Thank you for inviting me. 00:05:34.60\00:05:39.73 Dr. Taylor research shows that our brains have a bent and you 00:05:39.77\00:05:43.34 emphasize this strongly. Can you please explain to us what that 00:05:43.37\00:05:47.84 actually means. 00:05:47.88\00:05:49.28 Well it means on our planet with however many billions of people 00:05:49.31\00:05:54.32 we have every one of them has a bent. In terms of brain function 00:05:54.35\00:05:58.95 the word bent is very, very positive. It really means that 00:05:58.99\00:06:05.19 every single brain has the special uniqueness, a special 00:06:05.23\00:06:11.27 talent, some innate giftedness. Some people have more than one. 00:06:11.30\00:06:17.41 But everybody has at least one. And if you can identify what 00:06:17.44\00:06:25.28 your bent is and you own that you can achieve high levels of 00:06:25.31\00:06:32.55 skill, high levels of competence enjoy what you do. Because 00:06:32.59\00:06:38.43 following your bent tends to be energy efficient. You don't use 00:06:38.46\00:06:42.76 as much energy as you do with other types of activities. It 00:06:42.80\00:06:47.37 allows you to develop a higher level of skill. You can become 00:06:47.40\00:06:50.97 competent in anything that involves that bent and currently 00:06:51.01\00:06:59.78 the wisdom is that if you could match 51 percent of all the 00:06:59.81\00:07:07.12 tasks you do somehow to your bent you would be healthier, 00:07:07.16\00:07:12.63 happier, likely more successful and might even live longer. 00:07:12.66\00:07:17.27 So what's so important about this thinking brain. 00:07:17.30\00:07:20.87 Well Gary I can give it to you in two words. Energy consumption 00:07:20.90\00:07:26.78 Everything we do takes energy. When you are working within your 00:07:26.81\00:07:34.38 brain bent you are spending less energy which makes it last 00:07:34.42\00:07:38.75 longer if you will. PET scan studies by Dr. Richard Haier 00:07:38.79\00:07:45.49 suggest that probably each brain has an innate energy advantage. 00:07:45.53\00:07:50.40 What does that mean? It means that you can do some tasks more 00:07:52.27\00:07:55.77 easily and energy efficiently that others. I can do some tasks 00:07:55.80\00:07:59.97 more easily and energy efficient that others. And that's why we 00:08:00.01\00:08:04.05 need to work together because we have different bents and 00:08:04.08\00:08:07.62 it is all about energy consumption. Naturally the brain 00:08:07.65\00:08:11.95 prefers to do energy efficient tasks because it knows how much 00:08:11.99\00:08:17.63 energy it's using even if you haven't identified that. And 00:08:17.66\00:08:21.03 interestingly enough it will try to push you to procrastinate 00:08:21.06\00:08:25.87 the types of tasks that are not energy efficient, that take lots 00:08:25.90\00:08:31.54 more energy. So figure this out for yourself and you know how 00:08:31.57\00:08:37.35 to use your energy by design in terms of energy consumption. If 00:08:37.38\00:08:42.28 you're doing a task that is not part of your brain bent, it's a 00:08:42.32\00:08:47.92 task that is more energy exhausting for your brain you're 00:08:47.96\00:08:52.93 going to have some consequences. First of all your brain's going 00:08:52.96\00:08:55.46 need more glucose, it's going to use more fuel. Secondly it's 00:08:55.50\00:08:59.33 going to need more oxygen. It already takes 20 percent of all 00:08:59.37\00:09:02.77 the oxygen that you breathe in and that gets into your blood 00:09:02.80\00:09:06.14 stream. It needs more oxygen. It gets exhausted quicker. A little 00:09:06.17\00:09:13.62 bit of that task is much more tiring than a lot of the task 00:09:13.65\00:09:18.92 that primarily is driven by your brain bent. You don't think as 00:09:18.95\00:09:23.66 quickly because it doesn't cross the synapse as quickly. 00:09:23.69\00:09:28.26 And bottom line is you get irritable because the brain is 00:09:28.30\00:09:32.47 trying to tell you this is really not working well for me. 00:09:32.50\00:09:35.74 So you can watch people doing different tasks and you can 00:09:35.77\00:09:39.51 observe them being more and more irritable as the brain gets more 00:09:39.54\00:09:44.11 and more fatigued. So it's real. 00:09:44.15\00:09:48.68 My _ is that most people have been led to believe that 00:09:48.72\00:09:50.69 procrastination is a bad thing. This sounds, after listening to 00:09:50.72\00:09:55.92 what you've just said, as if the brain is trying to be energy 00:09:55.96\00:10:00.33 wise. 00:10:00.36\00:10:01.70 Well I would say so, Gary. If you pay attention to what needs 00:10:01.73\00:10:06.23 to be done in life and what your brain tries to make you 00:10:06.27\00:10:11.27 procrastinate, don't need to do it at all or do it later, that 00:10:11.31\00:10:15.58 will give you some idea of the type of tasks that the brain 00:10:15.61\00:10:21.68 does that requires more energy and now you can manage that. 00:10:21.72\00:10:26.15 Because some things I have to do for which I have no innate 00:10:26.19\00:10:30.13 bent, no giftedness whatsoever. I still have to do them. But I 00:10:30.16\00:10:35.66 sandwich them in between things that are energy efficient and 00:10:35.70\00:10:40.10 energy effective for my brain so that I don't get too 00:10:40.14\00:10:43.04 exhausted. Because the brain does not store unlimited amount 00:10:43.07\00:10:48.54 of energy. It doesn't have unlimited energy banks. Some 00:10:48.58\00:10:53.95 research suggests that you only have about enough glucose in 00:10:53.98\00:10:58.25 your brain to power for about 10 minutes. And so it continually 00:10:58.29\00:11:02.76 depends upon the blood stream bringing in fresh supplies of 00:11:02.79\00:11:07.33 fuel, which is glucose, oxygen, micronutrients like vitamins 00:11:07.36\00:11:12.53 and minerals and enzymes. So identifying at least to some 00:11:12.57\00:11:17.21 degree your brain's energy advantage and matching a little 00:11:17.24\00:11:23.55 over half, I say 51 percent, which is more than less, of the 00:11:23.58\00:11:30.05 tasks for which you do have some energy advantage can 00:11:30.09\00:11:34.46 enhance your competency and develop higher levels of skill. 00:11:34.49\00:11:38.43 It can improve your health. We've done some studies that 00:11:38.46\00:11:41.96 show that people who do a lot of adapting, meaning, they spend 00:11:42.00\00:11:46.00 hours and hours and hours doing tasks for which they have no 00:11:46.03\00:11:51.44 bent often they do that for several years, they can really 00:11:51.47\00:11:53.78 get sick. They can develop some stress related illnesses because 00:11:53.81\00:11:57.91 it's stressful for the brain to do most of the work it has to do 00:11:57.95\00:12:04.82 in areas for which it has no bent. And so you potentially can 00:12:04.85\00:12:09.42 extend your life by doing this. And it's not that hard to do. 00:12:09.46\00:12:13.06 You look at all the tasks you have to do. You figure out which 00:12:13.09\00:12:16.67 ones are most energy efficient for your brain and then you 00:12:16.70\00:12:20.84 sandwich the ones in that take more time and energy so that 00:12:20.87\00:12:26.14 you're not just totally exhausted at the end of five 00:12:26.17\00:12:30.05 hours and now you don't even have any energy to do the fun 00:12:30.08\00:12:33.55 things that we also need to do in life. 00:12:33.58\00:12:36.28 So how does one go about doing this? 00:12:36.32\00:12:38.52 Identify when your brain procrastinates for example. 00:12:38.55\00:12:43.69 Well there are some assessments that are available that can give 00:12:43.73\00:12:47.06 you a jump start. But just simply ask yourself, when I look 00:12:47.10\00:12:52.30 at the tasks that I'm doing today, this week, whatever, 00:12:52.33\00:12:57.11 which ones do I find myself putting off or I would put them 00:12:57.14\00:13:02.98 off if I thought I had the choice. Now you write down those 00:13:03.01\00:13:09.15 and eventually you begin to see a pattern. You know I look 00:13:09.18\00:13:13.66 forward to doing this. I can do this tasks longer. Oh if I 00:13:13.69\00:13:18.23 didn't have to do this task at all it would be wonderful and 00:13:18.26\00:13:22.66 so on. I'll give you one example in my life. Balancing my check 00:13:22.70\00:13:29.20 book is really energy intensive for my brain and for years I 00:13:29.24\00:13:34.31 would struggle and I'd procrastinate and then I'd have 00:13:34.34\00:13:36.68 to do several months at a time and that means if there was a 00:13:36.71\00:13:40.58 mistake somewhere I would be behind the eight ball for 00:13:40.62\00:13:42.48 several months. And I finally said, my brain really doesn't 00:13:42.52\00:13:47.86 like to do this. It's exhausted. I'm going to trade somebody. 00:13:47.89\00:13:53.66 And for several years I'd been cutting one of our neighbor 00:13:53.70\00:13:58.27 person's hair because I've cut hair my whole life starting with 00:13:58.30\00:14:02.07 my own. Didn't do a good job of that first haircut when I was 00:14:02.10\00:14:06.04 about three. So I said look I'll cut your hair any time you want 00:14:06.07\00:14:11.35 if once a month you'll balance my check book. The answer was 00:14:11.38\00:14:15.38 deal. I don't like to cut my hair, I don't like to pay for it 00:14:15.42\00:14:19.02 Okay that's great, works for both of us. So here's the kicker 00:14:19.05\00:14:23.83 Many people have learned to do very well tasks that do not 00:14:23.86\00:14:30.87 match their bent, either because that's what was emphasized at 00:14:30.90\00:14:34.24 home and they were made to do it or their job requires it and 00:14:34.27\00:14:38.37 they don't have a lot of options for income. It's not what you 00:14:38.41\00:14:43.85 have learned to do well, as my kids used to say, read my lips 00:14:43.88\00:14:49.85 Mom. It's what you've learned to do well, it's what your brain 00:14:49.88\00:14:55.02 does energy efficiently, meaning you don't dread doing it and 00:14:55.06\00:14:59.73 you're not totally wiped out when you've spent an hour doing 00:14:59.76\00:15:05.20 that. A second thing you can ask yourself is, when I do this 00:15:05.23\00:15:11.47 task how exhausted am I at the end? Do I feel like if I could 00:15:11.51\00:15:15.48 I'd just like to go to bed. Or, do I still have energy. And the 00:15:15.51\00:15:21.95 third thing you can ask yourself is when I'm doing these 00:15:21.98\00:15:25.39 different tasks which task ends up the one that I make the most 00:15:25.42\00:15:32.39 mistakes while I'm doing it. Because if it's not energy 00:15:32.43\00:15:37.10 efficient you just tend to make more mistakes. So the goal is to 00:15:37.13\00:15:42.50 become a little more aware of what's going on in your brain so 00:15:42.54\00:15:46.74 you know how to work with it more efficiently. 00:15:46.78\00:15:49.21 So Dr. Taylor, whereabouts in your brain is this energy 00:15:49.24\00:15:53.11 advantage located? 00:15:53.15\00:15:55.38 Who knows? It may be in different parts of the brain but 00:15:55.42\00:16:01.92 at this point what we believe is that you can think about it and 00:16:01.96\00:16:10.13 manage your energy and evaluate your energy in the third brain 00:16:10.17\00:16:15.30 layer where you have conscious thought. So as a reminder, you 00:16:15.34\00:16:20.34 can describe the brain in three layers. Your wrist has the first 00:16:20.38\00:16:25.25 brain layer. There's no conscious thought there. 00:16:25.28\00:16:27.98 Make this hand into a fist; that's the limbic system, again 00:16:28.02\00:16:31.92 no conscious thought. Put this hand over the top. There's your 00:16:31.95\00:16:36.29 neo-cortex that third brain layer. You can actually see that 00:16:36.32\00:16:41.20 on a brain model. Your other hand represents this whole part 00:16:41.23\00:16:46.77 here, this rind on the watermelon, if you will. 00:16:46.80\00:16:52.67 Now this third layer is divided by natural fissures into two 00:16:52.71\00:16:58.21 hemispheres, right hemisphere and left hemisphere, which is 00:16:58.25\00:17:00.98 about the size of your brain. And if you look at the screen 00:17:01.02\00:17:04.45 then you can see the drawing of that. Each hemisphere also has a 00:17:04.49\00:17:10.56 fissure. It gives us four chunks of cerebral tissue and way back 00:17:10.59\00:17:17.33 in the 5th century B.C., something like that, Hippocrates 00:17:17.37\00:17:23.77 said, the brain has four chunks of tissue, or division. Don't 00:17:23.81\00:17:28.91 know how he figured that out. And you can see that now we have 00:17:28.94\00:17:34.05 brain scans the brain has four chunks of tissue in that third 00:17:34.08\00:17:38.45 layer. He names those starting at the tope left, the choleric, 00:17:38.49\00:17:44.46 sanguine, melancholy and phlegmatic. Some people talk 00:17:44.49\00:17:49.50 about the left frontal or right frontal, the left posterior, the 00:17:49.53\00:17:53.60 right posterior. That's confusing for some people so I 00:17:53.64\00:17:57.87 just name renamed them with key functions. So what he called the 00:17:57.91\00:18:04.61 choleric division I call the prioritizing division. What he 00:18:04.65\00:18:09.48 called the sanguine division, it's the visualizing, making 00:18:09.52\00:18:13.22 pictures in your mind, imagining What he called the melancholy I 00:18:13.25\00:18:19.36 call the harmonizing division. It's the part that wants 00:18:19.39\00:18:21.60 relationships with each other, with nature, with whatever. And 00:18:21.63\00:18:26.47 what he called the phlegmatic I call the maintaining division 00:18:26.50\00:18:31.51 because that part of the brain develops routines and follows 00:18:31.54\00:18:35.51 them over and over again so you can do it the same way all the 00:18:35.54\00:18:42.05 time. So within those four chunks we have some conscious 00:18:42.08\00:18:46.72 thought and are able to evaluate energy: How much am I expending? 00:18:46.76\00:18:53.60 How tired am I? And so we are at least processing this in that 00:18:53.63\00:18:59.07 part of the brain and my guess is that the energy advantage may 00:18:59.10\00:19:06.98 be there as well because it impacts our thinking ability and 00:19:07.01\00:19:11.71 that's where we consciously think. 00:19:11.75\00:19:13.98 Dr. Taylor, this has been so fascinating, relevant and 00:19:14.02\00:19:17.29 helpful. I just love talking about the brain. 00:19:19.82\00:19:24.26 Dr. Arlene Taylor has certainly given us a lot of valuable 00:19:24.29\00:19:30.57 information and much to think about. And that includes 00:19:30.60\00:19:35.70 discovering our brain bent, what we're good at and where 00:19:35.74\00:19:37.97 our talents lie. To us today the word talent refers to the 00:19:38.01\00:19:44.41 person's natural ability to be very good at something. Talent 00:19:44.45\00:19:49.22 refers to above average ability, an extraordinary ability like 00:19:49.25\00:19:53.39 a talent to sing, or learn, or paint, or excel in sports. But 00:19:53.42\00:19:59.16 the only reason this word is in our dictionary today is because 00:19:59.19\00:20:03.00 Jesus used it in a story, or parable, that he told. Jesus 00:20:03.03\00:20:06.94 parable of the talents is found in Matthew chapter 25 00:20:06.97\00:20:10.81 verses 14 to 30. In this parable Jesus described how a wealthy 00:20:10.84\00:20:17.31 master entrusted talents to three of his servants. 00:20:17.35\00:20:21.58 Now, a talent was a huge amount of money, 00:20:21.62\00:20:25.12 it was worth about 20 years of wages for a common laborer, 00:20:25.15\00:20:28.92 so it was serious money, probably millions of dollars. 00:20:28.96\00:20:32.59 But in Jesus parable, He was clearly using this large 00:20:32.63\00:20:37.63 unit of money symbolically, figuratively, to refer to any 00:20:37.67\00:20:42.14 God-given talent we are entrusted with, 00:20:42.20\00:20:44.47 including our abilities. This concept became so widely 00:20:44.51\00:20:50.05 and commonly taught in England during the Middle Ages 00:20:50.08\00:20:52.38 that the word talent was adopted into the English language 00:20:52.41\00:20:56.48 to mean our natural abilities. 00:20:56.52\00:20:58.79 Listen to how Jesus started His story, His parable in 00:20:58.82\00:21:03.29 So Jesus tells this story about a wealthy man 00:21:28.12\00:21:31.65 preparing to leave on a journey who entrusts three 00:21:31.69\00:21:35.19 of his servants with talents. A lot of money. 00:21:35.22\00:21:38.53 He give one five talents, another two, and another 00:21:38.56\00:21:42.70 one talent and he expects the servants to invest those talents 00:21:42.73\00:21:47.07 wisely and well so they will be able to provide him with a 00:21:47.10\00:21:50.54 good return on his investments when he gets back from 00:21:50.57\00:21:53.71 his journey. All we are told is that the master of portion 00:21:53.74\00:21:58.45 the amounts to each of the servants according to their 00:21:58.48\00:22:01.62 ability. While the master is gone, the five talent and two 00:22:01.65\00:22:06.39 talent servants invest their talents diligently and wisely 00:22:06.42\00:22:10.99 and they receive a 100% return on their investments. 00:22:11.03\00:22:15.26 but the one talent servant, just buries his talent. 00:22:15.30\00:22:19.97 He does absolutely nothing to develop or grow his talent 00:22:20.00\00:22:25.31 so there's no increase on his master's investment. 00:22:25.34\00:22:28.71 The opportunity is lost, gone forever. 00:22:28.74\00:22:31.98 So when the master returns, he commends and awards the 00:22:32.01\00:22:36.95 five and two talent servants. But the one talent servant 00:22:36.99\00:22:41.09 who did nothing with his talent, is rebuked and punished. 00:22:41.12\00:22:45.16 Now, Jesus is telling us some- thing very important here. 00:22:45.19\00:22:49.73 We've all been given or entrusted by God 00:22:49.76\00:22:52.97 with something of value. In fact, everything we have 00:22:53.00\00:22:57.11 is given to us by God. Now, although this parable 00:22:57.14\00:23:01.28 refers to money, it has a far wider application 00:23:01.31\00:23:05.31 and can teach us a lot about work, success, wealth 00:23:05.35\00:23:09.48 and yes, even our brains. 00:23:09.52\00:23:12.35 Some believe this parable align with brain bent 00:23:12.39\00:23:16.73 and our natural talents and abilities. 00:23:16.76\00:23:19.23 Every brain has some unique talents and its important 00:23:19.26\00:23:24.47 that we identify and develop them. 00:23:24.50\00:23:27.20 Because as the parable indicates, it's either use it 00:23:27.24\00:23:31.17 or lose it.
