Over time, the name has become famous, 00:00:37.97\00:00:42.44 the word Silicon originally referred to the large number 00:00:42.47\00:00:47.14 innovators and manufacturers of silicon chips located in the 00:00:47.18\00:00:51.58 area. Silicon Valley is now home to many of the worlds 00:00:51.61\00:00:56.15 largest high-tech corporations and scores of well-known 00:00:56.18\00:00:59.72 companies. Including the headquarters of 39 businesses 00:00:59.75\00:01:04.29 in the fortune 1,000. 00:01:04.33\00:01:07.86 But did you know, there is a 1.4-kilo entity that can 00:01:07.90\00:01:12.30 fit in your hand that's more advance than anything produced 00:01:12.33\00:01:16.50 in Silicon Valley? and it's 30 times more powerful 00:01:16.54\00:01:20.61 than any of the computer inventions made by these 00:01:20.64\00:01:24.25 innovative companies. There is, it's the human brain. 00:01:24.28\00:01:28.98 Stay with us to hear something truly amazing about your brain. 00:01:29.02\00:01:35.16 Humans have been puzzled, awestruck, confused, interested, 00:01:55.84\00:02:00.18 and even delighted with the brain for eons. 00:02:00.22\00:02:03.85 One of the earliest of such individuals on record 00:02:03.89\00:02:07.36 was a Greek physician by the name of Hippocrates. 00:02:07.39\00:02:11.09 Hippocrates said, that the brain had four divisions and 00:02:11.13\00:02:15.83 named them Choleric, Phlegmatic, Sanguine, and Melancholy. 00:02:15.86\00:02:20.54 In his doctoral dissertation, and using a variety of research 00:02:20.57\00:02:25.37 tools W. Eugene Brewer linked each of these terms 00:02:25.41\00:02:30.35 with a region of the brain. It's been said that you can 00:02:30.38\00:02:34.42 manage something effectively only when you can identify 00:02:34.45\00:02:37.99 label and describe it. 00:02:38.02\00:02:40.26 But how do we do that with the brain? 00:02:40.29\00:02:42.96 Well, today's guest, a brain function specialist can help us 00:02:42.99\00:02:48.06 figure this out. What's that all about? 00:03:32.24\00:03:35.74 It describes what we call a natural brain phenomenon. 00:03:35.78\00:03:41.32 It's the brain's response, it's what the brain does 00:03:41.35\00:03:45.69 when it perceives it's not safe. So it's fearful about something, 00:03:45.72\00:03:50.93 It feels unsafe, automatically it begins to downshift. 00:03:50.96\00:03:55.33 It's designed and best used for real threat is the short term. 00:03:55.36\00:04:04.21 You know, something happens the brain feels momentarily 00:04:04.24\00:04:07.98 unsafe, it downshifts. It was never designed for long-term 00:04:08.01\00:04:14.38 prolonged use because you always give up something 00:04:14.42\00:04:18.25 to get something. 00:04:18.29\00:04:19.62 So it's an immediate response by the brain to some threat. 00:04:19.65\00:04:25.46 Exactly, exactly. Couldn't say it better myself. 00:04:25.49\00:04:28.83 Now when most people hear the term downshifting 00:04:28.86\00:04:32.73 or changing gears, they probably think about it in terms of 00:04:32.77\00:04:37.27 vehicles, cars, trucks, whatever. 00:04:37.31\00:04:39.31 How does it relate to the brain? It's a good metaphor, 00:04:39.34\00:04:43.24 it's absolutely wonderful metaphor. 00:04:43.28\00:04:45.61 So if you compare what we call brain downshifting or changing 00:04:45.65\00:04:51.05 gears, think about a truck, automatic transmission for years 00:04:51.09\00:04:55.76 the most effective way for that truck to function on the highway 00:04:55.79\00:05:03.10 is in the top gear. As it's driving along let's say 00:05:03.13\00:05:08.34 that it comes to a part of the road that it's really bumpy 00:05:08.37\00:05:12.77 or there's some gravel patch or there's some pot holes 00:05:12.81\00:05:17.75 without even sometimes putting on the brake, or if you have to 00:05:17.78\00:05:23.59 put on the brake, the automatic transmission will go from third 00:05:23.62\00:05:27.76 to second, because it wants you to get through this bad patch. 00:05:27.79\00:05:32.89 Suppose it happens when you are driving in the mountains 00:05:32.93\00:05:35.83 and now you've also got a steep incline... 00:05:35.86\00:05:38.13 The automatic transmission may go clear down to first 00:05:38.17\00:05:42.17 in order to get you through and if the terrain, 00:05:42.20\00:05:46.04 or the driving conditions are so bad that you can't even get 00:05:46.07\00:05:50.25 through on first, then you're going to stall. 00:05:50.28\00:05:54.48 The degree of threat to the engine if you want to 00:05:54.52\00:06:00.09 talk about it that way, influences whether you go from 00:06:00.12\00:06:05.26 third to second, from second all the way to first or 00:06:05.29\00:06:08.30 whether you stall. Alright, the same thing happens in the 00:06:08.33\00:06:11.63 brain. Every driver experienced the positives and the negatives 00:06:11.67\00:06:17.87 of downshifting or changing gears. 00:06:17.91\00:06:20.94 When the brain downshifts or changes gears 00:06:20.98\00:06:25.41 where does it go to? 00:06:25.45\00:06:26.78 If you look at the screen, you will see a drawing of 00:06:26.82\00:06:31.89 half a brain showing the three brain layers or in this 00:06:31.92\00:06:37.99 metaphor, three gears, pulled apart so you can clearly see 00:06:38.03\00:06:43.30 the three levels. So first gear is brain stem Cerebellum, 00:06:43.33\00:06:48.24 second gear or layer is of course the Carpus Coliseum, 00:06:48.27\00:06:52.91 both of these are sub-conscious, automatic, and then you come 00:06:52.94\00:06:57.91 to the third gear or neo-cortex, and that's where you have 00:06:57.95\00:07:04.02 conscious thought. So when you are purring along 00:07:04.05\00:07:07.92 the highway of life and every- thing is going quite well 00:07:07.96\00:07:12.06 you can metaphorically experience that you are in 00:07:12.09\00:07:16.93 top gear. Now a problem comes up or you have a car accident 00:07:16.97\00:07:23.64 or something adverse happens and the brain feels unsafe, 00:07:23.67\00:07:28.74 I don't know how this is going to affect me, 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.68 I don't know how I'm going to recover, is my insurance 00:07:30.71\00:07:34.35 going to cover the damage to the vehicles, whatever it is. 00:07:34.38\00:07:39.29 and the brain consciously begins to feel unsafe, uncertain, 00:07:39.32\00:07:44.03 insecure. It will first downshift, change gears 00:07:44.06\00:07:50.10 into this second layer looking for some brain function 00:07:50.13\00:07:54.40 that will help it feel safer. And if it doesn't find it in the 00:07:54.44\00:07:59.61 second gear, it will go clear down to the first gear. 00:07:59.64\00:08:03.68 Because in the first gear, are the stress responses 00:08:03.71\00:08:08.28 case in-in-point fight-flight, that's a stress response. 00:08:08.32\00:08:12.52 You get down there and you make a decision 00:08:12.55\00:08:15.02 am I going to run away or am I going to fight? 00:08:15.06\00:08:18.43 What am I going to do to help myself feel safer? 00:08:18.46\00:08:21.53 And then hopefully as this gets resolved, the brain will 00:08:21.56\00:08:27.04 upshift, change gears from first to second and you are back up 00:08:27.07\00:08:31.64 to third. So Dr. Taylor what kind of things, events, or 00:08:31.67\00:08:37.11 experiences would cause our brain to change gears? 00:08:37.15\00:08:41.95 Number 1. Any type of threat, any type of threat 00:08:41.98\00:08:47.16 and that's defined as anything that makes this brain feel 00:08:47.19\00:08:52.63 at least momentarily helpless. How am I going to solve this? 00:08:52.66\00:08:57.33 And when you look at the big picture, it's any situation 00:08:57.37\00:09:02.00 that involves, 00:09:02.04\00:09:03.37 which also includes anxiety and worry. 00:09:08.58\00:09:11.58 So, when any of those exist, the brain tends to direct its 00:09:11.61\00:09:18.82 energy and attention away from this conscious third layer 00:09:18.85\00:09:24.99 neo-cortex and begins to change gears, in America we call it 00:09:25.03\00:09:30.23 down-shifting, to the second brain layer, the second gear 00:09:30.27\00:09:35.44 and if that solves it then, well and good, if that doesn't, 00:09:35.47\00:09:38.17 it'll go clear down to the first gear. 00:09:38.21\00:09:40.04 Dr. Taylor, it's obvious that the ability to automatically 00:09:40.08\00:09:43.85 downshift or change gears can be lifesaving, beneficial 00:09:43.88\00:09:48.18 it also suggests that if the brain downshifts, changes gears 00:09:48.22\00:09:52.89 when it's not necessary to do so then there can be some 00:09:52.92\00:09:56.76 undesirable consequences. Now, do you have any examples 00:09:56.79\00:10:01.00 of what those might be? 00:10:01.03\00:10:02.63 You're absolutely right, the ability to change gears 00:10:02.66\00:10:06.60 automatically can be lifesaving. You can immediately choose 00:10:06.63\00:10:14.08 to run away, to remove yourself from the situation if that's 00:10:14.11\00:10:17.81 possible and if you can't do that, then you sometimes 00:10:17.85\00:10:21.08 have to stand up for yourself and even fight. 00:10:21.12\00:10:24.49 If you have changed gears from imaginary fears, 00:10:24.52\00:10:28.99 or because you don't feel safe but there's really no reason 00:10:29.02\00:10:33.09 for that. You've just watched a lot or really scary movies 00:10:33.13\00:10:37.20 and they've put scary thoughts in your mind... 00:10:37.23\00:10:40.00 If you change gears under those conditions, 00:10:40.04\00:10:43.91 and even if you change gears after a major trauma, 00:10:43.94\00:10:47.84 which most people do because it's a shock, 00:10:47.88\00:10:52.85 they're fearful about the outcome. There can be negative 00:10:52.88\00:10:58.69 consequences especially if it's prolonged downshifting. 00:10:58.72\00:11:04.46 So here's some examples, studies show that in the middle 00:11:04.49\00:11:09.03 of a crisis, people tend to recall less than 15% of what was 00:11:09.06\00:11:16.50 actually said to them. So 85% they don't think to register or 00:11:16.54\00:11:23.21 remember, and you have heard people arguing about this 00:11:23.24\00:11:26.41 I told you that, no you didn't, I know I told you that, 00:11:26.45\00:11:30.32 and I know you didn't. 00:11:30.35\00:11:32.52 Well, one or both of them maybe have been downshifted, 00:11:32.55\00:11:36.16 and they just don't remember. So you have little kids that 00:11:36.19\00:11:40.40 come to school from dangerous or dysfunctional home environments 00:11:40.43\00:11:46.40 and they're down trying to look how to feel safer... 00:11:46.43\00:11:49.94 They don't learn. They can't learn. 00:11:49.97\00:11:52.64 They're down at the part of the brain that doesn't allow them 00:11:52.67\00:11:56.44 to cognitively process information. 00:11:56.48\00:11:59.51 I think the most important thing for many people who 00:11:59.55\00:12:03.28 study the brain is that as this energy and attention 00:12:03.32\00:12:08.26 especially if it's anger or fear goes 00:12:08.29\00:12:11.03 third gear down to first gear quickly. You lose easy access 00:12:11.06\00:12:17.87 to what we call key functions in the pre-frontal cortex 00:12:17.90\00:12:22.04 portion behind the forehead. So what are some of those 00:12:22.07\00:12:25.47 key functions? Well planning, making choices that will give 00:12:25.51\00:12:30.15 you a positive outcomes instead of negative outcomes. 00:12:30.18\00:12:33.42 Morality, What are your standards? 00:12:33.45\00:12:37.09 Willpower, how did he use willpower? 00:12:37.12\00:12:40.29 How have you developed conscience and are you using 00:12:40.32\00:12:43.63 conscience? Are you honest, or are you dishonest? 00:12:43.66\00:12:48.36 Are you using restraint when you get suddenly an idea 00:12:48.40\00:12:54.04 to do something, do you think about it for a minute and decide 00:12:54.07\00:12:57.04 do I really want to do that and face the potential 00:12:57.07\00:13:00.18 consequences...You know, you lose that inhibition ability. 00:13:00.24\00:13:04.31 - Can't brainstorm solutions, it's hard to problem solve 00:13:04.35\00:13:08.28 and so on. So you can understand that people who live in an 00:13:08.32\00:13:14.59 environment with behaviors that trigger the emotion 00:13:14.62\00:13:21.10 of anger, or they're fearful for their lives or fearful for 00:13:21.13\00:13:25.37 the safety of their loved ones, they're handicapped. 00:13:25.40\00:13:28.80 Because they've lost the easy access to those critical 00:13:28.84\00:13:33.48 functions that make us quintessentially human. 00:13:33.51\00:13:38.38 So is there anything we can do to help prevent downshifting 00:13:38.41\00:13:42.88 or changing gears when there's really no valid threat? 00:13:42.92\00:13:46.62 There absolutely is Gary. Because you remember 00:13:46.65\00:13:50.53 the two main emotions that trigger the brain to change 00:13:50.56\00:13:55.96 gears: -Anger, -Fear. Now there are two types of fear, 00:13:56.00\00:14:00.87 There's genuine, this is a threat fear when you must 00:14:00.90\00:14:06.81 do something to take action to keep yourself safe 00:14:06.84\00:14:11.38 and then there is what we call imaginary fears. 00:14:11.41\00:14:14.92 And every human being has imaginary fears of some type 00:14:14.95\00:14:19.65 or another. So what are imaginary fears? 00:14:19.69\00:14:24.03 Well they're fears like, I'm not pretty enough, I'm not 00:14:24.06\00:14:29.23 handsome enough, I'm not good looking enough. 00:14:29.26\00:14:32.60 Or, I'm not smart enough, I can't compete in the world 00:14:32.63\00:14:37.84 cause I'm dumb. Or, nobody's going to love me, 00:14:37.87\00:14:43.41 I'm just not lovable. Nobody, God isn't even going to love me. 00:14:43.45\00:14:50.09 Or, I'm never going to be successful, I, 00:14:50.12\00:14:55.89 I just am never going to make enough money, how can I even 00:14:55.92\00:14:59.09 support my family? You multiply that by the billions of people 00:14:59.13\00:15:04.20 in this world and every brain has some imaginary fears. 00:15:04.23\00:15:08.64 So if you want to prevent unnecessary changing of gears 00:15:08.67\00:15:13.61 then take a look at those imaginary fears. 00:15:13.64\00:15:17.85 Resolve them. I tell people, come on, you look like you look. 00:15:17.88\00:15:24.55 There's no two people as far as we know that have the same 00:15:24.59\00:15:28.52 thumbprints, identical twins don't even look identical. 00:15:28.56\00:15:33.29 You are who you are. Make the best of it and be glad 00:15:33.33\00:15:38.07 who you are. Give up those imaginary fears, 00:15:38.10\00:15:41.24 there's always going to be somebody who you think looks 00:15:41.27\00:15:44.77 better than you. They'll always be somebody who you think 00:15:44.81\00:15:47.54 you look better than. The comparisons are odious, 00:15:47.58\00:15:52.08 give it up. And you go through your fears and you resolve them. 00:15:52.11\00:15:55.85 And believe me, you can prevent unnecessary downshifting 00:15:55.88\00:16:01.56 changing of gears. 00:16:01.59\00:16:02.92 So, if you downshift, change gears unnecessarily 00:16:02.96\00:16:07.90 what can you do about it? 00:16:07.93\00:16:10.17 You can have a pre-planned strategy up your sleeve 00:16:10.20\00:16:14.27 to help you upshift. For example, I have two strategies 00:16:14.30\00:16:19.94 that are in my pocket so to speak. 00:16:19.97\00:16:22.64 I've thought about them ahead of time. When I began to recognize 00:16:22.68\00:16:27.05 that I must be downshifting because I'm getting into that 00:16:27.08\00:16:29.82 really rigid not brainstorming type of thinking... 00:16:29.85\00:16:34.82 I do one or both. My first strategy if I can possibly think 00:16:34.86\00:16:41.20 of anything funny about what's going on and laugh about it, 00:16:41.23\00:16:46.40 I automatically upshift, change gears up to third layer 00:16:46.43\00:16:51.17 and that's because in this top third layer the functions 00:16:51.21\00:16:57.78 of humor live in the right frontal lobes, 00:16:57.81\00:17:02.08 so if we were looking at this, here's humor in the 00:17:02.12\00:17:05.35 right frontal lobe and the ability to laugh is in 00:17:05.39\00:17:10.89 row cause area in the left frontal lobe. 00:17:10.93\00:17:13.76 So, if I can picture that something is funny about this 00:17:13.80\00:17:17.70 and start laughing, I'm know I'm upshifted. Done deal. 00:17:17.73\00:17:21.27 Occasionally the situation has no redeeming humorous 00:17:21.30\00:17:28.18 characteristics what-so-ever. So then I have to go to my 00:17:28.21\00:17:33.68 second strategy. Research has shown that fear and gratitude 00:17:33.72\00:17:40.32 cannot simultaneously exist in the brain. 00:17:40.36\00:17:44.83 And since fear is a major down- shifter that'll change gears 00:17:44.86\00:17:51.57 from 3 to 1 in a Nano-second, all I have to do is concentrate 00:17:51.60\00:17:57.21 on something for which to be grateful. 00:17:57.24\00:17:59.31 And I will up-shift because again, the conscious recognition 00:17:59.57\00:18:04.48 gratitude occurs in the pre- frontal cortex. 00:18:04.51\00:18:07.32 There is always something for which to be grateful Gary. 00:18:07.35\00:18:14.26 The problem is many human beings do not practice daily gratitude. 00:18:14.29\00:18:20.73 And so when you need to grab... I'm thankful something, 00:18:20.76\00:18:24.47 they can't find anything. So I have trained myself 00:18:24.50\00:18:28.87 the last thing when I go to bed at night, 00:18:28.90\00:18:31.97 I think of something for which I am grateful. 00:18:32.01\00:18:35.41 The first thing I think of in the morning 00:18:35.44\00:18:38.15 is something for which to be grateful. 00:18:38.18\00:18:41.38 And several times throughout the day, I practice daily gratitude. 00:18:41.42\00:18:46.55 If I downshift when I really didn't need to, 00:18:46.59\00:18:51.03 or, I needed to but I want to get up-shifted, 00:18:51.06\00:18:55.13 get back to 3rd gear in a hurry. It's one of those emotions that can be 00:19:30.17\00:19:34.74 both positive and negative depending on how we react to it. 00:19:34.77\00:19:39.44 It isn't a bad emotion just by virtue of what it is. 00:19:39.47\00:19:43.41 It's not exactly wrong to feel angry. 00:19:43.45\00:19:46.95 The real issue is how we handle it. 00:19:46.98\00:19:50.05 If we respond to people and situations in an explosion of 00:19:50.09\00:19:55.39 angry words and actions, that harms everyone, 00:19:55.42\00:19:58.63 the people around us and ourselves. 00:19:58.66\00:20:01.63 Our brain changes gears down to the first layer, 00:20:01.66\00:20:06.40 so that's obviously the wrong way to deal with it. 00:20:06.43\00:20:10.97 How then do we deal with anger? How do we get ahead of anger? 00:20:11.01\00:20:16.18 Well the Bible gives us some simple principles that can 00:20:16.21\00:20:20.85 help us deal with the most volatile and annoying 00:20:20.88\00:20:24.75 situations. The first is found in Proverbs chapter 15 and verse 00:20:24.79\00:20:29.12 one. Here's what it says. 00:20:29.16\00:20:30.76 It's so simple yet profound. A gentle orf soft response 00:20:38.20\00:20:45.57 will squash the anger inside. You see, when we vent anger, 00:20:45.61\00:20:50.85 it's never gentle, it's usually loud, blunt, and hurtful. 00:20:50.88\00:20:55.68 When we let rip when we are angry, we use words that we 00:20:55.72\00:21:00.49 wouldn't normally use. So Bible principle number one 00:21:00.52\00:21:05.09 in dealing with anger. 00:21:05.13\00:21:09.33 Next, we turn to Ephesians chapter four 00:21:09.36\00:21:12.93 and verse twenty-six. 00:21:12.97\00:21:15.17 Anger can come on quickly and if you are not prepared for it, 00:21:23.71\00:21:29.02 you'll react by lashing out and hurting others around you. 00:21:29.05\00:21:33.02 Make the decision now to not let anger control you 00:21:33.05\00:21:37.59 when you feel it, recognize it and take steps to manage it. 00:21:37.63\00:21:43.16 Don't hide it, don't deny it, deal with it. 00:21:43.20\00:21:47.70 Because the longer you sit on it, the worse it will get, 00:21:47.74\00:21:52.34 that's why I think this Bible verse is really good. 00:21:52.37\00:21:55.94 Don't end the day still angry, it's not good to end the day 00:21:55.98\00:22:00.65 with all that anger and frustration bottled up inside 00:22:00.68\00:22:04.49 you. Don't hold on to anger and frustration, 00:22:04.52\00:22:08.02 deal with it, work through it, talk about it, sort it out 00:22:08.06\00:22:13.60 before the day ends. 00:22:13.63\00:22:15.63 So Bible principle number two in dealing with anger. 00:22:15.66\00:22:19.73 Don't hold on to anger and frustration, deal with it. 00:22:19.77\00:22:24.57 Next, we turn to Ephesians chapter four and verses 31 and 00:22:24.61\00:22:30.61 32. You can't change how someone treats you but you can choose to 00:22:50.17\00:22:54.14 respond to them with kindness. And we can do this because God 00:22:54.17\00:22:58.91 in Christ forgave us. When we remember what Jesus did for us, 00:22:58.94\00:23:03.98 and how much He loves us, it empowers us to forgive and love 00:23:04.01\00:23:08.65 others. We begin to value other people when we see how much 00:23:08.68\00:23:13.15 Jesus loves us. 00:23:13.19\00:23:15.46 So, there's Bible principle number three 00:23:15.49\00:23:18.59 in dealing with anger. 00:23:18.63\00:23:20.50 The Bible gives us the simple yet practical and yet profound 00:23:25.53\00:23:29.24 ways to deal with anger. And it's worth putting them into 00:23:29.27\00:23:33.27 practice in our lives. Your relationships are worth it, 00:23:33.31\00:23:37.08 your own sanity is worth it.
