¤ ¤ 00:00:01.36\00:00:26.45 Two thousand years ago the world was ruled by Rome from England 00:00:26.49\00:00:30.83 to Africa and from Spain to Syria. One of every four people 00:00:30.86\00:00:35.66 on earth lived and died under Roman law. The Roman emperors 00:00:35.70\00:00:39.93 ruled supreme and woe betide anyone who dared challenge their 00:00:39.97\00:00:46.27 power and authority. Rome's response was swift, brutal and 00:00:46.31\00:00:49.84 merciless as the people who lived here in Magdala discovered 00:00:49.88\00:00:54.05 Magdala was a prosperous first century port on the northwestern 00:00:54.08\00:01:00.62 shore of the Sea of Galilee. It had a population of 40,000 and a 00:01:00.66\00:01:05.63 fleet of 230 boats. It was a center of trade and commerce. 00:01:05.66\00:01:10.27 But the city chafed under Roman rule. The people wanted to be 00:01:10.30\00:01:14.60 free. And so Magdala became a center of rebellion against Rome 00:01:14.64\00:01:21.61 and a fortified base for rebels during the first Jewish revolt 00:01:21.64\00:01:24.18 that began in A.D. 66. Rome's response was immediate. In A.D. 00:01:24.21\00:01:37.03 67 three Roman legions commanded by Vespasian reached Magdala and 00:01:37.06\00:01:44.53 surrounded the city. After its defeat many of the rebels tried 00:01:44.57\00:01:47.57 to escape by boat across Galilee with disastrous results. The 00:01:47.60\00:01:53.21 Romans engaged them in sea battle and killed so many of 00:01:53.24\00:01:57.28 them that the water here in Galilee turned red with their 00:01:57.31\00:02:01.35 blood. Another 1200 were executed nearby Tiberius. Of the 00:02:01.38\00:02:09.62 remaining Magdala citizens 6000 were sent to build a canal in 00:02:09.66\00:02:15.20 Greece and 30,000 were sold as slaves. But Magdala's most 00:02:15.23\00:02:21.44 famous citizen escaped the tragedy. Years earlier she left 00:02:21.47\00:02:25.67 Magdala searching for freedom, freedom from the demons that 00:02:25.71\00:02:30.05 plagued her life. She joined a radical new social movement. At 00:02:30.08\00:02:34.88 its head was a charismatic young leader, Jesus of Nazareth, who 00:02:34.92\00:02:40.42 promised not only to change the world but to change people's 00:02:40.46\00:02:43.96 lives as well. In her desperate search for freedom Mary of 00:02:43.99\00:02:50.90 Magdala was drawn to follow Jesus' inspirational message. 00:02:50.93\00:02:53.87 It changed her life and got rid of her demons. She became a 00:02:53.90\00:02:58.94 leader among his followers and when the men in the group 00:02:58.97\00:03:02.21 abandoned him in his hour of mortal danger, Mary of Magdala 00:03:02.24\00:03:07.28 was one of the faithful who stayed with him even to the 00:03:07.32\00:03:10.62 public execution. She was present at the tomb. She was the 00:03:10.65\00:03:22.06 first to see him alive after his resurrection and the first to 00:03:22.10\00:03:26.37 tell others about him. But still we seem to know so little about 00:03:26.40\00:03:31.07 this other Mary, Mary from Magdala, here near the shores 00:03:31.11\00:03:35.28 of the sea of Galilee. But today we'll find out about the secret 00:03:35.31\00:03:40.72 that transformed her life and brought her peace and happiness. 00:03:40.75\00:03:44.82 ¤ ¤ 00:03:44.85\00:04:18.65 After the Romans destroyed Magdala in A.D. 67, the once 00:04:18.69\00:04:22.59 thriving city was never reestablished. Soon it was lost 00:04:22.62\00:04:26.66 and forgotten, buried beneath layers of soil deposited by rain 00:04:26.70\00:04:32.63 water and floods over 2000 years. The only real source of 00:04:32.67\00:04:37.04 information about Magdala and its demise was Josef ben 00:04:37.07\00:04:42.61 Matityahu, the leader of the Jewish forces in Galilee during 00:04:42.64\00:04:45.91 the third Jewish revolt. He was eventually captured by the 00:04:45.95\00:04:50.25 Romans at the Battle of Jotapata and taken prisoner. After being 00:04:50.29\00:04:54.89 freed by the Roman emperor Vespasian he defected to the 00:04:54.92\00:04:59.69 Roman side took on a Roman name Josephus Flavius and became the 00:04:59.73\00:05:03.97 emperor's official historian. But even his famous eye witness 00:05:04.00\00:05:08.64 account of the fate of Magdala couldn't keep the town from 00:05:08.67\00:05:12.04 drifting into oblivion. Soon it disappeared. And then in the 00:05:12.07\00:05:20.22 1960s something remarkable happened. Archeologists 00:05:20.25\00:05:24.89 discovered Magdala's ancient port and the city grid with 00:05:24.92\00:05:29.92 paved streets, water canal's, a market place, grand villas and 00:05:29.96\00:05:34.00 mosaics, one even depicting a sailing boat. Buried in the mud 00:05:34.03\00:05:39.63 covering a thermal bath complex they discovered ceramic pottery, 00:05:39.67\00:05:44.91 perfume jars, jewelry, hair brushes and comb and bronze 00:05:44.94\00:05:48.91 applicators for makeup. They also discovered the massive 00:05:48.94\00:05:52.85 foundations of a tower that may account for the city's name. 00:05:52.88\00:05:56.69 Both Magdala in Aramaic and Migdal in Hebrew mean tower. The 00:05:56.72\00:06:02.92 pieces were all falling into place. Ancient Magdala was 00:06:02.96\00:06:08.00 coming back to life. More archeological remains were 00:06:08.03\00:06:14.50 uncovered nearby in 2009. They found three interconnecting 00:06:14.54\00:06:18.94 ritual baths. They were the first found in Israel that used 00:06:18.97\00:06:23.65 ground water from springs which for purification purposes was 00:06:23.68\00:06:28.75 considered living water rather than rain water. In the remains 00:06:28.78\00:06:35.62 of one building under a thin layer of soil archeologists 00:06:35.66\00:06:39.33 found a stone block engraved with motifs including a seven 00:06:39.36\00:06:42.73 branched menorah, the type of lamp stand used in the Jerusalem 00:06:42.76\00:06:47.40 temple. This amazing discovery led to the identification of the 00:06:47.44\00:06:52.11 building as a synagogue. It's the only first century synagogue 00:06:52.14\00:06:57.25 along the Sea of Galilee and one of only seven synagogues from 00:06:57.28\00:07:02.18 this period in all the world. It's almost certain that Jesus 00:07:02.22\00:07:07.12 visited and taught right here in this synagogue. Here's what the 00:07:07.16\00:07:14.83 Bible says in Mark chapter 1 and verse 39: 00:07:14.86\00:07:18.53 It's quite likely that Mary of Magdala first heard the 00:07:28.74\00:07:33.75 inspiring message of Jesus right here and that the first seeds of 00:07:33.78\00:07:38.49 faith were sown here that transformed her life, got rid of 00:07:38.52\00:07:43.66 the demons and brought her peace and happiness. As archeologists 00:07:43.69\00:07:56.60 dig in Magdala, Mary's home town, as they peel back the 00:07:56.64\00:07:58.54 layers of 2000 years they're shedding light on one of the 00:07:58.57\00:08:02.48 most mysterious figures of the Bible. Mary Magdalene was real. 00:08:02.51\00:08:07.52 Her challenges, struggles and joys were real. Her life was 00:08:07.55\00:08:13.12 truly transformed by Jesus. So let's dig a little deeper and 00:08:13.15\00:08:18.79 find out more. The first encounter between Mary and Jesus 00:08:18.83\00:08:28.87 isn't described in detail. We don't have the complete story. 00:08:28.90\00:08:33.31 But what we do have is this statement in the Gospel of Luke, 00:08:33.34\00:08:37.98 chapter 8, verses 1 and 2: 00:08:38.01\00:08:39.61 Now let's think about this for a moment. How many people get 00:09:00.90\00:09:06.88 down to the point where they're actually possessed by demons. 00:09:06.91\00:09:10.01 But many are controlled by some single compulsion. Mary had 00:09:10.05\00:09:16.52 somehow reached the point of demon possession, some evil 00:09:16.55\00:09:19.85 thing had control of her. Her life was a mess and she 00:09:19.89\00:09:23.63 certainly had lots of problems. Now the Bible doesn't tell us 00:09:23.66\00:09:28.50 exactly what the problems were but more importantly it tells us 00:09:28.53\00:09:33.47 that she experienced a profound kind of deliverance from her 00:09:33.50\00:09:37.41 encounter with Jesus. Something happened that transformed her, 00:09:37.44\00:09:42.04 turned her life around, took her problems away and replaced them 00:09:42.08\00:09:47.28 with peace and happiness. Yes, something happened that turned 00:09:47.32\00:09:53.42 her into a loyal and faithful follower of Jesus, one who was 00:09:53.46\00:09:57.49 even prepared to stand by him at the cross when the rest of his 00:09:57.53\00:10:01.20 disciples, those strong men, ran away and abandoned him. 00:10:01.23\00:10:09.57 So what made the difference. What turned Mary Magdalene, 00:10:09.60\00:10:13.41 from a broken woman, a seven time failure into a loyal and 00:10:13.44\00:10:17.98 faithful follower of Jesus. Well perhaps we start to see the 00:10:18.01\00:10:22.55 answer in something Jesus said. Once Peter, a leading disciple 00:10:22.58\00:10:28.72 of Jesus, asked him how many times he was obliged to forgive 00:10:28.76\00:10:32.83 someone who continued to mess up, to fail. Peter thought he 00:10:32.86\00:10:38.63 was being generous when he said up to seven times. And Jesus 00:10:38.67\00:10:42.70 replied with these words in Matthew chapter 18 and verse 22: 00:10:42.74\00:10:48.84 In other words, just keep on forgiving. Jesus didn't want to 00:10:54.25\00:11:00.56 put any limits on forgiveness. And it was more than just 00:11:00.59\00:11:03.83 quantity, pardoning someone over and over and over again numerous 00:11:03.86\00:11:07.76 times. It was more than that. The quality of Jesus' 00:11:07.80\00:11:09.96 was also limitless. When Mary came to Jesus with huge 00:11:10.00\00:11:12.10 problems and repeated failures he didn't just wave off the 00:11:12.13\00:11:21.24 the offense like some judge reluctantly giving a seven time 00:11:21.28\00:11:25.45 offender one more chance. Jesus accepted her graciously. He 00:11:25.48\00:11:29.88 forgave her generously, unconditionally. He was willing 00:11:29.92\00:11:34.39 to wrestle with the demons on her behalf. I believe it was the 00:11:34.42\00:11:39.03 quality of Christ's forgiveness that transformed this woman so 00:11:39.06\00:11:42.96 profoundly. That was the key element in her encounter with 00:11:43.00\00:11:48.00 Jesus. The Bible itself suggests that. Let's look at a certain 00:11:48.04\00:11:51.51 thing Luke tells us about in his Gospel in 00:11:51.54\00:11:54.08 Luke chapter 23 and verse 49: 00:11:54.11\00:11:57.51 Mary Magdalene kept her vigil with a group of other women, 00:12:06.02\00:12:09.56 women who kept their devotion alive in the darkest hour, the 00:12:09.59\00:12:13.93 crucifixion hour. Think of some of the women that Jesus 00:12:13.96\00:12:27.98 encountered during his ministry. Think of some of the failures he 00:12:28.01\00:12:33.55 encountered. There was the woman who was caught by the Pharisees 00:12:33.58\00:12:36.62 in the act of adultery. Now Adultery in Jesus' day was 00:12:36.65\00:12:41.49 something that got you stoned to death. But Jesus disarmed her 00:12:41.52\00:12:46.06 accusers with one deft stroke. Notice what he declared in 00:12:46.09\00:12:49.80 John chapter 8 and verse 7: 00:12:49.83\00:12:52.83 And the vengeful men just melted away. I think it significant 00:12:58.44\00:13:04.55 that when Jesus asked her, has no one condemned you? She 00:13:04.58\00:13:09.45 answered very meekly, No one. This woman called Jesus Lord. 00:13:09.48\00:13:16.16 He had quietly removed her tormentors from the scene. When 00:13:16.19\00:13:19.36 she looked up they were gone. It's no wonder she called him 00:13:19.39\00:13:23.37 Lord. Jesus showed such a gracious way, almost an 00:13:23.40\00:13:29.00 understanding way of expressing forgiveness. If all those angry, 00:13:29.04\00:13:32.71 indignant people aren't condemning you anymore, well I 00:13:32.74\00:13:36.71 certainly won't either. At the worst moment in her life this 00:13:36.75\00:13:42.28 woman heard those gentle words of encouragement. Of course she 00:13:42.32\00:13:47.86 called him Lord. Now we see the quality of Christ's forgiveness 00:13:47.89\00:13:50.63 even more clearly in another encounter he had with a failure. 00:13:50.66\00:13:55.70 One evening Jesus went to dine at the home of a Pharisee named 00:13:55.73\00:14:00.57 Simon. It was rather early in Jesus' ministry. He was just 00:14:00.60\00:14:04.61 beginning to attract attention. Some thought he might even be a 00:14:04.64\00:14:09.18 prophet. So of course the best people in town were there to 00:14:09.21\00:14:12.58 check him out. But one person managed to slip in uninvited 00:14:12.61\00:14:18.12 through the open courtyard mingling further with the 00:14:18.15\00:14:21.59 servants, then up the veranda steps and into the dining hall. 00:14:21.62\00:14:25.16 No one noticed her at first. The room was crowded with people 00:14:25.19\00:14:29.40 conversing. But then they began to smell something pungent, 00:14:29.43\00:14:33.54 something very different from the aroma of the food on the 00:14:33.57\00:14:37.94 table. It smelled like perfume. As the guests paused to take 00:14:37.97\00:14:42.44 this in they heard the sound of a woman sobbing. Simon spotted 00:14:42.48\00:14:46.72 her bent over Jesus' feet as he reclined at the table. Here was 00:14:46.75\00:14:51.32 his guest of honor accosted by a stranger. The woman's tears fell 00:14:51.35\00:14:57.19 on Jesus' feet and she was wiping them with her hair and 00:14:57.23\00:15:01.46 pouring expensive perfume on them from an alabaster vial. 00:15:01.50\00:15:05.57 Simon was unnerved by this rude interruption but he really got 00:15:05.60\00:15:09.77 upset when he got a glimpse of her face. This woman was well 00:15:09.80\00:15:14.08 known all over town. How could it be that Jesus was allowing 00:15:14.11\00:15:18.38 her to touch him. If he really was a prophet, Simon thought, 00:15:18.41\00:15:22.38 then surely he would know what kind of person she was. In the 00:15:22.42\00:15:27.19 middle of all this disturbance Jesus proceeded to tell Simon 00:15:27.22\00:15:30.99 a story. A certain money changer had two debtors. One owed 5000 00:15:31.03\00:15:37.07 dollars, the other 50. Both were unable to pay and so the money 00:15:37.10\00:15:41.90 lender just cancelled both their debts. Which of them, Jesus 00:15:41.94\00:15:46.47 asked, will love him more. Simon had listened patiently. Then he 00:15:46.51\00:15:51.31 answered, I suppose the one who was forgiven more. So Jesus told 00:15:51.35\00:15:55.92 him plainly, when I came in you didn't wash my feet, but this 00:15:55.95\00:16:01.22 woman has bathed them with her tears. You didn't anoint my head 00:16:01.26\00:16:04.36 but she has anointed my feet with perfume. And then he 00:16:04.39\00:16:15.84 uttered these words found in Luke chapter 7 and verse 47: 00:16:15.87\00:16:20.04 Then Jesus turned to the woman and whispered, Your sins are 00:16:31.92\00:16:38.19 forgiven. Everyone in that room had expected this woman, who 00:16:38.23\00:16:42.20 they regarded as a social outcast, to be put in her place. 00:16:42.23\00:16:46.94 Well, Jesus did. Her put her at the head of the table. He 00:16:46.97\00:16:53.04 explained that she only truly understood what it means to be 00:16:53.07\00:16:56.44 forgiven and she had responded with a wealth of devotion. Jesus 00:16:56.48\00:17:01.85 made this notorious failure an example for them all. He who is 00:17:01.88\00:17:07.19 forgiven much loves much. That's the secret behind those women 00:17:07.22\00:17:12.46 keeping their vigil at the cross. Jesus had many other 00:17:12.49\00:17:17.03 followers at that time. Many others continued to be loyal, 00:17:17.07\00:17:19.83 many others wanted to believe in him, but they weren't there. 00:17:19.87\00:17:23.77 Almost all the disciples had fled the scene. But he who is 00:17:23.81\00:17:29.64 forgiven much loves much. That's what those women at the foot of 00:17:29.68\00:17:34.25 the cross had. They had an appreciation for the quality of 00:17:34.28\00:17:38.62 Christ's forgiveness and it inspired a devotion that no dark 00:17:38.65\00:17:42.79 night, no terrible execution could blot out. Have you ever 00:17:42.82\00:17:47.90 felt like a failure? Maybe you've struggled with a habit 00:17:47.93\00:17:51.00 that tripped you up over and over again. Maybe you felt 00:17:51.03\00:17:54.70 imprisoned by the same destructive emotions over and 00:17:54.74\00:17:58.04 over again. Maybe you know what it's like to try to come to God 00:17:58.07\00:18:02.48 in repentance for the same old thing when you've already come 00:18:02.51\00:18:06.55 countless times before. Well I want you to take heart from an 00:18:06.58\00:18:12.29 extraordinary group of people keeping their vigil at the cross 00:18:12.32\00:18:15.66 I want you to know that Jesus' forgiveness is like nothing else 00:18:15.69\00:18:20.96 Jesus' forgiveness can ennoble. He who is forgiven much can love 00:18:21.00\00:18:28.00 him much. We have to grasp the words of the Forgiver. We have 00:18:28.04\00:18:32.47 to receive forgiveness in the same wholehearted way as that 00:18:32.51\00:18:37.31 woman wiping Jesus' feet with her hair. Your failures can be 00:18:37.35\00:18:41.75 redeemed by Christ's forgiveness if you really come to appreciate 00:18:41.78\00:18:46.05 what that act means. If you sense how graciously Christ 00:18:46.09\00:18:49.82 forgives. If you touch the heart of the Great Forgiver. If you 00:18:49.86\00:18:54.93 understand the worth of the one who extends forgiveness. That's 00:18:54.96\00:19:00.34 how we're changed. A lot of human forgiveness is really kind 00:19:00.37\00:19:04.31 of like a condescending put down People may not be genuine. They 00:19:04.34\00:19:10.81 say sure I'll forgive you, but in their heart there is no 00:19:10.85\00:19:14.75 genuine forgiveness. We've all experienced that. Jesus' 00:19:14.78\00:19:19.15 forgiveness though lifts us up. It lifted Mary Magdalene. She 00:19:19.19\00:19:24.73 knew that she was accepted in him. She knew he loved her 00:19:24.76\00:19:29.50 unconditionally and it made her the first to bear witness to the 00:19:29.53\00:19:33.13 most glorious event in human history. Early Sunday morning 00:19:33.17\00:19:44.21 after Jesus' crucifixion Mary came to the tomb of Christ with 00:19:44.25\00:19:48.35 spices and ointments to care for his body. But to her 00:19:48.38\00:19:51.92 astonishment the stone had been rolled away from the tomb's 00:19:51.95\00:19:55.02 entrance and the body had disappeared. The tomb was empty. 00:19:55.06\00:19:59.89 Mary hurried back to Jerusalem to tell Peter and John that 00:19:59.93\00:20:04.37 someone had taken Jesus Christ's body. We don't know where they 00:20:04.40\00:20:08.87 laid him she said. She still couldn't grasp the idea of a 00:20:08.90\00:20:13.27 resurrection. The two disciples ran to the garden tomb and saw 00:20:13.31\00:20:18.78 the grave clothes lying inside but no body. Peter and John went 00:20:18.81\00:20:23.55 back to tell the others the strange news. But Mary couldn't 00:20:23.59\00:20:28.36 leave the scene. She couldn't bear the thought of never being 00:20:28.39\00:20:32.89 able to honor her master at his grave. She just stood there 00:20:32.93\00:20:36.80 weeping for some time. Mary was keeping another vigil. And then 00:20:36.83\00:20:43.91 she heard a voice ask, Woman why are you crying and who are you 00:20:43.94\00:20:48.28 looking for? Mary looked up and at first didn't quite recognize 00:20:48.31\00:20:52.35 the man through her tears. She assumed he was the caretaker and 00:20:52.38\00:20:57.62 asked about Jesus' body. You can hear the pleading, the longing 00:20:57.65\00:21:01.39 longing in her voice when she asked as recorded in John 00:21:01.42\00:21:05.59 chapter 20 and verse 15: 00:21:05.63\00:21:08.16 Then the Man called her by name, Mary and that voice went right 00:21:16.44\00:21:23.35 through her. It was the same loving voice that had given her 00:21:23.38\00:21:27.52 hope as a seven-time offender, the same strong voice that had 00:21:27.55\00:21:32.12 cast out her demons. Mary looked up and exclaimed, Raboni, 00:21:32.15\00:21:39.36 teacher. She rushed to where Christ stood, threw herself down 00:21:39.39\00:21:43.16 at his feet. This was too wonderful to be true. She'd 00:21:43.20\00:21:46.67 watched at the crucifixion and yet there he stood healthy and 00:21:46.70\00:21:51.64 radiant. It was overwhelming. Yes, as overwhelming as Christ's 00:21:51.67\00:21:58.11 forgiveness. And there by that garden tomb clutching Jesus' 00:21:58.15\00:22:05.15 feet, Mary Magdalene was the woman who loved much. She was 00:22:05.19\00:22:09.96 was the woman saved from the demons, saved from humiliation, 00:22:09.99\00:22:14.50 saved from despair. She was saved from all of her problems. 00:22:14.53\00:22:20.00 She represents all those who fail terribly, all those who've 00:22:20.04\00:22:25.44 been terribly shamed. And above all, she was all she was the one 00:22:25.47\00:22:30.15 who was dignified by forgiveness She was the one whom forgiveness 00:22:30.18\00:22:35.35 had made heroic. Jesus gave her the most important of 00:22:35.38\00:22:39.72 commissions. It's found in John chapter 20 and verse 17: 00:22:39.75\00:22:43.36 And so Mary Magdalene became the first and foremost witness of 00:22:55.84\00:23:00.44 Christ's resurrection. She was the first to say, I have seen 00:23:00.48\00:23:04.58 him alive from the dead. Have you discovered the quality of 00:23:04.61\00:23:11.19 Christ's forgiveness? Have you grasped the worth of the one 00:23:11.22\00:23:14.46 who extends this grace? Have you experienced his unconditional 00:23:14.49\00:23:20.73 love. Your failures, your humiliations can become a tool 00:23:20.76\00:23:24.40 in God's hands. They can help you finally know the depths of 00:23:24.43\00:23:30.17 Christ's forgiveness.
