¤ ¤ 00:00:03.87\00:00:34.13 The Mount of Olives overlooks one of the most magnificent and 00:00:34.16\00:00:37.73 most sacred cities in the world. This mount is one of three hills 00:00:37.77\00:00:42.44 on a long reach to the east of Jerusalem. It's one of the most 00:00:42.47\00:00:46.51 revered placed for Christians, Jews and Muslims alike. It rises 00:00:46.54\00:00:51.61 more than 800 meters and offers a spectacular view of the old 00:00:51.65\00:00:56.12 wall city of Jerusalem. This hill also called Mount Olivet, 00:00:56.15\00:01:04.03 takes its names from the fact that it was once covered with 00:01:04.06\00:01:07.06 olive trees and one of its most popular and sacred pilgrim sites 00:01:07.10\00:01:11.73 is an ancient olive grove, the Garden of Gethsemane. The old 00:01:11.77\00:01:19.04 gnarled trees have been here since the time of Jesus and the 00:01:19.07\00:01:21.91 olive grove holds a significant place in the Bible. One of the 00:01:21.94\00:01:27.75 most famous meeting meetings of all time took place here. It was 00:01:27.78\00:01:32.19 a night meeting. Words were spoken. Now of course billions 00:01:32.22\00:01:37.13 of words are spoken every second but every now and then mere 00:01:37.16\00:01:41.80 words change the shape of our world and alter our lives 00:01:41.83\00:01:45.97 forever and that's what happened here. During the course of that 00:01:46.00\00:01:51.07 conversation words were spoken that changed the world. Join me 00:01:51.11\00:01:55.44 as we explore the story of the solitary listener who attended 00:01:55.48\00:01:59.78 the amazing meeting that happened here. 00:01:59.81\00:02:02.92 ¤ ¤ 00:02:02.95\00:02:35.72 There are many spectacular and glorious mountains in our world. 00:02:35.75\00:02:38.49 They're famous because of their massive size, impressive peaks 00:02:38.52\00:02:43.12 and unique shapes. But one of the most famous of all doesn't 00:02:43.16\00:02:47.90 have any of those features. In fact, it's really only a hill, 00:02:47.93\00:02:52.60 but it's famous for another reason. Mountains don't get much 00:02:52.63\00:02:58.41 holier than the Mount of Olives, a sacred site to Judaism, 00:02:58.44\00:03:03.24 Christianity and Islam. In Jewish tradition the Messiah 00:03:03.28\00:03:09.35 will descend the Mount of Olives on judgment day and enter 00:03:09.38\00:03:12.59 Jerusalem through the golden gate in the center of the 00:03:12.62\00:03:15.46 eastern wall of the temple mount For this reason, Jews have 00:03:15.49\00:03:20.93 always wanted to buried on the slopes of the mount. This is the 00:03:20.96\00:03:27.27 oldest Jewish cemetery in the world. For over 3000 years Jews 00:03:27.30\00:03:31.74 have been buried here. And today there are over 150,000 graves 00:03:31.77\00:03:37.41 on the slopes. It's a tradition to place stones on the graves. 00:03:37.45\00:03:42.02 It shows that someone has visited the grave and that the 00:03:42.05\00:03:46.15 loved one is not forgotten and that their memory will last for 00:03:46.19\00:03:49.69 eternity just like the stones. History tells us that many 00:03:49.72\00:03:55.56 battles have been fought on this mount. During the siege of 00:03:55.60\00:03:59.67 Jerusalem which led to the destruction of the city in 00:03:59.70\00:04:01.90 A.D. 70 Roman soldiers from the 10th legion camped on the 00:04:01.94\00:04:06.37 mount. From here they attacked the city and destroyed its 00:04:06.41\00:04:10.98 beautiful temple. The Mount of Olives is closely associated 00:04:11.01\00:04:15.92 with Jesus. He spent a lot of time here and he knew this place 00:04:15.95\00:04:20.42 well. Today millions of pilgrims come here to follow in his 00:04:20.46\00:04:24.73 footsteps. Over the centuries 24 churches were built to 00:04:24.76\00:04:30.40 commemorate events in Christ's life that happened on the Mount 00:04:30.43\00:04:33.70 of Olives. Some of the churches are still here today and are 00:04:33.74\00:04:37.87 popular with the pilgrims. Near the summit of the Mount they 00:04:37.91\00:04:43.01 visit the church of Pater Noster that celebrates Christ's 00:04:43.04\00:04:47.12 teaching of the Lord's Prayer. The church features translations 00:04:47.15\00:04:50.15 of the prayer in 140 languages inscribed on colorful 00:04:50.19\00:04:56.66 surrounding plaques. Further down the mountain is the Church 00:04:56.69\00:05:00.43 of Dominus Flevit. It's shaped like a teardrop and remembers 00:05:00.46\00:05:05.87 Christ's tears as he wept over the future fate of Jerusalem. 00:05:05.90\00:05:10.64 Then there's the church of Mary Magdalene with its seven guilded 00:05:10.67\00:05:16.01 onion domes. It's one of Jerusalem's most picturesque 00:05:16.04\00:05:18.68 sights. The church was built in 1888 by Czar Alexander III of 00:05:18.71\00:05:24.12 Russia in memory of Mary Magdalene who found peace and 00:05:24.15\00:05:28.76 forgiveness in Jesus. Near the foot of the Mount of Olives is 00:05:28.79\00:05:33.76 the Church of All Nations. It's called this because many 00:05:33.80\00:05:37.70 countries contributed to the cost of its construction and 00:05:37.73\00:05:41.60 its revered because it's believed to be built over the 00:05:41.64\00:05:45.11 rock on which Jesus is believed to have prayed in agony 00:05:45.14\00:05:48.84 the night 00:05:48.88\00:05:50.48 before he was crucified. The church is situated in the Garden 00:05:50.51\00:05:54.42 of Gethsemane, a place whose name literally means oil press. 00:05:54.45\00:05:59.45 A grove of ancient olive trees still stands here today. Jesus 00:05:59.49\00:06:08.70 often came here. He used the ancient olive grove on the Mount 00:06:08.73\00:06:12.50 of Olives frequently as a favorite retreat when he needed 00:06:12.53\00:06:17.01 peace and quiet. And it was here that one of the world's most 00:06:17.04\00:06:20.88 memorable and important interviews took place. 00:06:20.91\00:06:24.28 The words that Jesus spoke that night not only dramatically 00:06:24.31\00:06:28.95 changed the life of the individual that met Jesus here, 00:06:28.98\00:06:31.99 but they've gone to the ends of the earth and changed the 00:06:32.02\00:06:36.49 destiny of millions of people and they haven't lost their 00:06:36.52\00:06:39.79 influence in our world today. The solitary listener who heard 00:06:39.83\00:06:46.00 the words of Jesus that night was an intellectual who studied 00:06:46.03\00:06:49.90 at the temple in Jerusalem. His life centered around that sacred 00:06:49.94\00:06:54.64 site. He was a Pharisee who belonged to the 71-member 00:06:54.68\00:06:58.58 Sanhedrin, the ruling legal council that was essentially 00:06:58.61\00:07:02.78 the supreme court of the Jewish people. His name, Nicodemus, 00:07:02.82\00:07:07.76 meant victor over the people. He was a man of learning, a man 00:07:07.79\00:07:13.16 of wealth and influence. He occupied a very important 00:07:13.19\00:07:16.67 position in society and everything in his aristocratic 00:07:16.70\00:07:21.17 background, everything in the beliefs held by his peers told 00:07:21.20\00:07:25.34 him not to make this risky visit. Night had settled over 00:07:25.37\00:07:33.55 the city and most of its inhabitants were in their homes. 00:07:33.58\00:07:36.95 But this one dignified prominent priest walked alone in the dark. 00:07:36.99\00:07:43.49 His destination was a certain quiet spot outside the city, 00:07:43.53\00:07:47.80 a place where Jesus of Nazareth was known to be. The Sanhedrin 00:07:47.83\00:07:54.44 was opposed to Jesus and his Messianic claims. Nicodemus as a 00:07:54.47\00:08:00.58 Pharisee had always believed that he stood for integrity for 00:08:00.61\00:08:03.71 the law of God, but Jesus seemed to be in constant 00:08:03.75\00:08:08.55 conflict with the Pharisees. Now if Jesus was a good man how 00:08:08.58\00:08:13.25 could this be? These were big questions and posed a terrible 00:08:13.29\00:08:18.03 dilemma for Nicodemus. Who knows what would have happened to 00:08:18.06\00:08:22.00 Nicodemus if his colleagues found out that one of their own 00:08:22.03\00:08:26.03 was so convinced that Jesus was from God that he sought him 00:08:26.07\00:08:30.31 under the cover of darkness. What Nicodemus couldn't admit 00:08:30.34\00:08:35.08 to himself was that he feared what his peers might say. He was 00:08:35.11\00:08:39.85 concerned about his own reputation. It was a bit 00:08:39.88\00:08:43.39 humiliating for him to be seen talking to this man called Jesus 00:08:43.42\00:08:49.22 but he was a troubled man. He had some questions that bothered 00:08:49.26\00:08:52.99 him. Who should he ask? Where could he find the answers? 00:08:53.03\00:08:59.27 So Nicodemus walked to the olive grove where Jesus was meditating 00:08:59.30\00:09:04.07 and here's what Nicodemus said to Jesus as recorded in 00:09:04.11\00:09:08.01 John chapter 3 and verse 2: 00:09:08.04\00:09:12.01 Now Nicodemus was asking about the true identity of Jesus. Most 00:09:20.29\00:09:27.16 Pharisees regarded Jesus as a problem rather than a teacher 00:09:27.20\00:09:31.53 come from God. Jesus didn't question Nicodemus' motive or 00:09:31.57\00:09:36.77 rebuke him for coming to visit at night. Jesus frankly made 00:09:36.81\00:09:41.51 this most famous reply recorded in John chapter 3 and verse 3: 00:09:41.54\00:09:46.35 Nicodemus thought he understood the concept of rebirth. Being 00:09:55.39\00:10:02.70 descendent of Abraham was a virtual guarantee of salvation. 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.70 At this time they believed that only non-Jews needed to be saved 00:10:05.73\00:10:11.47 by rebirth in the family of Abraham. So he asked in 00:10:11.51\00:10:15.11 disbelief in John chapter 3 and verse 4: 00:10:15.14\00:10:18.61 Nicodemus knew much better than to take Jesus' words literally. 00:10:27.62\00:10:33.03 The Jewish priests themselves spoke of Gentile converts as 00:10:33.06\00:10:37.83 children just born and they used the same metaphor to describe 00:10:37.87\00:10:41.84 a bridegroom at his marriage and a king at his enthronement. 00:10:41.87\00:10:47.38 Nicodemus was growing quite uncomfortable now. After all he 00:10:47.41\00:10:52.15 was at the very top of Jewish society, at the very top of 00:10:52.18\00:10:55.75 religious society. He was accustomed to issuing verdicts 00:10:55.78\00:11:00.46 and handing out judgments, not receiving pointed advice. 00:11:00.49\00:11:04.29 But here this Galilean teacher was telling him he had to be 00:11:04.33\00:11:09.70 born again spiritually. He had to start all over again. That 00:11:09.73\00:11:15.37 was a bit too much to take. Nicodemus was more convicted 00:11:15.40\00:11:20.58 than perplexed, but he asked skeptically, How can these 00:11:20.61\00:11:24.48 things be? Jesus earnestly told this Pharisee that he was 00:11:24.51\00:11:29.95 showing him the way to eternal life and then he spoke the words 00:11:29.98\00:11:34.26 that made this meeting so famous and the conversation so 00:11:34.29\00:11:40.00 important. They're found in John chapter 3 and verse 16: 00:11:40.03\00:11:43.73 These are the most loved, the most quoted, the most memorized, 00:11:55.71\00:12:00.38 the most famous words ever spoken. And no wonder. They 00:12:00.42\00:12:04.72 focus on humanity's biggest issue and give God's solution. 00:12:04.75\00:12:09.06 It's the gospel in a nutshell, it's salvation's formula. 00:12:09.09\00:12:13.40 It begins with God, it's driven by love, it ends with life. 00:12:13.43\00:12:18.93 He loves, he gave, we believe, we live. That's it. And so as 00:12:18.97\00:12:28.11 Nicodemus made his way back down the slope of this mountain 00:12:28.14\00:12:31.35 toward Jerusalem, he faced a question we all must face. 00:12:31.38\00:12:34.98 What am I going to do about it? What am I going to do with 00:12:35.02\00:12:40.72 Jesus? For three years Nicodemus pondered on this one single 00:12:40.76\00:12:46.66 encounter with Jesus and wrestled with his decision. 00:12:46.70\00:12:49.66 To be born again means to start all over again, believe in Jesus 00:12:49.70\00:12:56.07 and accept him as your Savior. Then to make an inner change 00:12:56.10\00:13:00.91 with Jesus in your life. Nicodemus faced a choice, an all 00:13:00.94\00:13:05.68 important choice. It was a choice between remaining a 00:13:05.71\00:13:09.62 questioning skeptic and becoming a follower of Jesus, a choice 00:13:09.65\00:13:15.09 between remaining where he was and entering into that whole new 00:13:15.12\00:13:20.23 world. To better understand his predicament, let's take a look 00:13:20.26\00:13:24.00 at what was happening in Jewish society at this time. 00:13:24.03\00:13:26.70 The Pharisees and Sadducees, the leaders of Jewish society 00:13:26.74\00:13:33.11 decided that Jesus posed a terrible threat. They began to 00:13:33.14\00:13:37.31 try to discredit him and they tried to trick Jesus with their 00:13:37.35\00:13:41.28 questions. They sent out bright young men, lawyers and scribes, 00:13:41.32\00:13:46.35 who posed as truth seekers to ask Jesus questions. But they 00:13:46.39\00:13:50.79 were questions designed to entrap. They tried to catch 00:13:50.83\00:13:55.03 Jesus saying something that could get him into trouble with 00:13:55.06\00:13:58.50 the authorities. The Jewish leaders were watching Jesus' 00:13:58.53\00:14:05.77 every move. They had their spies everywhere. They believed they 00:14:05.81\00:14:10.11 could expose Jesus as an imposter. Now Nicodemus was part 00:14:10.15\00:14:16.28 of this world of skepticism. He was a member of their exclusive 00:14:16.32\00:14:22.09 group. It was all a game, a very serious and deadly game, but a 00:14:22.12\00:14:26.80 game nevertheless. The questions weren't about getting answers. 00:14:26.83\00:14:30.77 They were about setting one up, about intellectual arguments and 00:14:30.80\00:14:36.10 proving who was right. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar? 00:14:36.14\00:14:39.77 If a woman has seven husbands who all die one after the other 00:14:39.81\00:14:44.25 whose wife will she be in the resurrection. A lawyer came up 00:14:44.28\00:14:49.15 one day and asked Jesus, Which is the greatest commandment in 00:14:49.18\00:14:52.72 the law? Yes the lawyers could occupy themselves endlessly on 00:14:52.75\00:14:57.56 that one. They could carry on very abstract arguments about 00:14:57.59\00:15:02.03 which principle had priority over another. Jesus, however, 00:15:02.06\00:15:07.30 summed it up very neatly with a statement from the book of 00:15:07.34\00:15:10.77 Deuteronomy in chapter 6 and verse 5: 00:15:10.81\00:15:14.18 Yes, that gives meaning to everything in life. But Jesus 00:15:22.12\00:15:27.52 wanted people to face the truth about themselves. Do you realize 00:15:27.56\00:15:31.79 that you can try to hide behind the truth. You can use it as a 00:15:31.83\00:15:36.56 shield, hold it out there in front of you, wield as a weapon, 00:15:36.60\00:15:40.14 try to win arguments with it. You can try to score points with 00:15:40.17\00:15:45.87 it. You can hide behind the truth. Yes, you can hide behind 00:15:45.91\00:15:50.08 the truth. You can quote it so well that nobody notices that 00:15:50.11\00:15:54.52 you're not dealing with the real problems inside. You can show 00:15:54.55\00:15:57.89 off the great state of mind so that no one notices the painful 00:15:57.92\00:16:02.62 state of your heart. You can't hide behind the truth. It's not 00:16:02.66\00:16:08.36 enough for you to have the right answers. It's not enough for you 00:16:08.40\00:16:11.97 to be able to quote God's principles. If it's not touching 00:16:12.00\00:16:16.71 your heart and if you're not allowing God into your life, 00:16:16.74\00:16:20.58 then it's not the truth because truth changes a person inside. 00:16:20.61\00:16:27.32 This is the drama, this is the dilemma that Nicodemus faced. 00:16:27.35\00:16:31.49 The part of him that was a skeptic wanted to hide behind 00:16:31.52\00:16:35.22 truth, but another part of him wanted to take Jesus' words to 00:16:35.26\00:16:39.89 heart. The proud Pharisee wanted to justify himself but the 00:16:39.93\00:16:45.67 honest seeker of truth wanted to be taught. It was a real 00:16:45.70\00:16:50.94 struggle here on the mount that night. Nicodemus asked Jesus two 00:16:50.97\00:16:55.01 questions; how can a man be born again? Jesus told him he must be 00:16:55.04\00:17:01.28 born of water and the Spirit. Wondering Nicodemus asked how 00:17:01.32\00:17:06.59 can these things be? Jesus explained about the Spirit by 00:17:06.62\00:17:11.53 using the example of the wind. We cannot see the wind but we 00:17:11.56\00:17:16.03 can see the effects of it. We cannot see the Holy Spirit, but 00:17:16.06\00:17:20.60 we can see the effects of it on people. It lifts people's 00:17:20.64\00:17:25.11 burdens. It comforts the sorrowing and opens up our 00:17:25.14\00:17:29.08 hearts to believe in Jesus. Nicodemus heard Jesus' words 00:17:29.11\00:17:34.72 and he couldn't make those words go away. They kept trying to get 00:17:34.75\00:17:38.19 down into his heart despite all the mental games he could play. 00:17:38.22\00:17:42.89 The skeptic was slowly turning into a follower, or at least he 00:17:42.92\00:17:48.26 was taking definite steps in that direction. We catch a 00:17:48.30\00:17:52.47 glimpse of this in a certain meeting of the Sanhedrin. They'd 00:17:52.50\00:17:56.57 been grilling some officials who'd been sent out to bring 00:17:56.60\00:17:59.27 Jesus in for questioning. The officers had failed to bring 00:17:59.31\00:18:04.45 arguments against Christ that would be convincing and the only 00:18:04.48\00:18:08.38 explanation they could offer was No man ever spoke like this man. 00:18:08.42\00:18:13.15 The Sanhedrin rulers were, of course, very upset, saying in 00:18:13.19\00:18:19.56 effect that only the ignorant crowd that follow this 00:18:19.59\00:18:22.86 Galilean Jesus. None of us believe in him. And it was at 00:18:22.90\00:18:27.70 this point, this very moment, that Nicodemus stood up among 00:18:27.74\00:18:32.07 his peers and said these words recorded in John the 7th chapter 00:18:32.11\00:18:37.25 and verse 51: 00:18:37.28\00:18:38.91 It was only a question. It may have been only a timid attempt 00:18:45.15\00:18:50.83 to turn back the tide of prejudice, but Nicodemus had 00:18:50.86\00:18:55.33 taken a step. He had exposed himself to the scorn of his 00:18:55.36\00:19:00.04 peers, the elite of Jerusalem. They immediately shot back at 00:19:00.07\00:19:04.67 him. Prophets just don't come out of Galilee. Are you also 00:19:04.71\00:19:09.81 from Galilee? Don't be so ridiculous. Don't be so ignorant 00:19:09.84\00:19:16.65 Nicodemus had to do some hard thinking after this. It was 00:19:16.69\00:19:20.89 becoming more evident that the Sanhedrin were acting out of 00:19:20.92\00:19:25.26 their jealousy and hatred. They could make their opposition to 00:19:25.29\00:19:29.43 Jesus sound very pious, but the murderous tone of their voices 00:19:29.46\00:19:34.67 was certainly identifying their motives. And yet how could he 00:19:34.70\00:19:38.84 turn his back on the Sanhedrin? How could Nicodemus turn from 00:19:38.87\00:19:43.95 them? He'd made it to the top. How could he take the risk of 00:19:43.98\00:19:47.78 losing everything. Well at a most unexpected, dark and 00:19:47.82\00:19:55.32 frightening time Nicodemus made a choice. The Sanhedrin had 00:19:55.36\00:20:00.70 sentenced Jesus to death. Jesus the Galilean was dying on a 00:20:00.73\00:20:06.10 Roman cross and the friends of Nicodemus were circling that 00:20:06.13\00:20:11.31 cross mocking the defeated enemy They suggested that if he was 00:20:11.34\00:20:16.38 really such a miracle worker that he should come down from 00:20:16.41\00:20:19.85 cross and save himself. But at that moment Nicodemus could no 00:20:19.88\00:20:25.65 longer join them. He'd seen something noble and 00:20:25.69\00:20:29.86 compassionate in the way he thought of others, the way he 00:20:29.89\00:20:33.40 forgave and the way that he died Nicodemus finally looked on this 00:20:33.43\00:20:39.23 Christ in terms of his own need as a human being. Standing there 00:20:39.27\00:20:44.51 at the foot of the cross he realized that pride was just too 00:20:44.54\00:20:50.15 heavy a load for him to bear. Always trying to defend yourself 00:20:50.18\00:20:54.52 was too wearisome a struggle. Always hiding behind the truth 00:20:54.55\00:20:58.92 was too self-defeating. It was time to let the truth sink into 00:20:58.95\00:21:05.23 his own heart. You must be born again. And so Nicodemus took the 00:21:05.26\00:21:12.20 big step. He hurried back into Jerusalem and purchased a 00:21:12.23\00:21:16.30 mixture of myrrh and aloes, the spices used for embalming and he 00:21:16.34\00:21:20.94 came back to the cross bearing these gifts. Another colleague 00:21:20.98\00:21:31.85 from the Sanhedrin, Joseph of Arimathea, had received 00:21:31.89\00:21:35.66 permission from Pilot to bury the body of Jesus. So as the 00:21:35.69\00:21:40.90 other members of the Sanhedrin watched in shock and amazement 00:21:40.93\00:21:44.30 Joseph and Nicodemus gently took Jesus' body down from the cross 00:21:44.33\00:21:49.47 and they wrapped Jesus in burial clothes along with myrrh and 00:21:49.50\00:21:54.98 aloes. Then they reverently carried him to Joseph's tomb. 00:21:55.01\00:21:58.18 And as Nicodemus carried the noblest person he'd ever known 00:21:58.21\00:22:03.32 he was sure that pride was too heavy a burden to carry. It was 00:22:03.35\00:22:07.86 far better to stop trying to be right all the time and to start 00:22:07.89\00:22:12.09 out as a needy human being at the foot of the cross. Pride is 00:22:12.13\00:22:19.07 just too heavy a burden to carry. Always defending 00:22:19.10\00:22:22.40 ourselves is too wearisome a struggle. Why not lay all this 00:22:22.44\00:22:27.64 baggage down at the foot of the cross right now as we pray. 00:22:27.68\00:22:34.08 Dear Heavenly Father, we're tired of playing mental games. 00:22:34.12\00:22:38.25 We're tired of keeping you at arm's length, tired of the 00:22:38.29\00:22:42.16 arguments. Take away this heavy burden of pride. We need you as 00:22:42.19\00:22:47.63 our Savior. We need you as the one who speaks to our hearts. 00:22:47.66\00:22:52.30 We want to become all that you intend us to be but we can't do 00:22:52.33\00:22:57.34 it on our own. We become proud and brittle, just relying on our 00:22:57.37\00:23:02.01 own strength. So we come to you acknowledging that even in our 00:23:02.04\00:23:07.52 strength there is weakness. We accept your gracious forgiveness 00:23:07.55\00:23:12.52 and love.
