 heart disease patients and he put half 00:15:27.66\00:15:32.93 of them on the common American Heart Association diet, not 00:15:32.96\00:15:37.20 quite as strict and rigid as the one that he put the other half 00:15:37.23\00:15:41.57 on and these were now people that he placed on a diet that 00:15:41.60\00:15:45.67 had only less than 10 percent of the calories in fat. Now just to 00:15:45.71\00:15:51.48 explain that, an Australian diet American diet is about 35 00:15:51.51\00:15:55.45 percent fat. Now this is less than 10 percent so it's a very 00:15:55.48\00:15:58.99 strict diet. Also he didn't allow them any cholesterol to 00:15:59.02\00:16:02.56 speak of. So that means it was basically a plant based diet. 00:16:02.59\00:16:06.70 Lots of fiber. And then he followed them up for one year 00:16:06.73\00:16:11.23 and he noticed that on this program 25 percent drop in 00:16:11.27\00:16:16.10 cholesterol. Moreover he found that American Heart Association 00:16:16.14\00:16:21.24 diet only lowered the cholesterol by five percent. 00:16:21.28\00:16:24.15 And then he looked at the very sophisticated technologies, 00:16:24.18\00:16:28.88 space age technologies, when he looked at the coronary arteries 00:16:28.92\00:16:32.32 he began to realize that 82 percent of the plaques, those 00:16:32.35\00:16:39.19 pimples on the inside of the arteries wall, that 82 percent 00:16:39.23\00:16:44.73 had begun to melt down. The disease reversal was taking 00:16:44.77\00:16:49.20 place. The melting down was beginning while on the control 00:16:49.24\00:16:53.48 group, the American Heart Association, he found that 53 00:16:53.51\00:16:56.28 percent of the plaques had progressed. To reverse the 00:16:56.31\00:17:01.18 disease we've got to go further you have to go further 00:17:01.22\00:17:05.09 towards a diet that 00:17:06.25\00:17:07.62 is very lean and basically free of cholesterol. And you know the 00:17:07.66\00:17:13.90 results speak for themselves. 00:17:13.93\00:17:15.26 So this is now a major breakthrough. It's been 00:17:15.30\00:17:19.23 demonstrated not just in monkeys but also in humans. 00:17:19.27\00:17:22.80 Right. We're speaking of everything. Because we thought 00:17:22.84\00:17:25.27 that bypass surgery was the answer, placing stents was the 00:17:25.31\00:17:27.91 answer and now something as simple as a dietary change can 00:17:27.94\00:17:31.31 produce these changes. It was big news. Then of course shortly 00:17:31.35\00:17:36.52 thereafter the reports came out from the Cleveland Clinic, a 00:17:36.55\00:17:39.69 famous heart center in America and their Dr. Esselstyn 00:17:39.72\00:17:44.63 demonstrated that he was able to take patients that were the 00:17:44.66\00:17:47.86 walking dead as he called them. They already had bypass and 00:17:47.90\00:17:51.00 everything else and nothing could be done for them anymore. 00:17:51.03\00:17:53.07 And he placed them on a very simple diet similar to what 00:17:53.10\00:17:55.70 Ornish had done, basically a vegetarian diet, foods as grown, 00:17:55.74\00:18:00.01 high in fiber, you know lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains 00:18:00.04\00:18:05.45 and legumes and he brought their cholesterols down to less than 00:18:05.48\00:18:12.15 4.0 and over the next five years the results were there. He 00:18:12.19\00:18:16.93 followed them up for another seven years, that's 12 years' 00:18:16.96\00:18:20.03 results. Great, great success. And now he wrote a book 00:18:20.06\00:18:23.70 chronicling 20 years of these patients, many of whom had been 00:18:23.73\00:18:31.07 given five, six months to live. And all of them but four are 00:18:31.11\00:18:34.84 alive and doing well. And when you make some of these simple 00:18:34.88\00:18:39.05 lifestyle changes as we do in the CHIP program, here's what 00:18:39.08\00:18:42.35 can happen to people. And here's now something that I want to 00:18:42.38\00:18:46.25 show you that we picked up the other day from Mark McNeill, a 00:18:46.29\00:18:50.46 graduate of CHIP, Complete Health Improvement Program. Take 00:18:50.49\00:18:53.93 a look. He's following a very simple diet. Just take a look. 00:18:53.96\00:18:56.30 I'm so glad, life is just great. I've felt well and then bang 00:18:56.33\00:19:03.71 then I was told you've got six arteries that are blocked and 00:19:03.74\00:19:07.48 99 percent blocked. And so that was a bit of a surprise. I had 00:19:07.51\00:19:12.85 to have five bypasses. After that after getting out of the 00:19:12.88\00:19:18.19 operation what had 00:19:18.55\00:19:20.62 happened there I went back onto my normal diet which I thought 00:19:20.66\00:19:25.46 was great. I had a good diet I thought. Went back and had blood 00:19:25.49\00:19:31.00 tests and I was surprised. My cholesterol was raised, blood 00:19:31.03\00:19:36.34 pressure was up and at that point I was introduced to the 00:19:36.37\00:19:41.44 CHIP program. I went onto it immediately, straight away. 00:19:41.48\00:19:46.01 I had to do that. Within two months of going on the CHIP 00:19:46.05\00:19:49.68 program my cholesterol was half, blood pressure was down. In fact 00:19:49.72\00:19:56.36 I had to lower my blood pressure pills because I was getting 00:19:56.39\00:19:59.36 dizzy. I had to_. And then that allowed me now to get back 00:19:59.39\00:20:04.77 into things I loved. Two weeks ago I got back on the bike. 00:20:04.80\00:20:07.34 One thing I really noticed I used to bike before 00:20:07.37\00:20:11.37 I was always out of breath. 00:20:11.41\00:20:12.84 I went out two weeks ago. I hit the hills. I didn't even get a 00:20:12.87\00:20:16.48 sweat. I was doing some marvelous riding. You know, I 00:20:16.51\00:20:19.25 was getting back on the bike, biking with my friends, living 00:20:19.28\00:20:22.58 life to the full. And my life was just beginning again. 00:20:22.62\00:20:27.16 You know, when I see that, that's payday for me. I mean it 00:20:36.23\00:20:39.87 makes me feel so good that we can do something about a disease 00:20:39.90\00:20:42.94 that is so devastating. 00:20:42.97\00:20:44.31 So a simple, natural diet is really a blessing. 00:20:44.34\00:20:48.58 The evidence is piling up strongly every day. We are what 00:20:48.61\00:20:52.88 we eat. And the former surgeon general, Dr. Koop, said it very 00:20:52.91\00:20:57.62 well. He said, no prescription is more valuable than knowledge 00:20:57.65\00:21:02.32 when it comes to health and disease. People, you are what 00:21:02.36\00:21:06.23 you eat. Make better choices because you can prevent this 00:21:06.26\00:21:10.60 disease and you probably can also reverse this disease. 00:21:10.63\00:21:14.14 Dr. Hans, this is information we need. There shall be no more death nor sorrow nor 00:24:34.04\00:24:37.27 crying. There shall be no more pain for the former things have 00:24:37.31\00:24:41.74 passed away. 00:24:41.78\00:24:44.25 ¤ ¤ 00:24:44.28\00:25:06.03 Our story begins with the destructions of the sacred city 00:25:06.07\00:25:10.41 of Jerusalem during a series of fierce battles that started in 00:25:10.44\00:25:14.78 605 B.C., just over 2600 years ago. The greatest empire of the 00:25:14.81\00:25:21.82 ancient world, Babylon, attacked and plundered the nation of 00:25:21.85\00:25:26.29 Judah taking many of the people captive. Among the captives were 00:25:26.32\00:25:32.03 four gifted young Jewish men. They were brought into the 00:25:32.06\00:25:35.73 luxurious palace of King Nebuchadnezzar where they were 00:25:35.76\00:25:39.13 to serve at the king's whim. The whole idea was to reprogram 00:25:39.17\00:25:44.01 these young men and give them a totally new world view, one 00:25:44.04\00:25:48.78 based on the values and principles of Babylon. Before 00:25:48.81\00:25:53.11 long the young captives faced a test. And it arose over the 00:25:53.15\00:25:57.49 issue of food. You see, although they were captives they were 00:25:57.52\00:26:01.89 being treated like royalty. They could even eat the king's 00:26:01.92\00:26:05.26 special food and sit at his table, but to do so meant to be 00:26:05.29\00:26:11.03 disobedient to the God of heaven God had given instructions 00:26:11.07\00:26:15.34 regarding what food was best for people to eat. These young men 00:26:15.37\00:26:21.24 had been taught about the importance of eating the right 00:26:21.28\00:26:24.15 food that was best for them and avoiding food that was harmful 00:26:24.18\00:26:27.98 to their health. But now they faced a real dilemma. To fail to 00:26:28.02\00:26:34.82 eat at the king's table meant to be disobedient to the king of 00:26:34.86\00:26:39.03 Babylon who was treating them so favorably. They had to make a 00:26:39.06\00:26:43.97 difficult decision. Who would they obey, God or the king? 00:26:44.00\00:26:49.64 Well, Daniel and his friends didn't hesitate in making a 00:26:49.67\00:26:54.08 decision, an important decision. We read about it in Daniel 00:26:54.11\00:26:58.81 chapter one and verse eight: 00:26:58.85\00:27:01.08 There was no question in Daniel's mind. Loyalty to God 00:27:10.99\00:27:15.80 was more important than loyalty to the king. He resolved that he 00:27:15.83\00:27:21.44 would be faithful to the Lord of heaven and earth. 00:27:21.47\00:27:23.97 He would honor his God 00:27:24.01\00:27:25.71 in all the details of life, even in what he ate and drank. So 00:27:25.74\00:27:31.31 begins the book of Daniel, which right away, sets a theme that 00:27:31.35\00:27:36.08 would be found throughout the entire book, obedience to God 00:27:36.12\00:27:39.82 versus obedience to man. And it presents us with a challenge. 00:27:39.85\00:27:45.69 Do we do what is right and what we believe is right or do we go 00:27:45.73\00:27:50.30 with the majority to be popular to be liked and maybe even to 00:27:50.33\00:27:54.67 advance our career? The test described in chapter one seemed 00:27:54.70\00:27:59.54 very mild in comparison to the much greater test to come later 00:27:59.57\00:28:04.01 in the book. But the lesson of chapter one is that only those 00:28:04.05\00:28:08.18 who pass the minor test will ever pass the major test. You 00:28:08.22\00:28:14.09 see, if we cannot remain loyal to God when the test is easy, 00:28:14.12\00:28:17.73 we will never be obedient when real trouble comes. How 00:28:17.76\00:28:22.43 important then that we be faithful to God at all times. 00:28:22.46\00:28:27.50
