¤ ¤ 00:00:01.90\00:00:25.02 Three, two, one, zero liftoff. 00:00:25.05\00:00:30.43 No one on planet earth was there to see humanities greatest 00:00:30.46\00:00:33.53 achievement. That's because it didn't happen on planet earth. 00:00:33.56\00:00:38.23 It happened on the moon. It was only seen through grainey 00:00:38.27\00:00:42.34 television images beamed across the distance of almost 400,000 00:00:42.37\00:00:47.24 kilometers when Neil Armstrong planted the first human step on 00:00:47.28\00:00:52.25 on the lunar surface. But there was something that was kept 00:00:52.28\00:00:57.05 secret about the moon landing. The Apollo moon missions carried 00:00:57.09\00:01:01.56 a secret cargo and NASA wasn't keen to make it publically known 00:01:01.59\00:01:06.90 What was it? And why is it so important that you should know 00:01:06.93\00:01:12.17 about it. Well together let's unravel the mystery of the book 00:01:12.20\00:01:18.87 that went to the moon. 00:01:18.91\00:01:21.14 ¤ ¤ 00:01:21.18\00:01:46.97 We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon. 00:01:47.00\00:01:53.21 We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other 00:01:53.24\00:01:59.11 things, not because they are easy but because they are hard. 00:01:59.15\00:02:02.48 On the 25th of May 1961 when President John F. Kennedy 00:02:02.52\00:02:08.89 announced America's goal of going to the moon the 00:02:08.92\00:02:12.83 achievement seemed almost unimaginable. It came only 20 00:02:12.86\00:02:17.70 days after Allen Shepherd had become the first American in 00:02:17.73\00:02:22.80 space. If that mission had failed Kennedy would never have 00:02:22.84\00:02:26.41 announced the goal of putting an American on the moon. That's 00:02:26.44\00:02:30.81 how tenuous and dangerous the whole thing was. But just eight 00:02:30.85\00:02:35.58 years later on the 19th of July 1969 Apollo 11 entered the orbit 00:02:35.62\00:02:42.32 of the moon. Inside were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, 00:02:42.36\00:02:47.80 and Edward "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr. The next day on the 20th of 00:02:47.83\00:02:52.47 July the lunar module Eagle separated from Apollo descending 00:02:52.50\00:02:58.37 with Armstrong and Aldrin inside Back at the mission control 00:02:58.41\00:03:04.18 center the support crew waited breathlessly while Armstrong 00:03:04.21\00:03:07.62 carefully piloted the lunar module down toward the lunar 00:03:07.65\00:03:12.42 surface. Eventually they heard Armstrong's call sign come 00:03:12.45\00:03:17.69 through loud and clear. 00:03:17.73\00:03:23.83 Two and a half hours after landing before preparing 00:03:23.87\00:03:28.14 for Armstrong's walk on the moon Buzz Aldrin radioed earth and 00:03:28.17\00:03:33.91 asked for a few moments of silence for each person 00:03:33.94\00:03:38.41 listening to give thanks in his own individual way. Then Aldrin 00:03:38.45\00:03:47.69 privately took communion using a chalice and wine he had 00:03:47.72\00:03:51.79 brought and then he read a passage from the Bible which 00:03:51.83\00:03:54.90 he also had brought with him on a piece of paper. Here's the 00:03:54.93\00:03:58.23 passage from John chapter 15 and verse 5: 00:03:58.27\00:04:04.04 The reason why Aldrin had been vague in asking people to give 00:04:16.08\00:04:20.49 thanks was because at that time NASA was fighting a law suit 00:04:20.52\00:04:24.76 brought by an atheist called Madalyn Murry O'Hair who had 00:04:24.79\00:04:29.46 objected to previous Apollo astronauts reading from the 00:04:29.50\00:04:32.93 Bible. And that's also why NASA didn't make any public 00:04:32.97\00:04:36.97 announcements about this or about the book that went to the 00:04:37.01\00:04:42.84 moon because here was the greatest achievement of secular 00:04:42.88\00:04:44.78 humanity and yet many of these astronauts kept insisting on 00:04:44.81\00:04:49.82 putting God right at the heart of the moon mission. Early the 00:04:49.85\00:04:55.12 next morning Neil Armstrong opened the hatch and began his 00:04:55.16\00:04:59.59 descent to the lunar surface. While still on the ladder 00:04:59.63\00:05:04.63 Armstrong uncovered a plaque that said: 00:05:04.67\00:05:09.27 Here men from the planet earth first set foot upon the moon 00:05:09.30\00:05:12.27 July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind. 00:05:12.31\00:05:19.28 Then Armstrong stepped off Eagle's footpad and said those 00:05:19.31\00:05:26.25 famous words: 00:05:26.29\00:05:27.72 Even today that step in 1969 represents for me the greatest 00:05:36.80\00:05:44.11 achievement of humanity. It represents not only a scientific 00:05:44.14\00:05:49.64 triumph, but a triumph of the ingenuity and the will of 00:05:49.68\00:05:52.31 mankind and indeed it was. The astronauts involved in the moon 00:05:52.35\00:05:57.85 program were very special people Initially to become an astronaut 00:05:57.89\00:06:04.46 experience in flying high performance aircraft was as 00:06:04.49\00:06:08.96 equally important as academic qualifications. However by 1964 00:06:09.00\00:06:14.40 applications were invited on the basis of superior academic 00:06:14.44\00:06:19.47 qualifications alone. The minimum requirements were a 00:06:19.51\00:06:25.51 doctorate or equivalent in the areas of natural sciences, 00:06:25.55\00:06:29.52 medicine or engineering. Applications were evaluated by 00:06:29.55\00:06:35.26 the National Academy of Sciences in Washington. These were among 00:06:35.29\00:06:39.39 the best and brightest that America had to offer. But what 00:06:39.43\00:06:44.73 most people don't recognize today is that the moon landing 00:06:44.77\00:06:48.57 and the Apollo space program as a whole was fueled not simply 00:06:48.60\00:06:53.68 by rocket fuel but faith. It's popular today among atheists 00:06:53.71\00:06:59.98 to discredit God and faith as forces that have held back the 00:07:00.02\00:07:04.02 progress of humanity but that has never been the case and here 00:07:04.05\00:07:09.46 is what is significant. Many of those involved in the space 00:07:09.49\00:07:14.16 program were committed Christians or deeply spiritual 00:07:14.20\00:07:18.17 people and especially so the astronauts. Frank Borman, the 00:07:18.20\00:07:24.04 commander of the first space crew to travel beyond the 00:07:24.07\00:07:26.64 earth orbit looked down on the earth from a quarter of a 00:07:26.68\00:07:29.61 quarter of a million miles in space and he radioed back a 00:07:29.64\00:07:33.72 message reading the very first words of the Bible from Genesis 00:07:33.75\00:07:37.79 chapter one: 00:07:37.82\00:07:39.15 Later on Borman explained why he did it. He said: 00:07:43.93\00:07:48.80 Edgar Mitchell was the sixth man on the moon and although he 00:08:01.94\00:08:05.58 wasn't a Christian in the traditional sense, he said that 00:08:05.61\00:08:09.25 as a result of his experience then he came to believe that God 00:08:09.28\00:08:13.42 was real. James Irwin, who walked on the moon in 1971 00:08:13.46\00:08:18.56 described the lunar mission as a revelation. He said: 00:08:18.59\00:08:22.86 These men who were the best of the best that the USA could 00:08:28.84\00:08:36.48 offer were deeply spiritual. Many of these were committed 00:08:36.51\00:08:40.68 Christians who loved the Bible. That's why the book that went 00:08:40.72\00:08:44.79 to the moon wasn't an encyclopedia or a scientific 00:08:44.82\00:08:48.69 text book. It was the Bible. Actually the Bible didn't make 00:08:48.72\00:08:53.90 it to the moon in the form of one verse on a scrap of paper 00:08:53.93\00:08:57.53 on Apollo 11, but it really did go to the moon. And it's that 00:08:57.57\00:09:03.77 fascinating story that I want to share with you. In fact, the 00:09:03.81\00:09:09.54 whole Bible has actually been to the moon many times, but not in 00:09:09.58\00:09:14.18 the form that you and I know it with covers and paper and pages. 00:09:14.22\00:09:18.22 It's been to the moon in the form of microfilm or microfiche. 00:09:18.25\00:09:23.93 Five hundred and twelve tiny copies of the Bible in Microfilm 00:09:23.96\00:09:28.26 were made by a group called the Apollo _. This group was 00:09:28.30\00:09:34.40 led by a Texas minister named John Stout who doubled as a 00:09:34.44\00:09:38.24 NASA scientist. There's one of them here in the museum of the 00:09:38.27\00:09:43.14 Bible in Washington D.C. It's one of the newest and most 00:09:43.18\00:09:47.88 technologically advanced museums in the world. 00:09:47.92\00:09:50.05 It showcases many rare 00:09:50.09\00:09:52.15 and _ artifacts, both ancient and modern, including 00:09:52.19\00:09:57.06 one of the Lunar Bibles. And here it is, one of the original 00:09:57.09\00:10:00.96 Bibles that went to the moon. It's one of only 12 intact lunar 00:10:01.00\00:10:06.63 Bibles that made the round trip journey. The remainder were 00:10:06.67\00:10:10.51 divided and distributed to various dignitaries. The entire 00:10:10.54\00:10:15.38 1245 pages of the King James Version of the Bible were 00:10:15.41\00:10:21.78 faithfully reproduced into these cubes of microfilm, just 4.1 cm 00:10:21.82\00:10:28.76 square. The very first manned mission of the United States 00:10:28.79\00:10:35.86 Apollo program was Apollo 1. Apollo 1 never got off the 00:10:35.90\00:10:42.17 ground. During the final testing a cabin fire on the 27th of 00:10:42.20\00:10:46.17 January 1967 killed it's three crew members. Among them was 00:10:46.21\00:10:51.75 Ed White who'd had a dream to take a Bible to the surface of 00:10:51.78\00:10:56.12 the moon. Bibles were first officially approved to be 00:10:56.15\00:11:00.49 carried in the lunar module for Apollo 12, the second landing 00:11:00.52\00:11:05.46 mission and here it is. The command module is on display 00:11:05.49\00:11:09.26 here at the Virginia Air and Space Center, but by mistake 00:11:09.30\00:11:13.64 the Bibles were packed into this command module which only 00:11:13.67\00:11:17.67 orbited the moon. So they never made it down to the lunar 00:11:17.71\00:11:23.11 surface. But John Stout wasn't to be detered. He tried again 00:11:23.14\00:11:28.22 This time he arranged for them to fly on Apollo 13 and this 00:11:28.25\00:11:33.25 time they were packed correctly in the landing module. But 00:11:33.29\00:11:37.66 you'll remember that Apollo 13 didn't go to the moon. It's been 00:11:37.69\00:11:41.30 turned into several movies. About five-and-a-half hours 00:11:41.33\00:11:45.17 after entering moon orbit a faulty oxygen tank exploded 00:11:45.20\00:11:49.14 causing a loss of oxygen and electrical power. There was a 00:11:49.17\00:11:54.24 big chance that the astronauts would die. The moon landing was 00:11:54.28\00:11:59.65 aborted and by nothing short of the miracle the crew were able 00:11:59.68\00:12:03.49 to return safely to earth. However on the third attempt 00:12:03.52\00:12:08.32 the Bible actually did make it to the moon. Astronaut Edgar 00:12:08.36\00:12:14.06 Mitchell carried 100 copies of the microfilm Bible in his 00:12:14.10\00:12:19.03 personal kit on the Apollo 14 lunar module and that's how the 00:12:19.07\00:12:23.30 Bible finally made it to the moon on the 5th of February 1971 00:12:23.34\00:12:29.01 The story of the microfilm Bible has been shrouded in mystery. 00:12:29.04\00:12:36.38 Part of the reason is because NASA logged them as small 00:12:36.42\00:12:39.79 microfilm packets rather than Bibles. The other part of the 00:12:39.82\00:12:44.93 reason is that although these explorers were men of science 00:12:44.96\00:12:48.16 they were also men of faith but it was difficult for NASA to 00:12:48.20\00:12:55.44 discuss their religous beliefs in an increasingly secular 00:12:55.47\00:12:58.04 society. There was also a very practical reason why they 00:12:58.07\00:13:02.38 couldn't just take a standard Bible with them into space. 00:13:02.41\00:13:06.58 Because there were severe space and weight restrictions on what 00:13:06.61\00:13:09.95 the astronauts could carry. Each of the astronauts were limited 00:13:09.98\00:13:14.72 to only 18 ounces or half a kilo of personal effects that they 00:13:14.76\00:13:19.96 could take in their personal kits. So the question must be 00:13:20.00\00:13:24.13 asked, What's so important about this book the Bible that many of 00:13:24.17\00:13:29.60 these heroic men of science struggled so valiantly to take 00:13:29.64\00:13:34.18 it with them to the moon. Why were they so passionate about 00:13:34.21\00:13:39.88 associating it with humanity's greatest achievement? Well those 00:13:39.91\00:13:44.82 first people who traveled to the moon knew that their achievement 00:13:44.85\00:13:49.39 was the highest that a human being had ever been, the 00:13:49.42\00:13:54.33 pinnacle of human civilization and the culmination of all 00:13:54.36\00:13:59.73 knowledge and science to that time. And many of the Apollo 00:13:59.77\00:14:03.81 astronauts also knew something that our society has likely lost 00:14:03.84\00:14:08.98 and that is that it's the principles and teachings of the 00:14:09.01\00:14:13.25 Bible that are responsible for what is noblest and best in 00:14:13.28\00:14:17.92 Western civilization. Now this may seem strange to an average 00:14:17.95\00:14:22.79 person who never thinks about these sorts of things. Yet it's 00:14:22.82\00:14:26.63 true. There's a popular myth that the Bible had little or no 00:14:26.66\00:14:31.23 impact on western civilization. But that's just a myth. Some 00:14:31.27\00:14:36.00 people like to bring up the topic of science and set it up 00:14:36.04\00:14:39.07 against Christianity as if Christian faith were the arch 00:14:39.11\00:14:43.21 enemy of scientific progress. But that's simply not true 00:14:43.24\00:14:47.85 either. Everyone knows that all of the first modern scientists 00:14:47.88\00:14:53.15 were explicitly motivated by their Christian faith to 00:14:53.19\00:14:57.66 establish foundations of modern science. For example Isaac 00:14:57.69\00:15:02.20 Newton who lived from 1642 to 1727 is considered the greatest 00:15:02.23\00:15:06.87 scientist of his age, perhaps of all time. He is renowned for his 00:15:06.90\00:15:12.01 theories of motion and gravitation which he believed 00:15:12.04\00:15:15.58 were fully consistent with biblical teaching. For Newton to 00:15:15.61\00:15:21.92 understand nature was to understand God. The structure 00:15:21.95\00:15:25.09 of the physical universe he maintained revealed an all 00:15:25.12\00:15:29.16 powerful God who created the world and intervened to keep it 00:15:29.19\00:15:35.33 on track. Newton once wrote that he intended his scientific 00:15:35.36\00:15:40.44 discoveries and achievements to support the biblical concept of 00:15:40.47\00:15:44.04 God as an intelligent and all powerful being. So, yes, 00:15:44.07\00:15:50.45 everyone knows that the early modern scientists believed in 00:15:50.48\00:15:53.72 God and were motivated by their Christian faith to establish 00:15:53.75\00:15:57.79 foundations for modern science. But not everyone knows that 00:15:57.82\00:16:02.52 it was only the Judeo-Christian world view that allowed science 00:16:02.56\00:16:06.76 to flourish. This was because it was the Christian world view 00:16:06.80\00:16:11.63 that introduced the concept of evidence. This led to the idea 00:16:11.67\00:16:15.27 of the experiment which became the foundation of modern science 00:16:15.30\00:16:21.48 Even from the earliest centuries of Christianity it has been the 00:16:21.51\00:16:25.28 Bible that has promoted literacy more than any other factor in 00:16:25.31\00:16:29.78 history and it has continued right through to our own day 00:16:29.82\00:16:33.86 being at the heart of the principles of universal 00:16:33.89\00:16:38.99 education which we all take for granted today. Even the idea of 00:16:39.03\00:16:42.30 the university itself is essentially a Christian idea. 00:16:42.33\00:16:46.90 And it wasn't just the idea of the university but the idea of 00:16:46.94\00:16:52.24 the hospital itself was created and shaped by the teachings of 00:16:52.27\00:16:56.44 the Bible. There were no hospitals anywhere in the world 00:16:56.48\00:16:59.85 before the impact of the Bible's teaching. The hospital is a 00:16:59.88\00:17:05.29 uniquely Christian idea. It's because after Jesus returned to 00:17:05.32\00:17:10.29 heaven his followers immulated his example and dedicated 00:17:10.33\00:17:14.63 themselves to healing and to creating places and ways to care 00:17:14.66\00:17:18.90 for the sick. It was Christian monastic tradition that 00:17:18.93\00:17:23.54 blossomed into hospitals and indeed the practice of modern 00:17:23.57\00:17:27.48 medicine as we know it. This brings us to the whole social 00:17:27.51\00:17:32.35 structure of our western civilization which is based on 00:17:32.38\00:17:35.68 the notions of human dignity, equality and the inalienable 00:17:35.72\00:17:40.39 right of every person. In fact these are key and unique 00:17:40.42\00:17:46.19 contributions of the Bible to our modern world and it was 00:17:46.23\00:17:49.56 Christian thinkers and philosophers who developed and 00:17:49.60\00:17:53.34 nurtured the first ideas about human rights and the equality of 00:17:53.37\00:17:58.14 every person. And these ideas were not just developed by 00:17:58.17\00:18:03.11 Christians but also for specifically Christian reasons. 00:18:03.14\00:18:08.05 The idea of selfless caring for others is also an important 00:18:08.08\00:18:13.99 contribution that western culture has made to the world 00:18:14.02\00:18:15.89 because of the teachings of the Bible. It was Christians who 00:18:15.92\00:18:22.23 started the first orphanages and charities of different kinds, 00:18:22.26\00:18:25.27 institutions that had never existed before to look after 00:18:25.30\00:18:30.17 those who couldn't look after themselves. And they did it 00:18:30.21\00:18:34.04 because the Bible taught not only that we should love others 00:18:34.08\00:18:37.41 as outselves but that we should also love those who could not 00:18:37.45\00:18:42.32 return that love and even our enemies. The notion of the 00:18:42.35\00:18:46.65 charity, of selfless charity for no reward, is itself a uniquely 00:18:46.69\00:18:52.46 Christian idea. So because of its contributions to western 00:18:52.49\00:18:57.10 culture the Bible is a very special book. But it's none of 00:18:57.13\00:19:01.77 these things that make the Bible the most unique book in the 00:19:01.80\00:19:06.31 world, it wasn't these things that led the Apollo astronauts 00:19:06.34\00:19:09.14 to choose to take the Bible with them when they had to decide 00:19:09.18\00:19:12.78 what to take on their epoch making journey. What makes the 00:19:12.81\00:19:17.39 Bible most unique is its divine power to transform lives. The 00:19:17.42\00:19:23.69 Bible itself claims to have a living power and to be a prime 00:19:23.73\00:19:28.36 means by which God communicates and interacts with humanity. 00:19:28.40\00:19:34.40 Once you've experienced the power of God's word in your life 00:19:34.44\00:19:38.04 it's something that no one can deny. Many of the astronauts of 00:19:38.07\00:19:44.11 the Apollo program had experienced this for themselves. 00:19:44.15\00:19:47.82 That's why they treasured the Bible above all books. The Bible 00:19:47.85\00:19:53.02 doesn't transform lives because it's full of the greatest 00:19:53.05\00:19:56.06 teachings and wisdom in all the world or _. It transforms 00:19:56.09\00:20:01.96 lives because it's a book that comes from God for humanity and 00:20:02.00\00:20:07.10 it's full of his power. Some people like to talk about 00:20:07.14\00:20:11.47 miracles but the greatest miracle that God performs on a 00:20:11.51\00:20:14.74 regular basis is transforming lives, changing people through 00:20:14.78\00:20:19.95 the Bible. Every year untold millions of lives are rescued 00:20:19.98\00:20:25.59 from things such a substance abuse, destructive habits and 00:20:25.62\00:20:29.79 emotional hurts in addition to character flaws such as lying, 00:20:29.82\00:20:34.73 stealing, cheating, aggression and anger. Sometimes these life 00:20:34.76\00:20:40.74 changes are dramatic and quick. Sometimes they take place over 00:20:40.77\00:20:45.01 many years. The transformations that these people experienced 00:20:45.04\00:20:49.41 often had one thing in common, the Bible, also called the word 00:20:49.44\00:20:55.55 of God has usually played a central role. It's one of God's 00:20:55.58\00:20:59.85 primary tools for changing lives for the better. The Bible gives 00:20:59.89\00:21:05.06 us the words that come from the mind and heart of the creator. 00:21:05.09\00:21:09.53 These words carry a power that is unparalleled by any other 00:21:09.56\00:21:14.50 written word. Here's what the Bible itself says in Hebrews 00:21:14.54\00:21:18.24 chapter 4 and verse 12: 00:21:18.27\00:21:20.78 When you open your heart to reading, learning and studying 00:21:37.13\00:21:41.86 the Bible you'll begin to see God like never before. You'll 00:21:41.90\00:21:47.04 understand your true condition, sinful before a holy God and 00:21:47.07\00:21:52.54 you'll understand his free gift of forgiveness through the death 00:21:52.57\00:21:55.88 of Jesus on the cross. You'll begin to grasp the power of 00:21:55.91\00:22:00.42 God's Spirit that will enable you to turn from activities that 00:22:00.45\00:22:04.75 are harmful to you and enjoy life the way it was meant to be 00:22:04.79\00:22:08.69 enjoyed, full of happiness and peace and you'll also see a 00:22:08.72\00:22:14.63 miraculous change begin to take place in your life. When we look 00:22:14.66\00:22:18.90 through history we can see plenty of examples of people who 00:22:18.93\00:22:22.80 read the Bible a lot but to no avail and it's true that some 00:22:22.84\00:22:28.44 Christians have used wrong understandings of the Bible to 00:22:28.48\00:22:32.31 persecute and harm others. So what's the secret to 00:22:32.35\00:22:36.18 understanding the Bible the way that God intends. You have to 00:22:36.22\00:22:41.56 remember that the Bible is the only book whose author has 00:22:41.59\00:22:45.99 promised to be beside you and help you understand it every 00:22:46.03\00:22:49.26 time you read it. The best way to understand the Bible is to 00:22:49.30\00:22:54.14 make sure that you have a relationship with Jesus Christ 00:22:54.17\00:22:56.67 because he's promised that when you do that through his Spirit 00:22:56.71\00:23:00.88 he will personally teach you. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit 00:23:00.91\00:23:06.78 will guide us into all truth and that's how you unlock the power 00:23:06.82\00:23:11.35 of the Bible for your life. Here's what Jesus said in 00:23:11.39\00:23:15.09 John chapter 16 and verse 13: 00:23:15.12\00:23:17.79 ... 00:23:17.83\00:23:33.14 The astronauts of the Apollo space program were the best and 00:23:33.17\00:23:40.52 the brightest that the United States had to offer. Many of 00:23:40.55\00:23:44.05 them treasured the Bible. They treasured it so much that they 00:23:44.09\00:23:48.86 made sure that it was part of humanity's greatest achievement, 00:23:48.89\00:23:52.99 reaching the moon itself. Now I don't know what you're hoping 00:23:53.03\00:23:57.73 to achieve in life or that you're simply struggling with 00:23:57.77\00:24:01.57 life itself. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. 00:25:00.36\00:25:06.03 As our society become more secular and moves away from God 00:25:06.07\00:25:14.74 fewer and fewer people appreciate the importance of 00:25:14.78\00:25:17.81 the Bible in their lives. It's not that they don't need it. 00:25:17.85\00:25:21.02 It's simply that they don't know what the Bible teaches or 00:25:21.05\00:25:26.15 understand its power.
