Most people remember Abraham Lincoln as the 00:00:23.89\00:00:27.16 American President who ended slavery in the United States. 00:00:27.19\00:00:30.46 What many don't know is that Lincoln suffered from 00:00:30.49\00:00:34.20 profound melancholy, or what today would be called 00:00:34.23\00:00:37.77 major depression He was prone to mood swings, breakdowns, 00:00:37.80\00:00:42.90 and feelings of worthlessness. 00:00:42.94\00:00:44.91 However he didn't allow depression to keep him down. 00:00:44.94\00:00:48.64 In fact he employed certain strategies in order to alleviate 00:00:48.68\00:00:53.11 his sadness. He often told jokes and stories to improve 00:00:53.15\00:00:57.42 his mood and found an outlet for his feelings in reading 00:00:57.45\00:01:01.32 reciting and composing poetry. 00:01:01.36\00:01:03.63 In this program called Dealing With Depression, 00:01:03.66\00:01:07.56 our guest Dr. Neil Nedley will suggest many practical things 00:01:07.60\00:01:12.03 we can do to improve our moods and make us 00:01:12.07\00:01:15.00 healthier and happier. 00:01:15.04\00:01:17.07 I once heard a story about a boy named Winston 00:01:27.18\00:01:30.52 who faced a tremendous amount of physical and mental 00:01:30.55\00:01:33.66 challenges. At the age of three Winston fell off a donkey 00:01:33.69\00:01:38.29 and suffered a brain concussion, at eleven he developed pneumonia 00:01:38.33\00:01:42.76 and struggled for his life. When he was 18 he fell nearly 00:01:42.80\00:01:47.94 ten meters, ruptured a kidney and the healing process took 00:01:47.97\00:01:52.17 many weeks. 00:01:52.21\00:01:53.54 Now if that wasn't enough, he also had a father who abused him 00:01:53.58\00:01:58.75 verbally, telling him he was leading an idle, useless and 00:01:58.78\00:02:02.78 unprofitable life and that he would deteriorate into a 00:02:02.82\00:02:06.99 shabby, unhappy and futile existence. 00:02:07.02\00:02:10.23 Well, he seemed to be proving his father right when he 00:02:10.26\00:02:14.50 twice failed to pass the entrance exam for the college 00:02:14.53\00:02:18.27 he wished to attend and he was severely depressed. 00:02:18.30\00:02:21.97 But depression is not the end of Winston's story, 00:02:22.00\00:02:25.77 far from it, you may have heard of him. 00:02:25.81\00:02:29.08 His name was Winston Churchill. 00:02:29.11\00:02:31.98 Winston should become Prime Minister of the UK not just once 00:02:32.01\00:02:36.45 but twice. He would also win the Nobel Prize for literature 00:02:36.48\00:02:40.92 and be the first person to be made an honorary citizen 00:02:40.96\00:02:44.79 of the United States. Winston didn't let depression 00:02:44.83\00:02:48.96 get him down and we now remember him as one of the most 00:02:49.00\00:02:53.10 successful war-time leaders during the 20th century. 00:02:53.13\00:02:56.37 Depression doesn't have to be the end of your story either 00:02:56.40\00:03:01.04 our guest Dr. Neil Nedley is here to share with us 00:03:01.08\00:03:05.05 many practical and helpful ways in which we can deal 00:03:05.08\00:03:08.38 with depression. He's a fulltime practicing physician in 00:03:08.42\00:03:12.25 Internal Medicine with emphasis in Gastroenterology, 00:03:12.29\00:03:15.89 Mental Health, and Lifestyle Medicine. 00:03:15.92\00:03:18.56 He's also the author of books such as "Depression the Way Out" 00:03:18.66\00:03:23.20 and "The Lost Art of Thinking." 00:03:23.23\00:03:25.53 Dr. Nedley, welcome to Australia and we're delighted to have you 00:03:25.57\00:03:30.04 on our program today. Thank you, glad to be here. 00:03:30.07\00:03:32.77 We're talking about depression, how big an issue is depression 00:03:32.81\00:03:38.05 in today's world? 00:03:38.08\00:03:39.41 Some have described it as an epidemic. 00:03:39.45\00:03:42.48 Actually there are each successive generation since 1915 00:03:42.52\00:03:47.32 has had more depression. And now it's so common that it's 00:03:47.36\00:03:53.09 the number one cause of disability worldwide. 00:03:53.13\00:03:57.03 People are more likely to miss work in their productive years 00:03:57.07\00:04:01.00 of their life due to this illness than any other illness 00:04:01.04\00:04:05.74 by far actually the second leading cause is way down 00:04:05.77\00:04:09.78 the list as far as numbers. And so we are dealing with 00:04:09.81\00:04:13.98 a massive issue and it's in every country in the world. 00:04:14.02\00:04:17.45 What actually is it? What is depression? 00:04:17.49\00:04:21.16 Major depression, sometimes we call it endogenous depression. 00:04:21.19\00:04:25.09 It actually requires five of nine symptoms to be diagnosed. 00:04:25.13\00:04:32.27 This is how every psychiatrist, psychologist in the world 00:04:32.30\00:04:35.44 will diagnose it, it is based on the DSM5 criteria, 00:04:35.47\00:04:39.24 the psychiatric bible. 00:04:39.27\00:04:40.78 And most people when they think of depression think of symptom 00:04:40.81\00:04:44.75 number one which is Deep Sadness. However, you would also 00:04:44.78\00:04:50.45 qualify for symptom number one if you're not sad but 00:04:50.49\00:04:53.96 if you have emptiness. You don't have to have these symptoms 00:04:53.99\00:04:57.39 all the time, just the majority of the time for two weeks 00:04:57.43\00:05:00.33 to qualify for all nine, so if you're happy one day 00:05:00.36\00:05:04.67 and sad another but sad the majority of the time for two 00:05:04.70\00:05:07.90 weeks or emptiness then that would qualify for symptom 00:05:07.94\00:05:10.61 number one. Symptom number two. Apathy-This is when you wake up 00:05:10.64\00:05:16.24 in the morning and you are not excited about the day. 00:05:16.28\00:05:18.85 You wake up and get up out of a sense of duty and 00:05:18.88\00:05:22.78 responsibility but you actually start losing interest in things 00:05:22.82\00:05:27.19 that you used to enjoy. That's distinctly abnormal particularly 00:05:27.22\00:05:31.69 if it's occurring the majority of the time 00:05:31.73\00:05:33.40 and that would be symptom number two. 00:05:33.43\00:05:34.80 Symptom number three are. Weight or Appetite Changes. 00:05:34.83\00:05:40.00 This is...The most common is weight gain...One of the reasons 00:05:40.04\00:05:44.71 why Australians and New Zealanders starting to gain 00:05:44.74\00:05:48.74 weight actually has to do with the rates of depression going 00:05:48.78\00:05:51.71 up. Many people self-medicate particularly with sugary foods 00:05:51.75\00:05:55.28 for this condition. And it does make them feel better 00:05:55.32\00:05:59.69 but of course, it complicates things. 00:05:59.72\00:06:01.52 But if the depression is sudden onset and severe, then you get 00:06:01.56\00:06:06.36 anorexia and weight loss loss of appetite. 00:06:06.39\00:06:09.60 Fourth symptom. Agitation. This is where the person is more 00:06:09.63\00:06:13.84 irritable than they used to be and sometimes they may need 00:06:13.87\00:06:16.91 to get help from others to ask them. Am I more irritable 00:06:16.94\00:06:20.98 then I used to be? A lot of times people don't recognize 00:06:21.01\00:06:23.18 this them self and a close one will say, oh yeah you're 00:06:23.21\00:06:26.88 much more irritable than you used to be. And so that would 00:06:26.92\00:06:29.45 be the fourth symptom. Fifth symptom are Sleep Disturbances. 00:06:29.48\00:06:32.89 Now with sleep disturbances it can go either way 00:06:32.95\00:06:36.09 either lack of sleep, common is insomnia, 00:06:36.12\00:06:39.76 not being able to go to sleep. Or hypersomnia where you're 00:06:39.79\00:06:43.40 sleeping too much. We have individuals that come to our 00:06:43.43\00:06:47.67 residential treatment program for depression they're sleeping 00:06:47.70\00:06:50.51 18/20 hours a day, wanting to sleep all the time, 00:06:50.54\00:06:53.98 barely awake long enough to survive to get enough food 00:06:54.01\00:06:57.35 in them. But the most common sleep disturbance is 00:06:57.38\00:07:01.08 early morning awakening. This is where the individual goes 00:07:01.12\00:07:05.55 to sleep but then they wake up too early and can't get back 00:07:05.59\00:07:08.49 to sleep and as the depression becomes more sever 00:07:08.52\00:07:11.19 the earlier they awaken. So they might start eventually awakening 00:07:11.23\00:07:15.03 one or two and they are not supposed to be up until six. 00:07:15.06\00:07:18.43 Sixth symptom is Lack of Concentration. 00:07:18.47\00:07:21.94 This is where when they're reading a book, they get to 00:07:21.97\00:07:27.08 the bottom of the page and they can't remember 00:07:27.11\00:07:28.74 what they read at the top of the page. 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.45 And they might even have trouble tracking a program such as this 00:07:30.48\00:07:34.55 by the end of it, you know, kind of losing track where 00:07:34.58\00:07:37.62 things are at. That's a significant issue and one that's 00:07:37.65\00:07:41.06 pretty common in those with depression. 00:07:41.09\00:07:42.76 Seventh as it gets more severe, Feelings of Worthlessness. 00:07:42.79\00:07:46.33 Then eighth, Morbid Thoughts. This is not just thinking 00:07:46.36\00:07:51.50 of ending your own life, or maybe homicidal thoughts 00:07:51.53\00:07:54.84 that would be morbid...but just preoccupation with death 00:07:54.87\00:07:58.04 death and symbols of death. And then the ninth symptom 00:07:58.07\00:08:01.11 is Fatigue. That's different than apathy, we talked about how 00:08:01.14\00:08:04.65 when you wake up in the morning you may not be interested 00:08:04.68\00:08:07.02 in the day. Fatigue is you don't have the energy, 00:08:07.05\00:08:09.45 you may wake up without energy or might run out of energy 00:08:09.48\00:08:13.59 too quick. And if any of those symptoms lasts the majority 00:08:13.62\00:08:17.43 of the time for two weeks, and you don't have to have 00:08:17.46\00:08:19.56 all of them, just five of nine that's major depression. 00:08:19.59\00:08:23.30 Two of nine, minor depression and it's taught to me in the 00:08:23.33\00:08:28.44 variant of normal to have one of those nine. 00:08:28.47\00:08:30.54 You mentioned that one of those first signs is sadness, 00:08:30.57\00:08:35.78 you mentioned sadness...Does that mean that everyone who is 00:08:35.81\00:08:39.58 sad or down is depressed? 00:08:39.61\00:08:42.62 Well, that's a good question and the answer to that is No 00:08:42.65\00:08:46.15 because you can be sad for a good reason and not have any 00:08:46.19\00:08:50.06 of those other symptoms. But if you are sad even after a 00:08:50.09\00:08:54.56 loss, you know, a disappointing loss in your life, 00:08:54.60\00:08:58.57 and you have five of nine symptoms, then that would be 00:08:58.60\00:09:02.70 not just sadness that would be depression. 00:09:02.74\00:09:05.61 The other flip side of that is you can have depression 00:09:05.64\00:09:09.14 and not be sad. 00:09:09.18\00:09:11.41 You might just have the apathy or you might have emptiness 00:09:11.45\00:09:15.38 or lack of concentration in those other symptoms. 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.95 And so a lot of people actually don't recognize they have 00:09:17.99\00:09:21.52 depression because they don't have necessarily the deep 00:09:21.56\00:09:24.89 sadness or the crying spells. 00:09:24.93\00:09:26.56 What are the effects of depression? 00:09:26.59\00:09:30.33 The effects are many. Depression would be bad enough if it just 00:09:30.37\00:09:35.54 did those things, but unfortunately it does a lot more 00:09:35.57\00:09:39.11 it actually Increases the Risk of Mortality significantly. 00:09:39.14\00:09:42.41 It increases the risk of stroke, increases the risk of 00:09:42.44\00:09:45.58 Heart Attack, particularly in those who have had 00:09:45.61\00:09:47.85 Coronary Artery Disease. It increases the risk of death 00:09:47.88\00:09:51.95 from cancer, it increases the risk of death from Pneumonia, 00:09:51.99\00:09:55.36 and it also increases the risk of death from Suicide. 00:09:55.39\00:09:59.16 And suicide has become far to common in our society 00:09:59.19\00:10:06.50 and the number one cause of that is depression. 00:10:06.53\00:10:09.94 We know that depression affects people right across the 00:10:09.97\00:10:15.61 spectrum. Leaders in society even champion young 00:10:15.64\00:10:21.45 sports people. Everyone is prone so there are some people 00:10:21.48\00:10:25.69 that think, hey, I've never had this, I don't understand it 00:10:25.72\00:10:28.36 I'll never get it, not true. 00:10:28.39\00:10:29.89 You have enough underlying causes and any brain will 00:10:29.92\00:10:33.36 actually begin to suffer from it. 00:10:33.40\00:10:35.13 Are there other affects, financial for example? 00:10:35.16\00:10:38.23 Yes there are, significant financial affects, 00:10:38.27\00:10:40.97 in fact studies have shown that you lose if you're in 00:10:41.00\00:10:45.07 your career years, you will loose $10,400 per year 00:10:45.11\00:10:50.95 of personal income on average than if you were not depressed. 00:10:50.98\00:10:54.95 And the toll on the family, if someone puts up with 00:10:54.98\00:11:00.26 depression their whole life and never gets it solved, 00:11:00.29\00:11:02.89 the financial toll on that 00:11:02.92\00:11:06.90 and that is very significant. 00:11:06.93\00:11:09.93 I'd say. It's great that you are hosting a program like this 00:11:09.96\00:11:12.67 because many people think they have to put up with these 00:11:12.70\00:11:15.07 symptoms for life but there is a solution and 00:11:15.10\00:11:18.31 they don't have to. And it's worth investing in the solution 00:11:18.34\00:11:22.34 because it will be the best investment they can make. 00:11:22.38\00:11:25.55 How does depression affect people regarding their 00:11:25.58\00:11:29.28 relationships, family, work relationships and so forth? 00:11:29.32\00:11:33.36 It does have significant social effects, in fact, everyone 00:11:33.39\00:11:37.23 with depression has a social complication. 00:11:37.26\00:11:40.26 In other words, it will adversely affect relationships. 00:11:40.30\00:11:45.70 There are challenges in a relationship if you are married 00:11:45.73\00:11:48.70 to someone with depression, obviously there are challenges 00:11:48.74\00:11:51.24 particularly if they are more irritable or more withdrawn 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.78 or they have the apathy, there's going to be effects on the kids, 00:11:53.81\00:11:57.38 there's going to be affects on workmates as well. 00:11:57.41\00:12:00.22 So Dr. Nedley is there hope for anyone suffering 00:12:00.25\00:12:04.22 with depression? Absolutely, tremendous hope, 00:12:04.25\00:12:07.26 there is a solution for this disease but the solution 00:12:07.29\00:12:12.59 but the solution depends on the causes that are active 00:12:12.63\00:12:16.36 in the individual. And there are many different causes of 00:12:16.40\00:12:20.74 depression, in fact, is our contribution to research. 00:12:20.77\00:12:24.21 We publish a Peer Review Article called The Nedley Hypothesis. 00:12:24.24\00:12:29.61 In the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine it goes into 00:12:29.64\00:12:33.42 over a hundred causes of depression but we can categorize 00:12:33.45\00:12:38.62 them 10 different ways and what our research shows 00:12:38.65\00:12:42.16 is once you get four categories of causes, you're going to have 00:12:42.19\00:12:46.43 depression, but out of those 10 categories, eight of them 00:12:46.46\00:12:50.67 are completely reversible. And so that means there is hope 00:12:50.70\00:12:54.77 for everyone with depression because if we can reverse 00:12:54.80\00:12:58.64 eight out of 10, even if you have two causes, 00:12:58.67\00:13:02.71 that's not enough. The brain is resilient enough to handle 00:13:02.74\00:13:05.61 two, but it can't handle four or more. 00:13:05.65\00:13:09.12 So, we need to find out what these causes are. 00:13:09.15\00:13:12.09 Yes, exactly, well one of the most commonly known causes 00:13:12.12\00:13:17.83 is the Genetic cause. But the genetic cause is not prevalent 00:13:17.86\00:13:22.33 in most people with major depression. 00:13:22.36\00:13:24.43 In a lot of people unfortunately have been told that they have 00:13:24.47\00:13:28.80 been born with this chemical imbalance and thus they have to 00:13:28.84\00:13:32.01 take these drugs for the rest of their life 00:13:32.04\00:13:34.38 They may not have a genetic hit at all, but even if they do 00:13:34.41\00:13:38.18 have a genetic hit they actually will not experience depression 00:13:38.21\00:13:42.65 if they don't have other causes on board. 00:13:42.68\00:13:44.75 But we do need to recognize genetic flaws can increase the 00:13:44.79\00:13:48.72 risk and that is one of the categories. 00:13:48.76\00:13:50.76 Second category has to do with how we're raised. 00:13:50.79\00:13:53.96 If we're raised with trauma, abuse, in an unloving, 00:13:54.00\00:14:01.00 unacceptable environment, that has actually scarred our brain 00:14:01.04\00:14:04.94 to an extent, not enough to cause depression on its own 00:14:04.97\00:14:09.48 even with genetics, but it's enough to cause two categories 00:14:09.51\00:14:13.21 hits and then you only need two more and then you will 00:14:13.25\00:14:16.79 experience depression...Now those first two are the ones 00:14:16.82\00:14:20.12 that we can't reverse. The third category of causes are lifestyle 00:14:20.16\00:14:24.73 causes. This has to do whether you are on a regular 00:14:24.76\00:14:27.96 exercise program, physical exercise and physical fitness 00:14:28.00\00:14:32.57 helps the brain. And if we are not fit, we're not only 00:14:32.60\00:14:37.41 adversely affecting our bodies, we're adversely affecting our 00:14:37.44\00:14:40.71 brains. In addition, there is another type of physical 00:14:40.74\00:14:44.25 exercise, exercising with our hands has been show to help, 00:14:44.28\00:14:47.85 not only not only treat depression but help us 00:14:47.88\00:14:50.49 resist it and so doing something repetitively like washing dishes 00:14:50.52\00:14:55.39 for 20 or 30 minutes a day can be helpful. 00:14:55.42\00:14:57.76 The other lifestyle factors have to do with getting enough 00:14:57.79\00:15:02.00 bright light, being out in the sunlight for instance helps 00:15:02.03\00:15:05.83 at least 30 minutes a day and then having fresh air. 00:15:05.87\00:15:09.07 The fourth category has to do with our sleep/wake cycles. 00:15:09.10\00:15:13.41 Our regularity and many people depression are all over the map 00:15:13.44\00:15:18.78 as far as their regularity it helps us to be on a regular 00:15:18.81\00:15:21.88 schedule. In particular, early to bed, early to rise 00:15:21.92\00:15:25.39 has another benefit with the brain. 00:15:25.42\00:15:28.16 Fifth, addiction hits. 00:15:28.19\00:15:29.96 And it doesn't matter what the addiction is, 00:15:29.99\00:15:32.26 whether it's alcohol, whether it's even caffeine which can 00:15:32.29\00:15:36.23 play a role, whether it's non- substances like pornography 00:15:36.26\00:15:41.17 or gambling, these types of things actually adversely affect 00:15:41.20\00:15:47.04 our brain chemistry. The sixth one are nutrition hits. 00:15:47.08\00:15:50.78 And this is an area Gary that a lot of people don't recognize. 00:15:50.81\00:15:55.65 What we put into our body, actually does get turned into 00:15:55.68\00:15:59.12 neuro-transmitters, it's very important for our mental health. 00:15:59.15\00:16:02.32 And many people have told me when they come for treatment 00:16:02.36\00:16:06.53 and for depression that I'm the first one that ever asked them 00:16:06.56\00:16:09.73 about what they're eating and of course that can produce some 00:16:09.76\00:16:13.64 significant benefit once we alter that in a positive way. 00:16:13.67\00:16:17.44 What should we be eating? 00:16:17.47\00:16:18.81 Well, we should be eating foods that have enough Tryptophan, 00:16:18.84\00:16:22.04 Tryptophan is the least abundant amino acid that gets turned into 00:16:22.08\00:16:25.68 Serotonin in the brain. We also should be eating foods with 00:16:25.71\00:16:29.15 enough Tyrosine and also to get the Tyrosine into the brain. 00:16:29.18\00:16:33.59 So these are sub-nutrients we call them amino acids critically 00:16:33.62\00:16:38.73 important for brain chemistry. 00:16:38.76\00:16:40.50 We also need the Omega 3 fatty acids and it's better to stay 00:16:40.53\00:16:44.83 away from some foods like the arachidonic acids. 00:16:44.87\00:16:47.70 In general, more plant-based diet helps with those types 00:16:47.74\00:16:50.87 of things, but then they're specifics as well. 00:16:50.91\00:16:53.17 So, give us some idea as to the good foods that help... 00:16:53.21\00:16:57.95 Pumpkin Seeds for Tryptophan, also gluten, what we call wheat 00:16:57.98\00:17:03.05 meat is a source of Tryptophan. Soy, Tofu are a good source 00:17:03.08\00:17:07.36 of Tryptophan. Tyrosine, it would be watermelon 00:17:07.39\00:17:11.89 actually mustard greens, Spirulina is a good source of 00:17:11.93\00:17:16.03 Tyrosine. The Omega 3 foods would be things like 00:17:16.06\00:17:19.70 Chia seeds, Flax seed, spinach 00:17:19.73\00:17:22.47 is also a good source and so, and these foods can make 00:17:22.50\00:17:25.44 a very significant difference in regards to brain chemistry. 00:17:25.47\00:17:28.91 We've gone through now to nutrition. Number 6, yeah. 00:17:28.94\00:17:32.75 Number 7 are toxic hits. And so things like mercury 00:17:32.78\00:17:36.32 One of the disadvantages of fish is that it's the most 00:17:36.35\00:17:40.49 toxic laden food in our food in our food supply and it's the 00:17:40.52\00:17:43.93 number one source of mercury and mercury can actually cause 00:17:43.96\00:17:46.73 depression, lack of concentration, drop in IQ, drop 00:17:46.76\00:17:51.67 in our ability to manage our emotions Eight hits are Social 00:17:51.70\00:17:56.00 hits. Now not everyone with depression has a social cause. 00:17:56.04\00:17:59.87 Everyone has a social complication, 00:17:59.91\00:18:02.01 we talked about that earlier but having a social cause 00:18:02.04\00:18:06.05 indication might be if you're living in an isolated social 00:18:06.08\00:18:11.09 atmosphere. That could certainly be an indication but there's 00:18:11.12\00:18:16.39 other social cause as well, significant stress, 00:18:16.42\00:18:18.33 those type of things can play its role. 00:18:18.36\00:18:20.30 Ninth are medical conditions. Like a thyroid condition, 00:18:20.33\00:18:24.23 or maybe post-traumatic head injury, that would be a medical 00:18:24.27\00:18:28.94 condition that causes inflammation of the brain. 00:18:28.97\00:18:31.41 And then the 10th would be frontal lobe. 00:18:31.44\00:18:34.64 This has to do with the front part of our brain 00:18:34.68\00:18:38.11 which is the area that is spirituality, morality, and 00:18:38.15\00:18:42.12 that will play a role. 00:18:42.15\00:18:43.59 And in the last 15 years through spec-scans and other scans- 00:18:43.62\00:18:49.69 we have found out that's one characteristic that is present 00:18:49.72\00:18:52.89 virtually in every depressed individual is a drop-in 00:18:52.93\00:18:56.53 circulation and activity of the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:18:56.56\00:18:59.53 So there's certain lifestyle issues that can help that 00:18:59.57\00:19:02.77 for instance. Changing our type of music can improve 00:19:02.80\00:19:06.31 the frontal lobe circulation. 00:19:06.34\00:19:08.18 Actually getting rid of rapid scene entertainment television, 00:19:08.21\00:19:13.72 those type of things. And then focusing in on 00:19:13.75\00:19:16.25 spiritual material, just analysis of spiritual material 00:19:16.28\00:19:20.56 like reading the Bible has been shown to be helpful. 00:19:20.59\00:19:23.12 One of the many reason why studies show that religion 00:19:23.16\00:19:27.00 and those that believe and read and analyze the Bible 00:19:27.03\00:19:30.20 will not only actually have less depression, but if they 00:19:30.23\00:19:32.90 do get it, they have more rapid recoveries. 00:19:32.93\00:19:35.77 Now, there is still a stigma surrounding depression, 00:19:35.80\00:19:40.21 what's your opinion on that? 00:19:40.24\00:19:43.31 Well, it's unfortunate but many people because of the stigma 00:19:43.35\00:19:47.75 don't get the help that they need. 00:19:47.78\00:19:49.45 So we need to get rid of the stigma, recognize that all of us 00:19:49.48\00:19:53.12 are prone to it. And, if we get the real treatments, 00:19:53.15\00:19:56.52 not just the covering treatments which may or may not work, 00:19:56.56\00:19:59.39 but get the real treatments that reverse those underlying 00:19:59.43\00:20:03.87 causes, a transformation takes place. 00:20:03.90\00:20:06.67 So, is it true that being depressed can increase the risk 00:20:06.70\00:20:11.44 of some diseases? 00:20:11.47\00:20:13.07 Absolutely. Yeah. It increases the risk of a number 00:20:13.11\00:20:19.11 of conditions but particularly asthma, chronic headaches, 00:20:19.15\00:20:26.55 migraine headaches, tension headaches, those are often 00:20:26.59\00:20:31.79 caused by depression. 00:20:31.83\00:20:33.16 We've had so many people come to our program and after 00:20:33.19\00:20:37.00 five days, we run a 10 day residential program, 00:20:37.03\00:20:39.83 after five days that they have been having for years are gone 00:20:39.87\00:20:43.81 and they are throwing away all of their headache medicine 00:20:43.84\00:20:46.64 away by the end of the program recognizing they are not going 00:20:46.68\00:20:49.34 need it anymore. And so, it not only can cause bad affects 00:20:49.38\00:20:54.55 increasing mortality, but it also can cause bad 00:20:54.58\00:20:58.49 physical affects. Increased risk of disability, physical 00:20:58.52\00:21:03.16 disabilities either whether you end up in a nursing home 00:21:03.19\00:21:05.26 or not has more to do with your mental health when you age 00:21:05.29\00:21:07.86 than your physical health. 00:21:07.90\00:21:09.30 Our brain affects really our whole system and there is a lot 00:21:09.33\00:21:12.97 of conditions that we can have even memory loss for instance 00:21:13.00\00:21:17.01 that we might think has to do with age, might actually be due 00:21:17.04\00:21:19.47 to depression, and once the depression is cleared up, 00:21:19.51\00:21:22.08 the memory can get better. So there are profound multiple 00:21:22.11\00:21:26.05 effects depending on the individual on depression 00:21:26.08\00:21:30.52 affecting them physically. 00:21:30.55\00:21:31.89 What is the most common treatment for depression? 00:21:31.92\00:21:36.56 and how effective is it? The most common treatment is 00:21:36.59\00:21:40.86 medicine, but it's not very affective, 00:21:40.90\00:21:44.70 it has limited affect. The Journal Nature Magazine 00:21:44.73\00:21:48.44 mentioned that only 13% of individuals in the best studies 00:21:48.47\00:21:54.04 can improve their function. Twenty percent will actually 00:21:54.08\00:21:58.51 have a significant lifting of their bad mood and then 30% 00:21:58.55\00:22:03.28 won't get better at all with any medicine. 00:22:03.32\00:22:07.16 They're called treatment resistance, 00:22:07.19\00:22:09.32 you can keep increasing the dose, adding medicine, 00:22:09.36\00:22:11.96 it's not really going to change it, they need other treatments 00:22:11.99\00:22:15.16 obviously besides medicines. 00:22:15.20\00:22:16.73 And then those in the middle about 50% in the middle 00:22:16.77\00:22:19.43 that improve somewhat but if you would talk to them, they still 00:22:19.47\00:22:23.77 have significant major depression. 00:22:23.81\00:22:25.64 So from what you are saying should people who are 00:22:25.67\00:22:28.34 on medication simply stop taking it? 00:22:28.38\00:22:30.88 No. Absolutely not. Before you even think about stopping 00:22:30.91\00:22:36.18 those, you have to have your depression reversed first. 00:22:36.22\00:22:40.79 And so, if you are on an anti-depressant certainly don't 00:22:40.82\00:22:44.89 stop taking them. But if you have the underlying causes 00:22:44.93\00:22:49.56 reversed, the good news is, you'll eventually be able 00:22:49.60\00:22:52.60 to stop taking them because you don't have the causes 00:22:52.63\00:22:54.80 on board. But again, only do that with your physician 00:22:54.84\00:22:58.31 weaning you off in the appropriate manner. 00:22:58.34\00:23:00.31 Dr. Nedley your book Depression the Way Out, 00:23:00.34\00:23:04.18 outlines the way out of depression. 00:23:04.21\00:23:06.75 Can you tell us what that way is? Where do we start? 00:23:06.78\00:23:09.58 Well, that's a great question and the way out is started 00:23:09.62\00:23:17.49 finding the causes. First acknowledging that you have it, 00:23:17.53\00:23:23.06 so you have to be diagnosed with it for the way out 00:23:23.10\00:23:25.23 and then secondly, finding the causes that are active in you, 00:23:25.27\00:23:30.21 and then third, getting on a comprehensive treatment regimen 00:23:30.24\00:23:34.31 and it's going to reverse those causes. 00:23:34.34\00:23:36.64 It's simpler than it sounds but unfortunately in today's world 00:23:36.68\00:23:42.72 we're not using that type of approach. 00:23:42.75\00:23:47.09 In our next program together we're going to look at the 00:23:47.12\00:23:50.89 solutions. Yeah. And I know that everybody interested 00:23:50.93\00:23:54.83 in this topic will want to know what the solutions are. 00:23:54.86\00:23:58.93 Absolutely. Well, I think we've been given some excellent tips 00:23:58.97\00:24:03.47 on how to live a happier and healthier life. 00:24:03.51\00:24:05.87 It's not enough to diagnose the cause of depression 00:24:05.91\00:24:09.54 we need to know how we can deal with it and treat is as well. 00:24:09.58\00:24:13.35 Why not make a decision right now to implement these changes 00:24:13.38\00:24:18.35 in our lives as we pray. 00:24:18.39\00:24:20.49 Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for your infinite 00:24:20.52\00:24:25.09 wisdom. We know that you care about our lives 00:24:25.13\00:24:28.56 and want us to live them to the full. 00:24:28.60\00:24:30.93 We pray that you will help us as we try to be happier 00:24:30.97\00:24:34.94 and healthier. In Jesus name, we pray, Amen. 00:24:34.97\00:24:39.87 Have you ever seen an Ostrich bury his head in the sand? 00:24:39.91\00:24:46.01 Ostriches bury their head in the sand as a defensive position 00:24:46.05\00:24:50.35 to avoid being seen by predators. 00:24:50.39\00:24:52.72 The metaphor of burning ones head in the sand 00:24:52.75\00:24:55.89 is used to imply a person trying to avoid something. 00:24:55.92\00:24:59.83 Sometimes people aren't all that different than Ostriches. 00:24:59.86\00:25:04.67 There is still some stigma around depression, 00:25:04.70\00:25:08.57 although not as much as there used to be. Consequently, 00:25:08.60\00:25:12.17 some people would prefer to bury their heads in the sand 00:25:12.21\00:25:15.34 and not acknowledge depression or ask for help but it doesn't 00:25:15.38\00:25:19.91 have to be that way 00:25:19.95\00:25:21.28 There are many practical things that you or your loved ones 00:25:21.32\00:25:24.42 can do in order to deal with depression. 00:25:24.45\00:25:27.06 Perhaps you don't have depression but know someone 00:25:27.09\00:25:30.59 who does. Either way, this information needs to be shared. 00:25:30.63\00:25:35.40 I believe this so strongly that I want you to have this book 00:25:35.43\00:25:39.60 "How To Cope With Anxiety." 00:25:39.63\00:25:41.60 This book is our gift to you and it's absolutely FREE. 00:25:41.64\00:25:45.07 There are no costs or obligations whatsoever. 00:25:45.11\00:25:48.48 So make the most of this wonderful opportunity 00:25:48.51\00:25:52.15 to receive the gift we have for you today. 00:25:52.18\00:25:54.82 Here is the information you need. 00:25:54.85\00:25:57.22 Phone or text us at 0436333555 in Australia, 00:25:57.25\00:26:03.93 or 0204222042 in New Zealand. 00:26:03.96\00:26:08.76 Or visit our website at www.tij.tv to request today's 00:26:08.80\00:26:15.50 free offer, and we'll send it to you totally free of charge 00:26:15.54\00:26:19.21 and with no obligation. 00:26:19.24\00:26:21.04 Write to us at GPO Box 274 Sydney NSW 2001, Australia. 00:26:21.08\00:26:27.55 Or PO Box 76673, Manukau 2241, New Zealand.
