¤ ¤ 00:00:02.43\00:00:26.79 Maori were ill hundreds at a time. Our medical man at 00:00:26.82\00:00:31.09 Toltaki was of great service. 00:00:31.13\00:00:32.63 and the deaths there have been few. But at other places there 00:00:32.66\00:00:37.30 have been many deaths. I found the population of whole 00:00:37.33\00:00:40.17 villages laid low and without the necessary supplies. In some 00:00:40.20\00:00:45.27 homes all were ill and there were none to fetch water and 00:00:45.31\00:00:47.78 light fires. I have for many weeks been attending measles 00:00:47.81\00:00:52.45 patients. I was not surprised to be taken ill with it while I was 00:00:52.48\00:00:55.88 in Wellington. I've been unfit for any work for nearly three 00:00:55.92\00:01:01.52 weeks. ¤ ¤ 00:01:01.56\00:01:07.73 The work of missionaries throughout the 1800s in 00:01:07.76\00:01:10.63 Aotearoa, New Zealand involved much more than simply going to 00:01:10.67\00:01:15.80 church and preaching the gospel on Sunday mornings. 00:01:15.84\00:01:18.57 The dedicated missionaries were fully involved in the day to day 00:01:18.61\00:01:23.55 activities of those they came to help. Their dedicated service 00:01:23.58\00:01:27.98 was practical, dynamic and often involved high risk to themselves 00:01:28.02\00:01:33.39 Yet we don't hear much about them and most people don't even 00:01:33.42\00:01:38.89 know any of their names. Well today we're going to discover 00:01:38.93\00:01:43.53 the character and devotion of one of these amazing individuals 00:01:43.57\00:01:47.87 Christian missionaries first arrived in Aotearoa, New Zealand 00:01:47.90\00:01:55.24 in the year 1814. In the very same year on the other side 00:01:55.28\00:02:01.62 of the globe on the Isle of Wight a baby boy was born. This 00:02:01.65\00:02:06.25 child although sickly and near death on several occasions would 00:02:06.29\00:02:10.93 grow into a man who would later be described as the most 00:02:10.96\00:02:14.83 remarkable man the colony of New Zealand ever knew. He 00:02:14.86\00:02:19.63 befriended of fierce warrior chiefs, brought down a governor, 00:02:19.67\00:02:22.77 guided politicians, saved a city became the conscience to a 00:02:22.80\00:02:28.48 nation and the enemy of prime ministers. He was a man of 00:02:28.51\00:02:32.01 principle who was hard hitting and fast seeing. He was a man 00:02:32.05\00:02:37.22 resented injustice with every fiber of his being and yet 00:02:37.25\00:02:42.12 despite all of this the name Octavius Hadfield isn't 00:02:42.16\00:02:48.96 appreciated much today. Few know of his brave peace making 00:02:49.00\00:02:52.67 escapades between fighting Maori tribes or his fearless 00:02:52.70\00:02:55.97 denunciation of the crown, the British colonial government, in 00:02:56.00\00:03:00.08 New Zealand in its gross discrimination against Maori. 00:03:00.11\00:03:03.78 During the years that he spent in Aotearoa, New Zealand 00:03:03.81\00:03:07.95 Octavius Hadfield's faith in God never wavered. He practiced 00:03:07.98\00:03:13.22 what he preached and the consistency with which he 00:03:13.25\00:03:17.19 practiced his religion won the hearts of Maori. They completely 00:03:17.23\00:03:21.30 trusted and respected him and knew that his words could be 00:03:21.33\00:03:25.43 relied on. They could see that his commitment to the great God 00:03:25.47\00:03:30.31 of heaven was the genuine article. In short, Maori loved 00:03:30.34\00:03:36.38 him. Join me as we follow the footsteps and exploits of the 00:03:36.41\00:03:41.52 remarkable Octavius Hadfield. His story will inspire and 00:03:41.55\00:03:47.22 encourage you. 00:03:47.26\00:03:48.96 ¤ ¤ 00:03:48.99\00:04:11.58 Octavius Hadfield was born at Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight 00:04:11.61\00:04:14.82 on the 6th of October 1814. He was the 10th and youngest son of 00:04:14.85\00:04:22.32 Joseph Hadfield, a silk merchant The family attended the local 00:04:22.36\00:04:27.43 church. Hadfield's parents were wealthy and their large family 00:04:27.46\00:04:31.80 enjoyed a free and interesting childhood. But in his early 00:04:31.83\00:04:36.20 teens Hadfield's education was cut short. He began to suffer 00:04:36.24\00:04:41.31 serious asthma attacks. He was forced to leave school and 00:04:41.34\00:04:46.38 studied on his own at home. Sometimes he was so ill the 00:04:46.41\00:04:51.29 doctors didn't think he would survive. Later he attended 00:04:51.32\00:04:56.73 Oxford University and studied at Pembroke College. But 00:04:56.76\00:05:00.06 continued ill health brought an end to formal university studies 00:05:00.10\00:05:06.10 Despite his ill health at about this time Octavius wrote about 00:05:06.13\00:05:11.47 his future plans: 00:05:11.51\00:05:13.98 Hadfield hadn't seen any missionary literature. But the 00:05:21.75\00:05:28.09 young man had read and studied the New Testament and the 00:05:28.12\00:05:31.49 teachings of Jesus. In particular he grasped Christ's 00:05:31.53\00:05:36.53 great commission in Matthew chapter 28: 00:05:36.56\00:05:39.53 The young man showed a great indignation that the clear 00:05:56.99\00:06:01.42 command for Christians to go to all nations had gone largely 00:06:01.46\00:06:04.69 unheeded for 1800 years. The very thought appalled Octavius. 00:06:04.73\00:06:12.23 He sensed the strong conviction to do his part to fulfill this 00:06:12.27\00:06:16.40 command of Christ. So he wrote to the church missionary society 00:06:16.44\00:06:22.18 informing them that he was prepared to work as a missionary 00:06:22.21\00:06:25.05 anywhere in the world. But because he didn't have a 00:06:25.08\00:06:30.02 university degree he wasn't accepted for ordination in 00:06:30.05\00:06:33.52 England. However, the door was finally opened for the now 00:06:33.56\00:06:37.26 23-year-old Octavius Hadfield. He heard that the Bishop of 00:06:37.29\00:06:42.03 Australia William Broughton was prepared to ordain suitable men 00:06:42.06\00:06:45.43 without a degree to work in Australia and New Zealand. And 00:06:45.47\00:06:50.11 so on the 12th of February 1838 he left his home and family and 00:06:50.14\00:06:55.84 sailed to the other side of the world. He arrived in Ft. Jackson 00:06:55.88\00:07:00.68 known now as Sydney five months later. During his brief time in 00:07:00.72\00:07:05.35 Australia Hadfield became the first missionary to be ordained 00:07:05.39\00:07:09.46 as a deacon in Australasia. Later that year he crossed the 00:07:09.49\00:07:15.23 Tasman sea and in December 1838 though still in poor health, the 00:07:15.26\00:07:21.97 tall, lean Octavius Hadfield arrived at Paihia in the north 00:07:22.00\00:07:27.58 of Aotearoa, New Zealand and a few weeks later on the 6th of 00:07:27.61\00:07:33.42 January 1839 he became the first clergyman to be ordained in New 00:07:33.45\00:07:41.22 Zealand. By now there were about 2000 European settlers living in 00:07:41.26\00:07:47.03 Aotearoa, New Zealand among a population of over 100,000 Mauri 00:07:47.06\00:07:53.97 The lucrative businesses of whaling and sealing had drawn 00:07:54.00\00:07:57.87 the Europeans. They also wanted the fabulous timbers found in 00:07:57.91\00:08:02.71 the forests along with the opportunities the flax trade 00:08:02.74\00:08:07.38 provided. Meanwhile at Paihia the missionaries worked 00:08:07.42\00:08:11.55 tirelessly and diligently among Mauri towards creating a Godly 00:08:11.59\00:08:16.79 and peaceful society. Hadfield's mentor and overseer in Paihia 00:08:16.83\00:08:21.66 would be the fearless, resilient and experienced missionary 00:08:21.73\00:08:26.53 Henry Williams. 00:08:26.57\00:08:28.70 This man was fully committed to strengthening the 00:08:28.74\00:08:31.74 Christian mission in Aotearoa, New Zealand. He'd been working 00:08:31.77\00:08:35.91 there for 15 years. 00:08:35.94\00:08:38.05 I think Octavius's religion and underpinned who he was and 00:08:38.08\00:08:42.25 If you look at the Ten Commandments that says to love 00:08:42.28\00:08:44.35 thy neighbor as thyself. It also talks about doing unto others 00:08:44.39\00:08:47.92 as you'd have them to do to you. I think those two things really 00:08:47.96\00:08:50.89 drove who he was as a person and it linked his involvement and 00:08:50.93\00:08:55.70 being influenced by the claims of William Wilberforce and that 00:08:55.73\00:08:59.20 strong social reform movement, antislavery movement, _ 00:08:59.23\00:09:04.27 reform movement in the UK and that was a very strong 00:09:04.31\00:09:06.27 underpinning of who he was. 00:09:06.31\00:09:09.94 Then in early 1839 two Mauri men named Motanetafifi and 00:09:09.98\00:09:15.85 Cautu arrived in Paihia. They'd come from the Kapiti area just 00:09:15.88\00:09:20.96 North of Wellington. They were looking for a missionary to come 00:09:20.99\00:09:24.59 and live among them. They were of the Natetoa and Nateanakaua 00:09:24.63\00:09:30.07 people led by the famous warrior chief Te Raurapraha These fierce 00:09:30.10\00:09:35.40 and warlike tribes were renowned for the conquest of multitudes 00:09:35.44\00:09:40.84 of Mauri particularly in the south island. Could the gospel 00:09:40.88\00:09:44.78 possibly triumph among these people. And how could Octavius 00:09:44.81\00:09:49.88 cope in such a foreign and potentially dangerous 00:09:49.92\00:09:54.16 environment? Missionaries were being highly sought after by 00:09:54.19\00:09:58.49 Mauri. There was considerable honor or status and prestige 00:09:58.53\00:10:02.16 attached to tribes having their own live in missionary and many 00:10:02.20\00:10:07.14 of them greatly valued being able to learn from the new 00:10:07.17\00:10:10.97 technology and most importantly the written Holy Book of God. 00:10:11.01\00:10:15.54 Octavius Hadfield made it clear that he would gladly go to 00:10:15.58\00:10:21.82 Kapati despite his ill health and lack of experience and 00:10:21.85\00:10:25.39 despite this tribe's well known reputation for aggression and 00:10:25.42\00:10:30.43 violence. 00:10:30.46\00:10:31.79 Hadfield was offered the position. He was to leave in 00:10:37.53\00:10:43.24 about a fortnight's time and Henry Williams would accompany 00:10:43.27\00:10:47.58 him on the journey. And so on the 21st of October 1839 the two 00:10:47.61\00:10:53.11 men set sail. Immediately Hadfield felt deteriorated. 00:10:53.15\00:10:58.82 His asthma steadily grew worse. After 17 days they finally 00:10:58.85\00:11:05.69 arrived safely in Port Nicholson known today as Wellington. 00:11:05.73\00:11:10.53 However, the demands of Hadfield's frail body were to 00:11:10.57\00:11:16.17 continue. From Wellington, carrying all their gear, 00:11:16.20\00:11:19.24 supplies and equipment the two men had to then trek through 00:11:19.27\00:11:23.18 the bush and along the beach for 60 km up to Waikanae. This 00:11:23.21\00:11:29.45 took them a further four days. They finally arrived at Waikanae 00:11:29.48\00:11:35.56 a huge Mauri village called Kenakenapa is at the stockade 00:11:35.59\00:11:40.76 where over one and a half kilometers in circumference. 00:11:40.80\00:11:45.83 The two missionaries were welcomed by about 1000 Mauri. 00:11:45.87\00:11:49.44 These people had written letters to the mission in Auckland 00:11:49.47\00:11:52.67 requesting a missionary come and live among them. So the arrival 00:11:52.71\00:11:57.85 of Williams and Hadfield created great excitement. Then to the 00:11:57.88\00:12:03.65 amazement of the visitors the people sang several hymns to the 00:12:03.69\00:12:09.09 glory of God. The missionaries soon learned the freed Mauri 00:12:09.12\00:12:14.16 captives who'd been taken up to Northland had been taught by 00:12:14.20\00:12:17.40 missionaries after their release That they returned to live with 00:12:17.43\00:12:21.17 their people at Kenakenapa. Led by these Mauri Christians a 00:12:21.20\00:12:27.21 substantial Fatanui church had even been built. Mauri were now 00:12:27.24\00:12:32.98 teaching the gospel to their own people. The people at Kenakenapa 00:12:33.01\00:12:38.25 showed the two visitors fragments of the New Testament 00:12:38.29\00:12:42.62 and the Common Book of Prayer that had been given to them. It 00:12:42.66\00:12:46.56 was evident that they craved for more. 00:12:46.59\00:12:49.46 The problem Octavius had 00:12:49.50\00:12:53.87 had when he first arrived in Kapiti was that both the tribes 00:12:53.90\00:12:56.74 the Yadayaua Wakinae and Nakayaukae Aotaki that both 00:12:56.77\00:13:01.64 wanted them to come and live with them. Of course, he 00:13:01.68\00:13:03.91 couldn't be in two places at once so Henry Williams suggested 00:13:03.95\00:13:07.95 that he build a little hut in each of the places, which is 00:13:07.98\00:13:11.09 what he did and he traveled between the two huts. 00:13:11.12\00:13:15.02 Soon the time came for Henry to return to Paihia. He was 00:13:15.06\00:13:20.80 reluctant to leave such a large and risky mission in the hands 00:13:20.83\00:13:23.77 hands of an inexperienced single man with very poor health. 00:13:23.80\00:13:27.87 I think that when he first arrived at the Par in Kapati 00:13:38.75\00:13:43.42 it must have been quite a shock to him. And he was up at four 00:13:43.45\00:13:47.19 o'clock in the morning and the food would be very different 00:13:47.22\00:13:49.66 from what he was used to. There were insects. Getting used to 00:13:49.69\00:13:52.96 the communal Mauri life must have been pretty tough. 00:13:52.99\00:13:56.40 His accommodation in the initial stages would be his flimsy tent. 00:13:56.43\00:14:02.60 He had to walk many kilometers to reach Mauri in the outlying 00:14:02.64\00:14:06.24 districts. Ill health continued to plague him but Octavius 00:14:06.27\00:14:14.02 Hadfield had made up his mind to commit himself fully to his 00:14:14.05\00:14:16.42 new responsibilities. Several months later furnishings for the 00:14:16.45\00:14:23.89 two small homes he was to build arrived in Kapati along with two 00:14:23.93\00:14:28.96 horses. No longer would Hadfield have to travel on foot. The 00:14:29.00\00:14:33.80 sailing skills Hadfield had learned as a child proved 00:14:33.84\00:14:37.37 invaluable to him. With his mission extending to the top of 00:14:37.41\00:14:41.64 the South Island he sailed across the notorious Cook Strait 00:14:41.68\00:14:46.31 one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the world. 00:14:46.35\00:14:49.98 He did this on numerous occasions. Sailing his flimsy 00:14:50.02\00:14:54.52 little craft, sometimes completely on his own, other 00:14:54.56\00:14:59.36 times Mauri who understood the hidden perils in this dangerous 00:14:59.39\00:15:03.37 body of water would accompany him rowing beside him in their 00:15:03.40\00:15:07.67 waka, their canoe. In the North Island, Octavius was thankful 00:15:07.70\00:15:13.04 for his horses. Now he was able to travel even further afield. 00:15:13.07\00:15:17.51 His area of ministry became very large. It stretched over 240 km 00:15:17.55\00:15:25.12 up the coast to Taranaki across Cook Strait in the other 00:15:25.15\00:15:31.19 direction to D'Urville Island and Nelson in the South Island. 00:15:31.23\00:15:34.43 It also stretched many kilometers up the Manawatu River 00:15:34.46\00:15:40.17 across the Rarataka ranges to the Waiananapa and from there 00:15:40.20\00:15:44.97 down to Wellington. As well as using his horses for 00:15:45.01\00:15:50.08 transportation, Hadfield would also jump onto some of the many 00:15:50.11\00:15:53.98 waka canoes that traveled along the coast. Isolated from his own 00:15:54.02\00:15:59.95 people Hadfield's workload was immense, his days usually 00:15:59.99\00:16:04.39 beginning at 4 a.m. His possessions were meager. His 00:16:04.43\00:16:09.10 frugal diet consisted mostly of biscuit, boiled flour and the 00:16:09.13\00:16:14.14 odd fowl. Yet despite all this Octavius Hadfield was a happy 00:16:14.17\00:16:20.61 man. He was working where he wanted to be working, living 00:16:20.64\00:16:25.71 among Mauri and encouraging them to follow in the footsteps 00:16:25.75\00:16:31.55 of Jesus. Hadfield's life became quickly attached to the lives of 00:16:31.59\00:16:36.76 his Mauri friends. A warm relationship developed between 00:16:36.79\00:16:40.66 them and they even referred to him as their father and he 00:16:40.70\00:16:45.03 became recognized as an authority in Mauri customs and 00:16:45.07\00:16:49.80 language. Mauri interest and confidence in the Bible 00:16:49.84\00:16:53.38 continued to grow. Their thirst for books and learning was 00:16:53.41\00:16:57.95 unquenchable. Wherever he went Hadfield was asked for more 00:16:57.98\00:17:03.15 books. He once wrote that if he had 5000 Mauri New Testament 00:17:03.18\00:17:08.36 Bibles they'd all be gone in a fortnight. By 1841 he was 00:17:08.39\00:17:14.43 serving 7000 Mauri and supervising 18 schools 00:17:14.46\00:17:21.54 throughout his large area of ministry. These schools provided 00:17:21.57\00:17:25.67 basic European education and training in agriculture and 00:17:25.71\00:17:29.78 domestic skills. People of all ages were coming to him to learn 00:17:29.81\00:17:35.78 Even the astute and aged chief Te Rauparaha would sit in on the 00:17:35.82\00:17:41.52 church classroom with his slate puzzling over his letters. These 00:17:41.56\00:17:47.16 two men, so completely different to each other, forged 00:17:47.20\00:17:50.87 a strong mutual respect for each other. Often the old chief would 00:17:50.90\00:17:55.77 visit his missionary friend and they'd talk for hours. In June 00:17:55.80\00:18:01.51 1848 Te Rauparaha wrote to Hadfield whom he nicknamed 00:18:01.54\00:18:08.32 Wira about the large church he was having built. 00:18:08.35\00:18:11.22 In the 1844, Hadfield's health deteriorated markedly. He could 00:18:42.02\00:18:49.46 barely walk. His beloved Mauri friends were concerned that 00:18:49.49\00:18:53.83 they lacked the knowledge to cure him and feared they might 00:18:53.86\00:18:58.83 lose him. So they carried him on a simple stretcher all the way 00:18:58.87\00:19:02.04 Kapati to Wellington. They took him to the home of a Christian 00:19:02.07\00:19:06.47 couple Henry and Anne St. Hill. This devoted pair carefully 00:19:06.51\00:19:11.58 attended to the ailing man. Many believed that Octavius 00:19:11.61\00:19:18.92 Hadfield was dying. But Octavius Hadfield stubbornly refused to 00:19:18.95\00:19:24.96 die. Though he was desperately ill and in great pain the 00:19:24.99\00:19:30.10 30-year-old Hadfield clung to life. However, he was to spend 00:19:30.13\00:19:35.17 the next four years in bed. Yet even from here he would not stop 00:19:35.20\00:19:40.58 serving Mauri. From his bed he seemed to know everything that 00:19:40.61\00:19:45.01 was going on among Mauri and was aware of the very pulse of 00:19:45.05\00:19:49.75 the entire country. 00:19:49.78\00:19:51.82 Tumultuous times were developing in Aotearoa, New Zealand. 00:20:12.61\00:20:16.44 A humanitarian and progressive document, The Treaty of Waitangi 00:20:16.48\00:20:21.65 had been signed but not honored by the British colonial 00:20:21.68\00:20:24.65 government and the settlers. Tensions began to arise. As more 00:20:24.69\00:20:28.86 and more injustices against Mauri occurred. Though so very 00:20:28.89\00:20:34.06 ill Hadfield did not waste this period of his life. From his 00:20:34.10\00:20:38.70 sickbed he wrote many articles and letters in defense of Mauri. 00:20:38.73\00:20:43.54 His visitors included Governor George Grey and the Bishop 00:20:43.57\00:20:47.81 New Zealand, Bishop Selwyn. His influence alleviated biases and 00:20:47.84\00:20:52.98 prejudices held against Mauri. Miraculously in mid-1849, 00:20:53.01\00:20:59.65 Hadfield's health dramatically improved and in the spring of 00:20:59.69\00:21:04.46 that year Octavius Hadfield made his joyful return to Kapati 00:21:04.49\00:21:09.46 after an absence of almost five years. Hadfield was given a 00:21:09.50\00:21:14.34 tumultuous welcome and greeted with loud cries of Hadimai when 00:21:14.37\00:21:20.14 he returned to his beloved Mauri at Ranglatea church at Kapati. 00:21:20.18\00:21:25.21 And it would be three years later in Ranglatea church that 00:21:25.25\00:21:28.82 the 38-year-old missionary would marry Kate Williams the third 00:21:28.85\00:21:33.59 daughter of his senior missionary mentor Henry Williams 00:21:33.62\00:21:37.16 Kate was born in Aotearoa, New Zealand and was fluent in the 00:21:37.19\00:21:40.83 Mauri language. She was familiar with the strength of Mauri and 00:21:40.86\00:21:45.50 was no stranger to their culture and traditions. Kate had a 00:21:45.53\00:21:50.71 passion for Christian education and having watched her mother 00:21:50.74\00:21:52.77 face the many challenges of missionary life she knew what 00:21:52.81\00:21:56.75 was involved in this kind of career. Her happy disposition 00:21:56.78\00:22:00.75 and passion for the cause made her the perfect partner for 00:22:00.78\00:22:05.25 Octavius Hadfield. After their marriage Octavius continued to 00:22:05.29\00:22:10.53 travel extensively leaving Kate to manage the home and school 00:22:10.56\00:22:16.06 alone. Unlike her mother though Kate did accompany her husband 00:22:16.10\00:22:19.47 on a number of occasions. 00:22:19.50\00:22:23.14 Octavius's main focus of course was his missionary work. That's 00:22:23.17\00:22:28.41 what he came to New Zealand to do, but his view... He couldn't 00:22:28.44\00:22:33.48 separate political from religious. In 1842 after the 00:22:33.52\00:22:36.25 war on Issica, Terapahan Iparanehia was seeking 00:22:36.28\00:22:40.86 retribution from the government. So they planned to create this 00:22:40.89\00:22:44.03 strike on Wellington. Octavius would hear about this, went to 00:22:44.06\00:22:47.16 Wellington to explain to the government. On his way back he 00:22:47.20\00:22:49.83 discovered that Iparanehia was still wanting to attack so he 00:22:49.86\00:22:55.07 met with them half way with Hutamakini's help and they 00:22:55.10\00:22:58.11 stopped it. If they had not stopped it it could have been an 00:22:58.14\00:23:00.48 absolute blood bath. 00:23:00.51\00:23:02.74 Never taking the credit for these successes to himself 00:23:02.78\00:23:06.65 Hadfield would simply exclaim the gospel has displayed its 00:23:06.68\00:23:12.45 power. Octavius Hadfield spoke out bravely throughout his life 00:23:12.49\00:23:19.93 against injustice. He was at times deeply unpopular with both 00:23:19.96\00:23:24.63 secularists and politicians. However the very politicians who 00:23:24.67\00:23:30.24 vilified Octavius were often forced to admit that wars could 00:23:30.27\00:23:34.38 have been avoided and millions of pounds saved if they had 00:23:34.41\00:23:37.55 taken his advice. In spite of often fragile health, Octavius 00:23:37.58\00:23:43.22 Hadfield enjoyed a long life. He became the Bishop of 00:23:43.25\00:23:47.76 Wellington in 1870 and the Primate of New Zealand in 1890. 00:23:47.79\00:23:53.63 He played his part in securing peace and justice for both Mauri 00:23:53.66\00:23:58.73 and Pachea based on mutual respect and equal rights. He 00:23:58.77\00:24:02.64 died in 1904 at the age of 90. These words are inscribed on his 00:24:02.67\00:24:08.41 gravestone where he lies next to his beloved Kate at a 00:24:08.44\00:24:12.51 peaceful graveyard of a small church in Tututatara near 00:24:12.55\00:24:17.79 Wanganui. I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 00:24:17.82\00:24:21.86 Octavius Hadfield is unquestionably one of the great 00:24:21.89\00:24:27.43 New Zealanders of the 19th century. He was a man of 00:24:27.46\00:24:31.37 principle with a strong belief in justice, peace, and living 00:24:31.40\00:24:37.37 the Christian life. Mauri paid him the ultimate accolade in 00:24:37.41\00:24:44.65 calling him Auranatea, chief. Although he suffered ill health 00:24:44.68\00:24:49.18 and many other challenges in life he experienced inner peace, 00:24:49.22\00:24:52.25 happiness and fulfillment that comes from knowing Jesus as 00:24:52.29\00:24:57.33 your friend and Savior.
