¤ ¤ 00:00:01.46\00:00:28.42 Today we're exploring one of the great unknown stories of history 00:00:28.46\00:00:32.89 The man who saved England. He was the unlikeliest of heroes. 00:00:32.93\00:00:37.60 Small in stature, just 170 cm. or 5 foot 6 inches tall. 00:00:37.63\00:00:43.91 He never carried weapons and was a writer not a fighter, but he 00:00:43.94\00:00:50.18 saved England and without him the world we know today would 00:00:50.21\00:00:54.05 be a very different place. This is one of the largest squares in 00:00:54.08\00:00:58.39 the beautiful city of Paris. Its name is La Place de la Concorde, 00:00:58.42\00:01:03.53 which in French means the place of harmony. But few of the 00:01:03.56\00:01:09.13 thousands of tourists who come to visit can imagine the 00:01:09.16\00:01:13.84 unspeakable terror that was unleashed right here just over 00:01:13.87\00:01:17.51 200 years ago. Back then it was known by another name, the Place 00:01:17.54\00:01:24.35 de la Revolution. As the 18th century drew to a close, those 00:01:24.38\00:01:30.29 who ruled the nations of Europe were entirely dishonest and 00:01:30.32\00:01:34.39 unprincipled. Morality had reached a low point everywhere. 00:01:34.42\00:01:39.49 In France, this erupted into a bloody revolution in the streets 00:01:39.53\00:01:46.63 The people of France dramatically rejected all forms 00:01:46.67\00:01:50.11 of traditional, secular and religious authority. They wanted 00:01:50.14\00:01:54.94 to get rid of both the aristocracy and of all 00:01:54.98\00:01:59.75 Christian influence. A lawless and vicious mob mentality took 00:01:59.78\00:02:04.59 over and just one year in the period between 1793 and 1798 00:02:04.62\00:02:09.39 there were over 16,500 people killed in France. There was no 00:02:09.42\00:02:15.46 justice, only sham trials. It was here at this very spot that 00:02:15.50\00:02:21.50 the newly invented scientific method of execution, the 00:02:21.54\00:02:25.14 guillotine was set up. It was a popular form of entertainment 00:02:25.17\00:02:29.91 for the mob. Here the women of Paris would calmly watch while 00:02:29.94\00:02:35.62 head after head was lopped off. And the most famous heads to 00:02:35.65\00:02:40.32 roll were King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. It was 00:02:40.36\00:02:46.90 called the reign of terror. But I want to share with you the 00:02:46.93\00:02:50.03 story of what happened across the channel in England because 00:02:50.07\00:02:53.77 there a significant percentage of the population wanted to 00:02:53.80\00:02:58.31 follow France but the majority didn't and England was saved. 00:02:58.34\00:03:03.28 And it was at least in part due to one man, an unsung hero, 00:03:03.31\00:03:10.52 John Wesley. Our story starts today in a much more peaceful 00:03:10.55\00:03:14.89 place in England. 00:03:14.92\00:03:18.59 ¤ ¤ 00:03:18.63\00:03:38.55 Here in the village of Epworth north of London it was here in 00:03:38.58\00:03:42.75 the old rectory that John Wesley was born and raised. He was the 00:03:42.78\00:03:46.89 15th of 19 children born to his mother Susannah and his father 00:03:46.92\00:03:51.53 Samuel who was the rector here at St. Andrews Anglican church. 00:03:51.56\00:03:56.70 Back in those days infant mortality was high. Parents 00:03:56.73\00:04:01.70 often had to have as many children as possible in the hope 00:04:01.74\00:04:05.17 that some would survive. As it was nine of John's brothers and 00:04:05.21\00:04:10.41 sisters never survived childhood leaving 10 mouths to feed. With 00:04:10.45\00:04:16.35 so many children the main thing John's parents worried about was 00:04:16.38\00:04:20.76 how to feed the family. To make things worse, Samuel was 00:04:20.79\00:04:25.16 hopeless at managing money. In fact soon after little John 00:04:25.19\00:04:29.16 Wesley was born, his father was imprisoned for several months 00:04:29.20\00:04:33.80 because of his debts. When John Wesley was five years old the 00:04:33.84\00:04:39.67 rectory caught fire one night and burned down. Samuel managed 00:04:39.71\00:04:44.71 to get his wife and children out but in the confusion no one 00:04:44.75\00:04:49.05 noticed that little John was still asleep in bed. Samuel 00:04:49.08\00:04:54.79 tried to go back into the house to save his child but the stairs 00:04:54.82\00:04:57.19 had collapsed in the blaze. All he could do in his distress was 00:04:57.23\00:05:01.80 kneel down and commit John's soul to God. By this time John 00:05:01.83\00:05:07.97 had woken up and incredible he climbed on a chest of drawers 00:05:08.00\00:05:12.97 and opened the latch on the window. The neighbors then 00:05:13.01\00:05:15.64 quickly formed a human ladder and plucked him from the window 00:05:15.68\00:05:19.78 just as the blazing roof of the house fell in. After that 00:05:19.81\00:05:24.72 experience Wesley always believed that he was a brand 00:05:24.75\00:05:30.13 plucked from the burning, from the fire. His mother came to 00:05:30.16\00:05:34.00 believe that John had been miraculously saved by God for 00:05:34.03\00:05:38.70 some great work. When the rectory was rebuilt, it was done 00:05:38.73\00:05:43.51 in brick since it had already burned down twice before. 00:05:43.54\00:05:46.41 So, this is the actual home that John Wesley grew up in. Susannah 00:05:46.44\00:05:53.45 tried to save money by teaching her children at home. So, it was 00:05:53.48\00:05:57.85 here that Susannah ran the Wesley family school. It ran six 00:05:57.89\00:06:02.62 days a week from nine to five, with a break for lunch. The 00:06:02.66\00:06:08.73 Bible was the only textbook and Susannah taught the children to 00:06:08.76\00:06:12.20 memorize large sections and sometimes entire books from it. 00:06:12.23\00:06:17.11 Susannah Wesley was an amazing woman and the most powerful 00:06:17.14\00:06:22.48 influence in John's life. Through his mother's example 00:06:22.51\00:06:25.65 John Wesley learned to trust God and he also learned what it 00:06:25.68\00:06:31.12 means to live a disciplined Christian life. On June 14, 1720 00:06:31.15\00:06:38.83 John began attending classes at Christchurch, one of the leading 00:06:38.86\00:06:43.40 colleges at Oxford University. Wesley came from a long line of 00:06:43.43\00:06:47.14 distinguished church ministers but he wasn't sure if that was 00:06:47.17\00:06:52.27 the right thing for him. This put him thinking about what he 00:06:52.31\00:06:57.21 needed to do to please God. Was it enough to believe in Jesus 00:06:57.25\00:07:01.58 or did Christians have to do good works to prove that they 00:07:01.62\00:07:05.79 were saved? He talked with many people about this and concluded 00:07:05.82\00:07:10.83 that he didn't know the answer. But despite his questions and 00:07:10.86\00:07:16.46 uncertainty by the time he graduated in 1724, John Wesley 00:07:16.50\00:07:21.34 had decided that his future was in the church, and so he signed 00:07:21.37\00:07:26.74 up to study for a master's degree at Oxford to prepare for 00:07:26.78\00:07:31.41 ministry. In 1725, John was ordained as a minister of the 00:07:31.45\00:07:36.32 Church of England and he taught here at Lincoln College, one of 00:07:36.35\00:07:40.56 the smaller undergraduate colleges located in the very 00:07:40.59\00:07:44.63 heart of historic Oxford. Lincoln College is an 00:07:44.66\00:07:49.93 architectural gem and its ivy clad buildings ooze history. You 00:07:49.96\00:07:55.44 can just imagine the young John Wesley hurrying past the groomed 00:07:55.47\00:07:59.77 lawns and manicured gardens on his way to his class. John 00:07:59.81\00:08:03.98 Wesley became a fellow of Lincoln College. Today the 00:08:04.01\00:08:08.35 college keeps a Wesley room in his memory and there is a 00:08:08.38\00:08:12.05 commemorative plaque in the chapel quadrangle marking the 00:08:12.09\00:08:15.22 actual site of John Wesley's rooms. On the wall of a 00:08:15.26\00:08:19.76 residence building in one of the Lincoln College quads is a bust 00:08:19.79\00:08:23.53 of John Wesley and his name is etched on the glass doors of the 00:08:23.57\00:08:28.87 magnificent chapel to commemorate his time here. 00:08:28.90\00:08:33.58 By now his brother Charles was also studying at Oxford and 00:08:33.61\00:08:39.11 Charles started a club for people who wanted to live Godly 00:08:39.15\00:08:43.08 Christian lives and John quickly became the leader of the club. 00:08:43.12\00:08:46.86 Because of the low level of spirituality at Oxford at the 00:08:46.89\00:08:51.09 time John and Charles were ridiculed and the club was 00:08:51.13\00:08:54.90 mockingly called the Holiness Club. By today's Christian 00:08:54.93\00:09:00.70 standards I'd have to say that they were pretty over the top. 00:09:00.74\00:09:03.61 They would meet every day for three hours, fast two days a 00:09:03.64\00:09:08.61 week and pray every hour. John even developed a check list for 00:09:08.64\00:09:13.05 people to go through every day to examine their own behavior as 00:09:13.08\00:09:17.85 well as other members of the club so that they could keep 00:09:17.89\00:09:20.96 each other on the straight and narrow. Because they were so 00:09:20.99\00:09:25.43 methodical in their approach to religion people started to 00:09:25.46\00:09:28.86 mockingly call them Methodists. Secretly John didn't mind at 00:09:28.90\00:09:34.27 all. It's easy for us to judge John Wesley's approach to 00:09:34.30\00:09:38.47 Christianity as being way too strict and it probably was. But 00:09:38.51\00:09:43.78 you have to see it in the context of his time in society, 00:09:43.81\00:09:48.92 a time in which spirituality was in serious decline and in which 00:09:48.95\00:09:53.72 England looked to be following France into chaos. But what 00:09:53.76\00:09:57.53 happened next was to shake John to his core. John had been 00:09:57.56\00:10:04.27 invited to travel to the colony of Savannah, Georgia in North 00:10:04.30\00:10:09.57 America to serve as vicar in a church there. For John the idea 00:10:09.60\00:10:14.04 of being a missionary and converting all those Indians was 00:10:14.08\00:10:19.71 irresistible. He and his brother Charles traveled to the New 00:10:19.75\00:10:24.62 World on a ship together with another group of Christians 00:10:24.65\00:10:26.99 called Moravians who were originally from Bohemia, the 00:10:27.02\00:10:30.79 Czech Republic today. One night John and his fellow passengers 00:10:30.83\00:10:35.93 were all totally terrified in the middle of a fierce storm. 00:10:35.96\00:10:40.84 Mountainous waves were crashing over the ship. The mast had 00:10:40.87\00:10:44.17 broken off and the sails had been torn to pieces. But when 00:10:44.21\00:10:49.91 he went to check on his new Moravian friends John found that 00:10:49.94\00:10:54.08 they were peacefully singing hymns together and they told him 00:10:54.12\00:10:57.65 that they weren't at all afraid to die. John Wesley knew right 00:10:57.69\00:11:03.39 then that for all the strictness of his religion and all his good 00:11:03.43\00:11:07.63 works he had missed something, perhaps the most important thing 00:11:07.66\00:11:12.93 Although he was a pastor he hadn't discovered what true 00:11:12.97\00:11:16.81 faith was all about. This realization was to torment him 00:11:16.84\00:11:22.31 for the next few years. In Savannah in the New World, today 00:11:22.34\00:11:27.22 in the state of Georgia, John tried to impose his strict brand 00:11:27.25\00:11:31.15 of religion on his new church and of course he ended up with 00:11:31.19\00:11:36.22 no one liking him. Even worse his church didn't prosper at all 00:11:36.26\00:11:42.36 One of the rules that John had made for himself was that he 00:11:42.40\00:11:46.67 never marry so that he could focus strictly on his spiritual 00:11:46.70\00:11:51.67 duties. But while in Savannah he fell in love with a young 00:11:51.71\00:11:54.64 lady called Sophia. Day and night John was tormented by his 00:11:54.68\00:12:00.65 love for Sophia and his vow to never get married. Eventually 00:12:00.68\00:12:06.25 Sophia married another man and John was tremendously upset at 00:12:06.29\00:12:11.89 losing her. So much so that he publically embarrassed himself 00:12:11.93\00:12:15.80 and had to shamefully leave the colony at night. They've erected 00:12:15.83\00:12:20.24 a statue to John Wesley right in the heart of Savannah, Georgia 00:12:20.27\00:12:25.24 but two years after having arrived here John embarked on a 00:12:25.27\00:12:29.11 voyage back to England, a dismal failure, a broken man. During 00:12:29.14\00:12:34.25 the voyage back not only was he was he seasick, he was also 00:12:34.28\00:12:38.52 utterly depressed. He was doubting everything he'd 00:12:38.55\00:12:43.12 previously believed. He dreaded landing in England. How could he 00:12:43.16\00:12:48.73 face his family and friends? How could he continue as a Christian 00:12:48.76\00:12:52.87 minister when he didn't know what to believe himself. For 00:12:52.90\00:12:56.57 Wesley the journey to true faith wasn't easy. When he arrived 00:12:56.60\00:13:01.21 back in England he remembered the Moravian Christians who had 00:13:01.24\00:13:05.45 had such peace in the storm and he spent long days speaking with 00:13:05.48\00:13:10.15 them. When John's brother Charles accepted salvation by 00:13:10.19\00:13:15.46 grace alone purely as a gift from God, John was very upset at 00:13:15.49\00:13:21.43 him. But one event started to change John's mind. He was 00:13:21.46\00:13:26.20 sharing the gospel with a man in prison who had been sentenced to 00:13:26.23\00:13:29.70 hang the next day. John watched the man accept salvation through 00:13:29.74\00:13:34.14 Jesus and as he did that he himself suddenly realized the 00:13:34.18\00:13:39.91 truth about salvation. That prisoner didn't have any time at 00:13:39.95\00:13:44.75 all to do good works to prove that his faith was genuine. He 00:13:44.79\00:13:49.36 was being hung the next day. John realized the God's love was 00:13:49.39\00:13:54.83 great enough to save people without the need or dependence 00:13:54.86\00:13:58.77 on good works. However, John Wesley's true conversion 00:13:58.80\00:14:03.51 happened on the 25th of May 1738 while he attended a Moravian 00:14:03.54\00:14:10.95 meeting in Aldersgate Street in London. Today a plaque 00:14:10.98\00:14:13.21 commemorates this important event in Wesley's life. That day 00:14:13.25\00:14:19.05 part of Martin Luther's commentary on the book of Romans 00:14:19.09\00:14:22.22 was being read aloud and this is what Wesley wrote in his journal 00:14:22.26\00:14:27.30 for that day: 00:14:27.33\00:14:29.33 Finally, he had found lasting peace in his heart. Finally, 00:14:52.69\00:14:58.59 he'd found what true religion was all about. Finally he could 00:14:58.63\00:15:04.33 face God without fear and without depending on his own 00:15:04.37\00:15:07.44 strict works. This was the turning point in John Wesley's 00:15:07.47\00:15:11.11 life. Without this dramatic turnaround Wesley's name would 00:15:11.14\00:15:15.61 have been forgotten in the annals of history. John Wesley 00:15:15.64\00:15:20.15 would never have become the man who saved England. Now John had 00:15:20.18\00:15:26.05 finally realized his heart's desire to be a true Christian 00:15:26.09\00:15:31.19 and he felt compelled to tell others how to be saved by faith 00:15:31.23\00:15:35.93 too. He understood that true holiness, the right way of 00:15:35.96\00:15:40.24 living, could only come once he had truly accepted Jesus as his 00:15:40.27\00:15:45.94 Savior. Now all his good works were done, not to be saved, but 00:15:45.97\00:15:52.08 because he was saved. When he made it his mission in life 00:15:52.11\00:15:56.79 to tell others and the message he shared changed the heart of 00:15:56.82\00:16:02.49 England. From that time on Wesley began to travel across 00:16:02.52\00:16:06.26 Great Britain and Ireland on his horse sharing the good news 00:16:06.29\00:16:09.46 about Jesus and wherever he went he formed small Christian groups 00:16:09.50\00:16:14.40 These people were all called Methodists. During the early 00:16:14.44\00:16:22.14 part of his ministry Methodists were persecuted by the 00:16:22.18\00:16:28.08 established church. Sometimes they would even be attacked by 00:16:28.12\00:16:31.15 mobs and Wesley himself was barred from preaching in parish 00:16:31.19\00:16:37.03 churches. His friend, the evangelist George Whitfield, 00:16:37.06\00:16:40.50 had also been barred from preaching in churches and so he 00:16:40.53\00:16:44.13 started preaching in the open air. He suggested to Wesley that 00:16:44.17\00:16:48.50 he should do the same and that's exactly what he did. He began 00:16:48.54\00:16:52.84 taking every opportunity to preach outdoors wherever a crowd 00:16:52.87\00:16:58.38 gathered. More than once Wesley used his father's tombstone in 00:16:58.41\00:17:03.39 Epworth right here as a pulpit. Eventually the Methodists 00:17:03.42\00:17:08.46 started building places of worship which they called 00:17:08.49\00:17:12.16 chapels. A statue of John Wesley stands outside one of these 00:17:12.19\00:17:16.10 chapels called the Nuru Chapel in Bristol and for a period of 00:17:16.13\00:17:21.14 time this was one of Wesley's major bases. For 50 years 00:17:21.17\00:17:26.64 Wesley continued crisscrossing the country preaching wherever 00:17:26.68\00:17:31.61 he could and by the end of it he had become one of the most 00:17:31.65\00:17:35.32 popular and beloved men in all of England. During his lifetime 00:17:35.35\00:17:40.72 Wesley rode over 400,000 km. That's farther than all the way 00:17:40.76\00:17:46.96 to the moon and he preached more than 40,000 sermons. In 1778, 00:17:47.00\00:17:56.81 Wesley built this chapel here in City Road London. Even today 00:17:56.84\00:18:01.58 there's a thriving congregation here. Right next to the chapel 00:18:01.61\00:18:06.25 he built a house for himself, which you can visit today. 00:18:06.28\00:18:10.59 It was in this house that Wesley lived, studied and wrote, but 00:18:10.62\00:18:16.09 even more importantly it was from here that he directed the 00:18:16.12\00:18:20.63 vast movement that Methodism had now become and it's surprising 00:18:20.66\00:18:25.73 that despite Wesley's strictness in religions matters and despite 00:18:25.77\00:18:30.31 the culture of the time, he encouraged women to teach and 00:18:30.34\00:18:34.74 informally to preach. Wesley's vision of holy Christian living 00:18:34.78\00:18:38.98 went well beyond just the words. He thought that you couldn't say 00:18:39.01\00:18:44.45 you believed in Jesus and not be transformed in your personal 00:18:44.49\00:18:49.42 life. And more than that, true holiness also had to transform 00:18:49.46\00:18:54.80 our community and our society for good. Because of this 00:18:54.83\00:18:59.37 approach Methodists applied the biblical principles of kindness 00:18:59.40\00:19:03.87 and charity to the social problems of the day and as a 00:19:03.91\00:19:08.28 result they became key leaders of many of the pressing social 00:19:08.31\00:19:12.31 issues of the day. Wesley and his companions fought against 00:19:12.35\00:19:16.89 the alcoholism that was destroying the nation. They 00:19:16.92\00:19:21.02 dedicated themselves to feeding and educating the poor and 00:19:21.06\00:19:25.43 raising them up out of the gutter. Wesley fought against 00:19:25.46\00:19:30.23 the slave trade all his life and together with his companions he 00:19:30.27\00:19:37.11 campaigned against bribery and corruption. They fought against 00:19:37.14\00:19:40.21 cruelty to animals. They campaigned for prison reform and 00:19:40.24\00:19:44.01 to improve the conditions of factory workers. In short, there 00:19:44.05\00:19:48.68 was no area of English society that wasn't improved through the 00:19:48.72\00:19:53.76 influence and work of John Wesley and the movement that he 00:19:53.79\00:19:58.46 founded. As he lay dying, Wesley grasped the hands of his 00:19:58.49\00:20:06.07 friends who were with him, said farewell and as he did that he 00:20:06.10\00:20:09.60 repeated the words The best of all is God is with us. He died 00:20:09.64\00:20:15.81 in 1791 at the age of 87. This is Wesley's tomb at his chapel 00:20:15.84\00:20:21.68 on City Road London. He died poor because over the course of 00:20:21.72\00:20:28.46 his lifetime he'd given away everything that had come his way 00:20:28.49\00:20:32.66 to others in need. In fact, it's estimated that he gave away 00:20:32.69\00:20:37.63 30,000 pounds during his lifetime, an astronomical sum of 00:20:37.67\00:20:43.00 money back then. But Wesley's legacy could never be measured 00:20:43.04\00:20:47.18 by money. He left behind a nation that was far richer and 00:20:47.21\00:20:52.71 stronger than the country he'd been born into. He left behind 00:20:52.75\00:20:55.78 an England that when the tides of revolution battered it from 00:20:55.82\00:21:00.96 France had the spiritual and moral strength to resist. 00:21:00.99\00:21:04.96 Because 100 years after Wesley Europe broke out into a series 00:21:04.99\00:21:11.03 of bloody revolutions, terrorizing France, revolutions 00:21:11.07\00:21:16.57 broke out in Germany, in Poland, Italy and the Austrian Empire. 00:21:16.60\00:21:20.14 In fact, England was only one of very few countries that didn't 00:21:20.18\00:21:25.45 degenerate into violence and chaos. Why? Because John Wesley 00:21:25.48\00:21:31.25 had prepared the nation to withstand the forces of terror. 00:21:31.29\00:21:35.92 Because the influence of Wesley's spiritual revival had 00:21:35.96\00:21:39.83 transformed England into a very different society than that of 00:21:39.86\00:21:45.00 France. By calling people back to true religion, John Wesley is 00:21:45.03\00:21:50.97 the man who saved England. He almost certainly changed the 00:21:51.01\00:21:55.74 course of history and his call to personal and social holiness 00:21:55.78\00:21:59.41 still challenges Christians today. As we look around at our 00:21:59.45\00:22:05.02 society today we see more and more our rejection of the God 00:22:05.05\00:22:09.02 and the authority that underpinned our society in the 00:22:09.06\00:22:13.60 past. One wonders what the future holds. The story of John 00:22:13.63\00:22:18.03 Wesley is a great example of the principle the Bible teaches in 00:22:18.07\00:22:23.67 Proverbs chapter 29 and verse 18: 00:22:23.71\00:22:26.41 What this means is that where there is no knowledge of God's 00:22:35.48\00:22:39.92 word, when the Bible and its message are rejected, there are 00:22:39.95\00:22:44.09 no limits to the evil that people will do. That's what 00:22:44.13\00:22:47.40 happened in France and it almost happened in England. But the 00:22:47.43\00:22:52.67 message of John Wesley called people everywhere to recognize 00:22:52.70\00:22:56.84 their need of God in both their personal lives and throughout 00:22:56.87\00:23:00.91 their society. It was a practical religion that worked 00:23:00.94\00:23:05.18 to reform those areas of society where there was most moral 00:23:05.21\00:23:09.25 bankruptcy and suffering. The great religious revival in 00:23:09.28\00:23:14.26 England that followed the work of John Wesley is just one of 00:23:14.29\00:23:18.36 the many examples from history of what happens when people 00:23:18.39\00:23:21.83 rediscover the gospel, the good news of Jesus. What happened in 00:23:21.86\00:23:27.04 England as a result of John Wesley's work highlights the 00:23:27.07\00:23:30.71 power and importance of the Bible. It highlights the truth 00:23:30.74\00:23:34.98 of the promises of God's word and the importance of following 00:23:35.01\00:23:38.95 him. Notice what the Bible says in 2 Chronicles chapter 7 00:23:38.98\00:23:44.09 and verse 14: 00:23:44.12\00:23:46.65 This doesn't just apply to nations or even just to 00:24:02.04\00:24:06.88 churches. It also applies to us, to you and me, at a very 00:24:06.91\00:24:13.48 personal level. If you'd like to experience the power of God in 00:24:13.52\00:24:16.55 your life, if you'd like to experience a personal revival 00:24:16.58\00:24:20.12 in your own life, if you are ready to be humble before God 00:24:20.16\00:24:24.09 and seek him, then I'd like to invite you to commit your life 00:24:24.13\00:24:29.20 to him right now as we pray. 00:24:29.23\00:24:31.50 Dear Heavenly Father, you've promised that when we turn to 00:24:31.53\00:24:37.24 you, you will give us new strength and a new life. It's difficult to do the things we 00:24:48.75\00:24:53.46 want to do and to change the things we need to change in our 00:24:53.49\00:24:57.23 lives. Please come into our lives and transform us. But not 00:24:57.26\00:25:02.73 only our life, but may our families and our communities 00:25:02.76\00:25:06.67 be transformed as well. We pray not just for ourselves but for 00:25:06.70\00:25:12.87 our nation also and we ask these blessings in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:25:12.91\00:25:19.58 For many years John Wesley battled with disappointment and 00:25:19.61\00:25:24.89 deep discouragement as he struggled to find out what it 00:25:24.92\00:25:29.72 meant to live life as a Christian. When he discovered 00:25:29.76\00:25:32.63 the secret not only was his whole life transformed but its 00:25:32.66\00:25:37.93 impact uplifted every area of the life of his nation.
